Hadronic three-body D decays mediated by scalar resonances

We study the quasi-two-body $D\to SP$ decays and the three-body $D$ decays proceeding through intermediate scalar resonances, where $S$ and $P$ denote scalar and pseudoscalar mesons, respectively. Our main results are: (i) Certain external and internal $W$-emission diagrams with the emitted meson being a scalar meson are na{ï}vely expected to vanish, but they actually receive contributions from vertex and hard spectator-scattering corrections beyond the factorization approximation. (ii) For light scalars with masses below or close to 1~GeV, it is more sensible to study three-body decays directly and compare with experiment as the two-body branching fractions are either unavailable or subject to large finite-width effects of the scalar meson. (iii) We consider the two-quark (scheme I) and four-quark (scheme II) descriptions of the light scalar mesons, and find the latter generally in better agreement with experiment. This is in line with recent BESIII measurements of semileptonic charm decays that prefer the tetraquark description of light scalars produced in charmed meson decays. (iv) The topological amplitude approach fails here as the $D\to SP$ decay branching fractions cannot be reliably inferred from the measurements of three-body decays, mainly because the decay rates cannot be factorized into the topological amplitude squared and the phase space factor. (v) The predicted rates for $D^0\to f_0 P, a_0 P$ are generally smaller than experimental data by one order of magnitude, presumably implying the significance of $W$-exchange amplitudes. (vi) The $W$-annihilation amplitude is found to be very sizable in the $SP$ sector with $|A/T|_{SP}\sim 1/2$, contrary to its suppression in the $PP$ sector with $|A/T|_{PP}\sim 0.18$.

Heavy-Flavor-Conserving Hadronic Weak Decays of Charmed and Bottom Baryons

Three decades ago, heavy-flavor-conserving (HFC) weak decays of heavy baryons such as $Ξ_Q\toΛ_Qπ$ and $Ω_Q\toΞ_Qπ$ for $Q=c,b$ had been studied within the framework that incorporates both heavy-quark and chiral symmetries. It was pointed out that if the heavy quark in the HFC process behaves as a spectator, then the $P$-wave amplitude of ${\cal B}_{\bar 3}\to {\cal B}_{\bar 3}+π$ with ${\cal B}_{\bar 3}$ being an antitriplet heavy baryon will vanish in the heavy quark limit. Indeed, this is the case for $Ξ_b\toΛ_b π$ decays. For $Ξ_c\toΛ_cπ$ decays, they receive additional nonspectator contributions arising from the $W$-exchange diagrams through the $cs\to dc$ transition. Spectator and nonspectator $W$-exchange contributions to the $S$-wave amplitude of $Ξ_c\toΛ_cπ$ are destructive, rendering the $S$-wave contribution even smaller. However, the nonspectator effect on the $P$-wave amplitude was overlooked in all the previous model calculations until a very recent investigation within the framework of a constituent quark model in which the parity-conserving pole terms were found to be dominant in $Ξ_c\toΛ_cπ$ decays. Since the pion produced in the HFC process is soft, we apply current algebra to study both $S$- and $P$-wave amplitudes and employ the bag and diquark models to estimate the matrix elements of four-quark operators. We confirm that $Ξ_c\toΛ_cπ$ decays are indeed dominated by the parity-conserving transition induced from nonspectator $W$-exchange and that they receive largest contributions from the intermediate $Σ_c$ pole terms. We also show that the $S$-wave of $Ω_b\to Ξ_b π$ decays vanishes in the heavy quark limit, while $Ω_c\to Ξ_cπ$ receive additional $W$-exchange contributions via $cs\to dc$ transition.

Two- and three-body hadronic decays of charmed mesons involving a tensor meson

We study the quasi-two-body $D\to TP$ decays and the three-body $D$ decays proceeding through intermediate tensor resonances, where $T$ and $P$ denote tensor and pseudoscalar mesons, respectively. We employ $D\to T$ transition form factors based upon light-cone sum rules and the covariant light-front quark model to evaluate the decay rates, with the former giving a better agreement with current data. Though the tree amplitudes with the emitted meson being a tensor meson vanish under factorization approximation, contributions proportional to the tensor decay constant $f_T$ can be produced from vertex and hard spectator-scattering corrections. We also investigate the finite-width effects of the tensor mesons and find that, contrary to three-body $B$ decays, the tensor-mediated $D$ decays are more seriously affected and the narrow width approximation has to be corrected. More experimental data are required in order to extract information topological amplitudes associated with quasi-two-body $D\to TP$ decays. Among the data, the $D^+\to f_2π^+$ and $D^+\to \bar K_2^{*0}π^+$ branching fractions are not self consistent and further clarification is called for.

Finite-Width Effects in Three-Body B Decays

It is customary to apply the so-called narrow width approximation $Γ(B\to RP_3\to P_1P_2P_3)=Γ(B\to RP_3)Br(R\to P_1P_2)$ to extract the branching fraction of the quasi-two-body decay $B\to RP_3$, with $R$ and $P_3$ being an intermediate resonant state and a pseudoscalar meson, respectively. However, the above factorization is valid only in the zero width limit. We consider a correction parameter $η_R$ from finite width effects. Our main results are: (i) We present a general framework for computing $η_R$ and show that it can be expressed in terms of the normalized differential rate and determined by its value at the resonance. (ii) We introduce a form factor $F(s_{12},m_R)$ for the strong coupling involved in the $R(m_{12})\to P_1P_2$ decay when $m_{12}$ is away from $m_R$. We find that off-shell effects are small in vector meson productions, but prominent in the $K_2^*(1430)$, $σ/f_0(500)$ and $K_0^*(1430)$ resonances. (iii) We evaluate $η_R$ in the theoretical framework of QCD factorization (QCDF) and in the experimental parameterization (EXPP) for three-body decay amplitudes. In general, $η_R^{\rm QCDF}$ and $η_R^{\rm EXPP}$ are similar for vector mesons, but different for tensor and scalar resonances. A study of the differential rates enables us to understand the origin of their differences. (iv) Finite-width corrections to $Br(B^-\to RP)_{\rm NWA}$ obtained in the narrow width approximation are generally small, less than 10\%, but they are prominent in $B^-\toσ/f_0(500)π^-$ and $B^-\to \overline K_0^{*0}(1430)π^-$ decays. The EXPP of the normalized differential rates should be contrasted with the theoretical predictions from QCDF calculation as the latter properly takes into account the energy dependence in weak decay amplitudes.

The strangest lifetime: A bizarre story of $τ(Ω_c^0)$

For a long time it has been established both experimentally and theoretically that $Ω_c^0$ is shortest-lived among the four singly charmed baryons which decay weakly. The situation was dramatically changed in 2018 when LHCb reported a new measurement of the $Ω_c^0$ lifetime using semileptonic $b$-hadron decays. The value is nearly four times larger than the previous world average of $τ(Ω_c^0)$ and it is confirmed by the most recent LHCb measurement with the prompt production. In this viewpoint article, we review the status and point out that heavy quark expansion (HQE) fails to apply to $Ω_c^0$ to the order of $1/m_c^4$. By demanding a sensible HQE for $Ω_c^0$ will lead to a lifetime of $Ω_c^0$ longer than $Λ_c^+$.

Branching Fractions and CP Violation in $B^-\to K^+K^-π^-$ and $B^-\to π^+π^-π^-$ Decays

We present in this work a study of tree-dominated charmless three-body decays of $B$ mesons, $B^-\to K^+K^-π^-$ and $B^-\toπ^+π^-π^-$, within the factorization approach. The main results are: (i) There are two distinct sources of nonresonant contributions: one arises from the $b\to u$ tree transition and the other from the nonresonant matrix element of scalar densities $\langle M_1M_2|\bar q_1 q_2|0\rangle^{\rm NR}$. It turns out that even for tree-dominated three-body decays, dominant nonresonant contributions originate from the penguin diagram rather than from the $b\to u$ tree process, as implied by the large nonresonant component observed recently in the $π^- K^+$ system which accounts for one third of the $B^-\to K^+K^-π^-$ rate. (ii) The calculated branching fraction of $B^-\to f_2(1270)π^-\to K^+K^-π^-$ is smaller than the LHCb by a factor of $\sim 7$ in its central value, but the predicted $\B(B^-\to f_2(1270)π^-\toπ^+π^-π^-)$ is consistent with the data. Branching fractions of $B^-\to f_2(1270)π^-$ extracted from the LHCb measurements of these two processes also differ by a factor of seven! Therefore, it is likely that the $f_2(1270)$ contribution to $B^-\to K^+K^-π^-$ is largely overestimated experimentally. Including $1/m_b$ power corrections from penguin annihilation inferred from QCD factorization (QCDF), a sizable CP asymmetry of 32\% in the $f_2(1270)$ component agrees with experiment. (iii) A fraction of 5\% for the $ρ(1450)$ component in $B^-\toπ^+π^-π^-$ is in accordance with the theoretical expectation. However, a large fraction of 30\% in $B^-\to K^+K^-π^-$ is entirely unexpected. This issue needs to be clarified in the future.

CP Violation in $B^\pm\to ρ^0π^\pm$ and $B^\pm\to σπ^\pm$ Decays

The decay amplitude of $B^+\to π^+π^-π^+$ in the Dalitz plot has been analyzed by the LHCb using three different approaches for the $S$-wave component. It was found that the mode with $σ$ (or $f_0(500)$) exhibited a CP asymmetry of 15\% in the isobar model, whereas the $f_2(1270)$ mode had a 40\% asymmetry. On the contrary, CP asymmetry for the dominant quasi-two-body decay $B^-\toρ^0π^-$ was found to be consistent with zero in all three approaches, while all the existing theoretical predictions lead to a negative CP asymmetry ranging from $-7\%$ to $-45\%$. We show that the nearly vanishing CP violation in $B^-\toρ^0π^-$ is understandable in the framework of QCD factorization (QCDF). It arises from the $1/m_b$ power corrections to the penguin amplitudes due to penguin annihilations and to the color-suppressed tree amplitude due to hard spectator interactions. Penguin annihilation and hard spectator interactions contribute destructively to $A_{CP}(B^-\toρ^0π^-)$ to render it consistent with zero. The branching fraction and CP asymmetry in $B^-\toσ/f_0(500)π^-$ are investigated in QCDF with results in agreement with experiment.

Two-body hadronic weak decays of antitriplet charmed baryons

We study Cabibbo-favored (CF) and singly Cabibbo-suppressed (SCS) two-body hadronic weak decays of the antitriplet charmed baryons $Λ_c^+$, $Ξ_c^0$ and $Ξ_c^+$ with more focus on the last two. Both factorizable and nonfactorizable contributions are considered in the topologic diagram approach. The estimation of nonfactorizable contributions from $W$-exchange and inner $W$-emission diagrams relies on the pole model and current algebra. The non-perturbative parameters in both factorizable and nonfactorizable parts are calculated in the MIT bag model. Branching fractions and up-down decay asymmetries for all the CF and SCS decays of antitriplet charmed baryons are presented. The prediction of $\mathcal{B}(Ξ_c^+\to Ξ^0π^+ )$ agrees well with the measurements inferred from Belle and CLEO, while the calculated ${\cal B}(Ξ_c^0\to Ξ^-π^+)$ is too large compared to the recent Belle measurement. We conclude that these two $Ξ_c\toΞπ^+$ modes cannot be simultaneously explained within the current-algebra framework for $S$-wave amplitudes. This issue needs to be resolved in future study. The long-standing puzzle with the branching fraction and decay asymmetry of $Λ_c^+\toΞ^0 K^+$ is resolved by noting that only type-II $W$-exchange diagram will contribute to this mode. We find that not only the calculated rate agrees with experiment but also the predicted decay asymmetry is consistent with the SU(3)-flavor symmetry approach in sign and magnitude. Likewise, the CF mode $Ξ_c^0\to Σ^+K^-$ and the SCS decays $Ξ_c^0\to pK^-,Σ^+π^-$ proceed only through type-II $W$-exchange. They are predicted to have large and {\it positive} decay asymmetries. These features can be tested in the near future.

Two-body weak decays of doubly charmed baryons

The hadronic two-body weak decays of the doubly charmed baryons $Ξ_{cc}^{++}, Ξ_{cc}^+$ and $Ω_{cc}^+$ are studied in this work. To estimate the nonfactorizable contributions, we work in the pole model for the $P$-wave amplitudes and current algebra for $S$-wave ones. For the $Ξ_{cc}^{++}\to Ξ_c^+π^+$ mode, we find a large destructive interference between factorizable and nonfactorizable contributions for both $S$- and $P$-wave amplitudes. Our prediction of $\sim 0.70\%$ for its branching fraction is smaller than the earlier estimates in which nonfactorizable effects were not considered, but agrees nicely with the result based on an entirely different approach, namely, the covariant confined quark model. On the contrary, a large constructive interference was found in the $P$-wave amplitude by Dhir and Sharma, leading to a branching fraction of order $(7-16)\%$. Using the current results for the absolute branching fractions of $(Λ_c^+,Ξ_c^+)\to p K^-π^+$ and the LHCb measurement of $Ξ_{cc}^{++}\toΞ_c^+π^+$ relative to $Ξ_{cc}^{++}\toΛ_c^+ K^- π^+π^+$, we obtain $\B(Ξ_{cc}^{++}\toΞ_c^+π^+)_{\rm expt}\approx (1.83\pm1.01)\%$ after employing the latest prediction of $\B(Ξ_{cc}^{++}\toΣ_c^{++}\overline{K}^{*0})$. Our prediction of $\mathcal{B}(Ξ_{cc}^{++}\toΞ_c^+π^+)\approx 0.7\%$ is thus consistent with the experimental value but in the lower end. It is important to pin down the branching fraction of this mode in future study. Factorizable and nonfactorizable $S$-wave amplitudes interfere constructively in $Ξ_{cc}^+\toΞ_c^0π^+$. Its large branching fraction of order 4\% may enable experimentalists to search for the $Ξ_{cc}^+$ through this mode. That is, the $Ξ_{cc}^+$ is reconstructed through the $Ξ_{cc}^+\toΞ_c^0π^+$ followed by the decay chain $Ξ_c^0\to Ξ^-π^+\to pπ^-π^-π^+$.

$B \to J/ψK$ Decays in QCD Factorization

The hadronic decays $B\to J/ψK(K^*)$ are interesting because experimentally they are the only color-suppressed modes which have been measured, and theoretically they are calculable by QCD factorization even the emitted meson $Jψ$ is heavy. We analyze the decay $B\to JψK$ within the framework of QCD factorization in the heavy quark limit. We show explicitly the scale and $γ_5$-scheme independence of decay amplitudes and infrared safety of nonfactorizable corrections at twist-2 order. Leading-twist contributions from the light-cone distribution amplitudes (LCDAs) of the mesons are too small to accommodate the data; the nonfactorizable corrections to naive factorization are small and not significant. We study the twist-3 effects due to the kaon and find that the coefficient $a_2(JψK)$ is largely enhanced by the nonfactorizable spectator interactions arising from the twist-3 kaon LCDA $ϕ^K_σ$, which are formally power-suppressed but chirally, logarithmically and kinematically enhanced. Therefore, factorization breaks down at twist-3 order. Higher-twist effects of $Jψ$ are briefly discussed. Our result also resolves the long-standing sign ambiguity of $a_2(JψK)$, which turns out to be positive for its real part.

A global analysis of two-body D to VP decays within the framework of flavor symmetry

Two-body charmed meson decays $D\to VP$ are studied within the framework of the diagrammatic approach. Under flavor SU(3) symmetry, all the flavor amplitude sizes and their associated strong phases are extracted by performing a $χ^2$ fit. Thanks to the recent measurement of $D_s^+\toπ^+ρ^0$, the magnitudes and the strong phases of the $W$-annihilation amplitudes $A_{P,V}$ have been extracted for the first time. As a consequence, the branching fractions of all the $D\to VP$ decays are predicted, especially those modes that could not be predicted previously due to the unknown $A_{P,V}$. Our working assumption, the flavor SU(3) symmetry, is tested by comparing our predictions with experiment for the singly and doubly Cabibbo-suppressed decay modes based on the flavor amplitudes extracted from the Cabibbo-favored decays using the current data. The predictions for the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed channels are in good agreement with the data, while those for the singly Cabibbo-suppressed decay modes are seen to have flavor SU(3) symmetry breaking effects. We find that the inclusion of SU(3) symmetry breaking in color-allowed and color-suppressed tree amplitudes is needed in general in order to have a better agreement with experiment. Nevertheless, the exact flavor SU(3)-symmetric approach alone is adequate to provide an overall explanation for the current data.

Direct CP Violation in Charmless Three-body Decays of $B$ Mesons

Direct CP violation in charmless three-body hadronic decays of $B$ mesons is studied within the framework of a simple model based on the factorization approach. Three-body decays of heavy mesons receive both resonant and nonresonant contributions. Dominant nonresonant contributions to tree-dominated and penguin-dominated three-body decays arise from the $b\to u$ tree transition and $b\to s$ penguin transition, respectively. The former can be evaluated in the framework of heavy meson chiral perturbation theory with some modification, while the latter is governed by the matrix element of the scalar density $\langle M_1M_2|\bar q_1 q_2|0\rangle$. Strong phases in this work reside in effective Wilson coefficients, propagators of resonances and the matrix element of scalar density. In order to accommodate the branching fraction and CP asymmetries observed in $B^-\to K^-π^+π^-$, the matrix element $\langle Kπ|\bar sq|0\rangle$ should have an additional strong phase, which might arise from some sort of power corrections such as final-state interactions. We calculate inclusive and regional CP asymmetries and find that nonresonant CP violation is usually much larger than the resonant one and that the interference effect is generally quite significant. If nonresonant contributions are turned off in the $K^+K^-K^-$ mode, the predicted CP asymmetries due to resonances will be wrong in sign when confronted with experiment. In our study of $B^-\to π^-π^+π^-$, we find that ${\cal A}_{C\!P}(ρ^0π^-)$ should be positive in order to account for CP asymmetries observed in this decay. However, all theories predict a large and negative CP violation in $B^-\to ρ^0π^-$. Measurements of CP-asymmetry Dalitz distributions put very stringent constraints on the theoretical models. We check the magnitude and the sign of violation in some (large) invariant mass regions to test our model.

Heavy-Flavor-Conserving Hadronic Weak Decays of Heavy Baryons

More than two decades ago, we studied heavy-flavor-conserving weak decays of heavy baryons within the framework that incorporates both heavy-quark and chiral symmetries. In view of the first observation of $Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-$ by LHCb recently, we have reexamined these decays and presented updated predictions. The predicted rates for $Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-$ in the MIT bag and diquark models are consistent with experiment. The major theoretical uncertainty stems from the evaluation of baryon matrix elements. The branching fraction of $Ξ_c\toΛ_cπ$ is predicted to be of order $10^{-4}$. It is suppressed relative to $Br(Ξ_b\toΛ_bπ)$ owing to the shorter lifetime of $Ξ_c$ relative to $Ξ_b$ and the destructive nonspectator $W$-exchange contribution. The kinematically accessible weak decays of the sextet heavy baryon $Ω_Q$ are $Ω_Q\toΞ_Qπ$. Due to the absence of the $B_6-B_{\bar 3}$ transition in the heavy quark limit and the $B_6-B_6$ transition in the model calculations, $Ω_Q\toΞ_Qπ$ vanish in the heavy quark limit.

Bottom Baryon Decays to Pseudoscalar Meson and Pentaquark

Based on SU(3) flavor symmetry, we decompose the decay amplitudes of bottom baryon decays to a pseudoscalar meson and an octet (a decuplet) pentaquark in terms of three (two) invariant amplitudes $T_1$ and $T_{2,3}$ ($\tilde T_1$ and $\tilde T_2$) corresponding to external $W$-emission and internal $W$-emission diagrams, respectively. For antitriplet bottom baryons $Λ_b^0,Ξ_b^0$ and $Ξ_b^-$, their decays to a decuplet pentaquark proceed only through the internal $W$-emission diagram. Assuming the dominance from the external $W$-emission amplitudes, we present an estimate of the decay rates relative to $Λ_b^0\to P_p^+K^-$, where $P_p^+$ is the hidden-charm pentaquark with the same light quark content as the proton. Hence, our numerical results will provide a very useful guideline to the experimental search for pentaquarks in bottom baryon decays. For example, $Ξ_b^0\to P_{Σ^+}K^-$, $Ξ_b^-\to P_{Σ^-}\bar K^0$, $Ω_b^-\to P_{Ξ^-}\bar K^0$ and $Ω_b^-\to P_{Ξ^0}K^-$ may have rates comparable to that of $Λ_b^0\to P_p^+K^-$ and these modes should be given the higher priority in the experimental searches for pentaquarks.

Disentangling the Spin-Parity of a Resonance via the Gold-Plated Decay Mode

Searching for new resonances and finding out their properties is an essential part of any existing or future particle physics experiment. The nature of a new resonance is characterized by its spin, charge conjugation, parity, and its couplings with the existing particles of the Standard Model. If a new resonance is found in the four lepton final state produced via two intermediate $Z$ bosons, the resonance could be a new heavy scalar or a $Z'$ boson or even a higher spin particle. In such cases the step by step methodology as enunciated in this paper can be followed to determine the spin, parity and the coupling to two $Z$ bosons of the parent particles, in a fully model-independent way. In our approach we show how three uni-angular distributions and few experimentally measurable observables can conclusively tell us about the spin, parity as well as the couplings of the new resonance to two $Z$ bosons. We have performed a numerical analysis to validate our approach and showed how the uniangular observables can be used to disentangle the spin parity as well as coupling of the resonance.

Revisiting Scalar Glueballs

It is commonly believed that the lowest-lying scalar glueball lies somewhere in the isosinglet scalar mesons $f_0(1370), f_0(1500)$ and $f_0(1710)$ denoted generically by $f_{0}$. In this work we consider lattice calculations and experimental data to infer the glue and $q\bar q$ components of $f_0$. These include the calculations of the scalar glueball masses in quenched and unquenched lattice QCD, measurements of the radiative decays $J/ψ\toγf_{0}$, the ratio of $f_{0}$ decays to $ππ$ and $K\bar K$, the ratio of $J/ψ$ decays to $f_0(1710)ω$ and $f_0(1710)ϕ$, the $f_0$ contributions to $B_s\to J/ψπ^+π^-$, and the near mass degeneracy of $a_0(1450)$ and $K_0^*(1430)$. All analyses suggest the prominent glueball nature of $f_0(1710)$ and the flavor octet structure of $f_0(1500)$.

Strong Decays of Charmed Baryons in Heavy Hadron Chiral Perturbation Theory: An Update

We first give a brief overview of the charmed baryon spectroscopy and discuss their possible structure and spin-parity assignments in the quark model. With the new Belle measurement of the widths of $Σ_c(2455)$ and $Σ_c(2520)$ and the recent CDF measurement of the strong decays of $Λ_c(2595)$ and $Λ_c(2625)$, we give updated coupling constants in heavy hadron chiral perturbation theory. We find $g_2=0.565^{+0.011}_{-0.024}$ for $P$-wave transitions between $s$-wave and $s$-wave baryons, and $h_2$, one of the couplings responsible for $S$-wave transitions between $s$-wave and $p$-wave baryons, is extracted from $Λ_c(2595)^+\toΛ_c^+ππ$ to be $0.63\pm0.07$. It is substantially enhanced compared to the old value of order 0.437. With the help from the quark model, two of the couplings $h_{10}$ and $h_{11}$ responsible for $D$-wave transitions between $s$-wave and $p$-wave baryons are determined from $Σ_c(2880)$ decays. There is a tension for the coupling $h_2$ as its value extracted from $Λ_c(2595)^+\to Λ_c^+ππ$ will imply $Ξ_c(2790)^0\toΞ'_cπ$ and $Ξ_c(2815)^+\toΞ_c^*π$ rates slightly above the current limits. It is conceivable that SU(3) flavor symmetry breaking can help account for the discrepancy.

Charmless Three-body Decays of B_s Mesons

Branching fractions and CP-violating asymmetries of charmless $B_s\to PPP$ decays with $P=K,π$ are studied using a simple model based on the factorization approach. The penguin-dominated modes $B_s\to \bar K^0 K^+π^-$ and $K^0K^-π^+$ have the largest rates among the three-body $B_s$ decays and they are dominated by the $K_0^*(1430)$ resonances and nonresonant contributions. The branching fraction of $B_s\to K^0K^+K^-$ is predicted to be $1.4\times 10^{-6}$, which is close to the high end of the measured result $(0.2-3.4)\times 10^{-6}$ obtained by LHCb. We find sizable CP violation in $K^0π^+π^-$, $K^0π^0π^0$, $K^0K^+K^-$ and $K_SK_SK_S$ channels. Just as the $B_u$ sector, the correlation of CP asymmetries $A_{CP}(B_s\to K^0π^+π^-)\approx -A_{CP}(B_s\to K^0K^+K^-)$ holds in $B_s$ decays. Several model-independent relations based on $U$-spin symmetry for CP asymmetries are derived. Although they cannot be tested by the present available data, they can be checked by the dynamical calculations. Since the $U$-spin symmetry which relates various matrix elements of scalar densities, for example, $<K^0K|\bar dq|0>$ and $<\bar K^0π|\bar sq|0>$, is badly broken, the derived $U$-spin relations are generally not well respected.

Inferring the nature of the boson at 125-126 GeV

The presence of a bosonic resonance near 125 GeV has been firmly established at the Large Hadron Collider. Understanding the exact nature of this boson is a priority. The task now is to verify whether the boson is indeed the scalar Higgs as proposed in the Standard Model of particle physics, or something more esoteric as proposed in the plethora of extensions to the Standard Model. This requires a verification that the boson is a $J^{PC}=0^{++}$ state with couplings precisely as predicted by the Standard Model. Since a non Standard Model boson can in some cases mimic the Standard Model Higgs in its couplings to gauge bosons, it is essential to rule out any anomalous behavior in its gauge couplings. We present a step by step methodology to determine the properties of this resonance without making any assumptions about its couplings. We present the analysis in terms of uni-angular distributions which lead to angular asymmetries that allow for the extraction of the couplings of the 125-126 GeV resonance to Z bosons. We show analytically and numerically, that these asymmetries can unambiguously confirm whether the new boson is indeed the Standard Model Higgs boson.

Near Mass Degeneracy in the Scalar Meson Sector: Implications for $B^*_{(s)0}$ and $B'_{(s)1}$ Mesons

The empirical observation of near degeneracy of scalar mesons above 1 GeV, namely, the mass of the strange-flavor scalar meson is similar to that of the non-strange one, is at variance with the naive expectation of the quark model. Qualitatively, the approximate mass degeneracy can be understood as a consequence of self-energy effects due to strong coupled channels which will push down the mass of the heavy scalar meson in the strange sector more than that in the non-strange partner. However, it works in the conventional model without heavy quark expansion, but not in the approach of heavy meson chiral perturbation theory as mass degeneracy and the physical masses of $D_{s0}^*$ and $D_0^*$ cannot be accounted for simultaneously. In the heavy quark limit, near mass degeneracy observed in the scalar charm sector will imply the same phenomenon in the $B$ system. We have the prediction $M_{B_0^*}\approx M_{B_{s0}^*}\approx 5715\,{\rm MeV}+δΔ_S$ based on heavy quark symmetry and the leading-order QCD correction, where $δΔ_S$ arises from $1/m_Q$ corrections. A crude estimate indicates that $δΔ_S$ is of order $-35$ MeV or less. We stress that the closeness of $B_{s0}^*$ and $B_0^*$ masses implied by heavy quark symmetry is not spoiled by $1/m_Q$ or QCD corrections. The mass-shift effect on $K_0^*(1430)$ is discussed.

On the Momentum Dependence of the Flavor Structure of the Nucleon Sea

Difference between the $\bar u$ and $\bar d$ sea quark distributions in the proton was first observed in the violation of the Gottfried sum rule in deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) experiments. The parton momentum fraction $x$ dependence of this difference has been measured over the region $0.02 < x < 0.35$ from Drell-Yan and semi-inclusive DIS experiments. The Drell-Yan data suggested a possible sign-change for $\bar d(x)-\bar u(x)$ near $x \sim 0.3$, which has not yet been explained by existing theoretical models. We present an independent evidence for the $\bar d(x)-\bar u(x)$ sign-change at $x \sim 0.3$ from an analysis of the DIS data. We further discuss the $x$-dependence of $\bar d(x)-\bar u(x)$ in the context of meson cloud model and the lattice QCD formulation.

On the smallness of Tree-dominated Charmless Two-body Baryonic $B$ Decay Rates

The long awaited baryonic $B$ decay $\bar B{}^0\to p\bar p$ was recently observed by LHCb with a branching fraction of order $10^{-8}$. All the earlier model predictions are too large compared with experiment. In this work, we point out that for a given tree operator $O_i$, the contribution from its Fiertz transformed operator, an effect often missed in the literature, tends to cancel the internal $W$-emission amplitude induced from $O_i$. The wave function of low-lying baryons are symmetric in momenta and the quark flavor with the same chirality, but antisymmetric in color indices. Using these symmetry properties and the chiral structure of weak interactions, we find that half of the Feynman diagrams responsible for internal $W$-emission cancel. Since this feature holds in the charmless modes but not in the charmful ones, we advocate that the partial cancellation accounts for the smallness of the tree-dominated charmless two-body baryonic $B$ decays. This also explains why most previous model calculations predicted too large rates as the above consideration was not taken into account. Finally, we emphasize that, contrary to the claim in the literature, the internal $W$-emission tree amplitude should be proportional to the Wilson coefficient $c_1+c_2$ rather than $c_1-c_2$.

Possibly New Charmed Baryon States from $\bar B^0\to p\bar p D^{0}$ Decay

We examine the invariant mass spectrum of $D^{0}p$ in $\bar B^0\to p\bar p D^{0}$ decay measured by BABAR and find that through the 2-step processes of $\bar B^0\to {\bf B_c^+}(\to D^{0} p)\bar p$, where ${\bf B_c}$ denotes a charmed baryon state, some of the peaks can be identified with the established $Σ_c(2800)^+$, $Λ_c(2880)^+$ and $Λ_c(2940)^+$. Moreover, in order to account for the measured spectrum, it is necessary to introduce a new charmed baryon resonance with $(m,\,Γ)=(3212\pm 20,\,167\pm 34)$ MeV.

Updating B --> PP, VP decays in the framework of flavor symmetry

Current data of charmless B meson decays to two pseudoscalar mesons (PP) and one vector and one pseudoscalar mesons (VP) are analyzed within the framework of flavor SU(3) symmetry, a working principle that we have tested by allowing symmetry breaking factors in the decay amplitudes and found to be a good approximate symmetry. In the PP sector, the color-suppressed tree amplitude is found to be larger than previously known and has a strong phase of ~ -70^o relative to the color-favored tree amplitude. We have extracted for the first time the W-exchange and penguin-annihilation amplitudes. The former has a size of about the QCD-penguin amplitude and a phase opposite to that of the color-favored tree amplitude, while the latter is suppressed in magnitude but gives the dominant contribution to the $B_s^0 \to π^+ π^-$ and $π^0 π^0$ decays. In the VP sector, one striking feature is that the color-suppressed tree amplitude with the spectator quark ending up in the vector meson has a large size and a strong phase of ~ -90^o relative to the color-favored tree amplitudes. The associated electroweak penguin amplitude also has a similar strong phase and a magnitude comparable to the corresponding QCD penguin amplitude. This leads to a large branching fraction of order 10^{-6} for $B_s^0 \to ϕπ^0$. In contrast, the color-suppressed tree, QCD penguin, and electroweak penguin amplitudes with the spectator quark ending up in the pseudoscalar meson have magnitudes more consistent with naive expectations. Besides, current data are not sufficiently precise for us to fix the W-exchange amplitudes. For both the PP and VP sectors, predictions of all the decay modes are made based upon our preferred fit results and compared with data and those made by perturbative approaches. We have identified a few observables to be determined experimentally in order to discriminate among theory calculations.

Branching Fractions and Direct CP Violation in Charmless Three-body Decays of B Mesons

Charmless three-body decays of B mesons is studied using a simple model based on the framework of the factorization approach. Hadronic three-body decays receive both resonant and nonresonant contributions. Dominant nonresonant contributions to tree-dominated three-body decays arise from the $b\to u$ tree transition which can be evaluated using heavy meson chiral perturbation theory valid in the soft meson limit. For penguin-dominated decays, nonresonant signals come mainly from the penguin amplitude governed by the matrix elements of scalar densities $<M_1M_2|\bar q_1 q_2|0>$. We use the measurements of $\bar B^0\to K_SK_SK_S$ to constrain the nonresonant component of $<K\bar K|\bar ss|0>$. The intermediate vector meson contributions to three-body decays are identified through the vector current, while the scalar meson resonances are mainly associated with the scalar density. While the calculated direct CP violation in $B^-\to K^+K^-K^-$ and $B^-\to π^+π^-π^-$ decays agrees well with experiment in both magnitude and sign, the predicted CP asymmetries in $B^-\to π^- K^+K^-$ and $B^-\to K^-π^+π^-$ are wrong in signs when confronted with experiment. It has been conjectured recently that a possible resolution to this CP puzzle may rely on final-state rescattering of $π^+π^-$ and $K^+K^-$. Assuming a large strong phase associated with the matrix element $<Kπ|\bar sq|0>$ arising from some sort of power corrections, we fit it to the data of $K^-π^+π^-$ and find a correct sign for $π^- K^+K^-$.

Mixing angle of $K_1$ axial vector mesons

Analyses of various experimental measurements all indicate that the mixing angle $θ_{K_1}$ of $K_1(1270)$ and $K_1(1400)$ is in the vicinity of $33^\circ$ or $57^\circ$. However, whether $θ_{K_1}$ is greater or less than $45^\circ$ is still quite controversial. For example, there were two very recent studies of the strong decays of $K_1$ mesons. One group claimed that $θ_{K_1}\approx 60^\circ$, while the other group obtained $θ_{K_1}=(33.6\pm4.3)^\circ$. Since the determination of the mixing angles $α_{^3\!P_1}$ and $α_{^1\!P_1}$ with the former (latter) being the mixing angle of $f_1(1285)$ ($h_1(1170)$) and $f_1(1420)$ ($h_1(1380)$) in the flavor basis through mass relations depend on $θ_{K_1}$, we show that $θ_{K_1}\approx 57^\circ$ is ruled out as it leads to a too large deviation from ideal mixing in the $^1\!P_1$ sector, inconsistent with the lattice calculation of $α_{^1\!P_1}$ and the observation of strong decays of $h_1(1170)$ and $h_1(1380)$. We find that for $θ_{K_1}\approx (28-30)^\circ$, the corresponding $α_{^3\!P_1}$ and $α_{^1\!P_1}$ agree well with all lattice and phenomenological analyses. This again reinforces the statement that $θ_{K_1}\sim 33^\circ$ is much more favored than $57^\circ$.

Revisiting charmless hadronic B decays to scalar mesons

Hadronic charmless B decays to scalar mesons are studied within the framework of QCD factorization (QCDF). Considering two different scenarios for scalar mesons above 1 GeV, we find that the data favor the scenario in which the scalars $a_0(1450)$ and $K_0^*(1430)$ are the lowest lying $q\bar q$ bound states. This in turn implies a preferred four-quark nature for light scalars below 1 GeV. Assuming $K_0^*(1430)$ being a lowest lying $q\bar s$ state, we show that the data of $B\to K_0^*(1430)η^{(')}$ and $B\to K_0^*(1430)(ρ,ω,ϕ)$ can be accommodated in QCDF without introducing power corrections induced from penguin annihilation, while the predicted $B^-\to \ov K_0^{*0}(1430)π^-$ and $\ov B^0\to K_0^{*-}(1430)π^+$ are too small compared to experiment. In principle, the data of $K_0^*(1430)π$ modes can be explained if penguin-annihilation induced power corrections are taken into account. However, this will destroy the agreement between theory and experiment for $B\to K_0^*(1430)(η^{(')},ρ,ω,ϕ)$. Contrary to the pseudoscalar meson sector where $B\to Kη'$ has the largest rate in 2-body decays of the $B$ meson, we show that $Br(B\to K_0^*η')<\B(B\to K_0^*η)$. The decay $\ov B^0\to a_0(980)^+K^-$ is found to have a rate much smaller than that of $\ov B^0\to a_0(980)^+π^-$ in QCDF, while it is the other way around in pQCD. Experimental measurements of these two modes will help discriminate between these two different approaches. Assuming 2-quark bound states for $f_0(980)$ and $f_0(500)$, the observed large rates of $f_0(980)K$ and $f_0(980)K^*$ modes can be explained in QCDF with the $f_0(980)\!-\!f_0(500)$ mixing angle $θ$ in the vicinity of $20^\circ$.

Connected-Sea Partons

According to the path-integral formalism of the hadronic tensor, the nucleon sea contains two distinct components called connected sea (CS) and disconnected sea (DS). We discuss how the CS and DS are accessed in the lattice QCD calculation of the moments of the parton distributions. We show that the CS and DS components for $\bar u(x) + \bar d(x)$ can be extracted by using recent data on the strangeness parton distribution, the CT10 global fit, and the lattice result of the ratio of the strange to $u(d)$ moments in the disconnected insertion. The extracted CS and DS for $\bar u(x) + \bar d(x)$ have distinct Bjorken $x$ dependence in qualitative agreement with expectation. The analysis also shows that the momentum fraction of the $\bar u(x) + \bar d(x)$ is about equally divided between CS and DS at $Q^2 = 2.5 {\rm GeV}^2$. Implications on future global analysis for parton distributions are presented.

Direct CP Violation in D -> hh Decays

Evidence of CP violation in the charm sector has been observed recently by the LHCb and CDF Collaborations. The issue of whether it can be accommodated within the standard model (SM) is examined in this talk. We conclude that the CP asymmetry difference $Δa_{CP}^{\rm dir}$ between $D^0 \to K^+ K^-$ and $D^0 \to π^+ π^-$ is of order $-(0.14\sim 0.15)%$. If the improved theoretical estimate of $Δa_{CP}^{\rm dir}$ in the SM remains to be a few per mille and the experimental measurement continues to be large with more statistics in the future, it will be clear evidence of physics beyond the SM in the charm sector.

Direct CP violation in two-body hadronic charmed meson decays

Motivated by the recent observation of CP violation in the charm sector by LHCb, we study direct CP asymmetries in the standard model (SM) for the singly Cabibbo-suppressed two-body hadronic decays of charmed mesons using the topological-diagram approach. In this approach, the magnitude and the phase of topological weak annihilation amplitudes which arise mainly from final-state rescattering can be extracted from the data. Consequently, direct CP asymmetry $a_{dir}^{\rm (tree)}$ at tree level can be reliably estimated. In general, it lies in the range $10^{-4}<a_{dir}^{\rm (tree)}<10^{-3}$. Short-distance QCD penguins and penguin annihilation are calculated using QCD factorization. Their effects are generally small, especially for $D\to VP$ modes. Since weak penguin annihilation receives long-distance contributions from the color-allowed tree amplitude followed by final-state rescattering, it is expected to give the dominant contribution to the direct CP violation in the decays $D^0\to K^+K^-$ and $D^0\to π^+π^-$ in which $a_{dir}^{\rm (tree)}$ is absent. The maximal $Δa_{CP}^{\rm dir}$, the direct CP asymmetry difference between the above-mentioned two modes, allowed in the SM is around -0.25%, more than $2σ$ away from the current world average of $-(0.645\pm 0.180)%$.

Recent Neutrino Data and a Realistic Tribimaximal-like Neutrino Mixing Matrix

In light of the recent neutrino experimental results from Daya Bay and RENO Collaborations, we construct a realistic tribimaximal-like Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata (PMNS) leptonic mixing matrix. Motivated by the Qin-Ma (QM) parametrization for the quark mixing matrix in which the CP-odd phase is approximately maximal, we propose a simple ansatz for the charged lepton mixing matrix, namely, it has the QM-like parametrization, and assume the tribimaximal mixing (TBM) pattern for the neutrino mixing matrix. The deviation of the leptonic mixing matrix from the TBM one is then systematically studied. While the deviation of the solar and atmospheric neutrino mixing angles from the corresponding TBM values, i.e. $\sin^2θ_{12}=1/3$ and $\sin^2θ_{23}=1/2$, is fairly small, we find a nonvanishing reactor mixing angle given by $\sinθ_{13}\approx λ/\sqrt{2}$ ($λ\approx 0.22$ being the Cabibbo angle). Specifically, we obtain $θ_{13}\simeq 9.2^{\circ}$ and $δ_{CP} \simeq δ_{\rm QM} \simeq {\cal O}(90^{\circ})$. Furthermore, we show that the leptonic \CP violation characterized by the Jarlskog invariant is $|J^{\ell}_{CP}|\simeq λ/6$, which could be tested in the future experiments such as the upcoming long baseline neutrino oscillation ones.

Revisiting Scalar and Pseudoscalar Couplings with Nucleons

Certain dark matter interactions with nuclei are mediated possibly by a scalar or pseudoscalar Higgs boson. The estimation of the corresponding cross sections requires a correct evaluation of the couplings between the scalar or pseudoscalar Higgs boson and the nucleons. Progress has been made in two aspects relevant to this study in the past few years. First, recent lattice calculations show that the strange-quark sigma term $σ_s$ and the strange-quark content in the nucleon are much smaller than what are expected previously. Second, lattice and model analyses imply sizable SU(3) breaking effects in the determination on the axial-vector coupling constant $g_A^8$ that in turn affect the extraction of the isosinglet coupling $g_A^0$ and the strange quark spin component $Δs$ from polarized deep inelastic scattering experiments. Based on these new developments, we re-evaluate the relevant nucleon matrix elements and compute the scalar and pseudoscalar couplings of the proton and neutron. We also find that the strange quark contribution in both types of couplings is smaller than previously thought.

SU(3) symmetry breaking and CP violation in D -> PP decays

Evidence of CP violation in the charm sector has been observed recently by the LHCb and CDF Collaborations. Adopting the topological diagram approach, we study flavor SU(3) symmetry breaking effects in the weak decay tree amplitudes of singly Cabibbo-suppressed $D\to PP$ decays. The symmetry breaking in the color-allowed and color-suppressed amplitudes is estimated with the help of the factorization ansatz, while that in the $W$-exchange amplitude is done by fitting to related branching fraction data. We find that the $W$-exchange amplitudes stay in the second quadrant relative to the color-allowed tree amplitude, albeit there are two possibilities for one type of $W$-exchange amplitude. The weak decay penguin amplitudes, on the other hand, are evaluated within the framework of QCD factorization. Using the input of topological tree amplitudes extracted from the Cabibbo-favored decay modes and the perturbative results for QCD penguin amplitudes, we make predictions for the branching fractions and CP asymmetries of singly Cabibbo-suppressed modes. The predictions of branching fractions are generally improved from those in the SU(3) limit. We conclude that the direct CP asymmetry difference between $D^0 \to K^+ K^-$ and $D^0 \to π^+ π^-$ is about $-(0.139\pm 0.004)%$ and $-(0.151\pm 0.004)%$ for the two solutions of $W$-exchange amplitudes, respectively. We also find that the CP asymmetry of $D^0\to K^0\ov K^0$ dominated by the interference between $W$-exchange amplitudes ranges from $-0.62\times 10^{-3}$ to $-1.82\times 10^{-3}$. We study phenomenological implications of two new physics scenarios for explaining the observed CP asymmetry in the charm sector, one with large penguin amplitudes and the other with a large chromomagnetic dipole operator. We find that the two scenarios can be discriminated by the measurements of CP asymmetries of a set of decay modes.

Top Decays with Flavor Changing Neutral Higgs Interactions at the LHC

We investigate the prospects for discovering a top quark decaying into one light Higgs boson along with a charm quark in top quark pair production at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). A general two Higgs doublet model is adopted to study the signature of flavor changing neutral Higgs decay $t \to cϕ^0$, %or $\bar{t} \to \bar{c}ϕ^0$ where $ϕ^0$ could be CP-even ($H^0$) or CP-odd ($A^0$). The dominant physics background is evaluated with realistic acceptance cuts as well as tagging and mistagging efficiencies. For a reasonably large top-charm-Higgs coupling ($λ_{tc}/λ_{t} \agt 0.09$), the abundance of signal events and the %that our acceptance cuts reduction in physics background allow us to establish a $5σ$ signal for $M_ϕ\sim 125$ GeV at the LHC with a center of mass energy ($\sqrt{s}$) of 8 TeV and an integrated luminosity of 20 fb$^{-1}$. The discovery potential will be greatly enhanced with the full energy of $\sqrt{s} = 14$ TeV.

An extension of tribimaximal lepton mixing

Harrison, Perkins and Scott have proposed simple charged lepton and neutrino mass matrices that lead to the tribimaximal mixing $U_{\rm TBM}$. We consider in this work an extension of the mass matrices so that the leptonic mixing matrix becomes $U_{\rm PMNS}=V_L^{\ell\dagger}U_{\rm TBM}W$, where $V_L^\ell$ is a unitary matrix needed to diagonalize the charged lepton mass matrix and $W$ measures the deviation of the neutrino mixing matrix from the bimaximal form. Hence, corrections to $U_{\rm TBM}$ arise from both charged lepton and neutrino sectors. Following our previous work to assume a Qin-Ma-like parametrization $V_{\rm QM}$ for the charged lepton mixing matrix $V_L^\ell$ in which the {\it CP}-odd phase is approximately maximal, we study the phenomenological implications in two different scenarios: $V_L^\ell=V_{\rm QM}^\dagger$ and $V_L^\ell=V_{\rm QM}$. We find that the latter is more preferable, though both scenarios are consistent with the data within $3σ$ ranges. The predicted reactor neutrino mixing angle $θ_{13}$ in both scenarios is consistent with the recent T2K and MINOS data. The leptonic {\it CP} violation characterized by the Jarlskog invariant $J_{\rm CP}$ is generally of order $10^{-2}$.

Charmless Hadronic B Decays into a Tensor Meson

Two-body charmless hadronic B decays involving a tensor meson in the final state are studied within the framework of QCD factorization (QCDF). Due to the G-parity of the tensor meson, both the chiral-even and chiral-odd two-parton light-cone distribution amplitudes of the tensor meson are antisymmetric under the interchange of momentum fractions of the quark and anti-quark in the SU(3) limit. Our main results are: (i) In the naive factorization approach, the decays such as $B^-\to \bar K_2^{*0}π^-$ and $\bar B^0\to K_2^{*-}π^+$ with a tensor meson emitted are prohibited owing to the fact that a tensor meson cannot be created from the local V-A or tensor current. Nevertheless, they receive nonfactorizable contributions in QCDF from vertex, penguin and hard spectator corrections. The experimental observation of $B^-\to \bar K_2^{*0}π^-$ indicates the importance of nonfactorizable effects. (ii) For penguin-dominated $B\to TP$ and $TV$ decays, the predicted rates in naive factorization are usually too small by one to two orders of magnitude. In QCDF, they are enhanced by power corrections from penguin annihilation and nonfactorizable contributions.(iii) The dominant penguin contributions to $B\to K_2^*η^{(')}$ arise from the processes: (a) $b\to ss\bar s\to sη_s$ and (b) $b\to s q\bar q\to q \bar K_2^*$ with $η_q=(u\bar u+d\bar d)/\sqrt{2}$ and $η_s=s\bar s$. The interference, constructive for $K_2^*η'$ and destructive for $K_2^*η$, explains why $Γ(B\to K_2^*η')\ggΓ(B\to K_2^*η)$.

Flavor SU(3) symmetry and QCD factorization in $B \to PP$ and $PV$ decays

Using flavor SU(3) symmetry, we perform a model-independent analysis of charmless $\bar B_{u,d} (\bar B_s) \to PP, ~PV$ decays. All the relevant topological diagrams, including the presumably subleading diagrams, such as the QCD- and EW-penguin exchange diagrams and flavor-singlet weak annihilation ones, are introduced. Indeed, the QCD-penguin exchange diagram turns out to be important in understanding the data for penguin-dominated decay modes. In this work we make efforts to bridge the (model-independent but less quantitative) topological diagram or flavor SU(3) approach and the (quantitative but somewhat model-dependent) QCD factorization (QCDF) approach in these decays, by explicitly showing how to translate each flavor SU(3) amplitude into the corresponding terms in the QCDF framework. After estimating each flavor SU(3) amplitude numerically using QCDF, we discuss various physical consequences, including SU(3) breaking effects and some useful SU(3) relations among decay amplitudes of $\bar B_s \to PV$ and $\bar B_d \to PV$.

Quark-lepton complementarity and tribimaximal neutrino mixing from discrete symmetry

The quark-lepton complementarity (QLC) relations indicate a deep structure that interrelates quarks and leptons. We propose new scenarios, in a seesaw framework with discrete $A_4$ flavor symmetry, which can accommodate the QLC relations and the nonzero neutrino mixing angle $θ_{13}$ together with all the available neutrino experimental data, in a consistent way to generate the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix for the quark mixing. Certain effective dimension-5 operators are introduced, which induce a deviation of the lepton mixing matrix from the tribimaximal mixing (TBM) pattern and lead the quark mixing matrix to the CKM one in form. We explicitly demonstrate three different possibilities of constructing the charged lepton mixing matrix and point out that the {\it phases} of whose elements play a crucial role to satisfy the QLC relations. We find that for the reactor mixing angle $θ_{13}$ its possible values can vary around the center value $\sin θ_{13} \simeq λ/\sqrt{2}$ ($λ\simeq 0.22$ being the Cabbibo angle) and have the lower bound $θ_{13} \gtrsim 3.5^{\circ}$. We also show that sizable leptonic CP violation characterized by the Jarlskog invariant $|J_{\rm CP}|\sim{\cal O}(10^{-2})$ is allowed, which is expected to be tested in the future experiments such as the upcoming long baseline neutrino oscillation ones.

Remarks on Strong CP-Violating Lagrangians

Owing to a different treatment of the vacuum alignment, the strong CP-violating Lagrangian obtained by Di Vecchia, Veneziano and Witten (DVW) 3 decades ago do not look quite the same as the one originally derived by Baluni at the quark or hadron level. We show that they are consistent with each other and emphasize that, within the DVW approach, the $θG\tilde G$ term is not entirely removed away after the vacuum is rotated from the CP-odd state to the CP-even one; strong CP violation resides not only in the quark mass terms but also in the residual topological sector. While the latter relies on the Dashen's theorem, the latter is based on the minimization of a potential energy with respect to the phase of the quark condensate. Contrary to some claims, it is necessary to include the SU(3)-singlet $η_0$ tadpole contribution for strong CP-odd effects induced by the Baluni-type Lagrangian to ensure that strong CP violation vanishes in the zero axial anomaly limit.

Remarks on the Qin-Ma Parametrization of Quark Mixing Matrix

Recently, Qin and Ma (QM) have advocated a new Wolfenstein-like parametrization of the quark mixing matrix based on the triminimal expansion of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) parametrization. The CP-odd phase in the QM parametrization is around $90^\circ$ just as that in the CKM parametrization. We point out that the QM parametrization can be readily obtained from the Wolfenstein parametrization after appropriate phase redefinition for quark fields and that the phase $δ$ in both QM and CKM parametrizations is related to the unitarity angles $α$, $β$ and $γ$, namely, $δ= β+γ$ or $π-α$. We show that both QM and Wolfenstein parametrizations can be deduced from the CKM and Chau-Keung-Maiani ones. By deriving the QM parametrization from the Fritzsch-Xing (FX) parametrization of the quark mixing matrix, we find that the phase of the FX form is in the vicinity of $-270^\circ$ and hence $\sinδ\approx 1$. We discuss the seeming discrepancy between the Wolfenstein and QM parametrizations at the high order of $λ\approx |V_{us}|$.

Revisiting Axial-Vector Meson Mixing

Various phenomenological studies indicate that the mixing angle $θ_{K_1}$ of $K_{1A}$ and $K_{1B}$, the strange partners of the axial-vector mesons $a_1(1260)$ and $b_1(1235)$, respectively, lies in the vicinity of $35^\circ$ or $55^\circ$, but whether this angle is larger or smaller than $45^\circ$ still remains controversial. When the $f_1(1285)$-$f_1(1420)$ mixing angle $θ_{^3P_1}$ and the $h_1(1170)$-$h_1(1380)$ mixing angle $θ_{^1P_1}$ are determined from the mass relations, they depend on the masses of $K_{1A}$ and $K_{1B}$, which in turn depend on the mixing angle $θ_{K_1}$. We show that the approximate decoupling of the light $q\bar q$ state from the heavier $s \bar s$ state, which is empirically valid for vector, tensor and $3^{--}$ mesons, when applied to isoscalar axial-vector mesons, will enable us to discriminate different solutions of $θ_{^3P_1}$ and $θ_{^1P_1}$ and pick up $θ_{K_1}\sim 35^\circ$. Indeed, for $θ_{K_1}\sim 55^\circ$, the predicted $θ_{^1P_1}$ disagrees sharply with the recent lattice calculation and the implied large $s\bar s$ content of $h_1(1170)$ and $q\bar q$ component of $h_1(1380)$ cannot explain the observation of their strong decays. We conclude that $θ_{K_1}$ is smaller than $45^\circ$.

Some Results on Vector and Tensor Meson Mixing in a Generalized QCD-like Theory

We present results for the mixing of quark flavor eigenstates to form low-lying vector and tensor meson mass eigenstates in a generalized QCD-like theory with $\ell$ massless or light, degenerate quarks and one quark of substantial mass, $m_Q$. We show that as $m_Q/Λ$ gets large, where $Λ$ is the confinement scale, the angle governing this mixing approaches $\arctan(1/\sqrt{\ell})$. We give a generalization of the Gell-Mann Okubo mass relation for this theory. A comparison of the $\ell=2$ results with data on $ω$-$ϕ$ and $f_2(1275)$-$f_2'(1525)$ mixing is included.

Wolfenstein Parametrization at Higher Order: Seeming Discrepancies and Their Resolution

In different Wolfenstein parametrizations derived from different exact parametrizations of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix, we explicitly study seeming discrepancies between the matrix elements at the higher order of the expansion parameter $λ$. A systematic way of resolving the seeming discrepancies is proposed. We find that most of the discrepancies can be naturally resolved by a proper redefinition of the numerically small (of order $λ$) parameters. Our approach is further applied to the cases for the Wolfenstein-{\it like} parametrizations, such as the Qin-Ma parametrization.

B to V, A, T Tensor Form Factors in the Covariant Light-Front Approach: Implications on Radiative B Decays

We reanalyze the $B\to M$ tensor form factors in a covariant light-front quark model, where $M$ represents a vector meson $V$, an axial-vector meson $A$, or a tensor meson $T$. The treatment of masses and mixing angles in the $K_{1A,1B}$ systems is improved, where $K_{1A}$ and $K_{1B}$ are the $^3P_1$ and $^1P_1$ states of the axial-vector meson $K_1$, respectively. Rates of $B\to Mγ$ decays are then calculated using the QCD factorization approach. The updated $B\to K^*γ$, $B\to K_1(1270)γ$, $K_1(1400)γ$ and $K_2γ$ rates agree with the data. The $K_1(1270)$--$K_1(1400)$ mixing angle is found to be about $51^\circ$. The sign of the mixing angle is fixed by the observed relative strength of $B\to K_1(1270)γ$ and $K_1(1400)γ$. The formalism is then applied to $B_s\to M$ tensor form factors. We find that the calculated $B_s\to ϕγ$ rate is consistent with experiment, though in the lower end of the data. The branching fractions of $B_s\to f_1(1420)γ$ and $f'_2(1525)γ$ are predicted to be of order $10^{-5}$ and it will be interesting to search for these modes. Rates on $B_s\to f_1(1285)γ$, $h_1(1380)γ$, $h_1(1170)γ$, $f_2(1270)γ$ decays are also predicted.

Hadronic D decays involving even-parity light mesons

We study the hadronic D meson decays into a pseudoscalar meson $P$ and an even-parity meson $M$, where $M$ represents a scalar meson $S$, an axial-vector meson $A$, or a tensor meson $T$. These decays are first analyzed in the flavor-diagram approach. Fits to the $SP$ modes with $S$ being a non-strange scalar meson show that neither the simple $q\bar q$ picture nor the $q^2\bar q^2$ scheme is favored by data. Current measurements on the $AP$ decays are insufficient for a meaningful analysis. Some $TP$ data are inconsistent with the others. In certain cases, the $W$-annihilation diagrams indicated by the data are unexpectedly large. As a comparison, we also compute their decay rates in the factorization approach using form factors extracted from the covariant light-front model. We find that factorization works well for Cabibbo-allowed $D^+ \to SP,AP$ decays free of the weak annihilation contributions ($W$-exchange or $W$-annihilation). For the other $SP$ and $AP$ modes, it is necessary to include weak annihilation contributions to account for the data. However, factoriztion fails for $D\to TP$ decays for some unknown reason; the predicted rates are in general too small by at least two orders of magnitude compared to experiment. We also examine the finite width effects of resonances. Some decay modes which are kinematically forbidden become physically allowed due to the finite width of the resonance. We show that the branching fraction of $D^+\toσπ^+$ extracted from three-body decays is enhanced by a factor of 2, whereas $\B(D^0\to f_2(1270)\ov K^0)$ is reduced by a factor of 4 by finite width effects.

Long-Distance Contributions to D^0-D^0bar Mixing Parameters

Long-distance contributions to the $D^0$-$\bar D^0$ mixing parameters $x$ and $y$ are evaluated using latest data on hadronic $D^0$ decays. In particular, we take on two-body $D \to PP$ and $VP$ decays to evaluate the contributions of two-body intermediate states because they account for $\sim 50%$ of hadronic $D^0$ decays. Use of the diagrammatic approach has been made to estimate yet-observed decay modes. We find that $y$ is of order a few $\times 10^{-3}$ and $x$ of order $10^{-3}$ from hadronic $PP$ and $VP$ modes. These are in good agreement with the latest direct measurement of $D^0$-$\bar D^0$ mixing parameters using the $D^0 \to K_S π^+π^-$ and $K_S K^+ K^-$ decays by BaBar. We estimate the contribution to $y$ from the $VV$ modes using the factorization model and comment on the single-particle resonance effects and contributions from other two-body modes involving even-parity states.

On Charmless $B\to K_hη^{(')}$ Decays with $K_h=K,K^*,K_0^*(1430),K_2^*(1430)$

We study the charmless decays $B\to K_hη$ and $B\to K_hη'$ within the framework of QCD factorization (QCDF) for $K_h= K,K^*,K_0^*(1430)$ and naive factorization for $K_h=K_2^*(1430)$. There are three distinct types of penguin contributions: (i) $b\to sq\bar q\to sη_{q}$, (ii) $b\to ss\bar s\to sη_s$, and (iii) $b\to s q\bar q\to q \bar K_h$, where $η_q=(u\bar u+d\bar d)/\sqrt{2}$ and $η_s=s\bar s$. $B\to K^{(*)}η^{(')}$ decays are dominated by type-II and type-III penguin contributions. The interference, constructive for $Kη'$ and $K^*η$ and destructive for $Kη$ and $K^*η'$, between type-II and type-III diagrams explains the pattern of $Γ(B\to Kη')\ggΓ(B\to Kη)$ and $Γ(B\to K^*η')\llΓ(B\to K^*η)$. Within QCDF, the observed large rate of the $Kη'$ mode can be naturally explained without invoking flavor-singlet contributions or something exotic. The decay pattern for $B\to K_0^*(1430)η^{(')}$ decays depends on whether the scalar meson $K_0^*(1430)$ is an excited state of $κ$ or a lowest-lying $P$-wave $q\bar q$ state. Hence, the experimental measurements of $B\to K_0^*(1430)η^{(')}$ can be used to explore the quark structure of $K_0^*(1430)$. If $K_0^*(1430)$ is a low-lying $q\bar q$ bound state, we find that $K_0^*η$ has a rate slightly larger than $K_0^*η'$ owing to the fact that the $η$-$η'$ mixing angle in the $η_q,η_s$ flavor basis is less than $45^\circ$, in agreement with experiment. Type-III penguin diagram does not contribute to $B\to K_2^*η^{(')}$ under the factorization hypothesis and type-II diagram dominates.

The B-CP Puzzles in QCD Factorization

Within the framework of QCD factorization (QCDF), power corrections due to penguin annihilation can account for theobserved rates of penguin-dominated two-body decays of $B$ mesons and direct CP asymmetries $A_{CP}(K^-π^+)$, $A_{CP}((K^{*-}π^+)$, $A_{CP}((K^-ρ^0)$ and $A_{CP}((π^+π^-)$. However, the predicted direct CP-violating effects in QCDF for $B^-\to K^-π^0,K^-η,π^-η$ and $\bar B^0\toπ^0π^0$ are wrong in signs when confronted with experiment. We consider two different types of power correction effects in order to resolve the CP puzzles and rate deficit problems with penguin-dominated two-body decays of $B$ mesons and color-suppressed tree-dominated $π^0π^0$ and $ρ^0π^0$ modes: penguin annihilation and soft corrections to the color-suppressed tree amplitude.

Two-body hadronic charmed meson decays

We study in this work the two-body hadronic charmed meson decays, including both the PP and VP modes. The latest experimental data are first analyzed in the diagrammatic approach. The magnitudes and strong phases of the flavor amplitudes are extracted from the Cabibbo-favored (CF) decay modes using $χ^2$ minimization. The best-fitted values are then used to predict the branching fractions of the singly-Cabibbo-suppressed (SCS) and doubly-Cabibbo-suppressed decay modes in the flavor SU(3) symmetry limit. We observe significant SU(3) breaking effects in some of SCS channels. In the case of VP modes, we point out that the $A_P$ and $A_V$ amplitudes cannot be completely determined based on currently available data. We conjecture that the quoted experimental results for both $D_s^+\to\bar K^0K^{*+}$ and $D_s^+\to ρ^+η'$ are overestimated. We compare the sizes of color-allowed and color-suppressed tree amplitudes extracted from the diagrammatical approach with the effective parameters $a_1$ and $a_2$ defined in the factorization approach. The ratio $|a_2/a_1|$ is more or less universal among the $D \to {\bar K} π$, ${\bar K}^* π$ and ${\bar K} ρ$ modes. This feature allows us to discriminate between different solutions of topological amplitudes. For the long-standing puzzle about the ratio $Γ(D^0\to K^+K^-)/Γ(D^0\toπ^+π^-)$, we argue that, in addition to the SU(3) breaking effect in the spectator amplitudes, the long-distance resonant contribution through the nearby resonance $f_0(1710)$ can naturally explain why $D^0$ decays more copiously to $K^+ K^-$ than $π^+ π^-$ through the $W$-exchange topology.

Two-parton Light-cone Distribution Amplitudes of Tensor Mesons

We present a detailed study of the two-parton light-cone distribution amplitudes for $1\,^3P_2$ nonet tensor mesons. The asymptotic two-parton distribution amplitudes of twist-2 and twist-3 are given. The decay constants $f_T$ and $f_T^\bot$ defined by the matrices of non-local operators on the lightcone are estimated using the QCD sum rule techniques. We also study the decay constants for $f_2(1270)$ and $f_2^\prime(1525)$ based on the hypothesis of tensor meson dominance together with the data of $Γ(f_2\to ππ)$ and $Γ(f'_2\to K\bar K)$ and find that the results are in accordance with the sum rule predictions.

QCD Factorization for Charmless Hadronic B_s Decays Revisited

Branching fractions and CP-violating asymmetries of charmless $\bar B_s\to PP, VP, VV$ decays (P and V denoting pseudoscalar and vector mesons, respectively) are re-examined in the framework of QCD factorization (QCDF). We take into account subleading power corrections to the penguin annihilation topology and to color-suppressed tree amplitudes that are crucial for resolving the CP puzzles and rate deficit problems with penguin-dominated two-body decays and color-suppressed tree-dominated $π^0π^0$ and $ρ^0π^0$ modes in the $B_{u,d}$ sector. Many of the $B_s\to h_1h_2$ decays can be related to $B_d\to h_1h_2$ ones via U-spin or SU(3) symmetry. Some useful model-independent relations can be derived and tested. Mixing-induced CP asymmetries for many of the penguin-dominated decays are predicted to be very small in the standard model. They are sensitive to New Physics and offer rich possibilities of new discoveries. Measurements of direct CP-violating asymmetries can be used to discriminate QCDF from other competing approaches such as pQCD and soft-collinear effective theory.

Revisiting Charmless Hadronic B_{u,d} Decays in QCD Factorization

Within the framework of QCD factorization (QCDF), we consider two different types of power correction effects in order to resolve the CP puzzles and rate deficit problems with penguin-dominated two-body decays of B mesons and color-suppressed tree-dominated $π^0π^0$ and $ρ^0π^0$ modes: penguin annihilation and soft corrections to the color-suppressed tree amplitude. We emphasize that the electroweak penguin solution to the $B\to Kπ$ CP puzzle via New Physics is irrelevant for solving the CP and rate puzzles related to tree-dominated decays. While some channels e.g. $K^-π^+,K^-ρ^0,π^+π^-,ρ^\pmπ^\mp$ need penguin annihilation to induce the correct magnitudes and signs for their CP violation, some other decays such as $B^-\to K^-π^0,π^-η, K^-η$ and $\bar B^0\to \bar K^{*0}η,π^0π^0$ require the presence of both power corrections to account for the measured CP asymmetries. In general, QCDF predictions for the branching fractions and direct CP asymmetries of $\bar B\to PP,VP,VV$ decays are in good agreement with experiment. The predictions of pQCD and soft-collinear effective theory are included for comparison.

Scalar and Pseudoscalar Glueballs Revisited

Using two simple and robust inputs to constrain the mixing matrix of the isosinglet scalar mesons $f_0(1710)$, $f_0(1500)$, $f_0(1370)$, we have shown that in the SU(3) symmetry limit, $f_0(1500)$ becomes a pure SU(3) octet and is degenerate with $a_0(1450)$, while $f_0(1370)$ is mainly an SU(3) singlet with a slight mixing with the scalar glueball which is the primary component of $f_0(1710)$. These features remain essentially unchanged even when SU(3) breaking is taken into account. We have deduced the mass of the pseudoscalar glueball $G$ from an $η$-$η'$-$G$ mixing formalism based on the anomalous Ward identity for transition matrix elements. With the inputs from the recent KLOE experiment, we find a solution for the pseudoscalar glueball mass around $(1.4\pm 0.1)$ GeV. This affirms that $η(1405)$, having a large production rate in the radiative $J/ψ$ decay and not seen in $γγ$ reactions, is indeed a leading candidate for the pseudoscalar glueball. It is much lower than the results from quenched lattice QCD ($>2.0$ GeV).

Branching Ratios and Polarization in B-> VV,VA,AA Decays

We present a detailed study of charmless two-body B decays into final states involving two vector mesons (VV) or two axial-vector mesons (AA) or one vector and one axial-vector meson (VA), within the framework of QCD factorization, where $A$ is either a $^3P_1$ or $^1P_1$ axial-vector meson. The main results are as follows. (i) In the presence of NLO nonfactorizable corrections, effective Wilson coefficients $a_i^h$ are helicity dependent. For some penguin-dominated modes, the constructive (destructive) interference in the negative-helicity (longitudinal-helicity) amplitude of the $B\to VV$ decay will render the former comparable to the latter and push up the transverse polarization. (ii) In QCD factorization, the transverse polarization fraction can be large for penguin-dominated charmless $VV$ modes by allowing for sizable penguin annihilation contributions. (iii) Using the measured $\bar K^{*0}ρ^-$ channel as an input, we predict the branching ratios and polarization fractions for other $\ov B\to \bar K^*ρ$ decays. (iv) The smallness of the axial-vector decay constant of the $^1P_1$ axial vector meson can be tested by measuring various $b_1ρ$ modes to see if $Γ(\bar B^0\to b_1^-ρ^+)\ll Γ(\bar B^0\to b_1^+ρ^-)$ and $Γ(B^-\to b_1^-ρ^0)\ll Γ(B^-\to b_1^0ρ^-)$. (v) For the penguin-dominated modes $a_1K^*$ and $b_1K^*$, it is found that the former are dominated by transverse polarization amplitudes, whereas the latter are governed by longitudinal polarization states.

CP-violating asymmetries in B^0 decays to K^+K^-K_{S(L)}^0 and K_S^0K_S^0K_{S(L)}^0

Decay rates and time-dependent and direct CP asymmetries in the decays $B^0\to K^+K^-K_{S(L)}$ and $K_S K_S K_{S(L)}$ are studied. Resonant and nonresonant contributions to the three-body decays are carefully investigated. Nonresonant effects on 2-body and 3-body matrix elements are constrained by QCD counting rules. The predicted branching ratios are consistent with the data within the theoretical and experimental errors, though the theoretical central values are somewhat smaller than the experimental ones. Owing to the presence of color-allowed tree amplitudes in $B^0\to K^+K^-K_{S(L)}$, this penguin-dominated mode is subject to a significant tree pollution and the deviation of the mixing-induced \CP asymmetry from that measured in $B\to J/ψK_S$, namely, $Δ\sin 2β_{K^+K^-K_{S(L)}}\equiv \sin 2β_{K^+K^-K_{S(L)}}-\sin 2 β_{J/ψK_S}$, can be as large as O(0.10). In contrast, the $K_SK_SK_{S(L)}$ modes appear theoretically very clean in our picture with negligible $Δ\sin 2β_{K_SK_SK_{S(L)}}$. Direct CP asymmetries in $K^+K^-K_{S(L)}$ and $K_S K_S K_{S(L)}$ modes are found to be very small.

Covariant Light-Front Approach for B to K* gamma, K_1 gamma, K*_2 gamma Decays

Exclusive radiative B decays, B to K* gamma, K_1(1270) gamma, K_1(1400) gamma and K*_2(1430) gamma, are studied in the framework of a covariant light-front quark model. The tensor form factor T_1(q^2) at q^2=0, which is relevant to the decay B to K* gamma, is found to be 0.24, substantially smaller than what expected from the conventional light-front model or light-cone sum rules. Taking into account the sizable next-to-leading order (NLO) corrections, the calculated branching ratio of B to K* gamma agrees with experiment, while most of the existing models predict too large B to K* gamma compared to the data. The relative strength of B to K_1(1270) gamma and B to K_1(1400) gamma rates is very sensitive to the sign of the K_1(1270)-K_1(1400) mixing angle. Contrary to the other models in which K_1(1270) gamma and K_1(1400) gamma rates are predicted to be comparable, it is found that one of them is strongly suppressed owing to a large cancellation between two different form factor terms. The calculated branching ratio of B to K*_2 gamma is in a good agreement with experiment and this may imply the smallness of NLO corrections to this radiative decay mode.

Final State Interactions in Hadronic B Decays

There exist many experimental indications that final-state interactions (FSIs) may play a prominent role not only in charmful B decays but also in charmless B ones. We examine the final-state rescattering effects on the hadronic B decay rates and their impact on direct CP violation. The color-suppressed neutral modes such as $B^0\to D^0π^0,π^0π^0,ρ^0π^0,K^0π^0$ can be substantially enhanced by long-distance rescattering effects. The direct CP-violating partial rate asymmetries in charmless B decays to $ππ/πK$ and $ρπ$ are significantly affected by final-state rescattering and their signs are generally different from that predicted by the short-distance approach. For example, direct CP asymmetry in $B^0\toρ^0π^0$ is increased to around 60% due to final state rescattering effects whereas the short-distance picture gives about 1%. Evidence of direct CP violation in the decay $\bar B^0\to K^-π^+$ is now established, while the combined BaBar and Belle measurements of $\bar B^0\toρ^\pmπ^\mp$ imply a $3.6σ$ direct CP asymmetry in the $ρ^+π^-$ mode. Our predictions for CP violation agree with experiment in both magnitude and sign, whereas the QCD factorization predictions seem to have some difficulty with the data. Current data on $πK$ modes seem to violate the isospin sum rule relation, suggesting the presence of electroweak penguin contributions. We have also investigated whether a large transverse polarization in $B\to ϕK^*$ can arise from the final-state rescattering of $D^{(*)}\bar D_s^{(*)}$ into $ϕK^*$.

B -> J/psi K^* Decays in QCD Factorization

The hadronic decay B -> J K^* is analyzed within the framework of QCD factorization. The spin amplitudes A_0, A_\parallel and A_\perp in the transversity basis and their relative phases are studied using various different form-factor models for B-K^* transition. The effective parameters a_2^h for helicity h=0,+,- states receive different nonfactorizable contributions and hence they are helicity dependent, contrary to naive factorization where a_2^h are universal and polarization independent. QCD factorization breaks down even at the twist-2 level for transverse hard spectator interactions. Although a nontrivial strong phase for the A_\parallel amplitude can be achieved by adjusting the phase of an infrared divergent contribution, the present QCD factorization calculation cannot say anything definite about the phase phi_\parallel. Unlike B -> J/psi K decays, the longitudinal parameter a_2^0 for B -> J/psi K^* does not receive twist-3 corrections and is not large enough to account for the observed branching ratio and the fraction of longitudinal polarization. Possible enhancement mechanisms for a_2^0 are discussed.

Charmful Baryonic B Decays $\bar B^0\toΛ_c\bar p$ and $\bar B\toΛ_c\bar pπ(ρ)$

We study the two-body and three-body charmful baryonic B decays: $\bar B^0\to Λ_c\bar p$ and $\bar B\to Λ_c \bar pπ(ρ)$. The factorizable W-exchange contribution to $\bar B^0\toΛ_c\bar p$ is negligible. Applying the bag model to evaluate the baryon-to-baryon weak transition matrix element, we find $B(\bar B^0\toΛ_c\bar p)\leq 1.1\times 10^{-5}|g_{B^0pΣ_b^+}/6|^2$ with $g_{B^0pΣ_b^+}$ being a strong coupling for the decay $Σ_b^+\to \bar B^0 p$ and hence the predicted branching ratio is well below the current experimental limit. The factorizable contributions to $B^-\toΛ_c\bar pπ^-$ can account for the observed branching ratio of order $6\times 10^{-4}$. The branching ratio of order $2\times 10^{-3}$ for $B^-\toΛ_c\bar pρ^-$ is larger than that of $B^-\toΛ_c\bar pπ^-$ by a factor of about 2.6. We explain why the three-body charmful baryonic B decay has a larger rate than the two-body one, contrary to the case of mesonic B decays.

Weak Annihilation and the Effective Parameters a_1 and a_2 in Nonleptonic D Decays

Based on SU(3) flavor symmetry, many of the quark-graph amplitudes in two-body nonleptonic decays of charmed mesons can be extracted from experiment, which enable us to see the relevance and importance of weak annihilation topologies and to determine the complex parameters $a_1$ and $a_2$ to test the factorization approach. It is found that $a_2$ in $D\to \bar K^*π$ and $D\to \bar Kρ$ can be different by a factor of 2, indicating that nonfactorizable corrections to the latter are far more important than the former. The relative phase between $a_1$ and $a_2$ is about $150^\circ$. Weak annihilation topologies induced by nearby resonances via final-state rescattering can be described in a model-independent manner. Although the W-exchange contribution in $D\to PP$ decays is dominated by resonant final-state interactions (FSIs), its amplitude in VP decays (V: vector meson, P: pseudoscalar meson) receives little contributions from FSIs in the quark-antiquark resonance formation. As a consequence, the sign flip of the W-exchange amplitude in $D\to\bar K^*π$ and $\bar Kρ$ decays, which is needed to explain the relatively real decay amplitudes of $D\to \bar Kρ$, remains unexplained. SU(3) symmetry is badly broken in some Cabibbo-suppressed modes and it can be accounted for by the accumulation of some modest SU(3) violation in individual quark-graph amplitudes.

Semi-inclusive B Decays and Direct CP Violation in QCD Factorization

We have systematically investigated the semi-inclusive B decays B->MX, which are manifestations of the quark decay b->Mq, within the framework of QCD-improved factorization. These decays are theoretically clean and have distinctive experimental signatures. We focus on a class of these that do not require any form factor information and therefore may be especially suitable for extracting information on the angles $α$ and $γ$ of the unitarity triangle. The nonfactorizable effects, such as vertex-type and penguin-type corrections to the two-body b decay and hard spectator corrections to the 3-body decay are calculable in the heavy quark limit. QCD factorization is applicable when the emitted meson is a light meson or a charmonium. We discuss the issue of the CPT constraint on partial rate asymmetries. The strong phase coming from final-state rescattering due to hard gluon exchange between the final states can induce large rate asymmetries for tree-dominated color-suppressed modes $(π^0,ρ^0,ω)X_{\bar s}$. The nonfactorizable hard spectator interactions in the 3-body decay, though phase-space suppressed, are extremely important for the tree-dominated modes $(π^0,ρ^0,ω)X_{\bar s}, ϕX$, $J X_s,J X$ and the penguin-dominated mode $ωX_{s\bar s}$. In fact, they are dominated by the hard spectator corrections. Our result for ${\cal B} (B\to J/ψX_s)$ is in agreement with experiment. The semi-inclusive decay modes: $B^0_s\to (π^0,ρ^0,ω)X_{\bar s}$, $ρ^0X_{s\bar s}$, $B^0\to(K^-X,K^{*-}X)$ and $B^-\to (K^0X_s,K^{*0}X_s)$ are the most promising ones in searching for direct CP violation. In fact, they have branching ratios of order $10^{-6}-10^{-4}$ and CP rate asymmetries of order $(10-40)%$.

The Proton Spin Puzzle: A Status Report

The proton spin puzzle inspired by the EMC experiment and its present status are closely examined. Recent experimental progress is reviewed. Various factorization schemes due to the ambiguity arising from the axial anomaly are discussed. Some misconceptions in the literature about the $\MS$ factorization scheme are clarified. It is stressed that the polarized nucleon structure function $g_1(x)$ is independent of the factorization scheme chosen in defining the quark spin density. Consequently, the anomalous gluon and sea-quark interpretations for the deviation of the observed first moment of $g_1^p(x)$ from the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule are equivalent. While it is well known that the total quark spin in the chiral-invariant (CI) factorization scheme (e.g. the improved parton model) can be made to be close to the quark model expectation provided that the gluon spin is positive and large enough, it is much less known that, contrary to the gauge-invariant scheme (e.g. the MSbar scheme), the quark orbital angular momentum in the CI scheme deviates even farther from the relativistic quark model prediction. Recent developments in the NLO analysis of polarized DIS data, orbital angular momentum and lattice calculations of the proton spin content are briefly sketched.

Charmless Hadronic Two-body Decays of B_u and B_d Mesons

Two-body charmless nonleptonic decays of B_u and B_d mesons are studied within the framework of generalized factorization in which the effective Wilson coefficients $c^{eff}_i$ are renormalization-scale and -scheme independent while factorization is applied to the tree-level hadronic matrix elements. Contrary to previous studies, our $c_i^{eff}$ do not suffer from gauge and infrared problems. Nonfactorizable effects are parametrized in terms of N_c(LL) and N_c(LR), the effective numbers of colors arising from (V-A)(V-A) and (V-A)(V+A) four-quark operators, respectively. Tree and penguin transitions are classified into six different classes. The data of $B^-\toρ^0π^-$ and $B^-\toϕK^-$ clearly indicate that $N_c(LR)\neq N_c(LL)$: The first measurement of the b -> u mode $B^-\toρ^0π^-$ and the experimental information on the tree-dominated mode $B^-\toωπ^-$ all imply that Nc(LL) is less than 3, whereas the CLEO measurement of $B^-\toϕK^-$ shows Nc(LR)>3. For given input parameters, the prediction of ${\cal B}(B\toη' K)$ is largely improved by setting Nc(LL)~2 and Nc(LR)>Nc(LL); in particular, the charm content of the eta' contributes in the right direction. The decay rate of $B\toϕK^*$ is very sensitive to the form-factor ratio A_2/A_1; the absence of $B\toϕK$ events does not necessarily invalidate the factorization approach. If the branching ratio of $B^-\toωK^-$ is experimentally found to be significantly larger than that of $B^-\toρ^0 K^-$, we argue that inelastic final-state rescattering may account for the disparity between $ωK^-$ and $ρ^0 K^-$.

Phenomenological Analysis of D Meson Lifetimes

The QCD-based operator-product-expansion technique is systematically applied to the study of charmed meson lifetimes. We stress that it is crucial to take into account the momentum of the spectator light quark of charmed mesons, otherwise the destructive Pauli-interference effect in $D^+$ decays will lead to a negative decay width for the $D^+$. We have applied the QCD sum rule approach to estimate the hadronic matrix elements of color-singlet and color-octet 4-quark operators relevant to nonleptonic inclusive $D$ decays. The lifetime of $D_s^+$ is found to be longer than that of $D^0$ because the latter receives a constructive $W$-exchange contribution, whereas the hadronic annihilation and leptonic contributions to the former are compensated by the Pauli interference. We obtain the lifetime ratio $τ(D_s^+)/τ(D^0)$ $\approx 1.08\pm 0.04$, which is larger than some earlier theoretical estimates, but still smaller than the recent measurements by CLEO and E791.

Charmless Hadronic Two-body Decays of the B_s Mesons

Two-body charmless nonleptonic decays of the B_s meson are studied within the framework of generalized factorization in which factorization is applied to the tree level matrix elements while the effective Wilson coefficients are $μ$ and renormalization scheme independent, and nonfactorizable effects are parametrized in terms of N_c(LL) and N_c(LR), the effective numbers of colors arising from (V-A)(V-A) and (V-A)(V+A) four-quark operators, respectively. Branching ratios of $B_s\to PP,PV,VV$ decays are calculated as a function of N_c(LR) with two different considerations for N_c(LL). We find that (i) the electroweak penguin contributions account for about 85% (for N_c(LL)=2) of the decay rates of $B_s\to ηπ,η'π,ηρ,η'ρ,ϕπ,ϕρ$, which receive contributions only from tree and electroweak penguin diagrams; a measurement of them will provide a clean determination of the electroweak penguin coefficient a_9, (ii) electroweak penguin corrections to $B_s\toω\etapp,ϕη,ωϕ,K^{(*)}ϕ,ϕϕ$ are in general as significant as QCD penguin effects and even play a dominant role; their decay rates depend strongly on N_c(LR), (iii) the branching ratio of $B_s\to ηη'$ is of order 2x10^{-5}, (iv) the contribution from the $η'$ charm content is important for $B_s\toη'η'$, but less significant for $B_s\toηη'$, and (v) the decay rates for the final states $K^{+(*)}K^{-(*)}$ follow the pattern: $Γ(B_s\to K^+K^-)>Γ(B_s\to K^+K^{*-})\geqΓ(B_s\to K^{*+}K^{*-}) >Γ(B_s\to K^{+*}K^-)$, as a consequence of various interference effects between the penguin amplitudes governed by the coefficients a_4 and a_6.

Nonfactorizable Effects in Spectator and Penguin Amplitudes of Hadronic Charmless B Decays

Nonfactorizable effects in hadronic charmless B -> PP, VP decays can be parametrized in terms of the effective number of colors N_c in the effective parameters $a_i^{eff}$ that are linear combinations of Wilson coefficients. It is shown that N_c(V+A) in the penguin amplitudes induced by the (V-A)(V+A) four-quark operators is different from N_c(V-A) in the decay amplitudes arising from the (V-A)(V-A) operators. Central values of the branching ratios of $B^\pm\toωπ^\pm$ and $B\toππ$ decays favor $N_c(V-A)\approx 2$, in accordance with the nonfactorizable effect observed in $B\to D^{(*)}π(ρ)$. Measurements of the interference effects in $B^-\toπ^-(ρ^-)π^0 (ρ^0)$ decays will provide a more decisive test on the parameter N_c(V-A). However, $N_c(V+A)\sim 2$ is ruled out by $B^\pm\toϕK^\pm$ and $B\toϕK^*$. We find that N_c(V+A) lies in the range $10\geq N_c(V+A)\geq 4.3$, subject to the corrections from W-annihilation and space-like penguin effects. With $N_c(V-A)\approx 2$ we show that the branching ratio of $B\toη' K$ is enhanced considerably at small values of 1/N_c(V+A) so that it is compatible with experiment. In particular, the measurement of $B^0\toη' K^0$ is now well explained without resorting to any new mechanism or new physics beyond the Standard Model. Finally, we point out that it is difficult to understand the observed large branching ratio of $B^\pm\toωK^\pm$ within the present framework. Inelastic final-state interactions may alleviate the difficulty with this decay mode.

A Phenomenological Analysis of Heavy Hadron Lifetimes

A phenomenological analysis of lifetimes of bottom and charmed hadrons within the framework of the heavy quark expansion is performed. The baryon matrix element is evaluated using the bag model and the nonrelativistic quark model. We find that bottom-baryon lifetimes follow the pattern $τ(Ω_b)\simeqτ(Ξ_b^-)>τ(Λ_b)\simeqτ(Ξ_b^0)$. However, neither the lifetime ratio $τ(Λ_b)/τ( B_d)$ nor the absolute decay rates of the $Λ_b$ baryon and $B$ mesons can be explained. One way of solving both difficulties is to allow the presence of linear $1/m_Q$ corrections by scaling the inclusive nonleptonic width with the fifth power of the hadron mass $m_{H_Q}$ rather than the heavy quark mass $m_Q$. The hierarchy of bottom baryon lifetimes is dramatically modified to $τ(Λ_b)>τ(Ξ_b^-)>τ(Ξ_b^0)>τ( Ω_b)$: The longest-lived $Ω_b$ among bottom baryons in the OPE prescription now becomes shortest-lived. The replacement of $m_Q$ by $m_{H_Q}$ in nonleptonic widths is natural and justified in the PQCD-based factorization approach formulated in terms of hadron-level kinematics. For inclusive charmed baryon decays, we argue that since the heavy quark expansion does not converge, local duality cannot be tested in this case. We show that while the ansatz of substituting the heavy quark mass by the hadron mass provides a much better description of the charmed-baryon lifetime {\it ratios}, it appears unnatural and unpredictive for describing the {\it absolute} inclusive decay rates of charmed baryons, contrary to the bottom case.

Can $B\to J/ψK(K^*)$ decays be described by factorization ?

The new measurements of $B\to J/ψK(K^*)$ decays by CDF and CLEO indicate that the production ratio $R$ and the fraction of longitudinal polarization $Γ_L/Γ$ are smaller than the previous results. In conjunction with the new result of parity-odd transverse polarization in $B\to J/ψK^*$, we found a minimal modification to the factorization hypothesis: While the data of $B\to J/ψK^*$ can be accommodated in the factorization approach with nonfactorizable terms $χ_{A_1} = χ_{A_2} = χ_{V} \equiv χ$ of order 15%, the result of $R$ measurement requires that the nonfactorizable effect $χ_{F_1}$ on $B\to J/ψK$ be slightly larger than $χ$. Therefore, the effective parameter $a_2^{\rm eff}$ is not universal even for $B\to J/ψK(K^*)$ decays. We have generalized the considerations to $B\to ψ(2S)K(K^*)$ and $B_s\to J/ψϕ$ and found that the predictions are in agreement with currently available data.

Status of the Proton Spin Problem

The proton spin problem triggered by the EMC experiment and its present status are closely examined. Recent experimental and theoretical progresses and their implications are reviewed. It is pointed out that the sign of the sea-quark polarization generated perturbatively by hard gluons via the anomaly mechanism is predictable: It is negative if the gluon spin component is positive. We stress that the polarized nucleon structure function $g_1(x)$ is independent of the $k_\perp$-factorization scheme chosen in defining the quark spin density and the hard photon-gluon scattering cross section. Consequently, the anomalous gluon and sea-quark interpretations for $Γ_1$, the first moment of $g_1(x)$, are equivalent. It is the axial anomaly that accounts for the observed suppression of $Γ_1^p$.

1/M Corrections to Baryonic Form Factors in the Quark Model

Weak current-induced baryonic form factors at zero recoil are evaluated in the rest frame of the heavy parent baryon using the nonrelativistic quark model. Contrary to previous similar work in the literature, our quark model results do satisfy the constraints imposed by heavy quark symmetry for heavy-heavy baryon transitions at the symmetric point $v\cdot v'=1$ and are in agreement with the predictions of the heavy quark effective theory for antitriplet-antitriplet heavy baryon form factors at zero recoil evaluated to order $1/m_Q$. Furthermore, the quark model approach has the merit that it is applicable to any heavy-heavy and heavy-light baryonic transitions at maximum $q^2$. Assuming a dipole $q^2$ behavior, we have applied the quark model form factors to nonleptonic, semileptonic and weak radiative decays of the heavy baryons. It is emphasized that the flavor suppression factor occurring in many heavy-light baryonic transitions, which is unfortunately overlooked in most literature, is very crucial towards an agreement between theory and experiment for the semileptonic decay $Λ_c\toΛe^+ν_e$. Predictions for the decay modes $\b,~Λ_c \to pϕ,~Λ_b\toΛγ$, $Ξ_b\toΞγ$, and for the semileptonic decays of $Λ_b,~Ξ_{b,c}$ and $Ω_b$ are presented. }

Hadronic Weak Decays of Heavy Mesons and Nonfactorization

The parameters $χ_{1,2}$, which measure nonfactorizable soft gluon contributions to hadronic weak decays of mesons, are updated by extracting them from the data of $D,\,B\to PP,~VP$ decays ($P$: pseudoscalar meson, $V$: vector meson). It is found that $χ_2$ ranges from $-0.36$ to $-0.60$ in the decays from $D\to\bar{K}π$ to $D^+\toϕπ^+,~D\to\bar{K}^*π$, while it is of order 10\% with a positive sign in $B\toψK,~Dπ,~D^*π,~Dρ$ decays. Therefore, the effective parameter $a_2$ is process dependent in charm decay, whereas it stays fairly stable in $B$ decay. This implies the picture that nonfactorizable effects become stronger when the decay particles become less energetic after hadronization. As for $D,\,B\to VV$ decays, the presence of nonfactorizable terms in general prevents a possible definition of effective $a_1$ and $a_2$. This is reenforced by the observation of a large longitudinal polarization fraction in $B\toψK^*$ decay, implying $S$-wave dominated nonfactorizable effects. The nonfactorizable term dominated by the $S$-wave is also essential for understanding the decay rate of $B^-\to D^{*0} ρ^-$. It is found that all nonfactorizable effects $A_1^{nf}/A_1^{BK^*},~A _1^{nf}/A_1^{Bρ},~A_1^{nf}/A_1^{BD^*}$ ($nf$ standing for nonfactorization) are positive and of order 10\%, in accordance with $χ_2(B\to D(D^*)π( ρ))$ and $χ_2(B\toψK)$. However, we show that in $D\to\bar{K}^*ρ$ decay nonfactorizable effects cannot be dominated by the $S$-wave. A polarization measurement in the color- and Cabibbo-suppressed decay mode $D^+\toϕρ^+$ is strongly urged in order to test if $A_2^{nf}/A_2$ plays a more pivotal role than $A_1^{nf}/A_1$ in charm decay.

Corrections to Chiral Dynamics of Heavy Hadrons: SU(3) Symmetry Breaking, (with some minor corrections)

In previous publications we have analyzed the strong and electromagnetic decays of heavy mesons and heavy baryons in a formalism which incorporates heavy-quark and chiral symmetries. There are two possible symmetry-breaking effects on the chiral dynamics of heavy hadrons: the finite-mass effects from light quarks and the $1/ m_Q$ corrections from heavy quarks. In the present paper, chiral-symmetry-breaking effects are studied and applications to various strong and radiative decays of heavy hadrons are illustrated. SU(3) violations induced by chiral loops in the radiative decays of charmed mesons and charmed baryons are compared with those predicted by the constituent quark model. In particular, available data for $D^*$ decays favor values of the parameters in chiral perturbation theory which give predictions for $D^*$ decays close to the quark model results except for the $D^{*+}_s$. Implications are discussed.

Extraction of $a_1$ and $a_2$ from $B\to ψK(K^*),~ D(D^*)π(ρ)$ Decays

Based on the factorization approach, we show that the CLEO data for the ratio $Γ(B\toψK^*)/Γ(B\to ψK)$ and the CDF measurement of the fraction of longitudinal polarization in $B\toψK^*$ can be accounted for by the heavy-flavor-symmetry approach for heavy-light form factors provided that the form factor $F_0$ behaves as a constant, while the $q^2$ dependence is of the monopole form for $F_1,~ A_0,~A_1$, and of the dipole behavior for $A_2$ and $V$. This $q^2$ extrapolation for form factors is further supported by $B\to K^*γ$ data and by a recent QCD-sum-rule analysis. We then apply this method to $B\to D(D^*)π(ρ)$ decays to extract the parameters $a_1$ and $a_2$. It is found that $a_1(B\to D^{(*)}π(ρ))=1.01\pm 0.06$ and $a_2(B\to D^{(*)}π(ρ))=0.23\pm 0.06\,$. Our result $a_2/a_1=0.22\pm 0.06$ thus significantly improves the previous analysis that leads to $a_2/a_1=0.23\pm 0.11$. We argue that, contrary to what anticipated from the leading $1/N_c$ expansion, the sign of $a_2(B\toψ\K)$ should be positive and $a_2(B\toψ\K)~{\large ^>_\sim}~ a_2(B\to D^{(*)}π(ρ))$.

Cabibbo-allowed nonleptonic weak decays of charmed baryons

Cabibbo-allowed nonleptonic weak decays of charmed baryons $\lamc,~\xin,~\xip$ and $Ω_c^0$ into an octet baryon and a pseudoscalar meson are analyzed. The nonfactorizable contributions are evaluated under pole approximation, and it turns out that the $s$-wave amplitudes are dominated by the low-lying $\halfm$ resonances, while $p$-wave ones governed by the ground-state $\halfp$ poles. The MIT bag model is employed to calculate the coupling constants, form factors and baryon matrix elements. Our conclusions are: (i) $s$ waves are no longer dominated by commutator terms; the current-algebra method is certainly not applicable to parity-violating amplitudes, (ii) nonfactorizable $W$ exchange effects are generally important; they can be comparable to and somtimes even dominate over factorizable contributions, depending on the decay modes under consideration, (iii) large-$N_c$ approximation for factorizable amplitudes also works in the heavy baryon sector and it accounts for the color nonsuppression of $\lamc\ri p\bar{K}^0$ relative to $\lamc\riΛπ^+$, (iv) a measurement of the decay rate and the sign of the $α$ asymmetry parameter of certain proposed decay modes will help discern various models; especially the sign of $α$ in $\lamc\riΣπ$ decays can be used to unambiguously differentiate recent theoretical schemes from current algebra, and (v) $p$ waves are the dominant contributions to the decays $\lamc\riΞ^0 K^+$ and $\xin\riΣ^+ K^-$, but they are subject to a large cancellation; this renders present theoretical predictions on these two channels unreliable.

Direct CP Violation in $K_L\toπ^+π^-γ$

CP violation due to interference between $K_L$ and $K_S$ decays into $π^+π^-γ$ is analyzed in the Standard Model. The CP-violating parameter $ε'_{+- γ}$, which is the difference between $η_{+-γ}$ and $η_{+-}$, receives dominant contributions from $K^0-\bar{K}^0$ mixing and the gluon penguin diagram; its magnitude is calculated to be $10^{-2}ε$ at a typical region of the Dalitz plot. Genuine direct CP violation in $K_L\toπ^+ π^-γ$ decay originating from the electromagnetic penguin diagram is of order $10^{-4}ε$.
