Search for an Axion-Like Particle in $B\rightarrow K^{(*)} a (\rightarrowγγ)$ Decays at Belle

We report a search for an axion-like particle $a$ in $B\rightarrow K^{(*)} a (\rightarrowγγ)$ decays using data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy electron-positron collider. The search is based on a $711 \mathrm{fb^{-1}}$ data sample collected at the $Υ4S$ resonance energy, corresponding to a sample of $772\times10^6$ $Υ4S$ events. In this study, we search for the decay of the axion-like particle into a pair of photons, $a \rightarrow γγ$. We scan the two-photon invariant mass in the range $0.16\ \mathrm{GeV/}c^2-4.50\ \mathrm{GeV}/c^2$ for the $K$ modes and $0.16\ \mathrm{GeV/}c^2-4.20\ \mathrm{GeV}/c^2$ for the $K^{*}$ modes. No significant signal is observed in any of the modes, and 90\% confidence level upper limits are established on the coupling to the $W$ boson, $g_aW$, as a function of $a$ mass. The limits range from $3 \times 10^{-6} \mathrm{GeV}^{-1}$ to $3 \times 10^{-5} \mathrm{GeV}^{-1}$, improving the current constraints on $g_aW$ by a factor of two over the most stringent previous experimental results.

Measurement of branching fractions and direct $CP$ asymmetries for $B \to Kπ$ and $B\toππ$ decays at Belle II

We report measurements of the branching fractions and direct $\it{CP}$ asymmetries of the decays $B^0 \to K^+ π^-$, $B^+ \to K^+ π^0$, $B^+ \to K^0 π^+$, and $B^0 \to K^0 π^0$, and use these for testing the standard model through an isospin-based sum rule. In addition, we measure the branching fraction and direct $\it{CP}$ asymmetry of the decay $B^+ \to π^+π^0$ and the branching fraction of the decay $B^0 \to π^+π^-$. The data are collected with the Belle II detector from $e^+e^-$ collisions at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance produced by the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy collider and contain $387\times 10^6$ bottom-antibottom meson pairs. Signal yields are determined in two-dimensional fits to background-discriminating variables, and range from 500 to 3900 decays, depending on the channel. We obtain $-0.03 \pm 0.13 \pm 0.04$ for the sum rule, in agreement with the standard model expectation of zero and with a precision comparable to the best existing determinations.

Measurement of the $B^{0} \rightarrow D^{*-} \ell^{+} ν_{\ell}$ branching ratio and $|V_{cb}|$ with a fully reconstructed accompanying $B$ meson in 2019-2021 Belle II data

We present a measurement of the $B^{0} \rightarrow D^{*-} \ell^{+} ν_{\ell}$ ($\ell=e,μ$) branching ratio and of the CKM parameter $|V_{cb}|$ using signal decays accompanied by a fully reconstructed $B$ meson. The Belle II data set of electron-positron collisions at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance, corresponding to 189.3$\,$fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, is analyzed. With the Caprini-Lellouch-Neubert form factor parameterization, the parameters $η_{\rm EW} F(1) |V_{cb}|$ and $ρ^{2}$ are extracted, where $η_{\rm EW}$ is an electroweak correction, $F(1)$ is a normalization factor and $ρ^{2}$ is a form factor shape parameter. We reconstruct 516 signal decays and thereby obtain $\mathcal{B} (B^{0} \rightarrow D^{*-} \ell^{+} ν_{\ell} ) = \left(5.27 \pm 0.22~\rm{\left(stat\right)} \pm 0.38~\rm{\left(syst\right)}\right) \%$, $η_{EW} F(1) |V_{cb}| \times 10^{3} = 34.6 \pm 1.8~\rm{\left(stat\right)} \pm 1.7~\rm{\left(syst\right)}$, and $ρ^{2} = 0.94 \pm 0.18~\rm{\left(stat\right)} \pm 0.11~\rm{\left(syst\right)}$.

Search for rare decays $B^{+} \to D_{s}^{(\ast)+}η$, $D_{s}^{(\ast)+}\bar{K}^{0}$, $D^{+}η$, and $D^{+}K^{0}$

We present a study of rare decay modes $B^{+} \to D_{s}^{+}h^{0}$, $B^{+} \to D_{s}^{\ast+}h^{0}$, and $B^{+} \to D^{+}h^{0}$, where $h^{0}$ denotes the neutral mesons $η$ or $K^{0}$, using a data sample of $(772 \pm 10 ) \times 10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ events produced at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance. The data were collected by the Belle detector operating at the asymmetric-energy KEKB collider. We observe no evidence for these decays, so we provide upper limits at the 90$\%$ confidence level on the branching fractions of $B^{+} \to D_{s}^{+}h^{0}$, $D_{s}^{\ast+}h^{0}$, and $D^{+}h^{0}$ decay modes. Along with rare decay modes, we report improved measurements of the color-suppressed decay branching fractions $\mathcal{B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to D^{0}η)$ = (26.6 $\pm$ 1.2 $\pm$ 2.1) $\times$ $10^{-5}$ and $\mathcal{B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to D^{0}\bar{K}^{0})$ = (5.6 $\pm$ 0.5 $\pm$ 0.2) $\times$ $10^{-5}$. The first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively.

All-sky search for gravitational wave emission from scalar boson clouds around spinning black holes in LIGO O3 data

This paper describes the first all-sky search for long-duration, quasi-monochromatic gravitational-wave signals emitted by ultralight scalar boson clouds around spinning black holes using data from the third observing run of Advanced LIGO. We analyze the frequency range from 20~Hz to 610~Hz, over a small frequency derivative range around zero, and use multiple frequency resolutions to be robust towards possible signal frequency wanderings. Outliers from this search are followed up using two different methods, one more suitable for nearly monochromatic signals, and the other more robust towards frequency fluctuations. We do not find any evidence for such signals and set upper limits on the signal strain amplitude, the most stringent being $\approx10^{-25}$ at around 130~Hz. We interpret these upper limits as both an "exclusion region" in the boson mass/black hole mass plane and the maximum detectable distance for a given boson mass, based on an assumption of the age of the black hole/boson cloud system.

Evidence of a new excited charmed baryon decaying to $Σ_{c}(2455)^{0,++} π^{\pm}$

We present the study of $\bar{B}^{0} \to Σ_{c}(2455)^{0,++} π^{\pm} \bar{p}$ decays based on $772\times 10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ events collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. The $Σ_{c}(2455)^{0,++} $ candidates are reconstructed via their decay to $Λ_{c}^{+} π^{\mp}$ and $Λ_{c}^{+}$ decays to $pK^{-}π^{+},~pK_{S}^{0},$ and $Λπ^{+}$ final states. The corresponding branching fractions are measured to be ${\cal B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to Σ_{c}(2455)^{0} π^{+} \bar{p}) = (1.09 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.07)\times10^{-4}$ and ${\cal B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to Σ_{c}(2455)^{++} π^{-} \bar{p}) = (1.84\pm 0.11 \pm 0.12)\times 10^{-4}$, which are consistent with the world average values with improved precision. A new structure is found in the $M_{Σ_{c}(2455)^{0,++}π^{\pm}}$ spectrum with a significance of $4.2σ$ including systematic uncertainty. The structure is possibly an excited $Λ_{c}^{+}$ and is tentatively named $Λ_{c}(2910)^{+}$. Its mass and width are measured to be $(2913.8 \pm 5.6 \pm 3.8)$ MeV/$c^{2}$ and $(51.8\pm20.0 \pm 18.8)$ MeV, respectively. The products of branching fractions for the $Λ_{c}(2910)^{+}$ are measured to be ${\cal B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to Λ_{c}(2910)^{+}\bar{p})\times{\cal B}(Λ_{c}(2910)^{+} \to Σ_{c}(2455)^{0}π^{+}) = (9.5 \pm 3.6 \pm 1.6)\times 10^{-6}$ and ${\cal B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to Λ_{c} (2910)^{+}\bar{p})\times {\cal B}(Λ_{c}(2910)^{+} \to Σ_{c}(2455)^{++}π^{-}) = (1.24 \pm 0.35 \pm 0.10)\times 10^{-5}$. Here, the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively.

First decay-time-dependent analysis of $B^{0} \to K_{S}^{0} π^{0}$ at Belle II

We report measurements of the branching fraction ($\mathcal{B}$) and direct $CP$-violating asymmetry ($A_{CP}$) of the charmless decay $B^{0} \to K^0 π^0$ at Belle II. A sample of $e^{+} e^{-}$ collisions, corresponding to $189.8 fb^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, recorded at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance is used for the first decay-time-dependent analysis of these decays within the experiment. We reconstruct about 135 signal candidates, and measure $\mathcal{B}(B^{0} \to K^{0} π^{0})= [11.0 \pm 1.2 (stat) \pm 1.0 (syst)] \times 10^{-6}$ and $A_{CP} (B^{0} \to K^{0} π^{0})= -0.41_{-0.32}^{+0.30} (stat) \pm 0.09 (syst)$.

First joint observation by the underground gravitational-wave detector, KAGRA, with GEO600

We report the results of the first joint observation of the KAGRA detector with GEO600. KAGRA is a cryogenic and underground gravitational-wave detector consisting of a laser interferometer with three-kilometer arms, and located in Kamioka, Gifu, Japan. GEO600 is a British--German laser interferometer with 600 m arms, and located near Hannover, Germany. GEO600 and KAGRA performed a joint observing run from April 7 to 20, 2020. We present the results of the joint analysis of the GEO--KAGRA data for transient gravitational-wave signals, including the coalescence of neutron-star binaries and generic unmodeled transients. We also perform dedicated searches for binary coalescence signals and generic transients associated with gamma-ray burst events observed during the joint run. No gravitational-wave events were identified. We evaluate the minimum detectable amplitude for various types of transient signals and the spacetime volume for which the network is sensitive to binary neutron-star coalescences. We also place lower limits on the distances to the gamma-ray bursts analysed based on the non-detection of an associated gravitational-wave signal for several signal models, including binary coalescences. These analyses demonstrate the feasibility and utility of KAGRA as a member of the global gravitational-wave detector network.

GWTC-2.1: Deep Extended Catalog of Compact Binary Coalescences Observed by LIGO and Virgo During the First Half of the Third Observing Run

The second Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalog reported on 39 compact binary coalescences observed by the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors between 1 April 2019 15:00 UTC and 1 October 2019 15:00 UTC. We present GWTC-2.1, which reports on a deeper list of candidate events observed over the same period. We analyze the final version of the strain data over this period with improved calibration and better subtraction of excess noise, which has been publicly released. We employ three matched-filter search pipelines for candidate identification, and estimate the astrophysical probability for each candidate event. While GWTC-2 used a false alarm rate threshold of 2 per year, we include in GWTC-2.1, 1201 candidates that pass a false alarm rate threshold of 2 per day. We calculate the source properties of a subset of 44 high-significance candidates that have an astrophysical probability greater than 0.5. Of these candidates, 36 have been reported in GWTC-2. If the 8 additional high-significance candidates presented here are astrophysical, the mass range of events that are unambiguously identified as binary black holes (both objects $\geq 3M_\odot$) is increased compared to GWTC-2, with total masses from $\sim 14 M_\odot$ for GW190924_021846 to $\sim 182 M_\odot$ for GW190426_190642. The primary components of two new candidate events (GW190403_051519 and GW190426_190642) fall in the mass gap predicted by pair instability supernova theory. We also expand the population of binaries with significantly asymmetric mass ratios reported in GWTC-2 by an additional two events (the mass ratio is less than $0.65$ and $0.44$ at $90\%$ probability for GW190403_051519 and GW190917_114630 respectively), and find that 2 of the 8 new events have effective inspiral spins $χ_\mathrm{eff} > 0$ (at $90\%$ credibility), while no binary is consistent with $χ_\mathrm{eff} < 0$ at the same significance.

Magnetic ground states of a model for (TM)Nb$_3$S$_6$, TM=Co, Fe, Ni

The transition-metal intercalated dichalcogenide CoNb$_3$S$_6$ is a triangular antiferromagnet that has recently been shown to exhibit a large anomalous Hall effect (AHE) below the Néel temperature, even though the response to an external field is very small. This suggests that there is an interesting magnetic structure that interacts with the electronic structure to yield the AHE, as collinear antiferromagnets cannot exhibit a nonzero AHE. We propose a model for magnetic transition-metal intercalated dichalcogenides and examine its ground state as function of interaction parameters. The model exhibits transitions between planar spin spirals, non-planar spin spirals, and a particular non-coplanar so-called $3q$ state. This latter state must exhibit a nonzero AHE, while the spin spirals do not.

Measurement of ${\mathcal B}$($B_s \rightarrow D_s X$) with $B_s$ Semileptonic Tagging

We report the first direct measurement of the inclusive branching fraction ${\mathcal B}(B_s \rightarrow D_s X)$ via $B_s$ tagging in $e^+e^-\toΥ$(5S) events. Tagging is accomplished through a partial reconstruction of semileptonic decays $B_s \rightarrow D_s X \ell ν$, where $X$ denotes unreconstructed additional hadrons or photons and $\ell$ is an electron or muon. With 121.4 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected at the $Υ$(5S) resonance by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider, we obtain ${\mathcal B}(B_s \rightarrow D_s X)$ = $(60.2 \pm 5.8 \pm 2.3)$\%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

SuperKEKB electron-positron collision data corresponding to 189~fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity and containing $198 \times 10^6 B\bar{B}$ pairs collected with the Belle II detector are used. Measurement of the branching fraction and $CP$ asymmetry for $B\to\bar{D}^{0} π$ decays

We measure the branching fractions and $CP$ asymmetries for the decays $B^{0}\to \bar{D}^{0}π^{0}$ and $B^{+}\to \bar{D}^{0}π^{+}$, using a data sample of $772\times 10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. The branching fractions obtained and direct $CP$ asymmetries are $\mathcal{B}(B^{0}\to \bar{D}^{0}π^{0}) = [2.70 \pm 0.06~ \text{(stat.)} \pm 0.10~ \text{(syst.)}] \times 10^{-4}$, $\mathcal{B}(B^{+}\to \bar{D}^{0}π^{+}) = [4.53 \pm 0.02~ \text{(stat.)} \pm 0.15~ \text{(syst.)}] \times 10^{-3}$, $ {\cal A}_{CP}(B^{0}\to \bar{D}^{0}π^{0}) = [+0.42 \pm 2.05~ \text{(stat.)} \pm 1.22~ \text{(syst.)}]\%$, and $ {\cal A}_{CP}(B^{+}\to \bar{D}^{0}π^{+}) = [+0.19 \pm 0.36~ \text{(stat.)} \pm 0.57~ \text{(syst.)}]\%$. The measurements of $\mathcal{B}$ are the most precise to date and are in good agreement with previous results, as is the measurement of ${\cal A}_{CP}(B^{+}\to \bar{D}^{0}π^{+})$. The measurement of ${\cal A}_{CP}$ for $B^{0}\to \bar{D}^{0}π^{0}$ is the first for this mode, and the value is consistent with Standard Model expectations.

Measurement of the branching fractions of the $B^+ \to η\ell^+ ν_{\ell} $ and $B^+ \to η^{\prime} \ell^+ ν_{\ell} $ decays with signal-side only reconstruction in the full $q^2$ range

The branching fractions of the decays $B^{+} \to η\ell^{+} ν_{\ell}$ and $B^{+} \to η^{\prime} \ell^{+} ν_{\ell}$ are measured, where $\ell$ is either an electron or a muon, using a data sample of $711\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ containing $772 \times 10^6 B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. To reduce the dependence of the result on the form factor model, the measurement is performed over the entire $q^2$ range. The resulting branching fractions are ${\cal B}(B^{+} \rightarrow η\ell^{+} ν_{\ell}) = (2.83 \pm 0.55_{\rm (stat.)} \pm 0.34_{\rm (syst.)}) \times 10^{-5}$ and ${\cal B}(B^{+} \rightarrow η' \ell^{+} ν_{\ell}) = (2.79 \pm 1.29_{\rm (stat.)} \pm 0.30_{\rm (syst.)}) \times 10^{-5}$.

Measurement of the cluster position resolution of the Belle II Silicon Vertex Detector

The Silicon Vertex Detector (SVD), with its four double-sided silicon strip sensor layers, is one of the two vertex sub-detectors of Belle II operating at SuperKEKB collider (KEK, Japan). Since 2019 and the start of the data taking, the SVD has demonstrated a reliable and highly efficient operation, even running in an environment with harsh beam backgrounds that are induced by the world's highest instantaneous luminosity. In order to provide the best quality track reconstruction with an efficient pattern recognition and track fit, and to correctly propagate the uncertainty on the hit's position to the track parameters, it is crucial to precisely estimate the resolution of the cluster position measurement. Several methods for estimating the position resolution directly from the data will be discussed.

Narrowband searches for continuous and long-duration transient gravitational waves from known pulsars in the LIGO-Virgo third observing run

Isolated neutron stars that are asymmetric with respect to their spin axis are possible sources of detectable continuous gravitational waves. This paper presents a fully-coherent search for such signals from eighteen pulsars in data from LIGO and Virgo's third observing run (O3). For known pulsars, efficient and sensitive matched-filter searches can be carried out if one assumes the gravitational radiation is phase-locked to the electromagnetic emission. In the search presented here, we relax this assumption and allow the frequency and frequency time-derivative of the gravitational waves to vary in a small range around those inferred from electromagnetic observations. We find no evidence for continuous gravitational waves, and set upper limits on the strain amplitude for each target. These limits are more constraining for seven of the targets than the spin-down limit defined by ascribing all rotational energy loss to gravitational radiation. In an additional search we look in O3 data for long-duration (hours-months) transient gravitational waves in the aftermath of pulsar glitches for six targets with a total of nine glitches. We report two marginal outliers from this search, but find no clear evidence for such emission either. The resulting duration-dependent strain upper limits do not surpass indirect energy constraints for any of these targets.

Search for $Z^{'} \rightarrow μ^{+} μ^{-}$ in the $L_μ{-} L_τ$ gauge-symmetric model at Belle

We search for a new gauge boson $Z'$ that couples only to heavy leptons and their corresponding neutrinos in the process $e^{+} e^{-} \rightarrow Z'(\rightarrow μ^{+}μ^{-}) μ^{+}μ^{-}$, using a 643 fb$^{-1}$ data sample collected by the Belle experiment at or near the $Υ(1S,2S,3S,4S,5S)$ resonances at the KEKB collider. For the first time, effects due to initial state radiation are used in estimating the detection efficiency. No signal is observed in the mass range of 0.212 \ -- 10 GeV/${\it c}^2$ and we set an upper limit on the coupling strengh, $g'$, constraining $Z'$ as a possible contributor to the anomalous magnetic dipole moment of muon.

This search uses $Υ(1S)$ mesons produced in $π^+π^-Υ(1S)$ transitions. We do not find any significant signal, so we provide upper limits on the branching fractions at the 90% confidence level.

Search for continuous gravitational wave emission from the Milky Way center in O3 LIGO--Virgo data

We present a directed search for continuous gravitational wave (CW) signals emitted by spinning neutron stars located in the inner parsecs of the Galactic Center (GC). Compelling evidence for the presence of a numerous population of neutron stars has been reported in the literature, turning this region into a very interesting place to look for CWs. In this search, data from the full O3 LIGO--Virgo run in the detector frequency band $[10,2000]\rm~Hz$ have been used. No significant detection was found and 95$\%$ confidence level upper limits on the signal strain amplitude were computed, over the full search band, with the deepest limit of about $7.6\times 10^{-26}$ at $\simeq 142\rm~Hz$. These results are significantly more constraining than those reported in previous searches. We use these limits to put constraints on the fiducial neutron star ellipticity and r-mode amplitude. These limits can be also translated into constraints in the black hole mass -- boson mass plane for a hypothetical population of boson clouds around spinning black holes located in the GC.

Search for continuous gravitational waves from 20 accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars in O3 LIGO data

Results are presented of searches for continuous gravitational waves from 20 accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars with accurately measured spin frequencies and orbital parameters, using data from the third observing run of the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors. The search algorithm uses a hidden Markov model, where the transition probabilities allow the frequency to wander according to an unbiased random walk, while the $\mathcal{J}$-statistic maximum-likelihood matched filter tracks the binary orbital phase. Three narrow sub-bands are searched for each target, centered on harmonics of the measured spin frequency. The search yields 16 candidates, consistent with a false alarm probability of 30% per sub-band and target searched. These candidates, along with one candidate from an additional target-of-opportunity search done for SAX J1808.4$-$3658, which was in outburst during one month of the observing run, cannot be confidently associated with a known noise source. Additional follow-up does not provide convincing evidence that any are a true astrophysical signal. When all candidates are assumed non-astrophysical, upper limits are set on the maximum wave strain detectable at 95% confidence, $h_0^{95\%}$. The strictest constraint is $h_0^{95\%} = 4.7\times 10^{-26}$ from IGR J17062$-$6143. Constraints on the detectable wave strain from each target lead to constraints on neutron star ellipticity and $r$-mode amplitude, the strictest of which are $ε^{95\%} = 3.1\times 10^{-7}$ and $α^{95\%} = 1.8\times 10^{-5}$ respectively. This analysis is the most comprehensive and sensitive search of continuous gravitational waves from accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars to date.

Search for tetraquark states $X_{cc\bar{s}\bar{s}}$ in $D_{s}^{+}D_{s}^{+}~(D_{s}^{*+}D_{s}^{*+})$ final states at Belle

A search for double-heavy tetraquark state candidates $X_{cc\bar{s}\bar{s}}$ decaying to $D_{s}^{+}D_{s}^{+}$ and $D_{s}^{*+} D_{s}^{*+}$ is presented for the first time using the data samples of 102 million $Υ(1S)$ and 158 million $Υ(2S)$ events, and the data samples at $\sqrt{s}$ = 10.52~GeV, 10.58~GeV, and 10.867~GeV corresponding to integrated luminosities of 89.5~fb$^{-1}$, 711.0~fb$^{-1}$, and 121.4~fb$^{-1}$, respectively, accumulated with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy electron-positron collider. The invariant-mass spectra of the $D_{s}^{+}D_{s}^{+}$ and $D_{s}^{*+} D_{s}^{*+}$ are studied to search for possible resonances. No significant signals are observed, and the 90\% confidence level upper limits on the product branching fractions [${\cal B}(Υ(1S,2S) \to X_{cc\bar{s}\bar{s}} + anything) \times {\cal B}(X_{cc\bar{s}\bar{s}} \to D_{s}^{+}D_{s}^{+}(D_{s}^{*+} D_{s}^{*+}))$] in $Υ(1S,2S)$ inclusive decays and the product values of Born cross section and branching fraction [$σ(e^+e^- \to X_{cc\bar{s}\bar{s}} + anything ) \times {\cal B}(X_{cc\bar{s}\bar{s}} \to D_{s}^{+}D_{s}^{+}(D_{s}^{*+} D_{s}^{*+}))$] in $e^+e^-$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 10.52~GeV, 10.58~GeV, and 10.867~GeV under different assumptions of $X_{cc\bar{s}\bar{s}}$ masses and widths are obtained.

Search of the Early O3 LIGO Data for Continuous Gravitational Waves from the Cassiopeia A and Vela Jr. Supernova Remnants

We present directed searches for continuous gravitational waves from the neutron stars in the Cassiopeia A (Cas A) and Vela Jr. supernova remnants. We carry out the searches in the LIGO data from the first six months of the third Advanced LIGO and Virgo observing run, using the Weave semi-coherent method, which sums matched-filter detection-statistic values over many time segments spanning the observation period. No gravitational wave signal is detected in the search band of 20--976 Hz for assumed source ages greater than 300 years for Cas A and greater than 700 years for Vela Jr. Estimates from simulated continuous wave signals indicate we achieve the most sensitive results to date across the explored parameter space volume, probing to strain magnitudes as low as ~$6.3\times10^{-26}$ for Cas A and ~$5.6\times10^{-26}$ for Vela Jr. at frequencies near 166 Hz at 95% efficiency.

Searches for Gravitational Waves from Known Pulsars at Two Harmonics in the Second and Third LIGO-Virgo Observing Runs

We present a targeted search for continuous gravitational waves (GWs) from 236 pulsars using data from the third observing run of LIGO and Virgo (O3) combined with data from the second observing run (O2). Searches were for emission from the $l=m=2$ mass quadrupole mode with a frequency at only twice the pulsar rotation frequency (single harmonic) and the $l=2, m=1,2$ modes with a frequency of both once and twice the rotation frequency (dual harmonic). No evidence of GWs was found so we present 95\% credible upper limits on the strain amplitudes $h_0$ for the single harmonic search along with limits on the pulsars' mass quadrupole moments $Q_{22}$ and ellipticities $\varepsilon$. Of the pulsars studied, 23 have strain amplitudes that are lower than the limits calculated from their electromagnetically measured spin-down rates. These pulsars include the millisecond pulsars J0437\textminus4715 and J0711\textminus6830 which have spin-down ratios of 0.87 and 0.57 respectively. For nine pulsars, their spin-down limits have been surpassed for the first time. For the Crab and Vela pulsars our limits are factors of $\sim 100$ and $\sim 20$ more constraining than their spin-down limits, respectively. For the dual harmonic searches, new limits are placed on the strain amplitudes $C_{21}$ and $C_{22}$. For 23 pulsars we also present limits on the emission amplitude assuming dipole radiation as predicted by Brans-Dicke theory.

Study of $\overline{B}{}^0\rightarrow D^{+}h^{-} (h=K/π)$ decays at Belle

We present a measurement of the branching fractions of the Cabibbo favored $\overline{B}{}^0\rightarrow D^{+}π^{-}$ and the Cabibbo suppressed $\overline{B}{}^0\rightarrow D^{+}K^{-}$ decays. We find $\mathcal{B}(\overline{B}{}^0\rightarrow D^{+}π^{-}) = (2.48 \pm 0.01 \pm 0.09 \pm 0.04) \times 10^{-3}$ and $\mathcal{B}(\overline{B}{}^0\rightarrow D^{+}K^{-})= (2.03 \pm 0.05 \pm 0.07 \pm 0.03) \times 10^{-4}$ decays, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third uncertainty is due to the $D^{+} \rightarrow K^{-}π^{+}π^{+}$ branching fraction. The ratio of branching fractions of $\overline{B}{}^0\rightarrow D^{+}K^{-}$ and $\overline{B}{}^0\rightarrow D^{+}π^{-}$ is measured to be $R^{D} = [8.19 \pm 0.20(\rm stat) \pm 0.23(\rm syst)] \times 10^{-2} $. These measurements are performed using the full Belle data set, which corresponds to $772 \times 10^{6} B\overline{B} $ pairs.

Study on Electropolishing Conditions for 650 MHz Niobium SRF Cavity

The PIP II linear accelerator includes different types of niobium SRF cavities including 650 MHz elliptical low (0.61) and high (0.92) beta cavities. The elliptical cavity surface is processed with the electropolishing method. The elliptical cavities especially the low-$β$ 650 MHz cavities showed a rough equator surface after the EP was per-formed with the standard EP conditions. This work was focused to study the effect of different EP parameters, including cathode surface area, temperature and voltage, and optimize them to improve the cavity surface.

The Silicon Vertex Detector of the Belle II Experiment

In 2019 the Belle II experiment started data taking at the asymmetric SuperKEKB collider (KEK, Japan) operating at the Y(4S) resonance. Belle II will search for new physics beyond the Standard Model by collecting an integrated luminosity of 50~ab$^{-1}$. The silicon vertex detector (SVD), consisting of four layers of double-sided silicon strip sensors, is one of the two vertex sub-detectors. The SVD extrapolates the tracks to the inner pixel detector (PXD) with enough precision to correctly identify hits in the PXD belonging to the track. In addition the SVD has standalone tracking capability and utilizes ionization to enhance particle identification in the low momentum region. The SVD is operating reliably and with high efficiency, despite exposure to the harsh beam background of the highest peak-luminosity collider ever built. High signal-to-noise ratio and hit efficiency have been measured, as well as the spatial resolution; all these quantities show excellent stability over time. Data-simulation agreement on cluster properties has recently been improved through a careful tuning of the simulation. The precise hit-time resolution can be exploited to reject out-of-time hits induced by beam background, which will make the SVD more robust against higher levels of background. During the first three years of running, radiation damage effects on strip noise, sensor currents and depletion voltage have been observed, as well as some coupling capacitor failure due to intense radiation bursts. None of these effects cause significant degradation in the detector performance.

The study of $γγ\toγψ(2S)$ at Belle

Using $980~\rm fb^{-1}$ of data on and around the $Υ(nS)(n=1,2,3,4,5)$ resonances collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider, the two-photon process $γγ\to γψ(2S)$ is studied from the threshold to $4.2~{\rm GeV}$ for the first time. Two structures are seen in the invariant mass distribution of $γψ(2S)$: one at $M_{R_1} = 3922.4\pm 6.5 \pm 2.0~{\rm MeV}/c^2$ with a width of $Γ_{R_1} = 22\pm 17\pm 4~{\rm MeV}$, and another at $M_{R_2} = 4014.3\pm 4.0 \pm 1.5~{\rm MeV}/c^2$ with a width of $Γ_{R_2} = 4\pm 11 \pm 6~{\rm MeV}$; the signals are parametrized with the incoherent sum of two Breit-Wigner functions. The first structure is consistent with the $X(3915)$ or the $χ_{c2}(3930)$, and the local statistical significance is determined to be $3.1σ$ with the systematic uncertainties included. The second matches none of the known charmonium or charmoniumlike states, and its global significance is determined to be $2.8σ$ including the look-elsewhere effect. The production rates are $Γ_{γγ}{\cal B}(R_1\toγψ(2S)) = 9.8\pm 3.6\pm 1.2~{\rm eV}$ assuming $(J^{PC}, |λ|) =(0^{++}, 0)$ or $2.0\pm 0.7\pm 0.2~{\rm eV}$ with $(2^{++}, 2)$ for the first structure and $Γ_{γγ}{\cal B}(R_2\toγψ(2S)) = 6.2\pm 2.2\pm 0.8~{\rm eV}$ with $(0^{++}, 0)$ or $1.2\pm 0.4\pm 0.2~{\rm eV}$ with $(2^{++}, 2)$ for the second one. Here, the first errors are statistical and the second systematic, and $λ$ is the helicity.

$τ$ lepton mass measurement at Belle II

The reconstruction of tau-pair production, $e^{+}e^{-} \to τ^{+}τ^{-}$, from the subsequent 3-prong ($τ^{+} \rightarrow π^{+} π^{-} π^{+} \barν_τ$) and 1-prong ($τ^{-} \to \ell^{-} \barν_{\ell} ν_τ$, $τ^{-} \to h^{-} ν_τ$ or $τ^{-} \to π^{-} π^0 ν_τ$) decays, is presented using 8.8 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^{+}e^{-}$ collision data of Belle II at the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = m_{Υ(4S)}$. The pseudomass technique developed by the ARGUS experiment is used to measure the $τ$-lepton mass $m_τ$ in the 3-prong $τ^{+} \to π^{+} π^{-} π^{+} \barν_τ $ decay, resulting in $m_τ = 1777.28 \pm 0.75~{\rm (stat.)} \pm 0.33 ~{\rm (sys.)}~{\rm{MeV}/\rm{c}^2}$.

All-sky search for long-duration gravitational-wave bursts in the third Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo run

After the detection of gravitational waves from compact binary coalescences, the search for transient gravitational-wave signals with less well-defined waveforms for which matched filtering is not well-suited is one of the frontiers for gravitational-wave astronomy. Broadly classified into "short" $ \lesssim 1~$\,s and "long" $ \gtrsim 1~$\,s duration signals, these signals are expected from a variety of astrophysical processes, including non-axisymmetric deformations in magnetars or eccentric binary black hole coalescences. In this work, we present a search for long-duration gravitational-wave transients from Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo's third observing run from April 2019 to March 2020. For this search, we use minimal assumptions for the sky location, event time, waveform morphology, and duration of the source. The search covers the range of $2~\text{--}~ 500$~s in duration and a frequency band of $24 - 2048$ Hz. We find no significant triggers within this parameter space; we report sensitivity limits on the signal strength of gravitational waves characterized by the root-sum-square amplitude $h_{\mathrm{rss}}$ as a function of waveform morphology. These $h_{\mathrm{rss}}$ limits improve upon the results from the second observing run by an average factor of 1.8.

All-sky search for short gravitational-wave bursts in the third Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo run

This paper presents the results of a search for generic short-duration gravitational-wave transients in data from the third observing run of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo. Transients with durations of milliseconds to a few seconds in the 24--4096 Hz frequency band are targeted by the search, with no assumptions made regarding the incoming signal direction, polarization or morphology. Gravitational waves from compact binary coalescences that have been identified by other targeted analyses are detected, but no statistically significant evidence for other gravitational wave bursts is found. Sensitivities to a variety of signals are presented. These include updated upper limits on the source rate-density as a function of the characteristic frequency of the signal, which are roughly an order of magnitude better than previous upper limits. This search is sensitive to sources radiating as little as $\sim$10$^{-10} M_{\odot} c^2$ in gravitational waves at $\sim$70 Hz from a distance of 10~kpc, with 50\% detection efficiency at a false alarm rate of one per century. The sensitivity of this search to two plausible astrophysical sources is estimated: neutron star f-modes, which may be excited by pulsar glitches, as well as selected core-collapse supernova models.

All-sky, all-frequency directional search for persistent gravitational-waves from Advanced LIGO's and Advanced Virgo's first three observing runs

We present the first results from an all-sky all-frequency (ASAF) search for an anisotropic stochastic gravitational-wave background using the data from the first three observing runs of the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors. Upper limit maps on broadband anisotropies of a persistent stochastic background were published for all observing runs of the LIGO-Virgo detectors. However, a broadband analysis is likely to miss narrowband signals as the signal-to-noise ratio of a narrowband signal can be significantly reduced when combined with detector output from other frequencies. Data folding and the computationally efficient analysis pipeline, {\tt PyStoch}, enable us to perform the radiometer map-making at every frequency bin. We perform the search at 3072 {\tt{HEALPix}} equal area pixels uniformly tiling the sky and in every frequency bin of width $1/32$~Hz in the range $20-1726$~Hz, except for bins that are likely to contain instrumental artefacts and hence are notched. We do not find any statistically significant evidence for the existence of narrowband gravitational-wave signals in the analyzed frequency bins. Therefore, we place $95\%$ confidence upper limits on the gravitational-wave strain for each pixel-frequency pair, the limits are in the range $(0.030 - 9.6) \times10^{-24}$. In addition, we outline a method to identify candidate pixel-frequency pairs that could be followed up by a more sensitive (and potentially computationally expensive) search, e.g., a matched-filtering-based analysis, to look for fainter nearly monochromatic coherent signals. The ASAF analysis is inherently independent of models describing any spectral or spatial distribution of power. We demonstrate that the ASAF results can be appropriately combined over frequencies and sky directions to successfully recover the broadband directional and isotropic results.

Search for Gravitational Waves Associated with Gamma-Ray Bursts Detected by Fermi and Swift During the LIGO-Virgo Run O3b

We search for gravitational-wave signals associated with gamma-ray bursts detected by the Fermi and Swift satellites during the second half of the third observing run of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo (1 November 2019 15:00 UTC-27 March 2020 17:00 UTC).We conduct two independent searches: a generic gravitational-wave transients search to analyze 86 gamma-ray bursts and an analysis to target binary mergers with at least one neutron star as short gamma-ray burst progenitors for 17 events. We find no significant evidence for gravitational-wave signals associated with any of these gamma-ray bursts. A weighted binomial test of the combined results finds no evidence for sub-threshold gravitational wave signals associated with this GRB ensemble either. We use several source types and signal morphologies during the searches, resulting in lower bounds on the estimated distance to each gamma-ray burst. Finally, we constrain the population of low luminosity short gamma-ray bursts using results from the first to the third observing runs of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo. The resulting population is in accordance with the local binary neutron star merger rate.

In the absence of a signal, $90\%$ confidence-level upper limits are set on the branching fractions of these decays in the range $(1.8$-$4.0)\times 10^{-8}$. We set the world's first limits on the first four channels and improve the existing limits by an order of magnitude for the last two channels.

Search for subsolar-mass binaries in the first half of Advanced LIGO and Virgo's third observing run

We report on a search for compact binary coalescences where at least one binary component has a mass between 0.2 $M_\odot$ and 1.0 $M_\odot$ in Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo data collected between 1 April 2019 1500 UTC and 1 October 2019 1500 UTC. We extend previous analyses in two main ways: we include data from the Virgo detector and we allow for more unequal mass systems, with mass ratio $q \geq 0.1$. We do not report any gravitational-wave candidates. The most significant trigger has a false alarm rate of 0.14 $\mathrm{yr}^{-1}$. This implies an upper limit on the merger rate of subsolar binaries in the range $[220-24200] \mathrm{Gpc}^{-3} \mathrm{yr}^{-1}$, depending on the chirp mass of the binary. We use this upper limit to derive astrophysical constraints on two phenomenological models that could produce subsolar-mass compact objects. One is an isotropic distribution of equal-mass primordial black holes. Using this model, we find that the fraction of dark matter in primordial black holes is $f_\mathrm{PBH} \equiv Ω_\mathrm{PBH} / Ω_\mathrm{DM} \lesssim 6\%$. The other is a dissipative dark matter model, in which fermionic dark matter can collapse and form black holes. The upper limit on the fraction of dark matter black holes depends on the minimum mass of the black holes that can be formed: the most constraining result is obtained at $M_\mathrm{min}=1 M_\odot$, where $f_\mathrm{DBH} \equiv Ω_\mathrm{PBH} / Ω_\mathrm{DM} \lesssim 0.003\%$. These are the tightest limits on spinning subsolar-mass binaries to date.

A calibration of the Belle II hadronic tag-side reconstruction algorithm with $B \rightarrow X\ell ν$ decays

Tag-side reconstruction is an important method for reconstructing $B$ meson decays with missing energy. The Belle II tag-side reconstruction algorithm, Full Event Interpretation, relies on a hierarchical reconstruction of $B$ meson decays with multivariate classification employed at each stage of reconstruction. Given the large numbers of classifiers employed and decay chains reconstructed, the performance of the algorithm on data and simulation differs significantly. Here, calibration factors are derived for hadronic tag-side $B$ decays by measuring a signal side decay, $B \rightarrow X\ell ν$, in $34.6$ fb$^{-1}$ of Belle II data. For a very loose selection on the tag-side $B$ multivariate classifier, the calibration factors are $0.65 \pm 0.02$ and $0.83 \pm 0.03$ for tag-side $B^{+}$ and $B^{0}$ mesons, respectively.

Charmless $B$ decay reconstruction in 2019 Belle II data

We report on the reconstruction of various charmless $B$ decays from electron-positron collisions at the energy corresponding to the $Υ(4S)$ resonance collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider. We use simulation to devise optimized event selections and apply them to the full data set collected in 2019, corresponding to 8.7\,fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. We fit the difference between half of the collision energy and the $B$ candidate energy (in the $Υ(4S)$ frame) for events restricted to a signal-rich range in beam-energy-constrained mass to search for charmless signals. Signal yields of approximately 80, 15, 20, 30, 90, and 160 decays are reconstructed for the channels $B^0 \to K^+π^-$, $B^0 \to π^+π^-$, $B^+ \to K^0_S(\to π^+π^-)π^+$, $B^+ \to K^+π^0(\to γγ)$, $B^+ \to K^+K^-K^+$, and $B^+ \to K^+π^-π^+$, respectively. Yields and background contaminations are compatible with those expected from simulation and comparable with those obtained by the Belle experiment. The results show a good understanding of the detector performance and offer a reliable basis to assess projections for future reach.

Dalitz analysis of $D^{0}\to K^{-}π^{+}η$ decays at Belle

We present the results of the first Dalitz plot analysis of the decay $D^{0}\to K^{-}π^{+}η$. The analysis is performed on a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 953 $\rm{fb}^{-1}$ collected by the Belle detector at the asymmetric-energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ KEKB collider. The Dalitz plot is well described by a combination of the six resonant decay channels $\bar{K}^{*}(892)^0η$, $K^{-}a_0(980)^+$, $K^{-}a_2(1320)^+$, $\bar{K}^{*}(1410)^0η$, $K^{*}(1680)^-π^{+}$ and $K_2^{*}(1980)^-π^{+}$, together with $Kπ$ and $Kη$ S-wave components. The decays $K^{*}(1680)^{-}\to K^{-}η$ and $K_{2}^{*}(1980)^{-}\to K^{-}η$ are observed for the first time. We measure ratio of the branching fractions, $\frac{\mathcal{B}(D^{0}\to K^{-}π^{+}η)}{\mathcal{B}(D^{0}\to K^{-}π^{+})}=0.500\pm0.002{\rm(stat)}\pm0.020{\rm(syst)}\pm0.003{\rm (\mathcal{B}_{PDG})}$. Using the Dalitz fit result, the ratio $\frac{\mathcal{B}(K^{*}(1680)\to Kη)}{\mathcal{B}(K^{*}(1680)\to Kπ)}$ is measured to be $0.11\pm0.02{\rm(stat)}^{+0.06}_{-0.04}{\rm(syst)}\pm0.04{\rm(\mathcal{B}_{\text{PDG}})}$; this is much lower than the theoretical expectations ($\approx1$) made under the assumption that $K^{*}(1680)$ is a pure $1^{3}D_1$ state. The product branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(D^0\to [K_2^{*}(1980)^-\to K^{-}η]π^{+})=(2.2^{+1.7}_{-1.9})\times10^{-4}$ is determined. In addition, the $πη^{\prime}$ contribution to the $a_0(980)^{\pm}$ resonance shape is confirmed with 10.1$σ$ statistical significance using the three-channel Flatté model. We also measure $\mathcal{B}(D^0\to\bar{K}^{*}(892)^0η)=(1.41^{+0.13}_{-0.12})\%$. This is consistent with, and more precise than, the current world average $(1.02\pm0.30)\%$, deviates with a significance of more than $3σ$ from the theoretical predictions of (0.51-0.92)%.

Measurement of Hadronic Mass Moments $\langle M_X^n \rangle $ in $B \rightarrow X_c \ell ν$ Decays at Belle II

We present measurements of the first six hadronic mass moments in semileptonic $B \rightarrow X_c \ell ν$ decays. The hadronic mass moments, together with other observables of inclusive $B$ decays, can be used to determine the CKM matrix element $|{V_{cb}}|$ and mass of the $b$-quark $m_b$ in the context of Heavy Quark Expansions of QCD. The Belle~II data recorded at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance in 2019 and 2020 (March-July), corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $34.6\;\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$, is used for this measurement. The decay $Υ(4S) \rightarrow B \overline{B}$ is reconstructed by applying the hadronic tagging algorithm provided by the Full Event Interpretation to fully reconstruct one $B$ meson. The second $B$ meson is reconstructed inclusively by selecting a high-momentum lepton. The $X_c$ system is identified by the remaining reconstructed tracks and clusters in the electromagnetic calorimeter. We report preliminary results for the hadronic mass moments $\langle M_X^n \rangle $ with $n=1,\dots,6$, measured as a function of a lower cut on the lepton momentum in the signal $B$ rest frame.

Measurement of two-particle correlations in hadronic $e^{+}e^{-}$ collisions at Belle

The enhancement of charged-particle pairs with large pseudorapidity difference and small azimuthal angle difference, often referred to as the ``ridge signal'', is a phenomenon widely observed in high multiplicity proton-proton, proton-ion and deutron-ion collisions, which is not yet fully understood. In heavy-ion collisions, the hydrodynamic expansion of the Quark-Gluon Plasma is one of the possible explanations of the origin of the ridge signal. Measurements in the $e^+e^-$ collision system, without the complexities introduced by hadron structure in the initial state, can serve as a complementary probe to examine the formation of a ridge signal. The first measurement of two-particle angular correlation functions in high multiplicity $e^+e^-$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=10.52$ GeV is reported. The hadronic $e^+e^-$ annihilation data collected by the Belle detector at KEKB are used in this study. Two-particle angular correlation functions are measured over the full azimuth and large pseudorapidity intervals which are defined by either the electron beam axis or the event thrust as a function of charged particle multiplicity. The measurement in the event thrust analysis, with mostly outgoing quark pairs determining the reference axis, is sensitive to the region of additional soft gluon emissions. No significant ridge signal is observed with either coordinates analyses. Near side jet correlations appear to be absent in the thrust axis analysis. The measurements are compared to predictions from various event generators and expected to provide new constraints to the phenomenological models in the low energy regime.

Measurements of branching fractions and CP-violating charge asymmetries in charmless $B$ decays reconstructed in 2019--2020 Belle~II data

We report on first measurements of branching fractions~($\mathcal{B}$) and CP-violating charge asymmetries~($\mathcal{A}$) in charmless $B$ decays at Belle~II. We use a sample of electron-positron collisions collected in 2019 and 2020 at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance and corresponding to $34.6$\,fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. We use simulation to determine optimized event selections. The $ΔE$ distributions of the resulting samples, restricted in $M_{\rm bc}$, are fit to determine signal yields. Signal yields are corrected for efficiencies determined from simulation and control data samples to obtain branching fractions and CP-violating asymmetries for flavour-specific channels. These are the first measurements in charmless decays reported by Belle~II. Results are compatible with known determinations and show detector performance comparable with the best Belle results offering a reliable basis to assess projections for future reach.

Rediscovery of $B \to ϕK^{(*)}$ decays and measurement of the longitudinal polarization fraction $f_L$ in $B \to ϕK^{*}$ decays using the Summer 2020 Belle II dataset

We utilize a sample of 34.6 fb$^{-1}$, collected by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric energy $e^+e^-$ collider, to search for the $B^+ \to ϕK^+$, $B^+ \to ϕK^{*+}$, $B^0 \to ϕK^0_S$, and $B^0 \to ϕK^{*0}$ decays. Charmless hadronic $B$ decays represent an important part of the Belle II physics program, and are an ideal benchmark to test the detector capabilities in terms of tracking efficiency, charged particle identification, vertexing, and advanced analysis techniques. Each channel is observed with a significance that exceeds 5 standard deviations, and we obtain measurements of their branching ratios that are in good agreement with the world averages. For the $B \to ϕK^*$ modes, we also perform a measurement of the longitudinal polarization fraction $f_L$.

Search for $B^0$ Decays to Invisible Final States ($+γ$) at Belle

We report searches for $B^0\to\rm{invisible}$ and $B^0\to\rm{invisible}+γ$ decays, where the energy of the photon is required to be larger than 0.5 GeV. These results are obtained from a $711\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ data sample that contains $772 \times 10^6 B\bar{B}$ pairs and was collected near the $Υ\,(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+ e^-$ collider. We observe no significant signal for either decay and set upper limits on their branching fractions at $90\%$ confidence level of $\mathcal{B}\,(B^0\to\rm{invisible}) < 7.8\times10^{-5}$ and $\mathcal{B}\,(B^0\to\rm{invisible}+γ) < 1.6\times10^{-5}$.

Search for an invisibly decaying $Z^{\prime}$ boson at Belle II in $e^+ e^- \to μ^+ μ^- (e^{\pm} μ^{\mp})$ plus missing energy final states

Theories beyond the standard model often predict the existence of an additional neutral boson, the $Z^{\prime}$. Using data collected by the Belle II experiment during 2018 at the SuperKEKB collider, we perform the first searches for the invisible decay of a $Z^{\prime}$ in the process $e^+ e^- \to μ^+ μ^- Z^{\prime}$ and of a lepton-flavor-violating $Z^{\prime}$ in $e^+ e^- \to e^{\pm} μ^{\mp} Z^{\prime}$. We do not find any excess of events and set 90\% credibility level upper limits on the cross sections of these processes. We translate the former, in the framework of an $L_μ-L_τ$ theory, into upper limits on the $Z^{\prime}$ coupling constant at the level of $5 \times 10^{-2}$ -- $1$ $M_{Z^\prime}\leq 6$ GeV/$c^2$.

Search for the Decay $B_s^0 \rightarrow η^\prime η$

In the Standard Model (SM) charmless hadronic decays $B_s^0 \rightarrow η^\prime η$ proceed via tree-level $b\to u$ and penguin $b\to s$ transitions. Penguin transitions are sensitive to Beyond-the-Standard-Model (BSM) physics scenarios and could affect the branching fractions and {\it CP} asymmetries in such decays. Once branching fractions for two-body decays $B_s \to ηη, ηη^{\prime}, η^{\prime}η^{\prime} $ are measured, and the theoretical uncertainties are reduced, it would be possible to extract {\it CP} violating parameters from the data using the formalism based on SU(3)/U(3) symmetry. To achieve this goal, at least four of these six branching fractions need to be measured. Only the branching fraction for $B_s^0 \to η^{\prime}η^{\prime}$ has been measured so far.

Studies of the semileptonic $\bar B^0\to D^{*+}\ell^-\barν_\ell$ and $B^-\to D^{0}\ell^-\barν_\ell$ decay processes with 34.6 fb$^{-1}$ of Belle II data

We report measurements of the $\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} \ell^{-} \barν_l$ and $B^- \to D^{0} \ell^{-} \barν_l$ processes using 34.6 fb$^{-1}$ of collision events recorded by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. For the $B^-\to D^{0}\ell^-\barν_\ell$ channel, we present first studies that isolate this decay from other semileptonic processes and backgrounds. We report a measurement of the $\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} \ell^{-} \barν_l$ branching fraction and obtain ${\cal B}(\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} \ell^{-} \barν_l) = \left(4.60 \pm 0.05_{\mathrm{stat}}\pm0.17_{\mathrm{syst}} \pm 0.45_{π_s}\right) \%$, in agreement with the world average. Here, the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and related to slow pion reconstruction, respectively. The systematic uncertainties are limited by the statistics of auxiliary measurements and will improve in the future. We also report differential branching fractions in five bins of the hadronic recoil parameter $w$ for $\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} \ell^{-} \barν_l$, unfolded to account for resolution and efficiency effects.

Measurement of $\mathcal{R}(D)$ and $\mathcal{R}(D^*)$ with a semileptonic tagging method

The experimental results on the ratios of branching fractions $\mathcal{R}(D) = {\cal B}(\bar{B} \to D τ^- \barν_τ)/{\cal B}(\bar{B} \to D \ell^- \barν_{\ell})$ and $\mathcal{R}(D^*) = {\cal B}(\bar{B} \to D^* τ^- \barν_τ)/{\cal B}(\bar{B} \to D^* \ell^- \barν_{\ell})$, where $\ell$ denotes an electron or a muon, show a long-standing discrepancy with the Standard Model predictions, and might hint to a violation of lepton flavor universality. We report a new simultaneous measurement of $\mathcal{R}(D)$ and $\mathcal{R}(D^*)$, based on a data sample containing $772 \times 10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ events recorded at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+ e^-$ collider. In this analysis the tag-side $B$ meson is reconstructed in a semileptonic decay mode and the signal-side $τ$ is reconstructed in a purely leptonic decay. The measured values are $\mathcal{R}(D)= 0.307 \pm 0.037 \pm 0.016$ and $\mathcal{R}(D^*) = 0.283 \pm 0.018 \pm 0.014$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions within $0.2$, $1.1$ and $0.8$ standard deviations for $\mathcal{R}(D)$, $\mathcal{R}(D^*)$ and their combination, respectively. This work constitutes the most precise measurements of $\mathcal{R}(D)$ and $\mathcal{R}(D^*)$ performed to date as well as the first result for $\mathcal{R}(D)$ based on a semileptonic tagging method.

Measurement of the integrated luminosity of the Phase 2 data of the Belle II experiment

From April to July 2018, a data sample at the peak energy of the $Υ(4S)$ resonance was collected with the Belle~II detector at the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider. This is the first data sample of the Belle~II experiment. Using Bhabha and digamma events, we measure the integrated luminosity of the data sample to be ($496.3 \pm 0.3 \pm 3.0$)~pb$^{-1}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. This work provides a basis for future luminosity measurements at Belle~II.

Using the data sample of 711 fb$^{-1}$ of $Υ(4S)$ on-resonance data taken by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy electron-positron collider, we present the first measurements of branching fractions of the decays $B^{-} \to \barΛ_{c}^{-} Ξ_{c}^{'0}$, $B^{-} \to \barΛ_{c}^{-} Ξ_{c}(2645)^{0}$, and $B^{-} \to \barΛ_{c}^{-} Ξ_{c}(2790)^{0} $. The signal yields for these decays are extracted from the recoil mass spectrum of the system recoiling against $\barΛ_{c}^{-}$ baryons in selected $B^-$ candidates. The branching fraction of $B^{-} \to \barΛ_{c}^{-} Ξ_{c}(2790)^{0}$ is measured to be $ (1.1 \pm 0.4 \pm 0.2)\times 10^{-3}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The 90\% credibility level upper limits on ${\cal B}(B^{-} \to \barΛ_{c}^{-} Ξ_{c}^{'0})$ and ${\cal B}(B^{-} \to \barΛ_{c}^{-} Ξ_{c}(2645)^{0})$ are determined to be $6.5\times 10^{-4}$ and $7.9\times 10^{-4}$, respectively.

Observation of the radiative decays of $Υ(1S)$ to $χ_{c1}$

We report the first observation of the radiative decay of the $Υ(1S)$ into a charmonium state. The statistical significance of the observed signal of $Υ(1S) \to γχ_{c1}$ is 6.3 standard deviations including systematics. The branching fraction is calculated to be Br($Υ(1S) \to γχ_{c1}$) = (4.7^{+2.4}_{-1.8} (stat) ^{+0.4}_{-0.5} (sys)) * 10^{-5}. We also searched for $Υ(1S)$ radiative decays into $χ_{c0,2}$ and $η_c(1S,2S)$ and set upper limits on their branching fractions. These results are obtained from a 24.9 fb^{-1} data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider at a center-of-mass energy equal to the $Υ(2S)$ mass using $Υ(1S)$ tagging by the $Υ(2S) \to Υ(1S) π^+π^-$ transitions.

Search for $B^+ \to μ^+\, ν_μ$ and $B^+ \to μ^+\, N$ with inclusive tagging

We report the result for a search for the leptonic decay of $B^+ \to μ^+ \, ν_μ$ using the full Belle data set of 711 fb${}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance. In the Standard Model leptonic $B$-meson decays are helicity and CKM suppressed. To maximize sensitivity an inclusive tagging approach is used to reconstruct the second $B$ meson produced in the collision. The directional information from this second $B$ meson is used to boost the observed $μ$ into the signal $B$ meson rest-frame, in which the $μ$ has a monochromatic momentum spectrum. Though its momentum is smeared by the experimental resolution, this technique improves the analysis sensitivity considerably. Analyzing the $μ$ momentum spectrum in this frame we find $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to μ^+ \, ν_μ) = \left( 5.3 \pm 2.0 \pm 0.9 \right) \times 10^{-7}$ with a one-sided significance of 2.8 standard deviations over the background-only hypothesis. This translates to a frequentist upper limit of $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to μ^+ \, ν_μ) < 8.6 \times 10^{-7}$ at 90% CL. The experimental spectrum is then used to search for a massive sterile neutrino, $B^+ \to μ^+ \, N$, but no evidence is observed for a sterile neutrino with a mass in a range of 0 - 1.5 GeV. The determined $B^+ \to μ^+ \, ν_μ$ branching fraction limit is further used to constrain the mass and coupling space of the type II and type III two-Higgs-doublet models.

Energy scan of the $e^+e^- \to h_b(nP)π^+π^-$ $(n=1,2)$ cross sections and evidence for $Υ(11020)$ decays into charged bottomonium-like states

Using data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider, we measure the energy dependence of the $e^+e^- \to h_b(nP)π^+π^-$ $(n=1,2)$ cross sections from thresholds up to $11.02\,$GeV. We find clear $Υ(10860)$ and $Υ(11020)$ peaks with little or no continuum contribution. We study the resonant substructure of the $Υ(11020) \to h_b(nP)π^+π^-$ transitions and find evidence that they proceed entirely via the intermediate isovector states $Z_b(10610)$ and $Z_b(10650)$. The relative fraction of these states is loosely constrained by the current data: the hypothesis that only $Z_b(10610)$ is produced is excluded at the level of 3.3 standard deviations, while the hypothesis that only $Z_b(10650)$ is produced is not excluded at a significant level.

The process $γγ\to p \bar{p} K^+ K^-$ and its intermediate processes are measured for the first time using a 980~fb$^{-1}$ data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. The production of $p \bar{p} K^+ K^-$ and a $Λ(1520)^0~(\barΛ(1520)^0)$ signal in the $pK^-$~($\bar{p} K^+$) invariant mass spectrum are clearly observed. However, no evidence for an exotic baryon near 1540~MeV/$c^2$, denoted as $Θ(1540)^0$~($\barΘ~(1540)^0$) or $Θ(1540)^{++}$~($Θ(1540)^{--}$), is seen in the $p K^-$~($\bar{p}K^+$) or $pK^+$~($\bar{p} K^-$) invariant mass spectra. Cross sections for $γγ\to p \bar{p} K^+ K^-$, $Λ(1520)^0 \bar{p} K^+ +c.c.$ and the products $σ(γγ\to Θ(1540)^0 \bar{p} K^+ +c.c.)\BR(Θ(1540)^0 \to p K^{-})$ and $σ(γγ\to Θ(1540)^{++} \bar{p} K^- +c.c.)\BR(Θ(1540)^{++}\to p K^{+})$ are measured. For the first time, $χ_{c2}$ production in exclusive $B$ decays in the modes $B^0 \to χ_{c2}π^- K^+$ and $B^+ \to χ_{c2} π^+ π^- K^+$ has been observed, along with first evidence for the $B^+ \to χ_{c2} π^+ K_S^0$ decay mode. Mass Measurements of Isolated Objects from Space-based Microlensing

We report on the mass and distance measurements of two single-lens events from the 2015 \emph{Spitzer} microlensing campaign. With both finite-source effect and microlens parallax measurements, we find that the lens of OGLE-2015-BLG-1268 is very likely a brown dwarf. Assuming that the source star lies behind the same amount of dust as the Bulge red clump, we find the lens is a $45\pm7$ $M_{\rm J}$ brown dwarf at $5.9\pm1.0$ kpc. The lens of of the second event, OGLE-2015-BLG-0763, is a $0.50\pm0.04$ $M_\odot$ star at $6.9\pm1.0$ kpc. We show that the probability to definitively measure the mass of isolated microlenses is dramatically increased once simultaneous ground- and space-based observations are conducted.

Measurement of the branching ratio of $\bar{B}^0 \rightarrow D^{*+} τ^- \barν_τ$ relative to $\bar{B}^0 \rightarrow D^{*+} \ell^- \barν_{\ell}$ decays with a semileptonic tagging method

We report a measurement of ratio ${\cal R}(D^*) = {\cal B}(\bar{B}^0 \rightarrow D^{*+} τ^- \barν_τ)/{\cal B}(\bar{B}^0 \rightarrow D^{*+} \ell^- \barν_{\ell})$, where $\ell$ denotes an electron or a muon. The results are based on a data sample containing $772\times10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs recorded at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+ e^-$ collider. We select a sample of $B^0 \bar{B}^0$ pairs by reconstructing both $B$ mesons in semileptonic decays to $D^{*\mp} \ell^{\pm}$. We measure ${\cal R}(D^*)= 0.302 \pm 0.030({\rm stat)} \pm 0.011({\rm syst)}$, which is within $1.6 σ$ of the Standard Model theoretical expectation, where $σ$ is the standard deviation including systematic uncertainties.

Measurement of the CKM angle $φ_1$ in $B^0\to\bar{D}{}^{(*)0}h^0$, $\bar{D}{}^0\to K_S^0π^+π^-$ decays with time-dependent binned Dalitz plot analysis

We report a measurement of the CP violation parameter $φ_1$ obtained in a time-dependent analysis of $B^0\to\bar{D}{}^{(*)0}h^0$ decays followed by $\bar{D}{}^0\to K_S^0π^+π^-$ decay. A model-independent measurement is performed using the binned Dalitz plot technique. The measured value is $φ_1 = 11.7^{\circ}\pm7.8^{\circ}({\rm stat.})\pm 2.1^{\circ}({\rm syst.})$. Treating $\sin{2φ_1}$ and $\cos{2φ_1}$ as independent parameters, we obtain $\sin{2φ_1} = 0.43\pm 0.27({\rm stat.})\pm 0.08({\rm syst.})$ and $\cos{2φ_1} = 1.06\pm 0.33({\rm stat.})^{+0.21}_{-0.15}({\rm syst.})$. The results are obtained with a full data sample of $772 \times 10^6 B\bar{B}$ pairs collected near the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider.

Measurement of the decay $B\to D\ellν_\ell$ in fully reconstructed events and determination of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{cb}|$

We present a determination of the magnitude of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{cb}|$ using the decay $B\to D\ellν_\ell$ ($\ell=e,μ$) based on 711 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-\to Υ(4S)$ data recorded by the Belle detector and containing $772 \times 10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs. One $B$ meson in the event is fully reconstructed in a hadronic decay mode while the other, on the signal side, is partially reconstructed from a charged lepton and either a $D^+$ or $D^0$ meson in a total of 23 hadronic decay modes. The isospin-averaged branching fraction of the decay $B\to D\ellν_\ell$ is found to be $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to D^- \ell^+ ν_{\ell})=(2.31\pm 0.03(\mathrm{stat})\pm 0.11(\mathrm{syst}))\%$. Analyzing the differential decay rate as a function of the hadronic recoil with the parameterization of Caprini, Lelouch and Neubert and using the form-factor prediction $\mathcal{G}(1)=1.0541\pm 0.0083$ calculated by FNAL/MILC, we obtain $η_\mathrm{EW}|V_{cb}|=(40.12\pm 1.34)\times 10^{-3}$, where $η_\mathrm{EW}$ is the electroweak correction factor. Alternatively, assuming the model-independent form-factor parameterization of Boyd, Grinstein and Lebed and using lattice QCD data from the FNAL/MILC and HPQCD collaborations, we find $η_\mathrm{EW}|V_{cb}|=(41.10 \pm 1.14)\times 10^{-3}$.

Measurement of the Lepton Forward-Backward Asymmetry in $B \rightarrow X_s \ell^+ \ell^-$ Decays with a Sum of Exclusive Modes

We report the first measurement of the lepton forward-backward asymmetry ${\cal A}_{\rm FB}$ as a function of the squared four-momentum of the dilepton system, $q^2$, for the electroweak penguin process $B \rightarrow X_s \ell^+ \ell^-$ with a sum of exclusive final states, where $\ell$ is an electron or a muon and $X_s$ is a hadronic recoil system with an $s$ quark. The results are based on a data sample containing $772\times10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs recorded at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+ e^-$ collider. ${\cal A}_{\rm FB}$ for the inclusive $B \rightarrow X_s \ell^+ \ell^-$ is extrapolated from the sum of 10 exclusive $X_s$ states whose invariant mass is less than 2 GeV/$c^2$. For $q^2 > 10.2$ GeV$^2$/$c^2$, ${\cal A}_{\rm FB} < 0$ is excluded at the 2.3$σ$ level, where $σ$ is the standard deviation. For $q^2 < 4.3$ GeV$^2$/$c^2$, the result is within 1.8$σ$ of the Standard Model theoretical expectation.

Observation of Transverse $Λ/\barΛ$ Hyperon Polarization in $e^+e^-$ Annihilation at Belle

We report the first observation of the polarization of $Λ/\barΛ$ hyperons transverse to its production plane in $e^+e^-$ annihilation. We observe a significant polarization that rises with the fractional energy carried by the hyperon as well as its transverse momentum. To define the production plane, we use the direction of the hyperon momentum together with either the thrust axis in the event or the momentum vector of a hadron in the opposite hemisphere. Furthermore, we investigate the contributions to the hyperon polarization from the feed-down from $Σ^0/\barΣ^0$ and $Λ_c^{\pm}$ decays. This measurement uses a dataset of 800.4fb$^{-1}$ collected by the Belle experiment at or near a center-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV.

OGLE-2012-BLG-0563Lb: a Saturn-mass Planet around an M Dwarf with the Mass Constrained by Subaru AO imaging

We report the discovery of a microlensing exoplanet OGLE-2012-BLG-0563Lb with the planet-star mass ratio ~1 x 10^{-3}. Intensive photometric observations of a high-magnification microlensing event allow us to detect a clear signal of the planet. Although no parallax signal is detected in the light curve, we instead succeed at detecting the flux from the host star in high-resolution JHK'-band images obtained by the Subaru/AO188 and IRCS instruments, allowing us to constrain the absolute physical parameters of the planetary system. With the help of a spectroscopic information about the source star obtained during the high-magnification state by Bensby et al., we find that the lens system is located at 1.3^{+0.6}_{-0.8} kpc from us, and consists of an M dwarf (0.34^{+0.12}_{-0.20} M_sun) orbited by a Saturn-mass planet (0.39^{+0.14}_{-0.23} M_Jup) at the projected separation of 0.74^{+0.26}_{-0.42} AU (close model) or 4.3^{+1.5}_{-2.5} AU (wide model). The probability of contamination in the host star's flux, which would reduce the masses by a factor of up to three, is estimated to be 17%. This possibility can be tested by future high-resolution imaging. We also estimate the (J-Ks) and (H-Ks) colors of the host star, which are marginally consistent with a low metallicity mid-to-early M dwarf, although further observations are required for the metallicity to be conclusive. This is the fifth sub-Jupiter-mass (0.2<m_p/M_Jup<1) microlensing planet around an M dwarf with the mass well constrained. The relatively rich harvest of sub-Jupiters around M dwarfs is contrasted with a possible paucity of ~1--2 Jupiter-mass planets around the same type of star, which can be explained by the planetary formation process in the core-accretion scheme.

Optical magnetic detection of single-neuron action potentials using quantum defects in diamond

A key challenge for neuroscience is noninvasive, label-free sensing of action potential (AP) dynamics in whole organisms with single-neuron resolution. Here, we present a new approach to this problem: using nitrogen-vacancy (NV) quantum defects in diamond to measure the time-dependent magnetic fields produced by single-neuron APs. Our technique has a unique combination of features: (i) it is noninvasive, as the light that probes the NV sensors stays within the biocompatible diamond chip and does not enter the organism, enabling activity monitoring over extended periods; (ii) it is label-free and should be widely applicable to most organisms; (iii) it provides high spatial and temporal resolution, allowing precise measurement of the AP waveforms and conduction velocities of individual neurons; (iv) it directly determines AP propagation direction through the inherent sensitivity of NVs to the associated AP magnetic field vector; (v) it is applicable to neurons located within optically opaque tissue or whole organisms, through which magnetic fields pass largely unperturbed; and (vi) it is easy-to-use, scalable, and can be integrated with existing techniques such as wide-field and superresolution imaging. We demonstrate our method using excised single neurons from two invertebrate species, marine worm and squid; and then by single-neuron AP magnetic sensing exterior to whole, live, opaque marine worms for extended periods with no adverse effect. The results lay the groundwork for real-time, noninvasive 3D magnetic mapping of functional neuronal networks, ultimately with synapse-scale (~10 nm) resolution and circuit-scale (~1 cm) field-of-view.

Spitzer Observations of OGLE-2015-BLG-1212 Reveal a New Path to Breaking Strong Microlens Degeneracies

Spitzer microlensing parallax observations of OGLE-2015-BLG-1212 decisively breaks a degeneracy between planetary and binary solutions that is somewhat ambiguous when only ground-based data are considered. Only eight viable models survive out of an initial set of 32 local minima in the parameter space. These models clearly indicate that the lens is a stellar binary system possibly located within the bulge of our Galaxy, ruling out the planetary alternative. We argue that several types of discrete degeneracies can be broken via such space-based parallax observations.

We report a measurement of the differential cross section of $π^0$ pair production in single-tag two-photon collisions, $γ^* γ\to π^0 π^0$, in $e^+ e^-$ scattering. The cross section is measured for $Q^2$ up to 30 GeV$^2$, where $Q^2$ is the negative of the invariant mass squared of the tagged photon, in the kinematic range 0.5 GeV < W < 2.1 GeV and $|\cos θ^*|$ < 1.0 for the total energy and pion scattering angle, respectively, in the $γ^* γ$ center-of-mass system. A Venus-Mass Planet Orbiting a Brown Dwarf: Missing Link between Planets and Moons

The co-planarity of solar-system planets led Kant to suggest that they formed from an accretion disk, and the discovery of hundreds of such disks around young stars as well as hundreds of co-planar planetary systems by the Kepler satellite demonstrate that this formation mechanism is extremely widespread. Many moons in the solar system, such as the Galilean moons of Jupiter, also formed out of the accretion disks that coalesced into the giant planets. We report here the discovery of an intermediate system OGLE-2013-BLG-0723LB/Bb composed of a Venus-mass planet orbiting a brown dwarf, which may be viewed either as a scaled down version of a planet plus star or as a scaled up version of a moon plus planet orbiting a star. The latter analogy can be further extended since they orbit in the potential of a larger, stellar body. For ice-rock companions formed in the outer parts of accretion disks, like Uranus and Callisto, the scaled masses and separations of the three types of systems are similar, leading us to suggest that formation processes of companions within accretion disks around stars, brown dwarfs, and planets are similar.

Constraint on Additional Planets in Planetary Systems Discovered through the Channel of High-magnification Gravitational Microlensing Events

High-magnification gravitational microlensing events provide an important channel of detecting planetary systems with multiple giants located at their birth places. In order to investigate the potential existence of additional planets, we reanalyze the light curves of the eight high-magnification microlensing events for each of which a single planet was previously detected. The analyzed events include OGLE-2005-BLG-071, OGLE-2005-BLG-169, MOA-2007-BLG-400, MOA-2008-BLG-310, MOA-2009-BLG-319, MOA-2009-BLG-387, MOA-2010-BLG-477, and MOA-2011-BLG-293. We find that including an additional planet improves fits with $Δχ^2 < 80$ for seven out of eight analyzed events. For MOA-2009-BLG-319, the improvement is relatively big with $Δχ^2 \sim 143$. From inspection of the fits, we find that the improvement of the fits is attributed to systematics in data. Although no clear evidence of additional planets is found, it is still possible to constrain the existence of additional planets in the parameter space. For this purpose, we construct exclusion diagrams showing the confidence levels excluding the existence of an additional planet as a function of its separation and mass ratio. We also present the exclusion ranges of additional planets with 90\% confidence level for Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus-mass planets.

Design and RF measurements of a 5 GHz 500 kW window for the ITER LHCD system

CEA/IRFM is conducting R\&D efforts in order to validate the critical RF components of the 5 GHz ITER LHCD system, which is expected to transmit 20 MW of RF power to the plasma. Two 5 GHz 500 kW BeO pill-box type window prototypes have been manufactured in 2012 by the PMB Company, in close collaboration with CEA/IRFM. Both windows have been validated at low power, showing good agreement between measured and modeling, with a return loss better than 32 dB and an insertion loss below 0.05 dB. This paper reports on the window RF design and the low power measurements. The high power tests up to 500kW have been carried out in March 2013 in collaboration with NFRI. Results of these tests are also reported. In the current ITER LHCD design, 20 MW Continuous Wave (CW) of Radio-Frequency power at 5 GHz are expected to be generated and transmitted to the plasma. In order to separate the vacuum vessel pressure from the cryostat waveguide pressure, forty eight 5 GHz 500kW CW windows are to be assembled on the waveguides at the equatorial port flange. For nuclear safety reasons, forty eight additional windows could be located in the cryostat section, to separate and monitor the cryostat waveguide pressure from the exterior transmission line pressure. These windows are identified as being one of the main critical components for the ITER LHCD system since first ITER LHCD studies [1] [2] [3] or more recently [4] [5] , and clearly require an important R\&D effort. In this context and even if the LHCD system is not part of the construction baseline, the CEA/IRFM is conducting a R\&D effort in order to validate a design and the performances of these RF windows. In order to begin the assessment of this need, two 5 GHz 500 kW/5 s pill-box type windows prototypes have been manufactured in 2012 by the PMB Company in close collaboration with the CEA/IRFM [6]. The section 2 of this paper reports the RF and mechanical design of a 5 GHz window. Some features of the mechanical design and the experimental RF measurements at low power are reported in section 3. High power results, made in collaboration with NFRI, are detailed in section 4. The development of CW windows is discussed in the conclusion. 2-RF AND MECHANICAL DESIGN The proposed 5 GHz RF window is based on a pill-box design [2] , i.e. a ceramic brazed in portion of a circular waveguide, connected on either side to a rectangular waveguide section. Typical design rules of thumb of such device are circular section diameter about the same size of the diagonal of the rectangular waveguide (cf. FIGURE 1). Without taking into account the ceramic, the circular section length is approximately half a guided wavelength of the circular TE 11 mode, in order for the device to act as a half-wave transformer. Once optimized, taking into account the ceramic, matching is correct only for a narrow band of frequency and is very sensitive to the device dimensions and the ceramic relative permittivity. The heat losses in the ceramic, which have to be extracted by an active water cooling, depends on the inside electric field topology and of ceramic dielectric loss (loss tangent). Undesirable modes due to parasitic resonances can be excited in the ceramic volume, raising the electric field and

Using a sample of $771.6 \times 10^{6}$ $Υ(4S)$ decays collected by the Belle experiment at the KEKB $e^+e^-$ collider, we observe for the first time the transition $Υ(4S) \to ηh_b(1P)$ with the branching fraction ${\cal B}[Υ(4S) \to ηh_b(1P)]= (2.18 \pm 0.11 \pm 0.18) \times 10^{-3}$ and we measure the $h_b(1P)$ mass $M_{h_{b}(1P)} = (9899.3 \pm 0.4 \pm 1.0)$ MeV/$c^{2}$, corresponding to the hyperfine splitting $ΔM_{\mathrm HF}(1P) = (0.6 \pm 0.4 \pm 1.0)$ MeV/$c^{2}$. Using the transition $h_b(1P) \to γη_b(1S)$, we measure the $η_b(1S)$ mass $M_{η_{b}(1S)} = (9400.7 \pm 1.7 \pm 1.6)$ MeV/$c^{2}$, corresponding to $ΔM_{\mathrm HF}(1S) = (59.6 \pm 1.7 \pm 1.6)$ MeV/$c^{2}$, the $η_b(1S)$ width $Γ_{η_{b}(1S)} = (8 ^{+6}_{-5} \pm 5)$ MeV/$c^{2}$ and the branching fraction ${\cal B}[h_b(1P) \to γη_b(1S)]= (56 \pm 8 \pm 4) \%$.

Inclusive cross sections for pairs of identified light charged hadrons and for single protons in $e^+e^-$ at $\sqrt{s}=$ 10.58 GeV

We report the first double differential cross sections of two charged pions and kaons ($e^+e^- \rightarrow hhX$) in electron-positron annihilation as a function of the fractional energies of the two hadrons for any charge and hadron combination. The dependence of these di-hadron cross sections on the topology (same, opposite-hemisphere or anywhere) is also studied with the help of the event shape variable thrust and its axis. The ratios of these di-hadron cross sections for different charges and hadron combinations directly shed light on the contributing fragmentation functions. For example, we find that the ratio of same-sign pion pairs over opposite-sign pion pairs drops toward higher fractional energies where disfavored fragmentation is expected to be suppressed. These di-hadron results are obtained from a $655\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ data sample collected near the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. Extending the previously published single-pion and single-kaon cross sections, single-proton ($e^+e^- \rightarrow pX$) cross sections are extracted from a $159\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ data sub-sample.

KMT-2015-1b: a Giant Planet Orbiting a Low-mass Dwarf Host Star Discovered by a New High-cadence Microlensing Survey with a Global Telescope Network

We report the discovery of an extrasolar planet, KMT-2015-1b, that was detected using the microlensing technique. The planetary lensing event was observed by KMTNet survey that has commenced in 2015. With dense coverage by using network of globally distributed telescopes equipped with very wide-field cameras, the short planetary signal is clearly detected and precisely characterized. We find that KMT-2015-1b is a giant planet orbiting a low-mass M-dwarf host star. The planet has a mass about twice that of Jupiter and it is located beyond the snow line of the host star. With the improvement of existing surveys and the advent of new surveys, future microlensing planet samples will include planets not only in greatly increased number but also in a wide spectrum of hosts and planets, helping us to have a better and comprehensive understanding about the formation and evolution of planets.

Measurement of $e^+e^- \to γχ_{cJ}$ via initial state radiation at Belle

The process $e^+e^- \to γχ_{cJ}$ ($J$=1, 2) is studied via initial state radiation using 980 fb$^{-1}$ of data at and around the $Υ(nS)$ ($n$=1, 2, 3, 4, 5) resonances collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. No significant signal is observed except from $ψ(2S)$ decays. Upper limits on the cross sections between $\sqrt{s}=3.80$ and $5.56~{\rm GeV}$ are determined at the 90% credibility level, which range from few pb to a few tens of pb. We also set upper limits on the decay rate of the vector charmonium [$ψ(4040$), $ψ(4160)$, and $ψ(4415)$] and charmoniumlike [$Y(4260)$, $Y(4360)$, and $Y(4660)$] states to $γχ_{cJ}$.

Measurement of Azimuthal Modulations in the Cross-Section of Di-Pion Pairs in Di-Jet Production from Electron-Positron Annihilation

We present an extraction of azimuthal correlations between two pairs of charged pions detected in opposite jets from electron-positron annihilation. These correlations may arise from the dependence of the di-pion fragmentation on the polarization of the parent quark in the process $e^+e^- \rightarrow q \bar{q}$. Due to the correlation of the quark polarizations, the cross-section of di-pion pair production, in which the pion pairs are detected in opposite jets in a dijet event, exhibits a modulation in the azimuthal angles of the planes containing the hadron pairs with respect to the production plane. The measurement of this modulation allows access to combinations of fragmentation functions that are sensitive to the quark's transverse polarization and helicity. Within our uncertainties we do not observe a significant signal from the previously unmeasured helicity dependent fragmentation function $G_1^\perp$. This measurement uses a dataset of 938~fb$^{-1}$ collected by the Belle experiment at or near $\sqrt{s}\approx10.58$ GeV.

Measurement of the amplitude ratio of $B^0 \to D^0K^{*0}$ and $B^0 \to \bar{D^0}K^{*0}$ decays with a model-independent Dalitz plot analysis using $D\to K_S^0π^+π^-$ decays

We report a measurement of the amplitude ratio $r_S$ of $B^0 \to D^0K^{*0}$ and $B^0 \to \bar{D^0}K^{*0}$ decays with a model-independent Dalitz plot analysis using $D\to K_S^0π^+π^-$ decays. Using the full data sample of $772\times10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at KEKB accelerator the upper limit is $r_S < 0.87$ at the 68 % confidence level. This result is the first measurement of $r_S$ with a model-independent Dalitz analysis, and is consistent with results from other analyses. The value of $r_S$ indicates the sensitivity of the decay to $ϕ_3$ because the statistical uncertainty is proportional to $1/r_S$. The $r_S$ result is obtained from observables ($x_\pm$, $y_\pm$) \begin{eqnarray} x_- &=& +0.4 ^{+1.0 +0.0}_{-0.6 -0.1} \pm0.0 \\ y_- &=& -0.6 ^{+0.8 +0.1}_{-1.0 -0.0} \pm0.1 \\ x_+ &=& +0.1 ^{+0.7 +0.0}_{-0.4 -0.1} \pm0.1 \\ y_+ &=& +0.3 ^{+0.5 +0.0}_{-0.8 -0.1} \pm0.1 \\ , \end{eqnarray} where $x_\pm = r_S \cos(δ_S \pm ϕ_3)$, $y_\pm = r_S \sin(δ_S \pm ϕ_3)$ and $ϕ_3 (δ_S)$ are the weak (strong) phase difference between $B^0 \to D^0K^{*0}$ and $B^0 \to \bar{D^0}K^{*0}$. The first uncertainty is statistical, the second is the experimental systematic and the third is the systematic due to the uncertainties on $c_i$ and $s_i$ parameters measured by CLEO.

We report a measurement of the branching fraction of B^+ -> tau^+ nu_tau decays using a data sample of 772 x 10^6 BBbar pairs, collected at the Y(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+e^- collider. We reconstruct the accompanying B meson in a semileptonic decay and detect the recoiling B candidate in the decay channel B^+ -> tau^+ nu_tau. We obtain a branching fraction of BR(B^+ -> tau^+ nu_tau) = [1.25 +- 0.28 (stat.) +- 0.27 (syst.)] x 10^-4. This result is in good agreement with previous measurements and the expectation from the calculation based on the Standard Model.

In addition, we report negative results from a search for hypothesized neutral ($Z^0$) and doubly charged ($Z^{++}$) isospin partners of the $D_{s0}^{*+}(2317)$ and provide upper limits on the product branching fractions ${\mathcal B}(B^0 \rightarrow D^0 z^0)\times{\mathcal B}(z^0\rightarrow D_s^{+}π^-)$ and ${\mathcal B}(B^+\rightarrow D^- z^{++})\times{\mathcal B}(z^{++}\rightarrow D_s^{+}π^+)$ that are more than an order of magnitude smaller than theoretical expectations for the hypotheses that the $D_{s0} ^{*+}(2317)$ is a member of an isospin triplet. Observation of the rare $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-$ decay from the combined analysis of CMS and LHCb data

A joint measurement is presented of the branching fractions $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-$ and $B^0\toμ^+μ^-$ in proton-proton collisions at the LHC by the CMS and LHCb experiments. The data samples were collected in 2011 at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, and in 2012 at 8 TeV. The combined analysis produces the first observation of the $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-$ decay, with a statistical significance exceeding six standard deviations, and the best measurement of its branching fraction so far. Furthermore, evidence for the $B^0\toμ^+μ^-$ decay is obtained with a statistical significance of three standard deviations. The branching fraction measurements are statistically compatible with SM predictions and impose stringent constraints on several theories beyond the SM.

OGLE-2011-BLG-0265Lb: a Jovian Microlensing Planet Orbiting an M Dwarf

We report the discovery of a Jupiter-mass planet orbiting an M-dwarf star that gave rise to the microlensing event OGLE-2011-BLG-0265. Such a system is very rare among known planetary systems and thus the discovery is important for theoretical studies of planetary formation and evolution. High-cadence temporal coverage of the planetary signal combined with extended observations throughout the event allows us to accurately model the observed light curve. The final microlensing solution remains, however, degenerate yielding two possible configurations of the planet and the host star. In the case of the preferred solution, the mass of the planet is $M_{\rm p} = 0.9\pm 0.3\ M_{\rm J}$, and the planet is orbiting a star with a mass $M = 0.22\pm 0.06\ M_\odot$. The second possible configuration (2$σ$ away) consists of a planet with $M_{\rm p}=0.6\pm 0.3\ M_{\rm J}$ and host star with $M=0.14\pm 0.06\ M_\odot$. The system is located in the Galactic disk 3 -- 4 kpc towards the Galactic bulge. In both cases, with an orbit size of 1.5 -- 2.0 AU, the planet is a "cold Jupiter" -- located well beyond the "snow line" of the host star. Currently available data make the secure selection of the correct solution difficult, but there are prospects for lifting the degeneracy with additional follow-up observations in the future, when the lens and source star separate.

OGLE-2013-BLG-0578L: Microlensing Binary Composed of A Brown Dwarf And An M Dwarf

Determining physical parameters of binary microlenses is hampered by the lack of information about the angular Einstein radius due to the difficulty of resolving caustic crossings. In this paper, we present the analysis of the binary microlensing event OGLE-2013-BLG-0578, for which the caustic exit was precisely predicted in advance from real-time analysis, enabling to densely resolve the caustic crossing and to measure the Einstein radius. From the mass measurement of the lens system based on the Einstein radius combined with the additional information about the lens parallax, we identify that the lens is a binary that is composed of a late-type M-dwarf primary and a substellar brown-dwarf companion. The event demonstrates the capability of current real-time microlensing modeling and the usefulness of microlensing in detecting and characterizing faint or dark objects in the Galaxy.

Quantifying electronic correlation strength in a complex oxide: a combined DMFT and ARPES study of LaNiO$_3$

The electronic correlation strength is a basic quantity that characterizes the physical properties of materials such as transition metal oxides. Determining correlation strengths requires both precise definitions and a careful comparison between experiment and theory. In this paper we define the correlation strength via the magnitude of the electron self-energy near the Fermi level. For the case of LaNiO$_3$, we obtain both the experimental and theoretical mass enhancements $m^\star/m$ by considering high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements and density functional + dynamical mean field theory (DFT + DMFT) calculations. We use valence-band photoemission data to constrain the free parameters in the theory, and demonstrate a quantitative agreement between the experiment and theory when both the realistic crystal structure and strong electronic correlations are taken into account. These results provide a benchmark for the accuracy of the DFT+DMFT theoretical approach, and can serve as a test case when considering other complex materials. By establishing the level of accuracy of the theory, this work also will enable better quantitative predictions when engineering new emergent properties in nickelate heterostructures.

Reanalyses of Anomalous Gravitational Microlensing Events in the OGLE-III Early Warning System Database with Combined Data

We reanalyze microlensing events in the published list of anomalous events that were observed from the OGLE lensing survey conducted during 2004-2008 period. In order to check the existence of possible degenerate solutions and extract extra information, we conduct analyses based on combined data from other survey and follow-up observation and consider higher-order effects. Among the analyzed events, we present analyses of 8 events for which either new solutions are identified or additional information is obtained. We find that the previous binary-source interpretations of 5 events are better interpreted by binary-lens models. These events include OGLE-2006-BLG-238, OGLE-2007-BLG-159, OGLE-2007-BLG-491, OGLE-2008-BLG-143, and OGLE-2008-BLG-210. With additional data covering caustic crossings, we detect finite-source effects for 6 events including OGLE-2006-BLG-215, OGLE-2006-BLG-238, OGLE-2006-BLG-450, OGLE-2008-BLG-143, OGLE-2008-BLG-210, and OGLE-2008-BLG-513. Among them, we are able to measure the Einstein radii of 3 events for which multi-band data are available. These events are OGLE-2006-BLG-238, OGLE-2008-BLG-210, and OGLE-2008-BLG-513. For OGLE-2008-BLG-143, we detect higher-order effect induced by the changes of the observer's position caused by the orbital motion of the Earth around the Sun. In addition, we present degenerate solutions resulting from the known close/wide or ecliptic degeneracy. Finally, we note that the masses of the binary companions of the lenses of OGLE-2006-BLG-450 and OGLE-2008-BLG-210 are in the brown-dwarf regime.

Red noise versus planetary interpretations in the microlensing event OGLE-2013-BLG-446

For all exoplanet candidates, the reliability of a claimed detection needs to be assessed through a careful study of systematic errors in the data to minimize the false positives rate. We present a method to investigate such systematics in microlensing datasets using the microlensing event OGLE-2013-BLG-0446 as a case study. The event was observed from multiple sites around the world and its high magnification (A_{max} \sim 3000) allowed us to investigate the effects of terrestrial and annual parallax. Real-time modeling of the event while it was still ongoing suggested the presence of an extremely low-mass companion (\sim 3M_\oplus ) to the lensing star, leading to substantial follow-up coverage of the light curve. We test and compare different models for the light curve and conclude that the data do not favour the planetary interpretation when systematic errors are taken into account.

Spitzer as Microlens Parallax Satellite: Mass and Distance Measurements of Binary Lens System OGLE-2014-BLG-1050L

We report the first mass and distance measurement of a caustic-crossing binary system OGLE-2014-BLG-1050L using the space-based microlens parallax method. \emph{Spitzer} captured the second caustic-crossing of the event, which occurred $\sim$10 days before that seen from Earth. Due to the coincidence that the source-lens relative motion was almost parallel to the direction of the binary-lens axis, the four-fold degeneracy, which was known before only to occur in single-lens events, persists in this case, leading to either a lower-mass (0.2 $M_\odot$ and 0.07 $M_\odot$) binary at $\sim$1.1 kpc or a higher-mass (0.9 $M_\odot$ and 0.35 $M_\odot$) binary at $\sim$3.5 kpc. However, the latter solution is strongly preferred for reasons including blending and lensing probability. OGLE-2014-BLG-1050L demonstrates the power of microlens parallax in probing stellar and substellar binaries.

Spitzer Microlens Measurement of a Massive Remnant in a Well-Separated Binary

We report the detection and mass measurement of a binary lens OGLE-2015-BLG-1285La,b, with the more massive component having $M_1>1.35\,M_\odot$ (80% probability). A main-sequence star in this mass range is ruled out by limits on blue light, meaning that a primary in this mass range must be a neutron star or black hole. The system has a projected separation $r_\perp= 6.1\pm 0.4\,{\rm AU}$ and lies in the Galactic bulge. These measurements are based on the "microlens parallax" effect, i.e., comparing the microlensing light curve as seen from $Spitzer$, which lay at $1.25\,{\rm AU}$ projected from Earth, to the light curves from four ground-based surveys, three in the optical and one in the near infrared. Future adaptive optics imaging of the companion by 30m class telescopes will yield a much more accurate measurement of the primary mass. This discovery both opens the path and defines the challenges to detecting and characterizing black holes and neutron stars in wide binaries, with either dark or luminous companions. In particular, we discuss lessons that can be applied to future $Spitzer$ and $Kepler$ K2 microlensing parallax observations.

Multiple survey and follow-up teams successfully combined their efforts within the framework of these protocols to detect this planet. A Terrestrial Planet in a ~1 AU Orbit Around One Member of a ~15 AU Binary

We detect a cold, terrestrial planet in a binary-star system using gravitational microlensing. The planet has low mass (2 Earth masses) and lies projected at $a_{\perp,ph}$ ~ 0.8 astronomical units (AU) from its host star, similar to the Earth-Sun distance. However, the planet temperature is much lower, T<60 Kelvin, because the host star is only 0.10--0.15 solar masses and therefore more than 400 times less luminous than the Sun. The host is itself orbiting a slightly more massive companion with projected separation $a_{\perp,ch}=$10--15 AU. Straightforward modification of current microlensing search strategies could increase their sensitivity to planets in binary systems. With more detections, such binary-star/planetary systems could place constraints on models of planet formation and evolution. This detection is consistent with such systems being very common.

Amplitude analysis of e+e- => Y(nS)pi+pi- at sqrt(s)=10.865 GeV

We report results on studies of the e+e- annihilation into three-body Y(nS)pi+pi- (n=1,2,3) final states including measurements of cross sections and the full amplitude analysis. The cross sections measured at sqrt(s)=10.865 GeV and corrected for the initial state radiation are sigma(e+e-=>Y(1S)pi+pi-)=(2.27+-0.12+-0.14) pb, sigma(e+e-=>Y(2S)pi+pi-)=(4.07+-0.16+-0.45) pb, and sigma(e+e-=>Y(3S)pi+pi-)=(1.46+-0.09+-0.16) pb. Amplitude analysis of the three-body Y(nS)pi+pi- final states strongly favors I^G(J^P)=1^+(1^+) quantum-number assignments for the two bottomonium-like Zb+- states, recently observed in the Y(nS)pi+- and hb(mP)pi+- (m=1,2) decay channels. The results are obtained with a $121.4 1/fb data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider.

Candidate Gravitational Microlensing Events for Future Direct Lens Imaging

The mass of the lenses giving rise to Galactic microlensing events can be constrained by measuring the relative lens-source proper motion and lens flux. The flux of the lens can be separated from that of the source, companions to the source, and unrelated nearby stars with high-resolution images taken when the lens and source are spatially resolved. For typical ground-based adaptive optics (AO) or space-based observations, this requires either inordinately long time baselines or high relative proper motions. We provide a list of microlensing events toward the Galactic Bulge with high relative lens-source proper motion that are therefore good candidates for constraining the lens mass with future high-resolution imaging. We investigate all events from 2004 -- 2013 that display detectable finite-source effects, a feature that allows us to measure the proper motion. In total, we present 20 events with mu >~ 8 mas/yr. Of these, 14 were culled from previous analyses while 6 are new, including OGLE-2004-BLG-368, MOA-2005-BLG-36, OGLE-2012-BLG-0211, OGLE-2012-BLG-0456, MOA-2012-BLG-532, and MOA-2013-BLG-029. In <~12 years the lens and source of each event will be sufficiently separated for ground-based telescopes with AO systems or space telescopes to resolve each component and further characterize the lens system. Furthermore, for the most recent events, comparison of the lens flux estimates from images taken immediately to those estimated from images taken when the lens and source are resolved can be used to empirically check the robustness of the single-epoch method currently being used to estimate lens masses for many events.

Efficient readout of a single spin state in diamond via spin-to-charge conversion

Efficient readout of individual electronic spins associated with atom-like impurities in the solid state is essential for applications in quantum information processing and quantum metrology. We demonstrate a new method for efficient spin readout of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond. The method is based on conversion of the electronic spin state of the NV to a charge state distribution, followed by single-shot readout of the charge state. Conversion is achieved through a spin-dependent photoionization process in diamond at room temperature. Using NVs in nanofabricated diamond beams, we demonstrate that the resulting spin readout noise is within a factor of three of the spin projection noise level. Applications of this technique for nanoscale magnetic sensing are discussed.

Evidence of $Υ(1S) \to J/ψ+χ_{c1}$ and search for double-charmonium production in $Υ(1S)$ and $Υ(2S)$ decays

Using data samples of $102\times10^6$ $Υ(1S)$ and $158\times10^6$ $Υ(2S)$ events collected with the Belle detector, a first experimental search has been made for double-charmonium production in the exclusive decays $Υ(1S,2S)\rightarrow J/ψ(ψ')+X$, where $X=η_c$, $χ_{cJ} (J=~0,~1,~2)$, $η_c(2S)$, $X(3940)$, and $X(4160)$. No significant signal is observed in the spectra of the mass recoiling against the reconstructed $J/ψ$ or $ψ'$ except for the evidence of $χ_{c1}$ production with a significance of $4.6σ$ for $Υ(1S)\rightarrow J/ψ+χ_{c1}$. The measured branching fraction $\BR(Υ(1S)\rightarrow J/ψ+χ_{c1})$ is $(3.90\pm1.21(\rm stat.)\pm0.23 (\rm syst.))\times10^{-6}$. The $90\%$ confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions of the other modes having a significance of less than $3σ$ are determined. These results are consistent with theoretical calculations using the nonrelativistic QCD factorization approach.

Measurement of ${D^{0}}$-${\overline{D}{}^{0}}$ Mixing and Search for Indirect $CP$ Violation Using ${D^0\to K_S^0π^+π^-}$ Decays

We report a measurement of ${D^{0}}$-${\overline{D}{}^{0}}$ mixing parameters and a search for indirect $CP$ violation through a time-dependent amplitude analysis of ${D^0\to K_S^0π^+π^-}$ decays. The results are based on 921~fb$^{-1}$ of data accumulated with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. Assuming $CP$ conservation, we measure the mixing parameters $x=(0.56\pm0.19^{+0.03}_{-0.09}{^{+0.06}_{-0.09}})\%$ and $y=(0.30\pm0.15^{+0.04}_{-0.05}{^{+0.03}_{-0.06})}\%$, where the errors are statistical, experimental systematic, and systematic due to the amplitude model, respectively. With $CP$ violation allowed, the parameters $|q/p|=0.90^{+0.16}_{-0.15}{^{+0.05}_{-0.04}}{^{+0.06}_{-0.05}}$ and $\arg(q/p)=(-6\pm11{\pm3}{^{+3}_{-4}})^{\circ}$ are found to be consistent with conservation of $CP$ symmetry in mixing and in the interference between mixing and decay, respectively.

Measurement of $B^0 \to D_s^- K^0_Sπ^+$ and $B^+ \to D_s^- K^+K^+$ branching fractions

We report a measurement of the $B^0$ and $B^+$ meson decays to the $D_s^-K^0_S π^+$ and $D_s^- K^+K^+$ final states, respectively, using $657 \times 10^{6} B\overline{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. Using the $D_s^-\to ϕπ^-$, $K^{*}(892)^0 K^-$ and $K^0_S K^-$ decay modes for the $D_s$ reconstruction, we measure the following branching fractions: ${\cal B}(B^0\to D_s^{-}K^0_Sπ^+)=[0.47 \pm 0.06 (\mathrm {stat}) \pm 0.05 (\mathrm {syst})]\times 10^{-4}$ and ${\cal B}(B^+\to D_s^-K^+K^+)= [0.93 \pm 0.22 (\mathrm {stat})\pm 0.10 (\mathrm {syst})]\times 10^{-5}$. We find the ratio of the branching fraction of $B^+\to D_s^-K^+K^+$ to that of the analogous Cabibbo favored $B^+\to D_s^-K^+π^+$ decay to be ${\cal R}_{\cal B} = 0.054 \pm 0.013 ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.006 ({\rm syst})$, which is consistent with the na\"ıve factorization model. We also observe a deviation from the three-body phase-space model for both studied decays.

Measurement of Branching Fractions and CP Asymmetries in B -> wK Decays and First Evidence of CP Violation in B0 -> wKS0

We present a measurement of the branching fractions and charge-parity-(CP-) violating parameters in B -> omega K decays. The results are obtained from the final data sample containing 772 x 10^(6) BBbar pairs collected at the Y(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. We obtain the branching fractions B(B0 -> omega K0) = (4.5 +/- 0.4 (stat) +/- 0.3 (syst)) x 10^(-6), B(B- -> omega K-) = (6.8 +/- 0.4 (stat) +/- 0.4 (syst)) x 10^(-6), which are in agreement with their respective current world averages. For the CP violating parameters, we obtain A(B0 -> omega KS) = -0.36 +/- 0.19 (stat) +/- 0.05 (syst), S(B0 -> omega KS) = +0.91 +/- 0.32 (stat) +/- 0.05 (syst), A(B- -> omega K-) = -0.03 +/- 0.04 (stat) +/- 0.01 syst), where A and S represent the direct and mixing-induced CP asymmetry, respectively. We find no evidence of CP violation in the decay channel B-->omega K-; however, we obtain the first evidence of CP violation in the B0 -> omega KS decay channel at the level of 3.1 standard deviations.

We report an observation of the $B^{\pm} \to J/ψηK^{\pm}$ and $B^0 \to J/ψηK^0_S$ decays using 772$\times 10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. We obtain the branching fractions ${\cal B}(B^{\pm}\rightarrow J/ψηK^{\pm})=(1.27\pm 0.11{\rm (stat.)\pm 0.11{\rm (syst.)})}\times10^{-4}$ and ${\cal B}(B^0\to J/ψηK^0_S)=(5.22 \pm 0.78 {\rm(stat.)} \pm 0.49{\rm(syst.)})\times10^{-5}$. We search for a new narrow charmonium(-like) state $X$ in the $J/ψη$ mass spectrum and find no significant excess. We set upper limits on the product of branching fractions, ${\cal B}(B^\pm \to XK^\pm){\cal B}(X \to J/ψη)$, at 3872 MeV$/c^2$ where a $C$-odd partner of X(3872) may exist, at $ψ(4040)$ and $ψ(4160)$ assuming their known mass and width, and over a range from 3.8 to 4.8 GeV$/c^2$. % at a 5 MeV$/c^2$ step. The obtained upper limits at 90% confidence level for $X^{C{\rm -odd}}(3872)$, $ψ(4040)$ and $ψ(4160)$ are 3.8$\times 10^{-6}$, 15.5$\times 10^{-6}$ and 7.4$\times 10^{-6}$, respectively.

Measurement of the inclusive semileptonic branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \rightarrow X^- \ell^+ ν_\ell)$ at Belle

We report a measurement of the inclusive semileptonic $B_s^0$ branching fraction in a $121~fb^{-1}$ data sample collected near the $Υ(5S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. The $B_s^0 \rightarrow X^- \ell^+ ν_\ell$ branching fraction is extracted from the ratio of the measured yields of $D_s^+$ mesons and $D_s^+ \ell^+$ pairs and the known production and branching fractions. The inclusive semileptonic branching fraction is measured to be $[9.6 \pm 0.4\text{(stat)} \pm 0.7\text{(syst)}]~\%$.

We report measurements of branching fractions of $τ$ lepton decays to final states with a $K^{0}_{S}$ meson using a 669 fb$^{-1}$ data sample accumulated with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. The inclusive branching fraction is measured to be $\mathcal{B}(τ^{-} \to K^{0}_{S}\ X^{-} ν_τ)=(9.15 \pm 0.01 \pm 0.15) \times 10^{-3}$, where $X^{-}$ can be anything; the exclusive branching fractions are $\mathcal{B}(τ^{-} \to π^{-} K^{0}_{S} ν_τ) = (4.16 \pm 0.01 \pm 0.08) \times 10^{-3}$, $\mathcal{B}(τ^{-} \to K^{-} K^{0}_{S} ν_τ) = (7.40 \pm 0.07 \pm 0.27) \times 10^{-4}$, $\mathcal{B}(τ^{-} \to π^{-} K^{0}_{S} π^{0} ν_τ) = (1.93 \pm 0.02 \pm 0.07) \times 10^{-3}$, $\mathcal{B}(τ^{-} \to K^{-} K^{0}_{S} π^{0} ν_τ) = (7.48 \pm 0.10 \pm 0.37)\times 10^{-4}$, $\mathcal{B}(τ^{-} \to π^{-} K^{0}_{S} K^{0}_{S} ν_τ) = (2.33 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.09) \times 10^{-4}$, $\mathcal{B}(τ^{-} \to π^{-} K^{0}_{S} K^{0}_{S} π^{0} ν_τ) = (2.00 \pm 0.22 \pm 0.20) \times 10^{-5}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. For each mode, the accuracy is improved over that of pre-$B$-factory measurements by a factor ranging from five to ten. In $τ^{-} \to π^{-} K^0_S K^0_S π^{0} ν_τ$ decays, clear signals for the intermediate states $τ^{-} \to π^- f_{1}(1285)ν_τ$ and $τ^{-} \to K^{*-}K^{0}_{S} π^{0} ν_τ$ are observed.

MOA-2013-BLG-220Lb: Massive Planetary Companion to Galactic-Disk Host

We report the discovery of MOA-2013-BLG-220Lb, which has a super-Jupiter mass ratio $q=3.01\pm 0.02\times 10^{-3}$ relative to its host. The proper motion, $μ=12.5\pm 1\, {\rm mas}\,{\rm yr}^{-1}$, is one of the highest for microlensing planets yet discovered, implying that it will be possible to separately resolve the host within $\sim 7$ years. Two separate lines of evidence imply that the planet and host are in the Galactic disk. OGLE-2012-BLG-0455/MOA-2012-BLG-206: Microlensing event with ambiguity in planetary interpretations caused by incomplete coverage of planetary signal

Characterizing a microlensing planet is done from modeling an observed lensing light curve. In this process, it is often confronted that solutions of different lensing parameters result in similar light curves, causing difficulties in uniquely interpreting the lens system, and thus understanding the causes of different types of degeneracy is important. In this work, we show that incomplete coverage of a planetary perturbation can result in degenerate solutions even for events where the planetary signal is detected with a high level of statistical significance. We demonstrate the degeneracy for an actually observed event OGLE-2012-BLG-0455/MOA-2012-BLG-206. The peak of this high-magnification event $(A_{\rm max}\sim400)$ exhibits very strong deviation from a point-lens model with $Δχ^{2}\gtrsim4000$ for data sets with a total number of measurement 6963. From detailed modeling of the light curve, we find that the deviation can be explained by four distinct solutions, i.e., two very different sets of solutions, each with a two-fold degeneracy. While the two-fold (so-called "close/wide") degeneracy is well-understood, the degeneracy between the radically different solutions is not previously known. The model light curves of this degeneracy differ substantially in the parts that were not covered by observation, indicating that the degeneracy is caused by the incomplete coverage of the perturbation. It is expected that the frequency of the degeneracy introduced in this work will be greatly reduced with the improvement of the current lensing survey and follow-up experiments and the advent of new surveys.

OGLE-2013-BLG-0102LA,B: Microlensing binary with components at star/brown-dwarf and brown-dwarf/planet boundaries

We present the analysis of the gravitational microlensing event OGLE-2013-BLG-0102. The light curve of the event is characterized by a strong short-term anomaly superposed on a smoothly varying lensing curve with a moderate magnification $A_{\rm max}\sim 1.5$. It is found that the event was produced by a binary lens with a mass ratio between the components of $q = 0.13$ and the anomaly was caused by the passage of the source trajectory over a caustic located away from the barycenter of the binary. From the analysis of the effects on the light curve due to the finite size of the source and the parallactic motion of the Earth, the physical parameters of the lens system are determined. The measured masses of the lens components are $M_{1} = 0.096 \pm 0.013~M_{\odot}$ and $M_{2} = 0.012 \pm 0.002~M_{\odot}$, which correspond to near the hydrogen-burning and deuterium-burning mass limits, respectively. The distance to the lens is $3.04 \pm 0.31~{\rm kpc}$ and the projected separation between the lens components is $0.80 \pm 0.08~{\rm AU}$.

Principal Component Analysis of Cavity Beam Position Monitor Signals

Model-independent analysis (MIA) methods are generally useful for analysing complex systems in which relationships between the observables are non-trivial and noise is present. Principle Component Analysis (PCA) is one of MIA methods allowing to isolate components in the input data graded to their contribution to the variability of the data. In this publication we show how the PCA can be applied to digitised signals obtained from a cavity beam position monitor (CBPM) system on the example of a 3-cavity test system installed at the Accelerator Test Facility 2 (ATF2) at KEK in Japan. We demonstrate that the PCA based method can be used to extract beam position information, and matches conventional techniques in terms of performance, while requiring considerably less settings and data for calibration.

Updated Cross Section Measurement of $e^+ e^- \to K^+ K^- J/ψ$ and $K_S^0K_S^0J/ψ$ via Initial State Radiation at Belle

The cross sections of the processes $e^+ e^- \to K^+ K^- J/ψ$ and $K_S^0K_S^0J/ψ$ are measured via initial state radiation at center-of-mass energies between the threshold and 6.0~GeV using a data sample of 980~fb$^{-1}$ collected with the Belle detector on or near the $Υ(nS)$ resonances, where $n=$1, 2, ..., 5. The cross sections for $e^+ e^- \to K^+ K^- J/ψ$ are at a few pb level and the average cross section for $e^+ e^- \to K_S^0K_S^0J/ψ$ is $1.8\pm 0.6 (\rm stat.)\pm 0.3 (\rm syst.)$~pb between 4.4 and 5.2~GeV. All of them are consistent with previously published results with improved precision. A search for resonant structures and associated intermediate states in the cross section of the process $e^+ e^- \to K^+ K^- J/ψ$ is performed.

A Giant Planet beyond the Snow Line in Microlensing Event OGLE-2011-BLG-0251

We present the analysis of the gravitational microlensing event OGLE-2011-BLG-0251. This anomalous event was observed by several survey and follow-up collaborations conducting microlensing observations towards the Galactic Bulge. Based on detailed modelling of the observed light curve, we find that the lens is composed of two masses with a mass ratio q=1.9 x 10^-3. Thanks to our detection of higher-order effects on the light curve due to the Earth's orbital motion and the finite size of source, we are able to measure the mass and distance to the lens unambiguously. We find that the lens is made up of a planet of mass 0.53 +- 0.21,M_Jup orbiting an M dwarf host star with a mass of 0.26 +- 0.11 M_Sun. The planetary system is located at a distance of 2.57 +- 0.61 kpc towards the Galactic Centre. The projected separation of the planet from its host star is d=1.408 +- 0.019, in units of the Einstein radius, which corresponds to 2.72 +- 0.75 AU in physical units. We also identified a competitive model with similar planet and host star masses, but with a smaller orbital radius of 1.50 +- 0.50 AU. The planet is therefore located beyond the snow line of its host star, which we estimate to be around 1-1.5 AU.

A Super-Jupiter orbiting a late-type star: A refined analysis of microlensing event OGLE-2012-BLG-0406

We present a detailed analysis of survey and follow-up observations of microlensing event OGLE-2012-BLG-0406 based on data obtained from 10 different observatories. Intensive coverage of the lightcurve, especially the perturbation part, allowed us to accurately measure the parallax effect and lens orbital motion. Combining our measurement of the lens parallax with the angular Einstein radius determined from finite-source effects, we estimate the physical parameters of the lens system. We find that the event was caused by a $2.73\pm 0.43\ M_{\rm J}$ planet orbiting a $0.44\pm 0.07\ M_{\odot}$ early M-type star. The distance to the lens is $4.97\pm 0.29$\ kpc and the projected separation between the host star and its planet at the time of the event is $3.45\pm 0.26$ AU. We find that the additional coverage provided by follow-up observations, especially during the planetary perturbation, leads to a more accurate determination of the physical parameters of the lens.

All-optical sensing of a single-molecule electron spin

We demonstrate an all-optical method for magnetic sensing of individual molecules in ambient conditions at room temperature. Our approach is based on shallow nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers near the surface of a diamond crystal, which we use to detect single paramagnetic molecules covalently attached to the diamond surface. The manipulation and readout of the NV centers is all-optical and provides a sensitive probe of the magnetic field fluctuations stemming from the dynamics of the electronic spins of the attached molecules. As a specific example, we demonstrate detection of a single paramagnetic molecule containing a gadolinium (Gd$^{3+}$) ion. We confirm single-molecule resolution using optical fluorescence and atomic force microscopy to co-localize one NV center and one Gd$^{3+}$-containing molecule. Possible applications include nanoscale and in vivo magnetic spectroscopy and imaging of individual molecules.

We perform a partial wave analysis to distinguish among scalar [$B^0 \to ϕ(Kπ)^{*}_{0}$], vector [$B^0 \to ϕK^{*}(892)^{0}$] and tensor [$B^0 \to ϕK^{*}_{2}(1430)^{0}$] components, and determine the corresponding branching fractions to be $\mathcal{B}[B^0 \to ϕ(Kπ)^{*}_{0}] = (4.3 \pm 0.4 \pm 0.4) \times 10^{-6}$, $\mathcal{B}[B^0 \to ϕK^{*}(892)^{0}] = (10.4 \pm 0.5 \pm 0.6) \times 10^{-6}$ and $\mathcal{B}[B^0 \to ϕK^{*}_{2}(1430)^{0}] = (5.5 ^{+0.9}_{-0.7} \pm 1.0) \times 10^{-6}$. We also measure the longitudinal polarization fraction $f_L$ in $B^0 \to ϕK^{*}(892)^{0}$ and $B^0 \to ϕK^{*}_{2}(1430)^{0}$ decays to be $0.499 \pm 0.030 \pm 0.018$ and $0.918 ^{+0.029}_{-0.060} \pm 0.012$, respectively. The first quoted uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. In total, we measure 26 parameters related to branching fractions, polarization and CP violation in the $B^0 \to ϕK^{*}$ system. No evidence for CP violation is found.

We also estimate the corresponding upper limit: $\mathcal{B}(B^-\to p\bar p\ell^-\barν_\ell) < 9.6\times 10^{-6}$ at the 90% confidence level. Gravitational Binary-lens Events with Prominent Effects of Lens Orbital Motion

Gravitational microlensing events produced by lenses composed of binary masses are important because they provide a major channel to determine physical parameters of lenses. In this work, we analyze the light curves of two binary-lens events OGLE-2006-BLG-277 and OGLE-2012-BLG-0031 for which the light curves exhibit strong deviations from standard models. From modeling considering various second-order effects, we find that the deviations are mostly explained by the effect of the lens orbital motion. We also find that lens parallax effects can mimic orbital effects to some extent. This implies that modeling light curves of binary-lens events not considering orbital effects can result in lens parallaxes that are substantially different from actual values and thus wrong determinations of physical lens parameters. This demonstrates the importance of routine consideration of orbital effects in interpreting light curves of binary-lens events. It is found that the lens of OGLE-2006-BLG-277 is a binary composed of a low-mass star and a brown dwarf companion.

High-statistics study of K^0_S pair production in two-photon collisions

We report a high-statistics measurement of the differential cross section of the process gamma gamma --> K^0_S K^0_S in the range 1.05 GeV <= W <= 4.00 GeV, where W is the center-of-mass energy of the colliding photons, using 972 fb^{-1} of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+ e^- collider operated at and near the Upsilon-resonance region. The differential cross section is fitted by parameterized S-, D_0-, D_2-, G_0- and G_2-wave amplitudes. In the D_2 wave, the f_2(1270), a_2(1320) and f_2'(1525) are dominant and a resonance, the f_2(2200), is also present. The f_0(1710) and possibly the f_0(2500) are seen in the S wave. The mass, total width and product of the two-photon partial decay width and decay branching fraction to the K bar{K} state Gamma_{gamma gamma}B(K bar{K}) are extracted for the f_2'(1525), f_0(1710), f_2(2200) and f_0(2500). The destructive interference between the f_2(1270) and a_2(1320) is confirmed by measuring their relative phase. The parameters of the charmonium states chi_{c0} and chi_{c2} are updated. Possible contributions from the chi_{c0}(2P) and chi_{c2}(2P) states are discussed. A new upper limit for the branching fraction of the P- and CP-violating decay channel eta_c --> K^0_S K^0_S is reported. The detailed behavior of the cross section is updated and compared with QCD-based calculations.

Interpretation of a Short-Term Anomaly in the Gravitational Microlensing Event MOA-2012-BLG-486

A planetary microlensing signal is generally characterized by a short-term perturbation to the standard single lensing light curve. A subset of binary-source events can produce perturbations that mimic planetary signals, thereby introducing an ambiguity between the planetary and binary-source interpretations. In this paper, we present analysis of the microlensing event MOA-2012-BLG-486, for which the light curve exhibits a short-lived perturbation. Routine modeling not considering data taken in different passbands yields a best-fit planetary model that is slightly preferred over the best-fit binary-source model. However, when allowed for a change in the color during the perturbation, we find that the binary-source model yields a significantly better fit and thus the degeneracy is clearly resolved. This event not only signifies the importance of considering various interpretations of short-term anomalies, but also demonstrates the importance of multi-band data for checking the possibility of false-positive planetary signals.

We set a 90% confidence-level upper limit for K^+- K^-+ at 2.0x10^{-7}; all other decays are observed with branching fractions ranging from 10^{-6} to 10^{-5}. In the $B^0/B^0-bar -> K^+-π^-+ mode, we confirm Belle's previously reported large A_{CP} with a value of -0.069 +- 0.014 +- 0.007 and a significance of 4.4 sigma. For all other flavor-specific modes, we find A_{CP} values consistent with zero, including A_{CP}(K^+- π^0) = +0.043 +- 0.024 +- 0.007 with 1.8 sigma significance. The difference of CP asymmetry between B^+- -> K^+- pi^0 and B^0/B^0-bar -> K^+-π^-+ is found to be Delta A_{K pi} equiv A_{CP} (K^+ pi^0) - A_{CP}(K^+ pi^-) = +0.112 +- 0.027 +- 0.007 with 4.0 sigma significance. Microlensing Discovery of a Population of Very Tight, Very Low-mass Binary Brown Dwarfs

Although many models have been proposed, the physical mechanisms responsible for the formation of low-mass brown dwarfs are poorly understood. The multiplicity properties and minimum mass of the brown-dwarf mass function provide critical empirical diagnostics of these mechanisms. We present the discovery via gravitational microlensing of two very low-mass, very tight binary systems. These binaries have directly and precisely measured total system masses of 0.025 Msun and 0.034 Msun, and projected separations of 0.31 AU and 0.19 AU, making them the lowest-mass and tightest field brown-dwarf binaries known. The discovery of a population of such binaries indicates that brown dwarf binaries can robustly form at least down to masses of ~0.02 Msun. Future microlensing surveys will measure a mass-selected sample of brown-dwarf binary systems, which can then be directly compared to similar samples of stellar binaries.

While there have been several detections of planetary-mass objects around brown dwarfs (2MASS 1207-3932 and 2MASS 0441-2301), these companions have relatively large mass ratios and projected separations, suggesting that they formed in a manner analogous to stellar binaries. We present the discovery of a planetary-mass object orbiting a field brown dwarf via gravitational microlensing, OGLE-2012-BLG-0358Lb. The system is a low secondary/primary mass ratio (0.080 +- 0.001), relatively tightly-separated (~0.87 AU) binary composed of a planetary-mass object with 1.9 +- 0.2 Jupiter masses orbiting a brown dwarf with a mass 0.022 M_Sun. The relatively small mass ratio and separation suggest that the companion may have formed in a protoplanetary disk around the brown dwarf host, in a manner analogous to planets.

MOA-2010-BLG-328Lb: a sub-Neptune orbiting very late M dwarf ?

We analyze the planetary microlensing event MOA-2010-BLG-328. The best fit yields host and planetary masses of Mh = 0.11+/-0.01 M_{sun} and Mp = 9.2+/-2.2M_Earth, corresponding to a very late M dwarf and sub-Neptune-mass planet, respectively. The system lies at DL = 0.81 +/- 0.10 kpc with projected separation r = 0.92 +/- 0.16 AU. Because of the host's a-priori-unlikely close distance, as well as the unusual nature of the system, we consider the possibility that the microlens parallax signal, which determines the host mass and distance, is actually due to xallarap (source orbital motion) that is being misinterpreted as parallax. We show a result that favors the parallax solution, even given its close host distance. We show that future high-resolution astrometric measurements could decisively resolve the remaining ambiguity of these solutions.

Nanometer scale quantum thermometry in a living cell

Sensitive probing of temperature variations on nanometer scales represents an outstanding challenge in many areas of modern science and technology. In particular, a thermometer capable of sub-degree temperature resolution as well as integration within a living system could provide a powerful new tool for many areas of biological research, including temperature-induced control of gene expression and cell-selective treatment of disease. Here, we demonstrate a new approach to nanoscale thermometry that utilizes coherent manipulation of the electronic spin associated with nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color centers in diamond. We show the ability to detect temperature variations down to 1.8 mK (sensitivity of 9 mK/sqrt(Hz)) in an ultra-pure bulk diamond sample. Using NV centers in diamond nanocrystals (nanodiamonds), we directly measure the local thermal environment at length scales down to 200 nm. Finally, by introducing both nanodiamonds and gold nanoparticles into a single human embryonic fibroblast, we demonstrate temperature-gradient control and mapping at the sub-cellular level, enabling unique potential applications in life sciences.

Precise measurement of the branching fractions for Bs->Ds(*)+ Ds(*)- and first measurement of the Ds*+ Ds*- polarization using e+e- collisions

We have made a precise measurement of the absolute branching fractions of Bs->Ds(*)+ Ds(*)- decays using 121.4 fb-1 of data recorded by the Belle experiment running on the Upsilon(5S) resonance. The results are B(Bs0->Ds+ Ds-) = (0.58 +0.11 -0.09 +-0.13)%, B(Bs0->Ds*+- Ds-+) = (1.8 +-0.2 +-0.4)%, and B(Bs0->Ds*+ Ds*-) = (2.0 +-0.3 +-0.5)%; the sum is B(Bs0->Ds(*)+ Ds(*)- = (4.3 +-0.4 +-1.0)%. Assuming Bs->Ds(*)+ Ds(*)- saturates decays to CP-even final states, the branching fraction constrains the ratio Delta(Gamma_s)/cos(phi_s), where Delta(Gamma_s) is the difference in widths between the two Bs0-Bs0bar mass eigenstates, and phi_s is the CP-violating phase in Bs0-Bs0bar mixing. For phi_s=0 we obtain Delta(Gamma_s)/Gamma_s = 0.090 +-0.009 (stat.) +-0.023 (syst.), where Gamma_s is the mean decay width. We also measure for the first time the longitudinal polarization fraction of Bs->Ds*+ Ds*-; the result is 0.12 +0.30 -0.28 +0.04 -0.05.

Precision measurement of charged pion and kaon differential cross sections in electron-positron annihilation at Q = 10.52 GeV

Measurements of inclusive differential cross sections for charged pion and kaon production in electron-positron annihilation have been carried out at a center-of-mass energy of Q = 10.52 GeV. The measurements were performed with the Belle detector at the KEKB electron-positron collider using a data sample containing 113 million e+e- -> qqbar events, where q={u,d,s,c}. We present charge-integrated differential cross sections dσ_h+-/dz for h+- = pi+-, K+- as a function of the relative hadron energy z = 2*E_h / sqrt{s} from 0.2 to 0.98. The combined statistical and systematic uncertainties for pi+- (K+-) are 4% (4%) at z ~ 0.6 and 15% (24%) at z ~ 0.9. The cross sections are the first measurements of the z-dependence of pion and kaon production for z > 0.7 as well as the first precision cross section measurements at a center-of-mass energy far below the Z^0 resonance used by the experiments at LEP and SLC.

Search for B -> h(*) nu nubar with the full Belle Y(4S) data sample

We report a search for the rare decays B -> h(*) nu nubar, where h(*) stands for K+, Ks0, K*+, K*0, pi+, pi0, rho+, rho0 and phi. The results are obtained from a 711 fb-1 data sample that contains 772 million BB pairs collected at the Y(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e- collider. We search for signal candidates by fully reconstructing a hadronic decay of the accompanying B meson and requiring a single h(*) meson left on the signal side. No significant signal is observed and we set upper limits on the branching fractions at 90% confidence level. The measurements of B+ -> K*+ nu nubar, B+ -> pi+ nu nubar, B0 -> pi0 nu nubar and B0 -> rho^0 nu nubar provide the world's currently most restrictive limits.

Search for Bottomonium States in Exclusive Radiative Upsilon(2S) Decays

We search for bottomonium states in Upsilon(2S)-> (bb-bar) gamma decays with an integrated luminosity of 24.7fb^-1 recorded at the Upsilon(2S) resonance with the Belle detector at KEK, containing (157.8+-3.6) X 10^6 Upsilon(2S) events. The (bb-bar) system is reconstructed in 26 exclusive hadronic final states composed of charged pions, kaons, protons, and K^0_S mesons. We find no evidence for the state recently observed around 9975 MeV (X_(bb-bar)) in an analysis based on a data sample of 9.3 X 10^6 Upsilon(2S) events collected with the CLEO III detector. We set a 90 % confidence-level upper limit on the branching fraction B[Upsilon(2S)-> X_(bb-bar) gamma] X \sum_i{B[X_(bb-bar)-> h_i]}< 4.9 X 10^-6, summed over the exclusive hadronic final states employed in our analysis. This result is an order of magnitude smaller than the measurement reported with CLEO data. We also set an upper limit for the eta_b(1S) state of B[Upsilon(2S)-> eta_b(1S) gamma] X \sum_i{B[eta_b(1S)-> h_i]}< 3.7 X 10^-6.

Study of $e^+ e^- \to π^+ π^- J/ψ$ and Observation of a Charged Charmonium-like State at Belle

The cross section for $e^+ e^- \to π^+ π^- J/ψ$ between 3.8 GeV and 5.5 GeV is measured with a 967 fb$^{-1}$ data sample collected by the Belle detector at or near the $Υ(nS)$ ($n = 1,\ 2,\ ...,\ 5$) resonances. The Y(4260) state is observed, and its resonance parameters are determined. In addition, an excess of $π^+ π^- J/ψ$ production around 4 GeV is observed. This feature can be described by a Breit-Wigner parameterization with properties that are consistent with the Y(4008) state that was previously reported by Belle. In a study of $Y(4260) \to π^+ π^- J/ψ$ decays, a structure is observed in the $M(π^\pm\jpsi)$ mass spectrum with $5.2σ$ significance, with mass $M=(3894.5\pm 6.6\pm 4.5) {\rm MeV}/c^2$ and width $Γ=(63\pm 24\pm 26)$ MeV/$c^{2}$, where the errors are statistical and systematic, respectively. This structure can be interpreted as a new charged charmonium-like state.

Study of Exclusive B->X_u l nu Decays and Extraction of |V_{ub}| using Full Reconstruction Tagging at the Belle Experiment

We report the results of a study of the exclusive semileptonic decays B->pi0lnu, B->pi+lnu, B->rho0lnu, B->rho+lnu and B->omegalnu, where l represents an electron or a muon. The events are tagged by fully reconstructing a second B meson in the event in a hadronic decay mode. The measured branching fractions are Br(B->pi0lnu) = (0.80 +- 0.08 +- 0.04)x10^-4, Br(B->pi+lnu) = (1.49 +- 0.09 +- 0.07)x10^-4, Br(B->rho0lnu) = (1.83 +- 0.10 +- 0.10)x10^-4, Br(B->rho+lnu) = (3.22 +- 0.27 +- 0.24)x10^-4, and Br(B->omegalnu) =(1.07 +- 0.16 +- 0.07)x10^-4, where the first error is statistical and the second one is systematic. The obtained branching fractions are inclusive of soft photon emission. We also determine the branching fractions as a function of the 4-momentum transfer squared to the leptonic system q^2=(p_l+p_nu)^2, where p_l and p_nu are the lepton and neutrino 4-momenta, respectively. Using the pion modes, a recent LCSR calculation, lattice QCD results and a model-independent description of the hadronic form factor, a value of the CKM matrix element |V_{ub}| = (3.52 +- 0.29)x10^-3 is extracted. For the first time, a charmless state with invariant mass greater than 1 GeV/c^2, which might be dominated by the decay B->f2lnu, is observed. These results are obtained from a 711 1/fb data sample that contains 772 millions BB pairs, collected near the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+ e^- collider.

Signals are observed for the first time in the $Υ(1S) \to ϕK^+ K^-$, $ωπ^+ π^-$, $K^{\ast 0} K^- π^+$, $K^{\ast0} K_2^{\ast 0}$ and $Υ(2S) \to ϕK^+ K^-$, $K^{\ast 0} K^- π^+$ decay modes. Branching fractions are determined for all the processes, while 90% confidence level upper limits are established on the branching fractions for the modes with a statistical significance less than $3σ$. First study of η_c, η(1760) and X(1835) production via η'π^+π^- final states in two-photon collisions

The invariant mass spectrum of the η' π^+ π^- final state produced in two-photon collisions is obtained using a 673 fb^{-1} data sample collected in the vicinity of the Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+e^- collider. We observe a clear signal of the η_c and measure its mass and width to be M(η_c)=(2982.7 +- 1.8(stat) +- 2.2(syst) +- 0.3(model)) MeV/c^2 and Γ(η_c) = (37.8^{+5.8}_{-5.3}(stat) +- 2.8(syst) +- 1.4(model)) MeV/c^2. The third error is an uncertainty due to possible interference between the η_c and a non-resonant component. We also report the first evidence for η(1760) decay to η' π^+ π^-; we find two solutions for its parameters, depending on the inclusion or not of the X(1835), whose existence is of marginal significance in our data. From a fit to the mass spectrum using coherent X(1835) and η(1760) resonant amplitudes, we set a 90% confidence level upper limit on the product Γ_{γγ} \BR (η' π^+ π^-) for the X(1835).

Magnetic field imaging with NV ensembles

We demonstrate a method of imaging spatially varying magnetic fields using a thin layer of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers at the surface of a diamond chip. Fluorescence emitted by the two-dimensional NV ensemble is detected by a CCD array, from which a vector magnetic field pattern is reconstructed. As a demonstration, AC current is passed through wires placed on the diamond chip surface, and the resulting AC magnetic field patterns are imaged using an echo-based technique with sub-micron resolution over a 140 μm x 140 μm field of view, giving single-pixel sensitivity ~100 nT/\sqrt{Hz}. We discuss ongoing efforts to further improve sensitivity and potential bioimaging applications such as real-time imaging of activity in functional, cultured networks of neurons.

Measurement of the CP-violation Parameter sin2$ϕ_1$ with a New Tagging Method at the $Υ(5S)$ Resonance

We report a measurement of the CP-violation parameter sin2$ϕ_1$ at the $Υ(5S)$ resonance using a new tagging method, called "$B$-$π$ tagging." In $Υ(5S)$ decays containing a neutral $B$ meson, a charged $B$, and a charged pion, the neutral $B$ is reconstructed in the $J/ψK_S^0$ CP-eigenstate decay channel. The initial flavor of the neutral $B$ meson at the moment of the $Υ(5S)$ decay is opposite to that of the charged $B$ and may thus be inferred from the charge of the pion without reconstructing the charged $B$. From the asymmetry between $B$-$π^+$ and $B$-$π^-$ tagged $J/ψK_S^0$ yields, we determine sin2$ϕ_1$ = 0.57 $\pm$ 0.58(stat) $\pm$ 0.06(syst). The results are based on 121 fb$^{-1}$ of data recorded by the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+ e^-$ collider.

Mechanical and Electronic Properties of Ferromagnetic GaMnAs Using Ultrafast Coherent Acoustic Phonons

Ultrafast two-color pump-probe measurements, involving coherent acoustic phonon (CAP) waves, have provided information simultaneously on the mechanical properties and on the electronic structure of ferromagnetic GaMnAs. Both C11 and Vs of GaMnAs are found to increase with temperature (78 K<T<295 K), again in contrast to the opposite behavior in GaAs. Microlensig Binaries with Candidate Brown Dwarf Companions

Brown dwarfs are important objects because they may provide a missing link between stars and planets, two populations that have dramatically different formation history. In this paper, we present the candidate binaries with brown dwarf companions that are found by analyzing binary microlensing events discovered during 2004 - 2011 observation seasons. Based on the low mass ratio criterion of q < 0.2, we found 7 candidate events, including OGLE-2004-BLG-035, OGLE-2004-BLG-039, OGLE-2007-BLG-006, OGLE-2007-BLG-399/MOA-2007-BLG-334, MOA-2011-BLG-104/OGLE-2011-BLG-0172, MOA-2011-BLG-149, and MOA-201-BLG-278/OGLE-2011-BLG-012N. Among them, we are able to confirm that the companions of the lenses of MOA-2011-BLG-104/OGLE-2011-BLG-0172 and MOA-2011-BLG-149 are brown dwarfs by determining the mass of the lens based on the simultaneous measurement of the Einstein radius and the lens parallax. The measured mass of the brown dwarf companions are (0.02 +/- 0.01) M_Sun and (0.019 +/- 0.002) M_Sun for MOA-2011-BLG-104/OGLE-2011-BLG-0172 and MOA-2011-BLG-149, respectively, and both companions are orbiting low mass M dwarf host stars. More microlensing brown dwarfs are expected to be detected as the number of lensing events with well covered light curves increases with new generation searches.

Observation of ψ(4040) and ψ(4160) decay into ηJ/ψ

The cross section for e^+e^- \to ηJ/ψbetween \sqrt{s}=3.8 GeV/c^2 and 5.3 GeV/c^2 is measured via initial state radiation using 980 fb^{-1} of data on and around the Υ(nS)(n=1,2,3,4,5) resonances collected with the Belle detector at KEKB. Two resonant structures at the ψ(4040) and ψ(4160) are observed in the ηJ/ψinvariant mass distribution. Fitting the mass spectrum with the coherent sum of two Breit-Wigner functions, one obtains BR(ψ(4040)\toηJ/ψ)\cdotΓ_{ee}^{ψ(4040)} = (4.8\pm0.9\pm1.4) eV and BR(ψ(4160)\toηJ/ψ)\cdotΓ_{ee}^{ψ(4160)} = (4.0\pm0.8\pm1.4) eV for one solution and BR(ψ(4040)\toηJ/ψ)\cdotΓ_{ee}^{ψ(4040)} = (11.2\pm1.3\pm1.9) eV and BR(ψ(4160)\toηJ/ψ)\cdotΓ_{ee}^{ψ(4160)} = (13.8\pm1.3\pm2.0) eV for the other solution, where the first errors are statistical and the second are systematic. This is the first measurement of this hadronic transition mode of these two states, and the partial widths to ηJ/ψare found to be about 1 MeV. There is no evidence for the Y(4260), Y(4360), ψ(4415), or Y(4660) in the ηJ/ψfinal state, and upper limits of their production rates in e^+e^- annihilation are determined.

We also report results on the amplitude analysis of the three-body Y(10860)=>Y(nS)pi+pi-, n=1,2,3 decays and the analysis of the internal structure of the three-body Y(10860)=>hb(mP)pi+pi-, m=1,2 decays. The results are based on a 121.4 1/fb data sample collected with the Belle detector at a center-of-mass energy near the Y(10860).

The second multiple-planet system discovered by microlensing: OGLE-2012-BLG-0026Lb, c, a pair of jovian planets beyond the snow line

We report the discovery of a planetary system from observation of the high-magnification microlensing event OGLE-2012-BLG-0026. The lensing light curve exhibits a complex central perturbation with multiple features. We find that the perturbation was produced by two planets located near the Einstein ring of the planet host star. We identify 4 possible solutions resulting from the well-known close/wide degeneracy. By measuring both the lens parallax and the Einstein radius, we estimate the physical parameters of the planetary system. According to the best-fit model, the two planet masses are ~0.11 M_Jupiter and 0.68 M_Jupiter and they are orbiting a G-type main sequence star with a mass ~0.82 M_Sun. The projected separations of the individual planets are beyond the snow line in all four solutions, being ~3.8 AU and 4.6 AU in the best-fit solution. The deprojected separations are both individually larger and possibly reversed in order. This is the second multi-planet system with both planets beyond the snow line discovered by microlensing. This is the only such a system (other than the Solar System) with measured planet masses without sin(i) degeneracy. The planetary system is located at a distance 4.1 kpc from the Earth toward the Galactic center. It is very likely that extra light from stars other than the lensed star comes from the lens itself. If this is correct, it will be possible to obtain detailed information about the planet-host star from follow-up observation.

Gate-activated photoresponse in a graphene p-n junction

We study photodetection in graphene near a local electrostatic gate, which enables active control of the potential landscape and carrier polarity. We find that a strong photoresponse only appears when and where a p-n junction is formed, allowing on-off control of photodetection. Photocurrents generated near p-n junctions do not require biasing and can be realized using submicron gates. Locally modulated photoresponse enables a new range of applications for graphene-based photodetectors including, for example, pixilated infrared imaging with control of response on subwavelength dimensions.

Measurement of the decay $B^0\toπ^-\ell^+ν$ and determination of $|V_{ub}|$

We present a measurement of the charmless semileptonic decay $B^0\toπ^-\ell^+ν$ using a data sample containing 657$\times 10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ events collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider operating near the $Υ(4S)$ resonance. We determine the total branching fraction of the decay, $\mathcal{B}(B^0\toπ^-\ell^+ν)=(1.49\pm 0.04{(\mathrm{stat})}\pm 0.07{(\mathrm{syst})})\times 10^{-4}$. We also report a new precise measurement of the differential decay rate, and extract the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{ub}|$ using model-independent and -dependent approaches. From a simultaneous fit to the measured differential decay rate and lattice QCD results, we obtain $|V_{ub}|=(3.43\pm 0.33)\times 10^{-3}$, where the error includes both statistical and systematic uncertainties.

Observation of B- to pbar Lambda D0 at Belle

We study B- meson decays to pbar Lambda D(*)0 final states using a sample of 657 * 10^6 B Bbar events collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+ e- collider. The observed branching fraction for B- to pbar Lambda D0 is (1.43^ +0.28_-0.25 +- 0.18)*10^-5. with a significance of 8.1 standard deviations, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. Most of the signal events have the pbarLambda mass peaking near threshold. No significant signal is observed for B- to pbar Lambda D*0 and the corresponding upper limit on the branching fraction is 4.8 * 10^-5 at the 90% confidence level.

Observation of transverse polarization asymmetries of charged pion pairs in e+e- annihilation near sqrt s=10.58 GeV

The interference fragmentation function translates the fragmentation of a quark with a transverse projection of the spin into an azimuthal asymmetry of two final-state hadrons. In e+e- annihilation the product of two interference fragmentation functions is measured. We report nonzero asymmetries for pairs of charge-ordered pi+pi- pairs, which indicate a significant interference fragmentation function in this channel. The results are obtained from a 672 fb-1 data sample that contains 711 \times 106 pi+pi- pairs and was collected at and near the ?(4S) resonance, with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider.

Search for CP violation in tau -> K^0_S pi nu_tau decays at Belle

We report on a search for CP violation in tau -> K^0_S pi nu_tau decays using a data sample of 699 fb^{-1} collected in the Belle experiment at the KEKB electron-positron asymmetric-energy collider. The CP asymmetry is measured in four bins of the invariant mass of the K^0_S pi system and found to be compatible with zero with a precision of O(10^{-3}) in each mass bin. Limits for the CP violation parameter Im(eta_S) are given at a 90 % confidence level. These limits are |Im(eta_S)|<0.026 or better, depending on the parameterization used to describe the hadronic form factors and improve upon previous limits by one order of magnitude.

Belle II Technical Design Report

The Belle detector at the KEKB electron-positron collider has collected almost 1 billion Y(4S) events in its decade of operation. Super-KEKB, an upgrade of KEKB is under construction, to increase the luminosity by two orders of magnitude during a three-year shutdown, with an ultimate goal of 8E35 /cm^2 /s luminosity. To exploit the increased luminosity, an upgrade of the Belle detector has been proposed. A new international collaboration Belle-II, is being formed. The Technical Design Report presents physics motivation, basic methods of the accelerator upgrade, as well as key improvements of the detector.

Diameter Dependence of the Transport Properties of Antimony Telluride Nanowires

We report measurements of electronic, thermoelectric, and galvanomagnetic properties of individual single crystal antimony telluride (Sb2Te3) nanowires with diameters in the range of 20-100 nm. Temperature dependent resistivity and thermoelectric power (TEP) measurements indicate hole dominant diffusive thermoelectric generation, with an enhancement of the TEP for smaller diameter wires up to 110 uV/K at T = 300 K. We measure the magnetoresistance, in magnetic fields both parallel and perpendicular to the nanowire [110] axis, where strong anisotropic positive magnetoresistance behavior was observed.

Energy cross-calibration from the first CREAM flight: transition radiation detector versus calorimeter

The Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass (CREAM) balloon experiment had two successful flights in 2004/05 and 2005/06. It was designed to perform energy measurements from a few GeV up to 1000 TeV, taking advantage of different detection techniques. The first instrument, CREAM-1, combined a transition radiation detector with a calorimeter to provide independent energy measurements of cosmicraynuclei. Each detector was calibrated with particle beams in a limited range of energies. In order to assess the absolute energy scale of the instrument and to investigate the systematic effects of each technique, a cross-calibration was performed by comparing the two independent energy estimates on selected samples of oxygen and carbon nuclei.

First Measurement of Inclusive B -> X_s eta Decays

We report a first measurement of inclusive B -> X_s eta decays, where X_s is a charmless state with unit strangeness. The measurement is based on a pseudo-inclusive reconstruction technique and uses a sample of 657 x 10^6 BB-bar pairs accumulated with the Belle detector at the KEKB e^+e^- collider. For M_{X_s} < 2.6 GeV/c^2, we measure a branching fraction of (26.1 +/- 3.0 (stat) +1.9 -2.1 (syst) +4.0 -7.1 (model)) x 10^-5 and a direct CP asymmetry of A_{CP} = -0.13 +/- 0.04 +0.02 -0.03. Over half of the signal occurs in the range M_{X_s} > 1.8 GeV/c^2.

Measurement of CP violating asymmetries in B^0 -> K^+K^- K^0_S decays with a time-dependent Dalitz approach

We report a measurement of $CP$ violating asymmetries in $B^0(\overline{B}^0) \to K^+ K^- K^0_S$ decays with a time-dependent Dalitz approach. This analysis is based on a data sample of $657\times 10^6$ $B\overline{B}$ pairs accumulated at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. As the result of an unbinned maximum likelihood fit to the selected candidates, the mixing-induced and direct $CP$ violation parameters, $ϕ^{\rm eff}_1$ and ${\cal A}_{CP}$ are obtained for $B^0 \to ϕ(1020) K^0_S$, $B^0 \to f_0(980) K^0_S$ and other $B^0 \to K^+ K^- K^0_S$ decays. We find four solutions that describe the data. There are \{eqnarray*} ϕ_1^{\rm eff}(B^0\to ϕ(1020) K^0_S) & = & (32.2 \pm 9.0 \pm 2.6 \pm 1.4)^{\circ}; ϕ_1^{\rm eff}(B^0\to ϕ(1020) K^0_S) & = & (26.2 \pm 8.8 \pm 2.7 \pm 1.2)^{\circ};\\ ϕ_1^{\rm eff}(B^0\to ϕ(1020) K^0_S) & = & (27.3 \pm 8.6 \pm 2.8 \pm 1.3)^{\circ}\; {\rm and}\\ ϕ_1^{\rm eff}(B^0\to ϕ(1020) K^0_S) & = & (24.3 \pm 8.0 \pm 2.9 \pm 5.2)^{\circ}.{eqnarray*}\ The values for the $CP$ violating phase in $B^0\to ϕ(1020) K^0_S$ are similar but other properties of the Dalitz plot are quite different for the four solutions. These four solutions have consistent $ϕ^{\rm eff}_1$ values for all three $B$ meson decay channels and none of them deviates significantly from the values measured in $B \to (c\bar{c}) K^0$ decays with the currently available statistics. In addition, we find no significant direct $CP$ violation.

Observation of Bs->Ds(*)+Ds(*)- using e+e- collisions and a determination of the Bs-Bsbar width difference ΔΓ_s

We have made the first observation of Bs->Ds(*)+Ds(*)- decays using 23.6 fb-1 of data recorded by the Belle experiment running on the Upsilon(5S) resonance. The branching fractions are measured to be B(B^0_s\ra D^+_s D^-_s) = (1.0\,^{+0.4}_{-0.3}\,^{+0.3}_{-0.2})%, B(B^0_s\ra D^{*\pm}_s D^{\mp}_s) = (2.8\,^{+0.8}_{-0.7}\,\pm 0.7)%, and B(B^0_s\ra D^{*+}_s D^{*-}_s) = (3.1\,^{+1.2}_{-1.0}\,\pm 0.8)%; the sum is B(B^0_s\ra D^{(*)+}_s D^{(*)-}_s) = (6.9\,^{+1.5}_{-1.3}\,\pm 1.9)%. Assuming Bs->Ds(*)+Ds(*)- saturates decays to CP-even final states, the branching fraction determines the ratio ΔΓ_s/cos(ϕ), where ΔΓ_s is the difference in widths between the two Bs-Bsbar mass eigenstates, and ϕis a CP-violating weak phase. Taking CP violation to be negligibly small, we obtain ΔΓ_s/Γ_s = 0.147^{+0.036}_{-0.030}(stat.)^{+0.044}_{-0.042}(syst.), where Γ_s is the mean decay width.

Performance of the CREAM calorimeter in accelerator beam test

The CREAM calorimeter, designed to measure the spectra of cosmic-ray nuclei from under 1 TeV to 1000 TeV, is a 20 radiation length (X0) deep sampling calorimeter. The calorimeter is comprised of 20 layers of tungsten interleaved with 20 layers of scintillating fiber ribbons, and is preceded by a pair of graphite interaction targets providing about 0.42 proton interaction lengths (λint). The calorimeter was placed in one of CERN's SPS accelerator beams for calibration and testing. Beams of 150 GeV electrons were used for calibration, and a variety of electron, proton, and nuclear fragment beams were used to test the simulation model of the detector. In this paper we discuss the performance of the calorimeter in the electron beam and compare electron beam data with simulation results.

Trapping and manipulation of isolated atoms using nanoscale plasmonic structures

We propose and analyze a scheme to interface individual neutral atoms with nanoscale solid-state systems. The interface is enabled by optically trapping the atom via the strong near-field generated by a sharp metallic nanotip. We show that under realistic conditions, a neutral atom can be trapped with position uncertainties of just a few nanometers, and within tens of nanometers of other surfaces. Simultaneously, the guided surface plasmon modes of the nanotip allow the atom to be optically manipulated, or for fluorescence photons to be collected, with very high efficiency. Finally, we analyze the surface forces and heating and decoherence rates acting on the trapped atom.

Exclusive Measurement of the Nonmesonic Weak Decay of ^{5}_ΛHe Hypernucleus

We performed a coincidence measurement of two nucleons emitted from the nonmesonic weak decay (NMWD) of ^{5}_ΛHe formed via the ^{6}Li(π^+,K^+) reaction. The energies of two nucleons and the pair number distributions in the opening angle between them were measured. In both np and nn pairs, we observed a clean back-to-back correlation coming from the two-body decay of Λp --> n p and Λn --> n n, respectively. The ratio of the nucleon pair numbers was N_{nn}/N_{np}=0.45 \pm 0.11(stat)\pm 0.03(syst) in the kinematic region of cos(theta_{NN}) < -0.8. Since each decay mode was exclusively detected, the measured ratio should be close to the ratio of Γ(Λp --> np)/Γ(Λn --> nn). The ratio is consistent with recent theoretical calculations based on the heavy meson/direct quark exchange picture.

Design, construction, and operation of SciFi tracking detector for K2K experiment

We describe the construction and performance of a scintillating fiber detector used in the near detector for the K2K (KEK to Kamioka, KEK E362) long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. The detector uses 3.7 m long and 0.692 mm diameter scintillating fiber coupled to image-intensifier tubes (IIT), and a CCD camera readout system. Fiber sheet production and detector construction began in 1997, and the detector was commissioned in March, 1999. Results from the first K2K runs confirm good initial performance : position resolution is estimated to be about 0.8 mm, and track finding efficiency is $98 \pm 2$ % for long tracks (i.e., those which intersect more than 5 fiber planes). The hit efficiency was estimated to be $92 \pm 2$ % using cosmic-ray muons, after noise reduction at the offline stage. The possibility of using the detector for particle identification is also discussed.
