Standard Model Predictions for Rare K and B Decays without New Physics Infection

The Standard Model (SM) does not contain by definition any new physics (NP) contributions to any observable but contains four CKM parameters which are not predicted by this model. We point out that if these four parameters are determined in a global fit that includes processes which are infected by NP, the resulting SM contributions to rare decay branching ratios cannot be considered as true SM contributions to the latter. On the other hand true SM predictions, that are free from the CKM dependence, can be obtained for suitable ratios of the $K$ and $B$ rare decay branching ratios to $ΔM_s$, $ΔM_d$ and $|\varepsilon_K|$, all calculated within the SM. These three observables contain by now only small hadronic uncertainties and are already well measured so that rather precise true SM predictions for the ratios in question can be obtained. In this context the rapid test of NP infection in the $ΔF=2$ sector is provided by a $|V_{cb}|-γ$ plot that involves $ΔM_s$, $ΔM_d$, $|\varepsilon_K|$, and the mixing induced CP-asymmetry $S_{ψK_S}$. As with the present hadronic matrix elements this test turns out to be negative, assuming negligible NP infection in the $ΔF=2$ sector and setting the values of these four observables to the experimental ones, allows to obtain SM predictions for all $K$ and $B$ rare decay branching ratios that are most accurate to date and as a byproduct to obtain the full CKM matrix on the basis of $ΔF=2$ transitions alone. Using this strategy we obtain SM predictions for 26 branching ratios for rare semileptonic and leptonic $K$ and $B$ decays with the $μ^+μ^-$ pair or the $ν\barν$ pair in the final state. Most interesting turn out to be the anomalies in the low $q^2$ bin in $B^+\to K^+μ^+μ^-$ ($4.4σ$) and $B_s\to ϕμ^+μ^-$ ($4.8σ$).

On the Superiority of the $|V_{cb}|-γ$ Plots over the Unitarity Triangle Plots in the 2020s

The UT plots played already for three decades an important role in the tests of the SM and the determination of the CKM parameters. As of 2022, among the four CKM parameters, $V_{us}$ and $β$ are already measured with respectable precision, while this is not the case of $|V_{cb}|$ and $γ$. In the case of $|V_{cb}|$ the main obstacle are the significant tensions between its inclusive and exclusive determinations from tree-level decays. The present uncertainty in $γ$ of $4^\circ$ from tree-level decays will be reduced to $1^\circ$ by the LHCb and Belle II collaborations in the coming years. Unfortunately in the UT plots $|V_{cb}|$ is not seen and the experimental improvements in the determination of $γ$ from tree-level decays at the level of a few degrees are difficult to appreciate. In view of these deficiencies of the UT plots with respect to $|V_{cb}|$ and $γ$ and the central role these two CKM parameters will play in this decade, the recently proposed plots of $|V_{cb}|$ versus $γ$ extracted from various processes appear to be superior to the UT plots in the flavour phenomenology. We illustrate this idea with $ΔM_s$, $ΔM_d$, $ε_K$ and with rare decays $B_s\toμ^+μ^-$, $B_d\toμ^+μ^-$, $K^+\to π^+ν\barν$ and $K_L\toπ^0ν\barν$. The power of $ε_K$, $K^+\toπ^+ν\barν)$ and $K_{L}\toπ^0ν\barν)$ in the determination of $|V_{cb}|$, due to their strong dependence on $|V_{cb}|$, is transparently exhibited in this manner. Combined with future reduced errors on $γ$ and $|V_{cb}|$ from tree-level decays such plots can better exhibit possible inconsistenices between various determinations of these two parameters, caused by new physics, than it is possible with the UT plots.

$\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ in the Standard Model and Beyond: 2021

The present status of the ratio $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ in the Standard Model (SM) is summarized. In particular we stress the differences between three approaches that attempt to calculate $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ within the SM: Lattice QCD, Dual QCD and Chiral Perturbation Theory. As presently there is still a significant room left for new physics (NP) contributions, we summarize the present status of the technology that has been recently developed with the goal to analyze $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ and its correlations with other observables within the Weak Effective Theory (WET) and the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). We also make a few comments on the interpretation of the main dynamics behind the $ΔI=1/2$ rule in $K\toππ$ decays.

NLO QCD Renormalization Group Evolution for Non-Leptonic $ΔF=2$ Transitions in the SMEFT

We present for the first time NLO QCD Renormalization Group (RG) evolution matrices for non-leptonic $ΔF=2$ transitions in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). To this end we transform first the known two-loop QCD anomalous dimension matrices (ADMs) of the BSM operators in the so-called BMU basis into the ones in the common Weak Effective Theory (WET) basis (the so-called JMS basis) for which tree-level and one-loop matching to the SMEFT are already known. This allows us subsequently to find the two-loop QCD ADMs for the SMEFT non-leptonic $ΔF=2$ operators in the Warsaw basis. Having all these ingredients we investigate the impact of these NLO QCD effects on the QCD RG evolution of SMEFT Wilson coefficients for non-leptonic $ΔF=2$ transitions from the new physics scale $Λ$ down to the electroweak scale $μ_\text{ew}$. The main benefit of these new contributions is that they allow to remove renormalization scheme dependences present both in the one-loop matchings between the WET and SMEFT and also between SMEFT and a chosen UV completion. But the NLO QCD effects, calculated here in the NDR scheme, turn out to be small, in the ballpark of a few percent but larger than one-loop Yukawa top effects when only the $ΔF=2$ operators are considered. The technology developed in our paper allows to obtain the ADMs in the SMEFT from the ones of the BMU basis also for non-leptonic $ΔF=1$ decays and the results of this more involved analysis will be presented soon in another publication.

On the Importance of Rare Kaon Decays: A Snowmass 2021 White Paper

We stress the importance of precise measurements of rare decays $K^+\rightarrowπ^+ν\barν$, $K_L\rightarrowπ^0ν\barν$, $K_{L,S}\toμ^+μ^-$ and $K_{L,S}\toπ^0\ell^+\ell^-$ for the search of new physics (NP). This includes both branching ratios and the distributions in $q^2$, the invariant mass-squared of the neutrino system in the case of $K^+\rightarrowπ^+ν\barν$ and $K_L\rightarrowπ^0ν\barν$ and of the $\ell^+\ell^-$ system in the case of the remaining decays. In particular the correlations between these observables and their correlations with the ratio $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ in $K_L\toππ$ decays, the CP-violating parameter $\varepsilon_K$ and the $K^0-\bar K^0$ mass difference $ΔM_K$, should help to disentangle the nature of possible NP. We stress the strong sensitivity of all observables with the exception of $ΔM_K$ to the CKM parameter $|V_{cb}|$ and list a number of $|V_{cb}|$-independent ratios within the SM which exhibit rather different dependences on the angles $β$ and $γ$ of the unitarity triangle. The particular role of these decays in probing very short distance scales far beyond the ones explored at the LHC is emphasized. In this context the role of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) is very important. We also address briefly the issue of the footprints of Majorana neutrinos in $K^+\rightarrowπ^+ν\barν$ and $K_L\rightarrowπ^0ν\barν$.

Searching for New Physics in Rare $K$ and $B$ Decays without $|V_{cb}|$ and $|V_{ub}|$ Uncertainties

We reemphasize the strong dependence of the branching ratios $B(K^+\toπ^+ν\barν)$ and $B(K_L\toπ^0ν\barν)$ on $|V_{cb}|$ that is stronger than in rare $B$ decays, in particular for $K_L\toπ^0ν\barν$. Thereby the persistent tension between inclusive and exclusive determinations of $|V_{cb}|$ weakens the power of these theoretically clean decays in the search for new physics (NP). We demonstrate how this uncertainty can be practically removed by considering within the SM suitable ratios of the two branching ratios between each other and with other observables like the branching ratios for $K_S\toμ^+μ^-$, $B_{s,d}\toμ^+μ^-$ and $B\to K(K^*)ν\barν$. We use as basic CKM parameters $V_{us}$, $|V_{cb}|$ and the angles $β$ and $γ$ in the unitarity triangle (UT). This avoids the use of the problematic $|V_{ub}|$. A ratio involving $B(K^+\toπ^+ν\barν)$ and $B(B_s\toμ^+μ^-)$ while being $|V_{cb}|$-independent exhibits sizable dependence on the angle $γ$. It should be of interest for several experimental groups in the coming years. We point out that the $|V_{cb}|$-independent ratio of $B(B^+\to K^+ν\barν)$ and $B(B_s\toμ^+μ^-)$ from Belle II and LHCb signals a $1.8σ$ tension with its SM value. As a complementary test of the Standard Model, we propose to extract $|V_{cb}|$ from different observables as a function of $β$ and $γ$. We illustrate this with $ε_K$, $ΔM_d$ and $ΔM_s$ finding tensions between these three determinations of $|V_{cb}|$ within the SM. From $ΔM_s$ and $S_{ψK_S}$ alone we find $|V_{cb}|=41.8(6)\times 10^{-3}$ and $|V_{ub}|=3.65(12)\times 10^{-3}$. We stress the importance of a precise measurement of $γ$. We obtain most precise SM predictions for considered branching ratios of rare K and B decays to date.

Standard Model Predictions for Rare $K$ and $B$ Decays without $|V_{cb}|$ and $|V_{ub}|$ Uncertainties

The persistent tensions between inclusive and exclusive determinations of $|V_{cb}|$ and $|V_{ub}|$ weaken the power of theoretically clean rare $K$ and $B$ decays in the search for new physics (NP). We demonstrate how this uncertainty can be practically removed by considering within the SM suitable ratios of various branching ratios. This includes the branching ratios for $K^+\toπ^+ν\barν$, $K_{L}\toπ^0ν\barν$, $K_S\toμ^+μ^-$, $B_{s,d}\toμ^+μ^-$ and $B\to K(K^*)ν\barν$. Also $ε_K$, $ΔM_d$, $ΔM_s$ and the mixing induced CP-asymmetry $S_{ψK_S}$, all measured already very precisely, play an important role in this analysis. The highlights of our analysis are 16 $|V_{cb}|$ and $|V_{ub}|$ independent ratios that often are independent of the CKM arameters or depend only on the angles $β$ and $γ$ in the Unitarity Triangle with $β$ already precisely known and $γ$ to be measured precisely in the coming years by the LHCb and Belle II collaborations. Once $γ$ Once $γ$ is measured precisely these 16 ratios taken together are expected to be a powerful tool in the search for new physics. Assuming no NP in $|ε_K|$ and $S_{ψK_S}$ we determine independently of $|V_{cb}|$: $\mathcal{B}(K^+\toπ^+ν\barν)_\text{SM}= (8.60\pm0.42)\times 10^{-11}$ and $\mathcal{B}(K_L\toπ^0ν\barν)_\text{SM}=(2.94\pm 0.15)\times 10^{-11}$. This are the most precise determinations to date. Assuming no NP in $ΔM_{s,d}$ allows to obtain analogous results for all $B$ decay branching ratios considered in our paper without any CKM uncertainties.

The Exclusive Vision of Rare $K$ and $B$ Decays and of the Quark Mixing in the Standard Model

The most common predictions for rare $K$ and $B$ decay branching ratios in the Standard Model are based on the CKM elements $|V_{cb}|$ and $|V_{ub}|$ resulting from global fits, that are in the ballpark of their inclusive and exclusive determinations, respectively. In the present paper we follow another route. We assume that the future true values of $|V_{cb}|$ and $|V_{ub}|$ will be both from exclusive determinations and set them equal to the most recent ones from FLAG. An unusual pattern of SM predictions results from this study with some existing tensions being dwarfed and new tensions being born. In particular using the HPQCD $B^0_{s,d}-\bar B^0_{s,d}$ hadronic matrix elements a $3.1σ$ tension in $ΔM_s$ independently of $γ$ is found. For $60^\circ\leγ\le 75^\circ$ the tension in $ΔM_d$ between $4.0σ$ and $1.1σ$ is found and in the case of $ε_K$ between $5.2σ$ and $2.1σ$. Moreover, the room for new physics in $K^+\toπ^+ν\barν$, $K_L\toπ^0ν\barν$ and $B\to K(K^*)ν\barν$ decays is significantly increased. We compare the results in this EXCLUSIVE scenario with the HYBRID one in which $|V_{cb}|$ in the former scenario is replaced by the most recent inclusive $|V_{cb}|$ and present the dependence of all observables considered by us in both scenarios as functions of $γ$. We also compare the determination of $|V_{cb}|$ from $ΔM_s$, $ΔM_d$, $ε_K$ and $S_{ψK_S}$ using $B^0_{s,d}-\bar B^0_{s,d}$ hadronic matrix elements from LQCD with $2+1+1$ flavours, $2+1$ flavours and their average. Only for the $2+1+1$ case values for $β$ and $γ$ exist for which the same value of $|V_{cb}|$ is found: $|V_{cb}|=42.6(4)\times 10^{-3}$. This in turn implies a $2.7σ$ anomaly in $B_s\toμ^+μ^-$.

BSM Master Formula for $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ in the WET Basis at NLO in QCD

As an important step towards a complete next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD analysis of the ratio $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ within the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT), we present for the first time the NLO master formula for the BSM part of this ratio expressed in terms of the Wilson coefficients of all contributing operators evaluated at the electroweak scale. To this end we use the common Weak Effective Theory (WET) basis (the so-called JMS basis) for which tree-level and one-loop matching to the SMEFT are already known. The relevant hadronic matrix elements of BSM operators at the electroweak scale are taken from Dual QCD approach and the SM ones from lattice QCD. It includes the renormalization group evolution and quark-flavour threshold effects at NLO in QCD from hadronic scales, at which these matrix elements have been calculated, to the electroweak scale.

Leptoquarks meet $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ and rare Kaon processes

We analyse for the first time the CP violating ratio $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ in $K\to ππ$ decays in leptoquark (LQ) models. Assuming a mass gap to the electroweak (EW) scale, the main mechanism for LQs to contribute to $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ is EW gauge-mixing of semi-leptonic into non-leptonic operators, which we treat in the Standard Model effective theory (SMEFT). We perform also the one-loop decoupling for scalar LQs, finding that in all models with both left-handed and right-handed LQ couplings box-diagrams generate numerically strongly enhanced EW-penguin operators $Q_{8,8'}$ already at the LQ scale. We then investigate correlations of $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ with rare Kaon processes ($K_L\toπ^0ν\barν$, $K^+\toπ^+ν\barν$, $K_L\toπ^0\ell\bar\ell$, $K_S\toμ\barμ$, $ΔM_K$ and $\varepsilon_K$) and find that even imposing only a moderate enhancement of $(\varepsilon'/\varepsilon)_{\rm NP} = 5 \times 10^{-4}$ to explain the current anomaly hinted by the Dual QCD approach and RBC-UKQCD lattice QCD calculations leads to conflicts with experimental upper bounds on rare Kaon processes. They exclude all LQ models with only a single coupling as an explanation of the $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ anomaly and put strong-to-serious constraints on parameter spaces of the remaining models. Future results on $K^+\toπ^+ν\barν$ from the NA62 collaboration, $K_L\toπ^0ν\barν$ from the KOTO experiment and $K_S\toμ\barμ$ from LHCb will even stronger exhibit the difficulty of LQ models in explaining the measured $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$, in case the $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ anomaly will be confirmed by improved lattice QCD calculations. Hopefully also improved measurements of $K_L\toπ^0\ell\bar\ell$ decays will one day help in this context.

The $ε'/ε$-Story: 1976-2021

The ratio $ε'/ε$ measures the size of the direct CP violation in $K_L\toππ$ decays $(ε^\prime)$ relative to the indirect one described by $ε$ and is very sensitive to new sources of CP violation. As such it played a prominent role in particle physics already for 45 years. Due to the smallness of $ε'/ε$ its measurement required heroic efforts in the 1980s and the 1990s on both sides of the Atlantic with final results presented by NA48 and KTeV collaborations 20 years ago. Unfortunately, even 45 years after the first calculation of $ε'/ε$ we do not know to which degree the Standard Model agrees with this data and how large is the room left for new physics contributions to this ratio. This is due to significant non-perturbative (hadronic) uncertainties accompanied by partial cancellation between the QCD penguin contributions and electroweak penguin contributions. While the significant control over the short distance perturbative effects has been achieved already in the early 1990s, with several improvements since then, different views on the non-perturbative contributions to $ε'/ε$ have been expressed by different authors over last thirty years. In fact even today the uncertainty in the room left for NP contributions to $ε'/ε$ is very significant. My own work on $ε'/ε$ started in 1983 and involved both perturbative and non-perturbative calculations. This writing is a non-technical recollection of the steps which led to the present status of $ε'/ε$ including several historical remarks not known to everybody. The present status of the $ΔI=1/2$ rule is also summarized. This story is dedicated to Jean-Marc Gerard on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of our collaboration and his 64th birthday.

$\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ in the Standard Model at the Dawn of the 2020s

We reanalyse the ratio $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ in the Standard Model (SM) using most recent hadronic matrix elements from the RBC-UKQCD collaboration in combination with most important NNLO QCD corrections to electroweak penguin contributions and the isospin-breaking corrections. We illustrate the importance of the latter by using their latest estimate from chiral perturbation theory (ChPT) based on the $octet$ approximation for lowest-lying mesons and a very recent estimate in the $nonet$ scheme that takes into account the contribution of $η_0$. We find $(\varepsilon'/\varepsilon)^{(8)}_\text{SM} = (17.4 \pm 6.1) \times 10^{-4}$ and $(\varepsilon'/\varepsilon)^{(9)}_\text{SM} = (13.9 \pm 5.2) \times 10^{-4}$, respectively. Despite a very good agreement with the measured value $(\varepsilon'/\varepsilon)_\text{exp} = (16.6 \pm 2.3) \times 10^{-4}$, the large error in $(\varepsilon'/\varepsilon)_\text{SM}$ still leaves room for significant new physics (BSM) contributions to this ratio. We update the 2018 master formula for $(\varepsilon'/\varepsilon)_\text{BSM}$ valid in any extension beyond the SM without additional light degrees of freedom. We provide new values of the penguin parameters $B_6^{(1/2)}(μ)$ and $B_8^{(3/2)}(μ)$ at the $μ$-scales used by the RBC-UKQCD collaboration and at lower scales $\mathcal{O}(1\,\text{GeV})$ used by ChPT and DQCD. We present semi-analytic formulae for $(\varepsilon'/\varepsilon)_\text{SM}$ in terms of these parameters and $\hatΩ_\text{eff}$ that summarizes isospin-breaking corrections to this ratio. We stress the importance of lattice calculations of the $\mathcal{O}(α_\text{em})$ contributions to the hadronic matrix elements necessary for the removal of renormalization scheme dependence at $\mathcal{O}(α_\text{em})$ in the present analyses of $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$.

Isospin-breaking in $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$: Impact of $η_0$ at the Dawn of the 2020s

For direct CP-violation in $K\toππ$ decays, the usual isospin-breaking effects at the percent level are amplified by the dynamics behind the $ΔI=1/2$ rule and conventionally encoded in $Ω_{\rm IB}$ parameters. The updated prediction $Ω_{\rm IB}^{(8)}=(15.9\pm 8.2)\times 10^{-2}$ of the Chiral Perturbation Theory for the strong isospin-breaking due to $π_3-η_8$ mixing confirms such a tendency but is quite sensitive to the theoretical input value of the low-energy constant corresponding to the flavour-singlet $η_0$ exchange contribution in this truncated octet scheme. We rather exploit the phenomenological $η_8-η_0$ mixing as a probe for the non-negligible flavour-singlet component of the physical $η$ pole to find $Ω_{\rm IB}^{(9)}=(35\pm7)\times 10^{-2}$ in a complete nonet scheme. A large central value in the nonet scheme is thus substituted for a large uncertainty in the octet one. Including the experimental $π^+-π^0$ mass difference as the dominant electromagnetic isospin-breaking, we obtain for the effective parameter entering the ratio $ε'/ε$ an improved result $\hatΩ_{\rm eff}^{(9)}=(29\pm7)\times 10^{-2}$ to be compared with $\hatΩ_{\rm eff}^{(8)}=(17\pm9)\times 10^{-2}$ used in recent analyses of $ε'/ε$. Accordingly, we get a reduction from $(ε'/ε)_{\rm SM}^{(8)}=(17.4\pm 6.1)\times 10^{-4}$ to $(ε'/ε)_{\rm SM}^{(9)}=(13.9\pm 5.2)\times 10^{-4}$ and thereby an effective suppression of $(ε'/ε)_{\rm SM}$ by isospin-breaking corrections as large as $40\%$ relative to the recent RBC-UKQCD value.

On the Importance of NNLO QCD and Isospin-breaking Corrections in $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$

Following the 1999 analysis of Gambino, Haisch and one of us, we stress that all the recent NLO analyses of $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ in the Standard Model (SM) suffer from the renormalization scheme dependence present in the electroweak penguin contributions as well as from scale uncertainties in them related to the matching scale $μ_W$ and in particular to $μ_t$ in $m_t(μ_t)$. We also reemphasize the important role of isospin-breaking and QED effects in the evaluation of $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$. Omitting all these effects, as done in the 2015 analysis by RBC-UKQCD collaboration, and choosing as an example the QCD penguin ($Q_6$) and electroweak penguin ($Q_8$) parameters $B_6^{(1/2)}$ and $B_8^{(3/2)}$ to be $B_6^{(1/2)} = 0.80 \pm 0.08$ and $B_8^{(3/2)} = 0.76 \pm 0.04$ at $μ= m_c = 1.3$ GeV, we find $(\varepsilon'/\varepsilon)_\text{SM} = (9.4 \pm 3.5) \times 10^{-4}$, whereas including them results in $(\varepsilon'/\varepsilon)_\text{SM} = (5.6\pm 2.4) \times 10^{-4}$. This is an example of an anomaly at the $3.3\,σ$ level, which would be missed without these corrections. NNLO QCD contributions to QCD penguins are expected to further enhance this anomaly. We provide a table for $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ for different values of $B_6^{(1/2)}$ and the isospin-breaking parameter $\hatΩ_\text{eff}$, that should facilitate monitoring the values of $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ in the SM when the RBC-UKQCD calculations of hadronic matrix elements including isospin-breaking corrections and QED effects will improve with time.

SMEFT ATLAS of $ΔF=2$ Transitions

We present a model-independent anatomy of the $ΔF=2$ transitions $K^0-\bar K^0$, $B_{s,d}-\bar B_{s,d}$ and $D^0-\bar D^0$ in the context of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). We present two master formulae for the mixing amplitude $\big[M_{12} \big]_\text{BSM}$. One in terms of the Wilson coefficients (WCs) of the Low-Energy Effective Theory (LEFT) operators evaluated at the electroweak scale $μ_\text{ew}$ and one in terms of the WCs of the SMEFT operators evaluated at the BSM scale $Λ$. The coefficients $P_a^{ij}$ entering these formulae contain all the information below the scales $μ_\text{ew}$ and $Λ$, respectively. Renormalization group effects from the top-quark Yukawa coupling play the most important role. The collection of the individual contributions of the SMEFT operators to $\big[M_{12}\big]_\text{BSM}$ can be considered as the SMEFT ATLAS of $ΔF=2$ transitions and constitutes a travel guide to such transitions far beyond the scales explored by the LHC. We emphasize that this ATLAS depends on whether the down-basis or the up-basis for SMEFT operators is considered. We illustrate this technology with tree-level exchanges of heavy gauge bosons ($Z^\prime$, $G^\prime$) and corresponding heavy scalars.

The Optimal Strategy for $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ in the SM: 2019

Following the recent analysis done in collaboration with Jason Aebischer and Christoph Bobeth, I summarize the optimal, in our view, strategy for the present evaluation of the ratio $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ in the Standard Model (SM). In particular, I emphasize the importance of the correct matching of the long-distance and short-distance contributions to $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$, which presently is only achieved by RBC-UKQCD lattice QCD collaboration and by the analytical Dual QCD approach. An mportant role play also the isospin-breaking and QED effects, which presently are best known from chiral perturbation theory, albeit still with a significant error. Finally, it is essential to include NNLO QCD corrections in order to reduce unphysical renormalization scheme and scale dependences present at the NLO level. Here $μ_c$ in $m_c(μ_c)$ in the case of QCD penguin (QCDP) contributions and $μ_t$ in $m_t(μ_t)$ in the case of electroweak penguin (EWP) contributions play the most important roles. Presently the error on $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ is dominated by the uncertainties in the QCDP parameter $B_6^{(1/2)}$ and the isospin-breaking parameter $\hatΩ_\text{eff}$ We present a table illustrating this. To be published online by the Institute of Physics Proceedings.

Quark-Lepton Connections in $Z^\prime$ Mediated FCNC Processes: Gauge Anomaly Cancellations at Work

We consider scenarios with a heavy $Z^\prime$ gauge boson with flavour non-universal quark and lepton couplings with the goal to illustrate how the cancellation of gauge anomalies generated by the additional U(1)$^\prime$ gauge symmetry would imply correlations between FCNC processes in the quark sector, in the lepton sector and most interestingly between quark flavour and lepton flavour violating processes. We present scenarios with only left-handed flavour-violating $Z^\prime$ couplings and those with also right-handed flavour-violating couplings. These are characterized by a small number of free parameters but in contrast to gauge anomaly cancellation in the Standard Model, that takes place separately within each generation, in our scenarios anomaly cancellation involves simultaneously quarks and leptons of all three generations. Our models involve, beyond the ordinary quarks and leptons, three heavy right-handed neutrinos. The models with only left-handed FCNCs of $Z^\prime$ involve beyond $g_{Z^\prime}$ and $M_{Z^\prime}$ two real parameters characterizing the charges of all fermions under the U(1)$^\prime$ gauge symmetry and the CKM and PMNS ones in the quark and lepton sectors, respectively. The models with the right-handed FCNCs of $Z^\prime$ involve few additional parameters. Imposing constraints from well measured $ΔF=2$ observables we identify interesting correlations that involve e.g. $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$, $B_{s,d}\toμ^+μ^-$, $B\to K(K^*) \ell^+\ell^-$, $K^+\rightarrowπ^+ν\barν$, $K_{L}\rightarrowπ^0ν\barν$ and purely lepton flavour violating decays like $μ\to eγ$, $μ\to 3 e$, $τ\to 3μ$ and $μ-e$ conversion} among others. Also $(g-2)_{μ,e}$ are considered. The impact of the experimental $μ\to eγ$, $μ\to 3 e$ and in particular $μ-e$ conversion bounds on rare $K$ and $B$ decays is emphasized.

$\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ in 331 Models

Motivated by the recent findings that the ratio $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ in the Standard Model (SM) appears to be significantly below the data we investigate whether the necessary enhancement of this ratio can be obtained in 331 models, in which new physics (NP) contributions to $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ and other flavour observables are dominated by tree-level exchanges of a $Z^\prime$. NP contributions to $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ in these models are governed by the electroweak operator $Q_8$ for which the hadronic matrix element is rather well known so that our analysis of NP contributions is subject to much smaller uncertainties than within the SM. We consider seven 331 models selected in our earlier analysis on the basis of electroweak precision data. Imposing the constraints from $ΔF=2$ transitions we find that only three of these models can provide a significant positive shift in $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ up to $6\times 10^{-4}$ for $M_{Z^\prime}=3$ TeV. Two of them allow simultaneously a supression of ${\cal B}(B_{s}\to μ^+μ^-)$ by $20\%$, bringing the theory closer to the data without any significant impact on the Wilson coefficient $C_9$. The third one provides also the shift $ΔC_9=-0.6$, softening the anomalies in $B\to K^*μ^+μ^-$, without any significant impact on $B_{s}\to μ^+μ^-$. NP effects in rare $K$ decays and in $B\to K(K^*)ν\barν$ turn out to be small. The flavour structure of 331 models implies that even for $M_{Z^\prime}=30$ Tev a shift of $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ up to $8\times 10^{-4}$ and a significant shift in $\varepsilon_K$ can be obtained, while the effects in other flavour observables are small.

331 Models Facing the Tensions in $ΔF=2$ Processes with the Impact on $\varepsilon^\prime/\varepsilon$, $B_s\toμ^+μ^-$ and $B\to K^*μ^+μ^-$

Motivated by the recently improved lattice QCD results on the hadronic matrix elements entering $ΔM_{s,d}$ in $B_{s,d}^0-\bar B_{s,d}^0$ mixings and the resulting increased tensions between $ΔM_{s,d}$ and $\varepsilon_K$ in the Standard Model and CMFV models, we demonstrate that these tensions can be removed in 331 models based on the gauge group $SU(3)_C\times SU(3)_L\times U(1)_X$ both for $M_{Z^\prime}$ in the LHC reach and well beyond it. But the implied new physics (NP) patterns in $ΔF=1$ observables depend sensitively on the value of $|V_{cb}|$. Concentrating the analysis on three 331 models that have been selected by us previously on the basis of their performance in electroweak precision tests and $\varepsilon^\prime/\varepsilon$ we illustrate this for $|V_{cb}|=0.042$ and $|V_{cb}|=0.040$. We find that these new lattice data still allow for positive shifts in $\varepsilon^\prime/\varepsilon$ up to $6\times 10^{-4}$ for $M_{Z^\prime}=3~TeV$ for both values of $$|V_{cb}|$ but for $M_{Z^\prime}=10~TeV$ only for $|V_{cb}|=0.040$ such shifts can be obtained. NP effects in $B_s\toμ^+μ^-$ and in the Wilson coefficient $C_9$ are significantly larger in all three models for the case of $|V_{cb}|=0.040$. In particular in two models the rate for $B_s\toμ^+μ^-$ can be reduced by NP by $20\%$ for $M_{Z^\prime}=3~TeV$ resulting in values in the ballpark of central values from CMS and LHCb. In the third model a shift in $C_9$ up to $C_9^\text{NP}=-0.5$ is possible. We also consider the simplest 331 model, analyzed recently in the literature, in which $X=Y$, the usual hypercharge. We find that in this model NP effects in flavour observables are much smaller than in the three models with $X\not=Y$, in particular NP contributions to the ratio $\varepsilon^\prime/\varepsilon$ are very strongly suppressed.

Charm Quark Contribution to K+ -> pi+ nu anti-nu at Next-to-Next-to-Leading Order

We calculate the complete NNLO QCD corrections to the charm contribution of the rare decay K+ -> pi+ nu nu-bar. We encounter several new features, which were absent in lower orders. We discuss them in detail and present the results for the 2-loop matching conditions of the Wilson coefficients, the 3-loop anomalous dimensions, and the 2-loop matrix elements of the relevant operators that enter the NNLO renormalization group analysis of the Z-penguin and the electroweak box contribution. The inclusion of the NNLO QCD corrections leads to a significant reduction of the theoretical uncertainty from 9.8% down to 2.4% in the relevant parameter Pc, implying the leftover scale uncertainties in BR(K+ -> pi+ nu nu-bar) and in the determination of |V_td|, sin(2 beta), and gamma from the K -> pi nu nu system to be 1.3%, 1.0%, 0.006, and 1.2 degrees, respectively. For the charm quark MSbar mass mc=(1.30+-0.05) GeV and |V_us|= 0.2248 the NLO value Pc=0.37+-0.06 is modified to Pc=0.38+-0.04 at the NNLO level with the latter error fully dominated by the uncertainty in mc. We present tables for Pc as a function of mc and alphas(MZ) and a very accurate analytic formula that summarizes these two dependences as well as the dominant theoretical uncertainties. Adding the recently calculated long-distance contributions we find BR(K+ -> pi+ nu nu-bar)=(8.0+-1.1)*10^-11 with the present uncertainties in mc and the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa elements being the dominant individual sources in the quoted error. We also emphasize that improved calculations of the long-distance contributions to K+ -> pi+ nu nu-bar and of the isospin breaking corrections in the evaluation of the weak current matrix elements from K+ -> pi0 e+ nu would be valuable in order to increase the potential of the two golden K -> pi nu nu decays in the search for new physics.

New Physics Patterns in $\varepsilon^\prime/\varepsilon$ and $\varepsilon_K$ with Implications for Rare Kaon Decays and $ΔM_K$

The SM prediction for the ratio $\varepsilon^\prime/\varepsilon$ appears to be significantly below the experimental data. Also $\varepsilon_K$ in the SM tends to be below the data. Any NP removing these anomalies will first of all have impact on flavour observables in the $K$ meson system, in particular on rare $K$ decays and $ΔM_K$. Restricting the operators contributing to $\varepsilon^\prime/\varepsilon$ to the SM ones and to the corresponding primed operators, NP contributions are quite generally dominated either by QCD penguin (QCDP) operators $Q_6(Q_6^\prime)$ or electroweak penguin (EWP) operators $Q_8(Q_8^\prime)$ with rather different implications for other flavour observables. We discuss general models with tree-level $Z$ and $Z^\prime$ flavour violating exchanges and few specific models. We find that simultaneous enhancements of $\varepsilon^\prime/\varepsilon$, $\varepsilon_K$, $\mathcal{B}(K_L\toπ^0ν\barν)$ and $\mathcal{B}(K^+\toπ^+ν\barν)$ in $Z$ scenarios are only possible in the presence of both LH and RH flavour-violating couplings. In $Z^\prime$ scenarios this is not required but the size of NP effects and the correlation between $\mathcal{B}(K_L\toπ^0ν\barν)$ and $\mathcal{B}(K^+\toπ^+ν\barν)$ depends strongly on whether QCDP or EWP dominate NP contributions to $\varepsilon^\prime/\varepsilon$. In the QCDP case possible enhancements of both branching ratios are much larger than for EWP scenario and take place only on the branch parallel to the Grossman-Nir bound, which is in the case of EWP dominance only possible in the absence of NP in $\varepsilon_K$. QCDP and EWP scenarios of NP in $\varepsilon^\prime/\varepsilon$ can also be uniquely distinguished by the size and the sign of NP contribution to $ΔM_K$, elevating the importance of the precise calculation of $ΔM_K$ in the SM.

Quark flavour observables in the Littlest Higgs model with T-parity after LHC Run 1

The Littlest Higgs Model with T-parity (LHT) belongs to the simplest new physics scenarios with new sources of flavour and CP violation. We present a new analysis of quark observables in the LHT model in view of the oncoming flavour precision era. We use all available information on the CKM parameters, lattice QCD input and experimental data on quark flavour observables and corresponding theoretical calculations, taking into account new lower bounds on the symmetry breaking scale and the mirror quark masses from the LHC. We investigate by how much the branching ratios for a number of rare $K$ and $B$ decays are still allowed to depart from their SM values. This includes $K^+\toπ^+ν\barν$, $K_L\toπ^0ν\barν$, $K_L\to μ^+μ^-$, $ε'/ε$, $B\to X_sγ$, $B_{s,d}\toμ^+μ^-$, $B\to K^{(*)}\ell^+\ell^-$, $B\to K^{(*)}ν\barν$. Taking into account the constraints from $ΔF=2$ processes, significant departures from the SM predictions for $K^+\toπ^+ν\barν$ and $K_L\toπ^0ν\barν$ are possible while the effects in $B$ decays are much smaller. In particular, the LHT model favours $\mathcal{B}(B_{s}\toμ^+μ^-) \ge \mathcal{B}(B_{s}\toμ^+μ^-)_{\rm SM}$, which is not supported by the data, and the present anomalies in $B\to K^{(*)}\ell^+\ell^-$ decays cannot be explained in this model. With the recent lattice and large $N$ input the imposition of the $ε'/ε$ constraint implies a significant suppression of the branching ratio for $K_L\toπ^0ν\barν$ with respect to its SM value while allowing only for small modifications for $K^+\toπ^+ν\barν$. Finally, we investigate how the LHT physics could be distinguished from other models by means of indirect measurements and discuss the consequences for quark flavour observables of not finding any LHT state in the coming years.

The Renaissance of Kaon Flavour Physics

There is no doubt that in the coming years we will witness the renaissance of kaon flavour physics with crucial measurements of the branching ratios for the rare decays $K^+\rightarrowπ^+ν\barν$ and $K_{L}\rightarrowπ^0ν\barν$ that are very sensitive to new physics (NP) and are theoretically very clean. Simultaneously the role of $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$, $\varepsilon_K$, $ΔM_K$, $K_L\toμ^+μ^-$ and $K_L\toπ^0\ell^+\ell^-$ in searching for NP will significantly increase through their improved estimates within the SM. In fact the hints for NP contributing to $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ have been signalled last year through improved estimates of hadronic matrix elements of QCD and electroweak penguin operators $Q_6$ and $Q_8$ by lattice QCD and large $N$ dual QCD approach. Also recent increased tensions between $\varepsilon_K$ and $ΔM_{s,d}$ mass differences in $B_{s,d}^0-\bar B_{s,d}^0$ mixing within the SM and models with constrained MFV tell us that we should have tremendous fun in chasing NP through all these observables. The present talk discusses the hinted anomalies in $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$,and $ΔF=2$ transitions and summarizes possible implications of simultaneous anomalies in $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ and $\varepsilon_K$ for $K^+\rightarrowπ^+ν\barν$ and $K_{L}\rightarrowπ^0ν\barν$ and $ΔM_K$ in models with tree-level $Z$ and $Z^\prime$ exchanges. The anomalies in $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ and $\varepsilon_K$, if confirmed, would signal new sources of CP violation. This is in contrast to the recent anomalies in $B$ physics that signal lepton flavour non-universalities and NP in CP-conserving observables. Highlights from recent flavour analyses of 331 models are briefly described.

The Revival of Kaon Flavour Physics

After years of silence we should witness in the rest of this decade and in the next decade the revival of kaon flavour physics. This is not only because of the crucial measurements of the branching ratios for the rare decays $K^+\toπ^+ν\barν$ and $K_{L}\to π^0ν\barν$ by NA62 and KOTO that being theoretically clean and very sensitive to new physics (NP) could hint for new phenomena even beyond the reach of the LHC without any significant theoretical uncertainties. Indeed simultaneously the advances in the calculations of perturbative and in particular non-perturbative QCD effects in $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$, $\varepsilon_K$, $ΔM_K$, $K_L\toμ^+μ^-$ and $K_L\toπ^0\ell^+\ell^-$ will increase the role of these observables in searching for NP. In fact the hints for NP contributing to $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ have been already signalled last year through improved estimates of hadronic matrix elements of QCD and electroweak penguin operators $Q_6$ and $Q_8$ by lattice QCD and large $N$ dual QCD approach. This talk summarizes in addition to this new flavour anomaly the present highlights of this field including some results from concrete NP scenarios.

$K\toπν\barν$ and $ε'/ε$ in Simplified New Physics Models

The decays $K^+\toπ^+ν\barν$ and $K_L\toπ^0ν\barν$, being the theoretically cleanest rare decays of mesons, are very sensitive probes of New Physics. In view of the excellent prospects of reaching the Standard Model sensitivity for $K^+\toπ^+ν\barν$ by the NA62 experiment at CERN and for $K_L\toπ^0ν\barν$ by the KOTO experiment at J-PARC, we study them in the simplest extensions of the SM in which stringent correlations between these two decays and other flavour observables are present. We first consider simple models with tree-level Z and Z' contributions in which either MFV or a $U(2)^3$ symmetry is imposed on the quark flavour-violating couplings. We then compare the resulting correlations with those present in generic models in which the latter couplings are arbitrary, subject to constraints from $ΔF=2$ processes, electroweak and collider data. Of particular interest are the correlations with $ε'/ε$ and $K_L\toμ^+μ^-$ which limit the size of NP contributions to $K^+\toπ^+ν\barν$ and $K_L\toπ^0ν\barν$, depending on the Dirac structure of couplings and the relevant operators. But in MFV also the constraint from $B_s\toμ^+μ^-$ turns out to be important. We take into account the recent results from lattice QCD and large N approach that indicate $ε'/ε$ in the SM to be significantly below the data. While in many models the enhancement of $ε'/ε$ implies a suppression of $K_L\toπ^0ν\barν$, we present two models in which these observables can be simultaneously enhanced relative to SM predictions. A correlation between $K^+\toπ^+ν\barν$ and $B\to K(K^*)μ^+μ^-$, found by us in the simple models considered here, should be of interest for NA62 and LHCb experimentalists at CERN in the coming years. The one with $B\to K(K^*)ν\barν$ will be tested at Belle II.

$K^+\toπ^+ν\barν$ and $K_L\toπ^0ν\barν$ in the Standard Model: Status and Perspectives

In view of the recent start of the NA62 experiment at CERN that is expected to measure the $K^+\toπ^+ν\barν$ branching ratio with a precision of 10%, we summarise the present status of this promising decay within the Standard Model (SM). We do likewise for the closely related $K_L\toπ^0ν\barν$, which will be measured by the KOTO experiment around 2020. As the perturbative QCD and electroweak corrections in both decays are under full control, the dominant uncertainties within the SM presently originate from the CKM parameters $V_{cb}$, $V_{ub}$ and $γ$. We show this dependence with the help of analytic expressions as well as accurate interpolating formulae. Unfortunately a clarification of the discrepancies between inclusive and exclusive determinations of $V_{cb}$ and $V_{ub}$ from tree-level decays will likely require results from the Belle II experiment available at the end of this decade. Thus we investigate whether higher precision on both branching ratios is achievable by determining $V_{cb}$, $V_{ub}$ and $γ$ by means of other observables that are already precisely measured. In this context $\varepsilon_K$ and $ΔM_{s,d}$, together with the expected progress in QCD lattice calculations will play a prominent role. We find $\mathcal{B}(K^+\toπ^+ν\barν) = (9.11\pm 0.72) \times 10^{-11}$ and $\mathcal{B}(K_L\toπ^0ν\barν) = (3.00\pm 0.30) \times 10^{-11}$, which is more precise than using averages of the present tree-level values of $V_{cb}$, $V_{ub}$ and $γ$. Furthermore, we point out the correlation between $\mathcal{B}(K^+\toπ^+ν\barν)$, $\overline{\mathcal{B}}(B_s\toμ^+μ^-)$ and $γ$ within the SM, that is only very weakly dependent on other CKM parameters. Finally, we also update the ratio $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ in the SM and present its correlation with $K_L\toπ^0ν\barν$.

Flavour Expedition to the Zeptouniverse

After the completion of the Standard Model (SM) through the Higgs discovery particle physicists are waiting for the discovery of new particles either directly with the help of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) or indirectly through quantum fluctuations causing certain rare processes to occur at different rates than predicted by the SM. While the later route is very challenging, requiring very precise theory and experiment, it allows a much higher resolution of short distance scales than it is possible with the help of the LHC. In fact in the coming flavour precision era, in which the accuracy of the measurements of rare processes and of the relevant lattice QCD calculations will be significantly increased, there is a good chance that we may get an insight into the scales as short as 10^{-21} m (Zeptouniverse) corresponding to energy scale of 200 TeV or even shorter distance scales. We discuss the requirements that have to be met for such a flavour expedition to the Zeptouniverse to be successful. In particular we emphasize the power of correlations between flavour observables in the search for New Physics and identify a number of correlations that could allow to discover NP even if it would appear at the level of 20% of the SM contributions. The correlation between K^+\toπ^+ν\barν, B_s\toμ^+μ^- and γextracted from tree-level decays within the SM is one of them. We address the recent data on B_{s,d}\toμ^+μ^- and the anomalies in B_d\to K(K^*)μ^+μ^-, including breakdown of lepton flavour universality. We emphasize the correlations of B_d\to K(K^*)μ^+μ^- with B_d\to K(K^*)ν\barν. We summarize the recent study of K\toπν\barνand B_{d,s}\toμ^+μ^- decays which demonstrates that these decays play important roles in finding out what happens in the Zeptouniverse.

Improved anatomy of epsilon'/epsilon in the Standard Model

We present a new analysis of the ratio epsilon'/epsilon within the Standard Model (SM) using a formalism that is manifestly independent of the values of leading (V-A)x(V-A) QCD penguin, and EW penguin hadronic matrix elements of the operators Q_4, Q_9, and Q_10, and applies to the SM as well as extensions with the same operator structure. It is valid under the assumption that the SM exactly describes the data on CP-conserving K -> pi pi amplitudes. As a result of this and the high precision now available for CKM and quark mass parameters, to high accuracy epsilon'/epsilon depends only on two non-perturbative parameters, B_6^(1/2) and B_8^(3/2), and perturbatively calculable Wilson coefficients. Within the SM, we are separately able to determine the hadronic matrix element <Q_4>_0 from CP-conserving data, significantly more precisely than presently possible with lattice QCD. Employing B_6^(1/2) = 0.57+-0.19 and B_8^(3/2) = 0.76+-0.05, extracted from recent results by the RBC-UKQCD collaboration, we obtain epsilon'/epsilon = (1.9+-4.5) 10^-4, substantially more precise than the recent RBC-UKQCD prediction and 2.9 sigma below the experimental value (16.6+-2.3) 10^-4, with the error being fully dominated by that on B_6^(1/2). Even discarding lattice input completely, but employing the recently obtained bound B_6^(1/2) <= B_8^(3/2) <= 1 from the large-N approach, the SM value is found more than 2 sigma below the experimental value. At B_6^(1/2) = B_8^(3/2) = 1, varying all other parameters within one sigma, we find epsilon'/epsilon = (8.6+-3.2) 10^-4. We present a detailed anatomy of the various SM uncertainties, including all sub-leading hadronic matrix elements, briefly commenting on the possibility of underestimated SM contributions as well as on the impact of our results on new physics models.

Kaon Theory News

During the last fifteen years B_{s,d} decays, B_{s,d}^0-\bar B^0_{s,d} mixings, CP-violating asymmetries S_{ψK_S} and S_{ψϕ} provided the dominant information about the pattern of flavour violation within the SM and its extensions. We emphasize that in the coming years K meson physics will certainly strike back through the measurements of the branching ratios of theoretically very clean decays K^+->pi^+ν\barνand K_L->π^0ν\barνand improved calculations of the ratio epsilon'/epsilon=\epe. We summarize the status of K^+->pi^+ν\barνand K_L->π^0ν\barνwithin the SM and simplified NP models and update the picture of flavour violation in the Littlest Higgs model with T-parity taking all available constraints into account. But the highlight of this talk are new results on \epe from lattice QCD and large N approach that give a strong indication for a new anomaly in flavour physics, this time coming from K mesons. Indeed, \epe within the SM is found to be significantly below the data of NA48 and KTeV collaborations. Combining lattice results on the non-perturbative parameters B6 and B8 with the assumption that the SM dynamics dominates the Delta I=1/2 rule a 3 sigma anomaly in \epe emerges. Moreover, the recently derived upper bounds on B6 and B8 from large N approach increase the confidence that the found anomaly could be an important signal of NP at work. Of particular importance are the correlations between K^+->pi^+ν\barν, K_L->π^0ν\barνand \epe. With future precise measurements of K^+->pi^+ν\barνand K_L->π^0ν\barνand improved calculations of \epe they will surely provide powerful tools for selecting the favourite NP models. We illustrate this with the help of the LHT model and simplified models in which NP in K\toπν\barνand \epe is governed by Z with flavour violating couplings or by a heavy Z'.

Upper Bounds on epsilon'/epsilon Parameters B_6^{(1/2)} and B_8^{(3/2)} from Large N QCD and other News

We demonstrate that in the large N approach developed by the authors in collaboration with Bardeen, the parameters B_6^{(1/2)} and B_8^{(3/2)} parametrizing the K\toππmatrix elements <Q_6>_0 and <Q_8>_2 of the dominant QCD and electroweak operators receive both negative O(1/N) corrections such that B_6^{(1/2)} < B_8^{(3/2)}<1 in agreement with the recent lattice results of the RBC-UKQCD collaboration. We also point out that the pattern of the size of the hadronic matrix elements of all QCD and electroweak penguin operators Q_i contributing to the K\to ππamplitudes A_0 and A_2, obtained by this lattice collaboration, provides further support to our large N approach. In particular, a very precise lattice result for the matrix element <Q_8>_0 implies for the corresponding parameter B_8^{(1/2)}=1.0\pm 0.2 to be compared with large N value B_8^{(1/2)}=1.1\pm 0.1. We discuss briefly the implications of these findings for the ratio epsilon'/epsilon. In fact, with the precise value for B_8^{(3/2)} from RBC-UKQCD collaboration, our upper bound on B_6^{(1/2)} implies epsilon'/epsilon in the SM roughly by a factor of two below its experimental value (16.6\pm 2.3)\times 10^{-4}. We also briefly comment on the parameter \hat B_K and the ΔI=1/2$ rule.

$B\to K^{(*)}ν\barν$ decays in the Standard Model and beyond

We present an analysis of the rare exclusive $B$ decays $B\to Kν\barν$ and $B\to K^{*}ν\barν$ within the Standard Model (SM), in a model-independent manner, and in a number of new physics (NP) models. Combining new form factor determinations from lattice QCD with light-cone sum rule results and including complete two-loop electroweak corrections to the SM Wilson coefficient, we obtain the SM predictions $\text{BR}(B^+\to K^+ν\barν) = (4.0 \pm 0.5) \times 10^{-6}$ and $\text{BR}(B^0\to K^{* 0}ν\barν) = (9.2\pm1.0) \times 10^{-6}$, more precise and more robust than previous estimates. Beyond the SM, we make use of an effective theory with dimension-six operators invariant under the SM gauge symmetries to relate NP effects in $b\to sν\barν$ transitions to $b\to s\ell^+\ell^-$ transitions and use the wealth of experimental data on $B\to K^{(*)}\ell^+\ell^-$ and related modes to constrain NP effects in $B\to K^{(*)}ν\barν$. We then consider several specific NP models, including $Z'$ models, the MSSM, models with partial compositeness, and leptoquark models, demonstrating that the correlations between $b\to sν\barν$ observables among themselves and with $B_s\toμ^+μ^-$ and $b\to s\ell^+\ell^-$ transitions offer powerful tests of NP with new right-handed couplings and non-MFV interactions.

$ΔI=1/2$ Rule and $\hat B_K$ : 2014

I summarize the status of the $ΔI=1/2$ rule in $K\toππ$ decays within an {\it analytic} approach based on the dual representation of QCD as a theory of weakly interacting mesons for large $N$, where $N$ is the number of colours. This approximate approach, developed in the 1980s by William Bardeen, Jean-Marc Gérard and myself, allowed us already 28 years ago to identify the dominant dynamics behind the $ΔI=1/2$ rule. However, the recent inclusion of lowest-lying vector meson contributions in addition to the pseudoscalar ones to hadronic matrix elements of current-current operators and the calculation of the corresponding Wilson coefficients in a momentum scheme at the NLO improved significantly the matching between quark-gluon short distance contributions and meson long distance contributions over our results in 1986. We obtain satisfactory description of the ${\rm Re}A_2$ amplitude and ${\rm Re}A_0/{\rm Re}A_2=16.0\pm 1.5$ to be compared with its experimental value of $22.3$. While this difference could be the result of present theoretical uncertainties in our approach, it cannot be excluded that New Physics (NP) is here at work. The analysis by Fulvia De Fazio, Jennifer Girrbach-Noe and myself shows that indeed a tree-level $Z^\prime$ or $G^\prime$ exchanges with masses in the reach of the LHC and special couplings to quarks can significantly improve the theoretical status of the $ΔI=1/2$ rule. I stress that our approach allows to understand the physics behind recent numerical results obtained in lattice QCD not only for the $ΔI=1/2$ rule but also for the parameter $\hat B_K$ that enters the evaluation of $\varepsilon_K$. In contrast to the $ΔI=1/2$ rule the chapter on $\hat B_K$ in QCD appears to be basically closed.

Can we reach the Zeptouniverse with rare K and B_{s,d} decays?

The Large Hadron Collider will directly probe distance scales as short as 10^{-19}m, corresponding to energy scales at the level of a few TeV. In order to reach even higher resolutions before the advent of future high-energy colliders, it is necessary to consider indirect probes of New Physics (NP), a prime example being Delta F=2 neutral meson mixing processes, which are sensitive to much shorter distance scales. However Delta F=2 processes alone cannot tell us much about the structure of NP beyond the LHC scales. To identify for instance the presence of new quark flavour-changing dynamics of a left-handed (LH) or right-handed (RH) nature, complementary results from Delta F=1 rare decay processes are vital. We therefore address the important question of whether NP could be seen up to energy scales as high as 200 TeV, corresponding to distances as small as 10^{-21}m -- the Zeptouniverse -- in rare K and B_{s,d} decays, subject to present Delta F=2 constraints and perturbativity. We focus in particular on a heavy Z' gauge boson. If restricted to purely LH or RH Z' couplings to quarks, we find that rare K decays, in particular KL-> pi^0 nu nubar and K^+->pi^+ nu nubar, allow us to probe the Zeptouniverse. On the other hand rare B_s and B_d decays, which receive stronger Delta F=2 constraints, allow us to reach about 15 TeV. Allowing for both LH and RH couplings a loosening of the Delta F=2 constraints is possible, and we find that the maximal values of M_Z' at which NP effects that are consistent with perturbative couplings could be found are approximately 2000 TeV for K decays and 160 TeV for rare B_{s,d} decays. Finally we present a simple idea for an indirect determination of M_Z' that could be realised at the next linear e^+e^- or mu^+ mu^- collider and with future precise flavour data.

Delta I=1/2 Rule, epsilon'/epsilon and K -> pi nu nubar in Z'(Z) and G' Models with FCNC Quark Couplings

The experimental value for the isospin amplitude Re(A_2) in K->pi pi decays has been successfully explained within the Standard Model, both within large N approach to QCD and by QCD lattice calculations. On the other hand in both approaches the theoretical values of Re(A_0) are by at least 30% below the data so that the Delta I=1/2 rule in K->pi pi decays is not fully explained. While this deficit could be the result of present theoretical uncertainties in both approaches, it cannot be excluded that the missing piece in Re(A_0) comes from New Physics. We demonstrate that this deficit can be significantly softened by tree-level FCNC transitions mediated by a heavy colourless Z' gauge boson with particularly chosen flavour violating couplings assuring negligible NP contributions to Re(A_2) and significantly enhancing the contribution of the leading QCD penguin operator Q_6 to Re(A_0). A large fraction of the missing piece in the Delta I=1/2 rule can be explained in this manner for M_{Z'} in the reach of the LHC, while satisfying constraints from epsilon_K, epsilon'/epsilon, Delta M_K, LEP-II and the LHC. We identify quartic correlation between Z' contributions to Re(A_0), epsilon'/epsilon, epsilon_K and Delta M_K. We present correlations between epsilon'/epsilon and rare decays K->pi nu bar{nu} with and without the Delta I=1/2 rule constraint and generalize the whole analysis to Z' with colour (G') and Z with FCNC couplings. In the latter case no improvement on Re(A_0) can be achieved without destroying the agreement of the SM with the data on Re(A_2). Moreover, this scenario is very tightly constrained by epsilon'/epsilon. On the other hand in the context of the Delta I=1/2 rule G' is even more effective than Z': it provides the missing piece in Re(A_0) for M_{G'}=(3.5-4.0) TeV.

Large N Approach to Kaon Decays and Mixing 28 Years Later: Delta I = 1/2 Rule, \hat B_K and Delta M_K

We review and update our results for K-> pipi decays and K^0-\bar K^0 mixing obtained by us in the 1980s within an approach based on the dual representation of QCD as a theory of weakly interacting mesons for large N colours. In our analytic approach the dynamics behind the enhancement of ReA_0 and suppression of ReA_2, the so-called Delta I = 1/2 rule for K-> pi pi decays, has a simple structure: the usual octet enhancement through quark-gluon renormalization group evolution down to the scales O(1 GeV) is continued as a meson evolution down to zero momentum scales at which the factorization of hadronic matrix elements is at work. The inclusion of lowest-lying vector meson contributions in addition to the pseudoscalar ones and of Wilson coefficients in a momentum scheme improves significantly the matching between quark-gluon and meson evolutions. In particular, the anomalous dimension matrix governing the meson evolution exhibits the structure of the known anomalous dimension matrix in the quark-gluon evolution. The recent results on ReA_2 and ReA_0 from the RBC-UKQC collaboration give support for our approach. In particular, the signs of the two main contractions found numerically by these authors follow uniquely from our analytic approach. At NLO in 1/N we obtain ReA_0/ReA_2= 16.0\pm 1.5 which amounts to an order of magnitude enhancement over the strict large N limit value sqrt{2}. QCD penguins contribute at 15% level to this result. We also find \hat B_K=0.73\pm 0.02, with the smallness of 1/N corrections to the large N value \hat B_K=3/4 resulting within our approach from an approximate cancellation between pseudoscalar and vector meson one-loop contributions. We summarize the status of Delta M_K in this approach.

Towards the Identification of New Physics through Quark Flavour Violating Processes

We outline a systematic strategy which should help in this decade to identify New Physics beyond the Standard Model by means of quark flavour violating processes and thereby to extend the picture of short distance physics down to the scales as short as 10^{-20} m and even shorter distance scales corresponding to energies of 100 TeV. Rather then using all possible flavour violating observables that will be measured in the coming years, we concentrate on those observables that are theoretically clean and very sensitive to NP. Assuming that the data on the selected observables by us will be very precise, we stress the importance of correlations between these observables as well as of future precise calculations of non-perturbative parameters by means of lattice QCD. Our strategy consists of twelve steps which we will discuss in detail illustrating possible outcomes with the help of the SM, models with CMFV, MFV and models with tree-level FCNCs mediated by neutral gauge bosons and scalars. We propose DNA-charts that exhibit correlations between flavour observables in different NP scenarios. The models with new left-handed and/or right-handed currents and non-MFV interactions can be distinguished transparently in this manner. We emphasis the important role of the stringent CMFV relations between various observables as standard candles of flavour physics. The pattern of deviations from these relations may help in identifying the correct NP scenario. The success of this program will be very much facilitated through direct signals of NP at the LHC. We also emphasize the importance of lepton flavour violation, electric dipole moments and (g-2)_{e,mu} in these studies.

Z-Z' Mixing and Z-Mediated FCNCs in SU(3)_C x SU(3)_L x U(1)_X Models

Most of the existing analyses of FCNC processes in the 331 models, based on the gauge group SU(3)_C x SU(3)_L x U(1)_X, take only into account tree-level exchanges of a new heavy neutral gauge boson Z'. However due to the Z-Z' mixing also corresponding contributions from Z boson are present that are usually neglected. We calculate the impact of these contributions on Delta F=2 processes and rare K, B_s and B_d decays for different values of a parameter beta, which distinguishes between various 331 models and for different fermion representations under the SU(3)_L group. We find a general expression for the Z-Z' mixing in terms beta, M_Z, M_Z' and tan(bar{beta}), familiar from 2 Higgs Doublet models, that differs from the one quoted in the literature. We study in particular the models with beta=+-n/sqrt{3} with n=1,2 which have recently been investigated by us in the context of new data on B_{s,d}->mu^+ mu^- and B_d->K^*(K)mu^+ mu^-. We find that these new contributions can indeed be neglected in the case of Delta F=2 transitions and decays, like B_d->K^*mu^+mu^-, where they are suppressed by the small vectorial Z coupling to charged leptons. However the contributions of tree-level Z exchanges to decays sensitive to axial-vector couplings, like B_{s,d}->mu^+ mu^- and B_d->K mu^+ mu^-, and those with neutrinos in the final state, like b->s nu bar{nu} transitions, K^+->pi^+ nu bar{nu} and K_L->pi^0 nu bar{nu} cannot be generally neglected with size of Z contributions depending on beta, tan(bar{beta}) and M_Z'. We analyze for the first time the ratio epsilon'/epsilon in these models including both Z' and Z contributions. Our analysis of electroweak precision observables within 331 models demonstrates transparently that the interplay of NP effects in electroweak precision observables and those in flavour observables could allow in the future to identify the favourite 331 model.

331 models facing new b -> s mu^+ mu^- data

We investigate how the 331 models face new data on B_{s,d}->mu^+mu^- and B_d->K^*mu^+mu^- taking into account present constraints from Delta F=2 observables, low energy precision measurements, LEP-II and the LHC data. In these models new flavour violating interactions of ordinary quarks and leptons are dominated by a new heavy Z^prime gauge boson with the strength of the relevant couplings governed by four new parameters in the quark sector and the parameter beta. We study the implications of these models for beta=+-n/sqrt{3} with n=1,2,3. The case beta=-sqrt{3} leading to Landau singularities for M_{Z'}approx 4Tev can be ruled out when the present constraints on Z^prime couplings, in particular from LEP-II, are taken into account. For n=1,2 interesting results are found for M_{Z^prime}< 4Tev with largest NP effects for beta<0 in B_d->K^*mu^+mu^- and the ones in B_{s,d}->mu^+mu^- for beta>0. As Re(C_9^NP) can reach the values -0.8 and -0.4 for n=2 and n=1, respectively the B_d-> K^*mu^+mu^- anomalies can be softened with the size depending on Delta M_s/(Delta M_s)_SM and the CP-asymmetry S_{psiphi}. A correlation between Re(C_9^NP) and BR(B_s->mu^+mu^-), identified for beta<0, implies for negative Re(C_9^NP) uniquely suppression of BR(B_s->mu^+mu^-) relative to its SM value which is favoured by the data. In turn also S_{psiphi}< S_{psiphi}^SM is favoured having dominantly opposite sign to S_{psiphi}^SM. We find that the absence of B_d-> K^*mu^+mu^- anomalies in the future data and confirmation of the suppression of BR(B_s->mu^+mu^-) relative to its SM value would favour beta=1/sqrt{3} and M_{Z'}approx 3Tev. Assuming lepton universality, we find an upper bound |C_9^NP|<1.1(1.4) from LEP-II data for all Z' models with only left-handed flavour violating couplings to quarks when NP contributions to Delta M_s at the level of 10%(15%) are allowed.

Left-handed Z' and Z FCNC quark couplings facing new b -> s mu^+ mu^- data

In view of the recent improved data on B_{s,d}->mu^+ mu^- and B_d->K^*mu^+mu^- we revisit two simple NP scenarios in which new FCNC currents in b->s mu^+ mu^- transitions are mediated either entirely by a neutral heavy gauge boson Z' with purely LH complex couplings Delta_L^{qb}(Z') (q=d,s) and couplings to muons Delta_A^{mu mu}(Z') and Delta_V^{mu mu}(Z') or the SM Z boson with LH complex couplings Delta_L^{qb}(Z). We demonstrate how these couplings can be determined by future Delta F=2 and b->s mu^+ mu^- observables. The correlations between various observables can test these NP scenarios. We present the results as functions of Delta M_q/Delta M_q^SM, S_{psi phi} and S_{psi K_S} which should be precisely determined in this decade. We calculate the violation of the CMFV relation between BR(B_{s,d}-> mu^+ mu^-) and Delta M_{s,d} in these scenarios. We find that the data on B_{s,d}->mu^+ mu^- from CMS and LHCb can be reproduced in both scenarios but in the case of Z, Delta M_s and S_{psi phi} have to be very close to their SM values. As far as B_d->K^*mu^+mu^- anomalies are concerned the Z' scenario can significantly soften these anomalies while the Z boson fails because of the small vector coupling to muons. We also point out that recent proposals of explaining these anomalies with the help of a real Wilson coefficient C^NP_9 implies uniquely an enhancement of Delta M_s with respect to its SM value, while a complex C^NP_9 allows for both enhancement and suppression of Delta M_s and simultaneously novel CP-violating effects. We also discuss briefly scenarios in which the Z' boson has RH FCNC couplings. In this context we point out a number of correlations between angular observables measured in B_d->K^*mu^+ mu^- that arise in the absence of new CP-violating phases in scenarios with only LH or RH couplings or scenarios in which LH and RH couplings are equal to each other or differ by sign.

On the Correlations between Flavour Observables in Minimal U(2)^3 Models

The stringent correlations between flavour observables in models with CMFV are consistent with the present data except for the correlation Delta M_{s,d}-epsilon_K. Motivated by the recent work of Barbieri et al, we compare the CMFV correlations with the ones present in a special class of models with an approximate global U(2)^3 flavour symmetry, constrained by a minimal set of spurions governing the breakdown of this symmetry and the assumption that only SM operators are relevant in flavour physics. This analog of CMFV to be called MU(2)^3 allows to avoid the Delta M_{s,d}-epsilon_K tension in question because of reduced flavour symmetry and implied non-MFV contributions to Delta M_{s,d}. While the patterns of flavour violation in K meson system is the same as in CMFV models, the CP-violation in B_{s,d} meson systems can deviate from the one in the SM and CMFV models. We point out a stringent triple S_{psi K_S}-S_{psi phi}-|V_ub| correlation in this class of models that could in the future provide a transparent distinction between different MU(2)^3 models and in the context of these models determine |V_ub| by means of precise measurements of S_{psi K_S} and S_{psi phi} with only small hadronic uncertainties. For fixed S_{psi K_S} the correlation between B(B^+ -> tau^+nu_tau) and S_{psi phi} follows. We also find that MU(2)^3 models could in principle accommodate a negative value of S_{psi phi}, provided |V_ub| is found to be in the ballpark of exclusive determinations and the particular MU(2)^3 model provides a 25% enhancement of epsilon_K. A supersymmetric U(2)^3 model worked out in the Barbieri-School appears to satisfy these requirements. However if B(B^+ -> tau^+nu_tau)>1.0 10^{-4} will be confirmed by future experiments only positive S_{psi phi} is allowed in this framework. We summarize briefly the pattern of flavour violation in rare K and B_{s,d} decays in MU(2)^3 models.

Particle-Antiparticle Mixing, CP Violation and Rare K and B Decays in a Minimal Theory of Fermion Masses

We present a detailed study of Delta F=2 observables and of rare K^+(K_L) and B_{s,d} meson decays in a "Minimal Theory of Fermion Masses" (MTFM). In this theory Yukawa couplings are generated through the mixing with heavy vectorlike (VF) fermions. This implies corrections to the SM quark couplings to W, Z and Higgs so that FCNC processes receive contributions from tree level Z and Higgs exchanges and W bosons couple to right-handed quarks. In a particular version of this model in which the Yukawa matrix lambda^D in the heavy down fermion sector is unitary, lambda^U =1 and M = M_{VF} is fixed, only three real and positive definite parameters describe New Physics (NP) contributions to all Delta F=2 and Delta F=1 observables in K and B_{s,d} systems once the known quark masses and the CKM matrix are correctly reproduced. For M>1 TeV NP contributions to B_{s,d}^0- bar{B}_{s,d}^0 mixings are found to be very small. While in principle NP contributions to epsilon_K and Delta F=1 processes could be large, the correlation between epsilon_K and K_L->mu^+ mu^- eliminates basically NP contributions to epsilon_K and right-handed current contributions to Delta F=1 FCNC observables. We find CMFV structure in B_{s,d} decays with BR(B_{s,d}->mu^+ mu^-) uniquely enhanced for M=3 TeV by at least 35% and almost up to a factor of two over their SM values. Also BR(K^+->pi^+ bar{nu} nu) and BR(K_L->pi^0 bar{nu} nu)$ are uniquely enhanced by similar amount but the correlation between them differs from the CMFV one. We emphasize various correlations between K and B_{s,d} decays that could test this scenario. The model favours gamma=68°, |V_{ub}|=0.0037, S_{psi K_S}=0.72, S_{psi phi}=0.04 and 4.2*10^-9<BR(B_s->mu^+ mu^-)<5.0*10^-9 for M=3-4 TeV.

Probing New Physics with the B_s to μ+ μ- Time-Dependent Rate

The B_s to mu+ mu- decay plays an outstanding role in tests of the Standard Model and physics beyond it. The LHCb collaboration has recently reported the first evidence for this decay at the 3.5 sigma level, with a branching ratio in the ballpark of the Standard Model prediction. Thanks to the recently established sizable decay width difference of the B_s system, another observable, A^mumu_DeltaGamma, is available, which can be extracted from the time-dependent untagged B_s to mu+ mu- rate. If tagging information is available, a CP-violating asymmetry, S_mumu, can also be determined. These two observables exhibit sensitivity to New Physics that is complementary to the branching ratio. We define and analyse scenarios in which these quantities allow us to discriminate between model-independent effective operators and their CP-violating phases. In this context we classify a selection of popular New Physics models into the considered scenarios. Furthermore, we consider specific models with tree-level FCNCs mediated by a heavy neutral gauge boson, pseudoscalar or scalar, finding striking differences in the predictions of these scenarios for the observables considered and the correlations among them. We update the Standard Model prediction for the time-integrated branching ratio taking the subtle decay width difference effects into account. We find (3.56 +/- 0.18) x 10^-9, and discuss the error budget.

Stringent Tests of Constrained Minimal Flavour Violation through Delta F=2 Transitions

New Physics contributions to Delta F=2 transitions in models with constrained Minimal Flavour Violation (CMFV), are parametrized by a single variable S(v), the value of the real box diagram function. With already precise experimental values of epsilon_K, Delta M_d, Delta M_s, CP-asymmetry S_{psi K_S} and of hat{B}_K entering the evaluation of epsilon_K, the future of CMFV in the Delta F=2 sector depends crucially on the values of |Vcb|, |Vub|, gamma, F_{B_s} sqrt{hat B_{B_s}} and F_{B_d} sqrt{hat B_{B_d}}. The ratio xi of the latter two parameters, rather precisely determined from lattice calculations, allows then together with Delta M_s/Delta M_d and S_{psi K_S} to determine the range of gamma in the unitarity triangle independently of the value of S(v). Imposing in addition the constraints from epsilon_K and Delta M_d allows to determine the favorite CMFV values of |Vcb|, |Vub|, F_{B_s} sqrt{hat B_{B_s}} and F_{B_d} sqrt{hat B_{B_d}} as functions of S(v) and gamma. The |Vcb|^4 dependence of epsilon_K allows to determine |Vcb| for a given S(v) and gamma with a higher precision than it is presently possible using tree-level decays. The same applies to |Vub|, |Vtd| and |Vts| that are automatically determined as functions of S(v) and gamma. Typically F_{B_s}sqrt{hat B_{B_s}} and F_{B_d} sqrt{hat B_{B_d}} have to be significantly lower than their present lattice values, while |Vcb| has to be significantly higher than its tree-level determination. The region in the space of these three parameters allowed by CMFV indicates visible problems in this class of models and hints for the presence of new sources of flavour violation and/or new local operators in Delta F=2 data that are strongly suppressed in these models. As a byproduct we propose to reduce the present uncertainty in the charm contribution toepsilon_K by using the experimental value of Delta M_K.

The Anatomy of Neutral Scalars with FCNCs in the Flavour Precision Era

In many extensions of the Standard Model flavour changing neutral current processes can be mediated by tree-level heavy neutral scalars and/or pseudo-scalars H^0(A^0). This generally introduces new sources of flavour violation and CP violation as well as left-handed and right-handed scalar currents. These new physics contributions imply a pattern of deviations from SM expectations for FCNC processes that depends only on the couplings of H^0(A^0) to fermions and on their masses. In situations in which a single H^0 or A^0 dominates NP contributions stringent correlations between Delta F=2 and Delta F=1 observables exist. Anticipating the Flavour Precision Era ahead of us we illustrate this by searching for allowed oases in the landscape of a given model assuming significantly smaller uncertainties in CKM and hadronic parameters than presently available. To this end we analyze Delta F=2 observables in B^0_{s,d}-bar B^0_{s,d} and K^0-bar K^0 systems and rare B and K decays with charged leptons in the final state including both left-handed and right-handed scalar couplings of H^0 and A^0 to quarks in various combinations. We identify a number of correlations between various flavour observables that could test and distinguish these different scenarios. The prominent role of the decays B_{s,d}-> mu^+ mu^- in these studies is emphasized. Imposing the existing flavour constraints, a rich pattern of deviations from the SM expectations in rare B_{s,d} decays emerges provided M_H< 1 TeV. NP effects in rare K decays are very small. Neutral SM Higgs contributions to rare B and K decays turn out to be negligible once the constraints from Delta F=2 processes are taken into account. Finally, we point out striking differences between the correlations found here and in scenarios in which tree-level FCNC are mediated by a new neutral gauge boson Z'.

The Anatomy of Z' and Z with Flavour Changing Neutral Currents in the Flavour Precision Era

The simplest extension of the SM that generally introduces new sources of flavour and CP violation as well as right-handed currents is the addition of a U(1) gauge symmetry to the SM gauge group. If the corresponding heavy gauge boson Z' mediates FCNC processes in the quark sector at tree-level, these new physics contributions imply a pattern of deviations from SM expectations for FCNC processes depending only on Z' couplings to fermions and on its mass. This implies stringent correlations between Delta F=2 and Delta F=1 observables which govern the landscape of the allowed parameter space for Z'-models. Anticipating the Flavour Precision Era (FPE) ahead of us we illustrate this by searching for allowed oases in this landscape assuming significantly smaller uncertainties in CKM and hadronic parameters than presently available. To this end we analyze Delta F=2 observables in K^0-bar K^0 and B^0_{s,d}-bar B^0_{s,d} systems and rare K and B decays including both left-handed and right-handed Z'-couplings to quarks in various combinations. We identify a number of correlations between various flavour observables that could test and distinguish these different Z' scenarios. The important role of b->s l^+ l^- and b->s nu bar nu transitions in these studies is emphasized. Imposing the existing flavour constraints, a rich pattern of deviations from the SM expectations in B_{s,d} and K meson systems emerges provided M_Z'<3 TeV. While for M_Z'>5 TeV Z' effects in rare B_{s,d} decays are found typically below 10% and hard to measure even in the FPE, K->pi nu bar nu and K_L-> pi^0 l^+ l^- decays provide an important portal to scales beyond those explored by the LHC. We apply our formalism to NP scenarios with induced flavour changing neutral Z-couplings to quarks. We find that in the case of B_d and K decays, but not B_s decays, such Z-couplings still allow for sizable departures from the SM.

Towards the Identification of New Physics through Correlations between Flavour Observables

We emphasize the power of correlations between flavour observables in the search for New Physics and identify a number of correlations that could allow to discover New Physics even if it would appear at the level of 20% of the Standard Model contributions. After presenting the simplest correlations in CMFV and U(2)^3 models we address the recent data on B_{s,d}->mu^+ mu^- and the anomalies in B_d -> K^* mu^+ mu^- in the context of Z'-models and SM Z, both with flavour violating neutral couplings. A strategy consisting of twelve steps which concentrate on theoretically clean observables, to be measured in this decade, could one day allow us to reach the Zeptouniverse. The related DNA charts based on the correlations between enhancements and supressions of various observables in a given New Physics scenario relative to the Standard Model predictions allow a transparent distinction between various extensions of this model. The present text is the extended version of the talk to be published in the proceedings of this symposium.

BSM models facing the recent LHCb data: A first look

During last decade a number of detailed analyses of flavour observables and of their correlations within more than a dozen specific BSM models have been performed at the TUM. One of the goals of these analyses was to investigate which model is capable of obtaining large mixing induced CP asymmetry in the B_s system, S_{psi phi}, and to find out what this would imply for other flavour observables. In this context also the rare decays B_{s,d}->mu^+ mu^- have been considered. In some models their branching ratios can be enhanced by orders of magnitude above the SM expectations. The recent data on S_{psi phi} and B_{s,d}-> mu^+ mu^- from the LHCb put an end to these very optimistic hopes modifying significantly the allowed patterns of deviations from SM predictions for flavour observables in concrete BSM models. We make a first semi-quantitative assessment of the most important modifications in the predictions of the BSM models in question including also recently analyzed models and taking into account the most recent lattice input. For some BSM models the LHCb data turned out to be a relief. On the other hand the SM, models with CMFV and MFV models without flavour blind phases appear to have significant difficulties in describing all Delta F=2 observables in B_{s,d} and K^0 meson systems simultaneously. We propose to regard the stringent CMFV relations between various observables as standard candels of flavour physics. The pattern of deviations from these relations may help in identifying the correct NP scenario.

Complete NLO QCD Corrections for Tree Level Delta F = 2 FCNC Processes

Anticipating the important role of tree level FCNC processes in the indirect search for new physics at distance scales as short as 10^-19-10^-21 m, we present complete NLO QCD corrections to tree level Delta F=2 processes mediated by heavy colourless gauge bosons and scalars. Such contributions can be present at the fundamental level when GIM mechanism is absent as in numerous Z' models, gauged flavour models with new heavy neutral gauge bosons and Left-Right symmetric models with heavy neutral scalars. They can also be generated at one loop in models having GIM at the fundamental level and MFV of which Two-Higgs Doublet models with and without SUSY are the best known examples. In models containing vectorial heavy fermions that mix with the standard chiral quarks and models in which Z and SM neutral Higgs H mix with new heavy gauge bosons and scalars also tree-level Z and SM neutral Higgs contributions to Delta F=2 processes are possible. In all these extensions new local operators are generated having Wilson coefficients that are generally much stronger affected by RG QCD effects than it is the case of the SM operators. The new aspect of our work is the calculation of O(alpha_s) corrections to matching conditions for the Wilson coefficients of the contributing operators in the NDR-MS scheme that can be used in all models listed above. This allows to reduce certain unphysical scale and renormalization scheme dependences in the existing NLO calculations. We show explicitly how our results can be combined with the analytic formulae for the P_i^a QCD factors that include both hadronic matrix elements of contributing operators and RG evolution from high energy to low energy scales. For the masses of heavy gauge bosons and scalars O(1)TeV the remaining unphysical scale dependences for the mixing amplitudes are reduced typically from 10-25%, depending on the operator considered, down to 1-2%.

Completing NLO QCD Corrections for Tree Level Non-Leptonic Delta F = 1 Decays Beyond the Standard Model

In various extensions of the Standard Model (SM) tree level non-leptonic decays of hadrons receive contributions from new heavy gauge bosons and scalars. Prominent examples are the right-handed W' bosons in left-right symmetric models and charged Higgs (H^\pm) particles in models with extended scalar sector like two Higgs doublet models and supersymmetric models. Even in the case of decays with four different quark flavours involved, to which penguin operators cannot contribute, twenty linearly independent operators, instead of two in the SM, have to be considered. Anticipating the important role of such decays at the LHCb, KEKB and Super-B in Rome and having in mind future improved lattice computations, we complete the existing NLO QCD formulae for these processes by calculating O(alpha_s) corrections to matching conditions for the Wilson coefficients of all contributing operators in the NDR-\bar{MS} scheme. This allows to reduce certain unphysical scale and renormalization scheme dependences in the existing NLO calculations. Our results can also be applied to models with tree-level heavy neutral gauge boson and scalar exchanges in Delta F = 1 transitions and constitute an important part of NLO analyses of those non-leptonic decays to which also penguin operators contribute.

Delta F = 2 observables and B -> X_q gamma decays in the Left-Right Model: Higgs particles striking back

We present a complete study of Delta S = 2 and Delta B = 2 processes in the left-right model (LRM) based on the weak gauge group SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R x U(1)_{B-L}. This includes epsilon_K, Delta M_K, Delta M_q, A_{SL}^q, Delta Gamma_q with q=d,s and the CP asymmetries S_{psi K_S} and S_{psi phi}. Compared to the Standard Model (SM) these observables are affected by tree level contributions from heavy neutral Higgs particles (H^0) as well as new box diagrams with W_R gauge boson and charged Higgs (H^\pm) exchanges. We also analyse the B -> X_{s,d} gamma decays that receive important new contributions from the W_L-W_R mixing and H^\pm exchanges. Compared to the existing literature the novel feature of our analysis is the search for correlations between various observables that could help us to distinguish this model from other extensions of the SM and to obtain an insight into the structure of the mixing matrix V^R that governs right-handed currents. We find that even for M_{H^0} ~ M_{H^\pm} ~ O(20)TeV, the tree level H^0 contributions to Delta F = 2 observables are by far dominant and the H^\pm contributions to B -> X_q gamma can be very important, even dominant for certain parameters of the model. While in a large fraction of the parameter space this model has to struggle with the experimental constraint from epsilon_K, we demonstrate that there exist regions in parameter space which satisfy all existing Delta F = 2, B -> X_{s,d} gamma, tree level decays and electroweak precision constraints for scales M_{W_R}\simeq2-3TeV in the reach of the LHC. We also show that the S_{psi K_S} - epsilon_K tension present in the SM can be removed in the LRM. However, we point out that the LRM cannot help in explaining the difference between the inclusive and exclusive determinations of |V_{ub}|, when all constraints are taken into account. Finally we present a rather complete list of Feynman rules.

On the Standard Model prediction for BR(B{s,d} to mu+ mu-)

The decay Bs to mu+ mu- is one of the milestones of the flavor program at the LHC. We reappraise its Standard Model prediction. First, by analyzing the theoretical rate in the light of its main parametric dependence, we highlight the importance of a complete evaluation of higher-order electroweak corrections, at present known only in the large-mt limit, and leaving sizable dependence on the definition of electroweak parameters. Using insights from a complete calculation of such corrections for K to pi bar{nu} nu decays, we find a scheme in which NLO electroweak corrections are likely to be negligible. Second, we address the issue of the correspondence between the initial and the final state detected by the experiments, and those used in the theoretical prediction. Particular attention is devoted to the effect of the soft radiation, that has not been discussed for this mode in the previous literature, and that can lead to O(10%) corrections to the decay rate. The "non-radiative" branching ratio (that is equivalent to the branching ratio fully inclusive of bremsstrahlung radiation) is estimated to be (3.23 +/- 0.27) x 10^{-9} for the flavor eigenstate, with the main uncertainty resulting from the value of f_{Bs}, followed by the uncertainty due to higher order electroweak corrections. Applying the same strategy to Bd to mu+ mu-, we find for its non-radiative branching ratio (1.07 +/- 0.10) x 10^{-10}.

Phenomenology of a Gauged SU(3)^3 Flavour Model

We present an extensive analysis of Delta F=2 observables and of B -> X_s gamma in the framework of a specific Maximally Gauged Flavour (MGF) model of Grinstein et al. including all relevant contributions, in particular tree-level heavy gauge boson exchanges that are considered in the present paper for the first time. The model allows in principle for significant deviations from the Standard Model predictions for epsilon_K, Delta M_{B_{d,s}}, mixing induced CP-asymmetries S_{psi K_S} and S_{psi phi} and B -> X_s gamma decay. The tension between epsilon_K and S_{psi K_S} present in the SM can be removed by enhancing |epsilon_K| without modifying S_{psi K_S}. In this case, we find that in this model i) the results for S_{psi phi} and B -> X_s gamma turn out to be SM-like, ii) the exclusive determination of |Vub| is favoured and most importantly iii) the values of Delta M_{B_d} and Delta M_{B_s} being strongly correlated in this model with epsilon_K turn out to be much larger than the data for the central values of input parameters: Delta M_{B_d}~0.75/ps and Delta M_{B_s}~27/ps. Therefore, from the present perspective, the model suffers from a serious epsilon_K-Delta M_{B_{d,s}} tension. However, this tension can be softened considering theoretical and parametric uncertainties and in particular the decrease of the weak decay constants. On the other side, the model can be strongly constrained considering the theoretically cleaner ratios Delta M_{B_d}/Delta M_{B_s} and BR(B^+ -> tau^+ nu)/Delta M_{B_d} and we find that it is unable to remove simultaneously all the SM tensions on the data. Finally, we compare the pattern of flavour violation in MGF with selected extensions of the SM.

The Anatomy of Quark Flavour Observables in 331 Models in the Flavour Precision Era

The coming flavour precision era will allow to uncover various patterns of flavour violation in different New Physics (NP) scenarios that are presently washed out by hadronic and experimental uncertainties. We illustrate this by performing the anatomy of flavour violation in the 331 models, based on the gauge group SU(3)_C X SU(3)_L X U(1)_X that are among the simplest NP scenarios with new sources of flavour and CP violation. The latter originate dominantly through the flavour violating interactions of ordinary quarks and leptons with a new heavy Z' gauge boson. After discussing first these models in some generality, we present a detailed study of Delta F=2 observables and of rare K and B meson decays in the specific beta=1/\sqrt{3} model (to be called overline{331} model) assuming significantly smaller uncertainties in CKM and hadronic parameters than presently available. The most prominent roles in our analysis play epsilon_K, Delta M_q (q=d,s), the mixing induced CP asymmetries S_{psi K_S} and S_{psi phi}, rare decays B_{s,d}-> mu^+ mu^- and in particular the CP-asymmetry S_{mu^+ mu^-}^s in B_s ->mu^+ mu^-. We identify a number of correlations between various observables that differ from those known from CMFV models. While, the Delta F=2 observables allow still for four oases in the new parameter space, we demonstrate how the inclusion of Delta F=1 observables can in the future identify the optimal oasis for this model. For 1 TeV <= M_{Z'}<= 3 TeV the overline{331} model is in good agreement with the recent data for B^+->tau^+ nu_tau, it removes the epsilon_K-S_{psi K_S} tension present in the SM and the epsilon_K-Delta M_{s,d} tension present in CMFV models. Simultaneously, while differing from the SM, it is consistent with the present data on BR(B_{s,d}->mu^+ mu^-) and S_{psi phi}. We identify the triple correlation BR(B_s->mu^+ mu^-)-S_{psi phi}-S_{mu^+ mu^-}^s.

The Impact of Flavour Changing Neutral Gauge Bosons on B->X_s gamma

The branching ratio of the rare decay B->X_s gamma provides potentially strong constraints on models beyond the Standard Model. Considering a general scenario with new heavy neutral gauge bosons, present in particular in Z' and gauge flavour models, we point out two new contributions to the B->X_s gamma decay. The first one originates from one-loop diagrams mediated by gauge bosons and heavy exotic quarks with electric charge -1/3. The second contribution stems from the QCD mixing of neutral current-current operators generated by heavy neutral gauge bosons and the dipole operators responsible for the B->X_s gamma decay. The latter mixing is calculated here for the first time. We discuss general sum rules which have to be satisfied in any model of this type. We emphasise that the neutral gauge bosons in question could also significantly affect other fermion radiative decays as well as non-leptonic two-body B decays, epsilon'/epsilon, anomalous (g-2)_mu and electric dipole moments.

FCNC Effects in a Minimal Theory of Fermion Masses

As a minimal theory of fermion masses we extend the SM by heavy vectorlike fermions, with flavor-anarchical Yukawa couplings, that mix with chiral fermions such that small SM Yukawa couplings arise from small mixing angles. This model can be regarded as an effective description of the fermionic sector of a large class of existing flavor models and thus might serve as a useful reference frame for a further understanding of flavor hierarchies in the SM. Already such a minimal framework gives rise to FCNC effects through exchange of massive SM bosons whose couplings to the light fermions get modified by the mixing. We derive general formulae for these corrections and discuss the bounds on the heavy fermion masses. Particularly stringent bounds, in a few TeV range, come from the corrections to the Z couplings.

Flavour Visions

This decade will allow to improve the resolution of the short distance scales by at least an order of magnitude, extending the picture of fundamental physics down to scales $5\cdot 10^{-20}$m with the help of the LHC. Further resolution down to scales as short as $10^{-21}$m should be possible with the help of high precision experiments in which flavour violating processes will play a prominent role. Will this increase in resolution allow us to see new particles (new animalcula) similarly to what Antoni van Leeuvenhoek saw by discovering bacteria in 1676? The basic question for particle physics is how these new animalcula will look like and which difficulties of the Standard Model (SM) they will help us to solve and which new puzzles and problems they will bring with them. I will describe what role flavour physics will play in these exciting times provided this new world is animalculated.

Minimal flavour violation and beyond: Towards a flavour code for short distance dynamics

This decade should provide the first definitive signals of New Physics (NP) beyond the Standard Model (SM) and the goal of these lectures is a review of flavour physics in various extensions of the SM that have been popular in the last ten years. After an overture, two pilot sections and a brief summary of the structure of flavour violation and CP violation in the SM, we will present the theoretical framework for weak decays that will allow us to distinguish between different NP scenarios. Subsequently we will present twelve concrete BSM models summarizing the patterns of flavour violation characteristic for each model. In addition to models with minimal flavour violation (MFV) accompanied by flavour blind phases we will discuss a number of extensions containing non-MFV sources of flavour and CP violation and, in particular, new local operators originating in right-handed charged currents and scalar currents. Next we will address various anomalies in the data as seen from the point of view of the SM that appear very natural in certain extensions of the SM. In this presentation selected superstars of this field will play a very important role. These are processes that are very sensitive to NP effects and which are theoretically clean. Particular emphasis will be put on correlations between various observables that could allow us to distinguish between various NP scenarios. Armed with this knowledge we will propose a coding system in a form of a 3*3 matrix which helps to distinguish between various extensions of the SM. Finding which flavour code is chosen by nature would be an important step towards the fundamental theory of flavour. We give several examples of flavour codes representing specific models.

Symmetries and Asymmetries of B -> K* mu+ mu- Decays in the Standard Model and Beyond

The rare decay B -> K* (-> K pi) mu+ mu- is regarded as one of the crucial channels for B physics as the polarization of the K* allows a precise angular reconstruction resulting in many observables that offer new important tests of the Standard Model and its extensions. These angular observables can be expressed in terms of CP-conserving and CP-violating quantities which we study in terms of the full form factors calculated from QCD sum rules on the light-cone, including QCD factorization corrections. We investigate all observables in the context of the Standard Model and various New Physics models, in particular the Littlest Higgs model with T-parity and various MSSM scenarios, identifying those observables with small to moderate dependence on hadronic quantities and large impact of New Physics. One important result of our studies is that new CP-violating phases will produce clean signals in CP-violating asymmetries. We also identify a number of correlations between various observables which will allow a clear distinction between different New Physics scenarios.

A Lower Bound on hadronic EDMs from CP Violation in D0-D0bar mixing in SUSY Alignment Models

The SM predictions for CP violating effects in D meson systems are highly suppressed at the per mill level. Therefore, any experimental evidence for a sizable CP violation in D0-D0bar mixing would unambiguously point towards a New Physics (NP) signal. Within supersymmetric scenarios, the popular alignment models can naturally account for large, non-standard effects in D0-D0bar mixing. We demonstrate that, within alignment models, detectable CP violating effects in D0-D0bar mixing would unambiguously imply a lower bound for the electric dipole moment (EDM) of hadronic systems, like the neutron EDM and the mercury EDM, in the reach of future experimental sensitivities. The simultaneous evidence of CP violation in D meson systems together with non vanishing hadronic EDMs would strongly support the idea of SUSY alignment models and disfavour gauge-mediated SUSY breaking models, SUSY models with MFV and non-Abelian SUSY flavour models. As a byproduct of our analysis, we study the correlation between the time dependent CP asymmetry in decays to CP eigenstates S_f and the semileptonic asymmetry a_SL both model independently and in SUSY alignment models.

Charged Lepton Flavour Violation and (g-2)_mu in the Littlest Higgs Model with T-Parity: a clear Distinction from Supersymmetry

We calculate the rates for the charged lepton flavour violating decays l_i -> l_j gamma, tau -> l pi, tau -> l eta, tau -> l eta', mu^- -> e^- e^+ e^-, the six three body leptonic decays tau^- -> l_i^- l_j^+ l_k^- and the rate for mu-e conversion in nuclei in the Littlest Higgs model with T-Parity (LHT). We also calculate the rates for K_{L,S} -> mu e, K_{L,S} -> pi^0 mu e and B_{d,s} -> l_i l_j. We find that the relative effects of mirror leptons in these transitions are by many orders of magnitude larger than analogous mirror quark effects in rare K and B decays analyzed recently. In particular, in order to suppress the mu -> e gamma and mu^- -> e^- e^+ e^- decay rates and the mu-e conversion rate below the experimental upper bounds, the relevant mixing matrix in the mirror lepton sector V_Hl must be rather hierarchical, unless the spectrum of mirror leptons is quasi-degenerate. We find that the pattern of the LFV branching ratios in the LHT model differs significantly from the one encountered in the MSSM, allowing in a transparent manner to distinguish these two models with the help of LFV processes. We also calculate (g-2)_mu and find the new contributions to a_mu below 10^{-10} and consequently negligible. We compare our results with those present in the literature.

Correlations between epsilon'/epsilon and Rare K Decays in the Littlest Higgs Model with T-Parity

We calculate the CP-violating ratio epsilon'/epsilon in the Littlest Higgs model with T-parity (LHT) and investigate its correlations with the branching ratios for K_L -> pi^0 nu {bar nu}, K_L -> pi^0 l^+ l^- and K^+ -> pi^+ nu {bar nu}. The resulting correlations are rather strong in the case of K_L decays, but less pronounced in the case of K^+ -> pi^+ nu {bar nu}. Unfortunately, they are subject to large hadronic uncertainties present in epsilon'/epsilon, whose theoretical prediction in the Standard Model (SM) is reviewed and updated here. With the matrix elements of Q_6 (gluon penguin) and Q_8 (electroweak penguin) evaluated in the large-N limit and m_s^MS(2 GeV) = 100 MeV from lattice QCD, (epsilon'/epsilon)_SM turns out to be close to the data so that significant departures of Br(K_L -> pi^0 nu {bar nu}) and Br(K_L -> pi^0 l^+ l^-) from the SM expectations are unlikely, while Br(K^+ -> pi^+ nu {bar nu}) can be enhanced even by a factor 5. On the other hand, modest departures of the relevant hadronic matrix elements from their large-N values allow for a consistent description of epsilon'/epsilon within the LHT model accompanied by large enhancements of Br(K_L -> pi^0 nu {bar nu}) and Br(K_L -> pi^0 l^+ l^-), but only modest enhancements of Br(K^+ -> pi^+ nu {bar nu}).

EDMs vs. CPV in B_{s,d} mixing in two Higgs doublet models with MFV

We analyze the correlations between electric dipole moments (EDMs) of the neutron and heavy atoms and CP violation in B_{s,d} mixing in two Higgs doublet models respecting the Minimal Flavour Violation hypothesis, with flavour-blind CP-violating (CPV) phases. In particular, we consider the case of flavour-blind CPV phases from i) the Yukawa interactions and ii) the Higgs potential. We show that in both cases the upper bounds on the above EDMs do not forbid sizable non-standard CPV effects in B_s mixing. However, if a large CPV phase in B_s mixing will be confirmed, this will imply EDMs very close to their present experimental bounds, within the reach of the next generation of experiments, as well as BR(B_{s,d}-> mu^+ mu^-) typically largely enhanced over its SM expectation. The two flavour-blind CPV mechanisms can be distinguished through the correlation between S_psi K_S and S_psi phi that is strikingly different if only one of them is relevant. Which of these two CPV mechanisms dominates depends on the precise values of S_psi phi and S_psi K_S, as well as on the CKM phase (as determined by tree-level processes). Current data seems to show a mild preference for a hybrid scenario where both these mechanisms are at work.

FCNC Processes in the Littlest Higgs Model with T-Parity: an Update

We update our 2006-2007 results for FCNC processes in the Littlest Higgs model with T-parity (LHT). The removal of the logarithmic UV cutoff dependence in our previous results through a new contribution to the Z^0-penguin diagrams identified by Goto et al. and del Aguila et al., while making the deviations from the SM expectations in the quark sector less spectacular, still allows for sizable new physics effects in K -> pi nu anti-nu and K_L -> pi^0 l^+ l^- decays and in the CP-asymmetry S_{psi phi} with the latter unaffected by the new contribution. We extend our analysis by a study of the fine-tuning required to fit the data on epsilon_K and by the inclusion of the decay K_L -> mu^+ mu^-. A number of correlations can distinguish this model from the custodially protected Randall-Sundrum model analysed recently. We also reconsider lepton flavour violating decays, including now a discussion of fine-tuning. While the l_i -> l_j gamma decays are unaffected by the removal of the logarithmic cutoff dependence, the branching ratios for decays with three leptons in the final state, like mu -> 3 e are lowered by almost an order of magnitude. In spite of this, the pattern of lepton flavour violation in the LHT model can still be distinguished from the one in supersymmetric models.

Footprints of SUSY GUTs in Flavour Physics

Supersymmetric (SUSY) Grand Unified theories (GUTs) generally predict FCNC and CP violating processes to occur both in the leptonic and hadronic sectors. Assuming an underlying SU(5) group plus right-handed neutrinos (RN), we perform an extensive study of FCNC and CP violation, analyzing the correlations between leptonic and hadronic processes like mu-> e gamma and K-Kbar mixing, tau->mu gamma and b -> s transitions such as B_d -> phi K_s and Bs-Bsbar mixing. Moreover, we examine the impact of the considered scenario on the UT analyses, monitoring the low energy consequences implied by possible solutions to the various tensions in the present UT analyses. We compare the phenomenological implications of this NP scenario with the ones of supersymmetric flavour models finding a few striking differences that could allow to distinguish these different NP models.

Higgs-mediated FCNCs: Natural Flavour Conservation vs. Minimal Flavour Violation

We compare the effectiveness of two hypotheses, Natural Flavour Conservation (NFC) and Minimal Flavour Violation (MFV), in suppressing the strength of flavour-changing neutral-currents (FCNCs) in models with more than one Higgs doublet. We show that the MFV hypothesis, in its general formulation, is more stable in suppressing FCNCs than the hypothesis of NFC alone when quantum corrections are taken into account. The phenomenological implications of the two scenarios are discussed analysing meson-antimeson mixing observables and the rare decays B -> mu+ mu-. We demonstrate that, introducing flavour-blind CP phases, two-Higgs doublet models respecting the MFV hypothesis can accommodate a large CP-violating phase in Bs mixing, as hinted by CDF and D0 data and, without extra free parameters, soften significantly in a correlated manner the observed anomaly in the relation between epsilon_K and S_psi_K.

We calculate the rates for the charged lepton flavour violating (LFV) decays l_i -> l_j gamma, tau -> l pi, tau -> l eta('), mu^- -> e^-e^+e^-, the six three-body leptonic decays tau^- -> l_i^- l_j^+ l_k^- and the rate for mu-e conversion in nuclei in the Standard Model (SM3) extended by a fourth generation of quarks and leptons (SM4), assuming that neutrinos are Dirac particles. We also calculate branching ratios for K_L -> mu e, K_L -> pi^0 mu e, B_{d,s} -> mu e, B_{d,s} -> tau e and B_{d,s} -> tau mu. We find that the pattern of the LFV branching ratios in the SM4 differs significantly from the one encountered in the MSSM, allowing to distinguish these two models with the help of LFV processes in a transparent manner. Also differences with respect to the Littlest Higgs model with T-parity are found. Most importantly the branching ratios for l_i -> l_j gamma, tau -> l pi, tau -> l eta('), mu^- -> e^-e^+e^-, tau^- -> e^-e^+e^-, tau^- -> mu^- mu^+ mu^-, tau^- -> e^- mu^+ mu^- and tau^- -> mu^- e^+ e^- can all still be as large as the present experimental upper bounds but not necessarily simultaneously. Also the rate for mu-e conversion in nuclei can reach the corresponding upper bound.

Littlest Higgs Model with T-Parity Confronting the New Data on D^0-\bar D^0 Mixing

Motivated by the first experimental evidence of meson oscillations in the D system, we study D^0 - \bar D^0 mixing in the Littlest Higgs model with T-parity, we investigate its role in constraining the model parameters and its impact on the most interesting flavour observables. We find that the experimental data are potentially strongly constraining but at present limited by large theoretical uncertainties in the long-distance Standard Model contribution to D^0 - \bar D^0 mixing.

On epsilon_K beyond lowest order in the Operator Product Expansion

We analyse the structure of long distance (LD) contributions to the CP-violating parameter epsilon_K, that generally affect both the absorptive (Gamma_12) and the dispersive (M_12) parts of the K0 -- K0bar mixing amplitude. We point out that, in a consistent framework, in addition to LD contributions to Im(Gamma_12), estimated recently by two of us, also LD contributions to Im(M_12) have to be taken into account. Estimating the latter contributions the impact of LD effects on epsilon_K is significantly reduced (from -6.0 % to -3.6 %). The overall effect of LD corrections and of the superweak phase being different from 45 degrees is summarised by the multiplicative factor kappa_epsilon = 0.94 +/- 0.02.

Patterns of Flavour Violation in the Presence of a Fourth Generation of Quarks and Leptons

We calculate a number of observables related to particle-antiparticle mixing and the branching ratios for the most interesting rare and CP-violating K and B decays in the Standard Model (SM3) extended by a fourth generation of quarks and leptons (SM4). A model-independent parameterisation of these observables in terms of gauge-independent functions is adopted, which is useful for studying the breaking of the universality between K, Bd and Bs systems through non-minimal flavour violating interactions. We calculate first the mass differences Delta M_i in the neutral K and B system, the mixing-induced CP asymmetries S_{psi K_S}, S_{psi phi}, S_{phi K_S}, S_{eta' K_S} and epsilon_K. Subsequently, a detailed analysis of K^+ -> pi^+ nu nu, K_L -> pi^0 nu nu, B_{s,d} -> mu^+ mu^-, B -> X_{s,d} nu nu, K_L -> pi^0 l^+ l^-, B -> X_s gamma and B -> X_{s,d} l^+ l^- is presented, and also epsilon'/epsilon is considered. For some of these observables the departures from SM3 predictions can still be spectacular. We discuss how the new mixing parameters (3 angles, 2 CP phases) can be determined using the flavour observables in question. We identify the different hierarchical structures in the SM4 flavour mixing matrix, allowed by phenomenological and theoretical constraints, and define the corresponding generalised Wolfenstein expansion. Most importantly, we show how the characteristic patterns of correlations among the considered flavour observables allow to distinguish this New Physics scenario from supersymmetric flavour models, the Littlest Higgs model with T-parity and the Randall-Sundrum model with custodial protection.

Rare and CP-Violating K and B Decays in the Littlest Higgs Model with T-Parity

We calculate the most interesting rare and CP-violating K and B decays in the Littlest Higgs model with T-parity. We give a collection of Feynman rules including v^2/f^2 contributions that are presented here for the first time and could turn out to be useful also for applications outside flavour physics. We adopt a model-independent parameterization of rare decays in terms of the gauge independent functions X_i,Y_i,Z_i (i=K,d,s), which is in particular useful for the study of the breaking of the universality between K, B_d and B_s systems through non-MFV interactions. Performing the calculation in the unitary and 't Hooft-Feynman gauge, we find that the final result contains a divergence which signals some sensitivity to the ultraviolet completion of the theory. Including an estimate of this contribution, we calculate the branching ratios for the decays $K^+\toπ^+ν\barν$, $K_L\toπ^0ν\barν$, $B_{s,d}\to μ^+μ^-$, $B\to X_{s,d}ν\barν$, $K_L \toπ^0\ell^+\ell^-$ and $B\to X_{s,d}\ell^+\ell^-$, paying particular attention to non-MFV contributions present in the model. Imposing all available constraints we find that the decay rates for $B_{s,d} \to μ^+ μ^-$ and $B \to X_{s,d} ν\bar ν$ can be enhanced by at most 50% and 35% relative to the SM values, while $Br(K^+\toπ^+ν\barν)$ and $Br(K_L\toπ^0ν\barν)$ can be both as high as $5 \cdot 10^{-10}$. Significant enhancements of the decay rates $K_L \toπ^0\ell^+\ell^-$ are also possible. Simultaneously, the CP-asymmetries $S_{ψϕ}$ and $A^s_\text{SL}$ can be enhanced by an order of magnitude, while the electroweak penguin effects in $B \to πK$ turn out to be small, in agreement with the recent data.

Slepton mass-splittings as a signal of LFV at the LHC

Precise measurements of slepton mass-splittings might represent a powerful tool to probe supersymmetric (SUSY) lepton flavour violation (LFV) at the LHC. We point out that mass-splittings of the first two generations of sleptons are especially sensitive to LFV effects involving $τ-μ$ transitions. If these mass-splittings are LFV induced, high-energy LFV processes like the neutralino decay ${\nt}_2\to\nt_1τ^{\pm}μ^{\mp}$ as well as low-energy LFV processes like $τ\toμγ$ are unavoidable. We show that precise slepton mass-splitting measurements and LFV processes both at the high- and low-energy scales are highly complementary in the attempt to (partially) reconstruct the flavour sector of the SUSY model at work. The present study represents another proof of the synergy and interplay existing between the LHC, i.e. the {\em high-energy frontier}, and high-precision low-energy experiments, i.e. the {\em high-intensity frontier}.

The Impact of a 4th Generation on Mixing and CP Violation in the Charm System

We study D0-D0 mixing in the presence of a fourth generation of quarks. In particular, we calculate the size of the allowed CP violation which is found at the observable level well beyond anything possible with CKM dynamics. We calculate the semileptonic asymmetry a_SL and the mixing induced CP asymmetry eta_fS_f which are correlated with each other. We also investigate the correlation of eta_fS_f with a number of prominent observables in other mesonic systems like epsilon'/epsilon, Br(K_L -> pi0 nu nu), Br(K+ -> pi+ nu nu), Br(B_s ->mu+ mu-), Br(B_d -> mu+ mu-) and finally S_psi phi in the B_s system. We identify a clear pattern of flavour and CP violation predicted by the SM4 model: While simultaneous large 4G effects in the K and D systems are possible, accompanying large NP effects in the B_d system are disfavoured. However this behaviour is not as pronounced as found for the LHT and RSc models. In contrast to this, sizeable CP violating effects in the B_s system are possible unless extreme effects in eta_fS_f are found, and Br(B_s ->mu+ mu-) can be strongly enhanced regardless of the situation in the D system. We find that, on the other hand, S_psi phi > 0.2 combined with the measured epsilon'/epsilon significantly diminishes 4G effects within the D system.

The Littlest Higgs Model with T-Parity Facing CP-Violation in B_s - anti-B_s Mixing

The non-minimal flavour violating interactions of mirror quarks and new heavy gauge bosons in the Littlest Higgs model with T-parity (LHT) give rise to naturally large CP-violating effects in the B_s system. In view of a large new CP phase in B_s - anti-B_s mixing hinted by the CDF and D0 data and the recent UTfit analysis, we update our 2006 analysis of particle-antiparticle mixing and rare K and B decays in the LHT model, using the most recent values of a number of input parameters and performing a more careful error analysis. We find that the CP-asymmetry S_{psi phi} can easily reach values ~ 0.15-0.20, compared to the SM value ~ 0.04, while higher values are rather unlikely though not excluded. Large enhancements are also possible in the branching ratios for K_L -> pi0 nu anti-nu, K+ -> pi+ nu anti-nu and K_L -> pi0 l+ l- with much more modest effects in B_{s,d} -> mu+ mu-. We perform a detailed study of correlations between the latter decays and S_{psi phi} as well as of the correlation between S_{psi phi} and S_{psi K_S}. We also point out that the possible tension between epsilon_K and the tree level CKM determination recently hinted by various analyses can easily be resolved in the LHT model.

CP Violation in D0 - anti-D0 Oscillations: General Considerations and Applications to the Littlest Higgs Model with T-Parity

The observed D0 - anti-D0 oscillations provide a new stage in our search for New Physics in heavy flavour dynamics. The theoretical verdict on the observed values of x_D and y_D remains ambiguous: while they could be totally generated by Standard Model dynamics, they could also contain a sizable or even leading contribution from New Physics. Those oscillations are likely to enhance the observability of CP violation as clear manifestations of New Physics. We present general formulae for D0 - anti-D0 oscillations, concentrating on the case of negligible direct CP violation. In particular we derive a general formula for the time-dependent mixing-induced CP asymmetry in decays to a CP eigenstate and its correlation with the semileptonic CP asymmetry a_SL(D0) in D0(t) -> l nu K. We apply our formalism to the Littlest Higgs model with T-parity, using the time-dependent CP asymmetry in D -> K_S phi as an example. We find observable effects at a level well beyond anything possible with CKM dynamics. Comparisons with CP violation in the K and B systems offer an excellent test of this scenario and reveal the specific pattern of flavour and CP violation in the D0 - anti-D0 system predicted by this model. We discuss a number of charm decays that could potentially offer an insight in the dynamics of CP violation in D decays. We also apply our formalism to B_s - anti-B_s mixing.

Electroweak and Flavour Structure of a Warped Extra Dimension with Custodial Protection

We present the electroweak and flavour structure of a model with a warped extra dimension and the bulk gauge group SU(3) x SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R x P_LR x U(1)_X. The presence of SU(2)_R implies an unbroken custodial symmetry in the Higgs system allowing to eliminate large contributions to the T parameter, whereas the P_LR symmetry and the enlarged fermion representations provide a custodial symmetry for flavour diagonal and flavour changing couplings of the SM Z boson to left-handed down-type quarks. We diagonalise analytically the mass matrices of charged and neutral gauge bosons including the first KK modes. We present the mass matrices for quarks including heavy KK modes and discuss the neutral and charged currents involving light and heavy fields. We give the corresponding complete set of Feynman rules in the unitary gauge.

Another Look at Minimal Lepton Flavour Violation, l_i -> l_j gamma, Leptogenesis, and the Ratio M_nu/ Lambda_LFV

We analyze lepton flavour violation (LFV), as well as generation of the observed baryon-antibaryon asymmetry of the Universe (BAU) within a generalized minimal lepton flavour violation (MLFV) framework where we allow for CP violation both at low and high energies. The generation of BAU is obtained through radiative resonant leptogenesis (RRL), where starting with three exactly degenerate right-handed neutrinos at Lambda_GUT, we demonstrate explicitly within the SM and the MSSM that the splittings between their masses at the see-saw scale M_nu, generated by renormalization group effects, are sufficient for a successful leptogenesis for M_nu even as low as 10^6 GeV. The inclusion of flavour effects plays an important role in this result and can lead to the observed BAU even in the absence of CP violation beyond the PMNS phases. The absence of a stringent lower bound on M_nu in this type of leptogenesis allows to easily satisfy present and near future upper bounds on mu -> e gamma and other charged lepton flavour violating (LFV) processes even for Lambda_LFV = O(1 TeV). We find, that the MLFV framework in the presence of heavy right-handed neutrinos and leptogenesis is not as predictive as MFV in the quark sector and point out that without a specific MLFV model, there is a rich spectrum of possibilities for charged LFV processes and for their correlation with low energy neutrino physics and the LHC physics, even if the constraint from the observed BAU is taken into account. While certain qualitative features of our analysis confirm findings of Cirigliano et al., at the quantitative level we find phenomenologically important differences. We explain the origin of these differences.

Lower Bounds on Delta M_{s,d} from Constrained Minimal Flavour Violation

We demonstrate that in the class of models with Constrained Minimal Flavour Violation (CMFV), in which the CKM matrix is the only source of CP violation and B^0_q-\bar B^0_q mixings (q=d,s) are described by a single operator (\bar b q)_{V-A} (\bar b q)_{V-A}, the lower bounds on the mass differences Delta M_{s,d} are simply given by their Standard Model values (Delta M_{s,d})_SM with two possible exceptions that we identify. Our proof involves all possible charged gauge boson, Goldstone boson and physical charged and neutral scalar exchanges and assumes that the masses of new charge +2/3 singlet heavy fermions T_i that mix with the top quark have all to be larger than m_t, which is chosen by nature. Similarly, the additional charged gauge bosons have to satisfy M_i>M_W, while no such bound needs to be set on the charged and neutral scalar masses. The two possible exceptions arise in the presence of U(1) neutral gauge bosons and Majorana fermions in box diagrams with flavour violating couplings. However in the case of the MSSM with CMFV and low tan beta our bound is satisfied in spite of gluino and neutralino contributions.

Rare K and B Decays in the Littlest Higgs Model without T-Parity

We analyze rare K and B decays in the Littlest Higgs (LH) model without T-parity. We find that the final result for the Z^0-penguin contribution contains a divergence that is generated by the one-loop radiative corrections to the currents corresponding to the dynamically broken generators. Including an estimate of these logarithmically enhanced terms, we calculate the branching ratios for the decays K^+ -> pi^+ nu bar nu, K_L -> pi^0 nu bar nu, B_{s,d} -> mu^+ mu^- and B -> X_{s,d} nu bar nu. We find that for the high energy scale f=O(2-3) TeV, as required by the electroweak precision studies, the enhancement of all branching ratios amounts to at most 15% over the SM values. On the technical side we identify a number of errors in the existing Feynman rules in the LH model without T-parity that could have some impact on other analyses present in the literature. Calculating penguin and box diagrams in the unitary gauge, we find divergences in both contributions that are cancelled in the sum except for the divergence mentioned above.

Particle-Antiparticle Mixing, ε_K and the Unitarity Triangle in the Littlest Higgs Model

We calculate the K^{0}-\bar{K}^{0}, B_{d,s}^{0}-\bar{B}_{d,s}^{0} mixing mass differences ΔM_K, ΔM_{d,s} and the CP-violating parameter ε_{K} in the Littlest Higgs (LH) model. For f/v as low as 5 and the Yukawa parameter x_L<0.8, the enhancement of ΔM_{d} amounts to at most 20%. Similar comments apply to ΔM_s and ε_{K}. The correction to ΔM_{K} is negligible. The dominant new contribution in this parameter range, calculated here for the first time, comes from the box diagrams with (W_L^\pm,W_H^\pm) exchanges and ordinary quarks that are only suppressed by the mass of W_H^\pm but do not involve explicit O(v^2/f^2) factors. This contribution is strictly positive. The explicit O(v^2/f^2) corrections to the SM diagrams with ordinary quarks and two W_L^\pm exchanges have to be combined with the box diagrams with a single heavy T quark exchange for the GIM mechanism to work. These O(v^2/f^2) corrections are found to be of the same order of magnitude as the (W_L^\pm,W_H^\pm) contribution but only for x_L approaching 0.8 they can compete with it. We point out that for x_L>0.85 box diagrams with two T exchanges have to be included. Although formally O(v^4/f^4), this contribution is dominant for x_L \approx 1 due to non-decoupling of T that becomes fully effective only at this order. We emphasize, that the concept of the unitarity triangle is still useful in the LH model, in spite of the O(v^2/f^2) corrections to the CKM unitarity involving only ordinary quarks. We demonstrate the cancellation of the divergences in box diagrams that appear when one uses the unitary gauge for W_L^\pm and W_H^\pm.

Upper Bounds on Rare K and B Decays from Minimal Flavour Violation

We study the branching ratios of rare K and B decays in models with minimal flavour violation, using the presently available information from the universal unitarity triangle analysis and from the measurements of Br(B -> X_s gamma), Br(B -> X_s l^+l^-) and Br(K^+ -> pi^+ nu nubar). We find the following upper bounds: Br(K^+ -> pi^+ nu nubar)< 11.9 10^{-11}, Br(K_L -> pi^0 nu nubar)< 4.6 10^{-11}, Br(K_L -> mu mubar)_{SD}< 1.4 10^{-9}, Br(B -> X_s nu nubar)< 5.2 10^{-5}, Br(B -> X_d nu nubar)< 2.2 10^{-6}, Br(B_s -> mu mubar)< 7.4 10^{-9}, Br(B_d -> mu mubar)< 2.2 10^{-10} at 95 % probability. We analyze in detail various possible scenarios with positive or negative interference of Standard Model and New Physics contributions, and show how an improvement of experimental data corresponding to the projected 2010 B factory integrated luminosities will allow to disentangle and test these different possibilities. Finally, anticipating that subsequently the leading role in constraining this kind of new physics will be taken over by the rare decays K^+ -> pi^+ nu nubar, K_L -> pi^0 nu nubar and B_{s,d} -> mu mubar, that are dominated by the Z^0 -penguin function C, we also present plots for several branching ratios as functions of C . We point out an interesting triple correlation between K^+ -> pi^+ nu nubar, B -> X_s gamma and B -> X_s l^+l^- present in MFV models.

K^+ -> pi^+ nu nu-bar and K_L -> pi^0 nu nu-bar Decays in the General MSSM

We reanalyze the rare decays K^+ -> pi^+ nu nu-bar and K_L -> pi^0 nu nu-bar in a general MSSM with conserved R-parity. Working in the mass eigenstate basis and performing adaptive scanning of a large space of supersymmetric parameters, 16 parameters in the constrained scan and 63 in the extended scan, we find that large departures from the Standard Model expectations are possible while satisfying all existing constraints. Both branching ratios can be as large as a few times 10^{-10} with Br(K_L -> pi^0 nu nu-bar) often larger than Br(K^+ -> pi^+ nu nu-bar) and close to its model independent upper bound. We give examples of supersymmetric parameters for which large departures from the SM expectations can be found and emphasize that the present 90% C.L. experimental upper bound on Br(K^+ -> pi^+ nu nu-bar) gives a non trivial constraint on the MSSM parameter space. Unlike previous analyses, we find that chargino box diagrams can give, already for moderately light charged sleptons, a significant contribution. As a byproduct we find that the ranges for the angles beta and gamma in the unitarity triangle are relaxed due to the presence of new CP-violating phases in K^0 - K^0-bar and B^0_d - B^0_d-bar mixing to 12 degrees <= beta <= 27 degrees and 20 degrees <= gamma <= 110 degrees.

Waiting for Clear Signals of New Physics in B and K Decays

We classify the extensions of the Standard Model (SM) according to the structure of local operators in the weak effective Hamiltonian and the presence or absence of new flavour and CP-violating interactions beyond those represented by the CKM matrix. In particular we review characteristic properties of models with minimal flavour violation (MFV), models with significant contributions from Higgs penguins and models with enhanced Z^0 penguins carrying a large new CP-violating phase. Within the latter models, the anomalous behaviour of certain B\toπK observables implies large departures from the SM predictions for rare and CP-violating K and B decays. Most spectacular is the enhancement of Br(K_L->pi^0 nu nubar) by one order of magnitude and a strong violation of the MFV relation (\sin2β)_{πν\barν}=(\sin2β)_{ψK_S}. On the other hand our prediction for (\sin2β)_{ϕK_S}\approx 0.9 differs from the Belle result by the sign but is consistent with the BaBar value. We give a personal shopping list for the coming years.

Minimal Flavour Violation

These lectures give a description of models with minimal flavour violation (MFV) that can be tested in $B$ and $K$ meson decays. This class of models can be formulated to a very good approximation in terms of 11 parameters: 4 parameters of the CKM matrix and 7 values of the {\it universal} master functions $F_r$ that parametrize the short distance contributions. In a given MFV model, $F_r$ can be calculated in perturbation theory and are generally correlated with each other but in a model independent analysis they must be considered as free parameters. We conjecture that only 5 or even only 4 of these functions receive significant new physics contributions. We summarize the status of the CKM matrix, outline strategies for the determination of the values of $F_r$ and present a number of relations between physical observables that do not depend on $F_r$ at all. We emphasize that the formulation of MFV in terms of master functions allows to study transparently correlations between $B$ and $K$ decays which is very difficult if Wilson coefficients normalized at low energy scales are used instead. We discuss briefly a specific MFV model: the Standard Model with one universal large extra dimension.

Relations between ΔM_{s,d} and B_{s,d}\to μ\barμin Models with Minimal Flavour Violation

The predictions for the B_{s,d}-\bar B_{s,d} mixing mass differences ΔM_{s,d} and Br(B_{s,d}\toμ\barμ) within the Standard Model (SM) and its extensions suffer from considerable hadronic uncertainties present in the B_{s,d}-meson decay constants F_{B_{s,d}} that enter these quantities quadratically. We point out that in the restricted class of models with minimal flavour violation (MFV) in which only the SM low energy operators are relevant, the ratios Br(B_{q}\toμ\barμ)/ΔM_q (q=s,d) do not depend on F_{B_{q}} and the CKM matrix elements. They involve in addition to the short distance functions and B-meson lifetimes only the non-perturbative parameters \hat B_{s,d}. The latter are under much better control than F_{B_{s,d}}. Consequently in these models the predictions for Br(B_{q}\toμ\barμ) have only small hadronic uncertainties once ΔM_q are experimentally known. Of particular interest is also the relation Br(B_{s}\toμ\barμ)/Br(B_{d}\toμ\barμ)=\hat B_{d}/\hat B_{s} τ(B_{s})/τ(B_{d}) ΔM_{s}/ΔM_{d} that is practically free of theoretical uncertainties as \hat B_{s}/\hat B_{d}=1 up to small SU(3) breaking corrections. Using these ideas within the SM we find much more accurate predictions than those found in the literature: Br(B_{s}\toμ\barμ)=(3.4\pm 0.5)\cdot 10^{-9} and Br(B_{d}\toμ\barμ)=(1.00\pm 0.14)\cdot 10^{-10} were in the first case we assumed as an example ΔM_s=(18.0\pm 0.5)/ps.

The B -> pi K Puzzle and its Relation to Rare B and K Decays

The Standard-Model interpretation of the ratios of charged and neutral B-> pi K rates, R_c and R_n, respectively, points towards a puzzling picture. Since these observables are affected significantly by colour-allowed electroweak (EW) penguins, this ``B -> pi K puzzle'' could be a manifestation of new physics in the EW penguin sector. Performing the analysis in the R_n-R_c plane, which is very suitable for monitoring various effects, we demonstrate that we may, in fact, move straightforwardly to the experimental region in this plane through an enhancement of the relevant EW penguin parameter q. We derive analytical bounds for q in terms of a quantity L, that measures the violation of the Lipkin sum rule, and point out that strong phases around 90 deg are favoured by the data, in contrast to QCD factorisation. The B -> pi K modes imply a correlation between q and the angle gamma that in the limit of negligible rescattering effects and colour suppressed EW penguins depends only on the value of L. Concentrating on a minimal flavour-violating new-physics scenario with enhanced Z^0 penguins, we find that the current experimental values on B -> X_s mu^+ mu^- require roughly L <= 1.8. As the B -> pi K data give L = 5.7 +- 2.4, L has either to move to smaller values once the B -> pi K data improve or new sources of flavour and CP violation are needed. In turn, the enhanced values of L seen in the B -> pi K data could be accompanied by enhanced branching ratios for rare decays. Most interesting turns out to be the correlation between the B -> pi K modes and BR(K^+ -> pi^+ nu nu), with the latter depending approximately on a single ``scaling'' variable \bar L= L (|V_{ub}/V_{cb}|/0.086)^2.3.

The Impact of Universal Extra Dimensions on B -> X_s gamma, B -> X_s gluon, B -> X_s mu^+ mu^-, K_L -> pi^0 e^ +e^-, and epsilon'/epsilon

We calculate the contributions of the Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes to the gamma-penguins, gluon-penguins, gamma-magnetic penguins and chromomagnetic penguins in the Appelquist, Cheng and Dobrescu (ACD) model with one universal extra dimension. Together with our previous calculation of Z^0 penguin diagrams (See http://arxiv.org/abs/hep-ph/0212143) this allows to study the impact of the KK modes on the decays B -> X_s gamma, B -> X_s gluon, B -> X_s mu^+ mu^- and K_L -> pi^0 e^+ e^- and on the CP-violating ratio epsilon'/epsilon. For the compactification scale 1/R= 300 GeV the perturbative part of the branching ratio for B -> X_s mu^+ mu^- is enhanced by 12 % while the zero in the A_FB asymmetry is shifted from \hat s_0=0.162 to \hat s_0=0.142. The sizable suppressions of Br(B -> X_s gamma) ~ 20 % and Br(B -> X_s gluon) ~ 40 % could have interesting phenomenological implications on the lower bound on 1/R provided the experimental and theoretical uncertainties will be decreased. Similar comments apply to epsilon'/epsilon that is suppressed relative to the Standard Model expectations with the size of the suppression depending sensitively on the hadronic matrix elements. The impact on K_L -> pi^0 e^+ e^- is below 10 %. We point out a correlation between the zero \hat s_0 in the A_FB asymmetry and Br(B -> X_s gamma) that should be valid in most models with minimal flavour violation.

The CKM Matrix and The Unitarity Triangle: Another Look

The unitarity triangle can be determined by means of two measurements of its sides or angles. Assuming the same relative errors on the angles $(α,β,γ)$ and the sides $(R_b,R_t)$, we find that the pairs $(γ,β)$ and $(γ,R_b)$ are most efficient in determining $(\bar\varrho,\barη)$ that describe the apex of the unitarity triangle. They are followed by $(α,β)$, $(α,R_b)$, $(R_t,β)$, $(R_t,R_b)$ and $(R_b,β)$. As the set $\vus$, $\vcb$, $R_t$ and $β$ appears to be the best candidate for the fundamental set of flavour violating parameters in the coming years, we show various constraints on the CKM matrix in the $(R_t,β)$ plane. Using the best available input we determine the universal unitarity triangle for models with minimal flavour violation (MFV) and compare it with the one in the Standard Model. We present allowed ranges for $\sin 2β$, $\sin 2α$, $γ$, $R_b$, $R_t$ and $ΔM_s$ within the Standard Model and MFV models. We also update the allowed range for the function $F_{tt}$ that parametrizes various MFV-models.

$ΔM_s/ΔM_d$, $\sin 2β$ and the angle $γ$ in the Presence of New $ΔF=2$ Operators

We present formulae for the mass differences $ΔM_d$ and $ΔM_s$ in the \BBds systems and for the CP violation parameter $ε$ which are valid in minimal flavour violation models giving rise to new four-fermion $ΔF=2$ operators. Short distance contributions to $ΔM_s$, $ΔM_d$ and $ε$ are parameterized by three {\it real} functions $F^s_{tt}$, $F^d_{tt}$ and $F^ε_{tt}$, respectively ($F^s_{tt} = F^d_{tt} = F^ε_{tt}$ holds only if the Standard Model $(V-A) \otimes (V-A)$ operators dominate). We present simple strategies involving the ratio $ΔM_s/ΔM_d$, $\sin2β$ and $γ$ that allow to search for the effects of the new operators. We point out that their sizable contributions to the ratio $ΔM_s/ΔM_d$ would in principle allow $γ$ to be larger than $90^\circ$. Constraints on the functions $F^i_{tt}$ imposed by the present (and future) experimental data are also discussed. As an example we show that for large $\tan\barβ\equiv v_2/v_1$ and $H^+$ not too heavy, $F^s_{tt}$ in the MSSM with heavy sparticles can be substantially smaller than in the SM due the charged Higgs box contributions and in particular due to the growing like $\tan^4\barβ$ contribution of the double penguin diagrams involving neutral Higgs boson exchanges. As a result the bounds on the function $F^s_{tt}$ can be violated which allows to exclude large mixing of stops. In this scenario the range of $\sin2β$ following from $ε$ and $ΔM_d$ is identical to the SM ones ($0.5<\sin 2β<0.8$). On the other hand $γ$ following from $ΔM_s/ΔM_d$ is lower.

Bounds on the Unitarity Triangle, $\sin 2β$ and $K\toπν\barν$ Decays in Models with Minimal Flavour Violation

We present a general discussion of the unitarity triangle from $ε_K$, $ΔM_{d,s}$ and $K \to πν\overlineν$ in models with minimal flavour violation (MFV), allowing for arbitrary signs of the generalized Inami--Lim functions $F_{tt}$ and $X$ relevant for $(ε_K,ΔM_{d,s})$ and $K \to πν\overlineν$, respectively. In the models in which $F_{tt}$ has a sign opposite to the one in the Standard Model, i.e. $F_{tt}<0$, the data for $(ε_K, ΔM_{d,s})$ imply an absolute lower bound on the $B_d\toψK_{S}$ CP asymmetry $a_{ψK_S}$ of 0.69, which is substantially stronger than 0.42 arising in the case of $F_{tt}>0$. An important finding of this paper is the observation that for given $Br(K^+\toπ^+ν\overlineν)$ and $a_{ψK_S}$ only two values for $Br(K_{L}\toπ^0ν\overlineν)$, corresponding to the two signs of $X$, are possible in the full class of MFV models, independently of any new parameters arising in these models. This provides a powerful test for this class of models. Moreover, we derive absolute lower and upper bounds on $Br(K_{L}\toπ^0ν\overlineν)$ as functions of $Br(K^+\toπ^+ν\overlineν)$. Using the present experimental upper bounds on $Br(K^+\toπ^+ν\overlineν)$ and $|V_{ub}/V_{cb}|$, we obtain the absolute upper bound $Br(K_{L}\toπ^0ν\overlineν)< 7.1 \cdot 10^{-10}$ (90% C.L.).

What is the (epsilon'/epsilon)_exp Telling Us ?

Nature might be kinder than previously thought as far as epsilon'/epsilon is concerned. We show that the recently obtained experimental value for epsilon'/epsilon does not require sizeable 1/N and isospin-breaking corrections. We propose to display the theoretical results for epsilon'/epsilon in a (P^{1/2}, P^{3/2}) plane in which the experimental result is represented by a (epsilon'/epsilon)_exp-path. This should allow to exhibit transparently the role of 1/N and isospin-breaking corrections in different calculations of epsilon'/epsilon. From now on theorists are allowed to walk only along this (epsilon'/epsilon)_exp-path.

A Lower Bound on sin 2βfrom Minimal Flavour Violation

We point out that there exists an absolute lower bound on sin 2βin all models with minimal flavour violation (MFV), that do not have any new operators beyond those present in the Standard Model and in which all flavour changing transitions are governed by the CKM matrix with no new phases beyond the KM phase. This bound depends only on V_{cb}, V_{ub} and the hadronic parameters \hat B_K, F_{B_d}\sqrt{\hat B_d} and ξrelevant for the CP-violating parameter \varepsilon and the B^0_{d,s}-\bar B^0_{d,s} mixings. Performing a simple scanning over the present ranges of these parameters we find sin 2β\ge 0.34. We illustrate how this bound could become stronger when our knowledge of the parameters in question improves and when the upper bound on the B^0_{s}-\bar B^0_{s} mixing ((ΔM)_s) will be experimentally known. Provided the future accurate measurements of sin 2βthrough the CP asymmetry in B_d^0(\bar B_d^0)\to ψK_S will confirm the low values recently reported by BaBar and Belle, there is a likely possibility that this class of models will be excluded. This would firmly imply the necessity of new CP-violating phases and/or new effective operators in the weak effective Hamiltonians for K^0-\bar K^0 and B^0_{d,s}-\bar B^0_{d,s} mixings. We also point out that within the MFV models there exists also an absolute lower bound on the angle γ. We find \sinγ\ge 0.24. This lower bound could become stronger in the future.

A General Analysis of $γ$ Determinations from $B\toπK$ Decays

We present a general parametrization of $B^\pm\toπ^\pm K, π^0K^\pm$ and $B_d\toπ^0 K, π^\mp K^\pm$ decays, taking into account both electroweak penguin and rescattering effects. This formalism allows -- among other things -- an improved implementation of the strategies that were recently proposed by Neubert and Rosner to probe the CKM angle $γ$ with the help of $B^\pm\toπ^\pm K, π^0K^\pm$ decays. In particular, it allows us to investigate the sensitivity of the extracted value of $γ$ to the basic assumptions of their approach. We find that certain SU(3)-breaking effects may have an important impact and emphasize that additional hadronic uncertainties are due to rescattering processes. The latter can be controlled by using SU(3) flavour symmetry arguments and additional experimental information provided by $B^\pm\to K^\pm K$ modes. We propose a new strategy to probe the angle $γ$ with the help of the neutral decays $B_d\toπ^0 K, π^\mp K^\pm$, which is theoretically cleaner than the $B^\pm\toπ^\pm K, π^0K^\pm$ approach. Here rescattering processes can be taken into account by just measuring the CP-violating observables of the decay $B_d\toπ^0K_{\rm S}$. Finally, we point out that an experimental analysis of $B_s\to K^+K^-$ modes would also be very useful to probe the CKM angle $γ$, as well as electroweak penguins, and we critically compare the virtues and weaknesses of the various approaches discussed in this paper. As a by-product, we point out a strategy to include the electroweak penguins in the determination of the CKM angle $α$ from $B\toππ$ decays.

Quark mixing, CP violation and rare decays after the top quark discovery

We review the highlights of quark mixing, particle-antiparticle mixing, CP violation and rare K- and B-decays in the Standard Model. The top quark discovery, the precise measurement of its mass, the improved knowledge of the couplings $V_{cb}$ and $V_{ub}$, and the calculations of NLO short distance QCD corrections improved considerably the predictions for various decay rates, the determination of the couplings $V_{td}$ and $V_{ts}$ and of the complex phase in the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix. After presenting the general theoretical framework for weak decays, we discuss the following topics in detail: i) the CKM matrix, its most convenient parametrizations and the unitarity triangle, ii) the CP-violating parameter $ε_K$ and $B^0_{d,s}-\bar B^0_{d,s}$ mixings, iii) the ratio $ε'/ε$, iv) the rare K-decays $K_L\toπ^0e^+e^-$, $K^+\toπ^+ν\barν$, $K_L\toπ^0ν\barν$ and $K_L\toμ^+μ^-$, v) the radiative decays $B\to X_sγ$ and $B\to X_s l^+l^-$, vi) the rare B-decays $B\to X_{s,d}ν\barν$ and $B_{d,s}\to l^+l^-$, vii) CP violation in neutral and charged B-decays putting emphasis on clean determinations of the angles of the unitarity triangle, and viii) the role of electroweak penguins in B-decays. We present several future visions demonstrating very clearly the great potential of CP asymmetries in B-decays and of clean K-decays such as $K^+\toπ^+ν\barν$ and $K_L\toπ^0ν\barν$ in the determination of the CKM parameters and in decisive testing of the Standard Model. An outlook for the coming years ends our review.

A Determination of the CKM-angle $α$ using Mixing-induced CP Violation in the Decays $B_d\toπ^+π^-$ and $B_d\to K^0 \bar K^0$

We present a method of determining the CKM-angle $α$ by performing simultaneous measurements of the mixing-induced CP asymmetries of the decays $B_d\toπ^+π^-$ and $B_d\to K^0\bar K^0$. The accuracy of our approach is limited by $SU(3)$-breaking effects originating from $\bar b\to \bar ds\bar s$ QCD-penguin diagrams. Using plausible power-counting arguments we show that these uncertainties are expected to be of the same order as those arising through electroweak penguins in the standard Gronau-London-method in which $α$ is extracted by means of isospin relations among $B\toππ$ decay amplitudes. Therefore our approach, which does not involve the experimentally difficult mode $B_d\toπ^0π^0$ and is essentially unaffected by electroweak penguins, may be an interesting alternative to determine $α$.

In particular we review the present status of next-to-leading QCD calculations in this field stressing their importance in the determination of the parameters in the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix. We emphasize that the definitive tests of the standard model picture of rare decays and CP violation will come through a {\it simultaneous} study of CP asymmetries in $B_{d,s}^0$ decays, the rare decays $K^+ \to π^+ν\barν$ and $K_L \to π^0ν\barν$, and $(B^0_d-\bar B^0_d)/(B^0_s-\bar B^0_s)$.

A 1993 Look at the Lower Bound on the Top Quark Mass from CP Violation

We point out that the lower bound on $m_t$ from the CP violation parameter $ε_K$ has increased considerably. Using Wolfenstein parametrization of the CKM matrix we derive an analytic expression for this bound as a function of $\mid V_{cb}\mid, \mid V_{ub}/V_{cb}\mid$ and the non-perturbative parameter $B_K$. For $B_K\leq 0.80,\mid V_{cb} \mid\leq 0.040$ and $\mid V_{ub}/V_{cb}\mid\leq 0.10$ we find $m_t > 130 GeV$. However, for $B_K \leq 0.70, \mid V_{cb}\mid \leq 0.038 $ and $\mid V_{ub}/V_{cb}\mid \leq 0.08$ the bound is raised to $m_t > 205~GeV$. The lower bound on $m_t$ from $B^o-\bar B^o$ mixing is also reconsidered.

The Anatomy of $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ Beyond Leading Logarithms with Improved Hadronic Matrix Elements

We use the recently calculated two--loop anomalous dimensions of current-current operators, QCD and electroweak penguin operators to construct the effective Hamiltonian for $ΔS=1$ transitions beyond the leading logarithmic approximation. We solve the renormalization group equations and give the numerical values of Wilson coeff. functions. We propose a new semi-phenomenological approach to hadronic matrix elements which incorporates the data for $CP$-conserving $K \rightarrow ππ$ amplitudes and allows to determine the matrix elements of all $(V-A)\otimes (V-A)$ operators in any renormalization scheme and do a renormalization group analysis of all hadronic matrix elements $\langle Q_i(μ) \rangle$. We compare critically our treatment of these matrix elements with those given in the literature. We find in the NDR scheme $\epe = (6.7 \pm 2.6)\times 10^{-4}$ in agreement with the experimental findings of E731. We point out however that the increase of $\langle Q_6 \rangle$ by only a factor of two gives $\epe = (20.0 \pm 6.5)\times 10^{-4}$ in agreement with the result of NA31. The dependence of $\epe$ on $Λ_{\bar{MS}}$, $m_t$ and $\langle Q_{6,8} \rangle$ is presented.
