Distributions of Hook lengths in integer partitions

Motivated by the many roles that hook lengths play in mathematics, we study the distribution of the number of $t$-hooks in the partitions of $n$. We prove that the limiting distribution is normal with mean $μ_t(n)\sim \frac{\sqrt{6n}}π-\frac{t}{2}$ and variance $σ_t^2(n)\sim \frac{(π^2-6)\sqrt{6n}}{2π^3}.$ Furthermore, we prove that the distribution of the number of hook lengths that are multiples of a fixed $t\geq 4$ in partitions of $n$ converge to a shifted Gamma distribution with parameter $k=(t-1)/2$ and scale $θ=\sqrt{2/(t-1)}.$

Distributions on partitions arising from Hilbert schemes and hook lengths

Recent works at the interface of algebraic combinatorics, algebraic geometry, number theory, and topology have provided new integer-valued invariants on integer partitions. It is natural to consider the distribution of partitions when sorted by these invariants in congruence classes. We consider the prominent situations which arise from extensions of the Nekrasov-Okounkov hook product formula, and from Betti numbers of various Hilbert schemes of $n$ points on $\mathbb{C}^2.$ For the Hilbert schemes, we prove that homology is equidistributed as $n\to \infty.$ For $t$-hooks, we prove distributions which are often not equidistributed. The cases where $t\in \{2, 3\}$ stand out, as there are congruence classes where such counts are zero. To obtain these distributions, we obtain analytic results which are of independent interest. We determine the asymptotics, near roots of unity, of the ubiquitous infinite products $$ F_1(ξ; q):=\prod_{n=1}^{\infty}\left(1-ξq^n\right), \ \ \ F_2(ξ; q):=\prod_{n=1}^{\infty}\left(1-(ξq)^n\right) \ \ \ {\text {and}}\ \ \ F_3(ξ; q):=\prod_{n=1}^{\infty}\left(1-ξ^{-1}(ξq)^n\right). $$

Euler-Kronecker constants for cyclotomic fields

The Euler-Mascheroni constant $γ=0.5772\dots\!$ is the $K=\mathbb{Q}$ example of an Euler-Kronecker constant $γ_K$ of a number field $K.$ In this note we consider the size of the $γ_q=γ_{K_q}$ for cyclotomic fields $K_q:=\mathbb{Q}(ζ_q).$ Assuming the Elliott-Halberstam Conjecture (EH), we prove uniformly in $Q$ that $$\frac{1}{Q}\sum_{Q<q\le 2Q} \left |γ_q - \log q\right |= o(\log Q).$$ In other words, under EH the $γ_q / \log q$ in these ranges converge to the one point distribution at $1$. This theorem refines and extends a previous result of Ford, Luca, and Moree for prime $q.$

Heights of points on elliptic curves over $\mathbb Q$

In this note we obtain effective lower bounds for the canonical heights of non-torsion points on $E(\mathbb{Q})$ by making use of suitable elliptic curve ideal class pairings $$Ψ_{E,-D}: E(\mathbb{Q})\times E_{-D}(\mathbb{Q})\mapsto \mathrm{CL}(-D).$$ In terms of the class number $H(-D)$ and $T_E(-D)$, a logarithmic function in $D$, we prove $$ \widehat{h}(P)> \frac{|E_{\mathrm{tor}}(\mathbb{Q})|^2}{\left( H(-D)+ |E_{\mathrm{tor}}(\mathbb{Q})|\right)^2}\cdot T_E(-D). $$

Limiting Betti distributions of Hilbert schemes on $n$ points

Hausel and Rodriguez-Villegas recently observed that work of Göttsche, combined with a classical result of Erdős and Lehner on integer partitions, implies that the limiting Betti distribution for the Hilbert schemes $(\mathbb{C}^2)^{[n]}$ on $n$ points, as $n\rightarrow +\infty,$ is a \textit{Gumbel distribution}. In view of this example, they ask for further such Betti distributions. We answer this question for the quasihomogeneous Hilbert schemes $((\mathbb{C}^2)^{[n]})^{T_{α,β}}$ that are cut out by torus actions. We prove that their limiting distributions are also of Gumbel type. To obtain this result, we combine work of Buryak, Feigin, and Nakajima on these Hilbert schemes with our generalization of the result of Erdős and Lehner, which gives the distribution of the number of parts in partitions that are multiples of a fixed integer $A\geq 2.$ Furthermore, if $p_k(A;n)$ denotes the number of partitions of $n$ with exactly $k$ parts that are multiples of $A$, then we obtain the asymptotic $$ p_k(A,n)\sim \frac{24^{\frac k2-\frac14}(n-Ak)^{\frac k2-\frac34}}{\sqrt2\left(1-\frac1A\right)^{\frac k2-\frac14}k!A^{k+\frac12}(2π)^k}e^{2π\sqrt{\frac1{6}\left(1-\frac1A\right)(n-Ak)}}, $$ a result which is of independent interest.

Turán inequalities for the plane partition function

Heim, Neuhauser, and Tröger recently established some inequalities for MacMahon's plane partition function $\mathrm{PL}(n)$ that generalize known results for Euler's partition function $p(n)$. They also conjectured that $\mathrm{PL}(n)$ is log-concave for all $n\geq 12.$ We prove this conjecture. Moreover, for every $d\geq 1$, we prove their speculation that $\mathrm{PL}(n)$ satisfies the degree $d$ Turán inequality for sufficiently large $n$. The case where $d=2$ is the case of log-concavity.

Eichler integrals of Eisenstein series as $q$-brackets of weighted $t$-hook functions on partitions

We consider the $t$-hook functions on partitions $f_{a,t}: \mathcal{P}\rightarrow \mathbb{C}$ defined by $$ f_{a,t}(λ):=t^{a-1} \sum_{h\in \mathcal{H}_t(λ)}\frac{1}{h^a}, $$ where $\mathcal{H}_t(λ)$ is the multiset of partition hook numbers that are multiples of $t$. The Bloch-Okounkov $q$-brackets $\langle f_{a,t}\rangle_q$ include Eichler integrals of the classical Eisenstein series. For even $a\geq 2$, we show that these $q$-brackets are natural pieces of weight $2-a$ sesquiharmonic and harmonic Maass forms, while for odd $a\leq -1,$ we show that they are holomorphic quantum modular forms. We use these results to obtain new formulas of Chowla-Selberg type, and asymptotic expansions involving values of the Riemann zeta-function and Bernoulli numbers. We make use of work of Berndt, Han and Ji, and Zagier.

Fields generated by characters of finite linear groups

In previous work, the authors confirmed the speculation of J. G. Thompson that certain multiquadratic fields are generated by specified character values of sufficiently large alternating groups $A_n$. Here we address the natural generalization of this speculation to the finite general linear groups $\mathrm{GL}_m\left(\mathbb{F}_q\right)$ and $\mathrm{SL}_2\left(\mathbb{F}_q\right)$.

Elliptic curves and lower bounds for class numbers

Ideal class pairings map the rational points of rank $r\geq 1$ elliptic curves $E/\Q$ to the ideal class groups $\CL(-D)$ of certain imaginary quadratic fields. These pairings imply that $$h(-D) \geq \frac{1}{2}(c(E)-\varepsilon)(\log D)^{\frac{r}{2}} $$ for sufficiently large discriminants $-D$ in certain families, where $c(E)$ is a natural constant. These bounds are effective, and they offer improvements to known lower bounds for many discriminants.

Jensen Polynomials for the Riemann Xi Function

We investigate Riemann's xi function $ξ(s):=\frac{1}{2}s(s-1)π^{-\frac{s}{2}}Γ(\frac{s}{2})ζ(s)$ (here $ζ(s)$ is the Riemann zeta function). The Riemann Hypothesis (RH) asserts that if $ξ(s)=0$, then $\mathrm{Re}(s)=\frac{1}{2}$. Pólya proved that RH is equivalent to the hyperbolicity of the Jensen polynomials $J^{d,n}(X)$ constructed from certain Taylor coefficients of $ξ(s)$. For each $d\geq 1$, recent work proves that $J^{d,n}(X)$ is hyperbolic for sufficiently large $n$. Here we make this result effective. Moreover, we show how the low-lying zeros of the derivatives $ξ^{(n)}(s)$ influence the hyperbolicity of $J^{d,n}(X)$.

Quadratic twists of elliptic curves and class numbers

For positive rank $r$ elliptic curves $E(\mathbb{Q})$, we employ ideal class pairings $$ E(\mathbb{Q})\times E_{-D}(\mathbb{Q}) \rightarrow \mathrm{CL}(-D), $$ for quadratic twists $E_{-D}(\mathbb{Q})$ with a suitable ``small $y$-height'' rational point, to obtain effective class number lower bounds. For the curves $E^{(a)}: \ y^2=x^3-a,$ with rank $r(a),$ this gives $$ h(-D) \geq \frac{1}{10}\cdot \frac{|E_{\mathrm{tor}}(\mathbb{Q})|}{\sqrt{R_{\mathbb{Q}}(E)}}\cdot \frac{Γ\left (\frac{r(a)}{2}+1\right)}{(4π)^{\frac{r(a)}{2}}} \cdot \frac{\log(D)^{\frac{r(a)}{2}}}{\log \log D}, $$ representing an improvement to the classical lower bound of Goldfeld, Gross and Zagier when $r(a)\geq 3$. We prove that the number of twists $E_{-D}^{(a)}(\mathbb{Q})$ with such a point (resp. with such a point and rank $\geq 2$ under the Parity Conjecture) is $\gg_{a,\varepsilon} X^{\frac{1}{2}-\varepsilon}.$ We give infinitely many cases where $r(a)\geq 6$. These results can be viewed as an analogue of the classical estimate of Gouvêa and Mazur for the number of rank $\geq 2$ quadratic twists, where in addition we obtain ``log-power'' improvements to the Goldfeld-Gross-Zagier class number lower bound.

The Eichler integral of $E_2$ and $q$-brackets of $t$-hook functions

For functions $f: \mathcal{P}\rightarrow \mathbb{C}$ on partitions, Bloch and Okounkov defined a power series $\langle f\rangle_q$ that is the "weighted average" of $f$. As Fourier series in $q=e^{2πi z}$, such $q$-brackets generate the ring of quasimodular forms, and the modular forms that are powers of Dedekind's eta-function. Using work of Berndt and Han, we build modular objects from $$ f_t(λ):= t\sum_{h\in \mathcal{H}_t(λ)}\frac{1}{h^2}, $$ weighted sums over partition hook numbers that are multiples of $t$. We find that $\langle f_t \rangle_q$ is the Eichler integral of $(1-E_2(tz))/24,$ which we modify to construct a function $M_t(z)$ that enjoys weight 0 modularity properties. As a consequence, the non-modular Fourier series $$H_t^*(z):=\sum_{λ\in \mathcal{P}} f_t(λ)q^{|λ|-\frac{1}{24}} $$ inherits weight $-1/2$ modularity properties. These are sufficient to imply a Chowla-Selberg type result, generalizing the fact that weight $k$ algebraic modular forms evaluated at discriminant $D<0$ points $τ$ are algebraic multiples of $Ω_D^k,$ the $k$th power of the canonical period. If we let $Ψ(τ):=-πi \left(\frac{τ^2-3τ+1}{12τ}\right)-\frac{\log(τ)}{2},$ then for $t=1$ we prove that $$ H_1^*(-1/τ)-\frac{1}{\sqrt{-iτ}}\cdot H_1^*(τ)\in \overline{\mathbb{Q}}\cdot \frac{Ψ(τ)}{\sqrt{Ω_D}}.$$

Variations of Lehmer's Conjecture for Ramanujan's tau-function

We consider natural variants of Lehmer's unresolved conjecture that Ramanujan's tau-function never vanishes. Namely, for $n>1$ we prove that $$τ(n)\not \in \{\pm 1, \pm 3, \pm 5, \pm 7, \pm 691\}.$$ This result is an example of general theorems for newforms with trivial mod 2 residual Galois representation, which will appear in forthcoming work of the authors with Wei-Lun Tsai. Ramanujan's well-known congruences for $τ(n)$ allow for the simplified proof in these special cases. We make use of the theory of Lucas sequences, the Chabauty-Coleman method for hyperelliptic curves, and facts about certain Thue equations.

Higher Width Moonshine

\textit{Weak moonshine} for a finite group $G$ is the phenomenon where an infinite dimensional graded $G$-module $$V_G=\bigoplus_{n\gg-\infty}V_G(n)$$ has the property that its trace functions, known as McKay-Thompson series, are modular functions. Recent work by DeHority, Gonzalez, Vafa, and Van Peski established that weak moonshine holds for every finite group. Since weak moonshine only relies on character tables, which are not isomorphism class invariants, non-isomorphic groups can have the same McKay-Thompson series. We address this problem by extending weak moonshine to arbitrary width $s\in\mathbb{Z}^+$. For each $1\leq r\leq s$ and each irreducible character $χ_i$, we employ Frobenius' $r$-character extension $χ_i^{(r)} \colon G^{(r)}\rightarrow\mathbb{C}$ to define \textit{width $r$ McKay-Thompson series} for $V_G^{(r)}:=V_G\times\cdots\times V_G$ ($r$ copies) for each $r$-tuple in $G^{(r)}:=G\times\cdots\times G$ ($r$ copies). These series are modular functions which then reflect differences between $r$-character values. Furthermore, we establish orthogonality relations for the Frobenius $r$-characters, which dictate the compatibility of the extension of weak moonshine for $V_G$ to width $s$ weak moonshine.

Multiquadratic fields generated by characters of $A_n$

For a finite group $G$, let $K(G)$ denote the field generated over $\mathbb{Q}$ by its character values. For $n>24$, G. R. Robinson and J. G. Thompson proved that $$K(A_n)=\mathbb{Q}\left (\{ \sqrt{p^*} \ : \ p\leq n \ {\text{ an odd prime with } p\neq n-2}\}\right),$$ where $p^*:=(-1)^{\frac{p-1}{2}}p$. Confirming a speculation of Thompson, we show that arbitrary suitable multiquadratic fields are similarly generated by the values of $A_n$-characters restricted to elements whose orders are only divisible by ramified primes. To be more precise, we say that a $π$-number is a positive integer whose prime factors belong to a set of odd primes $π:= \{p_1, p_2,\dots, p_t\}$. Let $K_π(A_n)$ be the field generated by the values of $A_n$-characters for even permutations whose orders are $π$-numbers. If $t\geq 2$, then we determine a constant $N_π$ with the property that for all $n> N_π$, we have $$K_π(A_n)=\mathbb{Q}\left(\sqrt{p_1^*}, \sqrt{p_2^*},\dots, \sqrt{p_t^*}\right).$$

CM Evaluations of the Goswami-Sun Series

In recent work, Sun constructed two $q$-series, and he showed that their limits as $q\rightarrow1$ give new derivations of the Riemann-zeta values $ζ(2)=π^2/6$ and $ζ(4)=π^4/90$. Goswami extended these series to an infinite family of $q$-series, which he analogously used to obtain new derivations of the evaluations of $ζ(2k)\in\mathbb{Q}\cdotπ^{2k}$ for every positive integer $k$. Since it is well known that $Γ\left(\frac{1}{2}\right)=\sqrtπ$, it is natural to seek further specializations of these series which involve special values of the $Γ$-function. Thanks to the theory of complex multiplication, we show that the values of these series at all CM points $τ$, where $q:=e^{2πiτ}$, are algebraic multiples of specific ratios of $Γ$-values. In particular, classical formulas of Ramanujan allow us to explicitly evaluate these series as algebraic multiples of powers of $Γ\left(\frac{1}{4}\right)^4/π^3$ when $q=e^{-π}$, $e^{-2π}$.

A framework of Rogers-Ramanujan identities and their arithmetic properties

The two Rogers-Ramanujan $q$-series \[ \sum_{n=0}^{\infty}\frac{q^{n(n+σ)}}{(1-q)\cdots (1-q^n)}, \] where $σ=0,1$, play many roles in mathematics and physics. By the Rogers-Ramanujan identities, they are essentially modular functions. Their quotient, the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction, has the special property that its singular values are algebraic integral units. We find a framework which extends the Rogers-Ramanujan identities to doubly-infinite families of $q$-series identities. If $a\in\{1,2\}$ and $m,n\geq 1$, then we have \[ \sum_{\substack{λλ_1\leq m}} q^{a|λ|} P_{2λ}(1,q,q^2,\dots;q^n) =\textrm{"infinite product modular function"}, \] where the $P_λ(x_1,x_2,\dots;q)$ are Hall-Littlewood polynomials. These $q$-series are specialized characters of affine Kac--Moody algebras. Generalizing the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction, we prove in the case of $\textrm{A}_{2n}^{(2)}$ that the relevant $q$-series quotients are integral units.

A Note On Non-ordinary Primes

Suppose that $O_L$ is the ring of integers of a number field $L$, and suppose that $f(z)=\sum_{n=1}^\infty a_f(n)q^n\in S_k\cap O_L[[q]]$ (note: $q := e^{2πiz}$) is a normalized Hecke eigenform for $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$. We say that $f$ is non-ordinary at a prime $p$ if there is a prime ideal $\mathfrak{p}\subset O_L$ above $p$ for which $a_f(p)\equiv 0 \ (mod\ {\mathfrak{p}})$. For any finite set of primes $S$, we prove that there are normalized Hecke eigenforms which are non-ordinary for each $p\in S$. The proof is elementary and follows from a generalization of work of Choie, Kohnen and the third author.

Explorations in the theory of partition zeta functions

We introduce and survey results on two families of zeta functions connected to the multiplicative and additive theories of integer partitions. In the case of the multiplicative theory, we provide specialization formulas and results on the analytic continuations of these "partition zeta functions", find unusual formulas for the Riemann zeta function, prove identities for multiple zeta values, and see that some of the formulas allow for $p$-adic interpolation. The second family we study was anticipated by Manin and makes use of modular forms, functions which are intimately related to integer partitions by universal polynomial recurrence relations. We survey recent work on these zeta polynomials, including the proof of their Riemann Hypothesis.

Special values of shifted convolution Dirichlet series

In a recent important paper, Hoffstein and Hulse generalized the notion of Rankin-Selberg convolution $L$-functions by defining shifted convolution $L$-functions. We investigate symmetrized versions of their functions. Under certain mild conditions, we prove that the generating functions of certain special values are linear combinations of weakly holomorphic quasimodular forms and "mixed mock modular" forms.

The 1729 K3 Surface

We revisit the mathematics that Ramanujan developed in connection with the famous "taxi-cab" number $1729$. A study of his writings reveals that he had been studying Euler's diophantine equation $$ a^3+b^3=c^3+d^3. $$ It turns out that Ramanujan's work anticipated deep structures and phenomena which have become fundamental objects in arithmetic geometry and number theory. We find that he discovered a $K3$ surface with Picard number $18$, one which can be used to obtain infinitely many cubic twists over $\mathbb{Q}$ with rank $\geq 2$.

The Riemann Hypothesis For Period Polynomials Of Modular Forms

The period polynomial $r_f(z)$ for an even weight $k\geq 4$ newform $f\in S_k(Γ_0(N))$ is the generating function for the critical values of $L(f,s)$. It has a functional equation relating $r_f(z)$ to $r_f\left(-\frac{1}{Nz}\right)$. We prove the Riemann Hypothesis for these polynomials: that the zeros of $r_f(z)$ lie on the circle $|z|=\frac{1}{\sqrt{N}}$ . We prove that these zeros are equidistributed when either $k$ or $N$ is large.

Zeta-polynomials for modular form periods

Answering problems of Manin, we use the critical $L$-values of even weight $k\geq 4$ newforms $f\in S_k(Γ_0(N))$ to define zeta-polynomials $Z_f(s)$ which satisfy the functional equation $Z_f(s)=\pm Z_f(1-s)$, and which obey the Riemann Hypothesis: if $Z_f(ρ)=0$, then $\operatorname{Re}(ρ)=1/2$. The zeros of the $Z_f(s)$ on the critical line in $t$-aspect are distributed in a manner which is somewhat analogous to those of classical zeta-functions. These polynomials are assembled using (signed) Stirling numbers and "weighted moments" of critical values $L$-values. In analogy with Ehrhart polynomials which keep track of integer points in polytopes, the $Z_f(s)$ keep track of arithmetic information. Assuming the Bloch--Kato Tamagawa Number Conjecture, they encode the arithmetic of a combinatorial arithmetic-geometric object which we call the "Bloch-Kato complex" for $f$. Loosely speaking, these are graded sums of weighted moments of orders of Šafarevič-Tate groups associated to the Tate twists of the modular motives.

$p$-adic properties of modular shifted convolution Dirichlet series

Hoffstein and Hulse recently introduced the notion of shifted convolution Dirichlet series for pairs of modular forms $f_1$ and $f_2$. The second two authors investigated certain special values of symmetrized sums of such functions, numbers which are generally expected to be mysterious transcendental numbers. They proved that the generating functions of these values in $h$-aspect are linear combinations of mixed mock modular forms and quasimodular forms. Here we examine the special cases when $f_1=f_2$ where, in addition, there is a prime $p$ for which $p^2$ divides the level. We prove that the mixed mock modular form is a linear combination of at most two weight 2 weakly holomorphic $p$-adic modular forms.

Classical and Umbral Moonshine: Connections and $p$-adic Properties

The classical theory of monstrous moonshine describes the unexpected connection between the representation theory of the monster group $M$, the largest of the simple sporadic groups, and certain modular functions, called Hauptmodln. In particular, the $n$-th Fourier coefficient of Klein's $j$-function is the dimension of the grade $n$ part of a special infinite dimensional representation $V$ of the monster group. More generally the coefficients of Hauptmoduln are graded traces $T_g$ of $g \in M$ acting on $V$. Similar phenomena have been shown to hold for the Matthieu group $M_{24}$, but instead of modular functions, mock modular forms must be used. This has been conjecturally generalized even further, to umbral moonshine, which associates to each of the 23 Niemeier lattices a finite group, infinite dimensional representation, and mock modular form. We use generalized Borcherds products to relate monstrous moonshine and umbral moonshine. Namely, we use mock modular forms from umbral moonshine to construct via generalized Borcherds products rational functions of the Hauptmoduln $T_g$ from monstrous moonshine. This allows us to associate to each pure $A$-type Niemeier lattice a conjugacy class $g$ of the monster group, and gives rise to identities relating dimensions of representations from umbral moonshine to values of $T_g$. We also show that the logarithmic derivatives of the Borcherds products are $p$-adic modular forms for certain primes $p$ and describe some of the resulting properties of their coefficients modulo $p$.

Moonshine

Monstrous moonshine relates distinguished modular functions to the representation theory of the monster. The celebrated observations that 196884=1+196883 and 21493760=1+196883+21296876, etc., illustrate the case of the modular function j-744, whose coefficients turn out to be sums of the dimensions of the 194 irreducible representations of the monster. Such formulas are dictated by the structure of the graded monstrous moonshine modules. Recent works in moonshine suggest deep relations between number theory and physics. Number theoretic Kloosterman sums have reappeared in quantum gravity, and mock modular forms have emerged as candidates for the computation of black hole degeneracies. This paper is a survey of past and present research on moonshine. We also compute the quantum dimensions of the monster orbifold, and obtain exact formulas for the multiplicities of the irreducible components of the moonshine modules. These formulas imply that such multiplicities are asymptotically proportional to dimensions.

The Jack Daniels Problem

In 1975 Ogg offered a bottle of Jack Daniels for an explanation of the fact that the prime divisors of the order of the monster are the primes p for which the characteristic p supersingular j-invariants are all defined over the field with p elements. This coincidence is often suggested to be the first hint of monstrous moonshine, the deep unexpected interplay between the monster and modular functions. We revisit Ogg's problem, and we point out (using existing tools) that the moonshine functions for order p elements give the set of characteristic p supersingular j-invariants (apart from 0 and 1728). Furthermore, we discuss this coincidence of the two seemingly unrelated sets of primes using the first principles of moonshine.

Weierstrass mock modular forms and elliptic curves

Mock modular forms, which give the theoretical framework for Ramanujan's enigmatic mock theta functions, play many roles in mathematics. We study their role in the context of modular parameterizations of elliptic curves $E/\mathbb{Q}$. We show that mock modular forms which arise from Weierstrass $ζ$-functions encode the central $L$-values and $L$-derivatives which occur in the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer Conjecture. By defining a theta lift using a kernel recently studied by Hövel, we obtain canonical weight 1/2 harmonic Maass forms whose Fourier coefficients encode the vanishing of these values for the quadratic twists of $E$. We employ results of Bruinier and the third author, which builds on seminal work of Gross, Kohnen, Shimura, Waldspurger, and Zagier. We also obtain $p$-adic formulas for the corresponding weight 2 newform using the action of the Hecke algebra on the Weierstrass mock modular form.

SO(3)-Donaldson invariants of CP^2 and Mock Theta Functions

We compute the Moore-Witten regularized u-plane integral on CP^2, and we confirm their conjecture that it is the generating function for the SO(3)-Donaldson invariants of CP^2. We prove this conjecture using the theory of mock theta functions and harmonic Maass forms. We also derive further such generating functions for the SO(3)-Donaldson invariants with 2N_f massless monopoles using the geometry of certain rational elliptic surfaces (N_f=0,2,3,4). We show that the partition function for N_f=4 is nearly modular. When combined with one of Ramanujan's mock theta functions, we obtain a weight 1/2 modular form. This fact is central to the proof of the conjecture.

Algebraic formulas for the coefficients of half-integral weight harmonic weak Maass forms

We prove that the coefficients of certain weight -1/2 harmonic Maass forms are traces of singular moduli for weak Maass forms. To prove this theorem, we construct a theta lift from spaces of weight -2 harmonic weak Maass forms to spaces of weight -1/2 vector-valued harmonic weak Maass forms on Mp_2(Z), a result which is of independent interest. We then prove a general theorem which guarantees (with bounded denominator) when such Maass singular moduli are algebraic. As an example of these results, we derive a formula for the partition function p(n) as a finite sum of algebraic numbers which lie in the usual discriminant -24n+1 ring class field. We indicate how these results extend to general weights. In particular, we illustrate how one can compute theta lifts for general weights by making use of the Kudla-Millson kernel and Maass differential operators.
