Jacobi forms with CM and applications

We define Jacobi forms with complex multiplication. Analogous to modular forms with complex multiplication, they are constructed from Hecke characters of the associated imaginary quadratic field. From this construction we obtain a Jacobi form which specializes to η(τ)26η(τ)^{26} which we present to highlight an open question of Dyson and Serre. We give other examples and applications of Jacobi forms with complex multiplication including constructing theta blocks associated to elliptic curves with complex multiplication and new families of congruences and cranks for certain partition functions.

Eichler integrals of Eisenstein series as qq-brackets of weighted tt-hook functions on partitions

We consider the tt-hook functions on partitions fa,t:P→Cf_{a,t}: \mathcal{P}\rightarrow \mathbb{C} defined by fa,t(λ):=ta−1∑h∈Ht(λ)1ha, f_{a,t}(λ):=t^{a-1} \sum_{h\in \mathcal{H}_t(λ)}\frac{1}{h^a}, where Ht(λ)\mathcal{H}_t(λ) is the multiset of partition hook numbers that are multiples of tt. The Bloch-Okounkov qq-brackets ⟨fa,t⟩q\langle f_{a,t}\rangle_q include Eichler integrals of the classical Eisenstein series. For even a≥2a\geq 2, we show that these qq-brackets are natural pieces of weight 2−a2-a sesquiharmonic and harmonic Maass forms, while for odd a≤−1,a\leq -1, we show that they are holomorphic quantum modular forms. We use these results to obtain new formulas of Chowla-Selberg type, and asymptotic expansions involving values of the Riemann zeta-function and Bernoulli numbers. We make use of work of Berndt, Han and Ji, and Zagier.

Fields generated by characters of finite linear groups

In previous work, the authors confirmed the speculation of J. G. Thompson that certain multiquadratic fields are generated by specified character values of sufficiently large alternating groups AnA_n. Here we address the natural generalization of this speculation to the finite general linear groups GLm(Fq)\mathrm{GL}_m\left(\mathbb{F}_q\right) and SL2(Fq)\mathrm{SL}_2\left(\mathbb{F}_q\right).

Jensen Polynomials for the Riemann Xi Function

We investigate Riemann's xi function ξ(s):=12s(s−1)π−s2Γ(s2)ζ(s)ξ(s):=\frac{1}{2}s(s-1)π^{-\frac{s}{2}}Γ(\frac{s}{2})ζ(s) (here ζ(s)ζ(s) is the Riemann zeta function). The Riemann Hypothesis (RH) asserts that if ξ(s)=0ξ(s)=0, then Re(s)=12\mathrm{Re}(s)=\frac{1}{2}. Pólya proved that RH is equivalent to the hyperbolicity of the Jensen polynomials Jd,n(X)J^{d,n}(X) constructed from certain Taylor coefficients of ξ(s)ξ(s). For each d≥1d\geq 1, recent work proves that Jd,n(X)J^{d,n}(X) is hyperbolic for sufficiently large nn. Here we make this result effective. Moreover, we show how the low-lying zeros of the derivatives ξ(n)(s)ξ^{(n)}(s) influence the hyperbolicity of Jd,n(X)J^{d,n}(X).

The Riemann Hypothesis for period polynomials of Hilbert modular forms

There have been a number of recent works on the theory of period polynomials and their zeros. In particular, zeros of period polynomials have been shown to satisfy a "Riemann Hypothesis" in both classical settings and for cohomological versions extending the classical setting to the case of higher derivatives of LL-functions. There thus appears to be a general phenomenon behind these phenomena. In this paper, we explore further generalizations by defining a natural analogue for Hilbert modular forms. We then prove that similar Riemann Hypotheses hold in this situation as well.

Multiquadratic fields generated by characters of AnA_n

For a finite group GG, let K(G)K(G) denote the field generated over Q\mathbb{Q} by its character values. For n>24n>24, G. R. Robinson and J. G. Thompson proved that K(An)=Q({p∗ : p≤n  an odd prime with p≠n−2}),K(A_n)=\mathbb{Q}\left (\{ \sqrt{p^*} \ : \ p\leq n \ {\text{ an odd prime with } p\neq n-2}\}\right), where p∗:=(−1)p−12pp^*:=(-1)^{\frac{p-1}{2}}p. Confirming a speculation of Thompson, we show that arbitrary suitable multiquadratic fields are similarly generated by the values of AnA_n-characters restricted to elements whose orders are only divisible by ramified primes. To be more precise, we say that a ππ-number is a positive integer whose prime factors belong to a set of odd primes π:={p1,p2,…,pt}π:= \{p_1, p_2,\dots, p_t\}. Let Kπ(An)K_π(A_n) be the field generated by the values of AnA_n-characters for even permutations whose orders are ππ-numbers. If t≥2t\geq 2, then we determine a constant NπN_π with the property that for all n>Nπn> N_π, we have Kπ(An)=Q(p1∗,p2∗,…,pt∗).K_π(A_n)=\mathbb{Q}\left(\sqrt{p_1^*}, \sqrt{p_2^*},\dots, \sqrt{p_t^*}\right).

Congruences for powers of the partition function

Let p−t(n)p_{-t}(n) denote the number of partitions of nn into tt colors. In analogy with Ramanujan's work on the partition function, Lin recently proved in \cite{Lin} that p−3(11n+7)≡0(mod11)p_{-3}(11n+7)\equiv0\pmod{11} for every integer nn. Such congruences, those of the form p−t(ℓn+a)≡0(modℓ)p_{-t}(\ell n + a) \equiv 0 \pmod {\ell}, were previously studied by Kiming and Olsson. If ℓ≥5\ell \geq 5 is prime and −t∉{ℓ−1,ℓ−3}-t \not \in \{\ell - 1, \ell -3\}, then such congruences satisfy 24a≡−t(modℓ)24a \equiv -t \pmod {\ell}. Inspired by Lin's example, we obtain natural infinite families of such congruences. If ℓ≡2(mod3)\ell\equiv2\pmod{3} (resp. ℓ≡3(mod4)\ell\equiv3\pmod{4} and ℓ≡11(mod12)\ell\equiv11\pmod{12}) is prime and r∈{4,8,14}r\in\{4,8,14\} (resp. r∈{6,10}r\in\{6,10\} and r=26r=26), then for t=ℓs−rt=\ell s-r, where s≥0s\geq0, we have that \begin{equation*} p_{-t}\left(\ell n+\frac{r(\ell^2-1)}{24}-\ell\Big\lfloor\frac{r(\ell^2-1)}{24\ell}\Big\rfloor\right)\equiv0\pmod{\ell}. \end{equation*} Moreover, we exhibit infinite families where such congruences cannot hold.

Conjugacy growth series for wreath product finitary symmetric groups

In recent work, Bacher and de la Harpe define and study conjugacy growth series for finitary permutation groups. In two subsequent papers, Cotron, Dicks, and Fleming study the congruence properties of some of these series. We define a new family of conjugacy growth series for the finitary alternating wreath product that are related to sums of modular forms of integer and half-integral weights, the so-called \textit{mixed weight modular forms}. The previous works motivate the study of congruences for these series. We prove that congruences exist modulo powers of all primes p≥5p \geq 5. Furthermore, we lay out a method for studying congruence properties for sums of mixed weight modular forms in general.

Shifted distinct-part partition identities in arithmetic progressions

The partition function p(n)p(n), which counts the number of partitions of a positive integer nn, is widely studied. Here, we study partition functions pS(n)p_S(n) that count partitions of nn into distinct parts satisfying certain congruence conditions. A shifted partition identity is an identity of the form pS1(n−H)=pS2(n)p_{S_1}(n-H) = p_{S_2}(n) for all nn in some arithmetic progression. Several identities of this type have been discovered, including two infinite families found by Alladi. In this paper, we use the theory of modular functions to determine the necessary and sufficient conditions for such an identity to exist. In addition, for two specific cases, we extend Alladi's theorem to other arithmetic progressions.
