Generalized Frobenius partitions, Motzkin paths, and Jacobi forms

We show how Andrews' generating functions for generalized Frobenius partitions can be understood within the theory of Eichler and Zagier as specific coefficients of certain Jacobi forms. This reformulation leads to a recursive process which yields explicit formulas for the generalized Frobenius partition generating functions in terms of infinite $q$-products. In particular, we show that specific examples of our result easily reestablish previously known formulas, and we describe new congruences, both conjectural and proven, in additional cases. The modular structure of Jacobi forms indicates that \emph{all} of the coefficients of the forms are of interest. We give a combinatorial definition of these "companion series" and explore their combinatorics via the counting of Motzkin paths.

Infinite families of crank functions, Stanton-type conjectures, and unimodality

Dyson's rank function and the Andrews--Garvan crank function famously give combinatorial witnesses for Ramanujan's partition function congruences modulo 5, 7, and 11. While these functions can be used to show that the corresponding sets of partitions split into 5, 7, or 11 equally sized sets, one may ask how to make the resulting bijections between partitions organized by rank or crank combinatorially explicit. Stanton recently made conjectures which aim to uncover a deeper combinatorial structure along these lines, where it turns out that minor modifications of the rank and crank are required. Here, we prove two of these conjectures. We also provide abstract criteria for quotients of polynomials by certain cyclotomic polynomials to have non-negative coefficients based on unimodality and symmetry. Furthermore, we extend Stanton's conjecture to an infinite family of cranks. This suggests further applications to other combinatorial objects. We also discuss numerical evidence for our conjectures, connections with other analytic conjectures such as the distribution of partition ranks.

L-values of harmonic Maass forms

Bruinier, Funke, and Imamoglu have proved a formula for what can philosophically be called the "central $L$-value" of the modular $j$-invariant. Previously, this had been heuristically suggested by Zagier. Here, we interpret this "$L$-value" as the value of an actual $L$-series, and extend it to all integral arguments and to a large class of harmonic Maass forms which includes all weakly holomorphic cusp forms. The context and relation to previously defined $L$-series for weakly holomorphic and harmonic Maass forms are discussed. These formulas suggest possible arithmetic or geometric meaning of $L$-values in these situations. The key ingredient of the proof is to apply a recent theory of Lee, Raji, and the authors to describe harmonic Maass $L$-functions using test functions.

Limiting Betti distributions of Hilbert schemes on $n$ points

Hausel and Rodriguez-Villegas recently observed that work of Göttsche, combined with a classical result of Erdős and Lehner on integer partitions, implies that the limiting Betti distribution for the Hilbert schemes $(\mathbb{C}^2)^{[n]}$ on $n$ points, as $n\rightarrow +\infty,$ is a \textit{Gumbel distribution}. In view of this example, they ask for further such Betti distributions. We answer this question for the quasihomogeneous Hilbert schemes $((\mathbb{C}^2)^{[n]})^{T_{α,β}}$ that are cut out by torus actions. We prove that their limiting distributions are also of Gumbel type. To obtain this result, we combine work of Buryak, Feigin, and Nakajima on these Hilbert schemes with our generalization of the result of Erdős and Lehner, which gives the distribution of the number of parts in partitions that are multiples of a fixed integer $A\geq 2.$ Furthermore, if $p_k(A;n)$ denotes the number of partitions of $n$ with exactly $k$ parts that are multiples of $A$, then we obtain the asymptotic $$ p_k(A,n)\sim \frac{24^{\frac k2-\frac14}(n-Ak)^{\frac k2-\frac34}}{\sqrt2\left(1-\frac1A\right)^{\frac k2-\frac14}k!A^{k+\frac12}(2π)^k}e^{2π\sqrt{\frac1{6}\left(1-\frac1A\right)(n-Ak)}}, $$ a result which is of independent interest.

Turán inequalities for the plane partition function

Heim, Neuhauser, and Tröger recently established some inequalities for MacMahon's plane partition function $\mathrm{PL}(n)$ that generalize known results for Euler's partition function $p(n)$. They also conjectured that $\mathrm{PL}(n)$ is log-concave for all $n\geq 12.$ We prove this conjecture. Moreover, for every $d\geq 1$, we prove their speculation that $\mathrm{PL}(n)$ satisfies the degree $d$ Turán inequality for sufficiently large $n$. The case where $d=2$ is the case of log-concavity.

Jensen Polynomials for the Riemann Xi Function

We investigate Riemann's xi function $ξ(s):=\frac{1}{2}s(s-1)π^{-\frac{s}{2}}Γ(\frac{s}{2})ζ(s)$ (here $ζ(s)$ is the Riemann zeta function). The Riemann Hypothesis (RH) asserts that if $ξ(s)=0$, then $\mathrm{Re}(s)=\frac{1}{2}$. Pólya proved that RH is equivalent to the hyperbolicity of the Jensen polynomials $J^{d,n}(X)$ constructed from certain Taylor coefficients of $ξ(s)$. For each $d\geq 1$, recent work proves that $J^{d,n}(X)$ is hyperbolic for sufficiently large $n$. Here we make this result effective. Moreover, we show how the low-lying zeros of the derivatives $ξ^{(n)}(s)$ influence the hyperbolicity of $J^{d,n}(X)$.

The Riemann Hypothesis for period polynomials of Hilbert modular forms

There have been a number of recent works on the theory of period polynomials and their zeros. In particular, zeros of period polynomials have been shown to satisfy a "Riemann Hypothesis" in both classical settings and for cohomological versions extending the classical setting to the case of higher derivatives of $L$-functions. There thus appears to be a general phenomenon behind these phenomena. In this paper, we explore further generalizations by defining a natural analogue for Hilbert modular forms. We then prove that similar Riemann Hypotheses hold in this situation as well.

Periodicities for Taylor coefficients of half-integral weight modular forms

Congruences of Fourier coefficients of modular forms have long been an object of central study. By comparison, the arithmetic of other expansions of modular forms, in particular Taylor expansions around points in the upper-half plane, has been much less studied. Recently, Romik made a conjecture about the periodicity of coefficients around $τ=i$ of the classical Jacobi theta function. Here, we prove this conjecture and generalize the phenomenon observed by Romik to a general class of modular forms of half-integral weight.

Explorations in the theory of partition zeta functions

We introduce and survey results on two families of zeta functions connected to the multiplicative and additive theories of integer partitions. In the case of the multiplicative theory, we provide specialization formulas and results on the analytic continuations of these "partition zeta functions", find unusual formulas for the Riemann zeta function, prove identities for multiple zeta values, and see that some of the formulas allow for $p$-adic interpolation. The second family we study was anticipated by Manin and makes use of modular forms, functions which are intimately related to integer partitions by universal polynomial recurrence relations. We survey recent work on these zeta polynomials, including the proof of their Riemann Hypothesis.

Formulas for Jacobi forms and generalized Frobenius partitions

Since their introduction by Andrews, generalized Frobenius partitions have interested a number of authors, many of whom have worked out explicit formulas for their generating functions in specific cases. This has uncovered interesting combinatorial structure and led to proofs of a number of congruences. In this paper, we show how Andrews' generating functions can be cast in the framework of Eichler and Zagier's Jacobi forms. This reformulation allows us to compute explicit formulas for the generalized Frobenius partition generating functions (and in fact provides formulas for further functions of potential combinatorial interest), and it leads to a recursion formula to calculate them in terms of infinite $q$-products.

Zeta-polynomials for modular form periods

Answering problems of Manin, we use the critical $L$-values of even weight $k\geq 4$ newforms $f\in S_k(Γ_0(N))$ to define zeta-polynomials $Z_f(s)$ which satisfy the functional equation $Z_f(s)=\pm Z_f(1-s)$, and which obey the Riemann Hypothesis: if $Z_f(ρ)=0$, then $\operatorname{Re}(ρ)=1/2$. The zeros of the $Z_f(s)$ on the critical line in $t$-aspect are distributed in a manner which is somewhat analogous to those of classical zeta-functions. These polynomials are assembled using (signed) Stirling numbers and "weighted moments" of critical values $L$-values. In analogy with Ehrhart polynomials which keep track of integer points in polytopes, the $Z_f(s)$ keep track of arithmetic information. Assuming the Bloch--Kato Tamagawa Number Conjecture, they encode the arithmetic of a combinatorial arithmetic-geometric object which we call the "Bloch-Kato complex" for $f$. Loosely speaking, these are graded sums of weighted moments of orders of Šafarevič-Tate groups associated to the Tate twists of the modular motives.

A new construction of Eisenstein's completion of the Weierstrass zeta function

In the theory of elliptic functions and elliptic curves, the Weierstrass $zeta$ function (which is essentially an antiderivative of the Weierstrass $\wp$ function) plays a prominent role. Although it is not an elliptic function, Eisenstein constructed a simple (non-holomorphic) completion of this form which is doubly periodic. This theorem has begun to play an important role in the theory of harmonic Maass forms, and was crucial to work of Guerzhoy as well as Alfes, Griffin, Ono, and the author. In particular, this simple completion of $ζ$ provides a powerful method to construct harmonic Maass forms of weight zero which serve as canonical lifts under the differential operator $ξ_{0}$ of weight 2 cusp forms, and this has been shown in to have deep applications to determining vanishing criteria for central values and derivatives of twisted Hasse-Weil $L$-functions for elliptic curves. Here we offer a new and motivated proof of Eisenstein's theorem, relying on the basic theory of differential operators for Jacobi forms together with a classical identity for the first quasi-period of a lattice. A quick inspection of the proof shows that it also allows one to easily construct more general non-holomorphic elliptic functions.

Classical and Umbral Moonshine: Connections and $p$-adic Properties

The classical theory of monstrous moonshine describes the unexpected connection between the representation theory of the monster group $M$, the largest of the simple sporadic groups, and certain modular functions, called Hauptmodln. In particular, the $n$-th Fourier coefficient of Klein's $j$-function is the dimension of the grade $n$ part of a special infinite dimensional representation $V$ of the monster group. More generally the coefficients of Hauptmoduln are graded traces $T_g$ of $g \in M$ acting on $V$. Similar phenomena have been shown to hold for the Matthieu group $M_{24}$, but instead of modular functions, mock modular forms must be used. This has been conjecturally generalized even further, to umbral moonshine, which associates to each of the 23 Niemeier lattices a finite group, infinite dimensional representation, and mock modular form. We use generalized Borcherds products to relate monstrous moonshine and umbral moonshine. Namely, we use mock modular forms from umbral moonshine to construct via generalized Borcherds products rational functions of the Hauptmoduln $T_g$ from monstrous moonshine. This allows us to associate to each pure $A$-type Niemeier lattice a conjugacy class $g$ of the monster group, and gives rise to identities relating dimensions of representations from umbral moonshine to values of $T_g$. We also show that the logarithmic derivatives of the Borcherds products are $p$-adic modular forms for certain primes $p$ and describe some of the resulting properties of their coefficients modulo $p$.

Congruences for Taylor expansions of quantum modular forms

Recently, a beautiful paper of Andrews and Sellers has established linear congruences for the Fishburn numbers modulo an infinite set of primes. Since then, a number of authors have proven refined results, for example, extending all of these congruences to arbitrary powers of the primes involved. Here, we take a different perspective and explain the general theory of such congruences in the context of an important class of quantum modular forms. As one example, we obtain an infinite series of combinatorial sequences connected to the "half-derivatives" of the Andrews-Gordon functions and with Kashaev's invariant on $(2m+1,2)$ torus knots, and we prove conditions under which the sequences satisfy linear congruences modulo at least $50\%$ of primes of primes.

Half-integral weight Eichler integrals and quantum modular forms

In analogy with the classical theory of Eichler integrals for integral weight modular forms, Lawrence and Zagier considered examples of Eichler integrals of certain half-integral weight modular forms. These served as early prototypes of a new type of object, which Zagier later called a quantum modular form. Since then, a number of others have studied similar examples. Here we develop the theory in a general context, giving rise to a well-defined class of quantum modular forms. Since elements of this class show up frequently in examples of combinatorial and number theoretical interest, we propose the study of the general properties of this space of quantum modular forms. We conclude by giving a set of fundamental questions concerning this space of objects which merit further study.

Identities for generalized Appell functions and the blow-up formula

In this paper, we prove identities for a class of generalized Appell functions which are based on the $\operatorname{A}_2$ root lattice. The identities are reminiscent of periodicity relations for the classical Appell function, and are proven using only analytic properties of the functions. Moreover they are a consequence of the blow-up formula for generating functions of invariants of moduli spaces of semi-stable sheaves of rank 3 on rational surfaces. Our proof confirms that in the latter context, different routes to compute the generating function (using the blow-up formula and wall-crossing) do arrive at identical $q$-series. The proof also gives a clear procedure for how to prove analogous identities for generalized Appell functions appearing in generating functions for sheaves with rank $r>3$.

Maass-Jacobi Poincaré series and Mathieu Moonshine

Mathieu moonshine attaches a weak Jacobi form of weight zero and index one to each conjugacy class of the largest sporadic simple group of Mathieu. We introduce a modification of this assignment, whereby weak Jacobi forms are replaced by semi-holomorphic Maass-Jacobi forms of weight one and index two. We prove the convergence of some Maass-Jacobi Poincaré series of weight one, and then use these to characterize the semi-holomorphic Maass-Jacobi forms arising from the largest Mathieu group.

Negative index Jacobi forms and quantum modular forms

In this paper, we consider the Fourier coefficients of a special class of meromorphic Jaocbi forms of negative index. Much recent work has been done on such coefficients in the case of Jacobi forms of positive index, but almost nothing is known for Jacobi forms of negative index. In this paper we show, from two different perspectives, that their Fourier coefficients have a simple decomposition in terms of partial theta functions. The first perspective uses the language of Lie super algebras, and the second applies the theory of elliptic functions. In particular, we find a new infinite family of rank-crank type PDEs generalizing the famous example of Atkin and Garvan. We then describe the modularity properties of these coefficients, showing that they are "mixed partial theta functions", along the way determining a new class of quantum modular partial theta functions which is of independent interest.

On class invariants for non-holomorphic modular functions and a question of Bruinier and Ono

Recently, Bruinier and Ono found an algebraic formula for the partition function in terms of traces of singular moduli of a certain non-holomorphic modular function. In this paper we prove that the rational polynomial having these singuar moduli as zeros is (essentially) irreducible, settling a question of Bruinier and Ono. The proof uses careful analytic estimates together with some related work of Dewar and Murty, as well as extensive numerical calculations of Sutherland.

On the Fourier coefficients of negative index meromorphic Jacobi forms

In this paper, we consider the Fourier coefficients of meromorphic Jacobi forms of negative index. This extends recent work of Creutzig and the first two authors for the special case of Kac-Wakimoto characters which occur naturally in Lie theory, and yields, as easy corollaries, many important PDEs arising in combinatorics such as the famous rank-crank PDE of Atkin and Garvan. Moreover, we discuss the relation of our results to partial theta functions and quantum modular forms as introducted by Zagier, which together with previous work on positive index meromorphic Jacobi forms illuminates the general structure of the Fourier coefficients of meromorphic Jacobi forms.

On the modularity of certain functions from the Gromov-Witten theory of elliptic orbifolds

In this paper, we study modularity of several functions which naturally arose in a recent paper of Lau and Zhou on open Gromov-Witten potentials of elliptic orbifolds. They derived a number of examples of indefinite theta functions, and we provide modular completions for several such functions which involve more complicated objects than ordinary modular forms. In particular, we give new closed formulas for special indefinite theta functions of type $(1,2)$ in terms of products of mock modular forms. This formula is also of independent interest.

Radial limits of mock theta functions

Inspired by the original definition of mock theta functions by Ramanujan, a number of authors have considered the question of explicitly determining their behavior at the cusps. Moreover, these examples have been connected to important objects such as quantum modular forms and ranks and cranks by Folsom, Ono, and Rhoades. Here we solve the general problem of understanding Ramanujan's definition explicitly for any weight $\frac12$ mock theta function, answering a question of Rhoades. Moreover, as a side product, our results give a large, explicit family of modular forms.

Weierstrass mock modular forms and elliptic curves

Mock modular forms, which give the theoretical framework for Ramanujan's enigmatic mock theta functions, play many roles in mathematics. We study their role in the context of modular parameterizations of elliptic curves $E/\mathbb{Q}$. We show that mock modular forms which arise from Weierstrass $ζ$-functions encode the central $L$-values and $L$-derivatives which occur in the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer Conjecture. By defining a theta lift using a kernel recently studied by Hövel, we obtain canonical weight 1/2 harmonic Maass forms whose Fourier coefficients encode the vanishing of these values for the quadratic twists of $E$. We employ results of Bruinier and the third author, which builds on seminal work of Gross, Kohnen, Shimura, Waldspurger, and Zagier. We also obtain $p$-adic formulas for the corresponding weight 2 newform using the action of the Hecke algebra on the Weierstrass mock modular form.

A "Strange" Vector-Valued Quantum Modular Form

Since their definition in 2010 by Zagier, quantum modular forms have been connected to numerous different topics such as strongly unimodal sequences, ranks, cranks, and asymptotics for mock theta functions near roots of unity. These are functions that are not necessarily defined on the upper half plane but a priori are defined only on a subset of $\Q$, and whose obstruction to modularity is some analytically "nice" function. Motivated by Zagier's example of the quantum modularity of Kontsevich's "strange" function $F(q)$, we revisit work of Andrews, Jimenez-Urroz, and Ono to construct a natural vector-valued quantum modular form whose components are similarly "strange".

An Improved Bound Towards a Conjecture of Serre on Surjective Galois Representations

Suppose that $E$ is an elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ without complex multiplication and with conductor $N$. For each positive integer $m$, the action of the absolute Galois group $G_{\mathbb{Q}}=\operatorname{Gal}(\bar{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})$ on the torsion points over $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$ gives rise to a representation of $G_\mathbb{Q}$. A celebrated paper of Serre shows that this representation is surjective for all sufficiently large primes; the other primes are termed \emph{exceptional}. Serre conjectures that there are no exceptional primes $\ell>37$ for any non CM elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$. The best result in this direction is due to Cojocaru, who proves that the largest exceptional prime $\ell_0\ll_ε N^{1+ε}$. In this paper we lower the exponent on the bound to obtain $\ell_0\ll_ε N_0^{1/4}+ε}$, where $N_0$ is the product of primes of bad reduction. If $E$ has no places of multiplicative reduction, then we have $\ell_0\ll_εN^{1/8}+ε}$. Assuming the Frey-Szpiro conjecture, we have that $\ell_0\ll_εN^{1/8}+ε}$ in general. Our main methods include the Rankin-Selberg method and the classical work on distribution of quadratic residues.

Integrality Properties of the CM-values of Certain Weak Maass Forms

In a recent paper, Bruinier and Ono prove that the coefficients of certain weight -1/2 harmonic Maass forms are traces of singular moduli for weak Maass forms. In particular, for the partition function $p(n)$, they prove that \[p(n)=\frac{1}{24n-1} \sum P(α_Q),\] where $P$ is a weak Maass form and $α_Q$ ranges over a finite set of discriminant $-24n+1$ CM points. Moreover, they show that $6 (24n-1) P(α_Q)$ is always an algebraic integer, and they conjecture that $(24n-1) P(α_Q)$ is always an algebraic integer. Here we prove a general theorem which implies this conjecture as a corollary.

Progress Towards Counting D_5 Quintic Fields

Let $N(5,D_5,X)$ be the number of quintic number fields whose Galois closure has Galois group $D_5$ and whose discriminant is bounded by $X$. By a conjecture of Malle, we expect that $N(5,D_5,X) \sim C X^{1/2}$ for some constant $C$. The best known upper bound is $N(5,D_5,X)\ll X^{3/4 + ε}$, and we show this could be improved by counting points on a certain variety defined by a norm equation; computer calculations give strong evidence that this number is $\ll X^{2/3}$. Finally, we show how such norm equations can be helpful by reinterpreting an earlier proof of Wong on upper bounds for $A_4$ quartic fields in terms of a similar norm equation.

Upper Bounds for the Number of Number Fields with Alternating Galois Group

We study the number $N(n, A_n, X)$ of number fields of degree $n$ whose Galois closure has Galois group $A_n$ and whose discriminant is bounded by $X$. By a conjecture of Malle, we expect that $N(n, A_n, X) \sim C_n X^{1/2} (\log X)^{b_n}$, for constants $b_n$ and $C_n$. For $5 < n < 84394$, the best known upper bound is $N(n, A_n, X) \ll X^{\frac{n + 2}{4}}$; this bound follows from Schmidt's Theorem, which implies there are $\ll X^{\frac{n + 2}{4}}$ number fields of degree $n$. (For $n > 84393$, there are better bounds due to Ellenberg and Venkatesh.) We show, using the important work of Pila on counting integral points on curves, that $N(n, A_n, X) \ll X^{\frac{n^2 - 2}{4(n - 1)}+ε}$, thereby improving the best previous exponent by approximately 1/4 for $5 < n < 84394$.
