Uniform boundedness for finite Morse index solutions to supercritical semilinear elliptic equations

We consider finite Morse index solutions to semilinear elliptic questions, and we investigate their smoothness. It is well-known that: - For $n=2$, there exist Morse index $1$ solutions whose $L^\infty$ norm goes to infinity. - For $n \geq 3$, uniform boundedness holds in the subcritical case for power-type nonlinearities, while for critical nonlinearities the boundedness of the Morse index does not prevent blow-up in $L^\infty$. In this paper, we investigate the case of general supercritical nonlinearities inside convex domains, and we prove an interior a priori $L^\infty$ bound for finite Morse index solution in the sharp dimensional range $3\leq n\leq 9$. As a corollary, we obtain uniform bounds for finite Morse index solutions to the Gelfand problem constructed via the continuity method. [In the previous version, the proof of Proposition A.1 was not complete. Indeed, Lemma A.2 was proved only for estimates centered at the origin, and Footnote 9 claimed that the same estimates hold at every point; however, no complete proof was provided for this extension. In the current version, Lemma A.2 is restricted to estimates at the origin, and the boundedness at arbitrary points is obtained by combining the results in [9] with the new version of Lemma A.2. This avoids the need to extend Lemma A.2 to arbitrary centers and yields a complete proof of Proposition A.1.]

A quantitative stability result for the Prékopa-Leindler inequality for arbitrary measurable functions

We prove that if a triplet of functions satisfies almost equality in the Prékopa-Leindler inequality, then these functions are close to a common log-concave function, up to multiplication and rescaling. Our result holds for general measurable functions in all dimensions, and provides a quantitative stability estimate with computable constants.

Complete classification of global solutions to the obstacle problem

The characterization of global solutions to the obstacle problems in $\mathbb{R}^N$, or equivalently of null quadrature domains, has been studied over more than 90 years. In this paper we give a conclusive answer to this problem by proving the following long-standing conjecture: The coincidence set of a global solution to the obstacle problem is either a half-space, an ellipsoid, a paraboloid, or a cylinder with an ellipsoid or a paraboloid as base.

Isoperimetry and stability properties of balls with respect to nonlocal energies

We obtain a sharp quantitative isoperimetric inequality for nonlocal $s$-perimeters, uniform with respect to $s$ bounded away from $0$. This allows us to address local and global minimality properties of balls with respect to the volume-constrained minimization of a free energy consisting of a nonlocal $s$-perimeter plus a non-local repulsive interaction term. In the particular case $s =1$ the $s$-perimeter coincides with the classical perimeter, and our results improve the ones of Knüpfer and Muratov concerning minimality of balls of small volume in isoperimetric problems with a competition between perimeter and a nonlocal potential term. More precisely, their result is extended to its maximal range of validity concerning the type of nonlocal potentials considered, and is also generalized to the case where local perimeters are replaced by their nonlocal counterparts.

A scale-dependent notion of effective dimension

We introduce a notion of "effective dimension" of a statistical model based on the number of cubes of size $1/\sqrt{n}$ needed to cover the model space when endowed with the Fisher Information Matrix as metric, $n$ being the number of observations. The number of observations fixes a natural scale or resolution. The effective dimension is then measured via the spectrum of the Fisher Information Matrix regularized using this natural scale.

Generic regularity of free boundaries for the obstacle problem

The goal of this paper is to establish generic regularity of free boundaries for the obstacle problem in $\mathbb R^n$. By classical results of Caffarelli, the free boundary is $C^\infty$ outside a set of singular points. Explicit examples show that the singular set could be in general $(n-1)$-dimensional ---that is, as large as the regular set. Our main result establishes that, generically, the singular set has zero $\mathcal H^{n-4}$ measure (in particular, it has codimension 3 inside the free boundary). In particular, for $n\leq4$, the free boundary is generically a $C^\infty$ manifold. This solves a conjecture of Schaeffer (dating back to 1974) on the generic regularity of free boundaries in dimensions $n\leq4$.

Lipschitz Regularity in Vectorial Linear Transmission Problems

We consider vector-valued solutions to a linear transmission problem, and we prove that Lipschitz-regularity on one phase is transmitted to the next phase. More exactly, given a solution $u:B_1\subset \mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}^m$ to the elliptic system \begin{equation*} \mbox{div} ((A + (B-A)χ_D )\nabla u) = 0 \quad \text{in }B_1, \end{equation*} where $A$ and $B$ are Dini continuous, uniformly elliptic matrices, we prove that if $\nabla u \in L^{\infty} (D)$ then $u$ is Lipschitz in $B_{1/2}$. A similar result is also derived for the parabolic counterpart of this problem.

Optimal regularity and structure of the free boundary for minimizers in cohesive zone models

We study optimal regularity and free boundary for minimizers of an energy functional arising in cohesive zone models for fracture mechanics. Under smoothness assumptions on the boundary conditions and on the fracture energy density, we show that minimizers are $C^{1, 1/2}$, and that near non-degenerate points the fracture set is $C^{1, α}$, for some $α\in (0, 1)$.

Stable solutions to semilinear elliptic equations are smooth up to dimension 9

In this paper we prove the following long-standing conjecture: stable solutions to semilinear elliptic equations are bounded (and thus smooth) in dimension $n \leq 9$. This result, that was only known to be true for $n\leq4$, is optimal: $\log(1/|x|^2)$ is a $W^{1,2}$ singular stable solution for $n\geq10$. The proof of this conjecture is a consequence of a new universal estimate: we prove that, in dimension $n \leq 9$, stable solutions are bounded in terms only of their $L^1$ norm, independently of the nonlinearity. In addition, in every dimension we establish a higher integrability result for the gradient and optimal integrability results for the solution in Morrey spaces. As one can see by a series of classical examples, all our results are sharp. Furthermore, as a corollary we obtain that extremal solutions of Gelfand problems are $W^{1,2}$ in every dimension and they are smooth in dimension $n \leq 9$. This answers to two famous open problems posed by Brezis and Brezis-Vázquez.

On the sharp stability of critical points of the Sobolev inequality

Given $n\geq 3$, consider the critical elliptic equation $Δu + u^{2^*-1}=0$ in $\mathbb R^n$ with $u > 0$. This equation corresponds to the Euler-Lagrange equation induced by the Sobolev embedding $H^1(\mathbb R^n)\hookrightarrow L^{2^*}(\mathbb R^n)$, and it is well-known that the solutions are uniquely characterized and are given by the so-called ``Talenti bubbles''. In addition, thanks to a fundamental result by Struwe, this statement is ``stable up to bubbling'': if $u:\mathbb R^n\to(0,\infty)$ almost solves $Δu + u^{2^*-1}=0$ then $u$ is (nonquantitatively) close in the $H^1(\mathbb R^n)$-norm to a sum of weakly-interacting Talenti bubbles. More precisely, if $δ(u)$ denotes the $H^1(\mathbb R^n)$-distance of $u$ from the manifold of sums of Talenti bubbles, Struwe proved that $δ(u)\to 0$ as $\lVertΔu + u^{2^*-1}\rVert_{H^{-1}}\to 0$. In this paper we investigate the validity of a sharp quantitative version of the stability for critical points: more precisely, we ask whether under a bound on the energy $\lVert\nabla u\rVert_{L^2}$ (that controls the number of bubbles) it holds $δ(u) \lesssim \lVertΔu + u^{2^*-1}\rVert_{H^{-1}}$. A recent paper by the first author together with Ciraolo and Maggi shows that the above result is true if $u$ is close to only one bubble. Here we prove, to our surprise, that whenever there are at least two bubbles then the estimate above is true for $3\le n\le 5$ while it is false for $n\ge 6$. To our knowledge, this is the first situation where quantitative stability estimates depend so strikingly on the dimension of the space, changing completely behavior for some particular value of the dimension $n$.

A quantitative analysis of metrics on $\mathbf{R}^n$ with almost constant positive scalar curvature, with applications to fast diffusion flows

We prove a quantitative structure theorem for metrics on $\mathbf{R}^n$ that are conformal to the flat metric, have almost constant positive scalar curvature, and cannot concentrate more than one bubble. As an application of our result, we show a quantitative rate of convergence in relative entropy for a fast diffusion equation in $\mathbf{R}^n$ related to the Yamabe flow.

Free boundary regularity in the parabolic fractional obstacle problem

The parabolic obstacle problem for the fractional Laplacian naturally arises in American option models when the assets prices are driven by pure jump Lévy processes. In this paper we study the regularity of the free boundary. Our main result establishes that, when $s>\frac12$, the free boundary is a $C^{1,α}$ graph in $x$ and $t$ near any regular free boundary point $(x_0,t_0)\in \partial\{u>φ\}$. Furthermore, we also prove that solutions $u$ are $C^{1+s}$ in $x$ and $t$ near such points, with a precise expansion of the form \[u(x,t)-φ(x)=c_0\bigl((x-x_0)\cdot e+a(t-t_0)\bigr)_+^{1+s}+o\bigl(|x-x_0|^{1+s+α}+ |t-t_0|^{1+s+α}\bigr),\] with $c_0>0$, $e\in \mathbb{S}^{n-1}$, and $a>0$.

Infinite speed of propagation and regularity of solutions to the fractional porous medium equation in general domains

We study the positivity and regularity of solutions to the fractional porous medium equations $u_t+(-Δ)^su^m=0$ in $(0,\infty)\timesΩ$, for $m>1$ and $s\in (0,1)$ and with Dirichlet boundary data $u=0$ in $(0,\infty)\times({\mathbb R}^N\setminusΩ)$, and nonnegative initial condition $u(0,\cdot)=u_0\geq0$. Our first result is a quantitative lower bound for solutions which holds for all positive times $t>0$. As a consequence, we find a global Harnack principle stating that for any $t>0$ solutions are comparable to $d^{s/m}$, where $d$ is the distance to $\partialΩ$. This is in sharp contrast with the local case $s=1$, in which the equation has finite speed of propagation. After this, we study the regularity of solutions. We prove that solutions are classical in the interior ($C^\infty$ in $x$ and $C^{1,α}$ in $t$) and establish a sharp $C^{s/m}_x$ regularity estimate up to the boundary. Our methods are quite general, and can be applied to a wider class of nonlocal parabolic equations of the form $u_t-\mathcal L F(u)=0$ in $Ω$, both in bounded or unbounded domains.

Nonlinear Bounds in Hölder Spaces for the Monge-Ampère Equation

We demonstrate that $C^{2,α}$ estimates for the Monge-Ampère equation depend in a highly nonlinear way both on the $C^α$ norm of the right-hand side and $1/α$. First, we show that if a solution is strictly convex, then the $C^{2,α}$ norm of the solution depends polynomially on the $C^α$ norm of the right-hand side. Second, we show that the $C^{2,α}$ norm of the solution is controlled by $\exp((C/α)\log(1/α))$ as $α\to 0$. Finally, we construct a family of solutions in two dimensions to show the sharpness of our results.

Partial $W^{2,p}$ regularity for optimal transport maps

We prove that, in the optimal transportation problem with general costs and positive continuous densities, the potential function is always of class $W^{2,p}_{loc}$ for any $p \geq 1$ outside of a closed singular set of measure zero. We also establish global $W^{2,p}$ estimates when the cost is a small perturbation of the quadratic cost. The latter result is new even when the cost is exactly the quadratic cost.

The sharp quantitative Euclidean concentration inequality

The Euclidean concentration inequality states that, among sets with fixed volume, balls have $r$-neighborhoods of minimal volume for every $r>0$. On an arbitrary set, the deviation of this volume growth from that of a ball is shown to control the square of the volume of the symmetric difference between the set and a ball. This sharp result is strictly related to the physically significant problem of understanding near maximizers in the Riesz rearrangement inequality with a strictly decreasing radially decreasing kernel. Moreover, it implies as a particular case the sharp quantitative Euclidean isoperimetric inequality from \cite{fuscomaggipratelli}.

Universality in several-matrix models via approximate transport maps

We construct approximate transport maps for perturbative several-matrix models. As a consequence, we deduce that local statistics have the same asymptotic as in the case of independent GUE or GOE matrices, i.e., they are given by the Sine-kernel in the bulk and the Tracy-Widom distribution at the edge. Moreover, we prove universality for the local statistics of eigenvalues of self-adjoint polynomials in several independent GUE or GOE matrices which are close to the identity.

Global well-posedness of the spatially homogeneous Kolmogorov-Vicsek model as a gradient flow

We consider the so-called spatially homogenous Kolmogorov-Vicsek model, a non-linear Fokker-Planck equation of self-driven stochastic particles with orientation interaction under the space-homogeneity. We prove the global existence and uniqueness of weak solutions to the equation. We also show that weak solutions exponentially converge to a steady state, which has the form of the Fisher-von Mises distribution.

Lipschitz Changes of Variables between Perturbations of Log-concave Measures

Extending a result of Caffarelli, we provide global Lipschitz changes of variables between compactly supported perturbations of log-concave measures. The result is based on a combination of ideas from optimal transportation theory and a new Pogorelov-type estimate. In the case of radially symmetric measures, Lipschitz changes of variables are obtained for a much broader class of perturbations.

On the density function on moduli spaces of toric 4-manifolds

The optimal density function assigns to each symplectic toric manifold $M$ a number $0 < d \leq 1$ obtained by considering the ratio between the maximum volume of $M$ which can be filled by symplectically embedded disjoint balls and the total symplectic volume of $M$. In the toric version of this problem, $M$ is toric and the balls need to be embedded respecting the toric action on $M$. The goal of this note is first to give a brief survey of the notion of toric symplectic manifold and the recent constructions of moduli space structure on them, and recall how to define a natural density function on this moduli space. Then we review previous works which explain how the study of the density function can be reduced to a problem in convex geometry, and use this correspondence to to give a simple description of the regions of continuity of the maximal density function when the dimension is $4$.

Rigidity and sharp stability estimates for hypersurfaces with constant and almost-constant nonlocal mean curvature

We prove that the boundary of a (not necessarily connected) bounded smooth set with constant nonlocal mean curvature is a sphere. More generally, and in contrast with what happens in the classical case, we show that the Lipschitz constant of the nonlocal mean curvature of such a boundary controls its $C^2$-distance from a single sphere. The corresponding stability inequality is obtained with a sharp decay rate.

Transport maps for Beta-matrix models and Universality

We construct approximate transport maps for non-critical Beta-matrix models, that is, maps so that the push forward of a non-critical Beta-matrix model with a given potential is a non-critical Beta-matrix model with another potential, up to a small error in the total variation distance. As a consequence, we deduce that local statistics have the same asymptotic behavior for both models.

Boundary $\varepsilon$-regularity in optimal transportation

We develop an $\e$-regularity theory at the boundary for a general class of Monge-Ampère type equations arising in optimal transportation. As a corollary we deduce that optimal transport maps between Hölder densities supported on $C^2$ uniformly convex domains are $C^{1,α}$ up to the boundary, provided that the cost function is a sufficient small perturbation of the quadratic cost $-x\cdot y$.

Existence and uniqueness of maximal regular flows for non-smooth vector fields

In this paper we provide a complete analogy between the Cauchy-Lipschitz and the DiPerna-Lions theories for ODE's, by developing a local version of the DiPerna-Lions theory. More precisely, we prove existence and uniqueness of a maximal regular flow for the DiPerna-Lions theory using only local regularity and summability assumptions on the vector field, in analogy with the classical theory, which uses only local regularity assumptions. We also study the behaviour of the ODE trajectories before the maximal existence time. Unlike the Cauchy-Lipschitz theory, this behaviour crucially depends on the nature of the bounds imposed on the spatial divergence of the vector field. In particular, a global assumption on the divergence is needed to obtain a proper blow-up of the trajectories.

Quantitative stability for sumsets in $R^n$

Given a measurable set $A\subset \R^n$ of positive measure, it is not difficult to show that $|A+A|=|2A|$ if and only if $A$ is equal to its convex hull minus a set of measure zero. We investigate the stability of this statement: If $(|A+A|-|2A|)/|A|$ is small, is $A$ close to its convex hull? Our main result is an explicit control, in arbitrary dimension, on the measure of the difference between $A$ and its convex hull in terms of $(|A+A|-|2A|)/|A|$.

A general class of free boundary problems for fully nonlinear parabolic equations

In this paper we consider the fully nonlinear parabolic free boundary problem $$ \left\{\begin{array}{ll} F(D^2u) -\partial_t u=1 & \text{a.e. in}Q_1 \cap Ω\\ |D^2 u| + |\partial_t u| \leq K & \text{a.e. in}Q_1\setminusΩ, \end{array} \right. $$ where $K>0$ is a positive constant, and $Ω$ is an (unknown) open set. Our main result is the optimal regularity for solutions to this problem: namely, we prove that $W_x^{2,n} \cap W_t^{1,n} $ solutions are locally $C_x^{1,1}\cap C_t^{0,1} $ inside $Q_1$. A key starting point for this result is a new BMO-type estimate which extends to the parabolic setting the main result in \cite{CH}. Once optimal regularity for $u$ is obtained, we also show regularity for the free boundary $\partialΩ\cap Q_1$ under the extra condition that $Ω\supset \{u \neq 0 \}$, and a uniform thickness assumption on the coincidence set $\{u = 0 \}$,

Strongly nonlocal dislocation dynamics in crystals

We consider the equation $$v_t=L_s v-W'(v)+σ_ε(t,x) \quad {\mbox{ in }} (0,+\infty)\times\R,$$ where $L_s$ is an integro-differential operator of order $2s$, with $s\in(0,1)$, $W$ is a periodic potential, and $σ_ε$ is a small external stress. The solution $v$ represents the atomic dislocation in the Peierls--Nabarro model for crystals, and we specifically consider the case $s\in(0,1/2)$, which takes into account a strongly nonlocal elastic term. We study the evolution of such dislocation function for macroscopic space and time scales, namely we introduce the function $$ v_ε(t,x):=v\left(\frac{t}{ε^{1+2s}},\frac{x}ε\right). $$ We show that, for small $ε$, the function $v_ε$ approaches the sum of step functions. From the physical point of view, this shows that the dislocations have the tendency to concentrate at single points of the crystal, where the size of the slip coincides with the natural periodicity of the medium. We also show that the motion of these dislocation points is governed by an interior repulsive potential that is superposed to an elastic reaction to the external stress.

A sharp stability result for the relative isoperimetric inequality inside convex cones

The relative isoperimetric inequality inside an open, convex cone $\mathcal C$ states that, at fixed volume, $B_r \cap \mathcal C$ minimizes the perimeter inside $\mathcal C$. Starting from the observation that this result can be recovered as a corollary of the anisotropic isoperimetric inequality, we exploit a variant of Gromov's proof of the classical isoperimetric inequality to prove a sharp stability result for the relative isoperimetric inequality inside $\mathcal C$. Our proof follows the line of reasoning in \cite{Fi}, though several new ideas are needed in order to deal with the lack of translation invariance in our problem.

Existence of Eulerian solutions to the semigeostrophic equations in physical space: the 2-dimensional periodic case

In this paper we use the new regularity and stability estimates for Alexandrov solutions to Monge-Ampere equations estabilished by G.De Philippis and A.Figalli to provide a global in time existence of distributional solutions to a semigeostrophic equation on the 2-dimensional torus, under very mild assumptions on the initial data. Sobolev regularity for Monge-Ampère type equations

In this note we prove that, if the cost function satisfies some necessary structural conditions and the densities are bounded away from zero and infinity, then strictly $c$-convex potentials arising in optimal transportation belong to $W^{2,1+κ}_{\rm loc}$ for some $κ>0$. This generalizes some recents results concerning the regularity of strictly convex Alexandrov solutions of the Monge-Ampère equation with right hand side bounded away from zero and infinity.

Hölder continuity and injectivity of optimal maps

Consider transportation of one distribution of mass onto another, chosen to optimize the total expected cost, where cost per unit mass transported from x to y is given by a smooth function c(x,y). If the source density f^+(x) is bounded away from zero and infinity in an open region U' \subset R^n, and the target density f^-(y) is bounded away from zero and infinity on its support \cl V \subset R^n, which is strongly c-convex with respect to U', and the transportation cost c satisfies the A3w condition of Trudinger and Wang \cite{TrudingerWang07p}, we deduce local Hölder continuity and injectivity of the optimal map inside U' (so that the associated potential u belongs to C^{1,α}_{loc}(\U')). Here the exponent α>0 depends only on the dimension and the bounds on the densities, but not on c. Our result provides a crucial step in the low/interior regularity setting: in a sequel \cite{FigalliKimMcCann09p}, we use it to establish regularity of optimal maps with respect to the Riemannian distance squared on arbitrary products of spheres. Three key tools are introduced in the present paper. Namely, we first find a transformation that under A3w makes c-convex functions level-set convex (as was also obtained independently from us by Liu \cite{Liu09}). We then derive new Alexandrov type estimates for the level-set convex c-convex functions, and a topological lemma showing optimal maps do not mix interior with boundary. This topological lemma, which does not require A3w, is needed by Figalli and Loeper \cite{FigalliLoeper08p} to conclude continuity of optimal maps in two dimensions. In higher dimensions, if the densities f^\pm are Hölder continuous, our result permits continuous differentiability of the map inside U' (in fact, C^{2,α}_{loc} regularity of the associated potential) to be deduced from the work of Liu, Trudinger and Wang \cite{LiuTrudingerWang09p}.

Non-Local Tug-of-War and the Infinity Fractional Laplacian

Motivated by the "tug-of-war" game studied in [12], we consider a "non-local" version of the game which goes as follows: at every step two players pick respectively a direction and then, instead of flipping a coin in order to decide which direction to choose and then moving of a fixed amount $ε>0$ (as is done in the classical case), it is a $s$-stable Levy process which chooses at the same time both the direction and the distance to travel. Starting from this game, we heuristically we derive a deterministic non-local integro-differential equation that we call "infinity fractional Laplacian". We study existence, uniqueness, and regularity, both for the Dirichlet problem and for a double obstacle problem, both problems having a natural interpretation as "tug-of-war" games.

Regularity of optimal transport maps on multiple products of spheres

This article addresses regularity of optimal transport maps for cost="squared distance" on Riemannian manifolds that are products of arbitrarily many round spheres with arbitrary sizes and dimensions. Such manifolds are known to be non-negatively cross-curved [KM2]. Under boundedness and non-vanishing assumptions on the transfered source and target densities we show that optimal maps stay away from the cut-locus (where the cost exhibits singularity), and obtain injectivity and continuity of optimal maps. This together with the result of Liu, Trudinger and Wang [LTW] also implies higher regularity (C^{1,α}/C^\infty) of optimal maps for more smooth (C^α/C^\infty)) densities. These are the first global regularity results which we are aware of concerning optimal maps on non-flat Riemannian manifolds which possess some vanishing sectional curvatures. Moreover, such product manifolds have potential relevance in statistics (see [S]) and in statistical mechanics (where the state of a system consisting of many spins is classically modeled by a point in the phase space obtained by taking many products of spheres). For the proof we apply and extend the method developed in [FKM1], where we showed injectivity and continuity of optimal maps on domains in R^n for smooth non-negatively cross-curved cost. The major obstacle in the present paper is to deal with the non-trivial cut-locus and the presence of flat directions.

Semiclassical limit for mixed states with singular and rough potentials

We consider the semiclassical limit for the Heisenberg-von Neumann equation with a potential which consists of the sum of a repulsive Coulomb potential, plus a Lipschitz potential whose gradient belongs to $BV$; this assumption on the potential guarantees the well posedness of the Liouville equation in the space of bounded integrable solutions. We find sufficient conditions on the initial data to ensure that the quantum dynamics converges to the classical one. More precisely, we consider the Husimi functions of the solution of the Heisenberg-von Neumann equation, and under suitable assumptions on the initial data we prove that they converge, as $\e \to 0$, to the unique bounded solution of the Liouville equation (locally uniformly in time).

Semiclassical limit of quantum dynamics with rough potentials and well posedness of transport equations with measure initial data

In this paper we study the semiclassical limit of the Schrödinger equation. Under mild regularity assumptions on the potential $U$ which include Born-Oppenheimer potential energy surfaces in molecular dynamics, we establish asymptotic validity of classical dynamics globally in space and time for "almost all" initial data, with respect to an appropriate reference measure on the space of initial data. In order to achieve this goal we prove existence, uniqueness and stability results for the flow in the space of measures induced by the continuity equation.
