Optimal $C^\infty$-approximation of functions with exponentially or sub-exponentially integrable derivative

We discuss Meyers-Serrin's type results for smooth approximations of functions $b=b(t,x):\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{R}^n\to\mathbb{R}^m$, with convergence of an energy of the form \[ \int_{\mathbb{R}}\int_{\mathbb{R}^n} w(t,x) φ\left(|Db(t,x)|\right)\mathrm{d} x \mathrm{d} t\,, \] where $w>0$ is a suitable weight function, and $φ:[0,\infty)\to [0,\infty)$ is a convex function with $φ(0)=0$ having exponential or sub-exponential growth.

$Γ$-convergence for a class of action functionals induced by gradients of convex functions

Given a real function $f$, the rate function for the large deviations of the diffusion process of drift $\nabla f$ given by the Freidlin-Wentzell theorem coincides with the time integral of the energy dissipation for the gradient flow associated with $f$. This paper is concerned with the stability in the hilbertian framework of this common action functional when $f$ varies. More precisely, we show that if $(f_h)_h$ is uniformly $λ$-convex for some $λ\in \mathbb{R}$ and converges towards $f$ in the sense of Mosco convergence, then the related functionals $Γ$-converge in the strong topology of curves.

Embedding of $RCD^*(K,N)$ spaces in $L^2$ via eigenfunctions

In this paper we study the family of embeddings $Φ_t$ of a compact $RCD^*(K,N)$ space $(X,d,m)$ into $L^2(X,m)$ via eigenmaps. Extending part of the classical results by Bérard, Bérard-Besson-Gallot, known for closed Riemannian manifolds, we prove convergence as $t\downarrow 0$ of the rescaled pull-back metrics $Φ_t^*g_{L^2}$ in $L^2(X,m)$ induced by $Φ_t$. Moreover we discuss the behavior of $Φ_t^*g_{L^2}$ with respect to measured Gromov-Hausdorff convergence and $t$. Applications include the quantitative $L^p$-convergence in the noncollapsed setting for all $p<\infty$, a result new even for closed Riemannian manifolds and Alexandrov spaces.

Nonlinear diffusion equations and curvature conditions in metric measure spaces

Aim of this paper is to provide new characterizations of the curvature dimension condition in the context of metric measure spaces (X,d,m). On the geometric side, our new approach takes into account suitable weighted action functionals which provide the natural modulus of K-convexity when one investigates the convexity properties of N-dimensional entropies. On the side of diffusion semigroups and evolution variational inequalities, our new approach uses the nonlinear diffusion semigroup induced by the N-dimensional entropy, in place of the heat flow. Under suitable assumptions (most notably the quadraticity of Cheeger's energy relative to the metric measure structure) both approaches are shown to be equivalent to the strong CD*(K,N) condition of Bacher-Sturm.

A PDE approach to a 2-dimensional matching problem

We prove asymptotic results for 2-dimensional random matching problems. In particular, we obtain the leading term in the asymptotic expansion of the expected quadratic transportation cost for empirical measures of two samples of independent uniform random variables in the square. Our technique is based on a rigorous formulation of the challenging PDE ansatz by S.\ Caracciolo et al.\ (Phys. Rev. E, {\bf 90} 012118, 2014) that "linearise" the Monge-Ampère equation.

Lecture notes on the DiPerna-Lions theory in abstract measure spaces

These notes closely correspond to a series of lectures given by the first author in Toulouse, on the recent extension of the theory of ODE well-posedness to abstract spaces, jointly obtained by the two authors. In the last part, we describe some further developments with respect to the theory of (possibly degenerate) diffusion processes, in a similar setting, contained in the second author's PhD thesis.

Linear extension operators between spaces of Lipschitz maps and optimal transport

Motivated by the notion of K-gentle partition of unity introduced in [12] and the notion of K-Lipschitz retract studied in [17], we study a weaker notion related to the Kantorovich-Rubinstein transport distance, that we call K-random projection. We show that K-random projections can still be used to provide linear extension operators for Lipschitz maps. We also prove that the existence of these random projections is necessary and sufficient for the existence of weak* continuous operators. Finally we use this notion to characterize the metric spaces (X, d) such that the free space F(X) has the bounded approximation propriety.

New stability results for sequences of metric measure spaces with uniform Ricci bounds from below

The aim of this paper is to provide new stability results for sequences of metric measure spaces $(X_i,d_i,m_i)$ convergent in the measured Gromov-Hausdorff sense. By adopting the so-called extrinsic approach of embedding all metric spaces into a common one $(X,d)$, we extend the results of Gigli-Mondino-Savaré by providing Mosco convergence of Cheeger's energies and compactness theorems in the whole range of Sobolev spaces $H^{1,p}$, including the space $BV$, and even with a variable exponent $p_i\in [1,\infty]$. In addition, building on the results of Ambrosio-Stra-Trevisan, we provide local convergence results for gradient derivations. We use these tools to improve the spectral stability results, previously known for $p>1$ and for Ricci limit spaces, getting continuity of Cheeger's constant. In the dimensional case $N<\infty$, we improve some rigidity and almost rigidity results by Ketterer and Cavaletti-Mondino. On the basis of the second-order calculus by Gigli, in the class of $RCD(K,\infty)$ spaces we provide stability results for Hessians and $W^{2,2}$ functions and we treat the stability of the Bakry-Émery condition $BE(K,N)$ and of ${\bf Ric}\geq KI$, with $K$ and $N$ not necessarily constant.

Rectifiability of sets of finite perimeter in Carnot groups: existence of a tangent hyperplane

We consider sets of locally finite perimeter in Carnot groups. We show that if E is a set of locally finite perimeter in a Carnot group G, then for almost every x in G with respect to the perimeter measure of E, some tangent of E at x is a vertical halfspace. This is a partial extension of a theorem of Franchi-Serapioni-Serra Cassano in step 2 Carnot groups: they have shown that, for almost every x, E has a unique tangent at x, and this tangent is a vertical halfspace.

Weak and strong convergence of derivations and stability of flows with respect to MGH convergence

This paper is devoted to the study of weak and strong convergence of derivations, and of the flows associated to them, when dealing with a sequence of metric measure structures (X,d,m_n), m_n weakly convergent to m. In particular, under curvature assumptions, either only on the limit metric structure (X,d,m) or on the whole sequence of metric measure spaces, we provide several stability results.

Bakry-Émery curvature-dimension condition and Riemannian Ricci curvature bounds

The aim of the present paper is to bridge the gap between the Bakry-Émery and the Lott-Sturm-Villani approaches to provide synthetic and abstract notions of lower Ricci curvature bounds. We start from a strongly local Dirichlet form ${\mathcal{E}}$ admitting a Carré du champ $Γ$ in a Polish measure space $(X,\mathfrak{m})$ and a canonical distance ${\mathsf{d}}_{\mathcal{E}}$ that induces the original topology of $X$. We first characterize the distinguished class of Riemannian Energy measure spaces, where ${\mathcal{E}}$ coincides with the Cheeger energy induced by ${\mathsf{d}}_{\mathcal{E}}$ and where every function $f$ with $Γ(f)\le1$ admits a continuous representative. In such a class, we show that if ${\mathcal{E}}$ satisfies a suitable weak form of the Bakry-Émery curvature dimension condition $\mathrm {BE}(K,\infty)$ then the metric measure space $(X,{\mathsf{d}},\mathfrak{m})$ satisfies the Riemannian Ricci curvature bound $\mathrm {RCD}(K,\infty)$ according to [Duke Math. J. 163 (2014) 1405-1490], thus showing the equivalence of the two notions. Two applications are then proved: the tensorization property for Riemannian Energy spaces satisfying the Bakry-Émery $\mathrm {BE}(K,N)$ condition (and thus the corresponding one for $\mathrm {RCD}(K,\infty)$ spaces without assuming nonbranching) and the stability of $\mathrm {BE}(K,N)$ with respect to Sturm-Gromov-Hausdorff convergence.

DC Calculus

In this paper, we extend the DC Calculus introduced by Perelman on finite dimensional Alexandrov spaces with curvature bounded below. Among other things, our results allow us to define the Hessian and the Laplacian of DC functions (including distance functions as a particular instance) as a measure-valued tensor and a Radon measure respectively. We show that these objects share various properties with their analogues on smooth Riemannian manifolds.

Optimal transport, Cheeger energies and contractivity of dynamic transport distances in extended spaces

We introduce the setting of extended metric-topological measure spaces as a general "Wiener-like" framework for optimal transport problems and nonsmooth metric analysis in infinite dimension. After a brief review of optimal transport tools for general Radon measures, we discuss the notions of the Cheeger energy, of the Radon measures concentrated on absolutely continuous curves, and of the induced "dynamic transport distances." We study their main properties and their links with the theory of Dirichlet forms and the Bakry-Émery curvature condition, in particular concerning the contractivity properties and the EVI formulation of the induced Heat semigroup.

Existence and uniqueness of maximal regular flows for non-smooth vector fields

In this paper we provide a complete analogy between the Cauchy-Lipschitz and the DiPerna-Lions theories for ODE's, by developing a local version of the DiPerna-Lions theory. More precisely, we prove existence and uniqueness of a maximal regular flow for the DiPerna-Lions theory using only local regularity and summability assumptions on the vector field, in analogy with the classical theory, which uses only local regularity assumptions. We also study the behaviour of the ODE trajectories before the maximal existence time. Unlike the Cauchy-Lipschitz theory, this behaviour crucially depends on the nature of the bounds imposed on the spatial divergence of the vector field. In particular, a global assumption on the divergence is needed to obtain a proper blow-up of the trajectories.

On the duality between p-Modulus and probability measures

Motivated by recent developments on calculus in metric measure spaces $(X,\mathsf d,\mathfrak m)$, we prove a general duality principle between Fuglede's notion of $p$-modulus for families of finite Borel measures in $(X,\mathsf d)$ and probability measures with barycenter in $L^q(X,\mathfrak m)$, with $q$ dual exponent of $p\in (1,\infty)$. We apply this general duality principle to study null sets for families of parametric and non-parametric curves in $X$. In the final part of the paper we provide a new proof, independent of optimal transportation, of the equivalence of notions of weak upper gradient based on $p$-Modulus (Koskela-MacManus '98, Shanmugalingam '00) and suitable probability measures in the space of curves (Ambrosio-Gigli-Savare '11)

Tensorization of Cheeger energies, the space $H^{1,1}$ and the area formula for graphs

First we study in detail the tensorization properties of weak gradients in metric measure spaces $(X,d,m)$. Then, we compare potentially different notions of Sobolev space $H^{1,1}(X,d,m)$ and of weak gradient with exponent 1. Eventually we apply these results to compare the area functional $\int\sqrt{1+|\nabla f|_w^2}\,dm$ with the perimeter of the subgraph of $f$, in the same spirit as the classical theory.

Well posedness of Lagrangian flows and continuity equations in metric measure spaces

We establish, in a rather general setting, an analogue of DiPerna-Lions theory on well-posedness of flows of ODE's associated to Sobolev vector fields. Key results are a well-posedness result for the continuity equation associated to suitably defined Sobolev vector fields, via a commutator estimate, and an abstract superposition principle in (possibly extended) metric measure spaces, via an embedding into $\mathbb{R}^\infty$. When specialized to the setting of Euclidean or infinite dimensional (e.g. Gaussian) spaces, large parts of previously known results are recovered at once. Moreover, the class of ${\sf RCD}(K,\infty)$ metric measure spaces object of extensive recent research fits into our framework. Therefore we provide, for the first time, well-posedness results for ODE's under low regularity assumptions on the velocity and in a nonsmooth context.

BV functions and sets of finite perimeter in sub-Riemannian manifolds

We give a notion of BV function on an oriented manifold where a volume form and a family of lower semicontinuous quadratic forms $G_p: T_pM \to [0,\infty]$ are given. When we consider sub-Riemannian manifolds, our definition coincide with the one given in the more general context of metric measure spaces which are doubling and support a Poincaré inequality. We then focus on finite perimeter sets, i.e., sets whose characteristic function is BV, in sub-Riemannian manifolds. Under an assumption on the nilpotent approximation, we prove a blowup theorem, generalizing the one obtained for step-2 Carnot groups in [24].

On the Bakry-Émery condition, the gradient estimates and the Local-to-Global property of RCD*(K,N) metric measure spaces

We prove higher summability and regularity of Γ(f) for functions f in spaces satisfying the Bakry-Émery condition BE(K,\infty). As a byproduct, we obtain various equivalent weak formulations of BE(K,N) and we prove the Local-to-Global property of the RCD*(K,N) condition in locally compact metric measure spaces (X,d,m), without assuming a priori the non-branching condition on the metric space.

Calculus and heat flow in metric measure spaces and applications to spaces with Ricci bounds from below

This paper is devoted to a deeper understanding of the heat flow and to the refinement of calculus tools on metric measure spaces (X,d,m). Our main results are: - A general study of the relations between the Hopf-Lax semigroup and Hamilton-Jacobi equation in metric spaces (X,d). - The equivalence of the heat flow in L^2(X,m) generated by a suitable Dirichlet energy and the Wasserstein gradient flow of the relative entropy functional in the space of probability measures P(X). - The proof of density in energy of Lipschitz functions in the Sobolev space W^{1,2}(X,d,m). - A fine and very general analysis of the differentiability properties of a large class of Kantorovich potentials, in connection with the optimal transport problem. Our results apply in particular to spaces satisfying Ricci curvature bounds in the sense of Lott & Villani [30] and Sturm [39,40], and require neither the doubling property nor the validity of the local Poincaré inequality.

Compactness of special functions of bounded higher variation

Given an open set Ω\subset\R^m and n>1, we introduce the new spaces GB_nV(Ω) of Generalized functions of bounded higher variation and GSB_nV(Ω) of Generalized special functions of bounded higher variation that generalize, respectively, the space B_nV introduced by Jerrard and Soner and the corresponding SB_nV space studied by De Lellis. In this class of spaces, which allow the description of singularities of codimension n, the distributional jacobian Ju need not have finite mass: roughly speaking, finiteness of mass is not required for the (m-n)-dimensional part of Ju, but only finiteness of size. In the space GSB_nV we are able to provide compactness of sublevel sets and lower semicontinuity of Mumford-Shah type functionals, in the same spirit of the codimension 1 theory.

Existence of Eulerian solutions to the semigeostrophic equations in physical space: the 2-dimensional periodic case

In this paper we use the new regularity and stability estimates for Alexandrov solutions to Monge-Ampere equations estabilished by G.De Philippis and A.Figalli to provide a global in time existence of distributional solutions to a semigeostrophic equation on the 2-dimensional torus, under very mild assumptions on the initial data. A link with Lagrangian solutions is also discussed.

Heat flow and calculus on metric measure spaces with Ricci curvature bounded below - the compact case

We provide a quick overview of various calculus tools and of the main results concerning the heat flow on compact metric measure spaces, with applications to spaces with lower Ricci curvature bounds. Topics include the Hopf-Lax semigroup and the Hamilton-Jacobi equation in metric spaces, a new approach to differentiation and to the theory of Sobolev spaces over metric measure spaces, the equivalence of the L^2-gradient flow of a suitably defined "Dirichlet energy" and the Wasserstein gradient flow of the relative entropy functional, a metric version of Brenier's Theorem, and a new (stronger) definition of Ricci curvature bound from below for metric measure spaces. This new notion is stable w.r.t. measured Gromov-Hausdorff convergence and it is strictly connected with the linearity of the heat flow.

Metric measure spaces with Riemannian Ricci curvature bounded from below

In this paper we introduce a synthetic notion of Riemannian Ricci bounds from below for metric measure spaces (X,d,m) which is stable under measured Gromov-Hausdorff convergence and rules out Finsler geometries. It can be given in terms of an enforcement of the Lott, Sturm and Villani geodesic convexity condition for the entropy coupled with the linearity of the heat flow. Besides stability, it enjoys the same tensorization, global-to-local and local-to-global properties. In these spaces, that we call RCD(K,\infty) spaces, we prove that the heat flow (which can be equivalently characterized either as the flow associated to the Dirichlet form, or as the Wasserstein gradient flow of the entropy) satisfies Wasserstein contraction estimates and several regularity properties, in particular Bakry-Emery estimates and the L^\infty-Lip Feller regularization. We also prove that the distance induced by the Dirichlet form coincides with d, that the local energy measure has density given by the square of Cheeger's relaxed slope and, as a consequence, that the underlying Brownian motion has continuous paths. All these results are obtained independently of Poincaré and doubling assumptions on the metric measure structure and therefore apply also to spaces which are not locally compact, as the infinite-dimensional ones

Sobolev spaces in metric measure spaces: reflexivity and lower semicontinuity of slope

In this paper we make a survey of some recent developments of the theory of Sobolev spaces $W^{1,q}(X,\sfd,\mm)$, $1<q<\infty$, in metric measure spaces $(X,\sfd,\mm)$. In the final part of the paper we provide a new proof of the reflexivity of the Sobolev space based on $Γ$-convergence; this result extends Cheeger's work because no Poincaré inequality is needed and the measure-theoretic doubling property is weakened to the metric doubling property of the support of $\mm$. We also discuss the lower semicontinuity of the slope of Lipschitz functions and some open problems.

Flat currents modulo p in metric spaces and filling radius inequalities

We adapt the theory of currents in metric spaces, as developed by the first-mentioned author in collaboration with B. Kirchheim, to currents with coefficients in Z_p. Building on S. Wenger's work in the orientable case, we obtain isoperimetric inequalities mod(p) in Banach spaces and we apply these inequalities to provide a proof of Gromov's filling radius inequality (and therefore also the systolic inequality) which applies to nonorientable manifolds, as well. With this goal in mind, we use the Ekeland principle to provide quasi-minimizers of the mass mod(p) in the homology class, and use the isoperimetric inequality to give lower bounds on the growth of their mass in balls.

On the approximation of mean densities of random closed sets

Many real phenomena may be modelled as random closed sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$, of different Hausdorff dimensions. In many real applications, such as fiber processes and $n$-facets of random tessellations of dimension $n\leq d$ in spaces of dimension $d\geq1$, several problems are related to the estimation of such mean densities. In order to confront such problems in the general setting of spatially inhomogeneous processes, we suggest and analyze an approximation of mean densities for sufficiently regular random closed sets. We show how some known results in literature follow as particular cases. A series of examples throughout the paper are provided to illustrate various relevant situations.

Semiclassical limit of quantum dynamics with rough potentials and well posedness of transport equations with measure initial data

In this paper we study the semiclassical limit of the Schrödinger equation. Under mild regularity assumptions on the potential $U$ which include Born-Oppenheimer potential energy surfaces in molecular dynamics, we establish asymptotic validity of classical dynamics globally in space and time for "almost all" initial data, with respect to an appropriate reference measure on the space of initial data. In order to achieve this goal we prove existence, uniqueness and stability results for the flow in the space of measures induced by the continuity equation.
