Closed geodesics on reversible Finsler 2-spheres

We extend two celebrated theorems on closed geodesics of Riemannian 2-spheres to the larger class of reversible Finsler 2-spheres: Lusternik-Schnirelmann's theorem asserting the existence of three simple closed geodesics, and Bangert-Franks-Hingston's theorem asserting the existence of infinitely many closed geodesics. In order to prove the first theorem, we employ the generalization of Grayson's curve shortening flow developed by Angenent-Oaks.

Non-degenerate minimal submanifolds as energy concentration sets: a variational approach

We prove that every non-degenerate minimal submanifold of codimension two can be obtained as the energy concentration set of a family of critical maps for the (rescaled) Ginzburg-Landau functional. The proof is purely variational, and follows the strategy laid out by Jerrard and Sternberg, extending a recent result for geodesics by Colinet-Jerrard-Sternberg. The same proof applies also to the $U(1)$-Yang-Mills-Higgs and to the Allen-Cahn-Hilliard energies.

The anisotropic Min-Max theory: Existence of anisotropic minimal and CMC surfaces

We prove the existence of nontrivial closed surfaces with constant anisotropic mean curvature with respect to elliptic integrands in closed smooth $3$-dimensional Riemannian manifolds. The constructed min-max surfaces are smooth with at most one singular point. The constant anisotropic mean curvature can be fixed to be any real number. In particular, we partially solve a conjecture of Allard [Invent. Math.,1983] in dimension $3$.

Fine properties of functions of bounded deformation -- an approach via linear PDEs

In this survey we collect some recent results obtained by the authors and collaborators concerning the fine structure of functions of bounded deformation (BD). These maps are $\mathrm{L}^1$-functions with the property that the symmetric part of their distributional derivative is representable as a bounded (matrix-valued) Radon measure. It has been known for a long time that for a (matrix-valued) Radon measure the property of being a symmetrized gradient can be characterized by an under-determined second-order PDE system, the Saint-Venant compatibility conditions. This observation gives rise to a new approach to the fine properties of BD-maps via the theory of PDEs for measures, which complements and partially replaces classical arguments. Starting from elementary observations, here we elucidate the ellipticity arguments underlying this recent progress and give an overview of the state of the art. We also present some open problems.

The behavior of harmonic functions at singular points of $\mathsf{RCD}$ spaces

In this note we investigate the behavior of harmonic functions at singular points of $\mathsf{RCD}(K,N)$ spaces. In particular we show that their gradient vanishes at all points where the tangent cone is isometric to a cone over a metric measure space with non-maximal diameter. The same analysis is performed for functions with a Laplacian in $L^{N+\varepsilon}$. As a consequence we show that on smooth manifolds there is no a priori estimate on the modulus of continuity of the gradient of harmonic functions which depends only on lower bounds of the sectional curvature. In the same way we show that there is no a priori Calderón-Zygmund theory for the Laplacian with bounds depending only on lower bounds of the sectional curvature.

On the structure of ${\mathscr A}$-free measures and applications

We establish a general structure theorem for the singular part of ${\mathscr A}$-free Radon measures, where ${\mathscr A}$ is a linear PDE operator. By applying the theorem to suitably chosen differential operators ${\mathscr A}$, we obtain a simple proof of Alberti's rank-one theorem and, for the first time, its extensions to functions of bounded deformation (BD). We also prove a structure theorem for the singular part of a finite family of normal currents. The latter result implies that the Rademacher theorem on the differentiability of Lipschitz functions can hold only for absolutely continuous measures and that every top-dimensional Ambrosio--Kirchheim metric current in $\mathbb R^d$ is a Federer-Fleming flat chain.

Rectifiability of varifolds with locally bounded first variation with respect to anisotropic surface energies

We extend Allard's celebrated rectifiability theorem to the setting of varifolds with locally bounded first variation with respect to an anisotropic integrand. In particular, we identify a sufficient and necessary condition on the integrand to obtain the rectifiability of every \(d\)-dimensional varifold with locally bounded first variation and positive \(d\)-dimensional density. In codimension one, this condition is shown to be equivalent to the strict convexity of the integrand with respect to the tangent plane.

Regularity of Minimizers of Shape Optimization Problems involving Perimeter

We prove existence and regularity of optimal shapes for the problem$$\min\Big\{P(Ω)+\mathcal{G}(Ω):\ Ω\subset D,\ |Ω|=m\Big\},$$where $P$ denotes the perimeter, $|\cdot|$ is the volume, and the functional $\mathcal{G}$ is either one of the following:\textless{}ul\textgreater{}\textless{}li\textgreater{} the Dirichlet energy $E\_f$, with respect to a (possibly sign-changing) function $f\in L^p$;\textless{}/li\textgreater{}\textless{}li\textgreater{}a spectral functional of the form $F(λ\_{1},\dots,λ\_{k})$, where $λ\_k$ is the $k$th eigenvalue of the Dirichlet Laplacian and $F:\mathbb{R}^k\to\mathbb{R}$ is Lipschitz continuous and increasing in each variable.\textless{}/li\textgreater{}\textless{}/ul\textgreater{}The domain $D$ is the whole space $\mathbb{R}^d$ or a bounded domain. We also give general assumptions on the functional $\mathcal{G}$ so that the result remains valid.

Structure of solutions of multidimensional conservation laws with discontinuous flux and applications to uniqueness

We investigate the structure of solutions of conservation laws with discontinuous flux under quite general assumption on the flux. We show that any entropy solution admits traces on the discontinuity set of the coefficients and we use this to prove the validity of a generalized Kato inequality for any pair of solutions. Applications to uniqueness of solutions are then given.

A direct approach to Plateau's problem in any codimension

This paper aims to propose a direct approach to solve the Plateau's problem in codimension higher than one. The problem is formulated as the minimization of the Hausdorff measure among a family of $d$-rectifiable closed subsets of $\mathbb R^n$: following the previous work \cite{DelGhiMag} the existence result is obtained by a compactness principle valid under fairly general assumptions on the class of competitors. Such class is then specified to give meaning to boundary conditions. We also show that the obtained minimizers are regular up to a set of dimension less than $(d-1)$.

BV Estimates in Optimal Transportation and Applications

In this paper we study the BV regularity for solutions of variational problems in Optimal Transportation. As an application we recover BV estimates for solutions of some non-linear parabolic PDE by means of optimal transportation techniques. We also prove that the Wasserstein projection of a measure with BV density on the set of measures with density bounded by a given BV function f is of bounded variation as well. In particular, in the case f = 1 (projection onto a set of densities with an L^\infty bound) we precisely prove that the total variation of the projection does not exceed the total variation of the projected measure. This is an estimate which can be iterated, and is therefore very useful in some evolutionary PDEs (crowd motion,. . .). We also establish some properties of the Wasserstein projection which are interesting in their own, and allow for instance to prove uniqueness of such a projection in a very general framework.

Existence of isoperimetric sets with densities "converging from below" in $\mathbb{R}^N$

In this paper, we consider the isoperimetric problem in the space $\mathbb{R}^N$ with density. Our result states that, if the density f is l.s.c. and converges to a positive limit at infinity, being smaller than this limit far from the origin, then isoperimetric sets exist for all volumes. Several known results or counterexamples show that the present result is essentially sharp. The special case of our result for radial and increasing densities positively answers a conjecture made in [10].

Regularity of free boundaries in anisotropic capillarity problems and the validity of Young's law

Local volume-constrained minimizers in anisotropic capillarity problems develop free boundaries on the walls of their containers. We prove the regularity of the free boundary outside a closed negligible set, showing in particular the validity of Young's law at almost every point of the free boundary. Our regularity results are not specific to capillarity problems, and actually apply to sets of finite perimeter (and thus to codimension one integer rectifiable currents) arising as minimizers in other variational problems with free boundaries.

Existence and regularity of minimizers for some spectral functionals with perimeter constraint

In this paper we prove that the shape optimization problem $$\min\left\{λ_k(Ω):\ Ω\subset\R^d,\ Ω \hbox{open},\ P(Ω)=1,\ |Ω|<+\infty\right\},$$ has a solution for any $k\in\N$ and dimension $d$. Moreover, every solution is a bounded connected open set with boundary which is $C^{1,α}$ outside a closed set of Hausdorff dimension $d-8$. Our results are more general and apply to spectral functionals of the form $f(λ_{k_1}(Ω),\dots,λ_{k_p}(Ω))$, for increasing functions $f$ satisfying some suitable bi-Lipschitz type condition.

Faber-Krahn inequalities in sharp quantitative form

The classical Faber-Krahn inequality asserts that balls (uniquely) minimize the first eigenvalue of the Dirichlet-Laplacian among sets with given volume. In this paper we prove a sharp quantitative enhancement of this result, thus confirming a conjecture by Nadirashvili and Bhattacharya-Weitsman. More generally, the result applies to every optimal Poincaré-Sobolev constant for the embeddings $W^{1,2}_0(Ω)\hookrightarrow L^q(Ω)$.

Rigidity of equality cases in Steiner's perimeter inequality

Characterization results for equality cases and for rigidity of equality cases in Steiner's perimeter inequality are presented. (By rigidity, we mean the situation when all equality cases are vertical translations of the Steiner's symmetral under consideration.) We achieve this through the introduction of a suitable measure-theoretic notion of connectedness and a fine analysis of barycenter functions for sets of finite perimeter having segments as orthogonal sections with respect to an hyperplane.

Existence of Eulerian solutions to the semigeostrophic equations in physical space: the 2-dimensional periodic case

In this paper we use the new regularity and stability estimates for Alexandrov solutions to Monge-Ampere equations estabilished by G.De Philippis and A.Figalli to provide a global in time existence of distributional solutions to a semigeostrophic equation on the 2-dimensional torus, under very mild assumptions on the initial data. A link with Lagrangian solutions is also discussed.

Sobolev regularity for Monge-Ampère type equations

In this note we prove that, if the cost function satisfies some necessary structural conditions and the densities are bounded away from zero and infinity, then strictly $c$-convex potentials arising in optimal transportation belong to $W^{2,1+κ}_{\rm loc}$ for some $κ>0$. This generalizes some recents results concerning the regularity of strictly convex Alexandrov solutions of the Monge-Ampère equation with right hand side bounded away from zero and infinity.

On the Aleksandrov-Bakelman-Pucci estimate for the infinity Laplacian

We prove $L^\infty$ bounds and estimates of the modulus of continuity of solutions to the Poisson problem for the normalized infinity and $p$-Laplacian, namely \[ -Δ_p^N u=f\qquad\text{for $n<p\leq\infty$.} \] We are able to provide a stable family of results depending continuously on the parameter $p$. We also prove the failure of the classical Alexandrov-Bakelman-Pucci estimate for the normalized infinity Laplacian and propose alternate estimates.
