Contact open books with exotic pages

We consider a fixed contact 3-manifold that admits infinitely many compact Stein fillings which are all homeomorphic but pairwise non-diffeomorphic. Each of these fillings gives rise to a closed contact 5-manifold described as a contact open book whose page is the filling at hand and whose monodromy is the identity symplectomorphism. We show that the resulting infinitely many contact 5-manifolds are all diffeomorphic but pairwise non-contactomorphic. Moreover, we explicitly determine these contact 5-manifolds.

Symplectic fillings of lens spaces as Lefschetz fibrations

We construct a positive allowable Lefschetz fibration over the disk on any minimal weak symplectic filling of the canonical contact structure on a lens space. Using this construction we prove that any minimal symplectic filling of the canonical contact structure on a lens space is obtained by a sequence of rational blowdowns from the minimal resolution of the corresponding complex two-dimensional cyclic quotient singularity.

Persistent homology and Floer-Novikov theory

We construct "barcodes" for the chain complexes over Novikov rings that arise in Novikov's Morse theory for closed one-forms and in Floer theory on not-necessarily-monotone symplectic manifolds. In the case of classical Morse theory these coincide with the barcodes familiar from persistent homology. Our barcodes completely characterize the filtered chain homotopy type of the chain complex; in particular they subsume in a natural way previous filtered Floer-theoretic invariants such as boundary depth and torsion exponents, and also reflect information about spectral invariants. We moreover prove a continuity result which is a natural analogue both of the classical bottleneck stability theorem in persistent homology and of standard continuity results for spectral invariants, and we use this to prove a C^0-robustness result for the fixed points of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms. Our approach, which is rather different from the standard methods of persistent homology, is based on a non-Archimedean singular value decomposition for the boundary operator of the chain complex.

Cylindrical contact homology and topological entropy

We establish a relation between the growth of the cylindrical contact homology of a contact manifold and the topological entropy of Reeb flows on this manifold. We show that if a contact manifold $(M,ξ)$ admits a hypertight contact form $λ_0$ for which the cylindrical contact homology has exponential homotopical growth rate, then the Reeb flow of every contact form on $(M,ξ)$ has positive topological entropy. Using this result, we provide numerous new examples of contact 3-manifolds on which every Reeb flow has positive topological entropy.

Reeb Dynamics of the Link of the $A_n$ Singularity

The link of the $A_n$ singularity, $L_{A_n} \subset \mathbb{C}^3$ admits a natural contact structure $ξ_0$ coming from the set of complex tangencies. The canonical contact form $α_0$ associated to $ξ_0$ is degenerate and thus has no isolated Reeb orbits. We show that there is a nondegenerate contact form for a contact structure equivalent to $ξ_0$ that has two isolated simple periodic Reeb orbits. We compute the Conley-Zehnder index of these simple orbits and their iterates. From these calculations we compute the positive $S^1$-equivariant symplectic homology groups for $\left(L_{A_n}, ξ_0 \right)$. In addition, we prove that $\left(L_{A_n}, ξ_0 \right)$ is contactomorphic to the Lens space $L(n+1,n)$, equipped with its canonical contact structure $ξ_{std}$.

SYZ Mirror Symmetry for Dirichlet Branes

In this thesis, we study a class of special Lagrangian submanifolds of toric Calabi-Yau manifolds and construct their mirrors using some techniques developed in the SYZ programme. We present a justification on the conjecture on the mirror construction of D- branes in Aganagic-Vafa [2]. We apply the techniques employed in Chan-Lau-Leung [8] and Chan [6], which give the SYZ mirror construction for D-branes. Recently, Chan-Lau-Leung [8] has given an explicit mirror construction for toric Calabi-Yau manifolds as complex algebraic varieties. Inspired by the SYZ transformation of D-branes in Leung-Yau-Zaslow[29], Chan[6] has defined a generalised mirror construction for a larger class of Lagrangian subspaces, which is important to our situation. The results point towards a need for further quantum correction of the SYZ transform for Lagrangian subspaces in order to recover physicists mirror prediction of counting holomorphic discs in Ooguri-Vafa [34]. When compare to physicists prediction of the Aganagic-Vafa mirror branes, such naive SYZ transform fails to coincide with the prediction. The main reasons lies in the fact that the SYZ transformation does not capture open Gromov-Witten inva

Lusternik-Schnirelmann Theory and Closed Reeb Orbits

We develop a variant of Lusternik-Schnirelmann theory for the shift operator in equivariant Floer and symplectic homology. Our key result is that the spectral invariants are strictly decreasing under the action of the shift operator when periodic orbits are isolated. As an application, we prove new multiplicity results for simple closed Reeb orbits on the standard contact sphere, the unit cotangent bundle to the sphere and some other contact manifolds. We also show that the lower Conley--Zehnder index enjoys a certain recurrence property and revisit and reprove from a different perspective a variant of the common jump theorem of Long and Zhu. This is the second, combinatorial ingredient in the proof of the multiplicity results.

Fukaya categories in Koszul duality theory

In this paper, we define $A_{\infty}$-Koszul duals for directed $A_{\infty}$-categories in terms of twists in their $A_{\infty}$-derived categories. Then, we compute a concrete formula of $A_{\infty}$-Koszul duals for path algebras with directed $A_n$-type Gabriel quivers. To compute an $A_\infty$-Koszul dual of such an algebra $A$, we construct a directed subcategory of a Fukaya category which are $A_\infty$-derived equivalent to the category of $A$-modules and compute Dehn twists as twists. The formula unveils all the ext groups of simple modules of the parh algebras and their higher composition structures.

Shifted symplectic Lie algebroids

Shifted symplectic Lie and $L_\infty$ algebroids model formal neighbourhoods of manifolds in shifted symplectic stacks, and serve as target spaces for twisted variants of classical AKSZ topological field theory. In this paper, we classify zero-, one- and two-shifted symplectic algebroids and their higher gauge symmetries, in terms of classical geometric "higher structures", such as Courant algebroids twisted by $Ω^2$-gerbes. As applications, we produce new examples of twisted Courant algebroids from codimension-two cycles, and we give symplectic interpretations for several well known features of higher structures (such as twists, Pontryagin classes, and tensor products). The proofs are valid in the $C^\infty$, holomorphic and algebraic settings, and are based on a number of technical results on the homotopy theory of $L_\infty$ algebroids and their differential forms, which may be of independent interest.

Homotopic properties of Kähler orbifolds

We prove the formality and the evenness of odd-degree Betti numbers for compact Kähler orbifolds, by adapting the classical proofs for Kähler manifolds. As a consequence, we obtain examples of symplectic orbifolds not admitting any Kähler orbifold structure. We also review the known examples of non-formal simply connected Sasakian manifolds, and produce an example of a non-formal quasi-regular Sasakian manifold with Betti numbers $b_1=0$ and $b_2\,> 1$.

Tight Contact Structures via Admissible Transverse Surgery

We investigate the line between tight and overtwisted for surgeries on fibred transverse knots in contact 3-manifolds. When the contact structure $ξ_K$ is supported by the fibred knot $K \subset M$, we obtain a characterisation of when negative surgeries result in a contact structure with non-vanishing Heegaard Floer contact class. To do this, we leverage information about the contact structure $ξ_{\overline{K}}$ supported by the mirror knot $\overline{K} \subset -M$. We derive several corollaries about the existence of tight contact structures, L-space knots outside $S^3$, non-planar contact structures, and non-planar Legendrian knots.

Trisections of Lefschetz Pencils

Donaldson showed that every closed symplectic 4-manifold can be given the structure of a topological Lefschetz pencil. Gay and Kirby showed that every closed 4-manifold has a trisection. In this paper we relate these two structure theorems, showing how to construct a trisection directly from a topological Lefschetz pencil. This trisection is such that each of the three sectors is a regular neighborhood of a regular fiber of the pencil. This is a 4-dimensional analog of the following trivial 3-dimensional result: For every open book decomposition of a 3-manifold M, there is a decomposition of M into three handlebodies, each of which is a regular neighborhood of a page.

Local model for the moduli space of affine vortices

We show that the moduli space of regular affine vortices, which are solutions of the symplectic vortex equation over the complex plane, has the structure of a smooth manifold. The construction uses Ziltener's Fredholm theory results [31]. We also extend the result to the case of affine vortices over the upper half plane. These results are necessary ingredients in defining the "open quantum Kirwan map" proposed by Woodward [24].

Brieskorn Manifolds, Positive Sasakian Geometry, and Contact Topology

Using $S^1$-equivariant symplectic homology, in particular its mean Euler characteristic, of the natural filling of links of Brieskorn-Pham polynomials, we prove the existence of infinitely many inequivalent contact structures on various manifolds, including in dimension 5 the k-fold connected sums of $S^2\times S^3$ and certain rational homology spheres. We then apply our result to show that on these manifolds the moduli space of classes of positive Sasakian structures has infinitely many components. We also apply our results to give lower bounds on the number of components of the moduli space of Sasaki-Einstein metrics on certain homotopy spheres. Finally a new family of Sasaki-Einstein metrics of real dimension 20 on $S^5$ is exhibited.

Quaternionic toric manifolds

In the present paper we introduce and study a new notion of toric manifold in the quaternionic setting. We develop a construction with which, starting from appropriate $m$-dimensional Delzant polytopes, we obtain manifolds of real dimension $4m$, acted on by $m$ copies of the group ${\rm Sp}(1)$ of unit quaternions. These manifolds are quaternionic regular and can be endowed with a $4$-plectic structure and a generalized moment map. Convexity properties of the image of the moment map are studied. Quaternionic toric manifolds appear to be a large enough class of examples where one can test and study new results in quaternionic geometry.

A flat Higgs bundle structure on the complexified Kähler cone

We shall construct a natural Higgs bundle structure on the complexified Kähler cone of a compact Kähler manifold, which can be seen as an analogy of the classical Higgs bundle structure associated to a variation of Hodge structure. In the proof of the flat-ness of our Higgs bundle, we find a commutator identity that can be used to decode the variational properties of the polarized Hodge-Lefschetz module structure on the fibres of our Higgs bundle. Thus we can use a generalized version of Lu's Hodge metric to study the curvature property of the complexified Kähler cone. In particular, it implies that the above Hodge metric defines a Kähler metric on the complexified Kähler cone with negative holomorphic sectional curvature, which can be seen as a new result on Wilson's conjecture.

A construction of commuting systems of integrable symplectic birational maps. Lie-Poisson case

We give a construction of completely integrable ($2n$)-dimensional Hamiltonian systems with symplectic brackets of the Lie-Poisson type (linear in coordinates) and with quadratic Hamilton functions. Applying to any such system the so called Kahan-Hirota-Kimura discretization scheme, we arrive at a birational ($2n$)-dimensional map. We show that this map is symplectic with respect to a symplectic structure that is a perturbation of the original symplectic structure on $\mathbb R^{2n}$, and possesses $n$ independent integrals of motion, which are perturbations of the original Hamilton functions and are in involution with respect to the invariant symplectic structure. Thus, this map is completely integrable in the Liouville-Arnold sense. Moreover, under a suitable normalization of the original $n$-tuples of commuting vector fields, their Kahan-Hirota-Kimura discretizations also commute and share the invariant symplectic structure and the $n$ integrals of motion. This paper extends our previous ones, arXiv:1606.08238 [nlin.SI] and arXiv:1607.07085 [nlin.SI], where similar results were obtained for Hamiltonian systems with a constant (canonical) symplectic structure and cubic Hamilton f
