A Survey on Automated Driving System Testing: Landscapes and Trends

Automated Driving Systems (ADS) have made great achievements in recent years thanks to the efforts from both academia and industry. A typical ADS is composed of multiple modules, including sensing, perception, planning, and control, which brings together the latest advances in different domains. Despite these achievements, safety assurance of ADS is of great significance, since unsafe behavior of ADS can bring catastrophic consequences. Testing has been recognized as an important system validation approach that aims to expose unsafe system behavior; however, in the context of ADS, it is extremely challenging to devise effective testing techniques, due to the high complexity and multidisciplinarity of the systems. There has been great much literature that focuses on the testing of ADS, and a number of surveys have also emerged to summarize the technical advances. Most of the surveys focus on the system-level testing performed within software simulators, and they thereby ignore the distinct features of different modules. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey on the existing ADS testing literature, which takes into account both module-level and system-level testing. Specifically, we make the following contributions: (1) we survey the module-level testing techniques for ADS and highlight the technical differences affected by the features of different modules; (2) we also survey the system-level testing techniques, with focuses on the empirical studies that summarize the issues occurring in system development or deployment, the problems due to the collaborations between different modules, and the gap between ADS testing in simulators and the real world; (3) we identify the challenges and opportunities in ADS testing, which pave the path to the future research in this field.

Global Hilbert expansion for the relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann system

Consider the relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann system describing the dynamics of an electron gas in the presence of a fixed ion background. Thanks to recent works \cite{Germain-Masmoudi-ASENS-2014, Guo-Ionescu-Pausader-JMP-2014} and \cite{Deng-Ionescu-Pausader-ARMA-2017}, we establish the global-in-time validity of its Hilbert expansion and derive the limiting relativistic Euler-Maxwell system as the mean free path goes to zero. Our method is based on the $L^2-L^{\infty}$ framework and the Glassey-Strauss Representation of the electromagnetic field, with auxiliary $H^1$ estimate and $W^{1,\infty}$ estimates to control the characteristic curves and corresponding $L^{\infty}$ norm.

The Massless Electron limit of the Vlasov-Poisson-Landau system

Due to ion-electron collisions, it is impossible to derive any two-fluid model for plasma as a direct hydrodynamic limit of the Vlasov-Poisson-Landau system for ions and electrons. At the same time, electrons are much lighter than their ion counterparts. In this work, we derive the massless electron limit of the Vlasov-Poisson-Landau system. This is done via a re-scaling of the electron velocity, leading to multiple velocity scales. Importantly, we demonstrate that ion-electron collisions vanish in this limit, due to special structure of the Landau collisions. We also show that this is invalid for the classical Boltzmann kernel with hard sphere interaction. This mechanism serves as the first step for the derivation of the two-fluid model for ions from a two-species kinetic equation.

Hydrodynamic Limit of a Kinetic Gas Flow Past an Obstacle

Given an obstacle in $\mathbb{R}^3$ and a non-zero velocity with small amplitude at the infinity, we construct the unique steady Boltzmann solution flowing around such an obstacle with the prescribed velocity as $|x|\to \infty$, which approaches the corresponding Navier-Stokes steady flow, as the mean-free path goes to zero. Furthermore, we establish the error estimate between the Boltzmann solution and its Navier-Stokes approximation. Our method consists of new $L^6$ and $L^3$ estimates in the unbounded exterior domain, as well as an iterative scheme preserving the positivity of the distribution function.

Identification of diffracted vortex beams at different propagation distances using deep learning

Orbital angular momentum of light is regarded as a valuable resource in quantum technology, especially in quantum communication and quantum sensing and ranging. However, the OAM state of light is susceptible to undesirable experimental conditions such as propagation distance and phase distortions, which hinders the potential for the realistic implementation of relevant technologies. In this article, we exploit an enhanced deep learning neural network to identify different OAM modes of light at multiple propagation distances with phase distortions. Specifically, our trained deep learning neural network can efficiently identify the vortex beam's topological charge and propagation distance with 97% accuracy. Our technique has important implications for OAM based communication and sensing protocols.

The Vlasov-Poisson-Landau System with the Specular-Reflection Boundary Condition

We consider the Vlasov-Poisson-Landau system, a classical model for a dilute collisional plasma interacting through Coulombic collisions and with its self-consistent electrostatic field. We establish global stability and well-posedness near the Maxwellian equilibrium state with decay in time and some regularity results for small initial perturbations, in any general bounded domain (including a torus as in a tokamak device), in the presence of specular reflection boundary condition. We provide a new improved $L^{2}\rightarrow L^{\infty }$ framework: $L^{2}$ energy estimate combines only with $S^{p}$ estimate for the ultra-parabolic equation.

Linear instability of $Z$-pinch in plasma (I): Inviscid case

The z-pinch is a classical steady state for the MHD model, where a confined plasma fluid is separated by vacuum, in the presence of a magnetic field which is generated by a prescribed current along the z direction. We develop a variational framework to study its stability in the absence of viscosity effect, and demonstrate for the first time that any such a z-pinch is always unstable. Moreover, we discover a sufficient condition such that the eigenvalues can be unbounded, which leads to ill-posedness of the linearized MHD system.

Linear instability of $Z$-pinch in plasma (II): Viscous case

The z-pinch is a classical steady state for the MHD model, where a confined plasma fluid is separated by vacuum, in the presence of a magnetic field which is generated by a prescribed current along the $z$ direction. We develop a scaled variational framework to study its stability in the presence of viscosity effect, and demonstrate that any such z-pinch is always unstable. We also establish the existence of a largest growing mode, which dominates the linear growth of the linear MHD system.

The Landau equation with the specular reflection boundary condition

The existence and stability of the Landau equation (1936) in a general bounded domain with a physical boundary condition is a long-outstanding open problem. This work proves the global stability of the Landau equation with the Coulombic potential in a general smooth bounded domain with the specular reflection boundary condition for initial perturbations of the Maxwellian equilibrium states. The highlight of this work also comes from the low-regularity assumptions made for the initial distribution. This work generalizes the recent global stability result for the Landau equation in a periodic box (KGH-2016). Our methods consist of the generalization of the wellposedness theory for the Fokker-Planck equation (HJV-2014, HJJ-2018) and the extension of the boundary value problem to a whole space problem, as well as the use of a recent extension of De Giorgi-Nash-Moser theory for the kinetic Fokker-Planck equations (GIMV-2016) and the Morrey estimates (Polidoro-Ragusa-1998) to further control the velocity derivatives, which ensures the uniqueness. Our methods provide a new understanding of the grazing collisions in the Landau theory for an initial-boundary value problem.

A $L^{2}$ to $L^{\infty}$ approach for the Landau Equation

Consider the Landau equation with Coulomb potential in a periodic box. We develop a new $L^{2}\rightarrow L^{\infty }$ framework to construct global unique solutions near Maxwellian with small $L^{\infty }\ $norm. The first step is to establish global $L^{2}$ estimates with strong velocity weight and time decay, under the assumption of $L^{\infty }$ bound, which is further controlled by such $L^{2}$ estimates via De Giorgi's method \cite{golse2016harnack} and \cite{mouhot2015holder}. The second step is to employ estimates in $S_{p}$ spaces to control velocity derivatives to ensure uniqueness, which is based on Holder estimates via De Giorgi's method \cite{golse2016harnack}, \cite{golse2015holder}, and \cite{mouhot2015holder}.

Asymptotic Analysis of Transport Equation in Annulus

We consider the diffusive limit of a steady neutron transport equation with one-speed velocity in a two-dimensional annulus. A classical theorem states that the solution can be approximated in $L^{\infty}$ by the leading order interior solution plus the corresponding Knudsen layers in the diffusive limit. In this paper, we construct a counterexample of this result via a different boundary layer expansion with geometric correction.

Asymptotic Stability of the Boltzmann Equation with Maxwell Boundary Conditions

In a general $C^1$ domain, we study the perturbative Cauchy theory for the Boltzmann equation with Maxwell boundary conditions with an accommodation coefficient $α$ in $(\sqrt{2/3},1]$, and discuss this threshold. We consider polynomial or stretched exponential weights $m(v)$ and prove existence, uniqueness and exponential trend to equilibrium around a global Maxwellian in $L^\infty_{x,v}(m)$. Of important note is the fact that the methods do not involve contradiction arguments.

Existence and BV-regularity for Neutron transport equation in non-convex domain

This paper considers the neutron transport equation in bounded domain with a combination of the diffusive boundary condition and the in-flow boundary condition. We firstly study the existence of solution in any fixed time by $L^2-L^{\infty}$ method, which was established to study Boltzmann equation in \cite{[Guo2]}. Based on the uniform estimates of the solution, we also consider the BV-regularity of the solution in non-convex domain. A cut-off function, which aims to exclude all the characteristics emanating from the grazing set $\mathfrak{S}_B$, has been constructed precisely.

Incompressible hydrodynamic approximation with viscous heating to the Boltzmann equation

The incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier system with viscous heating was first derived from the Boltzmann equation in the form of the diffusive scaling by Bardos-Levermore-Ukai-Yang (2008). The purpose of this paper is to justify such an incompressible hydrodynamic approximation to the Boltzmann equation in $L^2\cap L^\infty$ setting in a periodic box. Based on an odd-even expansion of the solution with respect to the microscopic velocity, the diffusive coefficients are determined by the incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier system with viscous heating and the super Burnett functions. More importantly, the remainder of the expansion is proven to decay exponentially in time via an $L^2-L^\infty$ approach on the condition that the initial data satisfies the mass, momentum and energy conversation laws.

Pulse Shaped OFDM for 5G Systems

OFDM-based waveforms with filtering or windowing functionalities are considered key enablers for a flexible air-interface design for multi-service support in future 5G systems. One candidate from this category of waveforms is pulse shaped OFDM, which follows the idea of subcarrier filtering and aims at fully maintaining the advantages of standard OFDM systems while addressing their drawbacks. In this paper, we elaborate on several pulse shaping design methods, and show how pulse shapes can be exploited as an additional degree of freedom to provide better frequency localization and more efficient spectrum utilization under a pre-defined spectrum mask. The performance analysis and evaluation results show that, for a practical mobile communication systems, the application of pulse shaping is a simple and effective means to achieve a lower out-of-band leakage for OFDM systems at virtually no costs. In fact, the complexity increase amounts to 1-2% compared to CP-OFDM only. In addition, the system's robustness against both time and frequency distortions is shown to be substantially improved by a proper pulse shape design. By allowing for the flexible configuration of physical layer parameters per sub-band according to the diverse requirements of future 5G services, pulse shaped OFDM systems can efficiently facilitate asynchronous transmissions and fragmented spectrum access, rendering it beneficial for various mobile-broadband and Internet-of-Things applications.

The Boltzmann equation with weakly inhomogeneous data in bounded domain

This paper is concerned with the Boltzmann equation with specular reflection boundary condition. We construct a unique global solution and obtain its large time asymptotic behavior in the case that the initial data is close enough to a radially symmetric homogeneous datum. The result extends the case of Cauchy problem considered by Arkeryd-Esposito-Pulvirenti [Comm. Math. Phys. 111(3): 393-407 (1987)] to the specular reflection boundary value problem in bounded domain.

A Maximum-Principle-Satisfying High-order Finite Volume Compact WENO Scheme for Scalar Conservation Laws

In this paper, a maximum-principle-satisfying finite volume compact scheme is proposed for solving scalar hyperbolic conservation laws. The scheme combines WENO schemes (Weighted Essentially Non-Oscillatory) with a class of compact schemes under a finite volume framework, in which the nonlinear WENO weights are coupled with lower order compact stencils. The maximum-principle-satisfying polynomial rescaling limiter in [Zhang and Shu, JCP, 2010] is adopted to construct the present schemes at each stage of an explicit Runge-Kutta method, without destroying high order accuracy and conservativity. Numerical examples for one and two dimensional problems including incompressible flows are presented to assess the good performance, maximum principle preserving, essentially non-oscillatory and highly accurate resolution of the proposed method.

A Positivity-preserving High Order Finite Volume Compact-WENO Scheme for Compressible Euler Equations

In this paper, a positivity-preserving fifth-order finite volume compact-WENO scheme is proposed for solving compressible Euler equations. As we know conservative compact finite volume schemes have high resolution properties while WENO (Weighted Essentially Non-Oscillatory) schemes are essentially non-oscillatory near flow discontinuities. We extend the main idea of WENO schemes to some classical compact finite volume schemes [32], where lower order compact stencils are combined with WENO nonlinear weights to get a higher order finite volume compact-WENO scheme. The newly developed positivity-preserving limiter [46,44] is used to preserve positive density and internal energy for compressible Euler equations of fluid dynamics. The HLLC (Harten, Lax, and van Leer with Contact) approximate Riemann solver [39,2] is used to get the numerical flux at the cell interfaces. Numerical tests are presented to demonstrate the high-order accuracy, positivity-preserving, high-resolution and robustness of the proposed scheme.

On the Weak Coupling Limit of Quantum Many-body Dynamics and the Quantum Boltzmann Equation

The rigorous derivation of the Uehling-Uhlenbeck equation from more fundamental quantum many-particle systems is a challenging open problem in mathematics. In this paper, we exam the weak coupling limit of quantum N-particle dynamics. We assume the integral of the microscopic interaction is zero and we assume W^{4,1} per-particle regularity on the coressponding BBGKY sequence so that we can rigorously commute limits and integrals. We prove that, if the BBGKY sequence does converge in some weak sense, then this weak-coupling limit must satisfy the infinite quantum Maxwell-Boltzmann hierarchy instead of the expected infinite Uehling-Uhlenbeck hierarchy, regardless of the statistics the particles obey. Our result indicates that, in order to derive the Uehling-Uhlenbeck equation, one must work with per-particle regularity bound below W^{4,1}.

Prandtl boundary layer expansions of steady Navier-Stokes flows over a moving plate

This paper concerns the validity of the Prandtl boundary layer theory in the inviscid limit for steady incompressible Navier-Stokes flows. The stationary flows, with small viscosity, are considered on $[0,L]\times \mathbb{R}_{+}$, assuming a no-slip boundary condition over a moving plate at $y=0$. We establish the validity of the Prandtl boundary layer expansion and its error estimates.

Spectral instability of symmetric shear flows in a two-dimensional channel

This paper concerns spectral instability of shear flows in the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with sufficiently large Reynolds number: $R\to \infty$. It is well-documented in the physical literature, going back to Heisenberg, C.C. Lin, Tollmien, Drazin and Reid, that generic plane shear profiles other than the linear Couette flow are linearly unstable for sufficiently large Reynolds number. In this work, we provide a complete mathematical proof of these physical results. In the case of a symmetric channel flow, our analysis gives exact unstable eigenvalues and eigenfunctions, showing that the solution could grow slowly at the rate of $e^{t/\sqrt {αR}}$, where $α$ is the small spatial frequency that remains between lower and upper marginal stability curves: $α_\mathrm{low}(R) \approx R^{-1/7}$ and $α_\mathrm{up}(R) \approx R^{-1/11}$. We introduce a new, operator-based approach, which avoids to deal with matching inner and outer asymptotic expansions, but instead involves a careful study of singularity in the critical layers by deriving pointwise bounds on the Green function of the corresponding Rayleigh and Airy operators.

Spectral stability of Prandtl boundary layers: an overview

In this paper we show how the stability of Prandtl boundary layers is linked to the stability of shear flows in the incompressible Navier Stokes equations. We then recall classical physical instability results, and give a short educational presentation of the construction of unstable modes for Orr Sommerfeld equations. We end the paper with a conjecture concerning the validity of Prandtl boundary layer asymptotic expansions.

The Euler-Maxwell two-fluid system in 3D

The fundamental "two-fluid" model for describing plasma dynamics is given by the Euler-Maxwell system, in which compressible ion and electron fluids interact with their own self-consistent electromagnetic field. We prove global stability of a constant neutral background, in the sense that irrotational, smooth and localized perturbations of a constant background with small amplitude lead to global smooth solutions in three space dimensions for the Euler-Maxwell system. Our construction applies equally well to other plasma models such as the Euler-Poisson system for two-fluids and a relativistic Euler-Maxwell system for two fluids. Our solutions appear to be the first nontrivial global smooth solutions in all of these models.

Unstable Galaxy Models

The dynamics of collisionless galaxy can be described by the Vlasov-Poisson system. By the Jean's theorem, all the spherically symmetric steady galaxy models are given by a distribution of Φ(E,L), where E is the particle energy and L the angular momentum. In a celebrated Doremus-Feix-Baumann Theorem, the galaxy model Φ(E,L) is stable if the distribution Φ is monotonically decreasing with respect to the particle energy E. On the other hand, the stability of Φ(E,L) remains largely open otherwise. Based on a recent abstract instability criterion of Guo-Lin, we constuct examples of unstable galaxy models of f(E,L) and f(E) in which f fails to be monotone in E.

Fourier Law and Non-Isothermal Boundary in the Boltzmann Theory

In the study of the heat transfer in the Boltzmann theory, the basic problem is to construct solutions to the steady problem for the Boltzmann equation in a general bounded domain with diffuse reflection boundary conditions corresponding to a non isothermal temperature of the wall. Denoted by δthe size of the temperature oscillations on the boundary, we develop a theory to characterize such a solution mathematically. We construct a unique solution F_s to the Boltzmann equation, which is dynamically asymptotically stable with exponential decay rate. Moreover, if the domain is convex and the temperature of the wall is continuous we show that F_s is continuous away from the grazing set. If the domain is non-convex, discontinuities can form and then propagate along the forward characteristics. We show that they actually form for a suitable smooth temperature profile. We remark that this solution differs from a local equilibrium Maxwellian, hence it is a genuine non equilibrium stationary solution. Our analysis is based on recent studies of the boundary value problems for the Boltzmann equation but with new constructive coercivity estimates for both steady and dynamic cases. A natural question in this setup is to determine if the general Fourier law, stating that the heat conduction vector q is proportional to the temperature gradient, is valid. As an application of our result we establish an expansion in δfor F_s whose first order term F_1 satisfies a linear, parameter free equation. Consequently, we discover that if the Fourier law were valid for F_s, then the temperature of F_1 must be linear in a slab. Such a necessary condition contradicts available numerical simulations, leading to the prediction of break-down of the Fourier law in the kinetic regime.

A note on the Prandtl boundary layers

This note concerns a nonlinear ill-posedness of the Prandtl equation and an invalidity of asymptotic boundary-layer expansions of incompressible fluid flows near a solid boundary. Our analysis is built upon recent remarkable linear ill-posedness results established by Gérard-Varet and Dormy [2], and an analysis in Guo and Tice [5]. We show that the asymptotic boundary-layer expansion is not valid for non-monotonic shear layer flows in Sobolev spaces. We also introduce a notion of weak well-posedness and prove that the nonlinear Prandtl equation is not well-posed in this sense near non-stationary and non-monotonic shear flows. On the other hand, we are able to verify that Oleinik's monotonic solutions are well-posed.

Compressible, inviscid Rayleigh-Taylor instability

We consider the Rayleigh-Taylor problem for two compressible, immiscible, inviscid, barotropic fluids evolving with a free interface in the presence of a uniform gravitational field. After constructing Rayleigh-Taylor steady-state solutions with a denser fluid lying above the free interface with the second fluid, we turn to an analysis of the equations obtained from linearizing around such a steady state. By a natural variational approach, we construct normal mode solutions that grow exponentially in time with rate like $e^{t \sqrt{\absξ}}$, where $ξ$ is the spatial frequency of the normal mode. A Fourier synthesis of these normal mode solutions allows us to construct solutions that grow arbitrarily quickly in the Sobolev space $H^k$, which leads to an ill-posedness result for the linearized problem. Using these pathological solutions, we then demonstrate ill-posedness for the original non-linear problem in an appropriate sense. More precisely, we use a contradiction argument to show that the non-linear problem does not admit reasonable estimates of solutions for small time in terms of the initial data.

Decay of dissipative equations and negative Sobolev spaces

We develop a general energy method for proving the optimal time decay rates of the solutions to the dissipative equations in the whole space. Our method is applied to classical examples such as the heat equation, the compressible Navier-Stokes equations and the Boltzmann equation. In particular, the optimal decay rates of the higher-order spatial derivatives of solutions are obtained. The negative Sobolev norms are shown to be preserved along time evolution and enhance the decay rates. We use a family of scaled energy estimates with minimum derivative counts and interpolations among them without linear decay analysis.

Decay of viscous surface waves without surface tension

Consider a viscous fluid of finite depth below the air. In the absence of the surface tension effect at the air-fluid interface, the long time behavior of a free surface with small amplitude has been an intriguing question since the work of Beale \cite{beale_1}. In this monograph, we develop a new mathematical framework to resolve this question. If the free interface is horizontally infinite, we establish that it decays to a flat surface at an algebraic rate. On the other hand, if the free interface is periodic, we establish that it decays at an almost exponential rate, i.e. at an arbitrarily fast algebraic rate determined by the smallness of the data. Our framework contains several novel techniques, which include: (1) a local well-posedness theory of the Navier-Stokes equations in the presence of a moving boundary; (2) a two-tier energy method that couples the boundedness of high-order energy to the decay of low-order energy, the latter of which is necessary to balance out the growth of the highest derivatives of the free interface; (3) control of both negative and positive Sobolev norms, which enhances interpolation estimates and allows for the decay of infinite surface waves; (4) a localization procedure that is compatible with the energy method and allows for curved lower surface geometry in the periodic case. Our decay results lead to the construction of global-in-time solutions to the surface wave problem.

Momentum Regularity and Stability of the Relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann System

In the study of solutions to the relativistic Boltzmann equation, their regularity with respect to the momentum variables has been an outstanding question, even local in time, due to the initially unexpected growth in the post-collisional momentum variables which was discovered in 1991 by Glassey & Strauss \cite{MR1105532}. We establish momentum regularity within energy spaces via a new splitting technique and interplay between the Glassey-Strauss frame and the center of mass frame of the relativistic collision operator. In a periodic box, these new momentum regularity estimates lead to a proof of global existence of classical solutions to the two-species relativistic Vlasov-Boltzmann-Maxwell system for charged particles near Maxwellian with hard ball interaction.

A fundamental two-fluid model for describing dynamics of a plasma is the Euler-Poisson system, in which compressible ion and electron fluids interact with their self-consistent electrostatic force. Global smooth electron dynamics were constructed in Guo due to dispersive effect of the electric field. In this paper, we construct global smooth irrotational solutions with small amplitude for ion dynamics in the Euler-Poisson system.

Modeling branching effects on source-sink relationships of the cotton plant

Compared with classical process-based models, the functional-structural plant models provide more efficient tools to explore the impact of changes in plant structures on plant functioning. In this paper we investigated the effects of branches on the sourcesink interaction for the cotton plant (Gossypium hirsutum L.) based on a two-treatment experiment conducted on cotton grown in the field: the singlestem plants and the plants with only two vegetative branches. It was observed that the branched cotton had more organs for the whole plant but the organs on the trunk were smaller than those on the single-stem cotton. The phytomer production of the branches was four or five growth cycles delayed compared with the main stem. The organs on the trunk had similar dynamics of expansion for both treatments. Effects of branches were evaluated by using the functionalstructural model GREENLAB. It allowed estimating the coefficients of sink strength to differentiate the biomass acquisition abilities of organs between different physiological ages. We found that the presence of the two vegetative branches increased the ground projection area of plant leaves and had led to slight changes on the directly measured parameters; the potential relative sink strengths of organs were found similar for the two treatments.

Global Hilbert Expansion for the Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann System

We study the Hilbert expansion for small Knudsen number $\varepsilon$ for the Vlasov-Boltzmann-Poisson system for an electron gas. The zeroth order term takes the form of local Maxwellian: $ F_{0}(t,x,v)=\frac{ρ_{0}(t,x)}{(2πθ_{0}(t,x))^{3/2}} e^{-|v-u_{0}(t,x)|^{2}/2θ_{0}(t,x)},\text{\ }θ_{0}(t,x)=Kρ_{0}^{2/3}(t,x).$ Our main result states that if the Hilbert expansion is valid at $t=0$ for well-prepared small initial data with irrotational velocity $u_0$, then it is valid for $0\leq t\leq \varepsilon ^{-{1/2}\frac{2k-3}{2k-2}},$ where $ρ_{0}(t,x)$ and $ u_{0}(t,x)$ satisfy the Euler-Poisson system for monatomic gas $γ=5/3$.

Decay and Continuity of Boltzmann Equation in Bounded Domains

Boundaries occur naturally in kinetic equations and boundary effects are crucial for dynamics of dilute gases governed by the Boltzmann equation. We develop a mathematical theory to study the time decay and continuity of Boltzmann solutions for four basic types of boundary conditions: inflow, bounce-back reflection, specular reflection, and diffuse reflection. We establish exponential decay in $L^{\infty}$ norm for hard potentials for general classes of smooth domains near an absolute Maxwellian. Moreover, in convex domains, we also establish continuity for these Boltzmann solutions away from the grazing set of the velocity at the boundary. Our contribution is based on a new $L^{2}$ decay theory and its interplay with delicate $% L^{\infty}$ decay analysis for the linearized Boltzmann equation, in the presence of many repeated interactions with the boundary.
