Stability of a point charge for the repulsive Vlasov-Poisson system

We consider solutions of the repulsive Vlasov-Poisson system which are a combination of a point charge and a small gas, i.e.\ measures of the form $δ_{(\mathcal{X}(t),\mathcal{V}(t))}+μ^2d{\bf x}d{\bf v}$ for some $(\mathcal{X}, \mathcal{V}):\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}^6$ and a small gas distribution $μ:\mathbb{R}\to L^2_{{\bf x},{\bf v}}$, and study asymptotic dynamics in the associated initial value problem. If initially suitable moments on $μ_0=μ(t=0)$ are small, we obtain a global solution of the above form, and the electric field generated by the gas distribution $μ$ decays at an almost optimal rate. Assuming in addition boundedness of suitable derivatives of $μ_0$, the electric field decays at an optimal rate and we derive a modified scattering dynamics for the motion of the point charge and the gas distribution. Our proof makes crucial use of the Hamiltonian structure. The linearized system is transport by the Kepler ODE, which we integrate exactly through an asymptotic action-angle transformation. Thanks to a precise understanding of the associated kinematics, moment and derivative control is achieved via a bootstrap analysis that relies on the decay of the electric field associated to $μ$. The asymptotic behavior can then be deduced from the properties of Poisson brackets in asymptotic action coordinates.

Scattering map for the Vlasov-Poisson system

We construct (modified) scattering operators for the Vlasov-Poisson system in three dimensions, mapping small asymptotic dynamics as $t\to -\infty$ to asymptotic dynamics as $t\to +\infty$. The main novelty is the construction of modified wave operators, but we also obtain a new simple proof of modified scattering. Our analysis is guided by the Hamiltonian structure of the Vlasov-Poisson system. Via a pseudo-conformal inversion we recast the question of asymptotic behavior in terms of local in time dynamics of a new equation with singular coefficients which is approximately integrated using a generating function.

The Einstein-Klein-Gordon coupled system: global stability of the Minkowski solution

We prove definitive results on the global stability of the flat space among solutions of the Einstein-Klein-Gordon system. Our main theorems in this monograph include: (1) A proof of global regularity (in wave coordinates) of solutions of the Einstein-Klein-Gordon coupled system, in the case of small, smooth, and localized perturbations of the stationary Minkowski solution; (2) Precise asymptotics of the metric components and the Klein-Gordon field as the time goes to infinity, including the construction of modified (nonlinear) scattering profiles and quantitative bounds for convergence; (3) Classical estimates on the solutions at null and timelike infinity, such as bounds on the metric components, weak peeling estimates of the Riemann curvature tensor, ADM and Bondi energy identities and estimates, and asymptotic description of null and timelike geodesics.

The profile decomposition for the hyperbolic Schrödinger equation

In this note, we prove the profile decomposition for hyperbolic Schrödinger (or mixed signature) equations on $\mathbb{R}^2$ in two cases, one mass-supercritical and one mass-critical. First, as a warm up, we show that the profile decomposition works for the ${\dot H}^{\frac12}$ critical problem, which gives a simple generalization of for instance one of the results in Fanelli-Visciglia (2013). Then, we give the derivation of the profile decomposition in the mass-critical case by proving an improved Strichartz estimate. We will use a very similar approach to that laid out in the notes of Killip-Visan (2008), but we are forced to do a double Whitney decomposition to accommodate an extra scaling symmetry that arises in the problem with mixed signature.

Modified scattering for the cubic Schrödinger equation on product spaces and applications

We consider the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation posed on the spatial domain $\mathbb{R}\times \mathbb{T}^d$. We prove modified scattering and construct modified wave operators for small initial and final data respectively ($1\leq d\leq 4)$. The key novelty comes from the fact that the modified asymptotic dynamics are dictated by the resonant system of this equation, which sustains interesting dynamics when $d\geq 2$. As a consequence, we obtain global solutions to the defocusing and focusing problems on $\mathbb{R}\times \mathbb{T}^d$ (for any $d\geq 2$) with infinitely growing high Sobolev norms $H^s$.

The Euler-Maxwell two-fluid system in 3D

The fundamental "two-fluid" model for describing plasma dynamics is given by the Euler-Maxwell system, in which compressible ion and electron fluids interact with their own self-consistent electromagnetic field. We prove global stability of a constant neutral background, in the sense that irrotational, smooth and localized perturbations of a constant background with small amplitude lead to global smooth solutions in three space dimensions for the Euler-Maxwell system. Our construction applies equally well to other plasma models such as the Euler-Poisson system for two-fluids and a relativistic Euler-Maxwell system for two fluids. Our solutions appear to be the first nontrivial global smooth solutions in all of these models.

Topography influence on the Lake equations in bounded domains

We investigate the influence of the topography on the lake equations which describe the two-dimensional horizontal velocity of a three-dimensional incompressible flow. We show that the lake equations are structurally stable under Hausdorff approximations of the fluid domain and $L^p$ perturbations of the depth. As a byproduct, we obtain the existence of a weak solution to the lake equations in the case of singular domains and rough bottoms. Our result thus extends earlier works by Bresch and Métivier treating the lake equations with a fixed topography and by Gérard-Varet and Lacave treating the Euler equations in singular domains.

Global Smooth Ion Dynamics in the Euler-Poisson System

A fundamental two-fluid model for describing dynamics of a plasma is the Euler-Poisson system, in which compressible ion and electron fluids interact with their self-consistent electrostatic force. Global smooth electron dynamics were constructed in Guo due to dispersive effect of the electric field. In this paper, we construct global smooth irrotational solutions with small amplitude for ion dynamics in the Euler-Poisson system.

On the global well-posedness of energy-critical Schrödinger equations in curved spaces

In this paper we present a method to study global regularity properties of solutions of large-data critical Schrodinger equations on certain noncompact Riemannian manifolds. We rely on concentration compactness arguments and a global Morawetz inequality adapted to the geometry of the manifold (in other words we adapt the method of Kenig-Merle to the variable coefficient case), and a good understanding of the corresponding Euclidean problem (in our case the main theorem of Colliander-Keel-Staffilani-Takaoka-Tao). As an application we prove global well-posedness and scattering in $H^1$ for the energy-critical defocusing initial-value problem (i\partial_t+Δ_\g)u=u|u|^{4} on the hyperbolic space $H^3$.
