Stability threshold for 2D shear flows near Couette of the Navier-Stokes equation

In this paper, we consider the stability threshold of the 2D shear flow $(U(y),0)^{\top}$ of the Navier-Stokes equation at high Reynolds number $Re$. When the shear flow is near in Sobolev norm to the Couette flow $(y,0)^{\top}$ in some sense, we prove that if the initial data $u_0$ satisfies $\|u_0-(U(y),0)^{\top}\|\leq εRe^{-1/3}$, then the solution of the 2D Navier-Stokes equation approaches to some shear flow which is also close to the Couette flow for $t\gg Re^{1/3}$, as $t\to\infty$.

Linear instability of $Z$-pinch in plasma (I): Inviscid case

The z-pinch is a classical steady state for the MHD model, where a confined plasma fluid is separated by vacuum, in the presence of a magnetic field which is generated by a prescribed current along the z direction. We develop a variational framework to study its stability in the absence of viscosity effect, and demonstrate for the first time that any such a z-pinch is always unstable. Moreover, we discover a sufficient condition such that the eigenvalues can be unbounded, which leads to ill-posedness of the linearized MHD system.

Linear instability of $Z$-pinch in plasma (II): Viscous case

The z-pinch is a classical steady state for the MHD model, where a confined plasma fluid is separated by vacuum, in the presence of a magnetic field which is generated by a prescribed current along the $z$ direction. We develop a scaled variational framework to study its stability in the presence of viscosity effect, and demonstrate that any such z-pinch is always unstable. We also establish the existence of a largest growing mode, which dominates the linear growth of the linear MHD system.

Viscous Shock Wave to an Inflow Problem for Compressible Viscous Gas with Large Density Oscillations

This paper is concerned with the inflow problem for the one-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations. For such a problem, F. M. Huang, A. Matsumura and X. D. Shi showed that there exists viscous shock wave solution to the inflow problem and both the boundary layer solution, the viscous shock wave, and their superposition are time-asymptotically nonlinear stable under small initial perturbation. The main purpose of this paper is to show that similar stability results still hold for a class of large initial perturbation which can allow the initial density to have large oscillations. The proofs are given by an elementary energy method and the key point is to deduce the desired uniform positive lower and upper bounds on the density.

Global existence of smooth solutions to three-dimensional turbulent flow equations

In this paper we are concerned with the global existence of smooth solutions to the turbulent flow equations for compressible flows in $\mathbb{R}^3$. The global well-posedness is proved under the condition that the initial data are close to the standard equilibrium state in $H^3$-framework. The proof relies on energy estimates about velocity, temperature, turbulent kinetic energy and rate of viscous dissipation. We use several new techniques to overcome the difficulties from the product of two functions and higher order norms. This is the first result concerning $k$-$\varepsilon$ model equations.

Global well-posedness for the two dimensional compressible MHD equations with large data

In this paper we are concerned with the global well-posedness for the compressible MHD equations with large data. We show that if the shear viscosity $μ$ is a positive constant and the bulk viscosity $λ$ is the power function of the density, that is, $λ(ρ)=ρ^β$ with $β>3$, then the two dimensional compressible MHD system with the periodic boundary conditions on the torus $\mathbb{T}^2$ have a unique global classical solution $(ρ, u,H)$. In this work we extended the results about compressible Navier-Stokes equations in \cite{Karzhikhov} to compressible MHD equations by applying several new techniques to overcome the coupling between velocity and magnetic field.

Optimal convergence rates for the three-dimensional turbulent flow equations

In this paper we are concerned with the convergence rate of solutions to the three-dimensional turbulent flow equations. By combining the $L^p$-$L^q$ estimates for the linearized equations and an elaborate energy method, the convergence rates are obtained in various norms for the solution to the equilibrium state in the whole space, when the initial perturbation of the equilibrium state is small in $H^3$-framework. More precisely, the optimal convergence rates of the solutions and its first order derivatives in $L^2$-norm are obtained when the $L^p$-norm of the perturbation is bounded for some $p\in[1, 6/5)$.
