Measurement of branching fractions and direct $CP$ asymmetries for $B \to Kπ$ and $B\toππ$ decays at Belle II

We report measurements of the branching fractions and direct $\it{CP}$ asymmetries of the decays $B^0 \to K^+ π^-$, $B^+ \to K^+ π^0$, $B^+ \to K^0 π^+$, and $B^0 \to K^0 π^0$, and use these for testing the standard model through an isospin-based sum rule. In addition, we measure the branching fraction and direct $\it{CP}$ asymmetry of the decay $B^+ \to π^+π^0$ and the branching fraction of the decay $B^0 \to π^+π^-$. The data are collected with the Belle II detector from $e^+e^-$ collisions at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance produced by the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy collider and contain $387\times 10^6$ bottom-antibottom meson pairs. Signal yields are determined in two-dimensional fits to background-discriminating variables, and range from 500 to 3900 decays, depending on the channel. We obtain $-0.03 \pm 0.13 \pm 0.04$ for the sum rule, in agreement with the standard model expectation of zero and with a precision comparable to the best existing determinations.

Measurement of the $B^{0} \rightarrow D^{*-} \ell^{+} ν_{\ell}$ branching ratio and $|V_{cb}|$ with a fully reconstructed accompanying $B$ meson in 2019-2021 Belle II data

We present a measurement of the $B^{0} \rightarrow D^{*-} \ell^{+} ν_{\ell}$ ($\ell=e,μ$) branching ratio and of the CKM parameter $|V_{cb}|$ using signal decays accompanied by a fully reconstructed $B$ meson. The Belle II data set of electron-positron collisions at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance, corresponding to 189.3$\,$fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, is analyzed. With the Caprini-Lellouch-Neubert form factor parameterization, the parameters $η_{\rm EW} F(1) |V_{cb}|$ and $ρ^{2}$ are extracted, where $η_{\rm EW}$ is an electroweak correction, $F(1)$ is a normalization factor and $ρ^{2}$ is a form factor shape parameter. We reconstruct 516 signal decays and thereby obtain $\mathcal{B} (B^{0} \rightarrow D^{*-} \ell^{+} ν_{\ell} ) = \left(5.27 \pm 0.22~\rm{\left(stat\right)} \pm 0.38~\rm{\left(syst\right)}\right) \%$, $η_{EW} F(1) |V_{cb}| \times 10^{3} = 34.6 \pm 1.8~\rm{\left(stat\right)} \pm 1.7~\rm{\left(syst\right)}$, and $ρ^{2} = 0.94 \pm 0.18~\rm{\left(stat\right)} \pm 0.11~\rm{\left(syst\right)}$.

An improved search for the electric dipole moment of the $τ$ lepton

We report a measurement of the electric dipole moment of the $τ$ lepton ($d_τ$) using an 833~fb$^{-1}$ data sample collected near the $Υ(4S)$ resonance, with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. Using an optimal observable method, we obtain the real and imaginary parts of $d_τ$ as ${\rm Re}(d_τ) = ( -0.62 \pm 0.63 ) \times 10^{-17} ~e{\rm cm}$ and ${\rm Im}(d_τ) = ( -0.40 \pm 0.32 ) \times 10^{-17} ~e{\rm cm}$, respectively. These results are consistent with null electric dipole moment at the present level of experimental sensitivity and improve the sensitivity by about a factor of three.

First decay-time-dependent analysis of $B^{0} \to K_{S}^{0} π^{0}$ at Belle II

We report measurements of the branching fraction ($\mathcal{B}$) and direct $CP$-violating asymmetry ($A_{CP}$) of the charmless decay $B^{0} \to K^0 π^0$ at Belle II. A sample of $e^{+} e^{-}$ collisions, corresponding to $189.8 fb^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, recorded at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance is used for the first decay-time-dependent analysis of these decays within the experiment. We reconstruct about 135 signal candidates, and measure $\mathcal{B}(B^{0} \to K^{0} π^{0})= [11.0 \pm 1.2 (stat) \pm 1.0 (syst)] \times 10^{-6}$ and $A_{CP} (B^{0} \to K^{0} π^{0})= -0.41_{-0.32}^{+0.30} (stat) \pm 0.09 (syst)$.

Measurement of ${\mathcal B}$($B_s \rightarrow D_s X$) with $B_s$ Semileptonic Tagging

We report the first direct measurement of the inclusive branching fraction ${\mathcal B}(B_s \rightarrow D_s X)$ via $B_s$ tagging in $e^+e^-\toΥ$(5S) events. Tagging is accomplished through a partial reconstruction of semileptonic decays $B_s \rightarrow D_s X \ell ν$, where $X$ denotes unreconstructed additional hadrons or photons and $\ell$ is an electron or muon. With 121.4 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected at the $Υ$(5S) resonance by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider, we obtain ${\mathcal B}(B_s \rightarrow D_s X)$ = $(60.2 \pm 5.8 \pm 2.3)$\%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

Measurement of Branching Fraction and Longitudinal Polarization in $B^0 \to ρ^+ ρ^-$ Decays at Belle II

We present a measurement of the branching fraction and longitudinal polarization of $B^0 \to ρ^+ ρ^-$ decays. SuperKEKB electron-positron collision data corresponding to 189~fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity and containing $198 \times 10^6 B\bar{B}$ pairs collected with the Belle II detector are used. We obtain \begin{eqnarray*} \mathcal{B}(B^0\toρ^+ρ^-) &=& [2.67\pm0.28\,(\mathrm{stat})\,\pm0.28\,(\mathrm{syst})] \times 10^{-5}, \end{eqnarray*} \begin{eqnarray*} f_L &=& 0.956\pm0.035\,(\mathrm{stat})\,\pm 0.033\,(\mathrm{syst}), \end{eqnarray*} These results are consistent with previous measurements and can be used to constrain penguin pollution and to extract the quark-mixing angle $ϕ_2$.

Measurement of the branching fraction and $CP$ asymmetry for $B\to\bar{D}^{0} π$ decays

We measure the branching fractions and $CP$ asymmetries for the decays $B^{0}\to \bar{D}^{0}π^{0}$ and $B^{+}\to \bar{D}^{0}π^{+}$, using a data sample of $772\times 10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. The branching fractions obtained and direct $CP$ asymmetries are $\mathcal{B}(B^{0}\to \bar{D}^{0}π^{0}) = [2.70 \pm 0.06~ \text{(stat.)} \pm 0.10~ \text{(syst.)}] \times 10^{-4}$, $\mathcal{B}(B^{+}\to \bar{D}^{0}π^{+}) = [4.53 \pm 0.02~ \text{(stat.)} \pm 0.15~ \text{(syst.)}] \times 10^{-3}$, $ {\cal A}_{CP}(B^{0}\to \bar{D}^{0}π^{0}) = [+0.42 \pm 2.05~ \text{(stat.)} \pm 1.22~ \text{(syst.)}]\%$, and $ {\cal A}_{CP}(B^{+}\to \bar{D}^{0}π^{+}) = [+0.19 \pm 0.36~ \text{(stat.)} \pm 0.57~ \text{(syst.)}]\%$. The measurements of $\mathcal{B}$ are the most precise to date and are in good agreement with previous results, as is the measurement of ${\cal A}_{CP}(B^{+}\to \bar{D}^{0}π^{+})$. The measurement of ${\cal A}_{CP}$ for $B^{0}\to \bar{D}^{0}π^{0}$ is the first for this mode, and the value is consistent with Standard Model expectations.

Measurement of the branching fraction of the $B^0 \to K_S^0 π^0 γ$ decay using 190 fb$^{-1}$ of Belle II data

We report the measurement of the branching fraction of the $B^0 \to K_S^0 π^0 γ$ decay in $e^+ e^- \to Υ(4S) \to B \overline{B}$ data recorded by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy collider and corresponding to 190 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. The signal yield is measured to be $121\pm 29\,\hbox{(stat.)}$, leading to the branching fraction ${\cal B}\left(B^0 \to K_S^0 π^0 γ\right) = \left(7.3 \pm 1.8\,\hbox{(stat.)} \pm 1.0\,\hbox{(syst.)} \right)\times 10^{-6}$, which agrees with the known value.

Measurement of the branching fractions of the $B^+ \to η\ell^+ ν_{\ell} $ and $B^+ \to η^{\prime} \ell^+ ν_{\ell} $ decays with signal-side only reconstruction in the full $q^2$ range

The branching fractions of the decays $B^{+} \to η\ell^{+} ν_{\ell}$ and $B^{+} \to η^{\prime} \ell^{+} ν_{\ell}$ are measured, where $\ell$ is either an electron or a muon, using a data sample of $711\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ containing $772 \times 10^6 B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. To reduce the dependence of the result on the form factor model, the measurement is performed over the entire $q^2$ range. The resulting branching fractions are ${\cal B}(B^{+} \rightarrow η\ell^{+} ν_{\ell}) = (2.83 \pm 0.55_{\rm (stat.)} \pm 0.34_{\rm (syst.)}) \times 10^{-5}$ and ${\cal B}(B^{+} \rightarrow η' \ell^{+} ν_{\ell}) = (2.79 \pm 1.29_{\rm (stat.)} \pm 0.30_{\rm (syst.)}) \times 10^{-5}$.

Measurement of the cluster position resolution of the Belle II Silicon Vertex Detector

The Silicon Vertex Detector (SVD), with its four double-sided silicon strip sensor layers, is one of the two vertex sub-detectors of Belle II operating at SuperKEKB collider (KEK, Japan). Since 2019 and the start of the data taking, the SVD has demonstrated a reliable and highly efficient operation, even running in an environment with harsh beam backgrounds that are induced by the world's highest instantaneous luminosity. In order to provide the best quality track reconstruction with an efficient pattern recognition and track fit, and to correctly propagate the uncertainty on the hit's position to the track parameters, it is crucial to precisely estimate the resolution of the cluster position measurement. Several methods for estimating the position resolution directly from the data will be discussed.

Search for $Z^{'} \rightarrow μ^{+} μ^{-}$ in the $L_μ{-} L_τ$ gauge-symmetric model at Belle

We search for a new gauge boson $Z'$ that couples only to heavy leptons and their corresponding neutrinos in the process $e^{+} e^{-} \rightarrow Z'(\rightarrow μ^{+}μ^{-}) μ^{+}μ^{-}$, using a 643 fb$^{-1}$ data sample collected by the Belle experiment at or near the $Υ(1S,2S,3S,4S,5S)$ resonances at the KEKB collider. For the first time, effects due to initial state radiation are used in estimating the detection efficiency. No signal is observed in the mass range of 0.212 \ -- 10 GeV/${\it c}^2$ and we set an upper limit on the coupling strengh, $g'$, constraining $Z'$ as a possible contributor to the anomalous magnetic dipole moment of muon.

Search for charged lepton flavor violating decays of $Υ(1S)$

We present a search for the charged lepton-flavor-violating decays $Υ(1S)\rightarrow\ell\ell^\prime$ and radiative charged lepton-flavour-violating decays $Υ(1S)\rightarrowγ\ell\ell^\prime$ [$\ell,\ell^\prime = e, μ, τ$] using the 158 million $Υ(2S)$ sample collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB collider. This search uses $Υ(1S)$ mesons produced in $π^+π^-Υ(1S)$ transitions. We do not find any significant signal, so we provide upper limits on the branching fractions at the 90% confidence level.

Systematic study of nuclear effects in $p$$+$Al, $p$$+$Au, $d$$+$Au, and $^{3}$He$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV using $π^0$ production

The PHENIX collaboration presents a systematic study of $π^0$ production from $p$$+$$p$, $p$$+$Al, $p$$+$Au, $d$$+$Au, and $^{3}$He$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. Measurements were performed with different centrality selections as well as the total inelastic, 0%--100%, selection for all collision systems. For 0%--100% collisions, the nuclear modification factors, $R_{xA}$, are consistent with unity for $p_T$ above 8 GeV/$c$, but exhibit an enhancement in peripheral collisions and a suppression in central collisions. The enhancement and suppression characteristics are similar for all systems for the same centrality class. It is shown that for high-$p_T$-$π^0$ production, the nucleons in the $d$ and $^3$He interact mostly independently with the Au nucleus and that the counter intuitive centrality dependence is likely due to a physical correlation between multiplicity and the presence of a hard scattering process. These observations disfavor models where parton energy loss has a significant contribution to nuclear modifications in small systems. Nuclear modifications at lower $p_T$ resemble the Cronin effect -- an increase followed by a peak in central or inelastic collisions and a plateau in peripheral collisions. The peak height has a characteristic ordering by system size as $p$$+$Au $>$ $d$$+$Au $>$ $^{3}$He$+$Au $>$ $p$$+$Al. For collisions with Au ions, current calculations based on initial state cold nuclear matter effects result in the opposite order, suggesting the presence of other contributions to nuclear modifications, in particular at lower $p_T$.

The Silicon Vertex Detector of the Belle II Experiment

In 2019 the Belle II experiment started data taking at the asymmetric SuperKEKB collider (KEK, Japan) operating at the Y(4S) resonance. Belle II will search for new physics beyond the Standard Model by collecting an integrated luminosity of 50~ab$^{-1}$. The silicon vertex detector (SVD), consisting of four layers of double-sided silicon strip sensors, is one of the two vertex sub-detectors. The SVD extrapolates the tracks to the inner pixel detector (PXD) with enough precision to correctly identify hits in the PXD belonging to the track. In addition the SVD has standalone tracking capability and utilizes ionization to enhance particle identification in the low momentum region. The SVD is operating reliably and with high efficiency, despite exposure to the harsh beam background of the highest peak-luminosity collider ever built. High signal-to-noise ratio and hit efficiency have been measured, as well as the spatial resolution; all these quantities show excellent stability over time. Data-simulation agreement on cluster properties has recently been improved through a careful tuning of the simulation. The precise hit-time resolution can be exploited to reject out-of-time hits induced by beam background, which will make the SVD more robust against higher levels of background. During the first three years of running, radiation damage effects on strip noise, sensor currents and depletion voltage have been observed, as well as some coupling capacitor failure due to intense radiation bursts. None of these effects cause significant degradation in the detector performance.

The study of $γγ\toγψ(2S)$ at Belle

Using $980~\rm fb^{-1}$ of data on and around the $Υ(nS)(n=1,2,3,4,5)$ resonances collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider, the two-photon process $γγ\to γψ(2S)$ is studied from the threshold to $4.2~{\rm GeV}$ for the first time. Two structures are seen in the invariant mass distribution of $γψ(2S)$: one at $M_{R_1} = 3922.4\pm 6.5 \pm 2.0~{\rm MeV}/c^2$ with a width of $Γ_{R_1} = 22\pm 17\pm 4~{\rm MeV}$, and another at $M_{R_2} = 4014.3\pm 4.0 \pm 1.5~{\rm MeV}/c^2$ with a width of $Γ_{R_2} = 4\pm 11 \pm 6~{\rm MeV}$; the signals are parametrized with the incoherent sum of two Breit-Wigner functions. The first structure is consistent with the $X(3915)$ or the $χ_{c2}(3930)$, and the local statistical significance is determined to be $3.1σ$ with the systematic uncertainties included. The second matches none of the known charmonium or charmoniumlike states, and its global significance is determined to be $2.8σ$ including the look-elsewhere effect. The production rates are $Γ_{γγ}{\cal B}(R_1\toγψ(2S)) = 9.8\pm 3.6\pm 1.2~{\rm eV}$ assuming $(J^{PC}, |λ|) =(0^{++}, 0)$ or $2.0\pm 0.7\pm 0.2~{\rm eV}$ with $(2^{++}, 2)$ for the first structure and $Γ_{γγ}{\cal B}(R_2\toγψ(2S)) = 6.2\pm 2.2\pm 0.8~{\rm eV}$ with $(0^{++}, 0)$ or $1.2\pm 0.4\pm 0.2~{\rm eV}$ with $(2^{++}, 2)$ for the second one. Here, the first errors are statistical and the second systematic, and $λ$ is the helicity.

$τ$ lepton mass measurement at Belle II

The reconstruction of tau-pair production, $e^{+}e^{-} \to τ^{+}τ^{-}$, from the subsequent 3-prong ($τ^{+} \rightarrow π^{+} π^{-} π^{+} \barν_τ$) and 1-prong ($τ^{-} \to \ell^{-} \barν_{\ell} ν_τ$, $τ^{-} \to h^{-} ν_τ$ or $τ^{-} \to π^{-} π^0 ν_τ$) decays, is presented using 8.8 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^{+}e^{-}$ collision data of Belle II at the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = m_{Υ(4S)}$. The pseudomass technique developed by the ARGUS experiment is used to measure the $τ$-lepton mass $m_τ$ in the 3-prong $τ^{+} \to π^{+} π^{-} π^{+} \barν_τ $ decay, resulting in $m_τ = 1777.28 \pm 0.75~{\rm (stat.)} \pm 0.33 ~{\rm (sys.)}~{\rm{MeV}/\rm{c}^2}$.

Search for lepton-number- and baryon-number-violating tau decays at Belle

We search for lepton-number- and baryon-number-violating decays $τ^{-}\to\overline{p}e^{+}e^{-}$, $pe^{-}e^{-}$, $\overline{p}e^{+}μ^{-}$, $\overline{p}e^{-}μ^{+}$, $\overline{p}μ^{+}μ^{-}$, and $pμ^{-}μ^{-}$ using 921 fb$^{-1}$ of data, equivalent to $(841\pm12)\times 10^6$ $τ^{+}τ^{-}$ events, recorded with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. In the absence of a signal, $90\%$ confidence-level upper limits are set on the branching fractions of these decays in the range $(1.8$-$4.0)\times 10^{-8}$. We set the world's first limits on the first four channels and improve the existing limits by an order of magnitude for the last two channels.

A calibration of the Belle II hadronic tag-side reconstruction algorithm with $B \rightarrow X\ell ν$ decays

Tag-side reconstruction is an important method for reconstructing $B$ meson decays with missing energy. The Belle II tag-side reconstruction algorithm, Full Event Interpretation, relies on a hierarchical reconstruction of $B$ meson decays with multivariate classification employed at each stage of reconstruction. Given the large numbers of classifiers employed and decay chains reconstructed, the performance of the algorithm on data and simulation differs significantly. Here, calibration factors are derived for hadronic tag-side $B$ decays by measuring a signal side decay, $B \rightarrow X\ell ν$, in $34.6$ fb$^{-1}$ of Belle II data. For a very loose selection on the tag-side $B$ multivariate classifier, the calibration factors are $0.65 \pm 0.02$ and $0.83 \pm 0.03$ for tag-side $B^{+}$ and $B^{0}$ mesons, respectively.

Charmless $B$ decay reconstruction in 2019 Belle II data

We report on the reconstruction of various charmless $B$ decays from electron-positron collisions at the energy corresponding to the $Υ(4S)$ resonance collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider. We use simulation to devise optimized event selections and apply them to the full data set collected in 2019, corresponding to 8.7\,fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. We fit the difference between half of the collision energy and the $B$ candidate energy (in the $Υ(4S)$ frame) for events restricted to a signal-rich range in beam-energy-constrained mass to search for charmless signals. Signal yields of approximately 80, 15, 20, 30, 90, and 160 decays are reconstructed for the channels $B^0 \to K^+π^-$, $B^0 \to π^+π^-$, $B^+ \to K^0_S(\to π^+π^-)π^+$, $B^+ \to K^+π^0(\to γγ)$, $B^+ \to K^+K^-K^+$, and $B^+ \to K^+π^-π^+$, respectively. Yields and background contaminations are compatible with those expected from simulation and comparable with those obtained by the Belle experiment. The results show a good understanding of the detector performance and offer a reliable basis to assess projections for future reach.

First flavor tagging calibration using 2019 Belle II data

We report on the first calibration of the standard Belle II $B$-flavor tagger using the full data set collected at the $Υ(4{\rm S})$ resonance in 2019 with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider, corresponding to 8.7 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. The calibration is performed by reconstructing various hadronic charmed $B$-meson decays with flavor-specific final states. We use simulation to optimize our event selection criteria and to train the flavor tagging algorithm. We determine the tagging efficiency and the fraction of wrongly identified tag-side $B$~candidates from a measurement of the time-integrated $B^0-\overline{B}^0$ mixing probability. The total effective efficiency is measured to be $\varepsilon_{\rm eff} = \big(33.8 \pm 3.6(\text{stat}) \pm 1.6(\text{sys})\big)\%$, which is in good agreement with the predictions from simulation and comparable with the best one obtained by the Belle experiment. The results show a good understanding of the detector performance and offer a basis for future calibrations.

First search for the $η_{c2}(1D)$ in $B$ decays at Belle

The first dedicated search for the $η_{c2}(1D)$ is carried out using the decays $B^+ \rightarrow η_{c2}(1D) K^+$, $B^0 \rightarrow η_{c2}(1D) K^0_S$, $B^0 \rightarrow η_{c2}(1D) π^- K^+$, and $B^+ \rightarrow η_{c2}(1D) π^+ K^0_S$ with $η_{c2}(1D) \to h_c γ$. No significant signal is found. Measurement of Hadronic Mass Moments $\langle M_X^n \rangle $ in $B \rightarrow X_c \ell ν$ Decays at Belle II

We present measurements of the first six hadronic mass moments in semileptonic $B \rightarrow X_c \ell ν$ decays. The hadronic mass moments, together with other observables of inclusive $B$ decays, can be used to determine the CKM matrix element $|{V_{cb}}|$ and mass of the $b$-quark $m_b$ in the context of Heavy Quark Expansions of QCD. The Belle~II data recorded at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance in 2019 and 2020 (March-July), corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $34.6\;\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$, is used for this measurement. The decay $Υ(4S) \rightarrow B \overline{B}$ is reconstructed by applying the hadronic tagging algorithm provided by the Full Event Interpretation to fully reconstruct one $B$ meson. The second $B$ meson is reconstructed inclusively by selecting a high-momentum lepton. The $X_c$ system is identified by the remaining reconstructed tracks and clusters in the electromagnetic calorimeter. We report preliminary results for the hadronic mass moments $\langle M_X^n \rangle $ with $n=1,\dots,6$, measured as a function of a lower cut on the lepton momentum in the signal $B$ rest frame.

Measurement of the $B^0$ lifetime using fully reconstructed hadronic decays in the 2019 Belle II dataset

This document presents the measurement of $B^0$ meson lifetimes using the 2019 Belle II dataset that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $8.7 \pm 0.2$ fb$^{-1}$. Each candidate is fully reconstructed with hadronic decay final states on the signal side, while the rest-of-event technique allows to infer the decay vertex position on the other (tag) side. $B^0$ lifetime is extracted from an unbinned maximum likelihood fit to the distribution of the difference between the signal side $B^0$ candidate and the tag side decay times. The measured lifetime is $τ_{B^0} = 1.48 \pm 0.28 \pm 0.06 $ ps, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

Measurement of time-dependent CP violation parameters in $B^0 \to K_0^SK_0^SK_0^S$ decays at Belle

We measure the time-dependent $C\!P$ violation parameters in $B^{0} \to K^{0}_{S}K^{0}_{S}K^{0}_{S}$ decays using $772 \times 10^6$ $B {\mkern 1.5mu\overline{\mkern-1.5mu B \mkern-0.1mu}\mkern 0.1mu}$ pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. The obtained mixing-induced and direct $C\!P$ asymmetries are $-0.71 \pm 0.23~{\rm(stat)} \pm 0.05~{\rm(syst)}$ and $0.12 \pm 0.16~{\rm(stat)} \pm 0.05~{\rm(syst)}$, respectively. These values are consistent with the Standard Model predictions. The significance of $C\!P$ violation differs from zero by 2.5 standard deviations.

Measurement of two-particle correlations in hadronic $e^{+}e^{-}$ collisions at Belle

The enhancement of charged-particle pairs with large pseudorapidity difference and small azimuthal angle difference, often referred to as the ``ridge signal'', is a phenomenon widely observed in high multiplicity proton-proton, proton-ion and deutron-ion collisions, which is not yet fully understood. In heavy-ion collisions, the hydrodynamic expansion of the Quark-Gluon Plasma is one of the possible explanations of the origin of the ridge signal. Measurements in the $e^+e^-$ collision system, without the complexities introduced by hadron structure in the initial state, can serve as a complementary probe to examine the formation of a ridge signal. The first measurement of two-particle angular correlation functions in high multiplicity $e^+e^-$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=10.52$ GeV is reported. The hadronic $e^+e^-$ annihilation data collected by the Belle detector at KEKB are used in this study. Two-particle angular correlation functions are measured over the full azimuth and large pseudorapidity intervals which are defined by either the electron beam axis or the event thrust as a function of charged particle multiplicity. The measurement in the event thrust analysis, with mostly outgoing quark pairs determining the reference axis, is sensitive to the region of additional soft gluon emissions. No significant ridge signal is observed with either coordinates analyses. Near side jet correlations appear to be absent in the thrust axis analysis. The measurements are compared to predictions from various event generators and expected to provide new constraints to the phenomenological models in the low energy regime.

Measurements of branching fractions and CP-violating charge asymmetries in charmless $B$ decays reconstructed in 2019--2020 Belle~II data

We report on first measurements of branching fractions~($\mathcal{B}$) and CP-violating charge asymmetries~($\mathcal{A}$) in charmless $B$ decays at Belle~II. We use a sample of electron-positron collisions collected in 2019 and 2020 at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance and corresponding to $34.6$\,fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. We use simulation to determine optimized event selections. The $ΔE$ distributions of the resulting samples, restricted in $M_{\rm bc}$, are fit to determine signal yields. Signal yields are corrected for efficiencies determined from simulation and control data samples to obtain branching fractions and CP-violating asymmetries for flavour-specific channels. These are the first measurements in charmless decays reported by Belle~II. Results are compatible with known determinations and show detector performance comparable with the best Belle results offering a reliable basis to assess projections for future reach.

Rediscovery of $B \to ϕK^{(*)}$ decays and measurement of the longitudinal polarization fraction $f_L$ in $B \to ϕK^{*}$ decays using the Summer 2020 Belle II dataset

We utilize a sample of 34.6 fb$^{-1}$, collected by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric energy $e^+e^-$ collider, to search for the $B^+ \to ϕK^+$, $B^+ \to ϕK^{*+}$, $B^0 \to ϕK^0_S$, and $B^0 \to ϕK^{*0}$ decays. Charmless hadronic $B$ decays represent an important part of the Belle II physics program, and are an ideal benchmark to test the detector capabilities in terms of tracking efficiency, charged particle identification, vertexing, and advanced analysis techniques. Each channel is observed with a significance that exceeds 5 standard deviations, and we obtain measurements of their branching ratios that are in good agreement with the world averages. For the $B \to ϕK^*$ modes, we also perform a measurement of the longitudinal polarization fraction $f_L$.

Search for an invisibly decaying $Z^{\prime}$ boson at Belle II in $e^+ e^- \to μ^+ μ^- (e^{\pm} μ^{\mp})$ plus missing energy final states

Theories beyond the standard model often predict the existence of an additional neutral boson, the $Z^{\prime}$. Using data collected by the Belle II experiment during 2018 at the SuperKEKB collider, we perform the first searches for the invisible decay of a $Z^{\prime}$ in the process $e^+ e^- \to μ^+ μ^- Z^{\prime}$ and of a lepton-flavor-violating $Z^{\prime}$ in $e^+ e^- \to e^{\pm} μ^{\mp} Z^{\prime}$. We do not find any excess of events and set 90\% credibility level upper limits on the cross sections of these processes. We translate the former, in the framework of an $L_μ-L_τ$ theory, into upper limits on the $Z^{\prime}$ coupling constant at the level of $5 \times 10^{-2}$ -- $1$ $M_{Z^\prime}\leq 6$ GeV/$c^2$.

Search for the Decay $B_s^0 \rightarrow η^\prime η$

In the Standard Model (SM) charmless hadronic decays $B_s^0 \rightarrow η^\prime η$ proceed via tree-level $b\to u$ and penguin $b\to s$ transitions. Penguin transitions are sensitive to Beyond-the-Standard-Model (BSM) physics scenarios and could affect the branching fractions and {\it CP} asymmetries in such decays. Once branching fractions for two-body decays $B_s \to ηη, ηη^{\prime}, η^{\prime}η^{\prime} $ are measured, and the theoretical uncertainties are reduced, it would be possible to extract {\it CP} violating parameters from the data using the formalism based on SU(3)/U(3) symmetry. To achieve this goal, at least four of these six branching fractions need to be measured. Only the branching fraction for $B_s^0 \to η^{\prime}η^{\prime}$ has been measured so far.

Studies of the semileptonic $\bar B^0\to D^{*+}\ell^-\barν_\ell$ and $B^-\to D^{0}\ell^-\barν_\ell$ decay processes with 34.6 fb$^{-1}$ of Belle II data

We report measurements of the $\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} \ell^{-} \barν_l$ and $B^- \to D^{0} \ell^{-} \barν_l$ processes using 34.6 fb$^{-1}$ of collision events recorded by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. For the $B^-\to D^{0}\ell^-\barν_\ell$ channel, we present first studies that isolate this decay from other semileptonic processes and backgrounds. We report a measurement of the $\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} \ell^{-} \barν_l$ branching fraction and obtain ${\cal B}(\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} \ell^{-} \barν_l) = \left(4.60 \pm 0.05_{\mathrm{stat}}\pm0.17_{\mathrm{syst}} \pm 0.45_{π_s}\right) \%$, in agreement with the world average. Here, the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and related to slow pion reconstruction, respectively. The systematic uncertainties are limited by the statistics of auxiliary measurements and will improve in the future. We also report differential branching fractions in five bins of the hadronic recoil parameter $w$ for $\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} \ell^{-} \barν_l$, unfolded to account for resolution and efficiency effects.

Measurement of $\mathcal{R}(D)$ and $\mathcal{R}(D^*)$ with a semileptonic tagging method

The experimental results on the ratios of branching fractions $\mathcal{R}(D) = {\cal B}(\bar{B} \to D τ^- \barν_τ)/{\cal B}(\bar{B} \to D \ell^- \barν_{\ell})$ and $\mathcal{R}(D^*) = {\cal B}(\bar{B} \to D^* τ^- \barν_τ)/{\cal B}(\bar{B} \to D^* \ell^- \barν_{\ell})$, where $\ell$ denotes an electron or a muon, show a long-standing discrepancy with the Standard Model predictions, and might hint to a violation of lepton flavor universality. We report a new simultaneous measurement of $\mathcal{R}(D)$ and $\mathcal{R}(D^*)$, based on a data sample containing $772 \times 10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ events recorded at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+ e^-$ collider. In this analysis the tag-side $B$ meson is reconstructed in a semileptonic decay mode and the signal-side $τ$ is reconstructed in a purely leptonic decay. The measured values are $\mathcal{R}(D)= 0.307 \pm 0.037 \pm 0.016$ and $\mathcal{R}(D^*) = 0.283 \pm 0.018 \pm 0.014$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions within $0.2$, $1.1$ and $0.8$ standard deviations for $\mathcal{R}(D)$, $\mathcal{R}(D^*)$ and their combination, respectively. This work constitutes the most precise measurements of $\mathcal{R}(D)$ and $\mathcal{R}(D^*)$ performed to date as well as the first result for $\mathcal{R}(D)$ based on a semileptonic tagging method.

This is the first data sample of the Belle~II experiment. Using Bhabha and digamma events, we measure the integrated luminosity of the data sample to be ($496.3 \pm 0.3 \pm 3.0$)~pb$^{-1}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. Using the data sample of 711 fb$^{-1}$ of $Υ(4S)$ on-resonance data taken by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy electron-positron collider, we present the first measurements of branching fractions of the decays $B^{-} \to \barΛ_{c}^{-} Ξ_{c}^{'0}$, $B^{-} \to \barΛ_{c}^{-} Ξ_{c}(2645)^{0}$, and $B^{-} \to \barΛ_{c}^{-} Ξ_{c}(2790)^{0} $. Observation of the radiative decays of $Υ(1S)$ to $χ_{c1}$

We report the first observation of the radiative decay of the $Υ(1S)$ into a charmonium state. The statistical significance of the observed signal of $Υ(1S) \to γχ_{c1}$ is 6.3 standard deviations including systematics. The branching fraction is calculated to be Br($Υ(1S) \to γχ_{c1}$) = (4.7^{+2.4}_{-1.8} (stat) ^{+0.4}_{-0.5} (sys)) * 10^{-5}. We also searched for $Υ(1S)$ radiative decays into $χ_{c0,2}$ and $η_c(1S,2S)$ and set upper limits on their branching fractions. Optical Conductivity Study of $f$ Electron States in YbCu$_2$Ge$_2$ at High Pressures to 20 GPa

Optical conductivity [$σ(ω)$] of YbCu$_2$Ge$_2$ has been measured at external pressures ($P$) to 20 GPa, to study the $P$ evolution of $f$ electron hybridized states. At $P$=0, $σ(ω)$ shows a marked mid-infrared (mIR) peak at 0.37 eV, which is due to optical excitations from $f^{14}$ (Yb$^{2+}$) state located below the Fermi level. With increasing $P$, the mIR peak shows significant shifts to lower energy, reaching 0.18 eV at $P$=20 GPa. This result indicates that the $f^{14}$ energy level increases toward the Fermi level with $P$. Such a shift of the $f$ electron level with $P$ has been expected from theoretical considerations, but had never been demonstrated by spectroscopic experiment under high $P$. The obtained results are also analyzed in terms of the $P$ evolution of the conduction-$f$ electron hybridization.

Search for $B^+ \to μ^+\, ν_μ$ and $B^+ \to μ^+\, N$ with inclusive tagging

We report the result for a search for the leptonic decay of $B^+ \to μ^+ \, ν_μ$ using the full Belle data set of 711 fb${}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance. In the Standard Model leptonic $B$-meson decays are helicity and CKM suppressed. To maximize sensitivity an inclusive tagging approach is used to reconstruct the second $B$ meson produced in the collision. The directional information from this second $B$ meson is used to boost the observed $μ$ into the signal $B$ meson rest-frame, in which the $μ$ has a monochromatic momentum spectrum. Though its momentum is smeared by the experimental resolution, this technique improves the analysis sensitivity considerably. Analyzing the $μ$ momentum spectrum in this frame we find $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to μ^+ \, ν_μ) = \left( 5.3 \pm 2.0 \pm 0.9 \right) \times 10^{-7}$ with a one-sided significance of 2.8 standard deviations over the background-only hypothesis. This translates to a frequentist upper limit of $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to μ^+ \, ν_μ) < 8.6 \times 10^{-7}$ at 90% CL. The experimental spectrum is then used to search for a massive sterile neutrino, $B^+ \to μ^+ \, N$, but no evidence is observed for a sterile neutrino with a mass in a range of 0 - 1.5 GeV. The determined $B^+ \to μ^+ \, ν_μ$ branching fraction limit is further used to constrain the mass and coupling space of the type II and type III two-Higgs-doublet models.

The relative fraction of these states is loosely constrained by the current data: the hypothesis that only $Z_b(10610)$ is produced is excluded at the level of 3.3 standard deviations, while the hypothesis that only $Z_b(10650)$ is produced is not excluded at a significant level.

Measurement of higher cumulants of net-charge multiplicity distributions in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=7.7-200$ GeV

We report the measurement of cumulants ($C_n, n=1\ldots4$) of the net-charge distributions measured within pseudorapidity ($|η|<0.35$) in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=7.7-200$ GeV with the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The ratios of cumulants (e.g. $C_1/C_2$, $C_3/C_1$) of the net-charge distributions, which can be related to volume independent susceptibility ratios, are studied as a function of centrality and energy. These quantities are important to understand the quantum-chromodynamics phase diagram and possible existence of a critical end point. The measured values are very well described by expectation from negative binomial distributions. We do not observe any nonmonotonic behavior in the ratios of the cumulants as a function of collision energy. The measured values of $C_1/C_2 = μ/σ^2$ and $C_3/C_1 = Sσ^3/μ$ can be directly compared to lattice quantum-chromodynamics calculations and thus allow extraction of both the chemical freeze-out temperature and the baryon chemical potential at each center-of-mass energy.

We select a sample of $B^0 \bar{B}^0$ pairs by reconstructing both $B$ mesons in semileptonic decays to $D^{*\mp} \ell^{\pm}$. We measure ${\cal R}(D^*)= 0.302 \pm 0.030({\rm stat)} \pm 0.011({\rm syst)}$, which is within $1.6 σ$ of the Standard Model theoretical expectation, where the standard deviation $σ$ includes systematic uncertainties. We use this measurement to constrain several scenarios of new physics in a model-independent approach.

Observation of Transverse $Λ/\barΛ$ Hyperon Polarization in $e^+e^-$ Annihilation at Belle

We report the first observation of the polarization of $Λ/\barΛ$ hyperons transverse to its production plane in $e^+e^-$ annihilation. We observe a significant polarization that rises with the fractional energy carried by the hyperon as well as its transverse momentum. To define the production plane, we use the direction of the hyperon momentum together with either the thrust axis in the event or the momentum vector of a hadron in the opposite hemisphere. Furthermore, we investigate the contributions to the hyperon polarization from the feed-down from $Σ^0/\barΣ^0$ and $Λ_c^{\pm}$ decays. This measurement uses a dataset of 800.4fb$^{-1}$ collected by the Belle experiment at or near a center-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV.

We report results on the studies of the $e^+e^-\to B_s^{(*)}\bar{B}_s^{(*)}$ processes. The results are based on a $121.4$ fb$^{-1}$ data sample collected with the Belle detector at the center-of-mass energy near the $Υ(10860)$ peak and $16.4$ fb$^{-1}$ of data collected at 19 energy points in the range from 10.77 to 11.02 GeV. We observe a clear $e^+e^-\toΥ(10860)\to B_s^{(*)}\bar{B}_s^{(*)}$ signal, with no statistically significant signal of $e^+e^-\to Υ(11020)\to B_s^{(*)}\bar{B}_s^{(*)}$. The relative production ratio of $B_s^*\bar{B}_s^*$, $B_s\bar{B}_s^{*}$, and $B_s\bar{B}_s$ final states at $\sqrt{s}=10.866$ GeV is measured to be $7:$ $0.856\pm0.106(stat.)\pm0.053(syst.):$ $0.645\pm0.094(stat.)^{+0.030}_{-0.033}(syst.)$. Study of χ_{bJ}(1P) Properties in the Radiative Υ(2S) Decays

We report a study of radiative decays of χ_{bJ}(1P)(J=0,1,2) mesons into 74 hadronic final states comprising charged and neutral pions, kaons, protons; out of these, 41 modes are observed with at least 5 standard deviation significance. Our measurements not only improve the previous measurements by the CLEO Collaboration but also lead to first observations in many new modes. The large sample allows us to probe the total decay width of the χ_{b0}(1P). In the absence of a statistically significant result, a 90% confidence-level upper limit is set on the width at Γ_{total}< 2.4 MeV. Our results are based on 24.7 fb^{-1} of e+e- collision data recorded by the Belle detector at the Υ(2S) resonance, corresponding to (157.8\pm3.6)\times10^6 Υ(2S) decays.

Transverse energy production and charged-particle multiplicity at midrapidity in various systems from $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=7.7$ to 200 GeV

Measurements of midrapidity charged particle multiplicity distributions, $dN_{\rm ch}/dη$, and midrapidity transverse-energy distributions, $dE_T/dη$, are presented for a variety of collision systems and energies. Included are distributions for Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$, 130, 62.4, 39, 27, 19.6, 14.5, and 7.7 GeV, Cu$+$Cu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ and 62.4 GeV, Cu$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV, U$+$U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=193$ GeV, $d$$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV, $^{3}$He$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV, and $p$$+$$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. Centrality-dependent distributions at midrapidity are presented in terms of the number of nucleon participants, $N_{\rm part}$, and the number of constituent quark participants, $N_{q{\rm p}}$. For all $A$$+$$A$ collisions down to $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=7.7$ GeV, it is observed that the midrapidity data are better described by scaling with $N_{q{\rm p}}$ than scaling with $N_{\rm part}$. Also presented are estimates of the Bjorken energy density, $\varepsilon_{\rm BJ}$, and the ratio of $dE_T/dη$ to $dN_{\rm ch}/dη$, the latter of which is seen to be constant as a function of centrality for all systems.

First Observation of CP Violation in B0->D(*)CP h0 Decays by a Combined Time-Dependent Analysis of BaBar and Belle Data

We report a measurement of the time-dependent CP asymmetry of B0->D(*)CP h0 decays, where the light neutral hadron h0 is a pi0, eta or omega meson, and the neutral D meson is reconstructed in the CP eigenstates K+ K-, K0S pi0 or K0S omega. The measurement is performed combining the final data samples collected at the Y(4S) resonance by the BaBar and Belle experiments at the asymmetric-energy B factories PEP-II at SLAC and KEKB at KEK, respectively. The data samples contain ( 471 +/- 3 ) x 10^6 BB pairs recorded by the BaBar detector and ( 772 +/- 11 ) x 10^6, BB pairs recorded by the Belle detector. We measure the CP asymmetry parameters -eta_f S = +0.66 +/- 0.10 (stat.) +/- 0.06 (syst.) and C = -0.02 +/- 0.07 (stat.) +/- 0.03 (syst.). These results correspond to the first observation of CP violation in B0->D(*)CP h0 decays. The hypothesis of no mixing-induced CP violation is excluded in these decays at the level of 5.4 standard deviations.

Measurement of Azimuthal Modulations in the Cross-Section of Di-Pion Pairs in Di-Jet Production from Electron-Positron Annihilation

We present an extraction of azimuthal correlations between two pairs of charged pions detected in opposite jets from electron-positron annihilation. These correlations may arise from the dependence of the di-pion fragmentation on the polarization of the parent quark in the process $e^+e^- \rightarrow q \bar{q}$. Due to the correlation of the quark polarizations, the cross-section of di-pion pair production, in which the pion pairs are detected in opposite jets in a dijet event, exhibits a modulation in the azimuthal angles of the planes containing the hadron pairs with respect to the production plane. The measurement of this modulation allows access to combinations of fragmentation functions that are sensitive to the quark's transverse polarization and helicity. Within our uncertainties we do not observe a significant signal from the previously unmeasured helicity dependent fragmentation function $G_1^\perp$. This measurement uses a dataset of 938~fb$^{-1}$ collected by the Belle experiment at or near $\sqrt{s}\approx10.58$ GeV.

Measurement of the amplitude ratio of $B^0 \to D^0K^{*0}$ and $B^0 \to \bar{D^0}K^{*0}$ decays with a model-independent Dalitz plot analysis using $D\to K_S^0π^+π^-$ decays

We report a measurement of the amplitude ratio $r_S$ of $B^0 \to D^0K^{*0}$ and $B^0 \to \bar{D^0}K^{*0}$ decays with a model-independent Dalitz plot analysis using $D\to K_S^0π^+π^-$ decays. Using the full data sample of $772\times10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at KEKB accelerator the upper limit is $r_S < 0.87$ at the 68 % confidence level. This result is the first measurement of $r_S$ with a model-independent Dalitz analysis, and is consistent with results from other analyses. The value of $r_S$ indicates the sensitivity of the decay to $ϕ_3$ because the statistical uncertainty is proportional to $1/r_S$. The $r_S$ result is obtained from observables ($x_\pm$, $y_\pm$) \begin{eqnarray} x_- &=& +0.4 ^{+1.0 +0.0}_{-0.6 -0.1} \pm0.0 \\ y_- &=& -0.6 ^{+0.8 +0.1}_{-1.0 -0.0} \pm0.1 \\ x_+ &=& +0.1 ^{+0.7 +0.0}_{-0.4 -0.1} \pm0.1 \\ y_+ &=& +0.3 ^{+0.5 +0.0}_{-0.8 -0.1} \pm0.1 \\ , \end{eqnarray} where $x_\pm = r_S \cos(δ_S \pm ϕ_3)$, $y_\pm = r_S \sin(δ_S \pm ϕ_3)$ and $ϕ_3 (δ_S)$ are the weak (strong) phase difference between $B^0 \to D^0K^{*0}$ and $B^0 \to \bar{D^0}K^{*0}$. The first uncertainty is statistical, the second is the experimental systematic and the third is the systematic due to the uncertainties on $c_i$ and $s_i$ parameters measured by CLEO.

Search for dark photons from neutral meson decays in $p$$+$$p$ and $d$$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=200 GeV

The standard model (SM) of particle physics is spectacularly successful, yet the measured value of the muon anomalous magnetic moment $(g-2)_μ$ deviates from SM calculations by 3.6$σ$. Several theoretical models attribute this to the existence of a "dark photon," an additional U(1) gauge boson, which is weakly coupled to ordinary photons. The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has searched for a dark photon, $U$, in $π^0,η\rightarrow γe^+e^-$ decays and obtained upper limits of $\mathcal{O}(2\times10^{-6})$ on $U$-$γ$ mixing at 90% CL for the mass range $30<m_U<90$ MeV/$c^2$. Combined with other experimental limits, the remaining region in the $U$-$γ$ mixing parameter space that can explain the $(g-2)_μ$ deviation from its SM value is nearly completely excluded at the 90% confidence level, with only a small region of $29<m_U<32$ MeV/$c^2$ remaining.

Colossal thermomagnetic response in the exotic superconductor URu2Si2

When a superconductor is heated above its critical temperature $T_c$, macroscopic coherence vanishes, leaving behind droplets of thermally fluctuating Cooper pair. This superconducting fluctuation effect above $T_c$ has been investigated for many decades and its influence on the transport, thermoelectric and thermodynamic quantities in most superconductors is well understood by the standard Gaussian fluctuation theories. The transverse thermoelectric (Nernst) effect is particularly sensitive to the fluctuations, and the large Nernst signal found in the pseudogap regime of the underdoped high-$T_c$ cuprates has raised much debate on its connection to the origin of superconductivity. Here we report on the observation of a colossal Nernst signal due to the superconducting fluctuations in the heavy-fermion superconductor URu$_2$Si$_2$. The Nernst coefficient is enhanced by as large as one million times over the theoretically expected value within the standard framework of superconducting fluctuations. This, for the first time in any known material, results in a sizeable thermomagnetic figure of merit approaching unity. Moreover, contrary to the conventional wisdom, the enhancement in the Nernst signal is more significant with the reduction of the impurity scattering rate. This anomalous Nernst effect intimately reflects the highly unusual superconducting state embedded in the so-called hidden-order phase of URu$_2$Si$_2$. The results invoke possible chiral or Berry-phase fluctuations originated from the topological aspect of this superconductor, which are associated with the effective magnetic field intrinsically induced by broken time-reversal symmetry of the superconducting order parameter.

Direct observation of lattice symmetry breaking at the hidden-order transition in URu2Si2

Since the 1985 discovery of the phase transition at $T_{\rm HO}=17.5$ K in the heavy-fermion metal URu$_2$Si$_2$, neither symmetry change in the crystal structure nor magnetic ordering have been observed, which makes this "hidden order" enigmatic. Some high-field experiments have suggested electronic nematicity which breaks fourfold rotational symmetry, but direct evidence has been lacking for its ground state at zero magnetic field. Here we report on the observation of lattice symmetry breaking from the fourfold tetragonal to twofold orthorhombic structure by high-resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements at zero field, which pins down the space symmetry of the order. Small orthorhombic symmetry-breaking distortion sets in at $T_{\rm HO}$ with a jump, uncovering the weakly first-order nature of the hidden-order transition. This distortion is observed only in ultrapure sample, implying a highly unusual coupling nature between the electronic nematicity and underlying lattice.

We reconstruct the accompanying $B$ meson in a semileptonic decay and detect the $B^+ \to τ^+ ν_τ$ candidate in the recoiling event. We perform a partial wave analysis to distinguish among scalar [$B^0 \to ϕ(Kπ)^{*}_{0}$], vector [$B^0 \to ϕK^{*}(892)^{0}$] and tensor [$B^0 \to ϕK^{*}_{2}(1430)^{0}$] components, and determine the corresponding branching fractions to be $\mathcal{B}[B^0 \to ϕ(Kπ)^{*}_{0}] = (4.3 \pm 0.4 \pm 0.4) \times 10^{-6}$, $\mathcal{B}[B^0 \to ϕK^{*}(892)^{0}] = (10.4 \pm 0.5 \pm 0.6) \times 10^{-6}$ and $\mathcal{B}[B^0 \to ϕK^{*}_{2}(1430)^{0}] = (5.5 ^{+0.9}_{-0.7} \pm 1.0) \times 10^{-6}$. We also measure the longitudinal polarization fraction $f_L$ in $B^0 \to ϕK^{*}(892)^{0}$ and $B^0 \to ϕK^{*}_{2}(1430)^{0}$ decays to be $0.499 \pm 0.030 \pm 0.018$ and $0.918 ^{+0.029}_{-0.060} \pm 0.012$, respectively. The first quoted uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. In total, we measure 26 parameters related to branching fractions, polarization and CP violation in the $B^0 \to ϕK^{*}$ system. No evidence for CP violation is found.

Cyclotron resonance study of quasiparticle mass and scattering rate in the hidden-order and superconducting phases of URu2Si2

The observation of cyclotron resonance in ultra-clean crystals of URu2Si2 [S. Tonegawa et al., PRL 109, 036401 (2012)] provides another route besides quantum oscillations to the determination of the bulk electronic structure in the hidden order phase. We report detailed analyses of the resonance lines, which fully resolve the cyclotron mass structure of the main Fermi surface sheets. A particular focus is given to the anomalous splitting of the sharpest resonance line near the [110] direction under in-plane magnetic-field rotation, which implies peculiar electronic structure in the hidden order phase. The results under the field rotation from [110] toward [001] direction reveal that the splitting is a robust feature against field tilting from the basal plane. This is in sharp contrast to the reported frequency branch alpha in the quantum oscillation experiments showing a three-fold splitting that disappears by a small field tilt, which can be explained by the magnetic breakdown between the large hole sphere and small electron pockets. Our analysis of the cyclotron resonance profiles reveals that the heavier branch of the split line has a larger scattering rate, providing evidence for the existence of hot-spot regions along the [110] direction. These results are consistent with the broken fourfold rotational symmetry in the hidden-order phase, which can modify the interband scattering in an asymmetric manner. We also extend our measurements down to 0.7 K, which results in the observation of cyclotron resonance in the superconducting state, where novel effects of vortex dynamics may enter. We find that the cyclotron mass undergoes no change in the superconducting state. In contrast, the quasiparticle scattering rate shows a rapid decrease below the vortex-lattice melting transition temperature, which supports the formation of quasiparticle Bloch state in the vortex lattice phase.

Precise measurement of the branching fractions for Bs->Ds(*)+ Ds(*)- and first measurement of the Ds*+ Ds*- polarization using e+e- collisions

We have made a precise measurement of the absolute branching fractions of Bs->Ds(*)+ Ds(*)- decays using 121.4 fb-1 of data recorded by the Belle experiment running on the Upsilon(5S) resonance. The results are B(Bs0->Ds+ Ds-) = (0.58 +0.11 -0.09 +-0.13)%, B(Bs0->Ds*+- Ds-+) = (1.8 +-0.2 +-0.4)%, and B(Bs0->Ds*+ Ds*-) = (2.0 +-0.3 +-0.5)%; the sum is B(Bs0->Ds(*)+ Ds(*)- = (4.3 +-0.4 +-1.0)%. Assuming Bs->Ds(*)+ Ds(*)- saturates decays to CP-even final states, the branching fraction constrains the ratio Delta(Gamma_s)/cos(phi_s), where Delta(Gamma_s) is the difference in widths between the two Bs0-Bs0bar mass eigenstates, and phi_s is the CP-violating phase in Bs0-Bs0bar mixing. For phi_s=0 we obtain Delta(Gamma_s)/Gamma_s = 0.090 +-0.009 (stat.) +-0.023 (syst.), where Gamma_s is the mean decay width. We also measure for the first time the longitudinal polarization fraction of Bs->Ds*+ Ds*-; the result is 0.12 +0.30 -0.28 +0.04 -0.05.

Quantum criticality and Lifshitz transition in the Ising system CeRu2Si2: Comparison with YbRh2Si2

New thermoelectric power (TEP) measurements on prototype heavy-fermion compounds close to magnetic quantum criticality are presented. The highly sensitive technique of TEP is an unique tool to reveal Fermi surface instabilities, referred here as Lifshitz transitions. The first focus is on the Ising CeRu2Si2 series. Doping CeRu2Si2 with Rh produces a decoupling between the first order metamagnetic transition and the pseudo-metamagnetism observed in the pure compound. Comparison is made with the case of YbRh2Si2 which is often considered as the archetype of local quantum criticality by contrast to CeRu2Si2, taken as an example of spin-density wave criticality. Up to now for ferromagnetic materials showing ferromagnetic wings, no simple case appears where the Fermi surface is preserved between the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases. An open issue is the consequence of Lifshitz transitions on superconductivity in these multiband systems.

Study of $e^+ e^- \to π^+ π^- J/ψ$ and Observation of a Charged Charmonium-like State at Belle

The cross section for $e^+ e^- \to π^+ π^- J/ψ$ between 3.8 GeV and 5.5 GeV is measured with a 967 fb$^{-1}$ data sample collected by the Belle detector at or near the $Υ(nS)$ ($n = 1,\ 2,\ ...,\ 5$) resonances. The Y(4260) state is observed, and its resonance parameters are determined. In addition, an excess of $π^+ π^- J/ψ$ production around 4 GeV is observed. This feature can be described by a Breit-Wigner parameterization with properties that are consistent with the Y(4008) state that was previously reported by Belle. In a study of $Y(4260) \to π^+ π^- J/ψ$ decays, a structure is observed in the $M(π^\pm\jpsi)$ mass spectrum with $5.2σ$ significance, with mass $M=(3894.5\pm 6.6\pm 4.5) {\rm MeV}/c^2$ and width $Γ=(63\pm 24\pm 26)$ MeV/$c^{2}$, where the errors are statistical and systematic, respectively. Cyclotron Resonance in the Hidden-Order Phase of URu2Si2

We report the first observation of cyclotron resonance in the hidden-order phase of ultra-clean URu$_2$Si$_2$ crystals, which allows the full determination of angle-dependent electron-mass structure of the main Fermi-surface sheets. We find an anomalous splitting of the sharpest resonance line under in-plane magnetic-field rotation. This is most naturally explained by the domain formation, which breaks the fourfold rotational symmetry of the underlying tetragonal lattice. The results reveal the emergence of an in-plane mass anisotropy with hot spots along the [110] direction, which can account for the anisotropic in-plane magnetic susceptibility reported recently. This is consistent with the `nematic' Fermi liquid state, in which itinerant electrons have unidirectional correlations.

Direct-Photon Production in p+p Collisions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV at Midrapidity

The differential cross section for the production of direct photons in p+p collisions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV at midrapidity was measured in the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Inclusive-direct photons were measured in the transverse-momentum range from 5.5--25 GeV/c, extending the range beyond previous measurements. Event structure was studied with an isolation criterion. Next-to-leading-order perturbative-quantum-chromodynamics calculations give a good description of the spectrum. When the cross section is expressed versus x_T, the PHENIX data are seen to be in agreement with measurements from other experiments at different center-of-mass energies.

Erratum: Measurement of transverse single-spin asymmetries for J/psi production in polarized p+p collisions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV [Phys. Rev. D 82, 112008 (2010)]

We previously reported [Phys. Rev. D 82, 112008 (2010)] measurements of transverse single-spin asymmetries, A_N, in J/psi production from transversely polarized p+p collisions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV with data taken by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider in 2006 and 2008. Subsequently, we have found errors in the analysis procedures for the 2008 data, which resulted in an erroneous value for the extracted A_N. The errors affected the sorting of events into the correct left/right and forward/backward bins. This produced an incorrect value for the 2008 result, but the 2006 result is unaffected. We have conducted two independent reanalyses with these errors corrected, and we present here the corrected values for the 2008 data and the combined results for 2006 and 2008. The new combined spin asymmetry in the forward region is A_N = -0.026+/-0.026(stat)+/-0.003(sys). Since this asymmetry is consistent with zero, we no longer claim that our results suggest a possible non-zero trigluon correlation function in transversely polarized protons.

Measurement of gamma gamma* --> pi0 transition form factor at Belle

We report a measurement of the process gamma gamma* --> pi0 with a 759 fb^{-1} data sample recorded with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. The pion transition form factor, F(Q^2), is measured for the kinematical region 4 GeV^2 <~ Q^2 <~ 40 GeV^2, where -Q^2 is the invariant mass squared of a virtual photon. The measured values of Q^2|F(Q^2)| agree well with the previous measurements below Q^2 ~= 9 GeV^2 but do not exhibit the rapid growth in the higher Q^2 region seen in another recent measurement, which exceeds the asymptotic QCD expectation by as much as 50%.

Measurement of the CP-violation Parameter sin2$ϕ_1$ with a New Tagging Method at the $Υ(5S)$ Resonance

We report a measurement of the CP-violation parameter sin2$ϕ_1$ at the $Υ(5S)$ resonance using a new tagging method, called "$B$-$π$ tagging." In $Υ(5S)$ decays containing a neutral $B$ meson, a charged $B$, and a charged pion, the neutral $B$ is reconstructed in the $J/ψK_S^0$ CP-eigenstate decay channel. The initial flavor of the neutral $B$ meson at the moment of the $Υ(5S)$ decay is opposite to that of the charged $B$ and may thus be inferred from the charge of the pion without reconstructing the charged $B$. From the asymmetry between $B$-$π^+$ and $B$-$π^-$ tagged $J/ψK_S^0$ yields, we determine sin2$ϕ_1$ = 0.57 $\pm$ 0.58(stat) $\pm$ 0.06(syst). The results are based on 121 fb$^{-1}$ of data recorded by the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+ e^-$ collider.

Medium modification of jet fragmentation in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV measured in direct photon-hadron correlations

The jet fragmentation function is measured with direct photon-hadron correlations in p+p and Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV. The p_T of the photon is an excellent approximation to the initial p_T of the jet and the ratio z_T=p_T^h/p_T^γis used as a proxy for the jet fragmentation function. A statistical subtraction is used to extract the direct photon-hadron yields in Au+Au collisions while a photon isolation cut is applied in p+p. I_ AA, the ratio of jet fragment yield in Au+Au to that in p+p, indicates modification of the jet fragmentation function. Suppression, most likely due to energy loss in the medium, is seen at high z_T. The fragment yield at low z_T is enhanced at large angles. Such a trend is expected from redistribution of the lost energy into increased production of low-momentum particles.

Possibility of valence-fluctuation mediated superconductivity in Cd-doped CeIrIn$_5$ probed by In-NQR

We report on a pressure-induced evolution of exotic superconductivity and spin correlations in CeIr(In$_{1-x}$Cd$_{x}$)$_5$ by means of In-Nuclear-Quadrupole-Resonance (NQR) studies. Measurements of an NQR spectrum and nuclear-spin-lattice-relaxation rate $1/T_1$ have revealed that antiferromagnetism induced by the Cd-doping emerges locally around Cd dopants, but superconductivity is suddenly induced at $T_c$ = 0.7 and 0.9 K at 2.34 and 2.75 GPa, respectively. The unique superconducting characteristics with a large fraction of the residual density of state at the Fermi level that increases with $T_c$ differ from those for anisotropic superconductivity mediated by antiferromagnetic correlations. By incorporating the pressure dependence of the NQR frequency pointing to the valence change of Ce, we suggest that unconventional superconductivity in the CeIr(In$_{1-x}$Cd$_{x}$)$_5$ system may be mediated by valence fluctuations.

We report a study of the decay $B^0\rightarrow D K^+π^-$ followed by $D\rightarrow K^-π^+$, where $D$ indicates $D^0$ or $\bar{D}^0$. We reconstruct the $D K^+π^-$ state in a phase space corresponding to $D K^{*}(892)^0$. The CP-violating angle $ϕ_3$ affects its decay rate via the interference between $b\rightarrow u$ and $b\rightarrow c$ transitions. Production of omega mesons in p+p, d+Au, Cu+Cu, and Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) has measured omega meson production via leptonic and hadronic decay channels in p+p, d+Au, Cu+Cu, and Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV. The invariant transverse momentum spectra measured in different decay modes give consistent results. Measurements in the hadronic decay channel in Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions show that omega production has a suppression pattern at high transverse momentum, similar to that of pi^0 and eta in central collisions, but no suppression is observed in peripheral collisions. The nuclear modification factors, R_AA, are consistent in Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at similar numbers of participant nucleons.

Rotational Symmetry Breaking in the Hidden-Order Phase of URu2Si2

A second-order phase transition is characterized by spontaneous symmetry breaking. The nature of the broken symmetry in the so-called "hidden order" phase transition in the heavy fermion compound URu2Si2, at transition temperature T_h=17.5 K, has posed a long-standing mystery. We report the emergence of an in-plane anisotropy of the magnetic susceptibility below T_h, which breaks the four-fold rotational symmetry of the tetragonal URu2Si2. Two-fold oscillations in the magnetic torque under in-plane field rotation were sensitively detected in small pure crystals. Our findings suggest that the hidden-order phase is an electronic "nematic" phase, a translationally invariant metallic phase with spontaneous breaking of rotational symmetry.

Suppression of back-to-back hadron pairs at forward rapidity in d+Au Collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV

Back-to-back hadron pair yields in d+Au and p+p collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV were measured with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Rapidity separated hadron pairs were detected with the trigger hadron at pseudorapidity |eta|<0.35 and the associated hadron at forward rapidity (deuteron direction, 3.0<eta<3.8). Pairs were also detected with both hadrons measured at forward rapidity; in this case the yield of back-to-back hadron pairs in d+Au collisions with small impact parameters is observed to be suppressed by a factor of 10 relative to p+p collisions. The kinematics of these pairs is expected to probe partons in the Au nucleus with low fraction x of the nucleon momenta, where the gluon densities rise sharply. The observed suppression as a function of nuclear thickness, p_T, and eta points to cold nuclear matter effects arising at high parton densities.

Twofold spontaneous symmetry breaking in a heavy fermion superconductor UPt$_3$

The field-orientation dependent thermal conductivity of the heavy-fermion superconductor UPt$_3$ was measured down to very low temperatures and under magnetic fields throughout three distinct superconducting phases: A, B, and C phases. In the C phase, a striking twofold oscillation of the thermal conductivity within the basal plane is resolved reflecting the superconducting gap structure with a line of node along the a axis. Moreover, we find an abrupt vanishing of the oscillation across a transition to the B phase, as a clear indication of a change of gap symmetries. We also identify extra two line nodes below and above the equator in both B and C phases. From these results together with the symmetry consideration, the gap function of UPt$_3$ is conclusively determined as a $E_{1u}$ representation characterized by a combination of two line nodes at the tropics and point nodes at the poles.

Anomalous Temperature Dependence of Lower Critical Field in Ultraclean URu$_2$Si$_2$

To investigate a mysterious superconducting state of URu_2Si_2 embedded in the so-called hidden order state, the lower critical field H_{c1} is precisely determined down to 55 mK for H || a and H || c. For this purpose, the positional dependence of the local magnetic induction is measured on ultraclean single crystals (T_c = 1.4 K) with residual resistivity ratio exceeding 700. We find that the temperature dependence of H_{c1} significantly differs from that of any other superconductors. The whole H_{c1}(T) for H || a are well explained by the two superconducting gap structures with line and point nodes, which have been suggested by the recent thermal conductivity and specific heat measurements. On the other hand, for H || c, a change of slope with a distinct kink in H_{c1}(T), which cannot be accounted for by two gaps, is observed. This behavior for H || c sharply contrasts with the cusp behavior of H_{c1}(T) associated with a transition into another superconducting phase found in UPt_3 and U_{1-x}Th_xBe_{13}. The observed anomalous low-field diamagnetic response is possibly related to a peculiar vortex dynamics associated with chiral domains due to the multicomponent superconducting order parameter with broken time reversal symmetry.

Elliptic and hexadecapole flow of charged hadrons in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV

Differential measurements of the elliptic (v_2) and hexadecapole (v_4) Fourier flow coefficients are reported for charged hadrons as a function of transverse momentum (p_T) and collision centrality or the number of participant nucleons (N_part) for Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV. The v_{2,4} measurements at pseudorapidity |η|<=0.35 obtained with four separate reaction plane detectors positioned in the range 1.0<|η|<3.9 show good agreement, indicating the absence of significant η-dependent nonflow perturbations. Sizable values for v_4(p_T) are observed with a ratio v_4(p_T,N_part)/v_2^2(p_T,N_part)~0.8 for 50<N_part<200, which is compatible with the combined effects of a finite viscosity and initial eccentricity fluctuations. For N_part>200 this ratio increases up to 1.7 in the most central collisions.

Measurement of neutral mesons in p+p collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV and scaling properties of hadron production

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has measured the invariant differential cross section for production of K^0_S , ω, ηprime, and ϕmesons in p + p collisions at = 200 GeV. Measurements ωand ϕproduction in different decay channels give consistent results. New results for the ϕare in agreement with previously published data and extend the measured pT coverage. The spectral shapes of all hadron transverse momentum distributions measured by PHENIX are well described by a Tsallis distribution functional form with only two parameters, n and T, determining the high-pT and characterizing the low-pT regions of the spectra, respectively. The values of these parameters are very similar for all analyzed meson spectra, but with a lower parameter T extracted for protons. The integrated invariant cross sections calculated from the fitted distributions are found to be consistent with existing measurements and with statistical model predictions.

Measurement of Transverse Single-Spin Asymmetries for J/psi Production in Polarized p+p Collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV

We report the first measurement of transverse single-spin asymmetries in $J/ψ$ production from transversely polarized $p+p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 200$ GeV with data taken by the PHENIX experiment in 2006 and 2008. The measurement was performed over the rapidity ranges $1.2 < |y| < 2.2$ and $ |y| < 0.35$ for transverse momenta up to 6 GeV/$c$. $J/ψ$ production at RHIC is dominated by processes involving initial-state gluons, and transverse single-spin asymmetries of the $J/ψ$ can provide access to gluon dynamics within the nucleon. Such asymmetries may also shed light on the long-standing question in QCD of the $J/ψ$ production mechanism. Asymmetries were obtained as a function of $J/ψ$ transverse momentum and Feynman-$x$, with a value of $-0.086 \pm 0.026^{\rm stat} \pm 0.003^{\rm syst}$ in the forward region. This result suggests possible nonzero trigluon correlation functions in transversely polarized protons and, if well defined in this reaction, a nonzero gluon Sivers distribution function.

Nuclear modification factors of phi mesons in d+Au, Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at sqrt(S_NN)=200 GeV

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) has performed systematic measurements of phi meson production in the K+K- decay channel at midrapidity in p+p, d+Au, Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at sqrt(S_NN)=200 GeV. Results are presented on the phi invariant yield and the nuclear modification factor R_AA for Au+Au and Cu+Cu, and R_dA for d+Au collisions, studied as a function of transverse momentum (1<p_T<7 GeV/c) and centrality. In central and mid-central Au+Au collisions, the R_AA of phi exhibits a suppression relative to expectations from binary scaled p+p results. The amount of suppression is smaller than that of the neutral pion and the eta meson in the intermediate p_T range (2--5 GeV/c); whereas at higher p_T the phi, pi^0, and eta show similar suppression. The baryon (protons and anti-protons) excess observed in central Au+Au collisions at intermediate p_T is not observed for the phi meson despite the similar mass of the proton and the phi. This suggests that the excess is linked to the number of constituent quarks rather than the hadron mass. The difference gradually disappears with decreasing centrality and for peripheral collisions the R_AA values for both particles are consistent with binary scaling. Cu+Cu collisions show the same yield and suppression as Au+Au collisions for the same number of N_part. The R_dA of phi shows no evidence for cold nuclear effects within uncertainties.

Suppression of away-side jet fragments with respect to the reaction plane in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV

Pair correlations between large transverse momentum neutral pion triggers (p_T=4--7 GeV/c) and charged hadron partners (p_T=3--7 GeV/c) in central (0--20%) and midcentral (20--60%) Au+Au collisions are presented as a function of trigger orientation with respect to the reaction plane. The particles are at larger momentum than where jet shape modifications have been observed, and the correlations are sensitive to the energy loss of partons traveling through hot dense matter. An out-of-plane trigger particle produces only 26+/-20% of the away-side pairs that are observed opposite of an in-plane trigger particle. In contrast, near-side jet fragments are consistent with no suppression or dependence on trigger orientation with respect to the reaction plane. These observations are qualitatively consistent with a picture of little near-side parton energy loss either due to surface bias or fluctuations and increased away-side parton energy loss due to a long path through the medium. The away-side suppression as a function of reaction-plane angle is shown to be sensitive to both the energy loss mechanism in and the space-time evolution of heavy-ion collisions.

Transverse momentum dependence of eta meson suppression in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV

New measurements by the PHENIX experiment at RHIC for eta production at midrapidity as a function of transverse momentum (p_T) and collision centrality in sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV Au+Au and p+p collisions are presented. They indicate nuclear modification factors (R_AA) that are similar both in magnitude and trend to those found in earlier pi^0 measurements. Linear fits to R_AA in the 5--20 GeV/c p_T region show that the slope is consistent with zero within two standard deviations at all centralities although a slow rise cannot be excluded. Having different statistical and systematic uncertainties the pi^0 and eta measurements are complementary at high p_T; thus, along with the extended p_T range of these data they can provide additional constraints for theoretical modeling and the extraction of transport properties.

Evolution of the Fermi surface of BaFe_2(As_{1-x}P_x)_2 on entering the superconducting dome

Using the de Haas-van Alphen effect we have measured the evolution of the Fermi surface of BaFe_2(As_{1-x}P_x)_2 as function of isoelectric substitution (As/P) for 0.41<x<1 (T_c up to 25 K). We find that the volume of electron and hole Fermi surfaces shrink linearly with decreasing x. This shrinking is accompanied by a strong increase in the quasiparticle effective mass as x is tuned toward the maximum T_c. It is likely that these trends originate from the many-body interaction which give rise to superconductivity, rather than the underlying one-electron bandstructure.

Sign reversal of field-angle resolved heat capacity oscillations in a heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn$_5$ and $d_{x^2-y^2}$ pairing symmetry

To identify the superconducting gap symmetry in CeCoIn5 (Tc=2.3 K), we performed angle-resolved specific heat (C_ϕ) measurements in a field rotated around the c-axis down to very low temperatures 0.05Tc and detailed theoretical calculations. In a field of 1 T, a sign reversal of the fourfold angular oscillation in C_ϕhas been observed at T ~ 0.1Tc on entering a quasiclassical regime where the maximum of C_ϕcorresponds to the antinodal direction, coinciding with the angle-resolved density of states (ADOS) calculation. The C_ϕbehavior, which exhibits minima along [110] directions, unambiguously allows us to conclude d_{x^2-y^2} symmetry of this system. The ADOS-quasiclassical region is confined to a narrow T and H domain within T/Tc ~ 0.1 and 1.5 T (0.13Hc2).

Spin Susceptibility of Noncentrosymmetric Heavy-fermion Superconductor CeIrSi3 under Pressure: 29Si-Knight Shift Study on Single Crystal

We report 29Si-NMR study on a single crystal of the heavy-fermion superconductor CeIrSi3 without an inversion symmetry along the c-axis. The 29Si-Knight shift measurements under pressure have revealed that the spin susceptibility for the ab-plane decreases slightly below Tc, whereas along the c-axis it does not change at all. The result can be accounted for by the spin susceptibility in the superconducting state being dominated by the strong antisymmetric (Rashba-type) spin-orbit interaction that originates from the absence of an inversion center along the c-axis and it being much larger than superconducting condensation energy. This is the first observation which exhibits an anisotropy of the spin susceptibility below Tc in the noncentrosymmetric superconductor dominated by strong Rashba-type spin-orbit interaction.

Unusual behaviours and Impurity Effects in the Noncentrosymmetric Superconductor CePt3Si

We report a study in which the effect of defects/impurities, growth process, off-stoichiometry, and presence of impurity phases on the superconducting properties of noncentrosymmetric CePt3Si is analysed by means of the temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth. We found that the linear low-temperature response of the penetration depth -indicative of line nodes in this material- is robust regarding sample quality, in contrast to what is observed in unconventional centrosymmetric superconductors with line nodes. We discuss evidence that the broadness of the superconducting transition may be intrinsic, though not implying the existence of a second superconducting transition. The superconducting transition temperature systematically occurs around 0.75 K in our measurements, in agreement with resistivity and ac magnetic susceptibility data but in conflict with specific heat, thermal conductivity and NMR data in which Tc is about 0.5 K. Random defects do not change the linear low-temperature dependence of the penetration depth in the heavy-fermion CePt3Si with line nodes, as they do in unconventional centrosymmetric superconductors with line nodes.

In the SC state at P=2.7-2.8 GPa, the temperature dependence of the nuclear-spin lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 below Tc exhibits a T^3 behavior without any coherence peak just below Tc, revealing the presence of line nodes in the SC gap. In the normal state, 1/T_1 follows a \sqrt{T}-like behavior, suggesting that the SC emerges under the non-Fermi liquid state dominated by AFM spin fluctuations enhanced around quantum critical point (QCP). The reason why the maximum Tc in CeIrSi3 is relatively high among the Ce-based heavy-fermion superconductors may be the existence of the strong AFM spin fluctuations. We discuss the comparison with the other Ce-based heavy-fermion superconductors.

Multiband Superconductivity in Heavy Fermion Compound CePt3Si without Inversion Symmetry: An NMR Study on a High-Quality Single Crystal

We report on novel superconducting characteristics of the heavy fermion (HF) superconductor CePt3Si without inversion symmetry through 195Pt-NMR study on a single crystal with T_c= 0.46 K that is lower than T_c= 0.75 K for polycrystals. We show that the intrinsic superconducting characteristics inherent to CePt3Si can be understood in terms of the unconventional strong-coupling state with a line-node gap below T_c= 0.46 K. The mystery about the sample dependence of T_c is explained by the fact that more or less polycrystals and single crystals inevitably contain some disordered domains, which exhibit a conventional BCS s-wave superconductivity (SC) below 0.8 K. In contrast, the Neel temperature T_N= 2.2 K is present regardless of the quality of samples, revealing that the Fermi surface responsible for SC differ from that for the antiferromagnetic order. These unusual characteristics of CePt3Si can be also described by a multiband model; in the homogeneous domains, the coherent HF bands are responsible for the unconventional SC, whereas in the disordered domains the conduction bands existing commonly in LaPt3Si may be responsible for the conventional s-wave SC. We remark that some impurity scatterings in the disordered domains break up the 4f-electrons-derived coherent bands but not others. In this context, the small peak in 1/T_1 just below T_c reported in the previous paper (Yogi et al, 2004) is not due to a two-component order parameter composed of spin-singlet and spin-triplet Cooper pairing states, but due to the contamination of the disorder domains which are in the s-wave SC state.

Universal scaling in the dynamical conductivity of heavy fermion Ce and Yb compounds

Dynamical conductivity spectra s(w) have been measured for a diverse range of heavy-fermion (HF) Ce and Yb compounds. A characteristic excitation peak has been observed in the mid-infrared region of s(w) for all the compounds, and has been analyzed in terms of a simple model based on conduction (c)-f electron hybridized band. A universal scaling is found between the observed peak energies and the estimated c-f hybridization strengths of these HF compounds. This scaling demonstrates that the model of c-f hybridized band can generally and quantitatively describe the charge excitation spectra of a wide range of HF compounds.

Non-Fermi liquid behavior in the magnetotransport of CeMIn5 (M: Co and Rh): Striking similarity between quasi 2D heavy fermion and high-Tc cuprates

We present a systematic study of the dc-resistivity, Hall effect, and magnetoresistance in the normal state of quasi 2D heavy fermion superconductors CeMIn5 (M: Rh and Co) under pressure. Here the electronic system evolves with pressure from an antiferromagnetic (AF) metal, through a highly unconventional non-Fermi liquid, and finally into a Fermi-liquid state. The amplitude of the Hall coefficient increases dramatically with decreasing T, reaching at low temperatures a value significantly larger than 1/ne. Furthermore, the magnetoresistance is characterized by T- and H-dependence which clearly violate Kohler's rule. We found that the Hall angle cotΘvaries as T^2, and the magnetoresistance is well scaled by the Hall angle as Δρ_{xx}/ρ_{xx}\propto \tan^2Θ. These non-Fermi liquid properties in the electron transport are remarkably pronounced when the AF fluctuations are enhanced in the vicinity of the QCP. We lay particular emphasis on the striking resemblance of these anomalous magnetotransport with those of the high-Tc cuprates. We argue that features commonly observed in quasi 2D heavy fermion and cuprates very likely capture universal features of strongly correlated electron systems.

Normal-state Hall Angle and Magnetoresistance in quasi-2D Heavy Fermion CeCoIn_5 near a Quantum Critical Point

The normal-state Hall effect and magnetoresisitance (MR) have been measured in the quasi-2D heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn_5. In the non-Fermi liquid region where the reistivity rho_xx exhibits an almost perfect T-linear dependence, the Hall angle varies as cot theta_H propto T^2 and the MR displays a strong violation of Kohler's rule. We demonstrate a novel relation between the MR and the Hall conductivity, Delta rho_xx/rho_xx propto (sigma_xy rho_xx)^2. These results bear a striking resemblance to the normal-state properties of high-T_c cuprates, indicating universal transport properties in the presence of quasi-2D antiferromagnetic fluctuations near a quantum critical point.

Superconductivity of epsilon-Fe: complete resistive transition

Last year, iron was reported to become superconducting at temperatures below 2K and pressures between 15 and 30 GPa. The evidence presented was a weak resistivity drop, suppressed by a magnetic field above 0.2 T, and a small Meissner signal. However, a compelling demonstration, such as the occurrence of zero resistance, was lacking. Here we report the measurement of a complete resistive transition at 22.2 GPa with an onset slightly above 2 K in two very pure samples of iron, of different origins. The superconductivity appears unusually sensitive to disorder, developing only when the electronic mean free path is above a threshold value, while the normal state resistivity is characteristic of a nearly ferromagnetic metal.
