Puzzles in the $B^0_s \rightarrow D_s^{\pm} K^{\mp} $ System

Non-leptonic $B^0_s \rightarrow D_s^{\pm} K^{\mp}$ transitions are particularly interesting processes to test the Standard Model. As these decays occur via pure tree diagrams, they allow a theoretically clean determination of the angle $γ$ of the unitarity triangle. Considering recent LHCb results, an intriguing picture arises, showing tension with the Standard Model. Extracting the branching ratios of the underlying $\bar{B}^0_s \rightarrow D_s^{\pm} K^{\mp}$ modes and combining them with information from semileptonic $B_{(s)}$ decays, we arrive at another puzzling situation, in accordance with similar decays. These patterns could be footprints of New Physics. We present a model-independent strategy to include such New-Physics effects and apply it to the data. Interestingly, new contributions of moderate size could accommodate the data. This formalism offers an exciting probe for new sources of CP violation at the future high-precision B physics era.

Testing Lepton Flavour Universality with (Semi)-Leptonic $D_{(s)}$ Decays

Data in $B$-meson decays indicate violations of lepton flavour universality, thereby raising the question about such phenomena in the charm sector. We perform a model-independent analysis of NP contributions in (semi)-leptonic decays of $D_{(s)}$ mesons which originate from $c \to d \bar{\ell} ν_{\ell}$ and $c \to s \bar{\ell} ν_{\ell}$ charge-current interactions. Starting from the most general low-energy effective Hamiltonian containing four-fermion operators and the corresponding short-distance coefficients, we explore the impact of new (pseudo)-scalar, vector and tensor operators and constrain their effects through the interplay with current data. We pay special attention to the elements $|V_{cd}|$ and $|V_{cs}|$ of the Cabibbo--Kobayashi--Maskawa matrix and extract them from the $D_{(s)}$ decays in the presence of possible NP decay contributions, comparing them with determinations utilizing unitarity. We find a picture in agreement with the Standard Model within the current uncertainties. Using the results from our analysis, we make also predictions for leptonic $D_{(s)}^+ \to e^+ ν_e$ modes which could be hugely enhanced with respect to their tiny Standard Model branching ratios. It will be interesting to apply our strategy at the future high-precision frontier.

New Strategy to Explore CP Violation with $B^0_s\to K^-K^+$

The $U$-spin symmetry provides a powerful tool to extract the angle $γ$ of the Unitarity Triangle and the $B_s^0$-$\bar{B}_s^0$ mixing phase $ϕ_s$ from CP violation in the $B^0_s\to K^-K^+$, $B^0_d\toπ^-π^+$ system. LHCb has obtained first results with uncertainties at the $7^\circ$ level. Due to $U$-spin-breaking corrections, it will be challenging to reduce the uncertainty below ${\cal O}(5^\circ)$ at Belle II and the LHCb upgrade. We propose a new strategy, using $γ$ as input and utilizing $B^0_s\to K^-\ell^+ν_\ell$, $B^0_d\to π^-\ell^+ν_\ell$ decays, which allows an extraction of $ϕ_s$ with a future theoretical precision of up to ${\cal O}(0.5^\circ)$, thereby matching the experimental prospects. Since $B^0_s\to K^-K^+$ is dominated by penguin topologies, new sources of CP violation may be revealed.

A Roadmap to Control Penguin Effects in $B^0_d\to J/ψK_{\rm S}^0$ and $B^0_s\to J/ψϕ$

Measurements of CP violation in $B^0_d\to J/ψK_{\rm S}^0$ and $B^0_s\to J/ψϕ$ decays play key roles in testing the quark-flavour sector of the Standard Model. The theoretical interpretation of the corresponding observables is limited by uncertainties from doubly Cabibbo-suppressed penguin topologies. With continuously increasing experimental precision, it is mandatory to get a handle on these contributions, which cannot be calculated reliably in QCD. In the case of the measurement of $\sin2β$ from $B^0_d\to J/ψK_{\rm S}^0$, the $U$-spin-related decay $B^0_s\to J/ψK_{\rm S}^0$ offers a tool to control the penguin effects. As the required measurements are not yet available, we use data for decays with similar dynamics and the $SU(3)$ flavour symmetry to constrain the size of the expected penguin corrections. We predict the CP asymmetries of $B^0_s\to J/ψK_{\rm S}^0$ and present a scenario to fully exploit the physics potential of this decay, emphasising also the determination of hadronic parameters and their comparison with theory. In the case of the benchmark mode $B^0_s\to J/ψϕ$ used to determine the $B^0_s$-$\bar B^0_s$ mixing phase $ϕ_s$ the penguin effects can be controlled through $B^0_d\to J/ψρ^0$ and $B^0_s\to J/ψ\bar{K}^{*0}$ decays. The LHCb collaboration has recently presented pioneering results on this topic. We analyse their implications and present a roadmap for controlling the penguin effects.

Anatomy of $B\rightarrow D\bar{D}$ Decays

The decays $B_d^0\rightarrow D_d^-D_d^+$ and $B_s^0\rightarrow D_s^-D_s^+$ probe the CP-violating mixing phases $ϕ_d$ and $ϕ_s$, respectively. The theoretical uncertainty of the corresponding determinations is limited by contributions from penguin topologies, which can be included with the help of the $U$-spin symmetry of the strong interaction. We analyse the currently available data for $B^0_{d,s}\rightarrow D_{d,s}^-D_{d,s}^+$ decays and those with similar dynamics to constrain the involved non-perturbative parameters. Using further information from semileptonic $B_d^0\rightarrow D_d^-\ell^+ν_{\ell}$ decays, we perform a test of the factorisation approximation and take non-factorisable $SU(3)$-breaking corrections into account. The branching ratios of the $B_d^0\rightarrow D_d^-D_d^+$, $B_s^0\rightarrow D_s^-D_d^+$ and $B_s^0\rightarrow D_s^-D_s^+$, $B_d^0\rightarrow D_d^-D_s^+$ decays show an interesting pattern which can be accommodated through significantly enhanced exchange and penguin annihilation topologies. This feature is also supported by data for the $B_s^0\rightarrow D_d^-D_d^+$ channel. Moreover, there are indications of potentially enhanced penguin contributions in the $B_d^0\rightarrow D_d^-D_d^+$ and $B_s^0\rightarrow D_s^-D_s^+$ decays, which would make it mandatory to control these effects in the future measurements of $ϕ_d$ and $ϕ_s$. We discuss scenarios for high-precision measurements in the era of Belle II and the LHCb upgrade.

Theoretical Prospects for B Physics

The exploration of B-meson decays has reached an unprecedented level of sophistication, with a phase of even much higher precision ahead of us thanks to run 2 of the LHC and the future era of Belle II and the LHCb upgrade. For many processes, the theoretical challenge in the quest to reveal possible footprints of physics beyond the Standard Model will be the control of uncertainties from strong interactions. After a brief discussion of the global picture emerging from the LHC data, I will focus on the theoretical prospects and challenges for benchmark B decays to search for new sources of CP violation, and highlight future opportunities to probe the Standard Model with strongly suppressed rare B decays.

Towards New Frontiers in CP Violation in B Decays

CP-violating effects in decays of B mesons offer a wide spectrum of probes for testing the phase structure of the quark-flavour sector of the Standard Model. After a brief discussion of the picture emerging from the current LHC data, the focus will be put on two specific topics: hadronic uncertainties from penguin topologies on measurements of the $B^0_q$-$\bar B^0_q$ mixing phases ($q\in\{d,s\}$), and the U-spin-related decays $B^0_s\to K^+K^-$ and $B^0_d\toπ^+π^-$. Valuable new insights are expected from future studies of CP violation in B decays. For the detection of possible new sources of CP violation, it will be crucial to match the experimental and theoretical precisions and to have a careful look at the underlying assumptions.

Probing New Physics with the B_s to μ+ μ- Time-Dependent Rate

The B_s to mu+ mu- decay plays an outstanding role in tests of the Standard Model and physics beyond it. The LHCb collaboration has recently reported the first evidence for this decay at the 3.5 sigma level, with a branching ratio in the ballpark of the Standard Model prediction. Thanks to the recently established sizable decay width difference of the B_s system, another observable, A^mumu_DeltaGamma, is available, which can be extracted from the time-dependent untagged B_s to mu+ mu- rate. If tagging information is available, a CP-violating asymmetry, S_mumu, can also be determined. These two observables exhibit sensitivity to New Physics that is complementary to the branching ratio. We define and analyse scenarios in which these quantities allow us to discriminate between model-independent effective operators and their CP-violating phases. In this context we classify a selection of popular New Physics models into the considered scenarios. Furthermore, we consider specific models with tree-level FCNCs mediated by a heavy neutral gauge boson, pseudoscalar or scalar, finding striking differences in the predictions of these scenarios for the observables considered and the correlations among them. We update the Standard Model prediction for the time-integrated branching ratio taking the subtle decay width difference effects into account. We find (3.56 +/- 0.18) x 10^-9, and discuss the error budget.

Rare Decays and CP Violation in the $B_s$ System

CP violating phenomena and rare decays of $B_s$ mesons offer interesting probes to test the quark-flavor sector of the Standard Model. In view of plenty of data reported in particular from the Large Hadron Collider, this topic has received a lot of attention in 2012. We give an overview of the the most recent experimental results, new theoretical developments, and discuss the prospects for the future exploration of the $B_s$-meson system.

Branching Ratio Measurements of $B_s$ Decays

We have just entered an era of precision measurements for $B_s$-decay observables. A characteristic feature of the $B_s$-meson system is $B^0_s$--$\bar B^0_s$ mixing, which exhibits a sizable decay width difference. The latter feature leads to a subtle complication for the extraction of branching ratios of $B_s$ decays from untagged data samples, leading to systematic biases as large as O(10%) that depend on the dynamics of the considered decay. We point out that this effect can only be corrected for using information from a time-dependent analysis and suggest the use of the effective $B_s$ decay lifetime, which can already be extracted from the untagged data sample, for this purpose. We also address several experimental issues that can play a role in the extraction of effective lifetimes at a hadron collider, and advocate the use of the $B_s$ branching ratios, as presented in this note, for consistent comparisons of theoretical calculations and experimental measurements in particle listings.

Exploring $B_s \to D_s^{(*)\pm} K^\mp$ Decays in the Presence of a Sizable Width Difference $ΔΓ_s$

The $B_s \to D_s^{(*)\pm} K^\mp$ decays allow a theoretically clean determination of $ϕ_s+γ$, where $ϕ_s$ is the $B^0_s$-$\bar B^0_s$ mixing phase and $γ$ the usual angle of the unitarity triangle. A sizable $B_s$ decay width difference $ΔΓ_s$ was recently established, which leads to subtleties in analyses of the $B_s \to D_s^{(*)\pm} K^\mp$ branching ratios but also offers new "untagged" observables, which do not require a distinction between initially present $B^0_s$ or $\bar B^0_s$ mesons. We clarify these effects and address recent measurements of the ratio of the $B_s\to D_s^\pm K^\mp$, $B_s\to D_s^\pmπ^\mp$ branching ratios. In anticipation of future LHCb analyses, we apply the SU(3) flavour symmetry of strong interactions to convert the $B$-factory data for $B_d\to D^{(*)\pm}π^\mp$, $B_d\to D_s^{\pm}π^\mp$ decays into predictions of the $B_s \to D_s^{(*)\pm} K^\mp$ observables, and discuss strategies for the extraction of $ϕ_s+γ$, with a special focus on untagged observables and the resolution of discrete ambiguities. Using our theoretical predictions as a guideline, we make simulations to estimate experimental sensitivities, and extrapolate to the end of the planned LHCb upgrade. We find that the interplay between the untagged observables, which are accessible thanks to the sizable $ΔΓ_s$, and the mixing-induced CP asymmetries, which require tagging, will play the key role for the experimental determination of $ϕ_s+γ$.

On Branching Ratios of $B_s$ Decays and the Search for New Physics in $B^0_s\to μ^+μ^-$

The LHCb experiment has recently established a sizable width difference between the mass eigenstates of the $B_s$-meson system. This phenomenon leads to a subtle difference at the 10% level between the experimental branching ratios of $B_s$ decays extracted from time-integrated, untagged data samples and their theoretical counterparts. Measuring the corresponding effective $B_s$-decay lifetimes, both branching ratio concepts can be converted into each other. The rare decay $B^0_s\to μ^+μ^-$ and the search for New Physics through this channel is also affected by this effect, which enhances the Standard-Model reference value of the branching ratio by O(10%), while the effective lifetime offers a new observable to search for physics beyond the Standard Model that is complementary to the branching ratio.

Penguin Effects in $ϕ_{d,s}$ Determinations

The theoretical precision of the measurement of the $B^0_{d,s}$-$\bar B^0_{d,s}$ mixing phases $ϕ_{d,s}$ through the benchmark decays $B^0_d\to J/ψK_S$, $B^0_s\to J/ψϕ$ and $B^0_s\to J/ψf_0(980)$ is limited by doubly Cabibbo-suppressed penguin topologies which are usually neglected. However, the search for New-Physics effects in the quark-flavor sector has entered a territory where these effects have to be taken into account, which will be particularly relevant for the LHCb upgrade era. Thanks to their non-perturbative nature, the penguin corrections cannot be calculated but have rather to be controlled through experimental data. An overview of the picture of the penguin parameters originating from the current data for $B_{(s)}\to J/ψπ, J/ψK$ decays and the physics potential of the control channels $B^0_s\to J/ψK_{\rm S}$, $B^0_s\to J/ψ\bar K^{*0}$ and $B_d^0\to J/ψf_0(980)$ is given, emphasizing also the usefulness of effective $B_s$ decay lifetimes.

Probing New Physics via the $B^0_s\to μ^+μ^-$ Effective Lifetime

We have recently seen new upper bounds for $B^0_s\to μ^+μ^-$, a key decay to search for physics beyond the Standard Model. Furthermore a non-vanishing decay width difference $ΔΓ_s$ of the $B_s$ system has been measured. We show that $ΔΓ_s$ affects the extraction of the $B^0_s\to μ^+μ^-$ branching ratio and the resulting constraints on the New Physics parameter space, and give formulae for including this effect. Moreover, we point out that $ΔΓ_s$ provides a new observable, the effective $B^0_s\to μ^+μ^-$ lifetime $τ_{μ^+μ^-}$, which offers a theoretically clean probe for New Physics searches that is complementary to the branching ratio. Should the $B^0_s\to μ^+μ^-$ branching ratio agree with the Standard Model, the measurement of $τ_{μ^+μ^-}$, which appears feasible at upgrades of the LHC experiments, may still reveal large New Physics effects.

Theory News on $B_{s(d)} \to μ^+μ^-$ Decays

The rare decays $B_{s(d)} \to μ^+μ^-$ play a key role for the testing of the Standard Model. An overview of the most recent theoretical predictions of the corresponding branching ratios is given, emphasizing that the sizable decay width difference $ΔΓ_s$ of the $B_s$-meson system affects the $B_s\to μ^+μ^-$ channel. As a consequence, the calculated Standard Model branching ratio has to be upscaled by about 10% to BR$(B_s\to μ^+μ^-)=(3.54\pm0.30)\times 10^{-9}$. This prediction is the reference value for the comparison with the time-integrated experimental branching ratio, where LHCb has recently reported $(3.2^{+1.5}_{-1.2})\times10^{-9}$ corresponding to the first evidence for $B_s\to μ^+μ^-$. The $ΔΓ_s$ effects have also to be included in the constraints on the parameter space of New-Physics models following from the experimental data. Furthermore, $ΔΓ_s$ makes a new observable through the effective $B_s\to μ^+μ^-$ lifetime accessible, which probes New Physics in a way complementary to the branching ratio and adds an exciting new topic to the agenda for the high-luminosity upgrade of the LHC.

Anatomy of $B^0_{s,d} \to J/ψf_0(980)$

The $B^0_s\to J/ψf_0(980)$ decay offers an interesting experimental alternative to the well-known $B^0_s\to J/ψϕ$ channel for the search of CP-violating New-Physics contributions to $B^0_s$--$\bar B^0_s$ mixing. As the hadronic structure of the $f_0(980)$ has not yet been settled, we take a critical look at the implications for the relevant observables and address recent experimental data. It turns out that the effective lifetime of $B^0_s\to J/ψf_0(980)$ and its mixing-induced CP asymmetry $S$ are quite robust with respect to hadronic effects and thereby allow us to search for a large CP-violating $B^0_s$--$\bar B^0_s$ mixing phase $ϕ_s$, which is tiny in the Standard Model. However, should small CP violation, i.e. in the range $-0.1\lsim S\lsim 0$, be found in $B^0_s\to J/ψf_0(980)$, it will be crucial to constrain hadronic corrections in order to distinguish possible New-Physics effects from the Standard Model. We point out that $B^0_d\to J/ψf_0(980)$, which has not yet been measured, is a key channel in this respect and discuss the physics potential of this decay.

Exploring CP Violation and $η$-$η'$ Mixing with the $B^0_{s,d} \to J/ψη^{(\prime)}$ Systems

The $B^0_{s,d} \to J/ψη^{(\prime)}$ decays provide new terrain for exploring CP violation. After briefly discussing $η$-$η'$ mixing, we analyse the effective lifetimes and CP-violating observables of the $B_s$ channels, which allow us to probe New-Physics effects in $B^0_s$-$\bar B^0_s$ mixing. We have a critical look at these observables and show how hadronic corrections can be controlled by means of the $B_d$ decays. Using measurements of the $B^0_{s,d}\to J/ψη^{(\prime)}$ branching ratios by the Belle collaboration, we discuss tests of the $SU(3)_F$ flavour symmetry of strong interactions, obtain the first constraints on the hadronic parameters entering the $B^0_{s,d} \to J/ψη$ system, and predict the $B^0_d\to J/ψη'$ branching ratio at the $5\times10^{-6}$ level. Furthermore, we present strategies for the determination of the $η$-$η'$ mixing parameters from the $B^0_{s,d} \to J/ψη^{(\prime)}$ observables. We also observe that the $B^0_{s,d} \to J/ψη$ and $B^0_{s,d} \to J/ψη'$ decays are - from a formal point of view - analogous to the quark-antiquark and tetraquark descriptions of the $f_0(980)$ in the $B^0_{s,d} \to J/ψf_0(980)$ channels, respectively.

Tests of Factorization and SU(3) Relations in B Decays into Heavy-Light Final States

Using data from the B factories and the Tevatron, we perform tests of how well non-leptonic B decays of the kind B -> D^{(*)}_{(s)} P, where P is a pion or kaon, are described within the factorization framework. We find that factorization works well - as is theoretically expected - for color-allowed, tree-diagram-like topologies. Moreover, also exchange topologies, which have a non-factorizable character, do not show any anomalous behavior. We discuss also isospin triangles between the B -> D^{(*)} pi decay amplitudes, and determine the corresponding amplitudes in the complex plane, which show a significant enhancement of the color-suppressed tree contribution with respect to the factorization picture. Using data for B -> D^{(*)} K decays, we determine SU(3)-breaking effects and cannot resolve any non-factorizable SU(3)-breaking corrections larger than \sim 5%. In view of these results, we point out that a comparison between the \bar B^0_d -> D^+π^- and \bar B^0_s -> D_s^+π^- decays offers an interesting new determination of f_d/f_s. Using CDF data, we obtain the most precise value of this ratio at CDF, and discuss the prospects for a corresponding measurement at LHCb.

A Fresh Look at B_{s,d} -> pi pi, pi K, K K Decays

Using updated measurements and SU(3)-breaking form factors, we have a detailed look at the B_d -> pi^+ pi^-, B_s -> K^+ K^- and B_d -> pi^\mp K^\pm, B_s -> pi^\pm K^\mp systems. The corresponding decays are related to each other by the U-spin symmetry of strong interactions and offer determinations of the angle gamma of the unitarity triangle. In the former case, we obtain gamma=(68.3^{+4.8}_{-5.7}^{+5.0}_{-3.7}) deg, which is in excellent agreement with the Standard-Model fits of the unitarity triangle. The first errors correspond to experimental input uncertainties, while the latter are an estimate of U-spin-breaking effects. In view of this result, large CP-violating new-physics effects at the amplitude level are excluded. However, the effective B_s -> K^+ K^- lifetime and the mixing-induced CP violation in this channel offer interesting probes for New Physics in B^0_s-\bar B^0_s mixing. In the case of the B_d -> π^\mp K^\pm, B_s -> pi^\pm K^\mp system, using additional information from B^\pm -> π^\pm K, we obtain a bound of gamma \leq (71.8^{+5.4}_{-4.3}) deg, and the range 24 deg \leq gamma \leq 71 deg. We perform also tests of the U-spin symmetry and do not find any indication for large non-factorizable corrections.

B Physics in the LHC Era: Selected Topics

We have just entered a new round in the testing of the flavour sector of the Standard Model through high-precision measurements of B-meson decays. A particularly exciting aspect is the exploration of the B_s-meson system at LHCb. We focus on two particularly promising probes of new physics which may give us first solid evidence for New Physics at the LHC: the strongly suppressed rare decay B_s^0 -> mu^+mu^- and CP-violating effects in the B_s^0 -> J/psi phi channel. We discuss recent theoretical developments related to these measurements and shall also sketch other highlights of the B-physics programme in the LHC era.

Extracting gamma and Penguin Parameters from B^0_s -> J/psi K_S

The B^0_s -> J/psi K_S decay has recently been observed by the CDF collaboration and will be of interest for the LHCb experiment. It is the U-spin partner of the golden B^0_d -> J/psi K_S channel and offers a determination of the angle gamma of the unitarity triangle. Moreover, it allows us to control the hadronic penguin effects in the extraction of the B^0_d-\bar B^0_d mixing phase phi_d through a measurement of CP violation in B^0_d^0 -> J/psi K_S. We discuss the picture emerging for these measurements from an LHCb feasibility study. While LHCb will be able to extract gamma from the CP violation in B^0_d -> J/psi K_S, the main application of this channel will be the determination of hadronic penguin parameters. Such an analysis is actually needed in order to fully exploit LHCb's impressive experimental precision for the determination of phi_d from B^0_d -> J/psi K_S. We give also the target regions for the effective lifetime of B^0_s -> J/psi K_S and its CP-violating observables for improved measurements by CDF and the 2011 data taking at LHCb.

Extracting gamma and Penguin Topologies through CP Violation in B_s^0 -> J/psi K_S

The B_s^0 -> J/psi K_S decay has recently been observed by the CDF collaboration and will be of interest for the LHCb experiment. This channel will offer a new tool to extract the angle gamma of the unitarity triangle and to control doubly Cabibbo-suppressed penguin corrections to the determination of sin(2beta) from the well-known B_d^0 -> J/psi K_S mode with the help of the U-spin symmetry of strong interactions. While any competitive determination of gamma is interesting, the latter aspect is particularly relevant as LHCb will enter a territory of precision which makes the control of doubly Cabibbo-suppressed Standard-Model corrections mandatory. Using the data from CDF and the e^+e^- B factories as a guideline, we explore the sensitivity for gamma and the penguin parameters and point out that the B_s^0-\bar B_s^0 mixing phase phi_s, which is only about -2 deg in the Standard Model but may be enhanced through new physics, is a key parameter for these analyses. We find that the mixing-induced CP violation S(B_s^0 -> J/psi K_S) shows an interesting correlation with sin(phi_s), which serves as a target region for the first measurement of this observable at LHCb.

In Pursuit of New Physics with B^0_s -> K^+K^-

The B^0_s -> K^+K^- decay is the U-spin partner of B^0_d -> pi^+π^- and allows a determination of the angle gamma of the unitarity triangle of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix. Using updated information on the branching ratio and the relevant hadronic form factors, we discuss the picture that emerges for gamma from the currently available data, which is in good agreement with the fits of the unitarity triangle. We point out that the B^0_s -> K^+K^- decay also offers interesting probes to search for new physics in B^0_s-\bar B^0_s mixing, thereby complementing the well-known B^0_s -> J/psi phi analyses. The relevant observables are the effective lifetime of this channel and its mixing-induced CP asymmetry. We calculate correlations between these quantities and the CP-violating B^0_s-\bar B^0_s mixing phase, which serve as target regions for improved measurements at the Tevatron and the early data taking at the LHCb experiment. Finally, we discuss the expected situation for the optimal determination of gamma at LHCb, exploiting precise measurements of the CP violation in B^0_s -> K^+K^-.

New Strategy for B_s Branching Ratio Measurements and the Search for New Physics in B^0_s -> mu^+ mu^-

The LHCb experiment at CERN's Large Hadron Collider will soon allow us to enter a new era in the exploration of B_s decays. A particularly promising channel for the search of "new physics" is B^0_s -> mu^+ mu^-. The systematic key uncertainty affecting the measurement of this -- and in fact all B_s-decay branching ratios -- is the ratio of fragmentation functions f_d/f_s. As the presently available methods for determining f_d/f_s are not sufficient to meet the high precision at LHCb, we propose a new strategy using \bar B^0_s -> D_s^+ pi^- and \bar B^0_d -> D^+ K^-. It allows us to obtain a lower experimental bound on BR(B^0_s -> mu^+ mu^-) which offers a powerful probe for new physics. In order to go beyond this bound and to determine f_d/f_s with a theoretical precision matching the experimental one it is sufficient to know the SU(3)-breaking correction to a form-factor ratio from non-perturbative methods at the level of 20%. Thanks to our strategy, we can detect new physics in B^0_s -> mu^+ mu^- at LHCb with 5 sigma for a branching ratio as small as twice the Standard-Model value, which represents an improvement of the new-physics reach by about a factor of two with respect to the current LHCb expectation.

CP Violation and B Physics at the LHC

In this decade, there are huge efforts to explore B-meson decays, which provide an interesting playground for stringent tests of the Standard-Model description of the quark-flavour sector and the CP violation residing there. Thanks to the $e^+e^-$ B factories at KEK and SLAC, CP violation is now a well-established phenomenon in the B-meson system, and recently, also $B^0_s$--$\bar B^0_s$ mixing could be measured at the Tevatron. The decays of $B^0_s$ mesons are the key target of the B-physics programme at the LHC, and will be the focus of this presentation, discussing the theoretical aspects of various benchmark channels and the question of how much space for new-physics effects in their observables is left by the recent experimental results.

In Pursuit of New Physics in the B System

The B-meson system offers interesting probes for the search of physics beyond the Standard Model. After addressing possible signals of new-physics contributions to the B -> phi K and B -> pi K decay amplitudes, we focus on the data for B^0_q-\bar B^0_q mixing (q = d, s), giving a critical discussion of their interpretation in terms of model-independent new-physics parameters. We address, in particular, the impact of the uncertainties of the relevant input parameters, discuss benchmarks for future precision measurements at the LHC, and explore the prospects for new CP-violating effects in the B_s-meson system, which could be detected at the LHC.

New Physics in B and K Decays

Flavour physics offers interesting probes for the exploration of the Standard Model and the search for new physics. In these lectures, we focus on B- and K-meson decays, introduce the concept of low-energy effective Hamiltonians to describe them theoretically, and discuss how physics beyond the Standard Model may generically affect the roadmap of quark-flavour physics. We address then both the implications of the B-factory data for the B_d -> J/psi K_S channel and the prospects of B_s -> J/psi phi modes for hadron colliders, and discuss how the Standard Model may be challenged through B_d -> phi K_S. Finally, as an example of a systematic flavour strategy to search for new physics, we analyze puzzling patterns in the B -> pi pi, pi K data and study their interplay with rare K and B decays.

A Closer Look at $B_{d,s}\to D f_r$ Decays and Novel Avenues to Determine $γ$

Decays of neutral B mesons originating from $b\to D r$ $(r\in\{s,d\})$ processes, i.e. $B_d\to DK_{S(L)}$, $B_s\to Dη^{(')}, Dϕ, ...$ $(r=s)$ and $B_s\to DK_{S(L)}$, $B_d\to Dπ^0, Dρ^0, ...$ $(r=d)$ modes, offer valuable insights into CP violation. Here the neutral $D$ mesons may be observed through $D\to f_\pm$ or $D\to f_{NE}$, where $f_\pm$ and $f_{NE}$ are CP eigenstates and CP non-eigenstates, respectively. Recently, we pointed out that ``untagged'' and mixing-induced CP-violating $B_{d,s}\to D_\pm f_s$ observables provide a very efficient, theoretically clean determination of the angle $γ$ of the unitarity triangle. Here we perform a more detailed analysis of the $B_{d,s}\to D[\to f_\pm]f_s$ channels, and focus on $B_{d,s}\to D[\to f_{NE}] f_s$, where interference effects between Cabibbo-favoured and doubly Cabibbo-suppressed D-meson decays lead to complications. We show that $γ$ can nevertheless be determined in an elegant and essentially unambiguous manner from the $B_{d,s}\to D[\to f_{NE}]f_s$ observables with the help of the corresponding ``untagged'' $B_{d,s}\to D[\to f_\pm]f_s$ measurements. Moreover, we may also extract hadronic B- and D-decay parameters. Several interesting features of decays of the kind $B_{d,s}\to D f_d$ are also pointed out.

CP Violation and New Physics in $B_s$ Decays

The $B_s$-meson system is a key element in the $B$-physics programme of hadron colliders, offering various avenues to explore CP violation and to search for new physics. One of the most prominent decays is $B_s\to J/ψϕ$, the counterpart of $B_d\to J/ψK_S$, providing a powerful tool to search for new-physics contributions to $B^0_s$--$\bar{B^0_s}$ mixing. Another benchmark mode is $B_s\to K^+K^-$, which complements $B_d\toπ^+π^-$, thereby allowing an extraction of the angle $γ$ of the unitarity triangle that is sensitive to new-physics effects in the QCD penguin sector. Finally, we discuss new methods to constrain and determine $γ$ with the help of $B_s\to D_s^{(\ast)\pm} K^\mp$ decays, which complement $B_d\to D^{(\ast)\pm}π^\mp$ modes. Since these strategies involve ``tree'' decays, the values of $γ$ thus extracted exhibit a small sensitivity on new physics.

New Strategies to Extract Weak Phases from Neutral B Decays

We discuss new, theoretically clean strategies to determine the angle $γ$ of the unitarity triangle from $B_d\to DK_{S(L)}$, $B_s\to Dη^{(')}, Dϕ, ...$ decays, and point out that the $B_s\to DK_{S(L)}$ and $B_d\to Dπ^0, Dρ^0, ...$ modes allow very interesting determinations of the $B^0_q$--$\bar{B^0_q}$ mixing phases $ϕ_s$ and $ϕ_d$, respectively. Their colour-allowed counterparts $B_s\to D_s^{(*)\pm} K^\mp, ...$ and $B_d\to D^{(*)\pm} π^\mp, ...$ also offer new methods to probe $γ$.

New Strategies to Obtain Insights into CP Violation Through $B_s\to D_s^{\pm}K^\mp, D_s^{\ast\pm}K^\mp, ...$ and $B_d\to D^{\pm}π^\mp, D^{\ast\pm}π^\mp, ...$ Decays

Decays of the kind $B_s\to D_s^{\pm}K^\mp, D_s^{\ast\pm}K^\mp, ...$ and $B_d\to D^{\pm}π^\mp, D^{\ast\pm}π^\mp, ...$ allow us to probe $ϕ_s+γ$ and $ϕ_d+γ$, respectively, involving the angle $γ$ of the unitarity triangle and the $B^0_q$--$\bar B^0_q$ mixing phases $ϕ_q$ ($q\in\{d,s\}$). Analysing these modes in a phase-convention-independent way, we find that their mixing-induced observables are affected by a subtle $(-1)^L$ factor, where $L$ denotes the angular momentum of the $B_q$ decay products, and derive bounds on $ϕ_q+γ$. Moreover, we emphasize that ``untagged'' rates are an important ingredient for efficient determinations of weak phases, not only in the presence of a sizeable width difference $ΔΓ_q$; should $ΔΓ_s$ be sizeable, the combination of untagged with tagged $B_s\to D_s^{\pm}K^\mp,D_s^{\ast\pm}K^\mp, ...$ observables provides an elegant and unambiguous extraction of $\tan(ϕ_s+γ)$, whereas the conventional determination of $ϕ_s+γ$ is affected by an eightfold discrete ambiguity. Finally, we propose a combined analysis of $B_s\to D_s^{\pm}K^\mp, D_s^{\ast\pm}K^\mp, ...$ and $B_d\to D^{\pm}π^\mp, D^{\ast\pm}π^\mp, ...$ modes, which has important advantages, offering various interesting new strategies to extract $γ$ in an essentially unambiguous manner.

New, Efficient and Clean Strategies to Explore CP Violation Through Neutral B Decays

We point out that decays of the kind $B_d\to D_\pm K_{S(L)}$ and $B_s\to D_\pmη^{(')},D_\pmϕ, ...$, where $D_+$ and $D_-$ denote the CP-even and CP-odd eigenstates of the neutral D-meson system, respectively, provide very efficient, theoretically clean determinations of the angle $γ$ of the unitarity triangle. In this new strategy, we use the $B^0_q$--$\bar{B^0_q}$ ($q\in\{d,s\}$) mixing phase $ϕ_q$ as an input, and employ only ``untagged'' and mixing-induced CP-violating observables, which satisfy a very simple relation, allowing us to determine $\tanγ$. Using a plausible dynamical assumption, $γ$ can be fixed in an essentially unambiguous manner. The corresponding formalism can also be applied to $B_d\to D_\pmπ^0,D_\pmρ^0, >...$ and $B_s\to D_\pm K_{S(L)}$ decays. Although these modes appear less attractive for the extraction of $γ$, they provide interesting determinations of $\sinϕ_q$. In comparison with the conventional $B_d\to J/ψK_{S(L)}$ and $B_s\to J/ψϕ$ methods, these extractions do not suffer from any penguin uncertainties, and are theoretically cleaner by one order of magnitude.

Shedding Light on the "Dark Side" of $B^0_d$--$\bar B^0_d$ Mixing through $B_d\toπ^+π^-$, $K\toπν\barν$ and $B_{d,s}\toμ^+μ^-$

In a wide class of NP models, which can be motivated through generic arguments and within SUSY, we obtain large contributions to $B^0_d$--$\bar B^0_d$ mixing, but not to $ΔB=1$ processes. If we assume such a scenario, the solutions $ϕ_d\sim 47^\circ\lor 133^\circ$ for the $B^0_d$--$\bar B^0_d$ mixing phase implied by $A_{CP}^{mix}(B_d\to J/ψK_S)$ cannot be converted directly into a constraint in the $ρ$--$η$ plane. However, we may complement $ϕ_d$ with $|V_{ub}/V_{cb}|$ and the recently measured CP asymmetries in $B_d\toπ^+ π^-$ to determine the unitarity triangle, with its angles $α$, $β$ and $γ$. To this end, we have also to control penguin effects, which we do by means of the $B_d\toπ^\mp K^\pm$ branching ratio. Interestingly, the present data show a perfectly consistent picture not only for the ``standard'' solution of $ϕ_d\sim 47^\circ$, but also for $ϕ_d\sim 133^\circ$. In the latter case, the preferred region for the apex of the unitarity triangle is in the second quadrant, allowing us to accommodate conveniently $γ>90^\circ$, which is also favoured by other non-leptonic B decays such as $B\toπK$. Moreover, also the prediction for BR$(K^+\toπ^+ν\barν})$ can be brought to better agreement with experiment. Further strategies to explore this scenario with the help of $B_{d,s}\toμ^+μ^-$ decays are discussed as well.

The B -> pi K Puzzle and its Relation to Rare B and K Decays

The Standard-Model interpretation of the ratios of charged and neutral B-> pi K rates, R_c and R_n, respectively, points towards a puzzling picture. Since these observables are affected significantly by colour-allowed electroweak (EW) penguins, this ``B -> pi K puzzle'' could be a manifestation of new physics in the EW penguin sector. Performing the analysis in the R_n-R_c plane, which is very suitable for monitoring various effects, we demonstrate that we may, in fact, move straightforwardly to the experimental region in this plane through an enhancement of the relevant EW penguin parameter q. We derive analytical bounds for q in terms of a quantity L, that measures the violation of the Lipkin sum rule, and point out that strong phases around 90 deg are favoured by the data, in contrast to QCD factorisation. The B -> pi K modes imply a correlation between q and the angle gamma that in the limit of negligible rescattering effects and colour suppressed EW penguins depends only on the value of L. Concentrating on a minimal flavour-violating new-physics scenario with enhanced Z^0 penguins, we find that the current experimental values on B -> X_s mu^+ mu^- require roughly L <= 1.8. As the B -> pi K data give L = 5.7 +- 2.4, L has either to move to smaller values once the B -> pi K data improve or new sources of flavour and CP violation are needed. In turn, the enhanced values of L seen in the B -> pi K data could be accompanied by enhanced branching ratios for rare decays. Most interesting turns out to be the correlation between the B -> pi K modes and BR(K^+ -> pi^+ nu nu), with the latter depending approximately on a single ``scaling'' variable \bar L= L (|V_{ub}/V_{cb}|/0.086)^2.3.

CP Violation in the B System and Relations to $K\toπν\barν$ Decays

A review of CP violation in the $B$ system and strategies to determine the unitarity triangle of the CKM matrix is given. We begin with an introduction to the description of CP violation in the Standard Model of electroweak interactions, and discuss the basic features of the theoretical framework to deal with non-leptonic B decays, which play the main role in this review. After a brief look at CP violation in the kaon system and a discussion of the rare decays $K^+\toπ^+ν\barν$ and $K_L\toπ^0ν\barν$, we turn to the formalism of $B^0_{d,s}$--$\bar{B^0_{d,s}}$ mixing, allowing us to explore important $B$-factory benchmark modes and the $B_s$-meson system. We then focus on charged B decays, $B\toπK$ modes and the phenomenology of $U$-spin related B decays, including the $B_d\toπ^+π^-$, $B_s\to K^+K^-$ system. Finally, we discuss a particularly simple -- but very predictive -- scenario for new physics, which is provided by models with ``minimal flavour violation''. In this framework, various bounds can be derived and interesting connections between the $B$ system and the rare kaon decays $K^+\toπ^+ν\barν$ and $K_L\toπ^0ν\barν$ arise.

Exploring CP Violation through Correlations in B --> pi K, B_d --> pi^+pi^-, B_s --> K^+K^- Observable Space

We investigate allowed regions in observable space of B --> pi K, B_d --> pi^+pi^- and B_s --> K^+K^- decays, characterizing these modes in the Standard Model. After a discussion of a new kind of contour plots for the $B\toπK$ system, we focus on the mixing- induced and direct CP asymmetries of the decays B_d --> pi^+pi^- and B_s--> K^+K^-. Using experimental information on the CP-averaged B_d --> pi^{+/-}K^{+/-} and B_d --> pi^+pi^- branching ratios, the relevant hadronic penguin parameters can be constrained, implying certain allowed regions in observable space. In the case of B_d --> pi^+pi^-, an interesting situation arises now in view of the recent B-factory measurements of CP violation in this channel, allowing us to obtain new constraints on the CKM angle gamma as a function of the B^0_d--\bar{B^0_d} mixing phase phi_d=2beta, which is fixed through A_{CP}^{mix}(B_d --> J/psi K_S) up to a twofold ambiguity. If we assume that A_{CP}^{mix}(B_d --> pi^+pi^-) is positive, as indicated by recent Belle data, and that phi_d is in agreement with the ``indirect'' fits of the unitarity triangle, also the corresponding values for gamma around 60 degrees can be accommodated. On the other hand, for the second solution of phi_d, we obtain a gap around gamma ~ 60 degrees. The allowed region in the space of A_{CP}^{mix}(B_s --> K^+K^-) and A_{CP}^{dir}(B_s --> K^+K^-) is very constrained in the Standard Model, thereby providing a narrow target range for run II of the Tevatron and the experiments of the LHC era.

Status and Prospects of CKM Phase Determinations

We give an overview of direct determinations of the angles of the unitarity triangle of the CKM matrix, using CP-violating effects in B-meson decays. After a discussion of B --> pi K modes, which can be described efficiently through allowed regions in observable space and play an important role to determine gamma, we turn to extractions of the B^0_d -- bar{B^0_d} mixing phase phi_d, which equals 2 beta in the Standard Model, from B_d --> J/psi K_S, and emphasize that it is important to determine this phase unambiguously. Finally, we focus on B_d --> pi^+ pi^-, where recent B-factory data point towards large penguin contributions. The question arises now how the CP-violating observables of this mode can be transformed into information on the angles of the unitarity triangle. A promising tool to achieve this goal is offered by B_s --> K^+K^-, which is very accessible at hadronic B experiments, and allows a determination of phi_d and gamma. A variant for the e^+e^- B-factories is provided by B_d --> pi^{+/-} K^{+/-}, where data are already available, pointing to an exciting picture and a highly constrained allowed region in B_s --> K^+K^- observable space.

Bounds on the Unitarity Triangle, $\sin 2β$ and $K\toπν\barν$ Decays in Models with Minimal Flavour Violation

We present a general discussion of the unitarity triangle from $ε_K$, $ΔM_{d,s}$ and $K \to πν\overlineν$ in models with minimal flavour violation (MFV), allowing for arbitrary signs of the generalized Inami--Lim functions $F_{tt}$ and $X$ relevant for $(ε_K,ΔM_{d,s})$ and $K \to πν\overlineν$, respectively. In the models in which $F_{tt}$ has a sign opposite to the one in the Standard Model, i.e. $F_{tt}<0$, the data for $(ε_K, ΔM_{d,s})$ imply an absolute lower bound on the $B_d\toψK_{S}$ CP asymmetry $a_{ψK_S}$ of 0.69, which is substantially stronger than 0.42 arising in the case of $F_{tt}>0$. An important finding of this paper is the observation that for given $Br(K^+\toπ^+ν\overlineν)$ and $a_{ψK_S}$ only two values for $Br(K_{L}\toπ^0ν\overlineν)$, corresponding to the two signs of $X$, are possible in the full class of MFV models, independently of any new parameters arising in these models. This provides a powerful test for this class of models. Moreover, we derive absolute lower and upper bounds on $Br(K_{L}\toπ^0ν\overlineν)$ as functions of $Br(K^+\toπ^+ν\overlineν)$. Using the present experimental upper bounds on $Br(K^+\toπ^+ν\overlineν)$ and $|V_{ub}/V_{cb}|$, we obtain the absolute upper bound $Br(K_{L}\toπ^0ν\overlineν)< 7.1 \cdot 10^{-10}$ (90% C.L.).

Exploring New Physics in the $B\to ϕK$ System

Employing the SU(2) isospin symmetry of strong interactions and estimates borrowed from effective field theory, we explore the impact of new physics on the decays $B^\pm\to ϕK^\pm$ and $B_d\to ϕK_S$ in a model-independent manner. To this end, we introduce - in addition to the usual mixing-induced CP asymmetry in $B_d\to ϕK_S$ - a set of three observables, which may not only provide smoking-gun signals for new-physics contributions to different isospin channels, but also valuable insights into hadron dynamics. Imposing dynamical hierarchies of amplitudes, we discuss various patterns of these observables, including also scenarios with small and large rescattering processes. Whereas the $B\toϕK$ system provides, in general, a powerful tool to search for indications of new physics, there is also an unfortunate case, where such effects cannot be distinguished from those of the Standard Model.

General Analysis of New Physics in $B\to J/ψK$

We present a model-independent parametrization of the $B^\pm\to J/ψK^\pm$, $B_d\to J/ψK_S$ decay amplitudes by taking into account the constraints that are implied by the isospin symmetry of strong interactions. Employing estimates borrowed from effective field theory, we explore the impact of physics beyond the Standard Model and introduce -- in addition to the usual mixing-induced CP asymmetry $A_{CP}^{mix}$ in $B_d\to J/ψK_S$ -- a set of three observables, allowing a general analysis of possible new-physics effects in the $B\to J/ψK$ system. Imposing a dynamical hierarchy of amplitudes, we argue that one of these observables may already be accessible at the first-generation $B$-factories, whereas the remaining ones will probably be left for second-generation $B$ experiments. However, in the presence of large rescattering effects, all three new-physics observables may be sizeable. We also emphasize that a small value of $A_{CP}^{mix}$ could be due to new-physics effects arising at the $B\to J/ψK$ decay-amplitude level. In order to establish such a scenario, the observables introduced in this paper play a key role.

In Pursuit of New Physics with B_s Decays

The presence of a sizeable CP-violating phase in B_s^0-B_s^0-bar mixing would be an unambiguous signal of physics beyond the Standard Model. We analyse various possibilities to detect such a new phase considering both tagged and untagged decays. The effects of a sizeable width difference Delta Gamma between the B_s mass eigenstates, on which the untagged analyses rely, are included in all formulae. A novel method to find this phase from simple measurements of lifetimes and branching ratios in untagged decays is proposed. This method does not involve two-exponential fits, which require much larger statistics. For the tagged decays, an outstanding role is played by the observables of the time-dependent angular distribution of the B_s -> J/psi [-> l^+ l^-] ϕ[-> K^+K^-] decay products. We list the formulae needed for the angular analysis in the presence of both a new CP-violating phase and a sizeable Delta Gamma, and propose methods to remove a remaining discrete ambiguity in the new phase. This phase can therefore be determined in an unambiguous way.

Constraining Penguin Contributions and the CKM Angle $γ$ through $B_d\toπ^+π^-$

The decays $B_d\toπ^+π^-$ and $B_s\to K^+K^-$ provide an interesting strategy to extract the CKM angle $γ$ at ``second-generation'' $B$-physics experiments of the LHC era. A variant for ``first-generation'' experiments can be obtained, if $B_s\to K^+K^-$ is replaced by $B_d\toπ^\mp K^\pm$. We show that the most recent experimental results for the CP-averaged $B_d\toπ^+π^-$ and $B_d\toπ^\mp K^\pm$ branching ratios imply a rather restricted range for the corresponding penguin parameters, and upper bounds on the direct CP asymmetries $A_{CP}^{dir}(B_d\toπ^+π^-)$ and $A_{CP}^{dir}(B_d\toπ^\mp K^\pm)$. Moreover, we point out that interesting constraints on $γ$ can be obtained from the CP-averaged $B_d\toπ^+π^-$ and $B_d\toπ^\mp K^\pm$ branching ratios, if in addition mixing-induced CP violation in the former decay is measured, and the $B^0_d$--$\bar{B^0_d}$ mixing phase is fixed through $B_d\to J/ψK_S$. An extraction of $γ$ becomes possible, if furthermore direct CP violation in $B_d\toπ^+π^-$ or $B_d\toπ^\mp K^\pm$ is observed.

An Analysis of B_s Decays in the Left-Right-Symmetric Model with Spontaneous CP Violation

Non-leptonic B_s decays into CP eigenstates that are caused by \bar b -> \bar cc\bar s quark-level transitions, such as B_s -> D_s^+D^-_s, J/psi eta^(') or J/psi phi, provide a powerful tool to search for ``new physics'', as the CP-violating effects in these modes are tiny in the Standard Model. We explore these effects for a particular scenario of new physics, the left-right-symmetric model with spontaneous CP violation. In our analysis, we take into account all presently available experimental constraints on the parameters of this model, i.e. those implied by K- and B-decay observables; we find that CP asymmetries as large as O(40%) may arise in the B_s channels, whereas the left-right-symmetric model favours a small CP asymmetry in the ``gold-plated'' mode B_d -> J/psi K_S. Such a pattern would be in favour of B-physics experiments at hadron machines, where the B_s modes are very accessible.

Extracting $γ$ from $B_{s(d)}\to J/ψK_S$ and $B_{d(s)}\to D^{+}_{d(s)} D^{-}_{d(s)}$

A completely general parametrization of the time-dependent decay rates of the modes $B_s\to J/ψK_S$ and $B_d\to J/ψK_S$ is given, which are related to each other through the $U$-spin flavour symmetry of strong interactions. Owing to the interference of current--current and penguin processes, the $B_s\to J/ψK_S$ observables probe the angle $γ$ of the unitarity triangle. Using the $U$-spin symmetry, the overall normalization of the $B_s\to J/ψK_S$ rate can be fixed with the help of the CP-averaged $B_d\to J/ψK_{\rm S}$ rate, providing a new strategy to determine $γ$. This extraction of $γ$ is not affected by any final-state-interaction effects, and its theoretical accuracy is only limited by $U$-spin-breaking corrections. As a by-product, this strategy allows us to take into account also the penguin effects in the determination of $β$ from $B_d\to J/ψK_S$, which are presumably very small, and to predict the direct CP asymmetry arising in this mode. An analogous strategy is provided by the time-dependent $B_d\to D^+ D^-$ rate, if its overall normalization is fixed through the CP-averaged $B_s\to D^+_s D^-_s$ rate.

Extracting CKM Phases from Angular Distributions of $B_{d,s}$ Decays into Admixtures of CP Eigenstates

The time-dependent angular distributions of certain $B_{d,s}$ decays into final states that are admixtures of CP-even and CP-odd configurations provide valuable information about CKM phases and hadronic parameters. We present the general formalism to accomplish this task, taking also into account penguin contributions, and illustrate it by considering a few specific decay modes. We give particular emphasis to the decay $B_d\to J/ψρ^0$, which can be combined with $B_s\to J/ψϕ$ to extract the $B^0_d - \bar{B^0_d}$ mixing phase and - if penguin effects in the former mode should be sizeable - also the angle $γ$ of the unitarity triangle. As an interesting by-product, this strategy allows us to take into account also the penguin effects in the extraction of the $B^0_s - \bar{B^0_s}$ mixing phase from $B_s\to J/ψϕ$. Moreover, a discrete ambiguity in the extraction of the CKM angle $β$ can be resolved, and valuable insights into SU(3)-breaking effects can be obtained. Other interesting applications of the general formalism presented in this paper, involving $B_d\toρρ$ and $B_{s,d}\to K^{\ast} \bar{K^\ast}$ decays, are also briefly noted.

New Strategies to Extract $β$ and $γ$ from $B_d\to π^+ π^-$ and $B_s\to K^+ K^-$

The decays $B_d\to π^+ π^-$ and $B_s\to K^+ K^-$ are related to each other by interchanging all down and strange quarks, i.e. through the $U$-spin flavour symmetry of strong interactions. A completely general parametrization of the CP-violating observables of these modes is presented within the framework of the Standard Model, allowing the determination of the angles $β$ and $γ$ of the unitarity triangle. This strategy is affected neither by penguin contributions nor by any final-state-interaction effects, and its theoretical accuracy is only limited by $U$-spin-breaking corrections. If the $B^0_d - \bar{B^0_d}$ mixing phase $2β$ is determined separately, for example with the help of $B_d\to J/ψK_S$, $γ$ can be extracted with a reduced $U$-spin flavour symmetry input. A variant of this strategy to determine $γ$, which uses $B_d\toπ^\mp K^\pm$ instead of $B_s\to K^+ K^-$ and relies -- in addition to the SU(3) flavour symmetry -- on a certain dynamical assumption, is also briefly discussed.

A General Analysis of $γ$ Determinations from $B\toπK$ Decays

We present a general parametrization of $B^\pm\toπ^\pm K, π^0K^\pm$ and $B_d\toπ^0 K, π^\mp K^\pm$ decays, taking into account both electroweak penguin and rescattering effects. This formalism allows -- among other things -- an improved implementation of the strategies that were recently proposed by Neubert and Rosner to probe the CKM angle $γ$ with the help of $B^\pm\toπ^\pm K, π^0K^\pm$ decays. In particular, it allows us to investigate the sensitivity of the extracted value of $γ$ to the basic assumptions of their approach. We find that certain SU(3)-breaking effects may have an important impact and emphasize that additional hadronic uncertainties are due to rescattering processes. The latter can be controlled by using SU(3) flavour symmetry arguments and additional experimental information provided by $B^\pm\to K^\pm K$ modes. We propose a new strategy to probe the angle $γ$ with the help of the neutral decays $B_d\toπ^0 K, π^\mp K^\pm$, which is theoretically cleaner than the $B^\pm\toπ^\pm K, π^0K^\pm$ approach. Here rescattering processes can be taken into account by just measuring the CP-violating observables of the decay $B_d\toπ^0K_{\rm S}$. Finally, we point out that an experimental analysis of $B_s\to K^+K^-$ modes would also be very useful to probe the CKM angle $γ$, as well as electroweak penguins, and we critically compare the virtues and weaknesses of the various approaches discussed in this paper. As a by-product, we point out a strategy to include the electroweak penguins in the determination of the CKM angle $α$ from $B\toππ$ decays.

Controlling Rescattering Effects in Constraints on the CKM Angle $γ$ arising from $B\toπK$ Decays

It has recently been pointed out that the observables of the decay $B^+\to K^+\bar{K^0}$ and its charge conjugate allow us to take into account rescattering effects in constraints on the CKM angle $γ$ arising from $B^\pm\toπ^\pm K$ and $B_d\toπ^\pm K^\pm$ modes, and that they play an important role to obtain insights into final-state interactions. In this paper, the formalism needed to accomplish this task is discussed in detail. Furthermore, using a transparent model to describe the rescattering processes, as well as electroweak penguins, we calculate the quantities parametrizing the $B^+\toπ^+ K^0$ and $B_d^0\toπ^- K^+$ decay amplitudes for specific examples, and illustrate the constraints on $γ$ arising from the corresponding observables. Although this model is very crude, it shows nicely the power of $B^\pm\to K^\pm K$ both to include the rescattering effects in the bounds on $γ$ and to obtain insights into final-state interactions. Moreover this model exhibits the interesting feature that the combined branching ratio BR$(B^\pm\to K^\pm K)$ may be considerably enhanced through rescattering processes, as was recently pointed out within a general framework.

Extracting CKM Phases and $B_s - \bar{B}_s$ Mixing Parameters from Angular Distributions of Non-Leptonic B Decays

Suggestions for efficiently determining the lifetimes and mass difference of the light and heavy $B_s$ mesons ($B_s^L, B_s^H$) from $B_s \to J/ ψϕ, D_s^{*+}D_s^{*-}$ decays are given. Using appropriate weighting functions for the angular distributions of the decay products (moment analysis), one can extract $(Γ_H, Γ_L, Δm)_{B_s}$. Such a moment analysis allows the determination of the relative magnitudes and phases of the CP-odd and CP-even decay amplitudes. Efficient determinations of CP-violating effects occuring in $B_s \to J/ψϕ, D_s^{*+} D_s^{*-}$ are discussed in the light of a possible width difference $(ΔΓ)_{B_s}$, and the utility of this method for $B \to J/ψK^*, D^{\ast +}_s \bar D^{\ast}$ decays is noted. Since our approach is very general, it can in principle be applied to all kinds of angular distributions and allows the determination of all relevant observables, including fundamental CKM (Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa) parameters, as well as tests of various aspects of the factorization hypothesis. Explicit angular distributions and weighting functions are given, and the general method that can be used for any angular distribution is indicated.

Probing the CKM Angle $γ$ with $B\toπK$ Decays

The decays $B^\pm\to π^\pm K$ and $B_d\to π^\mp K^\pm$ were observed by the CLEO collaboration last year; they may play an important role to probe the angle $γ$ of the unitarity triangle of the CKM matrix. After a general parametrization of their decay amplitudes within the Standard Model, strategies to constrain and determine the CKM angle $γ$ with the help of the corresponding CP-conserving and CP-violating observables are briefly reviewed. The theoretical accuracy of these methods is limited by certain rescattering and electroweak penguin effects. It is emphasized that the rescattering processes can be included in the bounds on $γ$ by using additional experimental information on $B^\pm\to K^\pm K$ decays, and steps towards the control of electroweak penguins are pointed out.

Rescattering and Electroweak Penguin Effects in Strategies to Constrain and Determine the CKM Angle $γ$ from $B\toπK$ Decays

A general parametrization of the $B^+\toπ^+ K^0$ and $B_d^0\toπ^- K^+$ decay amplitudes is presented. It relies only on the isospin symmetry of strong interactions and the phase structure of the Standard Model and involves no approximations. In particular, this parametrization takes into account both rescattering and electroweak penguin effects, which limit the theoretical accuracy of bounds on $γ$ arising from the combined $B^\pm\toπ^\pm K$, $B_d\toπ^\mp K^\pm$ branching ratios. Generalized bounds making also use of the CP asymmetry in the latter decay are derived, and their sensitivity to possible rescattering and electroweak penguin effects is investigated. It is pointed out that experimental data on $B^\pm\to K^\pm K$ allow us to include rescattering processes in these bounds completely, and an improved theoretical treatment of electroweak penguins is presented. It is argued that rescattering effects may enhance the combined $B^\pm\to K^\pm K$ branching ratio by a factor of ${\cal O}(10)$ to the $10^{-5}$ level, and that they may be responsible for the small present central value of the ratio of the combined $B_d\toπ^\mp K^\pm$ and $B^\pm\toπ^\pm K$ branching ratios, which has recently been reported by the CLEO collaboration and, if confirmed, would exclude values of $γ$ within a large region around $90^\circ$.

Towards Extractions of the CKM Angle $γ$ from $B_{u,d}\toπK$ and Untagged $B_s\to K\bar{K}$ Decays

The decays $B_d\toπ^\mp K^\pm$ and $B^\pm\toπ^\pm K$ provide interesting constraints on the angle $γ$ of the unitarity triangle of the CKM matrix. It is shown that bounds on $γ$ can also be obtained from the time evolution of untagged $B_s\to K^+K^-$ and $B_s\to K^0\bar{K^0}$ decays, provided the $B_s$ system exhibits a sizeable width difference $ΔΓ_s$. A detailed discussion of rescattering processes and electroweak penguin effects, which limit the theoretical accuracy of these constraints, and of methods to control them through experimental data is given. Moreover, strategies are pointed out to go beyond these bounds by relating the $B_{u,d}\toπK$ and untagged $B_s\to K\bar{K}$ decays through the SU(3) flavour symmetry of strong interactions. If a tagged, time-dependent measurement of the $B_s\to K^+K^-$ and $B_s\to K^0\bar{K^0}$ modes should become possible, $γ$ could be determined from the corresponding observables in a way that makes use of only the SU(2) isospin symmetry and takes into account rescattering effects ``automatically''. The impact of new-physics contributions to $B^0_s - \bar{B^0_s}$ mixing is also analysed, and interesting features arising in such a scenario of physics beyond the Standard Model are pointed out.

Constraining the CKM angle $γ$ and penguin contributions through combined $B \to πK$ branching ratios

Motivated by recent CLEO measurements of $B\toπK$ modes, we investigate their implications for the CKM angle $γ$ and a consistent description of these decays within the Standard Model. Interestingly it turns out that already the measurement of the combined branching ratios $B^\pm\toπ^\pm K$ and $B_d\toπ^\mp K^\pm$ allows to derive stringent constraints on $γ$ which are complementary to the presently allowed range for that angle. This range, arising from the usual fits of the unitarity triangle, is typically symmetric around $γ= 90^\circ$, while our method can in principle exclude a range of this kind. Consistency within the Standard Model implies furthermore bounds on the ratio $r\equiv|T'|/|\tilde P|$ of the current-current and penguin operator contributions to $B_d\toπ^\mp K^\pm$, and upper limits for the CP-violating asymmetry arising in that decay. Commonly accepted means to estimate $r$ yield values at the edge of compatibility with the present CLEO measurements.

CP Violation in $B_s$ Decays

CP-violating effects in non-leptonic $B_s$-meson decays are reviewed. Special emphasis is given to implications arising from the width difference $ΔΓ_s$ between the $B_s$ mass eigenstates. If $ΔΓ_s$ is found to be sizable, certain untagged $B_s$-meson decays may allow interesting probes of CP violation, extractions of the CKM angle $γ$ and the Wolfenstein parameter $η$, and may indicate physics beyond the Standard Model.

Quark mixing, CP violation and rare decays after the top quark discovery

We review the highlights of quark mixing, particle-antiparticle mixing, CP violation and rare K- and B-decays in the Standard Model. The top quark discovery, the precise measurement of its mass, the improved knowledge of the couplings $V_{cb}$ and $V_{ub}$, and the calculations of NLO short distance QCD corrections improved considerably the predictions for various decay rates, the determination of the couplings $V_{td}$ and $V_{ts}$ and of the complex phase in the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix. After presenting the general theoretical framework for weak decays, we discuss the following topics in detail: i) the CKM matrix, its most convenient parametrizations and the unitarity triangle, ii) the CP-violating parameter $ε_K$ and $B^0_{d,s}-\bar B^0_{d,s}$ mixings, iii) the ratio $ε'/ε$, iv) the rare K-decays $K_L\toπ^0e^+e^-$, $K^+\toπ^+ν\barν$, $K_L\toπ^0ν\barν$ and $K_L\toμ^+μ^-$, v) the radiative decays $B\to X_sγ$ and $B\to X_s l^+l^-$, vi) the rare B-decays $B\to X_{s,d}ν\barν$ and $B_{d,s}\to l^+l^-$, vii) CP violation in neutral and charged B-decays putting emphasis on clean determinations of the angles of the unitarity triangle, and viii) the role of electroweak penguins in B-decays. We present several future visions demonstrating very clearly the great potential of CP asymmetries in B-decays and of clean K-decays such as $K^+\toπ^+ν\barν$ and $K_L\toπ^0ν\barν$ in the determination of the CKM parameters and in decisive testing of the Standard Model. An outlook for the coming years ends our review.

CP Violation and the Role of Electroweak Penguins in Non-leptonic B Decays

The phenomenon of CP violation in the B system and strategies for extracting CKM phases are reviewed. We focus both on general aspects and on some recent developments including CP-violating asymmetries in B_d decays, the B_s system in light of a possible width difference $ΔΓ_s$, charged B decays, and SU(3) relations among certain transition amplitudes. In order to describe the relevant non-leptonic B decays, low energy effective Hamiltonians calculated beyond the leading logarithmic approximation are used. Special emphasis is given to the role of electroweak penguin operators in such transitions. These effects are analyzed both within a general framework and more specifically in view of the theoretical cleanliness of methods to determine CKM phases. Strategies for obtaining insights into the world of electroweak penguins are discussed.

A Determination of the CKM-angle $α$ using Mixing-induced CP Violation in the Decays $B_d\toπ^+π^-$ and $B_d\to K^0 \bar K^0$

We present a method of determining the CKM-angle $α$ by performing simultaneous measurements of the mixing-induced CP asymmetries of the decays $B_d\toπ^+π^-$ and $B_d\to K^0\bar K^0$. The accuracy of our approach is limited by $SU(3)$-breaking effects originating from $\bar b\to \bar ds\bar s$ QCD-penguin diagrams. Using plausible power-counting arguments we show that these uncertainties are expected to be of the same order as those arising through electroweak penguins in the standard Gronau-London-method in which $α$ is extracted by means of isospin relations among $B\toππ$ decay amplitudes. Therefore our approach, which does not involve the experimentally difficult mode $B_d\toπ^0π^0$ and is essentially unaffected by electroweak penguins, may be an interesting alternative to determine $α$.

Strategies for Fixing the CKM-angle $γ$ and Obtaining Experimental Insights into the World of Electroweak Penguins

Using the $SU(3)$ flavour symmetry of strong interactions, we propose strategies for extracting both the CKM-angle $γ$ and the $\bar b\to\bar uu\bar s$ tree-level amplitude $T'$. We present also an approximate approach using the branching ratios for the modes $B^+\toπ^+ K^0$, $B^0_d\toπ^- K^+$, $\bar B^0_d\toπ^+ K^-$ and $B^+\toπ^+π^0$ which should be rather promising from the experimental point of view. The quantities $γ$ and $T'$ determined this way may well be used as an input to control electroweak penguins in nonleptonic $B$-decays as has been discussed in previous work. Following these lines, we propose strategies for obtaining quantitative insights into the physics of the electroweak penguin operators and performing some consistency checks. As a by-product, we derive an upper bound of $6^\circ$ for the uncertainty originating from electroweak penguins in the $α$-determination by means of $B\toππ$ decays.
