Estimating rBDπr_{B}^{Dπ} as an input to the determination of the CKM angle γγ

The interference between Cabibbo-favoured and Cabibbo-suppressed B→DπB\to Dπ decay amplitudes provides sensitivity to the CKM angle γγ. The relative size of the interfering amplitudes is an important ingredient in the determination of γγ. Using branching fractions from various B→DhB\to Dh decays, and the measured value for rBDKr_{B}^{DK}, the magnitude of the amplitude ratio of B+→D0π+B^+\to D^0π^+ and B+→Dˉ0π+B^+\to \bar{D}^0π^+ decays is estimated to be rBDπ=0.0053±0.0007r_{B}^{Dπ} = 0.0053 \pm 0.0007.

Anatomy of B→DDˉB\rightarrow D\bar{D} Decays

The decays Bd0→Dd−Dd+B_d^0\rightarrow D_d^-D_d^+ and Bs0→Ds−Ds+B_s^0\rightarrow D_s^-D_s^+ probe the CP-violating mixing phases ϕdϕ_d and ϕsϕ_s, respectively. The theoretical uncertainty of the corresponding determinations is limited by contributions from penguin topologies, which can be included with the help of the UU-spin symmetry of the strong interaction. We analyse the currently available data for Bd,s0→Dd,s−Dd,s+B^0_{d,s}\rightarrow D_{d,s}^-D_{d,s}^+ decays and those with similar dynamics to constrain the involved non-perturbative parameters. Using further information from semileptonic Bd0→Dd−ℓ+νℓB_d^0\rightarrow D_d^-\ell^+ν_{\ell} decays, we perform a test of the factorisation approximation and take non-factorisable SU(3)SU(3)-breaking corrections into account. The branching ratios of the Bd0→Dd−Dd+B_d^0\rightarrow D_d^-D_d^+, Bs0→Ds−Dd+B_s^0\rightarrow D_s^-D_d^+ and Bs0→Ds−Ds+B_s^0\rightarrow D_s^-D_s^+, Bd0→Dd−Ds+B_d^0\rightarrow D_d^-D_s^+ decays show an interesting pattern which can be accommodated through significantly enhanced exchange and penguin annihilation topologies. This feature is also supported by data for the Bs0→Dd−Dd+B_s^0\rightarrow D_d^-D_d^+ channel. Moreover, there are indications of potentially enhanced penguin contributions in the Bd0→Dd−Dd+B_d^0\rightarrow D_d^-D_d^+ and Bs0→Ds−Ds+B_s^0\rightarrow D_s^-D_s^+ decays, which would make it mandatory to control these effects in the future measurements of ϕdϕ_d and ϕsϕ_s. We discuss scenarios for high-precision measurements in the era of Belle II and the LHCb upgrade.

Branching Ratio Measurements of BsB_s Decays

We have just entered an era of precision measurements for BsB_s-decay observables. A characteristic feature of the BsB_s-meson system is Bs0B^0_s--Bˉs0\bar B^0_s mixing, which exhibits a sizable decay width difference. The latter feature leads to a subtle complication for the extraction of branching ratios of BsB_s decays from untagged data samples, leading to systematic biases as large as O(10%) that depend on the dynamics of the considered decay. We point out that this effect can only be corrected for using information from a time-dependent analysis and suggest the use of the effective BsB_s decay lifetime, which can already be extracted from the untagged data sample, for this purpose. We also address several experimental issues that can play a role in the extraction of effective lifetimes at a hadron collider, and advocate the use of the BsB_s branching ratios, as presented in this note, for consistent comparisons of theoretical calculations and experimental measurements in particle listings.

Exploring Bs→Ds(∗)±K∓B_s \to D_s^{(*)\pm} K^\mp Decays in the Presence of a Sizable Width Difference ΔΓsΔΓ_s

The Bs→Ds(∗)±K∓B_s \to D_s^{(*)\pm} K^\mp decays allow a theoretically clean determination of ϕs+γϕ_s+γ, where ϕsϕ_s is the Bs0B^0_s-Bˉs0\bar B^0_s mixing phase and γγ the usual angle of the unitarity triangle. A sizable BsB_s decay width difference ΔΓsΔΓ_s was recently established, which leads to subtleties in analyses of the Bs→Ds(∗)±K∓B_s \to D_s^{(*)\pm} K^\mp branching ratios but also offers new "untagged" observables, which do not require a distinction between initially present Bs0B^0_s or Bˉs0\bar B^0_s mesons. We clarify these effects and address recent measurements of the ratio of the Bs→Ds±K∓B_s\to D_s^\pm K^\mp, Bs→Ds±π∓B_s\to D_s^\pmπ^\mp branching ratios. In anticipation of future LHCb analyses, we apply the SU(3) flavour symmetry of strong interactions to convert the BB-factory data for Bd→D(∗)±π∓B_d\to D^{(*)\pm}π^\mp, Bd→Ds±π∓B_d\to D_s^{\pm}π^\mp decays into predictions of the Bs→Ds(∗)±K∓B_s \to D_s^{(*)\pm} K^\mp observables, and discuss strategies for the extraction of ϕs+γϕ_s+γ, with a special focus on untagged observables and the resolution of discrete ambiguities. Using our theoretical predictions as a guideline, we make simulations to estimate experimental sensitivities, and extrapolate to the end of the planned LHCb upgrade. We find that the interplay between the untagged observables, which are accessible thanks to the sizable ΔΓsΔΓ_s, and the mixing-induced CP asymmetries, which require tagging, will play the key role for the experimental determination of ϕs+γϕ_s+γ.

Probing New Physics via the Bs0→μ+μ−B^0_s\to μ^+μ^- Effective Lifetime

We have recently seen new upper bounds for Bs0→μ+μ−B^0_s\to μ^+μ^-, a key decay to search for physics beyond the Standard Model. Furthermore a non-vanishing decay width difference ΔΓsΔΓ_s of the BsB_s system has been measured. We show that ΔΓsΔΓ_s affects the extraction of the Bs0→μ+μ−B^0_s\to μ^+μ^- branching ratio and the resulting constraints on the New Physics parameter space, and give formulae for including this effect. Moreover, we point out that ΔΓsΔΓ_s provides a new observable, the effective Bs0→μ+μ−B^0_s\to μ^+μ^- lifetime τμ+μ−τ_{μ^+μ^-}, which offers a theoretically clean probe for New Physics searches that is complementary to the branching ratio. Should the Bs0→μ+μ−B^0_s\to μ^+μ^- branching ratio agree with the Standard Model, the measurement of τμ+μ−τ_{μ^+μ^-}, which appears feasible at upgrades of the LHC experiments, may still reveal large New Physics effects.

Tests of Factorization and SU(3) Relations in B Decays into Heavy-Light Final States

Using data from the B factories and the Tevatron, we perform tests of how well non-leptonic B decays of the kind B -> D^{(*)}_{(s)} P, where P is a pion or kaon, are described within the factorization framework. We find that factorization works well - as is theoretically expected - for color-allowed, tree-diagram-like topologies. Moreover, also exchange topologies, which have a non-factorizable character, do not show any anomalous behavior. We discuss also isospin triangles between the B -> D^{(*)} pi decay amplitudes, and determine the corresponding amplitudes in the complex plane, which show a significant enhancement of the color-suppressed tree contribution with respect to the factorization picture. Using data for B -> D^{(*)} K decays, we determine SU(3)-breaking effects and cannot resolve any non-factorizable SU(3)-breaking corrections larger than \sim 5%. In view of these results, we point out that a comparison between the \bar B^0_d -> D^+π^- and \bar B^0_s -> D_s^+π^- decays offers an interesting new determination of f_d/f_s. Using CDF data, we obtain the most precise value of this ratio at CDF, and discuss the prospects for a corresponding measurement at LHCb.

New Strategy for B_s Branching Ratio Measurements and the Search for New Physics in B^0_s -> mu^+ mu^-

The LHCb experiment at CERN's Large Hadron Collider will soon allow us to enter a new era in the exploration of B_s decays. A particularly promising channel for the search of "new physics" is B^0_s -> mu^+ mu^-. The systematic key uncertainty affecting the measurement of this -- and in fact all B_s-decay branching ratios -- is the ratio of fragmentation functions f_d/f_s. As the presently available methods for determining f_d/f_s are not sufficient to meet the high precision at LHCb, we propose a new strategy using \bar B^0_s -> D_s^+ pi^- and \bar B^0_d -> D^+ K^-. It allows us to obtain a lower experimental bound on BR(B^0_s -> mu^+ mu^-) which offers a powerful probe for new physics. In order to go beyond this bound and to determine f_d/f_s with a theoretical precision matching the experimental one it is sufficient to know the SU(3)-breaking correction to a form-factor ratio from non-perturbative methods at the level of 20%. Thanks to our strategy, we can detect new physics in B^0_s -> mu^+ mu^- at LHCb with 5 sigma for a branching ratio as small as twice the Standard-Model value, which represents an improvement of the new-physics reach by about a factor of two with respect to the current LHCb expectation.
