$L_\infty$-algebra of braided electrodynamics

Using the recently developed formalism of braided noncommutative field theory, we construct an explicit example of braided electrodynamics, that is, a noncommutative $U(1)$ gauge theory coupled to a Dirac fermion. We construct the braided $L_\infty$-algebra of this field theory and apply the formalism to obtain the braided equations of motion, action functional and conserved matter current. The braided deformation leads to a modification of the charge conservation. Finally, the Feynman integral appearing in the one-loop contribution to the vacuum polarization diagram is calculated. There are no non-planar diagrams, but the UV/IR mixing appears nevertheless. We comment on this unexpected result.

Braided Symmetries in Noncommutative Field Theory

We give a pedagogical introduction to $L_\infty$-algebras and their uses in organising the symmetries and dynamics of classical field theories, as well as of the conventional noncommutative gauge theories that arise as low-energy effective field theories in string theory. We review recent developments which formulate field theories with braided gauge symmetries as a new means of overcoming several obstacles in the standard noncommutative theories, such as the restrictions on gauge algebras and matter fields. These theories can be constructed by using techniques from Drinfel'd twist deformation theory, which we review in some detail, and their symmetries and dynamics are controlled by a new homotopy algebraic structure called a 'braided $L_\infty$-algebra'. We expand and elaborate on several novel theoretical issues surrounding these constructions, and present three new explicit examples: the standard noncommutative scalar field theory (regarded as a braided field theory), a braided version of $BF$ theory in arbitrary dimensions (regarded as a higher gauge theory), and a new braided version of noncommutative Yang-Mills theory for arbitrary gauge algebras.

D-Branes in Para-Hermitian Geometries

We introduce T-duality invariant versions of D-branes in doubled geometry using a global covariant framework based on para-Hermitian geometry and metric algebroids. We define D-branes as conformal boundary conditions for the open string version of the Born sigma-model, where they are given by maximally isotropic vector bundles which do not generally admit the standard geometric picture in terms of submanifolds. When reduced to the conventional sigma-model description of a physical string background as the leaf space of a foliated para-Hermitian manifold, integrable branes yield D-branes as leaves of foliations which are interpreted as Dirac structures on the physical spacetime. We define a notion of generalised para-complex D-brane, which realises our D-branes as para-complex versions of topological A/B-branes. We illustrate how our formalism recovers standard D-branes in the explicit example of reductions from doubled nilmanifolds.

Symplectic embeddings, homotopy algebras and almost Poisson gauge symmetry

We formulate general definitions of semi-classical gauge transformations for noncommutative gauge theories in general backgrounds of string theory, and give novel explicit constructions using techniques based on symplectic embeddings of almost Poisson structures. In the absence of fluxes the gauge symmetries close a Poisson gauge algebra and their action is governed by a $P_\infty$-algebra which we construct explicitly from the symplectic embedding. In curved backgrounds they close a field dependent gauge algebra governed by an $L_\infty$-algebra which is not a $P_\infty$-algebra. Our technique produces new all orders constructions which are significantly simpler compared to previous approaches, and we illustrate its applicability in several examples of interest in noncommutative field theory and gravity. We further show that our symplectic embeddings naturally define a $P_\infty$-structure on the exterior algebra of differential forms on a generic almost Poisson manifold, which generalizes earlier constructions of differential graded Poisson algebras, and suggests a new approach to defining noncommutative gauge theories beyond the gauge sector and the semi-classical limit based on $A_\infty$-algebras.

The $L_{\infty}$-structure of noncommutative gravity

We summarise recent perspectives on symmetries of noncommutative field theories based on homotopy algebras. We show how these viewpoints naturally lead to a new class of noncommutative field theories which possess braided gauge symmetries, and explain in detail their uses in gravity. We review how these considerations lead to a new theory of noncommutative gravity in four dimensions within the Einstein-Cartan-Palatini formalism.

A geometric recipe for twisted superpotentials

We give a pedagogical introduction to spectral networks and abelianization, as well as their relevance to $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric field theories in four dimensions. Motivated by a conjecture of Nekrasov-Rosly-Shatashvili, we detail a geometric recipe for computing the effective twisted superpotential for $\mathcal{N}=2$ field theories of class $\mathcal{S}$ as a generating function of the brane of opers, with respect to the spectral coordinates found from abelianization. We present two new examples, the simplest Argyres-Douglas theory and the pure $SU(2)$ gauge theory, while we conjecture the $ε$-expansion of the effective twisted superpotential for the $E_6$ Minahan-Nemeschansky theory.

Algebroids, AKSZ Constructions and Doubled Geometry

We give a self-contained survey of some approaches aimed at a global description of the geometry underlying double field theory. After reviewing the geometry of Courant algebroids and their incarnations in the AKSZ construction, we develop the theory of metric algebroids including their graded geometry. We use metric algebroids to give a global description of doubled geometry, incorporating the section constraint, as well as an AKSZ-type construction of topological doubled sigma-models. When these notions are combined with ingredients of para-Hermitian geometry, we demonstrate how they reproduce kinematical features of double field theory from a global perspective, including solutions of the section constraint for Riemannian foliated doubled manifolds, as well as a natural notion of generalized T-duality for polarized doubled manifolds. We describe the $L_\infty$-algebras of symmetries of a doubled geometry, and briefly discuss other proposals for global doubled geometry in the literature.

Topological T-Duality for Twisted Tori

We apply the $C^*$-algebraic formalism of topological T-duality due to Mathai and Rosenberg to a broad class of topological spaces that include the torus bundles appearing in string theory compactifications with duality twists, such as nilmanifolds, as well as many other examples. We develop a simple procedure in this setting for constructing the T-duals starting from a commutative $C^*$-algebra with an action of ${\mathbb R}^n$. We treat the general class of almost abelian solvmanifolds in arbitrary dimension in detail, where we provide necessary and sufficient criteria for the existence of classical T-duals in terms of purely group theoretic data, and compute them explicitly as continuous-trace algebras with non-trivial Dixmier-Douady classes. We prove that any such solvmanifold has a topological T-dual given by a $C^*$-algebra bundle of noncommutative tori, which we also compute explicitly. The monodromy of the original torus bundle becomes a Morita equivalence among the fiber algebras, so that these $C^*$-algebras rigorously describe the T-folds from non-geometric string theory.

Five-dimensional cohomological localization and squashed $q$-deformations of two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory

We revisit the duality between five-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories and deformations of two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory from a new perspective. We give a unified treatment of supersymmetric gauge theories in three and five dimensions using cohomological localization techniques and the Atiyah-Singer index theorem. We survey various known results in a unified framework and provide simplified derivations of localization formulas, as well as various extensions including the case of irregular Seifert fibrations. We describe the reductions to four-dimensional gauge theories, and give an extensive description of the dual two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory when the three-dimensional part of the geometry is a squashed three-sphere, including its extension to non-zero area, and a detailed analysis of the resulting matrix model. The squashing parameter $b$ yields a further deformation of the usual $q$-deformation of two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory, which for rational values $b^2=p/s$ yields a new correspondence with Chern-Simons theory on lens spaces $L(p,s)$.

Homotopy Lie Algebras of Gravity and their Braided Deformations

We describe the cyclic $L_{\infty}$-algebra formulation of classical general relativity without matter fields in the Einstein-Cartan-Palatini formalism. Using Drinfel'd twist deformation techniques, we define a noncommutative version of the theory with braided gauge symmetries. We introduce a notion of braided $L_{\infty}$-algebra, and use it to encode the symmetries, field content, field equations and Noether identities of noncommutative gravity.

BRST symmetry of doubled membrane sigma-models

Courant sigma-models encode the geometric and non-geometric fluxes of compactified closed string theory as generalized Wess-Zumino terms and exhibit their relation to Courant algebroids. In recent work, we proposed a doubled membrane sigma-model that establishes the corresponding connection to double field theory and its algebroid structure. The strategy is to consider a "large" Courant sigma-model over a doubled target spacetime and identify a suitable projection that leads to a sigma-model for doubled fields. In this note, we provide further details for this construction. Starting from the BRST symmetry of the BV action that satisfies the classical master equation, we consistently project the BRST transformations of the superfields of the "large" Courant sigma-model to obtain the gauge transformations of the doubled membrane sigma-model. We show that demanding gauge invariance and the closure of gauge transformations of the worldvolume theory, leads to a condition that is in direct correspondence to the strong constraint of the target space double field theory.

Cheeger-Simons differential characters with compact support and Pontryagin duality

By adapting the Cheeger-Simons approach to differential cohomology, we establish a notion of differential cohomology with compact support. We show that it is functorial with respect to open embeddings and that it fits into a natural diagram of exact sequences which compare it to compactly supported singular cohomology and differential forms with compact support, in full analogy to ordinary differential cohomology. We prove an excision theorem for differential cohomology using a suitable relative version. Furthermore, we use our model to give an independent proof of Pontryagin duality for differential cohomology recovering a result of [Harvey, Lawson, Zweck - Amer. J. Math. 125 (2003) 791]: On any oriented manifold, ordinary differential cohomology is isomorphic to the smooth Pontryagin dual of compactly supported differential cohomology. For manifolds of finite-type, a similar result is obtained interchanging ordinary with compactly supported differential cohomology.

AGT relations for abelian quiver gauge theories on ALE spaces

We construct level one dominant representations of the affine Kac-Moody algebra $\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}}_k$ on the equivariant cohomology groups of moduli spaces of rank one framed sheaves on the orbifold compactification of the minimal resolution $X_k$ of the $A_{k-1}$ toric singularity $\mathbb{C}^2/\mathbb{Z}_k$. We show that the direct sum of the fundamental classes of these moduli spaces is a Whittaker vector for $\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}}_k$, which proves the AGT correspondence for pure $\mathcal{N}=2$ $U(1)$ gauge theory on $X_k$. We consider Carlsson-Okounkov type Ext-bundles over products of the moduli spaces and use their Euler classes to define vertex operators. Under the decomposition $\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}}_k\simeq \mathfrak{h}\oplus \widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_k$, these vertex operators decompose as products of bosonic exponentials associated to the Heisenberg algebra $\mathfrak{h}$ and primary fields of $\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_k$. We use these operators to prove the AGT correspondence for $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal abelian quiver gauge theories on $X_k$.

Chiral expansion and Macdonald deformation of two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory

We derive the analog of the large $N$ Gross-Taylor holomorphic string expansion for the refinement of $q$-deformed $U(N)$ Yang-Mills theory on a compact oriented Riemann surface. The derivation combines Schur-Weyl duality for quantum groups with the Etingof-Kirillov theory of generalized quantum characters which are related to Macdonald polynomials. In the unrefined limit we reproduce the chiral expansion of $q$-deformed Yang-Mills theory derived by de Haro, Ramgoolam and Torrielli. In the classical limit $q=1$, the expansion defines a new $β$-deformation of Hurwitz theory wherein the refined partition function is a generating function for certain parameterized Euler characters, which reduce in the unrefined limit $β=1$ to the orbifold Euler characteristics of Hurwitz spaces of holomorphic maps. We discuss the geometrical meaning of our expansions in relation to quantum spectral curves and $β$-ensembles of matrix models arising in refined topological string theory.

Nonassociative geometry in quasi-Hopf representation categories II: Connections and curvature

We continue our systematic development of noncommutative and nonassociative differential geometry internal to the representation category of a quasitriangular quasi-Hopf algebra. We describe derivations, differential operators, differential calculi and connections using universal categorical constructions to capture algebraic properties such as Leibniz rules. Our main result is the construction of morphisms which provide prescriptions for lifting connections to tensor products and to internal homomorphisms. We describe the curvatures of connections within our formalism, and also the formulation of Einstein-Cartan geometry as a putative framework for a nonassociative theory of gravity.

Sasakian quiver gauge theories and instantons on Calabi-Yau cones

We consider SU(2)-equivariant dimensional reduction of Yang-Mills theory on manifolds of the form $M\times S^3/Γ$, where $M$ is a smooth manifold and $S^3/Γ$ is a three-dimensional Sasaki-Einstein orbifold. We obtain new quiver gauge theories on $M$ whose quiver bundles are based on the affine ADE Dynkin diagram associated to $Γ$. We relate them to those arising through translationally-invariant dimensional reduction over the associated Calabi-Yau cones $C(S^3/Γ)$ which are based on McKay quivers and ADHM matrix models, and to those arising through SU(2)-equivariant dimensional reduction over the leaf spaces of the characteristic foliations of $S^3/Γ$ which are Kähler orbifolds of $\mathbb{C} P^1$ whose quiver bundles are based on the unextended Dynkin diagram corresponding to $Γ$. We use Nahm equations to describe the vacua of SU(2)-equivariant quiver gauge theories on the cones as moduli spaces of spherically symmetric instantons. We relate them to the Nakajima quiver varieties which can be realized as Higgs branches of the worldvolume quiver gauge theories on D$p$-branes probing D$(p+4)$-branes which wrap an ALE space, and to the moduli spaces of spherically symmetric solutions in putative non-abelian generalizations of two-dimensional affine Toda field theories.

Sasakian quiver gauge theories and instantons on the conifold

We consider Spin(4)-equivariant dimensional reduction of Yang-Mills theory on manifolds of the form $M^d \times T^{1,1}$, where $M^d$ is a smooth manifold and $T^{1,1}$ is a five-dimensional Sasaki-Einstein manifold Spin(4)/U(1). We obtain new quiver gauge theories on $M^d$ extending those induced via reduction over the leaf spaces $\mathbb{C}P^1 \times \mathbb{C}P^1$ in $T^{1,1}$. We describe the Higgs branches of these quiver gauge theories as moduli spaces of Spin(4)-equivariant instantons on the conifold which is realized as the metric cone over $T^{1,1}$. We give an explicit construction of these moduli spaces as Kähler quotients.

Working with Nonassociative Geometry and Field Theory

We review aspects of our formalism for differential geometry on noncommutative and nonassociative spaces which arise from cochain twist deformation quantization of manifolds. We work in the simplest setting of trivial vector bundles and flush out the details of our approach providing explicit expressions for all bimodule operations, and for connections and curvature. As applications, we describe the constructions of physically viable action functionals for Yang-Mills theory and Einstein-Cartan gravity on noncommutative and nonassociative spaces, as first steps towards more elaborate models relevant to non-geometric flux deformations of geometry in closed string theory.

Framed sheaves on root stacks and supersymmetric gauge theories on ALE spaces

We develop a new approach to the study of supersymmetric gauge theories on ALE spaces using the theory of framed sheaves on root toric stacks, which illuminates relations with gauge theories on $\mathbb{R}^4$ and with two-dimensional conformal field theory. We construct a stacky compactification of the minimal resolution $X_k$ of the $A_{k-1}$ toric singularity $\mathbb{C}^2/\mathbb{Z}_k$, which is a projective toric orbifold $\mathscr{X}_k$ such that $\mathscr{X}_k\setminus X_k$ is a $\mathbb{Z}_k$-gerbe. We construct moduli spaces of torsion free sheaves on $\mathscr{X}_k$ which are framed along the compactification gerbe. We prove that this moduli space is a smooth quasi-projective variety, compute its dimension, and classify its fixed points under the natural induced toric action. We use this construction to compute the partition functions and correlators of chiral BPS operators for $\mathcal{N}=2$ quiver gauge theories on $X_k$ with nontrivial holonomies at infinity. The partition functions are computed with and without couplings to bifundamental matter hypermultiplets and expressed in terms of toric blowup formulas, which relate them to the corresponding Nekrasov partition functions on the affine toric subsets of $X_k$. We compare our new partition functions with previous computations, explore their connections to the representation theory of affine Lie algebras, and find new constraints on fractional instanton charges in the coupling to fundamental matter. We show that the partition functions in the low energy limit are characterised by the Seiberg-Witten curves, and in some cases also by suitable blowup equations involving Riemann theta-functions on the Seiberg-Witten curve with characteristics related to the nontrivial holonomies.

Homotopy colimits and global observables in Abelian gauge theory

We study chain complexes of field configurations and observables for Abelian gauge theory on contractible manifolds, and show that they can be extended to non-contractible manifolds by using techniques from homotopy theory. The extension prescription yields functors from a category of manifolds to suitable categories of chain complexes. The extended functors properly describe the global field and observable content of Abelian gauge theory, while the original gauge field configurations and observables on contractible manifolds are recovered up to a natural weak equivalence.

N=2 gauge theories, instanton moduli spaces and geometric representation theory

We survey some of the AGT relations between N=2 gauge theories in four dimensions and geometric representations of symmetry algebras of two-dimensional conformal field theory on the equivariant cohomology of their instanton moduli spaces. We treat the cases of gauge theories on both flat space and ALE spaces in some detail, and with emphasis on the implications arising from embedding them into supersymmetric theories in six dimensions. Along the way we construct new toric noncommutative ALE spaces using the general theory of complex algebraic deformations of toric varieties, and indicate how to generalise the construction of instanton moduli spaces. We also compute the equivariant partition functions of topologically twisted six-dimensional Yang-Mills theory with maximal supersymmetry in a general Omega-background, and use the construction to obtain novel reductions to theories in four dimensions.

Nonassociative geometry in quasi-Hopf representation categories I: Bimodules and their internal homomorphisms

We systematically study noncommutative and nonassociative algebras A and their bimodules as algebras and bimodules internal to the representation category of a quasitriangular quasi-Hopf algebra. We enlarge the morphisms of the monoidal category of A-bimodules by internal homomorphisms, and describe explicitly their evaluation and composition morphisms. For braided commutative algebras A the full subcategory of symmetric A-bimodule objects is a braided closed monoidal category, from which we obtain an internal tensor product operation on internal homomorphisms. We describe how these structures deform under cochain twisting of the quasi-Hopf algebra, and apply the formalism to the example of deformation quantization of equivariant vector bundles over a smooth manifold. Our constructions set up the basic ingredients for the systematic development of differential geometry internal to the quasi-Hopf representation category, which will be tackled in the sequels to this paper, together with applications to models of noncommutative and nonassociative gravity such as those anticipated from non-geometric string theory.

Sasakian quiver gauge theories and instantons on cones over lens 5-spaces

We consider SU(3)-equivariant dimensional reduction of Yang-Mills theory over certain cyclic orbifolds of the 5-sphere which are Sasaki-Einstein manifolds. We obtain new quiver gauge theories extending those induced via reduction over the leaf spaces of the characteristic foliation of the Sasaki-Einstein structure, which are projective planes. We describe the Higgs branches of these quiver gauge theories as moduli spaces of spherically symmetric instantons which are SU(3)-equivariant solutions to the Hermitian Yang-Mills equations on the associated Calabi-Yau cones, and further compare them to moduli spaces of translationally-invariant instantons on the cones. We provide an explicit unified construction of these moduli spaces as Kähler quotients and show that they have the same cyclic orbifold singularities as the cones over the lens 5-spaces.

Stratified Fiber Bundles, Quinn Homology and Brane Stability of Hyperbolic Orbifolds

We revisit the problem of stability of string vacua involving hyperbolic orbifolds using methods from homotopy theory and K-homology. We propose a definition of Type II string theory on such backgrounds that further carry stratified systems of fiber bundles, which generalise the more conventional orbifold and symmetric string backgrounds, together with a classification of wrapped branes by a suitable generalized homology theory. For spaces stratified fibered over hyperbolic orbifolds we use the algebraic K-theory of their fundamental groups and Quinn homology to derive criteria for brane stability in terms of an Atiyah-Hirzebruch type spectral sequence with its lift to K-homology. Stable D-branes in this setting carry stratified charges which induce new additive structures on the corresponding K-homology groups. We extend these considerations to backgrounds which support H-flux, where we use K-groups of twisted group algebras of the fundamental groups to analyse stability of locally symmetric spaces with K-amenable isometry groups, and derive stability conditions for branes wrapping the fibers of an Eilenberg-MacLane spectrum functor.

Triproducts, nonassociative star products and geometry of R-flux string compactifications

We elucidate relations between different approaches to describing the nonassociative deformations of geometry that arise in non-geometric string theory. We demonstrate how to derive configuration space triproducts exactly from nonassociative phase space star products and extend the relationship in various directions. By foliating phase space with leaves of constant momentum we obtain families of Moyal-Weyl type deformations of triproducts, and we generalize them to new triproducts of differential forms and of tensor fields. We prove that nonassociativity disappears on-shell in all instances. We also extend our considerations to the differential geometry of nonassociative phase space, and study the induced deformations of configuration space diffeomorphisms. We further develop general prescriptions for deforming configuration space geometry from the nonassociative geometry of phase space, thus paving the way to a nonassociative theory of gravity in non-geometric flux compactifications of string theory.

Covariant Quiver Gauge Theories

We consider dimensional reduction of gauge theories with arbitrary gauge group in a formalism based on equivariant principal bundles. For the classical gauge groups we clarify the relations between equivariant principal bundles and quiver bundles, and show that the reduced quiver gauge theories are all generically built on the same universal symmetry breaking pattern. The formalism enables the dimensional reduction of Chern-Simons gauge theories in arbitrary odd dimensionalities. The reduced model is a novel Chern-Simons-Higgs theory consisting of a Chern-Simons term valued in the residual gauge group plus a higher order gauge and diffeomorphism invariant coupling of Higgs fields with the gauge fields. We study the moduli spaces of solutions, which in some instances provide geometric representations of certain quiver varieties as moduli spaces of flat invariant connections. As physical applications, we consider dimensional reductions involving non-compact gauge supergroups as a means for systematically inducing novel couplings between gravity and matter. In particular, we reduce Chern-Simons supergravity to a quiver gauge theory of AdS gravity involving a non-minimal coupling to scalar Higgs fermion fields.

N=2 quiver gauge theories on A-type ALE spaces

We survey and compare recent approaches to the computation of the partition functions and correlators of chiral BPS observables in $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theories on ALE spaces based on quiver varieties and the minimal resolution $X_k$ of the $A_{k-1}$ toric singularity $\mathbb{C}^2/\mathbb{Z}_k$, in light of their recently conjectured duality with two-dimensional coset conformal field theories. We review and elucidate the rigorous constructions of gauge theories for a particular family of ALE spaces, using their relation to the cohomology of moduli spaces of framed torsion free sheaves on a suitable orbifold compactification of $X_k$. We extend these computations to generic $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal quiver gauge theories, obtaining in these instances new constraints on fractional instanton charges, a rigorous proof of the Nekrasov master formula, and new quantizations of Hitchin systems based on the underlying Seiberg-Witten geometry.

Non-Geometric Fluxes, Quasi-Hopf Twist Deformations and Nonassociative Quantum Mechanics

We analyse the symmetries underlying nonassociative deformations of geometry in non-geometric R-flux compactifications which arise via T-duality from closed strings with constant geometric fluxes. Starting from the non-abelian Lie algebra of translations and Bopp shifts in phase space, together with a suitable cochain twist, we construct the quasi-Hopf algebra of symmetries that deforms the algebra of functions and the exterior differential calculus in the phase space description of nonassociative R-space. In this setting nonassociativity is characterised by the associator 3-cocycle which controls non-coassociativity of the quasi-Hopf algebra. We use abelian 2-cocycle twists to construct maps between the dynamical nonassociative star product and a family of associative star products parametrized by constant momentum surfaces in phase space. We define a suitable integration on these nonassociative spaces and find that the usual cyclicity of associative noncommutative deformations is replaced by weaker notions of 2-cyclicity and 3-cyclicity. Using this star product quantization on phase space together with 3-cyclicity, we formulate a consistent version of nonassociative quantum mechanics, in which we calculate the expectation values of area and volume operators, and find coarse-graining of the string background due to the R-flux.

Nonassociative Field Theory on Non-Geometric Spaces

We describe quasi-Hopf twist deformations of flat closed string compactifications with non-geometric R-flux using a suitable cochain twist, and construct nonassociative deformations of fields and differential calculus. We report on our new findings in using this formalism to construct perturbative nonassociative field theories on these backgrounds. We describe the modifications to the usual classification of Feynman diagrams into planar and non-planar graphs. The example of phi(4) theory is studied in detail and the one-loop contributions to the two-point function are calculated.

Nonassociative geometry and twist deformations in non-geometric string theory

We describe nonassociative deformations of geometry probed by closed strings in non-geometric flux compactifications of string theory. We show that these non-geometric backgrounds can be geometrised through the dynamics of open membranes whose boundaries propagate in the phase space of the target space compactification, equiped with a twisted Poisson structure. The effective membrane target space is determined by the standard Courant algebroid over the target space twisted by an abelian gerbe in momentum space. Quantization of the membrane sigma-model leads to a proper quantization of the non-geometric background, which we relate to Kontsevich's formalism of global deformation quantization that constructs a noncommutative nonassociative star product on phase space. We construct Seiberg-Witten type maps between associative and nonassociative backgrounds, and show how they may realise a nonassociative deformation of gravity. We also explain how this approach is related to the quantization of certain Lie 2-algebras canonically associated to the twisted Courant algebroid, and cochain twist quantization using suitable quasi-Hopf algebras of symmetries in the phase space description of R-space which constructs a Drinfel'd twist with non-trivial 3-cocycle. We illustrate and apply our formalism to present a consistent phase space formulation of nonassociative quantum mechanics.

Topological gravity and transgression holography

We show that Poincare-invariant topological gravity in even dimensions can be formulated as a transgression field theory in one higher dimension whose gauge connections are associated to linear and nonlinear realizations of the Poincare group ISO(d-1,1). The resulting theory is a gauged WZW model whereby the transition functions relating gauge fields live in the coset ISO(d-1,1)/SO(d-1,1). The coordinate parametrizing the coset space is identified with the scalar field in the adjoint representation of the gauge group of the even-dimensional topological gravity theory. The supersymmetric extension leads to topological supergravity in two dimensions starting from a transgression field theory which is invariant under the supersymmetric extension of the Poincare group in three dimensions. We also apply this construction to a three-dimensional Chern-Simons theory of gravity which is invariant under the Maxwell algebra and obtain the corresponding WZW model.

Algebraic deformations of toric varieties I. General constructions

We construct and study noncommutative deformations of toric varieties by combining techniques from toric geometry, isospectral deformations, and noncommutative geometry in braided monoidal categories. Our approach utilizes the same fan structure of the variety but deforms the underlying embedded algebraic torus. We develop a sheaf theory using techniques from noncommutative algebraic geometry. The cases of projective varieties are studied in detail, and several explicit examples are worked out, including new noncommutative deformations of Grassmann and flag varieties. Our constructions set up the basic ingredients for thorough study of instantons on noncommutative toric varieties, which will be the subject of the sequel to this paper.

Curve counting, instantons and McKay correspondences

We survey some features of equivariant instanton partition functions of topological gauge theories on four and six dimensional toric Kahler varieties, and their geometric and algebraic counterparts in the enumerative problem of counting holomorphic curves. We discuss the relations of instanton counting to representations of affine Lie algebras in the four-dimensional case, and to Donaldson-Thomas theory for ideal sheaves on Calabi-Yau threefolds. For resolutions of toric singularities, an algebraic structure induced by a quiver determines the instanton moduli space through the McKay correspondence and its generalizations. The correspondence elucidates the realization of gauge theory partition functions as quasi-modular forms, and reformulates the computation of noncommutative Donaldson-Thomas invariants in terms of the enumeration of generalized instantons. New results include a general presentation of the partition functions on ALE spaces as affine characters, a rigorous treatment of equivariant partition functions on Hirzebruch surfaces, and a putative connection between the special McKay correspondence and instanton counting on Hirzebruch-Jung spaces.

Orbifold instantons, moment maps and Yang-Mills theory with sources

We revisit the problem of constructing instantons on ADE orbifolds R^4/Γand point out some subtle relations with the complex structure on the orbifold. We consider generalized instanton equations on R^4/Γwhich are BPS equations for the Yang-Mills equations with an external current. The relation between level sets of the moment maps in the hyper-Kaehler quotient construction of the instanton moduli space and sources in the Yang-Mills equations is discussed. We describe two types of spherically-symmetric Γ-equivariant connections on complex V-bundles over R^4/Γwhich are tailored to the way in which the orbifold group acts on the fibres. Some explicit abelian and nonabelian SU(2)-invariant solutions to the nstanton equations on the orbifold are worked out.

q-deformations of two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory: Classification, categorification and refinement

We characterise the quantum group gauge symmetries underlying q-deformations of two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory by studying their relationships with the matrix models that appear in Chern-Simons theory and six-dimensional N=2 gauge theories, together with their refinements and supersymmetric extensions. We develop uniqueness results for quantum deformations and refinements of gauge theories in two dimensions, and describe several potential analytic and geometric realisations of them. We reconstruct standard q-deformed Yang-Mills amplitudes via gluing rules in the representation category of the quantum group associated to the gauge group, whose numerical invariants are the usual characters in the Grothendieck group of the category. We apply this formalism to compute refinements of q-deformed amplitudes in terms of generalised characters, and relate them to refined Chern-Simons matrix models and generalized unitary matrix integrals in the quantum beta-ensemble which compute refined topological string amplitudes. We also describe applications of our results to gauge theories in five and seven dimensions, and to the dual superconformal field theories in four dimensions which descend from the N=(2,0) six-dimensional superconformal theory.

Reduced Chern-Simons Quiver Theories and Cohomological 3-Algebra Models

We study the BPS spectrum and vacuum moduli spaces in dimensional reductions of Chern-Simons-matter theories with N>=2 supersymmetry to zero dimensions. Our main example is a matrix model version of the ABJM theory which we relate explicitly to certain reduced 3-algebra models. We find the explicit maps from Chern-Simons quiver matrix models to dual IKKT matrix models. We address the problem of topologically twisting the ABJM matrix model, and along the way construct a new twist of the IKKT model. We construct a cohomological matrix model whose partition function localizes onto a moduli space specified by 3-algebra relations which live in the double of the conifold quiver. It computes an equivariant index enumerating framed BPS states with specified R-charges which can be expressed as a combinatorial sum over certain filtered pyramid partitions.

Refined Chern-Simons theory and (q,t)-deformed Yang-Mills theory: Semi-classical expansion and planar limit

We study the relationship between refined Chern-Simons theory on lens spaces S^3/Z_p and (q,t)-deformed Yang-Mills theory on the sphere S^2. We derive the instanton partition function of (q,t)-deformed U(N) Yang-Mills theory and describe it explicitly as an analytical continuation of the semi-classical expansion of refined Chern-Simons theory. The derivations are based on a generalization of the Weyl character formula to Macdonald polynomials. The expansion is used to formulate q-generalizations of beta-deformed matrix models for refined Chern-Simons theory, as well as conjectural formulas for the chi_y-genus of the moduli space of U(N) instantons on the surface O(-p)--->P^1 for all p which enumerate black hole microstates in refined topological string theory. We study the large N phase structures of the refined gauge theories, and match them with refined topological string theory on the resolved conifold.

Solitons and Yukawa Couplings in Nearly Kahler Flux Compactifications

We study vacuum states and symmetric fermions in equivariant dimensional reduction of Yang-Mills-Dirac theory over the six-dimensional homogeneous space SU(3)/U(1)x U(1) endowed with a family of SU(3)-structures including a nearly Kahler structure. We derive the fixed tree-level scalar potentials of the induced Yang-Mills-Higgs theory, and compute the dynamically generated gauge and Higgs boson masses as functions of the metric moduli of the coset space. We find an integrable subsector of the Higgs field theory which is governed by a sine-Gordon type model whose topological soliton solutions are determined nonperturbatively by the gauge coupling and which tunnel between families of infinitely degenerate vacua. The reduction of the Dirac action for symmetric fermions yields exactly massless chiral fermions, containing subsectors which have fixed tree-level Yukawa interactions. We compute dynamical fermion mass matrices explicitly and compare them at differents points of the moduli space, some of which support consistent heterotic flux vacua.

Supersymmetric gauge theories, Coulomb gases and Chern-Simons matrix models

We develop Coulomb gas pictures of strong and weak coupling regimes of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in five and four dimensions. By relating them to the matrix models that arise in Chern-Simons theory, we compute their free energies in the large N limit and establish relationships between the respective gauge theories. We use these correspondences to rederive the N^3 behaviour of the perturbative free energy of supersymmetric gauge theory on certain toric Sasaki-Einstein five-manifolds, and the one-loop thermal free energy of N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on a spatial three-sphere.

Algebraic deformations of toric varieties II. Noncommutative instantons

We continue our study of the noncommutative algebraic and differential geometry of a particular class of deformations of toric varieties, focusing on aspects pertinent to the construction and enumeration of noncommutative instantons on these varieties. We develop a noncommutative version of twistor theory, which introduces a new example of a noncommutative four-sphere. We develop a braided version of the ADHM construction and show that it parametrizes a certain moduli space of framed torsion free sheaves on a noncommutative projective plane. We use these constructions to explicitly build instanton gauge bundles with canonical connections on the noncommutative four-sphere that satisfy appropriate anti-selfduality equations. We construct projective moduli spaces for the torsion free sheaves and demonstrate that they are smooth. We define equivariant partition functions of these moduli spaces, finding that they coincide with the usual instanton partition functions for supersymmetric gauge theories on C^2.

Double quiver gauge theory and nearly Kahler flux compactifications

We consider G-equivariant dimensional reduction of Yang-Mills theory with torsion on manifolds of the form MxG/H where M is a smooth manifold, and G/H is a compact six-dimensional homogeneous space provided with a never integrable almost complex structure and a family of SU(3)-structures which includes a nearly Kahler structure. We establish an equivalence between G-equivariant pseudo-holomorphic vector bundles on MxG/H and new quiver bundles on M associated to the double of a quiver Q, determined by the SU(3)-structure, with relations ensuring the absence of oriented cycles in Q. When M=R^2, we describe an equivalence between G-invariant solutions of Spin(7)-instanton equations on MxG/H and solutions of new quiver vortex equations on M. It is shown that generic invariant Spin(7)-instanton configurations correspond to quivers Q that contain non-trivial oriented cycles.

Groupoid Quantization of Loop Spaces

We review the various contexts in which quantized 2-plectic manifolds are expected to appear within closed string theory and M-theory. We then discuss how the quantization of a 2-plectic manifold can be reduced to ordinary quantization of its loop space, which is a symplectic manifold. We demonstrate how the latter can be quantized using groupoids. After reviewing the necessary background, we present the groupoid quantization of the loop space of R^3 in some detail.

Groupoids, Loop Spaces and Quantization of 2-Plectic Manifolds

We describe the quantization of 2-plectic manifolds as they arise in the context of the quantum geometry of M-branes and non-geometric flux compactifications of closed string theory. We review the groupoid approach to quantizing Poisson manifolds in detail, and then extend it to the loop spaces of 2-plectic manifolds, which are naturally symplectic manifolds. In particular, we discuss the groupoid quantization of the loop spaces of R^3, T^3 and S^3, and derive some interesting implications which match physical expectations from string theory and M-theory.

Instanton counting and wall-crossing for orbifold quivers

Noncommutative Donaldson-Thomas invariants for abelian orbifold singularities can be studied via the enumeration of instanton solutions in a six-dimensional noncommutative N=2 gauge theory; this construction is based on the generalized McKay correspondence and identifies the instanton counting with the counting of framed representations of a quiver which is naturally associated to the geometry of the singularity. We extend these constructions to compute BPS partition functions for higher-rank refined and motivic noncommutative Donaldson-Thomas invariants in the Coulomb branch in terms of gauge theory variables and orbifold data. We introduce the notion of virtual instanton quiver associated with the natural symplectic charge lattice which governs the quantum wall-crossing behaviour of BPS states in this context. The McKay correspondence naturally connects our formalism with other approaches to wall-crossing based on quantum monodromy operators and cluster algebras.

Instantons and vortices on noncommutative toric varieties

We elaborate on the quantization of toric varieties by combining techniques from toric geometry, isospectral deformations and noncommutative geometry in braided monoidal categories, and the construction of instantons thereon by combining methods from noncommutative algebraic geometry and a quantised twistor theory. We classify the real structures on a toric noncommutative deformation of the Klein quadric and use this to derive a new noncommutative four-sphere which is the unique deformation compatible with the noncommutative twistor correspondence. We extend the computation of equivariant instanton partition functions to noncommutative gauge theories with both adjoint and fundamental matter fields, finding agreement with the classical results in all instances. We construct moduli spaces of noncommutative vortices from the moduli of invariant instantons, and derive corresponding equivariant partition functions which also agree with those of the classical limit.

Matrix models and stochastic growth in Donaldson-Thomas theory

We show that the partition functions which enumerate Donaldson-Thomas invariants of local toric Calabi-Yau threefolds without compact divisors can be expressed in terms of specializations of the Schur measure. We also discuss the relevance of the Hall-Littlewood and Jack measures in the context of BPS state counting and study the partition functions at arbitrary points of the Kaehler moduli space. This rewriting in terms of symmetric functions leads to a unitary one-matrix model representation for Donaldson-Thomas theory. We describe explicitly how this result is related to the unitary matrix model description of Chern-Simons gauge theory. This representation is used to show that the generating functions for Donaldson-Thomas invariants are related to tau-functions of the integrable Toda and Toeplitz lattice hierarchies. The matrix model also leads to an interpretation of Donaldson-Thomas theory in terms of non-intersecting paths in the lock-step model of vicious walkers. We further show that these generating functions can be interpreted as normalization constants of a corner growth/last-passage stochastic model.

Membrane Sigma-Models and Quantization of Non-Geometric Flux Backgrounds

We develop quantization techniques for describing the nonassociative geometry probed by closed strings in flat non-geometric R-flux backgrounds M. Starting from a suitable Courant sigma-model on an open membrane with target space M, regarded as a topological sector of closed string dynamics in R-space, we derive a twisted Poisson sigma-model on the boundary of the membrane whose target space is the cotangent bundle T^*M and whose quasi-Poisson structure coincides with those previously proposed. We argue that from the membrane perspective the path integral over multivalued closed string fields in Q-space is equivalent to integrating over open strings in R-space. The corresponding boundary correlation functions reproduce Kontsevich's deformation quantization formula for the twisted Poisson manifolds. For constant R-flux, we derive closed formulas for the corresponding nonassociative star product and its associator, and compare them with previous proposals for a 3-product of fields on R-space. We develop various versions of the Seiberg-Witten map which relate our nonassociative star products to associative ones and add fluctuations to the R-flux background. We show that the Kontsevich formula coincides with the star product obtained by quantizing the dual of a Lie 2-algebra via convolution in an integrating Lie 2-group associated to the T-dual doubled geometry, and hence clarify the relation to the twisted convolution products for topological nonassociative torus bundles. We further demonstrate how our approach leads to a consistent quantization of Nambu-Poisson 3-brackets.

Two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory, Painleve equations and the six-vertex model

We show that the chiral partition function of two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory on the sphere can be mapped to the partition function of the homogeneous six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions in the ferroelectric phase. A discrete matrix model description in both cases is given by the Meixner ensemble, leading to a representation in terms of a stochastic growth model. We show that the partition function is a particular case of the z-measure on the set of Young diagrams, yielding a unitary matrix model for chiral Yang-Mills theory on the sphere and the identification of the partition function as a tau-function of the Painleve V equation. We describe the role played by generalized non-chiral Yang-Mills theory on the sphere in relating the Meixner matrix model to the Toda chain hierarchy encompassing the integrability of the six-vertex model. We also argue that the thermodynamic behaviour of the six-vertex model in the disordered and antiferroelectric phases are captured by particular q-deformations of two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory on the sphere.

We illustrate these axioms by describing extensions of Berezin-Toeplitz quantization to produce various examples of quantum spaces of relevance to the dynamics of M-branes, such as fuzzy spheres in diverse dimensions. We briefly describe preliminary steps towards making the notion of quantized 2-plectic manifolds rigorous by extending the groupoid approach to quantization of symplectic manifolds.

Crystals, instantons and quantum toric geometry

We describe the statistical mechanics of a melting crystal in three dimensions and its relation to a diverse range of models arising in combinatorics, algebraic geometry, integrable systems, low-dimensional gauge theories, topological string theory and quantum gravity. Its partition function can be computed by enumerating the contributions from noncommutative instantons to a six-dimensional cohomological gauge theory, which yields a dynamical realization of the crystal as a discretization of spacetime at the Planck scale. We describe analogous relations between a melting crystal model in two dimensions and N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions. We elaborate on some mathematical details of the construction of the quantum geometry which combines methods from toric geometry, isospectral deformation theory and noncommutative geometry in braided monoidal categories. In particular, we relate the construction of noncommutative instantons to deformed ADHM data, torsion-free modules and a noncommutative twistor correspondence.

Dimensional Reduction and Vacuum Structure of Quiver Gauge Theory

We describe the structure of the vacuum states of quiver gauge theories obtained via dimensional reduction over homogeneous spaces, in the explicit example of SU(3)-equivariant dimensional reduction of Yang-Mills-Dirac theory on manifolds of the form M x CP(2). We pay particular attention to the role of topology of background gauge fields on the internal coset spaces, in this case U(1) magnetic monopoles and SU(2) instantons on CP(2). The reduction of Yang-Mills theory induces a quiver gauge theory involving coupled Yang-Mills-Higgs systems on M with a Higgs potential leading to dynamical symmetry breaking. The criterion for a ground state of the Higgs potential can be written as the vanishing of a non-abelian Yang-Mills flux on the quiver diagram, regarded as a lattice with group elements attached to the links. The reduction of SU(3)-symmetric fermions yields Dirac fermions on M transforming under the low-energy gauge group with Yukawa couplings. The fermionic zero modes on CP(2) yield exactly massless chiral fermions on M, though there is a unique choice of spin(c) structure on CP(2) for which some of the zero modes can acquire masses through Yukawa interactions. We work out the spontaneous symmetry breaking patterns and determine the complete physical particle spectrum in a number of explicit examples, some of which possess quantum number assignments qualitatively analogous to the manner in which vector bosons, quarks and leptons acquire masses in the standard model.

Dimensional reduction over the quantum sphere and non-abelian q-vortices

We extend equivariant dimensional reduction techniques to the case of quantum spaces which are the product of a Kaehler manifold M with the quantum two-sphere. We work out the reduction of bundles which are equivariant under the natural action of the quantum group SU_q(2), and also of invariant gauge connections on these bundles. The reduction of Yang-Mills gauge theory on the product space leads to a q-deformation of the usual quiver gauge theories on M. We formulate generalized instanton equations on the quantum space and show that they correspond to q-deformations of the usual holomorphic quiver chain vortex equations on M. We study some topological stability conditions for the existence of solutions to these equations, and demonstrate that the corresponding vacuum moduli spaces are generally better behaved than their undeformed counterparts, but much more constrained by the q-deformation. We work out several explicit examples, including new examples of non-abelian vortices on Riemann surfaces, and q-deformations of instantons whose moduli spaces admit the standard hyper-Kaehler quotient construction.

Instantons, Quivers and Noncommutative Donaldson-Thomas Theory

We construct noncommutative Donaldson-Thomas invariants associated with abelian orbifold singularities by analysing the instanton contributions to a six-dimensional topological gauge theory. The noncommutative deformation of this gauge theory localizes on noncommutative instantons which can be classified in terms of three-dimensional Young diagrams with a colouring of boxes according to the orbifold group. We construct a moduli space for these gauge field configurations which allows us to compute its virtual numbers via the counting of representations of a quiver with relations. The quiver encodes the instanton dynamics of the noncommutative gauge theory, and is associated to the geometry of the singularity via the generalized McKay correspondence. The index of BPS states which compute the noncommutative Donaldson-Thomas invariants is realized via topological quantum mechanics based on the quiver data. We illustrate these constructions with several explicit examples, involving also higher rank Coulomb branch invariants and geometries with compact divisors, and connect our approach with other ones in the literature.

Propagators and Matrix Basis on Noncommutative Minkowski Space

We describe an analytic continuation of the Euclidean Grosse-Wulkenhaar and LSZ models which defines a one-parameter family of duality covariant noncommutative field theories interpolating between Euclidean and Minkowski space versions of these models, and provides an alternative regularization to the usual Feynman prescription. This regularization allows for a matrix model representation of the field theories in terms of a complex generalization of the usual basis of Landau wavefunctions. The corresponding propagators are calculated and identified with the Feynman propagators of the field theories. The regulated quantum field theories are shown to be UV/IR-duality covariant. We study the asymptotics of the regularized propagators in position and matrix space representations, and confirm that they generically possess a comparably good decay behaviour as in the Euclidean case.

We show how such quantum spaces can be obtained as stable classical solutions in a zero-dimensional 3-algebra reduced model obtained by dimensional reduction of the Bagger-Lambert-Gustavsson theory. We demonstrate that the groupoid approach to geometric quantization proposed by Hawkins and others can be useful for quantizing 2-plectic manifolds. Chern-Simons matrix models, two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory and the Sutherland model

We derive some new relationships between matrix models of Chern-Simons gauge theory and of two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory. We show that q-integration of the Stieltjes-Wigert matrix model is the discrete matrix model that describes q-deformed Yang-Mills theory on the 2-sphere. We demonstrate that the semiclassical limit of the Chern-Simons matrix model is equivalent to the Gross-Witten model in the weak coupling phase. We study the strong coupling limit of the unitary Chern-Simons matrix model and show that it too induces the Gross-Witten model, but as a first order deformation of Dyson's circular ensemble. We show that the Sutherland model is intimately related to Chern-Simons gauge theory on the 3-sphere, and hence to q-deformed Yang-Mills theory on the 2-sphere. In particular, the ground state wavefunction of the Sutherland model in its classical equilibrium configuration describes the Chern-Simons free energy. The correspondence is extended to Wilson line observables and to arbitrary simply-laced gauge groups.

Instantons, Topological Strings and Enumerative Geometry

We review and elaborate on certain aspects of the connections between instanton counting in maximally supersymmetric gauge theories and the computation of enumerative invariants of smooth varieties. We study in detail three instances of gauge theories in six, four and two dimensions which naturally arise in the context of topological string theory on certain non-compact threefolds. We describe how the instanton counting in these gauge theories are related to the computation of the entropy of supersymmetric black holes, and how these results are related to wall-crossing properties of enumerative invariants such as Donaldson-Thomas and Gromov-Witten invariants. Some features of moduli spaces of torsion-free sheaves and the computation of their Euler characteristics are also elucidated.

Quantized Nambu-Poisson Manifolds and n-Lie Algebras

We investigate the geometric interpretation of quantized Nambu-Poisson structures in terms of noncommutative geometries. We describe an extension of the usual axioms of quantization in which classical Nambu-Poisson structures are translated to n-Lie algebras at quantum level. We demonstrate that this generalized procedure matches an extension of Berezin-Toeplitz quantization yielding quantized spheres, hyperboloids, and superspheres. The extended Berezin quantization of spheres is closely related to a deformation quantization of n-Lie algebras, as well as the approach based on harmonic analysis. We find an interpretation of Nambu-Heisenberg n-Lie algebras in terms of foliations of R^n by fuzzy spheres, fuzzy hyperboloids, and noncommutative hyperplanes. Some applications to the quantum geometry of branes in M-theory are also briefly discussed.

Quantized Nambu-Poisson Manifolds in a 3-Lie Algebra Reduced Model

We consider dimensional reduction of the Bagger-Lambert-Gustavsson theory to a zero-dimensional 3-Lie algebra model and construct various stable solutions corresponding to quantized Nambu-Poisson manifolds. A recently proposed Higgs mechanism reduces this model to the IKKT matrix model. We find that in the strong coupling limit, our solutions correspond to ordinary noncommutative spaces arising as stable solutions in the IKKT model with D-brane backgrounds. In particular, this happens for S^3, R^3 and five-dimensional Neveu-Schwarz Hpp-waves. We expand our model around these backgrounds and find effective noncommutative field theories with complicated interactions involving higher-derivative terms. We also describe the relation of our reduced model to a cubic supermatrix model based on an osp(1|32) supersymmetry algebra.

Ramond-Ramond Fields, Fractional Branes and Orbifold Differential K-Theory

We study D-branes and Ramond-Ramond fields on global orbifolds of Type II string theory with vanishing H-flux using methods of equivariant K-theory and K-homology. We illustrate how Bredon equivariant cohomology naturally realizes stringy orbifold cohomology. We emphasize its role as the correct cohomological tool which captures known features of the low-energy effective field theory, and which provides new consistency conditions for fractional D-branes and Ramond-Ramond fields on orbifolds. We use an equivariant Chern character from equivariant K-theory to Bredon cohomology to define new Ramond-Ramond couplings of D-branes which generalize previous examples. We propose a definition for groups of differential characters associated to equivariant K-theory. We derive a Dirac quantization rule for Ramond-Ramond fluxes, and study flat Ramond-Ramond potentials on orbifolds.

Rank Two Quiver Gauge Theory, Graded Connections and Noncommutative Vortices

We consider equivariant dimensional reduction of Yang-Mills theory on K"ahler manifolds of the form M times CP^1 times CP^1. This induces a rank two quiver gauge theory on M which can be formulated as a Yang-Mills theory of graded connections on M. The reduction of the Yang-Mills equations on M times CP^1 times CP^1 induces quiver gauge theory equations on M and quiver vortex equations in the BPS sector. When M is the noncommutative space R_theta^{2n} both BPS and non-BPS solutions are obtained, and interpreted as states of D-branes. Using the graded connection formalism, we assign D0-brane charges in equivariant K-theory to the quiver vortex configurations. Some categorical properties of these quiver brane configurations are also described in terms of the corresponding quiver representations.

Topological strings and large N phase transitions II: Chiral expansion of q-deformed Yang-Mills theory

We continue our study of the large N phase transition in q-deformed Yang-Mills theory on the sphere and its role in connecting topological strings to black hole entropy. We study in detail the chiral theory defined in terms of uncoupled single U(N) representations at large N and write down the resulting partition function by means of the topological vertex. The emergent toric geometry has three Kaehler parameters, one of which corresponds to the expected fibration over the sphere. By taking a suitable double-scaling limit we recover the chiral Gross-Taylor string expansion. To analyse the phase transition we construct a matrix model which describes the chiral gauge theory. It has three distinct phases, one of which should be described by the closed topological string expansion. We verify this expectation by explicit comparison between the matrix model and the chiral topological string free energies. We also show that the critical point in the pertinent phase of the matrix model corresponds to a divergence of the topological string perturbation series.

Instantons, Fluxons and Open Gauge String Theory

We use the exact instanton expansion to illustrate various string characteristics of noncommutative gauge theory in two dimensions. We analyse the spectrum of the model and present some evidence in favour of Hagedorn and fractal behaviours. The decompactification limit of noncommutative torus instantons is shown to map in a very precise way, at both the classical and quantum level, onto fluxon solutions on the noncommutative plane. The weak-coupling singularities of the usual Gross-Taylor string partition function for QCD on the torus are studied in the instanton representation and its double scaling limit, appropriate for the mapping onto noncommutative gauge theory, is shown to be a generating function for the volumes of the principal moduli spaces of holomorphic differentials. The noncommutative deformation of this moduli space geometry is described and appropriate open string interpretations are proposed in terms of the fluxon expansion.

Noncommutative Instantons in Higher Dimensions, Vortices and Topological K-Cycles

We construct explicit BPS and non-BPS solutions of the U(2k) Yang-Mills equations on the noncommutative space R^{2n}_θx S^2 with finite energy and topological charge. By twisting with a Dirac multi-monopole bundle over S^2, we reduce the Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau equations on R^{2n}_θx S^2 to vortex-type equations for a pair of U(k) gauge fields and a bi-fundamental scalar field on R^{2n}_θ. In the SO(3)-invariant case the vortices on R^{2n}_θdetermine multi-instantons on R^{2n}_θx S^2. We show that these solutions give natural physical realizations of Bott periodicity and vector bundle modification in topological K-homology, and can be interpreted as a blowing-up of D0-branes on R^{2n}_θinto spherical D2-branes on R^{2n}_θx S^2. In the generic case with broken rotational symmetry, we argue that the D0-brane charges on R^{2n}_θx S^2 provide a physical interpretation of the Adams operations in K-theory.

D-Brane Dynamics and Logarithmic Superconformal Algebras

We construct the consistent supersymmetric extensions of the operators describing the recoil of a D-brane and show that they realize an N=1 logarithmic superconformal algebra. The corresponding supersymmetric vertex operator is related to the action of a twisted superparticle with twist field determined by the angular momentum of the recoiling D-brane and with explicitly broken kappa-symmetry. We show that the superconformal completion removes the logarithmic modular divergences that are present in the bosonic string loop scattering amplitudes. These features are all consequences of the relationship that exists in these models between worldsheet rescaling and the time evolution of the D-brane in target space.

Discrete Noncommutative Gauge Theory

A review of the relationships between matrix models and noncommutative gauge theory is presented. A lattice version of noncommutative Yang-Mills theory is constructed and used to examine some generic properties of noncommutative quantum field theory, such as UV/IR mixing and the appearence of gauge-invariant open Wilson line operators. Morita equivalence in this class of models is derived and used to establish the generic relation between noncommutative gauge theory and twisted reduced models. Finite dimensional representations of the quotient conditions for toroidal compactification of matrix models are thereby exhibited. The coupling of noncommutative gauge fields to fundamental matter fields is considered and a large mass expansion is used to study properties of gauge-invariant observables. Morita equivalence with fundamental matter is also presented and used to prove the equivalence between the planar loop renormalizations in commutative and noncommutative quantum chromodynamics.

Non-linear Schroedinger Dynamics of Matrix D-branes

We formulate an effective Schroedinger wave equation describing the quantum dynamics of a system of D0-branes by applying the Wilson renormalization group equation to the worldsheet partition function of a deformed sigma-model describing the system, which includes the quantum recoil due to the exchange of string states between the individual D-particles. We arrive at an effective Fokker-Planck equation for the probability density with diffusion coefficient determined by the total kinetic energy of the recoiling system. We use Galilean invariance of the system to show that there are three possible solutions of the associated non-linear Schroedinger equation depending on the strength of the open string interactions among the D-particles. When the open string energies are small compared to the total kinetic energy of the system, the solutions are governed by freely-propagating solitary waves. When the string coupling constant reaches a dynamically determined critical value, the system is described by minimal uncertainty wavepackets which describe the smearing of the D-particle coordinates due to the distortion of the surrounding spacetime from the string interactions. For strong string interactions, bound state solutions exist with effective mass determined by an energy-dependent shift of the static BPS mass of the D0-branes.

Brane Descent Relations in K-theory

The various descent and duality relations among BPS and non-BPS D-branes are classified using topological K-theory. It is shown how the descent procedures for producing type-II D-branes from brane-antibrane bound states by tachyon condensation and $\klein$ projections arise as natural homomorphisms of K-groups generating the brane charges. The transformations are generalized to type-I theories and type-II orientifolds, from which the complete set of vacuum manifolds and field contents for tachyon condensation is deduced. A new set of internal descent relations is found which describes branes over orientifold planes as topological defects in the worldvolumes of brane-antibrane pairs on top of planes of higher dimension. The periodicity properties of these relations are shown to be a consequence of the fact that all fundamental bound state constructions and hence the complete spectrum of brane charges are associated with the topological solitons which classify the four Hopf fibrations.

Black String Entropy from Anomalous D-brane Couplings

The quantum corrections to the counting of statistical entropy for the 5+1-dimensional extremal black string in type-IIB supergravity with two observers are studied using anomalous Wess-Zumino actions for the corresponding intersecting D-brane description. The electric-magnetic duality symmetry of the anomalous theory implies a new symmetry between D-string and D-fivebrane sources and renders opposite sign for the RR charge of one of the intersecting D-branes relative to that of the black string. The electric-magnetic symmetric Hilbert space decomposes into subspaces associated with interior and exterior regions and it is shown that, for an outside observer, the expectation value of a horizon area operator agrees with the deviation of the classical horizon area in going from extremal to near-extremal black strings.

Matrix D-brane Dynamics, Logarithmic Operators and Quantization of Noncommutative Spacetime

We describe the structure of the moduli space of $σ$-model couplings for the worldsheet description of a system of $N$ D-particles, in the case that the couplings are represented by a pair of logarithmic recoil operators. We derive expressions for the canonical momenta conjugate to the D-particle couplings and the Zamolodchikov metric to the first few orders in $σ$-model perturbation theory. We show, using only very general properties of the operator product expansion in logarithmic conformal field theories, that the canonical dynamics on moduli space agree with the predictions of the non-abelian generalization of the Born-Infeld effective action for D-particles with a symmetrized trace structure. We demonstrate that the Zamolodchikov metric naturally encodes the short-distance structure of spacetime, and from this we derive uncertainty relations for the D-particle coordinates directly from the quantum string theory. We show that the moduli space geometry naturally leads to new forms of spacetime indeterminancies involving only spatial coordinates of target space and illustrate the manner in which the open string interactions between D-particles lead to a spacetime quantization. We also derive appropriate non-abelian generalizations of the string-modified Heisenberg uncertainty relations and the space--time uncertainty principle. The non-abelian uncertainties exhibit decoherence effects suggesting the interplay of quantum gravity in multiple D-particle dynamics.

String Holonomy and Extrinsic Geometry in Four-dimensional Topological Gauge Theory

The most general gauge-invariant marginal deformation of four-dimensional abelian BF-type topological field theory is studied. It is shown that the deformed quantum field theory is topological and that its observables compute, in addition to the usual linking numbers, smooth intersection indices of immersed surfaces which are related to the Euler and Chern characteristic classes of their normal bundles in the underlying spacetime manifold. Canonical quantization of the theory coupled to non-dynamical particle and string sources is carried out in the Hamiltonian formalism and explicit solutions of the Schroedinger equation are obtained. The wavefunctions carry a one-dimensional unitary representation of the particle-string exchange holonomies and of non-topological string-string intersection holonomies given by adiabatic limits of the worldsheet Euler numbers. They also carry a multi-dimensional projective representation of the deRham complex of the underlying spatial manifold and define a generalization of the presentation of its motion group from Euclidean space to an arbitrary 3-manifold. Some potential physical applications of the topological field theory as a dual model for effective vortex strings are discussed.

Noncommutative Geometry and Spacetime Gauge Symmetries of String Theory

We illustrate the various ways in which the algebraic framework of noncommutative geometry naturally captures the short-distance spacetime properties of string theory. We describe the noncommutative spacetime constructed from a vertex operator algebra and show that its algebraic properties bear a striking resemblence to some structures appearing in M Theory, such as the noncommutative torus. We classify the inner automorphisms of the space and show how they naturally imply the conventional duality symmetries of the quantum geometry of spacetime. We examine the problem of constructing a universal gauge group which overlies all of the dynamical symmetries of the string spacetime. We also describe some aspects of toroidal compactifications with a light-like coordinate and show how certain generalized Kac-Moody symmetries, such as the Monster sporadic group, arise as gauge symmetries of the resulting spacetime and of superstring theories.

Equivariant Localization, Spin Systems and Topological Quantum Theory on Riemann Surfaces

We study equivariant localization formulas for phase space path integrals when the phase space is a multiply connected compact Riemann surface. We consider the Hamiltonian systems to which the localization formulas are applicable and show that the localized partition function for such systems is a topological invariant which represents the non-trivial homology classes of the phase space. We explicitly construct the coherent states in the canonical quantum theory and show that the Hilbert space is finite dimensional with the wavefunctions carrying a projective representation of the discrete homology group of the phase space. The corresponding coherent state path integral then describes the quantum dynamics of a novel spin system given by the quantization of a non-symmetric coadjoint Lie group orbit. We also briefly discuss the geometric structure of these quantum systems.
