On the vanishing of Hochster's theta invariant

Hochster's theta invariant is defined for a pair of finitely generated modules on a hypersurface ring having only an isolated singularity. Up to a sign, it agrees with the Euler invariant of a pair of matrix factorizations. Working over the complex numbers, Buchweitz and van Straten have established an interesting connection between Hochster's theta invariant and the classical linking form on the link of the singularity. In particular, they establish the vanishing of the theta invariant if the hypersurface is even-dimensional by exploiting the fact that the (reduced) cohomology of the Milnor fiber is concentrated in odd degrees in this situation. In this paper, we give purely algebraic versions of some of these results. In particular, we establish the vanishing of the theta invariant for isolated hypersurface singularities of odd dimension in characteristic p > 0, under some mild extra assumptions. This confirms, in a large number of cases, a conjecture of Hailong Dao.

The $K$-theoretic bulk-edge correspondence for topological insulators

We study the application of Kasparov theory to topological insulator systems and the bulk-edge correspondence. We consider observable algebras as modelled by crossed products, where bulk and edge systems may be linked by a short exact sequence. We construct unbounded Kasparov modules encoding the dynamics of the crossed product. We then link bulk and edge Kasparov modules using the Kasparov product. Because of the anti-linear symmetries that occur in topological insulator models, real $C^*$-algebras and $KKO$-theory must be used.

Topological Rigidity for FJ by the Infinite Cyclic Group

We call a group FJ if it satisfies the $K$- and $L$-theoretic Farrell-Jones conjecture with coefficients in $\mathbb Z$. We show that if $G$ is FJ, then the simple Borel conjecture (in dimensions $\ge 5$) holds for every group of the form $G\rtimes\mathbb Z$. If in addition $Wh(G\times \mathbb Z)=0$, which is true for all known torsion free FJ groups, then the bordism Borel conjecture (in dimensions $n\ge 5$) holds for $G\rtimes\mathbb Z$. One of the key ingredients in proving these rigidity results is another main result, which says that if a torsion free group $G$ satisfies the $L$-theoretic Farrell-Jones conjecture with coefficients in $\mathbb Z$, then any semi-direct product $G\rtimes\mathbb Z$ also satisfies the $L$-theoretic Farrell-Jones conjecture with coefficients in $\mathbb Z$. Our result is indeed more general and implies the $L$-theoretic Farrell-Jones conjecture with coefficients in additive categories is closed under extensions of torsion free groups. This enables us to extend the class of groups which satisfy the Novikov conjecture.

Géométrie non-commutative, formule des traces et conducteur de Bloch

This text is based on a talk by the first named author at the first congress of the SMF (Tours, 2016). We present Bloch's conductor formula, which is a conjectural formula describing the change of topology in a family of algebraic varieties when the parameter specialises to a critical value. The main objective of this paper is to describe a general approach to the resolution of Bloch's conjecture based on techniques from both non-commutative geometry and derived geometry.

The derived Picard group of an affine Azumaya algebra

We describe the derived Picard group of an Azumaya algebra A on an affine scheme X in terms of global sections of the constant sheaf of integers on X, the Picard group of X, and the stabilizer of the Brauer class of A under the action of Aut(X). In particular, we find that the derived Picard group of an Azumaya algebra is generally not isomorphic to that of the underlying scheme. In the case of the trivial Azumaya algebra, our result refines Yekutieli's description of the derived Picard group of a commutative algebra. We also get, as a corollary, an alternate proof of a result of Antieau which relates derived equivalences to Brauer equivalences for affine Azumaya algebras. The example of a Weyl algebra in finite characteristic is examined in some detail.

On the growth of $L^2$-invariants for sequences of lattices in Lie groups

We study the asymptotic behaviour of Betti numbers, twisted torsion and other spectral invariants of sequences of locally symmetric spaces. Our main results are uniform versions of the DeGeorge--Wallach Theorem, of a theorem of Delorme and various other limit multiplicity theorems. A basic idea is to adapt the notion of Benjamini--Schramm convergence (BS-convergence), originally introduced for sequences of finite graphs of bounded degree, to sequences of Riemannian manifolds, and analyze the possible limits. We show that BS-convergence of locally symmetric spaces implies convergence, in an appropriate sense, of the associated normalized relative Plancherel measures. This then yields convergence of normalized multiplicities of unitary representations, Betti numbers and other spectral invariants. On the other hand, when the corresponding Lie group $G$ is simple and of real rank at least two, we prove that there is only one possible BS-limit, i.e. when the volume tends to infinity, locally symmetric spaces always BS-converge to their universal cover $G/K$. This leads to various general uniform results. When restricting to arbitrary sequences of congruence covers of a fixed arithmetic

The KK-Theory of Fundamental C*-Algebras

Given a graph of C*-algebras, we prove a long exact sequence in KK-theory for both the maximal and the vertex-reduced fundamental C*-algebras in the presence of possibly non GNS-faithful conditional expectations. We deduce from it the KK-equivalence between the full fundamental C*-algebra and the vertex-reduced fundamental C*-algebra even for non GNS-faithful conditional expectations. Our results unify, simplify and generalize all the previous results obtained before by Cuntz, Pimsner, Germain and Thomsen. It also generalizes the previous results of the authors on amalgamated free products.

Brauer spaces for commutative rings and structured ring spectra

Using an analogy between the Brauer groups in algebra and the Whitehead groups in topology, we first use methods of algebraic K-theory to give a natural definition of Brauer spectra for commutative rings, such that their homotopy groups are given by the Brauer group, the Picard group and the group of units. Then, in the context of structured ring spectra, the same idea leads to two-fold non-connected deloopings of the spectra of units.

Morita invariance of unbounded bivariant K-theory

We introduce a notion of Morita equivalence for non-selfadjoint operator algebras equipped with a completely isometric involution (operator *-algebras). We then show that the unbounded Kasparov product by a Morita equivalence bimodule induces an isomorphism between equivalence classes of twisted spectral triples over Morita equivalent operator *-algebras. This leads to a tentative definition of unbounded bivariant K-theory and we prove that this bivariant theory is related to Kasparov's bivariant K-theory via the Baaj-Julg bounded transform. Moreover, the unbounded Kasparov product provides a refinement of the usual interior Kasparov product. We illustrate our results by proving C^1-versions of well-known C^*-algebraic Morita equivalences in the context of hereditary subalgebras, conformal equivalences and crossed products by discrete groups.

The KK-theory of amalgamated free products

We prove a long exact sequence in KK-theory for both full and reduced amalgamated free products in the presence of conditional expectations. In the course of the proof, we established the KK-equivalence between the full amalgamated free product of two unital C*-algebras and a newly defined reduced amalgamated free product that is valid even for non GNS-faithful conditional expectations. Our results unify, simplify and generalize all the previous results obtained before by Cuntz, Germain and Thomsen.

Higher-dimensional Contou-Carrère symbol and continuous automorphisms

We prove that the higher-dimensional Contou-Carrère symbol is invariant under continuous automorphisms of algebras of iterated Laurent series over a ring. Applying this property, we obtain a new explicit formula for the higher-dimensional Contou-Carrère symbol. Unlike previously known formulas, this formula is given over an arbitrary ring, not necessarily a $\mathbb Q$-algebra, and does not involve algebraic $K$-theory.

The full exceptional collections of categorical resolutions of curves

This paper gives a complete answer of the following question: which (singular, projective) curves have a categorical resolution of singularities which admits a full exceptional collection? We prove that such full exceptional collection exists if and only if the geometric genus of the curve equals to 0. Moreover we can also prove that a curve with geometric genus equal or greater than 1 cannot have a categorical resolution of singularities which has a tilting object. The proofs of both results are given by a careful study of the Grothendieck group and the Picard group of that curve.

Algebraic K-theory and derived equivalences suggested by T-duality for torus orientifolds

We show that certain isomorphisms of (twisted) KR-groups that underlie T-dualities of torus orientifold string theories have purely algebraic analogues in terms of algebraic K-theory of real varieties and equivalences of derived categories of (twisted) coherent sheaves. The most interesting conclusion is a kind of Mukai duality in which the "dual abelian variety" to a smooth projective genus-1 curve over R with no real points is (mildly) noncommutative.

K-theory of derivators revisited

We define a $K$-theory for pointed right derivators and show that it agrees with Waldhausen $K$-theory in the case where the derivator arises from a good Waldhausen category. This $K$-theory is not invariant under general equivalences of derivators, but only under a stronger notion of equivalence that is defined by considering a simplicial enrichment of the category of derivators. We show that derivator $K$-theory, as originally defined, is the best approximation to Waldhausen $K$-theory by a functor that is invariant under equivalences of derivators.

The Index Bundle and Multiparameter Bifurcation for Discrete Dynamical Systems

We develop a $K$-theoretic approach to multiparameter bifurcation theory of homoclinic solutions of discrete non-autonomous dynamical systems from a branch of stationary solutions. As a byproduct we obtain a family index theorem for asymptotically hyperbolic linear dynamical systems which is of independent interest. In the special case of a single parameter, our bifurcation theorem weakens the assumptions in previous work by Pejsachowicz and the first author.

Higher Hochschild homology is not a stable invariant

Higher Hochschild homology is the analog of the homology of spaces, where the context for the coefficients -- which usually is that of abelian groups -- is that of commutative algebras. Two spaces that are equivalent after a suspension have the same homology. We show that this is not the case for higher Hochschild homology, providing a counterexample to a behavior so far observed in stable homotopy theory.

Plactic monoids: a braided approach

Young tableaux carry an associative product, described by the Schensted algorithm. They thus form a monoid $\mathbf{Pl}$, called \emph{plactic}. It is central in numerous combinatorial and algebraic applications. In this paper, the tableaux product is shown to be completely determined by a braiding $σ$ on the (much simpler!) set of columns $\mathbf{Col}$. Here a \emph{braiding} is a set-theoretic solution to the Yang--Baxter equation. As an application, we identify the Hochschild cohomology of $\mathbf{Pl}$, which resists classical approaches, with the more accessible braided cohomology of $(\mathbf{Col},σ)$. The cohomological dimension of $\mathbf{Pl}$ is obtained as a corollary. Also, the braiding~$σ$ is proved to commute with the classical crystal reflection operators~$s\_i$.
