Field Theory Equivalences as Spans of $L_\infty$-algebras

Semi-classically equivalent field theories are related by a quasi-isomorphism between their underlying $L_\infty$-algebras, but such a quasi-isomorphism is not necessarily a homotopy transfer. We demonstrate that all quasi-isomorphisms can be lifted to spans of $L_\infty$-algebras in which the quasi-isomorphic $L_\infty$-algebras are obtained from a correspondence $L_\infty$-algebra by a homotopy transfer. Our construction is very useful: homotopy transfer is computationally tractable, and physically, it amounts to integrating out fields in a Feynman diagram expansion. Spans of $L_\infty$-algebras allow for a clean definition of quasi-isomorphisms of cyclic $L_\infty$-algebras. Furthermore, they appear naturally in many contexts within physics. As examples, we first consider scalar field theory with interaction vertices blown up in different ways. We then show that (non-Abelian) T-duality can be seen as a span of $L_\infty$-algebras, and we provide full details in the case of the principal chiral model. We also present the relevant span of $L_\infty$-algebras for the Penrose-Ward transform in the context of self-dual Yang-Mills theory and Bogomolny monopoles.

Loop Amplitudes and Quantum Homotopy Algebras

We derive a recursion relation for loop-level scattering amplitudes of Lagrangian field theories that generalises the tree-level Berends-Giele recursion relation in Yang-Mills theory. The origin of this recursion relation is the homological perturbation lemma, which allows us to compute scattering amplitudes from minimal models of quantum homotopy algebras in a recursive way. As an application of our techniques, we give an alternative proof of the relation between non-planar and planar colour-stripped scattering amplitudes.

Perturbative Quantum Field Theory and Homotopy Algebras

We review the homotopy algebraic perspective on perturbative quantum field theory: classical field theories correspond to homotopy algebras such as $A_\infty$- and $L_\infty$-algebras. Furthermore, their scattering amplitudes are encoded in minimal models of these homotopy algebras at tree level and their quantum relatives at loop level. The translation between Lagrangian field theories and homotopy algebras is provided by the Batalin--Vilkovisky formalism. The minimal models are computed recursively using the homological perturbation lemma, which induces useful recursion relations for the computation of scattering amplitudes. After explaining how the homological perturbation lemma produces the usual Feynman diagram expansion, we use our techniques to verify an identity for the Berends--Giele currents which implies the Kleiss--Kuijf relations.

The Non-Abelian Self-Dual String and the (2,0)-Theory

We argue that the relevant higher gauge group for the non-abelian generalization of the self-dual string equation is the string 2-group. We then derive the corresponding equations of motion and discuss their properties. The underlying geometric picture is a string structure, i.e. a categorified principal bundle with connection whose structure 2-group is the string 2-group. We readily write down the explicit elementary solution to our equations, which is the categorified analogue of the 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole. Our solution passes all the relevant consistency checks; in particular, it is globally defined on $\mathbb{R}^4$ and approaches the abelian self-dual string of charge one at infinity. We note that our equations also arise as the BPS equations in a recently proposed six-dimensional superconformal field theory and we show that with our choice of higher gauge structure, the action of this theory can be reduced to four-dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory.

Towards an M5-Brane Model II: Metric String Structures

In this paper, we develop the mathematical formulation of metric string structures. These play a crucial role in the formulation of certain six-dimensional superconformal field theories and we believe that they also underlie potential future formulations of the (2,0)-theory. We show that the connections on non-abelian gerbes usually introduced in the literature are problematic in that they are locally gauge equivalent to connections on abelian gerbes. Connections on string structures form an exception and we introduce the general concept of an adjusted Weil algebra leading to potentially interacting connections on higher principal bundles. Considering a special case, we derive the metric extension of string structures and the corresponding adjusted Weil algebra. The latter lead to connections that were previously constructed by hand in the context of gauged supergravities. We also explain how the Leibniz algebras induced by an embedding tensor in gauged supergravities fit into our picture.

$L_\infty$-Algebra Models and Higher Chern-Simons Theories

We continue our study of zero-dimensional field theories in which the fields take values in a strong homotopy Lie algebra. In a first part, we review in detail how higher Chern-Simons theories arise in the AKSZ-formalism. These theories form a universal starting point for the construction of $L_\infty$-algebra models. We then show how to describe superconformal field theories and how to perform dimensional reductions in this context. In a second part, we demonstrate that Nambu-Poisson and multisymplectic manifolds are closely related via their Heisenberg algebras. As a byproduct of our discussion, we find central Lie $p$-algebra extensions of $\mathfrak{so}(p+2)$. Finally, we study a number of $L_\infty$-algebra models which are physically interesting and which exhibit quantized multisymplectic manifolds as vacuum solutions.

Generalized Higher Gauge Theory

We study a generalization of higher gauge theory which makes use of generalized geometry and seems to be closely related to double field theory. The local kinematical data of this theory is captured by morphisms of graded manifolds between the canonical exact Courant Lie 2-algebroid $TM\oplus T^*M$ over some manifold $M$ and a semistrict gauge Lie 2-algebra. We discuss generalized curvatures and their infinitesimal gauge transformations. Finite gauge transformation as well as global kinematical data are then obtained from principal 2-bundles over 2-spaces. As dynamical principle, we consider first the canonical Chern-Simons action for such a gauge theory. We then show that a previously proposed 3-Lie algebra model for the six-dimensional (2,0) theory is very naturally interpreted as a generalized higher gauge theory.

Higher Groupoid Bundles, Higher Spaces, and Self-Dual Tensor Field Equations

We develop a description of higher gauge theory with higher groupoids as gauge structure from first principles. This approach captures ordinary gauge theories and gauged sigma models as well as their categorifications on a very general class of (higher) spaces comprising presentable differentiable stacks, as e.g. orbifolds. We start off with a self-contained review on simplicial sets as models of $(\infty,1)$-categories. We then discuss principal bundles in terms of simplicial maps and their homotopies. We explain in detail a differentiation procedure, suggested by Severa, that maps higher groupoids to $L_\infty$-algebroids. Generalising this procedure, we define connections for higher groupoid bundles. As an application, we obtain six-dimensional superconformal field theories via a Penrose-Ward transform of higher groupoid bundles over a twistor space. This construction reduces the search for non-Abelian self-dual tensor field equations in six dimensions to a search for the appropriate (higher) gauge structure. The treatment aims to be accessible to theoretical physicists.

Lectures on Higher Structures in M-Theory

These are notes for four lectures on higher structures in M-theory as presented at workshops at the Erwin Schroedinger Institute and Tohoku University. The first lecture gives an overview of systems of multiple M5-branes and introduces the relevant mathematical structures underlying a local description of higher gauge theory. In the second lecture, we develop the corresponding global picture. A construction of non-abelian superconformal gauge theories in six dimensions using twistor spaces is discussed in the third lecture. The last lecture deals with the problem of higher quantization and its relation to loop space. An appendix summarizes the relation between 3-Lie algebras and Lie 2-algebras.

On Twistors and Conformal Field Theories from Six Dimensions

We discuss chiral zero-rest-mass field equations on six-dimensional space-time from a twistorial point of view. Specifically, we present a detailed cohomological analysis, develop both Penrose and Penrose-Ward transforms, and analyse the corresponding contour integral formulae. We also give twistor space action principles. We then dimensionally reduce the twistor space of six-dimensional space-time to obtain twistor formulations of various theories in lower dimensions. Besides well-known twistor spaces, we also find a novel twistor space amongst these reductions, which turns out to be suitable for a twistorial description of self-dual strings. For these reduced twistor spaces, we explain the Penrose and Penrose-Ward transforms as well as contour integral formulae.

Automorphisms of Strong Homotopy Lie Algebras of Local Observables

There is a well-established procedure of assigning a strong homotopy Lie algebra of local observables to a multisymplectic manifold which can be regarded as part of a categorified Poisson structure. For a 2-plectic manifold, the resulting Lie 2-algebra is isomorphic to a sub Lie 2-algebra of a natural Lie 2-algebra structure on an exact Courant algebroid. We generalize this statement to arbitrary n-plectic manifolds and study automorphisms on the arising Lie n-algebras. Our observations may be useful in studying the quantization problem on multisymplectic manifolds.

Bootstrapping Fuzzy Scalar Field Theory

We describe a new way of rewriting the partition function of scalar field theory on fuzzy complex projective spaces as a solvable multitrace matrix model. This model is given as a perturbative high-temperature expansion. At each order, we present an explicit analytic expression for most of the arising terms; the remaining terms are computed explicitly up to fourth order. The method presented here can be applied to any model of hermitian matrices. Our results confirm constraints previously derived for the multitrace matrix model by Polychronakos. A further implicit expectation about the shape of the multitrace terms is however shown not to be true.

Higher Poincare Lemma and Integrability

We prove the non-abelian Poincare lemma in higher gauge theory in two different ways. The first method uses a result by Jacobowitz which states solvability conditions for differential equations of a certain type. The second method extends a proof by Voronov and yields the explicit gauge parameters connecting a flat local connective structure to the trivial one. Finally, we show how higher flatness appears as a necessary integrability condition of a linear system which featured in recently developed twistor descriptions of higher gauge theories.

Semistrict Higher Gauge Theory

We develop semistrict higher gauge theory from first principles. In particular, we describe the differential Deligne cohomology underlying semistrict principal 2-bundles with connective structures. Principal 2-bundles are obtained in terms of weak 2-functors from the Cech groupoid to weak Lie 2-groups. As is demonstrated, some of these Lie 2-groups can be differentiated to semistrict Lie 2-algebras by a method due to Severa. We further derive the full description of connective structures on semistrict principal 2-bundles including the non-linear gauge transformations. As an application, we use a twistor construction to derive superconformal constraint equations in six dimensions for a non-Abelian N=(2,0) tensor multiplet taking values in a semistrict Lie 2-algebra.

The Phase Diagram of Scalar Field Theory on the Fuzzy Disc

Using a recently developed bootstrapping method, we compute the phase diagram of scalar field theory on the fuzzy disc with quartic even potential. We find three distinct phases with second and third order phase transitions between them. In particular, we find that the second order phase transition happens approximately at a fixed ratio of the two coupling constants defining the potential. We compute this ratio analytically in the limit of large coupling constants. Our results qualitatively agree with previously obtained numerical results.

Lie 2-algebra models

In this paper, we begin the study of zero-dimensional field theories with fields taking values in a semistrict Lie 2-algebra. These theories contain the IKKT matrix model and various M-brane related models as special cases. They feature solutions that can be interpreted as quantized 2-plectic manifolds. In particular, we find solutions corresponding to quantizations of R^3, S^3 and a five-dimensional Hpp-wave. Moreover, by expanding a certain class of Lie 2-algebra models around the solution corresponding to quantized R^3, we obtain higher BF-theory on this quantized space.

Non-Abelian Tensor Multiplet Equations from Twistor Space

We establish a Penrose-Ward transform yielding a bijection between holomorphic principal 2-bundles over a twistor space and non-Abelian self-dual tensor fields on six-dimensional flat space-time. Extending the twistor space to supertwistor space, we derive sets of manifestly N=(1,0) and N=(2,0) supersymmetric non-Abelian constraint equations containing the tensor multiplet. We also demonstrate how this construction leads to constraint equations for non-Abelian supersymmetric self-dual strings.

Six-Dimensional Superconformal Field Theories from Principal 3-Bundles over Twistor Space

We construct manifestly superconformal field theories in six dimensions which contain a non-Abelian tensor multiplet. In particular, we show how principal 3-bundles over a suitable twistor space encode solutions to these self-dual tensor field theories via a Penrose-Ward transform. The resulting higher or categorified gauge theories significantly generalise those obtained previously from principal 2-bundles in that the so-called Peiffer identity is relaxed in a systematic fashion. This transform also exposes various unexplored structures of higher gauge theories modelled on principal 3-bundles such as the relevant gauge transformations. This enables us to formulate the non-Abelian differential cohomology that describes principal 3-bundles with connective structures.

Six-Dimensional (1,0) Superconformal Models and Higher Gauge Theory

We analyze the gauge structure of a recently proposed superconformal field theory in six dimensions. We find that this structure amounts to a weak Courant-Dorfman algebra, which, in turn, can be interpreted as a strong homotopy Lie algebra. This suggests that the superconformal field theory is closely related to higher gauge theory, describing the parallel transport of extended objects. Indeed we find that, under certain restrictions, the field content and gauge transformations reduce to those of higher gauge theory. We also present a number of interesting examples of admissible gauge structures such as the structure Lie 2-algebra of an abelian gerbe, differential crossed modules, the 3-algebras of M2-brane models and string Lie 2-algebras.

A Twistor Description of Six-Dimensional N=(1,1) Super Yang-Mills Theory

We present a twistor space that describes super null-lines on six-dimensional N=(1,1) superspace. We then show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between holomorphic vector bundles over this twistor space and solutions to the field equations of N=(1,1) super Yang-Mills theory. Our constructions naturally reduce to those of the twistorial description of maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions.

Groupoid Quantization of Loop Spaces

We review the various contexts in which quantized 2-plectic manifolds are expected to appear within closed string theory and M-theory. We then discuss how the quantization of a 2-plectic manifold can be reduced to ordinary quantization of its loop space, which is a symplectic manifold. We demonstrate how the latter can be quantized using groupoids. After reviewing the necessary background, we present the groupoid quantization of the loop space of R^3 in some detail.

Groupoids, Loop Spaces and Quantization of 2-Plectic Manifolds

We describe the quantization of 2-plectic manifolds as they arise in the context of the quantum geometry of M-branes and non-geometric flux compactifications of closed string theory. We review the groupoid approach to quantizing Poisson manifolds in detail, and then extend it to the loop spaces of 2-plectic manifolds, which are naturally symplectic manifolds. In particular, we discuss the groupoid quantization of the loop spaces of R^3, T^3 and S^3, and derive some interesting implications which match physical expectations from string theory and M-theory.

M-Brane Models and Loop Spaces

I review an extension of the ADHMN construction of monopoles to M-brane models. This extended construction gives a map from solutions to the Basu-Harvey equation to solutions to the self-dual string equation transgressed to loop space. Loop spaces appear in fact quite naturally in M-brane models. This is demonstrated by translating a recently proposed M5-brane model to loop space. Finally, I comment on some recent developments related to the loop space approach to M-brane models.

M-brane Models from Non-Abelian Gerbes

We make the observation that M-brane models defined in terms of 3-algebras can be interpreted as higher gauge theories involving Lie 2-groups. Such gauge theories arise in particular in the description of non-abelian gerbes. This observation allows us to put M2- and M5-brane models on equal footing, at least as far as the gauge structure is concerned. Furthermore, it provides a useful framework for various generalizations; in particular, it leads to a fully supersymmetric generalization of a previously proposed set of tensor multiplet equations.

Magnetic Domains

Recently a Nahm transform has been discovered for magnetic bags, which are conjectured to arise in the large n limit of magnetic monopoles with charge n. We interpret these ideas using string theory and present some partial proofs of this conjecture. We then extend the notion of bags and their Nahm transform to higher gauge theories and arbitrary domains. Bags in four dimensions conjecturally describe the large n limit of n self-dual strings. We show that the corresponding Basu-Harvey equation is the large n limit of an equation describing n M2-branes, and that it has a natural interpretation in loop space. We also formulate our Nahm equations using strong homotopy Lie algebras.

Branes, Quantization and Fuzzy Spheres

We propose generalized quantization axioms for Nambu-Poisson manifolds, which allow for a geometric interpretation of n-Lie algebras and their enveloping algebras. We illustrate these axioms by describing extensions of Berezin-Toeplitz quantization to produce various examples of quantum spaces of relevance to the dynamics of M-branes, such as fuzzy spheres in diverse dimensions. We briefly describe preliminary steps towards making the notion of quantized 2-plectic manifolds rigorous by extending the groupoid approach to quantization of symplectic manifolds.

Constructing Generalized Self-Dual Strings

We generalize a recently developed ADHMN-like construction of self-dual string solitons using loop space. In particular, we present two extensions: The first one starts from solutions to the Basu-Harvey equation for the ABJM model, the second one starts from solutions to a corresponding BPS equation in an N=2 supersymmetric deformation of the BLG model. Both constructions yield solutions to the abelian and the nonabelian self-dual string equation transgressed to loop space. These equations might provide an effective description of M2-branes suspended between M5-branes.

Fuzzy Scalar Field Theory as Matrix Quantum Mechanics

We study the phase diagram of scalar field theory on a three dimensional Euclidean spacetime whose spatial component is a fuzzy sphere. The corresponding model is an ordinary one-dimensional matrix model deformed by terms involving fixed external matrices. These terms can be approximated by multitrace expressions using a group theoretical method developed recently. The resulting matrix model is accessible to the standard techniques of matrix quantum mechanics.

Quantization of 2-Plectic Manifolds

We describe an extension of the axioms of quantization to the case of 2-plectic manifolds. We show how such quantum spaces can be obtained as stable classical solutions in a zero-dimensional 3-algebra reduced model obtained by dimensional reduction of the Bagger-Lambert-Gustavsson theory. We demonstrate that the groupoid approach to geometric quantization proposed by Hawkins and others can be useful for quantizing 2-plectic manifolds. We discuss our results in the context of recent developments in the quantum geometry of M-branes, and in the nonassociative deformation of spacetime induced by closed strings in the presence of a 2-plectic form.

Super Yang-Mills Theory with Impurity Walls and Instanton Moduli Spaces

We explore maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with walls of impurities respecting half of the supersymmetries. The walls carry fundamental or bifundamental matter multiplets. We employ three-dimensional N=2 superspace language to identify the Higgs branch of this theory. We find that the vacuum conditions determining the Higgs branch are exactly the bow equations yielding Yang-Mills instantons on a multi-Taub-NUT space. Under electric-magnetic duality, the super Yang-Mills theory describing the bulk is mapped to itself, while the fundamental- and bifundamental-carrying impurity walls are interchanged. We perform a one-loop computation on the Coulomb branch of the dual theory to find the asymptotic metric on the original Higgs branch.

The 3-Lie Algebra (2,0) Tensor Multiplet and Equations of Motion on Loop Space

We show that a recently found set of supersymmetric equations of motion for a 3-Lie algebra-valued (2,0) tensor multiplet finds a natural interpretation as supersymmetric gauge field equations on loop space. We find that BPS solutions to these equations yield a previously proposed nonabelian extension of the selfdual string. We describe an ADHMN-like construction that allows for the explicit construction of such BPS solutions.

Marginal Deformations and 3-Algebra Structures

We study marginal deformations of superconformal Chern-Simons matter theories that are based on 3-algebras. For this, we introduce the notion of an associated 3-product, which captures very general gauge invariant deformations of the superpotentials of the BLG and ABJM models. We also consider conformal multi-trace deformations preserving N=2 supersymmetry. We then use N=2 supergraph techniques to compute the two-loop beta functions of these deformations. Besides confirming conformal invariance of both the BLG and ABJM models, we also verify that the recently proposed beta-deformations of the ABJM model are indeed marginal to the order we are considering.

Quantized Nambu-Poisson Manifolds and n-Lie Algebras

We investigate the geometric interpretation of quantized Nambu-Poisson structures in terms of noncommutative geometries. We describe an extension of the usual axioms of quantization in which classical Nambu-Poisson structures are translated to n-Lie algebras at quantum level. We demonstrate that this generalized procedure matches an extension of Berezin-Toeplitz quantization yielding quantized spheres, hyperboloids, and superspheres. The extended Berezin quantization of spheres is closely related to a deformation quantization of n-Lie algebras, as well as the approach based on harmonic analysis. We find an interpretation of Nambu-Heisenberg n-Lie algebras in terms of foliations of R^n by fuzzy spheres, fuzzy hyperboloids, and noncommutative hyperplanes. Some applications to the quantum geometry of branes in M-theory are also briefly discussed.

Quantized Nambu-Poisson Manifolds in a 3-Lie Algebra Reduced Model

We consider dimensional reduction of the Bagger-Lambert-Gustavsson theory to a zero-dimensional 3-Lie algebra model and construct various stable solutions corresponding to quantized Nambu-Poisson manifolds. A recently proposed Higgs mechanism reduces this model to the IKKT matrix model. We find that in the strong coupling limit, our solutions correspond to ordinary noncommutative spaces arising as stable solutions in the IKKT model with D-brane backgrounds. In particular, this happens for S^3, R^3 and five-dimensional Neveu-Schwarz Hpp-waves. We expand our model around these backgrounds and find effective noncommutative field theories with complicated interactions involving higher-derivative terms. We also describe the relation of our reduced model to a cubic supermatrix model based on an osp(1|32) supersymmetry algebra.

The Multitrace Matrix Model of Scalar Field Theory on Fuzzy CP^n

We perform a high-temperature expansion of scalar quantum field theory on fuzzy CP^n to third order in the inverse temperature. Using group theoretical methods, we rewrite the result as a multitrace matrix model. The partition function of this matrix model is evaluated via the saddle point method and the phase diagram is analyzed for various n. Our results confirm the findings of a previous numerical study of this phase diagram for CP^1.

Constraint and Super Yang-Mills Equations on the Deformed Superspace R^(4|16)_\hbar

It has been known for quite some time that the N=4 super Yang-Mills equations defined on four-dimensional Euclidean space are equivalent to certain constraint equations on the Euclidean superspace R^(4|16). In this paper we consider the constraint equations on a deformed superspace R^(4|16)_\hbar a la Seiberg and derive the deformed super Yang-Mills equations. In showing this, we propose a super Seiberg-Witten map.

Supermanifolds - Application to Supersymmetry

Parity is ubiquitous, but not always identified as a simplifying tool for computations. Using parity, having in mind the example of the bosonic/fermionic Fock space, and the framework of Z_2-graded (super) algebra, we clarify relationships between the different definitions of supermanifolds proposed by various people. In addition, we work with four complexes allowing an invariant definition of divergence: - an ascending complex of forms, and a descending complex of densities on real variables - an ascending complex of forms, and descending complex of densities on Grass mann variables. This study is a step towards an invariant definition of integrals of superfunctions defined on supermanifolds leading to an extension to infinite dimensions. An application is given to a construction of supersymmetric Fock spaces.
