Discrete symmetries in classical and quantum oscillators

We consider the nature of the wave function using the example of a harmonic oscillator. We show that the eigenfunctions $ψ_n{=}z^n$ of the quantum Hamiltonian in the complex Bargmann-Fock-Segal representation with $z\in\mathbb C$ are the coordinates of a classical oscillator with energy $E_n=\hbarωn$, $n=0,1,2,...\,$. They are defined on conical spaces ${\mathbb C}/{\mathbb Z}_n$ with cone angles $2π/n$, which are embedded as subspaces in the phase space $\mathbb C$ of the classical oscillator. Here ${\mathbb Z}_n$ is the finite cyclic group of rotations of the space $\mathbb C$ by an angle $2π/n$. The superposition $ψ=\sum_n c_nψ_n$ of the eigenfunctions $ψ_n$ arises only with incomplete knowledge of the initial data for solving the Schrödinger equation, when the conditions of invariance with respect to the discrete groups ${\mathbb Z}_n$ are not imposed and the general solution takes into account all possible initial data parametrized by the numbers $n\in\mathbb N$.

On Exact Solvability of $\mathcal N$=4 super Yang-Mills

We consider the ambitwistor description of $\mathcal N$=4 supersymmetric extension of U($N$) Yang-Mills theory on Minkowski space $\mathbb R^{3,1}$. It is shown that solutions of super-Yang-Mills equations are encoded in real analytic U($N$)-valued functions on a domain in superambitwistor space ${\mathcal L}_{\mathbb R}^{5|6}$ of real dimension $(5|6)$. This leads to a procedure for generating solutions of super-Yang-Mills equations on $\mathbb R^{3,1}$ via solving a Riemann-Hilbert-type factorization problem on two-spheres in $\mathcal L_{\mathbb R}^{5|6}$.

Stueckelberg and Higgs Mechanisms: Frames and Scales

We consider Yang-Mills theory with a compact gauge group $G$ on Minkowski space ${\mathbb R}^{3,1}$ and compare the introduction of masses of gauge bosons using the Stueckelberg and Higgs mechanisms. The Stueckelberg field $ϕ$ is identified with a $G$-frame on the gauge vector bundle $E$ and the kinetic term for $ϕ$ leads to the mass of the gauge bosons. The Stueckelberg mechanism is extended to the Higgs mechanism by adding to the game a scalar field describing rescaling of metric on fibres of $E$. Thus, we associate Higgs fields as well as running coupling parameters with conformal geometry on fibres of gauge bundles. In particular, a running coupling tending to zero or to infinity is equivalent to an unbounded expansion of $G$-fibres or its contraction to a point. We also discuss scale connection, space-time dependent Higgs vacua and compactly supported gauge and quark fields as an attribute of confinement.

Loop groups in Yang-Mills theory

We consider the Yang-Mills equations with a matrix gauge group $G$ on the de Sitter dS$_4$, anti-de Sitter AdS$_4$ and Minkowski $R^{3,1}$ spaces. On all these spaces one can introduce a doubly warped metric in the form $d s^2 =-d u^2 + f^2 d v^2 +h^2 d s^2_{H^2}$, where $f$ and $h$ are the functions of $u$ and $d s^2_{H^2}$ is the metric on the two-dimensional hyperbolic space $H^2$. We show that in the adiabatic limit, when the metric on $H^2$ is scaled down, the Yang-Mills equations become the sigma-model equations describing harmonic maps from a two-dimensional manifold (dS$_2$, AdS$_2$ or $R^{1,1}$, respectively) into the based loop group $ΩG=C^\infty (S^1, G)/G$ of smooth maps from the boundary circle $S^1=\partial H^2$ of $H^2$ into the gauge group $G$. From this correspondence and the implicit function theorem it follows that the moduli space of Yang-Mills theory with a gauge group $G$ in four dimensions is bijective to the moduli space of two-dimensional sigma model with $ΩG$ as the target space. The sigma-model field equations can be reduced to equations of geodesics on $ΩG$, solutions of which yield magnetic-type configurations of Yang-Mills fields. The group $ΩG$ naturally acts on their moduli space.

Sasakian quiver gauge theories and instantons on Calabi-Yau cones

We consider SU(2)-equivariant dimensional reduction of Yang-Mills theory on manifolds of the form $M\times S^3/Γ$, where $M$ is a smooth manifold and $S^3/Γ$ is a three-dimensional Sasaki-Einstein orbifold. We obtain new quiver gauge theories on $M$ whose quiver bundles are based on the affine ADE Dynkin diagram associated to $Γ$. We relate them to those arising through translationally-invariant dimensional reduction over the associated Calabi-Yau cones $C(S^3/Γ)$ which are based on McKay quivers and ADHM matrix models, and to those arising through SU(2)-equivariant dimensional reduction over the leaf spaces of the characteristic foliations of $S^3/Γ$ which are Kähler orbifolds of $\mathbb{C} P^1$ whose quiver bundles are based on the unextended Dynkin diagram corresponding to $Γ$. We use Nahm equations to describe the vacua of SU(2)-equivariant quiver gauge theories on the cones as moduli spaces of spherically symmetric instantons. We relate them to the Nakajima quiver varieties which can be realized as Higgs branches of the worldvolume quiver gauge theories on D$p$-branes probing D$(p+4)$-branes which wrap an ALE space, and to the moduli spaces of spherically symmetric solutions in putative non-abelian generalizations of two-dimensional affine Toda field theories.

Sasakian quiver gauge theories and instantons on the conifold

We consider Spin(4)-equivariant dimensional reduction of Yang-Mills theory on manifolds of the form $M^d \times T^{1,1}$, where $M^d$ is a smooth manifold and $T^{1,1}$ is a five-dimensional Sasaki-Einstein manifold Spin(4)/U(1). We obtain new quiver gauge theories on $M^d$ extending those induced via reduction over the leaf spaces $\mathbb{C}P^1 \times \mathbb{C}P^1$ in $T^{1,1}$. We describe the Higgs branches of these quiver gauge theories as moduli spaces of Spin(4)-equivariant instantons on the conifold which is realized as the metric cone over $T^{1,1}$. We give an explicit construction of these moduli spaces as Kähler quotients.

Superstring limit of Yang-Mills theories

It was pointed out by Shifman and Yung that the critical superstring on $X^{10}={\mathbb R}^4\times Y^6$, where $Y^6$ is the resolved conifold, appears as an effective theory for a U(2) Yang-Mills-Higgs system with four fundamental Higgs scalars defined on $Σ_2\times{\mathbb R}^2$, where $Σ_2$ is a two-dimensional Lorentzian manifold. Their Yang-Mills model supports semilocal vortices on ${\mathbb R}^2\subsetΣ_2\times{\mathbb R}^2$ with a moduli space $X^{10}$. When the moduli of slowly moving thin vortices depend on the coordinates of $Σ_2$, the vortex strings can be identified with critical fundamental strings. We show that similar results can be obtained for the low-energy limit of pure Yang-Mills theory on $Σ_2\times T^2_p$, where $T^2_p$ is a two-dimensional torus with a puncture $p$. The solitonic vortices of Shifman and Yung then get replaced by flat connections. Various ten-dimensional superstring target spaces can be obtained as moduli spaces of flat connections on $T^2_p$, depending on the choice of the gauge group. The full Green-Schwarz sigma model requires extending the gauge group to a supergroup and augmenting the action with a topological term.

Superstring theories as low-energy limit of supergroup gauge theories

We consider Yang-Mills theory with $N=2$ super translation group in $d=10$ auxiliary dimensions as the structure group. The gauge theory is defined on a direct product manifold $Σ_2\times H^2$, where $Σ_2$ is a two-dimensional Lorentzian manifold and $H^2$ is the open disc in $\mathbb{R}^2$ with the boundary $S^1=\partial H^2$. We show that in the adiabatic limit, when the metric on $H^2$ is scaled down, the Yang-Mills action supplemented by the $d=5$ Chern-Simons term becomes the Green-Schwarz superstring action. More concretely, the Yang-Mills action in the infrared limit flows to the kinetic part of the superstring action and the $d=5$ Chern-Simons action, defined on a 5-manifold with the boundary $Σ_2\times H^2$, flows to the Wess-Zumino part of the superstring action. The same kind of duality between gauge fields and strings is established for type IIB superstring on AdS$_5\times S^5$ background and a supergroup gauge theory with PSU(2,2$|$4) as the structure group.

Green-Schwarz superstring as subsector of Yang-Mills theory

We consider Yang-Mills theory with N=2 super translation group in ten auxiliary dimensions as the structure group. The gauge theory is defined on a direct product manifold Σ_2\times H^2, where Σ_2 is a two-dimensional Lorentzian manifold and H^2 is the open disc in R^2 with the boundary S^1=\partial H^2. We show that in the adiabatic limit, when the metric on H^2 is scaled down, the Yang-Mills action supplemented by a Wess-Zumino-type term becomes the Green-Schwarz superstring action.

Instantons on conical half-flat 6-manifolds

We present a general procedure to construct 6-dimensional manifolds with SU(3)-structure from SU(2)-structure 5-manifolds. We thereby obtain half-flat cylinders and sine-cones over 5-manifolds with Sasaki-Einstein SU(2)-structure. They are nearly Kahler in the special case of sine-cones over Sasaki-Einstein 5-manifolds. Both half-flat and nearly Kahler 6-manifolds are prominent in flux compactifications of string theory. Subsequently, we investigate instanton equations for connections on vector bundles over these half-flat manifolds. A suitable ansatz for gauge fields on these 6-manifolds reduces the instanton equation to a set of matrix equations. We finally present some of its solutions and discuss the instanton configurations obtained this way.

Sasakian quiver gauge theories and instantons on cones over lens 5-spaces

We consider SU(3)-equivariant dimensional reduction of Yang-Mills theory over certain cyclic orbifolds of the 5-sphere which are Sasaki-Einstein manifolds. We obtain new quiver gauge theories extending those induced via reduction over the leaf spaces of the characteristic foliation of the Sasaki-Einstein structure, which are projective planes. We describe the Higgs branches of these quiver gauge theories as moduli spaces of spherically symmetric instantons which are SU(3)-equivariant solutions to the Hermitian Yang-Mills equations on the associated Calabi-Yau cones, and further compare them to moduli spaces of translationally-invariant instantons on the cones. We provide an explicit unified construction of these moduli spaces as Kähler quotients and show that they have the same cyclic orbifold singularities as the cones over the lens 5-spaces.

Sigma-model limit of Yang-Mills instantons in higher dimensions

We consider the Hermitian Yang-Mills (instanton) equations for connections on vector bundles over a 2n-dimensional Kähler manifold X which is a product Y x Z of p- and q-dimensional Riemannian manifold Y and Z with p+q=2n. We show that in the adiabatic limit, when the metric in the Z direction is scaled down, the gauge instanton equations on Y x Z become sigma-model instanton equations for maps from Y to the moduli space M (target space) of gauge instantons on Z if q>= 4. For q<4 we get maps from Y to the moduli space M of flat connections on Z. Thus, the Yang-Mills instantons on Y x Z converge to sigma-model instantons on Y while Z shrinks to a point. Put differently, for small volume of Z, sigma-model instantons on Y with target space M approximate Yang-Mills instantons on Y x Z.

String theories as the adiabatic limit of Yang-Mills theory

We consider Yang-Mills theory with a matrix gauge group $G$ on a direct product manifold $M=Σ_2\times H^2$, where $Σ_2$ is a two-dimensional Lorentzian manifold and $H^2$ is a two-dimensional open disc with the boundary $S^1=\partial H^2$. The Euler-Lagrange equations for the metric on $Σ_2$ yield constraint equations for the Yang-Mills energy-momentum tensor. We show that in the adiabatic limit, when the metric on $H^2$ is scaled down, the Yang-Mills equations plus constraints on the energy-momentum tensor become the equations describing strings with a worldsheet $Σ_2$ moving in the based loop group $ΩG=C^\infty (S^1, G)/G$, where $S^1$ is the boundary of $H^2$. By choosing $G=R^{d-1, 1}$ and putting to zero all parameters in $ΩR^{d-1, 1}$ besides $R^{d-1, 1}$, we get a string moving in $R^{d-1, 1}$. In arXiv:1506.02175 it was described how one can obtain the Green-Schwarz superstring action from Yang-Mills theory on $Σ_2\times H^2$ while $H^2$ shrinks to a point. Here we also consider Yang-Mills theory on a three-dimensional manifold $Σ_2\times S^1$ and show that in the limit when the radius of $S^1$ tends to zero, the Yang-Mills action functional supplemented by a Wess-Zumino-type term becomes the Green-Schwarz superstring action.

Supermembrane limit of Yang-Mills theory

We consider Yang-Mills theory with $N{=}1$ super translation group in eleven auxiliary dimensions as the structure group. The gauge theory is defined on a direct product manifold $Σ_3\times S^1$, where $Σ_3$ is a three-dimensional Lorentzian manifold and $S^1$ is a circle. We show that in the infrared limit, when the metric on $S^1$ is scaled down, the Yang-Mills action supplemented by a Wess-Zumino-type term reduces to the action of an M2-brane.

Yang-Mills moduli space in the adiabatic limit

We consider the Yang-Mills equations for a matrix gauge group $G$ inside the future light cone of 4-dimensional Minkowski space, which can be viewed as a Lorentzian cone $C(H^3)$ over the 3-dimensional hyperbolic space $H^3$. Using the conformal equivalence of $C(H^3)$ and the cylinder $R\times H^3$, we show that, in the adiabatic limit when the metric on $H^3$ is scaled down, classical Yang-Mills dynamics is described by geodesic motion in the infinite-dimensional group manifold $C^\infty (S^2_\infty,G)$ of smooth maps from the boundary 2-sphere $S^2_\infty=\partial H^3$ into the gauge group $G$.

Instantons in six dimensions and twistors

Recently, conformal field theories in six dimensions were discussed from the twistorial point of view. In particular, it was demonstrated that the twistor transform between chiral zero-rest-mass fields and cohomology classes on twistor space can be generalized from four to six dimensions. On the other hand, the possibility of generalizing the correspondence between instanton gauge fields and holomorphic bundles over twistor space is questionable. It was shown by Saemann and Wolf that holomorphic line bundles over the canonical twistor space Tw(X) (defined as a bundle of almost complex structures over the six-dimensional manifold X) correspond to pure-gauge Maxwell potentials, i.e. the twistor transform fails. On the example of X=CP^3 we show that there exists a twistor correspondence between Abelian or non-Abelian Yang-Mills instantons on CP^3 and holomorphic bundles over complex submanifolds of Tw(CP^3), but it is not so efficient as in the four-dimensional case because the twistor transform does not parametrize instantons by unconstrained holomorphic data as it does in four dimensions.

Instantons on sine-cones over Sasakian manifolds

We investigate instantons on sine-cones over Sasaki-Einstein and 3-Sasakian manifolds. It is shown that these conical Einstein manifolds are K"ahler with torsion (KT) manifolds admitting Hermitian connections with totally antisymmetric torsion. Furthermore, a deformation of the metric on the sine-cone over 3-Sasakian manifolds allows one to introduce a hyper-K"ahler with torsion (HKT) structure. In the large-volume limit these KT and HKT spaces become Calabi-Yau and hyper-K"ahler conifolds, respectively. We construct gauge connections on complex vector bundles over conical KT and HKT manifolds which solve the instanton equations for Yang-Mills fields in higher dimensions.

Orbifold instantons, moment maps and Yang-Mills theory with sources

We revisit the problem of constructing instantons on ADE orbifolds R^4/Γand point out some subtle relations with the complex structure on the orbifold. We consider generalized instanton equations on R^4/Γwhich are BPS equations for the Yang-Mills equations with an external current. The relation between level sets of the moment maps in the hyper-Kaehler quotient construction of the instanton moduli space and sources in the Yang-Mills equations is discussed. We describe two types of spherically-symmetric Γ-equivariant connections on complex V-bundles over R^4/Γwhich are tailored to the way in which the orbifold group acts on the fibres. Some explicit abelian and nonabelian SU(2)-invariant solutions to the nstanton equations on the orbifold are worked out.

Double quiver gauge theory and nearly Kahler flux compactifications

We consider G-equivariant dimensional reduction of Yang-Mills theory with torsion on manifolds of the form MxG/H where M is a smooth manifold, and G/H is a compact six-dimensional homogeneous space provided with a never integrable almost complex structure and a family of SU(3)-structures which includes a nearly Kahler structure. We establish an equivalence between G-equivariant pseudo-holomorphic vector bundles on MxG/H and new quiver bundles on M associated to the double of a quiver Q, determined by the SU(3)-structure, with relations ensuring the absence of oriented cycles in Q. When M=R^2, we describe an equivalence between G-invariant solutions of Spin(7)-instanton equations on MxG/H and solutions of new quiver vortex equations on M. It is shown that generic invariant Spin(7)-instanton configurations correspond to quivers Q that contain non-trivial oriented cycles.

Heterotic string plus five-brane systems with asymptotic AdS3

We present NS1+NS5-brane solutions of heterotic supergravity on curved geometries. They interpolate between a near horizon AdS3 x X^k x T^{7-k} region and R^{1,1} x c(X^k) x T^{7-k}, where X^k (with k = 3,5,6,7) is a k-dimensional geometric Killing spinor manifold, c(X^k) its Ricci-flat cone and T^{7-k} a (7-k)-torus. The solutions require first order alpha'-corrections to the field equations, and special point-like instantons play an important role, whose singular support is a calibrated submanifold wrapped by the NS5-brane. It is also possible to add a gauge anti-5-brane. We determine the super isometries of the near horizon geometry which are supposed to appear as symmetries of the holographically dual two-dimensional conformal field theory.

Instantons on Special Holonomy Manifolds

We consider cones over manifolds admitting real Killing spinors and instanton equations on connections on vector bundles over these manifolds. Such cones are manifolds with special (reduced) holonomy. We generalize the scalar ansatz for a connection proposed by Harland and Nolle in such a way that instantons are parameterized by constrained matrix-valued functions. Our ansatz reduces instanton equations to a matrix model equations which can be further reduced to Newtonian mechanics with particle trajectories obeying first-order gradient flow equations. Generalizations to Kaehler-Einstein manifolds and resolved Calabi-Yau cones are briefly discussed. Our construction allows one to associate quiver gauge theories with special holonomy manifolds.

Instantons on the six-sphere and twistors

We consider the six-sphere S^6=G_2/SU(3) and its twistor space Z=G_2/U(2) associated with the SU(3)-structure on S^6. It is shown that a Hermitian Yang-Mills connection (instanton) on a smooth vector bundle over S^6 is equivalent to a flat partial connection on a vector bundle over the twistor space Z. The relation with Tian's tangent instantons on R^7 and their twistor description are briefly discussed.

Integrable vortex-type equations on the two-sphere

We consider the Yang-Mills instanton equations on the four-dimensional manifold S^2xSigma, where Sigma is a compact Riemann surface of genus g>1 or its covering space H^2=SU(1,1)/U(1). Introducing a natural ansatz for the gauge potential, we reduce the instanton equations on S^2xSigma to vortex-type equations on the sphere S^2. It is shown that when the scalar curvature of the manifold S^2xSigma vanishes, the vortex-type equations are integrable, i.e. can be obtained as compatibility conditions of two linear equations (Lax pair) which are written down explicitly. Thus, the standard methods of integrable systems can be applied for constructing their solutions. However, even if the scalar curvature of S^2xSigma does not vanish, the vortex equations are well defined and have solutions for any values of the topological charge N. We show that any solution to the vortex equations on S^2 with a fixed topological charge N corresponds to a Yang-Mills instanton on S^2xSigma of charge (g-1)N.

Nearly Kähler heterotic compactifications with fermion condensates

We revisit AdS_4 heterotic compactifications on nearly Kähler manifolds in the presence of H-flux and certain fermion condensates. Unlike previous studies, we do not assume the vanishing of the supersymmetry variations. Instead we determine the full equations of motion originating from the ten-dimensional action, and subsequently we provide explicit solutions to them on nearly Kähler manifolds at first order in alpha'. The Bianchi identity is also taken into account in order to guarantee the absence of all anomalies. In the presence of H-flux, which is identified with the torsion of the internal space, as well as of fermion condensates in the gaugino and dilatino sectors, new solutions are determined. These solutions provide a full classification of consistent backgrounds of heterotic supergravity under our assumptions. All the new solutions are non-supersymmetric, while previously known supersymmetric ones are recovered too. Our results indicate that fully consistent (supersymmetric or not) heterotic vacua on nearly Kähler manifolds are scarce, even on AdS_4, and they can be completely classified.

Yang-Mills fields in flux compactifications on homogeneous manifolds with SU(4)-structure

The SU(4)-instanton equations are natural BPS equations for instantons on 8-manifolds. We study these equations on nearly Kaehler and Calabi-Yau torsion manifolds of the form M x G/H, with G/H a coset space and M a product of a torus with Euclidean space. By imposing G-invariance the instanton equations reduce to interesting equations on M; for example, equations used by Kapustin and Witten in the geometric Langlands program arise in this way. We carry out reductions in a number of examples, and where possible present simple solutions.

Chern-Simons flows on Aloff-Wallach spaces and Spin(7)-instantons

Due to their explicit construction, Aloff-Wallach spaces are prominent in flux compactifications. They carry G_2-structures and admit the G_2-instanton equations, which are natural BPS equations for Yang-Mills instantons on seven-manifolds and extremize a Chern-Simons-type functional. We consider the Chern-Simons flow between different G_2-instantons on Aloff-Wallach spaces, which is equivalent to Spin(7)-instantons on a cylinder over them. For a general SU(3)-equivariant gauge connection, the generalized instanton equations turn into gradient-flow equations on C^3 x R^2, with a particular cubic superpotential. For the simplest member of the Aloff-Wallach family (with 3-Sasakian structure) we present an explicit instanton solution of tanh-like shape.

Yang-Mills instantons on cones and sine-cones over nearly Kähler manifolds

We present a unified eight-dimensional approach to instanton equations on several seven-dimensional manifolds associated to a six-dimensional homogeneous nearly Kähler manifold. The cone over the sine-cone on a nearly Kähler manifold has holonomy group Spin(7) and can be foliated by submanifolds with either holonomy group G_2, a nearly parallel G_2-structure or a cocalibrated G_2-structure. We show that there is a G_2-instanton on each of these seven-dimensional manifolds which gives rise to a Spin(7)-instanton in eight dimensions. The well-known octonionic instantons on R^7 and R^8 are contained in our construction as the special cases of an instanton on the cone and on the cone over the sine-cone, both over the six-sphere, respectively.

Heterotic compactifications on nearly Kähler manifolds

We consider compactifications of heterotic supergravity on anti-de Sitter space, with a six-dimensional nearly K"ahler manifold as the internal space. Completing the model proposed by Frey and Lippert with the particular choice of SU(3)/U(1)xU(1) for the internal manifold, we show that it satisfies not only the supersymmetry constraints but also the equations of motion with string corrections of order alpha'. Furthermore, we present a non-supersymmetric model. In both solutions we find confirmed a recent result of Ivanov on the connection used for anomaly cancellation. Interestingly, the volume of the internal space is fixed by the supersymmetry constraints and/or the equations of motion.

Non-Abelian Vortices, Super-Yang-Mills Theory and Spin(7)-Instantons

We consider a complex vector bundle E endowed with a connection A over the eight-dimensional manifold R^2 x G/H, where G/H = SU(3)/U(1)xU(1) is a homogeneous space provided with a never integrable almost complex structure and a family of SU(3)-structures. We establish an equivalence between G-invariant solutions A of the Spin(7)-instanton equations on R^2 x G/H and general solutions of non-Abelian coupled vortex equations on R^2. These vortices are BPS solitons in a d=4 gauge theory obtained from N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in ten dimensions compactified on the coset space G/H with an SU(3)-structure. The novelty of the obtained vortex equations lies in the fact that Higgs fields, defining morphisms of vector bundles over R^2, are not holomorphic in the generic case. Finally, we introduce BPS vortex equations in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory and show that they have the same feature.

Yang-Mills flows on nearly Kaehler manifolds and G_2-instantons

We consider Lie(G)-valued G-invariant connections on bundles over spaces G/H, RxG/H and R^2xG/H, where G/H is a compact nearly Kaehler six-dimensional homogeneous space, and the manifolds RxG/H and R^2xG/H carry G_2- and Spin(7)-structures, respectively. By making a G-invariant ansatz, Yang-Mills theory with torsion on RxG/H is reduced to Newtonian mechanics of a particle moving in a plane with a quartic potential. For particular values of the torsion, we find explicit particle trajectories, which obey first-order gradient or hamiltonian flow equations. In two cases, these solutions correspond to anti-self-dual instantons associated with one of two G_2-structures on RxG/H. It is shown that both G_2-instanton equations can be obtained from a single Spin(7)-instanton equation on R^2xG/H.

Hermitian-Yang-Mills equations and pseudo-holomorphic bundles on nearly Kaehler and nearly Calabi-Yau twistor 6-manifolds

We consider the Hermitian-Yang-Mills (HYM) equations for gauge potentials on a complex vector bundle E over an almost complex manifold X^6 which is the twistor space of an oriented Riemannian manifold M^4. Each solution of the HYM equations on such X^6 defines a pseudo-holomorphic structure on the bundle E. It is shown that the pull-back to X^6 of any anti-self-dual gauge field on M^4 is a solution of the HYM equations on X^6. This correspondence allows us to introduce new twistor actions for bosonic and supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories. As examples of X^6 we consider homogeneous nearly Kaehler and nearly Calabi-Yau manifolds which are twistor spaces of S^4, CP^2 and B_4, CB_2 (real 4-ball and complex 2-ball), respectively. Various explicit examples of solutions to the HYM equations on these spaces are provided. Applications in flux compactifications of heterotic strings are briefly discussed.

Bounces/Dyons in the Plane Wave Matrix Model and SU(N) Yang-Mills Theory

We consider SU(N) Yang-Mills theory on the space R^1\times S^3 with Minkowski signature (-+++). The condition of SO(4)-invariance imposed on gauge fields yields a bosonic matrix model which is a consistent truncation of the plane wave matrix model. For matrices parametrized by a scalar ϕ, the Yang-Mills equations are reduced to the equation of a particle moving in the double-well potential. The classical solution is a bounce, i.e. a particle which begins at the saddle point ϕ=0 of the potential, bounces off the potential wall and returns to ϕ=0. The gauge field tensor components parametrized by ϕare smooth and for finite time both electric and magnetic fields are nonvanishing. The energy density of this non-Abelian dyon configuration does not depend on coordinates of R^1\times S^3 and the total energy is proportional to the inverse radius of S^3. We also describe similar bounce dyon solutions in SU(N) Yang-Mills theory on the space R^1\times S^2 with signature (-++). Their energy is proportional to the square of the inverse radius of S^2. From the viewpoint of Yang-Mills theory on R^{1,1}\times S^2 these solutions describe non-Abelian (dyonic) flux tubes extended along the x^3-axis.

Rank Two Quiver Gauge Theory, Graded Connections and Noncommutative Vortices

We consider equivariant dimensional reduction of Yang-Mills theory on K"ahler manifolds of the form M times CP^1 times CP^1. This induces a rank two quiver gauge theory on M which can be formulated as a Yang-Mills theory of graded connections on M. The reduction of the Yang-Mills equations on M times CP^1 times CP^1 induces quiver gauge theory equations on M and quiver vortex equations in the BPS sector. When M is the noncommutative space R_theta^{2n} both BPS and non-BPS solutions are obtained, and interpreted as states of D-branes. Using the graded connection formalism, we assign D0-brane charges in equivariant K-theory to the quiver vortex configurations. Some categorical properties of these quiver brane configurations are also described in terms of the corresponding quiver representations.

Integrable Noncommutative Sine-Gordon Model

Requiring an infinite number of conserved local charges or the existence of an underlying linear system does not uniquely determine the Moyal deformation of 1+1 dimensional integrable field theories. As an example, the sine-Gordon model may be obtained by dimensional and algebraic reduction from 2+2 dimensional self-dual U(2) Yang-Mills through a 2+1 dimensional integrable U(2) sigma model, with some freedom in the noncommutative extension of this algebraic reduction. Relaxing the latter from U(2)->U(1) to U(2)->U(1)xU(1), we arrive at novel noncommutative sine-Gordon equations for a pair of scalar fields. The dressing method is employed to construct its multi-soliton solutions. Finally, we evaluate various tree-level amplitudes to demonstrate that our model possesses a factorizable and causal S-matrix in spite of its time-space noncommutativity.

Noncommutative Instantons in Higher Dimensions, Vortices and Topological K-Cycles

We construct explicit BPS and non-BPS solutions of the U(2k) Yang-Mills equations on the noncommutative space R^{2n}_θx S^2 with finite energy and topological charge. By twisting with a Dirac multi-monopole bundle over S^2, we reduce the Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau equations on R^{2n}_θx S^2 to vortex-type equations for a pair of U(k) gauge fields and a bi-fundamental scalar field on R^{2n}_θ. In the SO(3)-invariant case the vortices on R^{2n}_θdetermine multi-instantons on R^{2n}_θx S^2. We show that these solutions give natural physical realizations of Bott periodicity and vector bundle modification in topological K-homology, and can be interpreted as a blowing-up of D0-branes on R^{2n}_θinto spherical D2-branes on R^{2n}_θx S^2. In the generic case with broken rotational symmetry, we argue that the D0-brane charges on R^{2n}_θx S^2 provide a physical interpretation of the Adams operations in K-theory.

Noncommutative Multi-Solitons in 2+1 Dimensions

The study of noncommutative solitons is greatly facilitated if the field equations are integrable, i.e. result from a linear system. For the example of a modified but integrable U(n) sigma model in 2+1 dimensions we employ the dressing method to construct explicit multi-soliton configurations on noncommutative R^{2,1}. These solutions, abelian and nonabelian, feature exact time-dependence for any value of the noncommutativity parameter theta and describe various lumps of finite energy in relative motion. We discuss their scattering properties and prove asymptotic factorization for large times.

Seiberg-Witten Monopole Equations on Noncommutative R^4

It is well known that, due to vanishing theorems, there are no nontrivial finite action solutions to the Abelian Seiberg-Witten (SW) monopole equations on Euclidean four-dimensional space R^4. We show that this is no longer true for the noncommutative version of these equations, i.e., on a noncommutative deformation R^4_θof R^4 there exist smooth solutions to the SW equations having nonzero topological charge. We introduce action functionals for the noncommutative SW equations and construct explicit regular solutions. All our solutions have finite energy. We also suggest a possible interpretation of the obtained solutions as codimension four vortex-like solitons representing D(p-4)- and anti-D(p-4)-branes in a Dp-anti-Dp brane system in type II superstring theory.

Exact Solutions of Berkovits' String Field Theory

The equation of motion for Berkovits' WZW-like open (super)string field theory is shown to be integrable in the sense that it can be written as the compatibility condition ("zero-curvature condition") of some linear equations. Employing a generalization of solution-generating techniques (the splitting and the dressing methods), we demonstrate how to construct nonperturbative classical configurations of both N=1 superstring and N=2 fermionic string field theories. With and without u(n) Chan-Paton factors, various solutions of the string field equation are presented explicitly.

On Nonperturbative Solutions of Superstring Field Theory

Nonperturbative solutions to the nonlinear field equations in the NS sector of cubic as well as nonpolynomial superstring field theory can be obtained from a linear equation which includes a "spectral" parameter λand a coboundary operator Q(λ). We borrow a simple ansatz from the dressing method (for generating solitons in integrable field theories) and show that classical superstring fields can be constructed from any string field T subject merely to Q(λ)T=0. Following the decay of the non-BPS D9 brane in IIA theory and shifting the background to the tachyon vacuum, we repeat the arguments in vacuum superstring field theory and outline how to compute classical solutions explicitly.

Noncommutative Solitons in Open N=2 String Theory

Coincident D2-branes in open N=2 fermionic string theory with a B-field background yield an integrable modified U(n) sigma model on noncommutative R^{2,1}. This model provides a showcase for an established method (the `dressing approach') to generate solutions for integrable field equations, even in the noncommutative case. We demonstrate the technique by constructing moving U(1) and U(2) solitons and by computing their energies. It is outlined how to derive multi-soliton configurations with arbitrary relative motion; they correspond to D0-branes moving inside the D2-branes.

Closed N=2 Strings: Picture-Changing, Hidden Symmetries and SDG Hierarchy

We study the action of picture-changing and spectral flow operators on a ground ring of ghost number zero operators in the chiral BRST cohomology of the closed N=2 string and describe an infinite set of symmetry charges acting on physical states. The transformations of physical string states are compared with symmetries of self-dual gravity which is the effective field theory of the closed N=2 string. We derive all infinitesimal symmetries of the self-dual gravity equations in 2+2 dimensional spacetime and introduce an infinite hierarchy of commuting flows on the moduli space of self-dual metrics. The dependence on moduli parameters can be recovered by solving the equations of the SDG hierarchy associated with an infinite set of abelian symmetries generated recursively from translations. These non-local abelian symmetries are shown to coincide with the hidden abelian string symmetries responsible for the vanishing of most scattering amplitudes. Therefore, N=2 string theory "predicts" not only self-dual gravity but also the SDG hierarchy.
