Integrability of supersymmetric Calogero-Moser models

We analyze the integrability of the ${\cal N}$-extended supersymmetric Calogero-Moser model. We explicitly construct the Lax pair $\{L,A\}$ for this system, which properly reproduces all equations of motion. After adding a supersymmetric oscillator potential we reduce the latter to solving $\dot{U}\,{=}\,A\,U$ for the time evolution operator $U(t)$. The bosonic variables, however, evolve independently of $U$ on closed trajectories, as is required for superintegrability. To visualize the structure of the conserved currents we derive the complete set of Liouville charges up to the fifth power in the momenta, for the ${\cal N}{=}\,2$ supersymmetric model. The additional, non-involutive, conserved charges needed for a maximal superintegrability of this model are also found.

The Nicolai map for super Yang-Mills theory and application to the supermembrane

The nonlocal bosonic theory obtained from integrating out all anticommuting and auxiliary variables in a globally supersymmetric theory is characterized by the Nicolai map. We present a universal formula for the latter in terms of an ordered exponential of the integrated coupling flow operator, which can be canonically constructed. Also for supersymmetric gauge theories, this allows us to perturbatively construct the Nicolai map explicitly in terms of tree diagrams. For off-shell supersymmetry this works in any gauge, in the on-shell case the Landau gauge is required. The dimensional reduction of $D{=}10$ super Yang-Mills to maximally supersymmetric SU($N$) matrix mechanics (the BFSS model) is known to provide a regularization of the $D{=}11$ supermembrane in light-cone gauge via its incarnation as a one-dimensional gauge theory of area-preserving membrane diffeomorphisms. We show how a well-defined corresponding Nicolai map perturbatively linearizes the supermembrane in the small-tension regime and points the way for a computation of vertex-operator correlators.

Integrability, intertwiners and non-linear algebras in Calogero models

For the rational quantum Calogero systems of type $A_1{\oplus}A_2$, $AD_3$ and $BC_3$, we explicitly present complete sets of independent conserved charges and their nonlinear algebras. Using intertwining (or shift) operators, we include the extra `odd' charges appearing for integral couplings. Formulae for the energy eigenstates are used to tabulate the low-level wave functions.

New approach to ${\cal N} {=}2$ supersymmetric Ruijsenaars-Schneider model

We present a very simple form of the supercharges and the Hamiltonian of ${\cal N} {=}\,2$ supersymmetric extension of $n$-particle Ruijsenaars--Schneider models for three cases of the interaction: $1/(x_i-x_j)$, $1/tan(x_i-x_j)$, $1/tanh(x_i-x_j)$. The long "fermionic tails" of the supercharges and Hamiltonian rolled up in the simple rational functions depending on fermionic bilinears.

${\cal N}{=}\,4$ supersymmetric Calogero-Sutherland models

Starting from the Hamiltonian formulation of supersymmetric Calogero models associated with the classical $A_n$, $B_n$, $C_n$ and $D_n$ series we construct the ${\cal N}{=}\,2$ and ${\cal N}{=}\,4$ supersymmetric extensions of the their hyperbolic/trigonometric Calogero-Sutherland cousins. The bosonic core of these models are the standard Calogero-Sutherland hyperbolic/trigonometric systems.

New ${\cal N}{=}\,2$ superspace Calogero models

Starting from the Hamiltonian formulation of ${\cal N}{=}\,2$ supersymmetric Calogero models associated with the classical $A_n, B_n, C_n$ and $D_n$ series and their hyperbolic/trigonometric cousins, we provide their superspace description. The key ingredients include $n$ bosonic and $2n(n{-}1)$ fermionic ${\cal N}{=}\,2$ superfields, the latter being subject to a nonlinear chirality constraint. This constraint has a universal form valid for all Calogero models. With its help we find more general supercharges (and a superspace Lagrangian), which provide the ${\cal N}{=}\,2$ supersymmetrization for bosonic potentials with arbitrary repulsive two-body interactions.

On ${\cal N}{=}\,2$ supersymmetric Ruijsenaars-Schneider models

We construct an ${\cal N}{=}\,2$ supersymmetric extension of $n$-particle Ruijsenaars-Schneider models. The guiding feature is a deformation of the phase space. The supercharges have a "free" form linear in the fermions but produce an interacting four-fermion Hamiltonian. A field-dependent unitary transformation maps to standard fermions obeying conventional Poisson brackets. In this frame, the supercharges and Hamiltonian have long "fermionic tails". We also comment on previous attempts in this direction.

On rational electromagnetic fields

We employ a recently developed method for constructing rational electromagnetic field configurations in Minkowski space to investigate several properties of these source-free finite-action Maxwell ("knot") solutions. The construction takes place on the Penrose diagram but uses features of de Sitter space, in particular its isometry group. This admits a classification of all knot solutions in terms of $S^3$ harmonics, labelled by a spin $2j\in{\mathbb N}_0$, which in fact provides a complete "knot basis" of finite-action Maxwell fields. We display a $j{=}1$ example, compute the energy for arbitrary spin-$j$ configurations, derive a linear relation between spin and helicity and characterize the subspace of null fields. Finally, we present an expression for the electromagnetic flux at null infinity and demonstrate its equality with the total energy.

Perturbative linearization of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory

Supersymmetric gauge theories are characterized by the existence of a transformation of the bosonic fields (Nicolai map) such that the Jacobi determinant of the transformation equals the product of the Matthews-Salam-Seiler and Faddeev-Popov determinants. This transformation had been worked out to second order in the coupling constant. In this paper, we extend this result (and the framework itself) to third order in the coupling constant. A diagrammatic approach in terms of tree diagrams, aiming to extend this map to arbitrary orders, is outlined. This formalism bypasses entirely the use of anti-commuting variables, as well as issues concerning the (non-)existence of off-shell formulations for these theories. It thus offers a fresh perspective on supersymmetric gauge theories and, in particular, the ubiquitous $\mathcal N{=}\,4$ theory.

Higher-derivative superparticle in AdS$_3$ space

Employing the coset approach we construct component actions for a superparticle moving in AdS$_3$ with $N{=}(2,0)$, $D{=}3$ supersymmetry partially broken to $N{=}2$, $d{=}1$. These actions may contain higher time-derivative terms, which are chosen to possess the same (super)symmetries as the free superparticle. In terms of the nonlinear-realization superfields, the component actions always take a simpler form when written in terms of covariant Cartan forms. We also consider in detail the reduction to the nonrelativistic case and construct the corresponding action a Newton-Hooke superparticle and its higher-derivative generalizations. The structure of these higher time-derivative generalizations is completely fixed by invariance under the supersymmetric Newton-Hooke algebra extended by two central charges.

Minimal realization of $\ell$-conformal Galilei algebra, Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillators and their deformation

We present the minimal realization of the $\ell$-conformal Galilei group in 2+1 dimensions on a single complex field. The simplest Lagrangians yield the complex Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillator equations. We introduce a minimal deformation of the $\ell$=1/2 conformal Galilei (a.k.a. Schrödinger) algebra and construct the corresponding invariant actions. Based on a new realization of the d=1 conformal group, we find a massive extension of the near-horizon Kerr-dS/AdS metric.

Sasakian quiver gauge theories and instantons on Calabi-Yau cones

We consider SU(2)-equivariant dimensional reduction of Yang-Mills theory on manifolds of the form $M\times S^3/Γ$, where $M$ is a smooth manifold and $S^3/Γ$ is a three-dimensional Sasaki-Einstein orbifold. We obtain new quiver gauge theories on $M$ whose quiver bundles are based on the affine ADE Dynkin diagram associated to $Γ$. We relate them to those arising through translationally-invariant dimensional reduction over the associated Calabi-Yau cones $C(S^3/Γ)$ which are based on McKay quivers and ADHM matrix models, and to those arising through SU(2)-equivariant dimensional reduction over the leaf spaces of the characteristic foliations of $S^3/Γ$ which are Kähler orbifolds of $\mathbb{C} P^1$ whose quiver bundles are based on the unextended Dynkin diagram corresponding to $Γ$. We use Nahm equations to describe the vacua of SU(2)-equivariant quiver gauge theories on the cones as moduli spaces of spherically symmetric instantons. We relate them to the Nakajima quiver varieties which can be realized as Higgs branches of the worldvolume quiver gauge theories on D$p$-branes probing D$(p+4)$-branes which wrap an ALE space, and to the moduli spaces of spherically symmetric solutions in putative non-abelian generalizations of two-dimensional affine Toda field theories.

Sasakian quiver gauge theories and instantons on the conifold

We consider Spin(4)-equivariant dimensional reduction of Yang-Mills theory on manifolds of the form $M^d \times T^{1,1}$, where $M^d$ is a smooth manifold and $T^{1,1}$ is a five-dimensional Sasaki-Einstein manifold Spin(4)/U(1). We obtain new quiver gauge theories on $M^d$ extending those induced via reduction over the leaf spaces $\mathbb{C}P^1 \times \mathbb{C}P^1$ in $T^{1,1}$. We describe the Higgs branches of these quiver gauge theories as moduli spaces of Spin(4)-equivariant instantons on the conifold which is realized as the metric cone over $T^{1,1}$. We give an explicit construction of these moduli spaces as Kähler quotients.

Spherical Calogero model with oscillator/Coulomb potential: quantum case

We consider the quantum mechanics of Calogero models in an oscillator or Coulomb potential on the N-dimensional sphere. Their Hamiltonians are obtained by an appropriate Dunkl deformation of the oscillator/Coulomb system on the sphere and its restriction to (Coxeter reflection) symmetric wave functions. By the same method we also find the symmetry generators and compute their algebras.

SU(2|2) supersymmetric mechanics

We introduce a new kind of non-relativistic ${\cal N}{=}\,8$ supersymmetric mechanics, associated with worldline realizations of the supergroup $SU(2|2)$ treated as a deformation of flat ${\cal N}{=}\,8$, $d{=}1$ supersymmetry. Various worldline $SU(2|2)$ superspaces are constructed as coset manifolds of this supergroup, and the corresponding superfield techniques are developed. For the off-shell $SU(2|2)$ multiplets $({\bf 3,8,5})$, $({\bf 4,8,4})$ and $({\bf 5,8,3})$, we construct and analyze the most general superfield and component actions. Common features are mass oscillator-type terms proportional to the deformation parameter and a trigonometric realization of the superconformal group $OSp(4^*|4)$ in the conformal cases. For the simplest $({\bf 5, 8, 3})$ model the quantization is performed.

Superconformal SU(1,1|n) mechanics

Recent years have seen an upsurge of interest in dynamical realizations of the superconformal group SU(1,1|2) in mechanics. Remarking that SU(1,1|2) is a particular member of a chain of supergroups SU(1,1|n) parametrized by an integer n, here we begin a systematic study of SU(1,1|n) multi-particle mechanics. A representation of the superconformal algebra su(1,1|n) is constructed on the phase space spanned by m copies of the (1,2n,2n-1) supermultiplet. We show that the dynamics is governed by two prepotentials V and F, and the Witten-Dijkgraaf-Verlinde-Verlinde equation for F shows up as a consequence of a more general fourth-order equation. All solutions to the latter in terms of root systems reveal decoupled models only. An extension of the dynamical content of the (1,2n,2n-1) supermultiplet by angular variables in a way similar to the SU(1,1|2) case is problematic.

Superstring limit of Yang-Mills theories

It was pointed out by Shifman and Yung that the critical superstring on $X^{10}={\mathbb R}^4\times Y^6$, where $Y^6$ is the resolved conifold, appears as an effective theory for a U(2) Yang-Mills-Higgs system with four fundamental Higgs scalars defined on $Σ_2\times{\mathbb R}^2$, where $Σ_2$ is a two-dimensional Lorentzian manifold. Their Yang-Mills model supports semilocal vortices on ${\mathbb R}^2\subsetΣ_2\times{\mathbb R}^2$ with a moduli space $X^{10}$. When the moduli of slowly moving thin vortices depend on the coordinates of $Σ_2$, the vortex strings can be identified with critical fundamental strings. We show that similar results can be obtained for the low-energy limit of pure Yang-Mills theory on $Σ_2\times T^2_p$, where $T^2_p$ is a two-dimensional torus with a puncture $p$. The solitonic vortices of Shifman and Yung then get replaced by flat connections. Various ten-dimensional superstring target spaces can be obtained as moduli spaces of flat connections on $T^2_p$, depending on the choice of the gauge group. The full Green-Schwarz sigma model requires extending the gauge group to a supergroup and augmenting the action with a topological term.

Instantons on conical half-flat 6-manifolds

We present a general procedure to construct 6-dimensional manifolds with SU(3)-structure from SU(2)-structure 5-manifolds. We thereby obtain half-flat cylinders and sine-cones over 5-manifolds with Sasaki-Einstein SU(2)-structure. They are nearly Kahler in the special case of sine-cones over Sasaki-Einstein 5-manifolds. Both half-flat and nearly Kahler 6-manifolds are prominent in flux compactifications of string theory. Subsequently, we investigate instanton equations for connections on vector bundles over these half-flat manifolds. A suitable ansatz for gauge fields on these 6-manifolds reduces the instanton equation to a set of matrix equations. We finally present some of its solutions and discuss the instanton configurations obtained this way.

On Asteroid Engineering

I pose the question of maximal Newtonian surface gravity on a homogeneous body of a given mass and volume but with variable shape. In other words, given an amount of malleable material of uniform density, how should one shape it in order for a microscopic creature on its surface to experience the largest possible weight? After evaluating the weight on an arbitrary cylinder, at the axis and at the equator and comparing it to that on a spherical ball, I solve the variational problem to obtain the shape which optimizes the surface gravity in some location. The boundary curve of the corresponding solid of revolution is given by $\ (x^2+z^2)^3-(4\,z)^2=0\ $ or $\ r(θ)=2\sqrt{\cosθ}$, and the maximal weight (at $x=z=0$) exceeds that on a solid sphere by a factor of $\frac35\root3\of5$, which is an increment of $2.6\%$. Finally, the values and the achievable maxima are computed for three other families of shapes.

Sasakian quiver gauge theories and instantons on cones over lens 5-spaces

We consider SU(3)-equivariant dimensional reduction of Yang-Mills theory over certain cyclic orbifolds of the 5-sphere which are Sasaki-Einstein manifolds. We obtain new quiver gauge theories extending those induced via reduction over the leaf spaces of the characteristic foliation of the Sasaki-Einstein structure, which are projective planes. We describe the Higgs branches of these quiver gauge theories as moduli spaces of spherically symmetric instantons which are SU(3)-equivariant solutions to the Hermitian Yang-Mills equations on the associated Calabi-Yau cones, and further compare them to moduli spaces of translationally-invariant instantons on the cones. We provide an explicit unified construction of these moduli spaces as Kähler quotients and show that they have the same cyclic orbifold singularities as the cones over the lens 5-spaces.

Sigma models for genuinely non-geometric backgrounds

The existence of genuinely non-geometric backgrounds, i.e. ones without geometric dual, is an important question in string theory. In this paper we examine this question from a sigma model perspective. First we construct a particular class of Courant algebroids as protobialgebroids with all types of geometric and non-geometric fluxes. For such structures we apply the mathematical result that any Courant algebroid gives rise to a 3D topological sigma model of the AKSZ type and we discuss the corresponding 2D field theories. It is found that these models are always geometric, even when both 2-form and 2-vector fields are neither vanishing nor inverse of one another. Taking a further step, we suggest an extended class of 3D sigma models, whose world volume is embedded in phase space, which allow for genuinely non-geometric backgrounds. Adopting the doubled formalism such models can be related to double field theory, albeit from a world sheet perspective.

Sigma-model limit of Yang-Mills instantons in higher dimensions

We consider the Hermitian Yang-Mills (instanton) equations for connections on vector bundles over a 2n-dimensional Kähler manifold X which is a product Y x Z of p- and q-dimensional Riemannian manifold Y and Z with p+q=2n. We show that in the adiabatic limit, when the metric in the Z direction is scaled down, the gauge instanton equations on Y x Z become sigma-model instanton equations for maps from Y to the moduli space M (target space) of gauge instantons on Z if q>= 4. For q<4 we get maps from Y to the moduli space M of flat connections on Z. Thus, the Yang-Mills instantons on Y x Z converge to sigma-model instantons on Y while Z shrinks to a point. Put differently, for small volume of Z, sigma-model instantons on Y with target space M approximate Yang-Mills instantons on Y x Z.

Supermembrane limit of Yang-Mills theory

We consider Yang-Mills theory with $N{=}1$ super translation group in eleven auxiliary dimensions as the structure group. The gauge theory is defined on a direct product manifold $Σ_3\times S^1$, where $Σ_3$ is a three-dimensional Lorentzian manifold and $S^1$ is a circle. We show that in the infrared limit, when the metric on $S^1$ is scaled down, the Yang-Mills action supplemented by a Wess-Zumino-type term reduces to the action of an M2-brane.

The tetrahexahedric angular Calogero model

The spherical reduction of the rational Calogero model (of type $A_{n-1}$ and after removing the center of mass) is considered as a maximally superintegrable quantum system, which describes a particle on the $(n{-}2)$-sphere subject to a very particular potential. We present a detailed analysis of the simplest non-separable case, $n{=}4$, whose potential is singular at the edges of a spherical tetrahexahedron. A complete set of independent conserved charges and of Hamiltonian intertwiners is constructed, and their algebra is elucidated. They arise from the ring of polynomials in Dunkl-deformed angular momenta, by classifying the subspaces invariant and antiinvariant under all Weyl reflections, respectively.

Yang-Mills moduli space in the adiabatic limit

We consider the Yang-Mills equations for a matrix gauge group $G$ inside the future light cone of 4-dimensional Minkowski space, which can be viewed as a Lorentzian cone $C(H^3)$ over the 3-dimensional hyperbolic space $H^3$. Using the conformal equivalence of $C(H^3)$ and the cylinder $R\times H^3$, we show that, in the adiabatic limit when the metric on $H^3$ is scaled down, classical Yang-Mills dynamics is described by geodesic motion in the infinite-dimensional group manifold $C^\infty (S^2_\infty,G)$ of smooth maps from the boundary 2-sphere $S^2_\infty=\partial H^3$ into the gauge group $G$.

Auxiliary tensor fields for Sp(2,R) self-duality

The coset Sp(2,R)/U(1) is parametrized by two real scalar fields. We generalize the formalism of auxiliary tensor (bispinor) fields in U(1) self-dual nonlinear models of abelian gauge fields to the case of Sp(2,R) self-duality. In this new formulation, Sp(2,R) duality of the nonlinear scalar-gauge equations of motion is equivalent to an Sp(2,R) invariance of the auxiliary interaction. We derive this result in two different ways, aiming at its further application to supersymmetric theories. We also consider an extension to interactions with higher derivatives.

Dirac structures on nilmanifolds and coexistence of fluxes

We study some aspects of the generalized geometry of nilmanifolds and examine to which extent different types of fluxes can coexist on them. Nilmanifolds constitute a class of homogeneous spaces which are interesting in string compactifications with fluxes since they carry geometric flux by construction. They are generalized Calabi-Yau spaces and therefore simple examples of generalized geometry at work. We identify and classify Dirac structures on nilmanifolds, which are maximally isotropic subbundles closed under the Courant bracket. In the presence of non-vanishing fluxes, these structures are twisted and closed under appropriate extensions of the Courant bracket. Twisted Dirac structures on a nilmanifold may carry multiple coexistent fluxes of any type. We also show how dual Dirac structures combine to Courant algebroids and work out an explicit example where all types of generalized fluxes coexist. These results may be useful in the context of general flux compactifications in string theory.

Instantons in six dimensions and twistors

Recently, conformal field theories in six dimensions were discussed from the twistorial point of view. In particular, it was demonstrated that the twistor transform between chiral zero-rest-mass fields and cohomology classes on twistor space can be generalized from four to six dimensions. On the other hand, the possibility of generalizing the correspondence between instanton gauge fields and holomorphic bundles over twistor space is questionable. It was shown by Saemann and Wolf that holomorphic line bundles over the canonical twistor space Tw(X) (defined as a bundle of almost complex structures over the six-dimensional manifold X) correspond to pure-gauge Maxwell potentials, i.e. the twistor transform fails. On the example of X=CP^3 we show that there exists a twistor correspondence between Abelian or non-Abelian Yang-Mills instantons on CP^3 and holomorphic bundles over complex submanifolds of Tw(CP^3), but it is not so efficient as in the four-dimensional case because the twistor transform does not parametrize instantons by unconstrained holomorphic data as it does in four dimensions.

Instantons on sine-cones over Sasakian manifolds

We investigate instantons on sine-cones over Sasaki-Einstein and 3-Sasakian manifolds. It is shown that these conical Einstein manifolds are K"ahler with torsion (KT) manifolds admitting Hermitian connections with totally antisymmetric torsion. Furthermore, a deformation of the metric on the sine-cone over 3-Sasakian manifolds allows one to introduce a hyper-K"ahler with torsion (HKT) structure. In the large-volume limit these KT and HKT spaces become Calabi-Yau and hyper-K"ahler conifolds, respectively. We construct gauge connections on complex vector bundles over conical KT and HKT manifolds which solve the instanton equations for Yang-Mills fields in higher dimensions.

Nonlinear supersymmetry in the quantum Calogero model

It is long known that the rational Calogero model describing n identical particles on a line with inverse-square mutual interaction potential is quantum superintegrable. We review the (nonlinear) algebra of the conserved quantum charges and the intertwiners which relate the Liouville charges at couplings g and g+1. For integer values of g, these intertwiners give rise to additional conserved charges commuting with all Liouville charges and known since the 1990s. We give a direct construction of such a charge, the unique one being totally antisymmetric under particle permutations. It is of order n(n-1)(2g-1)/2 in the momenta and squares to a polynomial in the Liouville charges. With a natural Z_2 grading, this charge extends the algebra of conserved charges to a nonlinear supersymmetric one. We provide explicit expressions for intertwiners, charges and their algebra in the cases of two, three and four particles.

Order $α'$ heterotic domain walls with warped nearly Kähler geometry

We consider 1+3-dimensional domain wall solutions of heterotic supergravity on a six-dimensional warped nearly Kähler manifold $X_6$ in the presence of gravitational and gauge instantons of tanh-kink type as constructed in [arXiv:1109.3552]. We include first order $α'$ corrections to the heterotic supergravity action, which imply a non-trivial Yang-Mills sector and Bianchi identity. We present a variety of solutions, depending on the choice of instantons, for the special case in which the SU(3) structure on $X_6$ satisfies $W_1^-=0$. The solutions preserve two real supercharges, which corresponds to $\mathcal{N}{=}1/2$ supersymmetry from the four-dimensional point of view. Besides serving as a useful framework for collecting existing solutions, the formulation in terms of dynamic SU(3) structures utilized here allows us to obtain new solutions in as yet unexplored corners of the instanton configuration space. Our approach thus offers a unified description of the embedding of tanh-kink-type instantons into half-BPS solutions of heterotic supergravity where the internal six-dimensional manifold has a warped nearly Kähler geometry

Superintegrability of (generalized) Calogero models with oscillator or Coulomb potential

We deform N-dimensional (Euclidean, spherical and hyperbolic) oscillator and Coulomb systems, replacing their angular degrees of freedom by those of a generalized rational Calogero model. Using the action-angle description, it is established that maximal superintegrability is retained. For the rational Calogero model with Coulomb potential, we present all constants of motion via matrix model reduction. In particular, we construct the analog of the Runge-Lenz vector.

The structure of invariants in conformal mechanics

We investigate the integrals of motion of general conformal mechanical systems with and without confining harmonic potential as well as of the related angular subsystems, by employing the SL(2,R) algebra and its representations. In particular, via the tensor product of two representations we construct new integrals of motion from old ones. Furthermore, the temporally periodic observables (including the integrals) of the angular subsystem are explicitly related to those of the full system in a confining harmonic potential. The techniques are illustrated for the rational Calogero models and their angular subsystems, where they generalize known methods for obtaining conserved charges beyond the Liouville ones.

Auxiliary superfields in N=1 supersymmetric self-dual electrodynamics

We construct the general formulation of N=1 supersymmetric self-dual abelian gauge theory involving auxiliary chiral spinor superfields. Self-duality in this context is just U(N) invariance of the nonlinear interaction of the auxiliary superfields. Focusing on the U(1) case, we present the most general form of the U(1) invariant auxiliary interaction, consider a few instructive examples and show how to generate self-dual N=1 models with higher derivatives in this approach.

Exact BPS bound for noncommutative baby Skyrmions

The noncommutative baby Skyrme model is a Moyal deformation of the two-dimensional sigma model plus a Skyrme term, with a group-valued or Grassmannian target. Exact abelian solitonic solutions have been identified analytically in this model, with a singular commutative limit. Inside any given Grassmannian, we establish a BPS bound for the energy functional, which is saturated by these baby Skyrmions. This asserts their stability for unit charge, as we also test in second-order perturbation theory.

Field-dependent BRST transformations in Yang-Mills theory

We find an explicit form for the Jacobian of arbitrary field-dependent BRST transformations in Yang-Mills theory. For the functional-integral representation of the (gauge-fixed) Yang-Mills vacuum functional, such transformations merely amount to a precise change in the gauge-fixing functional. This proves the independence of the vacuum functional under any field-dependent BRST transformation. We also give a formula for the transformation parameter functional which generates a prescribed change of gauge and evaluate it for connecting two arbitrary R_xi gauges.

Gribov horizon beyond the Landau gauge

Gribov and Zwanziger proposed a modification of Yang-Mills theory in order to cure the Gribov copy problem. We employ field-dependent BRST transformations to generalize the Gribov-Zwanziger model from the Landau gauge to general R_xi gauges. The Gribov horizon functional is presented in explicit form, in both the non-local and local variants. Finally, we show how to reach any given gauge from the Landau one.

Heterotic G_2-manifold compactifications with fluxes and fermionic condensates

We consider flux compactifications of heterotic string theory in the presence of fermionic condensates on M_{1,2} times X_7 with both factors carrying a Killing spinor. In other words, M_{1,2} is either de Sitter, anti-de Sitter or Minkowski, and X_7 possesses a nearly parallel G_2-structure or has G_2-holonomy. We solve the complete set of field equations and the Bianchi identity to order alpha'. The latter is satisfied via a non-standard embedding by choosing the gauge field to be a G_2-instanton. It is shown that none of the solutions to the field equations is supersymmetric.

Higher-derivative N=4 superparticle in three-dimensional spacetime

Using the coset approach (nonlinear realization) we construct component actions for a superparticle in three-dimensional spacetime with N=4 supersymmetry partially broken to N=2. These actions may contain an anyonic term and the square of the first extrinsic worldline curvature. New Approach to Duality-Invariant Nonlinear Electrodynamics

We survey a new approach to the duality-invariant systems of nonlinear electrodynamics, based on introducing auxiliary bi-spinor fields. In this approach, the entire information about the given self-dual system is encoded in the U(1) invariant interaction of the auxiliary fields, while the standard self-dual Lagrangians appear on shell as a result of eliminating auxiliary fields by their equations of motion. Starting from the simplest U(1) duality, we show how this approach can be generalized to the U(N) duality (with N independent Maxwell field strengths), as well as to self-dual systems of {\cal N}=1 supersymmetric electrodynamics. Also, it works perfectly for self-dual systems with higher derivatives in the action.

On the Gribov problem in Yang-Mills theory

I briefly review the Gribov ambiguity of Yang-Mills theory, some of its features and attempts to control it, in particular the Gribov-Zwanziger proposal to restrict the functional integration in the Landau gauge to the Gribov region. This proposal is extended to an arbitrary gauge in such a way as to guarantee BRST invariance. The key insight is that any gauge change in the generating functional can be effected by a suitable field-dependent BRST transformation. I derive a simple analytic formula for the Jacobian of such a transformation, which yields an explicit recipe for the required transformation-parameter functional and allows for the computation of the Gribov horizon functional in any gauge, as I illustrate for the class of R_xi gauges.

On two-dimensional integrable models with a cubic or quartic integral of motion

Integrable two-dimensional models which possess an integral of motion cubic or quartic in velocities are governed by a single prepotential, which obeys a nonlinear partial differential equation. Taking into account the latter's invariance under continuous rescalings and a dihedral symmetry, we construct new integrable models with a cubic or quartic integral, each of which involves either one or two continuous parameters. A reducible case related to the two-dimensional wave equation is discussed as well. We conjecture a hidden D_{2n} dihedral symmetry for models with an integral of n-th order in the velocities.

Orbifold instantons, moment maps and Yang-Mills theory with sources

We revisit the problem of constructing instantons on ADE orbifolds R^4/Γand point out some subtle relations with the complex structure on the orbifold. We consider generalized instanton equations on R^4/Γwhich are BPS equations for the Yang-Mills equations with an external current. The relation between level sets of the moment maps in the hyper-Kaehler quotient construction of the instanton moduli space and sources in the Yang-Mills equations is discussed. We describe two types of spherically-symmetric Γ-equivariant connections on complex V-bundles over R^4/Γwhich are tailored to the way in which the orbifold group acts on the fibres. Some explicit abelian and nonabelian SU(2)-invariant solutions to the nstanton equations on the orbifold are worked out.

Target duality in N=8 superconformal mechanics and the coupling of dual pairs

We couple dual pairs of N=8 superconformal mechanics with conical targets of dimension d and 8-d. The superconformal coupling generates an oscillator-type potential on each of the two target factors, with a frequency depending on the respective dual coordinates. In the case of the inhomogeneous (3,8,5) model, which entails a monopole background, it is necessary to add an extra supermultiplet of constants for half of the supersymmetry. The N=4 analog, joining an inhomogeneous (1,4,3) with a (3,4,1) multiplet, is also analyzed in detail.

The quantum angular Calogero-Moser model

The rational Calogero-Moser model of n one-dimensional quantum particles with inverse-square pairwise interactions (in a confining harmonic potential) is reduced along the radial coordinate of R^n to the `angular Calogero-Moser model' on the sphere S^{n-1}. We discuss the energy spectrum of this quantum system, its degeneracies and the eigenstates. The spectral flow with the coupling parameter yields isospectrality for integer increments. Decoupling the center of mass before effecting the spherical reduction produces a `relative angular Calogero-Moser model', which is analyzed in parallel. We generalize our considerations to the Calogero-Moser models associated with Coxeter groups. Finally, we attach spin degrees of freedom to our particles and extend the results to the spin-Calogero system.

Heterotic string plus five-brane systems with asymptotic AdS3

We present NS1+NS5-brane solutions of heterotic supergravity on curved geometries. They interpolate between a near horizon AdS3 x X^k x T^{7-k} region and R^{1,1} x c(X^k) x T^{7-k}, where X^k (with k = 3,5,6,7) is a k-dimensional geometric Killing spinor manifold, c(X^k) its Ricci-flat cone and T^{7-k} a (7-k)-torus. The solutions require first order alpha'-corrections to the field equations, and special point-like instantons play an important role, whose singular support is a calibrated submanifold wrapped by the NS5-brane. It is also possible to add a gauge anti-5-brane. We determine the super isometries of the near horizon geometry which are supposed to appear as symmetries of the holographically dual two-dimensional conformal field theory.

Instantons and Chern-Simons flows in 6, 7 and 8 dimensions

The existence of K-instantons on a cylinder M^7 = R_tau x K/H over a homogeneous nearly K"ahler 6-manifold K/H requires a conformally parallel or a cocalibrated G_2-structure on M^7. The generalized anti-self-duality on M^7 implies a Chern-Simons flow on K/H which runs between instantons on the coset. For K-equivariant connections, the torsionful Yang-Mills equation reduces to a particular quartic dynamics for a Newtonian particle on C. When the torsion corresponds to one of the G_2-structures, this dynamics follows from a gradient or hamiltonian flow equation, respectively. We present the analytic (kink-type) solutions and plot numerical non-BPS solutions for general torsion values interpolating between the instantonic ones.

Instantons on the six-sphere and twistors

We consider the six-sphere S^6=G_2/SU(3) and its twistor space Z=G_2/U(2) associated with the SU(3)-structure on S^6. It is shown that a Hermitian Yang-Mills connection (instanton) on a smooth vector bundle over S^6 is equivalent to a flat partial connection on a vector bundle over the twistor space Z. The relation with Tian's tangent instantons on R^7 and their twistor description are briefly discussed.

Many-particle mechanics with D(2,1;alpha) superconformal symmetry

We overcome the barrier of constructing N=4 superconformal models in one space dimension for more than three particles. The D(2,1;alpha) superalgebra of our systems is realized on the coordinates and momenta of the particles, their superpartners and one complex pair of harmonic variables. The models are determined by two prepotentials, F and U, which must obey the WDVV and a Killing-type equation plus homogeneity conditions. We investigate permutation-symmetric solutions, with and without translation invariance. Models based on deformed A_n and BCD_n root systems are constructed for any value of alpha, and exceptional F_n-type and super root systems admit solutions as well. Translation-invariant mechanics occurs for any number of particles at alpha=-1/2 (osp(4|2) invariance as a degenerate limit) and for four particles at arbitrary alpha (three series).

N=2 supersymmetric S^2 -> CP^3 -> S^4 fibration viewed as superparticle mechanics

We discuss a Hamiltonian reduction procedure that relates the mechanics of an N=2 particle on CP^3 with the motion of such a superparticle on S^4 in the presence of an instanton background. The key ingredients of the bosonic fibration S^2 -> CP^3 -> S^4 are recalled from the viewpoint of particle mechanics on CP^3. We describe an N=2 supersymmetric extension which allows for a Hamiltonian reduction. The S^2 degrees of freedom are encoded in the supercharges via SU(2) currents. Finally, we present the Hamiltonian of our system and its superfield Lagrangian.

Nahm equations in supersymmetric mechanics

We elaborate on a novel model of N=4 supersymmetric mechanics with extra spin variables. A dynamical linear (1,4,3) multiplet is coupled to a "semi-dynamical" linear (3,4,1) multiplet representing spin degrees of freedom in a Wess-Zumino action. The unique coupling of these two multiplets relates the dynamical bosonic variable to an arbitrary harmonic function of the SU(2) triplet of spin variables. As we prove at the classical and quantum level, N=4 supersymmetry is equivalent to the Nahm equations for the spin variables, with the dynamical boson as evolution parameter. We treat in detail the one- and two-monopole as well as some special multi-monopole configurations. While one monopole exhibits superconformal OSp(4|2) symmetry and was worked out previously, only N=4, d=1 Poincare supersymmetry survives for multi-monopole configurations.

Nearly Kähler heterotic compactifications with fermion condensates

We revisit AdS_4 heterotic compactifications on nearly Kähler manifolds in the presence of H-flux and certain fermion condensates. Unlike previous studies, we do not assume the vanishing of the supersymmetry variations. Instead we determine the full equations of motion originating from the ten-dimensional action, and subsequently we provide explicit solutions to them on nearly Kähler manifolds at first order in alpha'. The Bianchi identity is also taken into account in order to guarantee the absence of all anomalies. In the presence of H-flux, which is identified with the torsion of the internal space, as well as of fermion condensates in the gaugino and dilatino sectors, new solutions are determined. These solutions provide a full classification of consistent backgrounds of heterotic supergravity under our assumptions. All the new solutions are non-supersymmetric, while previously known supersymmetric ones are recovered too. Our results indicate that fully consistent (supersymmetric or not) heterotic vacua on nearly Kähler manifolds are scarce, even on AdS_4, and they can be completely classified.

Noncommutative deformation of the Ward metric

The moduli-space metric in the static non-Abelian charge-two sector of the Moyal-deformed CP^1 sigma model in 1+2 dimensions is analyzed. After recalling the commutative results of Ward and Ruback and the zeta-regularized construction of the noncommutative K"ahler potential due to the second author, explicit expressions and asymptotics for it are presented and discussed in different regions of the moduli space. Along two curves in the moduli space the potential can be calculated analytically. In the region of solitons known as "ring-like", perturbation theory is used. In the region of "lump-like" solitons, both perturbation theory and the zeta-function approach are employed. While the strong noncommutativity limit is smooth and under control, the commutative limit in the two-lump region remains a semiclassical challenge.

The spherical sector of the Calogero model as a reduced matrix model

We investigate the matrix-model origin of the spherical sector of the rational Calogero model and its constants of motion. We develop a diagrammatic technique which allows us to find explicit expressions of the constants of motion and calculate their Poisson brackets. In this way we obtain all functionally independent constants of motion to any given order in the momenta. Our technique is related to the valence-bond basis for singlet states.

The classical dynamics of the two propagating bosons is restricted to a (warped) half-plane and bounded. We numerically inspect typical trajectories of this special particle.

Chern-Simons flows on Aloff-Wallach spaces and Spin(7)-instantons

Due to their explicit construction, Aloff-Wallach spaces are prominent in flux compactifications. They carry G_2-structures and admit the G_2-instanton equations, which are natural BPS equations for Yang-Mills instantons on seven-manifolds and extremize a Chern-Simons-type functional. We consider the Chern-Simons flow between different G_2-instantons on Aloff-Wallach spaces, which is equivalent to Spin(7)-instantons on a cylinder over them. For a general SU(3)-equivariant gauge connection, the generalized instanton equations turn into gradient-flow equations on C^3 x R^2, with a particular cubic superpotential. For the simplest member of the Aloff-Wallach family (with 3-Sasakian structure) we present an explicit instanton solution of tanh-like shape.

Integrable generalizations of oscillator and Coulomb systems via action-angle variables

Oscillator and Coulomb systems on N-dimensional spaces of constant curvature can be generalized by replacing their angular degrees of freedom with a compact integrable (N-1)-dimensional system. We present the action-angle formulation of such models in terms of theradial degree of freedom and the action-angle variables of the angular subsystem. As an example, we construct the spherical and pseudospherical generalization of the two-dimensional superintegrable models introduced by Tremblay, Turbiner and Winternitz and by Post and Winternitz. We demonstrate the superintegrability of these systems and give their hidden constant of motion.

Is soft breaking of BRST symmetry consistent?

A definition of soft breaking of BRST symmetry in the field-antifield formalism is proposed, valid for general gauge theories and arbitrary gauge fixing. The Ward identities for the generating functionals of Green's functions are derived, and their gauge dependence is investigated. We discuss the Gribov-Zwanziger action for the one-parameter family of R_xi gauges. It is argued that gauge theories with a soft breaking of BRST symmetry are inconsistent.

N=4 Multi-Particle Mechanics, WDVV Equation and Roots

We review the relation of N=4 superconformal multi-particle models on the real line to the WDVV equation and an associated linear equation for two prepotentials, F and U. The superspace treatment gives another variant of the integrability problem, which we also reformulate as a search for closed flat Yang-Mills connections. Three- and four-particle solutions are presented. The covector ansatz turns the WDVV equation into an algebraic condition, for which we give a formulation in terms of partial isometries. Three ideas for classifying WDVV solutions are developed: ortho-polytopes, hypergraphs, and matroids. Various examples and counterexamples are displayed.

Yang-Mills instantons on cones and sine-cones over nearly Kähler manifolds

We present a unified eight-dimensional approach to instanton equations on several seven-dimensional manifolds associated to a six-dimensional homogeneous nearly Kähler manifold. The cone over the sine-cone on a nearly Kähler manifold has holonomy group Spin(7) and can be foliated by submanifolds with either holonomy group G_2, a nearly parallel G_2-structure or a cocalibrated G_2-structure. We show that there is a G_2-instanton on each of these seven-dimensional manifolds which gives rise to a Spin(7)-instanton in eight dimensions. The well-known octonionic instantons on R^7 and R^8 are contained in our construction as the special cases of an instanton on the cone and on the cone over the sine-cone, both over the six-sphere, respectively.

Action-angle variables for dihedral systems on the circle

A nonrelativistic particle on a circle and subject to a cos^{-2}(k phi) potential is related to the two-dimensional (dihedral) Coxeter system I_2(k), for k in N. For such `dihedral systems' we construct the action-angle variables and establish a local equivalence with a free particle on the circle. We perform the quantization of these systems in the action-angle variables and discuss the supersymmetric extension of this procedure. By allowing radial motion one obtains related two-dimensional systems, including A_2, BC_2 and G_2 three-particle rational Calogero models on R, which we also analyze.

Heterotic compactifications on nearly Kähler manifolds

We consider compactifications of heterotic supergravity on anti-de Sitter space, with a six-dimensional nearly K"ahler manifold as the internal space. Completing the model proposed by Frey and Lippert with the particular choice of SU(3)/U(1)xU(1) for the internal manifold, we show that it satisfies not only the supersymmetry constraints but also the equations of motion with string corrections of order alpha'. Furthermore, we present a non-supersymmetric model. In both solutions we find confirmed a recent result of Ivanov on the connection used for anomaly cancellation. Interestingly, the volume of the internal space is fixed by the supersymmetry constraints and/or the equations of motion.

Invariants of the spherical sector in conformal mechanics

A direct relation is established between the constants of motion for conformal mechanics and those for its spherical part. N=4 Supersymmetry and the BPST Instanton

In this paper we construct the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations of N=4 supersymmetric systems describing the motion of an isospin particle on a conformally flat four-manifold with SO(4) isometry carrying the non-Abelian field of a BPST instanton. The conformal factor can be specified to yield various particular systems, such as superconformally invariant mechanics as well as a particle on the four-sphere, the pseudosphere or on R x S^3. The isospin degrees of freedom arise as bosonic components of an additional fermionic N=4 supermultiplet, whose other components are rendered auxiliary by a nonlocal redefinition. Our on-shell component action coincides with the one recently proposed in arXiv:0912.3289.

New D(2,1;alpha) Mechanics with Spin Variables

We elaborate on a novel superconformal mechanics model possessing D(2,1;alpha) symmetry and involving extra U(2) spin variables. It is the one-particle case of the N=4 superconformal matrix model recently proposed in arXiv:0812.4276 [hep-th], and it generalizes to arbitrary alpha\neq0 the OSp(4|2) superconformal mechanics of arXiv:0905.4951 [hep-th]. As in the latter case, the U(2) spin variables are described by a Wess-Zumino action and define the first Hopf map S^3 -> S^2 in the target space. Upon quantization, they represent a fuzzy sphere. We find the classical and quantum generators of the D(2,1;alpha) superalgebra and their realization on the physical states. The super wavefunction encompasses various multiplets of the SU(2)_R and SU(2)_L subgroups of D(2,1;alpha), with fixed isospins. The conformal potential is determined by the external magnetic field in the Wess-Zumino term, whose amplitude is quantized like in the OSp(4|2) case. As a byproduct, we reveal new invariant subspaces in the enveloping algebra of D(2,1;alpha) for our quantum realization.

New Super Calogero Models and OSp(4|2) Superconformal Mechanics

We report on the new approach to constructing superconformal extensions of the Calogero-type systems with an arbitrary number of involved particles. It is based upon the superfield gauging of non-abelian isometries of some supersymmetric matrix models. Among its applications, we focus on the new N=4 superconformal system yielding the U(2) spin Calogero model in the bosonic sector, and the one-particle case of this system, which is a new OSp(4|2) superconformal mechanics with non-dynamical U(2) spin variables. The characteristic feature of these models is that the strength of the conformal inverse-square potential is quantized.

Yang-Mills flows on nearly Kaehler manifolds and G_2-instantons

We consider Lie(G)-valued G-invariant connections on bundles over spaces G/H, RxG/H and R^2xG/H, where G/H is a compact nearly Kaehler six-dimensional homogeneous space, and the manifolds RxG/H and R^2xG/H carry G_2- and Spin(7)-structures, respectively. By making a G-invariant ansatz, Yang-Mills theory with torsion on RxG/H is reduced to Newtonian mechanics of a particle moving in a plane with a quartic potential. For particular values of the torsion, we find explicit particle trajectories, which obey first-order gradient or hamiltonian flow equations. In two cases, these solutions correspond to anti-self-dual instantons associated with one of two G_2-structures on RxG/H. It is shown that both G_2-instanton equations can be obtained from a single Spin(7)-instanton equation on R^2xG/H.

Yang-Mills instantons and dyons on homogeneous G_2-manifolds

We consider Lie G-valued Yang-Mills fields on the space R x G/H, where G/H is a compact nearly K"ahler six-dimensional homogeneous space, and the manifold R x G/H carries a G_2-structure. After imposing a general G-invariance condition, Yang-Mills theory with torsion on R x G/H is reduced to Newtonian mechanics of a particle moving in R^6, R^4 or R^2 under the influence of an inverted double-well-type potential for the cases G/H = SU(3)/U(1)xU(1), Sp(2)/Sp(1)xU(1) or G_2/SU(3), respectively. We analyze all critical points and present analytical and numerical kink- and bounce-type solutions, which yield G-invariant instanton configurations on those cosets. Periodic solutions on S^1 x G/H and dyons on iR x G/H are also given.

A new class of solutions to the WDVV equation

The known prepotential solutions F to the Witten-Dijkgraaf-Verlinde-Verlinde (WDVV) equation are parametrized by a set {alpha} of covectors. This set may be taken to be indecomposable, since F_{alpha oplus beta}=F_{alpha}+F_{beta}. We couple mutually orthogonal covector sets by adding so-called radial terms to the standard form of F. The resulting reducible covector set yields a new type of irreducible solution to the WDVV equation.

Hidden symmetries of integrable conformal mechanical systems

We split the generic conformal mechanical system into a "radial" and an "angular" part, where the latter is defined as the Hamiltonian system on the orbit of the conformal group, with the Casimir function in the role of the Hamiltonian. We reduce the analysis of the constants of motion of the full system to the study of certain differential equations on this orbit. For integrable mechanical systems, the conformal invariance renders them superintegrable, yielding an additional series of conserved quantities originally found by Wojciechowski in the rational Calogero model. Finally, we show that, starting from any N=4 supersymmetric "angular" Hamiltonian system one may construct a new system with full N=4 superconformal D(1,2;α) symmetry.

Noncommutative Baby Skyrmions

We subject the baby Skyrme model to a Moyal deformation, for unitary or Grassmannian target spaces and without a potential term. In the abelian case, the radial BPS configurations of the ordinary noncommutative sigma model also solve the baby Skyrme equation of motion. This gives a class of exact analytic noncommutative baby Skyrmions, which have a singular commutative limit but are stable against scaling due to the noncommutativity. We compute their energies, investigate their stability and determine the asymptotic two-Skyrmion interaction.

N=4 Mechanics, WDVV Equations and Polytopes

N=4 superconformal n-particle quantum mechanics on the real line is governed by two prepotentials, U and F, which obey a system of partial nonlinear differential equations generalizing the Witten-Dijkgraaf-Verlinde-Verlinde (WDVV) equation for F. The solutions are encoded by the finite Coxeter systems and certain deformations thereof, which can be encoded by particular polytopes. We provide A_n and B_3 examples in some detail. Turning on the prepotential U in a given F background is very constrained for more than three particles and nonzero central charge. The standard ansatz for U is shown to fail for all finite Coxeter systems. Three-particle models are more flexible and based on the dihedral root systems.

N=4 superconformal n-particle mechanics via superspace

We revisit the (untwisted) superfield approach to one-dimensional multi-particle systems with N=4 superconformal invariance. The requirement of a standard (flat) bosonic kinetic energy implies the existence of inertial (super-)coordinates, which is nontrivial beyond three particles. We formulate the corresponding integrability conditions, whose solution directly yields the superpotential, the two prepotentials and the bosonic potential. The structure equations for the two prepotentials, including the WDVV equation, follow automatically. The general solution for translation-invariant three-particle models is presented and illustrated with examples. For the four-particle case, we take advantage of known WDVV solutions to construct a D_3 and a B_3 model, thus overcoming a previously-found barrier regarding the bosonic potential. The general solution and classification remain a challenge.

Explicit results and plots are presented for the leading noncommutativity correction to the breather. Its temporal periodicity is unchanged.

Rank Two Quiver Gauge Theory, Graded Connections and Noncommutative Vortices

We consider equivariant dimensional reduction of Yang-Mills theory on K"ahler manifolds of the form M times CP^1 times CP^1. This induces a rank two quiver gauge theory on M which can be formulated as a Yang-Mills theory of graded connections on M. The reduction of the Yang-Mills equations on M times CP^1 times CP^1 induces quiver gauge theory equations on M and quiver vortex equations in the BPS sector. When M is the noncommutative space R_theta^{2n} both BPS and non-BPS solutions are obtained, and interpreted as states of D-branes. Using the graded connection formalism, we assign D0-brane charges in equivariant K-theory to the quiver vortex configurations. Some categorical properties of these quiver brane configurations are also described in terms of the corresponding quiver representations.

Time-Space Noncommutative Abelian Solitons

We demonstrate the construction of solitons for a time-space Moyal-deformed integrable U(n) sigma model (the Ward model) in 2+1 dimensions. These solitons cannot travel parallel to the noncommutative spatial direction. For the U(1) case, the rank-one single-soliton configuration is constructed explicitly and is singular in the commutative limit. The projection to 1+1 dimensions reduces it to a noncommutative instanton-like configuration. The latter is governed by a new integrable equation, which describes a Moyal-deformed sigma model with a particular Euclidean metric and a magnetic field.

Integrable Noncommutative Sine-Gordon Model

Requiring an infinite number of conserved local charges or the existence of an underlying linear system does not uniquely determine the Moyal deformation of 1+1 dimensional integrable field theories. As an example, the sine-Gordon model may be obtained by dimensional and algebraic reduction from 2+2 dimensional self-dual U(2) Yang-Mills through a 2+1 dimensional integrable U(2) sigma model, with some freedom in the noncommutative extension of this algebraic reduction. Relaxing the latter from U(2)->U(1) to U(2)->U(1)xU(1), we arrive at novel noncommutative sine-Gordon equations for a pair of scalar fields. The dressing method is employed to construct its multi-soliton solutions. Finally, we evaluate various tree-level amplitudes to demonstrate that our model possesses a factorizable and causal S-matrix in spite of its time-space noncommutativity.

Non-anticommutative deformation of N=(1,1) hypermultiplets

We study the SO(4)xSU(2) invariant and N=(1,0) supersymmetry-preserving nilpotent (non-anticommutative) Moyal deformation of hypermultiplets interacting with an abelian gauge multiplet, starting from their off-shell formulation in Euclidean N=(1,1) harmonic superspace. The deformed version of a neutral or a charged hypermultiplet corresponds to the `adjoint' or the `fundamental' representation of the deformed U(1) gauge group on the superfields involved. The neutral hypermultiplet action is invariant under N=(2,0) supersymmetry and describes a deformed N=(2,2) gauge theory. For both the neutral and the charged hypermultiplet we present the corresponding component actions and explicitly give the Seiberg-Witten-type transformations to the undeformed component fields. Mass terms for the hypermultiplets can be generated via the Scherk-Schwarz mechanism and Fayet-Iliopoulos term in analogy to the undeformed case.

Noncommutative Instantons in Higher Dimensions, Vortices and Topological K-Cycles

We construct explicit BPS and non-BPS solutions of the U(2k) Yang-Mills equations on the noncommutative space R^{2n}_θx S^2 with finite energy and topological charge. By twisting with a Dirac multi-monopole bundle over S^2, we reduce the Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau equations on R^{2n}_θx S^2 to vortex-type equations for a pair of U(k) gauge fields and a bi-fundamental scalar field on R^{2n}_θ. In the SO(3)-invariant case the vortices on R^{2n}_θdetermine multi-instantons on R^{2n}_θx S^2. We show that these solutions give natural physical realizations of Bott periodicity and vector bundle modification in topological K-homology, and can be interpreted as a blowing-up of D0-branes on R^{2n}_θinto spherical D2-branes on R^{2n}_θx S^2. In the generic case with broken rotational symmetry, we argue that the D0-brane charges on R^{2n}_θx S^2 provide a physical interpretation of the Adams operations in K-theory.

Noncommutative Multi-Instantons on R^{2n} x S^2

Generalizing self-duality on R^2 x S^2 to higher dimensions, we consider the Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau equations on R^{2n} x S^2 and their noncommutative deformation for the gauge group U(2). Imposing SO(3) invariance (up to gauge transformations) reduces these equations to vortex-type equations for an abelian gauge field and a complex scalar on R^{2n}_θ. For a special S^2-radius R depending on the noncommutativity θwe find explicit solutions in terms of shift operators. These vortex-like configurations on R^{2n}_θdetermine SO(3)-invariant multi-instantons on R^{2n}_θx S^2_R for R=R(θ). The latter may be interpreted as sub-branes of codimension 2n inside a coincident pair of noncommutative Dp-branes with an S^2 factor of suitable size.

Nonperturbative solutions to the nonlinear field equations in the NS sector of cubic as well as nonpolynomial superstring field theory can be obtained from a linear equation which includes a "spectral" parameter λand a coboundary operator Q(λ). We borrow a simple ansatz from the dressing method (for generating solitons in integrable field theories) and show that classical superstring fields can be constructed from any string field T subject merely to Q(λ)T=0. Closed N=2 Strings: Picture-Changing, Hidden Symmetries and SDG Hierarchy

We study the action of picture-changing and spectral flow operators on a ground ring of ghost number zero operators in the chiral BRST cohomology of the closed N=2 string and describe an infinite set of symmetry charges acting on physical states. The transformations of physical string states are compared with symmetries of self-dual gravity which is the effective field theory of the closed N=2 string. We derive all infinitesimal symmetries of the self-dual gravity equations in 2+2 dimensional spacetime and introduce an infinite hierarchy of commuting flows on the moduli space of self-dual metrics. The dependence on moduli parameters can be recovered by solving the equations of the SDG hierarchy associated with an infinite set of abelian symmetries generated recursively from translations. These non-local abelian symmetries are shown to coincide with the hidden abelian string symmetries responsible for the vanishing of most scattering amplitudes. Therefore, N=2 string theory "predicts" not only self-dual gravity but also the SDG hierarchy.

A wide class of N=2 reductions of the supersymmetric KP hierarchy in N=1 superspace is described. This class includes a new N=2 supersymmetric generalization of the Toda chain hierarchy. The Lax pair representations of the bosonic and fermionic flows, local and nonlocal Hamiltonians, finite and infinite discrete symmetries, first two Hamiltonian structures and the recursion operator of this hierarchy are constructed. Its secondary reduction to new N=2 supersymmetric modified KdV hierarchy is discussed.

Extended Self-Dual Yang-Mills from the N=2 String

We show that the physical degrees of freedom of the critical open string with N=2 superconformal symmetry on the worldsheet are described by a self-dual Yang-Mills field on a hyperspace parametrised by the coordinates of the target space R^{2,2} together with a commuting chiral spinor. A prepotential for the self-dual connection in the hyperspace generates the infinite tower of physical fields corresponding to the inequivalent pictures or spinor ghost vacua of this string. An action is presented for this tower, which describes consistent interactions amongst fields of arbitrarily high spin. An interesting truncation to a theory of five fields is seen to have no graphs of two or more loops.

Exact Black-Hole Solution With Self-Interacting Scalar Field

Einstein gravity minimally coupled to a self-interacting scalar field is investigated in the static and isotropic situation. We explicitly construct in partially closed form a new black-hole solution with exponentially decaying scalar hair. The symmetric interaction potential has both signs and a triple-well shape with a smooth but non-analytic minimum at vanishing field. We present numerical data as well as double series expansions around spatial infinity.

Integration Measure and Spectral Flow in the Critical N=2 String

I present the moduli space of the (2+2)-dimensional critical closed fermionic string with two world-sheet supersymmetries. The integration of fermionic and Maxwell moduli in the presence of punctures yields the string measure for n-point amplitudes at arbitrary genus and instanton number. Generalized picture-changing and spectral-flow operators emerge, connecting different instanton sectors. Tree and loop amplitudes are computed.

Semiclassical Approach to Finite-N Matrix Models

We reformulate the zero-dimensional hermitean one-matrix model as a (nonlocal) collective field theory, for finite~$N$. The Jacobian arising by changing variables from matrix eigenvalues to their density distribution is treated {\it exactly\/}. The semiclassical loop expansion turns out {\it not\/} to coincide with the (topological) ${1\over N}$~expansion, because the classical background has a non-trivial $N$-dependence. We derive a simple integral equation for the classical eigenvalue density, which displays strong non-perturbative behavior around $N\!=\!\infty$. This leads to IR singularities in the large-$N$ expansion, but UV divergencies appear as well, despite remarkable cancellations among the Feynman diagrams. We evaluate the free energy at the two-loop level and discuss its regularization. A simple example serves to illustrate the problems and admits explicit comparison with orthogonal polynomial results.
