A search for feebly-interacting particles in BB decays with missing energy at Belle

We present a search for an invisible hidden-sector particle Xinv X_{\rm{inv}}, produced in B0→Dˉ0XinvB^0 \to \bar{D}^0 X_{\rm{inv}} and B±→hXinvB^\pm\to h X_{\rm{inv}} decays, where h=π±h = π^\pm, K±K^\pm, Ds±D_{s}^\pm, p±p^\pm. The search is performed using e+e−e^+ e^- collision data recorded with the Belle detector, corresponding to 711~fb−1^{-1}. No significant signal is observed. We set 90\% confidence level upper limits ranging between 10−410^{-4} and 10−610^{-6} on the branching fraction B(B→hXinv)\mathcal{B}(B \to h X_{\rm{inv}}) as a function of mXinvm_{ X_{\rm{inv}}}. Corresponding limits are set on B(B→hX)×B(X→γγ)\mathcal{B}(B \to hX)\times\mathcal{B}(X\toγγ) for lifetimes cτXcτ_X between 10 μ10~μm and 10 m. Many of these limits are the first direct constraints on their respective decays. Our results provide the most stringent exclusion limits to date on the branching fractions for all search channels, and exclude previously unexplored regions of parameter space relevant to several new physics models.

Search for an Axion-Like Particle in B→K(∗)a(→γγ)B\rightarrow K^{(*)} a (\rightarrowγγ) Decays at Belle

We report a search for an axion-like particle aa in B→K(∗)a(→γγ)B\rightarrow K^{(*)} a (\rightarrowγγ) decays using data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy electron-positron collider. The search is based on a 711fb−1711 \mathrm{fb^{-1}} data sample collected at the Υ4SΥ4S resonance energy, corresponding to a sample of 772×106772\times10^6 Υ4SΥ4S events. In this study, we search for the decay of the axion-like particle into a pair of photons, a→γγa \rightarrow γγ. We scan the two-photon invariant mass in the range 0.16 GeV/c2−4.50 GeV/c20.16\ \mathrm{GeV/}c^2-4.50\ \mathrm{GeV}/c^2 for the KK modes and 0.16 GeV/c2−4.20 GeV/c20.16\ \mathrm{GeV/}c^2-4.20\ \mathrm{GeV}/c^2 for the K∗K^{*} modes. No significant signal is observed in any of the modes, and 90\% confidence level upper limits are established on the coupling to the WW boson, gaWg_aW, as a function of aa mass. The limits range from 3×10−6GeV−13 \times 10^{-6} \mathrm{GeV}^{-1} to 3×10−5GeV−13 \times 10^{-5} \mathrm{GeV}^{-1}, improving the current constraints on gaWg_aW by a factor of two over the most stringent previous experimental results.

Measurement of branching fractions and direct CPCP asymmetries for B→KπB \to Kπ and B→ππB\toππ decays at Belle II

We report measurements of the branching fractions and direct CP\it{CP} asymmetries of the decays B0→K+π−B^0 \to K^+ π^-, B+→K+π0B^+ \to K^+ π^0, B+→K0π+B^+ \to K^0 π^+, and B0→K0π0B^0 \to K^0 π^0, and use these for testing the standard model through an isospin-based sum rule. In addition, we measure the branching fraction and direct CP\it{CP} asymmetry of the decay B+→π+π0B^+ \to π^+π^0 and the branching fraction of the decay B0→π+π−B^0 \to π^+π^-. The data are collected with the Belle II detector from e+e−e^+e^- collisions at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance produced by the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy collider and contain 387×106387\times 10^6 bottom-antibottom meson pairs. Signal yields are determined in two-dimensional fits to background-discriminating variables, and range from 500 to 3900 decays, depending on the channel. We obtain −0.03±0.13±0.04-0.03 \pm 0.13 \pm 0.04 for the sum rule, in agreement with the standard model expectation of zero and with a precision comparable to the best existing determinations.

Measurement of the B0→D∗−ℓ+νℓB^{0} \rightarrow D^{*-} \ell^{+} ν_{\ell} branching ratio and ∣Vcb∣|V_{cb}| with a fully reconstructed accompanying BB meson in 2019-2021 Belle II data

We present a measurement of the B0→D∗−ℓ+νℓB^{0} \rightarrow D^{*-} \ell^{+} ν_{\ell} (ℓ=e,μ\ell=e,μ) branching ratio and of the CKM parameter ∣Vcb∣|V_{cb}| using signal decays accompanied by a fully reconstructed BB meson. The Belle II data set of electron-positron collisions at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance, corresponding to 189.3 \,fb−1^{-1} of integrated luminosity, is analyzed. With the Caprini-Lellouch-Neubert form factor parameterization, the parameters ηEWF(1)∣Vcb∣η_{\rm EW} F(1) |V_{cb}| and ρ2ρ^{2} are extracted, where ηEWη_{\rm EW} is an electroweak correction, F(1)F(1) is a normalization factor and ρ2ρ^{2} is a form factor shape parameter. We reconstruct 516 signal decays and thereby obtain B(B0→D∗−ℓ+νℓ)=(5.27±0.22 (stat)±0.38 (syst))%\mathcal{B} (B^{0} \rightarrow D^{*-} \ell^{+} ν_{\ell} ) = \left(5.27 \pm 0.22~\rm{\left(stat\right)} \pm 0.38~\rm{\left(syst\right)}\right) \%, ηEWF(1)∣Vcb∣×103=34.6±1.8 (stat)±1.7 (syst)η_{EW} F(1) |V_{cb}| \times 10^{3} = 34.6 \pm 1.8~\rm{\left(stat\right)} \pm 1.7~\rm{\left(syst\right)}, and ρ2=0.94±0.18 (stat)±0.11 (syst)ρ^{2} = 0.94 \pm 0.18~\rm{\left(stat\right)} \pm 0.11~\rm{\left(syst\right)}.

Search for rare decays B+→Ds(∗)+ηB^{+} \to D_{s}^{(\ast)+}η, Ds(∗)+Kˉ0D_{s}^{(\ast)+}\bar{K}^{0}, D+ηD^{+}η, and D+K0D^{+}K^{0}

We present a study of rare decay modes B+→Ds+h0B^{+} \to D_{s}^{+}h^{0}, B+→Ds∗+h0B^{+} \to D_{s}^{\ast+}h^{0}, and B+→D+h0B^{+} \to D^{+}h^{0}, where h0h^{0} denotes the neutral mesons ηη or K0K^{0}, using a data sample of (772±10)×106(772 \pm 10 ) \times 10^{6} BBˉB\bar{B} events produced at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance. The data were collected by the Belle detector operating at the asymmetric-energy KEKB collider. We observe no evidence for these decays, so we provide upper limits at the 90%\% confidence level on the branching fractions of B+→Ds+h0B^{+} \to D_{s}^{+}h^{0}, Ds∗+h0D_{s}^{\ast+}h^{0}, and D+h0D^{+}h^{0} decay modes. Along with rare decay modes, we report improved measurements of the color-suppressed decay branching fractions B(Bˉ0→D0η)\mathcal{B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to D^{0}η) = (26.6 ±\pm 1.2 ±\pm 2.1) ×\times 10−510^{-5} and B(Bˉ0→D0Kˉ0)\mathcal{B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to D^{0}\bar{K}^{0}) = (5.6 ±\pm 0.5 ±\pm 0.2) ×\times 10−510^{-5}. Evidence of a new excited charmed baryon decaying to Σc(2455)0,++π±Σ_{c}(2455)^{0,++} π^{\pm}

We present the study of Bˉ0→Σc(2455)0,++π±pˉ\bar{B}^{0} \to Σ_{c}(2455)^{0,++} π^{\pm} \bar{p} decays based on 772×106772\times 10^{6} BBˉB\bar{B} events collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+e^- collider. The Σc(2455)0,++Σ_{c}(2455)^{0,++} candidates are reconstructed via their decay to Λc+π∓Λ_{c}^{+} π^{\mp} and Λc+Λ_{c}^{+} decays to pK−π+, pKS0,pK^{-}π^{+},~pK_{S}^{0}, and Λπ+Λπ^{+} final states. The corresponding branching fractions are measured to be B(Bˉ0→Σc(2455)0π+pˉ)=(1.09±0.06±0.07)×10−4{\cal B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to Σ_{c}(2455)^{0} π^{+} \bar{p}) = (1.09 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.07)\times10^{-4} and B(Bˉ0→Σc(2455)++π−pˉ)=(1.84±0.11±0.12)×10−4{\cal B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to Σ_{c}(2455)^{++} π^{-} \bar{p}) = (1.84\pm 0.11 \pm 0.12)\times 10^{-4}, which are consistent with the world average values with improved precision. A new structure is found in the MΣc(2455)0,++π±M_{Σ_{c}(2455)^{0,++}π^{\pm}} spectrum with a significance of 4.2σ4.2σ including systematic uncertainty. The structure is possibly an excited Λc+Λ_{c}^{+} and is tentatively named Λc(2910)+Λ_{c}(2910)^{+}. Its mass and width are measured to be (2913.8±5.6±3.8)(2913.8 \pm 5.6 \pm 3.8) MeV/c2c^{2} and (51.8±20.0±18.8)(51.8\pm20.0 \pm 18.8) MeV, respectively. The products of branching fractions for the Λc(2910)+Λ_{c}(2910)^{+} are measured to be B(Bˉ0→Λc(2910)+pˉ)×B(Λc(2910)+→Σc(2455)0π+)=(9.5±3.6±1.6)×10−6{\cal B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to Λ_{c}(2910)^{+}\bar{p})\times{\cal B}(Λ_{c}(2910)^{+} \to Σ_{c}(2455)^{0}π^{+}) = (9.5 \pm 3.6 \pm 1.6)\times 10^{-6} and B(Bˉ0→Λc(2910)+pˉ)×B(Λc(2910)+→Σc(2455)++π−)=(1.24±0.35±0.10)×10−5{\cal B}(\bar{B}^{0} \to Λ_{c} (2910)^{+}\bar{p})\times {\cal B}(Λ_{c}(2910)^{+} \to Σ_{c}(2455)^{++}π^{-}) = (1.24 \pm 0.35 \pm 0.10)\times 10^{-5}. Here, the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively.

We report measurements of the branching fraction (B\mathcal{B}) and direct CPCP-violating asymmetry (ACPA_{CP}) of the charmless decay B0→K0π0B^{0} \to K^0 π^0 at Belle II. A sample of e+e−e^{+} e^{-} collisions, corresponding to 189.8fb−1189.8 fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity, recorded at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance is used for the first decay-time-dependent analysis of these decays within the experiment. First Measurement of the Λc+→pη′Λ_c^+ \to p η' decay

We present the first measurement of the branching fraction of the singly Cabibbo-suppressed (SCS) decay Λc+→pη′Λ_c^+ \to p η' with η′→ηπ+π−η' \to ηπ^+π^-, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 981 fb−1\rm fb^{-1}, collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e^{+}e−e^{-} asymmetric-energy collider. A significant Λc+Λ_c^+ signal is observed for the first time with a signal significance of 5.4σσ. The relative branching fraction with respect to the normalization mode Λc+→pK−π+Λ_c^+ \to pK^-π^+ is measured to be \begin{equation*} \frac{{\cal B}(Λ_c^+ \to p η')}{{\cal B}(Λ_c^+ \to p K^-π^+)} = (7.54 \pm 1.32 \pm 0.75) \times 10^{-3}, \end{equation*} where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. Using the world-average value of B(Λc+→pK−π+)=(6.28±0.32)×10−2{\cal B}(Λ_c^+ \to p K^-π^+) = (6.28\pm0.32)\times10^{-2}, we obtain \begin{equation*} {\cal B}(Λ_c^+ \to p η') = (4.73 \pm 0.82 \pm 0.47 \pm 0.24)\times 10^{-4}, \end{equation*} where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and from B(Λc+→pK−π+){\cal B}(Λ_c^+ \to pK^-π^+), respectively.

Search for a light Higgs boson in single-photon decays of Υ(1S)Υ(1S) using Υ(2S)→π+π−Υ(1S)Υ(2S) \to π^+ π^- Υ(1S) tagging method

We search for a light Higgs boson (A0A^0) decaying into a τ+τ−τ^+τ^- or μ+μ−μ^+μ^- pair in the radiative decays of Υ(1S)Υ(1S). The production of Υ(1S)Υ(1S) mesons is tagged by Υ(2S)→π+π−Υ(1S)Υ(2S)\to π^+ π^- Υ(1S) transitions, using 158 million Υ(2S)Υ(2S) events accumulated with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy electron-positron collider. No significant A0A^0 signals in the mass range from the τ+τ−τ^+τ^- or μ+μ−μ^+μ^- threshold to 9.2 GeV/c2c^2 are observed. We set the upper limits at 90\% credibility level (C.L.) on the product branching fractions for Υ(1S)→γA0Υ(1S)\to γA^0 and A0→τ+τ−A^0\to τ^+τ^- varying from 3.8×10−63.8\times10^{-6} to 1.5×10−41.5\times10^{-4}. Our results represent an approximately twofold improvement on the current world best upper limits for the Υ(1S)→γA0(→τ+τ−)Υ(1S)\to γA^0(\to τ^+τ^-) production. For A0→μ+μ−A^0\to μ^+μ^-, the upper limits on the product branching fractions for Υ(1S)→γA0Υ(1S)\to γA^0 and A0→μ+μ−A^0\to μ^+μ^- are at the same level as the world average limits, and vary from 3.1×10−73.1\times10^{-7} to 1.6×10−51.6\times10^{-5}. The upper limits at 90\% C.L. on the Yukawa coupling fΥ(1S)f_{Υ(1S)} and mixing angle sinθA0{\rm sin}θ_{A^0} are also given.

We find B(B‾0→D+π−)=(2.48±0.01±0.09±0.04)×10−3\mathcal{B}(\overline{B}{}^0\rightarrow D^{+}π^{-}) = (2.48 \pm 0.01 \pm 0.09 \pm 0.04) \times 10^{-3} and B(B‾0→D+K−)=(2.03±0.05±0.07±0.03)×10−4\mathcal{B}(\overline{B}{}^0\rightarrow D^{+}K^{-})= (2.03 \pm 0.05 \pm 0.07 \pm 0.03) \times 10^{-4} decays, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third uncertainty is due to the D+→K−π+π+D^{+} \rightarrow K^{-}π^{+}π^{+} branching fraction. The ratio of branching fractions of B‾0→D+K−\overline{B}{}^0\rightarrow D^{+}K^{-} and B‾0→D+π−\overline{B}{}^0\rightarrow D^{+}π^{-} is measured to be RD=[8.19±0.20(stat)±0.23(syst)]×10−2R^{D} = [8.19 \pm 0.20(\rm stat) \pm 0.23(\rm syst)] \times 10^{-2} . These measurements are performed using the full Belle data set, which corresponds to 772×106BB‾772 \times 10^{6} B\overline{B} pairs.

The study of γγ→γψ(2S)γγ\toγψ(2S) at Belle

Using 980 fb−1980~\rm fb^{-1} of data on and around the Υ(nS)(n=1,2,3,4,5)Υ(nS)(n=1,2,3,4,5) resonances collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+e^- collider, the two-photon process γγ→γψ(2S)γγ\to γψ(2S) is studied from the threshold to 4.2 GeV4.2~{\rm GeV} for the first time. Two structures are seen in the invariant mass distribution of γψ(2S)γψ(2S): one at MR1=3922.4±6.5±2.0 MeV/c2M_{R_1} = 3922.4\pm 6.5 \pm 2.0~{\rm MeV}/c^2 with a width of ΓR1=22±17±4 MeVΓ_{R_1} = 22\pm 17\pm 4~{\rm MeV}, and another at MR2=4014.3±4.0±1.5 MeV/c2M_{R_2} = 4014.3\pm 4.0 \pm 1.5~{\rm MeV}/c^2 with a width of ΓR2=4±11±6 MeVΓ_{R_2} = 4\pm 11 \pm 6~{\rm MeV}; the signals are parametrized with the incoherent sum of two Breit-Wigner functions. The first structure is consistent with the X(3915)X(3915) or the χc2(3930)χ_{c2}(3930), and the local statistical significance is determined to be 3.1σ3.1σ with the systematic uncertainties included. The second matches none of the known charmonium or charmoniumlike states, and its global significance is determined to be 2.8σ2.8σ including the look-elsewhere effect. The reconstruction of tau-pair production, e+e−→τ+τ−e^{+}e^{-} \to τ^{+}τ^{-}, from the subsequent 3-prong (τ+→π+π−π+νˉττ^{+} \rightarrow π^{+} π^{-} π^{+} \barν_τ) and 1-prong (τ−→ℓ−νˉℓνττ^{-} \to \ell^{-} \barν_{\ell} ν_τ, τ−→h−νττ^{-} \to h^{-} ν_τ or τ−→π−π0νττ^{-} \to π^{-} π^0 ν_τ) decays, is presented using 8.8 fb−1^{-1} of e+e−e^{+}e^{-} collision data of Belle II at the center-of-mass energy s=mΥ(4S)\sqrt{s} = m_{Υ(4S)}. The pseudomass technique developed by the ARGUS experiment is used to measure the ττ-lepton mass mτm_τ in the 3-prong τ+→π+π−π+νˉττ^{+} \to π^{+} π^{-} π^{+} \barν_τ decay, resulting in mτ=1777.28±0.75 (stat.)±0.33 (sys.) MeV/c2m_τ = 1777.28 \pm 0.75~{\rm (stat.)} \pm 0.33 ~{\rm (sys.)}~{\rm{MeV}/\rm{c}^2}.

Measurements of the branching fractions of Ξc0→ΛKS0Ξ_c^0 \to ΛK_S^0, Ξc0→Σ0KS0Ξ_c^0 \to Σ^0 K_S^0, and Ξc0→Σ+K−Ξ_c^0 \to Σ^+ K^- decays at Belle

Using the entire data sample of 980 fb−1980\mathrm{~fb}^{-1} collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+e^- collider, we present measurements of the branching fractions of the Cabibbo-favored decays Ξc0→ΛKS0Ξ_c^0 \to ΛK_S^0, Ξc0→Σ0KS0Ξ_c^0 \to Σ^0 K_S^0, and Ξc0→Σ+K−Ξ_c^0 \to Σ^+ K^-. Taking the decay $Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^- \pip$ as the normalization mode, we measure the branching fraction ratio B(Ξc0→ΛKS0)/B(Ξc0→Ξ−π+)=0.229±0.008±0.012{\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to ΛK_S^0)/{\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^- π^+) = 0.229\pm0.008\pm0.012 with improved precision, and measure the branching fraction ratios B(Ξc0→Σ0KS0)/B(Ξc0→Ξ−π+)=0.038±0.006±0.004{\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to Σ^0 K_S^0)/{\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^- π^+) = 0.038\pm0.006\pm0.004 and B(Ξc0→Σ+K−)/B(Ξc0→Ξ−π+)=0.123±0.007±0.010{\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to Σ^+ K^-)/{\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^- π^+) = 0.123\pm0.007\pm0.010 for the first time. Taking into account the branching fraction of the normalization mode, the absolute branching fractions are determined to be B(Ξc0→ΛKS0)=(3.27±0.11±0.17±0.73)×10−3{\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to ΛK_S^0) = (3.27\pm0.11\pm0.17\pm0.73) \times 10^{-3}, B(Ξc0→Σ0KS0)=(0.54±0.09±0.06±0.12)×10−3{\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to Σ^0 K_S^0) = (0.54\pm 0.09\pm 0.06\pm 0.12) \times 10^{-3}, and B(Ξc0→Σ+K−)=(1.76±0.10±0.14±0.39)×10−3{\cal B}(Ξ_c^0 \to Σ^+ K^-) = (1.76\pm 0.10\pm0.14\pm 0.39) \times 10^{-3}. The first and second uncertainties above are statistical and systematic, respectively, while the third ones arise from the uncertainty of the branching fraction of Ξc0→Ξ−π+Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^- π^+.

Search for B0B^0 meson decays into ΛΛ and missing energy with a hadronic tagging method at Belle

We present a search for the decays of B0B^0 mesons into a final state containing a ΛΛ baryon and missing energy. These results are obtained from a 711fb−1711\text{fb}^{-1} data sample that contains 772×106772 \times 10^6 BB‾B{\kern 0.18em}\overline{\kern -0.18em B} pairs and was collected near the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+e^- collider. We use events in which one BB meson is fully reconstructed in a hadronic decay mode and require the remainder of the event to consist of only a single ΛΛ. No evidence for these decays is found and we set 90%90\% confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions in the range 2.12.1-3.8×10−53.8\times 10^{-5}. This measurement provides the world's most restrictive limits, with implications for baryogenesis and dark matter production.

SPring-8 LEPS2 beamline: A facility to produce a multi-GeV photon beam via laser Compton scattering

We have constructed a new laser-Compton-scattering facility, called the LEPS2 beamline, at the 8-GeV electron storage ring, SPring-8. This facility provides a linearly polarized photon beam in a tagged energy range of 1.3--2.4 GeV. Thanks to a small divergence of the low-emittance storage-ring electrons, the tagged photon beam has a size (sigma) suppressed to about 4 mm even after it travels about 130 m to the experimental building that is independent of the storage ring building and contains large detector systems. This beamline is designed to achieve a photon beam intensity higher than that of the first laser-Compton-scattering beamline at SPring-8 by adopting the simultaneous injection of up to four high-power laser beams and increasing a transmittance for the long photon-beam path up to about 77%. The new beamline is under operation for hadron photoproduction experiments.

A calibration of the Belle II hadronic tag-side reconstruction algorithm with B→XℓνB \rightarrow X\ell ν decays

Tag-side reconstruction is an important method for reconstructing BB meson decays with missing energy. The Belle II tag-side reconstruction algorithm, Full Event Interpretation, relies on a hierarchical reconstruction of BB meson decays with multivariate classification employed at each stage of reconstruction. Given the large numbers of classifiers employed and decay chains reconstructed, the performance of the algorithm on data and simulation differs significantly. Here, calibration factors are derived for hadronic tag-side BB decays by measuring a signal side decay, B→XℓνB \rightarrow X\ell ν, in 34.634.6 fb−1^{-1} of Belle II data. For a very loose selection on the tag-side BB multivariate classifier, the calibration factors are 0.65±0.020.65 \pm 0.02 and 0.83±0.030.83 \pm 0.03 for tag-side B+B^{+} and B0B^{0} mesons, respectively.

Charmless BB decay reconstruction in 2019 Belle II data

We report on the reconstruction of various charmless BB decays from electron-positron collisions at the energy corresponding to the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider. We use simulation to devise optimized event selections and apply them to the full data set collected in 2019, corresponding to 8.7\,fb−1^{-1} of integrated luminosity. We fit the difference between half of the collision energy and the BB candidate energy (in the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) frame) for events restricted to a signal-rich range in beam-energy-constrained mass to search for charmless signals. Signal yields of approximately 80, 15, 20, 30, 90, and 160 decays are reconstructed for the channels B0→K+π−B^0 \to K^+π^-, B0→π+π−B^0 \to π^+π^-, B+→KS0(→π+π−)π+B^+ \to K^0_S(\to π^+π^-)π^+, B+→K+π0(→γγ)B^+ \to K^+π^0(\to γγ), B+→K+K−K+B^+ \to K^+K^-K^+, and B+→K+π−π+B^+ \to K^+π^-π^+, respectively. Yields and background contaminations are compatible with those expected from simulation and comparable with those obtained by the Belle experiment. The results show a good understanding of the detector performance and offer a reliable basis to assess projections for future reach.

Dalitz analysis of D0→K−π+ηD^{0}\to K^{-}π^{+}η decays at Belle

We present the results of the first Dalitz plot analysis of the decay D0→K−π+ηD^{0}\to K^{-}π^{+}η. The analysis is performed on a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 953 fb−1\rm{fb}^{-1} collected by the Belle detector at the asymmetric-energy e+e−e^{+}e^{-} KEKB collider. The Dalitz plot is well described by a combination of the six resonant decay channels Kˉ∗(892)0η\bar{K}^{*}(892)^0η, K−a0(980)+K^{-}a_0(980)^+, K−a2(1320)+K^{-}a_2(1320)^+, Kˉ∗(1410)0η\bar{K}^{*}(1410)^0η, K∗(1680)−π+K^{*}(1680)^-π^{+} and K2∗(1980)−π+K_2^{*}(1980)^-π^{+}, together with KπKπ and KηKη S-wave components. The decays K∗(1680)−→K−ηK^{*}(1680)^{-}\to K^{-}η and K2∗(1980)−→K−ηK_{2}^{*}(1980)^{-}\to K^{-}η are observed for the first time. We measure ratio of the branching fractions, B(D0→K−π+η)B(D0→K−π+)=0.500±0.002(stat)±0.020(syst)±0.003(BPDG)\frac{\mathcal{B}(D^{0}\to K^{-}π^{+}η)}{\mathcal{B}(D^{0}\to K^{-}π^{+})}=0.500\pm0.002{\rm(stat)}\pm0.020{\rm(syst)}\pm0.003{\rm (\mathcal{B}_{PDG})}. Using the Dalitz fit result, the ratio B(K∗(1680)→Kη)B(K∗(1680)→Kπ)\frac{\mathcal{B}(K^{*}(1680)\to Kη)}{\mathcal{B}(K^{*}(1680)\to Kπ)} is measured to be 0.11±0.02(stat)−0.04+0.06(syst)±0.04(BPDG)0.11\pm0.02{\rm(stat)}^{+0.06}_{-0.04}{\rm(syst)}\pm0.04{\rm(\mathcal{B}_{\text{PDG}})}; this is much lower than the theoretical expectations (≈1\approx1) made under the assumption that K∗(1680)K^{*}(1680) is a pure 13D11^{3}D_1 state. The product branching fraction B(D0→[K2∗(1980)−→K−η]π+)=(2.2−1.9+1.7)×10−4\mathcal{B}(D^0\to [K_2^{*}(1980)^-\to K^{-}η]π^{+})=(2.2^{+1.7}_{-1.9})\times10^{-4} is determined. In addition, the πη′πη^{\prime} contribution to the a0(980)±a_0(980)^{\pm} resonance shape is confirmed with 10.1σσ statistical significance using the three-channel Flatté model. We also measure B(D0→Kˉ∗(892)0η)=(1.41−0.12+0.13)%\mathcal{B}(D^0\to\bar{K}^{*}(892)^0η)=(1.41^{+0.13}_{-0.12})\%. This is consistent with, and more precise than, the current world average (1.02±0.30)%(1.02\pm0.30)\%, deviates with a significance of more than 3σ3σ from the theoretical predictions of (0.51-0.92)%.

Evidence for a vector charmonium-like state in e+e−→Ds+Ds2∗(2573)−+c.c.e^+e^- \to D^+_sD^*_{s2}(2573)^-+c.c.

We report the measurement of e+e−→Ds+Ds2∗(2573)−+c.c.e^+e^- \to D^+_sD^*_{s2}(2573)^-+c.c. via initial-state radiation using a data sample of an integrated luminosity of 921.9 fb−1^{-1} collected with the Belle detector at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) and nearby. We find evidence for an enhancement with a 3.4σσ significance in the invariant mass of Ds+Ds2∗(2573)−+c.c.D^+_sD^*_{s2}(2573)^- +c.c. The measured mass and width are (4619.8−8.0+8.9(stat.)±2.3(syst.)) MeV/c2(4619.8^{+8.9}_{-8.0}({\rm stat.})\pm2.3({\rm syst.}))~{\rm MeV}/c^{2} and (47.0−14.8+31.3(stat.)±4.6(syst.)) MeV(47.0^{+31.3}_{-14.8}({\rm stat.})\pm4.6({\rm syst.}))~{\rm MeV}, respectively. The mass, width, and quantum numbers of this enhancement are consistent with the charmonium-like state at 4626 MeV/c2c^2 recently reported by Belle in e+e−→Ds+Ds1(2536)−+c.c.e^+e^-\to D^+_sD_{s1}(2536)^-+c.c. First flavor tagging calibration using 2019 Belle II data

Measurement of Hadronic Mass Moments ⟨MXn⟩\langle M_X^n \rangle in B→XcℓνB \rightarrow X_c \ell ν Decays at Belle II

We present measurements of the first six hadronic mass moments in semileptonic B→XcℓνB \rightarrow X_c \ell ν decays. The hadronic mass moments, together with other observables of inclusive BB decays, can be used to determine the CKM matrix element ∣Vcb∣|{V_{cb}}| and mass of the bb-quark mbm_b in the context of Heavy Quark Expansions of QCD. The Belle~II data recorded at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance in 2019 and 2020 (March-July), corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 34.6  fb−134.6\;\mathrm{fb}^{-1}, is used for this measurement. The decay Υ(4S)→BB‾Υ(4S) \rightarrow B \overline{B} is reconstructed by applying the hadronic tagging algorithm provided by the Full Event Interpretation to fully reconstruct one BB meson. The second BB meson is reconstructed inclusively by selecting a high-momentum lepton. The XcX_c system is identified by the remaining reconstructed tracks and clusters in the electromagnetic calorimeter. We report preliminary results for the hadronic mass moments ⟨MXn⟩\langle M_X^n \rangle with n=1,…,6n=1,\dots,6, measured as a function of a lower cut on the lepton momentum in the signal BB rest frame.

Measurement of the B0B^0 lifetime using fully reconstructed hadronic decays in the 2019 Belle II dataset

This document presents the measurement of B0B^0 meson lifetimes using the 2019 Belle II dataset that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 8.7±0.28.7 \pm 0.2 fb−1^{-1}. Each candidate is fully reconstructed with hadronic decay final states on the signal side, while the rest-of-event technique allows to infer the decay vertex position on the other (tag) side. B0B^0 lifetime is extracted from an unbinned maximum likelihood fit to the distribution of the difference between the signal side B0B^0 candidate and the tag side decay times. The measured lifetime is τB0=1.48±0.28±0.06τ_{B^0} = 1.48 \pm 0.28 \pm 0.06 ps, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

Measurement of two-particle correlations in hadronic e+e−e^{+}e^{-} collisions at Belle

The enhancement of charged-particle pairs with large pseudorapidity difference and small azimuthal angle difference, often referred to as the ``ridge signal'', is a phenomenon widely observed in high multiplicity proton-proton, proton-ion and deutron-ion collisions, which is not yet fully understood. In heavy-ion collisions, the hydrodynamic expansion of the Quark-Gluon Plasma is one of the possible explanations of the origin of the ridge signal. Measurements in the e+e−e^+e^- collision system, without the complexities introduced by hadron structure in the initial state, can serve as a complementary probe to examine the formation of a ridge signal. The first measurement of two-particle angular correlation functions in high multiplicity e+e−e^+e^- collisions at s=10.52\sqrt{s}=10.52 GeV is reported. The hadronic e+e−e^+e^- annihilation data collected by the Belle detector at KEKB are used in this study. Two-particle angular correlation functions are measured over the full azimuth and large pseudorapidity intervals which are defined by either the electron beam axis or the event thrust as a function of charged particle multiplicity. The measurement in the event thrust analysis, with mostly outgoing quark pairs determining the reference axis, is sensitive to the region of additional soft gluon emissions. No significant ridge signal is observed with either coordinates analyses. Near side jet correlations appear to be absent in the thrust axis analysis. The measurements are compared to predictions from various event generators and expected to provide new constraints to the phenomenological models in the low energy regime.

Measurements of branching fractions and CP-violating charge asymmetries in charmless BB decays reconstructed in 2019--2020 Belle~II data

We report on first measurements of branching fractions~(B\mathcal{B}) and CP-violating charge asymmetries~(A\mathcal{A}) in charmless BB decays at Belle~II. We use a sample of electron-positron collisions collected in 2019 and 2020 at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance and corresponding to 34.634.6\,fb−1^{-1} of integrated luminosity. We use simulation to determine optimized event selections. The ΔEΔE distributions of the resulting samples, restricted in MbcM_{\rm bc}, are fit to determine signal yields. Signal yields are corrected for efficiencies determined from simulation and control data samples to obtain branching fractions and CP-violating asymmetries for flavour-specific channels. These are the first measurements in charmless decays reported by Belle~II. Results are compatible with known determinations and show detector performance comparable with the best Belle results offering a reliable basis to assess projections for future reach.

We report searches for B0→invisibleB^0\to\rm{invisible} and B0→invisible+γB^0\to\rm{invisible}+γ decays, where the energy of the photon is required to be larger than 0.5 GeV. These results are obtained from a 711 fb−1711\,{\rm fb}^{-1} data sample that contains 772×106BBˉ772 \times 10^6 B\bar{B} pairs and was collected near the Υ (4S)Υ\,(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e−e^+ e^- collider. We observe no significant signal for either decay and set upper limits on their branching fractions at 90%90\% confidence level of B (B0→invisible)<7.8×10−5\mathcal{B}\,(B^0\to\rm{invisible}) < 7.8\times10^{-5} and B (B0→invisible+γ)<1.6×10−5\mathcal{B}\,(B^0\to\rm{invisible}+γ) < 1.6\times10^{-5}.

Search for η′η' bound nuclei in the 12C(γ,p)^{12}{\rm C}(γ,p) reaction with simultaneous detection of decay products

We measured missing mass spectrum of the 12C(γ,p)^{12}{\rm C}(γ,p) reaction for the first time in coincidence with potential decay products from η′η' bound nuclei. We tagged an (η+pη+p) pair associated with the η′N→ηNη'N\toηN process in a nucleus. After applying kinematical selections to reduce backgrounds, no signal events were observed in the bound-state region. An upper limit of the signal cross section in the opening angle cos⁡θlabηp<−0.9\cosθ^{ηp}_{lab}<-0.9 was obtained to be 2.2 nb/sr at the 90%\% confidence level. It is compared with theoretical cross sections, whose normalization ambiguity is suppressed by measuring a quasifree η′η' production rate. Our results indicate a small branching fraction of the η′N→ηNη'N\toηN process and/or a shallow η′η'-nucleus potential.

Search for an invisibly decaying Z′Z^{\prime} boson at Belle II in e+e−→μ+μ−(e±μ∓)e^+ e^- \to μ^+ μ^- (e^{\pm} μ^{\mp}) plus missing energy final states

Theories beyond the standard model often predict the existence of an additional neutral boson, the Z′Z^{\prime}. Using data collected by the Belle II experiment during 2018 at the SuperKEKB collider, we perform the first searches for the invisible decay of a Z′Z^{\prime} in the process e+e−→μ+μ−Z′e^+ e^- \to μ^+ μ^- Z^{\prime} and of a lepton-flavor-violating Z′Z^{\prime} in e+e−→e±μ∓Z′e^+ e^- \to e^{\pm} μ^{\mp} Z^{\prime}. We do not find any excess of events and set 90\% credibility level upper limits on the cross sections of these processes. We translate the former, in the framework of an Lμ−LτL_μ-L_τ theory, into upper limits on the Z′Z^{\prime} coupling constant at the level of 5×10−25 \times 10^{-2} -- 11 MZ′≤6M_{Z^\prime}\leq 6 GeV/c2c^2.

Search for the Decay Bs0→η′ηB_s^0 \rightarrow η^\prime η

In the Standard Model (SM) charmless hadronic decays Bs0→η′ηB_s^0 \rightarrow η^\prime η proceed via tree-level b→ub\to u and penguin b→sb\to s transitions. Penguin transitions are sensitive to Beyond-the-Standard-Model (BSM) physics scenarios and could affect the branching fractions and {\it CP} asymmetries in such decays. Once branching fractions for two-body decays Bs→ηη,ηη′,η′η′B_s \to ηη, ηη^{\prime}, η^{\prime}η^{\prime} are measured, and the theoretical uncertainties are reduced, it would be possible to extract {\it CP} violating parameters from the data using the formalism based on SU(3)/U(3) symmetry. To achieve this goal, at least four of these six branching fractions need to be measured. Only the branching fraction for Bs0→η′η′B_s^0 \to η^{\prime}η^{\prime} has been measured so far.

Studies of the semileptonic Bˉ0→D∗+ℓ−νˉℓ\bar B^0\to D^{*+}\ell^-\barν_\ell and B−→D0ℓ−νˉℓB^-\to D^{0}\ell^-\barν_\ell decay processes with 34.6 fb−1^{-1} of Belle II data

We report measurements of the Bˉ0→D∗+ℓ−νˉl\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} \ell^{-} \barν_l and B−→D0ℓ−νˉlB^- \to D^{0} \ell^{-} \barν_l processes using 34.6 fb−1^{-1} of collision events recorded by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+ e^- collider. For the B−→D0ℓ−νˉℓB^-\to D^{0}\ell^-\barν_\ell channel, we present first studies that isolate this decay from other semileptonic processes and backgrounds. We report a measurement of the Bˉ0→D∗+ℓ−νˉl\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} \ell^{-} \barν_l branching fraction and obtain B(Bˉ0→D∗+ℓ−νˉl)=(4.60±0.05stat±0.17syst±0.45πs)%{\cal B}(\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} \ell^{-} \barν_l) = \left(4.60 \pm 0.05_{\mathrm{stat}}\pm0.17_{\mathrm{syst}} \pm 0.45_{π_s}\right) \%, in agreement with the world average. Here, the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and related to slow pion reconstruction, respectively. The systematic uncertainties are limited by the statistics of auxiliary measurements and will improve in the future. We also report differential branching fractions in five bins of the hadronic recoil parameter ww for Bˉ0→D∗+ℓ−νˉl\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} \ell^{-} \barν_l, unfolded to account for resolution and efficiency effects.

Update of inclusive cross sections of single and pairs of identified light charged hadrons

We report new measurements of the production cross sections of pairs of charged pions and kaons as a function of their fractional energies using various fractional-energy definitions. Two different fractional-energy definitions were used and compared to the conventional fractional-energy definition reported previously. The new variables aim at either identifying dihadron cross sections in terms of single-hadron fragmentation functions, or to provide a means of characterizing the transverse momentum created in the fragmentation process. The results were obtained applying the updated initial-state radiation correction used in other recent Belle publications on light-hadron production cross sections. In addition, production cross sections of single charged pions, kaons, and protons were also updated using this initial-state radiation correction. The cross sections are obtained from a 558 fb−1558\,{\rm fb}^{-1} data sample collected at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+ e^- collider.

Measurement of the integrated luminosity of the Phase 2 data of the Belle II experiment

From April to July 2018, a data sample at the peak energy of the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance was collected with the Belle~II detector at the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider. This is the first data sample of the Belle~II experiment. Using Bhabha and digamma events, we measure the integrated luminosity of the data sample to be (496.3±0.3±3.0496.3 \pm 0.3 \pm 3.0)~pb−1^{-1}, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. This work provides a basis for future luminosity measurements at Belle~II.

Using the data sample of 711 fb−1^{-1} of Υ(4S)Υ(4S) on-resonance data taken by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy electron-positron collider, we present the first measurements of branching fractions of the decays B−→Λˉc−Ξc′0B^{-} \to \barΛ_{c}^{-} Ξ_{c}^{'0}, B−→Λˉc−Ξc(2645)0B^{-} \to \barΛ_{c}^{-} Ξ_{c}(2645)^{0}, and B−→Λˉc−Ξc(2790)0B^{-} \to \barΛ_{c}^{-} Ξ_{c}(2790)^{0} . The signal yields for these decays are extracted from the recoil mass spectrum of the system recoiling against Λˉc−\barΛ_{c}^{-} baryons in selected B−B^- candidates. The branching fraction of B−→Λˉc−Ξc(2790)0B^{-} \to \barΛ_{c}^{-} Ξ_{c}(2790)^{0} is measured to be (1.1±0.4±0.2)×10−3 (1.1 \pm 0.4 \pm 0.2)\times 10^{-3}, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The 90\% credibility level upper limits on B(B−→Λˉc−Ξc′0){\cal B}(B^{-} \to \barΛ_{c}^{-} Ξ_{c}^{'0}) and B(B−→Λˉc−Ξc(2645)0){\cal B}(B^{-} \to \barΛ_{c}^{-} Ξ_{c}(2645)^{0}) are determined to be 6.5×10−46.5\times 10^{-4} and 7.9×10−47.9\times 10^{-4}, respectively.

Observation of a new structure near 10.75 GeV in the energy dependence of the e+e−→Υ(nS)π+π−e^+e^-\toΥ(nS)π^+π^- (n=1,2,3n=1,2,3) cross sections

We report a new measurement of the e+e−→Υ(nS)π+π−e^+e^-\toΥ(nS)π^+π^- (n=1,2,3n=1,2,3) cross sections at energies from 10.52 to 11.02 GeV using data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+e^- collider. We observe a new structure in the energy dependence of the cross sections; if described by a Breit-Wigner function its mass and width are found to be M=(10752.7±5.9 −1.1+0.7) M=(10752.7\pm5.9\,^{+0.7}_{-1.1})\,MeV/c2c^2 and Γ=(35.5−11.3+17.6 −3.3+3.9) Γ=(35.5^{+17.6}_{-11.3}\,^{+3.9}_{-3.3})\,MeV, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. The global significance of the new structure including systematic uncertainty is 5.2 standard deviations. We also find evidence for the e+e−→Υ(1S)π+π−e^+e^-\toΥ(1S)π^+π^- process at the energy 10.52 GeV, which is below the BBˉB\bar{B} threshold.

Search for B+→μ+ νμB^+ \to μ^+\, ν_μ and B+→μ+ NB^+ \to μ^+\, N with inclusive tagging

We report the result for a search for the leptonic decay of B+→μ+ νμB^+ \to μ^+ \, ν_μ using the full Belle data set of 711 fb−1{}^{-1} of integrated luminosity at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance. In the Standard Model leptonic BB-meson decays are helicity and CKM suppressed. To maximize sensitivity an inclusive tagging approach is used to reconstruct the second BB meson produced in the collision. The directional information from this second BB meson is used to boost the observed μμ into the signal BB meson rest-frame, in which the μμ has a monochromatic momentum spectrum. Though its momentum is smeared by the experimental resolution, this technique improves the analysis sensitivity considerably. Analyzing the μμ momentum spectrum in this frame we find B(B+→μ+ νμ)=(5.3±2.0±0.9)×10−7\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to μ^+ \, ν_μ) = \left( 5.3 \pm 2.0 \pm 0.9 \right) \times 10^{-7} with a one-sided significance of 2.8 standard deviations over the background-only hypothesis. This translates to a frequentist upper limit of B(B+→μ+ νμ)<8.6×10−7\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to μ^+ \, ν_μ) < 8.6 \times 10^{-7} at 90% CL. The experimental spectrum is then used to search for a massive sterile neutrino, B+→μ+ NB^+ \to μ^+ \, N, but no evidence is observed for a sterile neutrino with a mass in a range of 0 - 1.5 GeV. The determined B+→μ+ νμB^+ \to μ^+ \, ν_μ branching fraction limit is further used to constrain the mass and coupling space of the type II and type III two-Higgs-doublet models.

For the first time, χc2χ_{c2} production in exclusive BB decays in the modes B0→χc2π−K+B^0 \to χ_{c2}π^- K^+ and B+→χc2π+π−K+B^+ \to χ_{c2} π^+ π^- K^+ has been observed, along with first evidence for the B+→χc2π+KS0B^+ \to χ_{c2} π^+ K_S^0 decay mode. Interference effect between ϕϕ and Λ(1520)Λ(1520) production channels in the γp→K+K−pγp \rightarrow K^+K^-p reaction near threshold

The ϕϕ-Λ(1520)Λ(1520) interference effect in the γp→K+K−pγp\to K^+K^-p reaction has been measured for the first time in the energy range from 1.673 to 2.173 GeV. The relative phases between ϕϕ and Λ(1520)Λ(1520) production amplitudes were obtained in the kinematic region where the two resonances overlap. The measurement results support strong constructive interference when K+K−K^+K^- pairs are observed at forward angles, but destructive interference for proton emission at forward angles. Furthermore, the observed interference effect does not account for the s=2.1\sqrt{s}=2.1 GeV bump structure in forward differential cross sections for ϕϕ photoproduction. This fact suggests possible exotic structures such as a hidden-strangeness pentaquark state, a new Pomeron exchange and rescattering processes via other hyperon states.

Observation of Transverse Λ/ΛˉΛ/\barΛ Hyperon Polarization in e+e−e^+e^- Annihilation at Belle

We report the first observation of the polarization of Λ/ΛˉΛ/\barΛ hyperons transverse to its production plane in e+e−e^+e^- annihilation. We observe a significant polarization that rises with the fractional energy carried by the hyperon as well as its transverse momentum. To define the production plane, we use the direction of the hyperon momentum together with either the thrust axis in the event or the momentum vector of a hadron in the opposite hemisphere. Furthermore, we investigate the contributions to the hyperon polarization from the feed-down from Σ0/Σˉ0Σ^0/\barΣ^0 and Λc±Λ_c^{\pm} decays. This measurement uses a dataset of 800.4fb−1^{-1} collected by the Belle experiment at or near a center-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV.

We report a measurement of the differential cross section of π0π^0 pair production in single-tag two-photon collisions, γ∗γ→π0π0γ^* γ\to π^0 π^0, in e+e−e^+ e^- scattering. The cross section is measured for Q2Q^2 up to 30 GeV2^2, where Q2Q^2 is the negative of the invariant mass squared of the tagged photon, in the kinematic range 0.5 GeV < W < 2.1 GeV and ∣cos⁡θ∗∣|\cos θ^*| < 1.0 for the total energy and pion scattering angle, respectively, in the γ∗γγ^* γ center-of-mass system. The results are based on a data sample of 759 fb−1^{-1} collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+ e^- collider. The transition form factor of the f0(980)f_0(980) and that of the f2(1270)f_2(1270) with the helicity-0, -1, and -2 components separately are measured for the first time and are compared with theoretical calculations.

Study of χ_{bJ}(1P) Properties in the Radiative Υ(2S) Decays

We report a study of radiative decays of χ_{bJ}(1P)(J=0,1,2) mesons into 74 hadronic final states comprising charged and neutral pions, kaons, protons; out of these, 41 modes are observed with at least 5 standard deviation significance. Our measurements not only improve the previous measurements by the CLEO Collaboration but also lead to first observations in many new modes. The large sample allows us to probe the total decay width of the χ_{b0}(1P). In the absence of a statistically significant result, a 90% confidence-level upper limit is set on the width at Γ_{total}< 2.4 MeV. Our results are based on 24.7 fb^{-1} of e+e- collision data recorded by the Belle detector at the Υ(2S) resonance, corresponding to (157.8\pm3.6)\times10^6 Υ(2S) decays.

The measurement is performed combining the final data samples collected at the Y(4S) resonance by the BaBar and Belle experiments at the asymmetric-energy B factories PEP-II at SLAC and KEKB at KEK, respectively. The data samples contain ( 471 +/- 3 ) x 10^6 BB pairs recorded by the BaBar detector and ( 772 +/- 11 ) x 10^6, BB pairs recorded by the Belle detector. We measure the CP asymmetry parameters -eta_f S = +0.66 +/- 0.10 (stat.) +/- 0.06 (syst.) and C = -0.02 +/- 0.07 (stat.) +/- 0.03 (syst.). These results correspond to the first observation of CP violation in B0->D(*)CP h0 decays. Inclusive cross sections for pairs of identified light charged hadrons and for single protons in e+e−e^+e^- at s=\sqrt{s}= 10.58 GeV

We report the first double differential cross sections of two charged pions and kaons (e+e−→hhXe^+e^- \rightarrow hhX) in electron-positron annihilation as a function of the fractional energies of the two hadrons for any charge and hadron combination. The dependence of these di-hadron cross sections on the topology (same, opposite-hemisphere or anywhere) is also studied with the help of the event shape variable thrust and its axis. The ratios of these di-hadron cross sections for different charges and hadron combinations directly shed light on the contributing fragmentation functions. For example, we find that the ratio of same-sign pion pairs over opposite-sign pion pairs drops toward higher fractional energies where disfavored fragmentation is expected to be suppressed. These di-hadron results are obtained from a 655 fb−1655\,{\rm fb}^{-1} data sample collected near the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+ e^- collider. Extending the previously published single-pion and single-kaon cross sections, single-proton (e+e−→pXe^+e^- \rightarrow pX) cross sections are extracted from a 159 fb−1159\,{\rm fb}^{-1} data sub-sample.

Measurement of Azimuthal Modulations in the Cross-Section of Di-Pion Pairs in Di-Jet Production from Electron-Positron Annihilation

We present an extraction of azimuthal correlations between two pairs of charged pions detected in opposite jets from electron-positron annihilation. These correlations may arise from the dependence of the di-pion fragmentation on the polarization of the parent quark in the process e+e−→qqˉe^+e^- \rightarrow q \bar{q}. Due to the correlation of the quark polarizations, the cross-section of di-pion pair production, in which the pion pairs are detected in opposite jets in a dijet event, exhibits a modulation in the azimuthal angles of the planes containing the hadron pairs with respect to the production plane. The measurement of this modulation allows access to combinations of fragmentation functions that are sensitive to the quark's transverse polarization and helicity. Within our uncertainties we do not observe a significant signal from the previously unmeasured helicity dependent fragmentation function G1⊥G_1^\perp. This measurement uses a dataset of 938~fb−1^{-1} collected by the Belle experiment at or near s≈10.58\sqrt{s}\approx10.58 GeV.

Measurement of the amplitude ratio of B0→D0K∗0B^0 \to D^0K^{*0} and B0→D0ˉK∗0B^0 \to \bar{D^0}K^{*0} decays with a model-independent Dalitz plot analysis using D→KS0π+π−D\to K_S^0π^+π^- decays

We report a measurement of the amplitude ratio rSr_S of B0→D0K∗0B^0 \to D^0K^{*0} and B0→D0ˉK∗0B^0 \to \bar{D^0}K^{*0} decays with a model-independent Dalitz plot analysis using D→KS0π+π−D\to K_S^0π^+π^- decays. Using the full data sample of 772×106772\times10^6 BBˉB\bar{B} pairs collected at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at KEKB accelerator the upper limit is rS<0.87r_S < 0.87 at the 68 % confidence level. This result is the first measurement of rSr_S with a model-independent Dalitz analysis, and is consistent with results from other analyses. The value of rSr_S indicates the sensitivity of the decay to ϕ3ϕ_3 because the statistical uncertainty is proportional to 1/rS1/r_S. The rSr_S result is obtained from observables (x±x_\pm, y±y_\pm) \begin{eqnarray} x_- &=& +0.4 ^{+1.0 +0.0}_{-0.6 -0.1} \pm0.0 \\ y_- &=& -0.6 ^{+0.8 +0.1}_{-1.0 -0.0} \pm0.1 \\ x_+ &=& +0.1 ^{+0.7 +0.0}_{-0.4 -0.1} \pm0.1 \\ y_+ &=& +0.3 ^{+0.5 +0.0}_{-0.8 -0.1} \pm0.1 \\ , \end{eqnarray} where x±=rScos⁡(δS±ϕ3)x_\pm = r_S \cos(δ_S \pm ϕ_3), y±=rSsin⁡(δS±ϕ3)y_\pm = r_S \sin(δ_S \pm ϕ_3) and ϕ3(δS)ϕ_3 (δ_S) are the weak (strong) phase difference between B0→D0K∗0B^0 \to D^0K^{*0} and B0→D0ˉK∗0B^0 \to \bar{D^0}K^{*0}. The Physics of the B Factories

This work is on the Physics of the B Factories. Part A of this book contains a brief description of the SLAC and KEK B Factories as well as their detectors, BaBar and Belle, and data taking related issues. Part B discusses tools and methods used by the experiments in order to obtain results. The results themselves can be found in Part C. Please note that version 3 on the archive is the auxiliary version of the Physics of the B Factories book. This uses the notation alpha, beta, gamma for the angles of the Unitarity Triangle. The nominal version uses the notation phi_1, phi_2 and phi_3. Please cite this work as Eur. Phys. J. C74 (2014) 3026.

Measurement of B0→Ds−KS0π+B^0 \to D_s^- K^0_Sπ^+ and B+→Ds−K+K+B^+ \to D_s^- K^+K^+ branching fractions

We report a measurement of the B0B^0 and B+B^+ meson decays to the Ds−KS0π+D_s^-K^0_S π^+ and Ds−K+K+D_s^- K^+K^+ final states, respectively, using 657×106BB‾657 \times 10^{6} B\overline{B} pairs collected at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+e^- collider. Using the Ds−→ϕπ−D_s^-\to ϕπ^-, K∗(892)0K−K^{*}(892)^0 K^- and KS0K−K^0_S K^- decay modes for the DsD_s reconstruction, we measure the following branching fractions: B(B0→Ds−KS0π+)=[0.47±0.06(stat)±0.05(syst)]×10−4{\cal B}(B^0\to D_s^{-}K^0_Sπ^+)=[0.47 \pm 0.06 (\mathrm {stat}) \pm 0.05 (\mathrm {syst})]\times 10^{-4} and B(B+→Ds−K+K+)=[0.93±0.22(stat)±0.10(syst)]×10−5{\cal B}(B^+\to D_s^-K^+K^+)= [0.93 \pm 0.22 (\mathrm {stat})\pm 0.10 (\mathrm {syst})]\times 10^{-5}. We find the ratio of the branching fraction of B+→Ds−K+K+B^+\to D_s^-K^+K^+ to that of the analogous Cabibbo favored B+→Ds−K+π+B^+\to D_s^-K^+π^+ decay to be RB=0.054±0.013(stat)±0.006(syst){\cal R}_{\cal B} = 0.054 \pm 0.013 ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.006 ({\rm syst}), which is consistent with the na\"ıve factorization model. We also observe a deviation from the three-body phase-space model for both studied decays.

Measurement of the branching fraction of B+→τ+ντB^+ \to τ^+ ν_τ decays with the semileptonic tagging method and the full Belle data sample

We report a measurement of the branching fraction of B+→τ+ντB^+ \to τ^+ ν_τ decays using a data sample of 772×106BBˉ772 \times 10^6 B \bar{B} pairs, collected at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+e^- collider. We reconstruct the accompanying BB meson in a semileptonic decay and detect the B+→τ+ντB^+ \to τ^+ ν_τ candidate in the recoiling event. We obtain a branching fraction of B(B+→τ+ντ)=[1.25±0.28(stat.)±0.27(syst.)]×10−4{\cal B}(B^+ \to τ^+ ν_τ) = [1.25 \pm 0.28 ({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.27({\rm syst.})] \times 10^{-4}. We present a measurement of the time-dependent CPCP violation parameters in B0→η′K0B^0\toη'K^0 decays. The measurement is based on the full data sample containing 772×106772\times 10^6 BBˉB\bar{B} pairs collected at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance using the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+e^- collider. The measured values of the mixing-induced and direct CPCP violation parameters are: \begin{align} \sin 2 ϕ^{\rm eff}_1 &= +0.68\pm 0.07 \pm 0.03, \nonumber \\ \mathcal{A}_{η'K^0} &= +0.03\pm 0.05\pm 0.04, \nonumber \end{align} where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The Bs0→ϕγB_{s}^{0}\rightarrowϕγ branching fraction is measured to be (3.6±0.5(stat.)±0.3(syst.)±0.6(fs))×10−5(3.6 \pm 0.5 (\mathrm{stat.}) \pm 0.3 (\mathrm{syst.}) \pm 0.6 (f_{s})) \times 10^{-5}, where fsf_{s} is the fraction of Bs(∗)Bˉs(∗)B_{s}^{(*)}\bar{B}_{s}^{(*)} in bbˉb\bar{b} events. Our result is in good agreement with the theoretical predictions as well as with a recent measurement from LHCb. We observe no statistically significant signal for the decay Bs0→γγB_{s}^{0}\rightarrowγγ and set a 90%90\% confidence-level upper limit on its branching fraction at 3.1×10−6 3.1 \times 10^{-6}. This constitutes a significant improvement over the previous result.

The experiments with the High Resolution Kaon Spectrometer at JLab Hall C and the new spectroscopy of Λ12B{}^{12}_Λ\text{B} hypernuclei

Since the pioneering experiment, E89-009 studying hypernuclear spectroscopy using the (e,e′K+)(e,e^{\prime}K^+) reaction was completed, two additional experiments, E01-011 and E05-115, were performed at Jefferson Lab. These later experiments used a modified experimental design, the "tilt method", to dramatically suppress the large electromagnetic background, and allowed for a substantial increase in luminosity. Additionally, a new kaon spectrometer, HKS (E01-011), a new electron spectrometer, HES, and a new splitting magnet were added to produce precision, high-resolution hypernuclear spectroscopy. These two experiments, E01-011 and E05-115, resulted in two new data sets, producing sub-MeV energy resolution in the spectra of Λ7He{}^{7}_Λ\text{He}, Λ12B{}^{12}_Λ\text{B} and Λ28Al{}^{28}_Λ\text{Al} and Λ7He{}^{7}_Λ\text{He}, Λ10Be{}^{10}_Λ\text{Be}, Λ12B{}^{12}_Λ\text{B} and Λ52V{}^{52}_Λ\text{V}. All three experiments obtained a Λ12B{}^{12}_Λ\text{B}, spectrum, which is the most characteristic pp-shell hypernucleus and is commonly used for calibration. Independent analyses of these different experiments demonstrate excellent consistency and provide the clearest level structure to date of this hypernucleus as produced by the (e,e′K+)(e,e^{\prime}K^+) reaction. This paper presents details of these experiments, and the extraction and analysis of the observed Λ12B{}^{12}_Λ\text{B} spectrum.

A neural-network based hadronic BB-meson tagging method is used in this study. High-statistics study of K^0_S pair production in two-photon collisions

We report a high-statistics measurement of the differential cross section of the process gamma gamma --> K^0_S K^0_S in the range 1.05 GeV <= W <= 4.00 GeV, where W is the center-of-mass energy of the colliding photons, using 972 fb^{-1} of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+ e^- collider operated at and near the Upsilon-resonance region. The differential cross section is fitted by parameterized S-, D_0-, D_2-, G_0- and G_2-wave amplitudes. In the D_2 wave, the f_2(1270), a_2(1320) and f_2'(1525) are dominant and a resonance, the f_2(2200), is also present. The f_0(1710) and possibly the f_0(2500) are seen in the S wave. The mass, total width and product of the two-photon partial decay width and decay branching fraction to the K bar{K} state Gamma_{gamma gamma}B(K bar{K}) are extracted for the f_2'(1525), f_0(1710), f_2(2200) and f_0(2500). The destructive interference between the f_2(1270) and a_2(1320) is confirmed by measuring their relative phase. The parameters of the charmonium states chi_{c0} and chi_{c2} are updated. Possible contributions from the chi_{c0}(2P) and chi_{c2}(2P) states are discussed. A new upper limit for the branching fraction of the P- and CP-violating decay channel eta_c --> K^0_S K^0_S is reported. The detailed behavior of the cross section is updated and compared with QCD-based calculations.

Measurement of Branching Fraction and First Evidence of CP Violation in B0 --> a1+-(1260) pi-+ Decays

We also measure an upper limit on the product branching fraction for a possible decay with the same final state B0 --> a_2^+-(1320) pi^-+. In a time-dependent measurement to extract CP asymmetries, we find evidence of mixing-induced CP violation in B0 --> a_1^+-(1260) pi^-+ decays with a 3.1 sigma significance and the rate where the a_1^+-(1260) does not contain the spectator quark is found to dominate the rate where it does at the 4.1 sigma level. For the first time, signals are observed in the modes $Υ(1S) \to \ks K^+ π^- + {\rm c.c.}$, π+π−π0π0π^+ π^- π^0 π^0, and Υ(2S)→π+π−π0π0Υ(2S) \to π^+ π^- π^0 π^0, and evidence is found for the modes Υ(1S)→π+π−π0Υ(1S)\to π^+ π^- π^0, K∗(892)0Kˉ0+c.c.K^{\ast}(892)^0 \bar{K}^0+ {\rm c.c.}, and $Υ(2S) \to \ks K^+ π^- + {\rm c.c.}$ Branching fractions are measured for all the processes, while 90% confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions are also set for the modes with a statistical significance of less than 3σ3σ. Measurements of Branching Fractions and Direct CP Asymmetries for B -> K pi, B->pi pi and B->to KK Decays

We report measurements of the branching fractions and direct CP asymmetries (A_{CP}) for B->K pi, pi pi and KK decays (but not pi^0 pi^0) based on the final data sample of 772x10^6 B B-bar pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+ e^- collider. We set a 90% confidence-level upper limit for K^+- K^-+ at 2.0x10^{-7}; all other decays are observed with branching fractions ranging from 10^{-6} to 10^{-5}. In the $B^0/B^0-bar -> K^+-π^-+ mode, we confirm Belle's previously reported large A_{CP} with a value of -0.069 +- 0.014 +- 0.007 and a significance of 4.4 sigma. For all other flavor-specific modes, we find A_{CP} values consistent with zero, including A_{CP}(K^+- π^0) = +0.043 +- 0.024 +- 0.007 with 1.8 sigma significance. The difference of CP asymmetry between B^+- -> K^+- pi^0 and B^0/B^0-bar -> K^+-π^-+ is found to be Delta A_{K pi} equiv A_{CP} (K^+ pi^0) - A_{CP}(K^+ pi^-) = +0.112 +- 0.027 +- 0.007 with 4.0 sigma significance. We also calculate the ratios of partial widths for the B-> K pi decays. Measurements of inclusive differential cross sections for charged pion and kaon production in electron-positron annihilation have been carried out at a center-of-mass energy of Q = 10.52 GeV. The measurements were performed with the Belle detector at the KEKB electron-positron collider using a data sample containing 113 million e+e- -> qqbar events, where q={u,d,s,c}. We present charge-integrated differential cross sections dσ_h+-/dz for h+- = pi+-, K+- as a function of the relative hadron energy z = 2*E_h / sqrt{s} from 0.2 to 0.98. The combined statistical and systematic uncertainties for pi+- (K+-) are 4% (4%) at z ~ 0.6 and 15% (24%) at z ~ 0.9. The cross sections are the first measurements of the z-dependence of pion and kaon production for z > 0.7 as well as the first precision cross section measurements at a center-of-mass energy far below the Z^0 resonance used by the experiments at LEP and SLC.

Search for K−ppK^-pp bound state via γd→K+π−Xγd \rightarrow K^+ π^-X reaction at Eγ=1.5−2.4E_γ=1.5-2.4 GeV

A search for K−ppK^-pp bound state (the lightest kaonic nucleus) has been performed using the γd→K+π−Xγd \rightarrow K^+ π^- \rm{X} reaction at Eγ_γ=1.5-2.4 GeV at LEPS/SPring-8. The differential cross section of K+π−K^+ π^- photo-production off deuterium has been measured for the first time in this energy region, and a bump structure was searched for in the inclusive missing mass spectrum. A statistically significant bump structure was not observed in the region from 2.22 to 2.36 GeV/c2c^2, and the upper limits of the differential cross section for the K−ppK^-pp bound state production were determined to be 0.1−-0.7 μμ b (95% confidence level) for a set of assumed binding energy and width values.

Search for B -> h(*) nu nubar with the full Belle Y(4S) data sample

We report a search for the rare decays B -> h(*) nu nubar, where h(*) stands for K+, Ks0, K*+, K*0, pi+, pi0, rho+, rho0 and phi. The results are obtained from a 711 fb-1 data sample that contains 772 million BB pairs collected at the Y(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e- collider. We search for signal candidates by fully reconstructing a hadronic decay of the accompanying B meson and requiring a single h(*) meson left on the signal side. No significant signal is observed and we set upper limits on the branching fractions at 90% confidence level. The measurements of B+ -> K*+ nu nubar, B+ -> pi+ nu nubar, B0 -> pi0 nu nubar and B0 -> rho^0 nu nubar provide the world's currently most restrictive limits.

Study of e+e−→π+π−J/ψe^+ e^- \to π^+ π^- J/ψ and Observation of a Charged Charmonium-like State at Belle

The cross section for e+e−→π+π−J/ψe^+ e^- \to π^+ π^- J/ψ between 3.8 GeV and 5.5 GeV is measured with a 967 fb−1^{-1} data sample collected by the Belle detector at or near the Υ(nS)Υ(nS) (n=1, 2, ..., 5n = 1,\ 2,\ ...,\ 5) resonances. The Y(4260) state is observed, and its resonance parameters are determined. In addition, an excess of π+π−J/ψπ^+ π^- J/ψ production around 4 GeV is observed. This feature can be described by a Breit-Wigner parameterization with properties that are consistent with the Y(4008) state that was previously reported by Belle. In a study of Y(4260)→π+π−J/ψY(4260) \to π^+ π^- J/ψ decays, a structure is observed in the $M(π^\pm\jpsi)$ mass spectrum with 5.2σ5.2σ significance, with mass M=(3894.5±6.6±4.5)MeV/c2M=(3894.5\pm 6.6\pm 4.5) {\rm MeV}/c^2 and width Γ=(63±24±26)Γ=(63\pm 24\pm 26) MeV/c2c^{2}, where the errors are statistical and systematic, respectively. This structure can be interpreted as a new charged charmonium-like state.

Study of Exclusive B->X_u l nu Decays and Extraction of |V_{ub}| using Full Reconstruction Tagging at the Belle Experiment

We report the results of a study of the exclusive semileptonic decays B->pi0lnu, B->pi+lnu, B->rho0lnu, B->rho+lnu and B->omegalnu, where l represents an electron or a muon. The events are tagged by fully reconstructing a second B meson in the event in a hadronic decay mode. The measured branching fractions are Br(B->pi0lnu) = (0.80 +- 0.08 +- 0.04)x10^-4, Br(B->pi+lnu) = (1.49 +- 0.09 +- 0.07)x10^-4, Br(B->rho0lnu) = (1.83 +- 0.10 +- 0.10)x10^-4, Br(B->rho+lnu) = (3.22 +- 0.27 +- 0.24)x10^-4, and Br(B->omegalnu) =(1.07 +- 0.16 +- 0.07)x10^-4, where the first error is statistical and the second one is systematic. The obtained branching fractions are inclusive of soft photon emission. We also determine the branching fractions as a function of the 4-momentum transfer squared to the leptonic system q^2=(p_l+p_nu)^2, where p_l and p_nu are the lepton and neutrino 4-momenta, respectively. Using the pion modes, a recent LCSR calculation, lattice QCD results and a model-independent description of the hadronic form factor, a value of the CKM matrix element |V_{ub}| = (3.52 +- 0.29)x10^-3 is extracted. For the first time, a charmless state with invariant mass greater than 1 GeV/c^2, which might be dominated by the decay B->f2lnu, is observed. These results are obtained from a 711 1/fb data sample that contains 772 millions BB pairs, collected near the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+ e^- collider.

Signals are observed for the first time in the Υ(1S)→ϕK+K−Υ(1S) \to ϕK^+ K^-, ωπ+π−ωπ^+ π^-, K∗0K−π+K^{\ast 0} K^- π^+, K∗0K2∗0K^{\ast0} K_2^{\ast 0} and Υ(2S)→ϕK+K−Υ(2S) \to ϕK^+ K^-, K∗0K−π+K^{\ast 0} K^- π^+ decay modes. Branching fractions are determined for all the processes, while 90% confidence level upper limits are established on the branching fractions for the modes with a statistical significance less than 3σ3σ. First study of η_c, η(1760) and X(1835) production via η'π^+π^- final states in two-photon collisions

The invariant mass spectrum of the η' π^+ π^- final state produced in two-photon collisions is obtained using a 673 fb^{-1} data sample collected in the vicinity of the Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+e^- collider. We observe a clear signal of the η_c and measure its mass and width to be M(η_c)=(2982.7 +- 1.8(stat) +- 2.2(syst) +- 0.3(model)) MeV/c^2 and Γ(η_c) = (37.8^{+5.8}_{-5.3}(stat) +- 2.8(syst) +- 1.4(model)) MeV/c^2. The third error is an uncertainty due to possible interference between the η_c and a non-resonant component. We also report the first evidence for η(1760) decay to η' π^+ π^-; we find two solutions for its parameters, depending on the inclusion or not of the X(1835), whose existence is of marginal significance in our data. From a fit to the mass spectrum using coherent X(1835) and η(1760) resonant amplitudes, we set a 90% confidence level upper limit on the product Γ_{γγ} \BR (η' π^+ π^-) for the X(1835).

Measurement of the CP-violation Parameter sin2ϕ1ϕ_1 with a New Tagging Method at the Υ(5S)Υ(5S) Resonance

We report a measurement of the CP-violation parameter sin2ϕ1ϕ_1 at the Υ(5S)Υ(5S) resonance using a new tagging method, called "BB-ππ tagging." In Υ(5S)Υ(5S) decays containing a neutral BB meson, a charged BB, and a charged pion, the neutral BB is reconstructed in the J/ψKS0J/ψK_S^0 CP-eigenstate decay channel. The initial flavor of the neutral BB meson at the moment of the Υ(5S)Υ(5S) decay is opposite to that of the charged BB and may thus be inferred from the charge of the pion without reconstructing the charged BB. From the asymmetry between BB-π+π^+ and BB-π−π^- tagged J/ψKS0J/ψK_S^0 yields, we determine sin2ϕ1ϕ_1 = 0.57 ±\pm 0.58(stat) ±\pm 0.06(syst). The results are based on 121 fb−1^{-1} of data recorded by the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e−e^+ e^- collider.

Observation of the Helium 7 Lambda hypernucleus by the (e,e'K+) reaction

An experiment with a newly developed high-resolution kaon spectrometer (HKS) and a scattered electron spectrometer with a novel configuration was performed in Hall C at Jefferson Lab (JLab). The ground state of a neutron-rich hypernucleus, He 7 Lambda, was observed for the first time with the (e,e'K+) reaction with an energy resolution of ~0.6 MeV. This resolution is the best reported to date for hypernuclear reaction spectroscopy. Nuclear transparency and effective kaon-nucleon cross section from the A(e, e'K+) reaction

We have determined the transparency of the nuclear medium to kaons from A(e,e′K+)A(e,e^{'} K^{+}) measurements on 12^{12}C, 63^{63}Cu, and 197^{197}Au targets. The measurements were performed at the Jefferson Laboratory and span a range in four-momentum-transfer squared Q2^2=1.1 -- 3.0 GeV2^2. The nuclear transparency was defined as the ratio of measured kaon electroproduction cross sections with respect to deuterium, (σA/σDσ^{A}/σ^{D}). We further extracted the atomic number (AA) dependence of the transparency as parametrized by T=(A/2)α−1T= (A/2)^{α-1} and, within a simple model assumption, the in-medium effective kaon-nucleon cross sections. The effective cross sections extracted from the electroproduction data are found to be smaller than the free cross sections determined from kaon-nucleon scattering experiments, and the parameter αα was found to be significantly larger than those obtained from kaon-nucleus scattering. We have included similar comparisons between pion- and proton-nucleon effective cross sections as determined from electron scattering experiments, and pion-nucleus and proton-nucleus scattering data.

Our analysis accounts for this interference and allows the model uncertainty to be reduced. We also obtain the following charmonia masses and widths: M(ηc)=(2985.4±1.5(stat)−2.0+0.5(syst))M(η_c)=(2985.4\pm 1.5(stat)^{+0.5}_{-2.0}(syst)) MeV/c2c^2, Γ(ηc)=(35.1±3.1(stat)−1.6+1.0(syst))Γ(η_c)=(35.1\pm 3.1(stat)^{+1.0}_{-1.6}(syst)) MeV/c2c^2, M(ηc(2S))=(3636.1−4.2+3.9(stat+model)−2.0+0.7(syst))M(η_c(2S))=(3636.1^{+3.9}_{-4.2}(stat+model)^{+0.7}_{-2.0}(syst)) MeV/c2c^2, Γ(ηc(2S))=(6.6−5.1+8.4(stat+model)−0.9+2.6(syst))Γ(η_c(2S))=(6.6^{+8.4}_{-5.1}(stat+model)^{+2.6}_{-0.9}(syst)) MeV/c2c^2.

Measurement of Spin-Density Matrix Elements for ϕϕ-Meson Photoproduction from Protons and Deuterons Near Threshold

The LEPS/SPring-8 experiment made a comprehensive measurement of the spin-density matrix elements for γp→ϕpγp \to ϕp, γd→ϕpnγd \to ϕp n and γd→ϕdγd \to ϕd at forward production angles. A linearly polarized photon beam at EγE_γ=1.6-2.4 GeV was used for the production of ϕϕ mesons. The natural-parity Pomeron exchange processes remains dominant nearthreshold. The unnatural-parity processes of pseudoscalar exchange is visible in the production from nucleons but is greatly reduced in the coherent production from deuterons. There is no strong EγE_γ-dependence, but some dependence on momentum-transfer. A small but finite value of the spin-density matrix elements reflecting helicity-nonconserving amplitudes in the tt-channel is observed.

Measurement of the incoherent γd→ϕpnγd \to ϕp n photoproduction near threshold

We report measurements of differential cross sections and decay asymmetries of incoherent ϕϕ-meson photoproduction from the deuteron at forward angles using linearly polarized photons at \Eg=1.5-2.4 GeV. The nuclear transparency ratio for the deuteron shows a large suppression, and is consistent with the A-dependence of the ratio observed in a previous measurement with nuclear targets. The reduction for the deuteron cannot be adequately explained in term of isospin asymmetry. The present results suggest the need of refining our understanding of the ϕϕ-N interaction within a nucleus.

Near-threshold Lambda(1520) production by the gamma p -> K+Lambda(1520) reaction at forward K+ angles

Differential cross sections and photon-beam asymmetries for the gamma p -> K+ Lambda(1520) reaction have been measured with linearly polarized photon beams at energies from the threshold to 2.4 GeV at 0.6<cos(theta)<1. A new bump structure was found at W=2.11 GeV in the cross sections. The bump is not well reproduced by theoretical calculations introducing a nucleon resonance with J<=3/2. This result suggests that the bump might be produced by a nucleon resonance possibly with J>=5/2 or by a new reaction process, for example an interference effect with the phi photoproduction having a similar bump structure in the cross sections.
