A relaxation viewpoint to Unbalanced Optimal Transport: duality, optimality and Monge formulation

We present a general convex relaxation approach to study a wide class of Unbalanced Optimal Transport problems for finite non-negative measures with possibly different masses. These are obtained as the lower semicontinuous and convex envelope of a cost for non-negative Dirac masses. New general primal-dual formulations, optimality conditions, and metric-topological properties are carefully studied and discussed.

$L^2$-Gradient Flows of Spectral Functionals

We study the $L^2$-gradient flow of functionals $\mathcal F$ depending on the eigenvalues of Schrödinger potentials $V$ for a wide class of differential operators associated to closed, symmetric, and coercive bilinear forms, including the case of all the Dirichlet forms (as for second order elliptic operators in Euclidean domains or Riemannian manifolds). We suppose that $\mathcal F$ arises as the sum of a $-θ$-convex functional $\mathcal K$ with proper domain $\mathbb{K}\subset L^2$ forcing the admissible potentials to stay above a constant $V_{\rm min}$ and a term $\mathcal H(V)=φ(λ_1(V),\cdots,λ_J(V))$ which depends on the first $J$ eigenvalues associated to $V$ through a $C^1$ function $φ$. Even if $\mathcal H$ is not a smooth perturbation of a convex functional (and it is in fact concave in simple important cases as the sum of the first $J$ eigenvalues) and we do not assume any compactness of the sublevels of $\mathcal K$, we prove the convergence of the Minimizing Movement method to a solution $V\in H^1(0,T;L^2)$ of the differential inclusion $V'(t)\in -\partial_L^-\mathcal F(V(t))$, which under suitable compatibility conditions on $φ$ can be written as \[ V'(t)+\sum_{i=1}^J\partial_iφ(λ_1(V(t)),\dots, λ_J(V(t)))u_i^2(t)\in -\partial_F^-\mathcal K(V(t)) \] where $(u_1(t),\dots, u_J(t))$ is an orthonormal system of eigenfunctions associated to the eigenvalues $(λ_1(V(t)), ,\dots,λ_J(V(t)))$.

Visco-energetic solutions for a model of crack growth in brittle materials

Visco-energetic solutions have been recently advanced as a new solution concept for rate-independent systems, alternative to energetic solutions/quasistatic evolutions and balanced viscosity solutions. In the spirit of this novel concept, we revisit the analysis of the variational model proposed by Francfort and Marigo for the quasi-static crack growth in brittle materials, in the case of antiplane shear. In this context, visco-energetic solutions can be constructed by perturbing the time incremental scheme for quasistatic evolutions by means of a viscous correction inspired by the term introduced by Almgren, Taylor, and Wang in the study of mean curvature flows. With our main result we prove the existence of a visco-energetic solution with a given initial crack. We also show that, if the cracks have a finite number of tips evolving smoothly on a given time interval, visco-energetic solutions comply with Griffith's criterion.

Dissipative probability vector fields and generation of evolution semigroups in Wasserstein spaces

We introduce and investigate a notion of multivalued $λ$-dissipative probability vector field (MPVF) in the Wasserstein space $\mathcal{P}_2(\mathsf X)$ of Borel probability measures on a Hilbert space $\mathsf X$. Taking inspiration from the theory of dissipative operators in Hilbert spaces and of Wasserstein gradient flows of geodesically convex functionals, we study local and global well posedness of evolution equations driven by dissipative MPVFs. Our approach is based on a measure-theoretic version of the Explicit Euler scheme, for which we prove novel convergence results with optimal error estimates under an abstract CFL stability condition, which do not rely on compactness arguments and also hold when $\mathsf X$ has infinite dimension. We characterize the limit solutions by a suitable Evolution Variational Inequality (EVI), inspired by the Bénilan notion of integral solutions to dissipative evolutions in Banach spaces. Existence, uniqueness and stability of EVI solutions are then obtained under quite general assumptions, leading to the generation of a semigroup of nonlinear contractions.

Jump processes as Generalized Gradient Flows

We have created a functional framework for a class of non-metric gradient systems. The state space is a space of nonnegative measures, and the class of systems includes the Forward Kolmogorov equations for the laws of Markov jump processes on Polish spaces. This framework comprises a definition of a notion of solutions, a method to prove existence, and an archetype uniqueness result. We do this by using only the structure that is provided directly by the dissipation functional, which need not be homogeneous, and we do not appeal to any metric structure.

Nonlinear diffusion equations and curvature conditions in metric measure spaces

Aim of this paper is to provide new characterizations of the curvature dimension condition in the context of metric measure spaces (X,d,m). On the geometric side, our new approach takes into account suitable weighted action functionals which provide the natural modulus of K-convexity when one investigates the convexity properties of N-dimensional entropies. On the side of diffusion semigroups and evolution variational inequalities, our new approach uses the nonlinear diffusion semigroup induced by the N-dimensional entropy, in place of the heat flow. Under suitable assumptions (most notably the quadraticity of Cheeger's energy relative to the metric measure structure) both approaches are shown to be equivalent to the strong CD*(K,N) condition of Bacher-Sturm.

Bakry-Émery curvature-dimension condition and Riemannian Ricci curvature bounds

The aim of the present paper is to bridge the gap between the Bakry-Émery and the Lott-Sturm-Villani approaches to provide synthetic and abstract notions of lower Ricci curvature bounds. We start from a strongly local Dirichlet form ${\mathcal{E}}$ admitting a Carré du champ $Γ$ in a Polish measure space $(X,\mathfrak{m})$ and a canonical distance ${\mathsf{d}}_{\mathcal{E}}$ that induces the original topology of $X$. We first characterize the distinguished class of Riemannian Energy measure spaces, where ${\mathcal{E}}$ coincides with the Cheeger energy induced by ${\mathsf{d}}_{\mathcal{E}}$ and where every function $f$ with $Γ(f)\le1$ admits a continuous representative. In such a class, we show that if ${\mathcal{E}}$ satisfies a suitable weak form of the Bakry-Émery curvature dimension condition $\mathrm {BE}(K,\infty)$ then the metric measure space $(X,{\mathsf{d}},\mathfrak{m})$ satisfies the Riemannian Ricci curvature bound $\mathrm {RCD}(K,\infty)$ according to [Duke Math. J. 163 (2014) 1405-1490], thus showing the equivalence of the two notions. Two applications are then proved: the tensorization property for Riemannian Energy spaces satisfying the Bakry-Émery $\mathrm {BE}(K,N)$ condition (and thus the corresponding one for $\mathrm {RCD}(K,\infty)$ spaces without assuming nonbranching) and the stability of $\mathrm {BE}(K,N)$ with respect to Sturm-Gromov-Hausdorff convergence.

Optimal transport, Cheeger energies and contractivity of dynamic transport distances in extended spaces

We introduce the setting of extended metric-topological measure spaces as a general "Wiener-like" framework for optimal transport problems and nonsmooth metric analysis in infinite dimension. After a brief review of optimal transport tools for general Radon measures, we discuss the notions of the Cheeger energy, of the Radon measures concentrated on absolutely continuous curves, and of the induced "dynamic transport distances." We study their main properties and their links with the theory of Dirichlet forms and the Bakry-Émery curvature condition, in particular concerning the contractivity properties and the EVI formulation of the induced Heat semigroup.

On the duality between p-Modulus and probability measures

Motivated by recent developments on calculus in metric measure spaces $(X,\mathsf d,\mathfrak m)$, we prove a general duality principle between Fuglede's notion of $p$-modulus for families of finite Borel measures in $(X,\mathsf d)$ and probability measures with barycenter in $L^q(X,\mathfrak m)$, with $q$ dual exponent of $p\in (1,\infty)$. We apply this general duality principle to study null sets for families of parametric and non-parametric curves in $X$. In the final part of the paper we provide a new proof, independent of optimal transportation, of the equivalence of notions of weak upper gradient based on $p$-Modulus (Koskela-MacManus '98, Shanmugalingam '00) and suitable probability measures in the space of curves (Ambrosio-Gigli-Savare '11)

On the Bakry-Émery condition, the gradient estimates and the Local-to-Global property of RCD*(K,N) metric measure spaces

We prove higher summability and regularity of Γ(f) for functions f in spaces satisfying the Bakry-Émery condition BE(K,\infty). As a byproduct, we obtain various equivalent weak formulations of BE(K,N) and we prove the Local-to-Global property of the RCD*(K,N) condition in locally compact metric measure spaces (X,d,m), without assuming a priori the non-branching condition on the metric space.

On the transversality conditions and their genericity

In this note we review some results on the transversality conditions for a smooth Fredholm map $f: X \times (0,T) \to Y$ between two Banach spaces $X,Y$. These conditions are well-known in the realm of bifurcation theory and commonly accepted as "generic". Here we show that under the transversality assumptions the sections $C(t)=\{x:f(x,t)=0\}$ of the zero set of $f$ are discrete for every $t\in (0,T)$ and we discuss a somehow explicit family of perturbations of $f$ along which transversality holds up to a residual set. The application of these results to the case when $f$ is the $X$-differential of a time-dependent energy functional $E:X\times (0,T)\to R$ and $C(t)$ is the set of the critical points of $E$ provides the motivation and the main example of this paper.

Self-improvement of the Bakry-Émery condition and Wasserstein contraction of the heat flow in RCD(K,\infty) metric measure spaces

We prove that the linear heat flow in a RCD(K,\infty) metric measure space (X,d,m) satisfies a contraction property with respect to every L^p-Kantorovich-Rubinstein-Wasserstein distance. In particular, we obtain a precise estimate for the optimal W_\infty-coupling between two fundamental solutions in terms of the distance of the initial points. The result is a consequence of the equivalence between the RCD(K,\infty) lower Ricci bound and the corresponding Bakry-Émery condition for the canonical Cheeger-Dirichlet form in (X,d,m). The crucial tool is the extension to the non-smooth metric measure setting of the Bakry's argument, that allows to improve the commutation estimates between the Markov semigroup and the Carré du Champ associated to the Dirichlet form. This extension is based on a new a priori estimate and a capacitary argument for regular and tight Dirichlet forms that are of independent interest.

Cahn-Hilliard and Thin Film equations with nonlinear mobility as gradient flows in weighted-Wasserstein metrics

In this paper, we establish a novel approach to proving existence of non-negative weak solutions for degenerate parabolic equations of fourth order, like the Cahn-Hilliard and certain thin film equations. The considered evolution equations are in the form of a gradient flow for a perturbed Dirichlet energy with respect to a Wasserstein-like transport metric, and weak solutions are obtained as curves of maximal slope. Our main assumption is that the mobility of the particles is a concave function of their spatial density. A qualitative difference of our approach to previous ones is that essential properties of the solution - non-negativity, conservation of the total mass and dissipation of the energy - are automatically guaranteed by the construction from minimizing movements in the energy landscape.

Calculus and heat flow in metric measure spaces and applications to spaces with Ricci bounds from below

This paper is devoted to a deeper understanding of the heat flow and to the refinement of calculus tools on metric measure spaces (X,d,m). Our main results are: - A general study of the relations between the Hopf-Lax semigroup and Hamilton-Jacobi equation in metric spaces (X,d). - The equivalence of the heat flow in L^2(X,m) generated by a suitable Dirichlet energy and the Wasserstein gradient flow of the relative entropy functional in the space of probability measures P(X). - The proof of density in energy of Lipschitz functions in the Sobolev space W^{1,2}(X,d,m). - A fine and very general analysis of the differentiability properties of a large class of Kantorovich potentials, in connection with the optimal transport problem. Our results apply in particular to spaces satisfying Ricci curvature bounds in the sense of Lott & Villani [30] and Sturm [39,40], and require neither the doubling property nor the validity of the local Poincaré inequality.

Heat flow and calculus on metric measure spaces with Ricci curvature bounded below - the compact case

We provide a quick overview of various calculus tools and of the main results concerning the heat flow on compact metric measure spaces, with applications to spaces with lower Ricci curvature bounds. Topics include the Hopf-Lax semigroup and the Hamilton-Jacobi equation in metric spaces, a new approach to differentiation and to the theory of Sobolev spaces over metric measure spaces, the equivalence of the L^2-gradient flow of a suitably defined "Dirichlet energy" and the Wasserstein gradient flow of the relative entropy functional, a metric version of Brenier's Theorem, and a new (stronger) definition of Ricci curvature bound from below for metric measure spaces. This new notion is stable w.r.t. measured Gromov-Hausdorff convergence and it is strictly connected with the linearity of the heat flow.

Metric measure spaces with Riemannian Ricci curvature bounded from below

In this paper we introduce a synthetic notion of Riemannian Ricci bounds from below for metric measure spaces (X,d,m) which is stable under measured Gromov-Hausdorff convergence and rules out Finsler geometries. It can be given in terms of an enforcement of the Lott, Sturm and Villani geodesic convexity condition for the entropy coupled with the linearity of the heat flow. Besides stability, it enjoys the same tensorization, global-to-local and local-to-global properties. In these spaces, that we call RCD(K,\infty) spaces, we prove that the heat flow (which can be equivalently characterized either as the flow associated to the Dirichlet form, or as the Wasserstein gradient flow of the entropy) satisfies Wasserstein contraction estimates and several regularity properties, in particular Bakry-Emery estimates and the L^\infty-Lip Feller regularization. We also prove that the distance induced by the Dirichlet form coincides with d, that the local energy measure has density given by the square of Cheeger's relaxed slope and, as a consequence, that the underlying Brownian motion has continuous paths. All these results are obtained independently of Poincaré and doubling assumptions on the metric measure structure and therefore apply also to spaces which are not locally compact, as the infinite-dimensional ones

Sticky particle dynamics with interactions

We consider compressible pressureless fluid flows in Lagrangian coordinates in one space dimension. We assume that the fluid self-interacts through a force field generated by the fluid itself. We explain how this flow can be described by a differential inclusion on the space of transport maps, in particular when a sticky particle dynamics is assumed. We study a discrete particle approximation and we prove global existence and stability results for solutions of this system. In the particular case of the Euler-Poisson system in the attractive regime our approach yields an explicit representation formula for the solutions.

From Poincaré to logarithmic Sobolev inequalities: a gradient flow approach

We use the distances introduced in a previous joint paper to exhibit the gradient flow structure of some drift-diffusion equations for a wide class of entropy functionals. Functional inequalities obtained by the comparison of the entropy with the entropy production functional reflect the contraction properties of the flow. Our approach provides a unified framework for the study of the Kolmogorov-Fokker-Planck (KFP) equation.

Passing to the Limit in a Wasserstein Gradient Flow: From Diffusion to Reaction

We study a singular-limit problem arising in the modelling of chemical reactions. At finite ε > 0, the system is described by a Fokker-Planck convection-diffusion equation with a double-well convection potential. This potential is scaled by 1/ε, and in the limit ε -> 0, the solution concentrates onto the two wells, resulting into a limiting system that is a pair of ordinary differential equations for the density at the two wells. This convergence has been proved in Peletier, Savaré, and Veneroni, SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis, 42(4):1805-1825, 2010, using the linear structure of the equation. In this paper we re-prove the result by using solely the Wasserstein gradient-flow structure of the system. In particular we make no use of the linearity, nor of the fact that it is a second-order system. The first key step in this approach is a reformulation of the equation as the minimization of an action functional that captures the property of being a curve of maximal slope in an integrated form. The second important step is a rescaling of space. Using only the Wasserstein gradient-flow structure, we prove that the sequence of rescaled solutions is pre-compact in an appropriate topology. We then prove a Gamma-convergence result for the functional in this topology, and we identify the limiting functional and the differential equation that it represents. A consequence of these results is that solutions of the ε-problem converge to a solution of the limiting problem.

Contraction of general transportation costs along solutions to Fokker-Planck equations with monotone drifts

We shall prove new contraction properties of general transportation costs along nonnegative measure-valued solutions to Fokker-Planck equations in $R^d$, when the drift is a monotone (or $λ$-monotone) operator. A new duality approach to contraction estimates has been developed: it relies on the Kantorovich dual formulation of optimal transportation problems and on a variable-doubling technique. The latter is used to derive a new comparison property of solutions of the backward Kolmogorov (or dual) equation. The advantage of this technique is twofold: it directly applies to distributional solutions without requiring stronger regularity and it extends the Wasserstein theory of Fokker-Planck equations with gradient drift terms started by Jordan-Kinderlehrer-Otto (1998) to more general costs and monotone drifts, without requiring the drift to be a gradient and without assuming any growth conditions.

A Wasserstein approach to the one-dimensional sticky particle system

We present a simple approach to study the one-dimensional pressureless Euler system via adhesion dynamics in the Wasserstein space of probability measures with finite quadratic moments. Starting from a discrete system of a finite number of "sticky" particles, we obtain new explicit estimates of the solution in terms of the initial mass and momentum and we are able to construct an evolution semigroup in a measure-theoretic phase space, allowing mass distributions with finite quadratic moment and corresponding L^2-velocity fields. We investigate various interesting properties of this semigroup, in particular its link with the gradient flow of the (opposite) squared Wasserstein distance. Our arguments rely on an equivalent formulation of the evolution as a gradient flow in the convex cone of nondecreasing functions in the Hilbert space L^2(0,1), which corresponds to the Lagrangian system of coordinates given by the canonical monotone rearrangement of the measures.
