A first-order condition for the independence on $p$ of weak gradients

It is well known that on arbitrary metric measure spaces, the notion of minimal $p$-weak upper gradient may depend on $p$. In this paper we investigate how a first-order condition of the metric-measure structure, that we call Bounded Interpolation Property, guarantees that in fact such dependence is not present. We also show that the Bounded Interpolation Property is stable for pointed measure Gromov Hausdorff convergence and holds on a large class of spaces satisfying curvature dimension conditions.

Calculus and fine properties of functions of bounded variation on RCD spaces

We generalize the classical calculus rules satisfied by functions of bounded variation to the framework of RCD spaces. In the infinite dimensional setting we are able to define an analogue of the distributional differential and on finite dimensional spaces we prove fine properties and suitable calculus rules, such as the Vol'pert chain rule for vector valued functions.

Duals and pullbacks of normed modules

We give a general description of the dual of the pullback of a normed module. Ours is the natural generalization to the context of modules of the well-known fact that the dual of the Lebesgue-Bochner space $L^p([0,1],B)$ consists - quite roughly said - of $L^q$ maps from $[0,1]$ to the dual $B'$ of $B$ equipped with the weak$^*$ topology. In order to state our result, we study various fiberwise descriptions of a normed module that are of independent interest.

Local vector measures

Consider a BV function on a Riemannian manifold. What is its differential? And what about the Hessian of a convex function? These questions have clear answers in terms of (co)vector/matrix valued measures if the manifold is the Euclidean space. In more general curved contexts, the same objects can be perfectly understood via charts. However, charts are often unavailable in the less regular setting of metric geometry, where still the questions make sense. In this paper we propose a way to deal with this sort of problems and, more generally, to give a meaning to a concept of `measure acting in duality with sections of a given bundle', loosely speaking. Despite the generality, several classical results in measure theory like Riesz's and Alexandrov's theorems have a natural counterpart in this setting. Moreover, as we are going to discuss, the notions introduced here provide a unified framework for several key concepts in nonsmooth analysis that have been introduced more than two decades ago, such as: Ambrosio-Kirchheim's metric currents, Cheeger's Sobolev functions and Miranda's BV functions. Not surprisingly, the understanding of the structure of these objects improves with the regularity of the underlying space. We are particularly interested in the case of $\RCD$ spaces where, as we will argue, the regularity of several key measures of the type we study nicely matches the known regularity theory for vector fields, resulting in a very effective theory. We expect that the notions developed here will help creating stronger links between differential calculus in Alexandrov spaces (based on Perelman's DC charts) and in $\RCD$ ones (based on intrinsic tensor calculus).

Monotonicity formulas for harmonic functions in ${\rm RCD}(0,N)$ spaces

We generalize to the ${\rm RCD}(0,N)$ setting a family of monotonicity formulas by Colding and Minicozzi for positive harmonic functions in Riemannian manifolds with non-negative Ricci curvature. Rigidity and almost rigidity statements are also proven, the second appearing to be new even in the smooth setting. Motivated by the recent work in [AFM] we also introduce the notion of electrostatic potential in ${\rm RCD}$ spaces, which also satisfies our monotonicity formulas. Our arguments are mainly based on new estimates for harmonic functions in ${\rm RCD}(K,N)$ spaces and on a new functional version of the `(almost) outer volume cone implies (almost) outer metric cone' theorem.

Displacement convexity of Entropy and the distance cost Optimal Transportation

During the last decade Optimal Transport had a relevant role in the study of geometry of singular spaces that culminated with the Lott-Sturm-Villani theory. The latter is built on the characterisation of Ricci curvature lower bounds in terms of displacement convexity of certain entropy functionals along $W_{2}$-geodesics. Substantial recent advancements in the theory (localization paradigm and local-to-global property) have been obtained considering the different point of view of $L^1$-Optimal transport problems yielding a different curvature dimension $\mathsf{CD}^{1}(K,N)$ [8] formulated in terms of one-dimensional curvature properties of integral curves of Lipschitz maps. In this note we show that the two approaches produce the same curvature-dimension condition reconciling the two definitions. In particular we show that the $\mathsf{CD}^{1}(K,N)$ condition can be formulated in terms of displacement convexity along $W_{1}$-geodesics.

Behaviour of the reference measure on $\sf RCD$ spaces under charts

Mondino and Naber recently proved that finite dimensional $\sf RCD$ spaces are rectifiable. Here we show that the push-forward of the reference measure under the charts built by them is absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure. This result, read in conjunction with another recent work of us, has relevant implications on the structure of tangent spaces to $\sf RCD$ spaces. A key tool that we use is a recent paper by De Philippis-Rindler about the structure of measures on the Euclidean space.

Equivalence of two different notions of tangent bundle on rectifiable metric measure spaces

We prove that for a suitable class of metric measure spaces, the abstract notion of tangent module as defined by the first author can be isometrically identified with the space of $L^2$-sections of the `Gromov-Hausdorff tangent bundle'. The class of spaces $({\rm X},{\sf d},{\mathfrak m})$ we consider are PI spaces that for every $\varepsilon>0$ admit a countable collection of Borel sets $(U_i)$ covering ${\mathfrak m}$-a.e.\ ${\rm X}$ and corresponding $(1+\varepsilon)$-biLipschitz maps $φ_i:U_i\to{\mathbb R}^{k_i}$ such that $(φ_i)_*{\mathfrak m}\lower3pt\hbox{$|_{U_i}$}\ll\mathcal L^{k_i}$. This class is known to contain ${\sf RCD}^*(K,N)$ spaces. Part of the work we carry out is that to give a meaning to notion of $L^2$-sections of the Gromov-Hausdorff tangent bundle, in particular explaining what it means to have a measurable map assigning to ${\mathfrak m}$-a.e.\ $x\in {\rm X}$ an element of the pointed-Gromov-Hausdorff limit of the blow-up of ${\rm X}$ at $x$.

Bakry-Émery curvature-dimension condition and Riemannian Ricci curvature bounds

The aim of the present paper is to bridge the gap between the Bakry-Émery and the Lott-Sturm-Villani approaches to provide synthetic and abstract notions of lower Ricci curvature bounds. We start from a strongly local Dirichlet form ${\mathcal{E}}$ admitting a Carré du champ $Γ$ in a Polish measure space $(X,\mathfrak{m})$ and a canonical distance ${\mathsf{d}}_{\mathcal{E}}$ that induces the original topology of $X$. We first characterize the distinguished class of Riemannian Energy measure spaces, where ${\mathcal{E}}$ coincides with the Cheeger energy induced by ${\mathsf{d}}_{\mathcal{E}}$ and where every function $f$ with $Γ(f)\le1$ admits a continuous representative. In such a class, we show that if ${\mathcal{E}}$ satisfies a suitable weak form of the Bakry-Émery curvature dimension condition $\mathrm {BE}(K,\infty)$ then the metric measure space $(X,{\mathsf{d}},\mathfrak{m})$ satisfies the Riemannian Ricci curvature bound $\mathrm {RCD}(K,\infty)$ according to [Duke Math. J. 163 (2014) 1405-1490], thus showing the equivalence of the two notions. Two applications are then proved: the tensorization property for Riemannian Energy spaces satisfying the Bakry-Émery $\mathrm {BE}(K,N)$ condition (and thus the corresponding one for $\mathrm {RCD}(K,\infty)$ spaces without assuming nonbranching) and the stability of $\mathrm {BE}(K,N)$ with respect to Sturm-Gromov-Hausdorff convergence.

Euclidean spaces as weak tangents of infinitesimally Hilbertian metric spaces with Ricci curvature bounded below

We show that in any infinitesimally Hilbertian $CD^*(K,N)$-space at almost every point there exists a Euclidean weak tangent, i.e. there exists a sequence of dilations of the space that converges to a Euclidean space in the pointed measured Gromov-Hausdorff topology. The proof follows by considering iterated tangents and the splitting theorem for infinitesimally Hilbertian $CD^*(0,N)$-spaces.

Gromov-Hausdorff convergence of discrete transportation metrics

This paper continues the investigation of `Wasserstein-like' transportation distances for probability measures on discrete sets. We prove that the discrete transportation metrics on the d-dimensional discrete torus with mesh size 1/N converge, when $N\to\infty$, to the standard 2-Wasserstein distance W_2 on the continuous torus in the sense of Gromov-Hausdorff. This is the first convergence result for the recently developed discrete transportation metrics. The result shows the compatibility between these metrics and the well-established 2-Wasserstein metric.

On the differential structure of metric measure spaces and applications

The main goals of this paper are: i) To develop an abstract differential calculus on metric measure spaces by investigating the duality relations between differentials and gradients of Sobolev functions. This will be achieved without calling into play any sort of analysis in charts, our assumptions being: the metric space is complete and separable and the measure is Borel, non negative and locally finite. ii) To employ these notions of calculus to provide, via integration by parts, a general definition of distributional Laplacian, thus giving a meaning to an expression like $Δg=μ$, where $g$ is a function and $μ$ is a measure. iii) To show that on spaces with Ricci curvature bounded from below and dimension bounded from above, the Laplacian of the distance function is always a measure and that this measure has the standard sharp comparison properties. This result requires an additional assumption on the space, which reduces to strict convexity of the norm in the case of smooth Finsler structures and is always satisfied on spaces with linear Laplacian, a situation which is analyzed in detail.

Calculus and heat flow in metric measure spaces and applications to spaces with Ricci bounds from below

This paper is devoted to a deeper understanding of the heat flow and to the refinement of calculus tools on metric measure spaces (X,d,m). Our main results are: - A general study of the relations between the Hopf-Lax semigroup and Hamilton-Jacobi equation in metric spaces (X,d). - The equivalence of the heat flow in L^2(X,m) generated by a suitable Dirichlet energy and the Wasserstein gradient flow of the relative entropy functional in the space of probability measures P(X). - The proof of density in energy of Lipschitz functions in the Sobolev space W^{1,2}(X,d,m). - A fine and very general analysis of the differentiability properties of a large class of Kantorovich potentials, in connection with the optimal transport problem. Our results apply in particular to spaces satisfying Ricci curvature bounds in the sense of Lott & Villani [30] and Sturm [39,40], and require neither the doubling property nor the validity of the local Poincaré inequality.

Heat flow and calculus on metric measure spaces with Ricci curvature bounded below - the compact case

We provide a quick overview of various calculus tools and of the main results concerning the heat flow on compact metric measure spaces, with applications to spaces with lower Ricci curvature bounds. Topics include the Hopf-Lax semigroup and the Hamilton-Jacobi equation in metric spaces, a new approach to differentiation and to the theory of Sobolev spaces over metric measure spaces, the equivalence of the L^2-gradient flow of a suitably defined "Dirichlet energy" and the Wasserstein gradient flow of the relative entropy functional, a metric version of Brenier's Theorem, and a new (stronger) definition of Ricci curvature bound from below for metric measure spaces. This new notion is stable w.r.t. measured Gromov-Hausdorff convergence and it is strictly connected with the linearity of the heat flow.

Heat flow on Alexandrov spaces

We prove that on compact Alexandrov spaces with curvature bounded below the gradient flow of the Dirichlet energy in the $L^2$-space produces the same evolution as the gradient flow of the relative entropy in the $L^2$-Wasserstein space. This means that the heat flow is well defined by either one of the two gradient flows. Combining properties of these flows, we are able to deduce the Lipschitz continuity of the heat kernel as well as Bakry-Émery gradient estimates and the $Γ_2$-condition. Our identification is established by purely metric means, unlike preceding results relying on PDE techniques. Our approach generalizes to the case of heat flow with drift.

Metric measure spaces with Riemannian Ricci curvature bounded from below

In this paper we introduce a synthetic notion of Riemannian Ricci bounds from below for metric measure spaces (X,d,m) which is stable under measured Gromov-Hausdorff convergence and rules out Finsler geometries. It can be given in terms of an enforcement of the Lott, Sturm and Villani geodesic convexity condition for the entropy coupled with the linearity of the heat flow. Besides stability, it enjoys the same tensorization, global-to-local and local-to-global properties. In these spaces, that we call RCD(K,\infty) spaces, we prove that the heat flow (which can be equivalently characterized either as the flow associated to the Dirichlet form, or as the Wasserstein gradient flow of the entropy) satisfies Wasserstein contraction estimates and several regularity properties, in particular Bakry-Emery estimates and the L^\infty-Lip Feller regularization. We also prove that the distance induced by the Dirichlet form coincides with d, that the local energy measure has density given by the square of Cheeger's relaxed slope and, as a consequence, that the underlying Brownian motion has continuous paths. All these results are obtained independently of Poincaré and doubling assumptions on the metric measure structure and therefore apply also to spaces which are not locally compact, as the infinite-dimensional ones
