Kernel based Dirichlet sequences

Let X=(X1,X2,…)X=(X_1,X_2,\ldots) be a sequence of random variables with values in a standard space (S,B)(S,\mathcal{B}). Suppose \begin{gather*} X_1\simν\quad\text{and}\quad P\bigl(X_{n+1}\in\cdot\mid X_1,\ldots,X_n\bigr)=\frac{θν(\cdot)+\sum_{i=1}^nK(X_i)(\cdot)}{n+θ}\quad\quad\text{a.s.} \end{gather*} where θ>0θ>0 is a constant, νν a probability measure on B\mathcal{B}, and KK a random probability measure on B\mathcal{B}. Then, XX is exchangeable whenever KK is a regular conditional distribution for νν given any sub-σσ-field of B\mathcal{B}. Under this assumption, XX enjoys all the main properties of classical Dirichlet sequences, including Sethuraman's representation, conjugacy property, and convergence in total variation of predictive distributions. If μμ is the weak limit of the empirical measures, conditions for μμ to be a.s. discrete, or a.s. non-atomic, or μ≪νμ\llν a.s., are provided. Two CLT's are proved as well. The first deals with stable convergence while the second concerns total variation distance.

New perspectives on knockoffs construction

Let ΛΛ be the collection of all probability distributions for (X,X~)(X,\widetilde{X}), where XX is a fixed random vector and X~\widetilde{X} ranges over all possible knockoff copies of XX (in the sense of \cite{CFJL18}). Three topics are developed in this paper: (i) A new characterization of ΛΛ is proved; (ii) A certain subclass of ΛΛ, defined in terms of copulas, is introduced; (iii) The (meaningful) special case where the components of XX are conditionally independent is treated in depth. In real problems, after observing X=xX=x, each of points (i)-(ii)-(iii) may be useful to generate a value x~\widetilde{x} for X~\widetilde{X} conditionally on X=xX=x.

Quantitative bounds in the central limit theorem for mm-dependent random variables

For each n≥1n\ge 1, let Xn,1,…,Xn,NnX_{n,1},\ldots,X_{n,N_n} be real random variables and Sn=∑i=1NnXn,iS_n=\sum_{i=1}^{N_n}X_{n,i}. Let mn≥1m_n\ge 1 be an integer. Suppose (Xn,1,…,Xn,Nn)(X_{n,1},\ldots,X_{n,N_n}) is mnm_n-dependent, E(Xni)=0E(X_{ni})=0, E(Xni2)<∞E(X_{ni}^2)<\infty and σn2:=E(Sn2)>0σ_n^2:=E(S_n^2)>0 for all nn and ii. Then, \begin{gather*} d_W\Bigl(\frac{S_n}{σ_n},\,Z\Bigr)\le 30\,\bigl\{c^{1/3}+12\,U_n(c/2)^{1/2}\bigr\}\quad\quad\text{for all }n\ge 1\text{ and }c>0, \end{gather*} where dWd_W is Wasserstein distance, ZZ a standard normal random variable and $$U_n(c)=\frac{m_n}{σ_n^2}\,\sum_{i=1}^{N_n}E\Bigl[X_{n,i}^2\,1\bigl\{\abs{X_{n,i}}>c\,σ_n/m_n\bigr\}\Bigr].$$ Among other things, this estimate of dW(Sn/σn, Z)d_W\bigl(S_n/σ_n,\,Z\bigr) yields a similar estimate of dTV(Sn/σn, Z)d_{TV}\bigl(S_n/σ_n,\,Z\bigr) where dTVd_{TV} is total variation distance.

On the almost sure convergence of sums

Two counterexamples, addressing questions raised in \cite{AD} and \cite{PZ}, are provided. Both counterexamples are related to chaoses. Let Fn=Yn+ZnF_n=Y_n+Z_n. It may be that Fn⟶a.s.0F_n\overset{a.s.}\longrightarrow 0, Fn⟶L2+δ0F_n\overset{L_{2+δ}}\longrightarrow 0 and $E\bigl\{\sup_n\,\abs{F_n}^δ\bigr\}<\infty$, where δ>0δ>0 and YnY_n and ZnZ_n belong to chaoses of uniformly bounded degree, and yet YnY_n fails to converge to 0 a.s.

Asymptotics for randomly reinforced urns with random barriers

An urn contains black and red balls. Let ZnZ_n be the proportion of black balls at time nn and 0≤L<U≤10\leq L<U\leq 1 random barriers. At each time nn, a ball bnb_n is drawn. If bnb_n is black and Zn−1<UZ_{n-1}<U, then bnb_n is replaced together with a random number BnB_n of black balls. If bnb_n is red and Zn−1>LZ_{n-1}>L, then bnb_n is replaced together with a random number RnR_n of red balls. Otherwise, no additional balls are added, and bnb_n alone is replaced. In this paper, we assume Rn=BnR_n=B_n. Then, under mild conditions, it is shown that Zn⟶a.s.ZZ_n\overset{a.s.}\longrightarrow Z for some random variable ZZ, and \begin{gather*} D_n:=\sqrt{n}\,(Z_n-Z)\longrightarrow\mathcal{N}(0,σ^2)\quad\text{conditionally a.s.} \end{gather*} where σ2σ^2 is a certain random variance. Almost sure conditional convergence means that \begin{gather*} P\bigl(D_n\in\cdot\mid\mathcal{G}_n\bigr)\overset{weakly}\longrightarrow\mathcal{N}(0,\,σ^2)\quad\text{a.s.} \end{gather*} where P(Dn∈⋅∣Gn)P\bigl(D_n\in\cdot\mid\mathcal{G}_n\bigr) is a regular version of the conditional distribution of DnD_n given the past Gn\mathcal{G}_n. Thus, in particular, one obtains Dn⟶N(0,σ2)D_n\longrightarrow\mathcal{N}(0,σ^2) stably. It is also shown that L<Z<UL<Z<U a.s. and ZZ has non-atomic distribution.

Central limit theorems for an Indian buffet model with random weights

The three-parameter Indian buffet process is generalized. The possibly different role played by customers is taken into account by suitable (random) weights. Various limit theorems are also proved for such generalized Indian buffet process. Let LnL_n be the number of dishes experimented by the first nn customers, and let K‾n=(1/n)∑i=1nKi\overline{K}_n=(1/n)\sum_{i=1}^nK_i where KiK_i is the number of dishes tried by customer ii. The asymptotic distributions of LnL_n and K‾n\overline{K}_n, suitably centered and scaled, are obtained. The convergence turns out to be stable (and not only in distribution). As a particular case, the results apply to the standard (i.e., nongeneralized) Indian buffet process.

Two versions of the fundamental theorem of asset pricing

Let LL be a convex cone of real random variables on the probability space (Ω,A,P0)(Ω,\mathcal{A},P_0). The existence of a probability PP on A\mathcal{A} such that $$ P \sim P_0,\quad E_P \abs{X}< \infty\, \text{ and } \, E_P(X) \leq 0\, \text{ for all }X \in L $$ is investigated. Two results are provided. In the first, PP is a finitely additive probability, while PP is σσ-additive in the second. If LL is a linear space then −X∈L-X\in L whenever X∈LX\in L, so that EP(X)≤0E_P(X)\leq 0 turns into EP(X)=0E_P(X)=0. Hence, the results apply to various significant frameworks, including equivalent martingale measures and equivalent probability measures with given marginals.

Exchangeable sequences driven by an absolutely continuous random measure

Let SS be a Polish space and (Xn:n≥1)(X_n:n\geq1) an exchangeable sequence of SS-valued random variables. Let αn(⋅)=P(Xn+1∈⋅∣X1,.˙.,Xn)α_n(\cdot)=P(X_{n+1}\in \cdot\mid X_1,\...,X_n) be the predictive measure and αα a random probability measure on SS such that αn⟶weakαα_n\stackrel{\mathrm{weak}}{\longrightarrow}α a.s. Two (related) problems are addressed. One is to give conditions for α≪λα\llλ a.s., where λλ is a (nonrandom) σσ-finite Borel measure on SS. Such conditions should concern the finite dimensional distributions L(X1,.˙.,Xn)\mathcal {L}(X_1,\...,X_n), n≥1n\geq1, only. The other problem is to investigate whether $\Vert\alp ha_n-α\Vert\stackrel{\mathrm{a.s.}}{\longrightarrow}0$, where ∥⋅∥\Vert\cdot\Vert is total variation norm. Various results are obtained. Some of them do not require exchangeability, but hold under the weaker assumption that (Xn)(X_n) is conditionally identically distributed, in the sense of [Ann. Probab. 32 (2004) 2029-2052].

A note on a universal random variate generator for integer-valued random variables

A universal generator for integer-valued square-integrable random variables is introduced. The generator relies on a rejection technique based on a generalization of the inversion formula for integer-valued random variables. The proposal gives rise to a simple algorithm which may be implemented in a few code lines and which may show good performance when the classical families of distributions - such as the Poisson and the Binomial - are considered. In addition, the method is suitable for the computer generation of integer-valued random variables which display closed-form characteristic functions, but do not possess a probability function expressible in a simple analytical way. As an example of such a framework, an application to the Poisson-Tweedie distribution is provided.

Statistical inference on the h-index with an application to top-scientist performance

Despite the huge amount of literature on h-index, few papers have been devoted to the statistical analysis of h-index when a probabilistic distribution is assumed for citation counts. The present contribution relies on showing the available inferential techniques, by providing the details for proper point and set estimation of the theoretical h-index. Moreover, some issues on simultaneous inference - aimed to produce suitable scholar comparisons - are carried out. Finally, the analysis of the citation dataset for the Nobel Laureates (in the last five years) and for the Fields medallists (from 2002 onward) is proposed.

Statistical analysis of the Hirsch Index

The Hirsch index (commonly referred to as h-index) is a bibliometric indicator which is widely recognized as effective for measuring the scientific production of a scholar since it summarizes size and impact of the research output. In a formal setting, the h-index is actually an empirical functional of the distribution of the citation counts received by the scholar. Under this approach, the asymptotic theory for the empirical h-index has been recently exploited when the citation counts follow a continuous distribution and, in particular, variance estimation has been considered for the Pareto-type and the Weibull-type distribution families. However, in bibliometric applications, citation counts display a distribution supported by the integers. Thus, we provide general properties for the empirical h-index under the small- and large-sample settings. In addition, we also introduce consistent nonparametric variance estimation, which allows for the implemention of large-sample set estimation for the theoretical h-index.

Finitely additive equivalent martingale measures

Let LL be a linear space of real bounded random variables on the probability space (Ω,A,P0)(Ω,\mathcal{A},P_0). There is a finitely additive probability PP on A\mathcal{A}, such that P∼P0P\sim P_0 and EP(X)=0E_P(X)=0 for all X∈LX\in L, if and only if c EQ(X)≤ess sup(−X)c\,E_Q(X)\leq\text{ess sup}(-X), X∈LX\in L, for some constant c>0c>0 and (countably additive) probability QQ on A\mathcal{A} such that Q∼P0Q\sim P_0. A necessary condition for such a PP to exist is L−L∞+ˉ ∩L∞+={0}\bar{L-L_\infty^+}\,\cap L_\infty^+=\{0\}, where the closure is in the norm-topology. If P0P_0 is atomic, the condition is sufficient as well. In addition, there is a finitely additive probability PP on A\mathcal{A}, such that P≪P0P\ll P_0 and EP(X)=0E_P(X)=0 for all X∈LX\in L, if and only if ess sup(X)≥0\text{ess sup}(X)\geq 0 for all X∈LX\in L.

Rate of convergence of predictive distributions for dependent data

This paper deals with empirical processes of the type Cn(B)=n{μn(B)−P(Xn+1∈B∣X1,...,Xn)},C_n(B)=\sqrt{n}\{μ_n(B)-P(X_{n+1}\in B\mid X_1,...,X_n)\}, where (Xn)(X_n) is a sequence of random variables and μn=(1/n)∑i=1nδXiμ_n=(1/n)\sum_{i=1}^nδ_{X_i} the empirical measure. Conditions for sup⁡B∣Cn(B)∣\sup_B|C_n(B)| to converge stably (in particular, in distribution) are given, where BB ranges over a suitable class of measurable sets. These conditions apply when (Xn)(X_n) is exchangeable or, more generally, conditionally identically distributed (in the sense of Berti et al. [Ann. Probab. 32 (2004) 2029--2052]). By such conditions, in some relevant situations, one obtains that sup⁡B∣Cn(B)∣→P0\sup_B|C_n(B)|\stackrel{P}{\to}0 or even that nsup⁡B∣Cn(B)∣\sqrt{n}\sup_B|C_n(B)| converges a.s. Results of this type are useful in Bayesian statistics.
