Quadratic vector equations on complex upper half-plane

We consider the nonlinear equation $-\frac{1}{m}=z+Sm$ with a parameter $z$ in the complex upper half plane $\mathbb{H} $, where $S$ is a positivity preserving symmetric linear operator acting on bounded functions. The solution with values in $ \mathbb{H}$ is unique and its $z$-dependence is conveniently described as the Stieltjes transforms of a family of measures $v$ on $\mathbb{R}$. In [AEK17a] we qualitatively identified the possible singular behaviors of $v$: under suitable conditions on $S$ we showed that in the density of $v$ only algebraic singularities of degree two or three may occur. In this paper we give a comprehensive analysis of these singularities with uniform quantitative controls. We also find a universal shape describing the transition regime between the square root and cubic root singularities. Finally, motivated by random matrix applications in the companion paper [AEK16b], we present a complete stability analysis of the equation for any $z\in \mathbb{H}$, including the vicinity of the singularities.

Spectral rigidity for addition of random matrices at the regular edge

We consider the sum of two large Hermitian matrices $A$ and $B$ with a Haar unitary conjugation bringing them into a general relative position. We prove that the eigenvalue density on the scale slightly above the local eigenvalue spacing is asymptotically given by the free convolution of the laws of $A$ and $B$ as the dimension of the matrix increases. This implies optimal rigidity of the eigenvalues and optimal rate of convergence in Voiculescu's theorem. Our previous works [3,4] established these results in the bulk spectrum, the current paper completely settles the problem at the spectral edges provided they have the typical square-root behavior. The key element of our proof is to compensate the deterioration of the stability of the subordination equations by sharp error estimates that properly account for the local density near the edge. Our results also hold if the Haar unitary matrix is replaced by the Haar orthogonal matrix.

Local law of addition of random matrices on optimal scale

The eigenvalue distribution of the sum of two large Hermitian matrices, when one of them is conjugated by a Haar distributed unitary matrix, is asymptotically given by the free convolution of their spectral distributions. We prove that this convergence also holds locally in the bulk of the spectrum, down to the optimal scales larger than the eigenvalue spacing. The corresponding eigenvectors are fully delocalized. Similar results hold for the sum of two real symmetric matrices, when one is conjugated by a Haar orthogonal matrix.

Local Stability of the Free Additive Convolution

We prove that the system of subordination equations, defining the free additive convolution of two probability measures, is stable away from the edges of the support and blow-up singularities by showing that the recent smoothness condition of Kargin is always satisfied. As an application, we consider the local spectral statistics of the random matrix ensemble $A+UBU^*$, where $U$ is a Haar distributed random unitary or orthogonal matrix, and $A$ and $B$ are deterministic matrices. In the bulk regime, we prove that the empirical spectral distribution of $A+UBU^*$ concentrates around the free additive convolution of the spectral distributions of $A$ and $B$ on scales down to $N^{-2/3}$.

Universality for a class of random band matrices

We prove the universality for the eigenvalue gap statistics in the bulk of the spectrum for band matrices, in the regime where the band width is comparable with the dimension of the matrix, $W\sim N$. All previous results concerning universality of non-Gaussian random matrices are for mean-field models. By relying on a new mean-field reduction technique, we deduce universality from quantum unique ergodicity for band matrices.

Delocalization for a class of random block band matrices

We consider $N\times N$ Hermitian random matrices $H$ consisting of blocks of size $M\geq N^{6/7}$. The matrix elements are i.i.d. within the blocks, close to a Gaussian in the four moment matching sense, but their distribution varies from block to block to form a block-band structure, with an essential band width $M$. We show that the entries of the Green's function $G(z)=(H-z)^{-1}$ satisfy the local semicircle law with spectral parameter $z=E+\mathbf{i}η$ down to the real axis for any $η\gg N^{-1}$, using a combination of the supersymmetry method inspired by \cite{Sh2014} and the Green's function comparison strategy. Previous estimates were valid only for $η\gg M^{-1}$. The new estimate also implies that the eigenvectors in the middle of the spectrum are fully delocalized.

Fixed energy universality for generalized Wigner matrices

We prove the Wigner-Dyson-Mehta conjecture at fixed energy in the bulk of the spectrum for generalized symmetric and Hermitian Wigner matrices. Previous results concerning the universality of random matrices either require an averaging in the energy parameter or they hold only for Hermitian matrices if the energy parameter is fixed. We develop a homogenization theory of the Dyson Brownian motion and show that microscopic universality follows from mesoscopic statistics.

Isotropic Local Laws for Sample Covariance and Generalized Wigner Matrices

We consider sample covariance matrices of the form $X^*X$, where $X$ is an $M \times N$ matrix with independent random entries. We prove the isotropic local Marchenko-Pastur law, i.e. we prove that the resolvent $(X^* X - z)^{-1}$ converges to a multiple of the identity in the sense of quadratic forms. More precisely, we establish sharp high-probability bounds on the quantity $\langle v, (X^* X - z)^{-1} w \rangle - \langle v,w\rangle m(z)$, where $m$ is the Stieltjes transform of the Marchenko-Pastur law and $v, w \in \mathbb C^N$. We require the logarithms of the dimensions $M$ and $N$ to be comparable. Our result holds down to scales $Im z \geq N^{-1+ε}$ and throughout the entire spectrum away from 0. We also prove analogous results for generalized Wigner matrices.

Universality for Random Matrix Flows with Time-dependent Density

We show that the Dyson Brownian Motion exhibits local universality after a very short time assuming that local rigidity and level repulsion hold. These conditions are verified, hence bulk spectral universality is proven, for a large class of Wigner-like matrices, including deformed Wigner ensembles and ensembles with non-stochastic variance matrices whose limiting densities differ from the Wigner semicircle law.

Edge Universality of Beta Ensembles

We prove the edge universality of the beta ensembles for any $β\ge 1$, provided that the limiting spectrum is supported on a single interval, and the external potential is $\mathscr{C}^4$ and regular. We also prove that the edge universality holds for generalized Wigner matrices for all symmetry classes. Moreover, our results allow us to extend bulk universality for beta ensembles from analytic potentials to potentials in class $\mathscr{C}^4$.

Gap Universality of Generalized Wigner and beta-Ensembles

We consider generalized Wigner ensembles and general beta-ensembles with analytic potentials for any beta larger than 1. The recent universality results in particular assert that the local averages of consecutive eigenvalue gaps in the bulk of the spectrum are universal in the sense that they coincide with those of the corresponding Gaussian beta-ensembles. In this article, we show that local averaging is not necessary for this result, i.e. we prove that the single gap distributions in the bulk are universal.

Random matrices, log-gases and Holder regularity

The Wigner-Dyson-Gaudin-Mehta conjecture asserts that the local eigenvalue statistics of large real and complex Hermitian matrices with independent, identically distributed entries are universal in a sense that they depend only on the symmetry class of the matrix and otherwise are independent of the details of the distribution. We present the recent solution to this half-century old conjecture. We explain how stochastic tools, such as the Dyson Brownian motion, and PDE ideas, such as De Giorgi-Nash-Moser regularity theory, were combined in the solution. We also show related results for log-gases that represent a universal model for strongly correlated systems. Finally, in the spirit of Wigner's original vision, we discuss the extensions of these universality results to more realistic physical systems such as random band matrices.

The Altshuler-Shklovskii Formulas for Random Band Matrices I: the Unimodular Case

We consider the spectral statistics of large random band matrices on mesoscopic energy scales. We show that the two-point correlation function of the local eigenvalue density exhibits a universal power law behaviour that differs from the Wigner-Dyson-Mehta statistics. This law had been predicted in the physics literature by Altshuler and Shklovskii [4]; it describes the correlations of the eigenvalue density in general metallic samples with weak disorder. Our result rigorously establishes the Altshuler-Shklovskii formulas for band matrices. In two dimensions, where the leading term vanishes owing to an algebraic cancellation, we identify the first non-vanishing term and show that it differs substantially from the prediction of Kravtsov and Lerner [33].

The Altshuler-Shklovskii Formulas for Random Band Matrices II: the General Case

The Altshuler-Shklovskii formulas [1] predict, for any disordered quantum system in the diffusive regime, a universal power law behaviour for the correlation functions of the mesoscopic eigenvalue density. In this paper and its companion [2], we prove these formulas for random band matrices. In [2] we introduced a diagrammatic approach and presented robust estimates on general diagrams under certain simplifying assumptions. In this paper we remove these assumptions by giving a general estimate of the subleading diagrams. We also give a precise analysis of the leading diagrams which give rise to the Altschuler-Shklovskii power laws. Moreover, we introduce a family of general random band matrices which interpolates between real symmetric $(β=1)$ and complex Hermitian $(β=2)$ models, and track the transition for the mesoscopic density-density correlation. Finally, we address the higher-order correlation functions by proving that they behave asymptotically according to a Gaussian process whose covariance is given by the Altshuler-Shklovskii formulas.

Averaging Fluctuations in Resolvents of Random Band Matrices

We consider a general class of random matrices whose entries are centred random variables, independent up to a symmetry constraint. We establish precise high-probability bounds on the averages of arbitrary monomials in the resolvent matrix entries. Our results generalize the previous results of [5,16,17] which constituted a key step in the proof of the local semicircle law with optimal error bound in mean-field random matrix models. Our bounds apply to random band matrices, and improve previous estimates from order 2 to order 4 in the cases relevant for applications. In particular, they lead to a proof of the diffusion approximation for the magnitude of the resolvent of random band matrices. This, in turn, implies new delocalization bounds on the eigenvectors. The applications are presented in a separate paper [3].

Delocalization and Diffusion Profile for Random Band Matrices

We consider Hermitian and symmetric random band matrices $H = (h_{xy})$ in $d \geq 1$ dimensions. The matrix entries $h_{xy}$, indexed by $x,y \in (\bZ/L\bZ)^d$, are independent, centred random variables with variances $s_{xy} = \E |h_{xy}|^2$. We assume that $s_{xy}$ is negligible if $|x-y|$ exceeds the band width $W$. In one dimension we prove that the eigenvectors of $H$ are delocalized if $W\gg L^{4/5}$. We also show that the magnitude of the matrix entries $\abs{G_{xy}}^2$ of the resolvent $G=G(z)=(H-z)^{-1}$ is self-averaging and we compute $\E \abs{G_{xy}}^2$. We show that, as $L\to\infty$ and $W\gg L^{4/5}$, the behaviour of $\E |G_{xy}|^2$ is governed by a diffusion operator whose diffusion constant we compute. Similar results are obtained in higher dimensions.

Local Eigenvalue Density for General MANOVA Matrices

We consider random n\times n matrices of the form (XX*+YY*)^{-1/2}YY*(XX*+YY*)^{-1/2}, where X and Y have independent entries with zero mean and variance one. These matrices are the natural generalization of the Gaussian case, which are known as MANOVA matrices and which have joint eigenvalue density given by the third classical ensemble, the Jacobi ensemble. We show that, away from the spectral edge, the eigenvalue density converges to the limiting density of the Jacobi ensemble even on the shortest possible scales of order 1/n (up to \log n factors). This result is the analogue of the local Wigner semicircle law and the local Marchenko-Pastur law for general MANOVA matrices.

Local semicircle law with imprimitive variance matrix

We extend the proof of the local semicircle law for generalized Wigner matrices given in [4] to the case when the matrix of variances has an eigenvalue $ -1 $. In particular, this result provides a short proof of the optimal local Marchenko-Pastur law at the hard edge (i.e. around zero) for sample covariance matrices $ \boldsymbol{\mathrm{X}}^\ast \boldsymbol{\mathrm{X}} $, where the variances of the entries of $ \boldsymbol{\mathrm{X}} $ may vary.

The Local Semicircle Law for a General Class of Random Matrices

We consider a general class of $N\times N$ random matrices whose entries $h_{ij}$ are independent up to a symmetry constraint, but not necessarily identically distributed. Our main result is a local semicircle law which improves previous results [14] both in the bulk and at the edge. The error bounds are given in terms of the basic small parameter of the model, $\max_{i,j} \E \abs{h_{ij}}^2$. As a consequence, we prove the universality of the local $n$-point correlation functions in the bulk spectrum for a class of matrices whose entries do not have comparable variances, including random band matrices with band width $W\gg N^{1-\e_n}$ with some $\e_n>0$ and with a negligible mean-field component. In addition, we provide a coherent and pedagogical proof of the local semicircle law, streamlining and strengthening previous arguments from [3,4,16].

A comment on the Wigner-Dyson-Mehta bulk universality conjecture for Wigner matrices

Recently we proved (EPRSY, ERSTVY, ESY4, ESYY, EYY, EYY2, EYYrigi) that the eigenvalue correlation functions of a general class of random matrices converge, weakly with respect to the energy, to the corresponding ones of Gaussian matrices. Tao and Vu \cite{TV5} gave a proof that for the special case of Hermitian Wigner matrices the convergence can be strengthened to vague convergence at any fixed energy in the bulk. In this article we show that this theorem is an immediate corollary of our earlier results. Indeed, a more general form of this theorem also follows directly from our work \cite{EKYY2}.

Bulk Universality of General $β$-Ensembles with Non-convex Potential

We prove the bulk universality of the $β$-ensembles with non-convex regular analytic potentials for any $β>0$. This removes the convexity assumption appeared in our earlier work. The convexity condition enabled us to use the logarithmic Sobolev inequality to estimate events with small probability. The new idea is to introduce a "convexified measure" so that the local statistics are preserved under this convexification.

Relativistic Scott correction in self-generated magnetic fields

We consider a large neutral molecule with total nuclear charge $Z$ in a model with self-generated classical magnetic field and where the kinetic energy of the electrons is treated relativistically. To ensure stability, we assume that $Z α< 2/π$, where $α$ denotes the fine structure constant. We are interested in the ground state energy in the simultaneous limit $Z \rightarrow \infty$, $α\rightarrow 0$ such that $κ=Z α$ is fixed. The leading term in the energy asymptotics is independent of $κ$, it is given by the Thomas-Fermi energy of order $Z^{7/3}$ and it is unchanged by including the self-generated magnetic field. We prove the first correction term to this energy, the so-called Scott correction of the form $S(αZ) Z^2$. The current paper extends the result of \cite{SSS} on the Scott correction for relativistic molecules to include a self-generated magnetic field. Furthermore, we show that the corresponding Scott correction function $S$, first identified in \cite{SSS}, is unchanged by including a magnetic field. We also prove new Lieb-Thirring inequalities for the relativistic kinetic energy with magnetic fields.

Spectral Statistics of Erd{\H o}s-Rényi Graphs II: Eigenvalue Spacing and the Extreme Eigenvalues

We consider the ensemble of adjacency matrices of Erd{\H o}s-Rényi random graphs, i.e.\ graphs on $N$ vertices where every edge is chosen independently and with probability $p \equiv p(N)$. We rescale the matrix so that its bulk eigenvalues are of order one. Under the assumption $p N \gg N^{2/3}$, we prove the universality of eigenvalue distributions both in the bulk and at the edge of the spectrum. More precisely, we prove (1) that the eigenvalue spacing of the Erd{\H o}s-Rényi graph in the bulk of the spectrum has the same distribution as that of the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble; and (2) that the second largest eigenvalue of the Erd{\H o}s-Rényi graph has the same distribution as the largest eigenvalue of the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble. As an application of our method, we prove the bulk universality of generalized Wigner matrices under the assumption that the matrix entries have at least $4 + ε$ moments.

Universality for random matrices and log-gases

Eugene Wigner's revolutionary vision predicted that the energy levels of large complex quantum systems exhibit a universal behavior: the statistics of energy gaps depend only on the basic symmetry type of the model. Simplified models of Wigner's thesis have recently become mathematically accessible. For mean field models represented by large random matrices with independent entries, the celebrated Wigner-Dyson-Gaudin-Mehta (WDGM) conjecture asserts that the local eigenvalue statistics are universal. For invariant matrix models, the eigenvalue distributions are given by a log-gas with potential $V$ and inverse temperature $β= 1, 2, 4$. corresponding to the orthogonal, unitary and symplectic ensembles. For $β\not \in \{1, 2, 4\}$, there is no natural random matrix ensemble behind this model, but the analogue of the WDGM conjecture asserts that the local statistics are independent of $V$. In these lecture notes we review the recent solution to these conjectures for both invariant and non-invariant ensembles. We will discuss two different notions of universality in the sense of (i) local correlation functions and (ii) gap distributions. We will demonstrate that the local ergodicity of the Dyson Brownian motion is the intrinsic mechanism behind the universality. In particular, we review the solution of Dyson's conjecture on the local relaxation time of the Dyson Brownian motion. Additionally, the gap distribution requires a De Giorgi-Nash-Moser type Hölder regularity analysis for a discrete parabolic equation with random coefficients. Related questions such as the local version of Wigner's semicircle law and delocalization of eigenvectors will also be discussed. We will also explain how these results can be extended beyond the mean field models, especially to random band matrices.

preprint2012arXiv

Universality of local spectral statistics of random matrices

The Wigner-Gaudin-Mehta-Dyson conjecture asserts that the local eigenvalue statistics of large random matrices exhibit universal behavior depending only on the symmetry class of the matrix ensemble. For invariant matrix models, the eigenvalue distributions are given by a log-gas with inverse temperature $β= 1, 2, 4$, corresponding to the orthogonal, unitary and symplectic ensembles. For $β\not \in \{1, 2, 4\}$, there is no matrix model behind this model, but the statistical physics interpretation of the log-gas is still valid for all $β> 0$. The universality conjecture for invariant ensembles asserts that the local eigenvalue statistics are independent of $V$. In this article, we review our recent solution to the universality conjecture for both invariant and non-invariant ensembles. We will also demonstrate that the local ergodicity of the Dyson Brownian motion is the intrinsic mechanism behind the universality. Furthermore, we review the solution of Dyson's conjecture on the local relaxation time of the Dyson Brownian motion. Related questions such as delocalization of eigenvectors and local version of Wigner's semicircle law will also be discussed.

Anderson Localization at Band Edges for Random Magnetic Fields

We consider a magnetic Schrödinger operator in two dimensions. The magnetic field is given as the sum of a large and constant magnetic field and a random magnetic field. Moreover, we allow for an additional deterministic potential as well as a magnetic field which are both periodic. We show that the spectrum of this operator is contained in broadened bands around the Landau levels and that the edges of these bands consist of pure point spectrum with exponentially decaying eigenfunctions. The proof is based on a recent Wegner estimate obtained in \cite{EH2} and a multiscale analysis.

Bulk universality for generalized Wigner matrices

Consider $N\times N$ Hermitian or symmetric random matrices $H$ where the distribution of the $(i,j)$ matrix element is given by a probability measure $ν_{ij}$ with a subexponential decay. Let $σ_{ij}^2$ be the variance for the probability measure $ν_{ij}$ with the normalization property that $\sum_{i} σ^2_{ij} = 1$ for all $j$. Under essentially the only condition that $c\le N σ_{ij}^2 \le c^{-1}$ for some constant $c>0$, we prove that, in the limit $N \to \infty$, the eigenvalue spacing statistics of $H$ in the bulk of the spectrum coincide with those of the Gaussian unitary or orthogonal ensemble (GUE or GOE). We also show that for band matrices with bandwidth $M$ the local semicircle law holds to the energy scale $M^{-1}$.

Quantum Diffusion and Delocalization for Band Matrices with General Distribution

We consider Hermitian and symmetric random band matrices $H$ in $d \geq 1$ dimensions. The matrix elements $H_{xy}$, indexed by $x,y \in Λ\subset \Z^d$, are independent and their variances satisfy $σ_{xy}^2:=\E \abs{H_{xy}}^2 = W^{-d} f((x - y)/W)$ for some probability density $f$. We assume that the law of each matrix element $H_{xy}$ is symmetric and exhibits subexponential decay. We prove that the time evolution of a quantum particle subject to the Hamiltonian $H$ is diffusive on time scales $t\ll W^{d/3}$. We also show that the localization length of the eigenvectors of $H$ is larger than a factor $W^{d/6}$ times the band width $W$. All results are uniform in the size $\absΛ$ of the matrix. This extends our recent result \cite{erdosknowles} to general band matrices. As another consequence of our proof we show that, for a larger class of random matrices satisfying $\sum_xσ_{xy}^2=1$ for all $y$, the largest eigenvalue of $H$ is bounded with high probability by $2 + M^{-2/3 + ε}$ for any $ε> 0$, where $M \deq 1 / (\max_{x,y} σ_{xy}^2)$.

Rigidity of Eigenvalues of Generalized Wigner Matrices

Consider $N\times N$ hermitian or symmetric random matrices $H$ with independent entries, where the distribution of the $(i,j)$ matrix element is given by the probability measure $ν_{ij}$ with zero expectation and with variance $σ_{ij}^2$. We assume that the variances satisfy the normalization condition $\sum_{i} σ^2_{ij} = 1$ for all $j$ and that there is a positive constant $c$ such that $c\le N σ_{ij}^2 \le c^{-1}$. We further assume that the probability distributions $ν_{ij}$ have a uniform subexponential decay. We prove that the Stieltjes transform of the empirical eigenvalue distribution of $H$ is given by the Wigner semicircle law uniformly up to the edges of the spectrum with an error of order $ (N η)^{-1}$ where $η$ is the imaginary part of the spectral parameter in the Stieltjes transform. There are three corollaries to this strong local semicircle law: (1) Rigidity of eigenvalues: If $γ_j =γ_{j,N}$ denotes the {\it classical location} of the $j$-th eigenvalue under the semicircle law ordered in increasing order, then the $j$-th eigenvalue $λ_j$ is close to $γ_j$ in the sense that for any $ξ>1$ there is a constant $L$ such that \[\mathbb P \Big (\exists \, j : \; |λ_j-γ_j| \ge (\log N)^L \Big [ \min \big (\, j, N-j+1 \, \big) \Big ]^{-1/3} N^{-2/3} \Big) \le C\exp{\big[-c(\log N)^ξ \big]} \] for $N$ large enough. (2) The proof of the {\it Dyson's conjecture} \cite{Dy} which states that the time scale of the Dyson Brownian motion to reach local equilibrium is of order $N^{-1}$. (3) The edge universality holds in the sense that the probability distributions of the largest (and the smallest) eigenvalues of two generalized Wigner ensembles are the same in the large $N$ limit provided that the second moments of the two ensembles are identical.

Scott correction for large atoms and molecules in a self-generated magnetic field

We consider a large neutral molecule with total nuclear charge $Z$ in non-relativistic quantum mechanics with a self-generated classical electromagnetic field. To ensure stability, we assume that $Z\al^2\le κ_0$ for a sufficiently small $κ_0$, where $\al$ denotes the fine structure constant. We show that, in the simultaneous limit $Z\to\infty$, $\al\to 0$ such that $κ=Z\al^2$ is fixed, the ground state energy of the system is given by a two term expansion $c_1Z^{7/3} + c_2(κ) Z^2 + o(Z^2)$. The leading term is given by the non-magnetic Thomas-Fermi theory. Our result shows that the magnetic field affects only the second (so-called Scott) term in the expansion.

Second order semiclassics with self-generated magnetic fields

We consider the semiclassical asymptotics of the sum of negative eigenvalues of the three-dimensional Pauli operator with an external potential and a self-generated magnetic field $B$. We also add the field energy $β\int B^2$ and we minimize over all magnetic fields. The parameter $β$ effectively determines the strength of the field. We consider the weak field regime with $βh^{2}\ge {const}>0$, where $h$ is the semiclassical parameter. For smooth potentials we prove that the semiclassical asymptotics of the total energy is given by the non-magnetic Weyl term to leading order with an error bound that is smaller by a factor $h^{1+\e}$, i.e. the subleading term vanishes. However, for potentials with a Coulomb singularity the subleading term does not vanish due to the non-semiclassical effect of the singularity. Combined with a multiscale technique, this refined estimate is used in the companion paper \cite{EFS3} to prove the second order Scott correction to the ground state energy of large atoms and molecules.

Stability and semiclassics in self-generated fields

We consider non-interacting particles subject to a fixed external potential $V$ and a self-generated magnetic field $B$. The total energy includes the field energy $β\int B^2$ and we minimize over all particle states and magnetic fields. In the case of spin-1/2 particles this minimization leads to the coupled Maxwell-Pauli system. The parameter $β$ tunes the coupling strength between the field and the particles and it effectively determines the strength of the field. We investigate the stability and the semiclassical asymptotics, $h\to0$, of the total ground state energy $E(β, h, V)$. The relevant parameter measuring the field strength in the semiclassical limit is $κ=βh$. We are not able to give the exact leading order semiclassical asymptotics uniformly in $κ$ or even for fixed $κ$. We do however give upper and lower bounds on $E$ with almost matching dependence on $κ$. In the simultaneous limit $h\to0$ and $κ\to\infty$ we show that the standard non-magnetic Weyl asymptotics holds. The same result also holds for the spinless case, i.e. where the Pauli operator is replaced by the Schrödinger operator.

Bulk universality for Wigner hermitian matrices with subexponential decay

We consider the ensemble of $n \times n$ Wigner hermitian matrices $H = (h_{\ell k})_{1 \leq \ell,k \leq n}$ that generalize the Gaussian unitary ensemble (GUE). The matrix elements $h_{k\ell} = \bar h_{\ell k}$ are given by $h_{\ell k} = n^{-1/2} (x_{\ell k} + \sqrt{-1} y_{\ell k})$, where $x_{\ell k}, y_{\ell k}$ for $1 \leq \ell < k \leq n$ are i.i.d. random variables with mean zero and variance 1/2, $y_{\ell\ell}=0$ and $x_{\ell \ell}$ have mean zero and variance 1. We assume the distribution of $x_{\ell k}, y_{\ell k}$ to have subexponential decay. In a recent paper, four of the authors recently established that the gap distribution and averaged $k$-point correlation of these matrices were \emph{universal} (and in particular, agreed with those for GUE) assuming additional regularity hypotheses on the $x_{\ell k}, y_{\ell k}$. In another recent paper, the other two authors, using a different method, established the same conclusion assuming instead some moment and support conditions on the $x_{\ell k}, y_{\ell k}$. In this short note we observe that the arguments of these two papers can be combined to establish universality of the gap distribution and averaged $k$-point correlations for all Wigner matrices (with subexponentially decaying entries), with no extra assumptions.

Lecture Notes on Quantum Brownian Motion

Einstein's kinetic theory of the Brownian motion, based upon light water molecules continuously bombarding a heavy pollen, provided an explanation of diffusion from the Newtonian mechanics. Since the discovery of quantum mechanics it has been a challenge to verify the emergence of diffusion from the Schrödinger equation. The first step in this program is to verify the linear Boltzmann equation as a certain scaling limit of a Schrödinger equation with random potential. In the second step, one considers a longer time scale that corresponds to infinitely many Boltzmann collisions. The intuition is that the Boltzmann equation then converges to a diffusive equation similarly to the central limit theorem for Markov processes with sufficient mixing. In these lecture notes (prepared for the Les Houches summer school in 2010 August) we present the mathematical tools to rigorously justify this intuition. The new material relies on joint papers with H.-T. Yau and M. Salmhofer.

Quantum Diffusion and Eigenfunction Delocalization in a Random Band Matrix Model

We consider Hermitian and symmetric random band matrices $H$ in $d \geq 1$ dimensions. The matrix elements $H_{xy}$, indexed by $x,y \in Λ\subset \Z^d$, are independent, uniformly distributed random variables if $\abs{x-y}$ is less than the band width $W$, and zero otherwise. We prove that the time evolution of a quantum particle subject to the Hamiltonian $H$ is diffusive on time scales $t\ll W^{d/3}$. We also show that the localization length of an arbitrarily large majority of the eigenvectors is larger than a factor $W^{d/6}$ times the band width. All results are uniform in the size $\absΛ$ of the matrix.

The local relaxation flow approach to universality of the local statistics for random matrices

We present a generalization of the method of the local relaxation flow to establish the universality of local spectral statistics of a broad class of large random matrices. We show that the local distribution of the eigenvalues coincides with the local statistics of the corresponding Gaussian ensemble provided the distribution of the individual matrix element is smooth and the eigenvalues ${x_j}_{j=1}^N$ are close to their classical location ${γ_j}_{j=1}^N$ determined by the limiting density of eigenvalues. Under the scaling where the typical distance between neighboring eigenvalues is of order 1/N, the necessary apriori estimate on the location of eigenvalues requires only to know that $\E |x_j - γ_j |^2 \le N^{-1-\e}$ on average. This information can be obtained by well established methods for various matrix ensembles. We demonstrate the method by proving local spectral universality for Wishart matrices.

We prove that the eigenvalue spacing statistics in the bulk of the spectrum for these matrices and for GOE are the same in the limit $N \to \infty$. Our approach is based on the study of the Dyson Brownian motion via a related new dynamics, the local relaxation flow.

We consider $N\times N$ symmetric, hermitian or quaternion self-dual random matrices with independent, identically distributed entries (Wigner matrices) where the probability distribution for each matrix element is given by a measure $ν$ with a subexponential decay. Our main result is that the correlation functions of the local eigenvalue statistics in the bulk of the spectrum coincide with those of the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble (GOE), the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE) and the Gaussian Symplectic Ensemble (GSE), respectively, in the limit $N\to \infty$. Our approach is based on the study of the Dyson Brownian motion via a related new dynamics, the local relaxation flow. As a main input, we establish that the density of eigenvalues converges to the Wigner semicircle law and this holds even down to the smallest possible scale, and, moreover, we show that eigenvectors are fully delocalized. These results hold even without the condition that the matrix elements are identically distributed, only independence is used. In fact, we give strong estimates on the matrix elements of the Green function as well that imply that the local statistics of any two ensembles in the bulk are identical if the first four moments of the matrix elements match. Universality at the spectral edges requires matching only two moments. We also prove a Wegner type estimate and that the eigenvalues repel each other on arbitrarily small scales.

Ground state energy of large atoms in a self-generated magnetic field

We consider a large atom with nuclear charge $Z$ described by non-relativistic quantum mechanics with classical or quantized electromagnetic field. We prove that the absolute ground state energy, allowing for minimizing over all possible self-generated electromagnetic fields, is given by the non-magnetic Thomas-Fermi theory to leading order in the simultaneous $Z\to \infty$, $\al\to 0$ limit if $Z\al^2\leq κ$ for some universal $κ$, where $\al$ is the fine structure constant.

Rigorous Derivation of the Gross-Pitaevskii Equation with a Large Interaction Potential

Consider a system of $N$ bosons in three dimensions interacting via a repulsive short range pair potential $N^2V(N(x_i-x_j))$, where $\bx=(x_1, >..., x_N)$ denotes the positions of the particles. Let $H_N$ denote the Hamiltonian of the system and let $ψ_{N,t}$ be the solution to the Schrödinger equation. Suppose that the initial data $ψ_{N,0}$ satisfies the energy condition \[ < ψ_{N,0}, H_N ψ_{N,0} > \leq C N >. \] and that the one-particle density matrix converges to a projection as $N \to \infty$. Then, we prove that the $k$-particle density matrices of $ψ_{N,t}$ factorize in the limit $N \to \infty$. Moreover, the one particle orbital wave function solves the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation, a cubic non-linear Schrödinger equation with the coupling constant proportional to the scattering length of the potential $V$. In \cite{ESY}, we proved the same statement under the condition that the interaction potential $V$ is sufficiently small; in the present work we develop a new approach that requires no restriction on the size of the potential.

Dynamical formation of correlations in a Bose-Einstein condensate

We consider the evolution of $N$ bosons interacting with a repulsive short range pair potential in three dimensions. The potential is scaled according to the Gross-Pitaevskii scaling, i.e. it is given by $N^2V(N(x_i-x_j))$. We monitor the behavior of the solution to the $N$-particle Schrödinger equation in a spatial window where two particles are close to each other. We prove that within this window a short scale interparticle structure emerges dynamically. The local correlation between the particles is given by the two-body zero energy scattering mode. This is the characteristic structure that was expected to form within a very short initial time layer and to persist for all later times, on the basis of the validity of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the evolution of the Bose-Einstein condensate. The zero energy scattering mode emerges after an initial time layer where all higher energy modes disperse out of the spatial window. We can prove the persistence of this structure up to sufficiently small times before three-particle correlations could develop.

Linear Boltzmann equation as the long time dynamics of an electron weakly coupled to a phonon field

We consider the long time evolution of a quantum particle weakly interacting with a phonon field. We show that in the weak coupling limit the Wigner distribution of the electron density matrix converges to the solution of the linear Boltzmann equation globally in time. The collision kernel is identified as the sum of an emission and an absorption term that depend on the equilibrium distribution of the free phonon modes.

The kernel of Dirac operators on $§^3$ and $\R^3$

In this paper we describe an intrinsically geometric way of producing magnetic fields on $§^3$ and $\R^3$ for which the corresponding Dirac operators have a non-trivial kernel. In many cases we are able to compute the dimension of the kernel. In particular we can give examples where the kernel has any given dimension. This generalizes the examples of Loss and Yau (Commun. Math. Phys. 104 (1986) 283-290).
