The Replica Symmetric Formula for the SK Model Revisited

We provide a simple extension of Bolthausen's Morita type proof of the replica symmetric formula [E. Bolthausen, Stat. Mech. of Classical and Disordered Systems, pp. 63-93 (2018)] for the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model and prove the replica symmetry for all $(β,h)$ that satisfy $β^2 E \operatorname{sech}^2(β\sqrt{q}Z+h) \leq 1$, where $q = E\tanh^2(β\sqrt{q}Z+h)$. Compared to [E. Bolthausen, Stat. Mech. of Classical and Disordered Systems, pp. 63-93 (2018)], the key of the argument is to apply the conditional second moment method to a suitably reduced partition function.

High dimensional normality of noisy eigenvectors

We study joint eigenvector distributions for large symmetric matrices in the presence of weak noise. Our main result asserts that every submatrix in the orthogonal matrix of eigenvectors converges to a multidimensional Gaussian distribution. The proof involves analyzing the stochastic eigenstate equation (SEE) which describes the Lie group valued flow of eigenvectors induced by matrix valued Brownian motion. We consider the associated colored eigenvector moment flow defining an SDE on a particle configuration space. This flow extends the eigenvector moment flow first introduced in Bourgade and Yau (2017) to the multicolor setting. However, it is no longer driven by an underlying Markov process on configuration space due to the lack of positivity in the semigroup kernel. Nevertheless, we prove the dynamics admit sufficient averaged decay and contractive properties. This allows us to establish optimal time of relaxation to equilibrium for the colored eigenvector moment flow and prove joint asymptotic normality for eigenvectors. Applications in random matrix theory include the explicit computations of joint eigenvector distributions for general Wigner type matrices and sparse graph models when corresponding eigenvalues lie in the bulk of the spectrum, as well as joint eigenvector distributions for Lévy matrices when the eigenvectors correspond to small energy levels.

The two-dimensional Coulomb plasma: quasi-free approximation and central limit theorem

For the two-dimensional one-component Coulomb plasma, we derive an asymptotic expansion of the free energy up to order $N$, the number of particles of the gas, with an effective error bound $N^{1-κ}$ for some constant $κ> 0$. This expansion is based on approximating the Coulomb gas by a quasi-free Yukawa gas. Further, we prove that the fluctuations of the linear statistics are given by a Gaussian free field at any positive temperature. Our proof of this central limit theorem uses a loop equation for the Coulomb gas, the free energy asymptotics, and rigidity bounds on the local density fluctuations of the Coulomb gas, which we obtained in a previous paper.

Bulk universality for deformed Wigner matrices

We consider $N\times N$ random matrices of the form $H=W+V$ where $W$ is a real symmetric or complex Hermitian Wigner matrix and $V$ is a random or deterministic, real, diagonal matrix whose entries are independent of $W$. We assume subexponential decay for the matrix entries of $W$, and we choose $V$ so that the eigenvalues of $W$ and $V$ are typically of the same order. For a large class of diagonal matrices $V$, we show that the local statistics in the bulk of the spectrum are universal in the limit of large $N$.

Convergence of local statistics of Dyson Brownian motion

We analyze the rate of convergence of the local statistics of Dyson Brownian motion to the GOE/GUE for short times $t=o(1)$ with deterministic initial data V . Our main result states that if the density of states of $V$ is bounded both above and away from $0$ down to scales $\ell \ll t$ in a small interval of size $G \gg t$ around an energy $E_0$, then the local statistics coincide with the GOE/GUE near the energy $E_0$ after time $t$. Our methods are partly based on the idea of coupling two Dyson Brownian motions from [6], the parabolic regularity result of [15], and the eigenvalue rigidity results of [21].

Local Kesten--McKay law for random regular graphs

We study the adjacency matrices of random $d$-regular graphs with large but fixed degree $d$. In the bulk of the spectrum $[-2\sqrt{d-1}+\varepsilon, 2\sqrt{d-1}-\varepsilon]$ down to the optimal spectral scale, we prove that the Green's functions can be approximated by those of certain infinite tree-like (few cycles) graphs that depend only on the local structure of the original graphs. This result implies that the Kesten--McKay law holds for the spectral density down to the smallest scale and the complete delocalization of bulk eigenvectors. Our method is based on estimating the Green's function of the adjacency matrices and a resampling of the boundary edges of large balls in the graphs.

The Eigenvector Moment Flow and local Quantum Unique Ergodicity

We prove that the distribution of eigenvectors of generalized Wigner matrices is universal both in the bulk and at the edge. This includes a probabilistic version of local quantum unique ergodicity and asymptotic normality of the eigenvector entries. The proof relies on analyzing the eigenvector flow under the Dyson Brownian motion. The key new ideas are: (1) the introduction of the eigenvector moment flow, a multi-particle random walk in a random environment, (2) an effective estimate on the regularity of this flow based on maximum principle and (3) optimal finite speed of propagation holds for the eigenvector moment flow with very high probability.

Universality for a class of random band matrices

We prove the universality for the eigenvalue gap statistics in the bulk of the spectrum for band matrices, in the regime where the band width is comparable with the dimension of the matrix, $W\sim N$. All previous results concerning universality of non-Gaussian random matrices are for mean-field models. By relying on a new mean-field reduction technique, we deduce universality from quantum unique ergodicity for band matrices.

Bulk universality of sparse random matrices

We consider the adjacency matrix of the ensemble of Erdős-Rényi random graphs which consists of graphs on $N$ vertices in which each edge occurs independently with probability $p$. We prove that in the regime $pN \gg 1$ these matrices exhibit bulk universality in the sense that both the averaged $n$-point correlation functions and distribution of a single eigenvalue gap coincide with those of the GOE. Our methods extend to a class of random matrices which includes sparse ensembles whose entries have different variances.

Isotropic Local Laws for Sample Covariance and Generalized Wigner Matrices

We consider sample covariance matrices of the form $X^*X$, where $X$ is an $M \times N$ matrix with independent random entries. We prove the isotropic local Marchenko-Pastur law, i.e. we prove that the resolvent $(X^* X - z)^{-1}$ converges to a multiple of the identity in the sense of quadratic forms. More precisely, we establish sharp high-probability bounds on the quantity $\langle v, (X^* X - z)^{-1} w \rangle - \langle v,w\rangle m(z)$, where $m$ is the Stieltjes transform of the Marchenko-Pastur law and $v, w \in \mathbb C^N$. We require the logarithms of the dimensions $M$ and $N$ to be comparable. Our result holds down to scales $Im z \geq N^{-1+ε}$ and throughout the entire spectrum away from 0. We also prove analogous results for generalized Wigner matrices.

On the principal components of sample covariance matrices

We introduce a class of $M \times M$ sample covariance matrices $\mathcal Q$ which subsumes and generalizes several previous models. The associated population covariance matrix $Σ= \mathbb E \cal Q$ is assumed to differ from the identity by a matrix of bounded rank. All quantities except the rank of $Σ- I_M$ may depend on $M$ in an arbitrary fashion. We investigate the principal components, i.e.\ the top eigenvalues and eigenvectors, of $\mathcal Q$. We derive precise large deviation estimates on the generalized components $\langle \mathbf w, \boldsymbol ξ_i \rangle$ of the outlier and non-outlier eigenvectors $\boldsymbol ξ_i$. Our results also hold near the so-called BBP transition, where outliers are created or annihilated, and for degenerate or near-degenerate outliers. We believe the obtained rates of convergence to be optimal. In addition, we derive the asymptotic distribution of the generalized components of the non-outlier eigenvectors. A novel observation arising from our results is that, unlike the eigenvalues, the eigenvectors of the principal components contain information about the \emph{subcritical} spikes of $Σ$. The proofs use several results on the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the uncorrelated matrix $\mathcal Q$, satisfying $\mathbb E \mathcal Q = I_M$, as input: the isotropic local Marchenko-Pastur law established in [9], level repulsion, and quantum unique ergodicity of the eigenvectors. The latter is a special case of a new universality result for the joint eigenvalue-eigenvector distribution.

Edge Universality of Beta Ensembles

We prove the edge universality of the beta ensembles for any $β\ge 1$, provided that the limiting spectrum is supported on a single interval, and the external potential is $\mathscr{C}^4$ and regular. We also prove that the edge universality holds for generalized Wigner matrices for all symmetry classes. Moreover, our results allow us to extend bulk universality for beta ensembles from analytic potentials to potentials in class $\mathscr{C}^4$.

Gap Universality of Generalized Wigner and beta-Ensembles

We consider generalized Wigner ensembles and general beta-ensembles with analytic potentials for any beta larger than 1. The recent universality results in particular assert that the local averages of consecutive eigenvalue gaps in the bulk of the spectrum are universal in the sense that they coincide with those of the corresponding Gaussian beta-ensembles. In this article, we show that local averaging is not necessary for this result, i.e. we prove that the single gap distributions in the bulk are universal.

Averaging Fluctuations in Resolvents of Random Band Matrices

We consider a general class of random matrices whose entries are centred random variables, independent up to a symmetry constraint. We establish precise high-probability bounds on the averages of arbitrary monomials in the resolvent matrix entries. Our results generalize the previous results of [5,16,17] which constituted a key step in the proof of the local semicircle law with optimal error bound in mean-field random matrix models. Our bounds apply to random band matrices, and improve previous estimates from order 2 to order 4 in the cases relevant for applications. In particular, they lead to a proof of the diffusion approximation for the magnitude of the resolvent of random band matrices. This, in turn, implies new delocalization bounds on the eigenvectors. The applications are presented in a separate paper [3].

Delocalization and Diffusion Profile for Random Band Matrices

We consider Hermitian and symmetric random band matrices $H = (h_{xy})$ in $d \geq 1$ dimensions. The matrix entries $h_{xy}$, indexed by $x,y \in (\bZ/L\bZ)^d$, are independent, centred random variables with variances $s_{xy} = \E |h_{xy}|^2$. We assume that $s_{xy}$ is negligible if $|x-y|$ exceeds the band width $W$. In one dimension we prove that the eigenvectors of $H$ are delocalized if $W\gg L^{4/5}$. We also show that the magnitude of the matrix entries $\abs{G_{xy}}^2$ of the resolvent $G=G(z)=(H-z)^{-1}$ is self-averaging and we compute $\E \abs{G_{xy}}^2$. We show that, as $L\to\infty$ and $W\gg L^{4/5}$, the behaviour of $\E |G_{xy}|^2$ is governed by a diffusion operator whose diffusion constant we compute. Similar results are obtained in higher dimensions.

Local Circular Law for Random Matrices

The circular law asserts that the spectral measure of eigenvalues of rescaled random matrices without symmetry assumption converges to the uniform measure on the unit disk. We prove a local version of this law at any point $z$ away from the unit circle. More precisely, if $ | |z| - 1 | \ge τ$ for arbitrarily small $τ> 0$, the circular law is valid around $z$ up to scale $N^{-1/2+ \e}$ for any $\e > 0$ under the assumption that the distributions of the matrix entries satisfy a uniform subexponential decay condition.

Spectral statistics of Erdős-Rényi graphs I: Local semicircle law

We consider the ensemble of adjacency matrices of Erdős-Rényi random graphs, that is, graphs on $N$ vertices where every edge is chosen independently and with probability $p\equiv p(N)$. We rescale the matrix so that its bulk eigenvalues are of order one. We prove that, as long as $pN\to\infty$ (with a speed at least logarithmic in $N$), the density of eigenvalues of the Erdős-Rényi ensemble is given by the Wigner semicircle law for spectral windows of length larger than $N^{-1}$ (up to logarithmic corrections). As a consequence, all eigenvectors are proved to be completely delocalized in the sense that the $\ell^{\infty}$-norms of the $\ell^2$-normalized eigenvectors are at most of order $N^{-1/2}$ with a very high probability. The estimates in this paper will be used in the companion paper [Spectral statistics of Erdős-Rényi graphs II: Eigenvalue spacing and the extreme eigenvalues (2011) Preprint] to prove the universality of eigenvalue distributions both in the bulk and at the spectral edges under the further restriction that $pN\gg N^{2/3}$.

The local circular law II: the edge case

In the first part of this article, we proved a local version of the circular law up to the finest scale $N^{-1/2+ \e}$ for non-Hermitian random matrices at any point $z \in \C$ with $||z| - 1| > c $ for any $c>0$ independent of the size of the matrix. Under the main assumption that the first three moments of the matrix elements match those of a standard Gaussian random variable after proper rescaling, we extend this result to include the edge case $ |z|-1=\oo(1)$. Without the vanishing third moment assumption, we prove that the circular law is valid near the spectral edge $ |z|-1=\oo(1)$ up to scale $N^{-1/4+ \e}$.

The Local Semicircle Law for a General Class of Random Matrices

We consider a general class of $N\times N$ random matrices whose entries $h_{ij}$ are independent up to a symmetry constraint, but not necessarily identically distributed. Our main result is a local semicircle law which improves previous results [14] both in the bulk and at the edge. The error bounds are given in terms of the basic small parameter of the model, $\max_{i,j} \E \abs{h_{ij}}^2$. As a consequence, we prove the universality of the local $n$-point correlation functions in the bulk spectrum for a class of matrices whose entries do not have comparable variances, including random band matrices with band width $W\gg N^{1-\e_n}$ with some $\e_n>0$ and with a negligible mean-field component. In addition, we provide a coherent and pedagogical proof of the local semicircle law, streamlining and strengthening previous arguments from [3,4,16].

A comment on the Wigner-Dyson-Mehta bulk universality conjecture for Wigner matrices

Recently we proved (EPRSY, ERSTVY, ESY4, ESYY, EYY, EYY2, EYYrigi) that the eigenvalue correlation functions of a general class of random matrices converge, weakly with respect to the energy, to the corresponding ones of Gaussian matrices. Tao and Vu \cite{TV5} gave a proof that for the special case of Hermitian Wigner matrices the convergence can be strengthened to vague convergence at any fixed energy in the bulk. In this article we show that this theorem is an immediate corollary of our earlier results. Indeed, a more general form of this theorem also follows directly from our work \cite{EKYY2}.

Bulk Universality of General $β$-Ensembles with Non-convex Potential

We prove the bulk universality of the $β$-ensembles with non-convex regular analytic potentials for any $β>0$. This removes the convexity assumption appeared in our earlier work. The convexity condition enabled us to use the logarithmic Sobolev inequality to estimate events with small probability. The new idea is to introduce a "convexified measure" so that the local statistics are preserved under this convexification.

Spectral Statistics of Erd{\H o}s-Rényi Graphs II: Eigenvalue Spacing and the Extreme Eigenvalues

We consider the ensemble of adjacency matrices of Erd{\H o}s-Rényi random graphs, i.e.\ graphs on $N$ vertices where every edge is chosen independently and with probability $p \equiv p(N)$. We rescale the matrix so that its bulk eigenvalues are of order one. Under the assumption $p N \gg N^{2/3}$, we prove the universality of eigenvalue distributions both in the bulk and at the edge of the spectrum. More precisely, we prove (1) that the eigenvalue spacing of the Erd{\H o}s-Rényi graph in the bulk of the spectrum has the same distribution as that of the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble; and (2) that the second largest eigenvalue of the Erd{\H o}s-Rényi graph has the same distribution as the largest eigenvalue of the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble. As an application of our method, we prove the bulk universality of generalized Wigner matrices under the assumption that the matrix entries have at least $4 + ε$ moments.

Universality of local spectral statistics of random matrices

The Wigner-Gaudin-Mehta-Dyson conjecture asserts that the local eigenvalue statistics of large random matrices exhibit universal behavior depending only on the symmetry class of the matrix ensemble. For invariant matrix models, the eigenvalue distributions are given by a log-gas with inverse temperature $β= 1, 2, 4$, corresponding to the orthogonal, unitary and symplectic ensembles. For $β\not \in \{1, 2, 4\}$, there is no matrix model behind this model, but the statistical physics interpretation of the log-gas is still valid for all $β> 0$. The universality conjecture for invariant ensembles asserts that the local eigenvalue statistics are independent of $V$. In this article, we review our recent solution to the universality conjecture for both invariant and non-invariant ensembles. We will also demonstrate that the local ergodicity of the Dyson Brownian motion is the intrinsic mechanism behind the universality. Furthermore, we review the solution of Dyson's conjecture on the local relaxation time of the Dyson Brownian motion. Related questions such as delocalization of eigenvectors and local version of Wigner's semicircle law will also be discussed.

Bulk universality for generalized Wigner matrices

Consider $N\times N$ Hermitian or symmetric random matrices $H$ where the distribution of the $(i,j)$ matrix element is given by a probability measure $ν_{ij}$ with a subexponential decay. Let $σ_{ij}^2$ be the variance for the probability measure $ν_{ij}$ with the normalization property that $\sum_{i} σ^2_{ij} = 1$ for all $j$. Under essentially the only condition that $c\le N σ_{ij}^2 \le c^{-1}$ for some constant $c>0$, we prove that, in the limit $N \to \infty$, the eigenvalue spacing statistics of $H$ in the bulk of the spectrum coincide with those of the Gaussian unitary or orthogonal ensemble (GUE or GOE). We also show that for band matrices with bandwidth $M$ the local semicircle law holds to the energy scale $M^{-1}$.

Rigidity of Eigenvalues of Generalized Wigner Matrices

Consider $N\times N$ hermitian or symmetric random matrices $H$ with independent entries, where the distribution of the $(i,j)$ matrix element is given by the probability measure $ν_{ij}$ with zero expectation and with variance $σ_{ij}^2$. We assume that the variances satisfy the normalization condition $\sum_{i} σ^2_{ij} = 1$ for all $j$ and that there is a positive constant $c$ such that $c\le N σ_{ij}^2 \le c^{-1}$. We further assume that the probability distributions $ν_{ij}$ have a uniform subexponential decay. We prove that the Stieltjes transform of the empirical eigenvalue distribution of $H$ is given by the Wigner semicircle law uniformly up to the edges of the spectrum with an error of order $ (N η)^{-1}$ where $η$ is the imaginary part of the spectral parameter in the Stieltjes transform. There are three corollaries to this strong local semicircle law: (1) Rigidity of eigenvalues: If $γ_j =γ_{j,N}$ denotes the {\it classical location} of the $j$-th eigenvalue under the semicircle law ordered in increasing order, then the $j$-th eigenvalue $λ_j$ is close to $γ_j$ in the sense that for any $ξ>1$ there is a constant $L$ such that \[\mathbb P \Big (\exists \, j : \; |λ_j-γ_j| \ge (\log N)^L \Big [ \min \big (\, j, N-j+1 \, \big) \Big ]^{-1/3} N^{-2/3} \Big) \le C\exp{\big[-c(\log N)^ξ \big]} \] for $N$ large enough. (2) The proof of the {\it Dyson's conjecture} \cite{Dy} which states that the time scale of the Dyson Brownian motion to reach local equilibrium is of order $N^{-1}$. (3) The edge universality holds in the sense that the probability distributions of the largest (and the smallest) eigenvalues of two generalized Wigner ensembles are the same in the large $N$ limit provided that the second moments of the two ensembles are identical.

Universality for generalized Wigner matrices with Bernoulli distribution

The universality for the eigenvalue spacing statistics of generalized Wigner matrices was established in our previous work \cite{EYY} under certain conditions on the probability distributions of the matrix elements. A major class of probability measures excluded in \cite{EYY} are the Bernoulli measures. In this paper, we extend the universality result of \cite{EYY} to include the Bernoulli measures so that the only restrictions on the probability distributions of the matrix elements are the subexponential decay and the normalization condition that the variances in each row sum up to one. The new ingredient is a strong local semicircle law which improves the error estimate on the Stieltjes transform of the empirical measure of the eigenvalues from the order $(N η)^{-1/2}$ to $(N η)^{-1}$. Here $η$ is the imaginary part of the spectral parameter in the definition of the Stieltjes transform and $N$ is the size of the matrix.

Bulk universality for Wigner hermitian matrices with subexponential decay

We consider the ensemble of $n \times n$ Wigner hermitian matrices $H = (h_{\ell k})_{1 \leq \ell,k \leq n}$ that generalize the Gaussian unitary ensemble (GUE). The matrix elements $h_{k\ell} = \bar h_{\ell k}$ are given by $h_{\ell k} = n^{-1/2} (x_{\ell k} + \sqrt{-1} y_{\ell k})$, where $x_{\ell k}, y_{\ell k}$ for $1 \leq \ell < k \leq n$ are i.i.d. random variables with mean zero and variance 1/2, $y_{\ell\ell}=0$ and $x_{\ell \ell}$ have mean zero and variance 1. We assume the distribution of $x_{\ell k}, y_{\ell k}$ to have subexponential decay. In a recent paper, four of the authors recently established that the gap distribution and averaged $k$-point correlation of these matrices were \emph{universal} (and in particular, agreed with those for GUE) assuming additional regularity hypotheses on the $x_{\ell k}, y_{\ell k}$. In another recent paper, the other two authors, using a different method, established the same conclusion assuming instead some moment and support conditions on the $x_{\ell k}, y_{\ell k}$. In this short note we observe that the arguments of these two papers can be combined to establish universality of the gap distribution and averaged $k$-point correlations for all Wigner matrices (with subexponentially decaying entries), with no extra assumptions.

The local relaxation flow approach to universality of the local statistics for random matrices

We present a generalization of the method of the local relaxation flow to establish the universality of local spectral statistics of a broad class of large random matrices. We show that the local distribution of the eigenvalues coincides with the local statistics of the corresponding Gaussian ensemble provided the distribution of the individual matrix element is smooth and the eigenvalues ${x_j}_{j=1}^N$ are close to their classical location ${γ_j}_{j=1}^N$ determined by the limiting density of eigenvalues. Under the scaling where the typical distance between neighboring eigenvalues is of order 1/N, the necessary apriori estimate on the location of eigenvalues requires only to know that $\E |x_j - γ_j |^2 \le N^{-1-\e}$ on average. This information can be obtained by well established methods for various matrix ensembles. We demonstrate the method by proving local spectral universality for Wishart matrices.

Universality of Random Matrices and Local Relaxation Flow

We consider $N\times N$ symmetric random matrices where the probability distribution for each matrix element is given by a measure $ν$ with a subexponential decay. We prove that the eigenvalue spacing statistics in the bulk of the spectrum for these matrices and for GOE are the same in the limit $N \to \infty$. Our approach is based on the study of the Dyson Brownian motion via a related new dynamics, the local relaxation flow.

Lower bounds on the blow-up rate of the axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations II

Suppose the solution satisfies either $|v (x,t)| \le C_*{|t|^{-1/2}} $ or, for some $\e > 0$, $|v (x,t)| \le C_* r^{-1+ε} |t|^{-ε/2}$ for $-T_0\le t < 0$ and $0<C_*<\infty$ allowed to be large. Rigorous Derivation of the Gross-Pitaevskii Equation with a Large Interaction Potential

Consider a system of $N$ bosons in three dimensions interacting via a repulsive short range pair potential $N^2V(N(x_i-x_j))$, where $\bx=(x_1, >..., x_N)$ denotes the positions of the particles. Let $H_N$ denote the Hamiltonian of the system and let $ψ_{N,t}$ be the solution to the Schrödinger equation. Suppose that the initial data $ψ_{N,0}$ satisfies the energy condition \[ < ψ_{N,0}, H_N ψ_{N,0} > \leq C N >. \] and that the one-particle density matrix converges to a projection as $N \to \infty$. Then, we prove that the $k$-particle density matrices of $ψ_{N,t}$ factorize in the limit $N \to \infty$. Moreover, the one particle orbital wave function solves the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation, a cubic non-linear Schrödinger equation with the coupling constant proportional to the scattering length of the potential $V$. In \cite{ESY}, we proved the same statement under the condition that the interaction potential $V$ is sufficiently small; in the present work we develop a new approach that requires no restriction on the size of the potential.

Consider axisymmetric strong solutions of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in $\R^3$ with non-trivial swirl. Such solutions are not known to be globally defined, but it is shown in \cite{MR673830} that they could only blow up on the axis of symmetry. Let $z$ denote the axis of symmetry and $r$ measure the distance to the z-axis. Suppose the solution satisfies the pointwise scale invariant bound $|v (x,t)| \le C_*{(r^2 -t)^{-1/2}} $ for $-T_0\le t < 0$ and $0<C_*<\infty$ allowed to be large, we then prove that $v$ is regular at time zero.

Stable Directions for Excited States of Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations

We consider nonlinear Schrödinger equations in $\R^3$. Assume that the linear Hamiltonians have two bound states. For certain finite codimension subset in the space of initial data, we construct solutions converging to the excited states in both non-resonant and resonant cases. In the resonant case, the linearized operators around the excited states are non-self adjoint perturbations to some linear Hamiltonians with embedded eigenvalues. Although self-adjoint perturbation turns embedded eigenvalues into resonances, this class of non-self adjoint perturbations turn an embedded eigenvalue into two eigenvalues with the distance to the continuous spectrum given to the leading order by the Fermi golden rule.
