A classification of coadjoint orbits carrying Gibbs ensembles

A coadjoint orbit $O_λ\subseteq {\mathfrak g}^*$ of a Lie group $G$ is said to carry a Gibbs ensemble if the set of all $x \in {\mathfrak g}$, for which the function $α\mapsto e^{-α(x)}$ on the orbit is integrable with respect to the Liouville measure, has non-empty interior $Ω_λ$. We describe a classification of all coadjoint orbits of finite-dimensional Lie algebras with this property. In the context of Souriau's Lie group thermodynamics, the subset $Ω_λ$ is the geometric temperature, a parameter space for a family of Gibbs measures on the coadjoint orbit. The corresponding Fenchel--Legendre transform maps $Ω_λ/{\mathfrak z}({\mathfrak g})$ diffeomorphically onto the interior of the convex hull of the coadjoint orbit $O_λ$. This provides an interesting perspective on the underlying information geometry. We also show that already the integrability of $e^{-α(x)}$ for one $x \in {\mathfrak g}$ implies that $Ω_λ\not=\emptyset$ and that, for general Hamiltonian actions, the existence of Gibbs measures implies that the range of the momentum maps consists of coadjoint orbits $O_λ$ as above.

From Euler elements and 3-gradings to non-compactly causal symmetric spaces

In this article we discuss the interplay between causal structures of symmetric spaces and geometric aspects of Algebraic Quantum Field Theory (AQFT). The central focus is the set of Euler elements in a Lie algebra, i.e., elements whose adjoint action defines a 3-grading. In the first half of this article we survey the classification of reductive causal symmetric spaces from the perspective of Euler elements. This point of view is motivated by recent applications in AQFT. In the second half we obtain several results that prepare the exploration of the deeper connection between the structure of causal symmetric spaces and AQFT. In particular, we explore the technique of strongly orthogonal roots and corresponding systems of sl_2-subalgebras. Furthermore, we exhibit real Matsuki crowns in the adjoint orbits of Euler elements and we describe the group of connected components of the stabilizer group of Euler elements.

Central extensions of Lie groups preserving a differential form

Let $M$ be a manifold with a closed, integral $(k+1)$-form $ω$, and let $G$ be a Fréchet-Lie group acting on $(M,ω)$. As a generalization of the Kostant-Souriau extension for symplectic manifolds, we consider a canonical class of central extensions of $\mathfrak{g}$ by $\mathbb{R}$, indexed by $H^{k-1}(M,\mathbb{R})^*$. We show that the image of $H_{k-1}(M,\mathbb{Z})$ in $H^{k-1}(M,\mathbb{R})^*$ corresponds to a lattice of Lie algebra extensions that integrate to smooth central extensions of $G$ by the circle group $\mathbb{T}$. The idea is to represent a class in $H_{k-1}(M,\mathbb{Z})$ by a weighted submanifold $(S,β)$, where $β$ is a closed, integral form on $S$. We use transgression of differential characters from $S$ and $ M $ to the mapping space $ C^\infty(S, M) $, and apply the Kostant-Souriau construction on $ C^\infty(S, M) $.

Covariant representations for possibly singular actions on C*-algebras

Singular actions on C*-algebras are automorphic group actions on C*-algebras, where the group need not be locally compact, or the action need not be strongly continuous. We study the covariant representation theory of such actions. In the usual case of strongly continuous actions of locally compact groups on C*-algebras, this is done via crossed products, but this approach is not available for singular C*-actions (this was our path in a previous paper). The literature regarding covariant representations for singular actions is already large and scattered, and in need of some consolidation. We collect in this survey a range of results in this field, mostly known. We improve some proofs and elucidate some interconnections. These include existence theorems by Borchers and Halpern, Arveson spectra, the Borchers-Arveson theorem, standard representations and Stinespring dilations as well as ground states, KMS states and ergodic states and the spatial structure of their GNS representations.

Crossed products of C^*-algebras for singular actions with spectrum conditions

We analyze existence of crossed product constructions of Lie group actions on C^*-algebras which are singular. These are actions where the group need not be locally compact, or the action need not be strongly continuous. In particular, we consider the case where spectrum conditions are required for the implementing unitary group in covariant representations of such actions. The existence of a crossed product construction is guaranteed by the existence of "cross representations". For one-parameter automorphism groups, we prove that the existence of cross representations is stable with respect to a large set of perturbations of the action, and we fully analyze the structure of cross representations of inner actions on von Neumann algebras. For one-parameter automorphism groups we study the cross property for covariant representations, where the generator of the implementing unitary group is positive. In particular, we find that if the Borchers-Arveson minimal implementing group is cross, then so are all other implementing groups. For higher dimensional Lie group actions, we consider a class of spectral conditions which include the ones occurring in physics, and is sensible also for non-abelian or for infinite dimensional Lie groups. We prove that the cross property of a covariant representation is fully determined by the cross property of a certain one-parameter subsystem. This greatly simplifies the analysis of the existence of cross representations, and it allows us to prove the cross property for several examples of interest to physics. We also consider non-abelian extensions of the Borchers-Arveson theorem. There is a full extension in the presence of a cyclic invariant vector, but otherwise one needs to determine the vanishing of lifting obstructions.

Nets of standard subspaces on Lie groups

Let G be a Lie group with Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, $h \in \frak{g}$ an element for which the derivation ad(h) defines a 3-grading of $\mathfrak{g}$ and $τ_G$ an involutive automorphism of G inducing on $\mathfrak{g}$ the involution $e^{πi ad(h)}$. We consider antiunitary representations $U$ of the Lie group $G_τ= G \rtimes \{e,τ_G\}$ for which the positive cone $C_U = \{ x \in \mathfrak{g} : -i \partial U(x) \geq 0\}$ and $h$ span $\mathfrak{g}$. To a real subspace E of distribution vectors invariant under $exp(\mathbb{R} h)$ and an open subset $O \subseteq G$, we associate the real subspace $H_E(O) \subseteq H$, generated by the subspaces $U(φ)E$, where $φ\in C^\infty_c(O,\mathbb{R})$ is a real-valued test function on $O$. Then $H_E(O)$ is dense in $H_E(G)$ for every non-empty open subset $O \subseteq G$ (Reeh--Schlider property). For the real standard subspace $V \subseteq H$, for which $J_V = U(τ_G)$ is the modular conjugation and $Δ_V^{-it/2π} = U(\exp th)$ is the modular group, we obtain sufficient conditions to be of the form $H_E(S)$ for an open subsemigroup $S \subseteq G$. If $\mathfrak{g}$ is semisimple with simple hermitian ideals of tube type, we verify these criteria and obtain nets of cyclic subspacs $H_E(O)$, $O \subseteq G$, satisfying the Bisognano--Wichman property for some domains O. Our construction also yields such nets on simple Jordan space-times and compactly causal symmetric spaces of Cayley type. By second quantization, these nets lead to free quantum fields in the sense of Haag--Kastler on causal homogeneous spaces whose groups are generated by modular groups and conjugations.

Polynomial representations of $C^*$-algebras and their applications

This is a sequel to our paper on nonlinear completely positive maps and dilation theory for real involutive algebras, where we have reduced all representation classification problems to the passage from a $C^*$-algebra ${\mathcal A}$ to its symmetric powers $S^n({\mathcal A})$, resp., to holomorphic representations of the multiplicative $*$-semigroup $({\mathcal A},\cdot)$. Here we study the correspondence between representations of ${\mathcal A}$ and of $S^n({\mathcal A})$ in detail. As $S^n({\mathcal A})$ is the fixed point algebra for the natural action of the symmetric group $S_n$ on ${\mathcal A}^{\otimes n}$, this is done by relating representations of $S^n({\mathcal A})$ to those of the crossed product ${\mathcal A}^{\otimes n} \rtimes S_n$ in which it is a hereditary subalgebra. For $C^*$-algebras of type I, we obtain a rather complete description of the equivalence classes of the irreducible representations of $S^n({\mathcal A})$ and we relate this to the Schur--Weyl theory for $C^*$-algebras. Finally we show that if ${\mathcal A}\subseteq B({\mathcal H})$ is a factor of type II or III, then its corresponding multiplicative representation on ${\mathcal H}^{\otimes n}$ is a factor representation of the same type, unlike the classical case ${\mathcal A}=B({\mathcal H})$.

Reflection Positive Stochastic Processes Indexed by Lie Groups

Reflection positivity originates from one of the Osterwalder-Schrader axioms for constructive quantum field theory. It serves as a bridge between euclidean and relativistic quantum field theory. In mathematics, more specifically, in representation theory, it is related to the Cartan duality of symmetric Lie groups (Lie groups with an involution) and results in a transformation of a unitary representation of a symmetric Lie group to a unitary representation of its Cartan dual. In this article we continue our investigation of representation theoretic aspects of reflection positivity by discussing reflection positive Markov processes indexed by Lie groups, measures on path spaces, and invariant gaussian measures in spaces of distribution vectors. This provides new constructions of reflection positive unitary representations.

$C^*$-algebras and direct integral decomposition for Lie supergroups

For every finite dimensional Lie supergroup $(G,\mathfrak g)$, we define a $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal A:=\mathcal A(G,\mathfrak g)$, and show that there exists a canonical bijective correspondence between unitary representations of $(G,\mathfrak g)$ and nondegenerate $*$-representations of $\mathcal A$. The proof of existence of such a correspondence relies on a subtle characterization of smoothing operators of unitary representations. For a broad class of Lie supergroups, which includes nilpotent as well as classical simple ones, we prove that the associated $C^*$-algebra is CCR. In particular, we obtain the uniqueness of direct integral decomposition for unitary representations of these Lie supergroups.

Bounded and Semi-bounded Representations of Infinite Dimensional Lie Groups

In this note we describe the recent progress in the classification of bounded and semibounded representations of infinite dimensional Lie groups. We start with a discussion of the semiboundedness condition and how the new concept of a smoothing operator can be used to construct $C^*$-algebras (so called host algebras) whose representations are in one-to-one correspondence with certain semibounded representations of an infinite dimensional Lie group $G$. This makes the full power of $C^*$-theory available in this context. Then we discuss the classification of bounded representations of several types of unitary groups on Hilbert spaces and of gauge groups. After explaining the method of holomorphic induction as a means to pass from bounded representations to semibounded ones, we describe the classification of semibounded representations for hermitian Lie groups of operators, loop groups (with infinite dimensional targets), the Virasoro group and certain infinite dimensional oscillator groups.

Finite dimensional compact and unitary Lie superalgebras

Motivated by the theory of unitary representations of finite dimensional Lie supergroups, we describe those Lie superalgebras which have a faithful finite dimensional unitary representation. We call these Lie superalgebras unitary. This is achieved by describing the classification of real finite dimensional compact simple Lie superalgebras, and analyzing, in a rather elementary and direct way, the decomposition of reductive Lie superalgebras ($\g$ is a semisimple $\g_{\bar 0}$-module) over fields of characteristic zero into ideals.

Isomorphisms of twisted Hilbert loop algebras

The closest infinite dimensional relatives of compact Lie algebras are Hilbert-Lie algebras, i.e. real Hilbert spaces with a Lie algebra structure for which the scalar product is invariant. Locally affine Lie algebras (LALAs) correspond to double extensions of (twisted) loop algebras over simple Hilbert-Lie algebras $\mathfrak{k}$, also called affinisations of $\mathfrak{k}$. They possess a root space decomposition whose corresponding root system is a locally affine root system of one of the $7$ families $A_J^{(1)}$, $B_J^{(1)}$, $C_J^{(1)}$, $D_J^{(1)}$, $B_J^{(2)}$, $C_J^{(2)}$ and $BC_J^{(2)}$ for some infinite set $J$. To each of these types corresponds a "minimal" affinisation of some simple Hilbert-Lie algebra $\mathfrak{k}$, which we call standard. In this paper, we give for each affinisation $\mathfrak{g}$ of a simple Hilbert-Lie algebra $\mathfrak{k}$ an explicit isomorphism from $\mathfrak{g}$ to one of the standard affinisations of $\mathfrak{k}$. The existence of such an isomorphism could also be derived from the classification of locally affine root systems, but for representation theoretic purposes it is crucial to obtain it explicitely as a deformation between two twists which is compatible with the root decompositions. We illustrate this by applying our isomorphism theorem to the study of positive energy highest weight representations of $\mathfrak{g}$. In subsequent work, the present paper will be used to obtain a complete classification of the positive energy highest weight representations of affinisations of $\mathfrak{k}$.

Kaehler Geometry, Momentum Maps and Convex Sets

These notes grew out of an expose on M. Gromov's paper "Convex sets and Kähler manifolds'' ("Advances in Differential Geometry and Topology,'' World Scientific, 1990) at the DMV-Seminar on "Combinatorical Convex Geometry and Toric Varieties'' in Blaubeuren in April `93. Gromov's paper deals with a proof of Alexandrov--Fenchel type inequalities and the Brunn--Minkowski inequality for finite dimensional compact convex sets and their variants for compact Kähler manifolds. The emphasis of these notes lies on basic details and the techniques from various mathematical areas involved in Gromov's arguments.

On the characterization of trace class representations and Schwartz operators

In this note we collect several characterizations of unitary representations $(π, \mathcal{H})$ of a finite dimensional Lie group $G$ which are trace class, i.e., for each compactly supported smooth function $f$ on $G$, the operator $π(f)$ is trace class. In particular we derive the new result that, for some $m \in \mathbb{N}$, all operators $π(f)$, $f \in C^m_c(G)$, are trace class. As a consequence the corresponding distribution character $θ_π$ is of finite order. We further show $π$ is trace class if and only if every operator $A$, which is smoothing in the sense that $A\mathcal{H}\subseteq \mathcal{H}^\infty$, is trace class and that this in turn is equivalent to the Fréchet space $\mathcal{H}^\infty$ being nuclear, which in turn is equivalent to the realizability of the Gaussian measure of $\mathcal{H}$ on the space $\mathcal{H}^{-\infty}$ of distribution vectors. Finally we show that, even for infinite dimensional Fréchet-Lie groups, $A$ and $A^*$ are smoothing if and only if $A$ is a Schwartz operator, i.e., all products of $A$ with operators from the derived representation are bounded.

Positive energy representations for locally finite split Lie algebras

Let $\mathfrak g$ be a locally finite split simple complex Lie algebra of type $A_J$, $B_J$, $C_J$ or $D_J$ and $\mathfrak h \subseteq \mathfrak g$ be a splitting Cartan subalgebra. Fix $D \in \mathrm{der}(\mathfrak g)$ with $\mathfrak h \subseteq \ker D$ (a diagonal derivation). Then every unitary highest weight representation $(ρ_λ, V^λ)$ of $\mathfrak g$ extends to a representation $\tildeρ_λ$ of the semidirect product $\mathfrak g \rtimes \mathbb C D$ and we say that $\tildeρ_λ$ is a positive energy representation if the spectrum of $-i\tildeρ_λ(D)$ is bounded from below. In the present note we characterise all pairs $(λ,D)$ with $λ$ bounded for which this is the case. If $U_1(\mathcal H)$ is the unitary group of Schatten class $1$ on an infinite dimensional real, complex or quaternionic Hilbert space and $λ$ is bounded, then we accordingly obtain a characterisation of those highest weight representations $π_λ$ satisfying the positive energy condition with respect to the continuous $\mathbb R$-action induced by $D$. In this context the representation $π_λ$ is norm continuous and our results imply the remarkable result that, for positive energy representations, adding a suitable inner derivation to $D$, we can achieve that the minimal eigenvalue of $\tildeρ_λ(D)$ is $0$ (minimal energy condition). The corresponding pairs $(λ,D)$ satisfying the minimal energy condition are rather easy to describe explicitly.

Towards a Lie theory for locally convex groups

In this survey, we report on the state of the art of some of the fundamental problems in the Lie theory of Lie groups modeled on locally convex spaces, such as integrability of Lie algebras, integrability of Lie subalgebras to Lie subgroups, and integrability of Lie algebra extensions to Lie group extensions. We further describe how regularity or local exponentiality of a Lie group can be used to obtain quite satisfying answers to some of the fundamental problems. These results are illustrated by specialization to some specific classes of Lie groups, such as direct limit groups, linear Lie groups, groups of smooth maps and groups of diffeomorphisms.

Integrability of unitary representations on reproducing kernel spaces

Let g be a Banach Lie algebra and τ: g ---> g an involution. Write g=h+q for the eigenspace decomposition of g with respect to τand g^c := h+iq for the dual Lie algebra. In this article we show the integrability of two types of infinitesimally unitary representations of g^c. The first class of representation is determined by a smooth positive definite kernel K on a locally convex manifold M. The kernel is assumed to satisfying a natural invariance condition with respect to an infinitesimal action β: g \to V(M) by locally integrable vector fields that is compatible with a smooth action of a connected Lie group $H$ with Lie algebra h. The second class is constructed from a positive definite kernel corresponding to a positive definite distribution K \in C^{-\infty}(M \times M) on a finite dimensional smooth manifold M which satisfies a similar invariance condition with respect to a homomorphism β: g \to V(M). As a consequence, we get a generalization of the Luscher--Mack Theorem which applies to a class of semigroups that need not have a polar decomposition. Our integrability results also apply naturally to local representations and representations arising in the context of reflection positivity.

Nonlinear completely positive maps and dilation theory for real involutive algebras

A real seminormed involutive algebra is a real associative algebra ${\mathcal A}$ endowed with an involutive antiautomorphism $*$ and a submultiplicative seminorm $p$ with $p(a^*) =p(a)$ for $a\in {\mathcal A}$. Then ${\mathop{\tt ball}\nolimits}({\mathcal A},p) := \{a \in {\mathcal A} \colon p(a) < 1\}$ is an involutive subsemigroup. For the case where ${\mathcal A}$ is unital, our main result asserts that a function $ϕ\colon{\mathop{\tt ball}\nolimits}({\mathcal A},p) \to B(V)$, $V$ a Hilbert space, is completely positive (defined suitably) if and only if it is positive definite and analytic for any locally convex topology for which ${\mathop{\tt ball}\nolimits}({\mathcal A},p)$ is open. If $η_{\mathcal A} \colon {\mathcal A} \to C^*({\mathcal A},p)$ is the enveloping $C^*$-algebra of $({\mathcal A},p)$ and $e^{C^*({\mathcal A},p)}$ is the $c_0$-direct sum of the symmetric tensor powers $S^n(C^*({\mathcal A},p))$, then the above two properties are equivalent to the existence of a factorization $ϕ= Φ\circ Γ$, where $Φ\colon e^{C^*({\mathcal A},p)} \to B(V)$ is linear completely positive and $Γ(a) = \sum_{n = 0}^\infty η_{\mathcal A}(a)^{\otimes n}$. We also obtain a suitable generalization to non-unital algebras. An important consequence of this result is a description of the unitary representations of ${\rm U}({\mathcal A})$ with bounded analytic extensions to ${\mathop{\tt ball}\nolimits}({\mathcal A},p)$ in terms of representations of the $C^*$-algebra $e^{C^*({\mathcal A},p)}$.

On an invariance property of the space of smooth vectors

Let $(π, \mathcal H)$ be a continuous unitary representation of the (infinite dimensional) Lie group $G$ and $γ\: \mathbb R \to \mathrm{Aut}(G)$ define a continuous action of $\mathbb R$ on $G$. Suppose that $π^\#(g,t) = π(g) U_t$ defines a continuous unitary representation of the semidirect product group $G \rtimes_γ\mathbb R$. The first main theorem of the present note provides criteria for the invariance of the space $\mathcal H^\infty$ of smooth vectors of $π$ under the operators $U_f = \int_\mathbb R f(t)U_t\, dt$ for $f \in L^1(\mathbb R)$, resp., $f \in \mathcal S(\mathbb R)$. Using this theorem we show that, for suitably defined spectral subspaces $\mathfrak g_{\mathbb C}(E)$, $E \subseteq \mathbb R$, in the complexified Lie algebra $\mathfrak g_{\mathbb C}$, and $\mathcal H^\infty(F)$, $F\subseteq \mathbb R$, for $U$ in $\mathcal H^\infty$, we have \[ \mathsf{d}π(\mathfrak g_{\mathbb C}(E)) \mathcal H^\infty(F) \subseteq \mathcal H^\infty(E + F).\]

Reflection positive one-parameter groups and dilations

The concept of reflection positivity has its origins in the work of Osterwalder--Schrader on constructive quantum field theory. It is a fundamental tool to construct a relativistic quantum field theory as a unitary representation of the Poincare group from a non-relativistic field theory as a representation of the euclidean motion group. This is the second article in a series on the mathematical foundations of reflection positivity. We develop the theory of reflection positive one-parameter groups and the dual theory of dilations of contractive hermitian semigroups. In particular, we connect reflection positivity with the outgoing realization of unitary one-parameter groups by Lax and Phillips. We further show that our results provide effective tools to construct reflection positive representations of general symmetric Lie groups, including the ax+b-group, the Heisenberg group, the euclidean motion group and the euclidean conformal group.

Reflection positivity for the circle group

In this note we characterize those unitary one-parameter groups U^c which admit euclidean realizations in the sense that they are obtained by the analytic continuation process corresponding to reflection positivity from a unitary representation $U$ of the circle group. These are precisely the ones for which there exists an anti-unitary involution $J$ commuting with $U^c$. This provides an interesting link with the modular data arising in Tomita--Takesaki theory. Introducing the concept of a positive definite function with values in the space of sesquilinear forms, we further establish a link between KMS states and reflection positivity on the circle.

Reflection Positivity and Conformal Symmetry

The concept of reflection positivity has its origins in the work of Osterwalder--Schrader on constructive quantum field theory and duality between unitary representations of the euclidean motion group and the Poincare group. On the mathematical side this duality can be made precise as follows. If $\g$ is a Lie algebra with an involutive automorphism $τ$. Decompose $\g = \fh \oplus \fq = \ker(τ- \1) \oplus \ker(τ+ \1)$ into $τ$-eigenspaces and let $\g^c := \fh \oplus i \fq$. At the core of the notion of reflection positivity is the idea that this duality can sometimes be implemented on the level of unitary representations. The idea is simple on the Lie algebra level: Let $(π,\cH^0)$ be a representation of $\g$ where $π$ acts by skew-symmetric operators. Assume that there exists a unitary operator $J$ of order two such that $J πJ = π\circ τ$ and a $\g$-invariant subspace $\cK^0$ which is {\it $J$-positive}. Then complex linear extension leads to a representation of $\g^c$ on $\cK^0$ by operators which are skew-symmetric with respect to $h_J$, so that we obtain a "unitary" representation of $\g^c$ on the pre-Hilbert space $\cK_J^0 := \cK_J/{v \: \cK^0 \: h_J(v,v)=0}$. The aim of this article is twofold. First we discuss reflection positivity in an abstract setting using {\it reflection positive distributions} on the Lie group $G_τ=G\rtimes {1,τ}$ and {\it reflection positive distribution vectors} of a unitary representation of $G_τ$. Then we apply these ideas to the conformal group $\OO_{1,n+1}^+(\R)$ of the sphere $\bS^n$ as well as the the half-space picture mostly used in physics.

Unitary Representations of Unitary Groups

In this paper we review and streamline some results of Kirillov, Olshanski and Pickrell on unitary representations of the unitary group $\U(\cH)$ of a real, complex or quaternionic separable Hilbert space and the subgroup $\U_\infty(\cH)$, consisting of those unitary operators $g$ for which $g - \1$ is compact. The Kirillov--Olshanski theorem on the continuous unitary representations of the identity component $\U_\infty(\cH)_0$ asserts that they are direct sums of irreducible ones which can be realized in finite tensor products of a suitable complex Hilbert space. This is proved and generalized to inseparable spaces. These results are carried over to the full unitary group by Pickrell's Theorem, asserting that the separable unitary representations of $\U(\cH)$, for a separable Hilbert space $\cH$, are uniquely determined by their restriction to $\U_\infty(\cH)_0$. For the $10$ classical infinite rank symmetric pairs $(G,K)$ of non-unitary type, such as $(\GL(\cH),\U(\cH))$, we also show that all separable unitary representations are trivial.

Crossed products of C*-algebras for singular actions

We consider group actions of topological groups on C*-algebras of the types which occur in many physics models. These are singular actions in the sense that they need not be strongly continuous, or the group need not be locally compact. We develop a "crossed product host" in analogy to the usual crossed product for strongly continuous actions of locally compact groups, in the sense that its representation theory is in a natural bijection with the covariant representation theory of the action. We prove a uniqueness theorem for crossed product hosts, and analyze existence conditions. We also present a number of examples where a crossed product host exists, but the usual crossed product does not. For actions where a crossed product host does not exist, we obtain a "maximal" invariant subalgebra for which a crossed product host exists. We further study the case of a discontinuous action of a locally compact group in detail.

Differentiable vectors and unitary representations of Frechet-Lie supergroups

For a locally convex Lie group with the Trotter property, we prove that the space of k-times differentiable vectors of a unitary representation is equal to the intersection of domains of k-fold products of the Lie algebra action. The result also holds for continuous representations of locally exponential groups on metrizable locally convex spaces. As an application, we extend a key stability theorem in the representation theory of Lie supergroups beyond the Banach case.

Making Lifting Obstructions Explicit

If P \to X is a topological principal K-bundle and \hat K a central extension of K by Z, then there is a natural obstruction class δ_1(P) in \check H^2(X,\uline Z) in sheaf cohomology whose vanishing is equivalent to the existence of a \hat K-bundle \hat P over X with P \cong \hat P/Z. In this paper we establish a link between homotopy theoretic data and the obstruction class δ_1(P) which in many cases can be used to calculate this class in explicit terms. Writing \partial_d^P \: π_d(X) \to π_{d-1}(K) for the connecting maps in the long exact homotopy sequence, two of our main results can be formulated as follows. If Z is a quotient of a contractible group by the discrete group Γ, then the homomorphism π_3(X) \to Γinduced by δ_1(P) \in \check H^2(X,\uline Z) \cong H^3_{\rm sing}(X,Γ) coincides with \partial_2^{\hat K} \circ \partial_3^P and if Z is discrete, then δ_1(P) \in \check H^2(X,\uline Z) induces the homomorphism -\partial_1^{\hat K} \circ \partial_2^P \: π_2(X) \to Z. We also obtain some information on obstruction classes defining trivial homomorphisms on homotopy groups.

On convex hulls of orbits of Coxeter groups and Weyl groups

The notion of a linear Coxeter system introduced by Vinberg generalizes the geometric representation of a Coxeter group. Our main theorem asserts that if $v$ is an element of the Tits cone of a linear Coxeter system and $\cW$ is the corresponding Coxeter group, then $\cW v \subeq v - C_v,$ where $C_v$ is the convex cone generated by the coroots $\check α$, for which $α(v) > 0$. This implies that the convex hull of $\cW v$ is completely determined by the image of $v$ under the reflections in $\cW$. We also apply an analogous result for convex hulls of $\cW$-orbits in the dual space, although this action need not correspond to a linear Coxeter system. Motivated by the applications in representation theory, we further extend these results to Weyl group orbits of locally finite and locally affine root systems. In the locally affine case, we also derive some applications on minimizing linear functionals on Weyl group orbits.

Positive energy representations and continuity of projective representations for general topological groups

Let $G$ and $T$ be topological groups, $α: T \to \Aut(G)$ a homomorphism defining a continuous action of $T$ on $G$ and $G^\sharp := G \rtimes_αT$ the corresponding semidirect product group. In this paper we address several issues concerning irreducible continuous unitary representations $(π^\sharp, \cH)$ of $G^\sharp$ whose restriction to $G$ remains irreducible. First we prove that, for $T = \R$, this is the case for any irreducible positive energy representation of $G^\sharp$, i.e., for which the one-parameter group $U_t := π^\sharp(\1,t)$ has non-negative spectrum. The passage from irreducible unitary representations of $G$ to representations of $G^\sharp$ requires that certain projective unitary representations are continuous. To facilitate this verification, we derive various effective criteria for the continuity of projective unitary representations. Based on results on Borchers for $W^*$-dynamical systems, we also derive a characterization of the continuous positive definite functions on $G$ that extend to a $G^\sharp$.

Semibounded Unitary Representations of Double Extensions of Hilbert--Loop Groups

A unitary representation of a, possibly infinite dimensional, Lie group $G$ is called semibounded if the corresponding operators $i\ddπ(x)$ from the derived representation are uniformly bounded from above on some non-empty open subset of the Lie algebra $\g$ of $G$. We classify all irreducible semibounded representations of the groups $\hat\cL_ϕ(K)$ which are double extensions of the twisted loop group $\cL_ϕ(K)$, where $K$ is a simple Hilbert--Lie group (in the sense that the scalar product on its Lie algebra is invariant) and $ϕ$ is a finite order automorphism of $K$ which leads to one of the 7 irreducible locally affine root systems with their canonical $\Z$-grading. To achieve this goal, we extend the method of holomorphic induction to certain classes of Fréchet-Lie groups and prove an infinitesimal characterization of analytic operator-valued positive definite functions on Fréchet--BCH--Lie groups.

Analytic extension techniques for unitary representations of Banach-Lie groups

Let $(G,θ)$ be a Banach--Lie group with involutive automorphism $θ$, $\g = \fh \oplus \fq$ be the $θ$-eigenspaces in the Lie algebra $\g$ of $G$, and $H = (G^θ)_0$ be the identity component of its group of fixed points. An Olshanski semigroup is a semigroup $S \subeq G$ of the form $S = H \exp(W)$, where $W$ is an open $\Ad(H)$-invariant convex cone in $\fq$ and the polar map $H \times W \to S, (h,x) \mapsto h \exp x$ is a diffeomorphism. Any such semigroup carries an involution * satisfying $(h\exp x)^* = (\exp x) h^{-1}$. Our central result, generalizing the Lüscher--Mack Theorem for finite dimensional groups, asserts that any locally bounded *-representation $π\: S \to B(\cH)$ with a dense set of smooth vectors defines by "analytic continuation" a unitary representation of the simply connected Lie group $G_c$ with Lie algebra $ \g_c = \fh + i \fq$. We also characterize those unitary representations of $G_c$ obtained by this construction. With similar methods, we further show that semibounded unitary representations extend to holomorphic representations of complex Olshanski semigroups

Categories of unitary representations of Banach-Lie supergroups and restriction functors

We prove that the categories of smooth and analytic unitary representations of Banach--Lie supergroups are well-behaved under restriction functors, in the sense that the restriction of a representation to an integral subsupergroup is well-defined. We also prove that the category of analytic representations is isomorphic to a subcategory of the category of smooth representations. These facts are needed as a crucial first step to a rigorous treatment of the analytic theory of unitary representations of Banach--Lie supergroups. They extend the known results for finite dimensional Lie supergroups. In the infinite dimensional case the proofs require several new ideas. As an application, we give an analytic realization of the oscillator representation of the restricted orthosymplectic Banach--Lie supergroup.

Oscillator algebras with semi-equicontinuous coadjoint orbits

A unitary representation of a, possibly infinite dimensional, Lie group G is called semi-bounded if the corresponding operators idπ(x) from the derived representations are uniformly bounded from above on some non-empty open subset of the Lie algebra g. Not every Lie group has non-trivial semibounded unitary representations, so that it becomes an important issue to decide when this is the case. In the present paper we describe a complete solution of this problem for the class of generalized oscillator groups, which are semidirect products of Heisenberg groups with a one-parameter group γ. For these groups it turns out that the existence of non-trivial semibounded representations is equivalent to the existence of so-called semi-equicontinuous non-trivial coadjoint orbits, a purely geometric condition on the coadjoint action. This in turn can be expressed by a positivity condition on the Hamiltonian function corresponding to the infinitesimal generator D of γ. A central point of our investigations is that we make no assumption on the structure of the spectrum of D. In particular, D can be any skew-adjoint operator on a Hilbert space.

Schur--Weyl Theory for $C^*$-algebras

To each irreducible infinite dimensional representation $(π,\cH)$ of a $C^*$-algebra $\cA$, we associate a collection of irreducible norm-continuous unitary representations $π_λ^\cA$ of its unitary group $\U(\cA)$, whose equivalence classes are parameterized by highest weights in the same way as the irreducible bounded unitary representations of the group $\U_\infty(\cH) = \U(\cH) \cap (\1 + K(\cH))$ are. These are precisely the representations arising in the decomposition of the tensor products $\cH^{\otimes n} \otimes (\cH^*)^{\otimes m}$ under $\U(\cA)$. We show that these representations can be realized by sections of holomorphic line bundles over homogeneous Kähler manifolds on which $\U(\cA)$ acts transitively and that the corresponding norm-closed momentum sets $I_{π_λ^\cA}^{\bf n} \subeq \fu(\cA)'$ distinguish inequivalent representations of this type.

Semibounded representations of hermitian Lie groups

A unitary representation of a, possibly infinite dimensional, Lie group $G$ is called semibounded if the corresponding operators $i\ddπ(x)$ from the derived representation are uniformly bounded from above on some non-empty open subset of the Lie algebra $\g$ of $G$. A hermitian Lie group is a central extension of the identity component of the automorphism group of a hermitian Hilbert symmetric space. In the present paper we classify the irreducible semibounded unitary representations of hermitian Lie groups corresponding to infinite dimensional irreducible symmetric spaces. These groups come in three essentially different types: those corresponding to negatively curved spaces (the symmetric Hilbert domains), the unitary groups acting on the duals of Hilbert domains, such as the restricted Graßmannian, and the motion groups of flat spaces.

Holomorphic Realization of Unitary Representations of Banach--Lie Groups

In this paper we explore the method of holomorphic induction for unitary representations of Banach--Lie groups. First we show that the classification of complex bundle structures on homogeneous Banach bundles over complex homogeneous spaces of real Banach--Lie groups formally looks as in the finite dimensional case. We then turn to a suitable concept of holomorphic unitary induction and show that this process preserves commutants. In particular, holomorphic induction from irreducible representations leads to irreducible ones. Finally we develop criteria to identify representations as holomorphically induced ones and apply these to the class of so-called positive energy representations. All this is based on extensions of Arveson's concept of spectral subspaces to representations on Fréchet spaces, in particular on spaces of smooth vectors.

Infinite Tensor Products of C_0(R): Towards a Group Algebra for R^\infty

The construction of an infinite tensor product of the C*-algebra C_0(R) is not obvious, because it is nonunital, and it has no nonzero projection. Based on a choice of an approximate identity, we construct here an infinite tensor product of C_0(R), denoted L_V. We use this to construct (partial) group algebras for the full continuous unitary representation theory of the group R^(N) = the infinite sequences with real entries, of which only finitely many entries are nonzero. We obtain an interpretation of the Bochner-Minlos theorem in R^(N) as the pure state space decomposition of the partial group algebras which generate L_V. We analyze the representation theory of L_V, and show that there is a bijection between a natural set of representations of L_V and the continuous unitary representations of R^(N), but that there is an extra part which essentially consists of the representation theory of a multiplicative semigroup which depends on the initial choice of approximate identity.

Localization via Automorphisms of the CARs. Local gauge invariance

The classical matter fields are sections of a vector bundle E with base manifold M. The space L^2(E) of square integrable matter fields w.r.t. a locally Lebesgue measure on M, has an important module action of C_b^\infty(M) on it. This module action defines restriction maps and encodes the local structure of the classical fields. For the quantum context, we show that this module action defines an automorphism group on the algebra A, of the canonical anticommutation relations on L^2(E), with which we can perform the analogous localization. That is, the net structure of the CAR, A, w.r.t. appropriate subsets of M can be obtained simply from the invariance algebras of appropriate subgroups. We also identify the quantum analogues of restriction maps. As a corollary, we prove a well-known "folk theorem," that the algebra A contains only trivial gauge invariant observables w.r.t. a local gauge group acting on E.

On Analytic Vectors for Unitary Representations of Infinite Dimensional Lie Groups

Let $G$ be a 1-connected Banach-Lie group or, more generally, a BCH--Lie group. On the complex enveloping algebra $U_\C(\g)$ of its Lie algebra $\g$ we define the concept of an analytic functional and show that every positive analytic functional $λ$ is integrable in the sense that it is of the form $λ(D) = \la \ddπ(D)v, v\ra$ for an analytic vector $v$ of a unitary representation of $G$. On the way to this result we derive criteria for the integrability of *-representations of infinite dimensional Lie algebras of unbounded operators to unitary group representations. For the matrix coefficient $π^{v,v}(g) = \la π(g)v,v\ra$ of a vector $v$ in a unitary representation of an analytic Fréchet-Lie group $G$ we show that $v$ is an analytic vector if and only if $π^{v,v}$ is analytic in an identity neighborhood. Combining this insight with the results on positive analytic functionals, we derive that every local positive definite analytic function on a 1-connected Fréchet--BCH--Lie group $G$ extends to a global analytic function.

On Differentiable Vectors for Representations of Infinite Dimensional Lie Groups

In this paper we develop two types of tools to deal with differentiability properties of vectors in continuous representations $π\: G \to \GL(V)$ of an infinite dimensional Lie group $G$ on a locally convex space $V$. The first class of results concerns the space $V^\infty$ of smooth vectors. If $G$ is a Banach--Lie group, we define a topology on the space $V^\infty$ of smooth vectors for which the action of $G$ on this space is smooth. If $V$ is a Banach space, then $V^\infty$ is a Fréchet space. This applies in particular to $C^*$-dynamical systems $(\cA,G, α)$, where $G$ is a Banach--Lie group. For unitary representations we show that a vector $v$ is smooth if the corresponding positive definite function $\la π(g)v,v\ra$ is smooth. The second class of results concerns criteria for $C^k$-vectors in terms of operators of the derived representation for a Banach--Lie group $G$ acting on a Banach space $V$. In particular, we provide for each $k \in \N$ examples of continuous unitary representations for which the space of $C^{k+1}$-vectors is trivial and the space of $C^k$-vectors is dense.

Central extensions of groups of sections

If q : P -> M is a principal K-bundle over the compact manifold M, then any invariant symmetric V-valued bilinear form on the Lie algebra k of K defines a Lie algebra extension of the gauge algebra by a space of bundle-valued 1-forms modulo exact forms. In the present paper we analyze the integrability of this extension to a Lie group extension for non-connected, possibly infinite-dimensional Lie groups K. If K has finitely many connected components we give a complete characterization of the integrable extensions. Our results on gauge groups are obtained by specialization of more general results on extensions of Lie groups of smooth sections of Lie group bundles. In this more general context we provide sufficient conditions for integrability in terms of data related only to the group K.

An abstract setting for hamiltonian actions

In this paper we develop an abstract setup for hamiltonian group actions as follows: Starting with a continuous 2-cochain $ω$ on a Lie algebra $h$ with values in an $h$-module $V$, we associate subalgebras $sp(h,ω) \supeq ham(h,ω)$ of symplectic, resp., hamiltonian elements. Then $ham(h,ω)$ has a natural central extension which in turn is contained in a larger abelian extension of $sp(h,ω)$. In this setting, we study linear actions of a Lie group $G$ on $V$ which are compatible with a homomorphism $g \to ham(h,ω)$, i.e. abstract hamiltonian actions, corresponding central and abelian extensions of $G$ and momentum maps $J : g \to V$.
