From Euler elements and 3-gradings to non-compactly causal symmetric spaces

In this article we discuss the interplay between causal structures of symmetric spaces and geometric aspects of Algebraic Quantum Field Theory (AQFT). The central focus is the set of Euler elements in a Lie algebra, i.e., elements whose adjoint action defines a 3-grading. In the first half of this article we survey the classification of reductive causal symmetric spaces from the perspective of Euler elements. This point of view is motivated by recent applications in AQFT. In the second half we obtain several results that prepare the exploration of the deeper connection between the structure of causal symmetric spaces and AQFT. In particular, we explore the technique of strongly orthogonal roots and corresponding systems of sl_2-subalgebras. Furthermore, we exhibit real Matsuki crowns in the adjoint orbits of Euler elements and we describe the group of connected components of the stabilizer group of Euler elements.

Computer-based and paper-and-pencil tests: A study in calculus for STEM majors

Computer-based testing is an expanding use of technology offering advantages to teachers and students. We studied Calculus II classes for STEM majors using different testing modes. Three sections with 324 students employed: Paper-and-pencil testing, computer-based testing, and both. Computer tests gave immediate feedback, allowed multiple submissions, and pooling. Paper-and-pencil tests required work and explanation allowing inspection of high cognitive demand tasks. Each test mode used the strength of its method. Students were given the same lecture by the same instructor on the same day and the same homework assignments and due dates. The design is quasi-experimental, but students were not aware of the testing mode at registration. Two basic questions examined were: (1) Do paper-and-pencil and computer-based tests measure knowledge and skill in STEM Calculus II in a consistent manner? (2) How does the knowledge and skill gained by students in a fully computer-based Calculus II class compare to students in a class requiring pencil-and-paper tests and hence some paper-and-pencil work. These results indicate that computer-based tests are as consistent with paper-and-pencil tests as computer-based tests are with themselves. Results are also consistent with classes using paper-and-pencil tests having slightly better outcomes than fully computer-based classes using only computer assessments.

Extensions of real bounded symmetric domains

For a real bounded symmetric domain, G/K, we construct various natural enlargements to which several aspects of harmonic analysis on G/K and G have extensions. Our starting point is the realization of G/K as a totally real submanifold in a bounded domain G_h/K_h. We describe the boundary orbits and relate them to the boundary orbits of G_h/K_h. We relate the crown and the split-holomorphic crown of G/K to the crown Ξ_h of G_h/K_h. We identify an extension of a representation of K to a larger group L_c and use that to extend sections of vector bundles over the Borel compactification of G/K to its closure. Also, we show there is an analytic extension of K-finite matrix coefficients of G to a specific Matsuki cycle space.

Nets of standard subspaces on Lie groups

Let G be a Lie group with Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, $h \in \frak{g}$ an element for which the derivation ad(h) defines a 3-grading of $\mathfrak{g}$ and $τ_G$ an involutive automorphism of G inducing on $\mathfrak{g}$ the involution $e^{πi ad(h)}$. We consider antiunitary representations $U$ of the Lie group $G_τ= G \rtimes \{e,τ_G\}$ for which the positive cone $C_U = \{ x \in \mathfrak{g} : -i \partial U(x) \geq 0\}$ and $h$ span $\mathfrak{g}$. To a real subspace E of distribution vectors invariant under $exp(\mathbb{R} h)$ and an open subset $O \subseteq G$, we associate the real subspace $H_E(O) \subseteq H$, generated by the subspaces $U(φ)E$, where $φ\in C^\infty_c(O,\mathbb{R})$ is a real-valued test function on $O$. Then $H_E(O)$ is dense in $H_E(G)$ for every non-empty open subset $O \subseteq G$ (Reeh--Schlider property). For the real standard subspace $V \subseteq H$, for which $J_V = U(τ_G)$ is the modular conjugation and $Δ_V^{-it/2π} = U(\exp th)$ is the modular group, we obtain sufficient conditions to be of the form $H_E(S)$ for an open subsemigroup $S \subseteq G$. If $\mathfrak{g}$ is semisimple with simple hermitian ideals of tube type, we verify these criteria and obtain nets of cyclic subspacs $H_E(O)$, $O \subseteq G$, satisfying the Bisognano--Wichman property for some domains O. Our construction also yields such nets on simple Jordan space-times and compactly causal symmetric spaces of Cayley type. By second quantization, these nets lead to free quantum fields in the sense of Haag--Kastler on causal homogeneous spaces whose groups are generated by modular groups and conjugations.

Reflection Positive Stochastic Processes Indexed by Lie Groups

Reflection positivity originates from one of the Osterwalder-Schrader axioms for constructive quantum field theory. It serves as a bridge between euclidean and relativistic quantum field theory. In mathematics, more specifically, in representation theory, it is related to the Cartan duality of symmetric Lie groups (Lie groups with an involution) and results in a transformation of a unitary representation of a symmetric Lie group to a unitary representation of its Cartan dual. In this article we continue our investigation of representation theoretic aspects of reflection positivity by discussing reflection positive Markov processes indexed by Lie groups, measures on path spaces, and invariant gaussian measures in spaces of distribution vectors. This provides new constructions of reflection positive unitary representations.

Conical Representations for Direct Limits of Symmetric Spaces

We extend the definition of conical representations for Riemannian symmetric spaces to a certain class of infinite-dimensional Riemannian symmetric spaces. Using an infinite-dimensional version of Weyl's Unitary Trick, there is a correspondence between smooth representations of infinite-dimensional noncompact-type Riemannian symmetric spaces and smooth representations of infinite-dimensional compact-type symmetric spaces. We classify all smooth conical representations which are unitary on the compact-type side. Finally, a new class of non-smooth unitary conical representations appears on the compact-type side which has no analogue in the finite-dimensional case. We classify these representations and show how to decompose them into direct integrals of irreducible conical representations.

Paley-Wiener Theorem for Line Bundles over Compact Symmetric Spaces and New Estimates for the Heckman-Opdam Hypergeometric Functions

Paley-Wiener type theorems describe the image of a given space of functions, often compactly supported functions, under an integral transform, usually a Fourier transform on a group or homogeneous space. Several authors have studied Paley-Wiener type theorems for Euclidean spaces, Riemannian symmetric spaces of compact or non-compact type as well as affine Riemannian symmetric spaces. In this article we prove a Paley-Wiener theorem for homogeneous line bundles over a compact symmetric space $U/K$. The Paley-Wiener theorem characterizes f with sufficiently small support in terms of holomorphic extendability and exponential growth of their Fourier transforms. An important tool is a generalization of Opdam's estimate for the hypergeometric functions for multiplicity functions that are not necessarily positive. The domain where this estimate is valid is also bigger. This is done in an appendix.

The $\ct$ transform on line bundles over compact Hermitian symmetric spaces

In a previous article the second author together with A. Pasquale determined the spectrum of the $Cos^λ$ transform on smooth functions on the Grassmann manifolds $G_{p,n+1}$. This article extends those results to line bundles over certain Grassmannians. In particular we define the $Cos^λ$ transform on smooth sections of homogeneous line bundles over$G_{p,n+1}$ and show that it is an intertwining operator between generalized ($χ$-spherical) principal series representations induced from a maximal parabolic subgroup of $\mathrm{SL} (n+1, \mathbb{K})$. Then we use the spectrum generating method to determine the $K$-spectrum of the $Cos^λ$ transform.

Wave Front Sets of Reductive Lie Group Representations

If $G$ is a Lie group, $H\subset G$ is a closed subgroup, and $τ$ is a unitary representation of $H$, then the authors give a sufficient condition on $ξ\in i\mathfrak{g}^*$ to be in the wave front set of $\operatorname{Ind}_H^Gτ$. In the special case where $τ$ is the trivial representation, this result was conjectured by Howe. If $G$ is a real, reductive algebraic group and $π$ is a unitary representation of $G$ that is weakly contained in the regular representation, then the authors give a geometric description of $\operatorname{WF}(π)$ in terms of the direct integral decomposition of $π$ into irreducibles. Special cases of this result were previously obtained by Kashiwara-Vergne, Howe, and Rossmann. The authors give applications to harmonic analysis problems and branching problems.

Integrability of unitary representations on reproducing kernel spaces

Let g be a Banach Lie algebra and τ: g ---> g an involution. Write g=h+q for the eigenspace decomposition of g with respect to τand g^c := h+iq for the dual Lie algebra. In this article we show the integrability of two types of infinitesimally unitary representations of g^c. The first class of representation is determined by a smooth positive definite kernel K on a locally convex manifold M. The kernel is assumed to satisfying a natural invariance condition with respect to an infinitesimal action β: g \to V(M) by locally integrable vector fields that is compatible with a smooth action of a connected Lie group $H$ with Lie algebra h. The second class is constructed from a positive definite kernel corresponding to a positive definite distribution K \in C^{-\infty}(M \times M) on a finite dimensional smooth manifold M which satisfies a similar invariance condition with respect to a homomorphism β: g \to V(M). As a consequence, we get a generalization of the Luscher--Mack Theorem which applies to a class of semigroups that need not have a polar decomposition. Our integrability results also apply naturally to local representations and representations arising in the context of reflection positivity.

Reflection positive one-parameter groups and dilations

The concept of reflection positivity has its origins in the work of Osterwalder--Schrader on constructive quantum field theory. It is a fundamental tool to construct a relativistic quantum field theory as a unitary representation of the Poincare group from a non-relativistic field theory as a representation of the euclidean motion group. This is the second article in a series on the mathematical foundations of reflection positivity. We develop the theory of reflection positive one-parameter groups and the dual theory of dilations of contractive hermitian semigroups. In particular, we connect reflection positivity with the outgoing realization of unitary one-parameter groups by Lax and Phillips. We further show that our results provide effective tools to construct reflection positive representations of general symmetric Lie groups, including the ax+b-group, the Heisenberg group, the euclidean motion group and the euclidean conformal group.

Reflection positivity for the circle group

In this note we characterize those unitary one-parameter groups U^c which admit euclidean realizations in the sense that they are obtained by the analytic continuation process corresponding to reflection positivity from a unitary representation $U$ of the circle group. These are precisely the ones for which there exists an anti-unitary involution $J$ commuting with $U^c$. This provides an interesting link with the modular data arising in Tomita--Takesaki theory. Introducing the concept of a positive definite function with values in the space of sesquilinear forms, we further establish a link between KMS states and reflection positivity on the circle.

Reflection Positivity and Conformal Symmetry

The concept of reflection positivity has its origins in the work of Osterwalder--Schrader on constructive quantum field theory and duality between unitary representations of the euclidean motion group and the Poincare group. On the mathematical side this duality can be made precise as follows. If $\g$ is a Lie algebra with an involutive automorphism $τ$. Decompose $\g = \fh \oplus \fq = \ker(τ- \1) \oplus \ker(τ+ \1)$ into $τ$-eigenspaces and let $\g^c := \fh \oplus i \fq$. At the core of the notion of reflection positivity is the idea that this duality can sometimes be implemented on the level of unitary representations. The idea is simple on the Lie algebra level: Let $(π,\cH^0)$ be a representation of $\g$ where $π$ acts by skew-symmetric operators. Assume that there exists a unitary operator $J$ of order two such that $J πJ = π\circ τ$ and a $\g$-invariant subspace $\cK^0$ which is {\it $J$-positive}. Then complex linear extension leads to a representation of $\g^c$ on $\cK^0$ by operators which are skew-symmetric with respect to $h_J$, so that we obtain a "unitary" representation of $\g^c$ on the pre-Hilbert space $\cK_J^0 := \cK_J/{v \: \cK^0 \: h_J(v,v)=0}$. The aim of this article is twofold. First we discuss reflection positivity in an abstract setting using {\it reflection positive distributions} on the Lie group $G_τ=G\rtimes {1,τ}$ and {\it reflection positive distribution vectors} of a unitary representation of $G_τ$. Then we apply these ideas to the conformal group $\OO_{1,n+1}^+(\R)$ of the sphere $\bS^n$ as well as the the half-space picture mostly used in physics.

The Continuous Spectrum in Discrete Series Branching Laws

If $G$ is a reductive Lie group of Harish-Chandra class, $H$ is a symmetric subgroup, and $π$ is a discrete series representation of $G$, the authors give a condition on the pair $(G,H)$ which guarantees that the direct integral decomposition of $π|_H$ contains each irreducible representation of $H$ with finite multiplicity. In addition, if $G$ is a reductive Lie group of Harish-Chandra class, and $H\subset G$ is a closed, reductive subgroup of Harish-Chandra class, the authors show that the multiplicity function in the direct integral decomposition of $π|_H$ is constant along `continuous parameters'. In obtaining these results, the authors develop a new technique for studying multiplicities in the restriction $π|_H$ via convolution with Harish-Chandra characters. This technique has the advantage of being useful for studying the continuous spectrum as well as the discrete spectrum.

The Radon transform and its dual for limits of symmetric spaces

The Radon transform and its dual are central objects in geometric analysis on Riemannian symmetric spaces of the noncompact type. In this article we study algebraic versions of those transforms on inductive limits of symmetric spaces. In particular, we show that normalized versions exists on some spaces of regular functions on the limit. We give a formula for the normalized transform using integral kernels and relate them to limits of double fibration transforms on spheres.

Coorbit description and atomic decomposition of Besov spaces

Function spaces are central topic in analysis. Often those spaces and related analysis involves symmetries in form of an action of a Lie group. Coorbit theory as introduced by Feichtinger and Gröchenig and then later extended in [3] gives a unified method to construct Banach spaces of functions based on representations of Lie groups. In this article we identify the homogeneous Besov spaces on stratified Lie groups introduced in [13] as coorbit spaces in the sense of [3] and use this to derive atomic decompositions for the Besov spaces.

Direct Systems of Spherical Functions and Representations

Spherical representations and functions are the building blocks for harmonic analysis on riemannian symmetric spaces. In this paper we consider spherical functions and spherical representations related to certain infinite dimensional symmetric spaces $G_\infty/K_\infty = \varinjlim G_n/K_n$. We use the representation theoretic construction $ϕ(x) = <e, π(x)e>$ where $e$ is a $K_\infty$--fixed unit vector for $π$. Specifically, we look at representations $π_\infty = \varinjlim π_n$ of $G_\infty$ where $π_n$ is $K_n$--spherical, so the spherical representations $π_n$ and the corresponding spherical functions $ϕ_n$ are related by $ϕ_n(x) = <e_n, π_n(x)e_n>$ where $e_n$ is a $K_n$--fixed unit vector for $π_n$, and we consider the possibility of constructing a $K_\infty$--spherical function $ϕ_\infty = \lim ϕ_n$. We settle that matter by proving the equivalence of condtions (i) $\{e_n\}$ converges to a nonzero $K_\infty$--fixed vector $e$, and (ii) $G_\infty/K_\infty$ has finite symmetric space rank (equivalently, it is the Grassmann manifold of $p$--planes in $\F^\infty$ where $p < \infty$ and $\F$ is $\R$, $\C$ or $\H$). In that finite rank case we also prove the functional equation $ϕ(x)ϕ(y) = \lim_{n\to \infty} \int_{K_n}ϕ(xky)dk$ of Faraut and Olshanskii, which is their definition of spherical functions.

Ramanujan's Master Theorem for Riemannian symmetric spaces

Ramanujan's Master theorem states that, under suitable conditions, the Mellin transform of a power series provides an interpolation formula for the coefficients of this series. Based on the duality of Riemannian symmetric spaces of compact and noncompact type inside a common complexification, we prove an analogue of Ramanujan's Master Theorem for the spherical Fourier transform of a spherical Fourier series. This extend the results proven by Bertram for Riemannian symmetric spaces of rank-one.

Ramanujan's Master theorem for the hypergeometric Fourier transform on root systems

Ramanujan's Master theorem states that, under suitable conditions, the Mellin transform of an alternating power series provides an interpolation formula for the coefficients of this series. Ramanujan applied this theorem to compute several definite integrals and power series, which explains why it is referred to as the "Master Theorem". In this paper we prove an analogue of Ramanujan's Master theorem for the hypergeometric Fourier transform on root systems. This theorem generalizes to arbitrary positive multiplicity functions the results previously proven by the same authors for the spherical Fourier transform on semisimple Riemannian symmetric spaces.

On low-dimensional manifolds with isometric $\mathrm{SO}_0(p,q)$-actions

Let $G$ be a non-compact simple Lie group with Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. Denote with $m(\mathfrak{g})$ the dimension of the smallest non-trivial $\mathfrak{g}$-module with an invariant non-degenerate symmetric bilinear form. For an irreducible finite volume pseudo-Riemannian analytic manifold $M$ it is observed that $\dim(M) \geq \dim(G) + m(\mathfrak{g})$ when $M$ admits an isometric $G$-action with a dense orbit. The Main Theorem considers the case $G = \widetilde{\mathrm{SO}}_0(p,q)$ providing an explicit description of $M$ when the bound is achieved. In such case, $M$ is (up to a finite covering) the quotient by a lattice of either $\widetilde{\mathrm{SO}}_0(p+1,q)$ or $\widetilde{\mathrm{SO}}_0(p,q+1)$.

Sampling in Spaces of Bandlimited Functions on Commutative Spaces

A connected homogeneous space X=G/K is called commutative if G is a connected Lie group, $K$ is a compact subgroup and the B*-algebra L^1(X)^K of K-invariant integrable function on X is commutative. In this article we introduce the space L^2_A (X) of A-bandlimited function on X by using the spectral decomposition of L^2 (X). We show that those spaces are reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces and determine the reproducing kernel. We then prove sampling results for those spaces using the smoothness of the elements in L^2_A (X). At the end we discuss the example of R^d, the spheres S^d, compact symmetric spaces and the Heisenberg group realized as the commutative space U (n) x H_n/U (n).

The $Cos^λ$ and $Sin^λ$ Transforms as Intertwining Operators between generalized principal series Representations of SL (n+1,K)

In this article we connect topics from convex and integral geometry with well known topics in representation theory of semisimple Lie groups by showing that the $Cos^\lamda$ and $Sin^λ$-transforms on the Grassmann manifolds $Gr_p(K)=SU (n+1,K)/S (U (p,K)\times U (n+1-p,K))$ are standard intertwining operators between certain generalized principal series representations induced from a maximal parabolic subgroup $P_p$ of $SL (n+1,K)$. The index ${}_p$ indicates the dependence of the parabolic on p. The general results of Knapp and Stein and Vogan and Wallach then show that both transforms have meromorphic extension to C and are invertible for generic $λ\in C$. Furthermore, known methods from representation theory combined with a Selberg type integral allow us to determine the K-spectrum of those operators.

The Paley-Wiener Theorem and Limits of Symmetric Spaces

We extend the Paley--Wiener theorem for riemannian symmetric spaces to an important class of infinite dimensional symmetric spaces. For this we define a notion of propagation of symmetric spaces and examine the direct (injective) limit symmetric spaces defined by propagation. This relies on some of our earlier work on invariant differential operators and the action of Weyl group invariant polynomials under restriction.

The Segal-Bargmann Transform on Compact Symmetric Spaces and their Direct Limits

We study the Segal-Bargmann transform, or the heat transform, $H_t$ for a compact symmetric space $M=U/K$. We prove that $H_t$ is a unitary isomorphism $H_t : L^2(M) \to \cH_t (M_\C)$ using representation theory and the restriction principle. We then show that the Segal-Bargmann transform behaves nicely under propagation of symmetric spaces. If $\{M_n=U_n/K_n,ι_{n,m}\}_n$ is a direct family of compact symmetric spaces such that $M_m$ propagates $M_n$, $m\ge n$, then this gives rise to direct families of Hilbert spaces $\{L^2(M_n),γ_{n,m}\}$ and $\{\cH_t(M_{n\C}),δ_{n,m}\}$ such that $H_{t,m}\circ γ_{n,m}=δ_{n,m}\circ H_{t,n}$. We also consider similar commutative diagrams for the $K_n$-invariant case. These lead to isometric isomorphisms between the Hilbert spaces $\varinjlim L^2(M_n)\simeq \varinjlim \mathcal{H} (M_{n\mathbb{C}})$ as well as $\varinjlim L^2(M_n)^{K_n}\simeq \varinjlim \mathcal{H} (M_{n\mathbb{C}})^{K_n}$.

Extension of Symmetric Spaces and Restriction of Weyl Groups and Invariant Polynomials

Polynomial invariants are fundamental objects in analysis on Lie groups and symmetric spaces. Invariant differential operators on symmetric spaces are described by Weyl group invariant polynomial. In this article we give a simple criterion that ensure that the restriction of invariant polynomials to subspaces is surjective. In another paper we will apply our criterion to problems in Fourier analysis on projective/injective limits, specifically to theorems of Paley--Wiener type.

Fourier series on compact symmetric spaces

The Fourier coefficients F(t) of a function f on a compact symmetric space U/K are given by integration of f against matrix coefficients of irreducible representations of U. The coefficients depend on a spectral parameter t, which determines the representation, and they can be represented by elements F(t) in a common Hilbert space H. We obtain a theorem of Paley-Wiener type which describes the size of the support of f by means of the exponential type of a holomorphic H-valued extension of F, provided f is K-finite and of sufficiently small support. The result was obtained previously for K-invariant functions, to which case we reduce.

Paley-Wiener Theorems with respect to the spectral parameter

One of the important questions related to any integral transform on a manifold M or on a homogeneous space G/K is the description of the image of a given space of functions. If M=G/K, where (G,K) is a Gelfand pair, then the harmonic analysis is closely related to the representations of G and the direct integral decomposition of L^2(M) into irreducible representations. We give a short overview of the Fourier transform on such spaces and then ask if one can describe the image of the space of smooth compactly supported functions in terms of the spectral parameter, i.e., the parameterization of the set of irreducible representations in the support of the Plancherel measure for L^2(M). We then discuss the Euclidean motion group, semisimple symmetric spaces, and some limits of those spaces.
