A new type of nodal solutions to singularly perturbed elliptic equations with supercritical growth

In this paper, we aim to investigate the following class of singularly perturbed elliptic problem $$ \left\{ \begin{array}{ll} \displaystyle -\varepsilon^2\triangle {u}+|x|^ηu =|x|^ηf(u)& \mbox{in}\,\, A, u=0 & \mbox{on}\,\, \partial A, \end{array} \right. $$ where $\varepsilon>0$, $η\in\mathbb{R}$, $A=\{x\in\R^{2N}:\,\,0<a<|x|<b\}$, $N\ge2$ and $f$ is a nonlinearity of $C^1$ class with supercritical growth. By a reduction argument, we show that there exists a nodal solution $u_\e$ with exactly two positive and two negative peaks, which concentrate on two different orthogonal spheres of dimension $N-1$ as $\e\rightarrow0$. In particular, we establish different concentration phenomena of four peaks when the parameter $η>2$, $η=2$ and $η<2$.

Estimates of bubbling solutions of $SU(3)$ Toda systems at critical parameters-Part 2

In this article we study bubbling solutions of regular $SU(3)$ Toda systems defined on a Riemann surface. There are two major difficulties corresponding to the profile of bubbling solutions: partial blowup phenomenon and bubble accumulation. We prove that when both parameters tend to critical positions, if there is one fully bubbling blowup point, then under one curvature assumption, all the blowup solutions near a blowup point satisfy a spherical Harnack inequality, which completely rules out the bubble-accumulation phenomenon. This fact is crucial for a number of applications.

Helmholtz Solutions for the Fractional Laplacian and Other Related Operators

We show that the bounded solutions to the fractional Helmholtz equation, $(-Δ)^s u= u$ for $0<s<1$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$, are given by the bounded solutions to the classical Helmholtz equation $(-Δ)u= u$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ for $n \ge 2$ when $u$ is additionally assumed to be vanishing at $\infty$. When $n=1$, we show that the bounded fractional Helmholtz solutions are again given by the classical solutions $A\cos{x} + B\sin{x}$. We show that this classification of fractional Helmholtz solutions extends for $1<s \le 2$ and $s\in \mathbb{N}$ when $u \in C^\infty(\mathbb{R}^n)$. Finally, we prove that the classical solutions are the unique bounded solutions to the more general equation $ψ(-Δ) u= ψ(1)u$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$, when $ψ$ is complete Bernstein and certain regularity conditions are imposed on the associated weight $a(t)$.

Infinite time bubbling for the $SU(2)$ Yang-Mills heat flow on $\mathbb{R}^4$

We investigate the long time behaviour of the Yang-Mills heat flow on the bundle $\mathbb{R}^4\times SU(2)$. Waldron \cite{Waldron2019} proved global existence and smoothness of the flow on closed $4-$manifolds, leaving open the issue of the behaviour in infinite time. We exhibit two types of long-time bubbling: first we construct an initial data and a globally defined solution which {\sl blows-up} in infinite time at a given point in $\mathbb R^4$. Second, we prove the existence of {\sl bubble-tower} solutions, also in infinite time. This answers the basic dynamical properties of the heat flow of Yang-Mills connection in the critical dimension $4$ and shows in particular that in general one cannot expect that this gradient flow converges to a Yang-Mills connection. We emphasize that we do not assume for the first result any symmetry assumption; whereas the second result on the existence of the bubble-tower is in the $SO(4)$-equivariant class, but nevertheless new.

Multi-peak solutions for singularly perturbed nonlinear Dirichlet problems involving critical growth

We consider the following singularly perturbed elliptic problem \[ - {\varepsilon ^2}Δu + u = f(u){\text{ in }}Ω,{\text{ }}u > 0{\text{ in }}Ω,{\text{ }}u = 0{\text{ on }}\partial Ω, \] where $Ω$ is a domain in ${\mathbb{R}^N}(N \ge 3)$, not necessarily bounded, with boundary $\partial Ω\in {C^2}$ and the nonlinearity $f$ is of critical growth. In this paper, we construct a family of multi-peak solutions to the equation given above which concentrate around any prescribed finite sets of local maxima of the distance function from the boundary $\partial Ω$.

On minima of difference of theta functions and application to hexagonal crystallization

Let $z=x+iy \in \mathbb{H}:=\{z= x+ i y\in\mathbb{C}: y>0\}$ and $ θ(α;z)=\sum_{(m,n)\in\mathbb{Z}^2 } e^{-α\frac{π}{y }|mz+n|^2}$ be the theta function associated with the lattice $L ={\mathbb Z}\oplus z{\mathbb Z}$. In this paper we consider the following minimization problem of difference of two theta functions \begin{equation}\aligned\nonumber \min_{ \mathbb{H} } \Big(θ(α; z)-βθ(2α; z)\Big) \endaligned\end{equation} where $α\geq 1$ and $ β\in (-\infty, +\infty)$. We prove that there is a critical value $β_c=\sqrt2$ (independent of $α$) such that if $β\leqβ_c$, the minimizer is $\frac{1}{2}+i\frac{\sqrt3}{2}$ (up to translation and rotation) which corresponds to the hexagonal lattice, and if $β>β_c$, the minimizer does not exist. Our result partially answers some questions raised in \cite{Bet2016, Bet2018, Bet2020, Bet2019AMP} and gives a new proof in the crystallization of hexagonal lattice under Yukawa potential.

The BCC lattice in a long range interaction system

While the hexagonal lattice is ubiquitous in two dimensions, the body centered cubic lattice and the face centered lattice are both commonly observed in three dimensions. A geometric variational problem motivated by the diblock copolymer theory consists of a short range interaction energy and a long range interaction energy. In three dimensions, and when the long range interaction is given by the nonlocal operator $(-Δ)^{-3/2}$, it is proved that the body centered cubic lattice is the preferred structure.

Estimates for Liouville equation with quantized singularities

For Liouville equations with singular sources, the interpretation of the equation and its impact are most significant if the singular sources are quantized: the strength of each Dirac mass is a mutliple of $4π$. However the study of bubbling solutions around a quantized singular source is particularly challenging: near the singular source, the spherical Harnack inequality may not hold and there are multiple local maximums of bubbling solutions all swarming to the singular source. In this article we seek to provide a complete understanding of the blowup picture in this core difficulty and we establish two major types of results: First we prove that not only the first derivatives of coefficient functions tend to zero at the singular source, the second derivatives also have a vanishing estimate. Second we derive pointwise estimates for bubbling solutions to be approximated by global solutions, which have crucial applications in a number of important projects. Since bubbling solutions near a singular source are very commonly observed in geometry and physics, it seems that the estimates in this article can also be applied to many related equations and systems with various backgrounds.

Generalized Adler-Moser Polynomials and Multiple vortex rings for the Gross-Pitaevskii equation

New finite energy traveling wave solutions with small speed are constructed for the three dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation \begin{equation*} iΨ_t= ΔΨ+(1-|Ψ|^2)Ψ, \end{equation*} where $Ψ$ is a complex valued function defined on ${\mathbb R}^3\times{\mathbb R}$. These solutions have the shape of $2n+1$ vortex rings, far away from each other. Among these vortex rings, $n+1$ of them have positive orientation and the other $n$ of them have negative orientation. The location of these rings are described by the roots of a sequence of polynomials with rational coefficients. The polynomials found here can be regarded as a generalization of the classical Adler-Moser polynomials and can be expressed as the Wronskian of certain very special functions. The techniques used in the derivation of these polynomials should have independent interest.

Normalized solutions for Schrödinger equations with critical Sobolev exponent and mixed nonlinearities

In this paper, we consider the following nonlinear Schrödinger equations with mixed nonlinearities: \begin{eqnarray*} \left\{\aligned &-Δu=λu+μ|u|^{q-2}u+|u|^{2^*-2}u\quad\text{in }\mathbb{R}^N,\\ &u\in H^1(\bbr^N),\quad\int_{\bbr^N}u^2=a^2, \endaligned\right. \end{eqnarray*} where $N\geq3$, $μ>0$, $λ\in\mathbb{R}$ and $2<q<2^*$. We prove in this paper \begin{enumerate} \item[$(1)$]\quad Existence of solutions of mountain-pass type for $N=3$ and $2<q<2+\frac{4}{N} $. \item[$(2)$]\quad Existence and nonexistence of ground states for $2+\frac{4}{N}\leq q<2^*$ with $μ>0$ large. \item[$(3)$]\quad Precisely asymptotic behaviors of ground states and mountain-pass solutions as $μ\to0$ and $μ$ goes to its upper bound. \end{enumerate} Our studies answer some questions proposed by Soave in \cite[Remarks~1.1, 1.2 and 8.1]{S20}.

Refined blowup analysis and nonexistence of Type II blowups for an energy critical nonlinear heat equation

We consider the energy critical semilinear heat equation $$ \left\{\begin{aligned} &\partial_t u-Δu =|u|^{\frac{4}{n-2}}u &\mbox{in } {\mathbb R}^n\times(0,T),\\ &u(x,0)=u_0(x), \end{aligned}\right. $$ where $ n\geq 3$, $u_0\in L^\infty({\mathbb R}^n)$, and $T\in {\mathbb R}^+$ is the first blow up time. We prove that if $ n \geq 7$ and $ u_0 \geq 0$, then any blowup must be of Type I, i.e., \[\|u(\cdot, t)\|_{L^\infty({\mathbb R}^n)}\leq C(T-t)^{-\frac{1}{p-1}}.\] A similar result holds for bounded convex domains. The proof relies on a reverse inner-outer gluing mechanism and delicate analysis of bubbling behavior (bubbling tower/cluster).

Classification of finite Morse index solutions of higher-order Gelfand-Liouville equation

We classify finite Morse index solutions of the following Gelfand-Liouville equation \begin{equation*} (-Δ)^{s} u= e^u \ \ \text{in} \ \ \mathbb{R}^n, \end{equation*} for $1<s<2$ and $s=2$ via a novel monotonicity formula and technical blow-down analysis. We show that the above equation does not admit any finite Morse index solution with $(-Δ)^{s/2} u$ vanishes at infinity provided $n>2s$ and \begin{equation*} \label{1.condition} \frac{ Γ(\frac{n+2s}{4})^2 }{ Γ(\frac{n-2s}{4})^2} < \frac{Γ(\frac{n}{2}) Γ(1+s)}{ Γ(\frac{n-2s}{2})}, \end{equation*} where $Γ$ is the classical Gamma function. The cases of $s=1$ and $s=2$ are settled by Dancer and Farina \cite{df,d} and Dupaigne et al. \cite{dggw}, respectively, using Moser iteration arguments established by Crandall and Rabinowitz \cite{CR}. The case of $0<s<1$ is established by Hyder-Yang in \cite{hy} applying arguments provided in \cite{ddw,fw}.

Extinction behaviour for the fast diffusion equations with critical exponent and Dirichlet boundary conditions

For a smooth bounded domain $Ω\subseteq\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\geq 3$, we consider the fast diffusion equation with critical sobolev exponent $$\frac{\partial w}{\partialτ} =Δw^{\frac{n-2}{n+2}}$$ under Dirichlet boundary condition $w(\cdot, τ) = 0$ on $\partialΩ$. Using the parabolic gluing method, we prove existence of an initial data $w_0$ such that the corresponding solution has extinction rate of the form $$\|w(\cdot, τ)\|_{L^\infty(Ω)} = γ_0(T-τ)^{\frac{n+2}{4}}\left|\ln(T-τ)\right|^{\frac{n+2}{2(n-2)}}(1+o(1))$$ as $t\to T^-$, here $T > 0$ is the finite extinction time of $w(x, τ)$. This generalizes and provides rigorous proof of a result of Galaktionov and King \cite{galaktionov2001fast} for the radially symmetric case $Ω=B_1(0) : = \{x\in \mathbb{R}^n||x| < 1\}\subset\mathbb{R}^n$.

Geometry driven Type II higher dimensional blow-up for the critical heat equation

We consider the problem v_t & = Δv+ |v|^{p-1}v \quad\hbox{in }\ Ω\times (0, T), v & =0 \quad\hbox{on } \partial Ω\times (0, T ) , v& >0 \quad\hbox{in }\ Ω\times (0, T) . In a domain $Ω\subset \mathbb R^d$, $d\ge 7$ enjoying special symmetries, we find the first example of a solution with type II blow-up for a power $p$ less than the Joseph-Lundgren exponent $$p_{JL}(d)=\infty, & \text{if $3\le d\le 10$}, 1+{4\over d-4-2\,\sqrt{d-1}}, & \text{if $d\ge11$}. $$ No type II radial blow-up is present for $p< p_{JL}(d)$. We take $p=\frac{d+1}{d-3}$, the Sobolev critical exponent in one dimension less. The solution blows up on circle contained in a negatively curved part of the boundary in the form of a sharply scaled Aubin-Talenti bubble, approaching its energy density a Dirac measure for the curve. This is a completely new phenomenon for a diffusion setting.

New type II Finite time blow-up for the energy supercritical heat equation

We consider the energy supercritical heat equation with the $(n-3)$-th Sobolev exponent \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} u_t=Δu+u^{3},~&\mbox{ in } Ω\times (0,T),\\ u(x,t)=u|_{\partialΩ},~&\mbox{ on } \partialΩ\times (0,T),\\ u(x,0)=u_0(x),~&\mbox{ in } Ω, \end{cases} \end{equation*} where $5\leq n\leq 7$, $Ω=\R^n$ or $Ω\subset \R^n$ is a smooth, bounded domain enjoying special symmetries. We construct type II finite time blow-up solution $u(x,t)$ with the singularity taking place along an $(n-4)$-dimensional {\em shrinking sphere} in $Ω$. More precisely, at leading order, the solution $u(x,t)$ is of the sharply scaled form $$u(x,t)\approx \la^{-1}(t)\frac{2\sqrt{2}}{1+\left|\frac{(r,z)-(ξ_r(t),ξ_z(t))}{\la(t)}\right|^2}$$ where $r=\sqrt{x_1^2+\cdots+x_{n-3}^2}$, $z=(x_{n-2},x_{n-1},x_n)$ with $x=(x_1,\cdots,x_n)\inΩ$. Moreover, the singularity location $$(ξ_r(t),ξ_z(t))\sim (\sqrt{2(n-4)(T-t)},z_0)~\mbox{ as }~t\nearrow T,$$ for some fixed $z_0$, and the blow-up rate $$\la(t)\sim \frac{T-t}{|\log(T-t)|^2}~\mbox{ as }~t\nearrow T.$$ This is a completely new phenomenon in the parabolic setting.

ODE-methods in non-local equations

Non-local equations cannot be treated using classical ODE theorems. Nevertheless, several new methods have been introduced in the non-local gluing scheme of our previous article "On higher dimensional singularities for the fractional Yamabe problem: a non-local Mazzeo-Pacard program"; we survey and improve those, and present new applications as well. First, from the explicit symbol of the conformal fractional Laplacian, a variation of constants formula is obtained for fractional Hardy operators. We thus develop, in addition to a suitable extension in the spirit of Caffarelli--Silvestre, an equivalent formulation as an infinite system of second order constant coefficient ODEs. Classical ODE quantities like the Hamiltonian and Wrońskian may then be utilized. As applications, we obtain a Frobenius theorem and establish new Poho\vzaev identities. We also give a detailed proof for the non-degeneracy of the fast-decay singular solution of the fractional Lane-Emden equation.

Removability of singularities and superharmonicity for some fractional Laplacian equations

We study some qualitative properties (including removable singularities and superharmonicity) of non-negative solutions to $$ (-Δ)^γu=fu^p\quad\text{in }\mathbb R^n\setminusΣ$$ which are singular at $Σ$. Here $γ\in (0, \frac{n}{2})$. Among other things, we first prove that if $Σ$ is a compact set in $\mathbb R^n$ with Assouad dimension $\bf d$ (not necessarily an integer), ${\bf d}<n-2γ$, and $ u\in L_γ(\mathbb R^n)\cap L^p_{loc}({\mathbb R^n\setminusΣ})$ is a non-negative solution for some $$p>\frac{n-\bf d}{n-{\bf d}-2γ},$$ then $u\in L^p_{loc}(\mathbb R^n)$ and $u$ is a distributional solution in $\mathbb R^n$. Then we prove that $ (-Δ)^σu >0$ for all $ σ\in (0, γ)$, if $Σ=ϕ$.

Stability of the saddle solutions for the Allen-Cahn equation

We are concerned with the saddle solutions of the Allen-Cahn equation constructed by Cabré and Terra \cite{C,C2} in $\mathbb{R}^{2m}% =\mathbb{R}^{m}\times\mathbb{R}^{m}$. These solutions vanish precisely on the Simons cone. The existence and uniqueness of saddle solution are shown in \cite{C,C2,C1}. Regarding the stability, Schatzman \cite{Sch} proved that the saddle solution is unstable for $m=1,$ Cabré \cite{C1} showed the instability for $m=2,3$ and stability for $m\geq7$. This has left open the case of $m=4,5,6$. In this paper we show that the saddle solutions are stable when $m=4,5,6$, thereby confirming Cabré's conjecture in \cite{C1}. The conjecture that saddle solutions in dimensions $2m\geq8$ should be global minimizers of the energy functional remains open.

Travelling and rotating solutions to the generalized inviscid surface quasi-geostrophic equation

For the generalized surface quasi-geostrophic equation $$\left\{ \begin{aligned} & \partial_t θ+u\cdot \nabla θ=0, \quad \text{in } \mathbb{R}^2 \times (0,T), \\ & u=\nabla^\perp ψ, \quad ψ= (-Δ)^{-s}θ\quad \text{in } \mathbb{R}^2 \times (0,T) , \end{aligned} \right. $$ $0<s<1$, we consider for $k\ge1$ the problem of finding a family of $k$-vortex solutions $θ_\varepsilon(x,t)$ such that as $\varepsilon\to 0$ $$ θ_\varepsilon(x,t) \rightharpoonup \sum_{j=1}^k m_jδ(x-ξ_j(t)) $$ for suitable trajectories for the vortices $x=ξ_j(t)$. We find such solutions in the special cases of vortices travelling with constant speed along one axis or rotating with same speed around the origin. In those cases the problem is reduced to a fractional elliptic equation which is treated with singular perturbation methods. A key element in our construction is a proof of the non-degeneracy of the radial ground state for the so-called fractional plasma problem $$(-Δ)^sW = (W-1)^γ_+, \quad \text{in } \mathbb{R}^2, \quad 1<γ< \frac{1+s}{1-s}$$ whose existence and uniqueness have recently been proven in \cite{chan_uniqueness_2020}.

Travelling helices and the vortex filament conjecture in the incompressible Euler equations

We consider the Euler equations in ${\mathbb R}^3$ expressed in vorticity form. A classical question that goes back to Helmholtz is to describe the evolution of solutions with a high concentration around a curve. The work of Da Rios in 1906 states that such a curve must evolve by the so-called binormal curvature flow. Existence of true solutions concentrated near a given curve that evolves by this law is a long-standing open question that has only been answered for the special case of a circle travelling with constant speed along its axis, the thin vortex-rings. We provide what appears to be the first rigorous construction of {\em helical filaments}, associated to a translating-rotating helix. The solution is defined at all times and does not change form with time. The result generalizes to multiple similar helical filaments travelling and rotating together.

Type II Finite time blow-up for the three dimensional energy critical heat equation

We consider the following Cauchy problem for three dimensional energy critical heat equation \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} u_t=Δu+u^{5},~&\mbox{ in } \ {\mathbb R}^3 \times (0,T),\\ u(x,0)=u_0(x),~&\mbox{ in } \ {\mathbb R}^3. \end{cases} \end{equation*} We construct type II finite time blow-up solution $u(x,t)$ with the blow-up rates $ \| u\|_{L^\infty} \sim (T-t)^{-k}$, where $ k=1,2,... $. This gives a rigorous proof of the formal computations by Filippas, Herrero and Velazquez \cite{fhv}. This is the first instance of type II finite time blow-up for three dimensional energy critical heat equation.

We prove the existence and non-existence results under suitable assumptions on $β_{i,\ell}$. This generalizes Luo-Tian's \cite{Luo-Tian} result for a singular Liouville equation in $\mathbb{R}^2$. We also study existence results for a higher order singular Liouville equation in $\mathbb{R}^n$.

The existence of such solutions was conjectured by Fila and King.

Local Uniqueness and Refined Spike Profiles of Ground States for Two-Dimensional Attractive Bose-Einstein Condensates

We consider ground states of two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates in a trap with attractive interactions, which can be described equivalently by positive minimizers of the $L^2-$critical constraint Gross-Pitaevskii energy functional. It is known that ground states exist if and only if $a< a^*:= \|w\|_2^2$, where $a$ denotes the interaction strength and $w$ is the unique positive solution of $Δw-w+w^3=0$ in $R^2$. In this paper, we prove the local uniqueness and refined spike profiles of ground states as $a\nearrow a^*$, provided that the trapping potential $h(x)$ is homogeneous and $H(y)=\int_{R^2} h(x+y)w^2(x)dx$ admits a unique and non-degenerate critical point.

Toda systems and hypergeometric equations

This paper establishes certain existence and classification results for solutions to $SU(n)$ Toda systems with three singular sources at 0, 1, and $\infty$. First, we determine the necessary conditions for such an $SU(n)$ Toda system to be related to an $n$th order hypergeometric equation. Then, we construct solutions for $SU(n)$ Toda systems that satisfy the necessary conditions and also the interlacing conditions from Beukers and Heckman. Finally, for $SU(3)$ Toda systems satisfying the necessary conditions, we classify, under a natural reality assumption, that all the solutions are related to hypergeometric equations. This proof uses the Pohozaev identity.

Traveling wave solutions for bistable fractional Allen-Cahn equations with a pyramidal front

Using the method of sub-super-solution, we construct a solution of $(-Δ)^su-cu_z-f(u)=0$ on $\R^3$ of pyramidal shape. Here $(-Δ)^s$ is the fractional Laplacian of sub-critical order $1/2<s<1$ and $f$ is a bistable nonlinearity. Hence, the existence of a traveling wave solution for the parabolic fractional Allen-Cahn equation with pyramidal front is asserted. The maximum of planar traveling wave solutions in various directions gives a sub-solution. A super-solution is roughly defined as the one-dimensional profile composed with the signed distance to a rescaled mollified pyramid. In the main estimate we use an expansion of the fractional Laplacian in the Fermi coordinates.

A non-compactness result on the fractional Yamabe problem in large dimensions

Let $(X^{n+1}, g^+)$ be an $(n+1)$-dimensional asymptotically hyperbolic manifold with a conformal infinity $(M^n, [\hat{h}])$. The fractional Yamabe problem addresses to solve \[P^γ[g^+,\hat{h}] (u) = cu^{n+2γ\over n-2γ}, \quad u > 0 \quad \text{on } M\] where $c \in \mathbb{R}$ and $P^γ[g^+,\hat{h}]$ is the fractional conformal Laplacian whose principal symbol is $(-Δ)^γ$. In this paper, we construct a metric on the half space $X = \mathbb{R}^{n+1}_+$, which is conformally equivalent to the unit ball, for which the solution set of the fractional Yamabe equation is non-compact provided that $n \ge 24$ for $γ\in (0, γ^*)$ and $n \ge 25$ for $γ\in [γ^*,1)$ where $γ^* \in (0, 1)$ is a certain transition exponent. The value of $γ^*$ turns out to be approximately 0.940197.

A pointwise inequality for the fourth order Lane-Emden equation

We prove that the following pointwise inequality holds \begin{equation*} -Δu \ge \sqrt\frac{2}{(p+1)-c_n} |x|^{\frac{a}{2}} u^{\frac{p+1}{2}} + \frac{2}{n-4} \frac{|\nabla u|^2}{u} \ \ \text{in}\ \ \mathbb{R}^n \end{equation*} where $c_n:=\frac{8}{n(n-4)}$, for positive bounded solutions of the fourth order Hénon equation that is \begin{equation*} Δ^2 u = |x|^a u^p \ \ \ \ \text {in }\ \ \mathbb{R}^n \end{equation*} for some $a\ge0$ and $p>1$. Motivated by the Moser's proof of the Harnack's inequality as well as Moser iteration type arguments in the regularity theory, we develop an iteration argument to prove the above pointwise inequality. As far as we know this is the first time that such an argument is applied towards constructing pointwise inequalities for partial differential equations. An interesting point is that the coefficient $\frac{2}{n-4}$ also appears in the fourth order $Q$-curvature and the Paneitz operator. This in particular implies that the scalar curvature of the conformal metric with conformal factor $u^\frac{4}{n-4}$ is positive.

Boundary concentrations on segments

We consider the following singularly perturbed Neumann problem \begin{eqnarray*} \ve^2 Δu -u +u^p = 0 \, \quad u>0 \quad {\mbox {in}} \quad Ω, \quad {\partial u \over \partial ν}=0 \quad {\mbox {on}} \quad \partial Ω, \end{eqnarray*} where $p>2$ and $Ω$ is a smooth and bounded domain in $\R^2$. We construct a new class of solutions which consist of large number of spikes concentrating on a {\bf segment} of the boundary which contains a local minimum point of the mean curvature function and has the same mean curvature at the end points. We find a continuum limit of ODE systems governing the interactions of spikes and show that the mean curvature function acts as {\em friction force}.

Catenoidal layers for the Allen-Cahn equation in bounded domains

We provide asymptotic behavior which shows that, as $α\to 0$, the level sets of the solutions collapse onto a bounded portion of a complete embedded minimal surface with finite total curvature that intersects orthogonally $\partial Ω$ of the domain and that is non-degenerate respect to $Ω$. We provide explicit examples of surfaces to which our result applies.

Local profile of fully bubbling solutions to SU(n+1) Toda Systems

In this article we prove that for locally defined singular SU(n+1) Toda systems in R^2, the profile of fully bubbling solutions near the singular source can be accurately approximated by global solutions. The main ingredients of our new approach are the classification theorem of Lin-Wei-Ye and the non-degeneracy of the linearized Toda system, which make us overcome the difficulties that come from the lack of symmetry and the singular source.

Multi-bump ground states of the fractional Gierer-Meinhardt system in $\mathbb{R}$

In this paper we study ground-states of the fractional Gierer-Meinhardt system on the line, namely the solutions of the problem \begin{equation*} \left\{\begin{array}{ll} (-Δ)^su+u-\frac{u^2}{v}=0,\quad &\mathrm{in}~\mathbb{R},\\ (-Δ)^sv+\varepsilon^{2s}v-u^2=0,\quad &\mathrm{in}~\mathbb{R},\\ u,v>0,\quad u,v\rightarrow0~&\mathrm{as}~|x|\rightarrow+\infty. \end{array}\right. \end{equation*} We prove that given any positive integer $k,$ there exists a solution to this problem for $s\in[\frac12,1)$ exhibiting exactly $k$ bumps in its $u-$component, separated from each other at a distance $O(\varepsilon^{\frac{1-2s}{4s}})$ for $s\in(\frac12,1)$ and $O(|\log\varepsilon|^{\frac12})$ for $s=\frac12$ respectively, whenever $\varepsilon$ is sufficiently small. Under some natural conditions on K near a critical point, we prove the existence of multi-bump solutions where the centers of bumps can be placed in some lattices in Rk, including infinite lattices. We also show that for 2k greater than or equal to n-2, no such solutions exist.

This paper concerns rigidity results to Serrin's overdetermined problem in an epigraph $$ \{\begin{aligned} &Δu+ f(u)=0,\ \ \ {in}\ Ω=\{(x^\prime,x_n): x_n>φ(x^\prime)\},\\ &u>0,\ \ \ {in}\ Ω,\\ &u=0,\ \ \ {on}\ \partialΩ,\\ &|\nabla u|=const. {on} \partialΩ. \end{aligned}. $$ We prove that up to isometry the epigraph must be an half space and that the solution $u$ must be one-dimensional, provided that one of the following assumptions are satisfied: either $n=2$; or $ φ$ is globally Lipschitz, or $n \leq 8$ and $ \frac{\partial u}{\partial x_n} >0$ in $Ω$. In view of the counterexample constructed in \cite{DPW} in dimensions $n\geq 9$ this result is optimal. This partially answers a conjecture of Berestycki, Caffarelli and Nirenberg \cite{BCN}.

Uniqueness and nondegeneracy of sign-changing radial solutions to an almost critical elliptic problem

In this paper, we show that such sign-changing radial solution is also unique when $p$ is close to $\frac{N+2}{N-2}$. Moreover, those solutions are non-degenerate, i.e., the kernel of the linearized operator is exactly $N$-dimensional.

Convergence rate, location and $\partial_z^2$ condition for fully bubbling solutions to SU(n+1) Toda Systems

It is well known that the study of $SU(n+1)$ Toda systems is important not only to Chern-Simons models in Physics, but also to the understanding of holomorphic curves, harmonic sequences or harmonic maps from Riemann surfaces to $\mathbb C\mathbb P^n$. One major goal in the study of $SU(n+1)$ Toda system on Riemann surfaces is to completely understand the asymptotic behavior of fully bubbling solutions. In this article we use a unified approach to study fully bubbling solutions to general $SU(n+1)$ Toda systems and we prove three major sharp estimates important for constructing bubbling solutions: the closeness of blowup solutions to entire solutions, the location of blowup points and a $\partial_z^2$ condition.

Nonlocal $s$-minimal surfaces and Lawson cones

The nonlocal $s$-fractional minimal surface equation for $Σ= \partial E$ where $E$ is an open set in $R^N$ is given by $$ H_Σ^ s (p) := \int_{R^N} \frac {χ_E(x) - χ_{E^c}(x)} {|x-p|^{N+s}}\, dx \ =\ 0 \quad \text{for all } p\in Σ. $$ Here $0<s<1$, $χ$ designates characteristic function, and the integral is understood in the principal value sense. The classical notion of minimal surface is recovered by letting $s\to 1$. In this paper we exhibit the first concrete examples (beyond the plane) of nonlocal $s-$minimal surfaces. When $s$ is close to $1$, we first construct a connected embedded $s$-minimal surface of revolution in $R^3$, the {\bf nonlocal catenoid}, an analog of the standard catenoid $|x_3| = \log (r + \sqrt{r^2 -1})$. Rather than eventual logarithmic growth, this surface becomes asymptotic to the cone $|x_3|= r\sqrt{1-s}$. We also find a two-sheet embedded $s$-minimal surface asymptotic to the same cone, an analog to the simple union of two parallel planes. On the other hand, for any $0<s<1$, $n,m\ge 1$, $s-$minimal Lawson cones $|v|=α|u|$, $(u,v)\in R^n\times R^m$, are found to exist. In sharp contrast with the classical case, we prove their stability for small $s$ and $n+m=7$, which suggests that unlike the classical theory (or the case $s$ close to 1), the regularity of $s$-area minimizing surfaces may not hold true in dimension $7$.

On Non-topological Solutions of the ${\bf G}_2$ Chern-Simons System

For any rank 2 of simple Lie algebra, the relativistic Chern-Simons system has the following form: \begin{equation}\label{e001} \left\{\begin{array}{c} Δu_1+(\sum_{i=1}^2K_{1i}e^{u_i} -\sum_{i=1}^2\sum_{j=1}^2e^{u_i}K_{1i}e^{u_j}K_{ij})=4π\displaystyle \sum_{j=1}^{N_1}δ_{p_j}\\ Δu_2+ (\sum_{i=1}^2K_{2i}e^{u_i}-\sum_{i=1}^2\sum_{j=1}^2e^{u_i}K_{2i}e^{u_j}K_{ij})=4π\displaystyle \sum_{j=1}^{N_2}δ_{q_j} \end{array} \right.\mbox{in}\; \mathbb{R}^2, \end{equation} where $K$ is the Cartan matrix of rank $2$. There are three Cartan matrix of rank 2: ${\bf A}_2$, ${\bf B}_2$ and ${\bf G}_2$. A long-standing open problem for \eqref{e001} is the question of the existence of non-topological solutions. In a previous paper \cite{ALW}, we have proven the existence of non-topological solutions for the ${\bf A}_2$ and ${\bf B}_2$ Chern-Simons system. In this paper, we continue to consider the ${\bf G}_2$ case. We prove the existence of non-topological solutions under the condition that either $N_2\displaystyle\sum_{j=1}^{N_1} p_j=N_1\displaystyle \sum_{j=1}^{N_2} q_j $ or $N_2\displaystyle\sum_{j=1}^{N_1}p_j \not =N_1\displaystyle \sum_{j=1}^{N_2} q_j$ and $N_1,N_2>1$, $ |N_1-N_2|\neq 1$. We solve this problem by a perturbation from the corresponding ${\bf G}_2$ Toda system with one singular source. Combining with \cite{ALW}, we have proved the existence of non-topological solutions to the Chern-Simons system with Cartan matrix of rank $2$.

A Monotonicity Formula and a Liouville-type Theorem for a Fourth Order Supercritical Problem

We consider Liouville-type and partial regularity results for the nonlinear fourth-order problem $$ Δ^2 u=|u|^{p-1}u\ \{in} \ \R^n,$$ where $ p>1$ and $n\ge1$. We give a complete classification of stable and finite Morse index solutions (whether positive or sign changing), in the full exponent range. We also compute an upper bound of the Hausdorff dimension of the singular set of extremal solutions. Our approach is motivated by Fleming's tangent cone analysis technique for minimal surfaces and Federer's dimension reduction principle in partial regularity theory. A key tool is the monotonicity formula for biharmonic equations.

Concentrating standing waves for the fractional nonlinear Schrödinger equation

We consider the semilinear equation $$ ε^{2s} (-Δ)^s u + V(x)u - u^p = 0, \quad u>0, \quad u\in H^{2s}(\R^N) $$ where $0<s<1,\ 1<p<\frac{N+2s}{N-2s}$, $ V(x)$ is a sufficiently smooth potential with $\inf_\R V(x)> 0$, and $ε>0$ is a small number. Letting $w_λ$ be the radial ground state of $(-Δ)^s w_λ+ λw_λ- w_λ^p=0$ in $H^{2s}(\R^N)$, we build solutions of the form $$ u_ε(x) \sim \sum_{i=1}^k w_{λ_i} ((x-ξ_i^ε)/ε),$$ where $λ_i = V(ξ_i^ε)$ and the $ξ_i^ε$ approach suitable critical points of $V$. Via a Lyapunov Schmidt variational reduction, we recover various existence results already known for the case $s=1$. In particular such a solution exists around $k$ nondegenerate critical points of $V$. For $s=1$ this corresponds to the classical results by Floer-Weinstein and Oh.

Existence of Symmetric and Asymmetric Spikes for a Crime Hotspot Model

We study a crime hotspot model suggested by Short-Bertozzi-Brantingham. The aim of this work is to establish rigorously the formation of hotspots in this model representing concentrations of criminal activity. More precisely, for the one-dimensional system, we rigorously prove the existence of steady states with multiple spikes of the following types: (i) Multiple spikes of arbitrary number having the same amplitude (symmetric spikes), (ii) Multiple spikes having different amplitude for the case of one large and one small spike (asymmetric spikes). We use an approach based on Liapunov-Schmidt reduction and extend it to the quasilinear crime hotspot model. Some novel results that allow us to carry out the Liapunov-Schmidt reduction are: (i) approximation of the quasilinear crime hotspot system on the large scale by the semilinear Schnakenberg model, (ii) estimate of the spatial dependence of the second component on the small scale which is dominated by the quasilinear part of the system. The paper concludes with an extension to the anisotropic case.

Infinitely many positive solutions of nonlinear Schrödinger equations with non-symmetric potentials

We consider the standing-wave problem for a nonlinear Schrödinger equation, corresponding to the semilinear elliptic problem \begin{equation*} -Δu+V(x)u=|u|^{p-1}u,\ u\in H^1(\mathbb{R}^2), \end{equation*} where $V(x)$ is a uniformly positive potential and $p>1$. Assuming that \begin{equation*} V(x)=V_\infty+\frac{a}{|x|^m}+O\Big(\frac{1}{|x|^{m+σ}}\Big),\ \text{as}\ |x|\rightarrow+\infty, %\tag{$V2$} \end{equation*} for instance if $p>2$, $m>2$ and $σ>1$ we prove the existence of infinitely many positive solutions. If $V(x)$ is radially symmetric, this result was proved in \cite{WY-10}. The proof without symmetries is much more difficult, and for that we develop a new {\em intermediate Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction method}, which is a compromise between the finite and infinite dimensional versions of it.

Logarithmic Expansions and the Stability of Periodic Patterns of Localized Spots for Reaction-Diffusion Systems in $\R^2

The linear stability of steady-state periodic patterns of localized spots in $\R^2$ for the two-component Gierer-Meinhardt (GM) and Schnakenburg reaction-diffusion models is analyzed in the semi-strong interaction limit corresponding to an asymptotically small diffusion coefficient $\eps^2$ of the activator concentration. In the limit $\eps\to 0$, localized spots in the activator are centered at the lattice points of a Bravais lattice with constant area $|Ω|$. To leading order in $ν={-1/\log\eps}$, the linearization of the steady-state periodic spot pattern has a zero eigenvalue when the inhibitor diffusivity satisfies $D={D_0/ν}$, for some $D_0$ independent of the lattice and the Bloch wavevector $\kb$. From a combination of the method of matched asymptotic expansions, Floquet-Bloch theory, and the rigorous study of certain nonlocal eigenvalue problems, an explicit analytical formula for the continuous band of spectrum that lies within an ${\mathcal O}(ν)$ neighborhood of the origin in the spectral plane is derived when $D={D_0/ν} + D_1$, where $D_1={\mathcal O}(1)$ is a de-tuning parameter. The periodic pattern is linearly stable when $D_1$ is chosen small enough so that this continuous band is in the stable left-half plane $\mbox{Re}(λ)<0$ for all $\kb$. Moreover, for both the Schnakenburg and GM models, our analysis identifies a model-dependent objective function, involving the regular part of the Bloch Green's function, that must be maximized in order to determine the specific periodic arrangement of localized spots that constitutes a linearly stable steady-state pattern for the largest value of $D$. From a numerical computation, it is shown within the class of oblique Bravais lattices that a regular hexagonal lattice arrangement of spots is optimal for maximizing the stability threshold in $D$.

Serrin's Overdetermined Problem and Constant Mean Curvature Surfaces

For all $N \geq 9$, we find smooth entire epigraphs in $\R^N$, namely smooth domains of the form $Ω: = \{x\in \R^N\ / \ x_N > F (x_1,\ldots, x_{N-1})\}$, which are not half-spaces and in which a problem of the form $Δu + f(u) = 0 $ in $Ω$ has a positive, bounded solution with 0 Dirichlet boundary data and constant Neumann boundary data on $\partial Ω$. This answers negatively for large dimensions a question by Berestycki, Caffarelli and Nirenberg \cite{bcn2}. In 1971, Serrin \cite{serrin} proved that a bounded domain where such an overdetermined problem is solvable must be a ball, in analogy to a famous result by Alexandrov that states that an embedded compact surface with constant mean curvature (CMC) in Euclidean space must be a sphere. In lower dimensions we succeed in providing examples for domains whose boundary is close to large dilations of a given CMC surface where Serrin's overdetermined problem is solvable.

The Stability of Steady-State Hot-Spot Patterns for a Reaction-Diffusion Model of Urban Crime

The existence and stability of localized patterns of criminal activity are studied for the reaction-diffusion model of urban crime that was introduced by Short et. al. [Math. Models. Meth. Appl. Sci., 18, Suppl. (2008), pp. 1249--1267]. Such patterns, characterized by the concentration of criminal activity in localized spatial regions, are referred to as hot-spot patterns and they occur in a parameter regime far from the Turing point associated with the bifurcation of spatially uniform solutions. Singular perturbation techniques are used to construct steady-state hot-spot patterns in one and two-dimensional spatial domains, and new types of nonlocal eigenvalue problems are derived that determine the stability of these hot-spot patterns to ${\mathcal O}(1)$ time-scale instabilities. From an analysis of these nonlocal eigenvalue problems, a critical threshold $K_c$ is determined such that a pattern consisting of $K$ hot-spots is unstable to a competition instability if $K>K_c$. This instability, due to a positive real eigenvalue, triggers the collapse of some of the hot-spots in the pattern. Furthermore, in contrast to the well-known stability results for spike patterns of the Gierer-Meinhardt reaction-diffusion model, it is shown for the crime model that there is only a relatively narrow parameter range where oscillatory instabilities in the hot-spot amplitudes occur. Such an instability, due to a Hopf bifurcation, is studied explicitly for a single hot-spot in the shadow system limit, for which the diffusivity of criminals is asymptotically large. Finally, the parameter regime where localized hot-spots occur is compared with the parameter regime, studied in previous works, where Turing instabilities from a spatially uniform steady-state occur.

Classification and nondegeneracy of $SU(n+1)$ Toda system with singular sources

We consider the following Toda system Δu_i + \D \sum_{j = 1}^n a_{ij}e^{u_j} = 4πγ_{i}δ_{0} \text{in}\mathbb R^2, \int_{\mathbb R^2}e^{u_i} dx < \infty, \forall 1\leq i \leq n, where $γ_{i} > -1$, $δ_0$ is Dirac measure at 0, and the coefficients $a_{ij}$ form the standard tri-diagonal Cartan matrix. In this paper, (i) we completely classify the solutions and obtain the quantization result: $$\sum_{j=1}^n a_{ij}\int_{\R^2}e^{u_j} dx = 4π(2+γ_i+γ_{n+1-i}), \;\;\forall\; 1\leq i \leq n.$$ This generalizes the classification result by Jost and Wang for $γ_i=0$, $\forall \;1\leq i\leq n$. (ii) We prove that if $γ_i+γ_{i+1}+...+γ_j \notin \mathbb Z$ for all $1\leq i\leq j\leq n$, then any solution $u_i$ is \textit{radially symmetric} w.r.t. 0. (iii) We prove that the linearized equation at any solution is \textit{non-degenerate}. These are fundamental results in order to understand the bubbling behavior of the Toda system.

In this paper we construct a new kind of positive solutions of $$\De u-u+u^{p}=0 \text{on} \R^2$$ when $p> 2.$ These solutions $\displaystyle{u(x,z)\sim \om(x-f(z))+ \sum_{i=1}^{\infty}\om_{0}((x, z)-ξ_i\vec{e}_{1})}$ as $L\rightarrow +\infty$ where $\om$ is a unique positive homoclinic solution of $\om"-\om+\om^{p}=0$ in $\R$ ; $\om_{0}$ is the two dimensional positive solution and $\vec{e}_{1}= (1, 0)$ and $ξ_{j}$ are points such that $ξ_{j}= jL+ \mathcal{O}(1)$ for all $j\geq 1.$ This represents a first result on the {\em coexistence} of fronts and bumps. Geometrically, our new solutions correspond to {\em triunduloid} in the theory of CMC surface.

Non-compactness of the Prescribed Q-curvature Problem in Large Dimensions

Let $(M, g)$ be a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension $N \geq 5$ and $Q_g$ be its $Q$ curvature. The prescribed $Q$ curvature problem is concerned with finding metric of constant $Q$ curvature in the conformal class of $g$. This amounts to finding a positive solution to \[ P_g (u)= c u^{\frac{N+4}{N-4}}, u>0 {on} M\] where $P_g$ is the Paneitz operator. We show that for dimensions $N \geq 25$, the set of all positive solutions to the prescribed $Q$ curvature problem is {\em non-compact}.

The Lin-Ni's problem for mean convex domains

We prove some refined asymptotic estimates for postive blowing up solutions to $Δu+εu=n(n-2)u^{\frac{n+2}{n-2}}$ on $Ω$, $\partial_νu=0$ on $\partialΩ$; $Ω$ being a smooth bounded domain of $\rn$, $n\geq 3$. In particular, we show that concentration can occur only on boundary points with nonpositive mean curvature when $n=3$ or $n\geq 7$. As a direct consequence, we prove the validity of the Lin-Ni's conjecture in dimension $n=3$ and $n\geq 7$ for mean convex domains and with bounded energy. Recent examples by Wang-Wei-Yan show that the bound on the energy is a necessary condition.

Interface Foliation Near Minimal Submanifolds in Riemannian Manifolds with Positive Ricci Curvature

Let $(\MM ,{\tilde g})$ be an $N$-dimensional smooth compact Riemannian manifold. We consider the singularly perturbed Allen-Cahn equation $$ ε^2Δ_{ {\tilde g}} {u}\,+\, (1 - {u}^2)u \,=\,0\quad \mbox{in } \MM, $$ where $ε$ is a small parameter. Let $\KK\subset \MM$ be an $(N-1)$-dimensional smooth minimal submanifold that separates $\MM$ into two disjoint components. Assume that $\KK$ is non-degenerate in the sense that it does not support non-trivial Jacobi fields, and that $|A_{\KK}|^2+\mbox{Ric}_{\tilde g}(ν_{\KK}, ν_{\KK})$ is positive along $\KK$. Then for each integer $m\geq 2$, we establish the existence of a sequence $ε= ε_j\to 0$, and solutions $u_ε$ with $m$-transition layers near $\KK$, with mutual distance $O(ε|\ln ε|)$.

On least Energy Solutions to A Semilinear Elliptic Equation in A Strip

We consider the following semilinear elliptic equation on a strip: \[ \left\{{array}{l} Δu-u + u^p=0 \ {in} \ \R^{N-1} \times (0, L), u>0, \frac{\partial u}{\partial ν}=0 \ {on} \ \partial (\R^{N-1} \times (0, L)) {array} \right.\] where $ 1< p\leq \frac{N+2}{N-2}$. When $ 1<p <\frac{N+2}{N-2}$, it is shown that there exists a unique $L_{*} >0$ such that for $L \leq L_{*}$, the least energy solution is trivial, i.e., doesn't depend on $x_N$, and for $L >L_{*}$, the least energy solution is nontrivial. When $N \geq 4, p=\frac{N+2}{N-2}$, it is shown that there are two numbers $L_{*}<L_{**}$ such that the least energy solution is trivial when $L \leq L_{*}$, the least energy solution is nontrivial when $L \in (L_{*}, L_{**}]$, and the least energy solution does not exist when $L >L_{**}$. A connection with Delaunay surfaces in CMC theory is also made.

Orbital stability of bound states of nonlinear Schrodinger equations with linear and nonlinear optical lattices

We study the orbital stability and instability of single-spike bound states of semiclassical nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equations with critical exponent, linear and nonlinear optical lattices (OLs). These equations may model two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates in linear and nonlinear OLs. When linear OLs are switched off, we derive the asymptotic expansion formulas and obtain necessary conditions for the orbital stability and instability of single-spike bound states, respectively. When linear OLs are turned on, we consider three different conditions of linear and nonlinear OLs to develop mathematical theorems which are most general on the orbital stability problem.

Infinitely many positive solutions for the nonlinear Shcrodinger equations in $R^N$

We consider the following nonlinear problem in $\R^N$ $$\label{eq} - Δu +V(|y|)u=u^{p},\quad u>0 {in} \R^N, u \in H^1(\R^N) $$ where $V(r)$ is a positive function, $1<p <\frac{N+2}{N-2}$. We show that if $V(r)$ has the following expansion: There are constants $a>0$, $m>1$, $θ>0$, and $V_0>0$, such that \[ V(r)= V_0+\frac a {r^m} +O\bigl(\frac1{r^{m+θ}}\bigr),\quad \text{as $r\to +\infty$,} \] then \eqref{eq} has {\bf infinitely many non-radial positive} solutions, whose energy can be made arbitrarily large.

Infinitely many solution for prescribed curvature problem on $S^N$

We consider the following prescribed scalar curvature problem on $ S^N$ (*)$$\left\{\begin{array}{l} - Δ_{S^N} u + \frac{N(N-2)}{2} u = \tilde{K} u^{\frac{N+2}{N-2}} {on} S^N, u >0 \end{array}\right. $$ where $ \tilde{K}$ is positive and rotationally symmetric. We show that if $\tilde{K}$ has a local maximum point between the poles then equation (*) has {\bf infinitely many non-radial positive} solutions, whose energy can be made arbitrarily large.
