Existence of finite time blow-up in Keller-Segel system

Perhaps the most classical diffusion model for chemotaxis is the Keller-Segel system $\begin{equation} \begin{cases} u_{t} =Δu - \nabla \cdot(u \nabla v) \ \ \ \text{in } \mathbb{R}^2\times(0,T),\\[5pt] v = (-Δ_{\mathbb{R}^2})^{-1} u := \displaystyle\frac {1}{2π} \displaystyle\int_{\mathbb{R}^2} \log \frac {1}{|x-z|}u(z,t) dz, \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ (\star)\\[5pt] u(\cdot ,0) = u_{0}^{\star} \ge 0 \ \ \ \text{in } \mathbb{R}^2. \end{cases} \end{equation}$ We show that there exists $\varepsilon>0$ such that for any $m$ satisfying $8π<m\le 8π+\varepsilon$ and any $k$ given points $q_{1},...,q_{k}$ in $\mathbb{R}^{2}$ there is an initial data $u_0^*$ of $(\star)$ for which the solution $u(x,t)$ blows-up in finite time as $t\to T$ with the approximate profile $$u(x,t)=\sum_{j=1}^{k}\frac{1}{λ_{j}^{2}(t)}U\left(\frac{x-ξ_{j}(t)}{λ_{j}(t)}\right)(1+o(1)), U(y)=\frac{8}{(1+|y|^{2})^{2}},$$ with $λ_{j}(t) \approx 2e^{-\frac{γ+2}{2}}\sqrt{T-t}e^{-\sqrt{\frac{|\ln(T-t)|}{2}}} $ where $γ=0.57721...$ is the Euler-Mascheroni constant, $ξ_{j}(t)\to q_{j}\in \mathbb{R}^{2}$ and such that $\int_{\mathbb{R}^2}u(x,t)dx=km.$ This construction generalizes the existence result of the stable blow-up dynamics recently proved in \cite{CGMN1,CGMN2}.

Doubling the equatorial for the prescribed scalar curvature problem on ${\mathbb{S}}^N$

We consider the prescribed scalar curvature problem on $ {\mathbb{S}}^N $ $$ Δ_{{\mathbb S}^N} v-\frac{N(N-2)}{2} v+\tilde{K}(y) v^{\frac{N+2}{N-2}}=0 \quad \mbox{on} \ {\mathbb S}^N, \qquad v >0 \quad \mbox{on} \ {\mathbb S}^N, $$ under the assumptions that the scalar curvature $\tilde K$ is rotationally symmetric, and has a positive local maximum point between the poles. We prove the existence of infinitely many non-radial positive solutions, whose energy can be made arbitrarily large. These solutions are invariant under some non-trivial sub-group of $O(3)$ obtained doubling the equatorial. We use the finite dimensional Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction method.

Geometry driven Type II higher dimensional blow-up for the critical heat equation

We consider the problem v_t & = Δv+ |v|^{p-1}v \quad\hbox{in }\ Ω\times (0, T), v & =0 \quad\hbox{on } \partial Ω\times (0, T ) , v& >0 \quad\hbox{in }\ Ω\times (0, T) . In a domain $Ω\subset \mathbb R^d$, $d\ge 7$ enjoying special symmetries, we find the first example of a solution with type II blow-up for a power $p$ less than the Joseph-Lundgren exponent $$p_{JL}(d)=\infty, & \text{if $3\le d\le 10$}, 1+{4\over d-4-2\,\sqrt{d-1}}, & \text{if $d\ge11$}. $$ No type II radial blow-up is present for $p< p_{JL}(d)$. We take $p=\frac{d+1}{d-3}$, the Sobolev critical exponent in one dimension less. The solution blows up on circle contained in a negatively curved part of the boundary in the form of a sharply scaled Aubin-Talenti bubble, approaching its energy density a Dirac measure for the curve. This is a completely new phenomenon for a diffusion setting.

New type II Finite time blow-up for the energy supercritical heat equation

We consider the energy supercritical heat equation with the $(n-3)$-th Sobolev exponent \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} u_t=Δu+u^{3},~&\mbox{ in } Ω\times (0,T),\\ u(x,t)=u|_{\partialΩ},~&\mbox{ on } \partialΩ\times (0,T),\\ u(x,0)=u_0(x),~&\mbox{ in } Ω, \end{cases} \end{equation*} where $5\leq n\leq 7$, $Ω=\R^n$ or $Ω\subset \R^n$ is a smooth, bounded domain enjoying special symmetries. We construct type II finite time blow-up solution $u(x,t)$ with the singularity taking place along an $(n-4)$-dimensional {\em shrinking sphere} in $Ω$. More precisely, at leading order, the solution $u(x,t)$ is of the sharply scaled form $$u(x,t)\approx \la^{-1}(t)\frac{2\sqrt{2}}{1+\left|\frac{(r,z)-(ξ_r(t),ξ_z(t))}{\la(t)}\right|^2}$$ where $r=\sqrt{x_1^2+\cdots+x_{n-3}^2}$, $z=(x_{n-2},x_{n-1},x_n)$ with $x=(x_1,\cdots,x_n)\inΩ$. Moreover, the singularity location $$(ξ_r(t),ξ_z(t))\sim (\sqrt{2(n-4)(T-t)},z_0)~\mbox{ as }~t\nearrow T,$$ for some fixed $z_0$, and the blow-up rate $$\la(t)\sim \frac{T-t}{|\log(T-t)|^2}~\mbox{ as }~t\nearrow T.$$ This is a completely new phenomenon in the parabolic setting.

New type of solutions for the Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation in $\mathbb{R}^N$

We construct a new family of entire solutions for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation \begin{align*} \begin{cases} -Δu+ V(y ) u = u^p, \quad u>0, \quad \text{in}~ \mathbb{R}^N, \\[2mm] u \in H^1(\mathbb{R}^N), \end{cases} \end{align*} where $p\in (1, \frac{N+2}{N-2})$ and $N\geq 3$, and $V (y)= V(|y|)$ is a positive bounded radial potential satisfying $$ V(|y|) = V_0 + \frac{a}{|y|^m} + O( \frac{1}{|y|^{m+σ}} ), \quad {\mbox {as}} \quad |y| \to \infty , $$ for some fixed constants $V_0, a, σ>0$, and $m>1$. Our solutions have strong analogies with the doubling construction of entire finite energy sign-changing solution for the Yamabe equation.

Travelling and rotating solutions to the generalized inviscid surface quasi-geostrophic equation

For the generalized surface quasi-geostrophic equation $$\left\{ \begin{aligned} & \partial_t θ+u\cdot \nabla θ=0, \quad \text{in } \mathbb{R}^2 \times (0,T), \\ & u=\nabla^\perp ψ, \quad ψ= (-Δ)^{-s}θ\quad \text{in } \mathbb{R}^2 \times (0,T) , \end{aligned} \right. $$ $0<s<1$, we consider for $k\ge1$ the problem of finding a family of $k$-vortex solutions $θ_\varepsilon(x,t)$ such that as $\varepsilon\to 0$ $$ θ_\varepsilon(x,t) \rightharpoonup \sum_{j=1}^k m_jδ(x-ξ_j(t)) $$ for suitable trajectories for the vortices $x=ξ_j(t)$. We find such solutions in the special cases of vortices travelling with constant speed along one axis or rotating with same speed around the origin. In those cases the problem is reduced to a fractional elliptic equation which is treated with singular perturbation methods. A key element in our construction is a proof of the non-degeneracy of the radial ground state for the so-called fractional plasma problem $$(-Δ)^sW = (W-1)^γ_+, \quad \text{in } \mathbb{R}^2, \quad 1<γ< \frac{1+s}{1-s}$$ whose existence and uniqueness have recently been proven in \cite{chan_uniqueness_2020}.

Travelling helices and the vortex filament conjecture in the incompressible Euler equations

We consider the Euler equations in ${\mathbb R}^3$ expressed in vorticity form. A classical question that goes back to Helmholtz is to describe the evolution of solutions with a high concentration around a curve. The work of Da Rios in 1906 states that such a curve must evolve by the so-called binormal curvature flow. Existence of true solutions concentrated near a given curve that evolves by this law is a long-standing open question that has only been answered for the special case of a circle travelling with constant speed along its axis, the thin vortex-rings. We provide what appears to be the first rigorous construction of {\em helical filaments}, associated to a translating-rotating helix. The solution is defined at all times and does not change form with time. The result generalizes to multiple similar helical filaments travelling and rotating together.

Type II Finite time blow-up for the three dimensional energy critical heat equation

We consider the following Cauchy problem for three dimensional energy critical heat equation \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} u_t=Δu+u^{5},~&\mbox{ in } \ {\mathbb R}^3 \times (0,T),\\ u(x,0)=u_0(x),~&\mbox{ in } \ {\mathbb R}^3. \end{cases} \end{equation*} We construct type II finite time blow-up solution $u(x,t)$ with the blow-up rates $ \| u\|_{L^\infty} \sim (T-t)^{-k}$, where $ k=1,2,... $. This gives a rigorous proof of the formal computations by Filippas, Herrero and Velazquez \cite{fhv}. This is the first instance of type II finite time blow-up for three dimensional energy critical heat equation.

Infinite time blow-up for the 3-dimensional energy critical heat equation

We construct globally defined in time, unbounded positive solutions to the energy-critical heat equation in dimension three $$ u_t = Δu + u^5 , \quad {\mbox {in}} \quad \R^3 \times (0,\infty), \ \ u(x, 0)= u_0 (x)\inn \R^3. $$ For each $γ>1$ we find initial data (not necessarily radially symmetric) with $\lim\limits_{r \to \infty} |x|^γu_0 (x) >0$ such that as $t \to \infty$ $$ \| u(\cdot ,t ) \|_\infty \sim t^{γ-1 \over 2} , \quad {\mbox {if}} \quad 1<γ<2, \quad \| u(\cdot ,t ) \|_\infty \sim \sqrt{t}, \quad {\mbox {if}} \quad γ>2, \quad $$ and $$ \| u(\cdot , t)\|_\infty \sim \sqrt{t}\, (\ln t )^{-1} , \quad {\mbox {if}} \quad γ= 2. $$ Furthermore we show that this infinite time blow-up is co-dimensional one stable. The existence of such solutions was conjectured by Fila and King.

Interface dynamics in semilinear wave equations

We consider the wave equation $\varepsilon^2(-\partial_t^2 + Δ)u + f(u) = 0$ for $0<\varepsilon\ll 1$, where $f$ is the derivative of a balanced, double-well potential, the model case being $f(u) = u-u^3$. For equations of this form, we construct solutions that exhibit an interface of thickness $O(\varepsilon )$ that separates regions where the solution is $O(\varepsilon^k)$ close to $\pm 1$, and that is close to a timelike hypersurface of vanishing {\em Minkowskian} mean curvature. This provides a Minkowskian analog of the numerous results that connect the Euclidean Allen-Cahn equation and minimal surfaces or the parabolic Allen-Cahn equation and motion by mean curvature. Compared to earlier results of the same character, we develop a new constructive approach that applies to a larger class of nonlinearities and yields much more precise information about the solutions under consideration.

Green's function and infinite-time bubbling in the critical nonlinear heat equation

Let $Ω$ be a smooth bounded domain in $\R^n$, $n\ge 5$. We consider the semilinear heat equation at the critical Sobolev exponent $$ u_t = Δu + u^{\frac{n+2}{n-2}} \inn Ω\times (0,\infty), \quad u =0 \onn \ppΩ\times (0,\infty). $$ Let $G(x,y)$ be the Dirichlet Green's function of $-Δ$ in $Ω$ and $H(x,y)$ its regular part. Let $q_j\in Ω$, $j=1,\ldots,k$, be points such that the matrix $$ \left [ \begin{matrix} H(q_1, q_1) & -G(q_1,q_2) &\cdots & -G(q_1, q_k) -G(q_1,q_2) & H(q_2,q_2) & -G(q_2,q_3) \cdots & -G(q_3,q_k) \vdots & & \ddots& \vdots -G(q_1,q_k) &\cdots& -G(q_{k-1}, q_k) & H(q_k,q_k) \end{matrix} \right ] $$ is positive definite. For any $k\ge 1$ such points indeed exist. We prove the existence of a positive smooth solution $u(x,t)$ which blows-up by bubbling in infinite time near those points. More precisely, for large time $t$, $u$ takes the approximate form $$ u(x,t) \approx \sum_{j=1}^k α_n \left ( \frac { μ_j(t)} { μ_j(t)^2 + |x-ξ_j(t)|^2 } \right )^{\frac {n-2}2} . $$ Here $ξ_j(t) \to q_j$ and $0<μ_j(t) \to 0$, as $t \to \infty$. We find that $μ_j(t) \sim t^{-\frac 1{n-4}} $ as $t\to +\infty$, when $n\geq 5$.

New blow-up phenomena for SU(n+1) Toda system

We consider the $SU(n+1)$ Toda system $$(S_λ) \quad \left\{ \begin{aligned} & Δu_1 + 2λe^{u_1} - λe^{u_2}- \dots - λe^{u_k} = 0\quad \hbox{in}\ Ω,\\ & Δu_2 - λe^{u_1} + 2λe^{u_2} - \dots - λe^{u_k}=0\quad \hbox{in}\ Ω,\\ &\vdots \hskip3truecm \ddots \hskip2truecm \vdots\\ & Δu_k -λe^{u_1}-λe^{u_2}- \dots+2λe^{u_k}=0\quad \hbox{in}\ Ω, &u_1 = u_2 = \dots = u_k =0 \quad \hbox{on}\ \partialΩ.\\ \end{aligned}\right. $$ If $0\inΩ$ and $Ω$ is symmetric with respect to the origin, we construct a family of solutions $({u_1}_λ,\dots,{u_k}_λ)$ to $(S_λ)$ such that the $i-$th component ${u_i}_λ$ blows-up at the origin with a mass $2^{i+1}π$ as $λ$ goes to zero.

A non-compactness result on the fractional Yamabe problem in large dimensions

Let $(X^{n+1}, g^+)$ be an $(n+1)$-dimensional asymptotically hyperbolic manifold with a conformal infinity $(M^n, [\hat{h}])$. The fractional Yamabe problem addresses to solve \[P^γ[g^+,\hat{h}] (u) = cu^{n+2γ\over n-2γ}, \quad u > 0 \quad \text{on } M\] where $c \in \mathbb{R}$ and $P^γ[g^+,\hat{h}]$ is the fractional conformal Laplacian whose principal symbol is $(-Δ)^γ$. In this paper, we construct a metric on the half space $X = \mathbb{R}^{n+1}_+$, which is conformally equivalent to the unit ball, for which the solution set of the fractional Yamabe equation is non-compact provided that $n \ge 24$ for $γ\in (0, γ^*)$ and $n \ge 25$ for $γ\in [γ^*,1)$ where $γ^* \in (0, 1)$ is a certain transition exponent. The value of $γ^*$ turns out to be approximately 0.940197.

Nondegeneracy of nonradial sign-changing solutions to the nonlinear Schrödinger equations

We prove that the non-radial sign-changing solutions to the nonlinear Schrödinger equation \begin{equation*} Δu-u+|u|^{p-1}u=0 \mbox{ in }\R^N, \quad u \in H^1 (\R^N ) \end{equation*} constructed by Musso, Pacard and Wei is non-degenerate. This provides the first example of non-degenerate sign-changing solution with finite energy to the above nonlinear Schrödinger equation.

Sign-changing blowing-up solutions for supercritical Bahri-Coron's problem

Let $Ω$ be a bounded domain in $\R^n$, $n\ge 3$ with smooth boundary $\partialΩ$ and a small hole. We give the first example of sign-changing {\it bubbling} solutions to the nonlinear elliptic problem $$ -Δu=|u|^{{n+2\over n-2} +\ve -1 } u \, \, \mbox{ in } Ω, \quad \quad u=0 \mbox{ on } \partial Ω, $$ where $\ve$ is a small positive parameter. The basic cell in the construction is the sign-changing nodal solution to the critical Yamabe problem $$ -Δw = |w|^{\frac{4}{n-2}} w, \ \ w \in {\mathcal D}^{1,2} (\R^n) $$ which has large number ($3n$) of kernels.

Concentration on minimal submanifolds for a Yamabe type problem

We construct solutions to a Yamabe type problem on a Riemannian manifold M without boundary and of dimension greater than 2, with nonlinearity close to higher critical Sobolev exponents. These solutions concentrate their mass around a non degenerate minimal submanifold of M, provided a certain geometric condition involving the sectional curvatures is satisfied. A connection with the solution of a class of P.D.E.'s on the submanifold with a singular term of attractive or repulsive type is established.

Non-topological condensates for the self-dual Chern-Simons-Higgs model

For the abelian self-dual Chern-Simons-Higgs model we address existence issues of periodic vortex configurations -- the so-called condensates-- of non-topological type as $k \to 0$, where $k>0$ is the Chern-Simons parameter. We provide a positive answer to the long-standing problem on the existence of non-topological condensates with magnetic field concentrated at some of the vortex points (as a sum of Dirac measures) as $k \to 0$, a question which is of definite physical interest.

Bubbling on Boundary Submanifolds for the Lin-Ni-Takagi Problem at Higher Critical Exponents

We consider the equation $d^2Δu - u+ u^{\frac{n-k+2}{n-k-2}} =0\,\hbox{in}Ω$, under zero Neumann boundary conditions, where $Ω$ is open, smooth and bounded and $d$ is a small positive parameter. We assume that there is a $k$-dimensional closed, embedded minimal submanifold $K$ of $\partialΩ$, which is non-degenerate, and certain weighted average of sectional curvatures of $\partialΩ$ is positive along $K$. Then we prove the existence of a sequence $d=d_j\to 0$ and a positive solution $u_d$ such that $$ d^2 |\nabla u_{d} |^2 \rightharpoonup S, δ_K \ass d \to 0 $$ in the sense of measures, where $δ_K$ stands for the Dirac measure supported on $K$ and $S$ is a positive constant.
