Existence of finite time blow-up in Keller-Segel system

Perhaps the most classical diffusion model for chemotaxis is the Keller-Segel system $\begin{equation} \begin{cases} u_{t} =Δu - \nabla \cdot(u \nabla v) \ \ \ \text{in } \mathbb{R}^2\times(0,T),\\[5pt] v = (-Δ_{\mathbb{R}^2})^{-1} u := \displaystyle\frac {1}{2π} \displaystyle\int_{\mathbb{R}^2} \log \frac {1}{|x-z|}u(z,t) dz, \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ (\star)\\[5pt] u(\cdot ,0) = u_{0}^{\star} \ge 0 \ \ \ \text{in } \mathbb{R}^2. \end{cases} \end{equation}$ We show that there exists $\varepsilon>0$ such that for any $m$ satisfying $8π<m\le 8π+\varepsilon$ and any $k$ given points $q_{1},...,q_{k}$ in $\mathbb{R}^{2}$ there is an initial data $u_0^*$ of $(\star)$ for which the solution $u(x,t)$ blows-up in finite time as $t\to T$ with the approximate profile $$u(x,t)=\sum_{j=1}^{k}\frac{1}{λ_{j}^{2}(t)}U\left(\frac{x-ξ_{j}(t)}{λ_{j}(t)}\right)(1+o(1)), U(y)=\frac{8}{(1+|y|^{2})^{2}},$$ with $λ_{j}(t) \approx 2e^{-\frac{γ+2}{2}}\sqrt{T-t}e^{-\sqrt{\frac{|\ln(T-t)|}{2}}} $ where $γ=0.57721...$ is the Euler-Mascheroni constant, $ξ_{j}(t)\to q_{j}\in \mathbb{R}^{2}$ and such that $\int_{\mathbb{R}^2}u(x,t)dx=km.$ This construction generalizes the existence result of the stable blow-up dynamics recently proved in \cite{CGMN1,CGMN2}.

Geometry driven Type II higher dimensional blow-up for the critical heat equation

We consider the problem v_t & = Δv+ |v|^{p-1}v \quad\hbox{in }\ Ω\times (0, T), v & =0 \quad\hbox{on } \partial Ω\times (0, T ) , v& >0 \quad\hbox{in }\ Ω\times (0, T) . In a domain $Ω\subset \mathbb R^d$, $d\ge 7$ enjoying special symmetries, we find the first example of a solution with type II blow-up for a power $p$ less than the Joseph-Lundgren exponent $$p_{JL}(d)=\infty, & \text{if $3\le d\le 10$}, 1+{4\over d-4-2\,\sqrt{d-1}}, & \text{if $d\ge11$}. $$ No type II radial blow-up is present for $p< p_{JL}(d)$. We take $p=\frac{d+1}{d-3}$, the Sobolev critical exponent in one dimension less. The solution blows up on circle contained in a negatively curved part of the boundary in the form of a sharply scaled Aubin-Talenti bubble, approaching its energy density a Dirac measure for the curve. This is a completely new phenomenon for a diffusion setting.

New type II Finite time blow-up for the energy supercritical heat equation

We consider the energy supercritical heat equation with the $(n-3)$-th Sobolev exponent \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} u_t=Δu+u^{3},~&\mbox{ in } Ω\times (0,T),\\ u(x,t)=u|_{\partialΩ},~&\mbox{ on } \partialΩ\times (0,T),\\ u(x,0)=u_0(x),~&\mbox{ in } Ω, \end{cases} \end{equation*} where $5\leq n\leq 7$, $Ω=\R^n$ or $Ω\subset \R^n$ is a smooth, bounded domain enjoying special symmetries. We construct type II finite time blow-up solution $u(x,t)$ with the singularity taking place along an $(n-4)$-dimensional {\em shrinking sphere} in $Ω$. More precisely, at leading order, the solution $u(x,t)$ is of the sharply scaled form $$u(x,t)\approx \la^{-1}(t)\frac{2\sqrt{2}}{1+\left|\frac{(r,z)-(ξ_r(t),ξ_z(t))}{\la(t)}\right|^2}$$ where $r=\sqrt{x_1^2+\cdots+x_{n-3}^2}$, $z=(x_{n-2},x_{n-1},x_n)$ with $x=(x_1,\cdots,x_n)\inΩ$. Moreover, the singularity location $$(ξ_r(t),ξ_z(t))\sim (\sqrt{2(n-4)(T-t)},z_0)~\mbox{ as }~t\nearrow T,$$ for some fixed $z_0$, and the blow-up rate $$\la(t)\sim \frac{T-t}{|\log(T-t)|^2}~\mbox{ as }~t\nearrow T.$$ This is a completely new phenomenon in the parabolic setting.

Travelling and rotating solutions to the generalized inviscid surface quasi-geostrophic equation

For the generalized surface quasi-geostrophic equation $$\left\{ \begin{aligned} & \partial_t θ+u\cdot \nabla θ=0, \quad \text{in } \mathbb{R}^2 \times (0,T), \\ & u=\nabla^\perp ψ, \quad ψ= (-Δ)^{-s}θ\quad \text{in } \mathbb{R}^2 \times (0,T) , \end{aligned} \right. $$ $0<s<1$, we consider for $k\ge1$ the problem of finding a family of $k$-vortex solutions $θ_\varepsilon(x,t)$ such that as $\varepsilon\to 0$ $$ θ_\varepsilon(x,t) \rightharpoonup \sum_{j=1}^k m_jδ(x-ξ_j(t)) $$ for suitable trajectories for the vortices $x=ξ_j(t)$. We find such solutions in the special cases of vortices travelling with constant speed along one axis or rotating with same speed around the origin. In those cases the problem is reduced to a fractional elliptic equation which is treated with singular perturbation methods. A key element in our construction is a proof of the non-degeneracy of the radial ground state for the so-called fractional plasma problem $$(-Δ)^sW = (W-1)^γ_+, \quad \text{in } \mathbb{R}^2, \quad 1<γ< \frac{1+s}{1-s}$$ whose existence and uniqueness have recently been proven in \cite{chan_uniqueness_2020}.

Travelling helices and the vortex filament conjecture in the incompressible Euler equations

We consider the Euler equations in ${\mathbb R}^3$ expressed in vorticity form. A classical question that goes back to Helmholtz is to describe the evolution of solutions with a high concentration around a curve. The work of Da Rios in 1906 states that such a curve must evolve by the so-called binormal curvature flow. Existence of true solutions concentrated near a given curve that evolves by this law is a long-standing open question that has only been answered for the special case of a circle travelling with constant speed along its axis, the thin vortex-rings. We provide what appears to be the first rigorous construction of {\em helical filaments}, associated to a translating-rotating helix. The solution is defined at all times and does not change form with time. The result generalizes to multiple similar helical filaments travelling and rotating together.

Type II Finite time blow-up for the three dimensional energy critical heat equation

We consider the following Cauchy problem for three dimensional energy critical heat equation \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} u_t=Δu+u^{5},~&\mbox{ in } \ {\mathbb R}^3 \times (0,T),\\ u(x,0)=u_0(x),~&\mbox{ in } \ {\mathbb R}^3. \end{cases} \end{equation*} We construct type II finite time blow-up solution $u(x,t)$ with the blow-up rates $ \| u\|_{L^\infty} \sim (T-t)^{-k}$, where $ k=1,2,... $. This gives a rigorous proof of the formal computations by Filippas, Herrero and Velazquez \cite{fhv}. This is the first instance of type II finite time blow-up for three dimensional energy critical heat equation.

Long-time asymptotics for evolutionary crystal dislocation models

We consider a family of evolution equations that generalize the Peierls-Nabarro model for crystal dislocations. They can be seen as semilinear parabolic reaction-diffusion equations in which the diffusion is regulated by a fractional Laplace operator of order $2 s \in (0, 2)$ acting in one space dimension and the reaction is determined by a $1$-periodic multi-well potential. We construct solutions of these equations that represent the typical propagation of $N \ge 2$ equally oriented dislocations of size $1$. For large times, the dislocations occur around points that evolve according to a repulsive dynamical system. When $s \in (1/2, 1)$, these solutions are shown to be asymptotically stable with respect to odd perturbations.

Infinite time blow-up for the 3-dimensional energy critical heat equation

We construct globally defined in time, unbounded positive solutions to the energy-critical heat equation in dimension three $$ u_t = Δu + u^5 , \quad {\mbox {in}} \quad \R^3 \times (0,\infty), \ \ u(x, 0)= u_0 (x)\inn \R^3. $$ For each $γ>1$ we find initial data (not necessarily radially symmetric) with $\lim\limits_{r \to \infty} |x|^γu_0 (x) >0$ such that as $t \to \infty$ $$ \| u(\cdot ,t ) \|_\infty \sim t^{γ-1 \over 2} , \quad {\mbox {if}} \quad 1<γ<2, \quad \| u(\cdot ,t ) \|_\infty \sim \sqrt{t}, \quad {\mbox {if}} \quad γ>2, \quad $$ and $$ \| u(\cdot , t)\|_\infty \sim \sqrt{t}\, (\ln t )^{-1} , \quad {\mbox {if}} \quad γ= 2. $$ Furthermore we show that this infinite time blow-up is co-dimensional one stable. The existence of such solutions was conjectured by Fila and King.

Interface dynamics in semilinear wave equations

We consider the wave equation $\varepsilon^2(-\partial_t^2 + Δ)u + f(u) = 0$ for $0<\varepsilon\ll 1$, where $f$ is the derivative of a balanced, double-well potential, the model case being $f(u) = u-u^3$. For equations of this form, we construct solutions that exhibit an interface of thickness $O(\varepsilon )$ that separates regions where the solution is $O(\varepsilon^k)$ close to $\pm 1$, and that is close to a timelike hypersurface of vanishing {\em Minkowskian} mean curvature. This provides a Minkowskian analog of the numerous results that connect the Euclidean Allen-Cahn equation and minimal surfaces or the parabolic Allen-Cahn equation and motion by mean curvature. Compared to earlier results of the same character, we develop a new constructive approach that applies to a larger class of nonlinearities and yields much more precise information about the solutions under consideration.

Green's function and infinite-time bubbling in the critical nonlinear heat equation

Let $Ω$ be a smooth bounded domain in $\R^n$, $n\ge 5$. We consider the semilinear heat equation at the critical Sobolev exponent $$ u_t = Δu + u^{\frac{n+2}{n-2}} \inn Ω\times (0,\infty), \quad u =0 \onn \ppΩ\times (0,\infty). $$ Let $G(x,y)$ be the Dirichlet Green's function of $-Δ$ in $Ω$ and $H(x,y)$ its regular part. Let $q_j\in Ω$, $j=1,\ldots,k$, be points such that the matrix $$ \left [ \begin{matrix} H(q_1, q_1) & -G(q_1,q_2) &\cdots & -G(q_1, q_k) -G(q_1,q_2) & H(q_2,q_2) & -G(q_2,q_3) \cdots & -G(q_3,q_k) \vdots & & \ddots& \vdots -G(q_1,q_k) &\cdots& -G(q_{k-1}, q_k) & H(q_k,q_k) \end{matrix} \right ] $$ is positive definite. For any $k\ge 1$ such points indeed exist. We prove the existence of a positive smooth solution $u(x,t)$ which blows-up by bubbling in infinite time near those points. More precisely, for large time $t$, $u$ takes the approximate form $$ u(x,t) \approx \sum_{j=1}^k α_n \left ( \frac { μ_j(t)} { μ_j(t)^2 + |x-ξ_j(t)|^2 } \right )^{\frac {n-2}2} . $$ Here $ξ_j(t) \to q_j$ and $0<μ_j(t) \to 0$, as $t \to \infty$. We find that $μ_j(t) \sim t^{-\frac 1{n-4}} $ as $t\to +\infty$, when $n\geq 5$.

Large mass boundary condensation patterns in the stationary Keller-Segel system

We consider the boundary value problem $-Δu + u =λe^u$ in $Ω$ with Neumann boundary condition, where $Ω$ is a bounded smooth domain in $\mathbb R^2$, $λ>0.$ This problem is equivalent to the stationary Keller-Segel system from chemotaxis. We establish the existence of a solution $u_λ$ which exhibits a sharp boundary layer along the entire boundary $\partialΩ$ as $λ\to 0$. These solutions have large mass in the sense that $ \int_Ωλe^{u_λ} \sim |\logλ|.$

Catenoidal layers for the Allen-Cahn equation in bounded domains

In this paper we present a new family of solutions to the singularly perturbed Allen-Cahn equation $α^2 Δu + u(1-u^2)=0, \quad \hbox{in }Ω\subset \R^N $ where $N=3$, $Ω$ is a smooth bounded domain and $\A>0$ is a small parameter. We provide asymptotic behavior which shows that, as $α\to 0$, the level sets of the solutions collapse onto a bounded portion of a complete embedded minimal surface with finite total curvature that intersects orthogonally $\partial Ω$ of the domain and that is non-degenerate respect to $Ω$. We provide explicit examples of surfaces to which our result applies.

Finite topology self-translating surfaces for the mean curvature flow in $\mathbb R^3$

Finite topology self translating surfaces to mean curvature flow of surfaces constitute a key element for the analysis of Type II singularities from a compact surface, since they arise in a limit after suitable blow-up scalings around the singularity. We find in $\mathbb R^3$ a surface $M$ orientable, embedded and complete with finite topology (and large genus) with three ends asymptotically paraboloidal, such that the moving surface $Σ(t) = M + te_z$ evolves by mean curvature flow. This amounts to the equation $H_M = ν\cdot e_z$ where $H_M$ denotes mean curvature, $ν$ is a choice of unit normal to $M$, and $e_z$ is a unit vector along the $z$-axis. The surface $M$ is in correspondence with the classical 3-end Costa-Hoffmann-Meeks minimal surface with large genus, which has two asymptotically catenoidal ends and one planar end, and a long array of small tunnels in the intersection region resembling a periodic Scherk surface. This example is the first non-trivial one of its kind, and it suggests a strong connection between this problem and the theory of embedded, complete minimal surfaces with finite total curvature.

Nonlocal Delaunay surfaces

We construct codimension 1 surfaces of any dimension that minimize a periodic nonlocal perimeter functional among surfaces that are periodic, cylindrically symmetric and decreasing. These surfaces may be seen as a nonlocal analogue of the classical Delaunay surfaces (onduloids). For small volume, most of their mass tends to be concentrated in a periodic array and the surfaces are close to a periodic array of balls (in fact, we give explicit quantitative bounds on these facts).

Concentration phenomena for the nonlocal Schrödinger equation with Dirichlet datum

For a smooth, bounded domain $Ω$, $s\in(0,1)$, $p\in \left(1,\frac{n+2s}{n-2s}\right)$ we consider the nonlocal equation $$ ε^{2s} (-Δ)^s u+u=u^p \quad {\mbox{in}}Ω$$ with zero Dirichlet datum and a small parameter $ε>0$. We construct a family of solutions that concentrate as $ε\to 0$ at an interior point of the domain in the form of a scaling of the ground state in entire space. Unlike the classical case $s=1$, the leading order of the associated reduced energy functional in a variational reduction procedure is of polynomial instead of exponential order on the distance from the boundary, due to the nonlocal effect. Delicate analysis is needed to overcome the lack of localization, in particular establishing the rather unexpected asymptotics for the Green function of $ ε^{2s} (-Δ)^s +1$ in the expanding domain $ε^{-1}Ω$ with zero exterior datum.

Non-topological condensates for the self-dual Chern-Simons-Higgs model

For the abelian self-dual Chern-Simons-Higgs model we address existence issues of periodic vortex configurations -- the so-called condensates-- of non-topological type as $k \to 0$, where $k>0$ is the Chern-Simons parameter. We provide a positive answer to the long-standing problem on the existence of non-topological condensates with magnetic field concentrated at some of the vortex points (as a sum of Dirac measures) as $k \to 0$, a question which is of definite physical interest.

Nonlocal $s$-minimal surfaces and Lawson cones

The nonlocal $s$-fractional minimal surface equation for $Σ= \partial E$ where $E$ is an open set in $R^N$ is given by $$ H_Σ^ s (p) := \int_{R^N} \frac {χ_E(x) - χ_{E^c}(x)} {|x-p|^{N+s}}\, dx \ =\ 0 \quad \text{for all } p\in Σ. $$ Here $0<s<1$, $χ$ designates characteristic function, and the integral is understood in the principal value sense. The classical notion of minimal surface is recovered by letting $s\to 1$. In this paper we exhibit the first concrete examples (beyond the plane) of nonlocal $s-$minimal surfaces. When $s$ is close to $1$, we first construct a connected embedded $s$-minimal surface of revolution in $R^3$, the {\bf nonlocal catenoid}, an analog of the standard catenoid $|x_3| = \log (r + \sqrt{r^2 -1})$. Rather than eventual logarithmic growth, this surface becomes asymptotic to the cone $|x_3|= r\sqrt{1-s}$. We also find a two-sheet embedded $s$-minimal surface asymptotic to the same cone, an analog to the simple union of two parallel planes. On the other hand, for any $0<s<1$, $n,m\ge 1$, $s-$minimal Lawson cones $|v|=α|u|$, $(u,v)\in R^n\times R^m$, are found to exist. In sharp contrast with the classical case, we prove their stability for small $s$ and $n+m=7$, which suggests that unlike the classical theory (or the case $s$ close to 1), the regularity of $s$-area minimizing surfaces may not hold true in dimension $7$.

Bubbling on Boundary Submanifolds for the Lin-Ni-Takagi Problem at Higher Critical Exponents

We consider the equation $d^2Δu - u+ u^{\frac{n-k+2}{n-k-2}} =0\,\hbox{in}Ω$, under zero Neumann boundary conditions, where $Ω$ is open, smooth and bounded and $d$ is a small positive parameter. We assume that there is a $k$-dimensional closed, embedded minimal submanifold $K$ of $\partialΩ$, which is non-degenerate, and certain weighted average of sectional curvatures of $\partialΩ$ is positive along $K$. Then we prove the existence of a sequence $d=d_j\to 0$ and a positive solution $u_d$ such that $$ d^2 |\nabla u_{d} |^2 \rightharpoonup S, δ_K \ass d \to 0 $$ in the sense of measures, where $δ_K$ stands for the Dirac measure supported on $K$ and $S$ is a positive constant.

Concentrating standing waves for the fractional nonlinear Schrödinger equation

We consider the semilinear equation $$ ε^{2s} (-Δ)^s u + V(x)u - u^p = 0, \quad u>0, \quad u\in H^{2s}(\R^N) $$ where $0<s<1,\ 1<p<\frac{N+2s}{N-2s}$, $ V(x)$ is a sufficiently smooth potential with $\inf_\R V(x)> 0$, and $ε>0$ is a small number. Letting $w_λ$ be the radial ground state of $(-Δ)^s w_λ+ λw_λ- w_λ^p=0$ in $H^{2s}(\R^N)$, we build solutions of the form $$ u_ε(x) \sim \sum_{i=1}^k w_{λ_i} ((x-ξ_i^ε)/ε),$$ where $λ_i = V(ξ_i^ε)$ and the $ξ_i^ε$ approach suitable critical points of $V$. Via a Lyapunov Schmidt variational reduction, we recover various existence results already known for the case $s=1$. In particular such a solution exists around $k$ nondegenerate critical points of $V$. For $s=1$ this corresponds to the classical results by Floer-Weinstein and Oh.

Infinitely many positive solutions of nonlinear Schrödinger equations with non-symmetric potentials

We consider the standing-wave problem for a nonlinear Schrödinger equation, corresponding to the semilinear elliptic problem \begin{equation*} -Δu+V(x)u=|u|^{p-1}u,\ u\in H^1(\mathbb{R}^2), \end{equation*} where $V(x)$ is a uniformly positive potential and $p>1$. Assuming that \begin{equation*} V(x)=V_\infty+\frac{a}{|x|^m}+O\Big(\frac{1}{|x|^{m+σ}}\Big),\ \text{as}\ |x|\rightarrow+\infty, %\tag{$V2$} \end{equation*} for instance if $p>2$, $m>2$ and $σ>1$ we prove the existence of infinitely many positive solutions. If $V(x)$ is radially symmetric, this result was proved in \cite{WY-10}. The proof without symmetries is much more difficult, and for that we develop a new {\em intermediate Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction method}, which is a compromise between the finite and infinite dimensional versions of it.

Serrin's Overdetermined Problem and Constant Mean Curvature Surfaces

For all $N \geq 9$, we find smooth entire epigraphs in $\R^N$, namely smooth domains of the form $Ω: = \{x\in \R^N\ / \ x_N > F (x_1,\ldots, x_{N-1})\}$, which are not half-spaces and in which a problem of the form $Δu + f(u) = 0 $ in $Ω$ has a positive, bounded solution with 0 Dirichlet boundary data and constant Neumann boundary data on $\partial Ω$. This answers negatively for large dimensions a question by Berestycki, Caffarelli and Nirenberg \cite{bcn2}. In 1971, Serrin \cite{serrin} proved that a bounded domain where such an overdetermined problem is solvable must be a ball, in analogy to a famous result by Alexandrov that states that an embedded compact surface with constant mean curvature (CMC) in Euclidean space must be a sphere. In lower dimensions we succeed in providing examples for domains whose boundary is close to large dilations of a given CMC surface where Serrin's overdetermined problem is solvable.

The Euclidean Onofri inequality in higher dimensions

The classical Onofri inequality in the two-dimensional sphere assumes a natural form in the plane when transformed via stereographic projection. We establish an optimal version of a generalization of this inequality in the d-dimensional Euclidean space for any d\geq2, by considering the endpoint of a family of optimal Gagliardo-Nirenberg interpolation inequalities. Unlike the two-dimensional case, this extension involves a rather unexpected Sobolev-Orlicz norm, as well as a probability measure no longer related to stereographic projection.

Type II ancient compact solutions to the Yamabe flow

We construct new type II ancient compact solutions to the Yamabe flow. Our solutions are rotationally symmetric and converge, as $t \to -\infty$, to a tower of two spheres. Their curvature operator changes sign. We allow two time-dependent parameters in our ansatz. We use perturbation theory, via fixed point arguments, based on sharp estimates on ancient solutions of the approximated linear equation and careful estimation of the error terms which allow us to make the right choice of parameters. Our technique may be viewed as a parabolic analogue of gluing two exact solutions to the rescaled equation, that is the spheres, with narrow cylindrical necks to obtain a new ancient solution to the Yamabe flow. The techniques in this article may be generalized to the gluing of $n$ spheres.

Interface Foliation Near Minimal Submanifolds in Riemannian Manifolds with Positive Ricci Curvature

Let $(\MM ,{\tilde g})$ be an $N$-dimensional smooth compact Riemannian manifold. Let $\KK\subset \MM$ be an $(N-1)$-dimensional smooth minimal submanifold that separates $\MM$ into two disjoint components. Assume that $\KK$ is non-degenerate in the sense that it does not support non-trivial Jacobi fields, and that $|A_{\KK}|^2+\mbox{Ric}_{\tilde g}(ν_{\KK}, ν_{\KK})$ is positive along $\KK$. Then for each integer $m\geq 2$, we establish the existence of a sequence $ε= ε_j\to 0$, and solutions $u_ε$ with $m$-transition layers near $\KK$, with mutual distance $O(ε|\ln ε|)$.

Relative equilibria in continuous stellar dynamics

We study a three dimensional continuous model of gravitating matter rotating at constant angular velocity. In the rotating reference frame, by a finite dimensional reduction, we prove the existence of non radial stationary solutions whose supports are made of an arbitrarily large number of disjoint compact sets, in the low angular velocity and large scale limit. At first order, the solutions behave like point particles, thus making the link with the relative equilibria} in N-body dynamics.
