Measurement of cosmogenic $^9$Li and $^8$He production rates at RENO

We report the measured production rates of unstable isotopes $^9$Li and $^8$He produced by cosmic muon spallation on $^{12}$C using two identical detectors of the RENO experiment. Their beta-decays accompanied by a neutron make a significant contribution to backgrounds of reactor antineutrino events in precise determination of the smallest neutrino mixing angle. The mean muon energy of its near (far) detector with an overburden of 120 (450) m.w.e. is estimated as 33.1 +- 2.3 (73.6 +- 4.4) GeV. Based on roughly 3100 days of data, the cosmogenic production rate of $^9$Li ($^8$He) isotope is measured to be 44.2 +- 3.1 (10.6 +- 7.4) per day at near detector and 10.0 +- 1.1 (2.1 +- 1.5) per day at far detector. This corresponds to yields of $^9$Li ($^8$He), 4.80 +- 0.36 (1.15 +- 0.81) and 9.9 +- 1.1 (2.1 +- 1.5) at near and far detectors, respectively, in a unit of 10$^{-8}$ $μ^{-1}$ g${^-1}$ cm${^2}$. Combining the measured $^9$Li yields with other available underground measurements, an excellent power-law relationship of the yield with respect to the mean muon energy is found to have an exponent of $α$ = 0.75 +- 0.05.

Search for Spatial Correlations of Neutrinos with Ultra-High-Energy Cosmic Rays

For several decades, the origin of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) has been an unsolved question of high-energy astrophysics. One approach for solving this puzzle is to correlate UHECRs with high-energy neutrinos, since neutrinos are a direct probe of hadronic interactions of cosmic rays and are not deflected by magnetic fields. In this paper, we present three different approaches for correlating the arrival directions of neutrinos with the arrival directions of UHECRs. The neutrino data is provided by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and ANTARES, while the UHECR data with energies above $\sim$50 EeV is provided by the Pierre Auger Observatory and the Telescope Array. All experiments provide increased statistics and improved reconstructions with respect to our previous results reported in 2015. The first analysis uses a high-statistics neutrino sample optimized for point-source searches to search for excesses of neutrinos clustering in the vicinity of UHECR directions. The second analysis searches for an excess of UHECRs in the direction of the highest-energy neutrinos. The third analysis searches for an excess of pairs of UHECRs and highest-energy neutrinos on different angular scales. None of the analyses has found a significant excess, and previously reported over-fluctuations are reduced in significance. Based on these results, we further constrain the neutrino flux spatially correlated with UHECRs.

Search for sterile neutrino oscillation using RENO and NEOS data

We present a reactor model independent search for sterile neutrino oscillation using 2\,509\,days of RENO near detector data and 180 days of NEOS data. The reactor related systematic uncertainties are significantly suppressed as both detectors are located at the same reactor complex of Hanbit Nuclear Power Plant. The search is performed by electron antineutrino\,($\overlineν_e$) disappearance between six reactors and two detectors with baselines of 294\,m\,(RENO) and 24\,m\,(NEOS). A spectral comparison of the NEOS prompt-energy spectrum with a no-oscillation prediction from the RENO measurement can explore reactor $\overlineν_e$ oscillations to sterile neutrino. Based on the comparison, we obtain a 95\% C.L. excluded region of $0.1<|Δm_{41}^2|<7$\,eV$^2$. We also obtain a 68\% C.L. allowed region with the best fit of $|Δm_{41}^2|=2.41\,\pm\,0.03\,$\,eV$^2$ and $\sin^2 2θ_{14}$=0.08$\,\pm\,$0.03 with a p-value of 8.2\%. Comparisons of obtained reactor antineutrino spectra at reactor sources are made among RENO, NEOS, and Daya Bay to find a possible spectral variation.

Observation of Variations in Cosmic Ray Single Count Rates During Thunderstorms and Implications for Large-Scale Electric Field Changes

We present the first observation by the Telescope Array Surface Detector (TASD) of the effect of thunderstorms on the development of cosmic ray single count rate intensity over a 700 km$^{2}$ area. Observations of variations in the secondary low-energy cosmic ray counting rate, using the TASD, allow us to study the electric field inside thunderstorms, on a large scale, as it progresses on top of the 700 km$^{2}$ detector, without dealing with the limitation of narrow exposure in time and space using balloons and aircraft detectors. In this work, variations in the cosmic ray intensity (single count rate) using the TASD, were studied and found to be on average at the $\sim(0.5-1)\%$ and up to 2\% level. These observations were found to be both in excess and in deficit. They were also found to be correlated with lightning in addition to thunderstorms. These variations lasted for tens of minutes; their footprint on the ground ranged from 6 to 24 km in diameter and moved in the same direction as the thunderstorm. With the use of simple electric field models inside the cloud and between cloud to ground, the observed variations in the cosmic ray single count rate were recreated using CORSIKA simulations. Depending on the electric field model used and the direction of the electric field in that model, the electric field magnitude that reproduces the observed low-energy cosmic ray single count rate variations was found to be approximately between 0.2-0.4 GV. This in turn allows us to get a reasonable insight on the electric field and its effect on cosmic ray air showers inside thunderstorms.

Evidence for a Supergalactic Structure of Magnetic Deflection Multiplets of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays

Evidence for a large-scale supergalactic cosmic ray multiplet (arrival directions correlated with energy) structure is reported for ultra-high energy cosmic ray (UHECR) energies above 10$^{19}$ eV using seven years of data from the Telescope Array (TA) surface detector and updated to 10 years. Previous energy-position correlation studies have made assumptions regarding magnetic field shapes and strength, and UHECR composition. Here the assumption tested is that, since the supergalactic plane is a fit to the average matter density of the local Large Scale Structure (LSS), UHECR sources and intervening extragalactic magnetic fields are correlated with this plane. This supergalactic deflection hypothesis is tested by the entire field-of-view (FOV) behavior of the strength of intermediate-scale energy-angle correlations. These multiplets are measured in spherical cap section bins (wedges) of the FOV to account for coherent and random magnetic fields. The structure found is consistent with supergalactic deflection, the previously published energy spectrum anisotropy results of TA (the hotspot and coldspot), and toy-model simulations of a supergalactic magnetic sheet. The seven year data post-trial significance of this supergalactic structure of multiplets appearing by chance, on an isotropic sky, is found by Monte Carlo simulation to be 4.2$σ$. The ten years of data post-trial significance is 4.1$σ$. Furthermore, the starburst galaxy M82 is shown to be a possible source of the TA Hotspot, and an estimate of the supergalactic magnetic field using UHECR measurements is presented.

Measurement of the Proton-Air Cross Section with Telescope Array's Black Rock Mesa and Long Ridge Fluorescence Detectors, and Surface Array in Hybrid Mode

Ultra high energy cosmic rays provide the highest known energy source in the universe to measure proton cross sections. Though conditions for collecting such data are less controlled than an accelerator environment, current generation cosmic ray observatories have large enough exposures to collect significant statistics for a reliable measurement for energies above what can be attained in the lab. Cosmic ray measurements of cross section use atmospheric calorimetry to measure depth of air shower maximum ($X_{\mathrm{max}}$), which is related to the primary particle's energy and mass. The tail of the $X_{\mathrm{max}}$ distribution is assumed to be dominated by showers generated by protons, allowing measurement of the inelastic proton-air cross section. In this work the proton-air inelastic cross section measurement, $σ^{\mathrm{inel}}_{\mathrm{p-air}}$, using data observed by Telescope Array's Black Rock Mesa and Long Ridge fluorescence detectors and surface detector array in hybrid mode is presented. $σ^{\mathrm{inel}}_{\mathrm{p-air}}$ is observed to be $520.1 \pm 35.8$[Stat.] $^{+25.0}_{-40}$[Sys.]~mb at $\sqrt{s} = 73$ TeV. The total proton-proton cross section is subsequently inferred from Glauber formalism and is found to be $σ^{\mathrm{tot}}_{\mathrm{pp}} = 139.4 ^{+23.4}_{-21.3}$ [Stat.]$ ^{+15.0}_{-24.0}$[Sys.]~mb.

Observations of the Origin of Downward Terrestrial Gamma-Ray Flashes

In this paper we report the first close, high-resolution observations of downward-directed terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs) detected by the large-area Telescope Array cosmic ray observatory, obtained in conjunction with broadband VHF interferometer and fast electric field change measurements of the parent discharge. The results show that the TGFs occur during strong initial breakdown pulses (IBPs) in the first few milliseconds of negative cloud-to-ground and low-altitude intracloud flashes, and that the IBPs are produced by a newly-identified streamer-based discharge process called fast negative breakdown. The observations indicate the relativistic runaway electron avalanches (RREAs) responsible for producing the TGFs are initiated by embedded spark-like transient conducting events (TCEs) within the fast streamer system, and potentially also by individual fast streamers themselves. The TCEs are inferred to be the cause of impulsive sub-pulses that are characteristic features of classic IBP sferics. Additional development of the avalanches would be facilitated by the enhanced electric field ahead of the advancing front of the fast negative breakdown. In addition to showing the nature of IBPs and their enigmatic sub-pulses, the observations also provide a possible explanation for the unsolved question of how the streamer to leader transition occurs during the initial negative breakdown, namely as a result of strong currents flowing in the final stage of successive IBPs, extending backward through both the IBP itself and the negative streamer breakdown preceding the IBP.

Possible quantum paramagnetism in compressed Sr$_2$IrO$_4$

The effect of compression on the magnetic ground state of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ is studied with x-ray resonant techniques in the diamond anvil cell. The weak interlayer exchange coupling between square-planar 2D IrO$_2$ layers is readily modified upon compression, with a crossover between magnetic structures around 7 GPa mimicking the effect of an applied magnetic field at ambient pressure. Higher pressures drive an order-disorder magnetic phase transition with no magnetic order detected above 17-20 GPa. The persistence of strong exchange interactions between $\mathrm{J_{eff}}=1/2$ magnetic moments within the insulating IrO$_2$ layers up to at least 35 GPa points to a highly frustrated magnetic state in compressed Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ opening the door for realization of novel quantum paramagnetic phases driven by extended $5d$ orbitals with entangled spin and orbital degrees of freedom.

Search for Large-scale Anisotropy on Arrival Directions of Ultra-high-energy Cosmic Rays Observed with the Telescope Array Experiment

Motivated by the detection of a significant dipole structure in the arrival directions of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays above 8 EeV reported by the Pierre Auger Observatory (Auger), we search for a large-scale anisotropy using data collected with the surface detector array of the Telescope Array Experiment (TA). With 11 years of TA data, a dipole structure in a projection of the right ascension is fitted with an amplitude of 3.3+- 1.9% and a phase of 131 +- 33 degrees. The corresponding 99% confidence-level upper limit on the amplitude is 7.3%. At the current level of statistics, the fitted result is compatible with both an isotropic distribution and the dipole structure reported by Auger.

Search for point sources of ultra-high energy photons with the Telescope Array surface detector

The surface detector (SD) of the Telescope Array (TA) experiment allows one to indirectly detect photons with energies of order $10^{18}$ eV and higher and to separate photons from the cosmic-ray background. In this paper we present the results of a blind search for point sources of ultra-high energy (UHE) photons in the Northern sky using the TA SD data. The photon-induced extensive air showers (EAS) are separated from the hadron-induced EAS background by means of a multivariate classifier based upon 16 parameters that characterize the air shower events. No significant evidence for the photon point sources is found. The upper limits are set on the flux of photons from each particular direction in the sky within the TA field of view, according to the experiment's angular resolution for photons. Average 95% C.L. upper limits for the point-source flux of photons with energies greater than $10^{18}$, $10^{18.5}$, $10^{19}$, $10^{19.5}$ and $10^{20}$ eV are $0.094$, $0.029$, $0.010$, $0.0073$ and $0.0058$ km$^{-2}$yr$^{-1}$ respectively. For the energies higher than $10^{18.5}$ eV, the photon point-source limits are set for the first time. Numerical results for each given direction in each energy range are provided as a supplement to this paper.

The radial distribution of supernovae compared to star formation tracers

Given the limited availability of direct evidence (pre-explosion observations) for supernova (SN) progenitors, the location of supernovae (SNe) within their host galaxies can be used to set limits on one of their most fundamental characteristics, their initial progenitor mass. We present our constraints on SN progenitors derived by comparing the radial distributions of 80 SNe in the SINGG and SUNGG surveys to the R-band, Halpha, and UV light distributions of the 55 host galaxies. The strong correlation of Type Ia SNe with R-band light is consistent with models containing only low mass progenitors, reflecting earlier findings. When we limit the analysis of Type II SNe to apertures containing 90 per cent of the total flux, the radial distribution of these SNe best traces far ultraviolet (FUV) emission, consistent with recent direct detections indicating Type II SNe have moderately massive red supergiant progenitors. Stripped Envelope (SE) SNe have the strongest correlation with Halpha fluxes, indicative of very massive progenitors (M* > 20 M_solar). This result contradicts a small, but growing, number of direct detections of SE SN progenitors indicating they are moderately massive binary systems. Our result is consistent, however, with a recent population analysis suggesting binary SE SN progenitor masses are regularly underestimated. SE SNe are centralised with respect to Type II SNe and there are no SE SNe recorded beyond half the maximum disc radius in the optical and one third the disc radius in the ultraviolet. The absence of SE SNe beyond these distances is consistent with reduced massive star formation efficiencies in the outskirts of the host galaxies.

Angular analysis of $B^0 \to K^\ast(892)^0 \ell^+ \ell^-$

We present a measurement of angular observables, $P_4'$, $P_5'$, $P_6'$, $P_8'$, in the decay $B^0 \to K^\ast(892)^0 \ell^+ \ell^-$, where $\ell^+\ell^-$ is either $e^+e^-$ or $μ^+μ^-$. The analysis is performed on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $711~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ containing $772\times 10^{6}$ $B\bar B$ pairs, collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider KEKB. Four angular observables, $P_{4,5,6,8}'$ are extracted in five bins of the invariant mass squared of the lepton system, $q^2$. We compare our results for $P_{4,5,6,8}'$ with Standard Model predictions including the $q^2$ region in which the LHCb collaboration reported the so-called $P_5'$ anomaly.

Determination of the muon charge sign with the dipolar spectrometers of the OPERA experiment

The OPERA long-baseline neutrino-oscillation experiment has observed the direct appearance of $ν_τ$ in the CNGS $ν_μ$ beam. Two large muon magnetic spectrometers are used to identify muons produced in the $τ$ leptonic decay and in $ν_μ^{CC}$ interactions by measuring their charge and momentum. Besides the kinematic analysis of the $τ$ decays, background resulting from the decay of charmed particles produced in $ν_μ^{CC}$ interactions is reduced by efficiently identifying the muon track. A new method for the charge sign determination has been applied, via a weighted angular matching of the straight track-segments reconstructed in the different parts of the dipole magnets. Results obtained for Monte Carlo and real data are presented. Comparison with a method where no matching is used shows a significant reduction of up to 40\% of the fraction of wrongly determined charges.

Discovery of a Supercluster at $z\sim$0.91 and Testing the $Λ$CDM Cosmological Model

The $Λ$CDM cosmological model successfully reproduces many aspects of the galaxy and structure formation of the universe. However, the growth of large-scale structures (LSSs) in the early universe is not well tested yet with observational data. Here, we have utilized wide and deep optical--near-infrared data in order to search for distant galaxy clusters and superclusters ($0.8<z<1.2$). From the spectroscopic observation with the Inamori Magellan Areal Camera and Spectrograph (IMACS) on the Magellan telescope, three massive clusters at $z\sim$0.91 are confirmed in the SSA22 field. Interestingly, all of them have similar redshifts within $Δz\sim$0.01 with velocity dispersions ranging from 470 to 1300 km s$^{-1}$. Moreover, as the maximum separation is $\sim$15 Mpc, they compose a supercluster at $z\sim$0.91, meaning that this is one of the most massive superclusters at this redshift to date. The galaxy density map implies that the confirmed clusters are embedded in a larger structure stretching over $\sim$100 Mpc. $Λ$CDM models predict about one supercluster like this in our surveyed volume, consistent with our finding so far. However, there are more supercluster candidates in this field, suggesting that additional studies are required to determine if the $Λ$CDM cosmological model can successfully reproduce the LSSs at high redshift.

This result is obtained from observables $x_- = +0.4 ^{+1.0 +0.0}_{-0.6 -0.1} \pm0.0$, $y_- = -0.6 ^{+0.8 +0.1}_{-1.0 -0.0} \pm0.1$, $x_+ = +0.1 ^{+0.7 +0.0}_{-0.4 -0.1} \pm0.1$ and $y_+ = +0.3 ^{+0.5 +0.0}_{-0.8 -0.1} \pm0.1$, where $x_\pm = r_S \cos(δ_S \pm ϕ_3)$, $y_\pm = r_S \sin(δ_S \pm ϕ_3)$ and $ϕ_3~(δ_S)$ is the weak (strong) phase difference between $B^0 \to D^0K^{*0}$ and $B^0 \to \bar{D^0}K^{*0}$.

First Upper Limits on the Radar Cross Section of Cosmic-Ray Induced Extensive Air Showers

TARA (Telescope Array Radar) is a cosmic ray radar detection experiment colocated with Telescope Array, the conventional surface scintillation detector (SD) and fluorescence telescope detector (FD) near Delta, Utah, U.S.A. The TARA detector combines a 40 kW, 54.1 MHz VHF transmitter and high-gain transmitting antenna which broadcasts the radar carrier over the SD array and within the FD field of view, towards a 250 MS/s DAQ receiver. TARA has been collecting data since 2013 with the primary goal of observing the radar signatures of extensive air showers (EAS). Simulations indicate that echoes are expected to be short in duration (~10 microseconds) and exhibit rapidly changing frequency, with rates on the order of 1 MHz/microsecond. The EAS radar cross-section (RCS) is currently unknown although it is the subject of over 70 years of speculation. A novel signal search technique is described in which the expected radar echo of a particular air shower is used as a matched filter template and compared to waveforms obtained by triggering the radar DAQ using the Telescope Array fluorescence detector. No evidence for the scattering of radio frequency radiation by EAS is obtained to date. We report the first quantitative RCS upper limits using EAS that triggered the Telescope Array Fluorescence Detector.

Measurement of $CP$ asymmetry in the $D^{0} \to K^0_S K^0_S$ decay at Belle

We report a measurement of the time-integrated $CP$ asymmetry in the neutral charm meson decay $D^0 \to K^0_S K^0_S$ using 921~fb$^{-1}$ data collected at the $Υ(4S)$ and $Υ(5S)$ resonances with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. The observed asymmetry is $$ A_{CP}(D^0 \to K^0_S K^0_S) = (-0.02 \pm 1.53 \pm 0.17) \%, $$ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This latter uncertainty is dominated by the error of the normalisation channel. The result is consistent with Standard Model expectations and improves the uncertainty with respect to previous measurement of this quantity by more than a factor of three.

Measurement of $e^+e^- \to π^+π^-ψ(2S)$ via Initial State Radiation at Belle

We report measurement of the cross section of $e^+e^-\to π^+π^-ψ(2S)$ between 4.0 and $5.5 {\rm GeV}$, based on an analysis of initial state radiation events in a $980 \rm fb^{-1}$ data sample recorded with the Belle detector. The properties of the $Y(4360)$ and $Y(4660)$ states are determined. Fitting the mass spectrum of $π^+π^-ψ(2S)$ with two coherent Breit-Wigner functions, we find two solutions with identical mass and width but different couplings to electron-positron pairs: $M_{Y(4360)} = (4347\pm 6\pm 3) {\rm MeV}/c^2$, $Γ_{Y(4360)} = (103\pm 9\pm 5) {\rm MeV}$, $M_{Y(4660)} = (4652\pm10\pm 8) {\rm MeV}/c^2$, $Γ_{Y(4660)} = (68\pm 11\pm 1) \rm MeV$; and ${\cal{B}}[Y(4360)\to π^+π^-ψ(2S)]\cdot Γ_{Y(4360)}^{e^+e^-} = (10.9\pm 0.6\pm 0.7) \rm eV$ and ${\cal{B}}[Y(4660)\to π^+π^-ψ(2S)]\cdot Γ_{Y(4660)}^{e^+e^-} = (8.1\pm 1.1\pm 0.5) \rm eV$ for one solution; or ${\cal{B}}[Y(4360)\to π^+π^-ψ(2S)]\cdot Γ_{Y(4360)}^{e^+e^-} = (9.2\pm 0.6\pm 0.6) \rm eV$ and ${\cal{B}}[Y(4660)\to π^+π^-ψ(2S)]\cdot Γ_{Y(4660)}^{e^+e^-} = (2.0\pm 0.3\pm 0.2) \rm eV$ for the other. Here, the first errors are statistical and the second systematic. Evidence for a charged charmoniumlike structure at $4.05 {\rm GeV}/c^2$ is observed in the $π^{\pm}ψ(2S)$ intermediate state in the $Y(4360)$ decays.

We report the first measurement of the $τ$ lepton polarization in the decay ${\bar B} \rightarrow D^* τ^- {\barν_τ}$ as well as a new measurement of the ratio of the branching fractions $R(D^{*}) = \mathcal{B}({\bar B} \rightarrow D^* τ^- {\barν_τ}) / \mathcal{B}({\bar B} \rightarrow D^* \ell^- {\barν_{\ell}})$, where $\ell^-$ denotes an electron or a muon, with the decays $τ^- \rightarrow π^- ν_τ$ and $τ^- \rightarrow ρ^- ν_τ$. We use the full data sample of $772 \times 10^6$ $B{\bar B}$ pairs accumulated with the Belle detector at the KEKB electron-positron collider. Our preliminary results, $R(D^*) = 0.276 \pm 0.034{\rm (stat.)} ^{+0.029} _{-0.026}{\rm (syst.)}$ and $P_τ = -0.44 \pm 0.47 {\rm (stat.)} ^{+0.20} _{-0.17} {\rm (syst.)}$, are consistent with the theoretical predictions of the Standard Model within $0.6$ standard deviation.

We select a sample of $B^0 \bar{B}^0$ pairs by reconstructing both $B$ mesons in semileptonic decays to $D^{*\mp} \ell^{\pm}$. We measure ${\cal R}(D^*)= 0.302 \pm 0.030({\rm stat)} \pm 0.011({\rm syst)}$, which is within $1.6 σ$ of the Standard Model theoretical expectation, where $σ$ is the standard deviation including systematic uncertainties.

Measurement of the decay $B\to D\ellν_\ell$ in fully reconstructed events and determination of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{cb}|$

We present a determination of the magnitude of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{cb}|$ using the decay $B\to D\ellν_\ell$ ($\ell=e,μ$) based on 711 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-\to Υ(4S)$ data recorded by the Belle detector and containing $772 \times 10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs. One $B$ meson in the event is fully reconstructed in a hadronic decay mode while the other, on the signal side, is partially reconstructed from a charged lepton and either a $D^+$ or $D^0$ meson in a total of 23 hadronic decay modes. The isospin-averaged branching fraction of the decay $B\to D\ellν_\ell$ is found to be $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to D^- \ell^+ ν_{\ell})=(2.31\pm 0.03(\mathrm{stat})\pm 0.11(\mathrm{syst}))\%$. Analyzing the differential decay rate as a function of the hadronic recoil with the parameterization of Caprini, Lelouch and Neubert and using the form-factor prediction $\mathcal{G}(1)=1.0541\pm 0.0083$ calculated by FNAL/MILC, we obtain $η_\mathrm{EW}|V_{cb}|=(40.12\pm 1.34)\times 10^{-3}$, where $η_\mathrm{EW}$ is the electroweak correction factor. Alternatively, assuming the model-independent form-factor parameterization of Boyd, Grinstein and Lebed and using lattice QCD data from the FNAL/MILC and HPQCD collaborations, we find $η_\mathrm{EW}|V_{cb}|=(41.10 \pm 1.14)\times 10^{-3}$.

Measurement of the Lepton Forward-Backward Asymmetry in $B \rightarrow X_s \ell^+ \ell^-$ Decays with a Sum of Exclusive Modes

We report the first measurement of the lepton forward-backward asymmetry ${\cal A}_{\rm FB}$ as a function of the squared four-momentum of the dilepton system, $q^2$, for the electroweak penguin process $B \rightarrow X_s \ell^+ \ell^-$ with a sum of exclusive final states, where $\ell$ is an electron or a muon and $X_s$ is a hadronic recoil system with an $s$ quark. The results are based on a data sample containing $772\times10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs recorded at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+ e^-$ collider. ${\cal A}_{\rm FB}$ for the inclusive $B \rightarrow X_s \ell^+ \ell^-$ is extrapolated from the sum of 10 exclusive $X_s$ states whose invariant mass is less than 2 GeV/$c^2$. For $q^2 > 10.2$ GeV$^2$/$c^2$, ${\cal A}_{\rm FB} < 0$ is excluded at the 2.3$σ$ level, where $σ$ is the standard deviation. For $q^2 < 4.3$ GeV$^2$/$c^2$, the result is within 1.8$σ$ of the Standard Model theoretical expectation.

Measurements of the $Υ(10860)$ and $Υ(11020)$ resonances via $σ(e^+e^-\rightarrowΥ(n{\rm S})π^+π^-)$

We report new measurements of the total cross sections for $e^+e^-\to Υ(n{\rm S})π^+π^-$ ($n$ = 1, 2, 3) and $e^+e^-\to b\bar b$ from a high-luminosity fine scan of the region $\sqrt{s} = 10.63$-$11.05$ GeV with the Belle detector. We observe that the $Υ(n{\rm S})π^+π^-$ spectra have little or no non-resonant component and extract from them the masses and widths of $Υ(10860)$ and $Υ(11020)$ and their relative phase. We find $M_{10860}=(10891.1\pm3.2^{+0.6}_{-1.7})$ MeV/$c^2$ and $Γ_{10860}=(53.7^{+7.1}_{-5.6}\,^{+1.3}_{-5.4})$ MeV and report first measurements $M_{11020}=(10987.5^{+6.4}_{-2.5}\,^{+9.0}_{-2.1})$ MeV/$c^2$, $Γ_{11020}=(61^{+9}_{-19}\,^{+2}_{-20})$ MeV, and $ϕ_{\rm 11020}-ϕ_{\rm 10860} = (-1.0\pm0.4\,^{+1.4}_{-0.1})$ rad.

Observation of Transverse $Λ/\barΛ$ Hyperon Polarization in $e^+e^-$ Annihilation at Belle

We report the first observation of the polarization of $Λ/\barΛ$ hyperons transverse to its production plane in $e^+e^-$ annihilation. We observe a significant polarization that rises with the fractional energy carried by the hyperon as well as its transverse momentum. To define the production plane, we use the direction of the hyperon momentum together with either the thrust axis in the event or the momentum vector of a hadron in the opposite hemisphere. Furthermore, we investigate the contributions to the hyperon polarization from the feed-down from $Σ^0/\barΣ^0$ and $Λ_c^{\pm}$ decays. This measurement uses a dataset of 800.4fb$^{-1}$ collected by the Belle experiment at or near a center-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV.

Search for correlations between the arrival directions of IceCube neutrino events and ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays detected by the Pierre Auger Observatory and the Telescope Array

This paper presents the results of different searches for correlations between very high-energy neutrino candidates detected by IceCube and the highest-energy cosmic rays measured by the Pierre Auger Observatory and the Telescope Array. We first consider samples of cascade neutrino events and of high-energy neutrino-induced muon tracks, which provided evidence for a neutrino flux of astrophysical origin, and study their cross-correlation with the ultrahigh-energy cosmic ray (UHECR) samples as a function of angular separation. We also study their possible directional correlations using a likelihood method stacking the neutrino arrival directions and adopting different assumptions on the size of the UHECR magnetic deflections. Finally, we perform another likelihood analysis stacking the UHECR directions and using a sample of through-going muon tracks optimized for neutrino point-source searches with sub-degree angular resolution. No indications of correlations at discovery level are obtained for any of the searches performed. The smallest of the p-values comes from the search for correlation between UHECRs with IceCube high-energy cascades, a result that should continue to be monitored.

We obtain ${\cal B}(B^0 \rightarrow ρ^+ ρ^-)=(28.3\pm 1.5\;(\rm stat) \pm 1.5\;(\rm syst))\times 10^{-6}$, $f_L = 0.988\pm 0.012\;(\rm stat ) \pm0.023\;(\rm syst)$, ${\cal A}_{CP} = 0.00\pm0.10\;(\rm stat ) \pm0.06\;(\rm syst)$, ${\cal S}_{CP} = -0.13\pm0.15\;(\rm stat ) \pm0.05\;(\rm syst).$ We perform an isospin analysis to constrain the CKM angle $ϕ_2$ and obtain two solutions with \begin{eqnarray} ϕ_{2} = (93.7\pm10.6)^{\circ},\nonumber \end{eqnarray} being most compatible with other Standard-Model based fits to the data.

Study of $π^0$ pair production in single-tag two-photon collisions

We report a measurement of the differential cross section of $π^0$ pair production in single-tag two-photon collisions, $γ^* γ\to π^0 π^0$, in $e^+ e^-$ scattering. The cross section is measured for $Q^2$ up to 30 GeV$^2$, where $Q^2$ is the negative of the invariant mass squared of the tagged photon, in the kinematic range 0.5 GeV < W < 2.1 GeV and $|\cos θ^*|$ < 1.0 for the total energy and pion scattering angle, respectively, in the $γ^* γ$ center-of-mass system. The results are based on a data sample of 759 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. The transition form factor of the $f_0(980)$ and that of the $f_2(1270)$ with the helicity-0, -1, and -2 components separately are measured for the first time and are compared with theoretical calculations.

Study of χ_{bJ}(1P) Properties in the Radiative Υ(2S) Decays

We report a study of radiative decays of χ_{bJ}(1P)(J=0,1,2) mesons into 74 hadronic final states comprising charged and neutral pions, kaons, protons; out of these, 41 modes are observed with at least 5 standard deviation significance. Our measurements not only improve the previous measurements by the CLEO Collaboration but also lead to first observations in many new modes. The large sample allows us to probe the total decay width of the χ_{b0}(1P). In the absence of a statistically significant result, a 90% confidence-level upper limit is set on the width at Γ_{total}< 2.4 MeV. Our results are based on 24.7 fb^{-1} of e+e- collision data recorded by the Belle detector at the Υ(2S) resonance, corresponding to (157.8\pm3.6)\times10^6 Υ(2S) decays.

A Northern Sky Survey for Point-Like Sources of EeV Neutral Particles with the Telescope Array Experiment

We report on the search for steady point-like sources of neutral particles around 10$^{18}$ eV between 2008 May and 2013 May with the scintillator surface detector of the Telescope Array experiment. We found overall no significant point-like excess above 0.5 EeV in the northern sky. Subsequently, we also searched for coincidence with the Fermi bright Galactic sources. No significant coincidence was found within the statistical uncertainty. Hence, we set an upper limit on the neutron flux that corresponds to an averaged flux of 0.07 km$^{-2}$ yr$^{-1}$ for $E>1$ EeV in the northern sky at the 95% confidence level. This is the most stringent flux upper limit in a northern sky survey assuming point-like sources. The upper limit at the 95% confidence level on the neutron flux from Cygnus X-3 is also set to 0.2 km$^{-2}$ yr$^{-1}$ for $E>0.5$ EeV. This is an order of magnitude lower than previous flux measurements.

Discovery of tau neutrino appearance in the CNGS neutrino beam with the OPERA experiment

The OPERA experiment was designed to search for $ν_μ \rightarrow ν_τ$ oscillations in appearance mode, i.e. by detecting the $τ$-leptons produced in charged current $ν_τ$ interactions. The experiment took data from 2008 to 2012 in the CERN Neutrinos to Gran Sasso beam. The observation of $ν_μ \rightarrow ν_τ$ appearance, achieved with four candidate events in a sub-sample of the data, was previously reported. In this paper, a fifth $ν_τ$ candidate event, found in an enlarged data sample, is described. Together with a further reduction of the expected background, the candidate events detected so far allow assessing the discovery of $ν_μ\rightarrow ν_τ$ oscillations in appearance mode with a significance larger than 5 $σ$.

Evidence for the decay B0->eta pi^0

We report a search for the charmless hadronic decay $B^0\toηπ^0$ with a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 694 $\rm fb^{-1}$ containing $753\times10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs. The data were collected by the Belle experiment running on the $Υ(4S)$ resonance at the KEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. We measure a branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(B^0\toηπ^0)=(4.1^{+1.7+0.5}_{-1.5-0.7})\times 10^{-7}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. Our measurement gives an upper limit of $\mathcal{B}(B^0\toηπ^0)<6.5\times 10^{-7}$ at 90\% confidence level. The measurement is performed combining the final data samples collected at the Y(4S) resonance by the BaBar and Belle experiments at the asymmetric-energy B factories PEP-II at SLAC and KEKB at KEK, respectively. The data samples contain ( 471 +/- 3 ) x 10^6 BB pairs recorded by the BaBar detector and ( 772 +/- 11 ) x 10^6, BB pairs recorded by the Belle detector. We measure the CP asymmetry parameters -eta_f S = +0.66 +/- 0.10 (stat.) +/- 0.06 (syst.) and C = -0.02 +/- 0.07 (stat.) +/- 0.03 (syst.). The hypothesis of no mixing-induced CP violation is excluded in these decays at the level of 5.4 standard deviations.

Inclusive cross sections for pairs of identified light charged hadrons and for single protons in $e^+e^-$ at $\sqrt{s}=$ 10.58 GeV

We report the first double differential cross sections of two charged pions and kaons ($e^+e^- \rightarrow hhX$) in electron-positron annihilation as a function of the fractional energies of the two hadrons for any charge and hadron combination. The dependence of these di-hadron cross sections on the topology (same, opposite-hemisphere or anywhere) is also studied with the help of the event shape variable thrust and its axis. The ratios of these di-hadron cross sections for different charges and hadron combinations directly shed light on the contributing fragmentation functions. For example, we find that the ratio of same-sign pion pairs over opposite-sign pion pairs drops toward higher fractional energies where disfavored fragmentation is expected to be suppressed. These di-hadron results are obtained from a $655\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ data sample collected near the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. Extending the previously published single-pion and single-kaon cross sections, single-proton ($e^+e^- \rightarrow pX$) cross sections are extracted from a $159\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ data sub-sample.

Measurement of Azimuthal Modulations in the Cross-Section of Di-Pion Pairs in Di-Jet Production from Electron-Positron Annihilation

We present an extraction of azimuthal correlations between two pairs of charged pions detected in opposite jets from electron-positron annihilation. These correlations may arise from the dependence of the di-pion fragmentation on the polarization of the parent quark in the process $e^+e^- \rightarrow q \bar{q}$. Due to the correlation of the quark polarizations, the cross-section of di-pion pair production, in which the pion pairs are detected in opposite jets in a dijet event, exhibits a modulation in the azimuthal angles of the planes containing the hadron pairs with respect to the production plane. The measurement of this modulation allows access to combinations of fragmentation functions that are sensitive to the quark's transverse polarization and helicity. Within our uncertainties we do not observe a significant signal from the previously unmeasured helicity dependent fragmentation function $G_1^\perp$. This measurement uses a dataset of 938~fb$^{-1}$ collected by the Belle experiment at or near $\sqrt{s}\approx10.58$ GeV.

Measurement of the amplitude ratio of $B^0 \to D^0K^{*0}$ and $B^0 \to \bar{D^0}K^{*0}$ decays with a model-independent Dalitz plot analysis using $D\to K_S^0π^+π^-$ decays

We report a measurement of the amplitude ratio $r_S$ of $B^0 \to D^0K^{*0}$ and $B^0 \to \bar{D^0}K^{*0}$ decays with a model-independent Dalitz plot analysis using $D\to K_S^0π^+π^-$ decays. Using the full data sample of $772\times10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at KEKB accelerator the upper limit is $r_S < 0.87$ at the 68 % confidence level. This result is the first measurement of $r_S$ with a model-independent Dalitz analysis, and is consistent with results from other analyses. The value of $r_S$ indicates the sensitivity of the decay to $ϕ_3$ because the statistical uncertainty is proportional to $1/r_S$. The $r_S$ result is obtained from observables ($x_\pm$, $y_\pm$) \begin{eqnarray} x_- &=& +0.4 ^{+1.0 +0.0}_{-0.6 -0.1} \pm0.0 \\ y_- &=& -0.6 ^{+0.8 +0.1}_{-1.0 -0.0} \pm0.1 \\ x_+ &=& +0.1 ^{+0.7 +0.0}_{-0.4 -0.1} \pm0.1 \\ y_+ &=& +0.3 ^{+0.5 +0.0}_{-0.8 -0.1} \pm0.1 \\ , \end{eqnarray} where $x_\pm = r_S \cos(δ_S \pm ϕ_3)$, $y_\pm = r_S \sin(δ_S \pm ϕ_3)$ and $ϕ_3 (δ_S)$ are the weak (strong) phase difference between $B^0 \to D^0K^{*0}$ and $B^0 \to \bar{D^0}K^{*0}$. The first uncertainty is statistical, the second is the experimental systematic and the third is the systematic due to the uncertainties on $c_i$ and $s_i$ parameters measured by CLEO.

Measurement of the Proton-Air Cross Section with Telescope Array's Middle Drum Detector and Surface Array in Hybrid Mode

In this work we are reporting on the measurement of the proton-air inelastic cross section $σ^{\rm inel}_{\rm p-air}$ using the Telescope Array (TA) detector. Based on the measurement of the $σ^{\rm inel}_{\rm p-air}$ the proton-proton cross section $σ_{\rm p-p}$ value is also determined at $\sqrt{s} = 95_{-8}^{+5}$ TeV. Detecting cosmic ray events at ultra high energies with Telescope Array enables us to study this fundamental parameter that we are otherwise unable to access with particle accelerators. The data used in this report is the hybrid events observed by the Middle Drum fluorescence detector together with the surface array detector collected over five years. The value of the $σ^{\rm inel}_{\rm p-air}$ is found to be equal to $567.0 \pm 70.5 [{\rm Stat.}] ^{+29}_{-25} [{\rm Sys.}]$ mb. The total proton-proton cross section is subsequently inferred from Glauber Formalism and Block, Halzen and Stanev QCD inspired fit and is found to be equal to $170_{-44}^{+48} [{\rm Stat.}] _{-17}^{+19} [{\rm Sys.}] $mb.

Upper limits of the corresponding branching fractions are determined as ${\cal B}(B^+ \to e^+ ν_e)<3.5\times 10^{-6}$ and ${\cal B}(B^+ \to μ^+ ν_μ)<2.7 \times 10^{-6}$ at 90$\%$ confidence level.

Search for B+ -> l+ nu gamma decays with hadronic tagging using the full Belle data sample

We search for the decay B+ -> l+ nu gamma with l+ = e+ or mu+ using the full Belle data set of 772 x 10^6 BBbar pairs, collected at the Y(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. We reconstruct one B meson in a hadronic decay mode and search for the B+ -> l+ nu gamma decay in the remainder of the event. We observe no significant signal within the phase space of E_gamma^sig > 1 GeV and obtain upper limits of BR(B+ -> e+ nu gamma) < 6.1 x 10^-6, BR(B+ -> mu+ nu gamma) < 3.4 x 10^-6, and BR(B+ -> l+ nu gamma) < 3.5 x 10^-6 at 90 % credibility level.

Semi-inclusive studies of semileptonic $B_s$ decays at Belle

We present an analysis of the semi-inclusive decays $B_s \to D_s^- X \ell^+ ν$ and $B_s \to D_s^{*-} X \ell^+ ν$, where $X$ denotes a final state that may consist of additional hadrons or photons and $\ell$ is an electron or muon. The studied $B_s$ decays are contained in the $121.4~{\rm fb}^{-1}$ $Υ(5S)$ data sample collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. The branching fractions of the decays are measured to be $\mathcal{B}(B_s \to D_s^- X \ell^+ ν) = [8.2 \pm 0.2 (\text{stat}) \pm 0.6 (\text{syst}) \pm 1.4 (\text{ext})]\%$ and $\mathcal{B}(B_s \to D_s^{*-} X \ell^+ ν) = [5.4 \pm 0.4 (\text{stat}) \pm 0.4 (\text{syst}) \pm 0.9 (\text{ext})]\%$, where the first two uncertainties are statistical and systematic and the last is due to external parameters. The measurement also provides an estimate of the $B_s^{(*)}\bar{B}_s^{(*)}$ production cross-section, $σ(e^+e^- \to B_s^{(*)}\bar{B}_s^{(*)}) = (53.8 \pm 1.4 (\text{stat}) \pm 4.0 (\text{syst}) \pm 3.4 (\text{ext}))\,{\rm pb}$, at the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 10.86\,{\rm GeV}$.

Study of $D^{**}$ production and light hadronic states in the $\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} ωπ^-$ decay

We report on the first observations of $\bar{B}^0 \to D_1(2430)^0 ω$, $\bar{B}^0 \to D_1(2420)^0 ω$ and $\bar{B}^0 \to D^*_2(2460)^0 ω$ decays. The $\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} ρ(1450)^-$ decay is also observed. The branching fraction measurements are based on $(771.6 \pm 10.6)\times 10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ events collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. The fractions of longitudinal polarization of the $D^{**}$ states as well as partial wave fractions of the $D_1(2430)^0$ are obtained. We also set a $90\%$ confidence level upper limit for the product of branching fractions of $\mathcal{B}(\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} b_1(1235)^-) \times \mathcal{B}(b_1(1235)^- \to ωπ^-)$. The measurements show evidence of nontrivial final-state interaction phases for the $ρ$-like amplitudes.

Technical Design Report for the AMoRE $0νββ$ Decay Search Experiment

The AMoRE (Advanced Mo-based Rare process Experiment) project is a series of experiments that use advanced cryogenic techniques to search for the neutrinoless double-beta decay of \mohundred. The work is being carried out by an international collaboration of researchers from eight countries. These searches involve high precision measurements of radiation-induced temperature changes and scintillation light produced in ultra-pure \Mo[100]-enriched and \Ca[48]-depleted calcium molybdate ($\mathrm{^{48depl}Ca^{100}MoO_4}$) crystals that are located in a deep underground laboratory in Korea. The \mohundred nuclide was chosen for this \zeronubb decay search because of its high $Q$-value and favorable nuclear matrix element. Tests have demonstrated that \camo crystals produce the brightest scintillation light among all of the molybdate crystals, both at room and at cryogenic temperatures. $\mathrm{^{48depl}Ca^{100}MoO_4}$ crystals are being operated at milli-Kelvin temperatures and read out via specially developed metallic-magnetic-calorimeter (MMC) temperature sensors that have excellent energy resolution and relatively fast response times. The excellent energy resolution provides good discrimination of signal from backgrounds, and the fast response time is important for minimizing the irreducible background caused by random coincidence of two-neutrino double-beta decay events of \mohundred nuclei. Comparisons of the scintillating-light and phonon yields and pulse shape discrimination of the phonon signals will be used to provide redundant rejection of alpha-ray-induced backgrounds. An effective Majorana neutrino mass sensitivity that reaches the expected range of the inverted neutrino mass hierarchy, i.e., 20-50 meV, could be achieved with a 200~kg array of $\mathrm{^{48depl}Ca^{100}MoO_4}$ crystals operating for three years.

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory, the Pierre Auger Observatory and the Telescope Array: Joint Contribution to the 34th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC 2015)

We have conducted three searches for correlations between ultra-high energy cosmic rays detected by the Telescope Array and the Pierre Auger Observatory, and high-energy neutrino candidate events from IceCube. Two cross-correlation analyses with UHECRs are done: one with 39 cascades from the IceCube `high-energy starting events' sample and the other with 16 high-energy `track events'. The angular separation between the arrival directions of neutrinos and UHECRs is scanned over. The same events are also used in a separate search using a maximum likelihood approach, after the neutrino arrival directions are stacked. To estimate the significance we assume UHECR magnetic deflections to be inversely proportional to their energy, with values $3^\circ$, $6^\circ$ and $9^\circ$ at 100 EeV to allow for the uncertainties on the magnetic field strength and UHECR charge. A similar analysis is performed on stacked UHECR arrival directions and the IceCube sample of through-going muon track events which were optimized for neutrino point-source searches.

Type IIb Supernova 2013df Entering Into An Interaction Phase: A Link between the Progenitor and the Mass Loss

We report the late-time evolution of Type IIb Supernova (SN IIb) 2013df. SN 2013df showed a dramatic change in its spectral features at ~1 year after the explosion. Early on it showed typical characteristics shared by SNe IIb/Ib/Ic dominated by metal emission lines, while later on it was dominated by broad and flat-topped Halpha and He I emissions. The late-time spectra are strikingly similar to SN IIb 1993J, which is the only previous example clearly showing the same transition. This late-time evolution is fully explained by a change in the energy input from the $^{56}$Co decay to the interaction between the SN ejecta and dense circumstellar matter (CSM). The mass loss rate is derived to be ~(5.4 +- 3.2) x 10^{-5} Msun/yr (for the wind velocity of ~20 km/s), similar to SN 1993J but larger than SN IIb 2011dh by an order of magnitude. The striking similarity between SNe 2013df and 1993J in the (candidate) progenitors and the CSM environments, and the contrast in these natures to SN 2011dh, infer that there is a link between the natures of the progenitor and the mass loss: SNe IIb with a more extended progenitor have experienced a much stronger mass loss in the final centuries toward the explosion. It might indicate that SNe IIb from a more extended progenitor are the explosions during a strong binary interaction phase, while those from a less extended progenitor have a delay between the strong binary interaction and the explosion.

Amplitude analysis of e+e- => Y(nS)pi+pi- at sqrt(s)=10.865 GeV

We report results on studies of the e+e- annihilation into three-body Y(nS)pi+pi- (n=1,2,3) final states including measurements of cross sections and the full amplitude analysis. The cross sections measured at sqrt(s)=10.865 GeV and corrected for the initial state radiation are sigma(e+e-=>Y(1S)pi+pi-)=(2.27+-0.12+-0.14) pb, sigma(e+e-=>Y(2S)pi+pi-)=(4.07+-0.16+-0.45) pb, and sigma(e+e-=>Y(3S)pi+pi-)=(1.46+-0.09+-0.16) pb. Amplitude analysis of the three-body Y(nS)pi+pi- final states strongly favors I^G(J^P)=1^+(1^+) quantum-number assignments for the two bottomonium-like Zb+- states, recently observed in the Y(nS)pi+- and hb(mP)pi+- (m=1,2) decay channels. The results are obtained with a $121.4 1/fb data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider.

Enhancement of Transition Temperature in FexSe0.5Te0.5 Film via Iron Vacancies

The effects of iron deficiency in FexSe0.5Te0.5 thin films (0.8<x<1) on superconductivity and electronic properties have been studied. A significant enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature (TC) up to 21K was observed in the most Fe deficient film (x=0.8). Based on the observed and simulated structural variation results, there is a high possibility that Fe vacancies can be formed in the FexSe0.5Te0.5 films. The enhancement of TC shows a strong relationship with the lattice strain effect induced by Fe vacancies. Importantly, the presence of Fe vacancies alters the charge carrier population by introducing electron charge carriers, with the Fe deficient film showing more metallic behavior than the defect-free film. Our study provides a means to enhance the superconductivity and tune the charge carriers via Fe vacancy, with no reliance on chemical doping.

Evidence for $ν_μ\to ν_τ$ appearance in the CNGS neutrino beam with the OPERA experiment

The OPERA experiment is designed to search for $ν_μ \rightarrow ν_τ$ oscillations in appearance mode i.e. through the direct observation of the $τ$ lepton in $ν_τ$ charged current interactions. The experiment has taken data for five years, since 2008, with the CERN Neutrino to Gran Sasso beam. Previously, two $ν_τ$ candidates with a $τ$ decaying into hadrons were observed in a sub-sample of data of the 2008-2011 runs. Here we report the observation of a third $ν_τ$ candidate in the $τ^-\toμ^-$ decay channel coming from the analysis of a sub-sample of the 2012 run. Taking into account the estimated background, the absence of $ν_μ \rightarrow ν_τ$ oscillations is excluded at the 3.4 $σ$ level.

Evidence of $Υ(1S) \to J/ψ+χ_{c1}$ and search for double-charmonium production in $Υ(1S)$ and $Υ(2S)$ decays

Using data samples of $102\times10^6$ $Υ(1S)$ and $158\times10^6$ $Υ(2S)$ events collected with the Belle detector, a first experimental search has been made for double-charmonium production in the exclusive decays $Υ(1S,2S)\rightarrow J/ψ(ψ')+X$, where $X=η_c$, $χ_{cJ} (J=~0,~1,~2)$, $η_c(2S)$, $X(3940)$, and $X(4160)$. No significant signal is observed in the spectra of the mass recoiling against the reconstructed $J/ψ$ or $ψ'$ except for the evidence of $χ_{c1}$ production with a significance of $4.6σ$ for $Υ(1S)\rightarrow J/ψ+χ_{c1}$. The measured branching fraction $\BR(Υ(1S)\rightarrow J/ψ+χ_{c1})$ is $(3.90\pm1.21(\rm stat.)\pm0.23 (\rm syst.))\times10^{-6}$. The $90\%$ confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions of the other modes having a significance of less than $3σ$ are determined. These results are consistent with theoretical calculations using the nonrelativistic QCD factorization approach.

Indications of Intermediate-Scale Anisotropy of Cosmic Rays with Energy Greater Than 57 EeV in the Northern Sky Measured with the Surface Detector of the Telescope Array Experiment

We have searched for intermediate-scale anisotropy in the arrival directions of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays with energies above 57~EeV in the northern sky using data collected over a 5 year period by the surface detector of the Telescope Array experiment. We report on a cluster of events that we call the hotspot, found by oversampling using 20$^\circ$-radius circles. The hotspot has a Li-Ma statistical significance of 5.1$σ$, and is centered at R.A.=146.7$^{\circ}$, Dec.=43.2$^{\circ}$. The position of the hotspot is about 19$^{\circ}$ off of the supergalactic plane. The probability of a cluster of events of 5.1$σ$ significance, appearing by chance in an isotropic cosmic-ray sky, is estimated to be 3.7$\times$10$^{-4}$ (3.4$σ$).

We report a measurement of ${D^{0}}$-${\overline{D}{}^{0}}$ mixing parameters and a search for indirect $CP$ violation through a time-dependent amplitude analysis of ${D^0\to K_S^0π^+π^-}$ decays. The results are based on 921~fb$^{-1}$ of data accumulated with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. Assuming $CP$ conservation, we measure the mixing parameters $x=(0.56\pm0.19^{+0.03}_{-0.09}{^{+0.06}_{-0.09}})\%$ and $y=(0.30\pm0.15^{+0.04}_{-0.05}{^{+0.03}_{-0.06})}\%$, where the errors are statistical, experimental systematic, and systematic due to the amplitude model, respectively. With $CP$ violation allowed, the parameters $|q/p|=0.90^{+0.16}_{-0.15}{^{+0.05}_{-0.04}}{^{+0.06}_{-0.05}}$ and $\arg(q/p)=(-6\pm11{\pm3}{^{+3}_{-4}})^{\circ}$ are found to be consistent with conservation of $CP$ symmetry in mixing and in the interference between mixing and decay, respectively.

Measurement of $B^0 \to D_s^- K^0_Sπ^+$ and $B^+ \to D_s^- K^+K^+$ branching fractions

We report a measurement of the $B^0$ and $B^+$ meson decays to the $D_s^-K^0_S π^+$ and $D_s^- K^+K^+$ final states, respectively, using $657 \times 10^{6} B\overline{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. Using the $D_s^-\to ϕπ^-$, $K^{*}(892)^0 K^-$ and $K^0_S K^-$ decay modes for the $D_s$ reconstruction, we measure the following branching fractions: ${\cal B}(B^0\to D_s^{-}K^0_Sπ^+)=[0.47 \pm 0.06 (\mathrm {stat}) \pm 0.05 (\mathrm {syst})]\times 10^{-4}$ and ${\cal B}(B^+\to D_s^-K^+K^+)= [0.93 \pm 0.22 (\mathrm {stat})\pm 0.10 (\mathrm {syst})]\times 10^{-5}$. We find the ratio of the branching fraction of $B^+\to D_s^-K^+K^+$ to that of the analogous Cabibbo favored $B^+\to D_s^-K^+π^+$ decay to be ${\cal R}_{\cal B} = 0.054 \pm 0.013 ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.006 ({\rm syst})$, which is consistent with the na\"ıve factorization model. We also observe a deviation from the three-body phase-space model for both studied decays.

Measurement of Branching Fractions and CP Asymmetries in B -> wK Decays and First Evidence of CP Violation in B0 -> wKS0

The results are obtained from the final data sample containing 772 x 10^(6) BBbar pairs collected at the Y(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. We obtain the branching fractions B(B0 -> omega K0) = (4.5 +/- 0.4 (stat) +/- 0.3 (syst)) x 10^(-6), B(B- -> omega K-) = (6.8 +/- 0.4 (stat) +/- 0.4 (syst)) x 10^(-6), which are in agreement with their respective current world averages. For the CP violating parameters, we obtain A(B0 -> omega KS) = -0.36 +/- 0.19 (stat) +/- 0.05 (syst), S(B0 -> omega KS) = +0.91 +/- 0.32 (stat) +/- 0.05 (syst), A(B- -> omega K-) = -0.03 +/- 0.04 (stat) +/- 0.01 syst), where A and S represent the direct and mixing-induced CP asymmetry, respectively. We find no evidence of CP violation in the decay channel B-->omega K-; however, we obtain the first evidence of CP violation in the B0 -> omega KS decay channel at the level of 3.1 standard deviations.

Measurement of TeV atmospheric muon charge ratio with the full OPERA data

The OPERA detector, designed to search for $ν_μ \to ν_τ$ oscillations in the CNGS beam, is located in the underground Gran Sasso laboratory, a privileged location to study TeV-scale cosmic rays. For the analysis here presented, the detector was used to measure the atmospheric muon charge ratio in the TeV region. OPERA collected charge-separated cosmic ray data between 2008 and 2012. More than 3 million atmospheric muon events were detected and reconstructed, among which about 110000 multiple muon bundles. The charge ratio $R_μ \equiv N_{μ^+}/N_{μ^-}$ was measured separately for single and for multiple muon events. The analysis exploited the inversion of the magnet polarity which was performed on purpose during the 2012 Run. The combination of the two data sets with opposite magnet polarities allowed minimizing systematic uncertainties and reaching an accurate determination of the muon charge ratio. Data were fitted to obtain relevant parameters on the composition of primary cosmic rays and the associated kaon production in the forward fragmentation region. In the surface energy range 1-20 TeV investigated by OPERA, $R_μ$ is well described by a parametric model including only pion and kaon contributions to the muon flux, showing no significant contribution of the prompt component. The energy independence supports the validity of Feynman scaling in the fragmentation region up to $200$ TeV/nucleon primary energy.

We report the mass differences with respect to the $Λ_{c}^{+}$ baryon $M(Σ_{c}(2455)^{0})-M(Λ_{c}^{+}) = 167.29\pm0.01\pm0.02$ MeV/$c^{2}$, $M(Σ_{c}(2455)^{++})-M(Λ_{c}^{+}) = 167.51\pm0.01\pm0.02$ MeV/$c^{2}$, $M(Σ_{c}(2520)^{0})-M(Λ_{c}^{+}) = 231.98\pm0.11\pm0.04$ MeV/$c^{2}$, $M(Σ_{c}(2520)^{++})-M(Λ_{c}^{+}) = 231.99\pm0.10\pm0.02$ MeV/$c^{2}$, and the decay widths $Γ(Σ_{c}(2455)^{0}) = 1.76\pm0.04^{+0.09}_{-0.21}$ MeV/$c^{2}$, $Γ(Σ_{c}(2455)^{++}) = 1.84\pm0.04^{+0.07}_{-0.20}$ MeV/$c^{2}$, $Γ(Σ_{c}(2520)^{0}) = 15.41\pm0.41^{+0.20}_{-0.32}$ MeV/$c^{2}$, $Γ(Σ_{c}(2520)^{++}) = 14.77\pm0.25^{+0.18}_{-0.30}$ MeV/$c^{2}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The isospin mass splittings are measured to be $M(Σ_{c}(2455)^{++})-M(Σ_{c}(2455)^{0})=0.22\pm0.01\pm0.01$ MeV/$c^{2}$ and $M(Σ_{c}(2520)^{++})-M(Σ_{c}(2520)^{0})=0.01\pm0.15\pm0.03$ MeV/$c^{2}$. These results are the most precise to date.

Observation of $D^0-\bar{D}^0$ Mixing in $e^+e^-$ Collisions

We observe $D^0-\bar{D}^0$ mixing in the decay $D^0\rightarrow K^+π^-$ using a data sample of integrated luminosity 976 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+e^-$ asymmetric-energy collider. We measure the mixing parameters ${x'}^2 = (0.09\pm0.22)\times 10^{-3}$ and $y' = (4.6\pm3.4)\times 10^{-3}$ and the ratio of doubly Cabibbo-suppressed to Cabibbo-favored decay rates $R_D = (3.53\pm0.13)\times 10^{-3}$, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic combined. Our measurement excludes the no-mixing hypothesis at the 5.1 standard deviation level.

Observation of a new charged charmoniumlike state in B -> J/psi K pi decays

We present the results of an amplitude analysis of anti-B0 -> J/psi K- pi+ decays. A new charged charmoniumlike state Zc(4200)+ decaying to J/psi pi+ is observed with a significance of 6.2 sigma. The mass and width of the Zc(4200)+ are 4196 +31-29 +17-13 MeV/c^2 and 370 +70-70 +70-132 MeV, respectively; the preferred assignment of the quantum numbers is J^P = 1^+. In addition, we find evidence for Zc(4430)+ -> J/psi pi+. The analysis is based on a 711 fb^-1 data sample collected by the Belle detector at the asymmetric-energy e+ e- collider KEKB.

Observation of nu_tau appearance in the CNGS beam with the OPERA experiment

The OPERA experiment is searching for nu_mu -> nu_tau oscillations in appearance mode i.e. via the direct detection of tau leptons in nu_tau charged current interactions. The evidence of nu_mu -> nu_tau appearance has been previously reported with three nu_tau candidate events using a sub-sample of data from the 2008-2012 runs. We report here a fourth nu_tau candidate event, with the tau decaying into a hadron, found after adding the 2012 run events without any muon in the final state to the data sample. Given the number of analysed events and the low background, nu_mu -> nu_tau oscillations are established with a significance of 4.2sigma.

Procedure for short-lived particle detection in the OPERA experiment and its application to charm decays

The OPERA experiment, designed to perform the first observation of $ν_μ\rightarrow ν_τ$ oscillations in appearance mode through the detection of the $τ$ leptons produced in $ν_τ$ charged current interactions, has collected data from 2008 to 2012. In the present paper, the procedure developed to detect $τ$ particle decays, occurring over distances of the order of 1 mm from the neutrino interaction point, is described in detail. The results of its application to the search for charmed hadrons are then presented as a validation of the methods for $ν_τ$ appearance detection.

Search for $B_{s}^{0}\rightarrowγγ$ and a measurement of the branching fraction for $B_{s}^{0}\rightarrowϕγ$

We search for the decay $B_{s}^{0}\rightarrowγγ$ and measure the branching fraction for $B_{s}^{0}\rightarrowϕγ$ using 121.4~$\textrm{fb}^{-1}$ of data collected at the $Υ(\mathrm{5}S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. The $B_{s}^{0}\rightarrowϕγ$ branching fraction is measured to be $(3.6 \pm 0.5 (\mathrm{stat.}) \pm 0.3 (\mathrm{syst.}) \pm 0.6 (f_{s})) \times 10^{-5}$, where $f_{s}$ is the fraction of $B_{s}^{(*)}\bar{B}_{s}^{(*)}$ in $b\bar{b}$ events. Our result is in good agreement with the theoretical predictions as well as with a recent measurement from LHCb. We observe no statistically significant signal for the decay $B_{s}^{0}\rightarrowγγ$ and set a $90\%$ confidence-level upper limit on its branching fraction at $ 3.1 \times 10^{-6}$. This constitutes a significant improvement over the previous result.

We report results of a study of doubly charmed baryons and charmed strange baryons. The analysis is performed using a 980 fb^-1 data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+e^- collider. We search for doubly charmed baryons Xi_cc^+(+) with the Lambda_c^+K^-pi^+(pi^+) and Xi_c^0pi^+(pi^+) final states. No significant signal is observed. We present a search for low-mass ($\leq 20 GeV/c^{2}$) weakly interacting massive particles(WIMPs), strong candidates of dark matter particles, using the low-background CsI(Tl) detector array of the Korea Invisible Mass Search (KIMS) experiment. With a total data exposure of 24,324.3kg$\cdot$days,we search for WIMP interaction signals produced by nuclei recoiling from WIMP-nuclear elastic scattering with visible energies between 2 and 4keV. The observed energy distribution of candidate events is consistent with null signals, and upper limits of the WIMP-proton spin-independent interaction are set with a 90% confidence level. Searches for Large-Scale Anisotropy in the Arrival Directions of Cosmic Rays Detected above Energy of $10^{19}$ eV at the Pierre Auger Observatory and the Telescope Array

Spherical harmonic moments are well-suited for capturing anisotropy at any scale in the flux of cosmic rays. An unambiguous measurement of the full set of spherical harmonic coefficients requires full-sky coverage. This can be achieved by combining data from observatories located in both the northern and southern hemispheres. To this end, a joint analysis using data recorded at the Telescope Array and the Pierre Auger Observatory above $10^{19}$ eV is presented in this work. The resulting multipolar expansion of the flux of cosmic rays allows us to perform a series of anisotropy searches, and in particular to report on the angular power spectrum of cosmic rays above $10^{19}$ eV. No significant deviation from isotropic expectations is found throughout the analyses performed. Upper limits on the amplitudes of the dipole and quadrupole moments are derived as a function of the direction in the sky, varying between 7% and 13% for the dipole and between 7% and 10% for a symmetric quadrupole.

Study of B^0 -> rho^0 rho^0 decays, implications for the CKM angle phi_2 and search for other B^0 decay modes with a four-pion final state

We present a study of the branching fraction of the decay B^0->rho0rho0 and the fraction of longitudinally polarized rho0 mesons in this decay. The results are obtained from the final data sample containing 772 million BBbar pairs collected at the Y(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. We find 166 +- 59 B^0 -> rho0 rho0 events (including systematic uncertainties), corresponding to a branching fraction of B(B^0->rho0rho0) = (1.02 +- 0.30 (stat) +- 0.15 (syst)) x 10^{-6} with a significance of 3.4 standard deviations and a longitudinal polarization fraction fL = 0.21^{+0.18}_{-0.22} (stat) +- 0.15 (syst). We use the longitudinal polarization fraction to determine the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix angle phi_2 = (84.9 +- 13.5) degrees through an isospin analysis in the B->rhorho system. We furthermore find 149 +- 49 B^0->f0rho0 events, corresponding to B(B^0->f0rho0) x B(f0->pi+pi-) = (0.78 +- 0.22 (stat) +- 0.11 (syst)) x 10^{-6}, with a significance of 3.1 standard deviations. We find no other significant contribution with the same final state, and set upper limits at 90% confidence level on the (product) branching fractions, B(B^0->pi+pi-pi+pi-)<11.2 x 10^{-6}, B(B^0->rho0pi+pi-)<12.0 x 10^{-6}, B(B^0->f0pi+pi-) x B(f0->pi+pi-) <3.0 x 10^{-6} and B(B^0->f0f0) x B(f0->pi+pi-)^{2} < 0.2 x 10^{-6}.

Study of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Ray Composition Using Telescope Array's Middle Drum Detector and Surface Array in Hybrid Mode

Previous measurements of the composition of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays(UHECRs) made by the High Resolution Fly's Eye(HiRes) and Pierre Auger Observatory(PAO) are seemingly contradictory, but utilize different detection methods, as HiRes was a stereo detector and PAO is a hybrid detector. The five year Telescope Array(TA) Middle Drum hybrid composition measurement is similar in some, but not all, respects in methodology to PAO, and good agreement is evident between data and a light, largely protonic, composition when comparing the measurements to predictions obtained with the QGSJetII-03 and QGSJet-01c models. These models are also in agreement with previous HiRes stereo measurements, confirming the equivalence of the stereo and hybrid methods. The data is incompatible with a pure iron composition, for all models examined, over the available range of energies. The elongation rate and mean values of Xmax are in good agreement with Pierre Auger Observatory data. This analysis is presented using two methods: data cuts using simple geometrical variables and a new pattern recognition technique.

We perform a partial wave analysis to distinguish among scalar [$B^0 \to ϕ(Kπ)^{*}_{0}$], vector [$B^0 \to ϕK^{*}(892)^{0}$] and tensor [$B^0 \to ϕK^{*}_{2}(1430)^{0}$] components, and determine the corresponding branching fractions to be $\mathcal{B}[B^0 \to ϕ(Kπ)^{*}_{0}] = (4.3 \pm 0.4 \pm 0.4) \times 10^{-6}$, $\mathcal{B}[B^0 \to ϕK^{*}(892)^{0}] = (10.4 \pm 0.5 \pm 0.6) \times 10^{-6}$ and $\mathcal{B}[B^0 \to ϕK^{*}_{2}(1430)^{0}] = (5.5 ^{+0.9}_{-0.7} \pm 1.0) \times 10^{-6}$. We also measure the longitudinal polarization fraction $f_L$ in $B^0 \to ϕK^{*}(892)^{0}$ and $B^0 \to ϕK^{*}_{2}(1430)^{0}$ decays to be $0.499 \pm 0.030 \pm 0.018$ and $0.918 ^{+0.029}_{-0.060} \pm 0.012$, respectively. The first quoted uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. In total, we measure 26 parameters related to branching fractions, polarization and CP violation in the $B^0 \to ϕK^{*}$ system. No evidence for CP violation is found.

Effects of pressure on the ferromagnetic state of the CDW compound SmNiC2

We report the pressure response of charge-density-wave (CDW) and ferromagnetic (FM) phases of the rare-earth intermetallic SmNiC2 up to 5.5 GPa. The CDW transition temperature (T_{CDW}), which is reflected as a sharp inflection in the electrical resistivity, is almost independent of pressure up to 2.18 GPa but is strongly enhanced at higher pressures, increasing from 155.7 K at 2.2 GPa to 279.3 K at 5.5 GPa. Commensurate with the sharp increase in T_{CDW}, the first-order FM phase transition, which decreases with applied pressure, bifurcates into the upper (T_{M1}) and lower (T_c) phase transitions and the lower transition changes its nature to second order above 2.18 GPa. Enhancement both in the residual resistivity and the Fermi-liquid T^2 coefficient A near 3.8 GPa suggests abundant magnetic quantum fluctuations that arise from the possible presence of a FM quantum critical point.

High-statistics study of K^0_S pair production in two-photon collisions

We report a high-statistics measurement of the differential cross section of the process gamma gamma --> K^0_S K^0_S in the range 1.05 GeV <= W <= 4.00 GeV, where W is the center-of-mass energy of the colliding photons, using 972 fb^{-1} of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+ e^- collider operated at and near the Upsilon-resonance region. The differential cross section is fitted by parameterized S-, D_0-, D_2-, G_0- and G_2-wave amplitudes. In the D_2 wave, the f_2(1270), a_2(1320) and f_2'(1525) are dominant and a resonance, the f_2(2200), is also present. The f_0(1710) and possibly the f_0(2500) are seen in the S wave. The mass, total width and product of the two-photon partial decay width and decay branching fraction to the K bar{K} state Gamma_{gamma gamma}B(K bar{K}) are extracted for the f_2'(1525), f_0(1710), f_2(2200) and f_0(2500). The destructive interference between the f_2(1270) and a_2(1320) is confirmed by measuring their relative phase. The parameters of the charmonium states chi_{c0} and chi_{c2} are updated. Possible contributions from the chi_{c0}(2P) and chi_{c2}(2P) states are discussed. A new upper limit for the branching fraction of the P- and CP-violating decay channel eta_c --> K^0_S K^0_S is reported. The detailed behavior of the cross section is updated and compared with QCD-based calculations.

The results are obtained from the final data sample containing 772 million BBbar pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. We obtain the CP violation parameters Acp = +0.33 +/- 0.06 (stat) +/- 0.03 (syst) and Scp = -0.64 +/- 0.08 (stat) +/- 0.03 (syst), where Acp and Scp represent the direct and mixing-induced CP asymmetry, respectively. Using an isospin analysis including results from other Belle measurements, we find 23.8 < phi2 < 66.8 degrees is disfavored at the 1 sigma level, where phi2 is one of the three interior angles of the CKM unitarity triangle related to B_{u,d} decays.

Measurement of the Decays $B^0_s\to J/ψ\,ϕ(1020)$, $B^0_{s}\to J/ψ\,f'_2(1525)$ and $B^0_s\to J/ψ\,K^+K^-$ at Belle

We report a measurement of the branching fraction of the decay $B^0_s\to J/ψ\,ϕ(1020)$, evidence and a branching fraction measurement for $B^0_s\to J/ψ\,f'_2(1525)$, and the determination of the total $B^0_s\to J/ψ\,K^+K^-$ branching fraction, including the resonant and non-resonant contributions to the $K^+K^-$ channel. We also determine the $S$-wave contribution within the $ϕ(1020)$ mass region. The absolute branching fractions are $\mathcal{B}[B^0_s\to J/ψ\,ϕ(1020)]=(1.25 \pm 0.07\left(\mathrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.08\left(\mathrm{syst}\right)\pm 0.22\left(f_s\right))\times 10^{-3}$, $\mathcal{B}[B^0_s\to J/ψ\,f'_2(1525)]=(0.26\pm 0.06\left(\mathrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.02\left(\mathrm{syst}\right) \pm 0.05\left(f_s\right))\times 10^{-3}$ and $\mathcal{B}[B^0_s\to J/ψ\,K^+K^-] = (1.01\pm 0.09\left(\mathrm{stat}\right) \pm 0.10\left(\mathrm{syst}\right)\pm 0.18\left(f_s\right))\times 10^{-3}$, where the last systematic error is due to the branching fraction of $b\bar{b}\to B^{(*)}_s B^{(*)}_s$. The branching fraction ratio is found to be $\mathcal{B}[B^0_s\to J/ψ\,f'_2(1525)]/\mathcal{B}[B^0_s\to J/ψ\,ϕ(1020)]=(21.5\pm 4.9\left(\mathrm{stat}\right) \pm2.6\left(\mathrm{syst}\right))%$. All results are based on a 121.4 fb$^{-1}$ data sample collected at the $Υ(5S)$ resonance by the Belle experiment at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider.

Measurement of the Wrong-Sign Decay D0 -> K+ pi- pi+ pi-

A measurement of the rate for the "wrong-sign" decay D0 -> K+ pi- pi+ pi- relative to that for the "right-sign" decay D0 -> K- pi+ pi+ pi- is presented. Using 791 fb-1 of data collected with the Belle detector, we obtain a branching fraction ratio of R_WS = [0.324 +- 0.008 (stat) +- 0.007 (sys)]%. Multiplying this ratio by the world average value for the branching fraction B(D0 -> K- pi+ pi+ pi-) gives a branching fraction B(D0 -> K+ pi- pi+ pi-) = (2.61 +- 0.06 +0.09 -0.08) x 10-4.

Measurements of Branching Fractions and Direct CP Asymmetries for B -> K pi, B->pi pi and B->to KK Decays

We report measurements of the branching fractions and direct CP asymmetries (A_{CP}) for B->K pi, pi pi and KK decays (but not pi^0 pi^0) based on the final data sample of 772x10^6 B B-bar pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+ e^- collider. We set a 90% confidence-level upper limit for K^+- K^-+ at 2.0x10^{-7}; all other decays are observed with branching fractions ranging from 10^{-6} to 10^{-5}. In the $B^0/B^0-bar -> K^+-π^-+ mode, we confirm Belle's previously reported large A_{CP} with a value of -0.069 +- 0.014 +- 0.007 and a significance of 4.4 sigma. For all other flavor-specific modes, we find A_{CP} values consistent with zero, including A_{CP}(K^+- π^0) = +0.043 +- 0.024 +- 0.007 with 1.8 sigma significance. The difference of CP asymmetry between B^+- -> K^+- pi^0 and B^0/B^0-bar -> K^+-π^-+ is found to be Delta A_{K pi} equiv A_{CP} (K^+ pi^0) - A_{CP}(K^+ pi^-) = +0.112 +- 0.027 +- 0.007 with 4.0 sigma significance. We also calculate the ratios of partial widths for the B-> K pi decays. Using our results, we test the validity of the sum rule A_{CP}(K^+ pi^-) + A_{CP}(K^0π^+) x Gamma(K^0π^+)/Gamma(K^+ pi^-)} - A_{CP}(K^+ pi^0)x 2Gamma(K^+ pi^0)/Gamma(K^+ pi^-) - A_{CP}(K^0 pi^0)x 2Gamma(K^0 pi^0)/Gamma(K^+ pi^-) = 0 and obtain a sum of -0.270 +- 0.132 +- 0.060 with 1.9 sigma significance.

Measurements of branching fractions of leptonic and hadronic Ds+ meson decays and extraction of the Ds+ meson decay constant

We present measurements of absolute branching fractions of hadronic and leptonic Ds+ decays to K- K+ pi+, anti-K0 K+, eta pi+, mu+ nu_mu and tau+ nu_tau and report a search for the leptonic Ds+ to e+ nu_e decays. The results are obtained from a data sample of 913 fb^-1 collected at or near the Y(4S) and Y(5S) resonances with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. The branching fractions of hadronic decays are measured to be Br(Ds+ -> K- K+ pi+) = (5.06 +- 0.15 +- 0.21)%, Br(Ds+ -> anti-K0 K+) = (2.95 +- 0.11 +- 0.09)%, and Br(Ds+ -> eta pi+) = (1.82 +- 0.14 +- 0.07)%, where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The branching fractions of leptonic decays are measured to be Br(Ds+ -> mu+ nu_mu) = (0.531 +- 0.028 +- 0.020)%, and Br(Ds+ -> tau+ nu_tau) = (5.70 +- 0.21 +0.31-0.30)%, which are combined to determine the Ds+ meson decay constant f_Ds = (255.5 +- 4.2 +- 5.1) MeV. We find no significant signal for Ds+ -> e+ nu_e decays and set an upper limit of Br(Ds+ -> e+ nu_e) < 1.0 (0.83) x 10^-4 at 95% (90%) confidence level.

New results on $ν_μ\to ν_τ$ appearance with the OPERA experiment in the CNGS beam

The OPERA neutrino experiment is designed to perform the first observation of neutrino oscillations in direct appearance mode in the $ν_μ\to ν_τ$ channel, via the detection of the $τ$-leptons created in charged current $ν_τ$ interactions. The detector, located in the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory, consists of an emulsion/lead target with an average mass of about 1.2 kt, complemented by electronic detectors. It is exposed to the CERN Neutrinos to Gran Sasso beam, with a baseline of 730 km and a mean energy of 17 GeV. The observation of the first $ν_τ$ candidate event and the analysis of the 2008-2009 neutrino sample have been reported in previous publications. This work describes substantial improvements in the analysis and in the evaluation of the detection efficiencies and backgrounds using new simulation tools. The analysis is extended to a sub-sample of 2010 and 2011 data, resulting from an electronic detector-based pre-selection, in which an additional $ν_τ$ candidate has been observed. The significance of the two events in terms of a $ν_μ\to ν_τ$ oscillation signal is of 2.40 $σ$.

Precision measurement of charged pion and kaon differential cross sections in electron-positron annihilation at Q = 10.52 GeV

Measurements of inclusive differential cross sections for charged pion and kaon production in electron-positron annihilation have been carried out at a center-of-mass energy of Q = 10.52 GeV. The measurements were performed with the Belle detector at the KEKB electron-positron collider using a data sample containing 113 million e+e- -> qqbar events, where q={u,d,s,c}. We present charge-integrated differential cross sections dσ_h+-/dz for h+- = pi+-, K+- as a function of the relative hadron energy z = 2*E_h / sqrt{s} from 0.2 to 0.98. The combined statistical and systematic uncertainties for pi+- (K+-) are 4% (4%) at z ~ 0.6 and 15% (24%) at z ~ 0.9. The cross sections are the first measurements of the z-dependence of pion and kaon production for z > 0.7 as well as the first precision cross section measurements at a center-of-mass energy far below the Z^0 resonance used by the experiments at LEP and SLC.

Search for $ν_μ\rightarrow ν_e$ oscillations with the OPERA experiment in the CNGS beam

A first result of the search for \numu $\rightarrow$ \nue oscillations in the OPERA experiment, located at the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory, is presented. The experiment looked for the appearance of \nue in the CNGS neutrino beam using the data collected in 2008 and 2009. Data are compatible with the non-oscillation hypothesis in the three-flavour mixing model. A further analysis of the same data constrains the non-standard oscillation parameters $θ_{new}$ and $Δm^2_{new}$ suggested by the LSND and MiniBooNE experiments. For large $Δm^{2}_{new}$ values ($>$0.1 eV$^{2}$), the OPERA 90% C.L. upper limit on sin$^{2}(2θ_{new})$ based on a Bayesian statistical method reaches the value $7.2 \times 10^{-3}$.

Search for B -> h(*) nu nubar with the full Belle Y(4S) data sample

We report a search for the rare decays B -> h(*) nu nubar, where h(*) stands for K+, Ks0, K*+, K*0, pi+, pi0, rho+, rho0 and phi. The results are obtained from a 711 fb-1 data sample that contains 772 million BB pairs collected at the Y(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e- collider. Search for Bottomonium States in Exclusive Radiative Upsilon(2S) Decays

We search for bottomonium states in Upsilon(2S)-> (bb-bar) gamma decays with an integrated luminosity of 24.7fb^-1 recorded at the Upsilon(2S) resonance with the Belle detector at KEK, containing (157.8+-3.6) X 10^6 Upsilon(2S) events. The (bb-bar) system is reconstructed in 26 exclusive hadronic final states composed of charged pions, kaons, protons, and K^0_S mesons. We find no evidence for the state recently observed around 9975 MeV (X_(bb-bar)) in an analysis based on a data sample of 9.3 X 10^6 Upsilon(2S) events collected with the CLEO III detector. We set a 90 % confidence-level upper limit on the branching fraction B[Upsilon(2S)-> X_(bb-bar) gamma] X \sum_i{B[X_(bb-bar)-> h_i]}< 4.9 X 10^-6, summed over the exclusive hadronic final states employed in our analysis. This result is an order of magnitude smaller than the measurement reported with CLEO data. We also set an upper limit for the eta_b(1S) state of B[Upsilon(2S)-> eta_b(1S) gamma] X \sum_i{B[eta_b(1S)-> h_i]}< 3.7 X 10^-6.

Search for correlations of the arrival directions of ultra-high energy cosmic ray with extragalactic objects as observed by the telescope array experiment

We search for correlations between positions of extragalactic objects and arrival directions of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs) with primary energy $E \ge 40$ EeV as observed by the surface detector array of the Telescope Array (TA) experiment during the first 40 months of operation. We examined several public astronomical object catalogs, including the Veron-Cetty and Veron catalog of active galactic nuclei. We counted the number of TA events correlated with objects in each catalog as a function of three parameters: the maximum angular separation between a TA event and an object, the minimum energy of the events, and the maximum redshift of the objects. We determine combinations of these parameters which maximize the correlations, and calculate the chance probabilities of having the same levels of correlations from an isotropic distribution of UHECR arrival directions. No statistically significant correlations are found when penalties for scanning over the above parameters and for searching in several catalogs are taken into account.

Study of $e^+ e^- \to π^+ π^- J/ψ$ and Observation of a Charged Charmonium-like State at Belle

The cross section for $e^+ e^- \to π^+ π^- J/ψ$ between 3.8 GeV and 5.5 GeV is measured with a 967 fb$^{-1}$ data sample collected by the Belle detector at or near the $Υ(nS)$ ($n = 1,\ 2,\ ...,\ 5$) resonances. The Y(4260) state is observed, and its resonance parameters are determined. In addition, an excess of $π^+ π^- J/ψ$ production around 4 GeV is observed. This feature can be described by a Breit-Wigner parameterization with properties that are consistent with the Y(4008) state that was previously reported by Belle. In a study of $Y(4260) \to π^+ π^- J/ψ$ decays, a structure is observed in the $M(π^\pm\jpsi)$ mass spectrum with $5.2σ$ significance, with mass $M=(3894.5\pm 6.6\pm 4.5) {\rm MeV}/c^2$ and width $Γ=(63\pm 24\pm 26)$ MeV/$c^{2}$, where the errors are statistical and systematic, respectively. This structure can be interpreted as a new charged charmonium-like state.

Study of Exclusive B->X_u l nu Decays and Extraction of |V_{ub}| using Full Reconstruction Tagging at the Belle Experiment

We report the results of a study of the exclusive semileptonic decays B->pi0lnu, B->pi+lnu, B->rho0lnu, B->rho+lnu and B->omegalnu, where l represents an electron or a muon. The events are tagged by fully reconstructing a second B meson in the event in a hadronic decay mode. The measured branching fractions are Br(B->pi0lnu) = (0.80 +- 0.08 +- 0.04)x10^-4, Br(B->pi+lnu) = (1.49 +- 0.09 +- 0.07)x10^-4, Br(B->rho0lnu) = (1.83 +- 0.10 +- 0.10)x10^-4, Br(B->rho+lnu) = (3.22 +- 0.27 +- 0.24)x10^-4, and Br(B->omegalnu) =(1.07 +- 0.16 +- 0.07)x10^-4, where the first error is statistical and the second one is systematic. The obtained branching fractions are inclusive of soft photon emission. We also determine the branching fractions as a function of the 4-momentum transfer squared to the leptonic system q^2=(p_l+p_nu)^2, where p_l and p_nu are the lepton and neutrino 4-momenta, respectively. Using the pion modes, a recent LCSR calculation, lattice QCD results and a model-independent description of the hadronic form factor, a value of the CKM matrix element |V_{ub}| = (3.52 +- 0.29)x10^-3 is extracted. For the first time, a charmless state with invariant mass greater than 1 GeV/c^2, which might be dominated by the decay B->f2lnu, is observed. These results are obtained from a 711 1/fb data sample that contains 772 millions BB pairs, collected near the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+ e^- collider.

The Cosmic Ray Energy Spectrum Observed with the Surface Detector of the Telescope Array Experiment

The Telescope Array (TA) collaboration has measured the energy spectrum of ultra-high energy cosmic rays with primary energies above 1.6 x 10^(18) eV. This measurement is based upon four years of observation by the surface detector component of TA. The spectrum shows a dip at an energy of 4.6 x 10^(18) eV and a steepening at 5.4 x 10^(19) eV which is consistent with the expectation from the GZK cutoff. We present the results of a technique, new to the analysis of ultra-high energy cosmic ray surface detector data, that involves generating a complete simulation of ultra-high energy cosmic rays striking the TA surface detector. The procedure starts with shower simulations using the CORSIKA Monte Carlo program where we have solved the problems caused by use of the "thinning" approximation. This simulation method allows us to make an accurate calculation of the acceptance of the detector for the energies concerned.

The Energy Spectrum of Ultra-High-Energy Cosmic Rays Measured by the Telescope Array FADC Fluorescence Detectors in Monocular Mode

We present a measurement of the energy spectrum of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays performed by the Telescope Array experiment using monocular observations from its two new FADC-based fluorescence detectors. After a short description of the experiment, we describe the data analysis and event reconstruction procedures. Since the aperture of the experiment must be calculated by Monte Carlo simulation, we describe this calculation and the comparisons of simulated and real data used to verify the validity of the aperture calculation. Finally, we present the energy spectrum calculated from the merged monocular data sets of the two FADC-based detectors, and also the combination of this merged spectrum with an independent, previously published monocular spectrum measurement performed by Telescope Array's third fluorescence detector (Abu-Zayyad {\it et al.}, {Astropart. Measurement of the CP-violation Parameter sin2$ϕ_1$ with a New Tagging Method at the $Υ(5S)$ Resonance

We report a measurement of the CP-violation parameter sin2$ϕ_1$ at the $Υ(5S)$ resonance using a new tagging method, called "$B$-$π$ tagging." In $Υ(5S)$ decays containing a neutral $B$ meson, a charged $B$, and a charged pion, the neutral $B$ is reconstructed in the $J/ψK_S^0$ CP-eigenstate decay channel. The initial flavor of the neutral $B$ meson at the moment of the $Υ(5S)$ decay is opposite to that of the charged $B$ and may thus be inferred from the charge of the pion without reconstructing the charged $B$. From the asymmetry between $B$-$π^+$ and $B$-$π^-$ tagged $J/ψK_S^0$ yields, we determine sin2$ϕ_1$ = 0.57 $\pm$ 0.58(stat) $\pm$ 0.06(syst). The results are based on 121 fb$^{-1}$ of data recorded by the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+ e^-$ collider.

We determine the branching fractions to be $\mathcal{B}(B^{0} \to D^{+}D^{-})=(2.12 \pm 0.16 \pm 0.18)\times 10^{-4}$ and $\mathcal{B}(B^{0} \to D^{*\pm}D^{\mp}=(6.14 \pm 0.29 \pm 0.50)\times 10^{-4}$. We measure CP asymmetry parameters $\mathcal{S}_{D^{+}D^{-}} = -1.06_{-0.14}^{+0.21} \pm 0.08$ and $\mathcal{C}_{D^{+}D^{-}} = -0.43 \pm 0.16 \pm 0.05$ in $B^{0} \to D^{+}D^{-}$ and $\mathcal{A}_{D^{*}D} = +0.06 \pm 0.05 \pm 0.02$, $\mathcal{S}_{D^{*}D} = -0.78 \pm 0.15 \pm 0.05$, $\mathcal{C}_{D^{*}D} = -0.01 \pm 0.11 \pm 0.04$, $Δ\mathcal{S}_{D^{*}D} = -0.13 \pm 0.15 \pm 0.04$ and $Δ\mathcal{C}_{D^{*}D} = +0.12 \pm 0.11 \pm 0.03$ in $B^{0} \to D^{*\pm}D^{\mp}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. We exclude the conservation of CP symmetry in both decays at equal to or greater than $4σ$ significance.

Observation of ψ(4040) and ψ(4160) decay into ηJ/ψ

The cross section for e^+e^- \to ηJ/ψbetween \sqrt{s}=3.8 GeV/c^2 and 5.3 GeV/c^2 is measured via initial state radiation using 980 fb^{-1} of data on and around the Υ(nS)(n=1,2,3,4,5) resonances collected with the Belle detector at KEKB. Two resonant structures at the ψ(4040) and ψ(4160) are observed in the ηJ/ψinvariant mass distribution. Fitting the mass spectrum with the coherent sum of two Breit-Wigner functions, one obtains BR(ψ(4040)\toηJ/ψ)\cdotΓ_{ee}^{ψ(4040)} = (4.8\pm0.9\pm1.4) eV and BR(ψ(4160)\toηJ/ψ)\cdotΓ_{ee}^{ψ(4160)} = (4.0\pm0.8\pm1.4) eV for one solution and BR(ψ(4040)\toηJ/ψ)\cdotΓ_{ee}^{ψ(4040)} = (11.2\pm1.3\pm1.9) eV and BR(ψ(4160)\toηJ/ψ)\cdotΓ_{ee}^{ψ(4160)} = (13.8\pm1.3\pm2.0) eV for the other solution, where the first errors are statistical and the second are systematic. This is the first measurement of this hadronic transition mode of these two states, and the partial widths to ηJ/ψare found to be about 1 MeV. There is no evidence for the Y(4260), Y(4360), ψ(4415), or Y(4660) in the ηJ/ψfinal state, and upper limits of their production rates in e^+e^- annihilation are determined.

Precise measurement of the CP violation parameter sin2phi_1 in B0-->(c\bar c)K0 decays

We present a precise measurement of the CP violation parameter sin2phi_1 and the direct CP violation parameter A_f using the final data sample of 772x10^6 B\bar B pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. One neutral B meson is reconstructed in a J/psi K0S, psi(2S) K0S, chi_c1 K0S or J/psi K0L CP-eigenstate and its flavor is identified from the decay products of the accompanying B meson. From the distribution of proper time intervals between the two B decays, we obtain the following CP violation parameters: sin2phi_1=0.667+-0.023(stat)+-0.012(syst) and A_f=0.006+-0.016(stat)+-0.012(syst).

Search for $B^{0}$ decays to invisible final states at Belle

The signal is identified by fully reconstructing a hadronic decay of the accompanying $B$ meson and requiring no other particles in the event. No significant signal is observed, and we obtain an upper limit of $1.3 \times 10^{-4}$ at the 90% confidence level for the branching fraction of invisible $B^{0}$ decay.

Search for Anisotropy of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays with the Telescope Array Experiment

We study the anisotropy of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Ray (UHECR) events collected by the Telescope Array (TA) detector in the first 40 months of operation. Following earlier studies, we examine event sets with energy thresholds of 10 EeV, 40 EeV, and 57 EeV. We find that the distributions of the events in right ascension and declination are compatible with an isotropic distribution in all three sets. We then compare with previously reported clustering of the UHECR events at small angular scales. No significant clustering is found in the TA data. We then check the events with E>57 EeV for correlations with nearby active galactic nuclei. No significant correlation is found. Finally, we examine all three sets for correlations with the large-scale structure of the Universe. We find that the two higher-energy sets are compatible with both an isotropic distribution and the hypothesis that UHECR sources follow the matter distribution of the Universe (the LSS hypothesis), while the event set with E>10 EeV is compatible with isotropy and is not compatible with the LSS hypothesis at 95% CL unless large deflection angles are also assumed. We show that accounting for UHECR deflections in a realistic model of the Galactic magnetic field can make this set compatible with the LSS hypothesis.

Search for the decay $B^0\to DK^{*0}$ followed by $D\to K^-π^+$

We report a study of the decay $B^0\rightarrow D K^+π^-$ followed by $D\rightarrow K^-π^+$, where $D$ indicates $D^0$ or $\bar{D}^0$. We reconstruct the $D K^+π^-$ state in a phase space corresponding to $D K^{*}(892)^0$. The CP-violating angle $ϕ_3$ affects its decay rate via the interference between $b\rightarrow u$ and $b\rightarrow c$ transitions. Study of the Hadronic Transitions $Υ$(2S)$\rightarrow (η,π^0)Υ$(1S) at Belle

We study the rare hadronic transitions $Υ(2S)\rightarrow Υ(1S)η$ and $Υ(2S)\rightarrow Υ(1S)π^0$ using a sample of 158 $\times 10^6$ $Υ(2S)$ decays collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. We observe the $η$ meson decay to $γγ$ and $π^+π^-π^0$ final states; the $Υ(1S)$ is reconstructed in the $μ^+μ^-$ and $e^+e^-$ decay modes. We measure the ratios of branching fractions (${\mathcal B}$) $\frac{{\mathcal B}(Υ(2S)\rightarrowΥ(1S)η)}{{\mathcal B}(Υ(2S)\rightarrowΥ(1S)π^+π^-)}$ = (1.99$\pm$0.14 (stat) $\pm$0.11 (syst)) $\times 10^{-3}$ and $\frac{{\mathcal B}(Υ(2S)\rightarrowΥ(1S)π^0)}{{\mathcal B}(Υ(2S)\rightarrowΥ(1S)π^+π^-)} < 2.3 \times 10^{-4}$ at the 90% confidence level (CL). The Energy Spectrum of Telescope Array's Middle Drum Detector and the Direct Comparison to the High Resolution Fly's Eye Experiment

The Telescope Array's Middle Drum fluorescence detector was instrumented with telescopes refurbished from the High Resolution Fly's Eye's HiRes-1 site. The data observed by Middle Drum in monocular mode was analyzed via the HiRes-1 profile-constrained geometry reconstruction technique and utilized the same calibration techniques enabling a direct comparison of the energy spectra and energy scales between the two experiments. The spectrum measured using the Middle Drum telescopes is based on a three-year exposure collected between December 16, 2007 and December 16, 2010. The calculated difference between the spectrum of the Middle Drum observations and the published spectrum obtained by the data collected by the HiRes-1 site allows the HiRes-1 energy scale to be transferred to Middle Drum. The HiRes energy scale is applied to the entire Telescope Array by making a comparison between Middle Drum monocular events and hybrid events that triggered both Middle Drum and the Telescope Array's scintillator Ground Array.

Enhancement of the in-field Jc of MgB2 via SiCl4 doping

In this work, we present the following important results: 1) We introduce a new Si source, liquid SiCl4, which is free of C, to significantly enhance the irreversibility field (Hirr), the upper critical field (Hc2), and the critical current density (Jc), with little reduction in the critical temperature (Tc). 2) Although Si can not incorporate into the crystal lattice, we found a reduction in the a-axis lattice parameter, to the same extent as for carbon doping. 3) The SiCl4 treated MgB2 shows much higher Jc with superior field dependence above 20 K than undoepd MgB2 and MgB2 doped with various carbon sources. 3) We provide an alternative interpretation for the reduction of the a lattice parameter in C- and non-C doped MgB2. 4). We introduce a new parameter, RHH (Hc2/Hirr), which can clearly reflect the degree of flux pinning enhancement, providing us with guidance for further enhancing Jc. 5) We have found that spatial variation in the charge carrier mean free path is responsible for the flux pinning mechanism in the SiCl4 treated MgB2 with large in-field Jc.

New air fluorescence detectors employed in the Telescope Array experiment

Since 2007, the Telescope Array (TA) experiment, based in Utah, USA, has been observing ultra high energy cosmic rays to understand their origins. The experiment involves a surface detector (SD) array and three fluorescence detector (FD) stations. FD stations, installed surrounding the SD array, measure the air fluorescence light emitted from extensive air showers (EASs) for precise determination of their energies and species. The detectors employed at one of the three FD stations were relocated from the High Resolution Fly's Eye experiment. At the other two stations, newly designed detectors were constructed for the TA experiment. An FD consists of a primary mirror and a camera equipped with photomultiplier tubes. To obtain the EAS parameters with high accuracies, understanding the FD optical characteristics is important. In this paper, we report the characteristics and installation of new FDs and the performances of the FD components. The results of the monitored mirror reflectance during the observation time are also described in this report.

d-d Excitations in Bilayer Manganites Probed by Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering

We report a high resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering investigation of the bilayer manganites La$_{2-2x}$Sr$_{1+2x}$Mn$_2$O$_7$ with $x = 0.36$ and $0.5$. The momentum dependence along the crystallographic $(110)$ direction for energy losses $1\,\rm{eV} \leq ΔE \leq 15\,\rm{eV}$ has been measured in detail with the data analysis focusing on the energy loss region $1\,\rm{eV} \leq ΔE \leq 5\,\rm{eV}$, which includes a strong peak located at $ΔE \approx 2\,\rm{eV}$. We observe a clear dispersion of up to $0.5\,\rm{eV}$ in the measured $\textbf{q}$ range, which is direct evidence of the non-local character of this excitation. Further, we found that the intensity in this low energy region strongly depends on both the reduced wave vector $\textbf{q} = (h, h, 0)$, $h = 0.1 - 0.5$, and temperature, i.e. different ordered phases. Results can be explained via an intersite $d-d$ charge transfer excitation, proposed for pseudo-cubic manganites, where the hopping rate is strongly increased (decreased) by ferromagnetic (antiferromagnetic) alignment of neighboring in-plane Mn ion core spins.

Graphene doping to enhance flux pinning and supercurrent carrying ability in magnesium diboride superconductor

It has been shown that graphene doping is sufficient to lead to an improvement in the critical current density - field performance (Jc(B)), with little change in the transition temperature in MgB2. At 3.7 at% graphene doping of MgB2 an optimal enhancement in Jc(B) was reached by a factor of 30 at 5 K and 10 T, compared to the un-doped sample. The results suggested that effective carbon substitutions by grapheme, 2D nature of grapheme and the strain effect induced by difference thermal coefficient between single grapheme sheet and MgB2 superconductor may play an important role in flux pinning enhancement.

Measurement of CP violating asymmetries in B^0 -> K^+K^- K^0_S decays with a time-dependent Dalitz approach

We report a measurement of $CP$ violating asymmetries in $B^0(\overline{B}^0) \to K^+ K^- K^0_S$ decays with a time-dependent Dalitz approach. This analysis is based on a data sample of $657\times 10^6$ $B\overline{B}$ pairs accumulated at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. As the result of an unbinned maximum likelihood fit to the selected candidates, the mixing-induced and direct $CP$ violation parameters, $ϕ^{\rm eff}_1$ and ${\cal A}_{CP}$ are obtained for $B^0 \to ϕ(1020) K^0_S$, $B^0 \to f_0(980) K^0_S$ and other $B^0 \to K^+ K^- K^0_S$ decays. We find four solutions that describe the data. There are \{eqnarray*} ϕ_1^{\rm eff}(B^0\to ϕ(1020) K^0_S) & = & (32.2 \pm 9.0 \pm 2.6 \pm 1.4)^{\circ}; ϕ_1^{\rm eff}(B^0\to ϕ(1020) K^0_S) & = & (26.2 \pm 8.8 \pm 2.7 \pm 1.2)^{\circ};\\ ϕ_1^{\rm eff}(B^0\to ϕ(1020) K^0_S) & = & (27.3 \pm 8.6 \pm 2.8 \pm 1.3)^{\circ}\; {\rm and}\\ ϕ_1^{\rm eff}(B^0\to ϕ(1020) K^0_S) & = & (24.3 \pm 8.0 \pm 2.9 \pm 5.2)^{\circ}.{eqnarray*}\ The values for the $CP$ violating phase in $B^0\to ϕ(1020) K^0_S$ are similar but other properties of the Dalitz plot are quite different for the four solutions. These four solutions have consistent $ϕ^{\rm eff}_1$ values for all three $B$ meson decay channels and none of them deviates significantly from the values measured in $B \to (c\bar{c}) K^0$ decays with the currently available statistics. In addition, we find no significant direct $CP$ violation.

Observation of Bs->Ds(*)+Ds(*)- using e+e- collisions and a determination of the Bs-Bsbar width difference ΔΓ_s

We have made the first observation of Bs->Ds(*)+Ds(*)- decays using 23.6 fb-1 of data recorded by the Belle experiment running on the Upsilon(5S) resonance. The branching fractions are measured to be B(B^0_s\ra D^+_s D^-_s) = (1.0\,^{+0.4}_{-0.3}\,^{+0.3}_{-0.2})%, B(B^0_s\ra D^{*\pm}_s D^{\mp}_s) = (2.8\,^{+0.8}_{-0.7}\,\pm 0.7)%, and B(B^0_s\ra D^{*+}_s D^{*-}_s) = (3.1\,^{+1.2}_{-1.0}\,\pm 0.8)%; the sum is B(B^0_s\ra D^{(*)+}_s D^{(*)-}_s) = (6.9\,^{+1.5}_{-1.3}\,\pm 1.9)%. Assuming Bs->Ds(*)+Ds(*)- saturates decays to CP-even final states, the branching fraction determines the ratio ΔΓ_s/cos(ϕ), where ΔΓ_s is the difference in widths between the two Bs-Bsbar mass eigenstates, and ϕis a CP-violating weak phase. Taking CP violation to be negligibly small, we obtain ΔΓ_s/Γ_s = 0.147^{+0.036}_{-0.030}(stat.)^{+0.044}_{-0.042}(syst.), where Γ_s is the mean decay width.

Three- and four-nucleon absorption processes observed in the $K^-$-$^4$He reaction at rest

Evidence for a Non-Uniform Initial Mass Function in the Local Universe

Many results in modern astrophysics rest on the notion that the Initial Mass Function (IMF) is universal. Our observations of HI selected galaxies in the light of H-alpha and the far-ultraviolet (FUV) challenge this notion. The flux ratio H-alpha/FUV from these two star formation tracers shows strong correlations with the surface-brightness in H-alpha and the R band: Low Surface Brightness (LSB) galaxies have lower ratios compared to High Surface Brightness galaxies and to expectations from equilibrium star formation models using commonly favored IMF parameters. Weaker but significant correlations of H-alpha/FUV with luminosity, rotational velocity and dynamical mass are found as well as a systematic trend with morphology. The correlated variations of H-alpha/FUV with other global parameters are thus part of the larger family of galaxy scaling relations. The H-alpha/FUV correlations can not be due to dust correction errors, while systematic variations in the star formation history can not explain the trends with both H-alpha and R surface brightness. LSB galaxies are unlikely to have a higher escape fraction of ionizing photons considering their high gas fraction, and color-magnitude diagrams. The most plausible explanation for the correlations are systematic variations of the upper mass limit and/or slope of the IMF at the upper end. We outline a scenario of pressure driving the correlations by setting the efficiency of the formation of the dense star clusters where the highest mass stars form. Our results imply that the star formation rate measured in a galaxy is highly sensitive to the tracer used in the measurement. A non-universal IMF also calls into question the interpretation of metal abundance patterns in dwarf galaxies and star formation histories derived from color magnitude diagrams. Abridged.

Outlying HII Regions in HI-Selected Galaxies

We present results from the first systematic search for outlying HII regions, as part of a sample of 96 emission-line point sources (referred to as ELdots - emission-line dots) derived from the NOAO Survey for Ionization in Neutral Gas Galaxies (SINGG). Our automated ELdot-finder searches SINGG narrow-band and continuum images for high equivalent width point sources outside the optical radius of the target galaxy (> 2 X r25 in the R-band). Follow-up longslit spectroscopy and deep GALEX images (exposure time > 1000 s) distinguish outlying HII regions from background galaxies whose strong emission lines ([OIII], Hbeta or [OII]) have been redshifted into the SINGG bandpass. We find that these deep GALEX images can serve as a substitute for spectroscopic follow-up because outlying HII regions separate cleanly from background galaxies in color-color space. We identify seven SINGG systems with outlying massive star formation that span a large range in Halpha luminosities corresponding to a few O stars in the most nearby cases, and unresolved dwarf satellite companion galaxies in the most distant cases. Six of these seven systems feature galaxies with nearby companions or interacting galaxies. Furthermore, our results indicate that some outlying HII regions are linked to the extended-UV disks discovered by GALEX, representing emission from the most massive O stars among a more abundant population of lower mass (or older) star clusters. The overall frequency of outlying HII regions in this sample of gas-rich galaxies is 8 - 11% when we correct for background emission-line galaxy contamination (~75% of ELdots).

Symmetry and disorder of the vitreous vortex lattice in an overdoped BaFe_{2-x}Co_xAs_2 superconductor: Indication for strong single-vortex pinning

The disordered flux line lattice in single crystals of the slightly overdoped aFe_{2-x}Co_xAs_2 (x = 0.19, Tc = 23 K) superconductor is studied by magnetization measurements, small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), and magnetic force microscopy (MFM). In the whole range of magnetic fields up to 9 T, vortex pinning precludes the formation of an ordered Abrikosov lattice. Instead, a vitreous vortex phase (vortex glass) with a short-range hexagonal order is observed. Statistical processing of MFM datasets lets us directly measure its radial and angular distribution functions and extract the radial correlation length ζ. In contrast to predictions of the collective pinning model, no increase in the correlated volume with the applied field is observed. Instead, we find that ζdecreases as 1.3*R1 ~ H^(-1/2) over four decades of the applied magnetic field, where R1 is the radius of the first coordination shell of the vortex lattice. Such universal scaling of ζimplies that the vortex pinning in iron arsenides remains strong even in the absence of static magnetism. This result is consistent with all the real- and reciprocal-space vortex-lattice measurements in overdoped as-grown aFe_{2-x}Co_xAs_2 published to date and is thus sample-independent. The failure of the collective pinning model suggests that the vortices remain in the single-vortex pinning limit even in high magnetic fields up to 9 T.

Abelian decomposition of Einstein's theory: Reformulation of general relativity

We propose a reformulation of general relativity by making the Abelian decomposition of Einstein's theory. Based on the view that Einstein's theory can be interpreted as a gauge theory of Lorentz group, we decompose the Einstein's gravitational connection (the gauge potential of Lorentz group $\vGm_μ$) into the restricted connection made of the potential of the maximal Abelian subgroup $H$ of Lorentz group $G$ and the valence connection made of $G/H$ part of the potential which transforms covariantly under Lorentz group. With this decomposition we show that the Einstein's theory can be decomposed into the restricted part made of the restricted connection which has the full Lorentz gauge invariance and the valence part made of the valence connection which plays the role of gravitational source of the restricted gravity. We show that there are two different Abelian decomposition of Einstein's theory, because Lorentz group has two maximal Abelian subgroups. In this decomposition the role of the space-time metric $g_\mn$ is replaced by a four-index metric tensor $\vg_\mn$ which transforms covariantly under the Lorentz group, and the metric-compatibility condition $\nabla_αg_\mn=0$ of the connection is replaced by the gauge covariant condition $D_μ\vg^\mn$ which tells that $\vg_\mn$ is invariant under the parallel transport along the $\pro_μ$-direction defined by $\vGm_μ$. We discuss the physical implications of the Abelian decomposition. In particular, we argue that the decomposition implies the existence of a restricted theory of gravitation which has the full general invariance but has less physical degrees of freedom.

The Rotation Velocity Attributable to Dark Matter at Intermediate Radii in Disk Galaxies

We examine the amplitude of the rotation velocity that can be attributed to the dark matter halos of disk galaxies, focusing on well measured intermediate radii. The data for 60 galaxies spanning a large range of mass and Hubble types, taken together, are consistent with a dark halo velocity log(Vh) = C + B log(r) with C = 1.47 (+0.15, -0.19) and B = 1/2 over the range 1 < r < 74 kpc. The range in C stems from different choices of the stellar mass estimator, from minimum to maximum disk. For all plausible choices of stellar mass, the implied densities of the dark halos are lower than expected from structure formation simulations in LCDM, which anticipate C > 1.6. This problem is not specific to a particular type of galaxy or to the innermost region of the halo (cusp or core); the velocity attributable to dark matter is too low at all radii.

Exclusive Measurement of the Nonmesonic Weak Decay of ^{5}_ΛHe Hypernucleus

We performed a coincidence measurement of two nucleons emitted from the nonmesonic weak decay (NMWD) of ^{5}_ΛHe formed via the ^{6}Li(π^+,K^+) reaction. The energies of two nucleons and the pair number distributions in the opening angle between them were measured. In both np and nn pairs, we observed a clean back-to-back correlation coming from the two-body decay of Λp --> n p and Λn --> n n, respectively. The ratio of the nucleon pair numbers was N_{nn}/N_{np}=0.45 \pm 0.11(stat)\pm 0.03(syst) in the kinematic region of cos(theta_{NN}) < -0.8. Since each decay mode was exclusively detected, the measured ratio should be close to the ratio of Γ(Λp --> np)/Γ(Λn --> nn). The ratio is consistent with recent theoretical calculations based on the heavy meson/direct quark exchange picture.

Interplane Transport and Superfluid Density in Layered Superconductors

We report on generic trends in the behavior of the interlayer penetration depth $λ_c$ of several different classes of quasi two-dimensional superconductors including cuprates, Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, transition metal dichalcogenides and organic materials of the $(BEDT-TTF)_2X$-series. Analysis of these trends reveals two distinct patterns in the scaling between the values of $λ_c$ and the magnitude of the DC conductivity: one realized in the systems with a Fermi liquid (FL) ground state and the other seen in systems with a marked deviation from the FL response. The latter pattern is found primarily in under-doped cuprates and indicates a dramatic enhancement (factor $\simeq 10^2$) of the energy scale $Ω_C$ associated with the formation of the condensate compared to the data for the FL materials. We discuss implications of these results for the understanding of pairing in high-$T_c$ cuprates.

Measurements of the longitudinal structure function and |V_cs| in the CCFR experiment

Measurements of charged current neutrino and anti-neutrino nucleon interactions in the CCFR detector are used to extract the structure functions, F_2, xF_3(nu), xF_3(nubar) and R(longitudinal) in the kinematic region 0.01<x<0.6 and 1<Q^2<300 GeV^2. The new measurements of R in the x<0.1 region provide a constraint on the level of the gluon distribution. The x and Q^2 dependence of R is compared with a QCD based fit to previous data. The CKM matrix element |V_cs| is extracted from a combined analysis of xF_3 and dimuon data.
