A basic homogenization problem for the $p$-Laplacian in ${\mathbb R}^d$ perforated along a sphere: $L^\infty$ estimates

We consider a boundary value problem for the $p$-Laplacian, posed in the exterior of small cavities that all have the same $p$-capacity and are anchored to the unit sphere in $\mathbb{R}^d$, where $1<p<d.$ We assume that the distance between anchoring points is at least $\varepsilon$ and the characteristic diameter of cavities is $α\varepsilon$, where $α=α(\varepsilon)$ tends to 0 with $\varepsilon$. We also assume that anchoring points are asymptotically uniformly distributed as $\varepsilon \downarrow 0$, and their number is asymptotic to a positive constant times $\varepsilon^{1-d}$. The solution $u=u^\varepsilon$ is required to be 1 on all cavities and decay to 0 at infinity. Our goal is to describe the behavior of solutions for small $\varepsilon>0$. We show that the problem possesses a critical window characterized by $τ:=\lim_{\varepsilon \downarrow 0}α/α_c \in (0,\infty)$, where $α_c=\varepsilon^{1/γ}$ and $γ= \frac{d-p}{p-1}.$ We prove that outside the unit sphere, as $\varepsilon\downarrow 0$, the solution converges to $A_*U$ for some constant $A_*$, where $U(x)=\min\{1,|x|^{-γ}\}$ is the radial $p$-harmonic function outside the unit ball. Here the constant $A_*$ equals 0 if $τ=0$, while $A_*=1$ if $τ=\infty$. In the critical window where $τ$ is positive and finite, $ A_*\in(0,1)$ is explicitly computed in terms of the parameters of the problem. We also evaluate the limiting $p$-capacity in all three cases mentioned above. Our key new tool is the construction of an explicit ansatz function $u_{A_*}^\varepsilon$ that approximates the solution $u^\varepsilon$ in $L^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ and satisfies $\|\nabla u^\varepsilon-\nabla u_{A_*}^\varepsilon \|_{L^{p}(\mathbb{R}^d)} \to 0$ as $\varepsilon \downarrow 0$.

Instantaneous smoothing and exponential decay of solutions for a degenerate evolution equation with application to Boltzmann's equation

We establish an instantaneous smoothing property for decaying solutions on the half-line $(0,+\infty)$ of certain degenerate Hilbert space-valued evolution equations arising in kinetic theory, including in particular the steady Boltzmann equation. Our results answer the two main open problems posed by Pogan and Zumbrun in their treatment of $H^1$ stable manifolds of such equations, showing that $L^2_{loc}$ solutions that remain sufficiently small in $L^\infty$ (i) decay exponentially, and (ii) are $C^\infty$ for $t>0$, hence lie eventually in the $H^1$ stable manifold constructed by Pogan and Zumbrun

On a Bellman function associated with the Chang--Wilson--Wolff theorem: a case study

In this paper we estimate the tail of distribution (i.e., the measure of the set $\{f\ge x\}$) for those functions $f$ whose dyadic square function is bounded by a given constant. In particular we get a bit better estimate than the estimate following from the Chang--Wilson--Wolf theorem. In the paper we investigate the Bellman function corresponding to the problem. A curious structure of this function is found: it has jumps of the first derivative at a dense subset of interval $[0,1]$ (where it is calculated exactly), but it is of $C^\infty$-class for $x>\sqrt3$ (where it is calculated up to a multiplicative constant). An unusual feature of the paper consists in the usage of computer calculations in the proof. Nevertheless, all the proofs are quite rigorous, since only the integer arithmetic was assigned to computer.

Chemotaxis and Reactions in Biology

Chemotaxis plays a crucial role in a variety of processes in biology and ecology. Quite often it acts to improve efficiency of biological reactions. One example is the immune system signalling, where infected tissues release chemokines attracting monocytes to fight invading bacteria. Another example is reproduction, where eggs release pheromones that attract sperm. A macro scale example is flower scent appealing to pollinators. In this paper we consider a system of PDE designed to model such processes. Our interest is to quantify the effect of chemotaxis on reaction rates compared to pure reaction-diffusion. We limit consideration to surface chemotaxis, which is well motivated from the point of view of many applications. Our results provide the first insight into situations where chemotaxis can be crucial for reaction success, and where its effect is likely to be limited. The proofs are based on new analytical tools; a significant part of the paper is dedicated to building up the linear machinery that can be useful in more general settings. In particular we establish precise estimates on the rates of convergence to ground state for a class of Fokker-Planck operators with potentials that grow at a logarithmic rate at infinity. These estimates are made possible by a new sharp weak weighted Poincaré inequality improving in particular a result of Bobkov and Ledoux.

The local Tb theorem with rough test functions

We prove a local $Tb$ theorem under close to minimal (up to certain `buffering') integrability assumptions, conjectured by S. Hofmann (El Escorial, 2008): Every cube is assumed to support two non-degenerate functions $b^1_Q\in L^p$ and $b^2_Q\in L^q$ such that $1_{2Q}Tb^1_Q\in L^{q'}$ and $1_{2Q}T^*b^2_Q\in L^{p'}$, with appropriate uniformity and scaling of the norms. This is sufficient for the $L^2$-boundedness of the Calderon-Zygmund operator $T$, for any $p,q\in(1,\infty)$, a result previously unknown for simultaneously small values of $p$ and $q$. We obtain this as a corollary of a local $Tb$ theorem for the maximal truncations $T_{\#}$ and $(T^*)_{\#}$: for the $L^2$-boundedness of $T$, it suffices that $1_Q T_{\#}b^1_Q$ and $1_Q (T^*)_{\#}b^2_Q$ be uniformly in $L^0$. The proof builds on the technique of suppressed operators from the quantitative Vitushkin conjecture due to Nazarov-Treil-Volberg.

Gelfand-type problem for turbulent jets

We consider the model of auto-ignition (thermal explosion) of a free round reactive turbulent jet. This model falls into the general class of Gelfand-type problems and constitutes a boundary value problem for a certain semi-linear elliptic equation that depends on two parameters: $α$ characterizing the flow rate and $λ$ (Frank-Kamentskii parameter) characterizing the strength of the reaction. Similarly to the classical Gelfand problem, this equation admits a solution when the Frank-Kametskii parameter $λ$ does not exceed some critical value $λ^*(α)$ and admits no solutions for larger values of $λ$. We obtain the sharp asymptotic behavior of the critical Frank-Kamenetskii parameter in the strong flow limit ($α\gg1$). We also provide a detailed description of the extremal solution (i.e., the solution corresponding to $λ^*$) in this regime.

How many matrices can be spectrally balanced simultaneously?

We prove that any $\ell$ positive definite $d \times d$ matrices, $M_1,\ldots,M_\ell$, of full rank, can be simultaneously spectrally balanced in the following sense: for any $k < d$ such that $\ell \leq \lfloor \frac{d-1}{k-1} \rfloor$, there exists a matrix $A$ satisfying $\frac{λ_1(A^T M_i A) }{ \mathrm{Tr}( A^T M_i A ) } < \frac{1}{k}$ for all $i$, where $λ_1(M)$ denotes the largest eigenvalue of a matrix $M$. This answers a question posed by Peres, Popov and Sousi and completes the picture described in that paper regarding sufficient conditions for transience of self-interacting random walks. Furthermore, in some cases we give quantitative bounds on the transience of such walks.

Lower bounds for uncentered maximal functions in any dimension

In this paper we address the following question: given $ p\in (1,\infty)$, $n \geq 1$, does there exists a constant $A(p,n)>1$ such that $\| M f\|_{L^{p}}\geq A(n,p) \| f\|_{L^{p}}$ for any nonnegative $f \in L^{p}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$, where $Mf$ is a maximal function operator defined over the family of shifts and dilates of a centrally symmetric convex body. The inequality fails in general for the centered maximal function operator, but nevertheless we give an affirmative answer to the question for the uncentered maximal function operator and the almost centered maximal function operator. In addition, we also present the Bellman function approach of Melas, Nikolidakis and Stavropoulos to maximal function operators defined over various types of families of sets, and in case of parallelepipeds we will show that $A(n,p)=\left(\frac{p}{p-1}\right)^{1/p}$.

The measures with an associated square function operator bounded in $L^2$

In this paper we provide an extension of a theorem of David and Semmes ('91) to general non-atomic measures. The result provides a geometric characterization of the non-atomic measures for which a certain class of square function operators, or singular integral operators, are bounded in $L^2(μ)$. The description is given in terms of a modification of Jones' $β$-coefficients.

The Riesz transform of codimension smaller than one and the Wolff energy

Fix $d\geq 2$, and $s\in (d-1,d)$. We characterize the non-negative locally finite non-atomic Borel measures $μ$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$ for which the associated $s$-Riesz transform is bounded in $L^2(μ)$ in terms of the Wolff energy. This extends the range of $s$ in which the Mateu-Prat-Verdera characterization of measures with bounded $s$-Riesz transform is known. As an application, we give a metric characterization of the removable sets for locally Lipschitz continuous solutions of the fractional Laplacian operator $(-Δ)^{α/2}$, $α\in (1,2)$, in terms of a well-known capacity from non-linear potential theory. This result contrasts sharply with removability results for Lipschitz harmonic functions.

Trace reconstruction with $\exp( O( n^{1/3} ) )$ samples

In the trace reconstruction problem, an unknown bit string $x \in \{0,1\}^n$ is observed through the deletion channel, which deletes each bit of $x$ with some constant probability $q$, yielding a contracted string $\widetilde{x}$. How many independent copies of $\widetilde{x}$ are needed to reconstruct $x$ with high probability? Prior to this work, the best upper bound, due to Holenstein, Mitzenmacher, Panigrahy, and Wieder (2008), was $\exp(\widetilde{O}(n^{1/2}))$. We improve this bound to $\exp(O(n^{1/3}))$ using statistics of individual bits in the output and show that this bound is sharp in the restricted model where this is the only information used. Our method, that uses elementary complex analysis, can also handle insertions.

Asymptotic laws for the spatial distribution and the number of connected components of zero sets of Gaussian random functions

We study the asymptotic laws for the spatial distribution and the number of connected components of zero sets of smooth Gaussian random functions of several real variables. The primary examples are various Gaussian ensembles of real-valued polynomials (algebraic or trigonometric) of large degree on the sphere or torus, and translation-invariant smooth Gaussian functions on the Euclidean space restricted to large domains.

Distribution of zeroes of Rademacher Taylor series

We find the asymptotics of the counting function of zeroes of random entire functions represented by Rademacher Taylor series. We also give the asymptotics of the weighted counting function, which takes into account the arguments of zeroes. These results answer several questions left open after the pioneering work of Littlewood and Offord of 1948. The proofs are based on our recent result on the logarithmic integrability of Rademacher Fourier series.

Reflectionless measures for Calderón-Zygmund operators II: Wolff potentials and rectifiability

We continue our study of the reflectionless measures associated to an $s$-dimensional Calderón-Zygmund operator (CZO) acting in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with $s\in (0,d)$. Here, our focus will be the study of CZOs that are rigid, in the sense that they have few reflectionless measures associated to them. Our goal is to prove that the rigidity properties of a CZO $T$ impose strong geometric conditions upon the support of any measure $μ$ for which $T$ is a bounded operator in $L^2(μ)$. In this way, we shall reduce certain well-known problems at the interface of harmonic analysis and geometric measure theory to a description of reflectionless measures of singular integral operators. What's more, we show that this approach yields promising new results.

Triple operator integrals in Schatten--von Neumann norms and functions of perturbed noncommuting operators

We study perturbations of functions $f(A,B)$ of noncommuting self-adjoint operators $A$ and $B$ that can be defined in terms of double operator integrals. We prove that if $f$ belongs to the Besov class $B_{\be,1}^1(\R^2)$, then we have the following Lipschitz type estimate in the Schatten--von Neumann norm $\bS_p$, $1\le p\le2$ norm: $\|f(A_1,B_1)-f(A_2,B_2)\|_{\bS_p}\le\const(\|A_1-A_2\|_{\bS_p}+\|B_1-B_2\|_{\bS_p})$. However, the condition $f\in B_{\be,1}^1(\R^2)$ does not imply the Lipschitz type estimate in $\bS_p$ with $p>2$. The main tool is Schatten--von Neumann norm estimates for triple operator integrals.

Bellman approach to the one-sided bumping for weighted estimates of Calderón--Zygmund operators

We give again (see also arXiv:1112.0676) a proof of weighted estimate of any Calderón-Zygmund operator. This is under a universal sharp sufficient condition that is weaker than the so-called bump condition. Bump conjecture was recently solved independently and simultaneously by A. Lerner (arXiv:1202.1860) and Nazarov--Reznikov-Treil-Volberg (arXiv:1202.2406). The latter paper uses the Bellman approach. Immediately a very natural and seemingly simple question arises how to strengthen the bump conjecture result by weakening its assumptions in a natural symmetric way. This is what we are dealing with here. However we meet an unexpected and, in our opinion, deep obstacle, that allows us to achieve only a partial result. The result of the present article is slightly stronger than the one in arXiv:1112.0676. Our proof consists of two main parts: reduction to a simple model operator, construction of Bellman function for estimating this simple operator. The newer feature is that the domain of definition of our Bellman function is infinitely dimensional.

However, the condition $f\in B_{\be,1}^1(\R^2)$ does not imply the Lipschitz type estimate in the operator norm.

Global estimates for kernels of Neumann series and Green's functions

We obtain global pointwise estimates for kernels of the resolvents $(I-T)^{-1}$ of integral operators \[Tf(x) = \int_Ω K(x, y) f(y) d ω(y)\] on $L^2(Ω, ω)$ under the assumptions that $||T||_{L^2(ω) \rightarrow L^2 (ω)} <1$ and $d(x,y)=1/K(x,y)$ is a quasi-metric. Let $K_1=K$ and $K_j(x,y) = \int_Ω K_{j-1} (x,z) K(z,y) \, d ω(z)$ for $j \geq 1$. Then $$ K(x,y) e^{c K_2 (x,y)/K(x,y)} \leq \sum_{j=1}^{\infty} K_j(x,y) \leq K(x,y) e^{C K_2 (x,y)/K(x,y)}, $$ for some constants $c,C>0$. Our estimates yield matching bilateral bounds for Green's functions of the fractional Schrödinger operators $(-\triangle)^{α/2}-q$ with arbitrary nonnegative potentials $q$ on $\mathbb{R}^n$ for $0<α<n$, or on a bounded non-tangentially accessible domain $Ω$ for $0<α\le 2$. In probabilistic language, these results can be reformulated as explicit bilateral bounds for the conditional gauge associated with Brownian motion or $α$-stable Lévy processes.

Reflectionless measures for Calderón-Zygmund Operators I: Basic Theory

We study the properties of reflectionless measures for an $s$-dimensional Calderón-Zygmund operator $T$ acting in $\mathbb{R}^d$, where $s\in (0,d)$. Roughly speaking, these are the measures $μ$ for which $T(μ)$ is constant on the support of the measure. In this series of papers, we develop the basic theory of reflectionless measures, and describe the relationship between the description of reflectionless measures and certain well-known problems in harmonic analysis and geometric measure theory.

Reflectionless measures for Calderón-Zygmund operators

We study the properties of reflectionless measures for a Calderón-Zygmund operator T. Roughly speaking, these are measures $μ$ for which T(μ) vanishes (in a weak sense) on the support of the measure. We describe the relationship between certain well-known problems in harmonic analysis and geometric measure theory and the classification of reflectionless measures. As an application of our theory, we give a new proof of a recent theorem of Eiderman, Nazarov, and Volberg, which states that in $\mathbb{R}^d$, the s-dimensional Riesz transform of a non-trivial $s$-dimensional measure is unbounded if $s\in (d-1,d)$.

The proof of $A_2$ conjecture in a geometrically doubling metric space

We give a proof of the $A_2$ conjecture in geometrically doubling metric spaces (GDMS), i.e. a metric space where one can fit not more than a fixed amount of disjoint balls of radius $r$ in a ball of radius $2r$. Our proof consists of three main parts: a construction of a random "dyadic" lattice in a metric space; a clever averaging trick from [3], which decomposes a "hard" part of a Calderon-Zygmund operator into dyadic shifts (adjusted to metric setting); and the estimates for these dyadic shifts, made in [16] and later in [19].

The Riesz transform, rectifiability, and removability for Lipschitz harmonic functions

We show that, given a set $E\subset \mathbb R^{n+1}$ with finite $n$-Hausdorff measure $H^n$, if the $n$-dimensional Riesz transform $$R_{H^n|E} f(x) = \int_{E} \frac{x-y}{|x-y|^{n+1}} f(y) dH^n(y)$$ is bounded in $L^2(H^n|E)$, then $E$ is $n$-rectifiable. From this result we deduce that a compact set $E\subset\mathbb R^{n+1}$ with $H^n(E)<\infty$ is removable for Lipschitz harmonic functions if and only if it is purely $n$-unrectifiable, thus proving the analog of Vitushkin's conjecture in higher dimensions.

Carleson--Buckley measures beyond the scope of $A_\infty$ and their applications

Carleson measures are ubiquitous in Harmonic Analysis. In the paper of Fefferman--Kenig--Pipher in 1991 an interesting class of Carleson measures was introduced for the need of regularity problems of elliptic PDE. These Carleson measures were associated with $A_\infty$ weights. In discrete setting (we need exactly discrete setting here) they were studied by Buckley's, where they were associated with dyadic $A\infty^d$. Our goal here is to show that such Carleson--Buckley measures (in discrete setting) exists for virtually any positive function (weight). Of course some modification is needed, because it is known that Carleson property of Buckley's measure are equivalent to the weight to be in $A_\infty^d$. However a very natural generalization of those facts exist for weights more general $A_\infty$, and of course, in a special case of $A_\infty^d$ it gives Buckley's results. Our generalization of Buckley's inequality beyond the scope of $A_\infty$ allows us to prove the so-called bump conjecture.

Functions of perturbed tuples of self-adjoint operators

We generalize earlier results of Peller, Aleksandrov - Peller, Aleksandrov - Peller - Potapov - Sukochev to the case of functions of $n$-tuples of commuting self-adjoint operators. In particular, we prove that if a function $f$ belongs to the Besov space $B_{\be,1}^1(\R^n)$, then $f$ is operator Lipschitz and we show that if $f$ satisfies a Hölder condition of order $\a$, then $\|f(A_1...,A_n)-f(B_1,...,B_n)\|\le\const\max_{1\le j\le n}\|A_j-B_j\|^\a$ for all $n$-tuples of commuting self-adjoint operators $(A_1,...,A_n)$ and $(B_1,...,B_n)$. We also consider the case of arbitrary moduli of continuity and the case when the operators $A_j-B_j$ belong to the Schatten--von Neumann class $\bS_p$.

On the uniform rectifiability of AD regular measures with bounded Riesz transform operator: the case of codimension 1

We prove that if $μ$ is a d-dimensional Ahlfors-David regular measure in $\R^{d+1}$, then the boundedness of the $d$-dimensional Riesz transform in $L^2(μ)$ implies that the non-BAUP David-Semmes cells form a Carleson family. Combined with earlier results of David and Semmes, this yields the uniform rectifiability of $μ$.

The $s$-Riesz transform of an $s$-dimensional measure in $\R^2$ is unbounded for $1<s<2$

In this paper, we prove that for $s\in(1,2)$ there exists no totally lower irregular finite positive Borel measure $μ$ in $\R^2$ with\break $\mathcal H^s(\suppμ)<+\infty$ such that $\|Rμ\|\ci{L^\infty(m_2)}<+\infty$, where $Rμ=μ\ast\frac{x}{|x|^{s+1}}$ and $m_2$ is the Lebesgue measure in $\R^2$. Combined with known results of Prat and Vihtilä, this shows that for any non-integer $s\in(0,2)$ and any finite positive Borel measure in $\R^2$ with $\mathcal H^s(\suppμ)<+\infty$, we have $\|Rμ\|\ci{L^\infty(m_2)}=\infty$.

A simple energy pump for the surface quasi-geostrophic equation

We consider the question of growth of high order Sobolev norms of solutions of the conservative surface quasi-geostrophic equation. We show that if $s>0$ is large then for every given $A$ there is exist small in $H^s$ initial data such that the corresponding solution's $H^s$ norm exceeds $A$ at some time. The idea of the construction is quasilinear. We use a small perturbation of a stable shear flow. The shear flow can be shown to create small scales in the perturbation part of the flow. The control is lost once the nonlinear effects become too large.

A simple sharp weighted estimate of the dyadic shifts on metric spaces with geometric doubling

We give a short and simple polynomial estimate of the norm of weighted dyadic shift on metric space with geometric doubling, which is linear in the norm of the weight. Combined with the existence of special probability space of dyadic lattices built in A. Reznikov, A. Volberg, "Random "dyadic" lattice in geometrically doubling metric space and $A_2$ conjecture", arXiv:1103.5246, and with decomposition of Calderón-Zygmund operators to dyadic shifts from Hytönen's "The sharp weighted bound for general Calderón-Zygmund operators", arXiv:1007.4330 (and later T. Hytönen, C. Pérez, S. Treil, A. Volberg, "A sharp estimated of weighted dyadic shifts that gives the proof of $A_2$ conjecture", arXiv 1010.0755), we will be able to have a linear (in the norm of weight) estimate of an arbitrary Calderón-Zygmund operator on a metric space with geometric doubling. This will be published separately.

Persistence and permanence of mass-action and power-law dynamical systems

Persistence and permanence are properties of dynamical systems that describe the long-term behavior of the solutions, and in particular specify whether positive solutions approach the boundary of the positive orthant. Mass-action systems (or more generally power-law systems) are very common in chemistry, biology, and engineering, and are often used to describe the dynamics in interaction networks. We prove that two-species mass-action systems derived from weakly reversible networks are both persistent and permanent, for any values of the reaction rate parameters. Moreover, we prove that a larger class of networks, called endotactic networks, also give rise to permanent systems, even if we allow the reaction rate parameters to vary in time. These results also apply to power-law systems and other nonlinear dynamical systems. In addition, ideas behind these results allow us to prove the Global Attractor Conjecture for three-species systems.

Correlation functions for random complex zeroes: strong clustering and local universality

We prove strong clustering of k-point correlation functions of zeroes of Gaussian Entire Functions. In the course of the proof, we also obtain universal local bounds for k-point functions of zeroes of arbitrary nondegenerate Gaussian analytic functions. In the second part of the paper, we show that strong clustering yields the asymptotic normality of fluctuations of some linear statistics of zeroes of Gaussian Entire Functions, in particular, of the number of zeroes in measurable domains of large area. This complements our recent results from the paper "Fluctuations in random complex zeroes" (arXiv:1003.4251v1).

Fluctuations in random complex zeroes: Asymptotic normality revisited

By random complex zeroes we mean the zero set of a random entire function whose Taylor coefficients are independent complex-valued Gaussian variables, and the variance of the k-th coefficient is 1/k!. This zero set is distribution invariant with respect to isometries of the complex plane. Extending the previous results of Sodin and Tsirelson, we compute the variance of linear statistics of random complex zeroes, and find close to optimal conditions on a test-function that yield asymptotic normality of fluctuations of the corresponding linear statistics. We also provide examples of test-functions with abnormal fluctuations of linear statistics.

New coins from old, smoothly

Given a (known) function $f:[0,1] \to (0,1)$, we consider the problem of simulating a coin with probability of heads $f(p)$ by tossing a coin with unknown heads probability $p$, as well as a fair coin, $N$ times each, where $N$ may be random. The work of Keane and O'Brien (1994) implies that such a simulation scheme with the probability $¶_p(N<\infty)$ equal to 1 exists iff $f$ is continuous. Nacu and Peres (2005) proved that $f$ is real analytic in an open set $S \subset (0,1)$ iff such a simulation scheme exists with the probability $¶_p(N>n)$ decaying exponentially in $n$ for every $p \in S$. We prove that for $α>0$ non-integer, $f$ is in the space $C^α[0,1]$ if and only if a simulation scheme as above exists with $¶_p(N>n) \le C (Δ_n(p))^α$, where $Δ_n(x)\eqbd \max \{\sqrt{x(1-x)/n},1/n \}$. The key to the proof is a new result in approximation theory: Let $\B_n$ be the cone of univariate polynomials with nonnegative Bernstein coefficients of degree $n$. We show that a function $f:[0,1] \to (0,1)$ is in $C^α[0,1]$ if and only if $f$ has a series representation $\sum_{n=1}^\infty F_n$ with $F_n \in \B_n$ and $\sum_{k>n} F_k(x) \le C(Δ_n(x))^α$ for all $ x \in [0,1]$ and $n \ge 1$. We also provide a counterexample to a theorem stated without proof by Lorentz (1963), who claimed that if some $ϕ_n \in \B_n$ satisfy $|f(x)-ϕ_n(x)| \le C (Δ_n(x))^α$ for all $ x \in [0,1]$ and $n \ge 1$, then $f \in C^α[0,1]$.

Two weight estimate for the Hilbert transform and corona decomposition for non-doubling measures

This article was written in 2005 and subsequently lost (at least by the third author). Recently it resurfaced due to one of the colleagues to whom a hard copy has been sent in 2005. We consider here a problem of finding necessary and sufficient conditions for the boundedness of two weight Calderón-Zygmund operators. We give such necessary and sufficient conditions in very natural terms, if the operator is the Hilbert transform, and the weights satisfy some very natural condition. The condition on weights was lifted in a recent paper of Michael Lacey, Eric Sawyer and Ignacio Uriarte-Tuero: "A characterization of the two weight norm inequality for the Hilbert transform", arXiv:1001.4043 [math.CA] 31 January 2010. The paper of Lacey--Sawyer-Uriarte-Tuero alliviated the "pivotal" condition used in a present article and replaced it by the very interesting and correct energy condition, which, unlike the "pivotal" condition turned out to be also necessary. The paper of Lacey-Sawyer-Uriarte-Tuero used the present article in its main aspect. The thrust of the present article is to use the methods of nonhomogeneous Harmonoc Analysis together with a several paraproducts arising from a certain stopping time argument. In view of the importance of the present article for Lacey--Sawyer-Uriarte-Tuero's paper arXiv:1001.4043 [math.CA] 31 January 2010, we present it to the attention of the reader. Convolutions of Cantor measures without resonance

Denote by $μ_a$ the distribution of the random sum $(1-a) \sum_{j=0}^\infty ω_j a^j$, where $P(ω_j=0)=P(ω_j=1)=1/2$ and all the choices are independent. For $0<a<1/2$, the measure $μ_a$ is supported on $C_a$, the central Cantor set obtained by starting with the closed united interval, removing an open central interval of length $(1-2a)$, and iterating this process inductively on each of the remaining intervals. We investigate the convolutions $μ_a * (μ_b \circ S_λ^{-1})$, where $S_λ(x)=λx$ is a rescaling map. We prove that if the ratio $\log b/\log a$ is irrational and $λ\neq 0$, then \[ D(μ_a *(μ_b\circ S_λ^{-1})) = \min(\dim_H(C_a)+\dim_H(C_b),1), \] where $D$ denotes any of correlation, Hausdorff or packing dimension of a measure. We also show that, perhaps surprisingly, for uncountably many values of $λ$ the convolution $μ_{1/4} *(μ_{1/3}\circ S_λ^{-1})$ is a singular measure, although $\dim_H(C_{1/4})+\dim_H(C_{1/3})>1$ and $\log (1/3) /\log (1/4)$ is irrational.

On the Number of Nodal Domains of Random Spherical Harmonics

Let N(f) be a number of nodal domains of a random Gaussian spherical harmonic f of degree n. We prove that as n grows to infinity, the mean of N(f)/n^2 tends to a positive constant, and that N(f)/n^2 exponentially concentrates around that constant. This result is consistent with predictions made by Bogomolny and Schmit using a percolation-like model for nodal domains of random Gaussian plane waves.

Weak type estimates and Cotlar inequalities for Calderón-Zygmund operators in nonhomogeneous spaces

In the paper we consider Calderón-Zygmund operators in nonhomogeneous spaces. We are going to prove the analogs of classical results for homogeneous spaces. Namely, we prove that a Calderón-Zygmund operator is of weak type if it is bounded in $L^2$. We also prove several versions of Cotlar's inequality for maximal singular operator. One version of Cotlar's inequality (a simpler one) is proved in Euclidean setting, another one in a more abstract setting when Besicovich covering lemma is not available. We obtain also the weak type of maximal singular operator from these inequalities.
