An estimate of Sidon constant for complex polynomials with unimodular coefficients

In this paper we are concerned with the Bohnenblust--Hille type inequalities for certain polynomials of bounded degree but of very large number of variables. As the polynomials will be defined on groups, one can think about the problem as the estimate of Sidon constants. In most cases the sharp constants are unknown. We estimate the universal constant concerning the Sidon type estimates of degree $d$ polynomials of $n$ variables $z_1, \dots, z_n$ with unimodular coefficients. For polynomials that have constant absolute value of coefficients, this allows us to improve the estimate from \cite{DGMS}. The main result is Theorem 1.7 below.

Banach space valued Pisier and Riesz type inequalities on discrete cube

This is an attempt to build Banach space valued theory for certain singular integrals on Hamming cube. Of course all estimates below are dimension independent, and we tried to find ultimate sharp assumptions on the Banach space for a corresponding operators to be bounded. In certain cases we succeeded, although there are still many open questions, some of them are listed in the last Section. Using the approach of \cite{IVHV} and also quantum random variables approach of \cite{ELP} we generalize several theorems of Pisier \cite{P} and Hytönen-Naor \cite{HN}. We also improve the constant in $L^1$-Poincaré inequality on Hamming cube, the previous results are due to Talagrand and Ben Efraim--Lust-Piquard.

On a Bellman function associated with the Chang--Wilson--Wolff theorem: a case study

In this paper we estimate the tail of distribution (i.e., the measure of the set $\{f\ge x\}$) for those functions $f$ whose dyadic square function is bounded by a given constant. In particular we get a bit better estimate than the estimate following from the Chang--Wilson--Wolf theorem. In the paper we investigate the Bellman function corresponding to the problem. A curious structure of this function is found: it has jumps of the first derivative at a dense subset of interval $[0,1]$ (where it is calculated exactly), but it is of $C^\infty$-class for $x>\sqrt3$ (where it is calculated up to a multiplicative constant). An unusual feature of the paper consists in the usage of computer calculations in the proof. Nevertheless, all the proofs are quite rigorous, since only the integer arithmetic was assigned to computer.

One phase problem for two positive harmonic function: below the codimension $1$ threshold

What can be said about the domain $\Om$ in $\bR^n$ for which its Green's function $G(z)$ satisfies $G(z)\asymp \dist (z, \pd\Om)^δ$? What can we say about $\Om$ if the Boundary Harnack Principle holds in the form $u/v=\text{real analytic}$ on the part $E$ of its boundary? Here $u, v$ are positive harmonic functions on $\Om$ vanishing on $E$. Is this part of the boundary also nice? We discuss these questions below and give answers in very special cases.

Pisier type inequalities for $K$-convex spaces

We generalize several theorems of Hytönen-Naor \cite{HN} using the approach from \cite{IVHV}. In particular, we give yet another necessary and sufficient condition (see (3.2)) to be a $K$-convex space, where the sufficiency was proved by Naor--Schechtman \cite{NS}. This condition is in terms of the boundedness of the second order Riesz transforms $\{Δ^{-1} D_i\}_{i=1}^n$ in $L^p(Ω_n, X)$.

Tail spaces estimates on Hamming cube and Bernstein--Markov inequality

This note contains some estimates for tail spaces on Hamming cube. We use analytic paraproduct operator for that purpose. We also show several types of Bernstein--Markov inequalities for Banach space valued functions on Hamming cube. Here the novelty is in getting rid of some irritating logarithms and in proving Bernstein--Markov inequalities for $|\nabla f|_X$ rather than for $Δ^{1/2} f$ for $X$ valued polynomials on Hamming cube.

Dyadic bi-parameter repeated commutator and dyadic product BMO

Consider a tensor product of simple dyadic shifts defined below. We prove here that for dyadic bi-parameter repeated commutator its norm can be estimated from below by Chang-Fefferman $BMO$ norm pertinent to its symbol. See Theorems in Section 8 at the end of this article. But this is done below under an extra assumption on the Haar--Fourier side of the symbol. In Section 7 we carefully analyze what goes wrong in the absence of this extra assumption. At the end of this note we also list a counterexample to the existing proof of characterization of bi-parameter repeated commutator with the Hilbert transforms. This is a counterexample to the proof, and it is not a counterexample to the statement of factorization result in bi-disc, or to Nehari's theorem in bi-disc. To the best of our knowledge Nehari's theorem on bi-disc is still open. Moreover its dyadic bi-parameter version considered in the present paper is also still open for general symbol without any extra restrictions.

Improved surrogate bi-parameter maximum principle

Logarithmic potentials and many other potentials satisfy maximum principle. The dyadic version of logarithmic potential can be easily introduced, it lives on dyadic tree and also satisfies maximum principle. But its analog on bi-tree does not have this property. We prove here that "on average" we can still have something like maximum principle on bi-tree. We use the surrogate maximum principle to prove embedding theorems of Carleson type on bi-disc.

Bi-parameter Carleson embeddings with product weights

Coifman--Meyer multipliers represent a very important class of bi-linear singular operators, which were extensively studied and generalized. They have a natural multi-parameter counterpart. Decomposition of those operators into paraproducts, and, more generally to multi-parameter paraproducts is a staple of the theory. In this paper we consider weighted estimates for bi-parameter paraproducts that appear from such multipliers. Then we apply our harmonic analysis results to several complex variables. Namely, we show that a (weighted) Carleson embedding for a scale of Dirichlet spaces from the bi-torus to the bi-disc is equivalent to a simple ``box'' condition, for product weights on the bi-disc and arbitrary weights on the bi-torus. This gives a new simple necessary and sufficient condition for the embedding of the whole scale of weighted Dirichlet spaces of holomorphic functions on the bi-disc. This scale of Dirichlet spaces includes the classical Dirichlet space on the bi-disc. Our result is in contrast to the classical situation on the bi-disc considered by Chang and Fefferman, when a counterexample due to Carleson shows that the ``box'' condition does not suffice for the embedding to hold. But this was the embedding of bi-harmonic functions in bi-harmonic Hardy class. Our result can be viewed as a new and unexpected combinatorial property of all positive finite planar measures.

Carleson embedding on tri-tree and on tri-disc

We prove multi-parameter dyadic embedding theorem for Hardy operator on the multi-tree. We also show that for a large class of Dirichlet spaces in bi-disc and tri-disc this proves the embedding theorem of those Dirichlet spaces of holomorphic function on bi- and tri-disc. We completely describe the Carleson measures for such embeddings. The result below generalizes embedding result of \cite{AMPVZ} from bi-tree to tri-tree. One of our embedding description is similar to Carleson--Chang--Fefferman condition and involves dyadic open sets. On the other hand, the unusual feature of \cite{AMPVZ} was that embedding on bi-tree turned out to be equivalent to one box Carleson condition. This is in striking difference to works of Chang--Fefferman and well known Carleson quilt counterexample. We prove here the same unexpected result for the tri-tree. Finally, we explain the obstacle that prevents us from proving our results on polydiscs of dimension four and higher.

Dimension of the exceptional set in the Aronszajn-Donoghue theorem for finite rank perturbations

The classical Aronszajn-Donoghue theorem states that for a rank one perturbation of a self-adjoint operator (by a cyclic vector) the singular parts of the spectral measures of the original and perturbed operators are mutually singular. As simple direct sum type examples show, this result does not hold for finite rank perturbations. However, the set of exceptional perturbations is pretty small. Namely, for a family of rank $d$ perturbations $A_{\boldsymbolα} := A +\mathbf{B} \boldsymbolα \mathbf{B}^*$, $\mathbf{B}:\mathbb{C}^d\to \mathbf{H}$, with Ran$\,\mathbf{B}$ being cyclic for $A$, parametrized by $d\times d$ Hermitian matrices $\boldsymbolα$, the singular parts of the spectral measures of $A$ and $A_{\boldsymbolα}$ are mutually singular for all $\boldsymbolα$ except for a small exceptional set $E$. It was shown earlier by the first two authors that $E$ is a subset of measure zero of the space $\mathbf{H}(d)$ of $d\times d$ Hermitian matrices. In this paper we show that the set $E$ has small Hausdorff dimension, $\dim E \le \dim\mathbf{H}(d)-1 = d^2-1$.

Isoperimetric functional inequalities via the maximum principle: the exterior differential systems approach

The goal of this note is to give the unified approach to the solutions of a class of isoperimetric problems by relating them to the exterior differential systems studied by R.~Bryant and P.~Griffiths. In this note we list several classical by now isopereimetric inequalities which can be proved in a unified way. This unified approach reduces them to the so-called exterior differential systems studied by Robert Bryant and Phillip Griffiths. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first article where this connection is used. After reviewing a list of classical inequalities (log-Sobolev inequality, Beckner's inequality, Bobkov's functional isoperimetric inequality and several other inequalities) we use our method to generate new isoperimetric inequalities, in particular, we found the sharpening of Beckner--Sobolev inequalities with Gaussian measure. Key words: log-Sobolev inequality, Poincaré inequality, Bobkov's inequality, Gaussian isoperimetry, semigroups, maximum principle, Monge--Ampère equation with drift, exterior differential systems, backwards heat equation, (B) theorem

On Tsirelson's theorem about triple points for harmonic measure

A theorem of Tsirelson from 1997 asserts that given three disjoint domains in $\mathbb R^{n+1}$, the set of triple points belonging to the intersection of the three boundaries where the three corresponding harmonic measures are mutually absolutely continuous has null harmonic measure. The original proof by Tsirelson is based on the fine analysis of filtrations for Brownian and Walsh-Brownian motions and can not be translated into potential theory arguments. In the present paper we give a purely analytical proof of the same result.

Uniform approximation of Bloch functions and the boundedness of the integration operator on $H^\infty$

We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for the operator of integration to be bounded on $H^\infty$ in a simply connected domain. The main ingredient of the proof is a new result on uniform approximation of Bloch functions. This gives a full characterization of symbols of certain Volterra operators that act on bounded analytic functions in the disc if the symbol is assumed to be univalent. Without this assumption the answer is not known, and as the example at the end of the paper shows, the natural answer is definitely false.

Bellman partial differential equation and the hill property for classical isoperimetric problems

The goal of this note is to have a systematic approach to generating isoperimetric inequalities from two concrete type of PDEs. We call these PDEs Bellman type because a totally analogous equations happen to rule many sharp estimates for singular integrals in harmonic analysis, and such estimates were obtained with the use of Hamilton--Jacobi--Bellman PDE. We show how classical inequalities of Brascamp--Lieb, Prekopa--Leindler, Ehrhard are particular case of this scheme, which allows us to augment the stock of such inequalities. We approach the isoperimetric inequalities as a maximum (minimum) principle for special types of functions. These functions are compositions of "Bellman function" and an appropriate flow built on test functions. Then the existence of maximum (minimum) principle for such compositions can be reduced to the requirement that Bellman function satisfies a concrete class of nonlinear PDE (written down below). We are left to solve this nonlinear PDE (sometimes a possible task) to enjoy isoperimetric inequalities. The nonlinear PDE that we will describe in this article can be reduced sometimes to solving Laplacian eigenvalue problem, $\bar{\partial}$-equation of certain type or just the linear heat equation.

Almost-additivity of analytic capacity and Cauchy independent measures

We show that, given a family of discs centered at a chord-arc curve, the analytic capacity of a union of arbitrary subsets of these discs (one subset in each disc) is comparable with the sum of their analytic capacities. We show a sort of converse to this geometric statement as well. However, we need that the discs in question would be separated, and it is not clear whether the separation condition is essential or not. We apply this result to find families $\{μ_j\}$ of measures in $\mathbb{C}$ with the following property. If the Cauchy integral operators $\mathcal{C}_{μ_j}$ from $L^2(μ_j)$ to itself are bounded uniformly in $j$, then $\mathcal{C}_μ$, $μ=\sumμ_j$, is also bounded from $L^2(μ)$ to itself.

Bellman approach to the one-sided bumping for weighted estimates of Calderón--Zygmund operators

We give again (see also arXiv:1112.0676) a proof of weighted estimate of any Calderón-Zygmund operator. This is under a universal sharp sufficient condition that is weaker than the so-called bump condition. Bump conjecture was recently solved independently and simultaneously by A. Lerner (arXiv:1202.1860) and Nazarov--Reznikov-Treil-Volberg (arXiv:1202.2406). The latter paper uses the Bellman approach. Immediately a very natural and seemingly simple question arises how to strengthen the bump conjecture result by weakening its assumptions in a natural symmetric way. This is what we are dealing with here. However we meet an unexpected and, in our opinion, deep obstacle, that allows us to achieve only a partial result. The result of the present article is slightly stronger than the one in arXiv:1112.0676. Our proof consists of two main parts: reduction to a simple model operator, construction of Bellman function for estimating this simple operator. The newer feature is that the domain of definition of our Bellman function is infinitely dimensional.

Entropy conditions in two weight inequalities for singular integral operators

The new type of "bumping" of the Muckenhoupt $A_2$ condition on weights is introduced. It is based on bumping the entropy integral of the weights. In particular, one gets (assuming mild regularity conditions on the corresponding Young functions) the bump conjecture, proved earlier by A. Lerner and independently by Nazarov--Reznikov--Treil--Volberg, as a corollary of entropy bumping. But our entropy bumps cannot be reduced to the bumping with Orlicz norms in the solution of bump conjecture, they are effectively smaller. Henceforth we get somewhat stronger result than the one that solves the bump conjecture. New results concerning one sided bumping conjecture are obtained. All the results hold in the general non-homogeneous situation.

Mean type of functions of bounded characteristic and Martin functions in Denjoy domains

Functions of bounded characteristic in simply connected domains have a classical factorization to Blaschke, outer and singular inner parts. The latter has a singular measure on the boundary assigned to it. The exponential speed of change of a function when approaching a point of a boundary (mean type) corresponds to a point mass at this point. In this paper we consider the analogous relation for functions in arbitrary infinitely connected (Denjoy) domains. The factorization result holds of course with one important addition: all functions involved become multiple valued even though the initial function was single valued. The mean type now can be measured by using the Martin function of the domain. But this result does not follow from the lifting to the universal covering of the domain because of the simple (but interesting) reason that the mean types of the original and the lifted functions can be completely different.

Extremizers and Bellman function for martingale weak type inequality

We give an exact formula for the Bellman function of the weak type of martingale transform. We also give the extremal functions (actually extremal sequences of functions). We find them using the precise form of the Bellman function. The extremal examples have a fractal nature as it often happens in that kind of problems. This article is devoted to the unweighted weak type estimate.

Logarithmic bump conditions and the two weight boundedness of Calderón-Zygmund operators

We prove that if a pair of weights $(u,v)$ satisfies a sharp $A_p$-bump condition in the scale of log bumps and certain loglog bumps, then Haar shifts map $L^p(v)$ into $L^p(u)$ with a constant quadratic in the complexity of the shift. This in turn implies the two weight boundedness for all Calderón-Zygmund operators. This gives a partial answer to a long-standing conjecture. We also give a partial result for a related conjecture for weak-type inequalities. To prove our main results we combine several different approaches to these problems; in particular we use many of the ideas developed to prove the $A_2$ conjecture. As a byproduct of our work we also disprove a conjecture by Muckenhoupt and Wheeden on weak-type inequalities for the Hilbert transform. This is closely related to the recent counterexamples of Reguera, Scurry and Thiele.

Spectral perturbation theory and the two weights problem

The famous two weights problem consists in characterising all possible pairs of weights such that the Hardy projection is bounded between the corresponding weighted $L^2$ spaces. Koosis' theorem of 1980 gives a way to construct a certain class of pairs of weights. We show that Koosis' theorem is closely related to (in fact, is a direct consequence of) a spectral perturbation model suggested by de Branges in 1962. Further, we show that de Branges' model provides an operator-valued version of Koosis' theorem.

The proof of $A_2$ conjecture in a geometrically doubling metric space

We give a proof of the $A_2$ conjecture in geometrically doubling metric spaces (GDMS), i.e. a metric space where one can fit not more than a fixed amount of disjoint balls of radius $r$ in a ball of radius $2r$. Our proof consists of three main parts: a construction of a random "dyadic" lattice in a metric space; a clever averaging trick from [3], which decomposes a "hard" part of a Calderon-Zygmund operator into dyadic shifts (adjusted to metric setting); and the estimates for these dyadic shifts, made in [16] and later in [19].

The proof of non-homogeneous T1 theorem via averaging of dyadic shifts

We give again a proof of non-homogeneous T1 theorem. Our proof consists of three main parts: a construction of a random dyadic lattice; an estimate of matrix coefficients of a Calderón--Zygmund operator with respect to random Haar basis if a smaller Haar support is good; a clever averaging trick from Hytönen's papers which uses the averaging over dyadic lattices to decompose operator into dyadic shifts eliminating the error term that was present in the previous proofs by Nazarov--Treil--Volberg.

The Riesz transform, rectifiability, and removability for Lipschitz harmonic functions

We show that, given a set $E\subset \mathbb R^{n+1}$ with finite $n$-Hausdorff measure $H^n$, if the $n$-dimensional Riesz transform $$R_{H^n|E} f(x) = \int_{E} \frac{x-y}{|x-y|^{n+1}} f(y) dH^n(y)$$ is bounded in $L^2(H^n|E)$, then $E$ is $n$-rectifiable. From this result we deduce that a compact set $E\subset\mathbb R^{n+1}$ with $H^n(E)<\infty$ is removable for Lipschitz harmonic functions if and only if it is purely $n$-unrectifiable, thus proving the analog of Vitushkin's conjecture in higher dimensions.

Buffon's needle estimates for rational product Cantor sets

Let $S_\infty=A_\infty\times B_\infty$ be a self-similar product Cantor set in the complex plane, defined via $S_\infty=\bigcup_{j=1}^L T_j(S_\infty)$, where $T_j:\C\to\C$ have the form $T_j(z)=\frac1{L}z+z_j$ and $\{z_1,...,z_L\}=A+iB$ for some $A,B\subset\rr$ with $|A|,|B|>1$ and $|A||B|=L$. Let $S_N$ be the $L^{-N}$-neighbourhood of $S_\infty$, or equivalently (up to constants), its $N$-th Cantor iteration. We are interested in the asymptotic behaviour as $N\to\infty$ of the {\it Favard length} of $S_N$, defined as the average (with respect to direction) length of its 1-dimensional projections. If the sets $A$ and $B$ are rational and have cardinalities at most 6, then the Favard length of $S_N$ is bounded from above by $CN^{-p/\log\log N}$ for some $p>0$. The same result holds with no restrictions on the size of $A$ and $B$ under certain implicit conditions concerning the generating functions of these sets. This generalizes the earlier results of Nazarov-Perez-Volberg, Łaba-Zhai, and Bond-Volberg.

Carleson--Buckley measures beyond the scope of $A_\infty$ and their applications

Carleson measures are ubiquitous in Harmonic Analysis. In the paper of Fefferman--Kenig--Pipher in 1991 an interesting class of Carleson measures was introduced for the need of regularity problems of elliptic PDE. These Carleson measures were associated with $A_\infty$ weights. In discrete setting (we need exactly discrete setting here) they were studied by Buckley's, where they were associated with dyadic $A\infty^d$. Our goal here is to show that such Carleson--Buckley measures (in discrete setting) exists for virtually any positive function (weight). Of course some modification is needed, because it is known that Carleson property of Buckley's measure are equivalent to the weight to be in $A_\infty^d$. However a very natural generalization of those facts exist for weights more general $A_\infty$, and of course, in a special case of $A_\infty^d$ it gives Buckley's results. Our generalization of Buckley's inequality beyond the scope of $A_\infty$ allows us to prove the so-called bump conjecture.

On the uniform rectifiability of AD regular measures with bounded Riesz transform operator: the case of codimension 1

We prove that if $μ$ is a d-dimensional Ahlfors-David regular measure in $\R^{d+1}$, then the boundedness of the $d$-dimensional Riesz transform in $L^2(μ)$ implies that the non-BAUP David-Semmes cells form a Carleson family. Combined with earlier results of David and Semmes, this yields the uniform rectifiability of $μ$.

Some remarks on extrapolation with "flat" weights

We prove an extrapolation result for general operators under some weak assumptions on the boundedness of the operator. In particular, we show that if the operator is weakly bounded on some L^{p_{0}}(w), for all "flat" weights, w in A_{p_{0}}, 1 < p_{0} <\infty, then for p in some small neighborhood around p_{0}, and all "flat" A_{p} weights, w, the operator is weakly bounded on L^{p}(w), and as a result we get strong type estimates for the operator.

The $s$-Riesz transform of an $s$-dimensional measure in $\R^2$ is unbounded for $1<s<2$

In this paper, we prove that for $s\in(1,2)$ there exists no totally lower irregular finite positive Borel measure $μ$ in $\R^2$ with\break $\mathcal H^s(\suppμ)<+\infty$ such that $\|Rμ\|\ci{L^\infty(m_2)}<+\infty$, where $Rμ=μ\ast\frac{x}{|x|^{s+1}}$ and $m_2$ is the Lebesgue measure in $\R^2$. Combined with known results of Prat and Vihtilä, this shows that for any non-integer $s\in(0,2)$ and any finite positive Borel measure in $\R^2$ with $\mathcal H^s(\suppμ)<+\infty$, we have $\|Rμ\|\ci{L^\infty(m_2)}=\infty$.

A simple sharp weighted estimate of the dyadic shifts on metric spaces with geometric doubling

We give a short and simple polynomial estimate of the norm of weighted dyadic shift on metric space with geometric doubling, which is linear in the norm of the weight. Combined with the existence of special probability space of dyadic lattices built in A. Reznikov, A. Volberg, "Random "dyadic" lattice in geometrically doubling metric space and $A_2$ conjecture", arXiv:1103.5246, and with decomposition of Calderón-Zygmund operators to dyadic shifts from Hytönen's "The sharp weighted bound for general Calderón-Zygmund operators", arXiv:1007.4330 (and later T. Hytönen, C. Pérez, S. Treil, A. Volberg, "A sharp estimated of weighted dyadic shifts that gives the proof of $A_2$ conjecture", arXiv 1010.0755), we will be able to have a linear (in the norm of weight) estimate of an arbitrary Calderón-Zygmund operator on a metric space with geometric doubling. This will be published separately.

Analytical model for laser-assisted recombination of hydrogenic atoms

We introduce a new method that allows one to obtain an analytical cross section for the laser-assisted electron-ion collision in a closed form. As an example we perform a calculation for the hydrogen laser-assisted recombination. The $S$-matrix element for the process is constructed from an exact electron Coulomb-Volkov wave function and an approximate laser modified hydrogen state. An explicit expression for the field-enhancement coefficient of the process is expressed in terms of the dimensionless parameter $κ= |{eε_{0}}/{qω_{0}}|^{2}$, where $e$ and $q$ are the electron charge and momentum respectively, and $ε_{0}$ and $ω_{0}$ are the amplitude and frequency of the laser field respectively. The simplified version of the cross section of the process is derived and analyzed within a soft photon approximation.

Bellman function technique in Harmonic Analysis. Lectures of INRIA Summer School in Antibes, June 2011

It is strange but fruitful to think about the functions as random processes. Any function can be viewed as a martingale (in many different ways) with discrete time. But it can be useful to have continuous time too. Processes can emulate functions, expectation of profit functional on the solution of stochastic differential equation can emulate the functional on usual familiar functions. The advantage is that now we have "all" admissible functions "enumerated" as solutions of one stochastic differential equation, and choosing the best function optimizing a given functional becomes a problem of choosing the right control process. But such problem has been long since solved in the part of mathematics called Stochastic Optimal Control. So-called Bellman equation reduces an infinite dimensional problem of choosing the best control to a finite dimensional (but non-linear as a rule) PDE called Bellman equation. Its solution, called Bellman function of a given optimization problem, gives us a lot of information about optimum and optimizers. This method gave some interesting results in the classical Harmonic Analysis, having on the surface nothing to do with probability. Sometimes the results obtained by this method did not find "classical" proofs so far. It is especially well-suited to estimates of singular integrals, probably because of the underlying probabilistic structure of classical singular integrals.

Buffon's needle landing near Besicovitch irregular self-similar sets

In this paper we get an estimate of Favard length of an arbitrary neighbourhood of an arbitrary self-similar Cantor set. Consider $L$ closed disjoint discs of radius $1/L$ inside the unit disc. By using linear maps of smaller disc onto the unit disc we can generate a self-similar Cantor set $G$. Then $\G=\bigcap_n\G_n$. One may then ask the rate at which the Favard length - the average over all directions of the length of the orthogonal projection onto a line in that direction - of these sets $\G_n$ decays to zero as a function of $n$. The quantitative results for the Favard length problem were obtained by Peres-Solomyak and Tao; in the latter paper a general way of making a quantitative statement from the Besicovitch theorem is considered. But being rather general, this method does not give a good estimate for self-similar structures such as $\G_n$. Indeed, vastly improved estimates have been proven in these cases: in the paper of Nazarov-Peres-Volberg, it was shown that for 1/4 corner Cantor set one has $p<1/6$, such that $Fav(\K_n)\leq\frac{c_p}{n^{p}}$, and in Laba-Zhai and Bond-Volberg the same type power estimate was proved for the product Cantor sets (with an extra tiling property) and for the Sierpinski gasket $S_n$ for some other $p>0$. In the present work we give an estimate that works for {\it any} Besicovitch set which is self-similar. However estimate is worse than the power one. The power estimate still appears to be related to a certain regularity property of zeros of a corresponding linear combination of exponents (we call this property {\it analytic tiling}).

Laminates Meet Burkholder Functions

We will explain how to compute the exact $L^p$ operator norm of a "quadratic perturbation" of the real part of the Ahlfors--Beurling operator. For the lower bound estimate we use a new approach of constructing a sequence of laminates (probability measures for which Jensen's inequality holds, but for rank one concave functions) to give an almost extremal sequence to approximate the operator. The upper bound estimate is given by extending the estimates of the quadratic perturbation of the martingale transform to continuous martingales. The use of "heat martingales" then allow us to connect the Riesz transforms to the continuous martingale estimate.

On Burkholder function for orthogonal martingales and zeros of Legendre polynomials

Burkholder obtained a sharp estimate of $\E|W|^p$ via $\E|Z|^p$, where $W$ is a martingale transform of $Z$, or, in other words, for martingales $W$ differentially subordinated to martingales $Z$. His result is that $\E|W|^p\le (p^*-1)^p\E|Z|^p$, where $p^* =\max (p, \frac{p}{p-1})$. What happens if the martingales have an extra property of being orthogonal martingales? This property is an analog (for martingales) of the Cauchy-Riemann equation for functions, and it naturally appears from a problem on singular integrals (see the references at the end of Section~1). We establish here that in this case the constant is quite different. Actually, $\E|W|^p\le (\frac{1+z_p}{1-z_p})^p\E|Z|^p$, $p\ge 2$, where $z_p$ is a specific zero of a certain solution of a Legendre ODE. We also prove the sharpness of this estimate. Asymptotically, $(1+z_p)/(1-z_p)=(4j^{-2}_0+o(1))p$, $p\to\infty$, where $j_0$ is the first positive zero of the Bessel function of zero order. This connection with zeros of special functions (and orthogonal polynomials for $p=n(n+1)$) is rather unexpected.

Perturbation of Burkholder's martingale transform and Monge--Ampère equation

Let $\{d_k\}_{k \geq 0}$ be a complex martingale difference in $L^p[0,1],$ where $1<p<\infty,$ and $\{\e_k\}_{k \geq 0}$ a sequence in $\{\pm 1\}.$ We obtain the following generalization of Burkholder's famous result. If $τ\in [-\frac 12, \frac 12]$ and $n \in \Z_+$ then $$|\sum_{k=0}^n{(\{c} \e_k τ) d_k}|_{L^p([0,1], \C^2)} \leq ((p^*-1)^2 + τ^2)^{\frac 12}|\sum_{k=0}^n{d_k}|_{L^p([0,1], \C)},$$ where $((p^*-1)^2 + τ^2)^{\frac 12}$ is sharp and $p^*-1 = \max\{p-1, \frac 1{p-1}\}.$ For $2\leq p<\infty$ the result is also true with sharp constant for $τ\in \R.$

Sharp Lower bound estimates for vector-valued and matrix-valued multipliers in $L^p$

We generalize the idea of a multiplier in two different ways and generalize a recent result of Geiss, Montomery-Smith and Saksman. First of all, we consider multipliers in the form of a vector acting on a scalar function. Using this technique we compute the sharp lower bound estimate for $L^p$ operator norm of a quadratic perturbation of the real part of the Ahlfors-Beurling operator. Secondly, we consider matrix-valued multipliers to obtain a new proof showing that the $L^p$ operator norm of the Ahlfors-Beurling operator is bounded below by p^*-1.

The $L^p-$Operator Norm of a Quadratic Perturbation of the Real Part of the Ahlfors--Beurling Operator

$L^2$-norm and estimates from below for Riesz transforms on Cantor sets

The aim of this paper is to estimate the $L^2$-norms of vector-valued Riesz transforms $R_ν^s$ and the norms of Riesz operators on Cantor sets in $\R^d$, as well as to study the distribution of values of $R_ν^s$. Namely, we show that this distribution is "uniform" in the following sense. The values of $|R_ν^s|^2$ which are comparable with its average value are attended on a "big" portion of a Cantor set. We apply these results to give examples demonstrating the sharpness of our previous estimates for the set of points where Riesz transform is large, and for the corresponding Riesz capacities. The Cantor sets under consideration are different from the usual corner Cantor sets. They are constructed by means a certain process of regularization introduced in the paper.

Bergman-type Singular Operators and the Characterization of Carleson Measures for Besov--Sobolev Spaces on the Complex Ball

The purposes of this paper are two fold. First, we extend the method of non-homogeneous harmonic analysis of Nazarov, Treil and Volberg to handle "Bergman--type" singular integral operators. The canonical example of such an operator is the Beurling transform on the unit disc. Second, we use the methods developed in this paper to settle the important open question about characterizing the Carleson measures for the Besov--Sobolev space of analytic functions $B^σ_2$ on the complex ball of $\mathbb{C}^d$. In particular, we demonstrate that for any $σ> 0$, the Carleson measures for the space are characterized by a "T1 Condition". The method of proof of these results is an extension and another application of the work originated by Nazarov, Treil and the first author.

On $A_2$ conjecture and corona decomposition of weights

We consider here a problem of finding the sharp estimate for the boundedness of an arbitrary Calderón-Zygmund operator in $L^2(w)$, $w\in A_2$. We first prove that for $A_2$ weight $w$ one has that the norm a Calderon--Zygmund operator $T$ in $L^2(w)$ is bounded by the sum of its weak norm, the weak norm of its adjoint, and the $A_2$ norm of the weight. From this result we derive that $\|T\|_{L^2(w)\rightarrow L^2(w)} \le C\,[w]_{A_2}\log (1+[w]_{A_2})$. We believe that the logarithmic factor is superflous. The approach is based on $2$-weight estimates technique and, hence, on non-homogeneous harmonic analysis.

Sharp weighted estimates for dyadic shifts and the $A_2$ conjecture

We give a self-contained proof of the $A_2$ conjecture, which claims that the norm of any Calderon-Zygmund operator is bounded by the first degree of the $A_2$ norm of the weight. The original proof of this result by the first author relied on a subtle and rather difficult reduction to a testing condition by the last three authors. Here we replace this reduction by a new weighted norm bound for dyadic shifts - linear in the $A_2$ norm of the weight and quadratic in the complexity of the shift -, which is based on a new quantitative two-weight inequality for the shifts. These sharp one- and two-weight bounds for dyadic shifts are the main new results of this paper. They are obtained by rethinking the corresponding previous results of Lacey-Petermichl-Reguera and Nazarov-Treil-Volberg. To complete the proof of the $A_2$ conjecture, we also provide a simple variant of the representation, already in the original proof, of an arbitrary Calderon-Zygmund operator as an average of random dyadic shifts and random dyadic paraproducts. This method of the representation amounts to the refinement of the techniques from nonhomogeneous Harmonic Analysis.

Some new Bellman functions and subordination by orthogonal martingales in $L^{p}, 1<p\le 2$

Given two martingales on the filtration generated by two dimensional Brownian motion, we want to estimate the $L^p$ norm of the subordinated one if we have some extra orthogonality property available. We construct several new Bellman functions, very different from Burkholder's function, and using them give an estimate of $L^p$ norm of a subordinated martingale, if the dominating martingale is orthogonal and $1<p\le 2$. We use Monge--Ampere equation to construct these Bellman functions.

Subordination by orthogonal martingales in $L^{p}, 1<p\le 2$

We are given two martingales on the filtration of the two dimensional Brownian motion. One is subordinated to another. We want to give an estimate of $L^p$-norm of a subordinated one via the same norm of a dominating one. In this setting this was done by Burkholder in \cite{Bu1}--\cite{Bu8}. If one of the martingales is orthogonal, the constant should drop. This was demonstrated in \cite{BaJ1}, when the orthogonality is attached to the subordinated martingale and when $2\le p<\infty$. This note contains an (almost obvious) observation that the same idea can be used in the case when the orthogonality is attached to a dominating martingale and $1<p\le 2$. Two other complementary regimes are considered in \cite{BJV_La}. When both martingales are orthogonal, see \cite{BJV_Le}. In these two papers the constants are sharp. We are not sure of the sharpness of the constant in the present note.

Two weight estimate for the Hilbert transform and corona decomposition for non-doubling measures

This article was written in 2005 and subsequently lost (at least by the third author). Recently it resurfaced due to one of the colleagues to whom a hard copy has been sent in 2005. We consider here a problem of finding necessary and sufficient conditions for the boundedness of two weight Calderón-Zygmund operators. We give such necessary and sufficient conditions in very natural terms, if the operator is the Hilbert transform, and the weights satisfy some very natural condition. The condition on weights was lifted in a recent paper of Michael Lacey, Eric Sawyer and Ignacio Uriarte-Tuero: "A characterization of the two weight norm inequality for the Hilbert transform", arXiv:1001.4043 [math.CA] 31 January 2010. The paper of Lacey--Sawyer-Uriarte-Tuero alliviated the "pivotal" condition used in a present article and replaced it by the very interesting and correct energy condition, which, unlike the "pivotal" condition turned out to be also necessary. The paper of Lacey-Sawyer-Uriarte-Tuero used the present article in its main aspect. The thrust of the present article is to use the methods of nonhomogeneous Harmonoc Analysis together with a several paraproducts arising from a certain stopping time argument. In view of the importance of the present article for Lacey--Sawyer-Uriarte-Tuero's paper arXiv:1001.4043 [math.CA] 31 January 2010, we present it to the attention of the reader. Drawing no parallels, "Darwin spent 1838-1859 getting ready to publish "On the Origin of Species" without actually publishing it, only brooding over beaks of finches".

Bergman-type Singular Integral Operators on Metric Spaces

In this paper we study ``Bergman-type'' singular integral operators on Ahlfors regular metric spaces. The main result of the paper demonstrates that if a singular integral operator on a Ahlfors regular metric space satisfies an additional estimate, then knowing the ``T(1)'' conditions for the operator imply that the operator is bounded on $L^2$. The method of proof of the main result is an extension and another application of the work originated by Nazarov, Treil and the first author on non-homogeneous harmonic analysis.

Weak type estimates and Cotlar inequalities for Calderón-Zygmund operators in nonhomogeneous spaces

In the paper we consider Calderón-Zygmund operators in nonhomogeneous spaces. We are going to prove the analogs of classical results for homogeneous spaces. Namely, we prove that a Calderón-Zygmund operator is of weak type if it is bounded in $L^2$. We also prove several versions of Cotlar's inequality for maximal singular operator. One version of Cotlar's inequality (a simpler one) is proved in Euclidean setting, another one in a more abstract setting when Besicovich covering lemma is not available. We obtain also the weak type of maximal singular operator from these inequalities.
