Entire functions of exponential type represented by pseudo-random and random Taylor series

We study the influence of the multipliers $ξ(n)$ on the angular distribution of zeroes of the Taylor series \[ F_ξ(z) = \sum_{n\ge 0} ξ(n) \frac{z^n}{n!}\,. \] We show that the distribution of zeroes of $ F_ξ$ is governed by certain autocorrelations of the sequence $ ξ$. Using this guiding principle, we consider several examples of random and pseudo-random sequences $ξ$ and, in particular, answer some questions posed by Chen and Littlewood in 1967. As a by-product we show that if $ξ$ is a stationary random integer-valued sequence, then either it is periodic, or its spectral measure has no gaps in its support. The same conclusion is true if $ξ$ is a complex-valued stationary ergodic sequence that takes values from a uniformly discrete set.

Asymptotic laws for the spatial distribution and the number of connected components of zero sets of Gaussian random functions

We study the asymptotic laws for the spatial distribution and the number of connected components of zero sets of smooth Gaussian random functions of several real variables. The primary examples are various Gaussian ensembles of real-valued polynomials (algebraic or trigonometric) of large degree on the sphere or torus, and translation-invariant smooth Gaussian functions on the Euclidean space restricted to large domains.

Distribution of zeroes of Rademacher Taylor series

We find the asymptotics of the counting function of zeroes of random entire functions represented by Rademacher Taylor series. We also give the asymptotics of the weighted counting function, which takes into account the arguments of zeroes. These results answer several questions left open after the pioneering work of Littlewood and Offord of 1948. The proofs are based on our recent result on the logarithmic integrability of Rademacher Fourier series.

Weighted exponential approximation and non-classical orthogonal spectral measures

A long-standing open problem in harmonic analysis is: given a non-negative measure $μ$ on $\mathbb R$, find the infimal width of frequencies needed to approximate any function in $L^2(μ)$. We consider this problem in the "perturbative regime", and characterize asymptotic smallness of perturbations of measures which do not change that infimal width. Then we apply this result to show that there are no local restrictions on the structure of orthogonal spectral measures of one-dimensional Schrodinger operators on a finite interval. This answers a question raised by V.A.Marchenko.

Correlation functions for random complex zeroes: strong clustering and local universality

We prove strong clustering of k-point correlation functions of zeroes of Gaussian Entire Functions. In the course of the proof, we also obtain universal local bounds for k-point functions of zeroes of arbitrary nondegenerate Gaussian analytic functions. In the second part of the paper, we show that strong clustering yields the asymptotic normality of fluctuations of some linear statistics of zeroes of Gaussian Entire Functions, in particular, of the number of zeroes in measurable domains of large area. This complements our recent results from the paper "Fluctuations in random complex zeroes" (arXiv:1003.4251v1).

Fluctuations in random complex zeroes: Asymptotic normality revisited

By random complex zeroes we mean the zero set of a random entire function whose Taylor coefficients are independent complex-valued Gaussian variables, and the variance of the k-th coefficient is 1/k!. This zero set is distribution invariant with respect to isometries of the complex plane. Extending the previous results of Sodin and Tsirelson, we compute the variance of linear statistics of random complex zeroes, and find close to optimal conditions on a test-function that yield asymptotic normality of fluctuations of the corresponding linear statistics. We also provide examples of test-functions with abnormal fluctuations of linear statistics.

On the Number of Nodal Domains of Random Spherical Harmonics

Let N(f) be a number of nodal domains of a random Gaussian spherical harmonic f of degree n. We prove that as n grows to infinity, the mean of N(f)/n^2 tends to a positive constant, and that N(f)/n^2 exponentially concentrates around that constant. This result is consistent with predictions made by Bogomolny and Schmit using a percolation-like model for nodal domains of random Gaussian plane waves.
