Inverse localization and global approximation for some Schrödinger operators on hyperbolic spaces

We consider the question of whether the high-energy eigenfunctions of certain Schrödinger operators on the $d$-dimensional hyperbolic space of constant curvature $-κ^2$ are flexible enough to approximate an arbitrary solution of the Helmholtz equation $Δh+h=0$ on $\mathbf{R}^d$, over the natural length scale $O(λ^{-1/2})$ determined by the eigenvalue $λ\gg 1$. This problem is motivated by the fact that, by the asymptotics of the local Weyl law, approximate Laplace eigenfunctions do have this approximation property on any compact Riemannian manifold. In this paper we are specifically interested in the Coulomb and harmonic oscillator operators on the hyperbolic spaces $\mathbf{H}^d(κ)$. As the dimension of the space of bound states of these operators tends to infinity as $κ$ tends to 0, one can hope to approximate solutions to the Helmholtz equation by eigenfunctions for some $κ> 0$ that is not fixed a priori. Our main result shows that this is indeed the case, under suitable hypotheses. We also prove a global approximation theorem with decay for the Helmholtz equation on manifolds that are isometric to the hyperbolic space outside a compact set, and consider an application to the study of the heat equation on $\mathbf{H}^d(κ)$. Although global approximation and inverse approximation results are heuristically related in that both theorems explore flexibility properties of solutions to elliptic equations on hyperbolic spaces, we will see that the underlying ideas behind these theorems are very different.

Limiting measures and energy growth for sequences of solutions to Taubes's Seiberg-Witten equations

We consider sequences of solutions $(ψ_n,A_n)_{n=1}^\infty$ to Taubes's modified Seiberg-Witten equations, associated with a fixed volume-preserving vector field $X$ on a 3-manifold and corresponding to arbitrarily large values of the strength parameter $r_n \to \infty$. In Taubes's work, the asymptotic behavior of these solutions is related to the dynamics of $X$. We consider the rather unexplored case of sequences of solutions whose energy is not uniformly bounded as $n\to\infty$. Our first main result shows that when the energy grows more slowly than $r_n^{1/2}$, the limiting nodal set of the solutions converges to an invariant set of the vector field $X$. The main tool we use is a novel maximum principle for the solutions with the key property that it remains valid in the unbounded energy case. As a byproduct, in the usual case of sequences of solutions with bounded energy, we obtain a new, more straightforward proof of Taubes's result on the existence of periodic orbits that does not involve a local analysis or the vortex equations. Our second main result proves that, contrary to what happens in the bounded energy case, when the energy is unbounded there are no local restrictions to the limiting measures that may arise in the modified Seiberg-Witten equations. Furthermore, we obtain a connection about the dimension of the support of the limiting measure (as expressed through a $d$-Frostman property) and the energy growth of the sequence of local solutions we construct.

MHD equilibria with nonconstant pressure in nondegenerate toroidal domains

We prove the existence of piecewise smooth MHD equilibria in three-dimensional toroidal domains of $\mathbf{R}^3$ where the pressure is constant on the boundary but not in the interior. The pressure is piecewise constant and the plasma current exhibits an arbitrary number of current sheets. We also establish the existence of free boundary steady states surrounded by vacuum with an external surface current. The toroidal domains where these equilibria are shown to exist do not need to be small perturbations of an axisymmetric domain, and in fact they can have any knotted topology. The building blocks we use in our construction are analytic toroidal domains satisfying a certain nondegeneracy condition, which roughly states that there exists a force-free field that is ergodic on the surface of the domain. The proof involves three main ingredients: a gluing construction of piecewise smooth MHD equilibria, a Hamilton-Jacobi equation on the two-dimensional torus that can be understood as a nonlinear deformation of the cohomological equation (so the nondegeneracy assumption plays a major role in the corresponding analysis), and a new KAM theorem tailored for the study of divergence-free fields in three dimensions whose Poincaré map cannot be computed explicitly.

Non-integrability and chaos for natural Hamiltonian systems with a random potential

Consider the ensemble of Gaussian random potentials $\{V^L(q)\}_{L=1}^\infty$ on the $d$-dimensional torus where, essentially, $V^L(q)$ is a real-valued trigonometric polynomial of degree $L$ whose coefficients are independent standard normal variables. Our main result ensures that, with a probability tending to 1 as $L\to\infty$, the dynamical system associated with the natural Hamiltonian function defined by this random potential, $H^L:=\frac12|p|^2+ V^L(q)$, exhibits a number of chaotic regions which coexist with a positive-volume set of invariant tori. In particular, these systems are typically neither integrable with non-degenerate first integrals nor ergodic. An analogous result for random natural Hamiltonian systems defined on the cotangent bundle of an arbitrary compact Riemannian manifold is presented too.

A characterization of 3D steady Euler flows using commuting zero-flux homologies

We characterize, using commuting zero-flux homologies, those volume-preserving vector fields on a $3$-manifold that are steady solutions of the Euler equations for some Riemannian metric. This result extends Sullivan's homological characterization of geodesible flows in the volume-preserving case. As an application, we show that the steady Euler flows cannot be constructed using plugs (as in Wilson's or Kuperberg's constructions). Analogous results in higher dimensions are also proved.

Beltrami fields exhibit knots and chaos almost surely

In this paper we show that, with probability 1, a random Beltrami field exhibits chaotic regions that coexist with invariant tori of complicated topologies. The motivation to consider this question, which arises in the study of stationary Euler flows in dimension 3, is V.I. Arnold's 1965 conjecture that a typical Beltrami field exhibits the same complexity as the restriction to an energy hypersurface of a generic Hamiltonian system with two degrees of freedom. The proof hinges on the obtention of asymptotic bounds for the number of horseshoes, zeros, and knotted invariant tori and periodic trajectories that a Gaussian random Beltrami field exhibits, which we obtain through a nontrivial extension of the Nazarov--Sodin theory for Gaussian random monochromatic waves and the application of different tools from the theory of dynamical systems, including KAM theory, Melnikov analysis and hyperbolicity. Our results hold both in the case of Beltrami fields on $\mathbf{R}^3$ and of high-frequency Beltrami fields on the 3-torus.

Non-existence of axisymmetric optimal domains with smooth boundary for the first curl eigenvalue

We say that a bounded domain $Ω$ is optimal for the first positive curl eigenvalue $μ_1(Ω)$ if $μ_1(Ω)\leq μ_1(Ω')$ for any domain $Ω'$ with the same volume. In spite of the fact that $μ_1(Ω)$ is uniformly lower bounded in terms of the volume, in this paper we prove that there are no axisymmetric optimal (and even locally minimizing) domains with $C^{2,α}$ boundary that satisfies a mild technical assumption. As a particular case, this rules out the existence of $C^{2,α}$ optimal axisymmetric domains with a convex section. An analogous result holds in the case of the first negative curl eigenvalue.

On the singular Weinstein conjecture and the existence of escape orbits for $b$-Beltrami fields

Motivated by Poincaré's orbits going to infinity in the (restricted) three-body (see [26] and [6]), we investigate the generic existence of heteroclinic-like orbits in a neighbourhood of the critical set of a $b$-contact form. This is done by using the singular counterpart [3] of Etnyre--Ghrist's contact/Beltrami correspondence [9], and genericity results concerning eigenfunctions of the Laplacian established by Uhlenbeck [29]. Specifically, we analyze the $b$-Beltrami vector fields on $b$-manifolds of dimension $3$ and prove that for a generic asymptotically exact $b$-metric they exhibit escape orbits. We also show that a generic asymptotically symmetric $b$-Beltrami vector field on an asymptotically flat $b$-manifold has a generalized singular periodic orbit and at least $4$ escape orbits. Generalized singular periodic orbits are trajectories of the vector field whose $α$- and $ω$-limit sets intersect the critical surface. These results are a first step towards proving the singular Weinstein conjecture.

Overdetermined boundary problems with nonconstant Dirichlet and Neumann data

In this paper we consider the overdetermined boundary problem for a general second order semilinear elliptic equation on bounded domains of $\mathbf{R}^n$, where one prescribes both the Dirichlet and Neumann data of the solution. We are interested in the case where the data are not necessarily constant and where the coefficients of the equation can depend on the position, so that the overdetermined problem does not generally admit a radial solution. Our main result is that, nevertheless, under minor technical hypotheses nontrivial solutions to the overdetermined boundary problem always exist.

The helicity uniqueness conjecture in 3D hydrodynamics

We prove that the helicity is the only regular Casimir function for the coadjoint action of the volume-preserving diffeomorphism group $\text{SDiff}(M)$ on smooth exact divergence-free vector fields on a closed three-dimensional manifold $M$. More precisely, any regular $C^1$ functional defined on the space of $C^\infty$ (more generally, $C^k$, $k\ge 4$) exact divergence-free vector fields and invariant under arbitrary volume-preserving diffeomorphisms can be expressed as a $C^1$ function of the helicity. This gives a complete description of Casimirs for adjoint and coadjoint actions of $\text{SDiff}(M)$ in 3D and completes the proof of Arnold-Khesin's 1998 conjecture for a manifold $M$ with trivial first homology group. Our proofs make use of different tools from the theory of dynamical systems, including normal forms for divergence-free vector fields, the Poincaré-Birkhoff theorem, and a division lemma for vector fields with hyperbolic zeros.

Global, local and dense non-mixing of the 3D Euler equation

We prove a non-mixing property of the flow of the 3D Euler equation which has a local nature: in any neighbourhood of a "typical" steady solution there is a generic set of initial conditions, such that the corresponding Euler flows will never enter a vicinity of the original steady one. More precisely, we establish that there exist stationary solutions $u_0$ of the Euler equation on $\mathbb S^3$ and divergence-free vector fields $v_0$ arbitrarily close to $u_0$, whose (non-steady) evolution by the Euler flow cannot converge in the $C^k$ Hölder norm ($k>10$ non-integer) to any stationary state in a small (but fixed a priori) $C^k$-neighbourhood of $u_0$. The set of such initial conditions $v_0$ is open and dense in the vicinity of $u_0$. A similar (but weaker) statement also holds for the Euler flow on $\mathbb T^3$. Two essential ingredients in the proof of this result are a geometric description of all steady states near certain nondegenerate stationary solutions, and a KAM-type argument to generate knotted invariant tori from elliptic orbits.

Helicity is the only integral invariant of volume-preserving transformations

We prove that any regular integral invariant of volume-preserving transformations is equivalent to the helicity. Specifically, given a functional $\mathcal I$ defined on exact divergence-free vector fields of class $C^1$ on a compact 3-manifold that is associated with a well-behaved integral kernel, we prove that $\mathcal I$ is invariant under arbitrary volume-preserving diffeomorphisms if and only if it is a function of the helicity.

Vortex reconnection in the three dimensional Navier-Stokes equations

We prove that the vortex structures of solutions to the 3D Navier-Stokes equations can change their topology without any loss of regularity. More precisely, we construct smooth high-frequency solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations where vortex lines and vortex tubes of arbitrarily complicated topologies are created and destroyed in arbitrarily small times. This instance of vortex reconnection is structurally stable and in perfect agreement with the existing computer simulations and experiments. We also provide a (non-structurally stable) scenario where the destruction of vortex structures is instantaneous.

Arnold diffusion of charged particles in ABC magnetic fields

We prove the existence of diffusing solutions in the motion of a charged particle in the presence of an ABC magnetic field. The equations of motion are modeled by a 3DOF Hamiltonian system depending on two parameters. For small values of these parameters, we obtain a normally hyperbolic invariant manifold and we apply the so-called geometric methods for a priori unstable systems developed by A. Delshams, R. de la Llave, and T.M. Seara. We characterize explicitly sufficient conditions for the existence of a transition chain of invariant tori having heteroclinic connections, thus obtaining global instability (Arnold diffusion). We also check the obtained conditions in a computer assisted proof. ABC magnetic fields are the simplest force-free type solutions of the magnetohydrodynamics equations with periodic boundary conditions, so our results are of potential interest in the study of the motion of plasma charged particles in a tokamak.

Bounded solutions to the Allen-Cahn equation with level sets of any compact topology

We make use of the flexibility of infinite-index solutions to the Allen-Cahn equation to show that, given any compact hypersurface $Σ$ of R^d, with $d\geq 4$, there is a bounded entire solution of the Allen-Cahn equation on R^d whose zero level set has a connected component diffeomorphic (and arbitrarily close) to a rescaling of $Σ$. More generally, we prove the existence of solutions with a finite number of compact connected components of prescribed topology in their zero level sets.

Foliated vector fields without periodic orbits

In this article parametric versions of Wilson's plug and Kuperberg's plug are discussed. We show that there is a weak homotopy equivalence induced by the inclusion between the space of non-singular vector fields tangent to a foliation and the subspace of those without closed orbits, as long as the leaves of the foliation have dimension at least 3. We contrast this with the case of foliations by surfaces in 3-manifolds.

Knotted structures in high-energy Beltrami fields on the torus and the sphere

Let S be a finite union of (pairwise disjoint but possibly knotted and linked) closed curves and tubes in the round sphere S^3 or in the flat torus T^3. In the case of the torus, S is further assumed to be contained in a contractible subset of T^3. In this paper we show that for any sufficiently large odd integer λthere exists a Beltrami field on S^3 or T^3 satisfying curl u = λu and with a collection of vortex lines and vortex tubes given by S, up to an ambient diffeomorphism.

Prescribing the nodal set of the first eigenfunction in each conformal class

We consider the problem of prescribing the nodal set of the first nontrivial eigenfunction of the Laplacian in a conformal class. Our main result is that, given a separating closed hypersurface $Σ$ in a compact Riemannian manifold $(M,g_0)$ of dimension $d \geq 3$, there is a metric $g$ on $M$ conformally equivalent to $g_0$ and with the same volume such that the nodal set of its first nontrivial eigenfunction is a $C^0$-small deformation of $Σ$ (i.e., $Φ(Σ)$ with $Φ: M \to M$ a diffeomorphism arbitrarily close to the identity in the $C^0$ norm).

Stationary isothermic surfaces in Euclidean 3-space

Let $Ω$ be a domain in $\mathbb R^3$ with $\partialΩ= \partial\left(\mathbb R^3\setminus \overlineΩ\right)$, where $\partialΩ$ is unbounded and connected, and let $u$ be the solution of the Cauchy problem for the heat equation $\partial_t u= Δu$ over $\mathbb R^3,$ where the initial data is the characteristic function of the set $Ω^c = \mathbb R^3\setminus Ω$. We show that, if there exists a stationary isothermic surface $Γ$ of $u$ with $Γ\cap \partialΩ= \varnothing$, then both $\partialΩ$ and $Γ$ must be either parallel planes or co-axial circular cylinders . This theorem completes the classification of stationary isothermic surfaces in the case that $Γ\cap\partialΩ=\varnothing$ and $\partialΩ$ is unbounded. To prove this result, we establish a similar theorem for {\it uniformly dense domains } in $\mathbb R^3$, a notion that was introduced by Magnanini, Prajapat \& Sakaguchi in \cite{MPS2006tams}. In the proof, we use methods from the theory of surfaces with constant mean curvature, combined with a careful analysis of certain asymptotic expansions and a surprising connection with the theory of transnormal functions.

Beltrami fields with a nonconstant proportionality factor are rare

We consider the existence of Beltrami fields with a nonconstant proportionality factor $f$ in an open subset $U$ of $\mathbf{R}^3$. By reformulating this problem as a constrained evolution equation on a surface, we find an explicit differential equation that $f$ must satisfy whenever there is a nontrivial Beltrami field with this factor. This ensures that there are no nontrivial solutions for an open and dense set of factors $f$ in the $C^k$ topology. In particular, there are no nontrivial Beltrami fields whenever $f$ has a regular level set diffeomorphic to the sphere. This provides an explanation of the helical flow paradox of Morgulis, Yudovich and Zaslavsky.

Eigenfunctions with prescribed nodal sets

In this paper we consider the problem of prescribing the nodal set of low-energy eigenfunctions of the Laplacian. Our main result is that, given any separating closed hypersurface Σin a compact n-manifold M, there is a Riemannian metric on M such that the nodal set of its first nontrivial eigenfunction is Σ. We present a number of variations on this result, which enable us to show, in particular, that the first nontrivial eigenfunction can have as many non-degenerate critical points as one wishes.

Existence of knotted vortex tubes in steady Euler flows

We prove the existence of knotted and linked thin vortex tubes for steady solutions to the incompressible Euler equation in R^3. More precisely, given a finite collection of (possibly linked and knotted) disjoint thin tubes in R^3, we show that they can be transformed with a C^m-small diffeomorphism into a set of vortex tubes of a Beltrami field that tends to zero at infinity. The structure of the vortex lines in the tubes is extremely rich, presenting a positive-measure set of invariant tori and infinitely many periodic vortex lines. The problem of the existence of steady knotted vortex tubes can be traced back to Lord Kelvin.

KAM theory and the 3D Euler equation

We prove that the dynamical system defined by the hydrodynamical Euler equation on any closed Riemannian 3-manifold $M$ is not mixing in the $C^k$ topology ($k > 4$ and non-integer) for any prescribed value of helicity and sufficiently large values of energy. This can be regarded as a 3D version of Nadirashvili's and Shnirelman's theorems showing the existence of wandering solutions for the 2D Euler equation. Moreover, we obtain an obstruction for the mixing under the Euler flow of $C^k$-neighborhoods of divergence-free vectorfields on $M$. On the way we construct a family of functionals on the space of divergence-free $C^1$ vectorfields on the manifold, which are integrals of motion of the 3D Euler equation. Given a vectorfield these functionals measure the part of the manifold foliated by ergodic invariant tori of fixed isotopy types. We use the KAM theory to establish some continuity properties of these functionals in the $C^k$-topology. This allows one to get a lower bound for the $C^k$-distance between a divergence-free vectorfield (in particular, a steady solution) and a trajectory of the Euler flow.

Gradient dynamical systems on open surfaces and critical points of Green's functions

We study the dynamics of the vector field on an open surface given by the gradient of a Green's function. This dynamical approach enables us to show that this field induces an invariant decomposition of the surface as the union of a disk and a 1-skeleton that encodes the topology of the surface. We analyze the structure of this 1-skeleton, thereby obtaining, in particular, a topological upper bound for the number of critical points a Green's function can have. Connections between the dynamical properties of the gradient field and the conformal structure of the surface are also discussed.

Tying knots in light fields

We construct a new family of null solutions to Maxwell's equations in free space whose field lines encode all torus knots and links. The evolution of these null fields, analogous to a compressible flow along the Poynting vector that is both geodesic and shear-free, preserves the topology of the knots and links. Our approach combines the Bateman and spinor formalisms for the construction of null fields with complex polynomials on $\mathbb{S}^3$. We examine and illustrate the geometry and evolution of the solutions, making manifest the structure of nested knotted tori filled by the field lines.

A Note on the First Integrals of Vector Fields with Integrating Factors and Normalizers

We prove a sufficient condition for the existence of explicit first integrals for vector fields which admit an integrating factor. This theorem recovers and extends previous results in the literature on the integrability of vector fields which are volume preserving and possess nontrivial normalizers. Our approach is geometric and coordinate-free and hence it works on any smooth orientable manifold.

Submanifolds that are level sets of solutions to a second-order elliptic PDE

Motivated by a question of Rubel, we consider the problem of characterizing which noncompact hypersurfaces in $\RR^n$ can be regular level sets of a harmonic function modulo a $C^\infty$ diffeomorphism, as well as certain generalizations to other PDEs. We prove a versatile sufficient condition that shows, in particular, that any (possibly disconnected) algebraic noncompact hypersurface can be transformed onto a union of components of the zero set of a harmonic function via a diffeomorphism of $\RR^n$. The technique we use, which is a significant improvement of the basic strategy we recently applied to construct solutions to the Euler equation with knotted stream lines (Ann. of Math., in press), combines robust but not explicit local constructions with appropriate global approximation theorems. In view of applications to a problem of Berry and Dennis, intersections of level sets are also studied.

Integrable embeddings and foliations

A k-submanifold L of an open n-manifold M is called weakly integrable (WI) [resp. strongly integrable (SI)] if there exists a submersion Φ:M\to R^{n-k} such that L\subset Φ^{-1}(0) [resp. L= Φ^{-1}(0)]. In this work we study the following problem, first stated in a particular case by Costa et al. (Invent. Math. 1988): which submanifolds L of an open manifold M are WI or SI? For general M, we explicitly solve the case k=n-1 and provide necessary and sufficient conditions for submanifolds to be WI and SI in higher codimension. As particular cases we recover the theorem of Bouma and Hector (Indagationes Math. 1983) asserting that any open orientable surface is SI in R^3, and Watanabe's and Miyoshi's theorems (Topology 1993 and 1995) claiming that any link is WI in an open 3-manifold. In the case M=R^n we fully characterize WI and SI submanifolds, we provide examples of 3- and 7-manifolds which are not WI and we show that a theorem by Miyoshi (Topology 1995) which states that any link in R^3 is SI does not hold in general. The right analogue to Miyoshi's theorem is also proved, implying in particular the surprising result that no knot in R^3 is SI. Our results applied to the theory of foliations of Euclidean spaces give rise to some striking corollaries: using some topological invariants we classify all the submanifolds of R^n which can be realized as proper leaves of foliations; we prove that S^3 can be realized as a leaf of a foliation of R^n, n\geq 7, but not in R^5 or R^6, which partially answers a question by Vogt (Math. Ann. 1993); we construct open 3-manifolds which cannot be leaves of a foliation of any compact 4-manifold but are proper leaves in R^4. The theory of WI and SI submanifolds is a framework where many classical tools of differential and algebraic topology play a prominent role: h-principle, complete intersections and the theory of immersions and embeddings.

Nondegeneracy of the eigenvalues of the Hodge Laplacian for generic metrics on 3-manifolds

In this paper we analyze the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Hodge Laplacian for generic metrics on a closed 3-manifold $M$. In particular, we show that the nonzero eigenvalues are simple and the zero set of the eigenforms of degree 1 or 2 consists of isolated points for a residual set of $C^r$ metrics on $M$, for any integer $r\geq2$. The proof of this result hinges on a detailed study of the Beltrami (or rotational) operator on co-exact 1-forms.

A geometric approach to the equilibrium shapes of self-gravitating fluids

The classification of the possible equilibrium shapes that a self-gravitating fluid can take in a Riemannian manifold is a classical problem in mathematical physics. In this paper it is proved that the equilibrium shapes are isoparametric submanifolds. Some geometric properties of the equilibrium shapes are also obtained, specifically the relationship with the isoperimetric problem and the group of isometries of the manifold. This work follows the new geometric approach to the problem developed by the author (see math-ph/0305038)
