Non-density of nodal lines in the clamped plate problem

We show that, in contrast to the case of Laplace eigenfunctions, the nodal set of high energy eigenfunctions of the clamped plate problem is not necessarily dense, and can in fact exhibit macroscopic "nodal voids". Specifically, we show that there are small deformations of the unit disk admitting a clamped plate eigenfunction of arbitrarily high frequency that does not vanish in a disk of radius 0.44.

Inverse localization and global approximation for some Schrödinger operators on hyperbolic spaces

We consider the question of whether the high-energy eigenfunctions of certain Schrödinger operators on the $d$-dimensional hyperbolic space of constant curvature $-κ^2$ are flexible enough to approximate an arbitrary solution of the Helmholtz equation $Δh+h=0$ on $\mathbf{R}^d$, over the natural length scale $O(λ^{-1/2})$ determined by the eigenvalue $λ\gg 1$. This problem is motivated by the fact that, by the asymptotics of the local Weyl law, approximate Laplace eigenfunctions do have this approximation property on any compact Riemannian manifold. In this paper we are specifically interested in the Coulomb and harmonic oscillator operators on the hyperbolic spaces $\mathbf{H}^d(κ)$. As the dimension of the space of bound states of these operators tends to infinity as $κ$ tends to 0, one can hope to approximate solutions to the Helmholtz equation by eigenfunctions for some $κ> 0$ that is not fixed a priori. Our main result shows that this is indeed the case, under suitable hypotheses. We also prove a global approximation theorem with decay for the Helmholtz equation on manifolds that are isometric to the hyperbolic space outside a compact set, and consider an application to the study of the heat equation on $\mathbf{H}^d(κ)$. Although global approximation and inverse approximation results are heuristically related in that both theorems explore flexibility properties of solutions to elliptic equations on hyperbolic spaces, we will see that the underlying ideas behind these theorems are very different.

Limiting measures and energy growth for sequences of solutions to Taubes's Seiberg-Witten equations

We consider sequences of solutions $(ψ_n,A_n)_{n=1}^\infty$ to Taubes's modified Seiberg-Witten equations, associated with a fixed volume-preserving vector field $X$ on a 3-manifold and corresponding to arbitrarily large values of the strength parameter $r_n \to \infty$. In Taubes's work, the asymptotic behavior of these solutions is related to the dynamics of $X$. We consider the rather unexplored case of sequences of solutions whose energy is not uniformly bounded as $n\to\infty$. Our first main result shows that when the energy grows more slowly than $r_n^{1/2}$, the limiting nodal set of the solutions converges to an invariant set of the vector field $X$. The main tool we use is a novel maximum principle for the solutions with the key property that it remains valid in the unbounded energy case. As a byproduct, in the usual case of sequences of solutions with bounded energy, we obtain a new, more straightforward proof of Taubes's result on the existence of periodic orbits that does not involve a local analysis or the vortex equations. Our second main result proves that, contrary to what happens in the bounded energy case, when the energy is unbounded there are no local restrictions to the limiting measures that may arise in the modified Seiberg-Witten equations. Furthermore, we obtain a connection about the dimension of the support of the limiting measure (as expressed through a $d$-Frostman property) and the energy growth of the sequence of local solutions we construct.

MHD equilibria with nonconstant pressure in nondegenerate toroidal domains

We prove the existence of piecewise smooth MHD equilibria in three-dimensional toroidal domains of $\mathbf{R}^3$ where the pressure is constant on the boundary but not in the interior. The pressure is piecewise constant and the plasma current exhibits an arbitrary number of current sheets. We also establish the existence of free boundary steady states surrounded by vacuum with an external surface current. The toroidal domains where these equilibria are shown to exist do not need to be small perturbations of an axisymmetric domain, and in fact they can have any knotted topology. The building blocks we use in our construction are analytic toroidal domains satisfying a certain nondegeneracy condition, which roughly states that there exists a force-free field that is ergodic on the surface of the domain. The proof involves three main ingredients: a gluing construction of piecewise smooth MHD equilibria, a Hamilton-Jacobi equation on the two-dimensional torus that can be understood as a nonlinear deformation of the cohomological equation (so the nondegeneracy assumption plays a major role in the corresponding analysis), and a new KAM theorem tailored for the study of divergence-free fields in three dimensions whose Poincaré map cannot be computed explicitly.

Non-integrability and chaos for natural Hamiltonian systems with a random potential

Consider the ensemble of Gaussian random potentials $\{V^L(q)\}_{L=1}^\infty$ on the $d$-dimensional torus where, essentially, $V^L(q)$ is a real-valued trigonometric polynomial of degree $L$ whose coefficients are independent standard normal variables. Our main result ensures that, with a probability tending to 1 as $L\to\infty$, the dynamical system associated with the natural Hamiltonian function defined by this random potential, $H^L:=\frac12|p|^2+ V^L(q)$, exhibits a number of chaotic regions which coexist with a positive-volume set of invariant tori. In particular, these systems are typically neither integrable with non-degenerate first integrals nor ergodic. An analogous result for random natural Hamiltonian systems defined on the cotangent bundle of an arbitrary compact Riemannian manifold is presented too.

Beltrami fields exhibit knots and chaos almost surely

In this paper we show that, with probability 1, a random Beltrami field exhibits chaotic regions that coexist with invariant tori of complicated topologies. The motivation to consider this question, which arises in the study of stationary Euler flows in dimension 3, is V.I. Arnold's 1965 conjecture that a typical Beltrami field exhibits the same complexity as the restriction to an energy hypersurface of a generic Hamiltonian system with two degrees of freedom. The proof hinges on the obtention of asymptotic bounds for the number of horseshoes, zeros, and knotted invariant tori and periodic trajectories that a Gaussian random Beltrami field exhibits, which we obtain through a nontrivial extension of the Nazarov--Sodin theory for Gaussian random monochromatic waves and the application of different tools from the theory of dynamical systems, including KAM theory, Melnikov analysis and hyperbolicity. Our results hold both in the case of Beltrami fields on $\mathbf{R}^3$ and of high-frequency Beltrami fields on the 3-torus.

Carleman estimates with sharp weights and boundary observability for wave operators with critically singular potentials

We establish a new family of Carleman inequalities for wave operators on cylindrical spacetime domains containing a potential that is critically singular, diverging as an inverse square on all the boundary of the domain. These estimates are sharp in the sense that they capture both the natural boundary conditions and the natural $H^1$-energy. The proof is based around three key ingredients: the choice of a novel Carleman weight with rather singular derivatives on the boundary, a generalization of the classical Morawetz inequality that allows for inverse-square singularities, and the systematic use of derivative operations adapted to the potential. As an application of these estimates, we prove a boundary observability property for the associated wave equations.

Non-existence of axisymmetric optimal domains with smooth boundary for the first curl eigenvalue

We say that a bounded domain $Ω$ is optimal for the first positive curl eigenvalue $μ_1(Ω)$ if $μ_1(Ω)\leq μ_1(Ω')$ for any domain $Ω'$ with the same volume. In spite of the fact that $μ_1(Ω)$ is uniformly lower bounded in terms of the volume, in this paper we prove that there are no axisymmetric optimal (and even locally minimizing) domains with $C^{2,α}$ boundary that satisfies a mild technical assumption. As a particular case, this rules out the existence of $C^{2,α}$ optimal axisymmetric domains with a convex section. An analogous result holds in the case of the first negative curl eigenvalue.

Overdetermined boundary problems with nonconstant Dirichlet and Neumann data

In this paper we consider the overdetermined boundary problem for a general second order semilinear elliptic equation on bounded domains of $\mathbf{R}^n$, where one prescribes both the Dirichlet and Neumann data of the solution. We are interested in the case where the data are not necessarily constant and where the coefficients of the equation can depend on the position, so that the overdetermined problem does not generally admit a radial solution. Our main result is that, nevertheless, under minor technical hypotheses nontrivial solutions to the overdetermined boundary problem always exist.

Fractional powers of the wave operator via Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps in anti-de Sitter spaces

We show that the fractional wave operator, which is usually studied in the context of hypersingular integrals but had not yet appeared in mathematical physics, can be constructed as the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map associated with the Klein-Gordon equation in anti-de Sitter spacetimes. Several generalizations of this relation will be discussed too.

Helicity is the only integral invariant of volume-preserving transformations

We prove that any regular integral invariant of volume-preserving transformations is equivalent to the helicity. Specifically, given a functional $\mathcal I$ defined on exact divergence-free vector fields of class $C^1$ on a compact 3-manifold that is associated with a well-behaved integral kernel, we prove that $\mathcal I$ is invariant under arbitrary volume-preserving diffeomorphisms if and only if it is a function of the helicity.

Vortex reconnection in the three dimensional Navier-Stokes equations

We prove that the vortex structures of solutions to the 3D Navier-Stokes equations can change their topology without any loss of regularity. More precisely, we construct smooth high-frequency solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations where vortex lines and vortex tubes of arbitrarily complicated topologies are created and destroyed in arbitrarily small times. This instance of vortex reconnection is structurally stable and in perfect agreement with the existing computer simulations and experiments. We also provide a (non-structurally stable) scenario where the destruction of vortex structures is instantaneous.

Bounded solutions to the Allen-Cahn equation with level sets of any compact topology

We make use of the flexibility of infinite-index solutions to the Allen-Cahn equation to show that, given any compact hypersurface $Σ$ of R^d, with $d\geq 4$, there is a bounded entire solution of the Allen-Cahn equation on R^d whose zero level set has a connected component diffeomorphic (and arbitrarily close) to a rescaling of $Σ$. More generally, we prove the existence of solutions with a finite number of compact connected components of prescribed topology in their zero level sets.

Determining an asymptotically AdS spacetime from data on its conformal boundary

An outstanding question lying at the core of the AdS/CFT correspondence in string theory is the holographic prescription problem for Einstein metrics, which asserts that one can slightly perturb the conformal geometry at infinity of the anti-de Sitter space and still obtain an asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime that satisfies the Einstein equations with a negative cosmological constant. The purpose of this paper is to address this question by providing a precise quantitative statement of the real-time holographic principle for Einstein spacetimes, to outline its proof and to discuss its physical implications.

Knotted structures in high-energy Beltrami fields on the torus and the sphere

Let S be a finite union of (pairwise disjoint but possibly knotted and linked) closed curves and tubes in the round sphere S^3 or in the flat torus T^3. In the case of the torus, S is further assumed to be contained in a contractible subset of T^3. In this paper we show that for any sufficiently large odd integer λthere exists a Beltrami field on S^3 or T^3 satisfying curl u = λu and with a collection of vortex lines and vortex tubes given by S, up to an ambient diffeomorphism.

Prescribing the nodal set of the first eigenfunction in each conformal class

We consider the problem of prescribing the nodal set of the first nontrivial eigenfunction of the Laplacian in a conformal class. Our main result is that, given a separating closed hypersurface $Σ$ in a compact Riemannian manifold $(M,g_0)$ of dimension $d \geq 3$, there is a metric $g$ on $M$ conformally equivalent to $g_0$ and with the same volume such that the nodal set of its first nontrivial eigenfunction is a $C^0$-small deformation of $Σ$ (i.e., $Φ(Σ)$ with $Φ: M \to M$ a diffeomorphism arbitrarily close to the identity in the $C^0$ norm).

The classical Darboux III oscillator: factorization, Spectrum Generating Algebra and solution to the equations of motion

In a recent paper the so-called Spectrum Generating Algebra (SGA) technique has been applied to the N-dimensional Taub-NUT system, a maximally superintegrable Hamiltonian system which can be interpreted as a one-parameter deformation of the Kepler-Coulomb system. Such a Hamiltonian is associated to a specific Bertrand space of non-constant curvature. The SGA procedure unveils the symmetry algebra underlying the Hamiltonian system and, moreover, enables one to solve the equations of motion. Here we will follow the same path to tackle the Darboux III system, another maximally superintegrable system, which can indeed be viewed as a natural deformation of the isotropic harmonic oscillator where the flat Euclidean space is again replaced by another space of non-constant curvature.

An exactly solvable deformation of the Coulomb problem associated with the Taub-NUT metric

In this paper we quantize the $N$-dimensional classical Hamiltonian system $H= \frac{|q|}{2(η+ |q|)} p^2-\frac{k}{η+|q|}$, that can be regarded as a deformation of the Coulomb problem with coupling constant $k$, that it is smoothly recovered in the limit $η\to 0$. Moreover, the kinetic energy term in $H$ is just the one corresponding to an $N$-dimensional Taub-NUT space, a fact that makes this system relevant from a geometric viewpoint. Since the Hamiltonian $H$ is known to be maximally superintegrable, we propose a quantization prescription that preserves such superintegrability in the quantum mechanical setting. We show that, to this end, one must choose as the kinetic part of the Hamiltonian the conformal Laplacian of the underlying Riemannian manifold, which combines the usual Laplace-Beltrami operator on the Taub-NUT manifold and a multiple of its scalar curvature. As a consequence, we obtain a novel exactly solvable deformation of the quantum Coulomb problem, whose spectrum is computed in closed form for positive values of $η$ and $k$, and showing that the well-known maximal degeneracy of the flat system is preserved in the deformed case. Several interesting algebraic and physical features of this new exactly solvable quantum system are analysed, and the quantization problem for negative values of $η$ and/or $k$ is also sketched.

Beltrami fields with a nonconstant proportionality factor are rare

We consider the existence of Beltrami fields with a nonconstant proportionality factor $f$ in an open subset $U$ of $\mathbf{R}^3$. By reformulating this problem as a constrained evolution equation on a surface, we find an explicit differential equation that $f$ must satisfy whenever there is a nontrivial Beltrami field with this factor. This ensures that there are no nontrivial solutions for an open and dense set of factors $f$ in the $C^k$ topology. In particular, there are no nontrivial Beltrami fields whenever $f$ has a regular level set diffeomorphic to the sphere. This provides an explanation of the helical flow paradox of Morgulis, Yudovich and Zaslavsky.

Eigenfunctions with prescribed nodal sets

In this paper we consider the problem of prescribing the nodal set of low-energy eigenfunctions of the Laplacian. Our main result is that, given any separating closed hypersurface Σin a compact n-manifold M, there is a Riemannian metric on M such that the nodal set of its first nontrivial eigenfunction is Σ. We present a number of variations on this result, which enable us to show, in particular, that the first nontrivial eigenfunction can have as many non-degenerate critical points as one wishes.

Exactly solvable deformations of the oscillator and Coulomb systems and their generalization

We present two maximally superintegrable Hamiltonian systems ${\cal H}_λ$ and ${\cal H}_η$ that are defined, respectively, on an $N$-dimensional spherically symmetric generalization of the Darboux surface of type III and on an $N$-dimensional Taub-NUT space. Afterwards, we show that the quantization of ${\cal H}_λ$ and ${\cal H}_η$ leads, respectively, to exactly solvable deformations (with parameters $λ$ and $η$) of the two basic quantum mechanical systems: the harmonic oscillator and the Coulomb problem. In both cases the quantization is performed in such a way that the maximal superintegrability of the classical Hamiltonian is fully preserved. In particular, we prove that this strong condition is fulfilled by applying the so-called conformal Laplace-Beltrami quantization prescription, where the conformal Laplacian operator contains the usual Laplace-Beltrami operator on the underlying manifold plus a term proportional to its scalar curvature (which in both cases has non-constant value). In this way, the eigenvalue problems for the quantum counterparts of ${\cal H}_λ$ and ${\cal H}_η$ can be rigorously solved, and it is found that their discrete spectrum is just a smooth deformation (in terms of the parameters $λ$ and $η$) of the oscillator and Coulomb spectrum, respectively. Moreover, it turns out that the maximal degeneracy of both systems is preserved under deformation. Finally, new further multiparametric generalizations of both systems that preserve their superintegrability are envisaged.

Existence of knotted vortex tubes in steady Euler flows

We prove the existence of knotted and linked thin vortex tubes for steady solutions to the incompressible Euler equation in R^3. More precisely, given a finite collection of (possibly linked and knotted) disjoint thin tubes in R^3, we show that they can be transformed with a C^m-small diffeomorphism into a set of vortex tubes of a Beltrami field that tends to zero at infinity. The structure of the vortex lines in the tubes is extremely rich, presenting a positive-measure set of invariant tori and infinitely many periodic vortex lines. The problem of the existence of steady knotted vortex tubes can be traced back to Lord Kelvin.

A maximally superintegrable deformation of the N-dimensional quantum Kepler-Coulomb system

The $N$-dimensional quantum Hamiltonian $ \hat{H} = -\frac{\hbar^2 {|\mathbf{q} } | }{2(η+| {\mathbf{q}} |)} {\mathbf{\nabla}}^2 - \frac{k}{η+ |{\mathbf{q}} |} $ is shown to be exactly solvable for any real positive value of the parameter $η$. Algebraically, this Hamiltonian system can be regarded as a new maximally superintegrable $η$-deformation of the $N$-dimensional Kepler-Coulomb Hamiltonian while, from a geometric viewpoint, this superintegrable Hamiltonian can be interpreted as a system on an $N$-dimensional Riemannian space with nonconstant curvature. The eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the model are explicitly obtained, and the spectrum presents a hydrogen-like shape for positive values of the deformation parameter $η$ and of the coupling constant $k$.

A singular initial-boundary value problem for nonlinear wave equations and holography in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spaces

We analyze the initial value problem for semilinear wave equations on asymptotically anti-de Sitter spaces using energy methods adapted to the geometry of the problem at infinity. The key feature is that the coefficients become strongly singular at infinity, which leads to considering nontrivial data on the conformal boundary of the manifold. This question arises in Physics as the holographic prescription problem in string theory.

Gradient dynamical systems on open surfaces and critical points of Green's functions

We study the dynamics of the vector field on an open surface given by the gradient of a Green's function. This dynamical approach enables us to show that this field induces an invariant decomposition of the surface as the union of a disk and a 1-skeleton that encodes the topology of the surface. We analyze the structure of this 1-skeleton, thereby obtaining, in particular, a topological upper bound for the number of critical points a Green's function can have. Connections between the dynamical properties of the gradient field and the conformal structure of the surface are also discussed.

Superintegrable quantum oscillator and Kepler-Coulomb systems on curved spaces

An overview of maximally superintegrable classical Hamitonians on spherically symmetric spaces is presented. It turns out that each of these systems can be considered either as an oscillator or as a Kepler-Coulomb Hamiltonian. We show that two possible quantization prescriptions for all these curved systems arise if we impose that superintegrability is preserved after quantization, and we prove that both possibilities are gauge equivalent.

Causality and the conformal boundary of AdS in real-time holography

We consider the holographic prescription problem in a (Lorentzian) AdS background, deriving from first principles the explicit formulas that relate the field at infinity with the field in the bulk. In contrast with the previous studies of the "real-time" holography problem, our derivation uses purely classical arguments that involve causality, as in the usual treatment of the holographic prescription problem in Wick-rotated spaces of Euclidean signature. We show that there is a unique propagator that preserves causality and see that this provides a simple picture of the relationship between the bulk manifold and its conformal boundary.

On the Scalar Spectrum of the Y^{p,q} Manifolds

The spectra of supergravity modes in anti de Sitter (AdS) space on a five-sphere endowed with the round metric (which is the simplest 5d Sasaki-Einstein space) has been studied in detail in the past. However for the more general class of cohomogeneity one Sasaki-Einstein metrics on S^2 x S^3, given by the Y^{p, q} class, a complete study of the spectra has not been attempted. Earlier studies on scalar spectrum were restricted to only the first few eigenstates. In this paper we take a step in this direction by analysing the full scalar spectrum on these spaces. However it turns out that finding the exact solution of the corresponding eigenvalue problem in closed form is not feasible since the computation of the eigenvalues of the Laplacian boils down to the analysis of a one-dimensional operator of Heun type, whose spectrum cannot be computed in closed form. However, despite this analytical obstacle, we manage to get both lower and upper bounds on the eigenvalues of the scalar spectrum by comparing the eigenvalue problem with a simpler, solvable system. We also briefly touch upon various other new avenues such as non-commutative and dipole deformations as well as possible non-conformal extensions of these models.

Submanifolds that are level sets of solutions to a second-order elliptic PDE

Motivated by a question of Rubel, we consider the problem of characterizing which noncompact hypersurfaces in $\RR^n$ can be regular level sets of a harmonic function modulo a $C^\infty$ diffeomorphism, as well as certain generalizations to other PDEs. We prove a versatile sufficient condition that shows, in particular, that any (possibly disconnected) algebraic noncompact hypersurface can be transformed onto a union of components of the zero set of a harmonic function via a diffeomorphism of $\RR^n$. The technique we use, which is a significant improvement of the basic strategy we recently applied to construct solutions to the Euler equation with knotted stream lines (Ann. of Math., in press), combines robust but not explicit local constructions with appropriate global approximation theorems. In view of applications to a problem of Berry and Dennis, intersections of level sets are also studied.

A new exactly solvable quantum model in N dimensions

An N-dimensional position-dependent mass Hamiltonian (depending on a parameter λ) formed by a curved kinetic term and an intrinsic oscillator potential is considered. It is shown that such a Hamiltonian is exactly solvable for any real positive value of the parameter λ. Algebraically, this Hamiltonian can be thought of as a new maximally superintegrable λ-deformation of the N-dimensional isotropic oscillator and, from a geometric viewpoint, this system is just the intrinsic oscillator potential on an N-dimensional hyperbolic space with nonconstant curvature. The spectrum of this model is shown to be hydrogenlike, and their eigenvalues and eigenfunctions are explicitly obtained by deforming appropriately the symmetry properties of the N-dimensional harmonic oscillator. A further generalization of this construction giving rise to new exactly solvable models is envisaged.

Quantum mechanics on spaces of nonconstant curvature: the oscillator problem and superintegrability

The full spectrum and eigenfunctions of the quantum version of a nonlinear oscillator defined on an N-dimensional space with nonconstant curvature are rigorously found. Since the underlying curved space generates a position-dependent kinetic energy, three different quantization prescriptions are worked out by imposing that the maximal superintegrability of the system has to be preserved after quantization. The relationships among these three Schroedinger problems are described in detail through appropriate similarity transformations. These three approaches are used to illustrate different features of the quantization problem on N-dimensional curved spaces or, alternatively, of position-dependent mass quantum Hamiltonians. This quantum oscillator is, to the best of our knowledge, the first example of a maximally superintegrable quantum system on an N-dimensional space with nonconstant curvature.

Superintegrable Oscillator and Kepler Systems on Spaces of Nonconstant Curvature via the Stäckel Transform

The Stäckel transform is applied to the geodesic motion on Euclidean space, through the harmonic oscillator and Kepler-Coloumb potentials, in order to obtain maximally superintegrable classical systems on N-dimensional Riemannian spaces of nonconstant curvature. By one hand, the harmonic oscillator potential leads to two families of superintegrable systems which are interpreted as an intrinsic Kepler-Coloumb system on a hyperbolic curved space and as the so-called Darboux III oscillator. On the other, the Kepler-Coloumb potential gives rise to an oscillator system on a spherical curved space as well as to the Taub-NUT oscillator. Their integrals of motion are explicitly given. The role of the (flat/curved) Fradkin tensor and Laplace-Runge-Lenz N-vector for all of these Hamiltonians is highlighted throughout the paper. The corresponding quantum maximally superintegrable systems are also presented.

Global causal propagator for the Klein-Gordon equation on a class of supersymmetric AdS backgrounds

We analyze the Cauchy problem for the Klein-Gordon equation on the type IIB supergravity backgrounds $AdS^5 \times Y^{p,q}$, where $Y^{p,q}$ is any of the Sasaki-Einstein 5-manifolds recently discovered by Gaunlett, Martelli, Sparks and Waldram (Adv. Theor. Math. Phys. 8 (2004) 711--734). Although these spaces are not globally hyperbolic, we prove that there exists a unique admissible propagator and derive an integral representation thereof using spectral-theoretic techniques.

New superintegrable models with position-dependent mass from Bertrand's Theorem on curved spaces

A generalized version of Bertrand's theorem on spherically symmetric curved spaces is presented. This result is based on the classification of (3+1)-dimensional (Lorentzian) Bertrand spacetimes, that gives rise to two families of Hamiltonian systems defined on certain 3-dimensional (Riemannian) spaces. These two systems are shown to be either the Kepler or the oscillator potentials on the corresponding Bertrand spaces, and both of them are maximally superintegrable. Afterwards, the relationship between such Bertrand Hamiltonians and position-dependent mass systems is explicitly established. These results are illustrated through the example of a superintegrable (nonlinear) oscillator on a Bertrand-Darboux space, whose quantization and physical features are also briefly addressed.

Nondegeneracy of the eigenvalues of the Hodge Laplacian for generic metrics on 3-manifolds

In this paper we analyze the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Hodge Laplacian for generic metrics on a closed 3-manifold $M$. In particular, we show that the nonzero eigenvalues are simple and the zero set of the eigenforms of degree 1 or 2 consists of isolated points for a residual set of $C^r$ metrics on $M$, for any integer $r\geq2$. The proof of this result hinges on a detailed study of the Beltrami (or rotational) operator on co-exact 1-forms.

On two superintegrable nonlinear oscillators in N dimensions

We consider the classical superintegrable Hamiltonian system given by $H=T+U={p^2}/{2(1+λq^2)}+{ω^2 q^2}/{2(1+λq^2)}$, where U is known to be the "intrinsic" oscillator potential on the Darboux spaces of nonconstant curvature determined by the kinetic energy term T and parametrized by λ. We show that H is Stackel equivalent to the free Euclidean motion, a fact that directly provides a curved Fradkin tensor of constants of motion for H. Furthermore, we analyze in terms of λ the three different underlying manifolds whose geodesic motion is provided by T. As a consequence, we find that H comprises three different nonlinear physical models that, by constructing their radial effective potentials, are shown to be two different nonlinear oscillators and an infinite barrier potential. The quantization of these two oscillators and its connection with spherical confinement models is briefly discussed.

Green's function for the Hodge Laplacian on some classes of Riemannian and Lorentzian symmetric spaces

We compute the Green's function for the Hodge Laplacian on the symmetric spaces M\timesΣ, where M is a simply connected n-dimensional Riemannian or Lorentzian manifold of constant curvature and Σis a simply connected Riemannian surface of constant curvature. Our approach is based on a generalization to the case of differential forms of the method of spherical means and on the use of Riesz distributions on manifolds. The radial part of the Green's function is governed by a fourth order analogue of the Heun equation.

Superintegrable potentials on 3D Riemannian and Lorentzian spaces with non-constant curvature

A quantum sl(2,R) coalgebra is shown to underly the construction of a large class of superintegrable potentials on 3D curved spaces, that include the non-constant curvature analogues of the spherical, hyperbolic and (anti-)de Sitter spaces. The connection and curvature tensors for these "deformed" spaces are fully studied by working on two different phase spaces. The former directly comes from a 3D symplectic realization of the deformed coalgebra, while the latter is obtained through a map leading to a spherical-type phase space. In this framework, the non-deformed limit is identified with the flat contraction leading to the Euclidean and Minkowskian spaces/potentials. The resulting Hamiltonians always admit, at least, three functionally independent constants of motion coming from the coalgebra structure. Furthermore, the intrinsic oscillator and Kepler potentials on such Riemannian and Lorentzian spaces of non-constant curvature are identified, and several examples of them are explicitly presented.
