A journey with the integrated $γ$2 criterion and its weak forms

As the title indicates this paper will describe several extensions and applications of the $Γ$2 integrated criterion introduced by M. Ledoux following ideas of B. Hellffer. We introduce general weak versions and show that they are equivalent to the weak Poincar{é} inequalities introduced by M. R{ö}ckner and F. Y. Wang. We also discuss special weak versions appropriate to the study of log-concave measures and log-concave perturbations of product measures.

On systems of particles in singular repulsive interaction in dimension one : log and Riesz gas

In this article, we prove the first quantitative uniform in time propagation of chaos for a class of systems of particles in singular repulsive interaction in dimension one that contains the Dyson Brownian motion. We start by establishing existence and uniqueness for the Riesz gases, before proving propagation of chaos with an original approach to the problem, namely coupling with a Cauchy sequence type argument. We also give a general argument to turn a result of weak propagation of chaos into a strong and uniform in time result using the long time behavior and some bounds on moments, in particular enabling us to get a uniform in time version of the result of Cépa-Lépingle.

Functional inequalities for perturbed measures with applications to log-concave measures and to some Bayesian problems

We study functional inequalities (Poincaré, Cheeger, log-Sobolev) for probability measures obtained as perturbations. Several explicit results for general measures as well as log-concave distributions are given. The initial goal of this work was to obtain explicit bounds on the constants in view of statistical applications for instance. These results are then applied to the Langevin Monte-Carlo method used in statistics in order to compute Bayesian estimators.

Self-improvement of the Bakry-Emery criterion for Poincar{é} inequalities and Wasserstein contraction using variable curvature bounds

We study Poincar{é} inequalities and long-time behavior for diffusion processes on R^n under a variable curvature lower bound, in the sense of Bakry-Emery. We derive various estimates on the rate of convergence to equilibrium in L^1 optimal transport distance, as well as bounds on the constant in the Poincar{é} inequality in several situations of interest, including some where curvature may be negative. In particular, we prove a self-improvement of the Bakry-Emery estimate for Poincar{é} inequalities when curvature is positive but not constant.

Particles Systems and Numerical Schemes for Mean Reflected Stochastic Differential Equations

This paper is devoted to the study of reflected Stochastic Differential Equations when the constraint is not on the paths of the solution but acts on the law of the solution. These reflected equations have been introduced recently by Briand, Elie and Hu (arXiv:1605.06301) in the context of risk measures. Our main objective is to provide an approximation of solutions to these reflected SDEs with the help of interacting particles systems. This approximation allows to design a numerical scheme for this kind of equations.

Hitting times, functional inequalities, lyapunov conditions and uniform ergodicity

The use of Lyapunov conditions for proving functional inequalities was initiated in [5]. It was shown in [4, 30] that there is an equivalence between a Poincar{é} inequality, the existence of some Lyapunov function and the exponential integrability of hitting times. In the present paper, we close the scheme of the interplay between Lyapunov conditions and functional inequalities by $\bullet$ showing that strong functional inequalities are equivalent to Lyapunov type conditions; $\bullet$ showing that these Lyapunov conditions are characterized by the finiteness of generalized exponential moments of hitting times. We also give some complement concerning the link between Lyapunov conditions and in-tegrability property of the invariant probability measure and as such transportation inequalities , and we show that some "unbounded Lyapunov conditions" can lead to uniform ergodicity, and coming down from infinity property.

Equivalence between dimensional contractions in Wasserstein distance and the curvature-dimension condition

The curvature-dimension condition is a generalization of the Bochner inequality to weighted Riemannian manifolds and general metric measure spaces. It is now known to be equivalent to evolution variational inequalities for the heat semigroup, and quadratic Wasserstein distance contraction properties at different times. On the other hand, in a compact Riemannian manifold, it implies a same-time Wasserstein contraction property for this semigroup. In this work we generalize the latter result to metric measure spaces and more importantly prove the converse: contraction inequalities are equivalent to curvature-dimension conditions. Links with functional inequalities are also investigated.

From a Kac-like particle system to the Landau equation for hard potentials and Maxwell molecules

We prove a quantitative result of convergence of a conservative stochastic particle system to the solution of the homogeneous Landau equation for hard potentials. There are two main difficulties: (i) the known stability results for this class of Landau equations concern regular solutions and seem difficult to extend to study the rate of convergence of some empirical measures; (ii) the conservativeness of the particle system is an obstacle for (approximate) independence. To overcome (i), we prove a new stability result for the Landau equation for hard potentials concerning very general measure solutions. Due to (ii), we have to couple, our particle system with some non independent nonlinear processes, of which the law solves, in some sense, the Landau equation. We then prove that these nonlinear processes are not so far from being independent. Using finally some ideas of Rousset [25], we show that in the case of Maxwell molecules, the convergence of the particle system is uniform in time.

Transportation cost-information and concentration inequalities for bifurcating Markov chains

We investigate the transportation cost-information inequalities for bifurcating Markov chains which are a class of processes indexed by binary tree. These processes provide models for cell growth when each individual in one generation gives birth to two offsprings in the next one. Transportation cost inequalities provide useful concentra-tion inequalities. We also study deviation inequalities for the empiri-cal means under relaxed assumptions on the Wasserstein contraction of the Markov kernels. Applications to bifurcating non linear autore-gressive processes are considered: deviation inequalities for pointwise estimates of the non linear leading functions.

Deviation inequalities, Moderate deviations and some limit theorems for bifurcating Markov chains with application

First, under a geometric ergodicity assumption, we provide some limit theorems and some probability inequalities for the bifurcating Markov chains (BMC). The BMC model was introduced by Guyon to detect cellular aging from cell lineage, and our aim is thus to complete his asymptotic results. The deviation inequalities are then applied to derive first result on the moderate deviation principle (MDP) for a functional of the BMC with a restricted range of speed, but with a function which can be unbounded. Next, under a uniform geometric ergodicity assumption, we provide deviation inequalities for the BMC and apply them to derive a second result on the MDP for a bounded functional of the BMC with a larger range of speed. As statistical applications, we provide superexponential convergence in probability and deviation inequalities (for either the Gaussian setting or the bounded setting), and the MDP for least square estimators of the parameters of a first-order bifurcating autoregressive process.

Large deviations of the realized (co-)volatility vector

Realized statistics based on high frequency returns have become very popular in financial economics. In recent years, different non-parametric estimators of the variation of a log-price process have appeared. These were developed by many authors and were motivated by the existence of complete records of price data. Among them are the realized quadratic (co-)variation which is perhaps the most well known example, providing a consistent estimator of the integrated (co-)volatility when the logarithmic price process is continuous. Limit results such as the weak law of large numbers or the central limit theorem have been proved in different contexts. In this paper, we propose to study the large deviation properties of realized (co-)volatility (i.e., when the number of high frequency observations in a fixed time interval increases to infinity. More specifically, we consider a bivariate model with synchronous observation schemes and correlated Brownian motions of the following form: $dX\_{\ell,t} = σ\_{\ell,t}dB\_{\ell,t}+b\_{\ell}(t,ω)dt$ for $\ell=1,2$, where $X\_{\ell}$ denotes the log-price, we are concerned with the large deviation estimation of the vector $V\_t^n(X)=(Q\_{1,t}^n(X), Q\_{2,t}^n(X), C\_{t}^n(X))$ where $Q\_{\ell,t}^n(X)$ and $C\_{t}^n(X)$ represente the estimator of the quadratic variational processes $Q\_{\ell,t}=\int\_0^tσ\_{\ell,s}^2ds$ and the integrated covariance $C\_t=\int\_0^tσ\_{1,s}σ\_{2,s}ρ\_sds$ respectively, with $ρ\_t=cov(B\_{1,t}, B\_{2,t})$. Our main motivation is to improve upon the existing limit theorems. Our large deviations results can be used to evaluate and approximate tail probabilities of realized (co-)volatility. As an application we provide the large deviation for the standard dependence measures between the two assets returns such as the realized regression coefficients up to time $t$, or the realized correlation. Our study should contribute to the recent trend of research on the (co-)variance estimation problems, which are quite often discussed in high-frequency financial data analysis.

Non ultracontractive heat kernel bounds by Lyapunov conditions

Nash and Sobolev inequalities are known to be equivalent to ultracontractive properties of heat-like Markov semigroups, hence to uniform on-diagonal bounds on their kernel densities. In non ultracontractive settings, such bounds can not hold, and (necessarily weaker, non uniform) bounds on the semigroups can be derived by means of weighted Nash (or super-Poincaré) inequalities. The purpose of this note is to show how to check these weighted Nash inequalities in concrete examples, in a very simple and general manner. We also deduce off-diagonal bounds for the Markov kernels of the semigroups, refining E. B. Davies' original argument.

Ornstein-Uhlenbeck pinball: I. Poincaré inequalities in a punctured domain

In this paper we study the Poincaré constant for the Gaussian measure restricted to $D=\R^d - B(y,r)$ where $B(y,r)$ denotes the Euclidean ball with center $y$ and radius $r$, and $d\geq 2$. We also study the case of the $l^\infty$ ball (the hypercube). This is the first step in the study of the asymptotic behavior of a $d$-dimensional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process in the presence of obstacles with elastic normal reflections (the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck pinball) we shall study in a companion paper.

Semi Log-Concave Markov Diffusions

In this paper we intend to give a comprehensive approach of functional inequalities for diffusion processes under some "curvature" assumptions. Our notion of curvature coincides with the usual $Γ_2$ curvature of Bakry and Emery in the case of a (reversible) drifted Brownian motion, but differs for more general diffusion processes. Our approach using simple coupling arguments together with classical stochastic tools, allows us to obtain new results, to recover and to extend already known results, giving in many situations explicit (though non optimal) bounds. In particular, we show new results for gradient/semigroup commutation in the log concave case. Some new convergence to equilibrium in the granular media equation is also exhibited.

Degenerate Fokker-Planck Equations : Bismut Formula, Gradient Estimate and Harnack Inequality

By constructing successful couplings for degenerate diffusion processes, explicit derivative formula and Harnack type inequalities are presented for solutions to a class of degenerate Fokker-Planck equations on $\R^m\times\R^{d}$. The main results are also applied to the study of gradient estimate, entropy/transportation-cost inequality and heat kernel inequalities.

Measure concentration through non-Lipschitz observables and functional inequalities

Non-Gaussian concentration estimates are obtained for invariant probability measures of reversible Markov processes. We show that the functional inequalities approach combined with a suitable Lyapunov condition allows us to circumvent the classical Lipschitz assumption of the observables. Our method is general and covers diffusions as well as pure-jump Markov processes on unbounded spaces.

Total variation estimates for the TCP process

The TCP window size process appears in the modeling of the famous Transmission Control Protocol used for data transmission over the Internet. This continuous time Markov process takes its values in [0, \infty), is ergodic and irreversible. The sample paths are piecewise linear deterministic and the whole randomness of the dynamics comes from the jump mechanism. The aim of the present paper is to provide quantitative estimates for the exponential convergence to equilibrium, in terms of the total variation and Wasserstein distances.

Uniform convergence to equilibrium for granular media

We study the long time asymptotics of a nonlinear, nonlocal equation used in the modelling of granular media. We prove a uniform exponential convergence to equilibrium for degenerately convex and non convex interaction or confinement potentials, improving in particular results by J. A. Carrillo, R. J. McCann and C. Villani. The method is based on studying the dissipation of the Wasserstein distance between a solution and the steady state.

Central limit theorems for additive functionals of ergodic Markov diffusions processes

We revisit functional central limit theorems for additive functionals of ergodic Markov diffusion processes. Translated in the language of partial differential equations of evolution, they appear as diffusion limits in the asymptotic analysis of Fokker-Planck type equations. We focus on the square integrable framework, and we provide tractable conditions on the infinitesimal generator, including degenerate or anomalously slow diffusions. We take advantage on recent developments in the study of the trend to the equilibrium of ergodic diffusions. We discuss examples and formulate open problems.

Fast change point analysis on the Hurst index of piecewise fractional Brownian motion

In this presentation, we introduce a new method for change point analysis on the Hurst index for a piecewise fractional Brownian motion. We first set the model and the statistical problem. The proposed method is a transposition of the FDpV (Filtered Derivative with p-value) method introduced for the detection of change points on the mean in Bertrand et al. (2011) to the case of changes on the Hurst index. The underlying statistics of the FDpV technology is a new statistic estimator for Hurst index, so-called Increment Bernoulli Statistic (IBS). Both FDpV and IBS are methods with linear time and memory complexity, with respect to the size of the series. Thus the resulting method for change point analysis on Hurst index reaches also a linear complexity.

Off-line detection of multiple change points with the Filtered Derivative with p-Value method

This paper deals with off-line detection of change points for time series of independent observations, when the number of change points is unknown. We propose a sequential analysis like method with linear time and memory complexity. Our method is based at first step, on Filtered Derivative method which detects the right change points but also false ones. We improve Filtered Derivative method by adding a second step in which we compute the p-values associated to each potential change points. Then we eliminate as false alarms the points which have p-value smaller than a given critical level. Next, our method is compared with the Penalized Least Square Criterion procedure on simulated data sets. Eventually, we apply Filtered Derivative with p-Value method to segmentation of heartbeat time series, and detection of change points in the average daily volume of financial time series.

Bernstein type's concentration inequalities for symmetric Markov processes

Using the method of transportation-information inequality introduced in \cite{GLWY}, we establish Bernstein type's concentration inequalities for empirical means $\frac 1t \int_0^t g(X_s)ds$ where $g$ is a unbounded observable of the symmetric Markov process $(X_t)$. Three approaches are proposed : functional inequalities approach ; Lyapunov function method ; and an approach through the Lipschitzian norm of the solution to the Poisson equation. Several applications and examples are studied.

Local estimation of the Hurst index of multifractional Brownian motion by Increment Ratio Statistic method

We investigate here the Central Limit Theorem of the Increment Ratio Statistic of a multifractional Brownian motion, leading to a CLT for the time varying Hurst index. The proofs are quite simple relying on Breuer-Major theorems and an original freezing of time strategy. A simulation study shows the goodness of fit of this estimator.

Poincaré inequalities and hitting times

Equivalence of the spectral gap, exponential integrability of hitting times and Lyapunov conditions are well known. We give here the correspondance (with quantitative results) for reversible diffusion processes. As a consequence, we generalize results of Bobkov in the one dimensional case on the value of the Poincaré constant for logconcave measures to superlinear potentials. Finally, we study various functional inequalities under different hitting times integrability conditions (polynomial, ...). In particular, in the one dimensional case, ultracontractivity is equivalent to a bounded Lyapunov condition.

Trend to equilibrium and particle approximation for a weakly selfconsistent Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equation

We consider a Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equation governing the evolution of the density of interacting and diffusive matter in the space of positions and velocities. We use a probabilistic interpretation to obtain convergence towards equilibrium in Wasserstein distance with an explicit exponential rate. We also prove a propagation of chaos property for an associated particle system, and give rates on the approximation of the solution by the particle system. Finally, a transportation inequality for the distribution of the particle system leads to quantitative deviation bounds on the approximation of the equilibrium solution of the equation by an empirical mean of the particles at given time.

Functional inequalities for heavy tails distributions and application to isoperimetry

This paper is devoted to the study of probability measures with heavy tails. Using the Lyapunov function approach we prove that such measures satisfy different kind of functional inequalities such as weak Poincaré and weak Cheeger, weighted Poincaré and weighted Cheeger inequalities and their dual forms. Proofs are short and we cover very large situations. For product measures on $\R^n$ we obtain the optimal dimension dependence using the mass transportation method. Then we derive (optimal) isoperimetric inequalities. Finally we deal with spherically symmetric measures. We recover and improve many previous results.

Lyapunov conditions for logarithmic Sobolev and Super Poincaré inequality

We show how to use Lyapunov functions to obtain functional inequalities which are stronger than Poincaré inequality (for instance logarithmic Sobolev or $F$-Sobolev). The case of Poincaré and weak Poincaré inequalities was studied in Bakry and al. This approach allows us to recover and extend in an unified way some known criteria in the euclidean case (Bakry-Emery, Wang, Kusuoka-Stroock ...).

Transportation-information inequalities for Markov processes

In this paper, one investigates the following type of transportation-information $T_cI$ inequalities: $α(T_c(ν,μ))\le I(ν|μ)$ for all probability measures $ν$ on some metric space $(\XX, d)$, where $μ$ is a given probability measure, $T_c(ν,μ)$ is the transportation cost from $ν$ to $μ$ with respect to some cost function $c(x,y)$ on $\XX^2$, $I(ν|μ)$ is the Fisher-Donsker-Varadhan information of $ν$ with respect to $μ$ and $α: [0,\infty)\to [0,\infty]$ is some left continuous increasing function. Using large deviation techniques, it is shown that $T_cI$ is equivalent to some concentration inequality for the occupation measure of a $μ$-reversible ergodic Markov process related to $I(\cdot|μ)$, a counterpart of the characterizations of transportation-entropy inequalities, recently obtained by Gozlan and Léonard in the i.i.d. case . Tensorization properties of $T_cI$ are also derived.

Quantitative concentration inequalities for empirical measures on non-compact spaces

We establish some quantitative concentration estimates for the empirical measure of many independent variables, in transportation distances. As an application, we provide some error bounds for particle simulations in a model mean field problem. The tools include coupling arguments, as well as regularity and moments estimates for solutions of certain diffusive partial differential equations.

Modified logarithmic Sobolev inequalities and transportation inequalities

We present a class of modified logarithmic Sobolev inequality, interpolating between Poincaré and logarithmic Sobolev inequalities, suitable for measures of the type $\exp(-|x|^\al)$ or more complex $\exp(-|x|^\al\log^β(2+|x|))$ ($\al\in]1,2[$ and $\be\in\dR$) which lead to new concentration inequalities. These modified inequalities share common properties with usual logarithmic Sobolev inequalities, as tensorisation or perturbation, and imply as well Poincaré inequality. We also study the link between these new modified logarithmic Sobolev inequalities and transportation inequalities.
