Stability estimates for the sharp spectral gap bound under a curvature-dimension condition

We study stability of the sharp spectral gap bounds for metric-measure spaces satisfying a curvature bound. Our main result, new even in the smooth setting, is a sharp quantitative estimate showing that if the spectral gap of an RCD$(N-1, N)$ space is almost minimal, then the pushforward of the measure by an eigenfunction associated with the spectral gap is close to a Beta distribution. The proof combines estimates on the eigenfunction obtained via a new $L^1$-functional inequality for RCD spaces with Stein's method for distribution approximation. We also derive analogous, almost sharp, estimates for infinite and negative values of the dimension parameter.

Time reversal of diffusion processes under a finite entropy condition

Motivated by entropic optimal transport, time reversal of diffusion processes is revisited. An integration by parts formula is derived for the carré du champ of a Markov process in an abstract space. It leads to a time reversal formula for a wide class of diffusion processes in $ \mathbb{R}^n$ possibly with singular drifts, extending the already known results in this domain. The proof of the integration by parts formula relies on stochastic derivatives. Then, this formula is applied to compute the semimartingale characteristics of the time-reversed $P^*$ of a diffusion measure $P$ provided that the relative entropy of $P$ with respect to another diffusion measure $R$ is finite, and the semimartingale characteristics of the time-reversed $R^*$ are known (for instance when the reference path measure $R$ is reversible). As an illustration of the robustness of this method, the integration by parts formula is also employed to derive a time-reversal formula for a random walk on a graph.

Sobolev's inequality under a curvature-dimension condition

In this note we present a new proof of Sobolev's inequality under a uniform lower bound of the Ricci curvature. This result was initially obtained in 1983 by Ilias. Our goal is to present a very short proof, to give a review of the famous inequality and to explain how our method, relying on a gradient-flow interpretation, is simple and robust. In particular, we elucidate computations used in numerous previous works, starting with Bidaut-V{é}ron and V{é}ron's 1991 classical work.

About the analogy between optimal transport and minimal entropy

We describe some analogy between optimal transport and the Schrödinger problem where the transport cost is replaced by an entropic cost with a reference path measure. A dual Kantorovich type formulation and a Benamou-Brenier type representation formula of the entropic cost are derived, as well as contraction inequalities with respect to the entropic cost. This analogy is also illustrated with some numerical examples where the reference path measure is given by the Brownian or the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. Our point of view is measure theoretical and the relative entropy with respect to path measures plays a prominent role.

The Li-Yau inequality and applications under a curvature-dimension condition

We prove a global Li-Yau inequality for a general Markov semigroup under a curvature-dimension condition. This inequality is stronger than all classical Li-Yau type inequalities known to us. On a Riemannian manifold, it is equivalent to a new parabolic Harnack inequality, both in negative and positive curvature, giving new subsequents bounds on the heat kernel of the semigroup. Under positive curvature we moreover reach ultracontractive bounds by a direct and robust method.

Equivalence between dimensional contractions in Wasserstein distance and the curvature-dimension condition

The curvature-dimension condition is a generalization of the Bochner inequality to weighted Riemannian manifolds and general metric measure spaces. It is now known to be equivalent to evolution variational inequalities for the heat semigroup, and quadratic Wasserstein distance contraction properties at different times. On the other hand, in a compact Riemannian manifold, it implies a same-time Wasserstein contraction property for this semigroup. In this work we generalize the latter result to metric measure spaces and more importantly prove the converse: contraction inequalities are equivalent to curvature-dimension conditions. Links with functional inequalities are also investigated.

Dimensional contraction in Wasserstein distance for diffusion semigroups on a Riemannian manifold

We prove a refined contraction inequality for diffusion semigroups with respect to the Wasserstein distance on a compact Riemannian manifold taking account of the dimension. The result generalizes in a Riemannian context, the dimensional contraction established in [BGG13] for the Euclidean heat equation. It is proved by using a dimensional coercive estimate for the Hodge-de Rham semigroup on 1-forms.

On Harnack inequalities and optimal transportation

We develop connections between Harnack inequalities for the heat flow of diffusion operators with curvature bounded from below and optimal transportation. Through heat kernel inequalities, a new isoperimetric-type Harnack inequality is emphasized. Commutation properties between the heat and Hopf-Lax semigroups are developed consequently, providing direct access to the heat flow contraction property along Wasserstein distances.

Super-Poincaré and Nash-type inequalities for Subordinated Semigroups

We prove that if a super-Poincaré inequality is satisfied by an infinitesimal generator $-A$ of a symmetric contracting semigroup then it implies a corresponding super-Poincaré inequality for $-g(A)$ with any Bernstein function $g$. We also study the converse statement. We deduce similar results for the Nash-type inequality. Our results applied to fractional powers of $A$ and to $\log(I+A)$ and thus generalize some results of Biroli and Maheux, and Wang 2007. We provide several examples.

Uniform convergence to equilibrium for granular media

We study the long time asymptotics of a nonlinear, nonlocal equation used in the modelling of granular media. We prove a uniform exponential convergence to equilibrium for degenerately convex and non convex interaction or confinement potentials, improving in particular results by J. A. Carrillo, R. J. McCann and C. Villani. The method is based on studying the dissipation of the Wasserstein distance between a solution and the steady state.

Dimension dependent hypercontractivity for Gaussian kernels

We derive sharp, local and dimension dependent hypercontractive bounds on the Markov kernel of a large class of diffusion semigroups. Unlike the dimension free ones, they capture refined properties of Markov kernels, such as trace estimates. They imply classical bounds on the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup and a dimensional and refined (transportation) Talagrand inequality when applied to the Hamilton-Jacobi equation. Hypercontractive bounds on the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup driven by a non-diffusive Lévy semigroup are also investigated. Curvature-dimension criteria are the main tool in the analysis.

Phi-entropy inequalities for diffusion semigroups

We obtain and study new $Φ$-entropy inequalities for diffusion semigroups, with Poincaré or logarithmic Sobolev inequalities as particular cases. From this study we derive the asymptotic behaviour of a large class of linear Fokker-Plank type equations under simple conditions, widely extending previous results. Nonlinear diffusion equations are also studied by means of these inequalities. The $Γ_2$ criterion of D. Bakry and M. Emery appears as a main tool in the analysis, in local or integral forms.

Weighted Nash Inequalities

Nash or Sobolev inequalities are known to be equivalent to ultracontractive properties of Markov semigroups, hence to uniform bounds on their kernel densities. In this work we present a simple and extremely general method, based on weighted Nash inequalities, to obtain non-uniform bounds on the kernel densities. Such bounds imply a control on the trace or the Hilbert-Schmidt norm of the heat kernels. We illustrate the method on the heat kernel on $\dR$ naturally associated with the measure with density $C_a\exp(-|x|^a)$, with $1

Logarithmic Sobolev inequalities: regularizing effect of Lévy operators and asymptotic convergence in the Lévy-Fokker-Planck equation

In this paper we study some applications of the Lévy logarithmic Sobolev inequality to the study of the regularity of the solution of the fractal heat equation, i. e. the heat equation where the Laplacian is replaced with the fractional Laplacian. It is also used to the study of the asymptotic behaviour of the Lévy-Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process.

Modified logarithmic Sobolev inequalities and transportation inequalities

We present a class of modified logarithmic Sobolev inequality, interpolating between Poincaré and logarithmic Sobolev inequalities, suitable for measures of the type $\exp(-|x|^\al)$ or more complex $\exp(-|x|^\al\log^β(2+|x|))$ ($\al\in]1,2[$ and $\be\in\dR$) which lead to new concentration inequalities. These modified inequalities share common properties with usual logarithmic Sobolev inequalities, as tensorisation or perturbation, and imply as well Poincaré inequality. We also study the link between these new modified logarithmic Sobolev inequalities and transportation inequalities.
