The Li-Yau inequality and applications under a curvature-dimension condition

We prove a global Li-Yau inequality for a general Markov semigroup under a curvature-dimension condition. This inequality is stronger than all classical Li-Yau type inequalities known to us. On a Riemannian manifold, it is equivalent to a new parabolic Harnack inequality, both in negative and positive curvature, giving new subsequents bounds on the heat kernel of the semigroup. Under positive curvature we moreover reach ultracontractive bounds by a direct and robust method.

Equivalence between dimensional contractions in Wasserstein distance and the curvature-dimension condition

The curvature-dimension condition is a generalization of the Bochner inequality to weighted Riemannian manifolds and general metric measure spaces. It is now known to be equivalent to evolution variational inequalities for the heat semigroup, and quadratic Wasserstein distance contraction properties at different times. On the other hand, in a compact Riemannian manifold, it implies a same-time Wasserstein contraction property for this semigroup. In this work we generalize the latter result to metric measure spaces and more importantly prove the converse: contraction inequalities are equivalent to curvature-dimension conditions. Links with functional inequalities are also investigated.

Non ultracontractive heat kernel bounds by Lyapunov conditions

Nash and Sobolev inequalities are known to be equivalent to ultracontractive properties of heat-like Markov semigroups, hence to uniform on-diagonal bounds on their kernel densities. In non ultracontractive settings, such bounds can not hold, and (necessarily weaker, non uniform) bounds on the semigroups can be derived by means of weighted Nash (or super-Poincaré) inequalities. The purpose of this note is to show how to check these weighted Nash inequalities in concrete examples, in a very simple and general manner. We also deduce off-diagonal bounds for the Markov kernels of the semigroups, refining E. B. Davies' original argument.

Nonlinear diffusion: Geodesic Convexity is equivalent to Wasserstein Contraction

It is well known that nonlinear diffusion equations can be interpreted as a gradient flow in the space of probability measures equipped with the Euclidean Wasserstein distance. Under suitable convexity conditions on the nonlinearity, due to R. J. McCann, the associated entropy is geodesically convex, which implies a contraction type property between all solutions with respect to this distance. In this note, we give a simple straightforward proof of the equivalence between this contraction type property and this convexity condition, without even resorting to the entropy and the gradient flow structure.

Uniform convergence to equilibrium for granular media

We study the long time asymptotics of a nonlinear, nonlocal equation used in the modelling of granular media. We prove a uniform exponential convergence to equilibrium for degenerately convex and non convex interaction or confinement potentials, improving in particular results by J. A. Carrillo, R. J. McCann and C. Villani. The method is based on studying the dissipation of the Wasserstein distance between a solution and the steady state.

Mean-field limit for the stochastic Vicsek model

We consider the continuous version of the Vicsek model with noise, proposed as a model for collective behavior of individuals with a fixed speed. We rigorously derive the kinetic mean-field partial differential equation satisfied when the number N of particles tends to infinity, quantifying the convergence of the law of one particle to the solution of the PDE. For this we adapt a classical coupling argument to the present case in which both the particle system and the PDE are defined on a surface rather than on the whole space. As part of the study we give existence and uniqueness results for both the particle system and the PDE.

Dimension dependent hypercontractivity for Gaussian kernels

We derive sharp, local and dimension dependent hypercontractive bounds on the Markov kernel of a large class of diffusion semigroups. Unlike the dimension free ones, they capture refined properties of Markov kernels, such as trace estimates. They imply classical bounds on the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup and a dimensional and refined (transportation) Talagrand inequality when applied to the Hamilton-Jacobi equation. Hypercontractive bounds on the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup driven by a non-diffusive Lévy semigroup are also investigated. Curvature-dimension criteria are the main tool in the analysis.

Phi-entropy inequalities for diffusion semigroups

We obtain and study new $Φ$-entropy inequalities for diffusion semigroups, with Poincaré or logarithmic Sobolev inequalities as particular cases. From this study we derive the asymptotic behaviour of a large class of linear Fokker-Plank type equations under simple conditions, widely extending previous results. Nonlinear diffusion equations are also studied by means of these inequalities. The $Γ_2$ criterion of D. Bakry and M. Emery appears as a main tool in the analysis, in local or integral forms.

Stochastic Mean-Field Limit: Non-Lipschitz Forces \& Swarming

We consider general stochastic systems of interacting particles with noise which are relevant as models for the collective behavior of animals, and rigorously prove that in the mean-field limit the system is close to the solution of a kinetic PDE. Our aim is to include models widely studied in the literature such as the Cucker-Smale model, adding noise to the behavior of individuals. The difficulty, as compared to the classical case of globally Lipschitz potentials, is that in several models the interaction potential between particles is only locally Lipschitz, the local Lipschitz constant growing to infinity with the size of the region considered. With this in mind, we present an extension of the classical theory for globally Lipschitz interactions, which works for only locally Lipschitz ones.

Weighted Nash Inequalities

Nash or Sobolev inequalities are known to be equivalent to ultracontractive properties of Markov semigroups, hence to uniform bounds on their kernel densities. In this work we present a simple and extremely general method, based on weighted Nash inequalities, to obtain non-uniform bounds on the kernel densities. Such bounds imply a control on the trace or the Hilbert-Schmidt norm of the heat kernels. We illustrate the method on the heat kernel on $\dR$ naturally associated with the measure with density $C_a\exp(-|x|^a)$, with $1

Concentration inequalities on product spaces with applications to Markov processes

For a stochastic process with state space some Polish space, this paper gives sufficient conditions on the initial and conditional distributions for the joint law to satisfy Gaussian concentration inequalities, transportation inequalities and also logarithmic Sobolev inequalities in the case of the Euclidean space. In several cases, the obtained constants are of optimal order of growth with respect to the number of variables, or are independent of this number. These results extend results known for mutually independent variables to weakly dependent variables under Dobrushin-Shlosman type conditions.

Quantitative concentration inequalities on sample path space for mean field interaction

We consider a system of particles experiencing diffusion and mean field interaction, and study its behaviour when the number of particles goes to infinity. We derive non-asymptotic large deviation bounds measuring the concentration of the empirical measure of the paths of the particles around its limit. The method is based on a coupling argument, strong integrability estimates on the paths in Holder norm, and some general concentration result for the empirical measure of identically distributed independent paths.
