On Kigami's conjecture of the embedding $\mathcal{W}^p(K)\subset C(K)$

Let $(K,d)$ be a connected compact metric space and $p\in (1, \infty)$. Under the assumption of \cite[Assumption 2.15]{Ki2} and the conductive $p$-homogeneity, we show that $\mathcal{W}^p(K)\subset C(K)$ holds if and only if $p>\operatorname{dim}_{AR}(K,d)$, where $\mathcal{W}^p(K)$ is Kigami's $(1,p)$-Sobolev space and $\operatorname{dim}_{AR}(K,d)$ is the Ahlfors regular dimension.

Heat kernels for reflected diffusions with jumps on inner uniform domains

In this paper, we study sharp two-sided heat kernel estimates for a large class of symmetric reflected diffusions with jumps on the closure of an inner uniform domain $D$ in a length metric space. The length metric is the intrinsic metric of a strongly local Dirichlet form. When $D$ is an inner uniform domain in the Euclidean space, a prototype for a special case of the processes under consideration are symmetric reflected diffusions with jumps on $D$, whose infinitesimal generators are non-local (pseudo-differential) operators $L$ on $D$ of the form $$ L u(x) =\frac12 \sum_{i, j=1}^d \frac{\partial}{\partial x_i} \left(a_{ij}(x) \frac{\partial u(x)}{\partial x_j}\right) + \lim_{\eps \downarrow 0} \int_{\{y\in D: \, ρ_D(y, x)>\eps\}} (u(y)-u(x)) J(x, y)\, dy $$ satisfying "Neumann boundary condition". Here, $ρ_D(x,y)$ is the length metric on $D$, $A(x)=(a_{ij}(x))_{1\leq i,j\leq d}$ is a measurable $d\times d$ matrix-valued function on $D$ that is uniformly elliptic and bounded, and $$ J(x,y):= \frac{1}{Φ(ρ_D(x,y))} \int_{[α_1, α_2]} \frac{c(α, x,y)} {ρ_D(x,y)^{d+α}} \,ν(dα) , $$ where $ν$ is a finite measure on $[α_1, α_2] \subset (0, 2)$, $Φ$ is an increasing function on $[ 0, \infty )$ with $c_1e^{c_2r^β} \le Φ(r) \le c_3 e^{c_4r^β}$ for some $β\in [0,\infty]$, and $c(α, x, y)$ is a jointly measurable function that is bounded between two positive constants and is symmetric in $(x, y)$.

Solvability of parabolic Anderson equation with fractional Gaussian noise

This paper provides necessary as well as sufficient conditions on the Hurst parameters so that the continuous time parabolic Anderson model $\frac{\partial u}{\partial t}=\frac{1}{2}\frac{\partial^2 u}{\partial x^2}+u\dot{W}$ on $[0, \infty)\times {\bf R}^d $ with $d\geq 1$ has a unique random field solution, where $W(t, x)$ is a fractional Brownian sheet on $[0, \infty)\times {\bf R}^d$ and formally $\dot W =\frac{\partial^{d+1}}{\partial t \partial x_1 \cdots \partial x_d} W(t, x)$. When the noise $W(t, x)$ is white in time, our condition is both necessary and sufficient when the initial data $u(0, x)$ is bounded between two positive constants. When the noise is fractional in time with Hurst parameter $H_0>1/2$, our sufficient condition, which improves the known results in literature, is different from the necessary one.

Hölder regularity and gradient estimates Hölder regularity and gradient estimates for SDEs driven by cylindrical $α$-stable processes

We establish Hölder regularity and gradient estimates for the transition semigroup of the solutions to the following SDE: $$ {\rm d} X_t=σ(t, X_{t-}){\rm d} Z_t+b (t, X_t){\rm d} t,\ \ X_0=x\in{\mathbb R}^d, $$ where $( Z_t)_{t\geq 0}$ is a $d$-dimensional cylindrical $α$-stable process with $α\in (0, 2)$, $σ(t, x):{\mathbb R}_+\times{\mathbb R}^d\to{\mathbb R}^d\otimes{\mathbb R}^d$ is bounded measurable, uniformly nondegenerate and Lipschitz continuous in $x$ uniformly in $t$, and $b (t, x):{\mathbb R}_+\times{\mathbb R}^d\to{\mathbb R}^d$ is bounded $β$-Hölder continuous in $x$ uniformly in $t$ with $β\in[0,1]$ satisfying $α+β>1$. Moreover, we also show the existence and regularity of the distributional density of $X (t, x)$. Our proof is based on Littlewood-Paley's theory.

Homogenization of symmetric stable-like processes in stationary ergodic medium

This paper studies homogenization of symmetric non-local Dirichlet forms with $α$-stable-like jumping kernels in one-parameter stationary ergodic environment. Under suitable conditions, we establish homogenization results and identify the limiting effective Dirichlet forms explicitly. The coefficients of the jumping kernels of Dirichlet forms and symmetrizing measures are allowed to be degenerate and unbounded; and the coefficients in the effective Dirichlet forms can be degenerate.

Periodic homogenization of non-symmetric Lévy-type processes

In this paper, we study homogenization problem for strong Markov processes on $\R^d$ having infinitesimal generators $$ \sL f(x)=\int_{\R^d}\left(f(x+z)-f(x)-\langle \nabla f(x), z\rangle \I_{\{|z|\le 1\}} \right) k(x,z)\, Π(dz) +\langle b(x), \nabla f(x) \rangle, \quad f\in C^2_b (\R^d) $$ in periodic media, where $Π$ is a non-negative measure on $\R^d$ that does not charge the origin $0$, satisfies $\int_{\R^d} (1 \wedge |z|^2)\, Π(dz)<\infty$, and can be singular with respect to the Lebesgue measure on $\R^d$. Under a proper scaling, we show the scaled processes converge weakly to Lévy processes on $\R^d$. The results are a counterpart of the celebrated work \cite{BLP,Bh} in the jump-diffusion setting. In particular, we completely characterize the homogenized limiting processes when $b(x) $ is a bounded continuous multivariate 1-periodic $\R^d$-valued function, $k(x,z)$ is a non-negative bounded continuous function that is multivariate 1-periodic in both $x$ and $z$ variables, and, in spherical coordinate $z=(r, θ) \in \R_+\times \bS^{d-1}$, $$ \I_{\{|z|>1\}}\,Π(dz) = \I_{\{ r>1\}} \varrho_0(dθ) \, \frac{ dr }{r^{1+α}} $$ with $α\in (0,\infty)$ and $\varrho_0$ being any finite measure on the unit sphere $\bS^{d-1}$ in $\R^d$. Different phenomena occur depending on the values of $α$; there are five cases: $α\in (0, 1)$, $α=1$, $α\in (1, 2)$, $α=2$ and $α\in (2, \infty)$.

Reflected Backward Stochastic Differential Equation with Rank-based Data

In this paper, we study reflected backward stochastic differential equation (reflected BSDE in abbreviation) with rank-based data in a Markovian framework; that is, the solution to the reflected BSDE is above a prescribed boundary process in a minimal fashion and the generator and terminal value of the reflected BSDE depend on the solution of another stochastic differential equation (SDE in abbreviation) with rank-based drift and diffusion coefficients. We derive regularity properties of the solution to such reflected BSDE, and show that the solution at the initial starting time $t$ and position $x$, which is a deterministic function, is the unique viscosity solution to some obstacle problem (or variational inequality) for the corresponding parabolic partial differential equation.

Stability of parabolic Harnack inequalities for symmetric non-local Dirichlet forms

In this paper, we establish stability of parabolic Harnack inequalities for symmetric non-local Dirichlet forms on metric measure spaces under general volume doubling condition. We obtain their stable equivalent characterizations in terms of the jumping kernels, variants of cutoff Sobolev inequalities, and Poincaré inequalities. In particular, we establish the connection between parabolic Harnack inequalities and two-sided heat kernel estimates, as well as with the Hölder regularity of parabolic functions for symmetric non-local Dirichlet forms.

Systems of interacting diffusions with partial annihilation through membranes

We introduce an interacting particle system in which two families of reflected diffusions interact in a singular manner near a deterministic interface $I$. This system can be used to model the transport of positive and negative charges in a solar cell or the population dynamics of two segregated species under competition. A related interacting random walk model with discrete state spaces has recently been introduced and studied in Chen and Fan (2014). In this paper, we establish the functional law of large numbers for this new system, thereby extending the hydrodynamic limit in Chen and Fan (2014) to reflected diffusions in domains with mixed-type boundary conditions, which include absorption (harvest of electric charges). We employ a new and direct approach that avoids going through the delicate BBGKY hierarchy.

$L^p$-maximal hypoelliptic regularity of nonlocal kinetic Fokker-Planck operators

For $p\in(1,\infty)$, let $u(t,x,v)$ and $f(t,x,v)$ be in $L^p(\mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{R}^d \times \mathbb{R}^d)$ and satisfy the following nonlocal kinetic Fokker-Plank equation on $\mathbb{R}^{1+2d}$ in the weak sense: $$ \partial_t u+v\cdot\nabla_x u=Δ^{α/{2}}_v u+f, $$ where $α\in(0,2)$ and $Δ^{α/{2}}_v$ is the usual fractional Laplacian applied to $v$-variable. We show that there is a constant $C=C(p,α,d)>0$ such that for any $f(t, x, v)\in L^p(\mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{R}^d \times \mathbb{R}^d)=L^p(\mathbb{R}^{1+2d})$, $$ \|Δ_x^{α/{(2(1+α))}}u\|_p+\|Δ_v^{α/{2}}u\|_p\leq C\|f\|_p, $$ where $\|\cdot\|_p$ is the usual $L^p$-norm in $L^p(\mathbb{R}^{1+2d}; d z)$. In fact, in this paper the above inequality is established for a large class of time-dependent non-local kinetic Fokker-Plank equations on $\mathbb{R}^{1+2d}$, with $U_t v$ and $\mathscr{L}^{ν_t}_{σ_t}$ in place of $v\cdot \nabla_x$ and $Δ^{α/2}_v$. See Theorem 3.3 for details.

Boundary Harnack principle and gradient estimates for fractional Laplacian perturbed by non-local operators

Suppose $d\ge 2$ and $0<β<α<2$. We consider the non-local operator $\mathcal{L}^{b}=Δ^{α/2}+\mathcal{S}^{b}$, where $$\mathcal{S}^{b}f(x):=\lim_{\varepsilon\to 0}\mathcal{A}(d,-β)\int_{|z|>\varepsilon}\left(f(x+z)-f(x)\right)\frac{b(x,z)}{|z|^{d+β}}\,dy.$$ Here $b(x,z)$ is a bounded measurable function on $\mathbb{R}^{d}\times\mathbb{R}^{d}$ that is symmetric in $z$, and $\mathcal{A}(d,-β)$ is a normalizing constant so that when $b(x, z)\equiv 1$, $\mathcal{S}^{b}$ becomes the fractional Laplacian $Δ^{β/2}:=-(-Δ)^{β/2}$. In other words, $$\mathcal{L}^{b}f(x):=\lim_{\varepsilon\to 0}\mathcal{A}(d,-β)\int_{|z|>\varepsilon}\left(f(x+z)-f(x)\right) j^b(x, z)\,dz,$$ where $j^b(x, z):= \mathcal{A}(d,-α) |z|^{-(d+α)}+ \mathcal{A}(d,-β) b(x, z)|z|^{-(d+β)}$. It is recently established in Chen and Wang [arXiv:1312.7594 [math.PR]] that, when $j^b(x, z)\geq 0$ on $\mathbb{R}^d\times \mathbb{R}^d$, there is a conservative Feller process $X^{b}$ having $\mathcal{L}^b$ as its infinitesimal generator. In this paper we establish, under certain conditions on $b$, a uniform boundary Harnack principle for harmonic functions of $X^b$ (or equivalently, of $\mathcal{L}^b$) in any $κ$-fat open set. We further establish uniform gradient estimates for non-negative harmonic functions of $X^{b}$ in open sets.

Brownian Motion on Spaces with Varying Dimension

In this paper we introduce and study Brownian motion on state spaces with varying dimension. Starting with a concrete case of such state spaces that models a big square with a flag pole, we construct a Brownian motion on it and study how heat propagates on such a space. We derive sharp two-sided global estimates on its transition density functions (also called heat kernel). These two-sided estimates are of Gaussian type, but the measure on the underlying state space does not satisfy volume doubling property. Parabolic Harnack inequality fails for such a process. Nevertheless, we show Holder regularity holds for its parabolic functions. We also derive the Green function estimates for this process on bounded smooth domains. Brownian motion on some other state spaces with varying dimension are also constructed and studied in this paper.

Global Dirichlet Heat Kernel Estimates for Symmetric Lévy Processes in Half-space

In this paper, we derive explicit sharp two-sided estimates for the Dirichlet heat kernels of a large class of symmetric (but not necessarily rotationally symmetric) Lévy processes on half spaces for all $t>0$. These Lévy processes may or may not have Gaussian component. When Lévy density is comparable to a decreasing function with damping exponent $β$,our estimate is explicit in terms of the distance to the boundary, the Lévy exponent and the damping exponent $β$ of Lévy density.

Heat kernels for non-symmetric diffusion operators with jumps

For $d\geq 2$, we establish the existence and uniqueness of heat kernels for a large class of time-dependent second order diffusion operator with jumps, which is the sum of time-dependent of a second order elliptic differential operators non-divergence form and a non-local $α$-stable-type operator with bounded time-dependent coefficient. Moreover, we obtain sharp two-sided estimates, gradient estimate and fractional derivative estimate for the heat kernels under some mild conditions. Our approach is mainly analytic but also uses some probabilistic techniques.

Law of large numbers for branching symmetric Hunt processes with measure-valued branching rates

We establish weak and strong law of large numbers for a class of branching symmetric Hunt processes with the branching rate being a smooth measure with respect to the underlying Hunt process, and the branching mechanism being general and state-dependent. Our work is motivated by recent work on strong law of large numbers for branching symmetric Markov processes by Chen-Shiozawa [J. Funct. Anal., 250, 374--399, 2007] and for branching diffusions by Engländer-Harris-Kyprianou [Ann. Inst. Henri Poincaré Probab. Stat., 46, 279--298, 2010]. Our results can be applied to some interesting examples that are covered by neither of these papers.

Perturbation by non-local operators

Suppose that $d\ge 1$ and $0<β<α<2$. We establish the existence and uniqueness of the fundamental solution $q^b(t, x, y)$ to a class of (possibly nonsymmetric) non-local operators $L^b=Δ^{α/2}+S^b$, where $$ S^bf(x):=A(d, -β) \int_{R^d} ( f(x+z)-f(x)- \nabla f(x) \cdot z 1_{\{|z|\leq 1\}} ) \frac{b(x, z)}{|z|^{d+β}}dz $$ and $b(x, z)$ is a bounded measurable function on $R^d\times R^d$ with $b(x, z)=b(x, -z)$ for $x, z\in R^d$. Here $A(d, -β)$ is a normalizing constant so that $S^b=Δ^{β/2}$ when $b(x, z)\equiv 1$. We show that if $b(x, z) \geq -\frac{{\cal A}(d, -α)}{A(d, -β)}\, |z|^{β-α}$, then $q^b(t, x, y)$ is a strictly positive continuous function and it uniquely determines a conservative Feller process $X^b$, which has strong Feller property. The Feller process $X^b$ is the unique solution to the martingale problem of $(L^b, {\cal S} (R^d))$, where ${\cal S}(R^d)$ denotes the space of tempered functions on $R^d$. Furthermore, sharp two-sided estimates on $q^b(t, x, y)$ are derived. In stark contrast with the gradient perturbations, these estimates exhibit different behaviors for different types of $b(x, z)$. The model considered in this paper contains the following as a special case. Let $Y$ and $Z$ be (rotationally) symmetric $α$-stable process and symmetric $β$-stable processes on $R^d$, respectively, that are independent to each other. Solution to stochastic differential equations $dX_t=dY_t + c(X_{t-})dZ_t$ has infinitesimal generator $L^b$ with $b(x, z)=| c(x)|^β$.

Reflections at infinity of time changed RBMs on a domain with Liouville branches

Let $Z$ be the transient reflecting Brownian motion on the closure of an unbounded domain $D\subset {\mathbb R}^d$ with $N$ number of Liouville branches. We consider a diffusion $X$ on $\overline D$ having finite lifetime obtained from $Z$ by a time change. We show that $X$ admits only a finite number of possible symmetric conservative diffusion extensions $Y$ beyond its lifetime characterized by possible partitions of the collection of $N$ ends and we identify the family of the extended Dirichlet spaces of all $Y$ (which are independent of time change used) as subspaces of the space ${\rm BL}(D)$ spanned by the extended Sobolev space $H_e^1(D)$ and the approaching probabilities of $Z$ to the ends of Liouville branches.

Stochastic Komatu-Loewner evolutions and BMD domain constant

Let $D={\mathbb H} \setminus \cup_{k=1}^N C_k$ be a standard slit domain, where ${\mathbb H}$ is the upper half plane and $C_k$, $1\leq k\leq N$, are mutually disjoint horizontal line segments in $H$. Given a Jordan arc $γ\subset D$ starting at $\partial H$, let $g_t$ be the unique conformal map from $D\setminusγ[0,t]$ onto a standard slit domain $D_t={\mathbb H} \setminus \cup_{k=1}^N C_k(t)$ satisfying the hydrodynamic normalization at infinity. It has been established recently that $g_t$ satisfies an ODE called a Komatu-Loewner equation in terms of the complex Poisson kernel of the Brownian motion with darning (BMD) for $D_t$. We randomize the Jordan arc $γ$ according to a system of probability measures on the family of equivalence classes of Jordan arcs that enjoy a domain Markov property and a certain conformal invariance property. We show that the induced process $(ξ(t), {\bf s}(t))$ satisfies a Markov type stochastic differential equation, where $ξ(t)$ is a motion on $\partial {\mathbb H}$ and ${\bf} s(t)$ represents the motion of the endpoints of the slits $\{C_k(t),\; 1\le k\le N \}.$ Conversely, given such functions $α$ and $b$ with local Lipschitz continuity, the corresponding SDE admits a unique solution $(ξ(t), {\bf s}(t))$. The latter produces random conformal maps $g_t(z)$ via the Komatu-Loewner equation. The resulting family of random growing hulls $\{F_t\}$ from the conformal mappings is called ${\rm SKLE}_{α,b}.$ We show that it enjoys a certain scaling property and a domain Markov property. Among other things, we further prove that ${\rm SKLE}_{α,-b_{\rm BMD}}$ for a constant $α>0$ has a locality property if and only if $α= \sqrt{6}$, where $b_{\rm BMD}$ is a BMD-domain constant that describes the discrepancy of a standard slit domain from ${\mathbb H}$ relative to BMD.

Stochastic Komatu-Loewner evolutions and SLEs

Let $D={\mathbb H}\setminus \bigcup_{j=1}^N C_j$ be a standard slit domain, where ${\mathbb H}$ is the upper half plane and $C_j,1\le j\le N,$ are mutually disjoint horizontal line segments in ${\mathbb H}$. A stochastic Komatu-Loewner evolution denoted by ${\rm SKLE}_{α,b}$ has been introduced in \cite{CF} as a family $\{F_t\}$ of random growing hulls with $F_t\subset D$ driven by a diffusion process $ξ(t)$ on $\partial {\mathbb H}$ that is determined by certain continuous homogeneous functions $α$ and $b$ defined on the space ${\cal S}$ of all labelled standard slit domains. We aim at identifying the distribution of a suitably reparametrized ${\rm SKLE}_{α,b}$ with that of the Loewner evolution on ${\mathbb H}$ driven by the path of a certain continuous semimartingale and thereby relating the former to the distribution of ${\rm SLE}_{α^2}$ when $α$ is a constant. We then prove that, when $α$ is a constant, ${\rm SKLE}_{α,b}$ up to some random hitting time and modulo a time change has the same distribution as ${\rm SLE}_{α^2}$ under a suitable Girsanov transformation. We further show that a reparametrized ${\rm SKLE}_{\sqrt{6},-b_{\rm BMD}}$ has the same distribution as ${\rm SLE}_6$, where $b_{\rm BMD}$ is the BMD-domain constant indicating the discrepancy of $D$ from ${\mathbb H}$ relative to Brownian motion with darning (BMD in abbreviation). A key ingredient of the proof is a hitting time analysis for the absorbing Brownian motion on ${\mathbb H}.$ We also revisit and examine the locality property of ${\rm SLE}_6$ in several canonical domains. Finally K-L equations and SKLEs for other canonical multiply connected planar domains than the standard slit one are recalled and examined.

Uniqueness of stable-like processes

In this work we consider the following $α$-stable-like operator (a class of pseudo-differential operator) $$ {\mathscr L} f(x):=\int_{\mathbb R^d}[f(x+σ_x y)-f(x)-1_{α\in[1,2)}1_{|y|\leq 1}σ_x y\cdot\nabla f(x)]ν_x(d y), $$ where the Lévy measure $ν_x(d y)$ is comparable with a non-degenerate $α$-stable-type Lévy measure (possibly singular), and $σ_x$ is a bounded and nondegenerate matrix-valued function. Under Hölder assumption on $x\mapstoν_x(d y)$ and uniformly continuity assumption on $x\mapstoσ_x$, we show the well-posedness of martingale problem associated with the operator $\mathscr L$. Moreover, we also obtain the existence-uniqueness of strong solutions for the associated SDE when $σ$ belongs to the first order Sobolev space $\mathbb W^{1,p}(\mathbb R^d)$ provided $p>d(1+α\vee 1)$ and $ν_x=ν$ is a non-degenerate $α$-stable-type Lévy measure.

Dirichlet heat kernel estimates for fractional Laplacian under non-local perturbation

For $d\ge 2$ and $0<β<α<2$, consider a family of non-local operators $\mathcal{L}^{b}=Δ^{α/2}+\mathcal{S}^{b}$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$, where $$ \mathcal{S}^{b}f(x):=\lim_{\varepsilon\to 0}\mathcal{A}(d,-β)\int_{ \{z\in \mathbb{R}^d: |z|>\varepsilon\}} (f(x+z)-f(x))\frac{b(x,z)}{|z|^{d+β}}\,dz, $$ and $b(x,z)$ is a bounded measurable function on $\mathbb{R}^{d}\times\mathbb{R}^{d}$ with $b(x,z)=b(x,-z)$ for every $x,z\in\mathbb{R}^{d}$. Here ${\cal A}(d, -β)$ is a normalizing constant so that $\mathcal{S}^b=-(-Δ)^{β/2}$ when $b(x, z)\equiv 1$. It was recently shown in Chen and Wang [arXiv:1312.7594 [math.PR]] that when $b(x, z) \geq -\frac{\mathcal{A}(d, -α)} {\mathcal{A}(d, -β)}\, |z|^{β-α}$, then $\mathcal{L}^b$ admits a unique fundamental solution $p^b(t, x, y)$ which is strictly positive and continuous. The kernel $p^b(t, x, y)$ uniquely determines a conservative Feller process $X^b$, which has strong Feller property. The Feller process $X^b$ is also the unique solution to the martingale problem of $(\mathcal{L}^b, \mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R}^d))$, where $\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ denotes the space of tempered functions on $\mathbb{R}^d$. In this paper, we are concerned with the subprocess $X^{b,D}$ of $X^{b}$ killed upon leaving a bounded $C^{1,1}$ open set $D\subset \mathbb{R}^d$. We establish explicit sharp two-sided estimates for the transition density function of $X^{b, D}$.

Fluctuation limit for interacting diffusions with partial annihilations through membranes

We study fluctuations of the empirical processes of a non-equilibrium interacting particle system consisting of two species over a domain that is recently introduced in [8] and establish its functional central limit theorem. This fluctuation limit is a distribution-valued Gaussian Markov process which can be represented as a mild solution of a stochastic partial differential equation. The drift of our fluctuation limit involves a new partial differential equation with nonlinear coupled term on the interface that characterized the hydrodynamic limit of the system. The covariance structure of the Gaussian part consists two parts, one involving the spatial motion of the particles inside the domain and other involving a boundary integral term that captures the boundary interactions between two species. The key is to show that the Boltzmann-Gibbs principle holds for our non-equilibrium system. Our proof relies on generalizing the usual correlation functions to the join correlations at two different times.

Heat kernel estimates for $Δ+Δ^{α/2}$ under gradient perturbation

For $d \ge 2$, $α\in (0,2)$ and $M > 0$, we consider the gradient perturbation of a family of nonlocal operators $\{Δ+a^αΔ^{α/2}, a\in (0,M]\}$. We establish the existence and uniqueness of the fundamental solution $p(t, x, y)$ for \begin{equation*} \mathcal{L}^{a,b} = Δ+a^αΔ^{α/2} + b\cdot \nabla, \end{equation*} where $b$ is in Kato class $\mathbb{K}_{d,1}$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$. We show that $p(t, x, y)$ is jointly continuous and derive its sharp two-sided estimates. The kernel $p(t, x, y)$ determines a conservative Feller process $X$. We further show that the law of $X$ is the unique solution of the martingale problem for $(\mathcal{L}^{a,b}, C^\infty_c (\mathbb{R}^d)$ and $X$ can be represented as $$ X_t = X_0 + Z^a_t + \int_0^t b(X_s) ds, \qquad t\geq 0, $$ where $Z^a_t= B_t +aY_t$ for a Brownian motion $B$ and an independent isotropic $α$-stable process $Y$. Moreover, we prove that the above SDE has a unique weak solution.

Obliquely reflected Brownian motion in non-smooth planar domains

We construct obliquely reflected Brownian motions in all bounded simply connected planar domains, including non-smooth domains, with general reflection vector fields on the boundary. Conformal mappings and excursion theory are our main technical tools. A key intermediate step, which may be of independent interest, is an alternative characterization of reflected Brownian motions in smooth bounded planar domains with a given field of angles of oblique reflection on the boundary in terms of a pair of quantities, namely an integrable positive harmonic function, which represents the stationary distribution of the process, and a real number that represents, in a suitable sense, the asymptotic rate of rotation of the process around a reference point in the domain. Furthermore, we also show that any obliquely reflected Brownian motion in a simply connected Jordan domain can be obtained as a suitable limit of obliquely reflected Brownian motions in smooth domains.

Quenched invariance principles for random walks and elliptic diffusions in random media with boundary

Via a Dirichlet form extension theorem and making full use of two-sided heat kernel estimates, we establish quenched invariance principles for random walks in random environments with a boundary. In particular, we prove that the random walk on a supercritical percolation cluster or among random conductances bounded uniformly from below in a half-space, quarter-space, etc., converges when rescaled diffusively to a reflecting Brownian motion, which has been one of the important open problems in this area. We establish a similar result for the random conductance model in a box, which allows us to improve existing asymptotic estimates for the relevant mixing time. Furthermore, in the uniformly elliptic case, we present quenched invariance principles for domains with more general boundaries.

Stochastic flows for Lévy processes with Hölder drifts

In this paper we study the following stochastic differential equation (SDE) in ${\mathbb R}^d$: $$ \mathrm{d} X_t= \mathrm{d} Z_t + b(t, X_t)\mathrm{d} t, \quad X_0=x, $$ where $Z$ is a Lévy process. We show that for a large class of Lévy processes ${Z}$ and Hölder continuous drift $b$, the SDE above has a unique strong solution for every starting point $x\in{\mathbb R}^d$. Moreover, these strong solutions form a $C^1$-stochastic flow. As a consequence, we show that, when ${Z}$ is an $α$-stable-type Lévy process with $α\in (0, 2)$ and $b$ is bounded and $β$-Hölder continuous with $β\in (1- α/{2},1)$, the SDE above has a unique strong solution. When $α\in (0, 1)$, this in particular solves an open problem from Priola \cite{Pr1}. Moreover, we obtain a Bismut type derivative formula for $\nabla {\mathbb E}_x f(X_t)$ when ${Z}$ is a subordinate Brownian motion. To study the SDE above, we first study the following nonlocal parabolic equation with Hölder continuous $b$ and $f$: $$ \partial_t u+{\mathscr L} u+b\cdot \nabla u+f=0,\quad u(1, \cdot )=0, $$ where $\mathscr L$ is the generator of the Lévy process ${Z}$.

Let $λ_0>0$ be the largest eigenvalue of the generator $L$ of $T_t$, and $ϕ_0$ and $\hatϕ_0$ be the eigenfunctions of $L$ and $\hat{L}$ (the dural of $L$) respectively associated with $λ_0$. Under some conditions on the spatial motion and the $ϕ_0$-transformed semigroup of $T_t$, we prove that for a large class of suitable functions $f$, we have $$ \lim_{t\rightarrow\infty}e^{-λ_0 t}< f, X_t> = W_\infty\int_E\hatϕ_0(y)f(y)m(dy),\quad \mathbb{P}_μ{-a.s.}, $$ for any finite initial measure $μ$ on $E$ with compact support, where $W_\infty$ is the martingale limit defined by $W_\infty:=\lim_{t\to\infty}e^{-λ_0t}< ϕ_0, X_t>$. Moreover, the exceptional set in the above limit does not depend on the initial measure $μ$ and the function $f$.

Functional central limit theorem for Brownian particles in domains with Robin boundary condition

We rigorously derive non-equilibrium space-time fluctuation for the particle density of a system of reflected diffusions in bounded Lipschitz domains in $\mathbb R^d$. The particles are independent and are killed by a time-dependent potential which is asymptotically proportional to the boundary local time. We generalize the functional analytic framework introduced by Kotelenez [19, 20] to deal with time-dependent perturbations. Our proof relies on Dirichlet form method rather than the machineries derived from Kotelenez's sub-martingale inequality. Our result holds for any symmetric reflected diffusion, for any bounded Lipschitz domain and for any dimension $d\geq 1$.

Hydrodynamic Limits and Propagation of Chaos for Interacting Random Walks in Domains

A new non-conservative stochastic reaction-diffusion system in which two families of random walks in two adjacent domains interact near the interface is introduced and studied in this paper. Such a system can be used to model the transport of positive and negative charges in a solar cell or the population dynamics of two segregated species under competition. We show that in the macroscopic limit, the particle densities converge to the solution of a coupled nonlinear heat equations. For this, we first prove that propagation of chaos holds by establishing the uniqueness of a new BBGKY hierarchy. A local central limit theorem for reflected diffusions in bounded Lipschitz domains is also established as a crucial tool.

Dirichlet Heat Kernel Estimates for Subordinate Brownian Motions with Gaussian Components

In this paper, we derive explicit sharp two-sided estimates for the Dirichlet heat kernels, in C^{1,1} open sets D in R^d, of a large class of subordinate Brownian motions with Gaussian components. When D is bounded, our sharp two-sided Dirichlet heat kernel estimates hold for all t>0. Integrating the heat kernel estimates with respect to the time variable t, we obtain sharp two-sided estimates for the Green functions, in bounded C^{1,1} open sets, of such subordinate Brownian motions with Gaussian components.

Ergodicity for Time Changed Symmetric Stable Processes

In this paper we study the ergodicity and the related semigroup property for a class of symmetric Markov jump processes associated with time changed symmetric $α$-stable processes. For this purpose, explicit and sharp criteria for Poincaré type inequalities (including Poincaré, super Poincaré and weak Poincaré inequalities) of the corresponding non-local Dirichlet forms are derived. Moreover, our main results, when applied to a class of one-dimensional stochastic differential equations driven by symmetric $α$-stable processes, yield sharp criteria for their various ergodic properties and corresponding functional inequalities.

Heat kernels and analyticity of non-symmetric jump diffusion semigroups

Let $d\geq 1$ and $α\in (0, 2)$. Consider the following non-local and non-symmetric Lévy-type operator on $\mR^d$: $$ \sL^κ_αf(x):=\mbox{p.v.}\int_{\mR^d}(f(x+z)-f(x))\frac{κ(x,z)}{|z|^{d+α}} \dif z, $$ where $0<κ_0\leq κ(x,z)\leq κ_1$, $κ(x,z)=κ(x,-z)$, and $|κ(x,z)-κ(y,z)|\leqκ_2|x-y|^β$ for some $β\in(0,1)$. Using Levi's method, we construct the fundamental solution (also called heat kernel) $p^κ_α(t, x, y)$ of $\sL^κ_α$, and establish its sharp two-sided estimates as well as its fractional derivative and gradient estimates of the heat kernel. We also show that $p^κ_α(t, x, y)$ is jointly Hölder continuous in $(t, x)$. The lower bound heat kernel estimate is obtained by using a probabilistic argument. The fundamental solution of $\sL^κ_α$ gives rise a Feller process $\{X, \mP_x, x\in \mR^d\}$ on $\mR^d$. We determine the Lévy system of $X$ and show that $\mP_x$ solves the martingale problem for $(\sL^κ_α, C^2_b(\mR^d))$. Furthermore, we obtain the analyticity of the non-symmetric semigroup associated with $\sL^κ_α$ in $L^p$-spaces for every $p\in[1,\infty)$. A maximum principle for solutions of the parabolic equation $\partial_t u =\sL^κ_αu$ is also established.

On Uniform Positivity of Transition Densities of Small Noise Constrained Diffusions

Constrained diffusions in convex polyhedral domains with a general oblique reflection field, and with a diffusion coefficient scaled by a small parameter, are considered. Using an interior Dirichlet heat kernel lower bound estimate for second order elliptic operators in bounded domains from [13], certain uniform in the scaling parameter lower bounds on transition densities of such constrained diffusions are established. These lower bounds together with results from [1] give, under additional stability conditions, an exponential leveling property, as the scaling parameter approaches zero, for exit times from suitable bounded domains.

One-dimensional heat equation with discontinuous conductance

We study a second-order parabolic equation with divergence form elliptic operator, having piecewise constant diffusion coefficients with two points of discontinuity. Such partial differential equations appear in the modelization of diffusion phenomena in medium consisting of three kind of materials. Using probabilistic methods, we present an explicit expression of the fundamental solution under certain conditions. We also derive small-time asymptotic expansion of the PDE's solutions in the general case. The obtained results are directly usable in applications.

Uniqueness of Stable Processes with Drift

Suppose that $d\geq1$ and $α\in (1, 2)$. Let $Y$ be a rotationally symmetric $α$-stable process on $\R^d$ and $b$ a $\R^d$-valued measurable function on $\R^d$ belonging to a certain Kato class of $Y$. We show that $\rd X^b_t=\rd Y_t+b(X^b_t)\rd t$ with $X^b_0=x$ has a unique weak solution for every $x\in \R^d$. Let $\sL^b=-(-Δ)^{α/2} + b \cdot \nabla$, which is the infinitesimal generator of $X^b$. Denote by $C^\infty_c(\R^d)$ the space of smooth functions on $\R^d$ with compact support. We further show that the martingale problem for $(\sL^b, C^\infty_c(\R^d))$ has a unique solution for each initial value $x\in \R^d$.

Archimedes' principle for Brownian liquid

We consider a family of hard core objects moving as independent Brownian motions confined to a vessel by reflection. These are subject to gravitational forces modeled by drifts. The stationary distribution for the process has many interesting implications, including an illustration of the Archimedes' principle. The analysis rests on constructing reflecting Brownian motion with drift in a general open connected domain and studying its stationary distribution. In dimension two we utilize known results about sphere packing.

Dirichlet heat kernel estimates for fractional Laplacian with gradient perturbation

Let D be a bounded $C^{1,1}$ open set in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and b an $\mathbb{R}^d$-valued function on $\mathbb{R}^d$ whose components are in a certain Kato class of the rotationally symmetric α-stable process. In this paper, we derive sharp two-sided heat kernel estimates for $\mathcal{L}^b=Δ^{α/2}+b\cdot\nabla$ in D with zero exterior condition. We also obtain the boundary Harnack principle for $\mathcal{L}^b$ in D with explicit decay rate.

Sharp heat kernel estimates for relativistic stable processes in open sets

In this paper, we establish sharp two-sided estimates for the transition densities of relativistic stable processes [i.e., for the heat kernels of the operators $m-(m^{2/α}-Δ)^{α/2}$] in $C^{1,1}$ open sets. Here $m>0$ and $α\in(0,2)$. The estimates are uniform in $m\in(0,M]$ for each fixed $M>0$. Letting $m\downarrow0$, we recover the Dirichlet heat kernel estimates for $Δ^{α/2}:=-(-Δ)^{α/2}$ in $C^{1,1}$ open sets obtained in [14]. Sharp two-sided estimates are also obtained for Green functions of relativistic stable processes in bounded $C^{1,1}$ open sets.

Uniform integrability of exponential martingales and spectral bounds of non-local Feynman-Kac semigroups

In the first part of this paper, we give a useful criterion for uniform integrability of exponential martingales in the context of Markov processes. The condition of this criterion is easy to verify and is, in general, much weaker than the commonly used Novikov's condition. In the second part of this paper, we present a new approach to the study of spectral bounds of Feynman-Kac semigroups for a large class of symmetric Markov processes. We first establish criteria for the $L^p$-independence of spectral bounds for Feynman-Kac semigroups generated by continuous additive functionals, using gaugeability results obtained by the author in \cite{C}. We then extend these analytic criteria for the $L^p$-independence of spectral bounds to non-local Feynman-Kac semigroups via pure jump Girsanov transforms. For this, the uniform integrability of the exponential martingales established in the first part of this paper plays an important role. We use it to show that Kato classes introduced in \cite{C} can only become larger under pure jump Girsanov transforms with symmetric jumping functions.

Global Heat Kernel Estimate for Relativistic Stable Processes in Exterior Open Sets

In this paper, sharp two-sided estimates for the transition densities of relativistic $α$-stable processes with mass $m\in (0, 1]$ in $C^{1,1}$ exterior open sets are established for all time $t>0$. These transition densities are also the Dirichlet heat kernels of $m-(m^{2/α}-Δ)^{α/2}$ with $m\in (0, 1]$ in $C^{1,1}$ exterior open sets. The estimates are uniform in $m$ in the sense that the constants are independent of $m\in (0, 1]$. As a corollary of our main result, we establish sharp two-sided Green function estimates for relativistic $α$-stable processes with mass $m\in (0, 1]$ in $C^{1,1}$ exterior open sets.

Global Heat Kernel Estimates for $Δ+Δ^{α/2}$ in Half-space-like domains

Suppose that $d\ge 1$ and $α\in (0, 2)$. In this paper, by using probabilistic methods, we establish sharp two-sided pointwise estimates for the Dirichlet heat kernels of $\{Δ+ a^αΔ^{α/2}; \ a\in (0, 1]\}$ on half-space-like $C^{1, 1}$ domains in ${\mathbb R}^d$ for all time $t>0$. The large time estimates for half-space-like domains are very different from those for bounded domains. Our estimates are uniform in $a \in (0, 1]$ in the sense that the constants in the estimates are independent of $a\in (0, 1]$. Thus it yields the Dirichlet heat kernel estimates for Brownian motion in half-space-like domains by taking $a\to 0$. Integrating the heat kernel estimates in time $t$, we obtain uniform sharp two-sided estimates for the Green functions of $\{Δ+ a^αΔ^{α/2}; \ a\in (0, 1]\}$ in half-space-like $C^{1, 1}$ domains in ${\mathbb R}^d$.

Stability of Dirichlet heat kernel estimates for non-local operators under Feynman-Kac perturbation

In this paper we show that Dirichlet heat kernel estimates for a class of (not necessarily symmetric) Markov processes are stable under non-local Feynman-Kac perturbations. This class of processes includes, among others, (reflected) symmetric stable-like processes on closed $d$-sets in $\bR^d$, killed symmetric stable processes, censored stable processes in $C^{1, 1}$ open sets as well as stable processes with drifts in bounded $C^{1, 1}$ open sets.

Discrete Approximation of Symmetric Jump Processes on Metric Measure Spaces

In this paper we give general criteria on tightness and weak convergence of discrete Markov chains to symmetric jump processes on metric measure spaces under mild conditions. Heat Kernel Estimate for $Δ+Δ^{α/2}$ in $C^{1,1}$ open sets

We consider a family of pseudo differential operators $\{Δ+ a^αΔ^{α/2}; a\in (0, 1]\}$ on $\bR^d$ for every $d\geq 1$ that evolves continuously from $Δ$ to $Δ+ Δ^{α/2}$, where $α\in (0, 2)$. It gives rise to a family of Lévy processes $\{X^a, a\in (0, 1]\}$ in $\bR^d$, where $X^a$ is the sum of a Brownian motion and an independent symmetric $α$-stable process with weight $a$. We establish sharp two-sided estimates for the heat kernel of $Δ+ a^α Δ^{α/2}$ with zero exterior condition in a family of open subsets, including bounded $C^{1, 1}$ (possibly disconnected) open sets. This heat kernel is also the transition density of the sum of a Brownian motion and an independent symmetric $α$-stable process with weight $a$ in such open sets. Our result is the first sharp two-sided estimates for the transition density of a Markov process with both diffusion and jump components in open sets. Moreover, our result is uniform in $a$ in the sense that the constants in the estimates are independent of $a\in (0, 1]$ so that it recovers the Dirichlet heat kernel estimates for Brownian motion by taking $a\to 0$. Integrating the heat kernel estimates in time $t$, we recover the two-sided sharp uniform Green function estimates of $X^a$ in bounded $C^{1,1}$ open sets in $\bR^d$, which were recently established in \cite{CKSV2} by using a completely different approach.

Symmetric Jump Processes and their Heat Kernel Estimates

We survey the recent development of the DeGiorgi-Nash-Moser-Aronson type theory for a class of symmetric jump processes(or equivalently, a class of symmetric integro-differential operators). We focus on the sharp two-sided estimates for the transition density functions (or heat kernels) of the processes, a priori Holder estimate and parabolic Harnack inequalities for their parabolic functions. In contrast to the second order elliptic differential operator case, the methods to establish these properties for symmetric integro-differential operators are mainly probabilistic.

On unique extension of time changed reflecting Brownian motions

Let $D$ be an unbounded domain in $\RR^d$ with $d\geq 3$. We show that if $D$ contains an unbounded uniform domain, then the symmetric reflecting Brownian motion (RBM) on $\overline D$ is transient. Next assume that RBM $X$ on $\overline D$ is transient and let $Y$ be its time change by Revuz measure ${\bf 1}_D(x) m(x)dx$ for a strictly positive continuous integrable function $m$ on $\overline D$. We further show that if there is some $r>0$ so that $D\setminus \overline {B(0, r)}$ is an unbounded uniform domain, then $Y$ admits one and only one symmetric diffusion that genuinely extends it and admits no killings. In other words, in this case $X$ (or equivalently, $Y$) has a unique Martin boundary point at infinity.
