Heat kernel estimates for Markov processes with jump kernels blowing-up at the boundary

In this paper, we study purely discontinuous symmetric Markov processes on closed subsets of ${\mathbb R}^d$, $d\ge 1$, with jump kernels of the form $J(x,y)=|x-y|^{-d-α}{\mathcal B}(x,y)$, $α\in (0,2)$, where the function ${\mathcal B}(x,y)$ may blow up at the boundary of the state space. This extends the framework developed recently for conservative self-similar Markov processes on the upper half-space to a broader geometric setting. Examples of Markov processes that fall into our general framework include traces of isotropic $α$-stable processes in $C^{1,\rm Dini}$ sets, processes in Lipschitz sets arising in connection with the nonlocal Neumann problem, and a large class of resurrected self-similar processes in the closed upper half-space. We establish sharp two-sided heat kernel estimates for these Markov processes. A fundamental difficulty in accomplishing this task is that, in contrast to the existing literature on heat kernels for jump processes, the tails of the associated jump measures in our setting are not uniformly bounded. Thus, standard techniques in the existing literature used to study heat kernels are not applicable. To overcome this obstacle, we employ recently developed weighted functional inequalities specifically designed for jump kernels blowing up at the boundary.

Stability of estimates for fundamental solutions under Feynman-Kac perturbations for symmetric Markov processes

In this paper, when a given symmetric Markov process X satisfies the stability of global heat kernel two-sided (upper) estimates by Markov perturbations, we give a necessary and sufficient condition on the stability of global two-sided (upper) estimates for fundamental solution of Feynman-Kac semigroup of X. As a corollary, under the same assumptions, a weak type global two-sided (upper) estimates holds for the fundamental solution of Feynman-Kac semigroup with (extended) Kato class conditions for measures. This generalizes all known results on the stability of global integral kernel estimates by symmetric Feynman-Kac perturbations with Kato class conditions in the framework of symmetric Markov processes.

Estimates of Dirichlet heat kernels for unimodal Lévy processes with low intensity of small jumps

In this paper, we study transition density functions for pure jump unimodal Lévy processes killed upon leaving an open set $D$. Under some mild assumptions on the Lévy density, we establish two-sided Dirichlet heat kernel estimates when the open set $D$ is $C^{1, 1}$. Our result covers the case that the Lévy densities of unimodal Lévy processes are regularly varying functions whose indices are equal to the Euclidean dimension. This is the first results on two-sided Dirichlet heat kernel estimates for Lévy processes such that the weak lower scaling index of the Lévy densities is not necessarily strictly bigger than the Euclidean dimension.

Heat kernels for reflected diffusions with jumps on inner uniform domains

In this paper, we study sharp two-sided heat kernel estimates for a large class of symmetric reflected diffusions with jumps on the closure of an inner uniform domain $D$ in a length metric space. The length metric is the intrinsic metric of a strongly local Dirichlet form. When $D$ is an inner uniform domain in the Euclidean space, a prototype for a special case of the processes under consideration are symmetric reflected diffusions with jumps on $D$, whose infinitesimal generators are non-local (pseudo-differential) operators $L$ on $D$ of the form $$ L u(x) =\frac12 \sum_{i, j=1}^d \frac{\partial}{\partial x_i} \left(a_{ij}(x) \frac{\partial u(x)}{\partial x_j}\right) + \lim_{\eps \downarrow 0} \int_{\{y\in D: \, ρ_D(y, x)>\eps\}} (u(y)-u(x)) J(x, y)\, dy $$ satisfying "Neumann boundary condition". Here, $ρ_D(x,y)$ is the length metric on $D$, $A(x)=(a_{ij}(x))_{1\leq i,j\leq d}$ is a measurable $d\times d$ matrix-valued function on $D$ that is uniformly elliptic and bounded, and $$ J(x,y):= \frac{1}{Φ(ρ_D(x,y))} \int_{[α_1, α_2]} \frac{c(α, x,y)} {ρ_D(x,y)^{d+α}} \,ν(dα) , $$ where $ν$ is a finite measure on $[α_1, α_2] \subset (0, 2)$, $Φ$ is an increasing function on $[ 0, \infty )$ with $c_1e^{c_2r^β} \le Φ(r) \le c_3 e^{c_4r^β}$ for some $β\in [0,\infty]$, and $c(α, x, y)$ is a jointly measurable function that is bounded between two positive constants and is symmetric in $(x, y)$.

Estimates on transition densities of subordinators with jumping density decaying in mixed polynomial orders

In this paper, we discuss estimates on transition densities for subordinators, which are global in time. We establish the sharp two-sided estimates on the transition densities for subordinators whose Lévy measures are absolutely continuous and decaying in mixed polynomial orders. Under a weaker assumption on Lévy measures, we also obtain a precise asymptotic behaviors of the transition densities at infinity. Our results cover geometric stable subordinators, Gamma subordinators and much more.

Factorization and estimates of Dirichlet heat kernels for non-local operators with critical killings

In this paper we discuss non-local operators with killing potentials, which may not be in the standard Kato class. We first discuss factorization of their Dirichlet heat kernels in metric measure spaces. Then we establish explicit estimates of the Dirichlet heat kernels under critical killings in $C^{1,1}$ open subsets of $\mathbb{R}^d$ or in $\mathbb{R}^d\setminus\{0\}$. The decay rates of our explicit estimates come from the values of the multiplicative constants in the killing potentials. Our method also provides an alternative and unified proof of the main results of \cite{CKS10a, CKS10b, CKS-AOP}.

Global Dirichlet Heat Kernel Estimates for Symmetric Lévy Processes in Half-space

In this paper, we derive explicit sharp two-sided estimates for the Dirichlet heat kernels of a large class of symmetric (but not necessarily rotationally symmetric) Lévy processes on half spaces for all $t>0$. These Lévy processes may or may not have Gaussian component. When Lévy density is comparable to a decreasing function with damping exponent $β$,our estimate is explicit in terms of the distance to the boundary, the Lévy exponent and the damping exponent $β$ of Lévy density.

Tangential limits for harmonic functions with respect to $ϕ(Δ)$ : stable and beyond

In this paper, we discuss tangential limits for regular harmonic functions with respect to $ϕ(Δ):=-ϕ(-Δ)$ in the $C^{1,1}$ open set $D$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$, where $ϕ$ is the complete Bernstein function and $d \ge 2$. When the exterior function $f$ is local $L^p$-Hölder continuous of order $β$ on $D^c$ with $ p\in(1,\infty]$ and $β>1/p$, for a large class of Bernstein function $ϕ$, we show that the regular harmonic function $u_f$ with respect to $ϕ(Δ)$, whose value is $f$ on $D^c$, converges a.e. through a certain parabola that depends on $ϕ$ and $ϕ'$. Our result includes the case $ϕ(λ)=\log(1+λ^{α/2})$. Our proofs use both the probabilistic and analytic methods.

Two-sided estimates for the transition densities of symmetric Markov processes dominated by stable-like processes in $C^{1,η}$ open sets

In this paper, we study sharp Dirichlet heat kernel estimates for a large class of symmetric Markov processes in $C^{1,η}$ open sets. The processes are symmetric pure jump Markov processes with jumping intensity $κ(x,y) ψ_1 (|x-y|)^{-1} |x-y|^{-d-α}$, where $α\in (0,2)$. Here, $ψ_1$ is an increasing function on $[ 0, \infty )$, with $ψ_1(r)=1$ on $0<r \le 1$ and $c_1e^{c_2r^β} \le ψ_1(r) \le c_3 e^{c_4r^β}$ on $r>1$ for $β\in [0,\infty]$, and $ κ( x, y)$ is a symmetric function confined between two positive constants, with $|κ(x,y)-κ(x,x)|\leq c_5|x-y|^ρ$ for $|x-y|<1$ and $ρ>α/2$. We establish two-sided estimates for the transition densities of such processes in $C^{1,η}$ open sets when $η\in (α/2, 1]$. In particular, our result includes (relativistic) symmetric stable processes and finite-range stable processes in $C^{1,η}$ open sets when $η\in (α/2, 1]$.

Dirichlet Heat Kernel Estimates for Subordinate Brownian Motions with Gaussian Components

In this paper, we derive explicit sharp two-sided estimates for the Dirichlet heat kernels, in C^{1,1} open sets D in R^d, of a large class of subordinate Brownian motions with Gaussian components. When D is bounded, our sharp two-sided Dirichlet heat kernel estimates hold for all t>0. Integrating the heat kernel estimates with respect to the time variable t, we obtain sharp two-sided estimates for the Green functions, in bounded C^{1,1} open sets, of such subordinate Brownian motions with Gaussian components.

Global uniform boundary Harnack principle with explicit decay rate and its application

In this paper, we consider a large class of subordinate Brownian motions $X$ via subordinators with Laplace exponents which are complete Bernstein functions satisfying some mild scaling conditions at zero and at infinity. We first discuss how such conditions govern the behavior of the subordinator and the corresponding subordinate Brownian motion for both large and small time and space. Then we establish a global uniform boundary Harnack principle in (unbounded) open sets for the subordinate Brownian motion. When the open set satisfies the interior and exterior ball conditions with radius $R >0$, we get a global uniform boundary Harnack principle with explicit decay rate. Our boundary Harnack principle is global in the sense that it holds for all $R>0$ and the comparison constants do not depend on $R$, and it is uniform in the sense that it holds for all balls with radii $r \le R$ and the comparison constants depend neither on $D$ nor on $r$. As an application, we give sharp two-sided estimates for the transition density and the Green function of such subordinate Brownian motions in the half-space.

Green function estimates for subordinate Brownian motions : stable and beyond

A subordinate Brownian motion $X$ is a Lévy process which can be obtained by replacing the time of the Brownian motion by an independent subordinator. In this paper, when the Laplace exponent $ϕ$ of the corresponding subordinator satisfies some mild conditions, we first prove the scale invariant boundary Harnack inequality for $X$ on arbitrary open sets. Then we give an explicit form of sharp two-sided estimates on the Green functions of these subordinate Brownian motions in any bounded $C^{1,1}$ open set. As a consequence, we prove the boundary Harnack inequality for $X$ on any $C^{1,1}$ open set with explicit decay rate. Unlike {KSV2, KSV4}, our results cover geometric stable processes and relativistic geometric stable process, i.e. the cases when the subordinator has the Laplace exponent $$ϕ(λ)=\log(1+λ^{α/2}) (0<α\leq 2, d > α)$$ and $$ϕ(λ)=\log(1+(λ+m^{α/2})^{2/α}-m) (0<α<2,\, m>0, d >2) .$$

Boundary Harnack principle and Martin boundary at infinity for subordinate Brownian motions

In this paper we study the Martin boundary of unbounded open sets at infinity for a large class of subordinate Brownian motions. We first prove that, for such subordinate Brownian motions, the uniform boundary Harnack principle at infinity holds for arbitrary unbounded open sets. Then we introduce the notion of $κ$-fatness at infinity for open sets and show that the Martin boundary at infinity of any such open set consists of exactly one point and that point is a minimal Martin boundary point.

Dirichlet heat kernel estimates for fractional Laplacian with gradient perturbation

Suppose that $d\geq2$ and $α\in(1,2)$. Let D be a bounded $C^{1,1}$ open set in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and b an $\mathbb{R}^d$-valued function on $\mathbb{R}^d$ whose components are in a certain Kato class of the rotationally symmetric α-stable process. In this paper, we derive sharp two-sided heat kernel estimates for $\mathcal{L}^b=Δ^{α/2}+b\cdot\nabla$ in D with zero exterior condition. We also obtain the boundary Harnack principle for $\mathcal{L}^b$ in D with explicit decay rate.

Harnack Inequalities for Subordinate Brownian Motions

In this paper, we consider transient subordinate Brownian motion X in R^d, d \geq 1, where the Laplace exponent ϕof the corresponding subordinator satisfies some mild conditions. The scaleinvariant Harnack inequality is proved for X. We first give new forms of asymptotical properties of the Levy and potential density of the subordinator near zero. Using these results we find asymptotics of the Levy density and potential density of X near the origin, which is essential to our approach. The examples which are covered by our results include geometric stable processes and relativistic geometric stable processes, i.e. the cases when the subordinator has the Laplace exponent ϕ(λ)=\log(1+λ^{α/2}) (0<α\leq 2, d > α) and ϕ(λ)=\log(1+(λ+m^{α/2})^{2/α}-m) (0<α<2,\,m>0,d >2).

Oscillation of harmonic functions for subordinate Brownian motion and its applications

In this paper, we establish an oscillation estimate of nonnegative harmonic functions for a pure-jump subordinate Brownian motion. The infinitesimal generator of such subordinate Brownian motion is an integro-differential operator. As an application, we give a probabilistic proof of the following form of relative Fatou theorem for such subordinate Brownian motion X in bounded kappa-fat open set; if u is a positive harmonic function with respect to X in a bounded kappa-fat open set D and h is a positive harmonic function in D vanishing on D^c, then the non-tangential limit of u/h exists almost everywhere with respect to the Martin-representing measure of h.

Potential theory of subordinate Brownian motions with Gaussian components

In this paper we study a subordinate Brownian motion with a Gaussian component and a rather general discontinuous part. The assumption on the subordinator is that its Laplace exponent is a complete Bernstein function with a Lévy density satisfying a certain growth condition near zero. The main result is a boundary Harnack principle with explicit boundary decay rate for non-negative harmonic functions of the process in $C^{1,1}$ open sets. As a consequence of the boundary Harnack principle, we establish sharp two-sided estimates on the Green function of the subordinate Brownian motion in any bounded $C^{1,1}$ open set $D$ and identify the Martin boundary of $D$ with respect to the subordinate Brownian motion with the Euclidean boundary.

Sharp heat kernel estimates for relativistic stable processes in open sets

In this paper, we establish sharp two-sided estimates for the transition densities of relativistic stable processes [i.e., for the heat kernels of the operators $m-(m^{2/α}-Δ)^{α/2}$] in $C^{1,1}$ open sets. Here $m>0$ and $α\in(0,2)$. The estimates are uniform in $m\in(0,M]$ for each fixed $M>0$. Letting $m\downarrow0$, we recover the Dirichlet heat kernel estimates for $Δ^{α/2}:=-(-Δ)^{α/2}$ in $C^{1,1}$ open sets obtained in [14]. Sharp two-sided estimates are also obtained for Green functions of relativistic stable processes in bounded $C^{1,1}$ open sets.

Global Heat Kernel Estimate for Relativistic Stable Processes in Exterior Open Sets

In this paper, sharp two-sided estimates for the transition densities of relativistic $α$-stable processes with mass $m\in (0, 1]$ in $C^{1,1}$ exterior open sets are established for all time $t>0$. These transition densities are also the Dirichlet heat kernels of $m-(m^{2/α}-Δ)^{α/2}$ with $m\in (0, 1]$ in $C^{1,1}$ exterior open sets. The estimates are uniform in $m$ in the sense that the constants are independent of $m\in (0, 1]$. As a corollary of our main result, we establish sharp two-sided Green function estimates for relativistic $α$-stable processes with mass $m\in (0, 1]$ in $C^{1,1}$ exterior open sets.

Global Heat Kernel Estimates for $Δ+Δ^{α/2}$ in Half-space-like domains

Suppose that $d\ge 1$ and $α\in (0, 2)$. In this paper, by using probabilistic methods, we establish sharp two-sided pointwise estimates for the Dirichlet heat kernels of $\{Δ+ a^αΔ^{α/2}; \ a\in (0, 1]\}$ on half-space-like $C^{1, 1}$ domains in ${\mathbb R}^d$ for all time $t>0$. The large time estimates for half-space-like domains are very different from those for bounded domains. Our estimates are uniform in $a \in (0, 1]$ in the sense that the constants in the estimates are independent of $a\in (0, 1]$. Thus it yields the Dirichlet heat kernel estimates for Brownian motion in half-space-like domains by taking $a\to 0$. Integrating the heat kernel estimates in time $t$, we obtain uniform sharp two-sided estimates for the Green functions of $\{Δ+ a^αΔ^{α/2}; \ a\in (0, 1]\}$ in half-space-like $C^{1, 1}$ domains in ${\mathbb R}^d$.

Minimal thinness for subordinate Brownian motion in half space

We study minimal thinness in the half-space $H:=\{x=(\wt{x}, x_d):\, \wt{x}\in \R^{d-1}, x_d>0\}$ for a large class of rotationally invariant Lévy processes, including symmetric stable processes and sums of Brownian motion and independent stable processes. We show that the same test for the minimal thinness of a subset of $H$ below the graph of a nonnegative Lipschitz function is valid for all processes in the considered class. In the classical case of Brownian motion this test was proved by Burdzy.

Stability of Dirichlet heat kernel estimates for non-local operators under Feynman-Kac perturbation

In this paper we show that Dirichlet heat kernel estimates for a class of (not necessarily symmetric) Markov processes are stable under non-local Feynman-Kac perturbations. This class of processes includes, among others, (reflected) symmetric stable-like processes on closed $d$-sets in $\bR^d$, killed symmetric stable processes, censored stable processes in $C^{1, 1}$ open sets as well as stable processes with drifts in bounded $C^{1, 1}$ open sets.

Two-sided Green function estimates for killed subordinate Brownian motions

A subordinate Brownian motion is a Lévy process which can be obtained by replacing the time of the Brownian motion by an independent subordinator. The infinitesimal generator of a subordinate Brownian motion is $-ϕ(-Δ)$, where $ϕ$ is the Laplace exponent of the subordinator. In this paper, we consider a large class of subordinate Brownian motions without diffusion component and with $ϕ$ comparable to a regularly varying function at infinity. This class of processes includes symmetric stable processes, relativistic stable processes, sums of independent symmetric stable processes, sums of independent relativistic stable processes, and much more. We give sharp two-sided estimates on the Green functions of these subordinate Brownian motions in any bounded $κ$-fat open set $D$. When $D$ is a bounded $C^{1,1}$ open set, we establish an explicit form of the estimates in terms of the distance to the boundary. As a consequence of such sharp Green function estimates, we obtain a boundary Harnack principle in $C^{1,1}$ open sets with explicit rate of decay.

Discrete Approximation of Symmetric Jump Processes on Metric Measure Spaces

In this paper we give general criteria on tightness and weak convergence of discrete Markov chains to symmetric jump processes on metric measure spaces under mild conditions. Heat Kernel Estimate for $Δ+Δ^{α/2}$ in $C^{1,1}$ open sets

We consider a family of pseudo differential operators $\{Δ+ a^αΔ^{α/2}; a\in (0, 1]\}$ on $\bR^d$ for every $d\geq 1$ that evolves continuously from $Δ$ to $Δ+ Δ^{α/2}$, where $α\in (0, 2)$. It gives rise to a family of Lévy processes $\{X^a, a\in (0, 1]\}$ in $\bR^d$, where $X^a$ is the sum of a Brownian motion and an independent symmetric $α$-stable process with weight $a$. We establish sharp two-sided estimates for the heat kernel of $Δ+ a^α Δ^{α/2}$ with zero exterior condition in a family of open subsets, including bounded $C^{1, 1}$ (possibly disconnected) open sets. This heat kernel is also the transition density of the sum of a Brownian motion and an independent symmetric $α$-stable process with weight $a$ in such open sets. Our result is the first sharp two-sided estimates for the transition density of a Markov process with both diffusion and jump components in open sets. Moreover, our result is uniform in $a$ in the sense that the constants in the estimates are independent of $a\in (0, 1]$ so that it recovers the Dirichlet heat kernel estimates for Brownian motion by taking $a\to 0$. Integrating the heat kernel estimates in time $t$, we recover the two-sided sharp uniform Green function estimates of $X^a$ in bounded $C^{1,1}$ open sets in $\bR^d$, which were recently established in \cite{CKSV2} by using a completely different approach.
