Crystal Melting, BPS Quivers and Plethystics

We study the refined and unrefined crystal/BPS partition functions of D6-D2-D0 brane bound states for all toric Calabi-Yau threefolds without compact 4-cycles and some non-toric examples. They can be written as products of (generalized) MacMahon functions. We check our expressions and use them as vacuum characters to study the gluings. We then consider the wall crossings and discuss possible crystal descriptions for different chambers. We also express the partition functions in terms of plethystic exponentials. For $\mathbb{C}^3$ and tripled affine quivers, we find their connections to nilpotent Kac polynomials. Similarly, the partition functions of D4-D2-D0 brane bound states can be obtained by replacing the (generalized) MacMahon functions with the inverse of (generalized) Euler functions.

From the String Landscape to the Mathematical Landscape: a Machine-Learning Outlook

We review the recent programme of using machine-learning to explore the landscape of mathematical problems. With this paradigm as a model for human intuition - complementary to and in contrast with the more formalistic approach of automated theorem proving - we highlight some experiments on how AI helps with conjecture formulation, pattern recognition and computation.

Hilbert Series, Machine Learning, and Applications to Physics

We describe how simple machine learning methods successfully predict geometric properties from Hilbert series (HS). Regressors predict embedding weights in projective space to ${\sim}1$ mean absolute error, whilst classifiers predict dimension and Gorenstein index to $>90\%$ accuracy with ${\sim}0.5\%$ standard error. Binary random forest classifiers managed to distinguish whether the underlying HS describes a complete intersection with high accuracies exceeding $95\%$. Neural networks (NNs) exhibited success identifying HS from a Gorenstein ring to the same order of accuracy, whilst generation of 'fake' HS proved trivial for NNs to distinguish from those associated to the three-dimensional Fano varieties considered.

Machine Learning Algebraic Geometry for Physics

We review some recent applications of machine learning to algebraic geometry and physics. Since problems in algebraic geometry can typically be reformulated as mappings between tensors, this makes them particularly amenable to supervised learning. Additionally, unsupervised methods can provide insight into the structure of such geometrical data. At the heart of this programme is the question of how geometry can be machine learned, and indeed how AI helps one to do mathematics. This is a chapter contribution to the book Machine learning and Algebraic Geometry, edited by A. Kasprzyk et al.

Machine Learning Calabi-Yau Hypersurfaces

We revisit the classic database of weighted-P4s which admit Calabi-Yau 3-fold hypersurfaces equipped with a diverse set of tools from the machine-learning toolbox. Unsupervised techniques identify an unanticipated almost linear dependence of the topological data on the weights. This then allows us to identify a previously unnoticed clustering in the Calabi-Yau data. Supervised techniques are successful in predicting the topological parameters of the hypersurface from its weights with an accuracy of R^2 > 95%. Supervised learning also allows us to identify weighted-P4s which admit Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces to 100% accuracy by making use of partitioning supported by the clustering behaviour.

Machine-Learning the Classification of Spacetimes

On the long-established classification problems in general relativity we take a novel perspective by adopting fruitful techniques from machine learning and modern data-science. In particular, we model Petrov's classification of spacetimes, and show that a feed-forward neural network can achieve high degree of success. We also show how data visualization techniques with dimensionality reduction can help analyze the underlying patterns in the structure of the different types of spacetimes.

Mahler Measure for a Quiver Symphony

Adopting the Mahler measure from number theory, we introduce it to toric quiver gauge theories, and study some of its salient features and physical implications. We propose that the Mahler measure is a universal measure for the quiver, encoding its dynamics with the monotonic behaviour along a so-called Mahler flow including two special points at isoradial and tropical limits. Along the flow, the amoeba, from tropical geometry, provides geometric interpretations for the dynamics of the quiver. In the isoradial limit, the maximization of Mahler measure is shown to be equivalent to $a$-maximization. The Mahler measure and its derivative are closely related to the master space, leading to the property that the specular duals have the same functions as coefficients in their expansions, hinting the emergence of a free theory in the tropical limit. Moreover, they indicate the existence of phase transition. We also find that the Mahler measure should be invariant under Seiberg duality.

Quantum Gravity and Phenomenology: Dark Matter, Dark Energy, Vacuum Selection, Emergent Spacetime, and Wormholes

We discuss the relevance of quantum gravity to the frontier questions in high energy phenomenology: the problems of dark matter, dark energy, and vacuum selection as well as the problems of emergent spacetime and wormholes. Dark matter and dark energy phenomenology, and the problem of vacuum selection are discussed within the context of string theory as a model of quantum gravity. Emergent spacetime and wormholes are discussed in a more general context of effective theories of quantum gravity.

Representation of the Fermionic Boundary Operator

The boundary operator is a linear operator that acts on a collection of high-dimensional binary points (simplices) and maps them to their boundaries. This boundary map is one of the key components in numerous applications, including differential equations, machine learning, computational geometry, machine vision and control systems. We consider the problem of representing the full boundary operator on a quantum computer. We first prove that the boundary operator has a special structure in the form of a complete sum of fermionic creation and annihilation operators. We then use the fact that these operators pairwise anticommute to produce an $O(n)$-depth circuit that exactly implements the boundary operator without any Trotterization or Taylor series approximation errors. Having fewer errors reduces the number of shots required to obtain desired accuracies.

Calabi-Yau Metrics, Energy Functionals and Machine-Learning

We apply machine learning to the problem of finding numerical Calabi-Yau metrics. We extend previous work on learning approximate Ricci-flat metrics calculated using Donaldson's algorithm to the much more accurate "optimal" metrics of Headrick and Nassar. We show that machine learning is able to predict the Kähler potential of a Calabi-Yau metric having seen only a small sample of training data.

Integrality, Duality and Finiteness in Combinatoric Topological Strings

A remarkable result at the intersection of number theory and group theory states that the order of a finite group $G$ (denoted $|G|$) is divisible by the dimension $d_R$ of any irreducible complex representation of $G$. We show that the integer ratios ${ |G|^2 / d_R^2 } $ are combinatorially constructible using finite algorithms which take as input the amplitudes of combinatoric topological strings ($G$-CTST) of finite groups based on 2D Dijkgraaf-Witten topological field theories ($G$-TQFT2). The ratios are also shown to be eigenvalues of handle creation operators in $G$-TQFT2/$G$-CTST. These strings have recently been discussed as toy models of wormholes and baby universes by Marolf and Maxfield, and Gardiner and Megas. Boundary amplitudes of the $G$-TQFT2/$G$-CTST provide algorithms for combinatoric constructions of normalized characters. Stringy S-duality for closed $G$-CTST gives a dual expansion generated by disconnected entangled surfaces. There are universal relations between $G$-TQFT2 amplitudes due to the finiteness of the number $K $ of conjugacy classes. These relations can be labelled by Young diagrams and are captured by null states in an inner product constructed by coupling the $G$-TQFT2 to a universal TQFT2 based on symmetric group algebras. We discuss the scenario of a 3D holographic dual for this coupled theory and the implications of the scenario for the factorization puzzle of 2D/3D holography raised by wormholes in 3D.

Machine-Learning Dessins d'Enfants: Explorations via Modular and Seiberg-Witten Curves

We apply machine-learning to the study of dessins d'enfants. Specifically, we investigate a class of dessins which reside at the intersection of the investigations of modular subgroups, Seiberg-Witten curves and extremal elliptic K3 surfaces. A deep feed-forward neural network with simple structure and standard activation functions without prior knowledge of the underlying mathematics is established and imposed onto the classification of extension degree over the rationals, known to be a difficult problem. The classifications reached 0.92 accuracy with 0.03 standard error relatively quickly. The Seiberg-Witten curves for those with rational coefficients are also tabulated.

Some Open Questions in Quiver Gauge Theory

Quivers, gauge theories and singular geometries are of great interest in both mathematics and physics. In this note, we collect a few open questions which have arisen in various recent works at the intersection between gauge theories, representation theory, and algebraic geometry. The questions originate from the study of supersymmetric gauge theories in different dimensions with different supersymmetries. Although these constitute merely the tip of a vast iceberg, we hope this guide can give a hint of possible directions in future research. This is an invited contribution to a special volume of Proyecciones, E. Gasparim, Ed., and it is the hope that the questions are specific enough for research projects aimed at PhD students.

The World in a Grain of Sand: Condensing the String Vacuum Degeneracy

We propose a novel approach toward the vacuum degeneracy problem of the string landscape, by finding an efficient measure of similarity amongst compactification scenarios. Using a class of some one million Calabi-Yau manifolds as concrete examples, the paradigm of few-shot machine-learning and Siamese Neural Networks represents them as points in R(3) where the similarity score between two manifolds is the Euclidean distance between their R(3) representatives. Using these methods, we can compress the search space for exceedingly rare manifolds to within one percent of the original data by training on only a few hundred data points. We also demonstrate how these methods may be applied to characterize `typicality' for vacuum representatives.

Calabi-Yau Spaces in the String Landscape

Calabi-Yau spaces, or Kahler spaces admitting zero Ricci curvature, have played a pivotal role in theoretical physics and pure mathematics for the last half-century. In physics, they constituted the first and natural solution to compactification of superstring theory to our 4-dimensional universe, primarily due to one of their equivalent definitions being the admittance of covariantly constant spinors. Since the mid-1980s, physicists and mathematicians have joined forces in creating explicit examples of Calabi-Yau spaces, compiling databases of formidable size, including the complete intersecion (CICY) dataset, the weighted hypersurfaces dataset, the elliptic-fibration dataset, the Kreuzer-Skarke toric hypersurface dataset, generalized CICYs etc., totaling at least on the order of 10^10 manifolds. These all contribute to the vast string landscape, the multitude of possible vacuum solutions to string compactification. More recently, this collaboration has been enriched by computer science and data science, the former, in bench-marking the complexity of the algorithms in computing geometric quantities and the latter, in applying techniques such as machine-learning in extracting unexpected information. These endeavours, inspired by the physics of the string landscape, have rendered the investigation of Calabi-Yau spaces one of the most exciting and inter-disciplinary fields. Cusps, Congruence Groups and Monstrous Dessins

We study general properties of the dessins d'enfants associated with the Hecke congruence subgroups $Γ_0(N)$ of the modular group $\mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{R})$. The definition of the $Γ_0(N)$ as the stabilisers of couples of projective lattices in a two-dimensional vector space gives an interpretation of the quotient set $Γ_0(N)\backslash\mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{R})$ as the projective lattices $N$-hyperdistant from a reference one, and hence as the projective line over the ring $\mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z}$. The natural action of $\mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{R})$ on the lattices defines a dessin d'enfant structure, allowing for a combinatorial approach to features of the classical modular curves, such as the torsion points and the cusps. We tabulate the dessins d'enfants associated with the $15$ Hecke congruence subgroups of genus zero, which arise in Moonshine for the Monster sporadic group.

Graph Laplacians, Riemannian Manifolds and their Machine-Learning

Graph Laplacians as well as related spectral inequalities and (co-)homology provide a foray into discrete analogues of Riemannian manifolds, providing a rich interplay between combinatorics, geometry and theoretical physics. We apply some of the latest techniques in data science such as supervised and unsupervised machine-learning and topological data analysis to the Wolfram database of some 8000 finite graphs in light of studying these correspondences. Encouragingly, we find that neural classifiers, regressors and networks can perform, with high efficiently and accuracy, a multitude of tasks ranging from recognizing graph Ricci-flatness, to predicting the spectral gap, to detecting the presence of Hamiltonian cycles, etc.

Lectures on the Calabi-Yau Landscape

In these lecture notes, we survey the landscape of Calabi-Yau threefolds, and the use of machine learning to explore it. We begin with the compact portion of the landscape, focusing in particular on complete intersection Calabi-Yau varieties (CICYs) and elliptic fibrations. Non-compact Calabi-Yau manifolds are manifest in Type II superstring theories, they arise as representation varieties of quivers, used to describe gauge theories in the bulk familiar four dimensions. Finally, given the huge amount of Calabi-Yau data, whether and how machine learning can be applied to algebraic geometry and string landscape is also discussed. These notes are directed to the beginning graduate student interested in mathematics and in physics, and are based on lectures given by the 2nd author at the 2019 PIMS Summer School on Algebraic Geometry in High-Energy Physics at the University of Saskatchewan.

Machine Learning Calabi-Yau Four-folds

Hodge numbers of Calabi-Yau manifolds depend non-trivially on the underlying manifold data and they present an interesting challenge for machine learning. In this letter we consider the data set of complete intersection Calabi-Yau four-folds, a set of about 900,000 topological types, and study supervised learning of the Hodge numbers h^1,1 and h^3,1 for these manifolds. We find that h^1,1 can be successfully learned (to 96% precision) by fully connected classifier and regressor networks. While both types of networks fail for h^3,1, we show that a more complicated two-branch network, combined with feature enhancement, can act as an efficient regressor (to 98% precision) for h^3,1, at least for a subset of the data. This hints at the existence of an, as yet unknown, formula for Hodge numbers.

Machine Learning Etudes in Conformal Field Theories

We demonstrate that various aspects of Conformal Field Theory are amenable to machine learning. Relatively modest feed-forward neural networks are able to distinguish between scale and conformal invariance of a three-point function and identify a crossing-symmetric four-point function to nearly a hundred percent accuracy. Furthermore, neural networks are also able to identify conformal blocks appearing in a putative CFT four-point function and predict the values of the corresponding OPE coefficients. Neural networks also successfully classify primary operators by their quantum numbers under discrete symmetries in the CFT from examining OPE data. We also demonstrate that neural networks are able to learn the available OPE data for scalar correlation function in the 3d Ising model and predict the twists of higher-spin operators that appear in scalar OPE channels by regression.

Machine Learning String Standard Models

We study machine learning of phenomenologically relevant properties of string compactifications, which arise in the context of heterotic line bundle models. Both supervised and unsupervised learning are considered. We find that, for a fixed compactification manifold, relatively small neural networks are capable of distinguishing consistent line bundle models with the correct gauge group and the correct chiral asymmetry from random models without these properties. The same distinction can also be achieved in the context of unsupervised learning, using an auto-encoder. Learning non-topological properties, specifically the number of Higgs multiplets, turns out to be more difficult, but is possible using sizeable networks and feature-enhanced data sets.

Calabi-Yau Varieties: from Quiver Representations to Dessins d'Enfants

The connections amongst (1) quivers whose representation varieties are Calabi-Yau, (2) the combinatorics of bipartite graphs on Riemann surfaces, and (3) the geometry of mirror symmetry have engendered a rich subject at whose heart is the physics of gauge/string theories. We review the various parts of this intricate story in some depth, for a mathematical audience without assumption of any knowledge of physics, emphasizing a plethora of results residing at the intersection between algebraic geometry, representation theory and number theory.

Composite Genus One Belyi Maps

Motivated by a demand for explicit genus 1 Belyi maps from theoretical physics, we give an efficient method of explicitly computing genus one Belyi maps by (1) composing covering maps from elliptic curves to the Riemann sphere with simpler (univariate) genus zero Belyi maps, as well as by (2) composing further with isogenies between elliptic curves. This gives many new explicit dessins on the doubly periodic plane, including several which have been realized in the physics literature as so-called brane-tilings in the context of quiver gauge theories.

Hecke Groups, Dessins d'Enfants and the Archimedean Solids

Grothendieck's dessins d'enfants arise with ever-increasing frequency in many areas of 21st century mathematical physics. In this paper, we review the connections between dessins and the theory of Hecke groups. Focussing on the restricted class of highly symmetric dessins corresponding to the so-called Archimedean solids, we apply this theory in order to provide a means of computing representatives of the associated conjugacy classes of Hecke subgroups in each case. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that dessins arising in mathematical physics can point to new and hitherto unexpected directions for further research. In addition, given the particular ubiquity of many of the dessins corresponding to the Archimedean solids, the hope is that the computational results of this paper will prove useful in the further study of these objects in mathematical physics contexts.

An Algebraic Approach to the Scattering Equations

We employ the so-called companion matrix method from computational algebraic geometry, tailored for zero-dimensional ideals, to study the scattering equations. The method renders the CHY-integrand of scattering amplitudes computable using simple linear algebra and is amenable to an algorithmic approach. Certain identities in the amplitudes as well as rationality of the final integrand become immediate in this formalism.

Dessins d'Enfants in $\mathcal{N}=2$ Generalised Quiver Theories

We study Grothendieck's dessins d'enfants in the context of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories in $\left(3+1\right)$ dimensions with product $SU\left(2\right)$ gauge groups which have recently been considered by Gaiotto et al. We identify the precise context in which dessins arise in these theories: they are the so-called ribbon graphs of such theories at certain isolated points in the Coulomb branch of the moduli space. With this point in mind, we highlight connections to other work on trivalent dessins, gauge theories, and the modular group.

Seiberg Duality, Quiver Gauge Theories, and Ihara Zeta Function

Testing R-parity with Geometry

We present a complete classification of the vacuum geometries of all renormalizable superpotentials built from the fields of the electroweak sector of the MSSM. In addition to the Severi and affine Calabi-Yau varieties previously found, new vacuum manifolds are identified; we thereby investigate the geometrical implication of theories which display a manifest matter parity (or R-parity) via the distinction between leptonic and Higgs doublets, and of the lepton number assignment of the right-handed neutrino fields. We find that the traditional R-parity assignments of the MSSM more readily accommodate the neutrino see-saw mechanism with non-trivial geometry than those superpotentials that violate R-parity. However there appears to be no geometrical preference for a fundamental Higgs bilinear in the superpotential, with operators that violate lepton number, such as νH\bar{H}, generating vacuum moduli spaces equivalent to those with a fundamental bilinear.

A Calabi-Yau Database: Threefolds Constructed from the Kreuzer-Skarke List

Kreuzer and Skarke famously produced the largest known database of Calabi-Yau threefolds by providing a complete construction of all 473,800,776 reflexive polyhedra that exist in four dimensions. These polyhedra describe the singular limits of ambient toric varieties in which Calabi-Yau threefolds can exist as hypersurfaces. In this paper, we review how to extract topological and geometric information about Calabi-Yau threefolds using the toric construction, and we provide, in a companion online database (see http://nuweb1.neu.edu/cydatabase), a detailed inventory of these quantities which are of interest to physicists. Many of the singular ambient spaces described by the Kreuzer-Skarke list can be smoothed out into multiple distinct toric ambient spaces describing different Calabi-Yau threefolds. We provide a list of the different Calabi-Yau threefolds which can be obtained from each polytope, up to current computational limits. We then give the details of a variety of quantities associated to each of these Calabi-Yau such as Chern classes, intersection numbers, and the Kähler and Mori cones, in addition to the Hodge data. This data forms a useful starting point for a number of physical applications of the Kreuzer-Skarke list.

Eta Products, BPS States and K3 Surfaces

Inspired by the multiplicative nature of the Ramanujan modular discriminant, Delta, we consider physical realizations of certain multiplicative products over the Dedekind eta-function in two parallel directions: the generating function of BPS states in certain heterotic orbifolds and elliptic K3 surfaces associated to congruence subgroups of the modular group. We show that they are, after string duality to type II, the same K3 surfaces admitting Nikulin automorphisms. In due course, we will present some identities arising from q-expansions as well as relations to the sporadic Mathieu group M24.

Extremal Bundles on Calabi-Yau Threefolds

We study constructions of stable holomorphic vector bundles on Calabi-Yau threefolds, especially those with exact anomaly cancellation which we call extremal. By going through the known databases we find that such examples are rare in general and can be ruled out for the spectral cover construction for all elliptic threefolds. We then introduce a generalized version of Hartshorne-Serre construction and use it to yield extremal bundles of general ranks and study their geometry. In light of this probing the geometry of the space of stable vector bundles, we revisit the DRY conjecture on stable reflexive sheaves while focusing on the distribution of Chern numbers to use both theoretical and statistical ideas to provide evidence for DRY.

Gauge Theories and Dessins d'Enfants: Beyond the Torus

Dessin d'Enfants on elliptic curves are a powerful way of encoding doubly-periodic brane tilings, and thus, of four-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories whose vacuum moduli space is toric, providing an interesting interplay between physics, geometry, combinatorics and number theory. We discuss and provide a partial classification of the situation in genera other than one by computing explicit Belyi pairs associated to the gauge theories. Important also is the role of the Igusa and Shioda invariants that generalise the elliptic $j$-invariant.

These tessellations are generalizations of brane tilings, or bipartite graphs on the torus as well as the Platonic and Archimedean solids on the sphere. On higher genus they give rise to intricate patterns. Special attention will be paid to the master space and the moduli space of vacua of the gauge theory and to how their geometry is determined by the tessellations.

Heterotic Model Building: 16 Special Manifolds

We study heterotic model building on 16 specific Calabi-Yau manifolds constructed as hypersurfaces in toric four-folds. These 16 manifolds are the only ones among the more than half a billion manifolds in the Kreuzer-Skarke list with a non-trivial first fundamental group. We classify the line bundle models on these manifolds, both for SU(5) and SO(10) GUTs, which lead to consistent supersymmetric string vacua and have three chiral families. A total of about 29000 models is found, most of them corresponding to SO(10) GUTs. These models constitute a starting point for detailed heterotic model building on Calabi-Yau manifolds in the Kreuzer-Skarke list. The Geometry of Generations

We present an intriguing and precise interplay between algebraic geometry and the phenomenology of generations of particles. Using the electroweak sector of the MSSM as a testing ground, we compute the moduli space of vacua as an algebraic variety for multiple generations of Standard Model matter and Higgs doublets. The space is shown to have Calabi-Yau, Grassmannian, and toric signatures which sensitively depend on the number of generations of leptons, as well as inclusion of Majorana mass terms for right-handed neutrinos. We speculate as to why three generations is special.

Interestingly, we find structures such as affine Calabi-Yau threefolds as well as singular K3 and Fano varieties.

While this result appeared many years ago using techniques of computational algebraic geometry, it has never been demonstrated analytically. Here, we present an analytical derivation of the vacuum geometry of the electroweak theory by understanding how the F- and D-term relations lead to the Veronese surface. Superconformal Block Quivers, Duality Trees and Diophantine Equations

We generalize previous results on N=1, (3+1)-dimensional superconformal block quiver gauge theories. It is known that the necessary conditions for a theory to be superconformal, i.e. that the beta and gamma functions vanish in addition to anomaly cancellation, translate to a Diophantine equation in terms of the quiver data. We re-derive results for low block numbers revealing an new intriguing algebraic structure underlying a class of possible superconformal fixed points of such theories. After explicitly computing the five block case Diophantine equation, we use this structure to reorganize the result in a form that can be applied to arbitrary block numbers. We argue that these theories can be thought of as vectors in the root system of the corresponding quiver and superconformality conditions are shown to associate them to certain subsets of imaginary roots. These methods also allow for an interpretation of Seiberg duality as the action of the affine Weyl group on the root lattice.

Supersymmetric Hidden Sectors for Heterotic Standard Models

Within the context of the weakly coupled E8 x E8 heterotic string, we study the hidden sector of heterotic standard model compactifications to four-dimensions. Specifically, we present a class of hidden sector vector bundles - composed of the direct sum of line bundles only - that, together with an effective bulk five-brane, renders the heterotic standard model entirely N=1 supersymmetric. Two explicit hidden sectors are constructed and analyzed in this context; one with the gauge group E7 x U(1) arising from a single line bundle and a second with an SO(12) x U(1) x U(1) gauge group constructed from the direct sum of two line bundles. Each hidden sector bundle is shown to satisfy all requisite physical constraints within a finite region of the Kahler cone. We also clarify that the first Chern class of the line bundles need not be even in our context, as has often been imposed in the model building literature.

Brane Geometry and Dimer Models

The field content and interactions of almost all known gauge theories in AdS_5/CFT_4 can be expressed in terms of dimer models or bipartite graphs drawn on a torus. Associated with the fundamental cell is a complex structure parameter tau_R. Based on the brane realization of these theories, we can specify a special Lagrangian (SLag) torus fibration that is the natural candidate to be identified as the torus on which the dimer lives. Using the metrics known in the literature, we compute the complex structure tau_G of this torus. For the theories on C^3 and the conifold and for orbifolds thereof tau_R = tau_G. However, for more complicated examples, we show that the two complex structures cannot be equal and yet, remarkably, differ only by a few percent. We leave the explanation for this extraordinary proximity as an open challenge.

We describe major extensions to this survey, which are currently underway.

N=2 Gauge Theories: Congruence Subgroups, Coset Graphs and Modular Surfaces

We establish a correspondence between generalized quiver gauge theories in four dimensions and congruence subgroups of the modular group, hinging upon the trivalent graphs which arise in both. The gauge theories and the graphs are enumerated and their numbers are compared. The correspondence is particularly striking for genus zero torsion-free congruence subgroups as exemplified by those which arise in Moonshine. We analyze in detail the case of index 24, where modular elliptic K3 surfaces emerge: here, the elliptic j-invariants can be recast as dessins d'enfant which dictate the Seiberg-Witten curves.

Numerical Algebraic Geometry: A New Perspective on String and Gauge Theories

The interplay rich between algebraic geometry and string and gauge theories has recently been immensely aided by advances in computational algebra. However, these symbolic (Gröbner) methods are severely limited by algorithmic issues such as exponential space complexity and being highly sequential. In this paper, we introduce a novel paradigm of numerical algebraic geometry which in a plethora of situations overcomes these short-comings. Its so-called 'embarrassing parallelizability' allows us to solve many problems and extract physical information which elude the symbolic methods. We describe the method and then use it to solve various problems arising from physics which could not be otherwise solved.

Quiver Structure of Heterotic Moduli

We analyse the vector bundle moduli arising from generic heterotic compactifications from the point of view of quiver representations. Phenomena such as stability walls, crossing between chambers of supersymmetry, splitting of non-Abelian bundles and dynamic generation of D-terms are succinctly encoded into finite quivers. By studying the Poincaré polynomial of the quiver moduli space using the Reineke formula, we can learn about such useful concepts as Donaldson-Thomas invariants, instanton transitions and supersymmetry breaking.

Towards the Continuous Limit of Cluster Integrable Systems

We initiate the study of how to extend the correspondence between dimer models and (0+1)-dimensional cluster integrable systems to (1+1) and (2+1)-dimensional continuous integrable field theories, addressing various points that are necessary for achieving this goal. We first study how to glue and split two integrable systems, from the perspectives of the spectral curve, the resolution of the associated toric Calabi-Yau 3-folds and Higgsing in quiver theories on D3-brane probes. We identify a continuous parameter controlling the decoupling between the components and present two complementary methods for determining the dependence on this parameter of the dynamical variables of the integrable system. Interested in constructing systems with an infinite number of degrees of freedom, we study the combinatorics of integrable systems built up from a large number of elementary components, and introduce a toy model capturing important features expected to be present in a continuous reformulation of cluster integrable systems.

Graph Zeta Function and Gauge Theories

Along the recently trodden path of studying certain number theoretic properties of gauge theories, especially supersymmetric theories whose vacuum manifolds are non-trivial, we investigate Ihara's Graph Zeta Function for large classes of quiver theories and periodic tilings by bi-partite graphs. In particular, we examine issues such as the spectra of the adjacency and whether the gauge theory satisfies the strong and weak versions of the graph theoretical analogue of the Riemann Hypothesis.

Heterotic Bundles on Calabi-Yau Manifolds with Small Picard Number

We undertake a systematic scan of vector bundles over spaces from the largest database of known Calabi-Yau three-folds, in the context of heterotic string compactification. Specifically, we construct positive rank five monad bundles over Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in toric varieties, with the number of Kahler moduli equal to one, two, and three and extract physically interesting models. We select models which can lead to three families of matter after dividing by a freely-acting discrete symmetry and including Wilson lines. About 2000 such models on two manifolds are found.

Invariants of Toric Seiberg Duality

Three-branes at a given toric Calabi-Yau singularity lead to different phases of the conformal field theory related by toric (Seiberg) duality. Using the dimer model/brane tiling description in terms of bipartite graphs on a torus, we find a new invariant under Seiberg duality, namely the Klein j-invariant of the complex structure parameter in the distinguished isoradial embedding of the dimer, determined by the physical R-charges. Additional number theoretic invariants are described in terms of the algebraic number field of the R-charges. We also give a new compact description of the a-maximization procedure by introducing a generalized incidence matrix.

The Beta Ansatz: A Tale of Two Complex Structures

Brane tilings, sometimes called dimer models, are a class of bipartite graphs on a torus which encode the gauge theory data of four-dimensional SCFTs dual to D3-branes probing toric Calabi--Yau threefolds. An efficient way of encoding this information exploits the theory of dessin d'enfants, expressing the structure in terms of a permutation triple, which is in turn related to a Belyi pair, namely a holomorphic map from a torus to a P^1 with three marked points. The procedure of a-maximization, in the context of isoradial embeddings of the dimer, also associates a complex structure to the torus, determined by the R-charges in the SCFT, which can be compared with the Belyi complex structure. Algorithms for the explicit construction of the Belyi pairs are described in detail. In the case of orbifolds, these algorithms are related to the construction of covers of elliptic curves, which exploits the properties of Weierstrass elliptic functions. We present a counterexample to a previous conjecture identifying the complex structure of the Belyi curve to the complex structure associated with R-charges.

(Un)Higgsing the M2-brane

We study various aspects of N=2 quiver-Chern-Simons theories, conjectured to be dual to M2-branes at toric Calabi-Yau four-fold singularities, under Higgsing. In particular we study in detail the orbifold C^4/Z_2^3, obtaining a number of different quiver-Chern-Simons phases for this model, and all 18 toric partial resolutions thereof. In the process we develop a general un-Higgsing algorithm that allows one to construct quiver-Chern-Simons theories by blowing up, thus obtaining a plethora of new models. In addition we explain how turning on torsion G-flux non-trivially affects the supergravity dual of Higgsing, showing that the supergravity and field theory analyses precisely match in an example based on the Sasaki-Einstein manifold Y^(1,2)(CP^2).

An Algorithmic Approach to Heterotic String Phenomenology

We briefly review the recent programme to construct, systematically and algorithmically, large classes of heterotic vacua, as well as the search for the MSSM therein. It is hoped that this top-down algorithmic approach will isolate special corners in the heterotic landscape.

On Fields over Fields

We investigate certain arithmetic properties of field theories. In particular, we study the vacuum structure of supersymmetric gauge theories as algebraic varieties over number fields of finite characteristic. Parallel to the Plethystic Programme of counting the spectrum of operators from the syzygies of the complex geometry, we construct, based on the zeros of the vacuum moduli space over finite fields, the local and global Hasse-Weil zeta functions, as well as develop the associated Dirichlet expansions. We find curious dualities wherein the geometrical properties and asymptotic behaviour of one gauge theory is governed by the number theoretic nature of another.

In this context we also outline a relation between string theory and the Riemann Hypothesis.

Exploring Positive Monad Bundles And A New Heterotic Standard Model

A complete analysis of all heterotic Calabi-Yau compactifications based on positive two-term monad bundles over favourable complete intersection Calabi-Yau threefolds is performed. We show that the original data set of about 7000 models contains 91 standard-like models which we describe in detail. A closer analysis of Wilson-line breaking for these models reveals that none of them gives rise to precisely the matter field content of the standard model. We conclude that the entire set of positive two-term monads on complete intersection Calabi-Yau manifolds is ruled out on phenomenological grounds. We also take a first step in analyzing the larger class of non-positive monads. In particular, we construct a supersymmetric heterotic standard model within this class. This model has the standard model gauge group and an additional U(1)_{B-L} symmetry, precisely three families of quarks and leptons, one pair of Higgs doublets and no anti-families or exotics of any kind.

Heterotic Models from Vector Bundles on Toric Calabi-Yau Manifolds

We systematically approach the construction of heterotic E_8 X E_8 Calabi-Yau models, based on compact Calabi-Yau three-folds arising from toric geometry and vector bundles on these manifolds. We focus on a simple class of 101 such three-folds with smooth ambient spaces, on which we perform an exhaustive scan and find all positive monad bundles with SU(N), N=3,4,5 structure groups, subject to the heterotic anomaly cancellation constraint. We find that anomaly-free positive monads exist on only 11 of these toric three-folds with a total number of bundles of about 2000. Only 21 of these models, all of them on three-folds realizable as hypersurfaces in products of projective spaces, allow for three families of quarks and leptons. We also perform a preliminary scan over the much larger class of semi-positive monads which leads to about 44000 bundles with 280 of them satisfying the three-family constraint. These 280 models provide a starting point for heterotic model building based on toric three-folds.

Probing the Space of Toric Quiver Theories

We demonstrate a practical and efficient method for generating toric Calabi-Yau quiver theories, applicable to both D3 and M2 brane world-volume physics. A new analytic method is presented at low order parametres and an algorithm for the general case is developed which has polynomial complexity in the number of edges in the quiver. Using this algorithm, carefully implemented, we classify the quiver diagram and assign possible superpotentials for various small values of the number of edges and nodes. We examine some preliminary statistics on this space of toric quiver theories.

Yukawa Couplings in Heterotic Compactification

Our methodology covers all of, though is not restricted to, the recently classified positive monads over favourable complete intersection Calabi-Yau three-folds. Since the algorithm is based on manipulating polynomials it can be easily implemented on a computer. This makes the automated investigation of Yukawa couplings for large classes of smooth heterotic compactifications a viable possibility.

An Abundance of Heterotic Vacua

We explicitly construct the largest dataset to date of heterotic vacua arising from stable vector bundles on Calabi-Yau threefolds. Focusing on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds with spectral cover bundles, we show that the number of heterotic models with non-zero number of generations is finite. We classify these models according to the complex base of their Calabi-Yau threefold and to the unification gauge group that they preserve in four dimensions. This database of the order of $10^7$ models, which includes potential Standard Model candidates, is subjected to some preliminary statistical analyses. The additional constraint that there should be three net generations of particles gives a dramatic reduction of the number of vacua.

A New Method for Finding Vacua in String Phenomenology

We present an algorithmic method to find all of the vacua of any given string-phenomenological system in a huge class. In particular, this paper reviews and then extends hep-th/0606122 to include various non-perturbative effects. These include gaugino condensation and instantonic contributions to the superpotential.

Algorithmic Algebraic Geometry and Flux Vacua

We develop a new and efficient method to systematically analyse four dimensional effective supergravities which descend from flux compactifications. The issue of finding vacua of such systems, both supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric, is mapped into a problem in computational algebraic geometry. Using recent developments in computer algebra, the problem can then be rapidly dealt with in a completely algorithmic fashion. Two main results are (1) a procedure for calculating constraints which the flux parameters must satisfy in these models if any given type of vacuum is to exist; (2) a stepwise process for finding all of the isolated vacua of such systems and their physical properties. We illustrate our discussion with several concrete examples, some of which have eluded conventional methods so far.

Counting BPS Operators in Gauge Theories: Quivers, Syzygies and Plethystics

We develop a systematic and efficient method of counting single-trace and multi-trace BPS operators with two supercharges, for world-volume gauge theories of $N$ D-brane probes for both $N \to \infty$ and finite $N$. The techniques are applicable to generic singularities, orbifold, toric, non-toric, complete intersections, et cetera, even to geometries whose precise field theory duals are not yet known. The so-called ``Plethystic Exponential'' provides a simple bridge between (1) the defining equation of the Calabi-Yau, (2) the generating function of single-trace BPS operators and (3) the generating function of multi-trace operators. Mathematically, fascinating and intricate inter-relations between gauge theory, algebraic geometry, combinatorics and number theory exhibit themselves in the form of plethystics and syzygies.

The Exact MSSM Spectrum from String Theory

We show the existence of realistic vacua in string theory whose observable sector has exactly the matter content of the MSSM. This is achieved by compactifying the E_8 x E_8 heterotic superstring on a smooth Calabi-Yau threefold with an SU(4) gauge instanton and a Z_3 x Z_3 Wilson line. Specifically, the observable sector is N=1 supersymmetric with gauge group SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y x U(1)_{B-L}, three families of quarks and leptons, each family with a right-handed neutrino, and one Higgs-Higgs conjugate pair. Importantly, there are no extra vector-like pairs and no exotic matter in the zero mode spectrum. There are, in addition, 6 geometric moduli and 13 gauge instanton moduli in the observable sector. The holomorphic SU(4) vector bundle of the observable sector is slope-stable.

Vacuum Geometry and the Search for New Physics

We propose a new guiding principle for phenomenology: special geometry in the vacuum space. New algorithmic methods which efficiently compute geometric properties of the vacuum space of N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories are described. We illustrate the technique on subsectors of the MSSM. The fragility of geometric structure that we find in the moduli space motivates phenomenologically realistic deformations of the superpotential, while arguing against others. Special geometry in the vacuum may therefore signal the presence of string physics underlying the low-energy effective theory.

Yukawa Couplings in Heterotic Standard Models

In this paper, we present a formalism for computing the Yukawa couplings in heterotic standard models. This is accomplished by calculating the relevant triple products of cohomology groups, leading to terms proportional to Q*H*u, Q*Hbar*d, L*H*nu and L*Hbar*e in the low energy superpotential. These interactions are subject to two very restrictive selection rules arising from the geometry of the Calabi-Yau manifold. We apply our formalism to the "minimal" heterotic standard model whose observable sector matter spectrum is exactly that of the MSSM. The non-vanishing Yukawa interactions are explicitly computed in this context. These interactions exhibit a texture rendering one out of the three quark/lepton families naturally light.

A Standard Model from the E8 x E8 Heterotic Superstring

In a previous paper, we introduced a heterotic standard model and discussed its basic properties. This vacuum has the spectrum of the MSSM with one additional pair of Higgs-Higgs conjugate fields and a small number of uncharged moduli. In this paper, the requisite vector bundles are formulated; specifically, stable, holomorphic bundles with structure group SU(N) on smooth Calabi-Yau threefolds with Z_3 x Z_3 fundamental group. A method for computing bundle cohomology is presented and used to evaluate the cohomology groups of the standard model bundles. It is shown how to determine the Z_3 x Z_3 action on these groups. Finally, using an explicit method of "doublet-triplet splitting", the low-energy particle spectrum is computed.

Heterotic Standard Model Moduli

In previous papers, we introduced a heterotic standard model and discussed its basic properties. The Calabi-Yau threefold has, generically, three Kahler and three complex structure moduli. The observable sector of this vacuum has the spectrum of the MSSM with one additional pair of Higgs-Higgs conjugate fields. The hidden sector has no charged matter in the strongly coupled string and only minimal matter for weak coupling. Additionally, the spectrum of both sectors will contain vector bundle moduli. The exact number of such moduli was conjectured to be small, but was not explicitly computed. In this paper, we rectify this and present a formalism for computing the number of vector bundle moduli. Using this formalism, the number of moduli in both the observable and strongly coupled hidden sectors is explicitly calculated.

Moduli Dependent mu-Terms in a Heterotic Standard Model

In this paper, we present a formalism for computing the non-vanishing Higgs mu-terms in a heterotic standard model. This is accomplished by calculating the cubic product of the cohomology groups associated with the vector bundle moduli (phi), Higgs (H) and Higgs conjugate (Hbar) superfields. This leads to terms proportional to phi H Hbar in the low energy superpotential which, for non-zero moduli expectation values, generate moduli dependent mu-terms of the form <phi> H Hbar. It is found that these interactions are subject to two very restrictive selection rules, each arising from a Leray spectral sequence, which greatly reduce the number of moduli that can couple to Higgs-Higgs conjugate fields. We apply our formalism to a specific heterotic standard model vacuum. The non-vanishing cubic interactions phi H Hbar are explicitly computed in this context and shown to contain only four of the nineteen vector bundle moduli.

Chaotic Duality in String Theory

We investigate the general features of renormalization group flows near superconformal fixed points of four dimensional N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories with gravity duals. The gauge theories we study arise as the world-volume theory on a set of D-branes at a Calabi-Yau singularity where a del Pezzo surface shrinks to zero size. Based mainly on field theory analysis, we find evidence that such flows are often chaotic and contain exotic features such as duality walls. For a gauge theory where the del Pezzo is the Hirzebruch zero surface, the dependence of the duality wall height on the couplings at some point in the cascade has a self-similar fractal structure. For a gauge theory dual to CP^2 blown up at a point, we find periodic and quasi-periodic behavior for the gauge theory couplings that does not violate the a-conjecture. Finally, we construct supergravity duals for these del Pezzos that match our field theory beta functions.

Moduli Dependent Spectra of Heterotic Compactifications

Explicit methods are presented for computing the cohomology of stable, holomorphic vector bundles on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds. The complete particle spectrum of the low-energy, four-dimensional theory is specified by the dimensions of specific cohomology groups. The spectrum is shown to depend on the choice of vector bundle moduli, jumping up from a generic minimal result to attain many higher values on subspaces of co-dimension one or higher in the moduli space. An explicit example is presented within the context of a heterotic vacuum corresponding to an SU(5) GUT in four-dimensions.

On Correspondences Between Toric Singularities and (p,q)-webs

We study four-dimensional N=1 gauge theories which arise from D3-brane probes of toric Calabi-Yau threefolds. There are some standing paradoxes in the literature regarding relations among (p,q)-webs, toric diagrams and various phases of the gauge theories, we resolve them by proposing and carefully distinguishing between two kinds of (p,q)-webs: toric and quiver (p,q)-webs. The former has a one to one correspondence with the toric diagram while the latter can correspond to multiple gauge theories. The key reason for this ambiguity is that a given quiver (p,q)-web can not capture non-chiral matter fields in the gauge theory. To support our claim we analyse families of theories emerging from partial resolution of Abelian orbifolds using the Inverse Algorithm of hep-th/0003085 as well as (p,q)-web techniques. We present complex inter-relations among these theories by Higgsing, blowups and brane splittings. We also point out subtleties involved in the ordering of legs in the (p,q) diagram.

Multi-Trace Superpotentials vs. Matrix Models

We consider N = 1 supersymmetric U(N) field theories in four dimensions with adjoint chiral matter and a multi-trace tree-level superpotential. We show that the computation of the effective action as a function of the glueball superfield localizes to computing matrix integrals. Unlike the single-trace case, holomorphy and symmetries do not forbid non-planar contributions. Nevertheless, only a special subset of the planar diagrams contributes to the exact result. Some of the data of this subset can be computed from the large-N limit of an associated multi-trace Matrix model. However, the prescription differs in important respects from that of Dijkgraaf and Vafa for single-trace superpotentials in that the field theory effective action is not the derivative of a multi-trace matrix model free energy. The basic subtlety involves the correct identification of the field theory glueball as a variable in the Matrix model, as we show via an auxiliary construction involving a single-trace matrix model with additional singlet fields which are integrated out to compute the multi-trace results. Along the way we also describe a general technique for computing the large-N limits of multi-trace Matrix models and raise the challenge of finding the field theories whose effective actions they may compute. Since our models can be treated as N = 1 deformations of pure N =2 gauge theory, we show that the effective superpotential that we compute also follows from the N = 2 Seiberg-Witten solution. Finally, we observe an interesting connection between multi-trace local theories and non-local field theory.

Discrete Torsion, Covering Groups and Quiver Diagrams

Without recourse to the sophisticated machinery of twisted group algebras, projective character tables and explicit values of 2-cocycles, we here present a simple algorithm to study the gauge theory data of D-brane probes on a generic orbifold G with discrete torsion turned on. We show in particular that the gauge theory can be obtained with the knowledge of no more than the ordinary character tables of G and its covering group G*. Subsequently we present the quiver diagrams of certain illustrative examples of SU(3)-orbifolds which have non-trivial Schur Multipliers. The paper serves as a companion to our earlier work (arXiv:hep-th/0010023) and aims to initiate a systematic and computationally convenient study of discrete torsion.

Phase Structure of D-brane Gauge Theories and Toric Duality

Harnessing the unimodular degree of freedom in the definition of any toric diagram, we present a method of constructing inequivalent gauge theories which are world-volume theories of D-branes probing the same toric singularity. These theories are various phases in partial resolution of Abelian orbifolds. As examples, two phases are constructed for both the zeroth Hirzebruch and the second del Pezzo surfaces. We show that such a phenomenon is a special case of ``Toric Duality'' proposed in hep-th/0003085. Furthermore, we investigate the general conditions that distinguish these different gauge theories with the same (toric) moduli space.

D-Brane Gauge Theories from Toric Singularities and Toric Duality

As illustrative examples, we tabulate the matter content and superpotential for a D-brane living on the toric del Pezzo surfaces as well as the zeroth Hirzebruch surface. Moreover, we discuss the non-uniqueness of the general problem and present examples of vastly different theories whose moduli spaces are described by the same toric data. Our methods provide new tools for calculating gauge theories which flow to the same universality class in the IR. We shall call it ``Toric Duality.''

Discrete Torsion, Non-Abelian Orbifolds and the Schur Multiplier

Armed with the explicit computation of Schur Multipliers, we offer a classification of SU(n) orbifolds for n = 2,3,4 which permit the turning on of discrete torsion. This is in response to the host of activity lately in vogue on the application of discrete torsion to D-brane orbifold theories. As a by-product, we find a hitherto unknown class of N = 1 orbifolds with non-cyclic discrete torsion group. Furthermore, we supplement the status quo ante by investigating a first example of a non-Abelian orbifold admitting discrete torsion, namely the ordinary dihedral group as a subgroup of SU(3).
