Symmetry Mitosis and Hasse Diagram Diamonds: A Note on Brane Configurations with $\mathrm{ON}^{0}$ Planes

This letter considers 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ (unitary-)orthosymplectic quiver gauge theories originating from Type IIA and Type IIB brane systems with $\mathrm{ON}^0$ planes. Such theories lie outside the scope of present combinatorial techniques for Coulomb branch symmetry and symplectic stratification. It turns out that the correct prescription involves `symmetry mitosis': a common subset of nodes in two linear balanced chains source \emph{two} factors of a Coulomb branch global symmetry instead of one; the correct Coulomb branch Hasse diagram is obtained by a `doubling' procedure on that computed by naive quiver subtraction. Input from 6d SQFTs and little string theories allows for the construction of various `mitotic' magnetic quivers. The full Higgs branch Hasse diagram of minimal $(E_6,E_6)$ conformal matter is given. Additionally, a new Type I$'$ brane system using eight full D8 branes, negatively charged D6 branes, and $\mathrm{ON}^0$ planes is found corresponding to a product of $\mathrm{Spin}(32)$ instantons on $\mathbb C^2$. The corresponding 6d theory uses $\mathrm{Sp}(-1)$ gauge nodes which have the interpretation of bi-spinor matter of $\mathrm{O}(a)$ and $\mathrm{O}(12-a)$ for $a=0,1,\cdots,12$.

The Hasse Diagram of the Moduli Space of Instantons

Hasse diagrams (or phase diagrams) for moduli spaces of supersymmetric field theories have been intensively studied in recent years, and many tools to compute them have been developed. The moduli space of instantons, despite being well studied, has proven difficult to deal with. In this note we explore the Hasse diagram of this moduli space from several perspectives -- using the partial Higgs mechanism, using brane systems and using quiver subtraction -- having to refine previously developed techniques. In particular we introduce the new concept of decorated quiver, which allows to deal with a large class of unitary quivers, including those with adjoint matter.

Coulomb Branch Global Symmetry and Quiver Addition

To date, the best effort made to simply determine the Coulomb branch global symmetry of a theory from a $3d$ $\mathcal{N}=4$ quiver is by applying an algorithm based on its balanced gauge nodes. This often gives the full global symmetry, but there have been many cases seen where it instead gives only a subgroup. This paper presents a method for constructing several families of $3d$ $\mathcal{N}=4$ unitary quivers where the true global symmetry is enhanced from that predicted by the balance algorithm, motivated by the study of Coulomb branch Hasse diagrams. This provides a rich list of examples on which to test improved algorithms for unfailingly identifying the Coulomb branch global symmetry from a quiver.

Higgs Branches of U/SU Quivers via Brane Locking

We solve a long standing problem on the computation of the Higgs branch $\mathcal{H}$ of linear quivers with 8 supercharges and with both unitary and special unitary gauge nodes. The solution uses the concept of magnetic quivers, where components of $\mathcal{H}$ are described as 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ Coulomb branches. When the starting quiver is good, there is a single component in $\mathcal{H}$ and the magnetic quiver is a 3d mirror. The magnetic quivers are obtained from studying the brane web for an auxiliary 5d theory (with only special unitary gauge groups), constrained by a new notion called brane locking, where some branes are required to move together. We view this as a computational tool rather than an operation in 5d. A detailed algorithm is given, and implemented in a code available for download.

Some Open Questions in Quiver Gauge Theory

Quivers, gauge theories and singular geometries are of great interest in both mathematics and physics. In this note, we collect a few open questions which have arisen in various recent works at the intersection between gauge theories, representation theory, and algebraic geometry. The questions originate from the study of supersymmetric gauge theories in different dimensions with different supersymmetries. Although these constitute merely the tip of a vast iceberg, we hope this guide can give a hint of possible directions in future research. This is an invited contribution to a special volume of Proyecciones, E. Gasparim, Ed., and it is the hope that the questions are specific enough for research projects aimed at PhD students.

Brane Webs and Magnetic Quivers for SQCD

It is widely considered that the classical Higgs branch of 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SQCD is a well understood object. However there is no satisfactory understanding of its structure. There are two complications: (1) the Higgs branch chiral ring contains nilpotent elements, as can easily be checked in the case of $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ with 1 flavour. (2) the Higgs branch as a geometric space can in general be decomposed into two cones with nontrivial intersection, the baryonic and mesonic branches. To study the second point in detail we use the recently developed tool of magnetic quivers for five-brane webs, using the fact that the classical Higgs branch for theories with 8 supercharges does not change through dimensional reduction. We compare this approach with the computation of the hyper-Kähler quotient using Hilbert series techniques, finding perfect agreement if nilpotent operators are eliminated by the computation of a so called radical. We study the nature of the nilpotent operators and give conjectures for the Hilbert series of the full Higgs branch, giving new insights into the vacuum structure of 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SQCD. In addition we demonstrate the power of the magnetic quiver technique, as it allows us to identify the decomposition into cones, and provides us with the global symmetries of the theory, as a simple alternative to the techniques that were used to date.

Magnetic Quivers from Brane Webs with O5 Planes

Magnetic quivers have led to significant progress in the understanding of gauge theories with 8 supercharges at UV fixed points. For a given low-energy gauge theory realised via a Type II brane construction, there exist magnetic quivers for the Higgs branches at finite and infinite gauge coupling. Comparing these moduli spaces allows to study the non-perturbative effects when transitioning to the fixed point. For 5d $\mathcal{N}=1$ SQCD, 5-brane webs have been an important tool for deriving magnetic quivers. In this work, the emphasis is placed on 5-brane webs with orientifold 5-planes which give rise to 5d theories with orthogonal or symplectic gauge groups. For this set-up, the magnetic quiver prescription is derived and contrasted against a unitary magnetic quiver description extracted from an O$7^-$ construction. Further validation is achieved by a derivation of the associated Hasse diagrams. An important class of families considered are the orthogonal exceptional $E_n$ families ($-\infty < n \leq 8$), realised as infinite coupling Higgs branches of $\mathrm{Sp}(k)$ gauge theories with fundamental matter. In particular, the moduli spaces are realised by a novel type of magnetic quivers, called unitary-orthosymplectic quivers.

Magnetic Quivers, Higgs Branches, and 6d N=(1,0) Theories -- Orthogonal and Symplectic Gauge Groups

M5 branes on a D-type ALE singularity display various phenomena that introduce additional massless degrees of freedom. The M5 branes are known to fractionate on a D-type singularity. Whenever two fractional M5 branes coincide, tensionless strings arise. Therefore, these systems do not admit a low-energy Lagrangian description. Focusing on the 6-dimensional N=(1,0) world-volume theories on the M5 branes, the vacuum moduli space has two branches were either the scalar fields in the tensor multiplet or the scalars in the hypermultiplets acquire a non-trivial vacuum expectation value. As suggested in previous work, the Higgs branch may change drastically whenever a BPS-string becomes tensionless. Recently, magnetic quivers have been introduced with the aim to capture all Higgs branches over any point of the tensor branch. In this paper, the formalism is extended to Type IIA brane configurations involving O6 planes. Since the 6d N=(1,0) theories are composed of orthosymplectic gauge groups, the derivation rules for the magnetic quiver in the presence of O6 planes have to be conjectured. This is achieved by analysing the 6d theories for a single M5 brane on a D-type singularity and deriving the magnetic quivers for the finite and infinite gauge coupling Higgs branch from a brane configuration. The validity of the proposed derivation rules is underpinned by deriving the associated Hasse diagram. For multiple M5 branes, the approach of this paper provides magnetic quivers for all Higgs branches over any point of the tensor branch. In particular, an interesting infinite gauge coupling transition is found that is related to the SO(8) non-Higgsable cluster.

S-fold magnetic quivers

Magnetic quivers and Hasse diagrams for Higgs branches of rank $r$ 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs arising from $\mathbb{Z}_{\ell}$ $\mathcal{S}$-fold constructions are discussed. The magnetic quivers are derived using three different methods: 1) Using clues like dimension, global symmetry, and the folding parameter $\ell$ to guess the magnetic quiver. 2) From 6d $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ SCFTs as UV completions of 5d marginal theories, and specific FI deformations on their magnetic quiver, which is further folded by $\mathbb{Z}_{\ell}$. 3) From T-duality of Type IIA brane systems of 6d $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ SCFTs and explicit mass deformation of the resulting brane web followed by $\mathbb{Z}_{\ell}$ folding. A choice of the ungauging scheme, either on a long node or on a short node, yields two different moduli spaces related by an orbifold action, thus suggesting a larger set of SCFTs in four dimensions than previously expected.

Quiver Theories and Hilbert Series of Classical Slodowy Intersections

We build on previous studies of the Higgs and Coulomb branches of SUSY quiver theories having 8 supercharges, including $3d~{\cal N}=4$, and Classical gauge groups. The vacuum moduli spaces of many such theories can be parameterised by pairs of nilpotent orbits of Classical Lie algebras; they are transverse to one orbit and intersect the closure of the second. We refer to these transverse spaces as Slodowy intersections. They embrace reduced single instanton moduli spaces, nilpotent orbits, Kraft-Procesi transitions and Slodowy slices, as well as other types. We show how quiver subtractions, between multi-flavoured unitary or ortho-symplectic quivers, can be used to find a complete set of Higgs branch constructions for the Slodowy intersections of any Classical group. We discuss the relationships between the Higgs and Coulomb branches of these quivers and $T_σ^ρ$ theories in the context of $3d$ mirror symmetry, including problematic aspects of Coulomb branch constructions from ortho-symplectic quivers. We review Coulomb and Higgs branch constructions for a subset of Slodowy intersections from multi-flavoured Dynkin diagram quivers. We tabulate Hilbert series and Highest Weight Generating functions for Slodowy intersections of Classical algebras up to rank 4. The results are confirmed by direct calculation of Hilbert series from a localisation formula for normal Slodowy intersections that is related to the Hall Littlewood polynomials.

The Higgs Mechanism -- Hasse Diagrams for Symplectic Singularities

We explore the geometrical structure of Higgs branches of quantum field theories with 8 supercharges in 3, 4, 5 and 6 dimensions. They are symplectic singularities, and as such admit a decomposition (or foliation) into so-called symplectic leaves, which are related to each other by transverse slices. We identify this foliation with the pattern of partial Higgs mechanism of the theory and, using brane systems and recently introduced notions of magnetic quivers and quiver subtraction, we formalise the rules to obtain the Hasse diagram which encodes the structure of the foliation. While the unbroken gauge symmetry and the number of flat directions are obtainable by classical field theory analysis for Lagrangian theories, our approach allows us to characterise the geometry of the Higgs branch by a Hasse diagram with symplectic leaves and transverse slices, thus refining the analysis and extending it to non-Lagrangian theories. Most of the Hasse diagrams we obtain extend beyond the cases of nilpotent orbit closures known in the mathematics literature. The geometric analysis developed in this paper is applied to Higgs branches of several Lagrangian gauge theories, Argyres-Douglas theories, five dimensional SQCD theories at the conformal fixed point, and six dimensional SCFTs.

A tale of two cones: the Higgs Branch of Sp(n) theories with 2n flavours

The purpose of this short note is to highlight a particular phenomenon which concerns the Higgs branch of a certain family of 4d N = 2 theories with SO(2N) flavour symmetry. By studying the Higgs branch as an algebraic variety through Hilbert series techniques we find that it is not a single hyperkahler cone but rather the union of two cones with intersection a hyperkahler subvariety which we specify. This remarkable phenomenon is not only interesting per se but plays a crucial role in understanding the structure of all Higgs branches that are generated by mesons.

Branes and the Kraft-Procesi Transition

The Coulomb and Higgs branches of certain 3d N=4 gauge theories can be understood as closures of nilpotent orbits. Recently, a new theorem by Namikawa suggests that this is the simplest possible case, thus giving this class a special role. In this note we use branes to reproduce the mathematical work by Kraft and Procesi. It studies the classification of all nilpotent orbits for classical groups and it characterizes an inclusion relation via minimal singularities. We show how these minimal singularities arise naturally in the Type IIB superstring embedding of the 3d A-type theories. The Higgs mechanism can be used to remove the minimal singularity, corresponding to a transition in the brane configuration that induces a new effective 3d theory. This reproduces the Kraft-Procesi results, endowing the family of gauge theories with a new underlying structure. We provide an efficient procedure for computing such brane transitions.

Coulomb branches for rank 2 gauge groups in 3d N=4 gauge theories

The Coulomb branch of 3-dimensional N=4 gauge theories is the space of bare and dressed BPS monopole operators. We utilise the conformal dimension to define a fan which, upon intersection with the weight lattice of a GNO-dual group, gives rise to a collection of semi-groups. It turns out that the unique Hilbert bases of these semi-groups are a sufficient, finite set of monopole operators which generate the entire chiral ring. Moreover, the knowledge of the properties of the minimal generators is enough to compute the Hilbert series explicitly. The techniques of this paper allow an efficient evaluation of the Hilbert series for general rank gauge groups. As an application, we provide various examples for all rank two gauge groups to demonstrate the novel interpretation.

Chiral theories of class S

We study a class of four-dimensional N=1 superconformal field theories obtained from the six-dimensional (1,0) theory, on M5-branes on C^2/Z_k orbifold singularity, compactified on a Riemann surface. This produces various quiver gauge theories whose matter contents are chiral. We classify the building blocks associated to pairs-of-pants, and study the gauging of them as the gluing of punctures. The Riemann surface picture makes the duality invariance of the resulting quiver theories manifest: the theories associated to the same Riemann surface flow to the same nontrivial infrared fixed point. We explicitly check this from the 't Hooft anomalies of the global symmetries and central charges.

Consistency and Derangements in Brane Tilings

Brane tilings describe Lagrangians (vector multiplets, chiral multiplets, and the superpotential) of four dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theories. These theories, written in terms of a bipartite graph on a torus, correspond to worldvolume theories on $N$ D$3$-branes probing a toric Calabi-Yau threefold singularity. A pair of permutations compactly encapsulates the data necessary to specify a brane tiling. We show that geometric consistency for brane tilings, which ensures that the corresponding quantum field theories are well behaved, imposes constraints on the pair of permutations, restricting certain products constructed from the pair to have no one-cycles. Permutations without one-cycles are known as derangements. We illustrate this formulation of consistency with known brane tilings. Counting formulas for consistent brane tilings with an arbitrary number of chiral bifundamental fields are written down in terms of delta functions over symmetric groups.

Construction and Deconstruction of Single Instanton Hilbert Series

Many methods exist for the construction of the Hilbert series describing the moduli spaces of instantons. We explore some of the underlying group theoretic relationships between these various constructions, including those based on the Coulomb branches and Higgs branches of SUSY quiver gauge theories, as well as those based on generating functions derivable from the Weyl Character Formula. We show how the character description of the reduced single instanton moduli space of any Classical or Exceptional group can be deconstructed faithfully in terms of characters or modified Hall-Littlewood polynomials of its regular semi-simple subgroups. We derive and utilise Highest Weight Generating functions, both for the characters of Classical or Exceptional groups and for the Hall-Littlewood polynomials of unitary groups. We illustrate how the root space data encoded in extended Dynkin diagrams corresponds to relationships between the Coulomb branches of quiver gauge theories for instanton moduli spaces and those for T(SU(N)) moduli spaces.

Hilbert Series for Theories with Aharony Duals

The algebraic structure of moduli spaces of 3d N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories is studied by computing the Hilbert series which is a generating function that counts gauge invariant operators in the chiral ring. These U(N_c) theories with N_f flavors have Aharony duals and their moduli spaces receive contributions from both mesonic and monopole operators. In order to compute the Hilbert series, recently developed techniques for Coulomb branch Hilbert series in 3d N=4 are extended to 3d N=2. The Hilbert series computation leads to a general expression of the algebraic variety which represents the moduli space of the U(N_c) theory with N_f flavors and its Aharony dual theory. A detailed analysis of the moduli space is given, including an analysis of the various components of the moduli space.

Complete Graphs, Hilbert Series, and the Higgs branch of the 4d N=2 $(A_n,A_m)$ SCFT's

The strongly interacting 4d N=2 SCFT's of type $(A_n,A_m)$ are the simplest examples of models in the $(G,G^\prime)$ class introduced by Cecotti, Neitzke, and Vafa in arXiv:1006.3435. These systems have a known 3d N=4 mirror only if $h(A_n)$ divides $h(A_m)$, where $h$ is the Coxeter number. By 4d/2d correspondence, we show that in this case these systems have a nontrivial global flavor symmetry group and, therefore, a non-trivial Higgs branch. As an application of the methods of arXiv:1309.2657, we then compute the refined Hilbert series of the Coulomb branch of the 3d mirror for the simplest models in the series. This equals the refined Hilbert series of the Higgs branch of the $(A_n,A_m)$ SCFT, providing interesting information about the Higgs branch of these non-lagrangian theories.

Coulomb Branch and The Moduli Space of Instantons

The moduli space of instantons on C^2 for any simple gauge group is studied using the Coulomb branch of N=4 gauge theories in three dimensions. For a given simple group G, the Hilbert series of such an instanton moduli space is computed from the Coulomb branch of the quiver given by the over-extended Dynkin diagram of G. The computation includes the cases of non-simply-laced gauge groups G, complementing the ADHM constructions which are not available for exceptional gauge groups. Even though the Lagrangian description for non-simply laced Dynkin diagrams is not currently known, the prescription for computing the Coulomb branch Hilbert series of such diagrams is very simple. For instanton numbers one and two, the results are in agreement with previous works. New results and general features for the moduli spaces of three and higher instanton numbers are reported and discussed in detail.

Coulomb branch Hilbert series and Hall-Littlewood polynomials

There has been a recent progress in understanding the chiral ring of 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ superconformal gauge theories by explicitly constructing an exact generating function (Hilbert series) counting BPS operators on the Coulomb branch. In this paper we introduce Coulomb branch Hilbert series in the presence of background magnetic charges for flavor symmetries, which are useful for computing the Hilbert series of more general theories through gluing techniques. We find a simple formula of the Hilbert series with background magnetic charges for $T_ρ(G)$ theories in terms of Hall-Littlewood polynomials. Here $G$ is a classical group and $ρ$ is a certain partition related to the dual group of $G$. The Hilbert series for vanishing background magnetic charges show that Coulomb branches of $T_ρ(G)$ theories are complete intersections. We also demonstrate that mirror symmetry maps background magnetic charges to baryonic charges.

Coulomb branch Hilbert series and Three Dimensional Sicilian Theories

We evaluate the Coulomb branch Hilbert series of mirrors of three dimensional Sicilian theories, which arise from compactifying the $6d$ $(2,0)$ theory with symmetry $G$ on a circle times a Riemann surface with punctures. We obtain our result by gluing together the Hilbert series for building blocks $T_{\mathbfρ}(G)$, where $\mathbfρ$ is a certain partition related to the dual group of $G$, which we evaluated in a previous paper. The result is expressed in terms of a class of symmetric functions, the Hall-Littlewood polynomials. As expected from mirror symmetry, our results agree at genus zero with the superconformal index prediction for the Higgs branch Hilbert series of the Sicilian theories and extend it to higher genus. In the $A_1$ case at genus zero, we also evaluate the Coulomb branch Hilbert series of the Sicilian theory itself, showing that it only depends on the number of external legs.

Highest Weight Generating Functions for Hilbert Series

We develop a new method for representing Hilbert series based on the highest weight Dynkin labels of their underlying symmetry groups. The method draws on plethystic functions and character generating functions along with Weyl integration. We give explicit examples showing how the use of such highest weight generating functions (HWGs) permits an efficient encoding and analysis of the Hilbert series of the vacuum moduli spaces of classical and exceptional SQCD theories and also of the moduli spaces of instantons. We identify how the HWGs of gauge invariant operators of a selection of classical and exceptional SQCD theories result from the interaction under symmetrisation between a product group and the invariant tensors of its gauge group. In order to calculate HWGs, we derive and tabulate character generating functions for low rank groups by a variety of methods, including a general character generating function, based on the Weyl Character Formula, for any classical or exceptional group.

Hilbert Series and Moduli Spaces of k U(N) Vortices

We study the moduli spaces of k U(N) vortices which are realized by the Higgs branch of a U(k) supersymmetric gauge theory. The theory has 4 supercharges and lives on k D1-branes in a N D3- and NS5-brane background. We realize the vortex moduli space as a C* projection of the vortex master space. The Hilbert series is calculated in order to characterize the algebraic structure of the vortex master space and to identify the precise C* projection. As a result, we are able to fully classify the moduli spaces up to 3 vortices.

Mass-deformed Brane Tilings

We study renormalization group flows among N=1 SCFTs realized on the worldvolume of D3-branes probing toric Calabi-Yau singularities, thus admitting a brane tiling description. The flows are triggered by masses for adjoint or vector-like pairs of bifundamentals and are generalizations of the Klebanov-Witten construction of the N=1 theory for the conifold starting from the N=2 theory for the C^2/Z_2 orbifold. In order to preserve the toric condition pairs of masses with opposite signs have to be switched on. We offer a geometric interpretation of the flows as complex deformations of the Calabi-Yau singularity preserving the toric condition. For orbifolds, we support this interpretation by an explicit string amplitude computation of the gauge invariant mass terms generated by imaginary self-dual 3-form fluxes in the twisted sector. In agreement with the holographic a-theorem, the volume of the Sasaki-Einstein 5-base of the Calabi-Yau cone always increases along the flow.

Mirror Symmetry in Three Dimensions via Gauged Linear Quivers

Starting from mirror pairs consisting only of linear (framed A-type) quivers, we demonstrate that a wide class of three-dimensional quiver gauge theories with N=4 supersymmetry and their mirror duals can be obtained by suitably gauging flavor symmetries. Infinite families of mirror pairs including various quivers of D and E-type and their affine extensions, star-shaped quivers, and quivers with symplectic gauge groups may be generated in this fashion. We present two different computational strategies to perform the aforementioned gauging procedure - one of them involves N=2* classical parameter space description, while the other one uses partition functions of the N=4 theories on S^3. The partition function, in particular, turns out to be an extremely efficient tool for implementing this gauging procedure as it readily generalizes to arbitrary size of the quiver and arbitrary rank of the gauge group at each node. For most examples of mirror pairs obtained via this procedure, we perform additional checks of mirror symmetry using the Hilbert series.

Monopole operators and Hilbert series of Coulomb branches of 3d N = 4 gauge theories

This paper addresses a long standing problem - to identify the chiral ring and moduli space (i.e. as an algebraic variety) on the Coulomb branch of an N = 4 superconformal field theory in 2+1 dimensions. Previous techniques involved a computation of the metric on the moduli space and/or mirror symmetry. These methods are limited to sufficiently small moduli spaces, with enough symmetry, or to Higgs branches of sufficiently small gauge theories. We introduce a simple formula for the Hilbert series of the Coulomb branch, which applies to any good or ugly three-dimensional N = 4 gauge theory. The formula counts monopole operators which are dressed by classical operators, the Casimir invariants of the residual gauge group that is left unbroken by the magnetic flux. We apply our formula to several classes of gauge theories. Along the way we make various tests of mirror symmetry, successfully comparing the Hilbert series of the Coulomb branch with the Hilbert series of the Higgs branch of the mirror theory.

T^σ_ρ(G) Theories and Their Hilbert Series

We give an explicit formula for the Higgs and Coulomb branch Hilbert series for the class of 3d N=4 superconformal gauge theories T^σ_ρ(G) corresponding to a set of D3 branes ending on NS5 and D5-branes, with or without O3 planes. Here G is a classical group, σis a partition of G and ρa partition of the dual group G^\vee. In deriving such a formula we make use of the recently discovered formula for the Hilbert series of the quantum Coulomb branch of N=4 superconformal theories. The result can be expressed in terms of a generalization of a class of symmetric functions, the Hall-Littlewood polynomials, and can be interpreted in mathematical language in terms of localization. We mainly consider the case G=SU(N) but some interesting results are also given for orthogonal and symplectic groups.

Hilbert Series for Moduli Spaces of Instantons on C^2/Z_n

We study chiral gauge-invariant operators on moduli spaces of G instantons for any classical group G on A-type ALE spaces using Hilbert Series (HS). Moduli spaces of instantons on an ALE space can be realized as Higgs branches of certain quiver gauge theories which appear as world-volume theories on Dp branes in a Dp-D(p+4) system with the D(p+4) branes (with or without O(p+4) planes) wrapping the ALE space. We study in detail a list of quiver gauge theories which are related to G-instantons of arbitrary ranks and instanton numbers on a generic A_{n-1} ALE space and discuss the corresponding brane configurations. For a large class of theories, we explicitly compute the Higgs branch HS which reveals various algebraic/geometric aspects of the moduli space such as the dimension of the space, generators of the moduli space and relations connecting them. In a large number of examples involving lower rank instantons, we demonstrate that HS for equivalent instantons of isomorphic gauge groups but very different quiver descriptions do indeed agree, as expected.

Superconformal Block Quivers, Duality Trees and Diophantine Equations

We generalize previous results on N=1, (3+1)-dimensional superconformal block quiver gauge theories. It is known that the necessary conditions for a theory to be superconformal, i.e. that the beta and gamma functions vanish in addition to anomaly cancellation, translate to a Diophantine equation in terms of the quiver data. We re-derive results for low block numbers revealing an new intriguing algebraic structure underlying a class of possible superconformal fixed points of such theories. After explicitly computing the five block case Diophantine equation, we use this structure to reorganize the result in a form that can be applied to arbitrary block numbers. We argue that these theories can be thought of as vectors in the root system of the corresponding quiver and superconformality conditions are shown to associate them to certain subsets of imaginary roots. These methods also allow for an interpretation of Seiberg duality as the action of the affine Weyl group on the root lattice.

Brane Tilings and Reflexive Polygons

Reflexive polygons have attracted great interest both in mathematics and in physics. This paper discusses a new aspect of the existing study in the context of quiver gauge theories. These theories are 4d supersymmetric worldvolume theories of D3 branes with toric Calabi-Yau moduli spaces that are conveniently described with brane tilings. We find all 30 theories corresponding to the 16 reflexive polygons, some of the theories being toric (Seiberg) dual to each other. The mesonic generators of the moduli spaces are identified through the Hilbert series. It is shown that the lattice of generators is the dual reflexive polygon of the toric diagram. Thus, the duality forms pairs of quiver gauge theories with the lattice of generators being the toric diagram of the dual and vice versa.

Brane Tilings and Specular Duality

We study a new duality which pairs 4d N=1 supersymmetric quiver gauge theories. They are represented by brane tilings and are worldvolume theories of D3 branes at Calabi-Yau 3-fold singularities. The new duality identifies theories which have the same combined mesonic and baryonic moduli space, otherwise called the master space. We obtain the associated Hilbert series which encodes both the generators and defining relations of the moduli space. We illustrate our findings with a set of brane tilings that have reflexive toric diagrams.

Hilbert Series for Moduli Spaces of Two Instantons

The Hilbert Series (HS) of the moduli space of two G instantons on C^2, where G is a simple gauge group, is studied in detail. For a given G, the moduli space is a singular hyperKahler cone with a symmetry group U(2) \times G, where U(2) is the natural symmetry group of C^2. Holomorphic functions on the moduli space transform in irreducible representations of the symmetry group and hence the Hilbert series admits a character expansion. For cases that G is a classical group (of type A, B, C, or D), there is an ADHM construction which allows us to compute the HS explicitly using a contour integral. For cases that G is of E-type, recent index results allow for an explicit computation of the HS. The character expansion can be expressed as an infinite sum which lives on a Cartesian lattice that is generated by a small number of representations. This structure persists for all G and allows for an explicit expressions of the HS to all simple groups. For cases that G is of type G_2 or F_4, discrete symmetries are enough to evaluate the HS exactly, even though neither ADHM construction nor index is known for these cases.

The methods include the use of 3-tuples to define the action of Gamma on C^3, the counting of triangular toric diagrams and the construction of hexagonal brane tilings. A formula for the partition function that counts these orbifolds is given. Extensions to higher dimensional orbifolds are briefly discussed.

Calabi-Yau Orbifolds and Torus Coverings

The theory of coverings of the two-dimensional torus is a standard part of algebraic topology and has applications in several topics in string theory, for example, in topological strings. This paper initiates applications of this theory to the counting of orbifolds of toric Calabi-Yau singularities, with particular attention to Abelian orbifolds of C^D. By doing so, the work introduces a novel analytical method for counting Abelian orbifolds, verifying previous algorithm results. One identifies a p-fold cover of the torus T^{D-1} with an Abelian orbifold of the form C^D/Z_p, for any dimension D and a prime number p. The counting problem leads to polynomial equations modulo p for a given Abelian subgroup of S_D, the group of discrete symmetries of the toric diagram for C^D. The roots of the polynomial equations correspond to orbifolds of the form C^D/Z_p, which are invariant under the corresponding subgroup of S_Ds. In turn, invariance under this subgroup implies a discrete symmetry for the corresponding quiver gauge theory, as is clearly seen by its brane tiling formulation.

Complete Intersection Moduli Spaces in N=4 Gauge Theories in Three Dimensions

We study moduli spaces of a class of three dimensional N=4 gauge theories which are in one-to-one correspondence with a certain set of ordered pairs of integer partitions. It was found that these theories can be realised on brane intervals in Type IIB string theory and can therefore be described using linear quiver diagrams. Mirror symmetry was known to act on such a theory by exchanging the partitions in the corresponding ordered pair, and hence the quiver diagram of the mirror theory can be written down in a straightforward way. The infrared Coulomb branch of each theory can be studied using moment map equations for a hyperKahler quotient of the Higgs branch of the mirror theory. We focus on three infinite subclasses of these singular hyperKahler spaces which are complete intersections. The Hilbert series of these spaces are computed in order to count generators and relations, and they turn out to be related to the corresponding partitions of the theories. For each theory, we explicitly discuss the generators of such a space and relations they satisfy in detail. These relations are precisely the defining equations of the corresponding complete intersection space.

Invariants of Toric Seiberg Duality

Three-branes at a given toric Calabi-Yau singularity lead to different phases of the conformal field theory related by toric (Seiberg) duality. Using the dimer model/brane tiling description in terms of bipartite graphs on a torus, we find a new invariant under Seiberg duality, namely the Klein j-invariant of the complex structure parameter in the distinguished isoradial embedding of the dimer, determined by the physical R-charges. Additional number theoretic invariants are described in terms of the algebraic number field of the R-charges. We also give a new compact description of the a-maximization procedure by introducing a generalized incidence matrix.

The Beta Ansatz: A Tale of Two Complex Structures

Brane tilings, sometimes called dimer models, are a class of bipartite graphs on a torus which encode the gauge theory data of four-dimensional SCFTs dual to D3-branes probing toric Calabi--Yau threefolds. An efficient way of encoding this information exploits the theory of dessin d'enfants, expressing the structure in terms of a permutation triple, which is in turn related to a Belyi pair, namely a holomorphic map from a torus to a P^1 with three marked points. The procedure of a-maximization, in the context of isoradial embeddings of the dimer, also associates a complex structure to the torus, determined by the R-charges in the SCFT, which can be compared with the Belyi complex structure. Algorithms for the explicit construction of the Belyi pairs are described in detail. In the case of orbifolds, these algorithms are related to the construction of covers of elliptic curves, which exploits the properties of Weierstrass elliptic functions. We present a counterexample to a previous conjecture identifying the complex structure of the Belyi curve to the complex structure associated with R-charges.

Counting Orbifolds

We present several methods of counting the orbifolds C^D/Gamma. A correspondence between counting orbifold actions on C^D, brane tilings, and toric diagrams in D-1 dimensions is drawn. Barycentric coordinates and scaling mechanisms are introduced to characterize lattice simplices as toric diagrams. We count orbifolds of C^3, C^4, C^5, C^6 and C^7. Some remarks are made on closed form formulas for the partition function that counts distinct orbifold actions.

Multi-Flux Warped Throats and Cascading Gauge Theories

We describe duality cascades and their infrared behavior for systems of D3-branes at singularities given by complex cones over del Pezzo surfaces (and related examples), in the presence of fractional branes. From the gauge field theory viewpoint, we show that D3-branes probing the infrared theory have a quantum deformed moduli space, given by a complex deformation of the initial geometry to a simpler one. This implies that for the dual supergravity viewpoint, the gauge theory strong infrared dynamics smoothes out the naked singularities of the recently constructed warped throat solutions with 3-form fluxes, describing the cascading RG flow of the gauge theory. This behavior thus generalizes the Klebanov-Strassler deformation of the conifold. We describe several explicit examples, including models with several scales of strong gauge dynamics. In the regime of widely separated scales, the dual supergravity solutions should correspond to throats with several radial regions with different exponential warp factors. These rich throat geometries are expected to have interesting applications in compactification and model building. Along our studies, we also construct explicit duality cascades for gauge theories with irrational R-charges, obtained from D-branes probing complex cones over dP1 and dP2.

Sublattice Counting and Orbifolds

Abelian orbifolds of C^3 are known to be encoded by hexagonal brane tilings. To date it is not known how to count all such orbifolds. We fill this gap by employing number theoretic techniques from crystallography, and by making use of Polya's Enumeration Theorem. The results turn out to be beautifully encoded in terms of partition functions and Dirichlet Series. The same methods apply to counting orbifolds of any toric non-compact Calabi-Yau singularity. As additional examples, we count the orbifolds of the conifold, of the L^{aba} theories, and of C^4.

Symmetries of Abelian Orbifolds

Using the Polya Enumeration Theorem, we count with particular attention to C^3/Gamma up to C^6/Gamma, abelian orbifolds in various dimensions which are invariant under cycles of the permutation group S_D. This produces a collection of multiplicative sequences, one for each cycle in the Cycle Index of the permutation group. A multiplicative sequence is controlled by its values on prime numbers and their pure powers. Therefore, we pay particular attention to orbifolds of the form C^D/Gamma where the order of Gamma is p^alpha. We propose a generalization of these sequences for any D and any p.

The Hilbert Series of the One Instanton Moduli Space

The moduli space of k G-instantons on R^4 for a classical gauge group G is known to be given by the Higgs branch of a supersymmetric gauge theory that lives on Dp branes probing D(p + 4) branes in Type II theories. For p = 3, these (3 + 1) dimensional gauge theories have N = 2 supersymmetry and can be represented by quiver diagrams. The F and D term equations coincide with the ADHM construction. The Hilbert series of the moduli spaces of one instanton for classical gauge groups is easy to compute and turns out to take a particularly simple form which is previously unknown. This allows for a G invariant character expansion and hence easily generalisable for exceptional gauge groups, where an ADHM construction is not known. The conjectures for exceptional groups are further checked using some new techniques like sewing relations in Hilbert Series. This is applied to Argyres-Seiberg dualities.

Tri-vertices and SU(2)'s

We examine a class of N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories in (3+1) dimensions whose Lagrangians are determined by graphs consisting of two building blocks, namely a tri-vertex and a line. A line represents an SU(2) gauge group and a tri-vertex represents a matter field in the trifundamental representation of SU(2)^3. These graphs can be topologically classified by the genus and the number of external legs. This paper focuses on the hypermultiplet moduli spaces of the aforementioned theories. We compute the Hilbert series which count all chiral operators on the hypermultiplet moduli space. Several examples show that theories corresponding to different graphs with the same genus and the same number of external legs possess the same Hilbert series. This is in agreement with the conjecture that such theories are related to each other by S-duality. We also give a general expression for the Hilbert series for the graph with any genus and any number of external legs.

Higgsing M2-brane Theories

Connections between different M2-brane theories are established via the Higgs mechanism, which can be most efficiently studied on brane tilings. This leads to several M2-brane models, with brane tilings or Chern-Simons levels which have not been considered so far. The moduli spaces of these models are identified and examined in detail. The toric diagrams are constructed using Kasteleyn matrices and the forward algorithm.

We present a computationally efficient algorithm that can be used to generate all possible brane tilings. Brane tilings represent the largest class of superconformal theories with known AdS duals in 3+1 and also 2+1 dimensions and have proved useful for describing the physics of both D3 branes and also M2 branes probing Calabi-Yau singularities. This algorithm has been implemented and is used to generate all possible brane tilings with at most 6 superpotential terms, including consistent and inconsistent brane tilings. The collection of inconsistent tilings found in this work form the most comprehensive study of such objects to date.

Counting Gauge Invariant Operators in SQCD with Classical Gauge Groups

We use the plethystic programme and the Molien-Weyl fomula to compute generating functions, or Hilbert Series, which count gauge invariant operators in SQCD with the SO and Sp gauge groups. The character expansion technique indicates how the global symmetries are encoded in the generating functions. We obtain the full character expansion for each theory with arbitrary numbers of colours and flavours. We study the orientifold action on SQCD with the SU gauge group and examine how it gives rise to SQCD with the SO and Sp gauge groups. We establish that the classical moduli space of SQCD is not only irreducible, but is also an affine Calabi-Yau cone over a weighted projective variety.

The new class reproduces all known cases so far and introduces many new models that are dual to M2 brane theories which probe a toric non-compact CY 4-fold. The master space of the quiver theory is used as a tool to construct the moduli space for this class and the Hilbert Series is computed for a selected set of examples.

Baryonic Generating Functions

We show how it is possible to use the plethystic program in order to compute baryonic generating functions that count BPS operators in the chiral ring of quiver gauge theories living on the world volume of D branes probing a non compact CY manifold. Special attention is given to the conifold theory and the orbifold C^2/Z_2 times C, where exact expressions for generating functions are given in detail. This paper solves a long standing problem for the combinatorics of quiver gauge theories with baryonic moduli spaces. It opens the way to a statistical analysis of quiver theories on baryonic branches. Surprisingly, the baryonic charge turns out to be the quantized Kahler modulus of the geometry.

Counting BPS Operators in Gauge Theories: Quivers, Syzygies and Plethystics

We develop a systematic and efficient method of counting single-trace and multi-trace BPS operators with two supercharges, for world-volume gauge theories of $N$ D-brane probes for both $N \to \infty$ and finite $N$. The techniques are applicable to generic singularities, orbifold, toric, non-toric, complete intersections, et cetera, even to geometries whose precise field theory duals are not yet known. The so-called ``Plethystic Exponential'' provides a simple bridge between (1) the defining equation of the Calabi-Yau, (2) the generating function of single-trace BPS operators and (3) the generating function of multi-trace operators. Mathematically, fascinating and intricate inter-relations between gauge theory, algebraic geometry, combinatorics and number theory exhibit themselves in the form of plethystics and syzygies.

A New Infinite Class of Quiver Gauge Theories

We construct a new infinite family of N=1 quiver gauge theories which can be Higgsed to the Y^{p,q} quiver gauge theories. The dual geometries are toric Calabi-Yau cones for which we give the toric data. We also discuss the action of Seiberg duality on these quivers, and explore the different Seiberg dual theories. We describe the relationship of these theories to five dimensional gauge theories on (p,q) 5-branes. Using the toric data, we specify some of the properties of the corresponding dual Sasaki-Einstein manifolds. These theories generically have algebraic R-charges which are not quadratic irrational numbers. The metrics for these manifolds still remain unknown.

On Monopoles and Domain Walls

The purpose of this paper is to describe a relationship between maximally supersymmetric domain walls and magnetic monopoles. We show that the moduli space of domain walls in non-abelian gauge theories with N flavors is isomorphic to a complex, middle dimensional, submanifold of the moduli space of U(N) magnetic monopoles. This submanifold is defined by the fixed point set of a circle action rotating the monopoles in the plane. To derive this result we present a D-brane construction of domain walls, yielding a description of their dynamics in terms of truncated Nahm equations. The physical explanation for the relationship lies in the fact that domain walls, in the guise of kinks on a vortex string, correspond to magnetic monopoles confined by the Meissner effect.

The Partition Function of the Two-Dimensional Black Hole Conformal Field Theory

We compute the partition function of the conformal field theory on the two-dimensional euclidean black hole background using path-integral techniques. We show that the resulting spectrum is consistent with the algebraic expectations for the SL(2,R)/U(1) coset conformal field theory construction. In particular, we find confirmation for the bound on the spin of the discrete representations and we determine the density of the continuous representations. We point out the relevance of the partition function to all string theory backgrounds that include an SL(2,R)/U(1) coset factor.

Discrete Torsion, Covering Groups and Quiver Diagrams

Without recourse to the sophisticated machinery of twisted group algebras, projective character tables and explicit values of 2-cocycles, we here present a simple algorithm to study the gauge theory data of D-brane probes on a generic orbifold G with discrete torsion turned on. We show in particular that the gauge theory can be obtained with the knowledge of no more than the ordinary character tables of G and its covering group G*. Subsequently we present the quiver diagrams of certain illustrative examples of SU(3)-orbifolds which have non-trivial Schur Multipliers. The paper serves as a companion to our earlier work (arXiv:hep-th/0010023) and aims to initiate a systematic and computationally convenient study of discrete torsion.

Orientifold planes, affine algebras and magnetic monopoles

We analyze string theory backgrounds that include different kinds of orientifold planes and map out a natural correspondence to (twisted) affine Kac-Moody algebras. The low-energy description of specific BPS states in these backgrounds leads to a construction of explicit twisted magnetic monopole solutions on R^3 x S^1. These backgrounds yield new low-energy field theories with twisted boundary conditions and the link with affine algebras yields a natural guess for the superpotentials of the corresponding pure N=1, and N=1* gauge theories.

Phase Structure of D-brane Gauge Theories and Toric Duality

Harnessing the unimodular degree of freedom in the definition of any toric diagram, we present a method of constructing inequivalent gauge theories which are world-volume theories of D-branes probing the same toric singularity. These theories are various phases in partial resolution of Abelian orbifolds. As examples, two phases are constructed for both the zeroth Hirzebruch and the second del Pezzo surfaces. We show that such a phenomenon is a special case of ``Toric Duality'' proposed in hep-th/0003085. Furthermore, we investigate the general conditions that distinguish these different gauge theories with the same (toric) moduli space.

D-Brane Gauge Theories from Toric Singularities and Toric Duality

Via partial resolution of Abelian orbifolds we present an algorithm for extracting a consistent set of gauge theory data for an arbitrary toric variety whose singularity a D-brane probes. As illustrative examples, we tabulate the matter content and superpotential for a D-brane living on the toric del Pezzo surfaces as well as the zeroth Hirzebruch surface. Moreover, we discuss the non-uniqueness of the general problem and present examples of vastly different theories whose moduli spaces are described by the same toric data. Our methods provide new tools for calculating gauge theories which flow to the same universality class in the IR. We shall call it ``Toric Duality.''

Discrete Torsion, Non-Abelian Orbifolds and the Schur Multiplier

Armed with the explicit computation of Schur Multipliers, we offer a classification of SU(n) orbifolds for n = 2,3,4 which permit the turning on of discrete torsion. This is in response to the host of activity lately in vogue on the application of discrete torsion to D-brane orbifold theories. As a by-product, we find a hitherto unknown class of N = 1 orbifolds with non-cyclic discrete torsion group. Furthermore, we supplement the status quo ante by investigating a first example of a non-Abelian orbifold admitting discrete torsion, namely the ordinary dihedral group as a subgroup of SU(3). A comparison of the quiver theory thereof with that of its covering group, the binary dihedral group, without discrete torsion, is also performed.

Mirror symmetry by O3-planes

We construct the three dimensional mirror theory of SO(2k) and SO(2k+1) gauge groups by using O3-planes. An essential ingredient in constructing the mirror is the splitting of a physical brane (NS-brane or D5-brane) on O3-planes. In particular, matching the dimensions of moduli spaces of mirror pair (for example, the SO(2k+1) and its mirror) there is a D3-brane creation or annihilation accompanying the splitting. This novel dynamical process gives a nontrivial prediction for strongly coupled field theories, which will be very interesting to check by Seiberg-Witten curves. Furthermore, applying the same idea, we revisit the mirror theory of Sp(k) gauge group and find new mirrors which differ from previously known results. Our new result for Sp(k) gives another example to a previously observed fact, which shows that different theories can be mirror to the same theory. We also discussed the phenomena such as "hidden FI-parameters" when the number of flavors and the rank of the gauge group satisfy certain relations, ``incomplete Higgsing'' for the mirror of SO(2k+1) and the ``hidden global symmetry''. After discussing the mirror for a single Sp or SO gauge group, we extend the study to a product of two gauge groups in two different models, namely the elliptic and the non-elliptic models.

Branes and Supersymmetry Breaking in Three Dimensional Gauge Theories

It is shown that supersymmetry is spontaneously broken in certain three-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories, by using the s-rule in their string theory realization as brane configurations. In particular, supersymmetry is broken in N=3 supersymmetric Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theory with gauge group SU(n) and CS coefficient k, as well as in its N=2 and N=1 deformations, when n>|k|. In addition, supersymmetry is broken in the N=1 mass deformation of N=2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with gauge group SU(n) and one matter multiplet when n>1. In the latter case the breaking is induced by an instanton-generated repulsive potential.

Five-branes, Seven-branes and Five-dimensional E_n field theories

We generalize the (p,q) 5-brane web construction of five-dimensional field theories by introducing (p,q) 7-branes, and apply this construction to theories with a one-dimensional Coulomb branch. The 7-branes render the exceptional global symmetry of these theories manifest. Additionally, 7-branes allow the construction of all E_n theories up to n=8, previously not possible in 5-brane configurations. The exceptional global symmetry in the field theory is a subalgebra of an affine symmetry on the 7-branes, which is necessary for the existence of the system. We explicitly determine the quantum numbers of the BPS states of all E_n theories using two simple geometrical constraints.

Generalising ideas of an earlier work \cite{Bo-Han}, we address the problem of constructing Brane Box Models of what we call the Z-D Type from a new point of view, so as to establish the complete correspondence between these brane setups and orbifold singularities of the non-Abelian G generated by Z_k and D_d under certain group-theoretic constraints to which we refer as the BBM conditions. Brane Boxes and Branes on Singularities

Brane Box Models of intersecting NS and D5 branes are mapped to D3 branes at C^3/Gamma orbifold singularities and vise versa, in a setup which gives rise to N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories in four dimensions. The Brane Box Models are constructed on a two-torus. The map is interpreted as T-duality along the two directions of the torus. Some Brane Box Models contain NS fivebranes winding around (p,q) cycles in the torus, and our method provides the geometric T-dual to such objects. An amusing aspect of the mapping is that T-dual configurations are calculated using D=4 N=1 field theory data. The mapping to the singularity picture allows the geometrical interpretation of all the marginal couplings in finite field theories. This identification is further confirmed using the AdS/CFT correspondence for orbifold theories. The AdS massless fields coupling to the marginal operators in the boundary appear as stringy twisted sectors of S^5/Gamma. The mapping for theories which are non-finite requires the introduction of fractional D3 branes in the singularity picture.

Branes and N=2 Theories in Two Dimensions

Type IIA brane configurations are used to construct N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories in two dimensions. Using localization of chiral multiplets in ten-dimensional spacetime, supersymmetric non-linear sigma models with target space such as $\CP^{n-1}$ and the Grassmann manifolds are studied in detail. The quantum properties of these models are realized in $M$ theory by taking the strong Type IIA coupling limit. The brane picture implies an equivalence between the parameter space of N=2 supersymmetric theories in two dimensions and the moduli space of vacua of N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories in four dimensions. Effects like level-rank duality are interpreted in the brane picture as continuation past infinite coupling. The BPS solitons of the $\CP^{n-1}$ model are identified as topological excitations of a membrane and their masses are computed. This provides the brane realization of higher rank tensor representations of the flavor group.

Confinement and Strings in MQCD

We study aspects of confinement in the M theory fivebrane version of QCD (MQCD). We show heavy quarks are confined in hadrons (which take the form of membrane-fivebrane bound states) for N=1 and softly broken N=2 SU(Nc) MQCD. We explore and clarify the transition from the exotic physics of the latter to the standard physics of the former. In particular, the many strings and quark-antiquark mesons found in N=2 field theory by Douglas and Shenker are reproduced. It is seen that in the N=1 limit all but one such meson disappears while all of the strings survive. The strings of softly broken N=2, N=1, and even non-supersymmetric SU(Nc) MQCD have a common ratio for their tensions as a function of the amount of flux they carry. We also comment on the almost BPS properties of the Douglas-Shenker strings and discuss the brane picture for monopole confinement on N=2 QCD Higgs branches.

We discuss the BPS states, and their arrangement in E_6 multiplets. We then propose the formulation of the world volume theory of KK monopoles in eleven dimensions that decouples from the bulk. Webs of (p,q) 5-branes, Five Dimensional Field Theories and Grid Diagrams

We continue to study 5d N=1 supersymmetric field theories and their compactifications on a circle through brane configurations. We develop a model, which we call (p,q) Webs, which enables simple geometrical computations to reproduce the known results, and facilitates further study. The physical concepts of field theory are transparent in this picture, offering an interpretation for global symmetries, local symmetries, the effective (running) coupling, the Coulomb and Higgs branches, the monopole tensions, and the mass of BPS particles. A rule for the dimension of the Coulomb branch is found by introducing Grid Diagrams. Some known classifications of field theories are reproduced. In addition to the study of the vacuum manifold we develop methods to determine the BPS spectrum. Some states, such as quarks, correspond to instantons inside the 5-brane which we call strips. In general, these may not be identified with (p,q) strings. We describe how a strip can bend out of a 5-brane, becoming a string. A general BPS state corresponds to a Web of strings and strips. For special values of the string coupling a few strips can combine and leave the 5-brane as a string.

Type IIB Superstrings, BPS Monopoles, And Three-Dimensional Gauge Dynamics

We propose an explanation via string theory of the correspondence between the Coulomb branch of certain three-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories and certain moduli spaces of magnetic monopoles. The same construction also gives an explanation, via $SL(2,\Z)$ duality of Type IIB superstrings, of the recently discovered ``mirror symmetry'' in three dimensions. New phase transitions in three dimensions as well as new infrared fixed points and even new coupling constants not present in the known Lagrangians are predicted from the string theory construction. An important role in the construction is played by a novel aspect of brane dynamics in which a third brane is created when two branes cross.
