Geodesics in the extended Kähler cone of Calabi-Yau threefolds

We present a detailed study of the effective cones of Calabi-Yau threefolds with $h^{1,1}=2$, including the possible types of walls bounding the Kähler cone and a classification of the intersection forms arising in the geometrical phases. For all three normal forms in the classification we explicitly solve the geodesic equation and use this to study the evolution near Kähler cone walls and across flop transitions in the context of M-theory compactifications. In the case where the geometric regime ends at a wall beyond which the effective cone continues, the geodesics "crash" into the wall, signaling a breakdown of the M-theory supergravity approximation. For illustration, we characterise the structure of the extended Kähler and effective cones of all $h^{1,1}=2$ threefolds from the CICY and Kreuzer-Skarke lists, providing a rich set of examples for studying topology change in string theory. These examples show that all three cases of intersection form are realised and suggest that isomorphic flops and infinite flop sequences are common phenomena.

Numerical Metrics for Complete Intersection and Kreuzer-Skarke Calabi-Yau Manifolds

We introduce neural networks to compute numerical Ricci-flat CY metrics for complete intersection and Kreuzer-Skarke Calabi-Yau manifolds at any point in Kähler and complex structure moduli space, and introduce the package cymetric which provides computation realizations of these techniques. In particular, we develop and computationally realize methods for point-sampling on these manifolds. The training for the neural networks is carried out subject to a custom loss function. The Kähler class is fixed by adding to the loss a component which enforces the slopes of certain line bundles to match with topological computations. Our methods are applied to various manifolds, including the quintic manifold, the bi-cubic manifold and a Kreuzer-Skarke manifold with Picard number two. We show that volumes and line bundle slopes can be reliably computed from the resulting Ricci-flat metrics. We also apply our results to compute an approximate Hermitian-Yang-Mills connection on a specific line bundle on the bi-cubic.

Recent Developments in Line Bundle Cohomology and Applications to String Phenomenology

Vector bundle cohomology represents a key ingredient for string phenomenology, being associated with the massless spectrum arising in string compactifications on smooth compact manifolds. Although standard algorithmic techniques exist for performing cohomology calculations, they are laborious and ill-suited for scanning over large sets of string compactifications to find those most relevant to particle physics. In this article we review some recent progress in deriving closed-form expressions for line bundle cohomology and discuss some applications to string phenomenology.

Evolving Heterotic Gauge Backgrounds: Genetic Algorithms versus Reinforcement Learning

The immensity of the string landscape and the difficulty of identifying solutions that match the observed features of particle physics have raised serious questions about the predictive power of string theory. Modern methods of optimisation and search can, however, significantly improve the prospects of constructing the standard model in string theory. In this paper we scrutinise a corner of the heterotic string landscape consisting of compactifications on Calabi-Yau three-folds with monad bundles and show that genetic algorithms can be successfully used to generate anomaly-free supersymmetric SO(10) GUTs with three families of fermions that have the right ingredients to accommodate the standard model. We compare this method with reinforcement learning and find that the two methods have similar efficacy but somewhat complementary characteristics.

Heterotic String Model Building with Monad Bundles and Reinforcement Learning

We use reinforcement learning as a means of constructing string compactifications with prescribed properties. Specifically, we study heterotic SO(10) GUT models on Calabi-Yau three-folds with monad bundles, in search of phenomenologically promising examples. Due to the vast number of bundles and the sparseness of viable choices, methods based on systematic scanning are not suitable for this class of models. By focusing on two specific manifolds with Picard numbers two and three, we show that reinforcement learning can be used successfully to explore monad bundles. Training can be accomplished with minimal computing resources and leads to highly efficient policy networks. They produce phenomenologically promising states for nearly 100% of episodes and within a small number of steps. In this way, hundreds of new candidate standard models are found.

Machine Learning Calabi-Yau Four-folds

Hodge numbers of Calabi-Yau manifolds depend non-trivially on the underlying manifold data and they present an interesting challenge for machine learning. In this letter we consider the data set of complete intersection Calabi-Yau four-folds, a set of about 900,000 topological types, and study supervised learning of the Hodge numbers h^1,1 and h^3,1 for these manifolds. We find that h^1,1 can be successfully learned (to 96% precision) by fully connected classifier and regressor networks. While both types of networks fail for h^3,1, we show that a more complicated two-branch network, combined with feature enhancement, can act as an efficient regressor (to 98% precision) for h^3,1, at least for a subset of the data. This hints at the existence of an, as yet unknown, formula for Hodge numbers.

Machine Learning String Standard Models

We study machine learning of phenomenologically relevant properties of string compactifications, which arise in the context of heterotic line bundle models. Both supervised and unsupervised learning are considered. We find that, for a fixed compactification manifold, relatively small neural networks are capable of distinguishing consistent line bundle models with the correct gauge group and the correct chiral asymmetry from random models without these properties. The same distinction can also be achieved in the context of unsupervised learning, using an auto-encoder. Learning non-topological properties, specifically the number of Higgs multiplets, turns out to be more difficult, but is possible using sizeable networks and feature-enhanced data sets.

Heterotic Instantons for Monad and Extension Bundles

We consider non-perturbative superpotentials from world-sheet instantons wrapped on holomorphic genus zero curves in heterotic string theory. These superpotential contributions feature prominently in moduli stabilization and large field axion inflation, which makes their presence or absence, as well as their functional dependence on moduli, an important issue. We develop geometric methods to compute the instanton superpotentials for heterotic string theory with monad and extension bundles. Using our methods, we find a variety of examples with a non-vanishing superpotential. In view of standard vanishing theorems, we speculate that these results are likely to be attributed to the non-compactness of the instanton moduli space. We test this proposal, for the case of monad bundles, by considering gauged linear sigma models where compactness of the instanton moduli space can be explicitly checked. In all such cases, we find that the geometric results are consistent with the vanishing theorems. Surprisingly, linearly dependent Pfaffians even arise for cases with a non-compact instanton moduli space. This suggests some gauged linear sigma models with a non-compact instanton moduli space may still have a vanishing instanton superpotential.

Index Formulae for Line Bundle Cohomology on Complex Surfaces

We conjecture and prove closed-form index expressions for the cohomology dimensions of line bundles on del Pezzo and Hirzebruch surfaces. Further, for all compact toric surfaces we provide a simple algorithm which allows expression of any line bundle cohomology in terms of an index. These formulae follow from general theorems we prove for a wider class of surfaces. In particular, we construct a map that takes any effective line bundle to a nef line bundle while preserving the zeroth cohomology dimension. For complex surfaces, these results explain the appearance of piecewise polynomial equations for cohomology and they are a first step towards understanding similar formulae recently obtained for Calabi-Yau three-folds.

Instantons and Hilbert Functions

We study superpotentials from worldsheet instantons in heterotic Calabi-Yau compactifications for vector bundles constructed from line bundle sums, monads and extensions. Within a certain class of manifolds and for certain second homology classes, we derive simple necessary conditions for a non-vanishing instanton superpotential. These show that non-vanishing instanton superpotentials are rare and require a specific pattern for the bundle construction. For the class of monad and extension bundles with this pattern, we derive a sufficient criterion for non-vanishing instanton superpotentials based on an affine Hilbert function. This criterion shows that a non-zero instanton superpotential is common within this class. The criterion can be checked using commutative algebra methods only and depends on the topological data defining the Calabi-Yau X and the vector bundle V.

Machine Learning Line Bundle Cohomology

We investigate different approaches to machine learning of line bundle cohomology on complex surfaces as well as on Calabi-Yau three-folds. Standard function learning based on simple fully connected networks with logistic sigmoids is reviewed and its main features and shortcomings are discussed. It has been observed recently that line bundle cohomology can be described by dividing the Picard lattice into certain regions in each of which the cohomology dimension is described by a polynomial formula. Based on this structure, we set up a network capable of identifying the regions and their associated polynomials, thereby effectively generating a conjecture for the correct cohomology formula. For complex surfaces, we also set up a network which learns certain rigid divisors which appear in a recently discovered master formula for cohomology dimensions.

Formulae for Line Bundle Cohomology on Calabi-Yau Threefolds

We present closed form expressions for the ranks of all cohomology groups of holomorphic line bundles on several Calabi-Yau threefolds realised as complete intersections in products of projective spaces. The formulae have been obtained by systematising and extrapolating concrete calculations and they have been checked computationally. Although the intermediate calculations often involve laborious computations of ranks of Leray maps in the Koszul spectral sequence, the final results for cohomology follow a simple pattern. The space of line bundles can be divided into several different regions, and in each such region the ranks of all cohomology groups can be expressed as polynomials in the line bundle integers of degree at most three. The number of regions increases and case distinctions become more complicated for manifolds with a larger Picard number. We also find explicit cohomology formulae for several non-simply connected Calabi-Yau threefolds realised as quotients by freely acting discrete symmetries. More cases may be systematically handled by machine learning algorithms.

Discrete Symmetries of Complete Intersection Calabi-Yau Manifolds

In this paper, we classify non-freely acting discrete symmetries of complete intersection Calabi- Yau manifolds and their quotients by freely-acting symmetries. These non-freely acting symmetries can appear as symmetries of low-energy theories resulting from string compactifications on these Calabi-Yau manifolds, particularly in the context of the heterotic string. Hence, our results are relevant for four-dimensional model building with discrete symmetries and they give an indication which symmetries of this kind can be expected from string theory. For the 1695 known quotients of complete intersection manifolds by freely-acting discrete symmetries, non-freely-acting, generic symmetries arise in 381 cases and are, therefore, a relatively common feature of these manifolds. We find that 9 different discrete groups appear, ranging in group order from 2 to 18, and that both regular symmetries and R-symmetries are possible.

Holomorphic Yukawa Couplings in Heterotic String Theory

We develop techniques, based on differential geometry, to compute holomorphic Yukawa couplings for heterotic line bundle models on Calabi-Yau manifolds defined as complete intersections in projective spaces. It is shown explicitly how these techniques relate to algebraic methods for computing holomorphic Yukawa couplings. We apply our methods to various examples and evaluate the holomorphic Yukawa couplings explicitly as functions of the complex structure moduli. It is shown that the rank of the Yukawa matrix can decrease at specific loci in complex structure moduli space. In particular, we compute the up Yukawa coupling and the singlet-Higgs-lepton trilinear coupling in the heterotic standard model described in arXiv:1404.2767

Yukawa Unification in Heterotic String Theory

We analyze Yukawa unification in the the context of $E_8\times E_8$ heterotic Calabi-Yau models which rely on breaking to a GUT theory via a non-flat gauge bundle and subsequent Wilson line breaking to the standard model. Our focus is on underlying GUT theories with gauge group $SU(5)$ or $SO(10)$. We provide a detailed analysis of the fact that, in contrast to traditional field theory GUTs, the underlying GUT symmetry of these models does not enforce Yukawa unification. Using this formalism, we present various scenarios where Yukawa unification can occur as a consequence of additional symmetries. These additional symmetries arise naturally in some heterotic constructions and we present an explicit heterotic line bundle model which realizes one of these scenarios.

A Heterotic QCD Axion

We show that a KSVZ axion with a decay constant in the phenomenologically allowed range can be obtained in certain $E_8\times E_8$ heterotic string models. These models have an enhanced symmetry locus in the moduli space, and a non-universal, Kahler moduli dependent Fayet-Iliopoulos term which vanishes at this locus. Close to this locus the Fayet-Iliopoulos term is small and can lead to an axion decay constant significantly lower than the string scale. In this way, the no-go arguments of Svrcek and Witten, which are based on a universal, dilaton-dependent Fayet-Iliopoulos term, can be avoided. The relevant axion originates from phases of bundle moduli which correspond to deformations away from the enhanced symmetry locus. We construct an explicit example, based on a heterotic line bundle standard model, with all the required ingredients.

Heterotic Moduli Stabilisation and Non-Supersymmetric Vacua

We study moduli stabilisation in four-dimensional $N=1$ supergravity theories which originate from compactifications of the heterotic string on certain manifolds with $SU(3)$ structure. These theories have a non-trivial superpotential generated from geometric flux and, in general, D-terms associated to anomalous $U(1)$ symmetries. We show that, at the perturbative level, there are no supersymmetry preserving vacua. However, subject to a certain technical condition on the D-terms which aligns the extrema of the F-term and D-term potentials, $\partial_iV_F=\partial_iV_D=0$, we find at the perturbative level analytic stable AdS vacua which break supersymmetry. As a result, all T-moduli and the dilaton are stabilised perturbatively with supersymmetry broken at a high scale. We also show numerically that similar vacua can be found when the technical condition on the D-term is relaxed. These vacua persist in the presence of non-perturbative effects. In all cases, the vacua remain AdS.

Hypercharge Flux in Heterotic Compactifications

We study heterotic Calabi-Yau models with hypercharge flux breaking, where the visible E8 gauge group is directly broken to the standard model group by a non-flat gauge bundle, rather than by a two-step process involving an intermediate grand unified theory and a Wilson line. It is shown that the required alternative E8 embeddings of hypercharge, normalized as required for gauge unification, can be found and we classify these possibilities. However, for all but one of these embeddings we prove a general no-go theorem which asserts that no suitable geometry and vector bundle leading to a standard model spectrum can be found. Intuitively, this happens due to the large number of index conditions which have to be imposed in order to obtain a correct physical spectrum in the absence of an underlying grand unified theory.

The Family Problem: Hints from Heterotic Line Bundle Models

Within the class of heterotic line bundle models, we argue that N=1 vacua which lead to a small number of low-energy chiral families are preferred. By imposing an upper limit on the volume of the internal manifold, as required in order to obtain finite values of the four-dimensional gauge couplings, and validity of the supergravity approximation we show that, for a given manifold, only a finite number of line bundle sums are consistent with supersymmetry. By explicitly scanning over this finite set of line bundle models on certain manifolds we show that, for a sufficiently small volume of the internal manifold, the family number distribution peaks at small values, consistent with three chiral families. The relation between the maximal number of families and the gauge coupling is discussed, which hints towards a possible explanation of the family problem.

A Heterotic Standard Model with B-L Symmetry and a Stable Proton

We consider heterotic Calabi-Yau compactifications with S(U(4)xU(1)) background gauge fields. These models lead to gauge groups with an additional U(1) factor which, under certain conditions, can combine with hypercharge to a B-L symmetry. The associated gauge boson is automatically super-massive and, hence, does not constitute a phenomenological problem. We illustrate this class of compactifications with a model based on the monad construction, which leads to a supersymmetric standard model with three families of quarks and leptons, one pair of Higgs doublets, three right-handed neutrinos and no exotics charged under the standard model group. The presence of the B-L symmetry means that the model is safe from proton decay induced by dimension four operators. Due to the presence of a special locus in moduli space where the bundle structure group is Abelian and the low-energy symmetry enhances we can also show the absence of dimension five proton-decay inducing operators.

Heterotic Model Building: 16 Special Manifolds

We study heterotic model building on 16 specific Calabi-Yau manifolds constructed as hypersurfaces in toric four-folds. These 16 manifolds are the only ones among the more than half a billion manifolds in the Kreuzer-Skarke list with a non-trivial first fundamental group. We classify the line bundle models on these manifolds, both for SU(5) and SO(10) GUTs, which lead to consistent supersymmetric string vacua and have three chiral families. A total of about 29000 models is found, most of them corresponding to SO(10) GUTs. These models constitute a starting point for detailed heterotic model building on Calabi-Yau manifolds in the Kreuzer-Skarke list. Non-generic Couplings in Supersymmetric Standard Models

We study two phases of a heterotic standard model, obtained from a Calabi-Yau compactification of the E8xE8 heterotic string, in the context of the associated four-dimensional effective theories. In the first phase we have a standard model gauge group, an MSSM spectrum, four additional U(1) symmetries and singlet fields. In the second phase, obtained from the first by continuing along the singlet directions, three of the additional U(1) symmetries are spontaneously broken and the remaining one is a B-L symmetry. In this second phase, dimension five operators inducing proton decay are consistent with all symmetries and as such, they are expected to be present. We show that, contrary to this expectation, these operators are forbidden due to the additional U(1) symmetries present in the first phase of the model. We emphasize that such 'unexpected' absences of operators, due to symmetry enhancement at specific loci in the moduli space, can be phenomenologically relevant and, in the present case, protect the model from fast proton decay.

Topological Invariants and Fibration Structure of Complete Intersection Calabi-Yau Four-Folds

We investigate the mathematical properties of the class of Calabi-Yau four-folds recently found in [arXiv:1303.1832]. This class consists of 921,497 configuration matrices which correspond to manifolds that are described as complete intersections in products of projective spaces. For each manifold in the list, we compute the full Hodge diamond as well as additional topological invariants such as Chern classes and intersection numbers. Using this data, we conclude that there are at least 36,779 topologically distinct manifolds in our list. We also study the fibration structure of these manifolds and find that 99.95 percent can be described as elliptic fibrations. In total, we find 50,114,908 elliptic fibrations, demonstrating the multitude of ways in which many manifolds are fibered. A sub-class of 26,088,498 fibrations satisfy necessary conditions for admitting sections. A Comprehensive Scan for Heterotic SU(5) GUT models

Compactifications of heterotic theories on smooth Calabi-Yau manifolds remains one of the most promising approaches to string phenomenology. In two previous papers, http://arXiv.org/abs/arXiv:1106.4804 and http://arXiv.org/abs/arXiv:1202.1757, large classes of such vacua were constructed, using sums of line bundles over complete intersection Calabi-Yau manifolds in products of projective spaces that admit smooth quotients by finite groups. A total of 10^12 different vector bundles were investigated which led to 202 SU(5) Grand Unified Theory (GUT) models. With the addition of Wilson lines, these in turn led, by a conservative counting, to 2122 heterotic standard models. In the present paper, we extend the scope of this programme and perform an exhaustive scan over the same class of models. A total of 10^40 vector bundles are analysed leading to 35,000 SU(5) GUT models. All of these compactifications have the right field content to induce low-energy models with the matter spectrum of the supersymmetric standard model, with no exotics of any kind. The detailed analysis of the resulting vast number of heterotic standard models is a substantial and ongoing task in computational algebraic geometry.

All Complete Intersection Calabi-Yau Four-Folds

We present an exhaustive, constructive, classification of the Calabi-Yau four-folds which can be described as complete intersections in products of projective spaces. A comprehensive list of 921,497 configuration matrices which represent all topologically distinct types of complete intersection Calabi-Yau four-folds is provided and can be downloaded at http://www-thphys.physics.ox.ac.uk/projects/CalabiYau/Cicy4folds/index.html . The manifolds have non-negative Euler characteristics in the range 0 - 2610. This data set will be of use in a wide range of physical and mathematical applications. Nearly all of these four-folds are elliptically fibered and are thus of interest for F-theory model building.

Heterotic Calabi-Yau Compactifications with Flux

Compactifications of the heterotic string with NS flux normally require non Calabi-Yau internal spaces which are complex but no longer Kähler. We point out that this conclusion rests on the assumption of a maximally symmetric four-dimensional space-time and can be avoided if this assumption is relaxed. Specifically, it is shown that an internal Calabi-Yau manifold is consistent with the presence of NS flux provided four-dimensional space-time is taken to be a domain wall. These Calabi-Yau domain wall solutions can still be associated with a covariant four-dimensional N=1 supergravity. In this four-dimensional context, the domain wall arises as the "simplest" solution to the effective supergravity due to the presence of a flux potential with a runaway direction. Our main message is that NS flux is a legitimate ingredient for moduli stabilization in heterotic Calabi-Yau models. Ultimately, the success of such models depends on the ability to stabilize the runaway direction and thereby "lift" the domain wall to a maximally supersymmetric vacuum.

The Moduli Space of Heterotic Line Bundle Models: a Case Study for the Tetra-Quadric

It has recently been realised that polystable, holomorphic sums of line bundles over smooth Calabi-Yau three-folds provide a fertile ground for heterotic model building. Large numbers of phenomenologically promising such models have been constructed for various classes of Calabi-Yau manifolds. In this paper we focus on a case study for the tetra-quadric - a Calabi-Yau hypersurface embedded in a product of four CP1 spaces. We address the question of finiteness of the class of consistent and physically viable line bundle models constructed on this manifold. Further, for a specific semi-realistic example, we explore the embedding of the line bundle sum into the larger moduli space of non-Abelian bundles, both by means of constructing specific polystable non-Abelian bundles and by turning on VEVs in the associated low-energy theory. In this context, we explore the fate of the Higgs doublets as we move in bundle moduli space. The non-Abelian compactifications thus constructed lead to SU(5) GUT models with an additional global B-L symmetry. The non-Abelian compactifications inherit many of the appealing phenomenological features of the Abelian model, such as the absence of dimension four and dimension five operators triggering fast proton decay.

Vacuum Varieties, Holomorphic Bundles and Complex Structure Stabilization in Heterotic Theories

We discuss the use of gauge fields to stabilize complex structure moduli in Calabi-Yau three-fold compactifications of heterotic string and M-theory. The requirement that the gauge fields in such models preserve supersymmetry leads to a complicated landscape of vacua in complex structure moduli space. We develop methods to systematically map out this multi-branched vacuum space, in a computable and explicit manner. In analyzing the resulting vacua, it is found that the associated Calabi-Yau three-folds are sometimes stabilized at a value of complex structure resulting in a singular compactification manifold. We describe how it is possible to resolve these singularities, in some cases, while maintaining computational control over the moduli stabilization mechanism. The discussion is illustrated throughout the paper with explicit worked examples.

Heterotic Line Bundle Standard Models

In a previous publication, arXiv:1106.4804, we have found 200 models from heterotic Calabi-Yau compactifications with line bundles, which lead to standard models after taking appropriate quotients by a discrete symmetry and introducing Wilson lines. In this paper, we construct the resulting standard models explicitly, compute their spectrum including Higgs multiplets, and analyze some of their basic properties. After removing redundancies we find about 400 downstairs models, each with the precise matter spectrum of the supersymmetric standard model, with one, two or three pairs of Higgs doublets and no exotics of any kind. In addition to the standard model gauge group, up to four Green-Schwarz anomalous U(1) symmetries are present in these models, which constrain the allowed operators in the four-dimensional effective supergravity. The vector bosons associated to these anomalous U(1) symmetries are massive. We explicitly compute the spectrum of allowed operators for each model and present the results, together with the defining data of the models, in a database of standard models accessible at http://www-thphys.physics.ox.ac.uk/projects/CalabiYau/linebundlemodels/index.html. Based on these results we analyze elementary phenomenological properties. For example, for about 200 models all dimension four and five proton decay violating operators are forbidden by the additional U(1) symmetries.

Moduli Stabilising in Heterotic Nearly Kähler Compactifications

We study heterotic string compactifications on nearly Kähler homogeneous spaces, including the gauge field effects which arise at order α'. Using Abelian gauge fields, we are able to solve the Bianchi identity and supersymmetry conditions to this order. The four-dimensional external space-time consists of a domain wall solution with moduli fields varying along the transverse direction. We find that the inclusion of α' corrections improves the moduli stabilization features of this solution. In this case, one of the dilaton and the volume modulus asymptotes to a constant value away from the domain wall. It is further shown that the inclusion of non-perturbative effects can stabilize the remaining modulus and "lift" the domain wall to an AdS vacuum. The coset SU(3)/U(1)^2 is used as an explicit example to demonstrate the validity of this AdS vacuum. Our results show that heterotic nearly Kähler compactifications can lead to maximally symmetric four-dimensional space-times at the non-perturbative level.

Bundles over Nearly-Kahler Homogeneous Spaces in Heterotic String Theory

We construct heterotic vacua based on six-dimensional nearly-Kahler homogeneous manifolds and non-trivial vector bundles thereon. Our examples are based on three specific group coset spaces. It is shown how to construct line bundles over these spaces, compute their properties and build up vector bundles consistent with supersymmetry and anomaly cancelation. It turns out that the most interesting coset is $SU(3)/U(1)^2$. This space supports a large number of vector bundles which lead to consistent heterotic vacua, some of them with three chiral families.

Heterotic Bundles on Calabi-Yau Manifolds with Small Picard Number

We undertake a systematic scan of vector bundles over spaces from the largest database of known Calabi-Yau three-folds, in the context of heterotic string compactification. Specifically, we construct positive rank five monad bundles over Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in toric varieties, with the number of Kahler moduli equal to one, two, and three and extract physically interesting models. We select models which can lead to three families of matter after dividing by a freely-acting discrete symmetry and including Wilson lines. About 2000 such models on two manifolds are found.

Stabilizing All Geometric Moduli in Heterotic Calabi-Yau Vacua

We propose a scenario to stabilize all geometric moduli - that is, the complex structure, Kahler moduli and the dilaton - in smooth heterotic Calabi-Yau compactifications without Neveu-Schwarz three-form flux. This is accomplished using the gauge bundle required in any heterotic compactification, whose perturbative effects on the moduli are combined with non-perturbative corrections. We argue that, for appropriate gauge bundles, all complex structure and a large number of other moduli can be perturbatively stabilized - in the most restrictive case, leaving only one combination of Kahler moduli and the dilaton as a flat direction. At this stage, the remaining moduli space consists of Minkowski vacua. That is, the perturbative superpotential vanishes in the vacuum without the necessity to fine-tune flux. Finally, we incorporate non-perturbative effects such as gaugino condensation and/or instantons. These are strongly constrained by the anomalous U(1) symmetries which arise from the required bundle constructions. We present a specific example, with a consistent choice of non-perturbative effects, where all remaining flat directions are stabilized in an AdS vacuum.

The Atiyah Class and Complex Structure Stabilization in Heterotic Calabi-Yau Compactifications

Holomorphic gauge fields in N=1 supersymmetric heterotic compactifications can constrain the complex structure moduli of a Calabi-Yau manifold. In this paper, the tools necessary to use holomorphic bundles as a mechanism for moduli stabilization are systematically developed. We review the requisite deformation theory -- including the Atiyah class, which determines the deformations of the complex structure for which the gauge bundle becomes non-holomorphic and, hence, non-supersymmetric. In addition, two equivalent approaches to this mechanism of moduli stabilization are presented. The first is an efficient computational algorithm for determining the supersymmetric moduli space, while the second is an F-term potential in the four-dimensional theory associated with vector bundle holomorphy. These three methods are proven to be rigorously equivalent. We present explicit examples in which large numbers of complex structure moduli are stabilized. Finally, higher-order corrections to the moduli space are discussed.

Two Hundred Heterotic Standard Models on Smooth Calabi-Yau Threefolds

We construct heterotic standard models by compactifying on smooth Calabi-Yau three-folds in the presence of purely Abelian internal gauge fields. A systematic search over complete intersection Calabi-Yau manifolds with less than six Kahler parameters leads to over 200 such models which we present. Each of these models has precisely the matter spectrum of the MSSM, at least one pair of Higgs doublets, the standard model gauge group and no exotics. For about 100 of these models there are, naively, four additional U(1) symmetries, however these are Green-Schwarz anomalous and, hence, massive. In the remaining cases, three U(1) symmetries are anomalous while the fourth, massless one can be spontaneously broken by singlet vacuum expectation values. The presence of additional global U(1) symmetries, together with the possibility of switching on singlet vacuum expectation values, leads to a rich phenomenology which is illustrated for a particular example. Our database of standard models, which can be further enlarged by simply extending the computer-based search, allows for a detailed and systematic phenomenological analysis of string standard models, covering issues such as the structure of Yukawa couplings, R-parity violation, proton stability and neutrino masses.

G-structures and Domain Walls in Heterotic Theories

We consider heterotic string solutions based on a warped product of a four-dimensional domain wall and a six-dimensional internal manifold, preserving two supercharges. The constraints on the internal manifolds with SU(3) structure are derived. They are found to be generalized half-flat manifolds with a particular pattern of torsion classes and they include half-flat manifolds and Strominger's complex non-Kahler manifolds as special cases. We also verify that previous heterotic compactifications on half-flat mirror manifolds are based on this class of solutions.

Stabilizing the Complex Structure in Heterotic Calabi-Yau Vacua

In this paper, we show that the presence of gauge fields in heterotic Calabi-Yau compacitifications causes the stabilisation of some, or all, of the complex structure moduli of the Calabi-Yau manifold while maintaining a Minkowski vacuum. Certain deformations of the Calabi-Yau complex structure, with all other moduli held fixed, can lead to the gauge bundle becoming non-holomorphic and, hence, non-supersymmetric. This leads to an F-term potential which stabilizes the corresponding complex structure moduli. We use 10- and 4-dimensional field theory arguments as well as a derivation based purely on algebraic geometry to show that this picture is indeed correct. An explicit example is presented in which a large subset of complex structure moduli is fixed. We demonstrate that this type of theory can serve as the hidden sector in heterotic vacua and can co-exist with realistic particle physics.

Exploring Positive Monad Bundles And A New Heterotic Standard Model

A complete analysis of all heterotic Calabi-Yau compactifications based on positive two-term monad bundles over favourable complete intersection Calabi-Yau threefolds is performed. We show that the original data set of about 7000 models contains 91 standard-like models which we describe in detail. A closer analysis of Wilson-line breaking for these models reveals that none of them gives rise to precisely the matter field content of the standard model. We conclude that the entire set of positive two-term monads on complete intersection Calabi-Yau manifolds is ruled out on phenomenological grounds. We also take a first step in analyzing the larger class of non-positive monads. In particular, we construct a supersymmetric heterotic standard model within this class. This model has the standard model gauge group and an additional U(1)_{B-L} symmetry, precisely three families of quarks and leptons, one pair of Higgs doublets and no anti-families or exotics of any kind.

Heterotic Models from Vector Bundles on Toric Calabi-Yau Manifolds

We systematically approach the construction of heterotic E_8 X E_8 Calabi-Yau models, based on compact Calabi-Yau three-folds arising from toric geometry and vector bundles on these manifolds. We focus on a simple class of 101 such three-folds with smooth ambient spaces, on which we perform an exhaustive scan and find all positive monad bundles with SU(N), N=3,4,5 structure groups, subject to the heterotic anomaly cancellation constraint. We find that anomaly-free positive monads exist on only 11 of these toric three-folds with a total number of bundles of about 2000. Only 21 of these models, all of them on three-folds realizable as hypersurfaces in products of projective spaces, allow for three families of quarks and leptons. We also perform a preliminary scan over the much larger class of semi-positive monads which leads to about 44000 bundles with 280 of them satisfying the three-family constraint. These 280 models provide a starting point for heterotic model building based on toric three-folds.

Yukawa Couplings in Heterotic Compactification

We present a practical, algebraic method for efficiently calculating the Yukawa couplings of a large class of heterotic compactifications on Calabi-Yau three-folds with non-standard embeddings. Our methodology covers all of, though is not restricted to, the recently classified positive monads over favourable complete intersection Calabi-Yau three-folds. Since the algorithm is based on manipulating polynomials it can be easily implemented on a computer. This makes the automated investigation of Yukawa couplings for large classes of smooth heterotic compactifications a viable possibility.

An Abundance of Heterotic Vacua

We explicitly construct the largest dataset to date of heterotic vacua arising from stable vector bundles on Calabi-Yau threefolds. Focusing on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds with spectral cover bundles, we show that the number of heterotic models with non-zero number of generations is finite. We classify these models according to the complex base of their Calabi-Yau threefold and to the unification gauge group that they preserve in four dimensions. This database of the order of $10^7$ models, which includes potential Standard Model candidates, is subjected to some preliminary statistical analyses. The additional constraint that there should be three net generations of particles gives a dramatic reduction of the number of vacua.

A New Method for Finding Vacua in String Phenomenology

One of the central problems of string-phenomenology is to find stable vacua in the four dimensional effective theories which result from compactification. We present an algorithmic method to find all of the vacua of any given string-phenomenological system in a huge class. In particular, this paper reviews and then extends hep-th/0606122 to include various non-perturbative effects. These include gaugino condensation and instantonic contributions to the superpotential.

Moduli Stabilisation in Heterotic String Compactifications

In this paper we analyze the structure of supersymmetric vacua in compactifications of the heterotic string on certain manifolds with SU(3) structure. We first study the effective theories obtained from compactifications on half-flat manifolds and show that solutions which stabilise the moduli at acceptable values are hard to find. We then derive the effective theories associated with compactification on generalised half-flat manifolds. It is shown that these effective theories are consistent with four-dimensional N=1 supergravity and that the superpotential can be obtained by a Gukov-Vafa-Witten type formula. Within these generalised models, we find consistent supersymmetric (AdS) vacua at weak gauge coupling, provided we allow for general internal gauge bundles. In simple cases we perform a counting of such vacua and find that a fraction of about 1/1000 leads to a gauge coupling consistent with gauge unification.

Kink-boundary collisions in a two dimensional scalar field theory

In a two-dimensional toy model, motivated from five-dimensional heterotic M-theory, we study the collision of scalar field kinks with boundaries. By numerical simulation of the full two-dimensional theory, we find that the kink is always inelastically reflected with a model-independent fraction of its kinetic energy converted into radiation. We show that the reflection can be analytically understood as a fluctuation around the scalar field vacuum. This picture suggests the possibility of spontaneous emission of kinks from the boundary due to small perturbations in the bulk. We verify this picture numerically by showing that the radiation emitted from the collision of an initial single kink eventually leads to a bulk populated by many kinks. Consequently, processes changing the boundary charges are practically unavoidable in this system. We speculate that the system has a universal final state consisting of a stack of kinks, their number being determined by the initial energy.

Brane-World Inflation and the Transition to Standard Cosmology

In the context of a five-dimensional brane-world model motivated from heterotic M-theory, we develop a framework for potential-driven brane-world inflation. Specifically this involves a classification of the various background solutions of (A)dS_5 type, an analysis of five-dimensional slow-roll conditions and a study of how a transition to the flat vacuum state can be realized. It is shown that solutions with bulk potential and both bane potentials positive exist but are always non-separating and have a non-static orbifold. It turns out that, for this class of backgrounds, a transition to the flat vacuum state during inflation is effectively prevented by the rapidly expanding orbifold. We demonstrate that such a transition can be realized for solutions where one boundary potential is negative. For this case, we present two concrete inflationary models which exhibit the transition explicitly.

Neutrino Masses and Mixing in Brane-World Theories

We present a comprehensive study of five-dimensional brane-world models for neutrino physics based on flat compactifications. Particular emphasis is put on the inclusion of bulk mass terms. We derive a number of general results for such brane-world models with bulk mass terms. In particular, in the limit of small brane-bulk couplings, the electroweak eigenstates are predominantly given as a superposition of three light states with non-trivial small admixtures of bulk states. As a consequence, neutrinos can undergo standard oscillations as well as oscillation into bulk Kaluza-Klein states. We use this structure to construct a specific model based on Z_2 orbifolding and bulk Majorana masses which is compatible with all observed oscillation phenomena. The solar neutrino deficit is explained by oscillations into sterile bulk states while the atmospheric neutrino deficit is due to mu - tau oscillations with naturally maximal mixing. In addition, the model can accommodate the LSND result and a significant neutrino dark matter component. We also analyze the constraints from supernova energy loss on neutrino brane-world theories and show that our specific model is consistent with these constraints.

Boundary Inflation

Inflationary solutions are constructed in a specific five-dimensional model with boundaries motivated by heterotic M-theory. We concentrate on the case where the vacuum energy is provided by potentials on those boundaries. It is pointed out that the presence of such potentials necessarily excites bulk Kaluza-Klein modes. We distinguish a linear and a non-linear regime for those modes. In the linear regime, inflation can be discussed in an effective four-dimensional theory in the conventional way. We lift a four-dimensional inflating solution up to five dimensions where it represents an inflating domain wall pair. This shows explicitly the inhomogeneity in the fifth dimension. We also demonstrate the existence of inflating solutions with unconventional properties in the non-linear regime. Specifically, we find solutions with and without an horizon between the two boundaries. These solutions have certain problems associated with the stability of the additional dimension and the persistence of initial excitations of the Kaluza-Klein modes.

Five--Branes and Supersymmetry Breaking in M--Theory

Supersymmetry breaking via gaugino condensation is studied in vacua of heterotic M-theory with five-branes. We show that supersymmetry is still broken by a global mechanism and that the non-perturbative superpotential takes the standard form. When expressed in terms of low energy fields, a modification arises due to a threshold correction in the gauge kinetic function that depends on five-brane moduli. We also determine the form of the low energy matter field Kahler potential. These results are used to discuss the soft supersymmetry breaking parameters, in particular the question of universality.

Heterotic M-theory in Five Dimensions

We derive the five-dimensional effective action of strongly coupled heterotic string theory for the complete (1,1) sector of the theory by performing a reduction, on a Calabi-Yau three-fold, of M-theory on S^1/Z_2. A crucial ingredient for a consistent truncation is a non-zero mode of the antisymmetric tensor field strength which arises due to magnetic sources on the orbifold planes. The correct effective theory is a gauged version of five-dimensional N=1 supergravity coupled to Abelian vector multiplets, the universal hypermultiplet and four-dimensional boundary theories with gauge and gauge matter fields. The gauging is such that the dual of the four-form field strength in the universal multiplet is charged under a particular linear combination of the Abelian vector fields. In addition, the theory has potential terms for the moduli in the bulk as well as on the boundary. Because of these potential terms, the supersymmetric ground state of the theory is a multi-charged BPS three-brane domain wall, which we construct in general. We show that the five-dimensional theory together with this solution provides the correct starting point for particle phenomenology as well as early universe cosmology. As an application, we compute the four-dimensional N=1 supergravity theory for the complete (1,1) sector to leading nontrivial order by a reduction on the domain wall background. We find a correction to the matter field Kahler potential and threshold corrections to the gauge kinetic functions.

Non-standard embedding and five-branes in heterotic M-Theory

We construct vacua of M-theory on S^1/Z_2 associated with Calabi-Yau three-folds. These vacua are appropriate for compactification to N=1 supersymmetry theories in both four and five dimensions. We allow for general E_8 x E_8 gauge bundles and for the presence of five-branes. The five-branes span the four-dimensional uncompactified space and are wrapped on holomorphic curves in the Calabi-Yau space. Properties of these vacua, as well as of the resulting low-energy theories, are discussed. We find that the low-energy gauge group is enlarged by gauge fields that originate on the five-brane world-volumes. In addition, the five-branes increase the types of new E_8 x E_8 breaking patterns allowed by the non-standard embedding. Characteristic features of the low-energy theory, such as the threshold corrections to the gauge kinetic functions, are significantly modified due to the presence of the five-branes, as compared to the case of standard or non-standard embeddings without five-branes.

Symmetric Vacua in Heterotic M-Theory

Symmetric vacua of heterotic M-theory, characterized by vanishing cohomology classes of individual sources in the three-form Bianchi identity, are analyzed on smooth Calabi-Yau three-folds. We show that such vacua do not exist for elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau spaces. However, explicit examples are found for Calabi-Yau three-folds arising as intersections in both unweighted and weighted projective space. We show that such symmetric vacua can be combined with attractive phenomenological features such as three generations of quarks and leptons. Properties of the low energy effective actions associated with symmetric vacua are discussed. In particular, the gauge kinetic functions receive no perturbative threshold corrections, there are no corrections to the matter field Kahler metric and the associated five-dimensional effective theory admits flat space as its vacuum.

Cosmological Solutions of Horava-Witten Theory

We discuss simple cosmological solutions of Horava-Witten theory describing the strongly coupled heterotic string. At energies below the grand-unified scale, the effective theory is five- not four-dimensional, where the additional coordinate parameterizes a S^1/Z_2 orbifold. Furthermore, it admits no homogeneous solutions. Rather, the vacuum state, appropriate for a reduction to four-dimensional supersymmetric models, is a BPS domain wall. Relevant cosmological solutions are those associated with this BPS state. In particular, such solutions must be inhomogeneous, depending on the orbifold coordinate as well as on time. We present two examples of this new type of cosmological solution, obtained by separation of variables rather that by exchange of time and radius coordinate applied to a brane solution, as in previous work. The first example represents the analog of a rolling radii solution with the radii specifying the geometry of the domain wall. This is generalized in the second example to include a nontrivial ``Ramond-Ramond'' scalar.

The Universe as a Domain Wall

It is shown that the effective five-dimensional theory of the strongly coupled heterotic string is a gauged version of N=1 five-dimensional supergravity with four-dimensional boundaries. For the universal supermultiplets, this theory is explicitly constructed by a generalized dimensional reduction procedure on a Calabi-Yau manifold. A crucial ingredient in the reduction is the retention of a "non-zero mode" of the four-form field strength, leading to the gauging of the universal hypermultiplet by the graviphoton. We show that this theory has an exact three-brane domain wall solution which reduces to Witten's "deformed" Calabi-Yau background upon linearization. This solution consists of two parallel three-branes with sources provided by the four-dimensional boundary theories and constitutes the appropriate background for a reduction to four dimensions. Four-dimensional space-time is then identified with the three-brane worldvolume.

Gaugino Condensation in M-theory on S^1/Z_2

In the low energy limit of for M-theory on S^1/Z_2, we calculate the gaugino condensate potential in four dimensions using the background solutions due to Horava. We show that this potential is free of delta-function singularities and has the same form as the potential in the weakly coupled heterotic string. A general flux quantization rule for the three-form field of M-theory on S^1/Z_2 is given and checked in certain limiting cases. This rule is used to fix the free parameter in the potential originating from a zero mode of the form field. Finally, we calculate soft supersymmetry breaking terms. We find that corrections to the Kahler potential and the gauge kinetic function, which can be large in the strongly coupled region, contribute significantly to certain soft terms. In particular, for supersymmetry breaking in the T-modulus direction, the small values of gaugino masses and trilinear couplings that occur in the weakly coupled, large radius regime are enhanced to order m_3/2 in M-theory. The scalar soft masses remain small even, in the strong coupling M-theory limit.

U-Duality Symmetries from the Membrane Worldvolume

We study U-duality symmetries of toroidally compactified M theory from the membrane worldvolume point of view. This is done taking the most general set of bosonic background fields into account. Upon restriction to pure moduli backgrounds, we are able to find the correct U-duality groups and moduli coset parameterizations for dimensions D>6 as symmetries of the membrane worldvolume theory. In particular, we derive the D=8 U-duality group SL(2)xSL(3). For general background fields, we concentrate on the case D=8. Though the SL(2) part of the symmetry appears to be obstructed by certain terms in the equations of motion, we are able to read off the transformation properties for the background fields. These transformations are verified by comparison with 11-dimensional supergravity dimensionally reduced to D=8.

Post Inflationary Behaviour of String Moduli

We analyze the behaviour of moduli fields in string effective models between the end of inflation and reheating. The effective moduli potential during this era is derived for a class of simple models. We argue that this potential significantly stabilizes the modulus at its high energy minimum, if some restrictions on modular weights are met. Two mechanisms to further stabilize the moduli to their low energy minima are discussed explicitly: coinciding minima at a point of enhanced symmetry, and the smooth transition from high to low energy minimum by an effective mass term C^2 H^2. For both cases we present explicit examples, and C^2 is found to be O(10) at most. In addition, we show that during a smooth transition the reduction of the modulus amplitude strongly depends on the shape of the low energy potential.

Stabilizing dilaton and moduli vacua in string and M--Theory cosmology

We show how non-trivial form fields can induce an effective potential for the dilaton and metric moduli in compactifications of type II string theory and M-theory. For particular configurations, the potential can have a stable minimum. In cosmological compactifications of type II theories, we demonstrate that, if the metric moduli become fixed, this mechanism can then lead to the stabilization of the dilaton vacuum. Furthermore, we show that for certain cosmological M-theory solutions, non-trivial forms lead to the stabilization of moduli. We present a number of examples, including cosmological solutions with two solitonic forms and examples corresponding to the infinite throat of certain p-branes.
