Fractional structures on bundle gerbe modules and fractional classifying spaces

We study the homotopy aspects of the twisted Chern classes of torsion bundle gerbe modules. Using Sullivan's rational homotopy theory, we realize the twisted Chern classes at the level of classifying spaces. The construction suggests a notion, which we call fractional U-structure serving as a universal framework to study the twisted Chern classes of torsion bundle gerbe modules from the perspective of classifying spaces. Based on this, we introduce and study higher fractional structures on torsion bundle gerbe modules parallel to the higher structures on ordinary vector bundles.

Higher localised $\hat{A}$-genera for proper actions and applications

For a finitely generated discrete group $Γ$ acting properly on a spin manifold $M$, we formulate new topological obstructions to $Γ$-invariant metrics of positive scalar curvature on $M$ that take into account the cohomology of the classifying space $\underline{B}Γ$ for proper actions. In the cocompact case, this leads to a natural generalisation of Gromov-Lawson's notion of higher $\hat{A}$-genera to the setting of proper actions by groups with torsion. It is conjectured that these invariants obstruct the existence of $Γ$-invariant positive scalar curvature on $M$. For classes arising from the subring of $H^*(\underline{B}Γ,\mathbb{R})$ generated by elements of degree at most $2$, we are able to prove this, under suitable assumptions, using index-theoretic methods for projectively invariant Dirac operators and a twisted $L^2$-Lefschetz fixed-point theorem involving a weighted trace on conjugacy classes. The latter generalises a result of Wang-Wang to the projective setting. In the special case of free actions and the trivial conjugacy class, this reduces to a theorem of Mathai, which provided a partial answer to a conjecture of Gromov-Lawson on higher $\hat{A}$-genera. If $M$ is non-cocompact, we obtain obstructions to $M$ being a partitioning hypersurface inside a non-cocompact $Γ$-manifold with non-negative scalar curvature that is positive in a neighbourhood of the hypersurface. Finally, we define a quantitative version of the twisted higher index and use it to prove a parameterised vanishing theorem in terms of the lower bound of the total curvature term in the square of the twisted Dirac operator.

T-duality and the exotic chiral de Rham complex

Let $Z$ be a principal circle bundle over a base manifold $M$ equipped with an integral closed $3$-form $H$ called the flux. Let $\widehat{Z}$ be the T-dual circle bundle over $M$ with flux $\widehat{H}$. Han and Mathai recently constructed the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-graded space of exotic differential forms $\mathcal{A}^{\bar{k}}(\widehat{Z})$. It has an additional $\mathbb{Z}$-grading such that the degree zero component coincides with the space of invariant twisted differential forms $Ω^{\bar{k}}(\widehat{Z}, \widehat{H})^{\widehat{\mathbb{T}}}$, and it admits a differential that extends the twisted differential $d_{\widehat{H}} = d + \widehat{H}$. The T-duality isomorphism $Ω^{\bar{k}}(Z,H)^{\mathbb{T}} \rightarrow Ω^{\overline{k+1}}(\widehat{Z}, \widehat{H})^{\widehat{\mathbb{T}}}$ of Bouwknegt, Evslin and Mathai extends to an isomorphism $Ω^{\bar{k}}(Z,H) \rightarrow \mathcal{A}^{\overline{k+1}}(\widehat{Z})$. In this paper, we introduce the exotic chiral de Rham complex $\mathcal{A}^{\text{ch},\widehat{H},\bar{k}}(\widehat{Z})$ which contains $\mathcal{A}^{\bar{k}}(\widehat{Z})$ as the weight zero subcomplex. We give an isomorphism $Ω^{\text{ch},H,\bar{k}}(Z) \rightarrow \mathcal{A}^{\text{ch},\widehat{H},\overline{k+1}}(\widehat{Z})$ where $Ω^{\text{ch},H,\bar{k}}(Z)$ denotes the twisted chiral de Rham complex of $Z$, which chiralizes the above T-duality map.

Witten Genus and Elliptic genera for proper actions

In this paper, we construct for the first time, the Witten genus and elliptic genera on noncompact manifolds with a proper cocompact action by an almost connected Lie group and prove vanishing and rigidity results that generalise known results for compact group actions on compact manifolds. We also compute our genera for some interesting examples, and study the non-spinc case in an appendix.

Bubbly and Buoyant Particle-Laden Turbulent Flows

Fluid turbulence is commonly associated with stronger drag, greater heat transfer, and more efficient mixing than in laminar flows. In many natural and industrial settings, turbulent liquid flows contain suspensions of dispersed bubbles and light particles. Recently, much attention has been devoted to understanding the behavior and underlying physics of such flows by use of both experiments and high-resolution direct numerical simulations. This review summarizes our present understanding of various phenomenological aspects of bubbly and buoyant particle-laden turbulent flows. We begin by discussing different dynamical regimes, including those of crossing trajectories and wake-induced oscillations of rising particles, and regimes in which bubbles and particles preferentially accumulate near walls or within vortical structures. We then address how certain paradigmatic turbulent flows, such as homogeneous isotropic turbulence, channel flow, Taylor-Couette turbulence, and thermally driven turbulence, are modified by the presence of these dispersed bubbles and buoyant particles. We end with a list of summary points and future research questions.

Coarse geometry and Callias quantisation

Consider a proper, isometric action by a unimodular, locally compact group $G$ on a complete Riemannian manifold $M$. For equivariant elliptic operators that are invertible outside a cocompact subset of $M$, we show that a localised index in the $K$-theory of the maximal group $C^*$-algebra of $G$ is well-defined. The approach is based on the use of maximal versions of equivariant localised Roe algebras, and many of the technical arguments in this paper are used to handle the ways in which they differ from their reduced versions. By using the maximal group $C^*$-algebra instead of its reduced counterpart, we can apply the trace given by integration over $G$ to recover an index defined earlier by the last two authors, and developed further by Braverman, in terms of sections invariant under the group action. As a very special case, this allows one to refine numerical obstructions to positive scalar curvature on a noncompact $\operatorname{Spin}$ manifold $X$ defined via Callias index theory, to obstructions in the $K$-theory of the maximal $C^*$-algebra of the fundamental group $π_1(X)$. As a motivating application in another direction, we prove a version of Guillemin and Sternberg's quantisation commutes with reduction principle for equivariant indices of $\operatorname{Spin}^c$ Callias-type operators.

Nonlinear modeling and characterization of ultrasoft silicone elastomers

We introduce a strain-energy based nonlinear hyper-elastic formulation to model the material properties of ultrasoft dielectric elastomers over a wide range of elastic properties, prestretch, and thicknesses. We build on the uniaxial Gent formulation, and under the conditions of equi-biaxial strain, derive an expression for the bulge deformation versus pressure. A circular bulge test methodology is developed to experimentally measure the mechanical response of the silicone membranes. The Gent model captures both neo-Hookean and strain-stiffening behaviors, and gives predictions which are in agreement with experimental measurements. Membranes with different thinner fractions are characterized over nearly one order of magnitude variation in shear modulus. Stiffer membranes are observed to harden at lower stretch ratios due to the increased fraction of polymer chains in them. The present approach offers a simple and cost-effective procedure for characterizing soft membranes under commonly encountered biaxial deformation conditions.

T-Duality, Jacobi Forms and Witten Gerbe Modules

In this paper, we extend the T-duality Hori maps in [arXiv:hep-th/0306062], inducing isomorphisms of twisted cohomologies on T-dual circle bundles, to graded Hori maps and show that they induce isomorphisms of two-variable series of twisted cohomologies on the T-dual circle bundles, preserving Jacobi form properties. The composition of the graded Hori map with its dual equals the Euler operator. We also construct Witten gerbe modules arising from gerbe modules and show that their graded twisted Chern characters are Jacobi forms under an anomaly vanishing condition on gerbe modules, thereby giving interesting examples.

Water entry of spheres into a rotating liquid

The transient cavity dynamics during water entry of a heavy, non-rotating sphere impacting a rotating pool of liquid is studied experimentally, numerically, and theoretically. We show that the pool rotation advances the transition of the cavity type - from deep seal to surface seal - marked by a reduction in the transitional Froude number. The role of the dimensionless rotational number $\mathcal{S} \equiv ωR_0/U_0$ on the transient cavity dynamics is unveiled, where $R_0$ is the sphere radius, $ω$ the angular speed of the liquid, and $U_0$ the impact velocity. The rotating background liquid has two discernible effects on the cavity evolution. Firstly, an increase in the underwater pressure field due to centripetal effects, and secondly a reduction in the pressure of airflow in the cavity neck near the water surface. The non-dimensional pinch-off time of the deep seal shows a robust 1/2 power-law dependence on the Froude number, but with a reducing prefactor for increasing $ω$. Our findings reveal that the effects of a rotating background liquid on the water entry can be traced back to the subtle differences in the initial stage splash and the near-surface cavity dynamics.

Equivariant Callias index theory via coarse geometry

The equivariant coarse index is well-understood and widely used for actions by discrete groups. We extend the definition of this index to general locally compact groups. We use a suitable notion of admissible modules over $C^*$-algebras of continuous functions to obtain a meaningful index. Inspired by work by Roe, we then develop a localised variant, with values in the $K$-theory of a group $C^*$-algebra. This generalises the Baum-Connes assembly map to non-cocompact actions. We show that an equivariant index for Callias-type operators is a special case of this localised index, obtain results on existence and non-existence of Riemannian metrics of positive scalar curvature invariant under proper group actions, and show that a localised version of the Baum-Connes conjecture is weaker than the original conjecture, while still giving a conceptual description of the $K$-theory of a group $C^*$-algebra.

Positive scalar curvature via end-periodic manifolds

We obtain two types of results on positive scalar curvature metrics for compact spin manifolds that are even dimensional. The first type of result are obstructions to the existence of positive scalar curvature metrics on such manifolds, expressed in terms of end-periodic eta invariants that were defined by Mrowka-Ruberman-Saveliev (MRS). These results are the even dimensional analogs of the results by Higson-Roe. The second type of result studies the number of path components of the space of positive scalar curvature metrics modulo diffeomorphism for compact spin manifolds that are even dimensional, whenever this space is non-empty. These extend and refine certain results in Botvinnik-Gilkey and also MRS. End-periodic analogs of K-homology and bordism theory are defined and are utilised to prove many of our results.

Positive Scalar Curvature and Poincare Duality for Proper Actions

For G an almost-connected Lie group, we study G-equivariant index theory for proper co-compact actions with various applications, including obstructions to and existence of G-invariant Riemannian metrics of positive scalar curvature. We prove a rigidity result for almost-complex manifolds, generalising Hattori's results, and an analogue of Petrie's conjecture. When G is an almost-connected Lie group or a discrete group, we establish Poincare duality between G-equivariant K-homology and K-theory, observing that Poincare duality does not necessarily hold for general G.

Microbubbles and microparticles are not faithful tracers of turbulent acceleration

We report on the Lagrangian statistics of acceleration of small (sub-Kolmogorov) bubbles and tracer particles with Stokes number St << 1 in turbulent flow. At decreasing Reynolds number, the bubble accelerations show deviations from that of tracer particles, i.e. they deviate from the Heisenberg-Yaglom prediction and show a quicker decorrelation despite their small size and minute St. Using direct numerical simulations, we show that these effects arise due the drift of these particles through the turbulent flow. We theoretically predict this gravity-driven effect for developed isotropic turbulence, with the ratio of Stokes to Froude number or equivalently the particle drift-velocity governing the enhancement of acceleration variance and the reductions in correlation time and intermittency. Our predictions are in good agreement with experimental and numerical results. The present findings are relevant to a range of scenarios encompassing tiny bubbles and droplets that drift through the turbulent oceans and the atmosphere. They also question the common usage of micro-bubbles and micro-droplets as tracers in turbulence research.

Translational and rotational dynamics of a large buoyant sphere in turbulence

We report experimental measurements of the translational and rotational dynamics of a large buoyant sphere in isotropic turbulence. We introduce an efficient method to simultaneously determine the position and (absolute) orientation of a spherical body from visual observation. The method employs a minimization algorithm to obtain the orientation from the 2D projection of a specific pattern drawn onto the surface of the sphere. This has the advantages that it does not require a database of reference images, is easily scalable using parallel processing, and enables accurate absolute orientation reference. Analysis of the sphere's translational dynamics reveals clear differences between the streamwise and transverse directions. The translational auto-correlations and PDFs provide evidence for periodicity in the particle's dynamics even under turbulent conditions. The angular autocorrelations show weak periodicity. The angular accelerations exhibit wide tails, however without a directional dependence.

Exotic twisted equivariant cohomology of loop spaces, twisted Bismut-Chern character and T-duality

We define exotic twisted $S^1$-equivariant cohomology for the loop space $LZ$ of a smooth manifold $Z$ via the invariant differential forms on $LZ$ with coefficients in the (typically non-flat) holonomy line bundle of a gerbe, with differential an equivariantly flat superconnection. We introduce the twisted Bismut-Chern character form, a loop space refinement of the twisted Chern character form, which represent classes in the completed periodic exotic twisted $S^1$-equivariant cohomology of $LZ$. We establish a localisation theorem for the completed periodic exotic twisted $S^1$-equivariant cohomology for loop spaces and apply it to establish T-duality in a background flux in type II String Theory from a loop space perspective.

Geometric quantization and families of inner products

We formulate a quantization commutes with reduction principle in the setting where the Lie group $G$, the symplectic manifold it acts on, and the orbit space of the action may all be noncompact. It is assumed that the action is proper, and the zero set of a deformation vector field, associated to the momentum map and an equivariant family of inner products on the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ of $G$, is $G$-cocompact. The central result establishes an asymptotic version of this quantization commutes with reduction principle. Using an equivariant family of inner products on $\mathfrak{g}$ instead of a single one makes it possible to handle both noncompact groups and manifolds, by extending Tian and Zhang's Witten deformation approach to the noncompact case.

Higher abelian gauge theory associated to gerbes on noncommutative deformed M5-branes and S-duality

We enhance the action of higher abelian gauge theory associated to a gerbe on an M5-brane with an action of a torus ${\mathbb T}^n (n\ge 2)$, by a noncommutative ${\mathbb T}^n$-deformation of the M5-brane. The ingredients of the noncommutative action and equations of motion include the deformed Hodge duality, deformed wedge product, and the noncommutative integral over the noncommutative space obtained by strict deformation quantization. As an application we then introduce a variant model with an enhanced action in which we show that the corresponding partition function is a modular form, which is a purely noncommutative geometry phenomenon since the usual theory only has a $\mathbb Z_2$-symmetry. In particular, S-duality in this 6-dimensional higher abelian gauge theory model is shown to be, in this sense, on par with the usual 4-dimensional case.

T-Duality of Topological Insulators

Topological insulators and D-brane charges in string theory can both be classified by the same family of groups. In this paper, we extend this connection via a geometric transform, giving a novel duality of topological insulators which can be viewed as a condensed matter analog of T-duality in string theory. For 2D Chern insulators, this duality exchanges the rank and Chern number of the valence bands.

Twisted chiral de Rham complex, generalized geometry, and T-duality

The chiral de Rham complex of Malikov, Schechtman, and Vaintrob, is a sheaf of differential graded vertex algebras that exists on any smooth manifold $Z$, and contains the ordinary de Rham complex at weight zero. Given a closed 3-form $H$ on $Z$, we construct the twisted chiral de Rham differential $D_H$, which coincides with the ordinary twisted differential in weight zero. We show that its cohomology vanishes in positive weight and coincides with the ordinary twisted cohomology in weight zero. As a consequence, we propose that in a background flux, Ramond-Ramond fields can be interpreted as $D_H$-closed elements of the chiral de Rham complex. Given a T-dual pair of principal circle bundles $Z, \widehat{Z}$ with fluxes $H, \widehat{H}$, we establish a degree-shifting linear isomorphism between a central quotient of the $i \mathbb{R}[t]$-invariant chiral de Rham complexes of $Z$ and $\widehat{Z}$. At weight zero, it restricts to the usual isomorphism of $S^1$-invariant differential forms, and induces the usual isomorphism in twisted cohomology. This is interpreted as T-duality in type II string theory from a loop space perspective. A key ingredient in defining this isomorphism is the language of Courant algebroids, which clarifies the notion of functoriality of the chiral de Rham complex.

Wake-driven dynamics of finite-sized buoyant spheres in turbulence

Particles suspended in turbulent flows are affected by the turbulence and at the same time act back on the flow. The resulting coupling can give rise to rich variability in their dynamics. Here we report experimental results from an investigation of finite-sized buoyant spheres in turbulence. We find that even a marginal reduction in the particle's density from that of the fluid can result in strong modification of its dynamics. In contrast to classical spatial filtering arguments and predictions of particle models, we find that the particle acceleration variance increases with size. We trace this reversed trend back to the growing contribution from wake-induced forces, unaccounted for in current particle models in turbulence. Our findings highlight the need for improved multi-physics based models that account for particle wake effects for a faithful representation of buoyant-sphere dynamics in turbulence.

Formal geometric quantisation for proper actions

We define formal geometric quantisation for proper Hamiltonian actions by possibly noncompact groups on possibly noncompact, prequantised symplectic manifolds, generalising work of Weitsman and Paradan. We study the functorial properties of this version of formal geometric quantisation, and relate it to a recent result by the authors via a version of the shifting trick. For (pre)symplectic manifolds of a certain form, quantisation commutes with reduction, in the sense that formal quantisation equals a more direct version of quantisation.

Spectral sections, twisted rho invariants and positive scalar curvature

We had previously defined the rho invariant $ρ_{spin}(Y,E,H, g)$ for the twisted Dirac operator $\not\partial^E_H$ on a closed odd dimensional Riemannian spin manifold $(Y, g)$, acting on sections of a flat hermitian vector bundle $E$ over $Y$, where $H = \sum i^{j+1} H_{2j+1} $ is an odd-degree differential form on $Y$ and $H_{2j+1}$ is a real-valued differential form of degree ${2j+1}$. Here we show that it is a conformal invariant of the pair $(H, g)$. In this paper we express the defect integer $ρ_{spin}(Y,E,H, g) - ρ_{spin}(Y,E, g)$ in terms of spectral flows and prove that $ρ_{spin}(Y,E,H, g)\in \mathbb Q$, whenever $g$ is a Riemannian metric of positive scalar curvature. In addition, if the maximal Baum-Connes conjecture holds for $π_1(Y)$ (which is assumed to be torsion-free), then we show that $ρ_{spin}(Y,E,H, rg) =0$ for all $r\gg 0$, significantly generalizing our earlier results. These results are proved using the Bismut-Weitzenböck formula, a scaling trick, the technique of noncommutative spectral sections, and the Higson-Roe approach.

Spherical T-duality II: An infinity of spherical T-duals for non-principal SU(2)-bundles

Recently we initiated the study of spherical T-duality for spacetimes that are principal SU(2)-bundles. In this paper, we extend spherical T-duality to spacetimes that are oriented non-principal SU(2)-bundles. There are several interesting new examples in this case and a new phenomenon appearing in the non-principal case is the existence of infinitely many spherical T-duals.

T-duality for circle bundles via noncommutative geometry

Recently Baraglia showed how topological T-duality can be extended to apply not only to principal circle bundles, but also to non-principal circle bundles. We show that his results can also be recovered via two other methods: the homotopy-theoretic approach of Bunke and Schick, and the noncommutative geometry approach which we previously used for principal torus bundles. This work has several interesting byproducts, including a study of the K-theory of crossed products by Isom(R), the universal cover of O(2), and some interesting facts about equivariant K-theory for Z/2. In the final section of this paper, these results are extended to the case of bundles with singular fibers, or in other words, non-free O(2)-actions.

Conformal invariants of twisted Dirac operators and positive scalar curvature

For a closed, spin, odd dimensional Riemannian manifold $(Y,g)$, we define the rho invariant $ρ_{spin}(Y,E,H, g)$ for the twisted Dirac operator $D^E_H$ on $Y$, acting on sections of a flat hermitian vector bundle $E$ over $Y$, where $H = \sum i^{j+1} H_{2j+1}$ is an odd-degree closed differential form on $Y$ and $H_{2j+1}$ is a real-valued differential form of degree ${2j+1}$. We prove that it only depends on the conformal class of the pair $[H,g]$. In the special case when $H$ is a closed 3-form, we use a Lichnerowicz-Weitzenbock formula for the square of the twisted Dirac operator, to show that whenever $Y$ is a closed spin manifold, then $ρ_{spin}(Y,E,H, g)= ρ_{spin}(Y,E, g)$ for all $|H|$ small enough, whenever g is a Riemannian metric of positive scalar curvature. When $H$ is a top-degree form on an oriented three dimensional manifold, we also compute $ρ_{spin}(Y,E,H, g)$.

Holomorphic Quillen determinant line bundles on integral compact Kahler manifolds

We show that any compact Kahler manifold with integral Kahler form, parametrizes a natural holomorphic family of Cauchy-Riemann operators on the Riemann sphere such that the Quillen determinant line bundle of this family is isomorphic to a sufficiently high tensor power of the holomorphic line bundle determined by the integral Kahler form. We also establish a symplectic version of the result. We conjecture that an equivariant version of our result is true.

Topology and Flux of T-Dual Manifolds with Circle Actions

We present an explicit formula for the topology and H-flux of the T-dual of a general type II compactification, significantly generalizing earlier results. Our results apply to T-dualities with respect to any circle action on spacetime. As before, T-duality exchanges type IIA and type IIB string theories. A new consequence is that the T-dual spacetime is a singular space when the fixed point set is non-empty; the singularities correspond to Kaluza-Klein monopoles. We propose that the Ramond-Ramond charges of type II string theories on the singular dual are classified by twisted equivariant cohomology groups. We also include the K-theory approach.

Analytic torsion for twisted de Rham complexes

We define analytic torsion for the twisted de Rham complex, consisting of the spaces of differential forms on a compact oriented Riemannian manifold X valued in a flat vector bundle E, with a differential given by a flat connection on E plus an odd-degree closed differential form H on X. The difficulty lies in the fact that the twisted de Rham complex is only Z_2-graded, and so the definition of analytic torsion in this case uses pseudo-differential operators and residue traces. We show that when dim X is odd, then the twisted analytic torsion is independent of the choice of metrics on X and E and of the representative H in the cohomology class of H. We define twisted analytic torsion in the context of generalized geometry and show that when H is a 3-form, the deformation H -> H - dB, where B is a 2-form on X, is equivalent to deforming a usual metric g to a generalized metric (g,B). We establish some basic functorial properties. When H is a top-degree form, we compute the torsion, define its simplicial counterpart and prove an analogue of the Cheeger-Muller Theorem. We also study the relationship of the analytic torsion for T-dual circle bundles with integral 3-form fluxes.

Bundle gerbes and moduli spaces

In this paper, we construct the index bundle gerbe of a family of self-adjoint Dirac-type operators, refining a construction of Segal. In a special case, we construct a geometric bundle gerbe called the caloron bundle gerbe, which comes with a natural connection and curving, and show that it is isomorphic to the analytically constructed index bundle gerbe. We apply these constructions to certain moduli spaces associated to compact Riemann surfaces, constructing on these moduli spaces, natural bundle gerbes with connection and curving, whose 3-curvature represent Dixmier-Douady classes that are generators of the third de Rham cohomology groups of these moduli spaces.

Operator algebra quantum homogeneous spaces of universal gauge groups

In this paper, we quantize universal gauge groups such as SU(\infty), as well as their homogeneous spaces, in the sigma-C*-algebra setting. More precisely, we propose concise definitions of sigma-C*-quantum groups and sigma-C*-quantum homogeneous spaces and explain these concepts here. At the same time, we put these definitions in the mathematical context of countably compactly generated spaces as well as C*-compact quantum groups and homogeneous spaces. We also study the representable K-theory of these spaces and compute it for the quantum homogeneous spaces associated to the universal gauge group SU(\infty).

Verlinde modules and quantization

Given a compact simple Lie group G and a primitive degree 3 twist h, we define a monoidal category C(G, h) with a May structure. An object in the category C(G, h) is a pair (X, f), where X is a compact G-manifold and f a smooth G-map from X to G with respect to the conjugation action of G on itself. Such an object determines a module, the equivariant twisted K-homology K^G(X, f^*(h)), for the Verlinde algebra, termed a Verlinde module, where the module action is induced by the G-action on X. In order to understand which objects in C(G, h) can be quantized, we define the closely related monoidal category D(G, h) consisting of equivariant twisted geometric K-cycles, which also has a May structure. There is a forgetful functor from D(G, h) to C(G, h), showing that an object in D(G, h) determines a Verlinde module. Every object in the category D(G, h) also has a quantization, valued in the Verlinde algebra. Finally, an equivalence relation ~ is defined on objects in D(G, h) such that the quantization functor determines an algebra isomorphism between the geometric equivariant twisted K-homology groups K^G_{geo}(G, h) = D(G, h))/~, and the Verlinde algebra.

Analytic Torsion of Z_2-graded Elliptic Complexes

We define analytic torsion of Z_2-graded elliptic complexes as an element in the graded determinant line of the cohomology of the complex, generalizing most of the variants of Ray-Singer analytic torsion in the literature. It applies to a myriad of new examples, including flat superconnection complexes, twisted analytic and twisted holomorphic torsions, etc. The definition uses pseudo-differential operators and residue traces. We also study properties of analytic torsion for Z_2-graded elliptic complexes, including the behavior under variation of the metric. For compact odd dimensional manifolds, the analytic torsion is independent of the metric, whereas for even dimensional manifolds, a relative version of the analytic torsion is independent of the metric. Finally, the relation to topological field theories is studied.

Geometric quantization for proper actions

We first introduce an invariant index for G-equivariant elliptic differential operators on a locally compact manifold M admitting a proper cocompact action of a locally compact group G. It generalizes the Kawasaki index for orbifolds to the case of proper cocompact actions. Our invariant index is used to show that an analog of the Guillemin-Sternberg geometric quantization conjecture holds if M is symplectic with a Hamiltonian action of G that is proper and cocompact. This essentially solves a conjecture of Hochs and Landsman.

Twisted Analytic Torsion

We review the Reidemeister torsion, Ray-Singer's analytic torsion and the Cheeger-M"uller theorem. We describe the analytic torsion of the de Rham complex twisted by a flux form introduced by the current authors and recall its properties. We define a new twisted analytic torsion for the complex of invariant differential forms on the total space of a principal circle bundle twisted by an invariant flux form. We show that when the dimension is even, such a torsion is invariant under certain deformation of the metric and the flux form. Under T-duality which exchanges the topology of the bundle and the flux form and the radius of the circular fiber with its inverse, the twisted torsions of invariant forms are inverse to each other for any dimension.

A noncommutative sigma-model

We begin to study a sigma-model in which both the space-time manifold and the two-dimensional string world-sheet are made noncommutative. The most precise results apply to the case where both the space-time manifold and the two-dimensional string world-sheet are replaced by noncommutative tori. In this situation, we are able to determine when maps between such noncommutative tori exist, to derive the Euler-Lagrange equations, to classify many of the critical points of the Lagrangian, and to study the associated partition function.

T-duality for torus bundles with H-fluxes via noncommutative topology, II: the high-dimensional case and the T-duality group

We use noncommutative topology to study T-duality for principal torus bundles with H-flux. We characterize precisely when there is a "classical" T-dual, i.e., a dual bundle with dual H-flux, and when the T-dual must be "non-classical," that is, a continuous field of noncommutative tori. The duality comes with an isomorphism of twisted $K$-theories, required for matching of D-brane charges, just as in the classical case. The isomorphism of twisted cohomology which one gets in the classical case is replaced in the non-classical case by an isomorphism of twisted cyclic homology. An important part of the paper contains a detailed analysis of the classifying space for topological T-duality, as well as the T-duality group and its action. The issue of possible non-uniqueness of T-duals can be studied via the action of the T-duality group.

Nonassociative tori and applications to T-duality

In this paper, we initiate the study of C*-algebras endowed with a twisted action of a locally compact Abelian Lie group, and we construct a twisted crossed product, which is in general a nonassociative, noncommutative, algebra. The properties of this twisted crossed product algebra are studied in detail, and are applied to T-duality in Type II string theory to obtain the T-dual of a general principal torus bundle with general H-flux, which we will argue to be a bundle of noncommutative, nonassociative tori. We also show that this construction of the T-dual includes all of the special cases that were previously analysed.

On mysteriously missing T-duals, H-flux and the T-duality group

A general formula for the topology and H-flux of the T-duals of type II string theories with H-flux on toroidal compactifications is presented here. It is known that toroidal compactifications with H-flux do not necessarily have T-duals which are themselves toroidal compactifications. A big puzzle has been to explain these mysterious ``missing T-duals'', and our paper presents a solution to this problem using noncommutative topology. We also analyze the T-duality group and its action, and illustrate these concepts with examples.

The topological and the analytic index of such a family both take values in twisted K-theory of the parametrizing space, X. The main result is the equality of these two notions of index when the twisting class is in the torsion subgroup of H^3(X;Z). The Chern character of the index class is then computed.

T-duality for torus bundles via noncommutative topology

It is known that the T-dual of a circle bundle with H-flux (given by a Neveu-Schwarz 3-form) is the T-dual circle bundle with dual H-flux. However, it is also known that torus bundles with H-flux do not necessarily have a T-dual which is a torus bundle. A big puzzle has been to explain these mysterious "missing T-duals.'' Here we show that this problem is resolved using noncommutative topology. It turns out that every principal 2-torus-bundle with H-flux does indeed have a T-dual, but in the missing cases (which we characterize), the T-dual is non-classical and is a bundle of noncommutative tori. The duality comes with an isomorphism of twisted K-theories, just as in the classical case. The isomorphism of twisted cohomology which one gets in the classical case is replaced by an isomorphism of twisted cyclic homology.

Chern character in twisted K-theory: equivariant and holomorphic cases

It has been argued by Witten and others that in the presence of a nontrivial B-field, D-brane charges in type IIB string theories are measured by twisted K-theory. In joint work with Bouwknegt, Carey and Murray it was proved that twisted K-theory is canonically isomorphic to bundle gerbe K-theory, whose elements are ordinary vector bundles on a principal projective unitary bundle, with an action of the bundle gerbe determined by the principal projective unitary bundle. The principal projective unitary bundle is in turn determined by the twist. In this paper, we study in more detail the Chern-Weil representative of the Chern character of bundle gerbe K-theory that was introduced previously, and we also extend it to the equivariant and holomorphic cases. Included is a discussion of interesting examples.

Equivariant Holomorphic Morse Inequalities I: A Heat Kernel Proof

Assume that the circle group acts holomorphically on a compact Kähler manifold with isolated fixed points and that the action can be lifted holomorphically to a holomorphic Hermitian vector bundle. We give a heat kernel proof of the equivariant holomorphic Morse inequalities. We use some techniques developed by Bismut and Lebeau. These inequalities, first obtained by Witten using a different argument, produce bounds on the multiplicities of weights occurring in the twisted Dolbeault cohomologies in terms of the data of the fixed points.
