Twisted cohomology

We discuss twisted cohomology, not just for ordinary cohomology but also for $K$-theory and other exceptional cohomology theories, and discuss several of the applications of these in mathematical physics. Our list of applications is by no means exhaustive, but we are hoping that it is extensive enough to give the reader a feel for the possible applications of twisted theories in many different contexts. We also give many suggestions for further reading, but this subject has now expanded to the point where the bibliography is necessarily very incomplete.

A new approach to twisted K-theory of compact Lie groups

This paper explores further the computation of the twisted K-theory and K-homology of compact simple Lie groups, previously studied by Hopkins, Moore, Maldacena-Moore-Seiberg, Braun, and Douglas, with a focus on groups of rank 2. We give a new method of computation based on the Segal spectral sequence which seems to us appreciably simpler than the methods used previously, at least in many key cases. The exposition has been clarified and one mistake in the previous version has been fixed. Also the references have been updated.

Algebraic K-theory and derived equivalences suggested by T-duality for torus orientifolds

We show that certain isomorphisms of (twisted) KR-groups that underlie T-dualities of torus orientifold string theories have purely algebraic analogues in terms of algebraic K-theory of real varieties and equivalences of derived categories of (twisted) coherent sheaves. The most interesting conclusion is a kind of Mukai duality in which the "dual abelian variety" to a smooth projective genus-1 curve over R with no real points is (mildly) noncommutative.

Levi-Civita's Theorem for Noncommutative Tori

We show how to define Riemannian metrics and connections on a noncommutative torus in such a way that an analogue of Levi-Civita's theorem on the existence and uniqueness of a Riemannian connection holds. The major novelty is that we need to use two different notions of noncommutative vector field. Levi-Civita's theorem makes it possible to define Riemannian curvature using the usual formulas.

Structure and applications of real C*-algebras

For a long time, practitioners of the art of operator algebras always worked over the complex numbers, and nobody paid much attention to real C*-algebras. Over the last thirty years, that situation has changed, and it's become apparent that real C*-algebras have a lot of extra structure not evident from their complexifications. At the same time, interest in real C*-algebras has been driven by a number of compelling applications, for example in the classification of manifolds of positive scalar curvature, in representation theory, and in the study of orientifold string theories. We will discuss a number of interesting examples of these, and how the real Baum-Connes conjecture plays an important role.

String theory on elliptic curve orientifolds and KR-theory

We analyze the brane content and charges in all of the orientifold string theories on space-times of the form E x R^8, where E is an elliptic curve with holomorphic or anti-holomorphic involution. Many of these theories involve "twistings" coming from the B-field and/or sign choices on the orientifold planes. A description of these theories from the point of view of algebraic geometry, using the Legendre normal form, naturally divides them into three groupings. The physical theories within each grouping are related to one another via sequences of T-dualities. Our approach agrees with both previous topological calculations of twisted KR-theory and known physics arguments, and explains how the twistings originate from both a mathematical and a physical perspective.

T-duality for circle bundles via noncommutative geometry

Recently Baraglia showed how topological T-duality can be extended to apply not only to principal circle bundles, but also to non-principal circle bundles. We show that his results can also be recovered via two other methods: the homotopy-theoretic approach of Bunke and Schick, and the noncommutative geometry approach which we previously used for principal torus bundles. This work has several interesting byproducts, including a study of the K-theory of crossed products by Isom(R), the universal cover of O(2), and some interesting facts about equivariant K-theory for Z/2. In the final section of this paper, these results are extended to the case of bundles with singular fibers, or in other words, non-free O(2)-actions.

T-duality For Orientifolds and Twisted KR-theory

D-brane charges in orientifold string theories are classified by the KR-theory of Atiyah. However, this is assuming that all O-planes have the same sign. When there are O-planes of different signs, physics demands a "KR-theory with a sign choice" which up until now has not been studied by mathematicians (with the unique exception of Moutuou, who didn't have a specific application in mind). We give a definition of this theory and compute it for orientifold theories compactified on a circle and 2-torus. We also explain how and why additional "twisting" is implemented. We show that our results satisfy all possible T-duality relationships for orientifold string theories on elliptic curves, which will be studied further in subsequent work.

Flux quantization for a superconducting ring in the shape of a Möbius band

We give two derivations of magnetic flux quantization in a superconducting ring in the shape of a Möbius band, one using direct study of the Schrödinger equation and the other using the holonomy of flat U(1)-gauge bundles. Both methods show that the magnetic flux must be quantized in integral or half-integral multiples of $Φ_0=hc/(2e)$. Half-integral quantization shows up in "nodal states" whose wavefunction vanishes along the center of the ring, for which there is now some experimental evidence.

Dualities in Field Theories and the Role of K-Theory

It is now known (or in some cases just believed) that many quantum field theories exhibit dualities, equivalences with the same or a different theory in which things appear very different, but the overall physical implications are the same. We will discuss some of these dualities from the point of view of a mathematician, focusing on "charge conservation" and the role played by K-theory and noncommutative geometry. Some of the work described here is joint with Mathai Varghese and Stefan Mendez-Diez; the last section is new.

K-theoretic matching of brane charges in S- and U-duality

We discuss K-theoretic matching of D-brane charges in the string duality between type I on the 4-torus and type IIA on a K3 surface. This case is more complex than the familiar case of IIA/IIB duality, which is already well understood, but it turns out that replacing K3 by its orbifold blow-down seems largely to resolve the apparent problems with the theory. In particular, this allows for precise matching of 2-torsion brane charges.

A noncommutative sigma-model

We begin to study a sigma-model in which both the space-time manifold and the two-dimensional string world-sheet are made noncommutative. The most precise results apply to the case where both the space-time manifold and the two-dimensional string world-sheet are replaced by noncommutative tori. In this situation, we are able to determine when maps between such noncommutative tori exist, to derive the Euler-Lagrange equations, to classify many of the critical points of the Lagrangian, and to study the associated partition function.

Noncommutative variations on Laplace's equation

As a first step at developing a theory of noncommutative nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations, we analyze noncommutative analogues of Laplace's equation and its variants (some of the them nonlinear) over noncommutative tori. Along the way we prove noncommutative analogues of many results in classical analysis, such as Wiener's Theorem on functions with absolutely convergent Fourier series, and standard existence and non-existence theorems on elliptic functions. We show that many many classical methods, including the Maximum Principle, the direct method of the calculus of variations, the use of the Leray-Schauder Theorem, etc., have analogues in the noncommutative setting.

An analogue of the Novikov Conjecture in complex algebraic geometry

We introduce an analogue of the Novikov Conjecture on higher signatures in the context of the algebraic geometry of (nonsingular) complex projective varieties. This conjecture asserts that certain "higher Todd genera" are birational invariants. This implies birational invariance of certain extra combinations of Chern classes (beyond just the classical Todd genus) in the case of varieties with large fundamental group (in the topological sense). We prove the conjecture under the assumption of the "strong Novikov Conjecture" for the fundamental group, which is known to be correct for many groups of geometric interest. We also show that, in a certain sense, our conjecture is best possible.

T-duality for torus bundles with H-fluxes via noncommutative topology, II: the high-dimensional case and the T-duality group

We use noncommutative topology to study T-duality for principal torus bundles with H-flux. We characterize precisely when there is a "classical" T-dual, i.e., a dual bundle with dual H-flux, and when the T-dual must be "non-classical," that is, a continuous field of noncommutative tori. The duality comes with an isomorphism of twisted $K$-theories, required for matching of D-brane charges, just as in the classical case. The isomorphism of twisted cohomology which one gets in the classical case is replaced in the non-classical case by an isomorphism of twisted cyclic homology. An important part of the paper contains a detailed analysis of the classifying space for topological T-duality, as well as the T-duality group and its action. The issue of possible non-uniqueness of T-duals can be studied via the action of the T-duality group.

On mysteriously missing T-duals, H-flux and the T-duality group

A general formula for the topology and H-flux of the T-duals of type II string theories with H-flux on toroidal compactifications is presented here. It is known that toroidal compactifications with H-flux do not necessarily have T-duals which are themselves toroidal compactifications. A big puzzle has been to explain these mysterious ``missing T-duals'', and our paper presents a solution to this problem using noncommutative topology. We also analyze the T-duality group and its action, and illustrate these concepts with examples.

preprint2004arXiv

T-duality for torus bundles via noncommutative topology

It is known that the T-dual of a circle bundle with H-flux (given by a Neveu-Schwarz 3-form) is the T-dual circle bundle with dual H-flux. However, it is also known that torus bundles with H-flux do not necessarily have a T-dual which is a torus bundle. A big puzzle has been to explain these mysterious "missing T-duals.'' Here we show that this problem is resolved using noncommutative topology. It turns out that every principal 2-torus-bundle with H-flux does indeed have a T-dual, but in the missing cases (which we characterize), the T-dual is non-classical and is a bundle of noncommutative tori. The duality comes with an isomorphism of twisted K-theories, just as in the classical case. The isomorphism of twisted cohomology which one gets in the classical case is replaced by an isomorphism of twisted cyclic homology.

Equivariant Euler characteristics and K-homology Euler classes for proper cocompact G-manifolds

Let G be a countable discrete group and let M be a smooth proper cocompact G-manifold without boundary. The Euler operator defines via Kasparov theory an element, called the equivariant Euler class, in the equivariant K-homology of M. The universal equivariant Euler characteristic of M, which lives in a group U^G(M), counts the equivariant cells of M, taking the component structure of the various fixed point sets into account. We construct a natural homomorphism from U^G(M) to the equivariant KO-homology of M. The main result of this paper says that this map sends the universal equivariant Euler characteristic to the equivariant Euler class. In particular this shows that there are no `higher' equivariant Euler characteristics. We show that, rationally, the equivariant Euler class carries the same information as the collection of the orbifold Euler characteristics of the components of the L-fixed point sets M^L, where L runs through the finite cyclic subgroups of G. However, we give an example of an action of the symmetric group S_3 on the 3-sphere for which the equivariant Euler class has order 2, so there is also some torsion information.

The equivariant Lefschetz fixed point theorem for proper cocompact G-manifolds

Suppose one is given a discrete group G, a cocompact proper G-manifold M, and a G-self-map f of M. Then we introduce the equivariant Lefschetz class of f, which is globally defined in terms of cellular chain complexes, and the local equivariant Lefschetz class of f, which is locally defined in terms of fixed point data. We prove the equivariant Lefschetz fixed point theorem, which says that these two classes agree. As a special case, we prove an equivariant Poincare-Hopf Theorem, computing the universal equivariant Euler characteristic in terms of the zeros of an equivariant vector field, and also obtain an orbifold Lefschetz fixed point theorem. Finally, we prove a realization theorem for universal equivariant Euler characteristics.

Groupoid C*-algebras and index theory on manifolds with singularities

The simplest case of a manifold with singularities is a manifold M with boundary, together with an identification of the boundary with a product M1 x P, where P is a fixed manifold. The associated singular space is obtained by collapsing P to a point. When P = Z/k or S^1, we show how to attach to such a space a noncommutative C*-algebra that captures the extra structure. We then use this C*-algebra to give a new proof of the Freed-Melrose Z/k-index theorem and a proof of an index theorem for manifolds with S^1 singularities. Our proofs apply to the real as well as to the complex case. Applications are given to the study of metrics of positive scalar curvature.

The Yamabe invariant for non-simply connected manifolds

The Yamabe invariant is an invariant of a closed smooth manifold defined using conformal geometry and the scalar curvature. Recently, Petean showed that the Yamabe invariant is non-negative for all closed simply connected manifolds of dimension $\ge 5$. We extend this to show that Yamabe invariant is non-negative for all closed manifolds of dimension $\ge 5$ with fundamental group of odd order having all Sylow subgroups abelian. The main new geometric input is a way of studying the Yamabe invariant on Toda brackets. A similar method of proof shows that all closed manifolds of dimension $\ge 5$ with fundamental group of odd order having all Sylow subgroups elementary abelian, with non-spin universal cover, admit metrics of positive scalar curvature, once one restricts to the ``complement'' of manifolds whose homology classes are ``toral.'' The exceptional toral homology classes only exist in dimensions not exceeding the ``rank'' of the fundamental group, so this proves important cases of the Gromov-Lawson-Rosenberg Conjecture once the dimension is sufficiently large.

preprint1998arXiv

The K-homology class of the Euler characteristic operator is trivial

On any manifold M^n, the de Rham operator D=d+d^* (with respect to a complete Riemannian metric), with the grading of forms by parity of degree, gives rise by Kasparov theory to a class [D] in KO_0(M), which when M is closed maps to the Euler characteristic chi(M) in KO_0(point) = Z. The purpose of this note is to give a quick proof of the (perhaps unfortunate) fact that [D] is as trivial as it could be subject to this constraint. More precisely, if M is connected, [D] lies in the image of Z = KO_0(point) in KO_0(M) (induced by the inclusion of a basepoint).

Rigidity of K-theory under deformation quantization

Quantization, at least in some formulations, involves replacing some algebra of observables by a (more non-commutative) deformed algebra. In view of the fundamental role played by K-theory in non-commutative geometry and topology, it is of interest to ask to what extent K-theory remains "rigid" under this process. We show that some positive results can be obtained using ideas of Gabber, Gillet-Thomason, and Suslin. From this we derive that the algebraic K-theory with finite coefficients of a deformation quantization of the functions on a compact symplectic manifold, forgetting the topology, recovers the topological K-theory of the manifold.
