Full superconducting gap in the candidate topological superconductor In$_{1-x}$Pb$_x$Te for x = 0.2

High-pressure synthesis techniques have allowed for the growth of samples on the indium-rich side of (Pb,In)Te, which have increased superconducting transition temperatures compared to lead-rich compounds. In this study we present measurements of the temperature dependence of the London penetration depth $Δλ(T)$ in the compound In$_{0.8}$Pb$_{0.2}$Te, which shows a bulk $T_{c,onset}$ of $\sim4.75$ K. The results indicate fully gapped BCS-like behavior, ruling out odd-parity, topologically nontrivial $A_{2u}$ pairing; however, odd-parity $A_{1u}$ pairing is still possible. Critical field values measured below 1 K and other superconducting parameters are also presented.

Key directions for research and development of superconducting radio frequency cavities

Radio frequency superconductivity is a cornerstone technology for many future HEP particle accelerators and experiments from colliders to proton drivers for neutrino facilities to searches for dark matter. While the performance of superconducting RF (SRF) cavities has improved significantly over the last decades, and the SRF technology has enabled new applications, the proposed HEP facilities and experiments pose new challenges. To address these challenges, the field continues to generate new ideas and there seems to be a vast room for improvements. In this paper we discuss the key research directions that are aligned with and address the future HEP needs.

Multimodal synchrotron X-ray diffraction across the superconducting transition of Sr$_{0.1}$Bi$_2$Se$_3$

In the doped topological insulator Sr$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$, a pronounced in-plane two-fold symmetry is observed in electronic properties below the superconducting transition temperature $T_c \sim$ 3 K, despite the three-fold symmetry of the observed $R\bar{3}m$ space group. The axis of two-fold symmetry is nominally pinned to one of three rotational equivalent directions and crystallographic strain has been proposed to be the origin of this pinning. We carried out multimodal synchrotron diffraction and resistivity measurements down to $\sim$0.68 K and in magnetic fields up to 45 kG on a single crystal of Sr$_{0.1}$Bi$_2$Se$_3$ to probe the effect of superconductivity on the crystallographic distortion. Our results indicate that there is no in-plane crystallographic distortion at the level of $1x10^{-5}$ associated with the superconducting transition. These results further support the model that the large two-fold in-plane anisotropy of superconducting properties of Sr$_x$Bi$_2$Sr$_3$ is not structural in origin but electronic, namely it is caused by a nematic superconducting order parameter of Eu symmetry.

Superconducting properties of the spin Hall candidate Ta3Sb with eightfold degeneracy

We report the synthesis and characterization of phase pure Ta3Sb, a material predicted to be topological with eightfold degenerate fermionic states [Science 353, aaf5037 (2016)] and to exhibit a large spin Hall effect [Sci. Adv. 5, eaav8575 (2019]. We observe superconductivity in Ta3Sb with Tc~ 0.67 K in both electrical resistivity \r{ho}(T) and specific heat C(T) measurements. Field dependent measurements yield the superconducting phase diagram with an upper critical field of Hc2(0) ~ 0.95 T, corresponding to a superconducting coherence length of ξ ~18.6 nm. The gap ratio deduced from specific heat anomaly, 2Δ0/kBTc is 3.46, a value close to the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) value of 3.53. From a detailed analysis of both the transport and thermodynamic data within the Ginsburg-Landau (GL) framework, a GL parameter of \k{appa} ~90 is obtained identifying Ta3Sb as an extreme type-II superconductor. The observation of superconductivity in an eightfold degenerate fermionic compound with topological surface states and predicted large spin Hall conductance positions Ta3Sb as an appealing platform to further explore exotic quantum states in multifold degenerate systems.

Nodeless superconducting gap in the candidate topological superconductor Sn$_{1-x}$In$_x$Te for x = 0.7

High-pressure synthesis techniques have allowed for the growth of Sn$_{1-x}$In$_x$Te samples beyond the ambient In-saturation limit of $x$ = 0.5 (T$_c \sim$ 4.5 K). In this study, we present measurements of the temperature dependence of the London penetration depth $Δλ(T)$ in this superconducting doped topological insulator for $x$ = 0.7, where T$_{c,onset}\approx 5$ K. The results indicate fully gapped BCS-like behavior, ruling out odd-parity $A_{2u}$ pairing; however, odd-parity $A_{1u}$ pairing is still possible. Critical field values measured below 1 K and other superconducting parameters are also presented.

Magnetic and superconducting anisotropy in Ni-doped RbEuFe$_4$As$_4$ single crystals

We investigate the effect of Ni doping on the Fe-site in single crystals of the magnetic superconductor RbEuFe$_4$As$_4$ for doping concentrations of up to 4%. A clear suppression in the superconducting transition temperature is observed in specific heat, resistivity and magnetization measurements. Upon Ni-doping, the resistivity curves shift up in a parallel fashion indicating a strong increase of the residual resistivity due to scattering by charged dopand atoms while the shape of the curve and thus the electronic structure appears largely unchanged. The observed step $ΔC/T_c$ at the superconducting transition decreases strongly for increasing Ni doping in agreement with expectations based on a model of multi-band superconductivity and strong inter-band pairing. The upper critical field slopes are reduced upon Ni doping for in- as well as out-of-plane fields leading to a small reduction in the superconducting anisotropy. The specific heat measurements of the magnetic transition reveal the same BKT behavior close to the transition temperature $T_m$ for all doping levels. The transition temperature is essentially unchanged upon doping. The in to out-of-plane anisotropy of Eu-magnetism observed at small magnetic fields is unaltered as compared to the undoped compound. All of these observations indicate a decoupling of the Eu magnetism from superconductivity and essentially no influence of Ni doping on the Eu magnetism in this compound.

Decoupling and tuning competing effects of different types of defects on flux creep in irradiated YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ coated conductors

YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ coated conductors (CCs) have achieved high critical current densities ($\textit{J}_{c}$) that can be further increased through the introduction of additional defects using particle irradiation. However, these gains are accompanied by increases in the flux creep rate, a manifestation of competition between the different types of defects. Here, we study this competition to better understand how to design pinning landscapes that simultaneously increase $\textit{J}_{c}$ and reduce creep. CCs grown by metal organic deposition show non-monotonic changes in the temperature-dependent creep rate, $\textit{S}(\textit{T})$. Notably, in low fields, there is a conspicuous dip to low $\textit{S}$ as temperature ($\textit{T}$) increases from ~20 K to ~65 K. Oxygen-, proton-, and Au-irradiation substantially increase $\textit{S}$ in this temperature range. Focusing on an oxygen-irradiated CC, we investigate the contribution of different types of irradiation-induced defects to the flux creep rate. Specifically, we study $\textit{S}(\textit{T})$ as we tune the relative density of point defects to larger defects by annealing both an as-grown and an irradiated CC in O$_{2}$ at temperatures $\textit{T}_{A}$ = 250$°$C to 600$°$C. We observe a steady decrease in $\textit{S}$($\textit{T}$ > 20 K) with increasing $\textit{T}_{A}$, unveiling the role of pre-existing nanoparticle precipitates in creating the dip in $\textit{S}(\textit{T})$ and point defects and clusters in increasing $\textit{S}$ at intermediate temperatures.

Evidence of nodes in the order parameter of the superconducting doped topological insulator Nb$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$ via penetration depth measurements

The low-temperature variation of the London penetration depth $λ(T)$ in the candidate topological superconductor Nb$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$ (x = 0.25) is reported for several crystals. The measurements were carried out by means of a tunnel-diode oscillator (TDO) technique in both field orientations ($H_{rf} \parallel$ $c$ and $H_{rf} \parallel$ $ab$ planes). All samples exhibited power law behavior at low temperatures ($Δλ\sim T^2$) clearly indicating the presence of point nodes in the superconducting order parameter. The results presented here are consistent with a nematic odd-parity spin-triplet $E_u$ pairing state in Nb$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$.

Toward superconducting critical current by design

We present the new paradigm of critical current by design. Analogous to materials by design, it aims at predicting the optimal defect landscape in a superconductor for targeted applications by elucidating the vortex dynamics responsible for the bulk critical current. To highlight this approach, we demonstrate the synergistic combination of critical current measurements on commercial high-temperature superconductors containing self-assembled and irradiation tailored correlated defects by using large-scale time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau simulations for vortex dynamics.

Microscopic Parameters from High-Resolution Specific Heat Measurements on Overdoped BaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$ Single Crystals

We investigate the electronic specific heat of overdoped BaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$ single crystals in the superconducting state using high-resolution nanocalorimetry. From the measurements, we extract the doping dependence of the condensation energy, superconducting gap $Δ$, and related microscopic parameters. We find that the anomalous scaling of the specific heat jump $ΔC \propto T_{\mathrm{c}}^3$, found in many iron-based superconductors, in this system originates from a $T_\mathrm{c}$-dependent ratio $Δ/k_\mathrm{B}T_\mathrm{c}$ in combination with a doping-dependent density of states $N(\varepsilon_\mathrm{F})$. A clear enhancement is seen in the effective mass $m^{*}$ as the composition approaches the value that has been associated with a quantum critical point at optimum doping. However, a simultaneous increase in the superconducting carrier concentration $n_\mathrm{s}$ maintains the superfluid density, yielding an apparent penetration depth $λ$ that decreases with increasing $T_\mathrm{c}$ without sharp divergence at the quantum critical point. Uemura scaling indicates that $T_\mathrm{c}$ is governed by the Fermi temperature $T_\mathrm{F}$ for this multi-band system.

Superconducting gap evolution in overdoped BaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ single crystals through nanocalorimetry

We report on specific heat measurements on clean overdoped $\mathrm{BaFe_{2}(As_{1-x}P_x)_2}$ single crystals performed with a high resolution membrane-based nanocalorimeter. A nonzero residual electronic specific heat coefficient at zero temperature $γ_\mathrm{r}={C/T}|_{T \to 0}$ is seen for all doping compositions, indicating a considerable fraction of the Fermi surface ungapped or having very deep minima. The remaining superconducting electronic specific heat is analyzed through a two-band s-wave $α$ model in order to investigate the gap structure. Close to optimal doping we detect a single zero-temperature gap of $Δ_0 \sim 5.3\,\mathrm{meV}$, corresponding to $Δ_0 / k_\mathrm{B} T_\mathrm{c} \sim 2.2$. Increasing the phosphorus concentration $x$, the main gap reduces till a value of $Δ_0 \sim 1.9\,\mathrm{meV}$ for $x = 0.55$ and a second weaker gap becomes evident. From the magnetic field effect on $γ_\mathrm{r}$, all samples however show similar behavior [$γ_\mathrm{r}(H) - γ_\mathrm{r}(H=0) \propto H^n$, with $n$ between 0.6 and 0.7]. This indicates that, despite a considerable redistribution of the gap weights, the total degree of gap anisotropy does not change drastically with doping.

Stripe Domains and First Order Phase Transition in the Vortex Matter of Anisotropic High-temperature Superconductors

We report the direct imaging of a novel modulated flux striped domain phase in a nearly twin-free YBCO crystal. These domains arise from instabilities in the vortex structure within a narrow region of tilted magnetic fields at small angles from the in-plane direction. By comparing the experimental and theoretically derived vortex phase diagrams we infer that the stripe domains emerge from a first order phase transition of the vortex structure. The size of domains containing vortices of certain orientations is controlled by the balance between the vortex stray field energy and the positive energy of the domain boundaries. Our results confirm the existence of the kinked vortex chain phase in an anisotropic high temperature superconductor and reveal a sharp transition in the state of this phase resulting in regular vortex domains.

Dirac Fermions and Superconductivity in Homologous Structures (AgxPb1-xSe)5(Bi2Se3)3m,m = 1,2

A newly discovered topological insulator (AgxPb1-xSe)5(Bi2Se3)3m, m=2, has a band gap of 0.5 eV, the largest value ever reported in topological insulators (TIs). We present a magnetoconductivity study of the Dirac electrons of this compound in the quantum diffusion regime. Two dimensional weak antilocalization was observed and identified as destructive interference caused by the Berry phase of this topological state. We find that the phase coherence length of the Dirac electrons is independent of doping and disorder levels. This provides proof for the absence of backscattering arising from the protection of time reversal invariance in TI (AgxPb1-xSe)5(Bi2Se3)3m, m=2. We further report that the homologous compound (AgxPb1-xSe)5(Bi2Se3)3m, m=1 is a superconductor with a transition temperature Tc = 1.7 K. The related structures of these two phases allow lateral intergrowth of crystals to occur naturally, offering an opportunity to observe the Majorana Fermion state at the boundary of two intergrown crystals.

Direct imaging of hot spots in Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ} mesa terahertz sources

Stacks of intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs) made from high-temperature superconductors such as Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ} (Bi-2212) are a promising source of coherent continuous-wave terahertz radiation. It is thought that at electrical bias conditions under which THz-emission occurs hot spots may form due to resistive self-heating, and that these spots may be highly beneficial for the generation of high levels of THz power. Here we perform an imaging study of the temperature distribution at the surface of BSCCO stacks utilizing the temperature-dependent 612nm fluorescence line of Eu^{3+} in a europium chelate. The images directly reveal a highly non-uniform temperature distribution in which the temperature in the middle of the stack can exceed the superconducting transition temperature by tens of Kelvin under biasing conditions typical for THz-emission.

Doubling the Critical Current Density of High Temperature Superconducting Coated Conductors through Proton Irradiation

The in-field critical current of commercial YBa2Cu3O7 coated conductors can be substantially enhanced by post-fabrication irradiation with 4 MeV protons. Irradiation to a fluence of 8x10^16 p/cm^2 induces a near doubling of the critical current in fields of 6 T || c at a temperature of 27 K, a field and temperature range of interest for applications such as rotating machinery. A mixed pinning landscape of preexisting precipitates and twin boundaries and small, finely dispersed irradiation induced defects may account for the improved vortex pinning in high magnetic fields. Our data indicate that there is significant head-room for further enhancements.

Effect of heavy-ion irradiation on London penetration depth in over-doped Ba(Fe,Co)2As2

Irradiation with 1.4 GeV $^{208}$Pb ions was used to induce artificial disorder in single crystals of iron-arsenide superconductor Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ and to study its effect on the temperature-dependent London penetration depth and transport properties. Study was undertaken on overdoped single crystals with $x$=0.108 and $x$=0.127 characterized by notable modulation of the superconducting gap. Irradiation with doses 2.22$\times10^{11}$$\textit{d}$/cm$^2$ and 2.4$\times10^{11}$$\textit{d}$/cm$^2$, corresponding to the matching fields of $B_ϕ = $6 T and 6.5 T, respectively, suppresses the superconducting $T_c$ by approximately 0.3 to 1 K. The variation of the low-temperature penetration depth in both pristine and irradiated samples is well described by the power-law, $Δλ(T)=AT^n$. Irradiation increases the magnitude of the pre-factor $A$ and decreases the exponent $n$, similar to the effect of irradiation in optimally doped samples. This finding supports universal $s_{\pm}$ pairing in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ compounds for the whole Co doping range.

Effect of Heavy-Ion Irradiation on Superconductivity in Single Crystals of Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 Pnictide Superconductor

The London penetration depth was measured in optimally doped Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 crystals, with and without columnar defects produced by 1.4 GeV 208Pb irradiation. The low temperature behavior of unirradiated samples was consistent with a fully gapped superconducting state with a minimum energy gap delta_min/(k_B T_C) = 1. Similar gap values were observed for irradiation levels corresponding to mean column-column separations of 32 nm and 22 nm. At very high irradiation levels (column-column separation of 10 nm) a T^2 power law was observed below Tc/3, most likely due to elevated scattering. Neither the location nor the sharpness of the superconducting transition was affected by irradiation. The data provides evidence for an s+/- pairing state.

Powerful terahertz emission from Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta mesa arrays

Stacks of intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs) in high-temperature superconductors enable the fabrication of compact sources of coherent terahertz radiation. Here we demonstrate that multiple stacks patterned on the same Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta crystal can - under optimized conditions - be synchronized to emit high-power THz-radiation. For three synchronized stacks we achieved 610 microwatts of continuous-wave coherent radiation power at 0.51 THz. We suggest that synchronization is promoted by THz-waves in the base crystal. We note though that synchronization cannot be achieved in all samples. However, even in these cases powers on the 100-microwatt scale can be generated.

The chiral phase transition in charge ordered 1T-TiSe2

It was recently discovered that the low temperature, charge ordered phase of 1T-TiSe2 has a chiral character. This unexpected chirality in a system described by a scalar order parameter could be explained in a model where the emergence of relative phase shifts between three charge density wave components breaks the inversion symmetry of the lattice. Here, we present experimental evidence for the sequence of phase transitions predicted by that theory, going from disorder to non-chiral and finally to chiral charge order. Employing X-ray diffraction, specific heat, and electrical transport measurements, we find that a novel phase transition occurs ~7 K below the main charge ordering transition in TiSe2, in agreement with the predicted hierarchy of charge ordered phases.

Catalyst-Free Growth of Millimeter-Long Topological Insulator Bi2Se3 Nanoribbons and the Observation of pi Berry Phase

We report the growth of single-crystalline Bi2Se3 nanoribbons with lengths up to several millimeters via a catalyst-free physical vapor deposition method. Scanning transmission electron microscopy analysis reveals that the nanoribbons grow along the (1120) direction. We obtain a detailed characterization of the electronic structure of the Bi2Se3 nanoribbons from measurements of Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) quantum oscillations. Angular dependent magneto-transport measurements reveal a dominant two-dimensional contribution originating from surface states and weak contribution from the bulk states. The catalyst-free synthesis yields high-purity nanocrystals enabling the observation of a large number of SdH oscillation periods and allowing for an accurate determination of the pi-Berry phase, one of the key features of Dirac fermions in topological insulators. The long-length nanoribbons can empower the potential for fabricating multiple nanoelectronic devices on a single nanoribbon.

Anisotropic Phase Diagram and Superconducting Fluctuations in SmFeAsO0.85F0.15

We report on the specific heat determination of the anisotropic phase diagram of single crystals of optimally doped SmFeAsO1-xFx. In zero-field, the optimally doped compound displays a clear cusp-like anomaly in C/T with ΔC/Tc = 24 mJ/molK2 at Tc = 49.5 K. In magnetic fields applied along the c-axis, we find pronounced superconducting fluctuations induced broadening and suppression of the specific heat anomaly which can be described using three-dimensional lowest-Landau-level scaling with an upper critical field slope of -3.5 T/K and an anisotropy of Γ = 8. The small value of ΔC/Tc yields a Sommerfeld coefficient γ ~ 8 mJ/molK2 indicating that SmFeAsO1-xFx is characterized by a modest density of states and strong coupling.

Doping and Irradiation Controlled Vortex Pinning Behavior in BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 Single Crystals

We report on the systematic evolution of vortex pinning behavior in isovalent doped single crystals of BaFe2(As1-xPx)2. Proceeding from optimal doped to ovedoped samples, we find a clear transfor- mation of the magnetization hysteresis from a fishtail behavior to a distinct peak effect followed by a reversible magnetization and Bean Livingston surface barriers. Strong point pinning dominates the vortex behavior at low fields whereas weak collective pinning determines the behavior at higher fields. In addition to doping effects, we show that particle irradiation by energetic protons can tune vortex pinning in these materials.

Doping dependence of the specific heat of single crystal BaFe2(As1-xPx)2

We present specific heat measurements on a series of BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 single crystals with phosphorous doping ranging from x = 0.3 to 0.55. Our results reveal that BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 follows the scaling Delta_C/Tc ~ Tc^2 remarkably well. The clean-limit nature of this material imposes new restraints on theories aimed at explaining the scaling. Furthermore, we find that the Ginzburg-Landau parameter decreases significantly with doping whereas the superconducting anisotropy is gamma~2.6, independent of doping.

Optical Excitation and Decay Dynamics of Ytterbium Atoms Embedded in a Solid Neon Matrix

Neutral ytterbium atoms embedded in solid neon qualitatively retain the structure of free atoms. Despite the atom-solid interaction, the 6s6p $^3$P$_0$ level is found to remain metastable with its lifetimes determined to be in the range of ten to hundreds of seconds. The atomic population can be almost completely transferred between the ground level and the metastable level via optical excitation and spontaneous decay. The dynamics of this process is examined, and is used to explicitly demonstrate that the transition broadening mechanism is homogeneous.

Tunable terahertz emission from Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ mesa devices

We have measured coherent terahertz emission spectra from Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ mesa devices, as a function of temperature and mesa bias voltage. The emission frequency is found to be tunable by up to 12% by varying the temperature and bias voltage. We attribute the appearance of tunability to asymmetric boundaries at the top and bottom, and the non-rectangular cross-section of the mesas. This interpretation is consistent with numerical simulations of the dynamics of intrinsic Josephson junctions in the mesa. Easily tunable emission frequency may have important implications for the design of terahertz devices based on stacked intrinsic Josephson junctions.

London penetration depth in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$T$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ (T=Co, Ni) superconductors irradiated with heavy ions

Irradiation with Pb ions was used to study the effect of disorder on the in-plane London penetration depth, $λ(T)$, in single crystals of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$T$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ (T=Co, Ni). An increase of the irradiation dose results in a monotonic decrease of the superconducting transition temperature, $T_c$, without affecting much the transition width. In both Co and Ni doped systems we find a power-law behavior, $Δλ(T) \propto T^n$, with the exponent $n$ systematically decreasing with the increase of disorder. This observation, supported by the theoretical analysis, conclusively points to a nodeless $s^\pm$ state with pairbreaking impurity scattering (interband) with strength being intermediate between Born and unitary limits.

Magneto-optical study of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$T$_{x}$)$_2$As$_2$ (T=Co, Ni) single crystals irradiated with heavy-ions

Optimally doped single crystals of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$T$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ (T=Co, Ni) were irradiated with 1.4 GeV $^{208}$Pb$^{56+}$ ions at fluences corresponding to matching fields of $B_ϕ=0.1, 0.5, 1$ and 2 T. Magneto-optical imaging has been used to map the distribution of the magnetic induction in the irradiated samples. The imaging is complemented by the magnetization measurements. The results show a substantial enhancement of the apparent critical current densities as revealed by the much larger Bean penetration fields and an increase of the hysteretic magnetization. However, the effect depends on the compound, temperature and applied magnetic field. In \FeCo crystals, at 15 K and low fields, the enhancement appears to scale with the irradiation dose at a rate of about 0.27 MA$\cdot$cm$^{-2}$T$^{-1}$, whereas in \FeNi crystals, higher irradiation doses are less effective. Our results suggest that moderate irradiation with heavy ions is a an effective way to \emph{homogeneously} enhance the current-currying capabilities of pnictide superconductors.

Muon spin rotation study of the magnetic penetration depth in the intercalated graphite superconductor CaC6

We report temperature- and magnetic field-dependent bulk muon spin rotation measurements in a c-axis oriented superconductor CaC6 in the mixed state. Using both a simple second moment analysis and the more precise analytical Ginzburg-Landau model, we obtained a field independent in-plane magnetic penetration depth λab (0) = 72(3) nm. The temperature dependencies of the normalized muon spin relaxation rate and of the normalized superfluid density result to be identical, and both are well represented by the clean limit BCS model with 2Δ/kB Tc = 3.6(1), suggesting that CaC6 is a fully gapped BCS superconductor in the clean limit regime.

Emission of Terahertz Waves from Stacks of Intrinsic Josephson Junctions

By patterning mesoscopic crystals of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (BSCCO) into electromagnetic resonators the oscillations of a large number of intrinsic Josephson junctions can be synchronized into a macroscopic coherent state accompanied by the emission of strong continuous wave THz-radiation. The temperature dependence of the emission is governed by the interplay of self-heating in the resonator and by re-trapping of intrinsic Josephson junctions which can yield a strongly nonmonotonic temperature dependence of the emission power. Furthermore, proper shaping of the resonators yields THzsources with voltage-tunable emission frequencies.

Thermal Management in Large Bi2212 Mesas used for Terahertz Sources

We present a thermal analysis of a patterned mesa on a Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (Bi2212) single crystal that is based on tunneling characteristics of the c-axis stack of ~800 intrinsic Josephson junctions in the mesa. Despite the large mesa volume (e.g., 40x300x1.2 micron3) and power dissipation that result in selfheating and backbending of the current-voltage curve (I-V), there are accessible bias conditions for which significant polarized THz-wave emission can be observed. We estimate the mesa temperature by equating the quasiparticle resistance, Rqp(T), to the ratio V/I over the entire I-V including the backbending region. These temperatures are used to predict the unpolarized black-body radiation reaching our bolometer and there is substantial agreement over the entire I-V. As such, backbending results from the particular Rqp(T) for Bi2212, as first discussed by Fenton, rather than a significant suppression of the energy gap. This model also correctly predicts the observed disappearance of backbending above ~60 K.

Surface Contribution to the Superconducting Properties of MgB2 Single Crystals

We demonstrate direct evidence of possible surface superconductivity on small, well-shaped MgB2 single crystals. Transport measurements in the range H < 1.6 Hc2^c, where Hc2^c is the bulk upper critical field for the c axis, show non-Ohmic and strongly angular dependent resistivity. Studies of the alignment of H with selected crystal surfaces, transport and specific heat measurements on the same crystal, and a physical sculpturing of the crystal surfaces using a focused ion beam all support the conclusion. Similar, albeit less pronounced results are obtained for fields in the basal plane.

Two-band Effects in the Angular Dependence of Hc2 of MgB2 Single Crystals

The angular dependence of the upper critical field Hc2 of MgB2 single crystals is studied at various temperatures by means of specific heat and transport measurements in magnetic fields up to 17 T. Clear deviations from Ginzburg-Landau behavior are observed at all temperatures and are explained by two-band effects. The angular- and temperature dependence of the deviations are in qualitative agreement with theoretical predictions based on band-structure calculations. Quantitative agreement is obtained with an interband coupling slightly stronger than the calculated, enabling band-structure anisotropies and interband coupling strength to be experimentally estimated. This provides a new pathway to the study of disorder and doping effects in MgB2.

Electrostatically-Driven Granular Media: Phase Transitions and Coarsening

We report the experimental and theoretical study of electrostatically driven granular material. We show that the charged granular medium undergoes a hysteretic first order phase transition from the immobile condensed state (granular solid) to a fluidized dilated state (granular gas) with a changing applied electric field. In addition we observe a spontaneous precipitation of dense clusters from the gas phase and subsequent coarsening - coagulation of these clusters. Molecular dynamics simulations shows qualitative agreement with experimental results.

Controlled Dynamics of Interfaces in a Vibrated Granular Layer

We present experimental study of a topological excitation, {\it interface}, in a vertically vibrated layer of granular material. We show that these interfaces, separating regions of granular material oscillation with opposite phases, can be shifted and controlled by a very small amount of an additional subharmonic signal, mixed with the harmonic driving signal. The speed and the direction of interface motion depends sensitively on the phase and the amplitude of the subharmonic driving.
