Big polynomial rings and Stillman's conjecture

The purpose of this paper is to prove that certain limits of polynomial rings are themselves polynomial rings, and show how this observation can be used to deduce some interesting results in commutative algebra. In particular, we give two new proofs of Stillman's conjecture. The first is similar to that of Ananyan-Hochster, though more streamlined; in particular, it establishes the existence of small subalgebras. The second proof is completely different, and relies on a recent noetherianity result of Draisma.

The representation theory of Brauer categories II: curried algebra

A representation of $\mathfrak{gl}(V)=V \otimes V^*$ is a linear map $μ\colon \mathfrak{gl}(V) \otimes M \to M$ satisfying a certain identity. By currying, giving a linear map $μ$ is equivalent to giving a linear map $a \colon V \otimes M \to V \otimes M$, and one can translate the condition for $μ$ to be a representation to a condition on $a$. This alternate formulation does not use the dual of $V$, and makes sense for any object $V$ in a tensor category $\mathcal{C}$. We call such objects representations of the curried general linear algebra on $V$. The currying process can be carried out for many algebras built out of a vector space and its dual, and we examine several cases in detail. We show that many well-known combinatorial categories are equivalent to the curried forms of familiar Lie algebras in the tensor category of linear species; for example, the titular Brauer category "is" the curried form of the symplectic Lie algebra. This perspective puts these categories in a new light, has some technical applications, and suggests new directions to explore.

Bi-graded Koszul modules, K3 carpets, and Green's conjecture

We extend the theory of Koszul modules to the bi-graded case, and prove a vanishing theorem that allows us to show that the Canonical Ribbon Conjecture of Bayer and Eisenbud holds over a field of characteristic zero or at least equal to the Clifford index. Our results confirm a conjecture of Eisenbud and Schreyer regarding the characteristics where the generic statement of Green's conjecture holds. They also recover and extend to positive characteristics results due to Aprodu and Voisin asserting that Green's Conjecture holds for generic curves of each gonality.

Hermite reciprocity and Schwarzenberger bundles

Hermite reciprocity refers to a series of natural isomorphisms involving compositions of symmetric, exterior, and divided powers of the standard $SL_2$-representation. We survey several equivalent constructions of these isomorphisms, as well as their recent applications to Green's Conjecture on syzygies of canonical curves. The most geometric approach to Hermite reciprocity is based on an idea of Voisin to realize certain multilinear constructions cohomologically by working on a Hilbert scheme of points. We explain how in the case of ${\bf P}^1$ this can be reformulated in terms of cohomological properties of Schwarzenberger bundles. We then proceed to study these bundles from several perspectives: We show that their exterior powers have supernatural cohomology, arising as special cases of a construction of Eisenbud and Schreyer. We recover basic properties of secant varieties $Σ$ of rational normal curves (normality, Cohen-Macaulayness, rational singularities) by considering their desingularizations via Schwarzenberger bundles, and applying the Kempf-Weyman geometric technique. We show that Hermite reciprocity is equivalent to the self-duality of the unique rank one Ulrich module on the affine cone $\widehatΣ$ of some secant variety, and we explain how for a Schwarzenberger bundle of rank $k$ and degree $d\ge k$, Hermite reciprocity can be viewed as the unique (up to scaling) non-zero section of $(Sym^k\mathcal{E})(-d+k-1)$.

On some modules supported in the Chow variety

The study of Chow varieties of decomposable forms lies at the confluence of algebraic geometry, commutative algebra, representation theory and combinatorics. There are many open questions about homological properties of Chow varieties and interesting classes of modules supported on them. The goal of this note is to survey some fundamental constructions and properties of these objects, and to propose some new directions of research. Our main focus will be on the study of certain maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules of covariants supported on Chow varieties, and on defining equations and syzygies. We also explain how to assemble Tor groups over Veronese subalgebras into modules over a Chow variety, leading to a result on the polynomial growth of these groups.

Sp-equivariant modules over polynomial rings in infinitely many variables

We study the category of Sp-equivariant modules over the infinite variable polynomial ring, where Sp denotes the infinite symplectic group. We establish a number of results about this category: for instance, we show that every finitely generated module M fits into an exact triangle $T \to M \to F \to$ where T is a finite length complex of torsion modules and F is a finite length complex of "free" modules; we determine the Grothendieck group; and we (partially) determine the structure of injective modules. We apply these results to show that the twisted commutative algebras ${\rm Sym}({\bf C}^{\infty} \oplus \bigwedge^2{\bf C}^{\infty})$ and ${\rm Sym}({\bf C}^{\infty} \oplus {\rm Sym}^2{\bf C}^{\infty})$ are noetherian, which are the strongest results to date of this kind. We also show that the free 2-step nilpotent twisted Lie algebra and Lie superalgebra are noetherian.

Supersymmetric monoidal categories

We develop the idea of a supersymmetric monoidal supercategory, following ideas of Kapranov. Roughly, this is a monoidal category in which the objects and morphisms are ${\bf Z}/2$-graded, equipped with isomorphisms $X \otimes Y \to Y \otimes X$ of parity $\vert X \vert \vert Y \vert$ on homogeneous objects. There are two fundamental examples: the groupoid of spin-sets, and the category of queer vector spaces equipped with the half tensor product; other important examples can be derived from these (such as the category of linear spin species). There are also two general constructions. The first is the exterior algebra of a supercategory (due to Ganter--Kapranov). The second is a construction we introduce called Clifford eversion. This defines an equivalence between a certain 2-category of supersymmetric monoidal supercategories and a corresponding 2-category of symmetric monoidal supercategories. We use our theory to better understand some aspects of the queer superalgebra, such as certain factors of $\sqrt{2}$ in the theory of Q-symmetric functions and Schur--Sergeev duality.

Stability in the homology of unipotent groups

Let $R$ be a (not necessarily commutative) ring whose additive group is finitely generated and let $U_n(R) \subset GL_n(R)$ be the group of upper-triangular unipotent matrices over $R$. We study how the homology groups of $U_n(R)$ vary with $n$ from the point of view of representation stability. Our main theorem asserts that if for each $n$ we have representations $M_n$ of $U_n(R)$ over a ring $\mathbf{k}$ that are appropriately compatible and satisfy suitable finiteness hypotheses, then the rule $[n] \mapsto \widetilde{H}_i(U_n(R),M_n)$ defines a finitely generated OI-module. As a consequence, if $\mathbf{k}$ is a field then $dim \widetilde{H}_i(U_n(R),\mathbf{k})$ is eventually equal to a polynomial in $n$. We also prove similar results for the Iwahori subgroups of $GL_n(\mathcal{O})$ for number rings $\mathcal{O}$.

Gröbner methods for representations of combinatorial categories

Given a category C of a combinatorial nature, we study the following fundamental question: how does the combinatorial behavior of C affect the algebraic behavior of representations of C? We prove two general results. The first gives a combinatorial criterion for representations of C to admit a theory of Gröbner bases. From this, we obtain a criterion for noetherianity of representations. The second gives a combinatorial criterion for a general "rationality" result for Hilbert series of representations of C. This criterion connects to the theory of formal languages, and makes essential use of results on the generating functions of languages, such as the transfer-matrix method and the Chomsky-Schützenberger theorem. Our work is motivated by recent work in the literature on representations of various specific categories. Our general criteria recover many of the results on these categories that had been proved by ad hoc means, and often yield cleaner proofs and stronger statements. For example: we give a new, more robust, proof that FI-modules (originally introduced by Church-Ellenberg-Farb), and a family of natural generalizations, are noetherian; we give an easy proof of a generalization of the Lannes-Schwartz artinian conjecture from the study of generic representation theory of finite fields; we significantly improve the theory of $Δ$-modules, introduced by Snowden in connection to syzygies of Segre embeddings; and we establish fundamental properties of twisted commutative algebras in positive characteristic.

Orthosymplectic Lie superalgebras, Koszul duality, and a complete intersection analogue of the Eagon-Northcott complex

We study the ideal of maximal minors in Littlewood varieties, a class of quadratic complete intersections in spaces of matrices. We give a geometric construction for a large class of modules, including all powers of this ideal, and show that they have a linear free resolution over the complete intersection and that their Koszul dual is an infinite-dimensional irreducible representation of the orthosymplectic Lie superalgebra. We calculate the algebra of cohomology operators acting on this free resolution. We prove analogous results for powers of the ideals of maximal minors in the variety of length 2 complexes when it is a complete intersection, and show that their Koszul dual is an infinite-dimensional irreducible representation of the general linear Lie superalgebra. This generalizes work of Akin, Józefiak, Pragacz, Weyman, and the author on resolutions of determinantal ideals in polynomial rings to the setting of complete intersections and provides a new connection between representations of classical Lie superalgebras and commutative algebra. As a curious application, we prove that the cohomology of a class of reducible homogeneous bundles on symplectic and orthogonal Grassmannians and 2-step flag varieties can be calculated by an analogue of the Borel-Weil-Bott theorem.

GL-equivariant modules over polynomial rings in infinitely many variables

Consider the polynomial ring in countably infinitely many variables over a field of characteristic zero, together with its natural action of the infinite general linear group G. We study the algebraic and homological properties of finitely generated modules over this ring that are equipped with a compatible G-action. We define and prove finiteness properties for analogues of Hilbert series, systems of parameters, depth, local cohomology, Koszul duality, and regularity. We also show that this category is built out of a simpler, more combinatorial, quiver category which we describe explicitly. Our work is motivated by recent papers in the literature which study finiteness properties of infinite polynomial rings equipped with group actions. (For example, the paper by Church, Ellenberg and Farb on the category of FI-modules, which is equivalent to our category.) Along the way, we see several connections with the character polynomials from the representation theory of the symmetric groups. Several examples are given to illustrate that the invariants we introduce are explicit and computable.

Homology of analogues of Heisenberg Lie algebras

We calculate the homology of three families of 2-step nilpotent Lie (super)algebras associated with the symplectic, orthogonal, and general linear groups. The symplectic case was considered by Getzler and the main motivation for this work was to complete the calculations started by him. In all three cases, these algebras can be realized as the nilpotent radical of a parabolic subalgebra of a simple Lie algebra, and our first approach relies on a theorem of Kostant, but is otherwise elementary and involves combinatorics of Weyl groups and partitions which may be of independent interest. Our second approach is an application of (un)stable representation theory of the classical groups in the sense of recent joint work of the author with Snowden, which is shorter and more conceptual.

Noetherianity of some degree two twisted commutative algebras

In recent years, researchers have discovered various large algebraic structures that have surprising finiteness properties, such as FI-modules and Delta-modules. In this paper, we add another example to the growing list: we show that certain degree two twisted commutative algebras are noetherian. This example appears to have some fundamental differences from previous examples, and is therefore especially interesting. Reflective of this, our proof introduces new methods for establishing noetherianity that are likely to be applicable in other situations. The algebras considered in this paper are closely related to the stable representation theory of classical groups, which is one source of motivation for their study.

On Cohen-Macaulayness of S_n-invariant subspace arrangements

Given a partition $λ$ of n, consider the subspace $E_λ$ of $C^n$ where the first $λ_1$ coordinates are equal, the next $λ_2$ coordinates are equal, etc. In this paper, we study subspace arrangements $X_λ$ consisting of the union of translates of $E_λ$ by the symmetric group. In particular, we focus on determining when $X_λ$ is Cohen-Macaulay. This is inspired by previous work of the third author coming from the study of rational Cherednik algebras and which answers the question positively when all parts of $λ$ are equal. We show that $X_λ$ is not Cohen-Macaulay when $λ$ has at least 4 distinct parts, and handle a large number of cases when $λ$ has 2 or 3 distinct parts. Along the way, we also settle a conjecture of Sergeev and Veselov about the Cohen-Macaulayness of algebras generated by deformed Newton sums. Our techniques combine classical techniques from commutative algebra and invariant theory, in many cases we can reduce an infinite family to a finite check which can sometimes be handled by computer algebra.

Positivity theorems for solid-angle polynomials

For a lattice polytope P, define A_P(t) as the sum of the solid angles of all the integer points in the dilate tP. Ehrhart and Macdonald proved that A_P(t) is a polynomial in the positive integer variable t. We study the numerator polynomial of the solid-angle series sum_{t >= 0} A_P(t) z^t. In particular, we examine nonnegativity of its coefficients, monotonicity and unimodality questions, and study extremal behavior of the sum of solid angles at vertices of simplices. Some of our results extend to more general valuations.

Proof of Stembridge's conjecture on stability of Kronecker coefficients

We prove a conjecture of Stembridge concerning stability of Kronecker coefficients that vastly generalizes Murnaghan's theorem. The main idea is to identify the sequences of Kronecker coefficients in question with Hilbert functions of modules over finitely generated algebras. The proof only uses Schur-Weyl duality and the Borel-Weil theorem and does not rely on any existing work on Kronecker coefficients.

Stability patterns in representation theory

We develop a comprehensive theory of the stable representation categories of several sequences of groups, including the classical and symmetric groups, and their relation to the unstable categories. An important component of this theory is an array of equivalences between the stable representation category and various other categories, each of which has its own flavor (representation theoretic, combinatorial, commutative algebraic, or categorical) and offers a distinct perspective on the stable category. We use this theory to produce a host of specific results, e.g., the construction of injective resolutions of simple objects, duality between the orthogonal and symplectic theories, a canonical derived auto-equivalence of the general linear theory, etc.

Alternating trilinear forms on a 9-dimensional space and degenerations of (3,3)-polarized Abelian surfaces

We give a detailed analysis of the semisimple elements, in the sense of Vinberg, of the third exterior power of a 9-dimensional vector space over an algebraically closed field of characteristic different from 2 and 3. To a general such element, one can naturally associate an Abelian surface X, which is embedded in 8-dimensional projective space. We study the combinatorial structure of this embedding and explicitly recover the genus 2 curve whose Jacobian variety is X. We also classify the types of degenerations of X that can occur. Taking the union over all Abelian surfaces in Heisenberg normal form, we get a 5-dimensional variety which is a birational model for a genus 2 analogue of Shioda's modular surfaces. We find determinantal set-theoretic equations for this variety and present some additional equations which conjecturally generate the radical ideal.

Jack polynomials as fractional quantum Hall states and the Betti numbers of the (k+1)-equals ideal

We show that for Jack parameter α= -(k+1)/(r-1), certain Jack polynomials studied by Feigin-Jimbo-Miwa-Mukhin vanish to order r when k+1 of the coordinates coincide. This result was conjectured by Bernevig and Haldane, who proposed that these Jack polynomials are model wavefunctions for fractional quantum Hall states. Special cases of these Jack polynomials include the wavefunctions of Laughlin and Read-Rezayi. In fact, along these lines we prove several vanishing theorems known as clustering properties for Jack polynomials in the mathematical physics literature, special cases of which had previously been conjectured by Bernevig and Haldane. Motivated by the method of proof, which in case r = 2 identifies the span of the relevant Jack polynomials with the S_n-invariant part of a unitary representation of the rational Cherednik algebra, we conjecture that unitary representations of the type A Cherednik algebra have graded minimal free resolutions of Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand type; we prove this for the ideal of the (k+1)-equals arrangement in the case when the number of coordinates n is at most 2k+1. In general, our conjecture predicts the graded S_n-equivariant Betti numbers of the ideal of the (k+1)-equals arrangement with no restriction on the number of ambient dimensions.

Jacobi-Trudi determinants and characters of minimal affinizations

In their study of characters of minimal affinizations of representations of orthogonal and symplectic Lie algebras, Chari and Greenstein conjectured that certain Jacobi-Trudi determinants satisfy an alternating sum formula. In this note, we prove their conjecture and slightly more. The proof relies on some symmetries of the ring of symmetric functions discovered by Koike and Terada. Using results of Hernandez, Mukhin-Young, and Naoi, this implies that the characters of minimal affinizations in types B, C, and D are given by a Jacobi-Trudi determinant.

Littlewood complexes and analogues of determinantal varieties

One interesting combinatorial feature of classical determinantal varieties is that the character of their coordinate rings give a natural truncation of the Cauchy identity in the theory of symmetric functions. Natural generalizations of these varieties exist and have been studied for the other classical groups. In this paper we develop the relevant properties from scratch. By studying the isotypic decomposition of their minimal free resolutions one can recover classical identities due to Littlewood for expressing an irreducible character of a classical group in terms of Schur functions. We propose generalizations for the exceptional groups. In type G_2, we completely analyze the variety and its minimal free resolution and get an analogue of Littlewood's identities. We have partial results for the other cases. In particular, these varieties are always normal with rational singularities.

Combinatorial realizations of crystals via torus actions on quiver varieties

Consider Kashiwara's crystal associated to a highest weight representation of a symmetric Kac-Moody algebra. There is a geometric realization of this object using Nakajima's quiver varieties, but in many particular cases it can also be realized by elementary combinatorial methods. Here we propose a framework for extracting combinatorial realizations from the geometric picture: We construct certain torus actions on the quiver varieties and use Morse theory to index the irreducible components by connected components of the subvariety of torus fixed points. We then discuss the case of affine sl(n). There the fixed point components are just points, and are naturally indexed by multi-partitions. There is some choice in our construction, leading to a family of combinatorial models for each highest weight crystal. Applying this construction to the crystal of the fundamental representation recovers a family of combinatorial realizations recently constructed by Fayers. This gives a more conceptual proof of Fayers' result as well as a generalization to higher level. We also discuss a relationship with Nakajima's monomial crystal.

Homology of Littlewood complexes

Let V be a symplectic vector space of dimension 2n. Given a partition λwith at most n parts, there is an associated irreducible representation S_{[λ]}(V) of Sp(V). This representation admits a resolution by a natural complex L^λ, which we call the Littlewood complex, whose terms are restrictions of representations of GL(V). When λhas more than n parts, the representation S_{[λ]}(V) is not defined, but the Littlewood complex L^λstill makes sense. The purpose of this paper is to compute its homology. We find that either L^λis acyclic or that it has a unique non-zero homology group, which forms an irreducible representation of Sp(V). The non-zero homology group, if it exists, can be computed by a rule reminiscent of that occurring in the Borel-Weil-Bott theorem. This result can be interpreted as the computation of the "derived specialization" of irreducible representations of Sp(\infty), and as such categorifies earlier results of Koike-Terada on universal character rings. We prove analogous results for orthogonal and general linear groups. Along the way, we will see two topics from commutative algebra: the minimal free resolutions of determinantal ideals and Koszul homology.

Moduli of Abelian varieties, Vinberg theta-groups, and free resolutions

We present a systematic approach to studying the geometric aspects of Vinberg theta-representations. The main idea is to use the Borel-Weil construction for representations of reductive groups as sections of homogeneous bundles on homogeneous spaces, and then to study degeneracy loci of these vector bundles. Our main technical tool is to use free resolutions as an "enhanced" version of degeneracy loci formulas. We illustrate our approach on several examples and show how they are connected to moduli spaces of Abelian varieties. To make the article accessible to both algebraists and geometers, we also include background material on free resolutions and representation theory.

Representations of rational Cherednik algebras of G(m,r,n) in positive characteristic

We study lowest-weight irreducible representations of rational Cherednik algebras attached to the complex reflection groups G(m,r,n) in characteristic p. Our approach is mostly from the perspective of commutative algebra. By studying the kernel of the contravariant bilinear form on Verma modules, we obtain formulas for Hilbert series of irreducible representations in a number of cases, and present conjectures in other cases. We observe that the form of the Hilbert series of the irreducible representations and the generators of the kernel tend to be determined by the value of n modulo p, and are related to special classes of subspace arrangements. Perhaps the most novel (conjectural) discovery from the commutative algebra perspective is that the generators of the kernel can be given the structure of a "matrix regular sequence" in some instances, which we prove in some small cases.

Tensor complexes: Multilinear free resolutions constructed from higher tensors

The most fundamental complexes of free modules over a commutative ring are the Koszul complex, which is constructed from a vector (i.e., a 1-tensor), and the Eagon-Northcott and the Buchsbaum-Rim complexes, which are constructed from a matrix (i.e., a 2-tensor). The subject of this paper is a multilinear analogue of these complexes, which we construct from an arbitrary higher tensor. Our construction provides detailed new examples of minimal free resolutions, as well as a unifying view on a wide variety of complexes including: the Eagon-Northcott, Buchsbaum-Rim and similar complexes, the Eisenbud-Schreyer pure resolutions, and the complexes used by Gelfand-Kapranov-Zelevinsky and Weyman to compute hyperdeterminants. In addition, we provide applications to the study of pure resolutions and Boij-Soederberg theory, including the construction of infinitely many new families of pure resolutions and the first explicit description of the differentials of the Eisenbud-Schreyer pure resolutions.

The Universal Kummer Threefold

The universal Kummer threefold is a 9-dimensional variety that represents the total space of the 6-dimensional family of Kummer threefolds in 7-dimensional projective space. We compute defining polynomials for three versions of this family, over the Satake hypersurface, over the Göpel variety, and over the reflection representation of type E7. We develop classical themes such as theta functions and Coble's quartic hypersurface using current tools from combinatorics, geometry, and commutative algebra. Symbolic and numerical computations for genus 3 moduli spaces appear alongside toric and tropical methods.

Tropicalization of classical moduli spaces

The image of the complement of a hyperplane arrangement under a monomial map can be tropicalized combinatorially using matroid theory. We apply this to classical moduli spaces that are associated with complex reflection arrangements. Starting from modular curves, we visit the Segre cubic, the Igusa quartic, and moduli of marked del Pezzo surfaces of degrees 2 and 3. Our primary example is the Burkhardt quartic, whose tropicalization is a 3-dimensional fan in 39-dimensional space. This effectuates a synthesis of concrete and abstract approaches to tropical moduli of genus 2 curves.

Derived supersymmetries of determinantal varieties

We show that the linear strands of the Tor of determinantal varieties in spaces of symmetric and skew-symmetric matrices are irreducible representations for the periplectic (strange) Lie superalgebra. The structure of these linear strands is explicitly known, so this gives an explicit realization of some representations of the periplectic Lie superalgebra. This complements results of Pragacz and Weyman, who showed an analogous statement for the generic determinantal varieties and the general linear Lie superalgebra. We also give a simpler proof of their result. Via Koszul duality, this is an odd analogue of the fact that the coordinate rings of these determinantal varieties are irreducible representations for a certain classical Lie algebra.

Introduction to twisted commutative algebras

This article is an expository account of the theory of twisted commutative algebras, which simply put, can be thought of as a theory for handling commutative algebras with large groups of linear symmetries. Examples include the coordinate rings of determinantal varieties, Segre-Veronese embeddings, and Grassmannians. The article is meant to serve as a gentle introduction to the papers of the two authors on the subject, and also to point out some literature in which these algebras appear. The first part reviews the representation theory of the symmetric groups and general linear groups. The second part introduces a related category and develops its basic properties. The third part develops some basic properties of twisted commutative algebras from the perspective of classical commutative algebra and summarizes some of the results of the authors. We have tried to keep the prerequisites to this article at a minimum. The article is aimed at graduate students interested in commutative algebra, algebraic combinatorics, or representation theory, and the interactions between these subjects.

Matrices with restricted entries and q-analogues of permutations

We study the functions that count matrices of given rank over a finite field with specified positions equal to zero. We show that these matrices are $q$-analogues of permutations with certain restricted values. We obtain a simple closed formula for the number of invertible matrices with zero diagonal, a $q$-analogue of derangements, and a curious relationship between invertible skew-symmetric matrices and invertible symmetric matrices with zero diagonal. In addition, we provide recursions to enumerate matrices and symmetric matrices with zero diagonal by rank, and we frame some of our results in the context of Lie theory. Finally, we provide a brief exposition of polynomiality results for enumeration questions related to those mentioned, and give several open questions.

Pieri resolutions for classical groups

We generalize the constructions of Eisenbud, Fløystad, and Weyman for equivariant minimal free resolutions over the general linear group, and we construct equivariant resolutions over the orthogonal and symplectic groups. We also conjecture and provide some partial results for the existence of an equivariant analogue of Boij-Söderberg decompositions for Betti tables, which were proven to exist in the non-equivariant setting by Eisenbud and Schreyer. Many examples are given.

Equations and syzygies of some Kalman varieties

Given a subspace L of a vector space V, the Kalman variety consists of all matrices of V that have a nonzero eigenvector in L. Ottaviani and Sturmfels described minimal equations in the case that dim L = 2 and conjectured minimal equations for dim L = 3. We prove their conjecture and describe the minimal free resolution in the case that dim L = 2, as well as some related results. The main tool is an exact sequence which involves the coordinate rings of these Kalman varieties and the normalizations of some related varieties. We conjecture that this exact sequence exists for all values of dim L.

Poset structures in Boij-Söderberg theory

Boij-Söderberg theory is the study of two cones: the cone of cohomology tables of coherent sheaves over projective space and the cone of standard graded minimal free resolutions over a polynomial ring. Each cone has a simplicial fan structure induced by a partial order on its extremal rays. We provide a new interpretation of these partial orders in terms of the existence of nonzero homomorphisms, for both the general and the equivariant constructions. These results provide new insights into the families of sheaves and modules at the heart of Boij-Söderberg theory: supernatural sheaves and Cohen-Macaulay modules with pure resolutions. In addition, our results strongly suggest the naturality of these partial orders, and they provide tools for extending Boij-Söderberg theory to other graded rings and projective varieties.

Schubert complexes and degeneracy loci

Given a generic map between flagged vector bundles on a Cohen-Macaulay variety, we construct maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules with linear resolutions supported on the Schubert-type degeneracy loci. The linear resolution is provided by the Schubert complex, which is the main tool introduced and studied in this paper. These complexes extend the Schubert functors of Kraśkiewicz and Pragacz, and were motivated by the fact that Schur complexes resolve maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules supported on determinantal varieties. The resulting formula in K-theory provides a "linear approximation" of the structure sheaf of the degeneracy locus, which can be used to recover a formula due to Fulton.

Shapes of free resolutions over a local ring

We classify the possible shapes of minimal free resolutions over a regular local ring. This illustrates the existence of free resolutions whose Betti numbers behave in surprisingly pathological ways. We also give an asymptotic characterization of the possible shapes of minimal free resolutions over hypersurface rings. Our key new technique uses asymptotic arguments to study formal Q-Betti sequences.

Symmetric quivers, invariant theory, and saturation theorems for the classical groups

Let G denote either a special orthogonal group or a symplectic group defined over the complex numbers. We prove the following saturation result for G: given dominant weights λ^1, ..., λ^r such that the tensor product V_{Nλ^1} \otimes ... \otimes V_{Nλ^r} contains nonzero G-invariants for some N \ge 1, we show that the tensor product V_{2λ^1} \otimes ... \otimes V_{2λ^r} also contains nonzero G-invariants. This extends results of Kapovich-Millson and Belkale-Kumar and complements similar results for the general linear group due to Knutson-Tao and Derksen-Weyman. Our techniques involve the invariant theory of quivers equipped with an involution and the generic representation theory of certain quivers with relations.

A finite calculus approach to Ehrhart polynomials

A rational polytope is the convex hull of a finite set of points in $\R^d$ with rational coordinates. Given a rational polytope $P \subseteq \R^d$, Ehrhart proved that, for $t\in\Z_{\ge 0}$, the function $#(tP \cap \Z^d)$ agrees with a quasi-polynomial $L_P(t)$, called the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial. The Ehrhart quasi-polynomial can be regarded as a discrete version of the volume of a polytope. We use that analogy to derive a new proof of Ehrhart's theorem. This proof also allows us to quickly prove two other facts about Ehrhart quasi-polynomials: McMullen's theorem about the periodicity of the individual coefficients of the quasi-polynomial and the Ehrhart-Macdonald theorem on reciprocity.

Generalized Ehrhart polynomials

Let $P$ be a polytope with rational vertices. A classical theorem of Ehrhart states that the number of lattice points in the dilations $P(n) = nP$ is a quasi-polynomial in $n$. We generalize this theorem by allowing the vertices of P(n) to be arbitrary rational functions in $n$. In this case we prove that the number of lattice points in P(n) is a quasi-polynomial for $n$ sufficiently large. Our work was motivated by a conjecture of Ehrhart on the number of solutions to parametrized linear Diophantine equations whose coefficients are polynomials in $n$, and we explain how these two problems are related.
